Hair Styling Trends for the Beauty and Cosmetic
By Amy Conville, Owner/Stylist, Method Salon
New Year The New Year is an exciting time for change, renewal and fresh starts. Changing your hair, even subtly, is one easy way to start your New Year fresh. Whether it is something small, or dramatic enough to stop your neighbor in his tracks, embrace the idea of change. You’ll be glad you did.
and colors we are seeing are exciting and, most importantly, WEARABLE for the real woman.
in to a tight side knot or a sleek pony and you are ready for an evening out.
Here are three trends you can expect to see in 2016. 1.Tousled waves and natural texture. Think more “bend” than “curl.” Oribe’s Dry
to your regime (we love Pillow Proof by Redken), and you may have just found yourself three fashionable hair days from one blow-dry style! 2. Strawberry blondes, blurred lines, icy cool color. Strawberry blondes will be undeniably huge in 2016. Think Emma Stone in her signature soft copper penny. Extended, purposeful new growth complimented by shades of amber, deep dark chocolates and rich copper accents will be melted together for rich striking brunettes. True platinum, cooltoned blondes will continue to be worshiped and wished for.
At Method Salon, we love perusing the photos of hair trends gracing fashion runways, looking for inspiration as to what will be new and desired come spring. As expected, this fall’s fashion weeks did not disappoint. The styles

Texturizing Spray is a MUST for all our winter waves. Pair it with Oribe’s Impermeable AntiHumidity Spray and be ready to pinch yourself… especially when your hair still looks perfect the next day. On day three, try a low-nape pony tale or a side knot. Add a little dry shampoo

“Blondeing is an art and should be treated as such. If you can create healthy, multi-tonal blondes, you have mastered a big part of being a true colorist. I love how complex blondeing can be. To the naked eye, you may not see the difference, you just know that the hair looks beautiful, or that it doesn’t. To the expert colorist, you see the artwork and creative talent that went in to making a gorgeous blonde happen. Any stylist can color hair blonde. Only a true artist can create a bombshell.” Amy Conville, owner of Method Salon. 3. Sleek, straight and blunt. Keeping hair blunt, straight and close to the head will be on-trend for 2016. Add in a deep side-part and some finishing pomade and you will have mastered the look. Twist
“The true trick to a woman loving her hair is for her to know HOW to love her hair. There are so many products, so many appliances, so many options… it’s hard to know which is right. We strongly recommend booking a Style Lab at Method Salon. A Style Lab is a private session—or with friends for a fun girls’ night out—where our stylists meet with clients privately and truly TEACH them to work with their own unique hair. We teach them how to use their products and how to properly style their hair. It’s a great experience and one we feel is just as important as their cut or color appointment.” - Christine Utzinger, Director of Salon Operations, Method Salon. Winter Essentials Aren’t you thankful for the major comeback of sweaters? For years we loathed our thick sweaters for the sake of the layering trend, and we either gave them away or stored them in a dark, cold area of our closets. Well, I hope you saved a couple—because they’re back, baby! The sweater knits are back in the shape of long cardigans, major fringe or no-fringe capes, turtle neck dresses, long-sleeved thin cropped, or sleeveless and super long. They’re not as versatile as layers, but they do make a statement—and whatever option you go with, you’re sure to be warm and cozy. Now, be careful about wearing a thick one to a dinner party or to work as they can feel heavy and you don’t want to break out in a sweat. (Been there, done that!) Always layer a cotton shirt underneath in case you need to take the top layer off (especially around the holidays). Some other winter essentials include the basics such as warm gloves and hats. Fur pom poms are super in for the season, and so are thick cable knits. It’s almost a “go big or go home” thing: The bigger the pom pom and the bigger the yarn, the better! Pastel colors are the season’s must-have palette. Infinity scarves are great for casual looks, and silky long ones that hang on the body are great options for a dressier look. When it comes to winter

boots, I’m a Sorel girl. When I lived in Colorado I discovered the beauty of Sorels—and talk about warm and cute. I like boots that are rubber on the outside and warm inside for those snowy days, or just to run errands and take you places. Shearling or faux fur can keep your feet warm with a casual style—indoors or out. The over-theknee boot trend is another one to cherish. Hot, hot, hot style—and keeps you warm, too. Definitely a win-win situation! Over-the-knee is great for dress-up occasions. Keep it low key with flats, or make a statement with heels! As I send you all my wishes for happy holidays, a blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year, I also must say goodbye from the column. It’s a bittersweet feeling, as I need more time to spend with my kiddos and to focus on my personal projects. I want to say thank you so much to all of you who have reached out to me through the magazine and those who simply have taken the time to read what I write! I want to let you all know I’ve had an amazing time! Cheers,

