It’s a New Year! Bring On the New You!

2015! Sure has a nice ring to it, right? With each new year—in fact, with each new day!—comes a fresh opportunity to improve our lives. What’s on your list this January? Whether your goals include enhancing your look, striking a healthier life-work balance, or setting yourself up for great achievements, we at Active Life applaud and support you in your efforts.

In this issue, you’re sure to find inspiration from Natalie PerezHayden, owner of Body Mind & Core in Carmel. In 2013, Natalie moved with her husband and two youngest children from Sonoma County, California, to Carmel, where she has brought to life her dream of owning a yoga studio. We’re lucky that Natalie found her way from her native Belize, through California, and finally to central Indiana to share her dream with us! If the January blahs are hitting you hard, be sure to check out our fashion page, featuring some colorful and stylish suggestions from our staff stylist, Karina. And once you’ve found that perfect out-on-the-town look, may we suggest a date night at Miracle Sushi & Modern Asian Cuisine? We’re excited to feature Miracle in our first Eat + Drink restaurant review. If you’re a sushi lover, you’re bound to love this new hot spot. (I highly recommend the Miracle roll— my personal favorite.) If you’re not into sushi, try the 8-oz. rib-eye, Szechuan scallops, or one of their other unique Asian dishes—or just stick to a bottle of wine or snifter of scotch! We at Active Life Magazine wish you all the best in this bright new year. Live active and love life!

Refresh Your Eyes with Laser Therapy Are you ever asked, “Are you tired?” or “Are you angry?” when you really feel rested and happy?

I

f this sounds familiar, you are not alone. The genetic structure of our face, combined with aging, sun exposure and other factors, can cause the skin around our eyes to sag. Eyelids can begin to drape and develop a hooded appearance. Where there was once a clear crease in the eyelid, outlining the structure of the eye, multiple folds can develop. Fat can accumulate under the eye, causing the appearance of bags and a tired appearance.

Eyelid Improvement Techniques Thankfully, options exist for eyelid improvement. I offer patients options ranging from traditional surgery and laser surgery, to laser therapy and skin tightening using radiofrequency. In most cases, I perform my own proprietary laser eyelid technique for both upper and lower eyelid surgery. This method gives patients effective and lasting results with minimal pain and downtime. My laser techniques dramatically reduce bruising, swelling and recovery time. Additionally, these techniques offer exceptional precision and results that I have found superior to conventional surgery.

12

ACTIVE

The laser procedure I perform involves the removal of excess pads of fat and skin on the upper and/or lower eyelids. This is the excess fat that appears as a result of aging. For upper eyelids, a tiny incision is placed in the natural skin crease. The laser is utilized to remove excess skin and fat. The upper eyelid is sculpted to give an aesthetically pleasing, well-balanced look to the eye. Once the fat is removed, fine wrinkles can be more apparent. Laser exfoliation of the lower eyelids is utilized to stimulate the growth of new collagen in the lower eyelids and to shrink the residual skin. This simple procedure can restore a youthful look to the entire face. At your consultation, I perform computer imaging to demonstrate a realistic impression of what can be achieved with a laser eyelid lift. The results can be a refreshed appearance, with a younger, firmer eye area. This treatment can remove creping, sagging, or excess skin above and below the eyes. Our patient satisfaction from this procedure is outstanding.

LI FE magazine | J A N UA RY 2 0 1 5

Recovery Recovery time for eyelid surgery varies depending on the patient. In a simple upper eyelid lift, with skin and only mild amounts of fat being addressed, the recovery is relatively quick. Quick means that you will feel well in a few days, but you can expect some bruising and discoloration. The more skin and tissue that need to be addressed, the longer the recovery. In almost all cases, patients recover in about one week or less. Chernoff Cosmetic Surgeons is among the largest laser centers in the United States with multiple options for treating sagging, aging or spotted skin, wrinkles, skin tightening, toning cellulite and overall quality improvement. Our center continuously conducts research that provides our center with experience and advanced treatments. To learn more about treatment options or to schedule a consultation, call 317 593-8899 or visit www.drchernoff.com. Vampire Hair

Growth Hair loss does not discriminate. But take heart! Hope rises from within with this follicle-inducing, non-surgical procedure.

