This Valentine’s Day, Kiss the Winter Blues Goodbye! I think most of you will agree with me that February is the hardest month of the year. The sun disappears, and the pale complexion of your friends reminds you that you’d better take your vitamins—else you might just have a cold to accompany that pasty look that you, too, are sporting. Let’s not let the winter blues affect our lives this February! Here are some things I’ve found to help me survive this month’s deep darkness—give them a shot yourself!

PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY

1. Join a gym if you haven’t yet. I know that watching the news or listening to your favorite workout playlist as you run in place may not invigorate your soul the way jogging around the lake or alongside the cornfields does. But you accomplish the same goal: a heart rate over 140 beats a minute. February is national heart month—so do it for your heart! 2. Wear bright colors! I am quite convinced that there is a link between feeling optimistic and sporting bright colors—and so is our fashion expert, Karina. Check out her suggestions in this month’s Fashion & Style section. 3. Hangout with a friend! Take it from me—it takes a village to keep a person sane and happy. 4. Take up a project. There is no time like winter to plan or start a home project. Our moods can often be lifted by pursuing a new challenge— an activity that is formidable enough to keep our attention. Check out our story on David Decker and The Affordable Companies on page 38. This cold, dark month could be the perfect time to re-do a tired old kitchen or bathroom. It’s February. But don’t be alarmed. It’s only 28 days—and spring is just a month away! All the best,

Skin and Body Improvement Using Your Own Fat and Platelets

As we age, lose weight, or as a result of genetics, our faces and bodies can change in unexpected ways.

O

ur eyes and cheeks can appear sunken in. We may develop vertical lines around our mouth, commonly mistaken for “smokers lines.” Our hands start looking boney and our buttocks flatten. All of these changes are a result of lost fat and lost tissue. Your own fat and your own platelet rich plasma (PRP) can help to counteract these changes. Fat cells and PRP are naturally rich in stem cells and growth factors so they can regenerate and restore lost volume anywhere on the face and body. Autologous Fat Transfer, or Fat Injections Fat is an excellent option for improving facial and body contouring. The process involves reshaping less desirable body areas by removing fat from where it is excessive, and moving or injecting it into areas that are deficient. The most common procedures I perform are Brazilian buttocks lifts and face or hand rejuvenation. Autologous fat transfer is a safe, natural and non-allergenic procedure because it’s your own cells, and your body accepts them. I perform the procedure using an ultrasoundassisted method to remove fat. That fat can then be re-injected anywhere you are experiencing lost volume or a need for circulation improvement. Unlike synthetic fillers, fat injections are permanent. Unlike implants, fat is your own body. The treatments are safe; they look and feel natural. The transplanted fat cells develop their own blood supply and will remain in their new location.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Research demonstrates that our own platelet rich plasma (PRP) has the power to heal and regenerate tissue in all areas of our body. PRP treatment uses your own platelets, rich in your own growth factors, to generate new collagen and blood supply. The treatment helps to repair and regenerate damaged skin and reverse the signs of aging. PRP can be combined with almost every treatment or procedure to enhance results. Most of my patients combine PRP injections with other procedures (surgical, injectable, laser and facials). Some patients choose PRP as a stand-alone treatment to improve the overall quality, tightness and texture of their skin. Autologous fat transfer and PRP therapy are treatments Dr. Chernoff uses to create natural and lasting results. They are among many therapies used under his trademarked procedure: YOUR NATURAL BEST®, which are unique and individualized treatment combinations exclusively developed by Dr. Chernoff to enhance his patients’ natural features. Chernoff Cosmetic Surgeons is one of the most comprehensive cosmetic surgery and laser centers in the United States. Dr. Chernoff is involved in numerous research programs that will expand the treatments available to our patients for face and body rejuvenation. Say Goodbye to the Bedroom Blues New hope—for men and women—in the treatment of sexual dysfunction.

