Sotogrande is golf
Sotogrande es sinónimo de golf. Ambos han ido creciendo de la mano a través de los años, desde el comienzo de la urbanización hasta hoy. Este deporte es tan importante, que nadie concibe Sotogrande sin sus campos y todo lo que rodea a esta práctica. Jugar en cualquiera de sus recorridos es un lujo y cualquier entendido en la materia no duda en desplazarse al sur del sur para jugar. Por ello, esta disciplina es uno de las principales motores de la zona. Y, por ello, desde La Revista de Sotogrande, no dudamos en adentrarnos cada número en este mundo para descubrirles lo fascinante que puede llegar a ser. En esta ocasión les invitamos a conocer la nueva apuesta de la zona: El Andalucía Valderrama Masters, con el que Sotogrande se convierte de nuevo en capital del golf durante el mes de noviembre. Hacemos, asimismo, un amplio repaso al pasado verano, con imágenes de los mejores encuentros estivales. Les proponemos, además, una lista de campos en los que, sin duda, jugar al golf es un placer. A la parte más deportiva le sumamos en este número reportajes de vela, con la pasada Regata de Sotogrande, polo, con el Torneo Internacional BMW y con otros contenidos que deseamos resulten de su interés. No todo, sin embargo, es deporte en La Revista de Sotogrande. En esta edición, como en todas, no olvidamos incluir las mejores propuestas de moda, consejos de belleza, cine, libros y un largo etcétera, que configuran un nuevo número con el que, esperamos, disfruten.■
Sotogrande is synonymous with golf. The two have grown hand in hand over the years, from the founding of the resort until today. The sport is so important here that nobody can conceive of Sotogrande without its courses and everything that surrounds this activity. Playing on any of its golf courses is a luxury and anyone who knows about golf is sure to travel to the ‘south of the south’ to play. This makes the sport one of the area’s main driving forces, which is why The Sotogrande Magazine delves into the golf world in every edition, to reveal to you how enthralling it can be. On this occasion we invite you to get to know a new initiative in the area: the Andalucía Valderrama Masters, which will once again make Sotogrande the capital of golf in the month of November. We also provide an extensive review of the summer, with images from the best events of the period. In addition, we propose a list of courses where playing golf is always a great pleasure. The sports component of this edition also includes sailing reports, with the recent Sotogrande Regatta, polo, with the BMW International Polo Tournament and other content that we hope will be of interest. However, it’s not all sport in The Sotogrande Magazine. esde sus inicios, el golf ha desempeñado un importante papel en la historia de la urbanización. Al principio, ésta contaba con un solo club, el Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande, donde los residentes practicaban su deporte favorito durante todo el año. Poco a poco, se fueron sumando nuevos campos, hasta convertir a Sotogrande en lo que es hoy: un paraíso del golf. Don Juan de Borbón junto a José Menéndez, Álvarez Guerra y Alfredo Melian. 1971.

l golf y Sotogrande han estado tan unidos siempre, que no se podría explicar la evolución de la urbanización sin dedicar innumerables capítulos a este deporte. Desde la primera Copa de Jerez hasta la actualidad, la actividad golfística de Sotogrande ha sido inagotable. En torno a ella, se sumaban fiestas, entregas de premios, encuentros entre amigos, etcétera. En muchas ocasiones, además, la urbanización albergó el juego de importante nombres del mundo del golf, como el conocido Severiano Ballesteros o el prestigioso diseñador de campos de golf, Robert Trent Jones, entre otros. También disfrutaron del golf que ofrecía la zona miembros de la realeza. El propio rey Don Juan Carlos o su padre, el Conde de Barcelona, forman, así, parte de una prestigiosa lista que solamente puede poseer un lugar de la talla de Sotogrande.

ince Sotogrande’s early years, golf has played an important role in the history of the resort. At the beginning, the area had just one golf course, Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande, where residents played their favourite sport throughout the year. Gradually new courses were added until Sotogrande became what it is today: a golfing paradise.
G
olf has been such a part of Sotogrande that the development of the resort could not be explained without devoting countless chapters to this sport. From the first Jerez Cup until today, golfing activity in Sotogrande has never ceased. Surrounding the sport there have been parties, prize ceremonies, gatherings of friends, etc. On many occasions, the resort has played host to important names in the golf world, like the renowned Saveriano Ballesteros or the prestigious course designer, Robert Trent Jones, among others. Members of the royal family have also enjoyed the golf offered by the area. King Juan Carlos himself and his father, the Count of Barcelona, are on the prestigious list that only a place of Sotogrande’s stature can boast.
The camera of a much-loved Doro Plana captured many of these important figures playing golf. Today these photographs reach the new generations via the pages of The Sotogrande Magazine in the form of a testimony, narrating in pictures a story that continues to be written day after day. ■

La Gran Reserva: el Sotogrande del siglo XXI

La Gran Reserva es un proyecto para una realidad singular y diferente por varias razones, pero la primera es muy simple: no es una copia. No se “inspira” en una actuación similar construida o publicada. Una propuesta de hábitat sin precedentes, perdurable en el tiempo para resolver las futuras necesidades y avances tecnológicos del siglo XXI con el que RWA reinventa el concepto de calidad de vida para Sotogrande.
L
a idea nace cuando RWA comprende la intención de Sotogrande SA de destinar una colina de 50 hectáreas, rodeada por campos de golf y excepcionales vistas de 360º, para desarrollar un entorno de máxima calidad y acordamos un contenido definido para el concepto “calidad”, devaluado por tantos malos ejemplos con pretensiones de serlo. La Gran Reserva surge entonces como el resultado de estructurar un espacio natural especial, capaz de permitir la coexistencia de sen-

saciones contradictorias, como las aparentemente opuestas de: naturaleza-tecnología, accesibilidadcontrol de flujos vehiculares/peatonales, libertadseguridad, etc. No se trata entonces de apuestas por alta o baja densidad, se trata de proyectos avanzados en los que conviven criterios de conservación de la naturaleza, el paisaje y el microclima, con avances tecnológicos que nos proyectan al futuro. Es lo opuesto a las urbanizaciones controladas con vallas alambradas a ambos lados de una franja árida, emulando ejemplos históricos de Alemania, Austria o Polonia entre otros, tan negativos para la forma-

