When he emerged from his work, Chris explained that the bikes were part of a cross-marketing campaign Alchemy engages in with Ducati Indianapolis in Zionsville. “You have to try to catch a guy’s eye walking by,” he says. “The woman sees the store and says, ‘Ooh! Jewelry!’ and the guy’s not sure at first—then he sees the bikes and says, ‘Well, sure, why not.’” The art, I learned, was by a Carmel-based artist named Ellie Kort. “Ellie wanted to make some more room in her studio and I really like her art, so she brought some pieces down here,” Chris explains. about building community—and helping other small business owners to succeed.
A PATH LESS TRAVELLED
Chris, who owns Alchemy and is the store’s sole jeweler, couldn’t have foreseen growing up that he’d own a jewelry store. To this day, the self-described “one-man show” doesn’t call himself “a designer,” even though he’s been in the business for 16 years and personally designs and crafts every ring the store produces. “I don’t think I’ll ever be worthy enough of saying I’m a designer,” Chris says. “I’m pretty sure I failed art class, you know what I mean? I’m a late bloomer in this whole thing.” Creativity, however, has always been part and parcel of Chris’s being, and long before it emerged in the jewelry he designs today, it took shape in the bikes he rode growing up. “When I’d buy a bike, it would need to be changed immediately to make it my own,” he says. “I’d rip it apart in my mind, moving this, adjusting that, changing the color.” He went so far as to repaint his tennis shoes more to his liking when he was in high school. “I was very meticulous—taping off everything that didn’t need to be painted,” he tells me. Even with this obvious bent toward creation, Chris explains that it was out of necessity that he began designing his own work, when the work he was outsourcing simply didn’t meet his standards. Perhaps the greatest evidence of Chris’s natural creative ability is the fact that he has no formal training in the business and art of jewelry. Admitting that he was never a stellar student, it only took three semesters of college for Chris to realize academia, per se, wasn’t for him. His entrée to the world of jewelry came, oddly enough, in his work as a pharmacy technician and pharmacy reverse distributor. “I knew a lady and her husband was in the jewelry industry,” he tells me. “She knew I was calling on all these hospitals, but she kept telling me I needed to go work for her husband—the jewelry industry is always looking for sales people.” He

pon walking into Alchemy Supply Co. on Broad Ripple Avenue, it wasn’t at first the 24K gold or glistening diamond engagement rings that caught my eye. Propped up near the walls on either side of the store were two sparkling gems of another kind—Ducati motorcycles. Abstract art in the vein of Jackson Pollock lined much of the remainder of the walls, and a rack of branded t-shirts for sale, was positioned against the wall just to the left of the main display counter. I observed Chris Harrison hard at work on an etching project at his desk towards the back of the store—so I couldn’t immediately satisfy my curiosity regarding the motorcycles and the paintings and the t-shirts. “I’ll be with you in a second, I just have to finish up something real quick,” Chris says. Of course, I took advantage of my wait to make closer inspection of the display cases, and I concluded that, yes, indeed, this was a jewelry store, and a fine one at that.
Cover Story
Chris’s first years in the business were spent in database management and online marketing, skills that he was comfortable with. When business was slow, though, his curiosity led him to learn. “I would stand over the jeweler’s shoulder and watch what he was doing,” he says, “and I got to thinking there had to be a better way to do what he was doing, a better tool to use, a different technique.” After a few years of trying his own hand at jewelry design, growing his private clientele, and learning all he could from this jeweler, Chris took his leave. “I had mentally outgrown the company and just felt like I couldn’t learn any more there,” he says. After taking some time for soul searching, Chris started working for a loose diamond distributor, which took him on the road to Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee. A year prior to this Chris married his wife, Meghan, and as things grew more serious in his personal life, the travelling needed to come to an end. “Meghan and I started to think about having kids, and travelling so much, with a growing territory looming just wasn’t where I wanted to be starting a family, and so when I saw an opportunity to get settled and start my own business, I moved on it,” Chris tells me. “I had a decent client base from the rings I’d designed and sold on my own, so the time was right.” Two days after his eldest son was born, Chris started construction on his first shop, Harrison Co. Jewelers, in Carmel’s Arts and Design District.

URBAN INSPIRATION
Alchemy Supply Co. celebrated its grand opening in Broad Ripple in December 2016 with a successful gathering of 120 clients and friends. The date was December 16, and Chris will remember it always— not just because of the grand opening, or because of the shipment of goods that didn’t arrive that day as scheduled, but because, as some readers may recall, that Friday night saw Indianapolis’s most crippling ice storm in recent memory. “We didn’t know what the weather was—we were just celebrating,” Chris remembers. “We ended up at Kilroy’s to continue the celebration, and when we left a little after midnight, conditions had gone downhill. Meghan and I spent 10 hours on I-465 before we made it back home.” (Bonus bucks for the babysitter, at least, right?) Nevertheless, Alchemy was off to a rip-roaring start. I still wondered, though—why the move to Indianapolis? “I grew up a lot in Broad Ripple,” Chris tells me. “My first apartment was here, and I met my wife at a restaurant right on the canal. I feel very connected to this neighborhood.” One might even say there’s something about Chris’s persona— something in his heart and soul—that drew him to the most-often lively, occasionally gritty, but always