My World Ben Diallo, J.Benzal Designs By Matthew Hume

P
Put quite simply, Ben Diallo loves life. As owner of and designer at J.Benzal, that love of life makes an appearance in every piece that carries the brand. “For me, color expresses the joy of life,” Ben says. “I like to infuse color because it shows you’re not afraid to live.” Everything about Ben—from his happy childhood growing up in Togo, West Africa, to his wife and two daughters, to the perfect marriage of business skill and creative abilities he has found in J.Benzal—suggests that this is a man not at all afraid of pursuing the good in life. Ben has traveled far from his roots in West Africa, but he attributes his appreciation of style to those early childhood days. He remembers that as a youngster, those in his community didn’t always have that much in regards to material wealth, but that everyone took sincere pride in the way they presented themselves. Fashion, of course, was a considerable part of that. “My uncle was one of my earliest influences because he loved fashion,” Ben tells me. “He taught me an early appreciation for suiting and the power of a great tailor.” A self-described jokester in his early years of school, Ben says he did well in his studies, although he does remember how his teachers wished the young man were “more compliant” with their direction. Studying textiles and international business during his university years in Morocco, Ben came to Butler University to further pursue his studies, deciding to focus his academic energies completely on business. Life, however, had different plans. Once he had completed his studies at Butler, Ben and his wife, whom he’d met while a student there, moved to New York to start their life together. “I started a translation and interpretation company called Jalla International Services,” Ben tells me. “My office was in the garment district, so fashion and beautiful fabrics surrounded me. It was a constant reminder of my passion for textiles and design.” It was in
that environment that Ben first hatched the plan to open a men’s fashion boutique. As time marched on, he just couldn’t shake the desire to create fashion that he wanted to wear—and that, as he and the Indianapolis community now know, others want to wear, too. Shortly after the birth of their first daughter, the couple moved back to Indianapolis to raise their children closer to his wife’s family, and in 2008, the first J.Benzal boutique opened downtown on Mass Ave. It soon become apparent to him that there had been a substantial void in fashion for the men of Indianapolis. “My wife thought I was crazy to open the store when I did,” he laughs. “But even though I started J.Benzal at the height of the recession, I really believed in the vision of bringing high-quality menswear to the ‘every man’ in Indy,” Ben says. “We were blessed to have some early success, and our clients were excited to find us and see that they could get really high-quality menswear that didn’t break the bank.” Fast forward a few years, and the brand’s success speaks for itself— in 2013, J.Benzal opened their second boutique in Carmel’s City Center. A World of Inspiration I asked Ben where his design inspiration comes from. “Usually from traveling,” he tells me. “I really enjoy seeing how fashion is impacted by culture and place.” New York, Miami, Paris and Milan are the usual suspects for watching current trends from around the world, and Ben derives a great deal of inspiration from those bastions of style. The Midwest isn’t Paris, though, and he recognizes that. “The Midwest is a little more conservative than some of the places that inspire me, but I find that my clients appreciate the subtleties I like to bring to pieces to make them more unique,” he says. And perhaps there’s still a little bit of that schoolboy jokester in Ben’s design work. “We start with a classic design and add details—a pop of color behind the collar of a suit jacket, or added piping to the diagonal side pocket of our classic chinos,” he says. “I like to think that even our more classic pieces encourage living a bit outside the lines.” Down the road, the company plans to open boutiques in major cities around the country, including San Francisco and Miami. When that time
comes, Ben says that J.Benzal designs will reflect the surrounding culture—just as they have here in the Midwest. The Softer Side of Life As a small business owner and a husband and father, Ben admits that it’s challenging to balance his days with work and family. “I always tell people who want to start a business that you will work harder for yourself than you ever did for anyone else,” he says. He’s grateful to his wife for helping him to focus on what matters most—and with two growing girls, there’s a lot of whatmatters-most going on right at home. “I don’t want to miss the big moments with my girls, so I’m responsible for homework two days a week—that helps,” Ben says. “They’re learning French, so that’s my domain, since French is my first language.” He also does what he can to schedule appointments in advance with his clients to “create some predictability” in his life. Being closed on Sundays allows the family to be together the whole day. And when it comes to getting away from it all, Ben says nothing beats the beach. “Jamaica and Aruba are a couple of our favorites... It’s a good chance to really unplug.” Ben couldn’t be more proud of his family, and he’s proud to have built a business that allows him to do work that he loves. But he knows he couldn’t be where he is today without community support. “We recognize the need to give back to the community that supports and nourishes us,” Ben says. A partnership with Danny’s Closet of Hope, through St. Vincent Hospital, gives the company a chance to provide gently used suits to men in need. “We also encourage our clients to give back by running a suit drive within J.Benzal,” he says. “Our clients receive a discount on their purchase when they donate a gently used suit, and we, in turn, donate these to local charities who give them to men for interviews.” “Too often people play fashion too safe,” Ben says. But he believes that fashion should be a reflection of his clients’ own personal styles. “I hope people can see from my designs that I enjoy life.” And through his design work at J.Benzal, Ben shares this joy by encouraging the men of Indianapolis to stretch their sense of fashion just a little outside the lines.
“For me, color expresses the joy in life,” Ben says. “There is a lot of color in my line, and I try to infuse pops of color in some of our more classic pieces to encourage living a bit outside the lines. I hope people can see from my designs that I enjoy life.” ACTIVELIFEGUI DE.com