D

o you suffer from the “bedroom blues?” Do you long for the orgasms you once had? Well now there is help for both men and women. I want to introduce you to these new procedures: the O-Shot® for women and the P-Shot® for men. O-Shot Also known as the Orgasm Shot®, the O-Shot procedure was developed to help treat women who suffer from some or all of the following problems. • Pain during intercourse, either from having intercourse itself or from vaginal dryness (dyspareunia) • Difficulty having an orgasm even though aroused (female orgasmic disorder) • The inability to stay aroused—even when the desire is there (female sexual arousal disorder) • Low desire or no desire to have intercourse (hypoactive sexual desire disorder) • Incontinence—that is, leaking urine during activities such as laughing, running, coughing and intercourse According to Obstetrics & Gynecology (April 2011), 1in 5 women suffer from one or more of these symptoms. There are 24 FDA-approved medications for sexual dysfunction and not one is for women. Isn’t it time women have their turn? The benefits of healthy intercourse include more energy, more creativity and less depression, which can increase confidence and improve overall health. The O-Shot is an in-office procedure done using your own blood to rejuvenate the vaginal area. The procedure takes less than an hour, with no downtime and no side effects. Your blood is drawn the same way you would have it drawn for any routine blood test. After the blood is collected, it is placed into a special machine that extracts the stem cells and growth factors out of the blood. The stem cell and growth factors that are extracted are known as platelet rich plasma (PRP). The PRP is then used to rejuvenate the vaginal area. Although every woman’s experience may be different, here are some of the results our patients have experienced:

14

ACTIVE

• Greater arousal from clitoral stimulation • Younger, smoother skin of the vulva (lips of the vagina) • A tighter introitus (vaginal opening) • Stronger orgasm and more frequent orgasm • Increased sexual desire • Increased ability to have a vaginal orgasm • Decreased pain for those with dyspareunia (painful intercourse) • Increased natural lubrication • Decreased urinary incontinence Finally, there is an answer for women who suffer in the bedroom. Women no longer have to settle with being told that counseling and hormone therapy are their only hope. P-Shot Now it’s time to discuss the P-Shot, also known as the Priapus Shot®. The P-Shot was developed to help men who suffer from any of the following. • Erectile dysfunction • Wanting more growth (length and girth) • Loss of sensation • Inability to maintain erection • Inability to have orgasm due to loss of sensation Like the O-Shot, the P-Shot is an in-office procedure that generates platelet rich plasma (PRP) using your own blood. The

LI FE magazine | FEBRUARY 2 0 1 5

PRP is then used to rejuvenate the penis. Although every man’s experience may be different, here are some of the results our patients have experienced: • Increased circulation within the penis for a healthier orgasm • Increased sensation, which can increase pleasure and orgasm • Increase in size, both in length and in girth • A harder erection • Ability to maintain erection after orgasm and allow for multiple orgasm • Eliminating the need of other treatments such as Viagra or Cialis, or improving the effects of these treatments There are a variety of treatment options for men who suffer from some form of sexual dysfunction; however, there are not any that have no side effects. The P-Shot offers a more natural way to treat sexual dysfunction and has no side effects to be worried about. If you are interested in either of these procedures, please visit www. longevityinstitute.net for more information, or call 317 574-1677. If you have questions, you can also send an email to info@ longevityinstitute.net. It’s time to take back your sexual health.

Spring 2015 Accessory Report Sandals, earrings and handbags, oh my! This spring, it’s all coming back with a 70s retro twist.

F

ebruary is one of those months I usually feel blah. There’s nothing absolutely exciting happening in town, so why not look forward to the spring season and review some of the upcoming accessory trends?! Spring 2015 is coming packed with reminiscent shapes and styles from the 70s, but don’t get discouraged if this is not your favorite decade—there’s much more to it! !

exhausted themselves of the gladiator-style sandals, think again—they are causing a major stir with a complete new vibe. Most designers came out with their own version of it, but they all resemble one another when it comes to length (all close to the knees). Some styles are an art work of their own, and whether you like it or not they are a true piece of fashion that is slowly becoming a classic.

