FRESH FACED FOR 2017 TIPS FOR SOFTENING DEEP LINES AND WRINKLES

I

Non-Surgical Eye Rejuvenation

t can be so frustrating to see your eyes looking old and droopy. If you feel you appear tired or angry all the time, you’ve likely hunted high and low for the best eye creams money can buy only to find that they don’t work. You may even have considered a blepharoplasty, or eyelift surgery, but are concerned about the downtime associated with cosmetic surgery. Rest assured, you are not out of options. Here at the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of Indiana, we offer a wide range of non-surgical eye rejuvenation treatment options, the most popular of which are injectable wrinkle relaxers and cosmetic fillers.

Botox for Crow’s Feet Botox, which has been used as a wrinkle relaxing injectable since 2002, received additional FDA approval for crow’s feet in 2013. When injected into the upper face, Botox relaxes the

8

underlying muscles responsible for the formation and deepening of lines and wrinkles. When administered by a boardcertified dermatologic surgeon into the crow’s feet area, the existing lines soften over a few days and results last up to four months. We also recommend including a retinol to improve and help maintain your results.

Restylane for Under-Eye Bags In addition to treating your crow’s feet with Botox, you may also want to take care of those under-eye bags. Let’s face it, all the cucumber slices in the world can only help so much. While under-eye creams containing caffeine can provide a temporary solution to puffiness and dark circles, a more dramatic and long-term solution is Restylane. Restylane is an injectable hyaluronic acid filler that helps smooth the under-eye area, providing non-surgical eye rejuvenation that lasts up to 12 months.

A C TIVE LIFE MAGA ZIN E | FE B R UA RY 2 0 1 7

Are there other options for nonsurgical eye rejuvenation? If you aren’t a good candidate for cosmetic injectables, there are other options for reducing the appearance of aged eyes. Laser treatments, microneedling and some topical skin care products are good alternatives to injectables. While they won’t provide the same results, many patients do see improvement with crow’s feet, puffiness and discoloration around the eyes. The best way to find out which options are right for you is to have a consultation with our board-certified dermatologic surgeon in our dermatology practice located in Carmel, just north of Indianapolis.

Looking for Non-Surgical Eye Rejuvenation in Indianapolis? Are you ready to look younger? Turn to the dermatology and antiaging experts in our Indianapolis dermatology practice. Dr. C. William Hanke of the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of Indiana is

a top dermatologic surgeon in Indiana. He has been recognized as one of the Best Doctors in America as well as America’s Top Docs. In addition to providing general and cosmetic dermatology treatments, Dr. Hanke trains other physicians in proper injection techniques and participated in the clinical trials for Botox prior to its FDA approval as a cosmetic antiaging treatment. Contact us today to set up a consultation with Dr. Hanke at the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of Indiana. We look forward to helping you with your non-surgical eye rejuvenation and other anti-aging and skin care needs. The Laser and Skin Surgery Center of Indiana is a full-service general, surgical and cosmetic dermatology facility offering everything from facials and injectables to skin cancer surgery and liposuction. The Wind

By Matthew Hume

Cassie Perry

I met up with Cassie on a chilly and cloud-covered January day at her underconstruction studio on College Avenue, just south of Broad Ripple Avenue. As we walked past Hop Cat and Louie’s Wine Dive on our way to a popular café to talk, we both commented on how delighted we were to see some sun peeking through the cloudy canopy. I may not have been able to see it yet through the 2x4s and construction dust, but Cassie assured me that when Pure Barre Broad Ripple opened in two weeks, clients would leave the dreary winter weather—and other worldly stressors—at the doorstep. “It’s been fun applying my background in Interiors while designing the studio—I wanted to create an aesthetically pleasing environment that was both cozy yet inspiring,” she says. “I am hoping the genuine warmth and encouragement from the friendly faces of my team, along with myself, will provide our clients not only a great workout, but an all-around body and soul nourishing experience each time they walk through our doors.” With an abundance of pre-sale packages sold, Cassie has every reason to be excited about her next great endeavor.