ción de las personas que en ellas nacen o deben crecer. Este proyecto evoluciona y madura cuando logramos que la tecnología, la seguridad, el control de circulaciones y los principios de ahorro energético alcancen pleno desarrollo y eficiencia sin que se manifiesten evidentes y el diseño resuelve con afortunadas decisiones estos objetivos, con una adaptación fluida a la topografía y los desniveles de la colina. Los accesos desde la carretera a Castellar, con un primer control compartido con el Club de Golf y otro exclusivo situado en el perímetro de La Gran Reserva, conectan con viales que no tienen trazas rectas, como en las urbanizaciones basadas en la ingeniería de la cuadricula. En el interior de esta colina cada flujo está obligado a un recorrido sinuoso pero definido, la mayoría de los tramos terminan en “cul de sac”, para mayor exclusividad y seguridad y tendrán pavimentos diferenciados para facilitar la
comprensión de su uso por los conductores de automóviles o buggies, jinetes y peatones. Los automovilistas tendrán que circular a velocidad reducida por la irregularidad del trazado y no por abultamientos que atraviesan las calzadas, tan antipáticas para las personas, los frenos, los neumáticos y los amortiguadores, los peatones podrán circular protegidos de los automóviles por algo más que un bordillo y tendrán espacios de permanencia y de encuentro sin riesgos de accidentes. Este entorno, con espacios fluidos y perspectivas cambiantes se complementa con equipamientos de escala humana, luminarias distintas a las estandarizadas, bancos en superficies sombreadas y especies de árboles seleccionados según sus fines y funciones, diferenciados además en los diversos viales, para evitar la homogeneidad que induce a paisajes mediocres. Y en medio de este “estudiado” espacio natural, se proyecta crear sistemas de avanzada tecnología, con fibra óptica y cámaras ocultas para el control de accesos y la seguridad, una red Wimax de uso exclusivo, dimensionada para servicios de esa comunidad, acceder a internet o enviar correos electrónicos desde un banco de un vial cualquiera. Los aspectos deportivos están en el proyecto desde el primer esquema, porque es
impensable un desarrollo que ignore la trascendencia de Sotogrande para el golf y la hípica y se evidencian en el diseño intrínseco de los viales, con sendas diferenciadas para animales y buggies y recorridos definidos para estos últimos, que permitirán circular desde cada vivienda hasta cualquier hoyo del campo de golf, como si se tratara de un buggie alquilado en la Casa Club situada enfrente. Es una actuación destinada a quienes, más allá del poder adquisitivo que tengan, comprendan y avalen los nuevos valores que debe tener el hábitat humano, aun cuando se trate de residencias no urbanas.■
LA GRAN RESERVA - RWA Adolfo Waisman es sociodirector de RWA (Ramseyer Waisman Arquitectos), un equipo de profesionales de gran experiencia y capacidad de respuesta, que ha tenido la oportunidad de intervenir para sociedades muy evolucionadas en lo que respecta a concepciones urbanísticas y arquitectónicas y la posibilidad de contrastar en obras construidas los valores añadidos de los desarrollos singulares. El conjunto Ribera del Marlin ha supuesto el primer proyecto arquitectónico de RWA en Sotogrande y La Gran Reserva será su equivalente en el ámbito de los desarrollos urbanísticos. Ambas actuaciones pretenden tener origen en proyectos basados en la calidad del diseño y la ejecución.

La Gran Reserva is a project that will create unique and different reality for several reasons, the first of which is very simple: it is not a copy. It is an unprecedented development, a sustainable project that provides a solution to future needs and technological advances of the 21st Century, with which RWA is reinventing quality of life in Sotogrande.

T
he idea emerged when RWA learned of Sotogrande SA’s intention to allocate a 120-acre hill surrounded by golf courses and exceptional 360-degree views for a topquality development, and we agreed on a definition of the concept of ‘quality’, which has been devalued by so many bad examples in which quality is merely a pretence. La Gran Reserva is the result of careful structuring of a special natural space that allows the coexistence of contradictory sensations like the seemingly opposite concepts of nature and technology, accessibility and vehicle/pedestrian traffic control, freedom and security, etc. It is not, therefore, a question of low or high density; the initiative involves advanced projects which combine nature conservation, scenic and microclimate criteria with technological advances to take it into the future. It is the antithesis of developments surrounded by barbed wire on both sides of an arid strip of land, emulating the historic examples of Germany, Austria or Poland, among others, which are such a negative factor in the formative years of the children born or growing up there. This project evolves and matures when we ensure that technology, security, traffic control and energy saving principles are fully developed and efficient, without becoming obvious to the eye, and with the design meeting these objectives through good decisions, adapting fluidly to the hill’s topography and irregularities. The entrances from the Castellar road, with an initial checkpoint shared with the golf club and another separate one on the La Gran Reserva perimeter, lead to roads and
paths that avoid the straight lines of developments based on grid engineering. On the hill, each route is forced along a sinuous but well-defined path and most sections end in a cul-de-sac to ensure greater exclusivity and security. They will have differentiated paving so that drivers of cars or buggies, riders and pedestrians can easily see what they are intended for. Drivers will have to keep to low speeds because of the irregular layouts and not because of bumps lain across the roads, which are so unpleasant for people, brakes, tyres and suspension. Pedestrians will be able to walk around protected by more than just a curb and they will have spaces to spend time and congregate in without the risk of accidents. This setting, with fluid spaces and changing perspectives, is complemented with human - scale facilities, non-standardized lighting, benches in shady areas and tree species selected according to their purposes and functions, further differentiated on the various roads and paths to avoid the uniformity that creates mediocre landscapes. And in this carefully thought out natural space, the plan is to create advanced technological systems: fibre optics and hidden cameras for access control and security, a Wimax network for exclusive use by residents, for community services and for accessing the Internet or sending e-mails from a bench on any road or path in the development. Sport has been a part of the project since the first sketch, because it would be unthinkable to ignore the importance of golf and horse riding in Sotogrande. This is reflected as an inherent aspect of the road design, with differentiated paths for animals and buggies. The buggy routes will allow golfers to travel
directly from each home to any hole on the golf course, as though it had been hired from the clubhouse located opposite. It is a project aimed at those who, regardless of their purchasing power, have, understand and support the new values that a human habitat must encompass, even when it consists of non-urban residences.■

The Ribera del Marlin complex was RWA’s first architectural project in Sotogrande and La Gran Reserva will be its equal within the sphere of residential development. El GP42 Península Petroleum NH Resorts, del inglés John Basadone y el campeón mundial español Iñaki Castañer, surcó majestuoso las aguas de Sotogrande para alzarse con la victoria de la tradicional regata Copa SotograndeBMW de vela, en la división RI. La cita, organizada por el Real Club Marítimo de Sotogrande, puso en juego, además, la quinta final nacional de la BMW Sailing Cup, en la que el Platú 25 ‘Da Bruno’ se impuso como vencedor. Península Petroleum - NH Resorts domina en aguas de
Sotogrande
U
n año más, Sotogrande se llenó de embarcaciones para disputar la clásica Copa Sotogrande BMW, organizada por El Real Club Marítimo de Sotogrande del 14 al 16 de agosto, y que este año celebraba su décimo primera edición. El viento no quiso acompañar a las embarcaciones en esta importante competición y casi brilló por su ausencia. Así, aunque el primer día proporcionó una buena jornada de regatas, cambió en el segundo y tercer día, haciendo difícil la competición. Dentro de la flota RI, el GP42 «Península Petroleum- NH Resorts» no
tuvo rival y finalizó el encuentro naútico vencedor absoluto, con tres victorias en las tres pruebas disputadas. Tras él, a 7 puntos, se clasificó el local Fendemares, de Enrique de Bernardo y rebautizado «Scapa Polo Lounge» para la cita. La tercera posición la ocupó el cántabro «Merdoc», de Alejandro Díaz, con 15 puntos. El «Swinazo» sólo logró situarse en cuarto lugar. Dentro de la flota RI, además del «Península Petroleum», los ganadores en clases menores fueron el Swinazo en la RI/2 y el Shamwari en la RI/3. Por su parte, en Platú 25 el asunto estuvo claro desde el comienzo de la regata. El «Da Bruno» de Pepe Orba-
neja y Juan Luis Páez dejó constancia de su superioridad obteniendo seis primeros puestos en siete mangas disputadas. La segunda plaza de la manga también fue clara para «One» de María Fiestas, a quien le sobró el tercero del primer día para haber sido rival del vencedor de la final nacional de la BMW Sailing Cup. Finalmente, el tercer lugar fue ocupado por El Trocadero de Mauro Cruz Conde. Un año más, El Real Club Marítimo de Sotogrande fue un gran anfitrión para algunas de las mejores embarcaciones del panorama náutico nacional que hicieron a los amantes del mar disfrutar de tres días de espectáculo.■