The Platform Sandal

The Handbag Department

The Statement Earrings

The Pointy Flats

Yes, you read it right. The platform sandal is back big time, with or without socks, however you prefer. (Major cringe here!) This trend is definitely my least favorite, but there’s a few styles out there that I can see myself pulling off. If you’re not a fan either, stick with the classics that never go out of style such as pointy pumps and simple stripy sandals.

From minimal to baroque styles, you’ll be able to find something interesting that fits your taste. The statement necklace is so last season. Now it’s time to let your ears shine, and there’s nothing better than a long dangling piece to show them off.

The Gladiator Boots

If you thought the fashion industry had

they’re also chic and sophisticated enough to go out for dinner and such. And let’s be honest. Anyone looks hot in heels, ladies— but to look hot in flats takes personality! These are the major trends for spring, and as time goes by, we can break them down and give you everyday options on how to wear each and everyone of them! Cheers,

Ah, the handbags. While some styles, such as the practical bucket bag and crossbody, will stay put for the new season, others are coming to steal the spotlight. Roundshaped bags, minis and totes, with flashy and metallic coats of paint and leather textures are so 2015. Innovative wristlets and clutches are also coming around to revamp your handbag wardrobe!

There was a time I didn’t care much for flats, but with maturity, evolving taste, and kids, I started to see beauty in them! Big thanks also go to designers who understand the need for style along with practicality and comfort. I absolutely adore pointy flats, studded ones, and the ones with ankle ties. Not only is there the comfort factor so you can run errands wearing them, but

What’s Up with Fevers? How to treat them and when to call the doctor. much a disease in itself. In most cases, a fever indicates a minor illness. Fever is usually uncomfortable, and most people feel better when it’s treated. Depending on your age, physical condition and the underlying cause of your fever, you may not require medical treatment. Adults and children can usually treat a fever with over-the-counter medicines such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin). Babies and very young children can be a different story. It’s important to contact a doctor if children have a fever accompanied by fussiness, poor appetite, cough, ear pain or diarrhea. For infants younger than 4 months old with a rectal temperature of 100.4°F or above, you should call the doctor immediately or go to an emergency room. This spike in fever could be a sign of a potentially life-threatening infection. Also call your doctor or go to the emergency room if any child has a fever above 104°F. High fever can cause seizures in young children. Fever in adults is different, as patients can identify other symptoms and provide a past medical history. Patients with immune system conditions or some other diseases do not function as well as others, and their bodies may not be able to fight off infection adequately. This might include the following: • people receiving chemotherapy for cancer • people who take drugs to treat chronic inflammation such as rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus • people with HIV/AIDS • older people

O

n average, most people function with a body temperature of 98.6°F (37°C)—as determined by placing a thermometer beneath the tongue. Body temperatures fluctuate, though, and may be as low as 97.4°F (36.3°C), usually in the morning, or as high as 99.6°F (37.6°C), usually in late afternoon. Temperature can

22

be affected by exercise, the number of layers of clothing worn, hot baths or exposure to hot weather. A fever crops up when the body is responding to an infection. This response is intended to help the body fight that infection off. It is really a symptom—not so

LI FE magazine | FEBRUARY 2 0 1 5

These patients need to be seen urgently if a fever develops. Otherwise, a fever plus other symptoms may provide enough information for you to ask your doctor if you need to be seen or can stay home and self-treat. With a fever, always make sure that you are taking enough foods and fluids and urinating in normal amounts. In most cases, the illness that caused the fever will clear up in a few days.

