Spring 2017 Hair,

Beauty and Style

S

pring is just a ro u n d t h e c o r n e r, and it is my favorite time to discuss hair and beauty trends emerging for the new season. After recently spending some time in NYC to attend a spring/summer fashion event, it is undeniable that bold, bright colors like yellow and coral, whether in stripes or beautiful floral, are sure to be a fashion favorite this year. Classics, like crisp white tailored shirts, will take a twist toward the more avant-garde with statement pieces featuring unique collars and eye-catching hemlines. Powder blue, seer-sucker, and even silk pajama pants are on-trend and are eagerly awaiting to debut with the arrival of spring. As anticipated, the hair and makeup seen gracing recent runways does not disappoint. This year we will still see some old friends, but all eyes will be on fresh, new cuts and colors. Short hair, whether in a pixie or a “grown-out” shag, might be the most daring (and certainly most liberating) trend this year. Pair it with platinum blonde, or light shades of golden brown (“bronde”), and you’ve got the knockout combination of 2017

8

for envy-worthy hair. Be prepared to be asked, “Who does your hair?” Not ready to chop off your locks? That’s quite alright, too. In continuation from last season's obsession with curls, big texture and waves continue to be on-point. The ‘80s-inspired curls and extreme side partings, also known as the “flip,” will continue to gain in popularity.

• Ultra-long extensions aren't going anywhere. We've seen them on Rihanna, Jourdan Dunn and the Kardashians in recent months, and the trend is poised to make an even bigger splash this summer. • The Bob. What can we say? It’s a classic. Never truly out of style, just always evolving. Blunt, wavy and with a heavy fringe (or no fringe at all) is how we do the Bob this spring and summer.

If endless volume or maneuvering a curling iron is not your thing, no need to worry. The “wet look” is back, but this time, it is better described as the “sleek and sophisticated look.” Pull out your paddle brush, pomade and your flat iron. Straight, shiny (incredibly shiny), off-the-face hair rounds out the top three hottest hair trends of 2017.

Whether you rekindle a relationship with your flat iron or purchase the latest curling wand, please remember that these styles will only work if your hair is healthy—not fried. Using the proper products to achieve these looks, and to protect your hair, is just as important as getting the proper cut and color from a knowledgeable and experienced hair stylist.

on the emerging and ever-evolving beauty trends. Educating our clients on proper hair care and technique is our passion—so much so that we now offer “blow-dry and style” parties for FREE to our clients and the greater community. It’s a great way to have a fun and educational girls’ night out, or even to raise money for your organization. (We donate a portion of the evening’s proceeds to different charities and schools). While enjoying wine and light appetizers, you and your friends are given hands-on tips from our expert stylists on how to care and style your own hair. Shop our boutique, learn the latest tricks for mastering the perfectly effortless (looking) curls, and spend an evening with your girlfriends. It’s so much fun, we promise. Why do we do this for free, you ask? Because YOU are our biggest compliment. If you can recreate the salon-look at home, we have done our job and done it well. HEALTH & Wellness that can still be slowed, halted or reversed. For instance, lab markers that show elevated blood sugar, inflammation and poor liver function allow you to easily reverse the march towards diabetes.

Why Lab Testing Is

Another example is autoimmunity. A significant amount of tissue must be destroyed before conventional medicine can diagnose autoimmune disease. However, by testing for antibodies against tissue, the autoimmune progression can be slowed or stopped in its early stages.

Important in Functional Medicine By Clifford W. Fetters, M.D.

FUNCTIONAL LAB TESTING TRACKS PROGRESS

Food sensitivity. Gut testing. Blood chemistry panel. Chemical and metal sensitivity testing. Just a few of the lab tests that can move your health in the right direction.

L

ab testing is foundational to functional medicine, and for good reason. It can show you what is causing your symptoms, if you are headed toward a disease (even if you don’t have symptoms), track the progress of your protocol, and motivate you to stick with your protocol. Lab testing includes many different tests. Some examples of testing used in functional medicine include: Food sensitivity testing. If a food you eat regularly causes inflammation, this contributes to chronic health disorders. Gut testing. Gut problems contribute to chronic health issues. Tests can screen for leaky gut, gut function, parasites, bacterial overgrowth and autoimmune reactions. Blood chemistry panel. This is an excellent starting point in functional medicine testing and

16

includes the use of functional medicine ranges (versus lab ranges). Blood testing screens for some diseases and can catch a trend toward a disease while there’s still time to reverse it.

These are just a few examples of the types of testing used in functional medicine. What type of testing you need depends on your symptoms and health history.

Chemical and metal sensitivity testing. As with foods, an immune reaction to chemicals or metals can trigger chronic inflammatory health disorders.

WHY LAB TESTING IS IMPORTANT IN FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE

Adrenal testing. Adrenal testing reveals the relationship between your health and stress handling. The most important test is the second one because it shows if your protocol is working. If not, you need to dig deeper. Hormone testing. Hormone imbalances profoundly affect health. Testing screens for excesses, deficiencies, feedback loops, and how well you metabolize hormones. DNA genetic testing. Genetic testing delivers insight into disease risk and genetic metabolic variations that affect health. An example is the MTHFR variance.

