EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES One in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. With two 15 minute non-invasive, painless tests, Thermography scans can alert you to changes that may indicate early stage breast disease. We establish a base-line and do another scan to check for changes. Although Thermography cannot diagnose cancer, a scan might detect tumor development when it is the size of a pin head.

That is 3 to 5 years before a mammogram can do so! Now, you can detect changes in your 20’s, with no radiation or compression.

(317) 663-7123 www.hwofc.com

When used as part of a multimodal approach (clinical examination + mammography + thermography) 95% of early stage cancers will be detected.

NeoGraft A Less Invasive Option For Hair Restoration With

recent advances in hair restoration technology, you don't have to accept your fate with “bad hair genes” anymore.

H

air loss affects two out of every three men and one in five women.

The

results of this can be

difficult to take and can have a real effect on our psychology.

Many

report a decrease in their

confidence and lower self-esteem.

Even 35

years

ago, the possibility for a natural correction

of hair loss was limited.

Fortunately,

today there are many

outstanding options for the treatment of hair loss.

Hair transplantation has long been a proven and safe technique Unfortunately, many are still leery of the process because of reported discomfort, potential scarring and the possibility of unnatural results. Follicles Hair Loss Clinic is now offering NeoGraft, a device that effectively for the correction of hair loss.

reduces the risks and downtime for many hair transplant patients.

Hair

transplant involves the removal of hair grafts from the

back of the head—hairs that stay with most of us even if we

thin or go bald everywhere else!—and moving them to areas

that need them the most, such as in the front or in the crown. Because these hairs are genetically different, they will stay with us for life and provide a long-term correction of hair loss in areas where they are placed.

NeoGraft minimizes the discomfort and visible scarring that can

occur with this process.

In

addition, it speeds up follicular unit extraction, the detailed

process that allows for a more minimal approach.

The chances

for complications such as bleeding or numbness are reduced as well.

With

this technique, patients no longer require a long linear

incision and the stitches—or the potential scar—associated with it.

This greatly decreases discomfort as well as downtime in those patients who are candidates.

LI FE MAGAZINE | SE PTE M B E R 2 0 1 6

How does the NeoGraft process work? Basically, there are four steps: 1. The NeoGraft device is used to remove hair from the back of the scalp. Here the hair is genetically programmed to resist testosterone and remain vibrant and healthy no matter where it is placed. 2. Each graft is extracted with the ideal diameter and length by the NeoGraft device for optimal take. 3. Your hair transplant surgeon then designs and creates the recipient sites in the proper angle direction and orientation for the most natural results possible. 4. Each graft is meticulously placed in locations in the recipient area for the most rejuvenated yet natural appearance. NeoGraft is ideal for younger, active patients who wear their hair

short and would not tolerate a linear scar in the posterior scalp. NeoGraft allows for a nearly undetectable result that provides hair rejuvenation with no limitation on lifestyle. Those who want a more minimal approach will appreciate this technique as well. The first step to exploring your options at Follicles Hair Loss Clinic begins with a physician consultation to evaluate your hair loss and its cause. Together we can explore the many options for correction, including medical therapy, PRP (platelet rich plasma), low level light therapy/LaserCap, or hair transplantation with or without NeoGraft. The options for restoring your hair have never been better.

Cherie Palma Thousands upon thousands of people around the world have latched onto Richard Simmons' highly motivational, highly contagious—and yes, often made-fun-of— brand of fitness transformation. But it's not every day that you meet a fitness industry pro who was personally inspired by him. Cherie Palma—a coach at Orangetheory Fitness in Carmel—got to meet the guru face-to-face. “In college I gained a lot of weight, and when I met my husband I'd put on more than 40 pounds,” Cherie says. “Every single day, I'd walk and walk, and I thought I was eating right, but I just couldn't lose it.” The year was 1991. Cherie and her husband, a fighter pilot with the Navy, had just had their first child. Two weeks later, her husband was sent off to fight in the Gulf War, running sorties on F-18s. “I didn't talk to him for seven months, other than letters—we weren't allowed phone calls,” she remembers. “The stress of that, along with wanting to take better care of myself and our son for when he got back, made me want to do something.” That's where Richard Simmons stepped in, meeting in groups with wives of the men fighting, providing a special recipe of hope and inspiration. “I fell in love with him!” Cherie says. “He was so motivational and just