Sotogrande
The GP42 Peninsula Petroleum-NH Resorts, crewed by Englishman John Basadone and Spanish world champion Iñaki Castañer, ploughed majestically through Sotogrande waters to win sailing’s customary Sotogrande BMW Cup in the RI class. The event, organised by the Royal Sailing Club of Sotogrande, also comprised the fifth national final of the BMW Sailing Cup, in which the Platu 25 ‘Da Bruno’ was victorious.

nce again, Sotogrande was filled with vessels: boats that were competing in the Sotogrande BMW Cup held by the Royal Sailing Club of Sotogrande from August 14 to 16, now in its eleventh year. The wind did not offer the boats much help in this important competition and it was conspicuous by its absence. Although it made for some good racing on the first day, it changed completely on the second and third day, making the regatta a difficult undertaking. In the RI fleet, the GP42 «Peninsula Petroleum-NH Resorts» was unrivalled and ended the regatta as the overall winner, with three victories in the three races held. Seven points behind, Enrique Bernardo’s local boat Fendemares, renamed «Scapa Polo Lounge» for the event, finished second. Alejandro Díaz’s «Merdoc» Merdoc from Cantabria finished in third place. The «Swinazo» finished fourth.

Once again, the Royal Sailing Club of Sotogrande was a fantastic host for some of the best boats on the national sailing scene, offering lovers of the sea three days of entertainment. ■

Santa María Polo Club FIRMA UNA TEMPORADA PARA EL RECUERDO 2011 será un año muy especial para el organizador del Torneo Internacional de Polo que todos los años se celebra en sus canchas de Sotogrande durante el mes de agosto. Un evento que una temporada más, dejó grandes recuerdos, espectáculo y grandiosidad. Un encuentro deportivo de altura que se fue con el verano, pero que dejó en todos los amantes del polo un buen sabor de boca y un fuerte entusiasmo por lo que vendrá.

ronto llegará el cuarenta aniversario de uno de los torneos más importantes del calendario internacional de polo y Santa María, su club, se prepara para celebrarlo por todo lo alto. La importancia de lo que vendrá, sin embargo, se ve realzada por lo que pasó. Lo que nos dejó el 39º Torneo Internacional BMW de Polo fue tan bueno, desde todo punto de vista, que el entusiasmo para el año que viene es mayor. Cuando un evento combina a la perfección un alto nivel deportivo con idéntica calidad organizativa no se puede pasar por alto, y las ganas de que los meses pasen rápido para volver a vivir la emoción y diversión en el Santa María Polo Club van en aumento. Eso, precisamente, es lo que dejó la pasada edición y lo que genera una mayor expectativa para el 2011. En lo estrictamente deportivo, la 39º edición nos deleitó con la presencia de grandes equipos. Ellerston, una de las organizaciones de polo más importante del mundo, llegó por primera vez a Sotogrande, y su desembarco fue a lo grande. No sólo por el gran barco de su patrón, James Packer, que atracó en estas aguas mediterráneas, sino porque fue el gran campeón de la temporada al llevarse la Copa de Oro. Lo hizo en una final que,

sin lugar a dudas, fue de las mejores de los últimos años en el Santa María Polo Club. Ellerston y su rival, Lechuza Caracas, (otro equipo que llegaba a Sotogrande tras varios años de ausencia) ofrecieron un grandioso espectáculo deportivo que fue el mejor cierre para un gran evento.
En el Mediano y Bajo Handicap, que también colaboran y mucho para que el Torneo Internacional de Polo tenga un 10 goles en lo deportivo, los protagonistas excluyentes fueron I Lovka El Corzo y Ayala Esperanza, el primero ganando la copa de Oro y el segundo llevándose la plata y el bronce. En el Bajo Handicap, los nombres propios a los trofeos los pusieron El Fortín, notable ganador de la Copa de Oro, y Silex, vencedor de las copas de bronce y plata. Los ‘after’ del polo
El oro fue para Ellerston, la Copa de Plata se la llevó Lechuza Caracas y el bronce fue a parar a manos de Ahmibah. Tres grandes campeones para una edición para enmarcar. Mención especial merece el polista uruguayo Santiago Stirling, que siendo el jugador más joven del torneo que organiza el Santa María Polo Club, levantó, por segundo año consecutivo, la Copa de Oro. El año pasado lo hizo con Dos Lunas y este año, con otra gran actuación, se consagró con Ellerston.
Si para llegar a la máxima valorización se necesita además de un buen torneo deportivo, una movida social que este a la misma altura, esta temporada Santa María Polo Club lo logró con el After Polo. El área social, cultural y de restauración que se montó entre las canchas 3 y 2 de Los Pinos en el Santa María Polo Club se robó el verano. Fue el lugar por excelencia de la movida nocturna en Sotogrande y la cita obligada para pasar un buen momento, disfrutar de exposiciones de arte, juntarse con amigos a comer en un lugar muy bien ambientado o bailar con la mejor música del verano hasta altas horas de la madrugada.■

2011 will be a very special year for the organisers of the International Polo Tournament held on Sotogrande’s fields in the month of August. An event that, this year, once again left behind great memories of entertainment and grandeur. A top sporting occasion that was over as the summer ended but which left every polo lover with a good taste in their mouth and a great deal of enthusiasm for what is to come.
Santa María Polo Club ENDS A SEASON TO REMEMBER
T
he fortieth anniversary of one of the most important tournaments in international polo will soon be upon us and Santa María, the organising club, is preparing to host it in style. The importance of what is to come, however, was only emphasised by what has passed. The 39th BMW International Polo Tournament was so good in every respect that the enthusiasm for the coming year is now even greater. When an event combines to perfection a high standard of sport and the same standard of organisation, it cannot be ignored, and there is now a desire for the months to go by quickly in order to relive the excitement and
fun at Santa María Polo Club. This is precisely the feeling the last event left us with, creating greater expectations for 2011. As far as the sport itself was concerned, the 39th tournament delighted us with the presence of some great teams. Ellerston, one of the most important polo setups in the world, arrived in Sotogrande for the first time, and they did so in style. Not just because of the big boat of their Patron, James Packer, mooring in these Mediterranean waters, but also because they were the big champions of the season with their victory in the Gold Cup. The final in which they clinched their title was, undoubtedly, one of the best in recent years at Santa María Polo Club. Ellerston and their rivals, Lechuza Caracas (another team that arrived in Sotogrande after several years’ absence) offered a magnificent sporting spectacle which provided the perfect end to a great event. Gold went to Ellerston, the Silver Cup was lifted by Lechuza Caracas and the bronze fell to Ahmibah. Three great champions in a memorable tournament. The Uruguayan Santiago Stirling deserves a special mention as the youngest player in the tournament organised by Santa María Polo Club, lifting the Gold Cup for the second year running. Last year he did it with Dos Lunas and this year, with another great performance, he was crowned champion with Ellerston. In the Medium and Low-goal competitions, which also contributed a great deal to making the International Polo Tournament a first-
rate sporting occasion, the prominent teams were I Lovka El Corzo and Ayala Esperanza, with the former winning the Gold Cup and the latter winning the silver and bronze. To earn top marks what is needed is a social scene on a par with the sporting occasion, and this season Santa María Polo achieved this with its After Polo. The social, cultural and hospitality area set up between Los Pinos’ Fields 3 and 2 at Santa María Polo Club stole the show this summer. It was the focal point for Sotogrande’s nightlife and the perfect place for having a good time, enjoying art exhibitions, meeting friends for lunch in very well air-conditioned premises or dancing to the best music of the summer until the early hours of the morning.■