Orangetheory Fitness

O

Coming to Carmel

rangetheory Fitness, the energizing and fast-growing fitness franchise, is coming to Carmel, Indiana. The pilot studio will be located at 2438 E. 146th Street in Cool Creek Commons across from the Carmel water tower. The estimated grand opening is currently scheduled for late March. Although this will be the first Orangetheory Fitness studio in the state, by no means will it be the last! Orangetheory Fitness studios offer heart-rate based, group interval training, using a variety of equipment including treadmills, water rowing machines, TRX suspension straps and free weights. The 60-minute classes are led by certified trainers and boast workouts that can burn from 500 to 1000 calories per session. Everyone in the class wears a heart rate monitor, and the percentage of a member’s maximum heart rate is projected on large monitors during the session. It’s a total body workout with cardiovascular and strength training for all fitness levels. Area developers and owners Shaun and Carolyn McDonald relocated to the Indianapolis area from sunny Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to develop the Indiana market for Orangetheory Fitness. As is the case with many Orangetheory Fitness franchisees, Shaun and Carolyn started as members. “My husband and I were looking for a fun, efficient workout that we could do together,” says Carolyn. Their passion for the product as consumers led to inquiries into business opportunities. “We were not only sold on the business savvy of the founding team and their corporate staff—we were also intrigued by the ability to do something that would positively impact the community in which we served,” states Shaun. After initially considering a South Florida franchise, the McDonalds decided to return to Indiana for the opportunity to develop a larger region and be closer to family. “The years we spent in Indianapolis were some of our best, so it was an easy decision to come back,” explains Carolyn. Shaun and Carolyn bring an extensive business background to this new venture. Both worked in the local television industry in sales and executive level management. “This is a chance for us to use what we have learned in business over the last 20+ years to build something for which we have a tremendous passion!” says Shaun. Orangetheory Fitness has more than 170 studios in the United States and Canada and is developing the brand in Australia, Columbia and Great Britain. The 60-minute, five zone heart-rate monitored interval training concept has helped tens of thousands of members lose weight, get toned and meet their overall fitness goals. “If your main objective is to get results, Orangetheory Fitness is for you,” Carolyn says. “It’s more about results than simply access to a gym.” Orangetheory Fitness is on track to open 500 studios by 2017. For more information on Orangetheory Fitness Carmel and membership packages call 317 688-1348. Additional information on Orangetheory Fitness is available at www.orangetheoryfitness.com.

Take a Pledge for Better Heart Health Give your heart the attention it deserves! blood pressure and limit the medication needed,” says Dr. Shaikh. Cut back on salt. Try flavoring foods with lemon juice, vinegar, herbs and salt-free seasoning mixes. And carefully read the labels of the processed foods you buy. A lot of prepackaged food contains large amounts of salt, sugar and preservatives. Exercise 30 minutes a day for five days a week. Many of us still struggle to fit exercise in our schedules. But studies show that, even in 10-minute sessions, exercise helps lower stress and blood pressure. It also helps to increase metabolism, which can help you maintain your current weight or lose what you need to reach a healthy weight. “After quitting smoking, exercise really is the next best thing you can do for your heart and overall health,” says Dr. Shaikh. “Any amount, any intensity will make a difference.” But before starting any new exercise program or activity, he adds, be sure to talk about it with your family doctor.

T

his February, as our hearts turn to love, give some attention to your own heart and heart health.

“Nearly every man or woman in the United States either has heart disease or has a dear family member, spouse or friend with heart disease,” says Saeed Shaikh, MD, an interventional cardiologist with Franciscan Physician Network Indiana Heart Physicians, “and it is the leading cause of death for both men and women.” Women need to be especially aware of their risks and do what they can to lower them, adds Dr. Shaikh. “Diabetes and smoking increase the risk of heart disease in women more than in men. And women are more likely to die one year after a heart attack than men,” he says. Fortunately, there are many things you can do—starting today—to lower your risk of having a heart attack or stroke, even when heart disease runs in your family. Stop smoking. Smoking raises blood pressure and hardens the arteries, both which can lead to a heart attack. If you’ve

26

ACTIVE

tried to quit before without success, don’t give up. Talk to your doctor about ways to quit. “It’s a message that can’t be repeated enough,” says Dr. Shaikh. “If you smoke, quitting is the best thing you can do to lower your risk of heart disease, not to mention lung disease and lung cancer.” Know thyself. Is your cholesterol high or low? Does someone in your family have heart disease? How is your blood pressure? Is your weight within a desirable range? Discuss these questions with your family doctor at your next physical.

