EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES One in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. In a mere 15 minute non-invasive, painless test, a Thermography scan can alert you to changes that may indicate early stage breast disease. Although Thermography cannot diagnose cancer, a scan might detect tumor development when it is the size of a pin head. That is 3 to 5 years before a mammogram can do so! Now, you can detect changes in your 20’s and beyond, with no radiation or compression.

(317) 663-7123 www.hwofc.com

When used as part of a multimodal approach (clinical examination + mammography + thermography) 95% of early stage cancers will be detected.

mmersing yourself in the redwood canopy of California's Muir Woods. Experiencing the sea salt wonder of the Pacific Ocean along the Marin Headlands coast. Pondering the limits of human engineering while admiring the Golden Gate Bridge. A trip to San Francisco and the surrounding region can be a life-changing and invigorating experience. But the first week of December each year, a very determined group of athletes takes the Golden Gate experience to a whole new level by competing in the North Face Endurance Challenge. Patrick Sells remembers less the serene majesty of the route, and more the monstrous changes in elevation, over 10,000 feet, and the way the muddy trails impeded his forward progress. This was Patrick's first ultramarathon—a 50K course, in this case—and he still remembers it well, if not entirely fondly. “I remember getting to Mile 18 and stopping at the aid station and even checking in at the ambulance,” he tells me. After sitting alongside the trail for a half hour or so, he began to accept that he had failed—and this is where evidence of Patrick's entrepreneurial endurance becomes apparent. As the idea of failure set in, he knew he could accept the failure as it was, or he could push on farther. “Either way, it was going to be the same end—a ride to the finish and a failed race,” he says. “So at that point, I just focused on taking one step at a time and told myself, 'Step, step, step,' until I finished the race.”

Unlocking Potential Patrick's approach to conquering that brutal 50K tells volumes of his attitudes towards failure. And as any entrepreneur will tell you, one must come to terms with both wins and losses. “I will never define myself or be defined by others as the consequence of any action—I don't care about failure,” he tells me. “Consequences, or failure, is real and should be avoided if possible, but it's not the final step in any decision or action.” But he says that most of us are so determined to make failure the be-all, end-all. “Every failure will lead to growth, and that is a positive defining end. So when I fail, I only care that I grew and can overcome it.” I asked Patrick what it means to him to be an entrepreneur. “The best definition I've heard is that it's anyone who creates the world

around them they want to live in, and to the degree they do this, the more successful they often are,” he says. “I believe my bigger purpose is to unlock the people and the world around me for limitless growth.” Patrick started his first business before he had even finished high school. “It was called Jaygle, and it was a gamified version of what ultimately would become Groupon or LivingSocial,” he says. But despite the tens of thousands of users the site attracted, the company was bankrupt in under a year. “After that experience, I knew I would always try to build a business.” In 2012, Patrick founded Sells Group, an Indianapolis-based marketing agency, of which he is Chief Executive Officer. “Sells Group has always been a bit of an innovation studio for me,” he says. “From a market perspective, we're really about unlocking the potential of marketing in particular. So many companies don't really know how to make marketing a malleable tool they control, and Sells Group is one of the only agencies that is willing to use performance metrics to hold us accountable to what clients invest. It’s all about understanding the metrics and data that matters.” Being held accountable means that Sells Group offers credit or cash back when they fall short of their goals for clients. For Patrick and his philosophy of unlocking the world's potential, it all comes down to the idea of helping business owners grow. But Patrick also believes that businesses should look beyond their own profits to the greater world around them. “Of course, profit is the heartbeat—without it, businesses can't succeed,” he says, “but businesses were meant to be so much more.” Sells Group has always donated at least 10% of company earnings to causes both local and global. “The money Sells Group earns and is put in charge of isn't ours and should be given back. This is tied into what I personally believe the Christian faith teaches on tithing as well,”

Patrick says. “Giving back, especially to the community, gives companies a way to tap into their larger purpose.”

