FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH

Don’t let your quest for perfection come at too high a cost.

As we age, we all find ourselves searching for the fountain of youth. We idolize celebrities, take pictures with filters, and Photoshop images. Everywhere we look we are surrounded by an “altered state.” Let’s be honest, we all want to look and feel our best, and there is nothing wrong with that. However, don’t let your quest for “perfection” come at a cost. Recently, a client mentioned her friend was having an in-house party and was getting a “deal.” Red flag! Would you go to a friend’s house, mingle, drink wine, and have dental work performed in a living room? No! Because it’s a medical procedure. The same rules apply with dermal fillers. These are medical procedures and should be taken seriously. I recently sat down with Dermatologic Surgeon and founder of Laser and Skin Surgery Center of Indiana (LASSI), Dr. C. William Hanke, to shed some light on what to look for. What are the DOs and DON’Ts of dermal fillers? Do: • Entrust your filler/Botox injections to a board-certified dermatologist who is experienced with injectable treatments. Dermatologists have training and understanding of the aging face and how to correct it.. Don't: • Go with the least expensive prices. When it comes to fillers, you are paying for the physician’s extensive training and experience as well as the cost of the product. Complications and problems

10

usually occur in the hands of inexperienced individuals with limited training. How do you choose a qualified provider? The American Academy of Dermatology has a “Find a dermatologist/dermatologic surgeon” option on their site where you can locate qualified physicians in your area. What are the risks of not going to a qualified provider? Unnatural results, excessive bruising, prolonged swelling, muscle drooping

A CTIVE LIF E MAG A ZIN E | O CTO B E R 2 0 1 7

What about pricing? Pricing for Botox is by unit, but different physicians’ prices may vary. The experience and training of the physician trumps differences in price. Want to learn more? Attend the annual Fall Beauty Bash, November 2nd from 4-8PM, hosted by LASSI. More information can be found on LASSI’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook. com/thelassi/

Hip Replacement

By Anthony Feher, MD

Could It Be an Option for You?

T

hirty years ago, hip replacement surgery was a major procedure that only people over the age of 60 would seriously consider. However, advanced technology, surgical innovations and improved artificial parts make today’s hip replacements able to withstand more stress and strain. No longer is age the determining factor, but rather the patient’s general health and level of activity. The most common reason someone would consider hip replacement surgery is to counteract pain, stiffness and disability that result from a worn-out hip joint. Hip joints may wear out due to osteoarthritis, a condition where the cushioning between joints breaks down, or rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic inflammatory disease that causes joint pain or vascular necrosis. Patients with hip arthritis most often suffer from groin pain and occasionally even knee pain. As hip arthritis progresses, it may become difficult to do common activities such as putting your shoes on or getting into or out of a car. Non-surgical options include medication and physical therapy. In some patients, a combination of anti-inflammatory medications and weight loss along with changes in activities are enough to relieve hip pain. Injections of corticosteroid

medications may also provide temporary pain relief. Before suggesting hip replacement surgery, your doctor may suggest walking aids such as a cane, which can remove some of the load from the hip joint. If none of these efforts bring relief from persistent pain and you find yourself withdrawing from playing golf, walking around the block, or even taking a long-anticipated trip, it may be time to consider a surgical solution.

The Direct Anterior Approach During hip replacement surgery, diseased parts of the hip joint are removed and replaced with artificial parts. Hip replacement surgery can be done several ways. One of the newer methods, called the direct anterior approach, is gaining in popularity. This technique spares muscle tissue, and it typically involves a short hospital stay and quick recovery time. Most hip replacement surgery candidates are eligible for the direct anterior procedure. However, other approaches may work better for patients who have bone loss in the hip socket or deformities at the top of the femur bone. X-rays can confirm these conditions. After hip surgery using the direct anterior approach, patients usually stay in the hospital for one night. They go home with a walker

until they can walk steadily. That can vary from a few days to a few weeks. Most patients take minimal pain medication after hip replacement surgery. Three weeks after surgery, some patients can return to driving; and after the first eight weeks, they can begin low impact exercises, such as swimming or biking, to build strength. The long-term outlook is good, with most patients returning to their normal routine. However, some activities, like running or playing basketball, place a lot of stress on the hip joint and are not recommended after hip replacement surgery. For more information about hip replacements and the direct anterior approach, contact Joint Replacement Surgeons, a Franciscan Physician Network practice. The practice has offices in Carmel and Mooresville. Call (317) 706-2361 or visit FranciscanDocs.org and search “Joint Replacement Surgeons.”