D

o you have a receding hair line, thinning hair or bald spots? If so, you are not alone. This is an old problem that can target both men and women at any age. Until now there have not been very many non-surgical treatments giving results that patients are seeking. Vampire Hair Growth® is a non-surgical procedure done right in the office with no downtime. What makes the Vampire Hair Growth work? The procedure uses the patient’s own PRP (platelet rich plasma) to re-grow hair. First, the patient’s blood is drawn like a normal blood draw you’d have at your family doctor’s office. Next, your blood is placed into a special machine that separates the plasma from the

The PRP is then injected back into the scalp after the scalp is treated with micro-needling. The micro-needling is done first to create a small injury to the area to activate the natural healing response in the body. When injected, the PRP increases the natural healing response in the body; this natural healing response heals the damaged or inactive hair follicles and allows for hair growth. This re-growth is a process and takes about six months to see full results. Some patients may need to be

treated more than once. Patients treated in our office have had very successful results and have been very pleased with the treatment, despite the scary name. If you are tired of looking in the mirror and seeing bald spots or a receding hairline, then it’s time to do more than just try to cover it up. Start the New Year off with a treatment to become a new you. If you’re interested in the Vampire Hair Growth treatment, please call our office at 317 574-1677 or visit our website, www.longevityinstitute.net for more information and to see before and after photos.

New Year, New You: Is This a Good Time for Cosmetic Surgery?

The time may just be right to take the plunge!

M

any today are contemplating cosmetic surgery procedures to restore a more youthful appearance. However, cosmetic surgical procedures require thoughtful consideration. One of the most common questions asked is, “When is the best time for cosmetic procedures?” These procedures not only involve surgical intervention, but they also require adequate time for healing and recovery. While there is no “right” or “wrong” time to enhance your appearance, there are several factors that make the winter months an optimal time to undergo cosmetic procedures. The following are some reasons you might choose to have your surgery in the cooler months..

16

ACTIVE

No interruptions. With outdoor activities, it can be tough to stay indoors and heal in summer months. It is easier to stay in and take care of yourself during the winter, as winter already lends itself to hibernation.

Less sun. It is no secret that the sun, especially its ultraviolet rays, are harmful to the skin. This harmful effect is more harsh on healing skin and fresh scars following surgery. In the recovery period, prolonged sun exposure can delay healing. The daylight hours are shorter during the winter, thereby decreasing exposure. And since the temperatures drop, most folks limit their time

outdoors. This further limits skin and fresh wound exposure to UV rays.

Time to heal. In the colder weather, it’s very acceptable to go into semi- isolation. Following a cosmetic surgery procedure, it is necessary to take the time to allow our bodies to rest, recover and heal. Since personal time is somewhat easier to find in the winter, this can go a long way in speeding the healing process.

Winter clothing. Turtle necks, sweaters, long sleeves, and cozy, more bulky clothing are less restrictive and provide ample coverage. Winter wardrobes can conceal

LI FE magazine | J A N UA RY 2 0 1 5

areas of bruising or surgical garments and protect delicate skin. When spring arrives and you are ready to show the new look, your skin and body will look great.

Perfect way to enter the New Year! Cosmetic surgery in the winter is a great way to start the New Year. It makes that fresh start all the more fulfilling since you’ll have a brand new look as well! If you are considering body contouring, a mommy makeover, liposuction, facial rejuvenation, breast surgery or injectables and fillers, now is a great time to make the most of a “New Year, New You.”

7 Ways to Beat Those Winter Blues Colored lights and shiny wrapping paper may be things of the past, but you can wrap yourself in bright, bold colors all winter long! suit your taste. It’s a subtle way to add a little spice to your look. Maybe go for a few little ones at once. Fun, fun, fun!