Indio, Sombra, Pepito y Cafelito. Estos cuatro nombres quizás no les digan nada, pero para varios chicos que padecen algún tipo de minusvalía uno de estos cuatro caballos no es sólo su mejor amigo, sino que probablemente también sea su mejor terapeuta. La hipoterapia consiste en la utilización de equinos para tratar a personas con discapacidad física o psíquica, ya se ha consagrado como una de las terapias más beneficiosas para los niños y, en Sotogrande, cuenta con un centro de referencia.

uchos son los tratamientos existentes para ayudar a quienes tienen algún tipo de discapacidad, pero no todos están en disposición de ofrecer tan buenos resultados como los que se obtienen practicando la equitación. Y es que en un entorno natural y montado a caballo, el niño experimenta una importante mejoría, tanto en su desarrollo físico como en su estado emocional.
por la Vida Tan encomiable trabajo es llevado a cabo por tan sólo tres personas. Un fisioterapeuta, una caballista y una pedagoga y técnica de equitación se encargan a diario de todas las sesiones, de las gestiones administrativas, del mantenimiento y hasta del cuidado de los caballos y su alimentación. Sin embargo, el mismísimo director de la Fundación no duda en echarles una mano cuando es necesario. Un grupo de adultos que acude a dos sesiones a la semana es la excepción, ya que el grueso de los pacientes del centro son menores de cinco años. La mayoría de ellos sufren parálisis cerebral, aunque también hay jóvenes espectro autistas, con síndrome de down, con espina bífida y algunos otros que adolecen una enfermedad aún sin diagnosticar. Debido a la corta edad de los discapacitados que acuden a tratamiento equino, uno de los objetivos principales
de las actividades es potenciar la integración con sus familias. Por ello, es recomendable que los padres se involucren y participen en la terapia. Con ese fin, el centro organiza con frecuencia jornadas donde las familias de los chicos pueden compartir experiencias, plantear dudas e intercambiar consejos. Casi todos los niños vienen a nivel particular, ya que la mayoría de las asociaciones no cuentan con transporte propio para poder llevarlos. Es ese precisamente uno de los objetivos más ansiados por el centro: conseguir una subvención para poder pagar un medio de transporte y un chófer que pueda desplazar a los chicos desde las respectivas asociaciones hasta la Fundación. Hasta que esto sea una realidad, este centro sigue su marcha con paso firme, dibujando, cada día, nuevas sonrisas en los rostros de pequeños grandes jinetes.■
Centro De Hipoterapia
En las instalaciones del Santa María Polo Club, en Sotogrande, se encuentra el que es hoy en día el centro de referencia en la hipoterapia. A esta fundación sin ánimo de lucro acuden más de 75 personas discapacitadas. Al menos una vez por semana, los participantes siguen sesiones de media hora: los primeros quince minutos se dedican siempre a la rehabilitación y a la preparación por parte del fisioterapeuta, y durante el último cuarto de hora se monta a caballo.

These four names might not mean anything to you, but for many youngsters who suffer from some kind of disability one of these four horses is not just their best friend but also probably their best therapist. Riding therapy consists of using horses to treat people with physical or mental disabilities; it has already been consolidated as one of the most beneficial forms of therapy for children and, in Sotogrande, it has a leading centre.

here are many treatments that help people who have some kind of disability, but not all of them offer such good results as the ones that are obtained from riding. In a natural setting and on the back of a horse, children experience significant improvements, both in their physical development and their emotional state.

Owing to the young age of these children with disabilities undergoing riding therapy, one of the main aims of the activities is to promote integration with their families. To do so, parents are urged to get involved and take part in the therapy. To this end, the centre often organises days on which the kids’ family members can share experiences, ask questions and exchange tips.
Riding therapy centre
Santa María Polo Club in Sotogrande is now home to a leading riding therapy centre. Over 75 people with disabilities visit this non-profit foundation. At least once a week, the participants take part in half-hour sessions: the first fifteen minutes are always devoted to rehabilitation and preparation by the physiotherapists and then the final quarter of an hour is devoted to riding. This valuable work is done by just three people. A physiotherapist, an expert rider and a riding instructor and specialist conduct the sessions and carry out the admin-

istrative and maintenances tasks, and they even look after and feed the horses. The director of the foundation himself also helps out when necessary. A group of adults that attend two sessions per week are the exception to the rule, given that the bulk of the centre’s patients are under five years of age. Most of them suffer from cerebral palsy, although there are also youngsters with autism, Down’s
Almost all of the children attend the centre individually, since most associations lack their own transport. This is precisely one of the centre’s most coveted objectives: to obtain a subsidy in order to pay for a means of transport and a driver to bring the children from their respective associations to the foundation. Until this happens, the centre continues to make solid progress, with new smiles everyday on the faces of some great little riders.■

Su equipo, XV Rocks, hizo su presentación oficial en el Campo de Rugby y a partir de ahora los objetivos y los tiempos se intensifican. Bajo la batuta del irlandés Eoin Costigan, quien jugo hasta hace muy poco en equipos de primer nivel en España e incluso integro la selección española, XV Rocks tiene la mira puesta en la próxima Liga Súper Ibérica.

n su primera experiencia como entrenador, y con mucha ilusión, Costigan trabaja con un plantel de jugadores que proviene de los equipos de rugby del Campo de Gibraltar. Su idea es integrarlos a una plantilla definitiva, que contará también con rugbistas extranjeros, para afrontar la exigente Liga Súper Ibérica. “Tengo mucha ilusión porque me parece un proyecto muy interesante. El rugby en el Campo de Gibraltar tiene mucho potencial y quizás le ha faltado organización a lo largo de los últimos años. Creo que con un proyecto como el de Rocks se puede ilusionar a la gente y lograr cosas muy buenas”, expresó Costigan a La Revista de Sotogrande. “Consideramos muy importante trabajar con los equipos y jugadores de la zona. Esta es nuestra primera actividad oficial (se refiere al Torneo Ciudad de San Roque) y a partir de ahora elaboraremos un intensivo programa para la temporada que nos permita tener un contacto fluido con los equipos y jugadores de la zona y lograr una organización acorde para trabajar”, agregó. El plan de trabajo al cual se refiere el coach irlandés estará conformado por un programa de entrenamientos físicos
especiales con los jugadores de la zona (previsto para antes de Navidad) y una serie de eventos, similares al Torneo Ciudad de San Roque, para trabajar, desde el mes de marzo aproximadamente, de cara a la Super Ibérica con un plantel definitivo que integre los jugadores seleccionados del Campo de Gibraltar y los rugbistas que lleguen del extranjero. “Tanto por la calidad como por la cantidad de la plantilla, va a ser necesario fichar a jugadores extranjeros”, explica Costigan. “Las franquicias que formarán parte de la Súper Ibérica están basadas en equipos de División de Honor A, la máxima categoría del rugby español. Rugby Rocks tiene el inconveniente de no contar en la zona del Campo de Gibraltar con un equipo suficientemente fuerte como para basar la franquicia exclusivamente en un club, por tal motivo tendremos que fichar rugbistas extranjeros que principalmente vendrán de Argentina e Irlanda, dos potencias a nivel mundial”. Para dicha “captación” es fundamental el apoyo del argentino Gonzalo Quesada, ex internacional de Los Pumas y actual entrenador de Francia. Quesada colabora activamente con

XV Rocks take to the field The 6th Ciudad de San Roque Tournament has marked a turning point in the short but intense life of the Rugby Rocks franchise. Their team, XV Rocks, were officially presented at the Rugby Ground and from now on the objectives and deadlines will intensify. Under the leadership of the Irishman Eoin Costigan, who until recently played for some of Spain’s top teams and even represented Spain, XV Rocks have their sights set on the forthcoming Liga Super Ibérica.

n his first experience as a coach and with a great deal of enthusiasm, Costiga is working on this first stage with a line-up of players from Campo de Gibraltar’s rugby teams, with the idea of including them in a permanent squad, which will also comprise foreign rugby layers, to confront the demanding Liga Super Ibérica. “I’m really excited because I think it’s a very interesting project. Rugby has a lot of potential in Campo de Gibraltar and there has perhaps been a lack of organisation in recent years. I think that a project like the Rocks initiative will excite people and achieve very good things”, Costigan said to the Sotogrande Magazine. “We believe that working with local teams and players is very important. This is our first official activity [referring to the Ciudad de San Roque Tournament] and from now on we will prepare an intensive programme for the season so that we have good communication with local teams and players and to create the right working environment”, he added.

