Guys, Let me start this by saying thank you for your hard work, day in and day out. While your routine may vary slightly, for the most part it goes something like this: Work various hours Monday through Friday; do projects of some sort Saturday and Sunday; then start all over the next Monday. Now I am not knocking hard work by any stretch since I know first-hand just how important it is, but while that routine of yours sounds extremely productive, it oozes with monotony. Are you with me?

Let me relate this to metabolism. When you eat the same foods day after day, your metabolism will become sluggish and stop performing its job properly. The same thing happens with your mind when you become so accustomed to a routine. I understand that there is usually little you can do to break the monotony on the job, but when the weekend hits, you have a chance to do something different. Now, I can always come up with a new improvement project for my husband to do on the weekends. I also know that he is much more productive and positive when he has time (with no nagging) to do something fun or relaxing, whether it be sleeping in, playing ball with the guys, or getting in some target practice. And I have a feeling that he is not unlike most of you.

hen it comes to water and summer weather, The Waterpark is the place to be for your recreation and water activities. The adventure-based features and aqua aerobic classes will make The Waterpark, located at the Monon Community Center in Central Park, an increasingly popular destination for families. Visitors can come to surf the waves, relax in the lazy river, cool off on the Adventure Slides and participate in group aqua fitness classes. This is one outdoor aquatic experience unmatched in the region! Surf the Wave. The FlowRider® is the first simulated surfing ride in the state of Indiana. The sport is easy and quick to learn. learn some more advanced tricks. Adult and Teen Open Flows ($5 at the door), as well as private lessons are also available. Participants must be 52” tall to participate. Scale the Wall. Developed for poolside wall-climbing recreation, The Wall (aka AquaClimb® 3D Ice) provides a 5-foot by 3-foot, clear acrylic climbing wall where kids and adults alike can safely test their climbing skills while getting fit. Climbers swim up to The Wall, and the climb starts slightly below the pool surface. They climb as far as they can without using ropes or belays, and when they let go, they make a harmless splash, adding to their fun. In addition to a great physical workout, aquatic climbing works out the “thinking muscles” as well, requiring a combination of creative thinking and physical output. Get in Shape. Water aerobics feels like play, but benefits your body as well. It not only burns calories and forces you to engage more muscle fibers, but it has also been proven to
increase range of motion while reducing inflammation. Aqua Cardio, Aqua Zumba, Gentle Aqua, Walking Track and Deep Water are all water aerobics classes being offered at The Waterpark this summer. Whether you are looking for a walk against the current, want to focus on low impact and resistance, or get your heart pumping, these water activities are a great fit for your everyday aquatic routine. Modifications can be made to accommodate all fitness levels. More Treatment Options for Men eyes. Eyelid and eyebrow surgery are efficient and excellent procedures for men, with rapid recovery times.
Step right up to the fountain of youth, men.
Botox helps smooth the deep vertical lines between our eyebrows, the horizontal lines on our forehead, and crow’s feet around our eyes. Dermal fillers are helpful for men who are plagued with acne scaring or scars from sports or injuries. Men who want a slim waist, six pack and muscular chest will often boost their workouts with cosmetic body sculpting. Brown fat deposits in the mid-section, breasts or waist can be resistant to diet and exercise. In these cases, body sculpting or gynecomastia is ideal. New surgical and non-surgical body sculpting techniques offer minimal downtime and maximum safety. Even better—your fat that is removed can be used for other uses like stem cell treatment and facial aging or hair restoration. The best plastic surgeons require their patients to be at a normal BMI before any type of body sculpting procedure both for safety and maximum effectiveness.

t’s no secret that men age differently than women. This difference requires a unique approach to male cosmetic procedures. Men’s biology, facial anatomy, skin, and aging process are unique. Men have thicker skin, larger pores and less subcutaneous fat than women. While men will benefit from similar procedures, often the technique, sequence and regimens are different. Hair replacement and transplantation has always been one of the most soughtafter treatments for men. Now men are asking for hair transplantation to improve the appearance and thickness of their facial hair. Surgical hair transplantation and investigational stem cell hair restoration

