icroneedling has been a growing trend in the skin care industry, and with good reason: the results! Micro-needling, or “collagen induction therapy,” is a minimally invasive treatment that rejuvenates your skin by using dozens of fine needles to create invisible micro-punctures in the top layer of your skin, triggering the formation of new collagen and elastin. At ClarityMD, you can rest assured that our Collagen PIN treatments will offer you the satisfaction of beautiful skin with the expertise and care of a professional skin care specialist.
What are Collagen PIN treatments and how do they work?

Needling Device, delivers flawless results that many have only attained from ablative laser treatments or plastic surgery. What makes Collagen PIN unique is the number of needles. With three times more needles than any other device on the market, Collagen PIN covers a larger surface area to produce a greater collagen base.
In order to properly execute this treatment, skin is prepped with a topical numbing agent. A peptide-enhanced serum is then applied to help the Collagen PIN glide smoothly across your skin’s surface. The tiny needles help stimulate your skin’s natural healing process, while simultaneously delivering powerful building blocks of new skin, hyaluronic acid. We highly recommend you allow our professional staff to guide you through this treatment and warn against DIY treatments. An accredited

practitioner will select the appropriate needle depth and the number of applications required to properly treat your skin based upon your individual skin health. At-home treatments, if done improperly, can damage your skin and increase the recovery time.
Who can benefit from Collagen PIN treatments? “Collagen PIN is safe for all skin types and treats almost every skin condition—thinning skin, laxity, UV damage, rosacea, and more,” says Davina Isaacs, Director of Aesthetics at ClarityMD. Collagen PIN treatments are a great way to fight off the effects of aging,

but the benefits certainly don’t stop there. Following is a list of various skin issues and areas of application for which our Collagen PIN treatments can give beautiful results:
• Stretch Marks • Acne Scars • General Scarring • Lax skin • Neck • Décolletage • Hands • Arms • Legs • Abdomen • Back To learn more about this treatment and to find out if it is right for you, call ClarityMD at 317 571-8900.

Pain in the Knee...
When Is It Time to Talk Knee Replacement?

nee pain develops when cartilage breaks down. Cartilage is a rubbery tissue that serves as a cushion between the bones in your knee; and although cartilage is a tough and flexible tissue, it can be easily damaged. During knee replacement surgery, a surgeon removes damaged cartilage and bone and replaces them with an artificial joint made of metal and plastic. The artificial joint is connected to the thigh bone, shin and kneecap with adhesive substances, such as acrylic cement. Knee replacement surgery is something to be considered if your knee pain is so extreme that it interferes with activities you want to do or need to do and if you’ve exhausted other nonsurgical treatments, such as physical therapy and medication. Other potential signs that you should consider knee replacement include:
•
Knee pain that continues or recurs over time • A knee that aches during and
after exercise
• Lack of mobility • Knee pain
in spite of medication or use of a cane • A knee that stiffens up after sitting in a car or a movie theater seat • Pain in the knee during rainy weather • Pain that keeps you from sleeping • A decrease in the degree you are able to bend your knee • Stiff or swollen knees • Difficulty walking or climbing stairs • Difficulty getting out of a chair or the bathtub • Morning stiffness lasting less than 30 minutes • You feel a “grating” in the joint • A previous injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) The National Institutes of Health report that worldwide, more than 600,000 people undergo knee replacement each year, and 90 percent of those experience improvement in knee pain and function. Some knee pain can actually come from hip arthritis or a
pinched nerve in your back. To determine if you are a good candidate for knee replacement, an orthopedic surgeon will need to perform a thorough exam, review your X-rays and conduct physical tests. The surgeon will want to know if you have other joint pain or have injured your
knee in the past. Try keeping a journal of your knee pain to share at your appointment. The surgeon will test your knee joint for strength and range of motion. Knee replacement surgery is probably not appropriate if you have an infection or if the bone lacks the strength to support an artificial knee.
For more information on knee replacement, contact Joint Replacement Surgeons, a Franciscan Physician Network practice, with offices in Carmel and Mooresville. Call (317) 706-2361 or visit FranciscanDocs.org and search “Joint Replacement Surgeons.”

