EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES One in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. With two 15 minute non-invasive, painless tests, Thermography scans can alert you to changes that may indicate early stage breast disease. We establish a base-line and do another scan to check for changes. Although Thermography cannot diagnose cancer, a scan might detect tumor development when it is the size of a pin head.

That is 3 to 5 years before a mammogram can do so! Now, you can detect changes in your 20’s, with no radiation or compression.

(317) 663-7123 www.hwofc.com

When used as part of a multimodal approach (clinical examination + mammography + thermography) 95% of early stage cancers will be detected.

LED Streetlights:

By Clifford Fetters, M.D.

Should You Wear Sunglasses at Night? have recourse if LED streetlights are a part of your night life. You can switch the light coming into your eyes to a more biologically friendly hue by wearing orange or rose tinted glasses that aren’t sunglasses. Examples include affordable Uvex safety glasses from Amazon, orange glasses from Low Blue Lights (these glasses are more expensive because they are scratch resistant), or rose tinted migraine glasses. Avoid night-time blue lights indoors, too

H

ave you noticed how shockingly bright streetlights are these days? Although they’re great for night time visibility, the newer LED streetlights tamper with the body’s internal clock, skewing metabolic function and raising disease risk. The effect of blue-rich white light at night on human health is so significant that the American Medical Association (AMA) issued a policy statement about street lighting.

cause problems walking or driving safely at night. Enough blue light can even damage the retina. How night-time lighting can be safer for health LED lights were introduced because they consume less energy. The AMA suggests ways to make the lighting friendlier to human biology (and that of area wildlife):

It warns LED street lights are five times more disruptive to the human sleep cycle than traditional street lighting, and that recent large surveys link brighter residential lighting with reduced sleep, poor functioning and more obesity. The lighting also increases the risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

• Lowering the color temperature of the lights away from the blue end of the spectrum (which signals to the brain that it's daytime) and towards the orange end of the spectrum. Current lights have a color temperature of 4000K to 5000K. Compare this with the use of fire and candles human have used for most of history, at 1800K. The AMA recommends lights be no bluer than 3000K.

These bright blue-white lights also strain the eyes and can

• Better shielding the light to reduce eye-straining glare.

18

ACTIVE

LI FE MAGAZINE | O CTO B E R 2 0 1 6

• Using adaptive controls to dim or extinguish the lights. Residents complaining about bright lights You don’t have to understand the science to feel the effects of these lights. Residents in areas where they are installed around the country are complaining, saying the lights feel like a car lot or strip mall parking lot. The LED street lamps also light up the insides of homes, especially in hilly areas such as Seattle. Davis, California residents found them so objectionable the city agreed to replace all existing LED streetlights with more biologically friendly lighting.

LED streetlights aren’t the only culprits when it comes to confusing your sleep-wake cycle. LED televisions, smart phones, tablets, computers and LED bulbs also bombard you with too much blue light at night, hindering the output of sleep hormones. Our staff at Health and Wellness of Carmel are now wearing special glasses for computer work to cut down on blue light and digital eye strain. Purchasing orange bulbs for lamps, orange filters to put over your screens, or wearing orange glasses a couple of hours before bed are ways to encourage the production of sleep hormones and maintain the delicate but important sleep-wake cycle.

Do you need sunglasses at night? Of course, it’s dangerous to wear dark glasses at night. But that doesn’t mean you don’t

Benefits of Becoming An Active Woman

A

little over a year ago I shared a story about my mother-in-law being diagnosed and eventually beating breast cancer. Five years have passed since, but just a few weeks ago she heard some bad news. The breast cancer has returned. In addition to that, my sister-inlaw discovered a lump as well, which thankfully turned out to be a benign cyst. However, the cyst is over two inches in diameter! Since then my sister-in-law has been on a long journey of health and fitness that hasn’t been easy, and her mom has another long battle set ahead of her. These women are not alone, and my guess is that maybe you or someone close to you has had a similar experience. Since Breast Cancer Awareness Month is here, and inactivity and obesity are on the rise

20

ACTIVE

An active life may be your strongest defense against breast cancer.

in women, my focus is for all women to increase their activity and overall health. I am not here to tell you that it’s easy, not even if your health is in jeopardy. Changing lifelong habits, making time for activity in a world built for inactivity, and battling food corporations and our own food demons is a tough and never-ending journey.