Know Thyself Just as there is more to a business than turning a profit, there is certainly more to Patrick than his entrepreneurship. “My wife, Sarah, grew up in Little Rock, and she is truly a Southern belle,” Patrick says. (He also says it took a while for him to get accustomed to her and her family's southern way of life!) “Sarah is a harpist and spends several hours a day practicing or training, and she loves to cook for us and others. She's an interior designer here in Indianapolis,” he says. The couple are getting ready to have their first child, and Patrick couldn't be more excited. He looks forward to being a dad, and to facing and embracing the challenges and triumphs that go along with it. How does Patrick even begin to balance his life as a business executive, husband and father-to-be? In short, he measures in days, not hours. “We try to cram in enough things we love to stay energized, do as many things we don't like without boring ourselves, and then with whatever time we have left, we call that our 'free time,'” he says. “But that rarely happens, and when it does, we either are too tired, or too last minute for it really to be anything other than wasted time. A great entrepreneur taught me to categorize days into free days, focus days, and buffer days— and at least 80% of the day should align with its classification.” Patrick describes these classifications as follows. Focus days are for things we love doing and which make the most money. Buffer days are for delegation, fixing problems and preparation. Free days are about doing the things that recharge us. “The key to this framework is to set the criteria and then adhere to them,” Patrick says. You'll notice this days-not-hours framework makes no mention of quality time with loved ones. But there he makes

will lead to growth, and that is a positive defining end,” says Patrick. “When I fail, I only care that I grew and can overcome it.”

allowance. For Patrick, family relationship building comes from being near those he loves. “It's about physical presence for me,” he says, “whether we're actively doing something, passively watching an event, or even doing our own things—that's OK with me, too.” Patrick has another unique way of looking at balance—in terms of our own personal “integration ratios.” (This is for all the chemistry geeks in the audience—and yes, I include myself in that number.) “Everyone has their own elements to integrate,” he says. “Hydrogen and oxygen integrate at a ratio of 2:1 to create water; but hydrogen and nitrogen at a ratio of 3:1 creates ammonia.

20

ACTIVE

LI FE MAGAZINE | J UN E 2 0 1 6

My point is that it comes to knowing thyself and what elements and at what ratios are key to you, and then forgetting what anyone else thinks about your ratio or what their ratio is.” For instance, if Patrick's not tired, then he doesn't want to force himself to sleep. If he feels the need to take a run during the day, he'll reschedule a meeting if he can to go do it. “There are times when you have to push against what you want, but I think keeping it all together comes down to knowing thyself, which is a lifelong journey.”

Onward, Upward Patrick looks forward to the coming years with great anticipation—both personally

and professionally. “So far, 2016 has been the most prolific of my career,” he says. “I'm proud of the people that have come, stayed, and even left Sells Group. We are on the verge of really maturing into a great business, and I want to see it grow and thrive as a result of the people who join our team.” And, of course, 2016 will be the year Patrick becomes a father, adding another valuable element to his integration ratio. “I've always wanted a big family and love being around babies and young kids and the imaginations and joy they have,” Patrick says. “My goal with our child is to adjust to being a dad and to be humbled by the experience, and all the joy and the pain to come.” And that is a lofty goal indeed.

My Side • Bacteria can get trapped into the coarse hair of a beard and grow and get transmitted from the beard to the mouth. • Folliculitis, a pain inflammation caused by ingrown beard hairs. • Allergy flare-ups due to pollen and dust collecting in the beard. • More upkeep with shaving the neck, and trimming and buzzing facial hair. • It’s scratchy and tickles. • Food gets caught in it.

His Side • Thick facial hair can help protect the skin from sun damage. • Less blemishes or skin rash and irritation caused by shaving. • Allergy relief because the facial hair acts more like nose hair, keeping the allergens out. • Keeps the cold dry air out, helping the skin to stay softer. • Beard oil can be applied to soften the hair like conditioner. So it appears that it’s a draw and just a matter of preference. My husband and I compromised: The beard stays, and he promises to apply beard oil and to wash it regularly to keep it clean. I have learned that I will never win this battle, but oh well—what can I say? After all, he does look good in a beard.

Let’s Talk About Pecs,

hether you are a newbie or a veteran, love ‘em or hate ‘em, performing pushups is one of the best body weight exercises for several reasons! Push-ups not only strengthen your pectorals major, but also the front deltoids and triceps. Building a strong, broad chest and shoulders helps give the illusion of a smaller waistline and looks great in a fitted work shirt or T-shirt. And while the bench press seems like the true choice of a manly-man, push-ups also do more for your abs, back and glute strength than the traditional bench press.