How to Choose the Right Swim Lessons for Your Child
Not all swim lesson programs and facilities are created equal! There are many factors you should consider when deciding to enroll your child in swim lessons. It goes without saying that the instructors should be friendly, knowledgeable and compassionate with the kids. However, there are a few other aspects of swim lesson programs that are equally as important, but tend to be given much less thought. SAFETY Safety is the top priority to consider when choosing a swim program for your child. The number one question to ask when evaluating a swim lesson program is if there is a supervisor or lifeguard on deck at all times
By Andrew Joseph Area Manager - Team Indy
when lessons are going on. If the answer is no, then this is a red flag that safety may not be the top priority at this swim facility. It is also important to ask if there is a low student-to-teacher ratio for each class. A 4:1 ratio is optimal to ensure safety for all students. Other questions to consider: Is everyone in the facility CPR and Lifeguard certified? Is there an AED in case of emergency? Is the entire staff trained to practice emergency action plans? If the answer to any of these questions is no, it raises another red flag. FACILITY The facility is another important factor to consider when enrolling your child in swim lessons.
I am proud to say that Goldfish Swim School checks off all of these boxes. If you want a swim lesson program that values the safety and comfort of your family as much as you do, give us a call to learn more!
When you walk in, ask yourself if the facility looks and feels clean. If the answer to these questions is no, then you might want to consider how likely is it that the areas you can’t see in the facility are being properly taken care of. Most people do not give chlorine,

pH, air quality, etc., a second thought, but pools can be hazardous to children's health if the chemicals are not kept at proper levels. Depending on the number of children you have enrolled in swim lessons, you could potentially be spending a significant amount of time at the facility. Ask yourself if it is a comfortable place to relax and watch your children take lessons. Parents use this time in many ways, and sometimes it can turn into a little “me time.” Small amenities like a snack bar, coffee or magazines are essential!

Why All Expecting Mothers Should Do Pilates
By Ashley Lowrie, Owner of Reforming Indy Pilates Studio
You’d do anything for the little one you’ve been awaiting and internally nurturing these few months. If you’re wondering if your body is ready for labor, consider Pilates.

t’s no secret that there are many benefits to exercising and staying active during pregnancy: improved energy levels, better sleep and faster postpartum recovery—just to name a few. However, not all exercise is created the same, and some forms of exercise are better suited for pregnancy than others. Prenatal Pilates is safe and effective for almost every expecting mother, and the exercises are intelligently designed to keep you fit and toned throughout pregnancy, while preparing the body to give birth.
Help Prevent Diastasis Recti
Working the abdominals properly during pregnancy is key to preventing Diastasis Recti (abdominal separation). Diastasis occurs when too much pressure is placed on the Rectus Abdominis (the 6 pack abs) and the Transverse Abdominis (our body’s corset) is not strong enough to support this pressure, causing the fascia holding the Rectus Abdominis together to stretch and separate. This can occur during pregnancy and

labor. During prenatal Pilates, exercises that target the Rectus Abdominis will be avoided and exercises that target the Transverse Abdominis (whose job it is to hold everything together) will become the focus to help prevent Diastasis Recti.
Strengthen and Learn to Release the Pelvic Floor
Learning to connect with the pelvic floor to strengthen and release these muscles is crucial throughout pregnancy and during the labor process. A strong pelvic floor helps to support the growing uterus and prevent incontinence during pregnancy. The ability to release the pelvic floor muscles is imperative during delivery. Pilates exercises that target the pelvic floor teach expecting mothers how to fully contract and consciously release the pelvic floor.
in preparation for giving birth. A side effect of this biological change is instability of the joints, particularly those surrounding the pelvis, which can cause pain or discomfort. Prenatal Pilates uses specific exercises to strengthen and stabilize the muscles that surround the joints, creating better bone alignment to prevent or alleviate pain.
in Prenatal Pilates. Reforming Indy instructors are certified Pre + Postnatal Pilates specialists through the Center for Women’s Fitness. Call 317 571-8880 to schedule your $39 Initial Prenatal Session.
Reduce Back Pain
Weight gain in the abdominal area, joint instability, and postural strain due to a shift in a woman’s center of gravity can create and cause back pain during pregnancy. Prenatal Pilates will focus on strengthening the deepest abdominal muscles and use gentle stretching techniques to deliver relief from these symptoms. When starting a Prenatal Pilates routine, it is important to find an instructor certified

