The Meaning of Beautiful

S

arah Cooper has always been a lover of life. At the age of 18, when many collegeage kids are exploiting their first tastes of freedom under the guise of academic enrichment, Sarah hopped on an opportunity to live in Rome, Italy, after just one semester at Ball State, as nanny to a Hollywood movie director’s 4-year-old son. “The director was making a movie, and I went over with their family,” Sarah recalls. “I got to go behindthe-scenes with the family and the crew, and I got to know the city really well.”And to think that she got this chance from a connection made through a baby-sitting job she’d had back in high school! What Sarah took away from that six-month cultural experience tells a lot about her work ethic to this

day. “I remember noticing how hard people were working, and that was a big introduction to drive and passion,” Sarah says. “I took that home to the remainder of my college experience. I wanted to really listen to what the professors were saying and to find what my niche was.”

Anything But ordinary

In 2004, Sarah left a successful career in advertising to stay at home with and take care of her first-born daughter, Roxy. The arrival of this miraculous girl was anything but ordinary, and Sarah proved herself to be anything but your “typical” stay-at-home mom. Roxy was born with a severe craniofacial abnormality, which nearly cost her her brand new life, and which has required 22 surgeries over the past 12 years. “For the first few years, I spent every single day with her either at the hospital or at home,” Sarah says. “She was in

therapy nine times a week from ages 0 to 3.” Sarah learned a lot through this labor of love— namely, that there are things you can control and things you just can’t. “I looked at her one day and had this epiphany— that my job was just to make her happy every day and give her the best life I could,” she says. “That made handling things so much better.” As all encompassing as her care for Roxy was in those first three years, Sarah found time to build the business infrastructure for what was to become Bobby Cooper Salon. “People have different ways of dealing with stress, and I think I channeled that into something productive,” she tells me. “I started researching how to write a business plan, what good business models were, reaching out to mentors, interviewing them, doing major industry research, and I literally wrote and re-wrote the business plan.” As Vice President of Bobby

Cooper Salon, Sarah follows the plan to this day. And as a result of Sarah’s business efforts, along with the creative vision of founder Bobby Cooper, the salon has yielded accolades in top industry magazines. “We just made a list of the top 200 salons in North America for our salon culture,” Sarah says. “And we were just featured in a big industry mag for our design. That’s my reward. That’s my thing—defining what our culture is.” In the beauty industry, you might say that one of the goals is to define or reinvent what beauty is, as far as hair and make-up aesthetics are concerned. But in life, as Sarah well knows, beautiful doesn’t have to be perfect. “With my daughter, this is a matter of dealing with something less than what some people say is perfect, but she’s absolutely beautiful, she’s stunning,” Sarah says. “What I believe we do at Bobby Cooper Salon is

When Sarah spent six months in Rome at age 18, she surely couldn't imagine what her future would hold. She never would have believed that she'd be Vice President of a thriving, industry-recognized beauty salon. Nor would she have believed that she could ever feel a love as strong as she feels for her two beautiful daughters.

This month, we bring you the very personal and heartening story of Sarah Cooper, her business—and her family.

to embrace people’s natural beauty and help them to feel beautiful.”

A Love Like No Other Sarah feels a well-justified pride in the success of Bobby Cooper Salon. But her love for the business doesn’t hold a candle to the love she harbors for her two daughters. “Maybe it’s because of my history with my oldest, but I’ve just never felt love like that before,” Sarah says. “Sometimes I remember back to how scared I was at the beginning, and I look at Roxy now—she’s 5-feet tall, she’s beautiful, we’re beyond close— and I think wow. If I could have just relaxed a bit. She’s just a bright light—she draws people in.” On the other side of the spectrum, Sarah thinks back to the day her daughter Isla, now 6, came into the world. “I would say the day she was born was the happiest day of my life,” Sarah says. “I think it’s because I appreciated so much more than someone else might that she was a healthy bouncing baby, and I remember just holding her and crying.” To this day, a shot of that joy-laden, tear-filled moment remains one of Sarah’s favorite pictures. “Of course, I look terrible because I’ve been crying,” she says. “But it’s these things that really define me.” With Isla now in kindergarten, Sarah says that the uncommon experience she’s had growing up with an older sister with special needs has turned her into an especially sensitive child. “I feel my youngest has a different perspective on life than maybe other kids her age,” she says. “There’s a little boy in her class, and like Roxy, he has some craniofacial issues that impair his speech as well. I told her at the beginning of the year to take him under her wing, and support him and make sure he feels comfort at school as a friend. And if other people can’t understand him, she just chimes right in with ‘He said...’ She has an ear for it.”