The plan that the Irish coach refers to will comprise a special physical conditioning programme for local players (envisaged for before Christmas) and a number of events, similar to the Ciudad de San Roque Tournament, to work towards forming a permanent squad for the Super Ibérica starting in March, made up of players selected from Campo de Gibraltar and overseas. “Both for the quality and quantity of the squad, we will have to sign foreign players”, Costigan explains. “The franchises that will make up the Super Ibérica league are based on teams from the División de Honor A, Spanish rugby’s top flight. Rugby Rocks’ problem is that in the Campo de Gibraltar area there is no single team that is strong enough for the franchise to be based exclusively on one club, which is why we will have to sign foreign rugby players who will come primarily from Argentina and Ireland, two world forces in the sport”.
For this ‘recruitment’, the support of the Argentine Gonzalo Quesada, a former Pumas international and current France coach, is essential. Quesada is collaborating actively with Rugby Rocks and, in Costigan’s view, his contribution “is very important because he’s a person with a wealth of experience in topflight rugby. We are going to draw on his knowledge in various fields, such as strategic planning for training and preparation for the season and match analysis, and since he has a lot of contacts in France and Argentina he will also help us to select foreign players”. XV Rocks have taken to the field and with the hard work and effort of their members the dream of competing in the demanding Liga Super Ibérica has now come true. ■

Han pasado ya diez años desde que un jovencísimo Dani Pedrosa debutara en el mundo del motociclismo. Su afán de superación y su constancia lo han llevado a alcanzar la cumbre de esta disciplina y a competir en MotoGP con los más grandes. Pese al parón ocasionado tras fracturarse la clavícula en los entrenamientos del Gran Premio de Japón, Dani Pedrosa se muestra ilusionado. En una entrevista para La Revista de Sotogrande, el piloto asegura que, aunque el mundial está resuelto, seguirá el trabajo en la moto para llegar en buena forma a los test del invierno, en los que empezará a trabajar pensando en la temporada que viene.

¿Cómo se siente tras la caída en el Gran Premio de Japón? “Tras la operación, inicié la rehabilitación de forma inmediata. La intervención fue bien y la placa está bien fijada, de modo que el mayor problema no es la clavícula, sino la rigidez del cuello y la región de los hombros. He estado recibiendo masajes y realizando ejercicios con mi fisioterapeuta y seguiré con ello. El campeonato ya está decidido y hay que asumirlo. Nuestro objetivo ahora es continuar el trabajo en la moto para llegar en buena forma a los test del invierno, en los que empezaremos a trabajar pensando en la temporada que viene”. Lleva ya cinco años en la categoría de MotoGP. De todas las motos que ha tenido en este tiempo, ¿con cuál se queda? “Con la primera, la que tuve el año que debuté en MotoGP. Era una moto muy bien hecha, con un motor que iba perfecto, y aunque todo el mundo decía que era una moto demasiado grande para mí, me adapté y pudimos hacer una temporada muy constante. Estuvimos luchando por el Mundial hasta el final siendo mi primer año en la categoría”.
Si pudiera elegir, ¿cómo sería su moto ideal? “Potente, ágil, rápida y precisa en el paso por curva, ligera… Aunque todos los que competimos sabemos que la moto perfecta o ideal nunca existe”. ¿Cuál ha sido la victoria que más le ha marcado en su vida? “Diría que Sudáfrica 2004, con la Honda de 250cc. Cambiábamos de categoría, tuvimos un invierno muy duro recuperándome de los dos tobillos rotos, y casi sin entrenar demostramos que estábamos ahí. Ese año ganamos el Mundial a la primera y al siguiente repetimos”. ¿Y qué derrota ha sido la más amarga? "Por decir una reciente, quizás la de Laguna Seca de este año. Llegábamos muy bien preparados, hicimos unos buenos entrenamientos y cuando iba liderando la carrera, sin previo aviso, me caí. Fue una pena". De todos los tiempos, ¿cuál es su piloto de referencia? “De pequeño siempre me fijé en Mick Doohan. Me gustaba por su estilo pilotando, y por el carisma y determinación que tenía”.
De los nuevos pilotos que están entrando, ¿a quién ve en moto GP en un tiempo? “Es muy difícil saberlo, porque hay que adaptarse a los cambios de categoría. Está claro que Marc Márquez, Nico Terol y Pol Espargaró están yendo muy rápido, así que si trabajan duro y saben aprovechar sus oportunidades, pueden llegar algún día a MotoGP.” Muchos consideran a Valentino el mejor de la historia, ¿qué opina? “Sus títulos mundiales están ahí y tienen muchísimo mérito. Valentino tiene gran experiencia y es un piloto muy completo. Es muy inteligente sobre la moto y sabe en cada momento qué debe hacer. Se ha adaptado siempre a los cambios de cilindrada, de normativas, es un personaje que se va reinventando constantemente. Para mí, sin duda, es el mejor al que me he enfrentado”. ¿Cuál es su circuito preferido? “El Circuito de Jerez”. Este año España estrena circuito, ¿cómo ha encontrado Aragón? “Es un circuito bonito, pero también complicado. Es un trazado bastante técnico, con algunas curvas muy difíciles

Cuando corro en Jerez me siento en casa en las que tienes que trazar realmente bien, con varias curvas ciegas en las que tienes que buscar referencias fuera de la pista. El asfalto ofrece un buen agarre y la configuración del cambio también tiene una gran importancia para marcar un buen tiempo. Creo que el Gran Premio ha sido un éxito de organización y de público; ha sido la primera carrera del año en la que se ha visto el circuito completamente lleno. Lo he disfrutado mucho”.
Jerez con el mundial es una fiesta motera. Miles de aficionados acuden para verlo correr, ¿se nota ese cariño cuando uno acelera al máximo? “Desde luego. Como dices, en Jerez, en curvas como Nieto y Peluqui, realmente tienes el público muy encima y se siente mucho su apoyo. Es un circuito con mucha tradición, con un trazado estupendo y, al ser siempre la primera carrera de la temporada en Europa, sientes más que nunca que llegas a casa”.
¿Qué parte de su éxito se lo debe a su equipo? “Una muy importante, porque si bien es cierto que es uno mismo el que se sube a la moto, sin la ayuda de todo el equipo y toda la gente que hay detrás, no llegarías a ningún lado. Hemos pasado momentos difíciles, pero debo decir que mi equipo nunca se ha rendido. Se trata de ir todos a una y es necesario rodearte de gente de confianza con la que complementarse, ya que uno sólo no hace nada”. Dejando las motos a un lado. En Sotogrande el deporte del golf es muy importante, ¿le gusta esta disciplina? "Nunca lo he probado, pero considero que debe ser complicado." Ten years have gone by since a very young Dani Pedrosa made his debut in the motorcycling world. His desire to improve and perseverance have taken him to the top of his sport, competing alongside the greatest riders in MotoGP. Despite having to stop riding after fracturing his collarbone while training for the Japanese Grand Prix, Dani Pedrosa remains positive. In an interview with La Revista deSotogrande, the rider asserts that, although the world championship has been decided, he will keep working on his bike to go into the winter tests in good form, when he will start to prepare for the coming season.