A CTIVE LIF E MAG A ZIN E | M A R CH 2 0 1 7

Functional medicine is based on peer-reviewed science and finds the root cause of your symptoms. There are a variety of factors that can lead to depression, fatigue, chronic pain, poor function and other chronic health disorders. FUNCTIONAL LAB TESTING SHOWS A TREND TOWARD DISEASE

Although the first test is important for identifying health problems, subsequent testing is also crucial to let you know whether your protocol is working. If there is no improvement, it means you have not hit on the right protocol or discovered all the underlying causes. LAB TESTING IMPROVES COMPLIANCE AND SOCIAL SUPPORT Seeing the results of a lab test makes it easier to stick with a protocol. It also can encourage a disbelieving spouse, family member or friend to support you. Many people think gluten sensitivity is just a fad, or that your symptoms aren’t real and you simply complain too much. Your lab results validate your symptoms and can help others be more supportive. Call our office about functional lab testing to help you get to the bottom of your chronic health condition. 317 663-7123

In conventional medicine, doctors use labs to screen for disease. Once a condition has become a disease, such as diabetes or autoimmune disease, the damage is significant. Functional medicine uses lab testing to catch a health trend that is on the way to disease but

Cover Story

Before opening beauty + grace a year-and-a-half ago, Jenni spent ten years travelling the world as a meeting planner. “When I wasn’t hosting a meeting,” Jenni says, “I’d slip out and go to local boutiques to see what they were offering to the women in their cities. I said to myself that one day, when I retired from meeting planning, I wanted to open a women’s boutique, and try to do the same for our city.” (At this point, just as Jenni prepares to share the story of how beauty + grace came to be, a customer walks in. Jenni excuses herself from the interview and steps seamlessly into her sales role. The customer works a few stores down, and wanted to see if Jenni still had that coat she’d been looking at. The coat is found, and the sale is a success!) “My husband and I had three children in two-and-a-half years,” Jenni says, picking up from where she’d left off. At night, or early in the morning, when the kids were asleep, she worked tirelessly for years on a business plan. “That whole time, I was working on making my dream come true, and a month after putting my littlest one on the bus to kindergarten, I opened the store.” And open it in style, did she ever—to a VIP gala for 300 on opening night. “The best part was seeing my three children and husband in awe that it all came together so beautifully,” Jenni tells me. “I have this picture of my daughter looking into the store that night with all the people, and you can tell from her expression that she was just speechless. I never skipped a beat in trying to raise them well, and I don’t think they realized what I was doing until they walked into the store.” And that’s a point Jenni prides herself on—challenging herself to be present in her moments. “Whether it’s motherhood, or being a great daughter or friend, or a great woman-owned business, I want to be fully present in that.” FIERCELY LOYAL SUPPORT Jenni says it’s the people that she’s surrounded herself with in life that have led to her success— not at all least of these being her family. Inspiration often finds its way into our lives without our even realizing it at the time, and as a child growing up in Indianapolis, Jenni learned valuable lessons in perseverance from her own mother. “My Mom never finished college,” she says. “She had us when she was young, and was very supportive of my Dad, who owned an insurance company.” But her mother had dreams outside the confines of home sweet home. “After we went into elementary school, she went out and talked her way into doing meeting planning for Lilly, and later

20

for the Lawrence Township School Foundation,” Jenni tells me. “Doors closed, of course, because she didn’t have an education, but she was such a hardworking woman—she didn’t give up, and by golly, she was going to do something she loved. I think that’s a lot of why I am who I am.” But Jenni admits she couldn’t be the successful woman she is without her husband, children, and a “fiercely loyal” troupe of friends. “My husband couldn’t be more supportive,” she says. “The first 8 years, he was working so hard to build his practice in orthopedic surgery, working 80 hours a week, but now he can take a reduced work load to let me fulfill my dream.” And he never fails to rise to the occasion to play “Mr. Mom,” running the carpool, or staying home while Jenni’s on business in New York. “He works so hard during the day helping others with

their injuries, and also works so hard at home balancing the kids’ schedules, making dinner, doing laundry—all with a little help of the ‘while-Mom's-in-NYC to-do list,” she jokes. She also has close girlfriends who support Jenni in the day-to-day running of the boutique. “I’m here two days a week doing sales, and each of my friends takes a day. While they’re doing sales, I’m wearing the ownership hat,” she says. “I never worry about the store when I’m not here—they’re fiercely loyal. It really takes a tribe of women!” Good for Jenni and her whole family is the time they spend together, and Jenni does whatever she can to open up quality time for her husband and children. “I wake up at 4:30 in the morning, and I think I get more done before I put the kids on the bus than some people do in their whole day,” she laughs. They also love to travel together, although