I asked Sarah her thoughts on balancing the responsibilities that come with being a mother and a businesswoman. “The older I get, the more I feel like the word balance should really be changed to integration,” she tells me. “I’m very passionate about every single thing I do,

High-Flying, Adored Sarah puts an emphasis on health and fitness for her and her daughters, and she seeks opportunities to be active together. “We’re always on the move,” she says. “We have pillow and tickle fights,

sporadic kitchen dance parties, cartwheel-perfecting sessions and handstands everywhere that can handle it. The last day that school was out, the three of us went to Sky Zone and jumped on the trampolines, ‘perfecting’ our toe touches and flips into the Foam Zone.” On

her own, Sarah loves to run and takes a variety of group fitness classes. “I get inspired by the people around me and the music. It makes me feel good, have a clear mind, and be ready to take on whatever the world has to offer me that day.” This year’s spring break brought the family an opportunity to be active together—and to grow even closer. “We went for long walks, swam in the ocean and had the most amazing adventures with baby monkeys and tiger cubs,” Sarah says. But it was an off-the-ground adventure that really made this time together special. “We saw a parasailer, and Isla wanted to know what it was. I told her and asked if she’d like to do that and thought for sure she’d say no, but she was like, ‘Yeah!’” But to involve her daughter Roxy in this would require her to push some boundaries. “To give Roxy the best life I can, I want to push the boundaries a little in a responsible and safe way,” Sarah says. The family had to take a boat out to the launch, and this was frightening for her 12-year-old. “Roxy has a trach, and you can’t get water down there,” she says. “But she’s determined—she taught herself how to swim last summer!” Sarah reassured her daughter, letting her know that if by some slim chance she were to fall in the water, Roxy could trust her mother to get her. “She was very hesitant, but when she finally got out to the boat, she thanked me: ‘Thank you so much for making me come out here. I love you so much, I trust you, I’m so glad to be here.’ Then here I am parasailing with my youngest, and I’m holding her hand because I wanted to hold her hand, and she’s just having the time of her life. It was a really good moment as a mother—I’m looking down on my daughter who’s as happy as a clam watching, proud of herself because she overcame a little fear. And then I’m looking at my wild child up there. And that’s when I remembered again life is about your journey and all of the adventures in between.”

Just Say No to "D.I.E."

I

recently had the opportunity in Seattle, WA, to sit in on a lecture given by Nardia Norman, BPhEd, Dip Mt, and Health Coach. The lecture, titled “Cracking the Female Fat Loss Code,” gave me a new outlook on the complexity of hormones on weight loss in women.

So what is D.I.E.? The acronym stands for “Decreased Calorie Intake with Increased Expenditure”—or simply put, eating less and exercising more. Most of us are familiar with the calorie-in / calorie-out model. While a calorie deficit is needed to lose weight, there must be a hormonal balance for effective fat loss, especially among women. No matter how much time you put into working out, Norman makes a point: “You can’t out exercise poor nutrition or hormonal imbalance.” Even so, the majority of women continue to diet by restricting their calories while increasing their steady state cardio. This can actually lead to hormonal imbalances that can make fat loss harder to obtain. As women, we already experience hormonal fluctuations during our cycle. Your cycle directly affects your ability to lose fat and change your body shape. Don’t throw in the towel. There is a way to obtain your goals with hormonal balance, reasonable calorie deficit, proper exercise intensities and consistency. According to Nardia Norman, we need to improve on five areas of nutrition and lifestyle and then start training smarter by working with our cycle rather than against it. 1. Improve Your Gut Health *Choose whole plant-based, nutrient-dense foods.

22

*Stop fasting or skipping meals, as this interferes with thyroid function for women. 2. Regulate Blood Sugar Levels

*Include protein and fats at each meal. *Increase fiber intake by adding legumes and vegetables. *Cut out refined processed foods. 3. *Energy remains high. *Incorporate HIIT or higher reps and less loads. *Coordination and balance can decrease. *Core temp increases, so be aware of heat. *Cravings for sugar, salt and fat will increase, and this is when body tends to store more fat. (Monitor carbohydrate intake: Plate portions should

be 3 parts vegetable, 1-2 parts protein, 1 part carbohydrates) After making the above adjustments, ask yourself daily how your energy levels are doing. If they are low, ask yourself if you have been too restrictive with your food intake, over exercising, or not sleeping enough. Also, examine your stress level. Take necessary action and make the appropriate changes. If not, you are only working against yourself and eventually you will hit a wall, end up frustrated and discouraged. You are not a number, and know that there is so much complex beauty in all of us. Accept it, focus on the process of consistency, and feel better. Good luck!