4. Wear your spring dress with your winter boots and a coat. One made of chiffon is soft and plays nicely with the hardness of the heavy shoe. It’s a great twist that will get attention and show off your great style. 5. Ditch the old belief that whites and light colors are forbidden after Labor Day. You can look sharp and bright today! 6. Hats, stockings, scarves and handbags. Think outside the box and get those vibrant items out of your closet. The nice thing is that any bright color pairs well with dark colors, so it’s a no-brainer. 7. Pair your favorite leggings with an oversize colorful sweater. Again, it can be a solid color or printed, but this combo will be sure to make you smile and keep you cozy. he holidays are now a thing of the past, and we’re officially off to endure the coldest and grayest month of the year without the cheer and warmth of the holidays to look forward to. The question is: How do we keep the fun in dressing in this dreadful weather? Let’s start by expanding our horizons and taking advantage of the overcast days to use them as our own personal background to shine! I’m talking color, prints and anything else that pops. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when beating the winter blues.

1. Pair your everyday dark suit with a

2. A statement shoe takes your outfit to

another level. It dresses up your office pencil skirt in the blink of an eye. They can be bright or pastels—just go for the bold.

3. Accessorize your sweater with a brooch,

a statement necklace, a stack of funky bracelets or any other embellishments that

o book or person can prepare you for parenthood. It’s a whirlwind of constant trial and error and learning from the moment your child is born. My children are now 6 and 8 years old, and I have come to the conclusion that during these past 8 years, my brain and body have been rewired. Our lives have become so busy with the expansion of family, friends, work, school and sport activities that I have completely lost the ability to relax, slow down and spend time in the moment. This has, in turn, interrupted my sleep patterns. Meanwhile, my brain has developed a constant glitch of to-dos, affecting my focus. Does this sound familiar to you?

I wish I had seen this coming, or that someone could have warned me that, like all things in life and health, tranquility takes work and practice. I would have never given up yoga 8 years ago. After so many years of this internal rewiring, I fear that retraining myself to find peace of mind will take some time. So with the New Year upon us, I am reevaluating what is truly important to me and our family. This will mean making time to slow down, better management of our activities based on our needs and not what others are doing, learning to say “no,” and being present in mind, body and spirit. Love and peace, TP

HEALTH/WELLNESS

Lose Two Pounds This Week It’s simple math, really. And it’s not as hard as you think! the candy—that way, if a sugar craving does strike, you’ll have to wait patiently for it to thaw out first. 5. Carb-Fan? Who isn’t?! • Trick your brain by replacing your mashed potatoes with pureed cauliflower. Add a dash of sea salt and garlic powder for flavor. • Zucchini pasta and spaghetti squash make for excellent alternatives. Calories Out: Exercise strategies to burn 500 calories/day 1. In the gym: Do one hour of intense cardio (elliptical, row machine, Zumba, spin class). 2. In the gym: Do 50 minutes of circuit training. Listen, I know we are nowhere near swimsuit season, but let’s not forget how good it feels to walk into your closet knowing you could put anything on and feel fabulous. Multiple holiday parties and winter festivities can leave you feeling weighed down and, well, less than fabulous. Let’s make a pact to keep those stubborn extra 5-10 pounds off all year round. We’ll start by focusing on our first week, in which we will lose 2 pounds. Scientifically, to lose two pounds in a week requires that you burn and/or cut a total of 7,000 calories. Sounds like a lot, but it adds up faster than you think! Below you will find my Top 5 strategies for reducing your calories in and increasing your calories out. Remember: The goal is to keep the weight off all year long, and in order to do that you must adapt consistency. Calories In: Diet strategies to reduce 500 calories/day 1. Don’t skip breakfast! Rev up your metabolism by eating within 30 minutes of getting out of bed. A great breakfast consists of all three of your main macronutrients: carbohydrates, protein and fat. Here are a few of my recommended options:

26

ACTIVE

• Scrambled egg whites, plus one whole egg, topped with salsa and 1/3 cup steelcut oats (Add cinnamon and Stevia for taste.) • Parfait: 0% fat Greek yogurt mixed with Stevia, a handful of fresh organic strawberries and low-sugar granola. • 1-2 slices of Ezekiel toast topped with 1-2 whole eggs and half an avocado. Add sea salt and/or pepper for taste. 2.Cut out all white table sugar and alcohol for six days. Instead of putting sugar in your coffee, strive to make it black; instead of dessert after dinner, consider eating a fruit after your workout. On the seventh day you may indulge in something sweet of your choice. If you’re not a fan of sweets, but rather crave savory foods, the same rules apply to you: no burgers and fries until day seven. • Tip: Skip your afternoon frozen yogurt for a handful of lightly salted mixed nuts. 3. Dine smart! • Tip: Chinese restaurants are wonderful when it comes to steaming brown rice, chicken and veggies. You can do a take-out order and add healthy flavors when you get home. Good add-ins could be coconut aminos (tastes like soy sauce), lemon juice and salsas. 4. Get rid of all temptation! Those bowls of candy around your house have to be put away from your daily viewing. Try freezing

LI FE magazine | J A N UA RY 2 0 1 5

3. Outside: Alternate between walking and sprinting for 40 minutes. 4. At a studio: Do 70 minutes of power yoga or Pilates. 5. At home: Clean your house for 60 minutes. 6. Fun for the family: Ice skating for 60 minutes. There are countless ways to shred the pounds, but these are what I have found to be the most realistic, fun and attainable ways. I sincerely hope you are able to apply these changes and see those last few pounds melt off.

EAT+DRINK

Miracle Sushi and Modern Asian Cuisine You love sushi. Your date would rather eat dirt. At Miracle, the menu goes miles beyond sushi. You and your date will be pleased.

S

ean Hwang, Miracle’s owner, grew up tasting food. Part instinct, perhaps, and part immersion in a culinary family, Sean always sought out the best flavor combinations in any plate set in front of him. While not technically a chef, Sean is blessed with a chef’s imagination. During the six months that went into preparing Miracle’s menu, Sean would create a sushi roll, incorporating unusual sushi ingredients such as apple, mango, lotus root, even beets—and then hand the work over to his father, master sushi chef InQ Hwang, to make sure the flavors worked together. Born on an island off the coast of South Korea, Chef Hwang began fishing at the age of seven. “The ocean was his playground,” Sean says. “My dad can tell

the freshness of fish just by looking at it.” It’s in this way that the sushi rolls you’ll find at Miracle masterfully blend tradition with the latest culinary trends. A quick glance at the menu, though, and you’ll find that Miracle is much more than a sushi restaurant. In fact, just looking around the restaurant, you wouldn’t guess that you’re in an Asian restaurant at all. The only homage to Miracle’s Asian-inspired cuisine and cocktails, other than the food and drink itself, are several pieces of a Chinese door that hang along one wall. “Our main focal point is about the overall experience,” Sean says. “We want to make sure we reach out to everybody.” Miracle’s tuna tartare is their top seller. They take fresh, sushi-grade tuna with a splash of ginger oil, then top it with a soft-boiled, panko-breaded egg. And vegetarians will be pleased to find specialty rolls beyond the usual California roll. Take the Bare Beets—cilantro, jalapeno and beets pickled in ginger juice, topped with avocado, salt and pepper—or the Edamame Crunch.

first—a spoon for each of us with a delightful nibble of steak, carrot, ginger and cilantro. We tried several rolls over the course of the evening, and everything that came to our table was so beautifully presented. None of the flavor combinations were “been-there, done-that.” The Miracle roll was light and refreshing, with the combination of tuna and lime bringing a bit of summery tang to the dish. The union of flavors in the Crispy Unagi led to a hearty and earthy roll. Venturing outside the realm of sushi, we tried the Szechuan scallops. These were tender and panseared, with a generous dollop of red chili paste on each, served over a bed of rich pork belly fried rice. Complementing the scallops was a yuzu garlic compound butter. The presentation was asymmetrical and aesthetically pleasing, with the bed of scallops on one half of the plate and the butter in two wedges on the other half, wedded to the rice by a flourish of greens. At every turn, surprising and artful combinations led us to an all-around refreshing culinary experience. “We care about every single guest that comes in here,” Sean says. “We want you to feel like part of our Miracle family.” And if you’re not into Asian food at all, Sean says, come in for the scotch—or the fine wines, or perhaps even a wasabi-infused Bloody Mary. At Miracle, it’s all up to you.