are permanent solutions to receding or thinning hair on heads and faces. Advanced techniques allow individual hairs to be regrown using a patient’s own donor hair. Stem cell hair restoration is an investigational process that uses your own stem cells harvested from fat to stimulate new hair growth. Both treatments provide natural and permanent results indistinguishable from natural hair. The effects of aging are inevitable, and often it’s the brow, forehead, and eye area that show the first signs. The skin begins to lose its elasticity. Sun, wind and the pull of gravity all affect the face, resulting in frown lines, wrinkling across the forehead, heaviness of the eyebrows, excess skin on the upper eyelids and puffiness or bags under the
Nose reshaping, or rhinoplasty, can make a significant and natural facial and health improvement for men. In some cases, rhinoplasty combined with sinus surgery can repair damaged caused by an injury, help patients breathe easier, and minimize snoring. Techniques have improved greatly, offering patients safe and effective results with minimal downtime. For men who are prone to skin breakouts, red skin, blood vessels, or unwanted hair, laser treatment is an excellent option. Pain relief—without the need for surgery.
The Aging Spine “But Doctor, I used to be able to walk through the store without pain.” “But Doctor, I used to be able to play 18 holes of golf and now my back pain starts after the third hole. I am just not ready to give up golf!” “Doctor, I have this miserable pain shooting down my arm.”
O
We hear these complaints every day at Midwest Pain and Spine.
ur spines are highly complex structures composed of bones; cartilage (the discs that act as cushions between the bones); and joints, where the bones connect to one another. As we enter early adulthood, the process of aging starts to degenerate the spine slowly and continually throughout our lifetimes. This process of aging can interfere with our
abilities to lead a full, functional and enjoyable life. For some, pain will not be an issue. But for others, the aging process will lead to pain, and it can be immediate in onset or slow and progressive. Any one or a combination of structures in the spine can cause the pain. As our cushions, or discs, start to wear down, they may flatten out or bulge, occasionally pushing into the spinal canal, causing pain by putting pressure on the
spinal nerve. As a result, numbness, tingling and/ or weakness may occur in the legs or neck. Symptoms may include pain shooting down the arms or legs, or perhaps difficulty walking through the store without leaning on a grocery cart, along with a heavy sensation in the legs. Pain with bending backwards and/or rotating is also a common complaint. These pains, as well as sciatica, can be treated without the need for surgery.
If you suffer from these pains, there are treatment options to help you be more pain-free. Let us evaluate you to determine which type of treatment is appropriate for you. For further information and/or evaluation, Midwest Pain and Spine can be contacted at www.midwestpain.net or locally at 317 815-8950.

Low Back Pain in Golfers A
s with any sport, golfing has its risks, and over time, your swing can potentially wreak havoc on your lower back. Most acute cases of low back pain improve more or less on their own over a period of time. However, if your pain persists, it may be wise to see a health care professional.
L
ow back pain is one of the most common reasons for seeking medical attention. The lifetime prevalence of back pain is estimated to be 85% to 90%. One of the most common golf injuries is lower back pain. Approximately 90% of all tour injuries in professional golfers involve the neck or the back. The highly mobile lumbar (lower) spine is an important source of dynamic power during a golf swing, and an injury to this structure may cause missed time on the course. The most common causes of low back pain in golfers include a muscle strain/ligament sprain, degenerative disc disease, facet joint pain and disc herniations. A lumbar strain is a tear in the muscle fibers that run along the spine, and is the most common cause of acute pain in golfers. It is often associated with muscle spasms and back stiffness. Degenerative disc disease is a term used to describe the loss of water content in the cushions (discs) in our back as we age. Tears may occur in the disc as the water content decreases. The golf swing causes large amounts of compressive forces across the disc, which may lead to pain in a compromised disc. Facet joints are
14
ACTIVELI FEGUI DE . COM
/June 2014
the joints of the spine that allow the lower back to rotate and bend. Maximal stress on these joints occur during back extension and rotation. Pain can be due to capsular tears, microtrauma, or arthritis of these joints. Prevention is the key to avoiding lost time on the golf course. Stretching is important before starting any round of golf. Stretches focused on the lower back, hamstrings and torso will help with flexibility, which will improve the demands placed on the muscles and ligaments. Once the stretching is complete, allow yourself some time to warm up on the driving range. Start with some light swings with your short irons, working your way up to the driver. This allows your muscles time to warm up, and allows you to get your swing in tune. Lastly, proper swing mechanics are important to avoid placing abnormal stresses on the structures of the lower back. Thankfully, most acute episodes of low back pain improve over a couple days to weeks. A brief period of rest, heat and/ or ice to the affected area, as well as antiinflammatory medications, may help reduce the inflammation associated with an injury. In golfers with persistent pain, or pain radiating into the legs, evaluation by a health care provider may be warranted.