A

absolutely amazing, and he was the shot in the arm that everyone of us needed.” From that time on, there's been no looking back. Cherie started going to the workout center on the base every day, using the childcare they provided, and she started studying for her personal training and aerobics certification through the American Council on Exercise. “That was just the beginning,” she says. For almost 26 years now, Cherie has devoted herself to helping people reach their fitness goals. When she first got started, Cherie spent much of her time teaching step aerobics, which was hugely popular in the 90s. “High-intensity interval training wasn't even on the scene yet,” she says, “but I did a lot of kickboxing and cycling back then, too.” When yoga emerged as a major player in the Indianapolis fitness scene, Cherie obtained her yoga certification. And until very recently, Cherie made it a point only to train women. “Being a mom, I really have connected with women over the years,” she says. “My goal all along has been to make women feel good about themselves, make them feel powerful, help them reach their goals.” Cherie carries this philosophy with her wherever

she teaches, and she's expanded her reach to include the men she now teaches, too. Currently, she serves as Yoga Coordinator at Castle Creek's Lifetime Fitness, and she's also a Yoga Alliance certified instructor (teacher trainer). Last year Cherie joined the staff at Orangetheory Fitness in Carmel, where she coaches the 60-minute Orangetheory Workout—a combination of indoor rowing, heart-rate based treadmill interval training, and weight training blocks, scientifically designed to burn calories and boost metabolism for up to 36 hours post-workout. “I enjoy working at Orangetheory because the members are wonderful, and the workout is amazing and a lot of fun to coach!” Cherie says. “I really take time to learn about each person's specific, individual needs.”

Striking an Effective Balance Cherie counts herself very lucky and blessed to serve the needs of her clients, to follow her own passion for fitness, and at the same time to have a richly nourishing family life. “I'm blessed that my children made space in their lives to let me take time from the house while they were growing up,” she says. “It wasn't always easy on the family.” I asked Cherie to elaborate. “When my children were growing up, my husband was a pilot for American Airlines, and he'd be gone sometimes for up to a week for work,” she says. “I had to put limits in place on my own work to make sure I was home before the children got home from school. Thankfully, my clients were understanding, and I could usually rearrange my schedule to make baseball games and gymnastics meets.” But Cherie doesn't claim to have been perfect, and even the best

High Fliers

s if being a world-traveling yogi, fitness coach, and wife and mother isn't enough for Cherie, she's also part of her husband's charter flight business, Solutions Aviation. “For years, Tim flew for the Navy, then for American Airlines, and he finally decided he wasn't going to let anyone else control his destiny anymore,” Cherie says. So for the past two and a half years, Solutions has flown clients all over the country in the six planes they use for their business. In addition to flying charters, Solutions also brokers sales of jets, planes and helicopters around the world. Cherie's particularly excited about the G-4 jet they're having remodeled inside and out. “It's going to be amazing,” she says. “And we'll surely go traveling somewhere with it. One thing that really makes life go 'round is traveling, and it's one reason we work as hard as we do.”

juggling acts can occasionally drop a ball. Case in point: the time she forgot to make her daughter's lunch. “She'll never let me live this one down!” Cherie laughs. “I left one morning, when they were in middle school, without making her lunch. Apparently, their father was on the phone, and her brother made lunch for her instead—and when she looked in her lunch box, all he'd packed for her was a banana. She burst out crying: 'I can't just eat a banana!' They were already at the bus stop, and the bus was coming in two minutes. But she told her brother to run home and find something else. Well, by the time he got back to the bus stop, the bus was waiting, and the bus driver gave him a real tongue lashing. My poor kids! I wasn't perfect all the time.” Today, Cherie and her husband Tim, and their three grown children, Blake, CJ and MacKenzie, thrive on the love and laughter that come when they're together. “Our favorite kind of evening includes going for a walk with the dogs, or going on a bike ride together, coming home and cooking a delicious dinner, and having some great wine, sitting and laughing around the table,”

she says. And Cherie tells me that the only thing they love more than eating as a family is traveling as a family. “We've been to the Everglades, we've gone golfing in Naples together. Whether it's sail boating, pontooning, you name