The Beauty of All
Tara Dumser has been a professional makeup artist for nearly 20 years, developing in that time a reputation for impeccable customer service, and an eye for accentuating the beauty she inherently sees in her clients. “People don’t realize just how beautiful they are,” Tara says. Listening to Tara’s stories about her childhood in Owensboro, KY, and sensing the love of family and community that she grew up with, I couldn’t help but feel at home myself, transported to that time and place—even as we sat talking in a popular, indie café in Indianapolis’s SoBro neighborhood. “My G-ma, she’s my heart,” Tara starts. When her grandmother would bring Tara to her wig shop to babysit as she tended to her clients, it was a very special time—and Tara got in on all the action. “I thought she was hanging out with me!” she laughs. “Women came in for wigs, men came in for wigs, and I had my head measured for a child cancer patient. I loved how much it seemed like they all were friends—she could talk to any walk of life without any judgment.” Tara remembers flipping through wig catalogs and tabloids, admiring just how beautiful the women in them were. “My grandma taught me they went through a process to look that way,” she explains. “She’d show me before-andafter celebrity photos, and I just fell in love with the process of transformation right then and there."
A HUMBLE HEART
In addition to a thriving freelance business, Tara has worked with La Dolce Salon & Spa in Carmel’s Arts and Design District for the past seven years, as well as other salons in the Indianapolis area—and her work has been seen on the cover of In Touch Weekly, as well as in print ads for Adidas. But she doesn’t make a big deal out of the high-profile work she’s done. “I don’t like talking too much about all that,” Tara says. She understands, however, that such work is a testament to her quality artistic abilities and that these accolades are important to her clients. In Tara’s eyes, her greatest accomplishment is the consistent customer experience she provides. “I know that when you work with me, you’re going to get a positive experience with a beautiful outcome—whether that’s something you feel internally or externally,” she says. “I learned early on the importance of serving
A CTIV E LIF E MAGAZINE .COM
my customers,” she continues. “It almost seems these days to be a dying breed— those who provide great customer service.”
When in the midst of a session, Tara considers it her utmost professional duty to help her clients see in themselves what they may not have seen before. The glory of plum, for instance. “There are some moms out there who tell their kids it’s a sin to wear pink,” she says. “But those same girls might sit down with me, and I’ll think plum will look amazing on them, and I say, ‘Girl, you will rock some plum eyeliner.’” Whether it’s a 12-year old girl learning to do make-up for the first time, a bridal party on a trial run for the big day, or a runway photoshoot, Tara puts her entire focus on client needs. “Too many times in our industry, the beauty professional puts too much of themselves into it—but it’s not about us,” she says. “It’s about the person in the chair, about their transformation, and it’s so important for me to be purposeful with what I’m doing—they came to see me to fulfill a need, and that’s what I’m there for.” Yes, Tara always aims to meet client requests. Surely, though, she occasionally longs to get her full-out creative juices flowing, right? Well, there’s a need for that, too. “Photoshoots are where I usually get the most creative outlet,” she says, “You know, the crazy fun looks that are off the charts!” But she explains that she doesn’t accomplish these outlandish looks all on her own. “You work with an entire team to bring this vision to life,” she says, “and it can be so easy when so many creative talents come together.”
FLIPPING IT AROUND
Of course, Tara’s clients aren’t the only people with needs. There’s also her two young boys, ages 3 and 5—and Tara spends every day helping them to live as joyfully and creatively as possible. Like most kids this age, she says they spend a lot of time playing outside and coloring. “They’re really an amazing workout,” she laughs. “Every moment I pray I don’t step on a Lego!” But she’s most excited by their budding creativity. “My 3-year-old has amazing penmanship, and they both can read,” Tara tells me. “My 5-year-old creates these crazy stories—I’m just embracing it and hope he holds onto that creative spark.”
Is there such a thing as balance in Tara’s life—that is, between her work as a make-up artist and her roles as woman, friend, and mother? “People say it’s all about balance, but there’s no such thing,” she says to me. “I think you just do your best, and don’t beat yourself up. If you didn’t spend enough time with your kids one day, there’s tomorrow. Every day is a clean slate, and every moment is a chance to flip it around.”
LIVING TO SERVE
In a world where so many artists make such great efforts to wear every ounce of talent on their sleeves—and as a writer and singer myself, I understand the seeming need to do this—I wanted to know where Tara’s humility was born. “I think coming from where I came from… I’ve always worked, and it’s never stopped since I was 15,” she says. “Nothing’s ever been handed to me, and I don’t like to brag because it’s not about me.” Tara says she wears black to most of her sessions—that she doesn’t want to bring unnecessary attention to herself. “Sometimes I think about what the world would be like if each morning we asked ourselves, ‘How may I serve others?’” Tara says. “Some might say you do make-up, how do you answer that question—and I say there are many ways to serve. My work is about the experience—not just about painting faces.” This theme of serving informs her philosophy of success. “You can have the tallest building in town and accomplish that by knocking others down, or by building yours strong and worrying about your own.” Building that strong business—and those strong relationships— is what Tara strives to do each and every day, with each and every client. And what advice does Tara have for those who think they can learn everything about anything—including make-up artistry—from the Internet? “You can watch YouTube all day long, and yes, you’ll find make-up that looks phenomenal,” she says. “But what was that editing process like? How long did it really take to get there?” It all comes back to those lessons learned in her grandmother’s wig shop all those years ago—it’s about serving and building. “There’s just nothing like the connection that comes by working one-on-one with someone, and experiencing that revelation of beauty together.” Tara’s G-ma must be proud.

owes much of her success in business to the on-demand nature of social media. But she has strong views on the ease of getting what you want online. “Thank goodness I didn’t grow up with it,” she says. “I would have had five pounds of make-up at fiveyears-old!”

