SCHOLARSHIPS TO STUDY IN JAPAN
JFUNU SCHOLARSHIP FOR PHD IN SUSTAINABILITY SCIENCE
The Japan Foundation for UNU (JFUNU) Scholarship is available for outstanding applicants from developing countries who can demonstrate a need for financial assistance and who are granted admissions to the PhD program in Sustainability Science at United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS).
ELIGIBILITY: This scholarship is open to applicants from developing countries who can demonstrate a need for financial assistance; Applicants who are currently living in Japan under a working visa are NOT eligible for the scholarship; Applicants who want to pursue a second PhD degree at UNU-IAS are not eligible for the scholarship. For full eligibility requirements, click here. AWARD: Recipients will be awarded a monthly allowance of ¥120,000 JPY for living expenses for a maximum of 36 months. However, travel costs to and from Japan, visa handling fees, and health/ accident insurance costs must be covered by the student. The tuition fees are fully waived for the scholarship recipients. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology offers scholarships to international students who wish to study at Japanese universities as undergraduate students under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program.
ELIGIBILITY: These scholarships are open to citizens of countries that have diplomatic relations with the Japanese government. For full eligibility requirements, click here. AWARD: Recipients will be awarded tuition and other fees, allowance of ¥117,000 JPY per month (an additional monthly stipend of ¥2,000 JPY or ¥3,000 JPY may be provided to those undertaking study or research in specially designated regions) and travel costs to and from Japan. AICHI SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
This scholarship is aimed at students interested in complete a major in Japan in a field recognized as pertinent to the support of Aichi’s manufacturing industry.
ELIGIBILITY: This scholarship is open to citizens of Asian countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, East Timor, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, The Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, or Vietnam. AWARD: Recipients will be awarded ¥150,000 JPY per month, transportation to/from Japan, entrance fee, tuition fee and other expenses. DEADLINE: Late March to mid May every year. Learn more here.
The Asian Development Bank/Japan Scholarship Program (JSP) offers about 150 postgraduate scholarships a year for studies in economics, management, science and technology, and other development-related fields.
ELIGIBILITY: This scholarship is open to those who have gained admission to an approved MA/PhD course at a participating academic institution. Candidates should be 35 years old or younger; in good health; with a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent; and have a superior academic record. Upon completion of their study programs, scholars are expected to return to their home country to contribute to its economic and social development. For full eligibility requirements, click here. AWARD: Recipients will be awarded full tuition fees, a monthly allowance for expenses, housing, books and instructional materials, medical insurance and travel. For scholars engaged in research, a special grant may be available for thesis preparation. In special circumstances, computer literacy, preparatory language and other similar courses may be covered under the scholarship. WASEDA UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS
Waseda University Scholarships are given to privately-financed international students. Governmentsponsored international students and students whose tuition is being paid by a foreign government or scholarship organization will not be eligible to apply for the scholarship programs.

JAPAN HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT SCHOLARSHIPS (JDS) FOR DEVELOPING COUNTRIES IN ASIA
The Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship by Japanese Grant Aid (JDS) is to support human resource development of the Japanese grant aid recipient countries.
ELIGIBILITY: This scholarship is open to nationals of Kyrgyz Republic, Myanmar, Laos, Mongolia, Philippines, Republic of Uzbekistan, Republic of Tajikistan, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Cambodia. AWARD: Recipients will be awarded full tuition fees, a monthly subsistence and housing allowance, an allowance for books and instructional materials, medical insurance, and travel expenses. IMF SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM FOR ASIA
The Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Asia (JISPA) is funded by the Government of Japan, administered by the International Monetary Fund. It aims to contribute to institutional capacity building of key macroeconomic management agencies in Asia.
ELIGIBILITY: This scholarship is open to qualified candidates from the following countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Lao P.D.R., Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pacific Island Countries, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam. AWARD: Recipients will be awarded full tuition fees; a monthly stipend (including the housing allowance and medical/accident insurance); one round-trip economy class air-ticket; and a lump-sum allowance to cover visa application costs, testing fees (such as TOEFL), and book-shipping costs. INPEX SCHOLARSHIP
INPEX Scholarship Foundation is offering scholarships for Indonesian students to study postgraduate course of the university in Japan.
ELIGIBILITY: This scholarship is open to international students. AWARD: Recipients will be awarded ¥160,000 JPY per month. Recipients will also be awarded full tuition, travel expense for the academic meetings (up to ¥100,000 JPY for a year), arrival money of ¥60,000 JPY, round trip ticket, and 6 months Japanese language school fee. SCHOLARSHIP OF KANBE ZAIDAN
The Zaidan Foundation is designed to enhance intercultural understanding starting with the international dissemination of the Arab cultural heritage.
ELIGIBILITY: This scholarship is open to all international students. AWARD: Recipients will be awarded ¥500,000 JPY as the maximum for a person. DEADLINE: January. Learn more here.
Kumamoto University offers a tuition waiver system for students with financial difficulties. Full waivers and half waivers are available. These can be applied for the term following entrance to the university, but it is not guaranteed that the fees will be waived. The application period every year is around February for the first semester and around July for the second semester.

ITO INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION EXCHANGE FOUNDATION
The Foundation awards scholarships to foreign students intending to study at a master’s course of a Japanese graduate school.
ELIGIBILITY: Self funding international students who don’t have any other scholarships. AWARD: ¥180,000 JPY per month for a period of 2 years. DEADLINE: 31 October 2020.
International students who are currently studying in Japan can now apply for the Nitori International Scholarship Foundation Grant. Applicants must be enrolled as international students in a bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree program.
ELIGIBILITY: International students who are currently living in Japan. Applicants must have the ability of daily Japanese conversation. AWARD: ¥80,000 JPY per month for one year. DEADLINE: 1 November 2020.
TU RESEARCH-ORIENTED INCOMING STUDENT (ROIS) SCHOLARSHIP
Tohoku University offers scholarships to qualified international students who are accepted under a student exchange agreement between TU and its partner institutions outside Japan. This scholarship is funded by the Japan Student Services Association.

INTERNATIONAL MERIT AWARDS AT TEMPLE UNIVERSITY, JAPAN CAMPUS
Temple University, Japan Campus awards three different merit scholarships every semester to incoming degreeseeking students with demonstrated academic excellence and other exceptional qualifications.
ELIGIBILITY: Scholarship recipients must meet the following criteria: Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher at TUJ and remain enrolled at TUJ on a full-time (12-18 credits) basis in fall and spring semesters (9 credits in summer semester).