Dumbbell Diagonal Shoulder Raise Hold the dumbbell in your right hand at your left hip with palm facing the body and with a slight bend in the elbow. Without changing the bend in your elbow, raise your arm across your body above your head so that your palm is facing out. Slowly reverse the movement to the start. Perform 12-15 reps and repeat with the left arm.

Arnold Curl to Arnold Press Begin with the arms at your sides, palms facing in towards the body. Without moving the upper arms, bend the elbows and curl your hands towards the shoulders so that your palms are facing your chest. Next, exhale and raise dumbbells overhead while rotating the dumbbells so that they face out. Slowly lower them back to your shoulders and then curl the weights back down by your side. Perform 12-15 reps.

Kneeling Close Hands Push-Up On your knees, place your hands slightly closer than shoulder width, with your elbows tucked into your sides. Screw your hands into the ground, squeeze your glutes and brace your core. Lower yourself to the ground so that your chest almost touches. Do not let your hips or neck sag, keep a straight line from your neck to your knees. After a small pause, push yourself back to your starting position keeping your elbows tucked in through the entire push. Perform 12-15 reps. Complete the above exercises in order for a total of three sets. Perform 3 to 4 times a week.

f you have an autoimmune disease, chronic inflammation, or signs of brain inflammation (such as brain fog), you may have noticed it can be tough to tame the inflammation. This is because the body can get trapped in vicious cycles that feed the inflammation. Luckily, researchers have pinpointed what perpetuates these cycles and ways to stop them. They include targeting two immune messengers called “nitrous oxide” and “IL-17.” IL-17 and inflammation The immune system triggers inflammation by releasing an immune messenger called IL-17. IL-17 triggers other immune cells to damage body tissue, such as the thyroid gland in the case of autoimmune Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism or joint tissue in rheumatoid arthritis. IL-17 isn’t all bad—in a healthy immune system it prevents infections. But chronic

A C T IV E LIF E G UIDE .COM

Use Nitric Oxide To Tame Inflammation In Body And Brain inflammation or an autoimmune disease create too much IL-17. IL-17 and “bad” nitric oxide IL-17 damages body tissue by activating a compound called “inducible nitric oxide.” Nitric oxide is a gas in the body that activates various processes. Two good forms of nitric oxide tame inflammation: endothelial and neuronal nitric oxide. However, IL-17 triggers the proinflammatory inducible nitric oxide, which damages body tissue. Targeting nitric oxide to tame inflammation

It’s safer, therefore, to go with nutritional compounds that boost the anti-inflammatory endothelial nitric oxide for maximum inflammation fighting effects: • Adenosine • Huperzine A • Vinpocetine • Alpha GPC • Xanthinol niacinate • L-acetyl carnitine Endothelial nitric oxide aids in tissue repair and regeneration, enhances blood flow, dissolves plaques, and dilates blood vessels. Exercise is another excellent way to boost endothelial nitric oxide.

When it comes to taming chronic inflammation, we want to dampen IL-17 and inducible nitric oxide.

These compounds may also boost the activity of neuronal nitric oxide, which enhances the health of the brain and nervous system.

So why not just take the nitric oxide booster arginine? Although arginine may boost the anti-inflammatory endothelial nitric oxide, it also may increase the inflammatory inducible nitric oxide.

Other anti-inflammatory tools Other inflammation busters include vitamin D3, omega 3 fatty acids, and glutathione. Glutathione is vital to dampening inflammation, repairing damaged tissues,

maintaining a healthy gut (which houses most of the immune system), and buffering the body from the many stressors we face these days. Other helpful tools are high doses of emulsified resveratrol and curcumin. Taken together, these two compounds dampen IL-17 and quench inflammation. Of course, eliminating proinflammatory foods with an autoimmune diet (especially gluten), getting enough sleep, and not overstressing yourself are important, too.