ALM Cover Story

THE EARLY STRUGGLES

Cristina moved to Indiana with her family when she was just seven years old, which taught her to have a thick skin in the face of adversity at an early age. As if learning a new language wasn’t enough of a struggle, there was the culture shock. Such seemingly miniscule gestures like greeting a friend with a kiss on the cheek was met with everything but reciprocation. Her classmates also poked fun at the way she pronounced words. “I never let it get me down, though,” she says. “I learned how to overcome things at an early age, and it made me into the person I am today.”

A VOICE THROUGH DANCE

Latin dance was a mainstay of Cristina’s childhood. From ballroom and salsa to merengue, she found dancing to be an effective coping mechanism during those challenging early years in Indiana. “Dance was a way I could express myself,” she says. “It helped me to

get past the struggles that came with moving here.” When she was a student at Cathedral High School, Cristina spread that love of dance to her classmates by founding Cathedral’s Latin American Dance Team. These days, Cristina’s coaching the team she began over a decade ago. “It’s still so fun!” she says. “There are now over 100 juniors and seniors auditioning every year.” While working on her degree at Purdue University, Cristina continued dancing on Purdue’s ballroom dance team, winning first place in her division in cha-cha. Then came graduation and the real world. “I graduated college and got out into the work force and thought, what’s next?” she says. “I wanted to stay in dance, so I decided to audition for the Indianapolis Colts Cheerleaders. I was blessed to make it and spend the next few years as an NFL cheerleader.” The time Cristina spent as a Colts cheerleader were some of the hardest, yet most rewarding, years she has ever known, and it taught

her much that serves her to this day. “Building relationships was the most rewarding part of the Colts experience,” Cristina says. “I learned how to communicate with all sorts of people and personalities, and learned how to mesh with a team. We always said, ‘Teamwork makes the dream work,’ and I still use that with my team now. You can accomplish so much more if you’re working together as a team.”

ELEVATED TO A NEW LEVEL

That attitude toward teamwork forms a core part of Cristina’s philosophy in her role as CEO of MH Indy, the franchisee of Massage Heights in Indianapolis. “I wear a lot of hats in my position, from organizing a variety of events, to working with my management team, coordinating marketing efforts, handling the financial aspects of a new business to recruiting all positions.” Make no mistake, though, Cristina loves to be involved in all that her team is doing. “I’m not a leader who sits

myself, and it has led to this.

back,” she says. “I’m a big believer in leading by example.”

Photography By Eduardo Peña

After finishing her time with the Colts Cheerleaders, Cristina joined her husband, who still serves as CIO for Massage Heights’ corporate office, on a business trip to San Antonio and decided to get a massage to help with her back pain.

“Dance was a way I could express myself,” Cristina says. “It helped me to get past the struggles that came with moving here.”

A CTIV E LIF E MAGAZINE .COM

“I’d just finished my time with the Colts cheering and traveled to San Antonio to be with my husband while he was there for work,” she explains. “My lower back was really hurting. My body had been through four years of cheer at that point.” Cristina immediately gravitated towards the brand — and delighted in the results of the work they did for her — from the very beginning. “I found complete relief even in those first few sessions, and I fell in love with the culture — the concept and the wellness behind it,” she says. When the opportunity arose to open her own Massage Heights location, Cristina jumped at the chance. “Massage Heights is something I really believe in, and I want to bring awareness to how important regular massages and facials can be for overall well-being,” Cristina says. “If I’d have known about massage when I was cheering, it could have helped me so much with frequent soreness and minor injuries.” Cristina explains that Massage Heights is an upscale massage and facial retreat. “Everything we do — every massage and facial — is customized to the guest’s needs,” she says. Boasting a super sleek and modern look styled in grays and whites, the Massage Heights Ironworks location, opening Oct. 26 at 2721 E. 86th Street, Indianapolis, will provide guests with a truly world-class retreat experience. But don’t equate upscale services with high pricing. Cristina admits that massage is often seen for many as

a luxury. “Times are changing,” she says. “Massage can be affordable and convenient now, and it should be seen as part of the full package that goes along with a healthy lifestyle and healthy well-being.”