Limit or eliminate red meat from your diet. Study after study reveals that diets high in red meat lead to a higher risk of heart disease. Most cuts of beef contain more fat and cholesterol than white-meat chicken. Fish is naturally low in fat, although some shellfish can be high in cholesterol. Beans and legumes are good alternative sources of protein; consider incorporating them more into your meals. Try some of the new soy products for entrees. This February, share this list with your loved ones and make another vow: to love your heart and embrace heart-healthy living.

Monitor your blood pressure. Normal, heart-healthy blood pressure is 120/80 or lower. As we age, however, our blood pressure tends to rise, especially if we don’t exercise regularly or limit the amount of sodium (salt) in our diets. Know your blood pressure, and talk to your physician about ways to lower it, if necessary. “There are several medications we can prescribe for hypertension, but there are lifestyle changes, including exercise and reducing sodium intake, that can lower

What I Wish I Knew About Cardio... ...before the dreaded plateau

A A

bout nine years ago, prior to having my first child, I trained for and raced in my second marathon. Running had been my first and only choice of cardio since my freshman year in college, and I had a deep passion for it. It helped reduce stress; it helped me to lose my “freshman 15” and keep it off; it was inexpensive and could be done year round; and most of all it made me happy. However, somewhere along the way my passion dwindled, some of the weight came back, and I just didn’t have the same desire to keep running day after day. So I took a few years off while raising our kids. Even upon returning to training though, I couldn’t wrap my head around running. I was truly burned out. Looking for something different, I joined a swim team (something I did throughout high school), and then I decided to train for and compete in a triathlon. The

30

cross training made exercising fun again! I was learning something new and was able to find my passion for running again, and I eventually found myself returning to marathon training. My body clearly felt up to the challenge and welcomed the mix-up, as I was able to shed all my baby weight and found myself in the best condition I had been in since college. What I had come to realize is that the best cardio for me is the cardio that I would actually do. All of us have different backgrounds, interests, body types, health status and goals. What works for me may not work for you, and vice versa. Find something fun and enjoyable yet challenging—cardio that you want to revisit daily. Then work to continue to test yourself, either by cross training with other forms of exercise that you prefer or by increasing the number of days

performing the cardio. You also could add intervals, hills or strength and cardio supersets. Remember that it’s not only important to find your best cardio but to always give it your best effort. I leave you with Fred Devito’s quote: “If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you.”

Heart Healthy Tips Think about it: Where would you be without your heart?

F

ebruary is just a lovely month, isn’t it? By “lovely,” I mean that literally—love is in the air! We plan fancy dinners with our treasured ones; we pay a ridiculous price for roses; and we splurge on chocolate delights and candy hearts. When it comes to your own heart, though, you may likely neglect its importance—unless, of course, you have a family history of poor heart health or have personally dealt with heart issues. Let me remind us why it is so critical that, no matter how healthy our hearts are, we make consciously healthy choices daily for a positive outcome. Your heart is one of the most important organs in the entire human body, and heart disease is one of the leading causes of death. According to Wikipedia, “Cardiovascular disease (CVD) was the most common cause of death globally in 2008, accounting for 30% of cases. Of these deaths more than three quarters were due to coronary artery disease and stroke. Risk factors include: smoking, being overweight, not enough exercise, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and poorly controlled diabetes, among others.” Let’s address each of the “risk factors” (or as I like to call them “obstacles”) and give ourselves the weapons we need to combat them. 1. Smoking. This is a very touchy subject and something that you should seriously talk to your doctor about. Weaning yourself from nicotine is no easy task and should be discussed with a professional.