Patch, Pill and Ring: A Short Guide to Birth Control

D

r. Michelle Neff is a Board-Certified specialist in obstetrics and gynecology with Obstetrics & Gynecology of Indiana, and is based out of the Carmel location at the St. Vincent Women’s Center. A menstrual period is not much fun, especially if you have cramps akin to being punched in the abdomen or irritability comparable to the Green Hulk. Whether you’re family planning or not, a wide variety of birth control methods are available to aid with everything from cramps to acne to cyst reduction. Generally, different methods have similar outcomes—cycle regulation and preventing a woman’s body from releasing an egg each month. However, costs and time are factors to consider when choosing a given form of birth control. Many just

want menstrual cycle control so they know the exact day it will arrive and when to stock up on Snickers Bars. 1.The Pill. On the market in various forms for decades, this once-daily option is generally a combination of estrogen and progestin. Doctors also recommend it to treat endometriosis and PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder). 2.The Patch. Stuck to the skin like a band-aid, the patch is changed out once a week for three weeks each month. It’s a little more convenient than the pill, with similar effects. 3.The Ring. This is a small ring you insert into your vagina once a month. Doctors advise NuvaRing should not be used if you’re over 35 or are a smoker,

LI FE MAGAZINE | M AY 2 0 1 6

due to concerns about blood clots. 4. Depo Shot. Progestin only and is injected once every three months. It does have a tendency to cause irregular bleeding and expires after two years.

No one form is right for every woman and many different things play into your specific cycle. Your OB/GYN is here to help you make the right choice for you and your family.

5. Nexplanon. A hormone injection inside your arm that lasts three years. It can be removed with a simple outpatient procedure if you decide to have children. 6. IUD. This is a longer-term form of birth control and has 3, 5 and 10-year options. IUDS are very popular among postpartum moms. Also, medical advances have made sure you do not feel it inside your uterus. We do recommend you check for the string in your cervix every month after your period.

Bazbeaux Pizza

Celebrating 30 Years of Pizza Innovation In 1986, a new kind of pizza hit the Indianapolis restaurant scene. One that valued healthier options, like whole wheat crust and fresh, vegetarian options. One that wasn't afraid of strange and kooky pizza toppings like shrimp and Andouille sausage. In 1986, Bazbeaux came onto the scene—and pizza in our city has never been the same.

H

ow many years does it take, and how many loyal customers have to keep coming back time after time before a restaurant comes to be called an institution? This May, Bazbeaux Pizza celebrates 30 years of bringing bold, fresh, zany, creative pizzas to the hungry people of central Indiana. In 1986, Jeff Berman found a restaurant for sale in the Indianapolis Star classifieds for $15,000.00. With the purchase of an old pizza oven, a dough mixer and a few other basic restaurant needs; some cheap outdoor furniture and colorful umbrellas; and a deck that he built himself, Jeff opened the original Bazbeaux location in Broad Ripple, right next to Fire Station #32. “We only sat 24 inside, but the deck out front was a huge hit in the warmer months,” Jeff tells me. The colder months were saved by carryout and delivery. “We struggled to keep up with the business at first,” he says. “We became very popular, so we added an enclosed area out back with a big garage door you could open in the summer, we made the kitchen a little bigger, and we found a core group of excellent crew members, some of whom still work with us.” Just three years later, Bazbeaux opened on Mass Ave in downtown Indianapolis, and in 2005, the Carmel store opened in the Arts & Design District. Now if that kind of success and

a much more adventurous foodie scene,” he says. “But Bazbeaux was sort of a pioneer for the idea that you can think outside the pizza box, so to speak.” He points to customers’ taste for craft beer and more sophisticated wine options as one of the areas that the restaurant works to stay current with. “We’ve added a good selection of craft beers and interesting wines at very reasonable prices.”

he says. “That was our niche, and we borrowed from those places but truly came up with our own unique style. I came up with the sauce and dough recipes after we signed the first lease and had our equipment in place. And being vegetarian at the time, we liked the idea of whole wheat and lots of veggies.” Thirty years later, the focus is still on the quality of the food Bazbeaux Pizza puts out. Much of what’s on their menu is created in-house, from the two kinds of crusts they make each day, to their special sauce blend, to many of their salad dressings, pesto and barbecue sauce. “We roast tomatoes and eggplant in-house, and we hand

slice our ham, turkey and other meats, insuring the highest quality,” Jeff says. Jeff understands that the success of Bazbeaux Pizza couldn’t be possible without the continued support year-in, year-out, of the vibrant cultural districts their three stores call home. “We feel very much a part of these neighborhoods,” he says. “I’m involved with the neighborhood associations and attend many of their meetings. We’ve been pioneers and part of the growth of each area we’re in.” To further their connection with the community, Bazbeaux supports local schools, charities, churches and other organizations. They also sponsor Heartland Film Festival and Indy Eleven, and Jeff is on the board of Dance Kaleidoscope. Thirty years is a long time in popular culture, and tastes change. I asked Jeff how Bazbeaux has kept up with the times. “Indy has developed