ow do you feel after your fall in the Japanese Grand Prix? “I began rehabilitation immediately after surgery. The operation went well and the plate is firmly in place, so the biggest problem isn’t the collarbone but the stiffness in my neck and shoulder area. I’ve been having massages and doing exercises with my physiotherapist and I’ll keep going. The championship’s been decided and you have to accept it. Our aim now is to keep working on the bike to go into the winter tests in good form, when we’ll start to prepare for the coming season”. You’ve been in the MotoGP category for five years. Of all the bikes you’ve had in that time, which are you most fond of? “The first one, which I made by debut in the MotoGP with. It was a very well-made motorcycle, with a very good engine, and although everyone said it was too big for me, I adapted well and we had a very consistent season. We were fighting for the World Championship until the end in my first year in the category”. If you could choose, what would your ideal motorbike be like? “Powerful, agile, quick and accurate on the bends, light... but everyone who competes knows that the perfect or ideal bike doesn’t exist”. What has been your most memorable victory? “I would say South Africa 2004, with the 250cc Honda. We changed category, I had a really tough winter recovering from two broken ankles, and with hardly any training we showed that we were up to scratch. That year we won the World Championship at the first attempt and we did it again the following year”.
And what defeat was the most painful? The most recent was perhaps Laguna Seca this year. We were well prepared, we trained well and I was leading the race when I fell without warning. It was a shame.

Jerez and the world championship is a motorcycling festival. Do you notice this affection when you’re accelerating at full throttle? “Of course. Like you say, in Jerez, on bends like Nieto and Peluqui you have the crowd right on top of you and you really feel their support. It’s a circuit with a lot of tradition, with a fantastic layout and, as it’s always the first race of the season in Europe, you feel like you’ve arrived home more than ever”.
Among the new up-and-coming riders, who do you think will make it into the MotoGP? “It’s difficult to know, because you have to know how to adapt to changes in category. Clearly Marc Márquez, Nico Terol and Pol Espargaró are very quick, so if they work hard and know how to take their chances they could make it into the MotoGP one day”. Many believe that Valentino is the alltime best; what do you think? “His world titles are there and they are a huge achievement. Valentino has a wealth of experience and he is a very complete rider. He’s very intelligent on the bike and always knows what he has to do. He has always adapted to the changes in cylinder capacity, in regulations; he’s a person who reinvents himself continuously. He’s definitely the best I’ve raced against”. What is your favourite circuit? “The Jerez Circuit”. This year Spain has a new circuit; what did you think of Aragón? “It’s a nice circuit but it’s also complicated. It’s a pretty technical track with some very difficult bends where you have to take a really good line, with several blind bends on which you have to find points of reference off the track. The surface has good grip and gear
How much of your success is thanks to your team? “It’s very important, because although it’s you who gets on the bike, without the help of the whole team, all the people behind you, you wouldn’t get anywhere. We’ve gone through difficult times, but I must say my team has never given up. You have to work together and you have to surround yourself with people you trust, because won’t get anywhere on your own”. Leaving motorbikes aside, in Sotogrande golf is very important; do you like this sport? "I’ve never played, but it looks difficult." A lot of youngsters admire you and dream of being like you; what advice would you give them to reach the top? “That if they really want something, to fight for it with determination”. Lastly, what is Dani Pedrosa’s greatest dream? “To be the World MotoGP Champion”.■

¡Ponte en forma corriendo! 1ª parte. Si hay un deporte que en los últimos años goza de una gran popularidad ese es sin duda el “running”, o lo que es lo mismo, la carrera popular. Miles de personas se ven impulsadas cada año a participar en numerosos maratones, en algunos casos con una buena preparación física de base, pero en muchos otros casos, con escasa o mas bien ninguna preparación. Sin bien es cierto que la carrera es unos de los gestos más naturales para el hombre como especie animal, esto no significa que su práctica no conlleve cierto riesgo para la salud si no se hace de la forma apropiada.
Podemos decir que la manera ideal de empezar a correr es hacerlo de forma controlada y progresiva. 1.-CONTROLADA. PENSAMOS QUE ES IMPORTANTE CIERTA SUPERVISIÓN DE PERSONAL CUALIFICADO PARA GARANTIZAR QUE SE CUMPLAN UNOS “REQUISITOS MÍNIMOS” QUE HAGAN DE ESTA ACTIVIDAD ALGO SALUDABLE Y NO UN CALDO DE CULTIVO DE TODO TIPO DE LESIONES.
Los dos principales factores que todo corredor debería conocer antes de empezar a correr son: a) Si cumple un nivel mínimo de condición física para poder asimilar el impacto articular que supone la carrera. b) Si la técnica de carrera es correcta o al menos cumple con unos requisitos medianamente aceptables. Aunque ya hemos comentado que la carrera es una capacidad “natural” en el hombre, si es cierto que durante las últimas décadas, un estilo de vida completamente sedentario ha mermado considerablemente dicha capacidad. El estado físico actual del hombre occidental medio es bastante mediocre: sobrepeso, problemas estructurales de columna, pies, rodillas, bajo nivel de resistencia, fuerza, flexibilidad, acortamientos musculares, etc., son anomalías que nos condicionan negativamente para la práctica segura del running. A esto debemos sumar el hecho de que correr supone un impacto articular reiterado sobre pies, tobillos, rodillas, cadera y columna y si el corredor carece de la condición física necesaria o tiene fallos importantes en su técnica de carrera, el riesgo de lesiones se multiplica de forma exponencial. Consideramos que ante todo, la práctica del running debe hacerse de la forma más segura posible. Independientemente de la consecución de otros objetivos, debemos garantizar que el corredor conserve y mejore su salud, tanto presente como futura, y para ello es importante la supervisión de personal cualificado. Para poder empezar de forma controlada, nos bastaría con realizar un screening inicial en el que se valora el estado inicial de forma física. Este screening inicial constaría de una batería de pruebas que dependerán del perfil de corredor. En algunos casos, serán pruebas que el mismo corredor podrá hacer por su cuenta y en otros, será necesario acudir a profesionales para la realización de pruebas de esfuerzo o ergometrias, estudios nutricionales o estudios de pisada. Lo ideal seria complementar este screening inicial con un análisis de la técnica de carrera.■

Thousands of people feel compelled every year to take part in road runs, in some cases with a good level of fitness, but in many other cases with little or no training. Although it is true that running is one of the most natural things humans can do as an animal species, this does not mean it is free from health risks if it is not done properly.