Swing
TIME! Keith Suttle BY MATTHEW HUME | Photography by Eduardo Pe単a
Keith Suttle has never been able to sit still. (Just ask his elementary school teachers.) As a student at Ball State, he vowed that once he earned his degree, he would spend as little time behind a computer each day as possible. As founder and owner of Correct2Compete, Keith has found a perfect way to keep himself on the go, while at the same time using his gifts and expertise to inspire and improve the lives of his clients.
16
ACTIVELI FEGUI DE . COM

“It’s an explosive sport,” Keith says of golf. “The swing is one explosive, onesecond move.”
17
D
uring his childhood days in the Chicago area, Keith Suttle played every sport in the book, from soccer to basketball to golf. “I grew up just running around,” Keith says. “I did anything I could to keep moving.” This need to be on the go followed him throughout his academic career. “I couldn’t stand sitting still at Ball State,” he says of the four to eight hours a day he would sit at his computer researching and writing his way to a master’s degree in biomechanics. “I knew that I didn’t want to do research, to be stuck behind a desk,” Keith says. And so he started his own business. Keith learned from an early age the discipline that a successful business requires. His father, who he describes as a “workout nut,” took him to the gym every morning at 5:00 in high school. “Sometimes he dragged me out of bed,” Keith remembers, “and other times, I was out in the kitchen making eggs and protein shakes with him.” Even now, he sees his father as a role model. Working out six to seven times a week, his father—a police sergeant with a second-degree black belt—continues to be a formidable man. “I still wouldn’t want to pick a fight with him!” he laughs. Keith also considers his three brothers as being very formative in his drive to succeed. “When you grow up with three brothers, they have a way of holding you accountable,” he says. Keith believes that in life, just as with fitness, it’s the people around you that keep you on track with your goals and support you in your efforts to succeed. After securing his undergraduate degree in exercise science and business from Illinois State University, Keith worked as a college strength coach, and he landed a year-long internship with the Chicago Bulls. It was in grad school that Keith’s focus really started to be on the study of golf. “It was at Ball State that I had my first experience with the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI),”
he explains. TPI is an educational and research facility that studies how the human body works in relation to the golf swing. “I looked at what muscles fired during the swing, to how a certain attack angle affects the shot itself,” Keith says.
>See more+exclusive photos of Keith’s cover shoot at activelifeguide.com
It’s with this background that Keith started Correct2Compete. “Our goal is to improve lives and general well-being through sports, specifically golf,” he says. C2C offers an indoor golf driving range, golf simulators, lessons and club fitting. But C2C’s mission goes much further than that. Keith and his staff work on the functional problems of their clients, from hurting knees to swing flaws in their game. “Our aim is to correct the flaws for our clients to become competitive.” With both a sports performance branch and a golf academy, Keith explains that C2C can help everyone—whether it’s improving speed and agility in an 8-year-old, or improving the golf swing of a 60-year-old.
helps me mentally,” he says. “I’m a lot more focused—more stable and controlled.” Keith also sees a connection between his workouts and his business life. “If I’m driven to succeed in a workout, I can transfer that to work,” Keith says. “If I can’t be disciplined to work out, how can I be disciplined in anything else?”
Training to compete At this point in our conversation, I confessed to Keith that, as a lay person myself, I had never understood golf to be an athletic event. Keith calmly, yet quickly, set me straight. “It’s very active—we do 4-hour rounds, and we’re carrying 35-pound bags around with us,” he says. “It’s an explosive sport—the swing is one explosive, one-second move.” And it’s a move that makes or breaks a game. In his own workouts, Keith prefers very functional and movement-specific exercises such as Olympic lifts, TRX and box jumps. “I train like I’m competing,” he says. “I consider myself to be an athlete, and I consider my golfers to be athletes, too.” As far as nutrition goes, Keith sticks to a “pretty normal diet.” He nourishes his golf swing with a variety of meats, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Oh, and he loves eggs. “I have eggs almost every breakfast,” he says. But what about the cholesterol factor? “It doesn’t bother me,” he says. “If you already have a cholesterol problem, you can still eat eggs—just do three whites to every yolk,” he suggests. And there’s nothing surprising about Keith’s downfalls—pizza and hamburgers. (He laments that Chicago-style pizza is hard to come by in Indianapolis.)
A Contented Discipline We already know that Keith has never liked sitting still. But why is staying on the move so important to him? “Being active
18
ACTIVELI FEGUI DE . COM
/June 2014
When it comes right down to it, though, Keith suggests that working out just makes a person happier. “If you feel good, you’re happier—and when you’re happy, good things happen. It rubs off on those around you.” If you’ve decided that this is the day you’ll start leading a more active and fulfilling life, Keith recommends starting small by incorporating manageable life changes. “If you’ve never worked out before, start with one time a week,” he says. “Start eating breakfast if you don’t regularly, and drink more water,” he goes on to suggest. As you find yourself succeeding in these seemingly small goals, your goals will expand to broader and even more fulfilling horizons.
Helping People, Changing Lives While his father and brothers played a crucial role in his understanding of selfdiscipline and accountability, Keith points to another man as one who made an even bigger difference in his life. “I have to say I’ve been inspired more by John Wooden than anyone else,” Keith says. John Wooden, a native of Indiana, was the head basketball coach at UCLA for more than 25 years, leading UCLA to 10 NCAA national championships in a 12-year span, and being named national coach of the year six times during his tenure. Keith shared with me that Wooden never got a thank you card that he didn’t respond to, and he made a habit of writing random thank you notes to people he came in contact with each day. “His coaching career was based on helping his players become good men,” Keith says. “I follow his philosophy in helping myself and my clients.” Each year, C2C has an internal company motto. Keith tells me that last year’s was, “Meet more people, help more people.” For Keith, it’s not just about running a business—it’s about changing lives. “I hear all the time, ‘I had no idea how this could change me,’” he says. “This is why I do what I do.”
“I train like I’m competing,” Keith says.
“I consider myself to be an athlete, and I consider my golfers to be athletes, too.”