Inspired Living In talking with Cherie, I learned there was more to this travel thing than first meets the eye. In fact, travel fuels her like nothing else. “It's how I fill my cup,” she says. “I get to know other cultures and meet beautiful people around the world, and learn everything about other ways of life.” Cherie has traveled to and done yoga in Mexico, Costa Rica and Puerto Rico, and through her travels she's become more aware of her footprint on the earth. “In Mexico, just outside of Todos Santos, I slept in a tent on the beach for six weeks,” she tells me. It was her first trip outside the country on a yoga retreat, and she was in for a big surprise. “There were 16 or so other people. I wasn't the oldest or the youngest, but I brought the most 'stuff' of anyone there. Some came

with just a backpack. I brought a mattress pad, yoga pants, T-shirts, sweatshirts, just a ridiculous amount.” She realized there was no need for all of it. The group washed clothes in buckets, grew their own food, stayed outside the whole time—and had to turn in cell phones upon arrival. “To disconnect from everything you know—to sleep under the stars with the tarantulas and the donkeys—that was incredible and eyeopening.” Anyone who meets Cherie senses right away the immense joy of living she exudes, and the greatest part of that joy comes from her marriage and children. As for her work, Cherie derives joy from the difference she's making in the lives of her clients. “I hope that when I'm with people, I can make them forget about what's going on in their lives, to make them laugh and have fun, even though they're working their butts off,” she says. “I'm constantly asking people to set achievable goals—to find a friend and go on a walk—to get moving and to make it fun.” Because why shouldn't active living be fun— right?

Healthy Habits

By Tatum Pérez, Personal Trainer all is here, and it's my favorite season of the year!

What’s

not to love? There’s pumpkin smoothies, apple cider, changing leaves, cooler days for outside fun, and football.

On the flip

side, it also means school is back, creating busier schedules of homework, extracurricular activities and sports, more traffic for commuters, and the spread of flu and other viruses.

Sure,

some of our commitments and responsibilities can be thrown out, but the majority of it just comes with the territory of work and family.

So how can

we stay healthy this fall season in our fast-paced and busy lives? It starts by creating new habits.

Habits. We

all have them, some good and some bad.

thing about habits, according to scientists at

USC,

The

interesting

is that they stick no

matter if you are tired or lack the energy to think.

This goes even for (To learn more about the study, go to news.usc.edu/#!/ article/51501/51501/.) The more good habits that you create and practice, the more likely you are to stick with them during hectic times. Trying something new when you lack time and energy typically isn’t appealing. The key to creating new habits is keeping them simple, but also convenient by planning ahead. New habits take, on average, two months to create, so the good ones.

setting up visual cues or reminders can help until they truly become second nature.

I also suggest just adding one or two small healthy habits to help Once you have established the first habit, add another one. Below are a few examples for creating new healthy habits this fall to get you started before the holiday season hits. crowd out the not so good.

NUTRITION 1. Add a daily breakfast by prepping for the week ahead with small containers of dry ingredients for a smoothie or an omelet. Then simply dump and blend, or use the Egg-tastic for a quick and easy omelet in two minutes or less. 2. Have a bottle of water next to your bed nightly. First thing in the morning, drink it entirely before getting out of bed or leaving your room. 3. Place a bowl of fruit on the counter instead of hiding it away in the refrigerator. This way you will be more likely to reach for fruit when hunger strikes. FITNESS 1. Pack a gym bag before bed, and start by setting an earlier alarm daily. Even if you just get up and eat your breakfast or shower, eventually you will be ready to head to the gym. 2. After work, practice changing into your gym clothes—even if you don’t drive to the gym at first. 3. Set an alarm at your office desk and walk one loop inside or outside your building once per day, eventually working up to twice per day. MENTAL HEALTH AND HAPPINESS 1. Write down one positive thought about life each day. 2. Shut down TV, computers and phones after dinner each night. 3. Schedule occasional vacation time even when there seems to be no time. Start with one day of getting away from work, home chores and daily routines. Remember:

1 CROSS The cross is a basic punch with your right hand. First, let’s start by getting in the basic fighting stance. Set your legs shoulderwidth apart, slide your right leg back and turn your right foot to a 45-degree angle. You should be able to fit two bowling balls between your legs. Next, you should be an arm's length away from the bag, and your glove should just kiss the bag when you extend your left arm. This is the perfect distance from the bag. Now, bring the right shoulder forward and move the left shoulder back simultaneously. As you do that, bring up your right heel, press the ball of your foot into the mat, and pivot. Make sure to fully extend your right arm, keep your hand in a tight fist with your fingers facing down towards the mat, and hit with the first two knuckles.

A C T IV E LIF E G UIDE .COM

3

WORKOUT ROUTINE LEFT HOOK Looking to tone up those arms some more? To throw a left hook, you’ll want to start in the basic fighter stance just like the cross. Start the hook by dropping your left elbow by your left hip and bending your arm in a 90-degree angle. Make sure your left fist is clenched and your wrist is straight, as if you were holding a mug of your favorite beverage. Your left thumb should be pointing up in the air—and remember not to spill your drink! Now, imagine there is a string attached from your left elbow to your left ankle. As you rotate your body, the string will lift your heel off the ground and you will pivot on the ball of your foot. Your entire left side should be rotating towards the bag. Make sure you are leading and landing the left hook with the first two knuckles and keeping your arm bent at a 90-degree angle. The pivot is key to getting your left arm to reach the bag!

RIGHT ROUNDHOUSE One of the most hard-hitting and core-strengthening signature moves is the roundhouse. To start, you always want to be in the basic fighter stance. From here, step up and out with your left foot about six inches both ways. Next, pivot on the ball of your left foot and rotate your hips to swing your right leg around. As you rotate, imagine you are wearing pants with stripes on the side, and try to get the stripes to face the ceiling. Doing so will allow your shin to properly make contact as you extend your leg toward the bag.

Using

Functional Medicine to

BOOST

Libido Your

W

e often think of good health in terms of blood pressure or cholesterol levels, but your libido is also an important indicator. If yours has gone missing, it could be a red flag that important underlying health issues need to be addressed.

People who turn to functional medicine for other health issues, such as low thyroid function, an autoimmune disorder, or depression, often report a boost in their libido thanks to theirprotocol. Of course, it’s natural to expect low libido following a major stressor or during an unhealthy relationship, but if it’s chronically absent, investigate why.

Common Causes of Low Libido

zoning out in front of Netflix more tantalizing than a roll in the hay.

Below are some common causes of low libido that can be addressed through functional medicine.

Adrenal fatigue. Your adrenal glands secrete stress hormones to help you manage life’s daily ups and downs. Most people are so stressed out not only from their lifestyles, but also their diets, chronic inflammation, gut health problems and other health issues, that their adrenal function is fried. This is one of the primary causes of hormonal imbalances in men and women, delivering a double whammy to libido.

Blood sugar imbalances. Many people eat more carbohydrates than their body can handle, they skip meals or they consume too much caffeine. Eating habits that send blood sugar constantly soaring and crashing will eventually lead to fatigue, irritability, sleep problems and depression. All of these make

24

ACTIVE

LI FE MAGAZINE | SE PTE M B E R 2 0 1 6

Leaky

gut. Leaky gut means inflammation has made the lining of the small intestine too porous, allowing undigested foods and other pathogens to escape into the sterile bloodstream. This causes inflammation throughout the body, which typically leads to pain, fatigue, depression and other unsexy symptoms.

Food

intolerances. Can a gluten or dairy intolerance really cause low libido? Yep. When you constantly eat a food that triggers an immune reaction, you send your body into an inflammatory tailspin. How you react depends on your genetic makeup. Symptoms include flare ups of your autoimmune disease, skin rashes, gut problems, joint pain, depression, migraines, anxiety, fatigue, brain fog, and, you guessed it, no desire for sex. You can run a food panel at Health and Wellness of Carmel to figure out which foods rob you of vigor, or follow an autoimmune diet for at least a month before reintroducing foods.