4. High Cholesterol. Lowering your cholesterol levels requires big changes in the foods you consume. You can find a large gallery of heart-healthy recipes at www.heart.org.

2. Being Overweight. Your belly is one of the most dangerous places to store excess fat. Jorge Cruz, author of The Belly Fat Cure, offers heaps of advice on goal setting and meal planning. He has authored a long list of books, all worth reading.

5. High Blood Pressure. Consider implementing one or more yoga classes a week into your routine. Yoga is a great form of exercise to help you de-stress by teaching you how to breathe in a very controlled yet relaxed manner.

3. Not Enough Exercise. Fitbit is definitely trending at the moment, and it’s no wonder why! This easy-to-use health app tracks your steps, your sleep, and even allows you to log your food. Make sure that you are getting at least 10,000 steps a day. Anything extra is “icing on the cake.”

6. Poorly Controlled Diabetes. Consider holding yourself accountable to tracking your levels on an app like “Diabetes App Lite,” free on iTunes.

Wine for Beginners In learning to taste wine, the pleasure you receive is proportionate to the effort that you make.

T

here really isn’t a single type of wine that every single beginner will love. On the other hand, there are many delicious wines for the budding wine enthusiast to give a try before trying heavier or more serious wines. Many factors affect the pleasure beginners take in wine. Learning to taste wine is no different than learning to really appreciate music or art in that the pleasure you receive is proportionate to the effort you make. Taste At its bare minimum, all wine really is, is fermented grape juice. What gives the wine its body, aroma and flavor characteristics depends on the blend of grapes, the vintner’s technique and how the wine is stored while it’s aging. Beginning wine drinkers want to stick with the simple, less complex wines so as not to overwhelm the taste buds. Simple wines include unoaked single varietal wines, such as Pinot Grigio or Barbera. Wine has many flavors, depending on the type of wine. For example, many reds have flavors such as dark fruits, leather, tobacco, berries and cherries. White wines may have flavors such as toast, spice, citrus fruits, apples and pears, among many others. Viscosity/Body If you’ve ever heard someone refer to the “mouth feel” of a wine, they’re referring to the viscosity, that is, how heavy or light the wine feels in your mouth. Beginning wine lovers tend to enjoy wines that are light on the palate. Lighter-bodied wines include Beaujolais Nouveau and Sauvignon Blanc. Aromatics Whether or not you care about the aromatics of wine depends on how much you want to delve into the wine world. If you are looking to become an expert, you need to learn how to differentiate the subtle aromatic notes in any type of wine. If you’re just looking to understand a little more about what you’re drinking, the basics will do. Aromatics depend on many factors including the grapes, the terroir (where the

36

ACTIVE

wine is grown) and how the wine is aged. Viognier and Grenache are very aromatic wines. Sweetness Many beginning wine drinkers prefer wines with slightly more sweetness than some dry wines afford. This doesn’t mean the wine needs to be sugary sweet—just not so dry that it makes your mouth pucker. Winemakers create wines with a wide range of sweetness that depends on varietal, residual sugar, when the grapes are harvested, alcohol content and types of grapes used. Sweetness ranges from dry reds and whites like Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay to very sweet dessert wines such as Port. For many beginners, off-dry wines such as Moscato d’Asti and Pinot Noir are a great entree into wines. Best White Wine for Beginners It really is a matter of personal preference whether you begin your wine drinking experience with reds or whites, but generally, it’s best to begin with white wines. The reason for this is because white wines are lighter bodied and easier on the palate than reds. Here are a few great starter whites: Pinot Grigio: One of the most user-friendly white wines on the market, Pinot Grigio wines are light bodied and crisp, both in finish and flavor characteristics. Moscato: This slightly fizzy, off-dry wine from Italy is a delight. It has flavors of apricots and almonds, and offers a crispy sweet and juicy sip that tickles the nose as you drink it. Riesling: This wine ranges from dry to very sweet, but is almost universally loved for its crisp citrus and mineral flavors, bright acidity and light body. Try a German Riesling, or enjoy a bottle from Washington State. Sauvignon Blanc: This is a crisp, refreshing and light-bodied white with simple flavors that include kiwi and citrus. It’s also a wonderful summer wine because it is so refreshing.