Micro Needling: The New Buzzword in Skin Rejuvenation
D
ermal needling is becoming the skin rejuvenating modality for many practitioners. In certain patients seeking skin rejuvenation, micro needling is providing equal or better results than many of the much more expensive procedures. The key to the technique is the healing process stimulated by needling. Skin needling (also called collagen induction or stimulation therapy) is a technique that uses the body’s own healing mechanisms through the production of collagen and elastin to rejuvenate and tighten the skin. The collagen plus a plethora of growth factors are activated by the process. This yields skin rejuvenation. During the treatment a group of tiny sterile needles are placed through the epidermis (the top layer of skin) and into the dermis (the second layer of skin). This creates micro channels. The body reacts by sending collagen to the injured area for repair. The abundance of collagen plumps the skin of the needled area. This causes a softer, subtler appearance of wrinkles, acne scars and other areas of depression and signs of aging. With the application of a topical anesthetic, most patients say there is minimal to no discomfort.
ACTIVELI FEGUI DE . COM
Micro needling can be used to treat the following: Wrinkles Micro needling, by increasing the availability of cell nutrients and triggering the wound healing cascade, yields more collagen and tightening of the skin in the face, neck, hands and body. Sun Damage Needling increases the availability of antioxidants and cell nutrients. The micro channels allow better delivery of products to reverse the process. Scars This technique is very effective in relaxation and improvement of scars. By mechanical breakdown of existing scars, new natural wound healing is created. Growth factor is released, creating more attractive scars. Striae (Stretch Marks) The problem with stretch marks is a thinning of skin with loss of pigmentation. The micro needling process tightens the skin and stimulates melanocyte (pigment) migration. This often diminishes the appearance of the striae. Hyper Pigmentation and Hypopigmentation
Does it hurt?
20
What conditions can be treated?
/June 2014
The creation of micro channels, along with removal of the superficial layer of the skin,
allows greater deliverability of lightening products to reduce hyperpigmentation. The micro needling process with the addition of pigment stimulation can reduce areas of hypopigmentation. Acne and Acne Scarring In addition to unroofing and decreasing the inflammatory process of acne, needling allows for delivery of antibiotics and antiacne products to the correct depth within the skin.
How does it compare to laser therapy? Needling produces many of the same results without the harsh effects. Micro needling can be used in the summer months. The technique can be used on all skin types.
Does it replace Botox?
No. We recommend a neuromodulator such as Botox to enhance the effect of micro needling.
What is the recovery time?
There is relatively no downtime. One may experience some mild redness but nothing severe. A sun screen of at least SPF 30 is recommended. Happy Clinic Indy is one of the first in this area to use the new SkinPen micro needling device. To determine if you are a candidate for this modality, please call 317 774-7777 or book online at happyclinicindy.com for a complimentary consultation.