Diminished

brain

function.

They say the biggest sex organ is the brain, and it’s true. Many people today suffer from a brain that is aging too fast,

besieged by inflammation, not getting properly oxygenated, struggling from poor fuel supply, or suffering from poor activity of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. Although all of these issues can often be addressed with the functional medicine basics we just mentioned, various nutritional compounds can also help boost brain function and, as a result, libido. These are just a few underlying causes of low libido. Sometimes, of course, it’s more complicated, especially if you are unhappy in your relationship, suffer from low self-esteem, or run yourself ragged by putting others’ needs before your own. However, don’t shrug off low libido as no big deal. You could be missing out not only on the health benefits of regular sex, but also on the opportunity to address an underlying health concern. If you feel something is missing in your love life, it may be easily fixed. You can contact our office at (317) 663-7123 and arrange a consultation, and remember to share this article if you know anyone suffering with these symptoms.

The Parker is American Leather's softest rendition of a tight-back, tight-seat sofa ever made. It has 83" of sitting space between the arms, perfect for an afternoon nap. It also has a buttonless tufted seat and back that is stitched in to the frame so you won't have to worry about the cushions sliding or shifting. The entire silhouette rests on your choice of metal or wood legs that stretch front to back and are slightly offset for that special modern look. The Boss Relaxer by IMG Norway is one of the most comfortable recliners on the market. With its rocking, gliding, swivel base, you have a full range of motion to maximize your comfort level. wide range of leather and fabric alternatives selected to suit many homes and lifestyles. It has an interior steel frame with sinuous springs encased in coldcure molded foam, ensuring correct back and lumbar support. The Astrid bed is handcrafted in Vermont from solid walnut. Its deeply splayed, dark chocolate maple legs make for dramatic cantilevers, and the Astrid Bedroom is an engineering feat that defies all expectations. A true platform bed, the Astrid Bedroom is also crafted in a combination of solid cherry or solid maple, with several finish options. This bed is a musthave in all mid-century modern homes. the perfect light in any room. What makes it my favorite new light is that it is a sculpture by day and a great light at night. The Contour’s premium wood and woven fabric interiors provide an inviting resting place for your books, precious objects, or for charging your mobile devices with its integrated USB port. The Corridor media cabinet is hands-down the best TV stand we have ever sold at Houseworks. Thoughtfully designed with the newest technology in mind, the louvered doors allow speakers' sound and remotes to pass through, while keeping your components beautifully hidden behind the doors. It is available in five models with the option of a white oak or chocolate-stained walnut finish. The top is a microetched glass that is scratch- and finger-print resistant.

Canoe Trips Canoe or kayak camping is a great way to see the great outdoors, get some exercise and have some fun with family and friends. With thousands of rivers, the task of deciding which river to choose can be an overwhelming one. So Active Life has put together a list of our top picks of rivers to go canoe camping, allowing you just to relax, pick one, and have the time of your lives.

Midwest – Current River (Missouri) The Current River is certainly one of the best in the country, but it strongly vies for title of the best river for canoeing in the whole USA. The river is a spring-fed stream that almost always has perfectly clear and cool waters, discharged in adequate volumes for that ideal canoeing experience. The Current River is included in the National Scenic Waterways—all 90 miles of it. 34

Northeast – Delaware River (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware) One of the best things to look forward to when planning a canoe camping trip to the Delaware River is the scenery of dramatic forest-covered mountains, rocky bluffs and trees of sycamore and other kinds that line the river banks. The Delaware flows into a valley, which gets wider as you go downstream.

South – Sabine River (Texas and Louisiana) If you are looking for a trip with lots of unspoiled country scenery, white sand beaches, amazing campsites and peace and quiet, you will agree with us that the Sabine River is one of the best this country has to offer. If you fancy long, easy floats, consider the lower Sabine, as it is the easiest.

West – Green River (Utah) The Green River is one of the best long canoe camping trips in the country, and it's our absolute favorite canoe camping destination in the West. The Green River starts its journey from open country, but then dramatically weaves in and out of the Labyrinth and Stillwater Canyons. It passes through the famous Canyonlands National Park, the largest national park in Utah.