Dreaming and Creating

Originally from a small town just north of Chicago, Cassie steeped herself in creativity from her earliest days. “We were always a creative, goal-driven family,” she tells me. Her father runs a working farm and is a retired owner of a printing business, and her mother creates bronzes and paintings for harness racing as an equine artist. “We’d head out and get our eggs for breakfast,” she remembers, “and it didn’t matter if I had prom on Saturday night, Sunday we were out mucking stalls.” Living on a farm clearly didn’t stifle anyone’s creativity—if anything, it caused it to flourish. Cassie’s adventures thus far in life have included a run as a Colts cheerleader, founder and owner of Me&3 Designs interior decorating and Haus of Huntress (the accessory spin-off of Me&3), and now owner of Pure Barre Broad Ripple. And just ask Cassie about her entrepreneurial brother from Montana, professional fly-fishing guide and freelance photographer who was in Chile on a shoot at the time. Her other brother works in engineering and construction and is an expert in craftsmanship, from building structures to custom iron work. “I think it all boils down to me being a creator, a dreamer, and a little bit of a wanderer…” she says, “living in the present, but looking for what I can accomplish next.” These days, Cassie is focusing most every ounce of her being on the launch of Pure Barre Broad Ripple, which will join two other metro area locations in Carmel and Fishers, with another two studios opening in downtown Indy and Greenwood. For the uninitiated, Cassie describes the Pure Barre technique as one of strength, grace and empowerment—and Cassie says her studio will reflect that same philosophy.

Cover Story The company’s web page describes the approach as “a total body workout that utilizes the ballet barre to perform small, isometric movements, which burn fat, sculpt muscles and create long, lean physiques.” But what is it about Pure Barre that appeals so much to Cassie that she felt a “nudge from the universe” to become an owner? “In the years following my time cheerleading for the Colts, I hadn’t found a workout that challenged me both physically and mentally that made me want to go back,” she says. “When I found Pure Barre, I felt physically challenged, yes, but there was also the positivity and community feel that you had when you walked in. It was clear to me from the start that the women coming there were gaining so much more than a better body— they were gaining a brighter outlook on life.” Over the four years that Cassie taught at the Carmel and Fishers locations, she witnessed firsthand the difference that Pure Barre made in the lives of her clients. “If you’d asked me five years ago, I would never have seen this on the radar,” she says, “but I have had such a good experience and have met some amazing women—the time is right to use my leadership skills and fitness background to cultivate our franchise and build it and grow. For me, it’s about helping women to view themselves differently from within, and from there they can be that much better a mom, friend, spouse or coworker. It’s building a community of positivity.”

Driven by Challenge

To say that life has always gone according to “plan” for Cassie would be an understatement. Shortly after she became pregnant with her twin daughters, Ellisyn and Gracyn, now 7-years-old, Cassie experienced complications that sent her on strict hospital bed rest for many months in hopes of a healthy outcome. “To go from being a highly active person and mom to a three-yearold boy (Jack, now 10) one morning, and to be told I would be lying on my back by afternoon was incredibly difficult for me,” she admits. “I remember lying there as the nurses put my body into a nearly comatose state to halt the early contractions, feeling the greatest sense of fear and loss of control. It was the first lesson in understanding that it’s not the mundane things we worry about on a day to day basis that actually matter— it’s the moments that you never planned for that strike on a random Tuesday afternoon that ultimately change your universe.” After many prayers and an endless team of talented doctors, Cassie welcomed both girls into the world on December 26 of that year, for what she will always describe as her own Christmas miracle. But over the next 18

A CTIV E LIF E MAGAZINE .COM

months, life continued to throw some curve balls her way, including now managing “3 under 3”—with only one set of arms. Cassie found herself in the situation of being a single mom, but she was determined not to allow that fact to alter the way she envisioned her children’s lives to be. “Was it how I pictured my family to be? Absolutely not. Ideal? Not in the least. Challenging? Every day since,” Cassie says. “However, I think that one of the greatest gifts to come from the unexpected circumstances handed to us is that of selfawareness in the moments you least expect them. Today I take pride in the strength and hard-working example I strive to set for my children—even when it’s tough. I make sure they see someone who never gives up in front of them.” Cassie is adamant that moments of struggle have built the foundation for her to truly appreciate where she has been and the enormity of the success that lies ahead as the doors to Pure Barre Broad Ripple— and surely many others—open. “I am so very excited for what is to come and can’t wait to meet some incredible and inspiring women!”

Strong Home, Strong Community

Of all the roles Cassie plays—single mother, business owner, teacher, interior designer— the most important by far, she says, is being a loving and responsible parent to Jack, now 10, and her twin girls, seven-year-olds Ellisyn and Gracyn. “I think it’s safe to say we are always juggling in life—balls are always in the air,” she says. “Sometimes we learn which ones are most fragile and break when dropped through trial and error—and it’s important to master which ones are the rubber kind that will bounce back.” Cassie strives to find moments each and every day to stop and truly appreciate what her young children’s minds and hands are doing. “My time with my kids has become so much more important in the sense that taking moments throughout a crazy busy week to ensure you are just letting them be “little,” and enjoying that stage they’re in that very moment is something I am always working towards.” Cassie also finds it important to pass down the lesson her parents have passed on to her by instilling good work ethic in each of her three children—and that means earning that allowance. When it comes to Pure Barre Jack and the girls have been given assigned “jobs” to earn their place on the payroll. From sorting retail items to cleaning mirrors, they are learning firsthand what it’s like to be a business owner. “Their pictures will be on the team wall alongside everyone else,” she says. “I view it as family business for sure because they are making a sacrifice, too, and I want them to feel they have a part in all of this.” But in addition to using these