LI FE magazine | FEBRUARY 2 0 1 5

Best Red Wine for Beginners Just as with white wines, you want to start out with simple reds. Then, as your wine palate develops, move on to the complex, full-bodied reds. Here are a few suggestions for a jumping off point: Pinot Noir: Light- to medium-bodied and super food friendly, it’s so easy to fall in love with a Pinot Noir even if you don’t fancy yourself a red wine enthusiast. Syrah: Syrah and its Australian sibling, Shiraz, are one and the same. Australian Shirazs tend to be a bit on the peppery side, while Syrahs tend to be a bit more fruity. Beaujolais Nouveau: This French wine is meant to be drunk young. It releases in November of every year and usually sells out before Christmas. The wine is fruity and light, without heavy tannins, making it a favorite for new wine drinkers.

You could say that David Decker was born an entrepreneur. As a child, he often accompanied his father to work at the wholesale product supply business he owned. “Those are some of my earliest memories,” David says. “I spent hours watching him work and interact with customers, vendors and his employees. When I started grade school, I set up shop and began selling candy to the students in my classes!” As the years went by, he took on more and more responsibilities for his father’s business. Growing up this way taught David the ins-and-outs of owning and managing a business, and it bred in him an insatiable desire to own a business of his own one day. Balance isn’t a word that David, owner of The Affordable Companies in Carmel, grew up knowing. Whereas many teenagers are content to do some part-time work at a fast food joint, David not only continued to work for his father, but also took a job at a local branch of a national office supply store. During the summers he would often work a combined total of 50 to 60 hours a week, and even during the school year 20 to 25 hours a week was the norm. He went on to study Business Management at Purdue, and he continued his real-world, on-thejob education at the office supply store. There he completed a college management training program the company offered, and was promoted first to Assistant Manager, then to Store Manager—all by the age of 23. “I was at a crossroads at that point,” David says. “I’d worked so hard for the corporation that I’d lost sight of that entrepreneurial passion I’d had for so long.” And so David hit the books, researching possible paths that could lead him toward owning his own business. “Real estate fascinated me in many different areas,” he says. And so, while continuing to work days, David studied real estate on the nights and weekends. “I got my real estate license, and I began to learn about flipping houses— which naturally led to reconstructing homes for resale.” A DREAM AND A TRUCK “When I first started, I didn’t have much

40

ACTIVE

money,” David tells me. “So for $1100, I bought a 1979 blue Chevy rust bucket with no power steering, no windows, no brakes, no exhaust. I was lucky to get it started in the mornings.” People passing by him on the highway pointed and laughed—but little did they know the passion and the entrepreneurial mission behind that rusty facade. Through the reconstruction he did on his flipped houses, David discovered his gift for visualizing, creating and expressing himself through his work. “In every house I flipped, I taught myself construction processes that often take others years and years to learn,” he says. A residential bathroom remodel was David’s first project outside his own properties. “A colleague approached me about it, and I hesitated at first, but I quickly fell in love with doing custom design and build,” he tells me. “That job turned into referral after referral, and we grew quickly.” The Affordable Companies was born, and David’s dream to own his own business had become reality. WHO OWNS WHO? David couldn’t be prouder of the fullservice kitchen, bath and flooring business he has built from the ground up. And while he may own the company, he admits that for the past nine or ten years, it felt more like the business owned him. “I made a lot of sacrifices in my personal life,” he says. “But when you own your own business, you somehow have to find a way to get it done, whether that’s pulling up your boots, or bringing someone in. The right attitude is crucial.” Over the years, David has worked hard to put efficient processes and procedures in place, updating his offices with the latest software, and making sure he has the right staff in place to ensure that the work gets done right. These days, with 17 full-time employees, not counting installers, David can finally start to breathe a little easier—and can finally begin learning more about what balance means for him. “It really comes down to having good people,” he says. For someone like David, who prides himself so much on his grit, drive, determination and overall backbone, learning to live a balanced life is a continuous work in progress. “When you think about all the people that rely on you and the business to feed and provide for their families, it’s very easy to take a selfless stance,” he says. But he knows that maintaining a healthy balance is a choice. “Work will always be there, no matter how much you get done today. Once you realize that and really believe it, it’s much easier to obtain that balance.” THE LIGHTER SIDE OF LIFE When David’s not working—that is, when he gives himself permission to get away— you’re likely to find him in one of three