Main Street Poké, located in the Arts & Design District in beautiful downtown Carmel, opened in May 2017, and is locally owned and operated by Brinna Voege and her partner, Dave Tang. It is the first Poké restaurant to open in the entire state of Indiana. Voege says, "The first time I had Poké was in California, and I fell in love with the mixture of flavors and wanted to bring it to my hometown of Carmel." Poké (pronounced poh-keh) is traditionally a Hawaiian dish of diced raw fish. But although it originally comes from Hawaii, we pull flavors from all over the world and keep to our Midwest roots by adding corn, beef and chicken. Poké bowls are basically deconstructed sushi served in a bowl, and Main Street Poké specializes in allowing customers to customize their own bowl their way! Each customer starts by choosing a bowl size, which determines how many scoops of protein. The most popular proteins are the marinated ahi tuna and marinated salmon, but we also serve eel, hamachi, shrimp, chicken and beef. Next, the customer chooses the base: brown rice, white rice or spring mix. You can add any or all of our fresh veggies, which are prepared daily inhouse. Veggie options include green onion, cucumber, carrots, corn, bell pepper, purple cabbage, kimchi, ginger, edamame, wasabi, spicy crab, seaweed salad, marinated mushrooms and tamago. Lastly, you top the bowl with any of our delicious homemade sauces, which range from sweet to spicy. "I believe that Main Street Poké will appeal to Carmel residents because it’s so healthy and trendy," says Voege. 5 THINGS To Do in Colorado Before Summer's Over
On Colorado's Western Slope, primarily around Palisade, Grand Junction, Paonia, Hotchkiss and Cedaredge, the mountains and plains conspire to create a perfect climate for some of the country's most innovative and charming wineries. Amid orchards of peach, cherry and apple trees, acre upon acre of neat green rows of grapevines stand in stark contrast to the red sandstone mesas and deep azure sky. Stop in some of the intimate wineries for stellar classics like chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon and interesting Rieslings, gewürztraminers, petit verdots and malbecs.
2. Shrine Pass
One of the most spectacular places to dive into Colorado wildflowers is Shrine Pass, near Vail. In summer, the Shrine Mountain Trail dips into meadow after meadow blanketed with yellow daisies, coral-colored Indian paintbrush, spikes of purple lupine and fuchsia fireweed, all spread out in a kaleidoscope of nature's brightest pigments. From the trail's ridge, your 360-degree

3. Ute Mountain Tribal Park
Ute Mountain Tribal Park near Cortez is only open to the public through a unique program in which Ute guides navigate visitors into the wilderness that abuts Mesa Verde National Park's southern boundary. This land was home to ancestral Puebloans 1,000 years ago, who built cliff dwellings and irrigated and farmed the land. With only 1,300 visitors per year, Ute Mountain is undeveloped and quiet. Hike narrow trails and climb steep ladders onto high ledges—and feel like you have the place to yourself.

As hikers approach the falls along a winding, half-mile trail at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains on the way to Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve at Alamosa, it feels a bit like they're chasing it: They can hear the roar of the 40-foot-tall Zapata Falls and feel its cooling effect long before they can actually see it. The view from the trailhead encompasses the expansive San Luis Valley and the entire field of the distant dunes. Other wilderness hiking and biking trails can be accessed in the same area.

Choosing just one essential Denver summer experience is difficult. Squeezing both into one weekend will have you in Colorado bliss.
provide a powerful mystique. Early evening concerts are especially enchanting, as the waning rays of a Colorado sunset frame the stage and paint the setting with pastel colors. If you're from Colorado and have never been, it's time to redeem yourself as a respectable Coloradan. And if you've been before, it's time to go again before you've let another summer concert season slip by. Fans of Colorado's boys of summer are the luckiest we know. Coors Field is one of the Major League Baseball's most scenic, friendly and reasonably priced venues—and the breeze of a summer evening feels quintessentially perfectColorado no matter where your seat is (though we're particularly fond of the rooftop bar).
Every Coloradan's—and perhaps even the nation's— favorite outdoor concert venue, Red Rocks' massive, slanting redrock outcroppings rise from the earth to create an acoustically ideal natural amphitheater. But the experience goes beyond the music itself. The iconic rocks