A few days before Christmas, the Active Life family celebrated their own Miracle experience. An amuse-bouche arrived

Fulfilling A DREAM Natalie Perez-Hayden

You can’t judge a book by its cover. Nor can you judge the entire discipline of yoga by your first yoga class. “It was at a Bally Fitness out in Chicago back in 1998,” Natalie tells me. “The teacher had just finished teaching the body pump weight class... We sat in a circle and stared in each other’s eyes... I was so freaked out!” A few years later, when a girlfriend asked Natalie to join her for yoga, she was dead set against it. After a little arm twisting, though, she finally gave in—and discovered a whole new world. “What I saw made me fall in love,” she remembers. “I saw 60-year-old people in better shape than I was, with this beautiful, healthy glow, and I thought, ‘This is the fountain of youth.’” Natalie discovered over time the centering power that yoga had brought to her life— and that she helps bring to others today as owner of Body Mind & Core in Carmel. Yoga opened Natalie up to live from the heart—and even to grow closer to the faith she loves. “I was not expecting that at all,” she says. “I began diving deeper into it. I saw different spiritual teachers and began to see the universal elements of the different faiths. I knew I wanted to have people experience what I was experiencing. I knew I wanted to teach.” That desire to improve lives runs in the family, it seems. Natalie Perez-Hayden grew up in Belize, a developing country

with substantially impoverished rural areas. “What I love about my parents,” she says, “is they had an incredible drive to build community.” Natalie’s father helped to bring water and electricity to many living in rural areas, and he solicited funds to start the Spanish Creek Wildlife Sanctuary. “He’s a little guy with a fire in his heart,” Natalie says. “He taught me that you’re never too little to make a difference.” It’s this philosophy that has been central to Natalie’s success with Body Mind & Core.

importance of self nurture. For her, yoga and Pilates bring the balance she needs in her life. She jokes that for her, yoga is her “husband,” and Pilates is her “mistress.” “Yoga fulfills me at a deeper level,” Natalie explains, “and the Pilates satisfies the physical traits I want.” It’s important for each of us, she says, to develop healthy living practices—proper nutrition, good rest patterns, exercise habits, stretching, taking your dog for a walk—whatever works for you. “You have to start each day with a ‘healing date,’” Natalie tells me, and this is something she tells her clients, too. “Take a bath instead of a shower... Maybe do a sugar scrub... Dedicate something to yourself.”

It was back in 2004, while living in Sonoma County, California, that Natalie fell in love with yoga; and in 2007 she decided that teaching the practice was her calling. “I knew I’d have to open my own studio if I was going to make a difference,” she says. “Yoga teachers are a dime a dozen in Sonoma County.” And so she and her husband Matt decided that when Natalie’s two older children went off to college, they’d move to Indiana to be closer to family. “We were Skyping with the cousins back in Indiana one time—they were baking sugar cookies,” she remembers. “I knew I needed to bake sugar cookies with the cousins!” Last summer brought Natalie and Matt, along with their two youngest children, to Indianapolis. The night before I met up with her, she had been up in Kokomo celebrating her niece’s 4th birthday—making sugar cookies, no less. Quality time in Natalie’s family often involves food. “We’re big foodies!” she says, enthusiastically, and her family loves to discover and dine at new “clean” and locally sourced restaurants that continue to spring up around Indianapolis. “We rarely eat processed food in our house,” she says. “When it comes in, we binge and feel disgusting after, so I prefer to eat clean.” And when Natalie and her family aren’t out blazing the foodie trail in SoBro or Fountain Square, you’ll likely find them at home. “We love to lounge around and watch a family movie,” she says. “We like going to the park with the kids, too—taking a hike at Holliday Park or Cool Creek.” Natalie sees her children as her greatest teachers. “Every day they teach me to treat people a little better,” she says. “I have to choose the words I say to them—they really keep me in check.”

Energy Within, Energy All Around Achieving work-life balance didn’t come easily for Natalie. “It was something I had to learn and make a priority in my life,” she says. “I used to lie awake at night and think about an important email I needed to send, or finding a sub for one of my teachers. Now I know my sleep’s more important.