FACING A BRIGHT FUTURE

At just 28-years-old, Cristina couldn’t be more positive about what’s going on in her life, and what possibilities her future holds. Much of her inspiration comes from her husband, she says — and together, they form one dynamic entrepreneurial duo. “I just can’t say enough good things about him,” she tells me. “We are a team in every aspect of life. We are together a lot and I wouldn’t have it any other way. He’s helped me develop as a person and in business as an entrepreneur, and I’m grateful to him.” Cristina also looks forward to the community involvement and impact that her work with Massage Heights will bring. Once open, Cristina wants to work with her Massage Heights team to support local charitable organizations. “I think it’s important to get outside the retreat and to give back,” she tells me. It’s clear that a consistent theme of gratitude colors Cristina’s life experience. “I’m proud of my accomplishments so far, and how far I’ve come,” she says. “The path I’ve been put on in life has been very purposeful.” Instilled deep within, she still feels that fire that came from learning a new way of life at an early age. “I guess I’ve always had that fire in me,” she says. “That sense of, ‘don’t underestimate me and who I can be.’” Massage Heights Ironworks: Open Oct. 26, 2017 Massage Heights Carmel: Scheduled to Open December 2017 Third Massage Heights Location:

Color Trends That Should Be on Your radar

We are officially three months away from 2018!

O

f all the design trends we look forward to most in the coming year, color holds a steady spot at the top of our list. After all, it sets the tone for what furniture we buy, what decor we invest in, and the overall mood for that design year. Sherwin-Williams predicts that 2018 will embody the spirit of contemporary life with their three color palettes: Affinity, Connectivity and Sincerity. Each one is inspired by the collective culture of the moment—from fashion to technology—and captures the aura of a year that is bound to be full of progress.

AFFINITY This color story of striking blue, animated fuchsia and stabilizing brown, the Affinity palette is set to celebrate the connection of people and places.

CONNECTIVITY The Connectivity palette draws from innovations in tech, including pixelated oranges, digital blues and greens, and high-def yellow.

“We’re remapping our sense of community, landlocked cities are becoming global hubs of crafts and gastronomy,” says Wadden, Sherwin-Williams' Director of Marketing. “Home and car sharing, as well as e-learning, have created a culture of everyday nomadism and the wanderlust-obsessed.”

“In Silicon Valley, Austin, Berlin and Beijing, techies are the new hippies, full of breakthrough ideas and utopian ideals,” Wadden says. “Connectivity is modern and playful, bringing in dark watery tones of blue that are balanced with neutrals, warm yellow and energetic purples.”

Affinity is just like any good getaway: relaxed but full of unexpected fun. Decorate accordingly with a base of neutral browns and vibrant accent colors in an array of pinks and blues.

Punctuate any room with some tech-inspired hues (like this bright green fireplace), while working in some much-needed warmth with understated grays and creams.

A CTIVE LIF E MAG A ZIN E | O CTO B E R 2 0 1 7

SINCERITY Minimalism isn't going anywhere in 2018. However, it is taking on a less structured look. “With the Sincerity palette, silence is no longer empty, but instead is rare and rich with possibility,” says Wadden. “Sincerity is about mindful living and creating an environment to disconnect and recharge. Soft, washed neutrals, greens and sanctuary pinks work together to create harmony.” Step away from the stark light and dark contrasts, and embrace color fluidity. This palette is all about ditching harsh lines for sandy browns, muted grays, and hazy greens that harmonize perfectly. Don't stress too much about sticking to a strict color scheme, but instead let one organic shade blend into the next. AC TI V E L I FE M AGAZI NE . C O M

1. Virgin Island's Creek, France This little bay is hidden on an island off the coast of Finistère, to the west of Brittany and is nestled between two cliffs, which is why it's called a 'creek'; the French term is actually 'Ile Vierge.'

2. Zlatni Rat Beach, Croatia Also referred to as the golden horn, the name itself demands your attention. This gorgeous piece of coastline can be found in the South of Croatia in the Dalmatia region.

3. Pinarello Beach, Corsica Another gorgeous (and more importantly, hidden) beach in the Mediterranean is Pinarello beach in Corsica, a French island

filled with mountains, steep cliff faces and absolute seclusion. 4. Cala Gonone, Sardinia This small town in Sardinia, Italy, has some fantastic beaches to explore, and often you can enjoy them almost entirely to yourself. With the crystal clear waters and hot Italian sun, there’s hardly any reason not to come!

5. Smuggler’s Cove, Zakynthos, Greece The Ionian island of Zakynthos (or Zante) has its fair share of remote beaches. Set off on a mini-adventure to the most secluded of them all, Smuggler’s Cove. There are boats and private charters circling south to the cove—allowing plenty of time for turtle-spotting on the way.