places: the gym, the kitchen or the golf course. “I work out typically four times a week, doing weight training and cardio like running or boxing,” he says. “It’s so good for the mind. I experience a better mood and increased energy and strength from my workouts.” When it comes to nourishing those workouts, David tries to keep it healthy. “I typically meal prep on Sundays, and I stick to natural foods and organics as much as possible,” David tells me. “I’ll cook bison, turkey, chicken and an occasional steak, and I hard boil a dozen eggs per week.” He rounds out his diet with a variety of fruits and vegetables, and he eats only natural sugars for the most part. He never drinks coffee or soda. Always one for a challenge, David says he recently signed up for a week-long sailing certification course down in Fort Lauderdale. And he’s working towards his pilot license, too! (It seems to me that, soon, David will be able to pursue his dreams on land, air and sea.) Now about that golf game. “Well, that’s a bit of a love/hate relationship!” he laughs. “I played from about age 11 through high school and then pretty much gave it up.” Two years ago David opted to reunite himself with the green. “I’ve been working hard to completely re-tool my swing, which has proven to be a lot of work,” he tells me. “But my instructor often gets humorously frustrated with me because I pick up on things so quickly!” LOOKING AHEAD The future is wide open for David and his thriving business. “In the coming year, we’re going to keep fine tuning the processes and procedures we’ve implemented in the last year, and I see us getting better every day,” he says. “In ten years, I see Affordable as an amazing company to work for with franchises across the nation. We’ve set the foundation—now it’s time to execute.” Part of that execution involves giving back to the community. “I’ve been getting more involved with Habitat for Humanity,” David says. “I mentioned in one of our Monday meetings that I’d volunteered and asked if anyone else would be interested. I was surprised that every one raised their hand!” And so David’s plans include working this year with Habitat to see how the Affordable Companies can best contribute their time and expertise to help dreams come true for others. He sums it all up this way. “I started with just a dream and a truck that was lucky to start in the morning,” David says. “From there, my colleagues and I have built it up and turned this company into something for us all to be proud of.”

When someone asks, “What do you do?” – what do you tell them? I own The Affordable Companies, which is a fullservice kitchen, bath and flooring dealer. In short, we’re an interior design and build company that specializes in cabinetry, flooring and kitchen and bath remodel.

What would you say defines you? My character. My attitude towards all things: grit, drive, determination, fortitude and just overall backbone for getting things done.

What would you say to readers who don’t feel they can successfully juggle family life, work and personal time? The first step is realizing you can do it. Work will always be there no matter how much you get done today. Once you realize that and truly believe it, and once you get an organization system in place, balance is much easier to obtain. I recommend the book Getting Things Done by David Allen.

The Portuguese brought African slaves when they arrived in the 1500s, and the slaves brought traditions that remain to this day. The city is even divided by old and new, with the historic town center of Pelourinho in Upper Salvador, where, in the shadow of old Catholic churches, you can see bare-chested men twist, contort and fling their bodies in capoeira displays traced back to Africa. Take the Elevador Lacerda, a concrete-encased elevator, down to the lower and more modern Salvador where you can sample acarajé, an African-