You have to make free time for yourself— you have to create it.” Natalie can certainly thank the consistent practice of yoga for its part in helping her to achieve the balance she has in her life. “I still remember ‘the yoga high’ I got after the first class I took,” she says. “It was a sense of euphoria and peace—where nothing really matters.” Of course, it’s not that nothing really matters. Natalie recalled for me a recent meditation she’d done. “Everything has energy,” she says. “Notice the effect of drinks on your body. Or how does the energy of the lady at the diner affect you? It’s amazing how everything has an impact—food, water, clean water.” It’s that positive energy that Natalie and her teachers bring to Body Mind & Core. “Our mission is to enhance and nourish your journey in a holistic, positive environment,” she says. “I wanted to create a space that reminded people of a spa.” And in just over a year, Natalie finds herself blessed to have witnessed a yogic community rise up around her—rising up to meet her dream. At 4,000 square feet, Body Mind & Core is Indiana’s largest yoga and Pilates studio. In their in-house boutique, you’ll find clothing, purses and jewelry made right in Carmel, and they’ve recently opened a meditation studio to house a growing repertoire of lifestyle events. “We’ll be offering Thai yoga therapy, yoga therapeutics and private instruction,” Natalie explains. And in addition to their traditional offerings, Natalie’s very excited to be presenting Food & Spirit™, a multi-week program that explores “complete” nourishment. “We’ll look at seven aspects of our being,” she says, “and you’ll learn about how ancient wisdoms, when you pair them with modern understandings of nutrition and medicine, can have really powerful, positive effects on your life.” She sees every day the power of yoga and Pilates to bring positive change. “It’s so gratifying to hear people say, ‘You’ve helped me get off pain meds,’ or ‘You’ve helped me through a divorce,’” Natalie says. “One lady we have works primarily with business leaders, helping them to be better leaders. Yoga empowered her to feel confident in front of those leaders. This really touched me in a way I wasn’t expecting.” “It was a big deal moving our whole family to Indiana last year,” Natalie remembers. “With a one-year-old still nursing, setting up a website and interviewing teachers, having babies in tote. But my family was so understanding and helpful for me in finding that balance.” After all, you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do—when you’re living an active life. By Matthew Hume

TRAVEL/EXPLORE

SHANGHAI: The Best Destination in China A list of places that you must not miss when you travel to Shanghai.

The city and its residents are a synonym for Western fashion and open-minded attitudes, even during the harshest periods of the communist era.

Two dozen colossal Western structures, ranging in style from art deco to Victorian Gothic, stand side by side, forming a massive marble curtain.

Shanghai is China, but not entirely; its hybrid of Eastern and Western business and social traditions is found nowhere else in mainland China.

View it from afar and you’d think you were sailing into Liverpool. The 1,500-meter-long strip is a legacy passed down by one of the city’s former rulers, Great Britain.

Here are the things that make China’s booming commercial hub a unique place in the world’s most populous country, and places you must not miss when you travel to Shanghai.

It was largely built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to establish Shanghai as the British Empire’s trading hub of the Far East.

The Bund A number of pockets in China have impressive Western buildings—the German Quarter in Qingdao, Russian buildings in Harbin—but none provide the surreal feeling of “elsewhereness” like the Bund. The Bund refers to Shanghai’s waterfront on the west bank of Huangpu River.

The most magnificent building is today’s number 10-12, the former HSBC building. When completed in 1923, the seven-story neoclassical landmark was dubbed “the most luxurious building from the Suez Canal to the Bering Strait.” The building’s original ceiling mural managed to survive the Cultural Revolution; the octagonal mosaic painting is one of the best-kept secrets in Shanghai. It’s now in the lobby of Shanghai Pudong

Development Bank, the building’s current occupier. With the financial center’s move to the east bank of Huangpu River, the old Bund has become a new home for world-class hotels, restaurants and retailers. Skyscrapers According to Emporis, a global real estate data provider based in Germany, Shanghai ranks sixth among world cities with the most skyscrapers. There are 241 skyscrapers in Shanghai, eight fewer than Dubai, 14 more than in Seoul and 103 more than the second mainland city on the list, Guangzhou. Although towering blocks mushroom throughout the metropolis, the skyscraper center point is the Lujiazui Financial District. On the opposite side of the traditional Bund, Lujiazui appears so futuristic that it’s

become a Hollywood favorite as a setting for films, most recently featured in Her with Joaquin Phoenix.