If you’ve been in the area for any length of time, chances are that Bazbeaux’s playful court jester has served you up a slice or two of his pizza. Maybe you enjoy the Pizza alla Quattro Formaggio, or perhaps you gravitate toward the Mediterranean. Maybe your tastes veer more towards the Garden, with its artichoke hearts, avocados, spinach, green pepper, red onion, black olive and ricotta. But if you have not yet experienced the deliciousness of Bazbeaux, get thee to one of their three locations ASAP! “We have innovative creative food in awesome spaces in the most fun, pedestrian and bicycle friendly spots in the city, served up by a friendly, helpful crew,” Jeff says. “If you like a fresh, healthy pizza in an upscale and fun environment, maybe sipping a nice wine or glass of draft beer with a great salad, Bazbeaux is for you.” Congratulations, Bazbeaux Pizza, on 30 spectacular years. Here’s to many, many more!

Just Who Is “Bazbeaux”?

The name certainly is curious. Does it come from some old story of the

French nobility? Could it be the name of a little town somewhere

Louisiana bayou? Jeff clears on the

it up once and for all:

“We made it

up—it just sounded good!”

The spelling

was inspired by

Jeff’s time in college down in

New Orleans, and the jester idea came from a friend of his who he used to bartend for.

“He was the

exhibit designer for the state museum, and we thought that the jester personified what we were trying to do: entertain and please people with food and drinks in a whimsical, fun place.”

Fire Pits

Let a fire pit evoke sweet memories of old—and inspire

T

he hottest craze hitting the backyard this year is adding a fire feature. Not just a source of warmth, a fire pit provides a social gathering space for friends and family. It is a place to start conversations, tell stories and create memories to share. Fire pits come in a nearly endless array of shapes and formats. They can be purchased as all-inclusive kits in pre-built forms or customized to match your backyard vision. The source of heat can be woodburning, propane, natural gas or gel fuel. Each has its own benefits and costs. Pre-assembled units such as the Arhaus Furniture log rectangle fire table allow for immediate use and can be set up on any non-flammable surface. Units like this allow for flexibility in changing your fire feature

location in the future as there is no gas or propane hook up required. This particular unit can support natural wood-burning or the use of gel fuel canisters with lava rock. Another option is to make your fire pit a more permanent part of your hard scape. This allows creative use of different construction materials to tie your fire pit into the overall design aesthetic of your backyard. In this example, installing a flagstone patio with bluestone pavers and stacking river flat rock for the fire pit creates a one-of-a-kind permanent fire feature that ties into the home’s natural gas line. Structures like this require the most planning and typically are higher in cost. Adding an inviting seating

group to entertain around and enjoy your new fire pit is just as critical to a successful fire feature area. Consider how many people you want to entertain and how large your space is before planning out your fire feature. Seating such as the Arhaus Furniture San Juan outdoor curved sectional provides a cozy, conversational space that naturally envelops a round fire pit. Setting up individual seating with chairs that can be easily moved can also add flexibility to your grouping so you can add seats when required. However you choose to create your fire feature, adding this element to your backyard will only encourage friends and family to get outside, warm up and tune in to great conversation!

Charleston

Centuries-old mansions, Spanish moss-draped trees, spooky cemeteries, cobblestone walks: in a word, Charleston. As you walk the gas lamp-lit streets at night, past horse-drawn carriages and the antebellum architecture, you just might think you’ve traveled back in time. But just because this South Carolina city is proud to celebrate its heritage doesn’t mean it’s stuck in the past. Charleston boasts innovative restaurants, interesting shops, contemporary art galleries and the world-class Spoleto Festival USA. This is the place to experience the genteel South. After all, it was the home of the oh-so-suave Rhett Butler from Gone with the Wind.

Austin knows how to have a good time. Sixth Street is constantly grooving to the sweet melodies of undiscovered musicians, which means you’ll hear fresh tunes all night long. During the day, you can spend time relaxing in Zilker Park and savoring some finger-lickin’ good barbecue.

Dazzling red rocks are sure to impress even the most jaded traveler. Adventurous visitors savor the 100-plus hiking trails that grant spectacular views. Less active travelers can take in the vistas from the Chapel of the Holy Cross or go art shopping at Tlaquepaque.