THE

Push-Up

Guide TURN THE PAGE FOR MORE...

WORKOUT ROUTINE

1. Standard Push-Up Steps: a. Place your hands slightly wider than shoulder width, fingers pointing forward, feet together, and straighten your arms and legs to form a straight line with your body. b. Screw your hands into the ground, squeeze your glutes and brace your core. c. Lower yourself to the ground, keeping your elbows in line with your wrist and forearms as vertical as you can. Do not let your hips or neck sag, keep a straight line from your neck to your toes, and then after a small pause, push yourself back to your starting position. d. Pause at the bottom and push yourself back to the starting plank position, keeping your back flat throughout the movement by pulling your shoulders back.

A 3. TRX Suspension Push-Up (Advanced) Steps: If you can do three sets of 20 push-ups, then you are ready for a push-up variation that will continue to challenge your muscles and increase strength. The free moving TRX Suspension Trainer will create instability and take out the resting portion at the top of the push-up. This way your muscles stay activated throughout the entire exercise. Set up a TRX, rings or other suspension trainer from a sturdy object, about 1218 inches off the ground. Perform push-ups according to the standard push-up guidelines.

A 2. Incline Push-Up (Beginner)

B

B

Steps: Don’t stress if you can’t perform a standard push-up, but there is still no reason to do a kneeling, or “girl,” push-up. Kneeling pushups aren’t for girls, boys, women or men. Kneeling compromises your ability to squeeze your glutes and tighten your core, which is needed in doing a push-up from the floor in a plank position. Instead, perform your push-up off of a wall, stairs, edge of a bed, a bench or a Smith machine. Perform the push-ups at an incline that challenges you, but allows you to bring your chest to the object that you are pushing off on. Once you can perform 1520 reps comfortably at a given angle, keep lowering your angle slightly, building up to 15-20 reps, until you are able to perform your push-ups from the ground.

A

Keep practicing those push-ups, and don’t forget to change it up! 26

DON'T STARVE YOUR WAY TO SKINNY.

I

t’s an addiction to the point of insanity in our culture, one of the most overfed populations in human history — the weight loss diet.

Despite plenty of scientific evidence that diets don’t produce lasting results for most people, and despite countless numbers of dieters, most of them women, thrown into a lifetime of damaging despair, low selfesteem, and self-hatred thanks to failing diets, our culture still blindly adheres to the lowcalorie diet as the panacea for all life’s problems, including those extra pounds. The reality TV show The Biggest Loser provided the perfect highprofile platform for scientists to showcase what millions of Americans have learned the hard way: Diets make you fatter in the long run.

Why dieting makes you fat For most of our species’ history, meager food supply and bouts of famine have been the norm. As a result, the body prioritizes conserving fat and energy through altering its metabolism and fat-storing hormones.

A C T IV E LIF E G UIDE .COM

Metabolism slows dramatically for years

Eating fewer calories to lose weight significantly slows your metabolism and causes you to regain the weight quickly and easily. The body will fight for years to get back to its previous set point. Contestants on The Biggest Loser learned they now burn between 400 and 800 fewer calories six years after their televised weight loss journey. In other words, they have to undereat in order not to continually gain fat. Satiety hormones skewed for years

Diets also skew levels of leptin and other satiety hormones. These hormones control hunger and food cravings. All of the show’s contestants had normal levels of leptin prior to losing weight. After losing weight, their leptin levels plummeted to near nil. A follow-up study showed after they had regained the weight, leptin levels were at about half of original levels. Other satiety hormones were also out of range. This caused contestants increased hunger and cravings. Televised torture for weight loss The weight loss program that The Biggest Loser contestants were put on not only ultimately

damaged their metabolisms, but it was also unrealistic, tortuous and exhausting. Contestants ate too few calories and exercised many hours a day, needing to quit their jobs to meet the weight loss demands. Maintaining the weight loss required exercising two to three hours a day and continued undereating. They were also left with mounds of loose skin.

trigger the mechanisms that cause cravings and weight gain. On the other hand, consuming ample vegetables can alter the composition of gut bacteria in a way that fosters weight loss. Eliminating foods that are inflammatory, such as gluten in the case of gluten-sensitive people, can reduce stress on the body, thus facilitating fat burning.