• Did you know that you can reduce your cancer risk a whopping 42% by adding two 10-minute bouts of exercise per day? That’s two small breaks, or 40 minutes of lunch with 20 minutes of walking during work. While this is a small amount of activity to add to your day it should be noted that breast cancer has also been linked to obesity. This is because the

LI FE MAGAZINE | O CTO B E R 2 0 1 6

important hormone, estrogen, thrives in body fat. According to the American Cancer Society, estrogen can stimulate the growth of breast cancer. The good news is that exercise can lower hormone levels such as estrogen. Trying to add activity to your day doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Aim for 2.5 hours of moderate intensity per week. You should notice an increase in your heart rate, and be breathless but still able to carry a conversation. Examples are walking, cycling leisurely, dancing or working in the yard. Try adding the habit (see last month’s issue on healthy habits) of taking the stairs instead of the elevator daily or parking in the farthest spot from the entrance to work.

where your heart rate increases a lot, where breathing is hard enough that you find it difficult even to carry on a conversation. Examples are jogging, cycling uphill, and even push mowing. Challenge yourself to 20 minutes of moderate activity a day, encourage others to join you, and break up the time if that’s all you can do to fit it in. You don’t have to be the next gold medal winner, CrossFit super hero or endurance junkie. Just keep standing and never stop moving! Do it for yourself, your mother, your daughter or a friend. Set an example and inspire others. The cancer information above was based on an ACE Fitness article, “How Exercise Lowers Risks of Cancer,” by Beverly Hasord, 8/17/2016.

If time is a problem, aim for 1.25 hours of vigorous activity

ne could say that Ashli Pickens has been living the active life from the time she was old enough to walk—and considering that she started dancing at the age of 2, that statement isn't too far from the truth. (Ashli remembers that first recital, dancing in a sparkly yellow and black polka dot costume to “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini.”) Growing up right here in Indianapolis, Ashli danced competitively in tap, jazz and ballet pointe throughout her academic career, from elementary school through to college. And right along side her passion for dance grew a passion for gymnastics and cheerleading. Often, when a woman says she used to be a cheerleader, images of high school pep rallies and chilly October football games come to mind. But Ashli's journey blows that stereotype out of the water. “When I was a little-bitty girl, I dressed up as a Colts cheerleader for Halloween,” she says, “and I thought, one day, how cool would that be!” Well,

A C T IV E LIF E G UIDE .COM

Ashli Pickens

when Ashli turned 18, she reached for that dream and auditioned to be an Indianapolis Colts cheerleader. Today, she holds bragging rights to both an NFL Championship and a Super Bowl ring. In 2006, her very first season, Ashli traveled to Japan with her fellow cheerleaders for a 29-day show tour, and in February 2007, the Colts went on to win Super Bowl XLI against the Chicago Bears at Miami's Dolphin Stadium, now Hard Rock Stadium—in the pouring rain. “I can remember Miami like it was yesterday,” Ashli says. “We got our hair and make-up all done, and then walked out, and boom—the rain hit us! Winning was the icing on the cake for me.” In her next year, the

I asked Ashli what she enjoys about Piloxing. “You sweat a lot, but it's so much fun!” she tells me. “It's high intensity and interval based. We might do something fast paced, then slow down to do squats, and sometimes I'll add in weights. We always wear 2.5-pound weighted gloves. You put them on and think you're OK, but give it two minutes and your arms and shoulders and core are burning with something as simple as jumping jacks!”

An Extroverted Compassion Since retiring from professional cheerleading, Ashli has applied her vivacious, extroverted personality to a number of other roles. For the past several years, she has served as Patient Care Coordinator at Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery, working with double board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Mark Hamilton. “My passion has always been health, fitness and the beauty industry,” Ashli says. “Working with Dr. Hamilton has been a perfect fit, and as part of my role, I get to hear other people's stories and help them to make what could be one of the biggest decisions of their lives.” Ashli meets and coordinates with patients and their families, assists patients in making surgical decisions, schedules surgeries, coordinates surgery centers, takes surgical photos, performs video imaging, and most importantly, acts as liaison between Dr. Hamilton, and patients throughout the entire surgery process. “I'm a very compassionate person, both in my personal life and in my job,” Ashli says. “I really enjoy connecting with patients, and my goal is always to exceed expectations of patients and their families, and to help patients look and feel their

"People people" Believe it or not, Ashli does know how to slow down and relax. In May 2015, Ashli married her husband Cody in a destination wedding in Turks and Caicos, and since then, the couple has called Westfield their home. Ashli tells me that while children may be in their future, for now the couple is focused on their two “furry” kids, Arlo and Theo—Petite “Teddy Bear” Goldendoodles. “We love taking them traveling with us, although we haven't flown them yet,” she says. “We went to Charleston, SC, recently and took them to the ocean. When they're not working or playing with their “kids,” the couple—Ashli describes them both as “people people”— thrive on building new relationships with people, whether it's through their world travels or their exploration of new local destinations. “We still stay in touch with some of the islanders we met in Turks and Caicos,” she says. And while the couple generally eats clean during the week,

Colts cheerleaders toured the Mediterranean on an AFE show tour, exploring Egypt, Greece, Italy, Spain, Jordan and Turkey. “We got to ride camels through the Pyramids in Egypt, and we got to float in the Dead Sea. The travel opportunities were incredible.” When all was said and done, Ashli cheered for six years with the Colts, serving as squad captain and fitness captain, in addition to her tours with the AFE and USO show tour groups. “My time with the Colts was just the most unbelievable experience. And getting to cheer in the Super Bowl, seeing it all from the field? Those were the best seats in the house.”