Hello, Shoe...Nice to meet you. I’m Tie. When you step inside either of the J.Benzal locations, you’ll soon find that every single one of the brand’s ties and shoes have a name. “We started by naming the ties in our very first collection,” Ben says. “That first collection was inspired by classic prints reflecting a sort of Midwestern sensibility, and when I was selecting the fabrics, I thought about our prospective customers. So we had ‘The Banker,’ ‘The Professor’ and even ‘The Heartbreaker.’ We’ve continued this tradition in each collection that has followed.” And when J.Benzal launched their shoe collection last spring, Ben gave each shoe a personal touch. “Personal service is a huge part of our brand identity, so I get to know my clients pretty well. When I was designing the shoes, my clients inspired me, and I incorporated elements of their style into the shoe design that bears their name.” Just think—you, too, might someday have a shoe named after you. Who knew?

worst dishes or desserts with a new, healthier one. Don’t worry about what your family or friends think. More than likely they feel the same way but don’t have the courage to speak up or initiate a change. Also, there may be at least one or two family members who have health issues that could benefit from a healthier selection. You’ll set a new trend, and everyone will feel better and be thankful for it. Go to activelifeguide.com to check out three of my favorite whole-food holiday recipes!
T
he holiday season is a time of joy and celebration spent with family, friends and a lot of food! I know that most people will use the excuse that it’s just one day. But is it really just one day? Think about the number of special events and gatherings that you attend during the holiday season—some with coworkers and church, some with friends and others with extended family. Not only that, but most of us are in denial of our own daily diets.
Then the holidays just pile on due to all the fun temptations that surround us. It’s never too soon to begin a new daily food plan and holiday menu. Don’t wait for the New Year! It’s not too complicated. Just remember that it’s not about a quick fix drink, shake or supplement. Your success truly boils down to your willingness to choose whole foods. Let me repeat that, a willingness to choose whole foods. If you can come as close as you
can to a 100% whole foods diet, eliminating processed foods with added sugars and high fructose corn syrup, and consuming caffeine and alcohol in moderation, you will find yourself lighter, healthier and happier. As I have said before, it does take planning and preparation, but you can do it if you challenge yourself, as there has to be a willingness in order to succeed. This holiday season I challenge you to substitute three of your

New Treatment Options
For Mitral Valve Disease
Center, and managing partner at Indiana Heart Physicians, a practice with Franciscan Physician Network, Dr. Shaikh specializes in the treatment of acquired and adult congenital heart disease through the use of catheter-based procedures. “This catheter-based approach may offer an improved option and quality of life for patients with significant, symptomatic, degenerative mitral regurgitation who cannot have mitral valve surgery because of the high risk of complications,” says Dr. Shaikh.
The world’s first catheter-based therapy to treat mitral valve disease is now available at Franciscan St. Francis Health Heart Center
C
ardiologists and surgeons at Franciscan St. Francis Heart Center are among the first in the United States to offer patients suffering from mitral regurgitation a new minimally invasive breakthrough treatment option. Mitral regurgitation is the most common type of heart valve insufficiency, affecting nearly one in ten people aged 75 years and older—approximately four million people in the United States alone. The
condition, which is progressive and life threatening, occurs when the leaflets of the mitral valve do not close completely, causing blood to flow backwards and leak into the left atrium of the heart. To maintain an adequate forward flow of blood throughout the body, the heart compensates by increasing the size of the left ventricle, the main pumping chamber of the heart. This requires the heart to work harder, and may raise the risk of irregular heartbeats, stroke and heart failure, which can be deadly. Signs and symptoms of mitral regurgitation depend on its severity and how quickly the condition develops and may include: • Heart murmur • Shortness of breath • Fatigue • Lightheadedness • Cough, especially at night or