And lastly, ditching the selfloathing and shame that accompanies diets can also reduce fat-promoting stress.

to lose weight

Fortunately, sustainable weight loss is possible for many people who understand functional medicine approaches to metabolism, satiety hormones and the effects of stress and inflammation on weight. Unfortunately, those who have lost and gained weight repeatedly during their lives will have a bigger battle. It is also important to manage underlying causes of weight gain, such as emotional and addiction issues, PTSD and chronic stress. For instance, one study showed many overweight women have been sexually abused as children. Although portion control and regular physical activity are important, so too are managing the types of foods you eat. For instance, processed carbohydrates and sweets

MODERN HOME OFFICE

Introduced in 1987, the Tolomeo is a classic. My favorite thing about this lamp, other than its cool industrial vibe, is its infinite adjustability. You can place the light at the perfect height, and place the shade to insure there is no "hotspot" glaring in the eyes.

A Sit/Stand desk is definitely the wave of the future in modern office work surfaces. Adjustable height desks allow you to stand, which is much healthier for your back and health. Also, when you are sitting at the desk, you can find the perfect height that allows your arms to rest at the proper height to take all the pressure off of your shoulders.

No matter how many files you have saved digitally, there will always be a need to store some paper files. This one is a stylish file that has room for a printer and two large pencil drawers.

Having a comfortable ergonomic chair is a must while seated for long periods. This one has a comfortable headrest. The armrests lower to seat level so they don't hit the front of the desk. They also are adjustable to find the correct height for your size. The seat moves front and back to allow for different heights. The back also adjusts, along with an adjustable seat height. Brian McIntosh HOUSEWORKS Every office needs a nice piece of art. When taking a break from a busy project, it's nice to have something to gaze upon and contemplate. This one will add a calming effect to any work environment.

How To Ride Around The World On A

Bicycle

M

Imagine riding a bicycle around the world. Do you think you could do it? We consulted the book The Man Who Cycled the World by Mark Beaumont to see what information we could find.

ark is a Scottish cyclist and adventurer who in 2008 set a world record for the route in just under 195 days. Beaumont explains: "An around-theworld cycle can be by any route, but a circumnavigation has certain criteria. To qualify as a circumnavigation you need to pedal over 18,000 miles, start and finish in the same place, always travel in the same direction and pass through antipodal points with an allowance of +2 or -2 degrees. Antipodal points, these are points on the opposite side of the world, are pretty hard to find, but I went through Madrid and Wellington." As for route, that's down to a combination of factors, including how far the cyclist wants to go, what they want to see, and what's possible given ever-changing geopolitical situations on the ground. As a reference, Beaumont's trip took him from the UK to France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Portugal and Spain.

How long will it take? Aside from the obvious factor of distance, the length of the trip comes down to how much time and money are available, and what sort of trip is wanted. Few people will seek to match Beaumont and his record, and some take three years or more doing it. What's the best bike to use? The traditional answer to the “What kind of bike is best?” question is that it should be something tough and simple, ideally with a steel frame of the sort a backwoods mechanic might weld back together if disaster struck. In reality, modern alloy touring frames are pretty bombproof, and bike parts are so standardized that most cities will have a fair selection. Beyond that, it's up to the rider. Beaumont swears by Koga bikes, which he concedes aren't cheap. A fully equipped expedition model can cost more than $3,750. But he says that for anyone riding around the world, a good bike is the one thing worth investing in. He opted for Rohloff hub gears, a pricy system that has the benefit of being fully sealed and, in theory, largely maintenance free. For tires he recommends the Schwalbe Marathon Plus, hugely popular with bike commuters. What else is needed? Again, the short answer is: It depends. For most of the trip, Beaumont packed everything into two modest panniers on the rear of the bike, including a small selection of bike tools. Fast-movers like Beaumont tend to take lightweight tents. His weighed less than a kilo (2.2 pounds). He recommends the completely waterproof rolltop panniers made by Ortlieb. Beaumont has one other packing word of advice: Pack light. “It is amazing how little you need on the road,” he says.