Ashli admits that they're both foodies. “If it's been a hard day for us, we'll sometimes decide to treat ourselves by trying out some creative and trendy new restaurant in town.”

“I do miss cheerleading sometimes,” Ashli says. “I'm at a different stage in life now, but cheering in front of 71,000 people really gives you chills.”

Ashli and her husband also look to travel for opportunities to get to know different cultures. “One of our favorite trips was to Sonoma County and the Napa Valley to tour the different wineries,” Ashli says. “And we recently went to Europe, just the two of us. We went to Lyon, France, to visit some friends there. In Paris we ate dinner in the Eiffel Tower. We visited London and Milan... we really enjoyed the wine in Italy...and the carbs,” she laughs. (We had a brief sidebar on how much “healthier” whole wheat pasta is. We joked that we share the same thought process.) “I feel so blessed to be able to wrap health, fitness and aesthetic/beauty all up into the life I have,” Ashli tells me. Of course, she hopes to travel more with her husband—the two of them currently have some island destinations in mind—but Ashli truly couldn't be any happier. “I love my job and what I'm doing, and I don't know how I got so lucky to have found the man I married,” she says. “I look forward to continuing the work I do for Dr. Hamilton and his patients, and I look forward to years of working out and teaching for fun—and to starting a family with Cody one day.”

inding time to exercise is hard, but you can maximize your results by adding compound movements like the squat to your routine. Squats may be one of the most popular exercises out there and one of the best compound exercises for total fitness. A compound movement is a multi-joint movement involving more than a single muscle group. Activating more than a single muscle group at a time not only helps with strength but also with coordination, calorie burn and flexibility. Here we have combined three simple squat movements to spice up your routine. To perform the traveling squat medley, first review the proper squat stances below. Begin with the close stance squat, walk your right foot out for a shoulder-width stance, and then walk that same right foot out for the sumo squat. You will then work the right leg back in with another shoulder-width squat and then a close stance squat. Repeat on the left side. You have now completed one rep. Begin with 3 reps of body weight only, working up to 5 reps with a set of 5 to 10 pound dumbbells.

Lower yourself down by bending your knees while keeping your shins vertical (knees behind the toes). Continue to lower yourself until your thighs are almost vertical to the floor. Return to standing with an exhale, pushing your feet into the floor through your heels, while the hips and torso rise together.

Trends in Modern Master Bathroom Design

S

imple in style and tranquil in feel, trends in modern master bathroom design have turned towards the “less-is-more” philosophy to help you in creating that highly desired soothing oasis, all within the comfort of home. How can you achieve this look in your bathroom? Follow these three simple steps to transform your ordinary space into an extraordinary master retreat.

1. Keep it Clean

2. Ditch the Roman Tub

Select soft monochromatic gray tones throughout the room, and pair them with contrasting harsh lines to create a quiet sense of comfort with a bit of an edge. Sleek, frameless cabinetry floating above large format rectilinear floor tile mimicking the look of concrete or a linear marble take the word “contemporary” to a whole new level. Choose square-edge plumbing fixtures with minimal detail to complete the look.

Twenty-plus years ago, the large surround with an oversized jetted tub in a master bathroom was viewed as a spa-like luxury. Nowadays, it’s typically seen as an eyesore taking up valuable real estate. Eliminate the tub surround and enlarge the shower. It’s usually where most consumers bathe every morning, anyway—so why not make that your new spa? Create a large seamless enclosure with a recessed niche for your soaps, a bench and all the fix-ins (a typical shower head, a hand-held and maybe a rain head or body sprays if design and space allows). And if your bathroom is large enough, a sleek freestanding soaker tub can create the perfect focal point.

3. Don't Forget to Accessorize While we encourage simplicity and minimalism when it comes to modern design, it's okay to have a little fun with some of the finishing touches. Pick out a sophisticated chandelier with a little bling to put in the middle of the room. Select polished oversized hardware to dress up the flat panel cabinet doors. And if you’re feeling really daring, venture back into the gold finishes again. They are making a surprisingly strong comeback in the design of today’s modern bathrooms. We’d love to help you create your master bathroom hideaway today!

The small island of Bora Bora (just 6 miles long and more than 2 miles wide) overflows with beauty. Dormant volcanoes rise up at its center and fan out into lush jungle before spilling into an aquamarine lagoon.

St. Martin-St. Maarten

If you associate the Caribbean with a laid-back atmosphere, a tranquil beach and a quiet sunset, then you haven't been to feisty St. Martin-St. Maarten.