when lying down • Heart palpitations—sensations of a rapid, fluttering heartbeat • Swollen feet or ankles Treatment Options Currently, there are no medications available to correct mitral regurgitation. For many years, treatment for mitral regurgitation has been limited to open-heart surgery where surgeons repair or replace the faulty valve. Now, MitraClip® therapy repairs the mitral valve without the need for an invasive surgical procedure for certain qualifying high-risk patients. “Open-heart mitral valve surgery is the standard of care treatment, but many patients are at prohibitive risk for an open heart surgery. Medications for the condition are limited to symptom management and do not stop the progression of the disease,” says Saeed Shaikh, MD. In his roles as an interventional cardiologist at Franciscan St. Francis Heart
The device is delivered to the heart through the femoral vein, a blood vessel in the leg. Once implanted by clipping together a portion of the leaflets of the mitral valve, the heart is able to pump blood more efficiently, thereby relieving symptoms and improving patient quality of life. Patients undergoing MitraClip treatment typically experience short recovery times and short hospital stays, an average of three days. To receive more information about the MitraClip, schedule an appointment or second opinion with the world-renowned Franciscan heart valve team by calling 1-877-78-VALVE.

The Riedel Vinum series Chianti/ Zinfandel glass ($44) is highquality stemware that works very well for both red and white wines and can serve as a water glass, too. For Champagne, Robert Mondavi by Waterford flutes ($50 for two) feel especially nice in the hand.

How many servings are in a bottle of wine? The standard bottle is 750 milliliters, which is about 25 ounces. That translates to five 5-ounce pours, which is considered the correct amount, no matter the size of the glass. How much wine do you need? This is our guide to calculating how much wine you’ll need for a party.

Coping with Red-Wine Stains One foolproof way to get red-wine stains out of carpets and upholstery is Wine Away, a spray made of fruit and vegetable extracts ($9; 888 946-3292 or evergreenlabs. com). If you don’t have Wine Away, blot up as much of the stain as possible with a paper towel or clean cloth, saturate the area with cold water, blot that up, then apply a paste of three parts baking soda to one part water. Let the paste dry, then vacuum it up.

pad. A few suggestions: carry the hut system’s maps; where it says single-track option, take it; and read the log books. When you get to Geyser Pass Hut at the end of day six, start smiling, because you’re at the top of the La Sal Mountains, and a 7,400foot descent, aptly named the Whole Enchilada, awaits. As do the Colorado River, Moab and a Milt’s malted and cheeseburger.

to visit in 2016 in the U.S. West: Montana Since 2001, the nonprofit American Prairie Reserve has been working to restore the northern great plains to the pristine condition Lewis and Clark found them in more than 200 years ago. The resulting reserve, in northeast Montana, is now 305,000 acres. The aim is to reach 3.5 million by 2030, creating a U.S. Serengeti and the largest wildlife park in the lower 48, where herds of elk, mule deer and bison thrive. But don’t wait to go. You can sleep under the stars now at the 11-site Buffalo Camp ($10), four miles north of the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge, and take a DIY mountain-biking safari on old ranch roads, passing grazing bison and scanning the skies for American kestrels, Sprague’s pipits, and Swainson’s hawks.

Tie One On: Portland, Maine The other Portland may have the microbrewery rep, but it distributes its beers to half the country. Many of the best brews in Portland, Maine, can only be quaffed here. Oxbow, a classic American farmhouse brewery, just opened a tasting room downtown where you can try local favorite Space Cowboy, a low-alcohol ale, and full-flavor European-style beers like the Continental. Then head to Novare Res, one of the country’s best beer bars, with 33 rotating taps, including roughly ten Maine brews. Or join Summer Feet Cycling, which offers two-and-a-half-hour tours along the Old Port area, with stops at distilleries and breweries like Rising Tide and Urban Farm Fermenting.

To Get Strong Quads: San Juan Mountains, Colorado Elevation, elevation, elevation. That’s what we recall about the seven-day hut-to-hut mountainbiking trip through the San Juans, from Durango, Colorado, to Moab, Utah. The pain is worth it, with climbs ending at huts with glorious views. Note that these aren’t your gorgeous, timberpegged cabins—they’re twoby-four-and-particle-board huts, hauled up on trailer frames. But you’re not here for raclette and a hot-stone massage; you’re just happy that you don’t have to carry your own food, water, and shelter. The cabins are well stocked, including cold beer and a warm sleeping bag on a soft
Best Beaches: South Carolina The Palmetto State has over 200 miles of coastline and an ample supply of gorgeous beaches, with comfortable water temperatures from May through October. Start in Charleston and head 20 miles north to uninhabited Bulls Island, part of the stunning 66,000-acre Cape Romaine National Wildlife Refuge, for a hiking or kayaking tour with Coastal Expeditions. Farther north lies Pawleys Island and its laid-back beaches, and three miles north of there is our favorite stretch of the state: Litchfield Beach. The northern end is the protected Huntington Beach State Park. You won’t find any putt-putt here, just wideopen white sand for miles.

LET’S BE HONEST. Some come for the shuffleboard tables. Some to meet up with friends on the patio. Still, others enjoy watching the game on one of the 50 big screens. But there are two things that everyone comes for.