moments as teaching opportunities to be both hard working and responsible—skills she hopes follow them into adulthood— Cassie has visions of the time spent at the business and away from home as a way to also make lasting memories. “We are super silly together, too, and I make sure that they are allowed to be ‘kids’ in an ever-changing grown up world.” In addition to nurturing her own family, Cassie looks forward to supporting her extended family at Pure Barre and giving back to the Broad Ripple community. “For me, part of the reason I wanted to do this is to not only give back to the women coming in every day, but to support the charities and causes they believe in,” Cassie says. As a company, Pure Barre raises money for various charities through “Pure Give,” in which individual franchise owners can donate a portion from classes on a given day to a charity of their choice. “I’m excited to feel the pulse of Broad Ripple, see what people here are concerned about, and use my position as a local business to give to causes important to the community,” she says.

That's the Way They Became...

So what else is on the horizon for this entrepreneurial, self-proclaimed “gypsy spirit”? Perhaps a life a little more full—if that’s possible. The new year started off with a bang for Cassie as she got engaged to her long-time boyfriend Jared on New Year’s Eve. “It’s very new age Brady Bunch,” she laughs. “He has 3 kids—2 boys and a girl— and with my 3—2 girls and a boy—we might just start taking applications for an ‘Alice!’” When asked if she had always imagined another chance at a fairytale ending, Cassie tells me for many years she had planned to go at it alone. But, as her life story suggests, Cassie is not one to shut her heart to love or surprises in life. “One of the greatest gifts I have given myself is allowing my heart to be vulnerable again to the idea that life should be shared and enjoyed—because when you meet someone who challenges you to become the best version of yourself, it’s something time and experience have told me is not to be passed up”. Here’s the story…of a small-town farm girl who has learned to take all that life has to offer—the planned and the unplanned— and shaped her future with pride and selfsacrifice for her children, as well as with an unbridled spirit towards making the most of her talents in whatever she sets out to accomplish. Determined to be “alive” in the present, it is also her vision and goals for the future that Cassie takes pride in—and behind the beauty and strength, she aims to inspire others every step of the way.

f the philosophy behind Pure Barre sounds good to you, but you’re thinking, “I’m not a dancer…” or, “What if I can’t keep up?” or, as in my case, “What if I’m a guy?”— let Cassie put your mind at ease. “It’s not an easy hour, but you’ll pick it up!” she says. “It’s low impact, and I’ve worked with women in their early 20s up to their late 70s. And it’s open to men, too. We have ‘Bring on the Men’ nights and date nights. It’s interesting when men take it and say, ‘This is so hard,’ because it’s a different muscle group. You do not have to be strong to come in. It’s OK to allow yourself to be a beginner! We’re going to foster your growth.”

Three Ways to Make the Placebo Effect Work for You

T

The placebo effect. It’s real, and it can help you lead a healthier—maybe even happier—life.

he placebo effect is a target of ridicule, but studies show it has become increasingly effective in recent years, particularly in the United States, where drugs for pain, depression and anxiety sometimes barely outmatch placebos. Fortunately, researchers have decided to study how and why the placebo effect works. By embracing the mystery of the placebo effect, you can harness its powers to enhance your health protocol or better cope with your ailment.

24

By Clifford W. Fetters, M.D.

Give some time each day to think positive thoughts about your health journey and what it involves. Keep a daily or weekly gratitude journal and make sure to note your progress. These tips really do help your health! Remember,

it’s the placebo

effect and not superstition.

What is the placebo effect? Researchers give one group of subjects a new drug or procedure and a different group a sham, then compare the results. Neither group knows which treatment they received. In some studies, the placebo treatment works as well or even better than the real treatment. Here are three ways to use the placebo effect to your advantage. 1: Use

belief

placebo effect.

to

enhance

A person’s beliefs and expectations play a profound role in how their body will respond to something. When subjects are told that their pain will drop before receiving a placebo, it does. Likewise, when they are told they will experience more pain, they do, even though pain delivery was not increased. Scans during these experiments show brain activity corresponds with the expected outcome, even though neither pain relief nor increased pain was delivered. Scientists have also learned that positive expectations release endorphins and dopamine, the “reward” brain chemical. Endorphins dampen inflammation, and both endorphins and dopamine help relieve pain. Spend some time every day reaffirming why you’re on your health journey and