Being prepared is your best defense!

ou’re at the pool, laid back, relaxing on a lawn chair with your sunglasses on. The weather is perfect and there isn’t a cloud in sight. You take in a huge breath of fresh air and as you are about to exhale you hear your son from across the pool yelling for help. He has fallen (again) because he somehow never seems to understand Rule #1: No Running. This situation has happened to me countless times, and I’m sure it has (or will) happen to you as well. It is always important to be prepared as you set out to the pool or beach, not only for your child’s safety, but also to give you a more relaxing and enjoyable outdoor escape.
I’d like to say that as a responsible mother of two, I did my research long ago and have always been prepared for anything and everything. But that is simply the furthest from the truth! However, I do feel as though I have done a good job of learning from all sorts of accidents, and I have established a ready-to-go pool bag that is prepared for them all. Here is what you can find in my ready-to-go pool bag:
• Sunscreen. There is a lot of controversy on the SPF number, but Care.com recommends that parents “apply early and repeat.” Care.com goes on to say the following: “For kids six months and older (as well as adults), sunscreens with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or greater reduce the intensity of UVRs that cause sunburns. Apply liberally 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure, so it can absorb into the skin and decrease the likelihood that it will be washed off. Reapply every two hours and after kids swim, sweat or dry off with a towel. For most users, proper application and reapplication are more important factors than using a product with a higher SPF.” You’ll always find two sunscreen bottles in my bag—one for back-up. We like the spray

bottled sunscreens; however, I am a bit leery on one getting stuck so I give myself peace of mind by always having an extra one in tow. • Mini First-Aid Kit. A great one is called the LifeLine First Aid WATERPROOF FIRST AID KIT, which is good for water, snow and the outdoors. However, with that being said, your First-Aid kit can be as simple as a Ziploc bag containing Band-Aids, alcohol wipes, sting relief gel and antiseptic towelettes. To purchase the First-Aid Kit referred to above: www.firstaid-product.com • Bug Spray. • Towels. In addition to packing one towel per person, it isn’t a bad idea to pack 1–2 extra towels as well. It may be a little bit more to carry, but it is one of the main ways to get everyone dry. • Extra Pair of Clothes. BabyCenter.com agrees: “No one wants to drive home in a wet and soggy swimsuit. If you plan to stay at the pool all day, pack a pair of pajamas. After a quick shower at the beach/pool your kids will be warm and cozy, ready to fall asleep the second you get home.” • For the Kids: Toys. There is absolutely no way that I can fit toys into my bag at this point, so I purchased two meshed bags, one for each of my children, and they are able to pack all the toys that they desire. What I like about the mesh is that their wet toys can easily stay in their bag and sit outside on the patio until they dry.
• For You: A Couple Magazines or a Good Book. You may also want to pack a hat and or sunglasses. Obviously, this is just a minimum, but a great start to your own pool bag. And I’d love to hear your feedback. Please share your summer care success secrets with me at www.facebook.com/hilhagner. Have a wonderful, safe summer break with your family! One 2 One Physical Therapy specializes in women’s health and pain from musculoskeletal dysfunction—SI joint, Piriformis syndrome, headaches, hip/ neck/back issues, radiculopathy, TMJ, shoulder issues, tennis or golfer’s elbow, foot pain— and the list goes on. Dr. Narayanan is one of the few physical therapists in Indiana to be certified in Trigger Point Dry Needling. “This technique uses acupuncture needles to directly influence soft tissue in vivo,” Dr. Narayanan explains, “which is more effective and ultimately the most successful modality for normalizing muscle tone.” And a quicker return to normal muscle tone means a quicker return to functional and recreational activities. The clinic also uses biofeedback and specialized software made to address women’s health issues. If pain is keeping you from living the life you’re used to, One 2 One Physical Therapy is there for you. “We are here for any one experiencing pain, who is seeking immediate relief in a minimal amount of visits by a highly qualified clinician,” says Dr. Narayanan.