goes on, saying, “I didn’t know anything about jewelry, and didn’t really want to at first. But one thing led to another, the company gave me a much appreciated opportunity, and I ended up working with him, on an interim basis until I figured out what I really wanted to do—and that was 16 years ago.”
esign to Chris isn’t so much art, as it is a math exercise, a matter of proportion and feasibility, knowing the limitations of stones, knowing the tolerance of certain metals, he explains. While we conducted our interview over beers a few doors down from his store, Chris was for much of the time doodling, whether consciously or unconsciously, on a napkin, designing even as we talked.
pulsing Broad Ripple Cultural District. “I’m very much inspired by the urban atmosphere,” he says. “Give me rough textures and obscure architecture to inspire my creativity—there’s plenty of that here.” And Chris has wasted no time in weaving Alchemy into the community, already involving his store with the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) and attending weekly meetings that support local business owners. “I’m all about community and working together with other small business—we all want to succeed.”
A CTIVE LIF E MAG A ZIN E | A PR IL 2 0 1 7
Chris has a lot to be thankful for—from the handson, ground-up approach he took to becoming a successful jeweler, to the family he and his wife have built, with two young boys he couldn’t be prouder of. “I really am most proud of being a good dad,” he says. Chris created the Alchemy Supply Co. brand in order to be a part of something bigger than himself, and with a fresh, new business and a supportive family by his side, Chris has that goal well within his sights.

Sofa Deconstructed The
H
ave you ever wondered why one sofa may cost $1,000 or more than another, even when it appears to look the same? Well, this is definitely a case of “don’t judge a book by its cover”! Sofa construction can vary dramatically when comparing models. A betterquality construction can lead to a longer lifetime of the piece, maintain a better overall appearance, and greatly enhance how it will feel. There are many factors to consider when comparing construction quality. Here are three key questions to ask:
What is the frame constructed of? The most traditional select frame construction is a 1 1/4” solid kiln dried hardwood frame. A high-grade alternative is the use of cross directional hardwood laminate that should be at least a 7-ply or layer construction. Frames made of plywood or lower quality wood with less width are a lesser quality. The frame should be corner blocked, which means a triangular block of wood is adhered in each corner to provide stability. This helps prevent warping and joint movement. All joints should also be glued and the use of dowels will again create a solid frame structure. Less expensive frames will simply utilize staples to adhere joints. This will lead to frame failure with greater frequency.
What is the structure of the seat deck? The highest quality seat construction is called an 8-way hand-tie system. Hourglassshaped coils made of 8- to 10-gauge metal are tied together 8 ways, each by hand. This creates an even distribution of weight and wear across the entire piece. If a sinuous spring system is used, then utilizing a heavier gauge metal of at least 11 will provide better support. Also,
the number of springs per seat is indicative of quality. Look for seats with 5 springs per seat or 15-20 springs per sofa.
What is the construction of the seat cushion? When considering a sofa, don’t be afraid to open the seat cushions of the floor model! Cushion cores should be wrapped in a muslin ticking bag, meaning when you open the cushion you should not see the inner contents. This extra bag of containment helps the cushion maintain it shape longer. Another key factor is the weight of foam that is used. A higher weight adds to the longevity of the cushion core. Industry standard is 1.5 lbs., but a higher quality weight would be 1.8 lbs. Typically an outer down blend wrap is placed around the foam core to add a level of comfort. The highest grade of cushion core will have what is called a Marshall unit inside the cushion core. This is like a mini-spring mattress of coils inside the seat cushion that adds a lofty feel and the longest life span to the cushion. When comparing sofas and price ranges, it is the inside that counts! Take the time to do the research and purchase the highest quality construction that your budget allows.

Adventures in America’s National Parks
going down either the South Kaibab or Bright Angels Trails to the bottom, and up the North Kaibab Trail to the North Rim. Rob Krar, one of the best ultra-runners out there, finished the run in a blazing 6:21:47 in 2012 and has the FKT.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park (North Carolina)
This run stays on the famed Appalachian Trail for 72 miles, spanning from the southwest corner of Great Smoky Mountains National Park to the northeast corner of the park (Tennessee). The run has been done many times, but the FKT was done by David Worth in 2011. The ultra-runner completed the distance in 14:50:22, going south to north.
Check out our selection of these well-known
challenges that runners take on in our national parks. Zion National Park in Utah
The 48-mile trek with 10,000 feet of elevation gain connects several trails in the park and is often done both east-to-west or west-to-east. The scenery of
canyons, cliffs, flowers, trees and more make this route a must-do for ultra-runners. The FKT, according to the Fastest Known Time community, is 7:22:08, done by Mike Foote and Justin Yates going east to west in 2013.
Teton Range of Wyoming at Grand Teton National Park
Going about 33 miles with 8,100 feet of elevation gain, the scenery is unmatched. If you run it counter-clockwise, the west slopes of the Tetons suddenly reveal themselves at Hurricane Pass, and it is something you’ll never forget. The FKT belongs to Evan Honeyfield, who ran it in 5:34:31.
Joshua Tree National Park
One of the newer national park adventures out there, this route explores the desert park in Southern California along the 37.3-mile California Riding and Hiking Trail. Runners get to run in remote desert wilderness, alongside rock formations and through the famed Joshua tree forests that are found only in America’s southwest.
Grand Canyon North Rim
Easily the most well-known running adventure in the national parks, this challenge typically entails starting on top of the South Rim, going down into the canyon, climbing up to the top of the North Rim, then going back to where you started. It’s about 42 miles round-trip,