A CTIVE LIF E MAG A ZIN E | FE B R UA RY 2 0 1 7

what you expect to gain from it. Visualize feeling and functioning better. 2: Receive care and attention to enhance placebo. Increased attention, concern and care are also believed to be why the placebo effect has become much stronger in recent years. When people take part in these studies, they receive an increased level of interaction and care that positively impacts their health. Seek out supportive care and nurturing during your health journey. This can be from a practitioner you work with, through body work appointments, or in the company of a support group or class. Make sure these are in person and not just online. 3: Develop

Although we’ve all heard miracle healing stories, it’s best not to pin your hopes on one. The placebo effect alone is estimated to work between 18 to 80 percent of the time, which is a wide spread to bank on. Functional medicine is about creating new lifelong habits as much as it is about restoring function. By injecting the best that the placebo effect has to offer into your daily diet and protocol, you are laying the groundwork for a lifetime of more positive outcomes. a positivity and

gratitude practice.

Negativity is stressful and inflammatory. Doctors report that patients who are angry, don’t believe their treatment will work, or who are not supported by their friends and family in their healing journey may not experience optimal results. However, the person who expects the best from their protocol, learns about how their new diet and supplements work, and enjoys working with their practitioner enjoys less stress and inflammation and better results.

FOR

Trend Designs

2017

By Rebecca Scott, Interior Designer At Arhaus Furniture

2017

is a year of breaking the rules and bringing back some warmth and elegance

to our home spaces.

Here are five trends in design that you and your home will love.

No time constrictions There is no need to limit your design to one period of time. Feel free to blend antiques with your sleek and modern style. While you can start with the concept of a time period, bringing in an item outside that timeline adds character and interest to a room. The eclectic look will make your space feel cozy and approachable. Wallpaper The long-standing bias against wallpaper is finally over. With so many updates in technology, the options are endless. Wallpaper is adding texture, color and pattern to our flat walls. Mural wallpaper is a beautiful way of adding bold focal areas to spaces. Textural wallpaper that mimics

natural finishes such as wood or brick is trending as well. Large scale botanical designs are bringing the outdoors in. Shades of blue Blue shades are the 2017 color of choice. Utilizing navy instead of black adds dimension without overwhelming color in kitchen cabinets and large furniture pieces. Serene and sophisticated blue tones create an inviting and calming space. Jewel tones and those that are nature inspired are also on trend. Green brings out a natural and revitalizing feel. Warm metals Warm metals with a shine are all the rage. Copper is the hot new look while brass and

golds are still popular. The coppers and golds create a warm and less industrial feel in homes. The sheen adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to the space. Global Inspiration Adding pieces and elements with a global influence adds a liveliness and whimsy to our homes. Gone are the days of themed design that feel flat and staged. Adding an eclectic and worldly design is the look for 2017. The trends for 2017 are liberating and open the doors to mixing and matching styles and periods. Colors are jewel tones with warm metals adding a level of sophistication. So, enjoy the design freedom and have fun!

Top 4 American Adventures

In this issue, we are pleased to bring our readers the Top 4 American adventure trips, as selected by National Geographic.

DIVE FRESHWATER CAVES Little known fact: Florida’s best diving isn’t in its saltwater. It’s hidden in the northwestern corner of the state, which is riddled with freshwater springs that flow through mazes of limestone passageways. Few people ever witness the strange sights of these underwater chambers—fossils, sunlight beaming in from holes in the cave ceilings, and even ancient mastodon tusks—because the only way to see it all is by donning a mask and flippers.

HIKE THE ZION NARROWS If any place has the power to inspire awe, it’s the Zion Narrows, southern Utah’s premier hike in Zion National Park. For 16 miles, the canyon winds voluptuously through the crimson sandstone, in some spots stretching 2000 feet (610 meters) high and narrowing to 20 feet.

MOUNTAIN BIKE THE TAHOE RIM TRAIL Encircling the largest alpine lake in North America, the 165-mile Tahoe Rim Trail just may be the single track with the greatest view in the United States. In fact, the riding here is so sublime that the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) named the 21.8-mile section between Tahoe Meadows and Spooner Summit as one of its Epics. HELI-SKI THE RUBY MOUNTAINS Located about halfway between Reno and Salt Lake City off a lonely stretch of Interstate 80, Ruby Mountains Heli-Experience offers an Alaska-size day of powder shots in the Lower 48. The only difference is that in the isolated Ruby Mountains, you won’t have to share any of it with other back-country skiers or snowboarders. AC TI V E L I FE M AGAZI NE . C O M