A CTIVE LIF E MAG A ZIN E | M A R CH 2 0 1 7

she admits it’s getting harder to find time for that. “We went to Iceland together last fall, and not too long ago we surprised the kids with a spontaneous trip to Toronto to see Taylor Swift,” she says. (The excitement was unstoppable, she tells me.) “When we’re away from home, it’s our chance to turn off the phones, regroup, and just be.” BUILDING COMMUNITY—AND LOOKING GOOD DOING IT! Spending ten years in a hectic corporate environment, raising children, and simultaneously fulfilling the roles of mother, wife, and daughter, Jenni became very familiar with the time crunch that so many women these days find themselves in. “When I opened the store, I knew I wanted to help women who have multi-dimensional schedules to dress from morning to night,” Jenni says. Featuring selected styles from 38 international designers, Jenni’s mission is to help women feel more confident and beautiful in what they’re wearing, at all times of the day. “I love that great evening look – great heels, great dress, great handbag,” Jenni says, “but the reality is, those nights are few and far between now. I am trying to provide styles you can wear all day long, just changing accessories, shoes, handbag, throw on a blazer on top of what you’re wearing.” Having succeeded in launching her own dream, Jenni is also proud to support other women-owned local businesses by partnering with them to provide fashion events at her shop. You’ve heard of wine and canvas by now. But how about fashion and flowers? “I’m working with ladybird, a local, Mom-owned florist, to host a ‘Succulent Sand Terrarium’ workshop,” Jenni tells me. “It’s open to thirty women, and we’ll drink wine and create something beautiful—and just be together.” If you prefer pretty paper to pretty flowers, beauty + grace is also hosting a workshop with Oliver’s Twist where attendees will create their own marbled paper stationery set. “This is how I’m thinking outside the box to work with other women,” Jenni says, “and I think that supporting each other is really important.” IMAGINING THE POSSIBILITIES beauty + grace has only been around for a year and half, but Jenni couldn’t be more proud of where she’s at right now—both in business and at home. “I’m excited to see where we’ve come in 18 months, with a popular online website, the in-store fashion events we have, and all the women we’ve helped in Carmel and the surrounding area,” Jenni says. She admits she doesn’t know exactly what the future holds, but she looks forward to the successes and joys it may bring. “I feel like I’ve been really blessed,” she says. “Running a successful business, raising happy, healthy children, having a supportive husband and being a good wife, mom, and friend. It’s all so important to me. I just couldn’t be happier.”

Push-Up to Spiderman Start in standard push-up position. Your hands, pointing forward, should be under your shoulders or slightly wider. Keep your core engaged, this will help keep the body in one long straight line, bend your arms and lower yourself as close to the floor as you can. Then push back up to the starting plank position. Now drive the left knee up alongside the body towards the left elbow. Repeat the push-up and execute the spiderman with the right knee. Continue to alternate sides with a push-up in between. Option: This exercise can be beginner-friendly as well. Same push-up position as above, but with your knees on the floor. You can keep one knee on the ground as you execute the spiderman.

ost months, we at Active Life highlight adventure or family vacation ideas here in the Travel and Explore section. In doing so, though, we neglect the amazing opportunities to “escape” the day-to-day routine right here in central Indiana. It really is possible to forget your worries and have a world-class adventure—without even so much as a refill of your gas tank! This month we bring you: The Escape Room. The concept for The Escape Room Indianapolis and Fishers arose from a trip to Budapest, Hungary in 2014. The founders, Scott and Marjorie Neal, experienced their first escape room while visiting their friend in Budapest. After their friend described the escape room

concept they were initially not interested. However, once told that it was the #1 tourist attraction in the city, they just had to try it. The small room, located in the basement of a dilapidated Soviet-Era apartment building, wreaked of mold, with old props and no particular theme. However, they had a fun time—even though they did not escape.

the industry. After presenting his findings to Marjorie, the decision was made to form the company in October 2014. Scott spent the next five months writing a business plan only to realize they needed additional investment capital. Having difficulties finding investors, Scott received a phone call from Brendon Harbron who led a group of investors that had heard about their business. Brendon’s group was on a parallel course but several months behind. Rather than competing, Brendon suggested a partnership to which Scott and Marjorie agreed. The Escape Room Indianapolis opened to great praise and reviews on October 2, 2015, with five unique rooms: Hoosier Hysteria, Jail Break,

Art Gallery, Bank Heist and KGB Interrogation. Building on the success of downtown, the partnership decided to open their second location in Fishers on December 1, 2016, with six new room themes: Race Rooms 1 and 2, 1776, Titanic, Night at The Castle and Stalag 21. Learning from the experiences downtown, the Fishers location was taken to a whole new level in room complexity and lounge space. The Escape Room Fishers is located in The Nickel Plate District at 8890 E. 116th St. With two lounges and a patio, the Fishers lounge and rooms can accommodate up to 200 people. Both Indianapolis and Fishers locations offer Indiana craft beers and wines as well as catering for larger events.

It wasn’t until the flight home that they thought a concept like this might work in Indianapolis. They realized they could be successful attracting groups of friends and families on the weekends, but to be truly successful they would need an upscale lounge where corporations could gather their employees for team building events. Upon returning home, Scott spent a week researching