We believe that, first and foremost, running must be done in the safest way possible. Regardless of other objectives that are pursued, runners must preserve and improve both present and future health, and to do so supervision from a qualified professional is important. In order to start in a controlled manner, all that is needed is an initial screening to assess initial fitness levels. This initial screening would involve a series of tests that will depend on the profile of the runner. In some cases the runner may carry out the tests him/herself and in other cases a professional must be consulted to do ergometric tests, nutritional analyses and foot fall assessments. Ideally, the initial screening is complemented with an analysis of running technique. ■

Growth and expansion
USP Marbella Hospital currently provides healthcare for patients from all over the Costa de Sol and Campo de Gibraltar. As part of this effort to be closer to their patients and offer them a more convenient service, USP La Bahía Hospital project emerged. The new hospital will open in 2011 at the Palmones Business Park (Los Barrios) and will fill a historical gap, given that the area, whose potential as a driving force of the economy is evident, does not currently have a high-quality private hospital to meet the needs of the population.■

arie Bourgeois fue la encargada de capitanear este gran proyecto. Lo hizo con especial ilusión debido a que era el último que afrontaba antes de ser madre. Quizás sea, precisamente por eso, por lo que el trabajo resultó tan excepcional. Así, junto a su equipo, y con el apoyo de los propietarios, lograron transformar íntegramente el estilo de este hogar y convertirlo en una casa digna de museo; un proyecto con ‘alma’.
Tras reunirse con la familia y que ésta les diese total libertad para materializar su sueño, los expertos se pusieron a crear. El desafío era obtener un lugar moderno, casi artístico, con detalles de alta decoración, joven, con mucha personalidad y en el que la luz fuese una de las grandes protagonistas. Se buscaba, además, que fuese un auténtico hogar para una familia con niños por lo que el diseño no podía restar un ápice de comodidad y funcionalidad a la casa.

Con estas premisas comenzó el proyecto. La primera estancia que se transformó fue el salón, el centro de la casa, con grandes ventanales y unas dimensiones extraordinarias con las que los decoradores pudieron jugar y lograr un espacio de lujo. De entre las diversas piezas escogidas, destaca la elección de unos sofás de cuero de la firma Casadesus estructurados en varios módulos con una extensión de más de cinco metros.

Una apuesta completada con una preciosa alfombra de pelo de pony de Caribou, también en tono oscuro, y una mágica lámpara colgante en cristal de murano denominada Nastro por la firma Andrómeda. El segundo ambiente de la habitación, separado del salón por la inmensa chimenea, es el comedor. En él, encontramos un espacio exclusivo, formado por una mesa de cristal y cromado de Cavalli acompañada de un juego de sillas de Porada en tela roja que dan al lugar un toque colorido muy elegante, a la vez que juvenil y divertido. La pieza estrella de la estancia es, sin embargo, una magnífica lámpara de Cavalli denominada Grand Tour Mistral; el sueño de cualquier amante de la decoración. Descanso de lujo
Aunque la villa posee un gran número de habitaciones y sería imposible detallarlas todas, el dormitorio principal exige una parada obligada tanto por su belleza, como por su amplitud

y luminosidad. En él, la interiorista de Patricia Darch, Marie Bourgeois, y su equipo, optaron de nuevo por un estilo moderno, sin recargar y en el que el diseño encontrara su máxima expresión. Para ello, eligieron una cama de forma redondeada en cuero blanco de la casa italiana Presotto, que vistieron con una elegante colcha creada por ellas con telas Plazza, de Casamance. Y, para obtener un espacio con formas circulares, incorporaron al dormitorio diferentes detalles ovalados, como las mesitas de noche, el puff o un precioso espejo de Glas. El cuarto diseñado para los invitados es otro de los lugares mágicos de esta casa de ensueño. De las diversas características que lo definen, cabe subrayar su luz, potenciada por los interioristas con el uso de tonos blancos y platas. Así, encontramos una cama, de Presotto, de líneas muy vanguardistas, con mesitas de noche integradas en una pieza, y creada en cuero de cocodrilo estampado. Llama la aten-
ción, asimismo, la belleza de la colcha, que cubre el mueble; una creación en blanco y plata llamada Casino Blackjack y perteneciente a la firma Andrew Martin. Otro de los espacios singulares de esta estupenda villa sotograndina lo encontramos en la segunda planta. Se trata de un rincón chill out concebido como área de descanso en el paso de las habitaciones. Esta idea se materializa en dos cómodos chaise longues color turquesa de Busnelli y una práctica lámpara de Vibia en forma de arco, ideal para tardes de lectura. Diseño y diversión
Para terminar, es imprescindible visitar la sala de televisión de la casa. Un espacio creado para el disfrute de toda la familia y en el que se percibe, además del gusto decorativo de los interioristas, el nivel de trabajo desarrollado por Nicholas Darch y su equipo en materia de iluminación, acústica, domótica, etcétera. Entre los detalles que conforman la

estancia, es importante resaltar el tapizado de la pared, realizado en poli piel acolchado a dos tonos con el objetivo de mejorar la acústica y potenciar la insonorización con el exterior. De igual forma, hay que subrayar la originalidad de los muebles, módulos de diferentes formas que configuran un puzzle y dan a la sala un aspecto original y divertido. nterior designer Marie Bourgeois was the inspiration behind this wonderful project. She undertook it with her usual enthusiasm and panache, especially as she developed a very good understanding with the owners which is such an important factor for a designer. Perhaps it was precisely this that led to such an exceptional result. Alongside her team and with the support of the owners, she managed to completely transform the style and concept of the villa. The challenge was to design a modern and artistic home with haute d茅cor details yet with a young and fresh approach. a vast space with a lot of personality and clever lighting playing a leading role. The aim was also to create a comfortable designer family home, practicality being absolutely necessary with young children, so comfort and space was to be a top priority.

Grandeur
Delighted to be given the freedom to project her ideas within these parameters, the project was now underway. The first room to be transformed was the living room located in the very centre of the house and surrounded by windows of such extraordinary dimensions that the interior designers had to take steps to filter some of the light. This was resolved by using huge electrically operated Japanese panels supplied by Silent Gliss as window dressings. The selected furnishings include leather Casadesus sofas comprising several modules and measuring over five metres in length. The scene was rounded off with a wonderful Caribou skin rug, also in a dark tone, and a magical ‘Nastro’ hanging lamp in Murano glass by Andromeda. The second part of the room, separated from the living area by an immense fireplace, is the dining area. This delightful space includes a Cavalli glass and chrome table accompanied by a set of Porada chairs from Casadesus in a red fabric to add a very elegant, and yet young and fun touch of colour. The star piece in the room, however, is the magnificent Grand Tour Mistral lamp by Cavalli, the dream object of any décor lover. Relaxing in luxury
Although the villa has a large number of bedrooms and it would be impossible to describe them all in detail, the master bedroom cannot be overlooked owing to its beauty,

size and light. Here the designers, Marie Bourgeois and her team, opted once again for a modern and minimalistic style, creating an example of design shown throughout the villa. To do so they chose a circular bed upholstered in white leather by the Italian firm Presotto, adding an elegant bedcover made by Tapeceria Mediterraneo and designed in Plazza fabrics by Casamance. To create a space following the curved lines of the bed, various oval-shaped details like the bedside tables, a pouf and a beautiful Glas mirror were added. The guest room is another magical part of this dream home. Its various distinguishing features include abundant light, set off by the interior designers with a white and silver tone palette. This room boasts a modern Presotto bed with very avant-garde lines including built-in bedside tables and upholstered in a crocodile skin effect tooled leather. The beauty of the bedcover is striking: a creation in white and silver with fabric by the name of Casino Blackjack, by Andrew Martin. Another unique space in this wonderful Sotogrande villa is located on its second floor. This area was designed as a space for relaxation in the hallway between the bedrooms. The decor takes the form of two comfortable turquoise chaises longues by Busnelli and a fabulous curved standing lamp by Vibia. It is an ideal space to escape for relaxing or reading. Design and fun
To complete our tour of this lovely home we had to include the cinema room which
simply must be visited. This space created for the enjoyment of the whole family showcases both the decorative taste of the interior designers and the high standard of work carried out by Nicholas Darch and his team when it comes to lighting, acoustics, home automation etc. Together with the complete installation of this project, no designer can create such a polished finish without the invaluable back up of a hard working team of specialists in their field. The details that make up the cinema room include the upholstery on the walls, made from padded faux two-tone leather in order to improve acoustics and enhance soundproofing. Equally, the furniture is highly original comprising of modules in various shapes that form a puzzle and give the room a unique and fun appearance. The furniture includes a corner sofa with a chaise longue in grey fabric by Casadesus, ten ‘Puzzle’ pouffes in black and white designed by the interior designers and made by Emmei, and two ultra-modern Presotto armchairs in red, perfect for enjoying a good film session. These decoration and design elements are just a small sample of everything this great Sotogrande villa has to offer. The owners were so delighted with the result and Patricia Darch and her team are proud to add another success to their extensive decoration portfolio.■