The $5.5-billion investment will further promote Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck in the realm of the Monkey King.

Lujiazui is home to the most recognized high-rises in China, including the 468-meter Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the 421-meter Jinmao Tower and the 492-meter Shanghai World Financial Center. Since 1994, each of them has had a turn as the tallest structure in China.

International Food

Next in line is the 632-meter Shanghai Tower. Scheduled to open in 2015, the 121-story building is set to host what it claims will be the world’s tallest luxury hotel, J-Hotel. The 258-room hotel—a joint venture between Shanghai Jinjiang Hotel Group and Interstate Hotels and Resorts—will occupy the 84th through 110th floors of the Shanghai Tower. International Events and Entertainment When international events set up in China, Shanghai is as often as not the default host city. Large-scale events in Beijing tend to carry political messages, while those in Shanghai focus more on fun and glamor. The Chinese Formula One Grand Prix is one of the biggest annual events in Shanghai. It’s the only Formula One stop in mainland China. The Shanghai Masters tennis championship is attended by the highest-ranking players of the year. The week-long event is part of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000. Shanghai is also building a Disneyland. Set to open toward the end of 2015, Shanghai Disneyland will be the first Disney theme park in mainland China (Hong Kong Disneyland opened in 2005) and the sixth in the world.

High-quality international restaurants are springing up in Shanghai so quickly that it’s hard to keep track of them all. New kitchens often set up on the Bund, around Xintiandi and in the former French Concession, as rivals to the established fine-dining scene in Beijing. But look beyond the glitzy restaurant menus and into the homes of private residents, and you’ll see a tradition of international cuisine found nowhere else in China. The city’s British rulers and Russian refugees may be long gone, but their food has remained. Worcestershire sauce, that classic condiment from the United Kingdom, has a brother some 9,000 kilometers from home. Known locally as “spicy soy sauce,” Shanghainese Worcestershire sauce was first produced in 1930 to cater to the large expat market. Nowadays, the yellow-labeled bottle is ubiquitous in supermarkets. Shanghainese usually use it to accompany deep-fried pork chops. When Russians fleeing the October Revolution of 1917 came to Shanghai, they brought their borscht. The hearty beef and vegetable soup has evolved into Shanghai’s favorite comfort food. Local mothers usually cook it to treat friends and families. Pidgin English Colonial history has trickled down to Shanghai’s local lingo.

Shanghai dialect is filed with localized English words and Pidgin English cultural identifiers unique to Shanghainese. A spring lock is called “si ba lin.” Cement is “si men ting.” In Shanghainese, “on sale” can refer to a “cheap” person. Shanghai dialect is incomprehensible to a typical Mandarin speaker, whose language is largely based on pronunciation and vocabulary from northern China. Shikumen Shikumen is Shanghai’s indigenous alleyway housing. Series of stone buildings were built in the 1870s as a way to accommodate the city’s rapidly growing immigrant families. When the Communist Party took over in 1949, shikumen architecture was at its height. At that time, there were around 200,000 shikumen buildings throughout central Shanghai, each divided into tenements to house five or even ten families. As modern high-rises in Shanghai have grabbed international attention, however, these local architectural treasures have been ignored or even shoved aside. Since the 1990s, shikumen buildings have been getting pulled down more quickly than the skyscrapers rise. But you can still find them in a few corners. In Xintiandi, high-end restaurants, pubs and clubs have taken over the revamped old buildings. Tianzifang is a more Bohemian area. In its labyrinth of alleyways, indie designers hang up cocktail dresses next to self-employed vendors selling replica communist souvenirs in the courtyard. For more authentic shikumen neighborhoods, Cité Bourgogne on Shaanxi Nan Lu, and Jing’an Villa on Nanjing Xi Lu, are throwbacks to a uniquely Shanghai experience that’s rapidly disappearing.