eclaradas de Interés Turístico Internacional y organizadas por la Sociedad de Carreras de Caballos de Sanlúcar, las carreras de caballos de Sanlúcar son únicas. Su celebración no tiene una fecha fija, es la bajamar la que determina cuándo correrán los ‘pura sangre’ sobre la arena mojada por la mar. Lo que sí se repite cada temporada es el espectáculo, la emoción y la belleza del galopar de los caballos en este hipódromo natural, situado sobre las playas del mar Mediterráneo próximas a la desembocadura del río Guadalquivir y teniendo como fondo el incomparable Coto de Doñana.

El encuentro lleva celebrándose 165 años. Su origen estuvo en las competiciones informales que realizaban los dueños del ganado equino que era utilizado para el transporte de pescado desde el antiguo puerto de Bajo de Guía hasta los mercados locales y de las de poblaciones cercanas. En 1845 se realizaron las primeras carreras de caballos reglamentadas, con normas de aptitud, peso y velocidad. Hoy, la competición no tiene nada que ver con antaño y es, además de una práctica deportiva,
una cita de alto valor cultural. Actualmente, las carreras se realizan en dos tandas, determinadas por la tabla de mareas. El primer ciclo consiste en tres días de competición. Catorce jornadas después llega la segunda parte del torneo, la de mayor tradición y con una duración también de tres días. La competición reúne a los mejore jinetes, con 23 carreras para profesionales (denominados jockeys),
aficionados (gentlemen) y amazonas. La cita recibe, además, la visita de los mejores equinos, que recorren el trazado ante la mirada atenta de más de 30.000 visitantes. Un público afortunado que acude a Sanlúcar para contemplar el encuentro, disfrutar del lugar y amenizar su estancia degustando los famosos langostinos de Sanlúcar, acompañados de la típica manzanilla de la tierra.■

Watching the horses trot on the wet sand at low tide, with the sun setting, surrounded by the natural beauty of Doñana, makes the races a unique experience and an unmissable August event in the Cadiz province.

ith International Tourist Attraction status, the Sanlúcar horse races organised by the Sanlúcar Horseracing Society are unique. They are not held on a set date; the low tide determines when the ‘thoroughbreds’ will race on the sand wetted by the sea. But one thing that is repeated every year is the spectacle, the excitement and the beauty of the galloping horses at this natural racecourse, located on the beaches of the Mediterranean Sea close to the mouth of the River Guadalquivir, with the incomparable Doñana nature reserve as its backdrop.
The event has been held for the past 165 years. It began with informal competitions among the owners of equine livestock, used as transport for fish from the old Bajo de Guía harbour to the local markets and nearby population centres. In 1845 the first regulated horse races took place, with rules for ability, weight and speed. Now the competition is nothing like it used to be and in addition to a sporting event it is also an occasion of great cultural value. These days the races are held in two batches, determined by the tide table. The first round
consists of three days of competition. Fourteen days later the second part of the tournament, the most steeped in tradition, is held, also lasting three days. The competition attracts the best riders, with 23 races for professionals (referred to as jockeys), amateurs (gentlemen) and ladies. The event also involves the best horses, which gallop around the course in front of over 30,000 enthralled visitors. The crowds flock to Sanlúcar to watch the races, enjoy the place and sample some of the famous Sanlúcar prawns, accompanied by a glass of the local manzanilla.■

Las mejores cometas invadieron el cielo de la meca del viento, Tarifa, para lidiar un apasionante encuentro: El J&B Masters of Kite. Por primera vez en la historia, la playa de Valdevaqueros recibió la visita de los mejores kitesurfistas del mundo, que se dieron cita para luchar por la gran final de esta competición. Espectáculo en estado puro no apto para enfermos cardiacos.

arifa se convirtió por unos días en capital mundial del kitesurf. Nadie quiso perderse la oportunidad de ver a los mejores riders jugar con las olas y el viento para completar los mejores trucos de las tres especialidades que conforman este deporte: freestyle, Racing y Olas. La cita, que se desarrolló del 2 al 5 de septiembre en Valdevaqueros, dejó para el recuerdo imágenes inéditas con saltos de hasta doce metros de altura. Las condiciones meteorológicas apostaron por el encuentro y facilitaron trucos de vértigo gracias a vientos de hasta treinta nudos. La final contó con la participación de, nada menos, que los diez mejores kitesurfers de todos los tiempos con los seis mejores del panorama nacional. Entre los riders que conformaron
este impresionante plantel, cabe destacar la presencia del local Álex Pastor, subcampeón del mundo en la actualidad del ranking de la Professional Kiteboard Riders Association, Michael Schitzhofer (Austria), Mikael Blomvall (Suecia), Youri Zoon (Holanda), Martín Vari (Argentina), Petr Tyushkevich (Rusia), así como de Álvaro Onieva, el kiter de referencia de España que, tras marcarse retos increíbles con su cometa y su tabla, regresó a la competición. Todos hicieron gala del mejor deporte, pero, finalmente, el rey fue Youri Zoom. El holandés aprovechó las increíbles condiciones de Tarifa para practicar el mejor Kitesurf, ofrecer a los asistentes trucos imposibles y hacerse con la victoria de una competición que marcará un antes y un después en este apasionante deporte.■

The top competitors filled the sky with their kites at the Mecca of wind, Tarifa, to take part in an enthralling event: the J&B Masters of Kite. For the first time ever, Valdevaqueros Beach welcomed the best kite surfers in the world who came to battle it out in the grand final of this competition. They provided pure entertainment not suitable for the faint of heart.

or a few days Tarifa became the world kiteboarding capital. Nobody wanted to miss the chance to see the best riders play with the waves and wind to complete the best tricks in the three specialities that make up the sport: Freestyle, Racing and Waves. The event, held from September 2 to 5 in Valdevaqueros, offered some unprecedented action with jumps up to twelve metres high. The weather conditions were ideal for the competition and favoured some incredible tricks thanks to winds of up to thirty knots. The final involved the top ten kitesurfers of all time with the six best on the domestic scene. The riders that made up this impressive tournament field included local boarder Álex Pastor, the current number two in the Professional Kiteboard Riders Association ranking, Michael Schitzhofer (Austria),
Mikael Blomvall (Sweden), Youri Zoon (Holland), Martín Vari (Argentina), Petr Tyushkevich (Russia) and Álvaro Onieva, Spain’s top kiter who, after setting himself some incredible challenges with his kite and board, returned to competition. They all displayed the best skills, but in

Pinceladas del siglo XXI El arte del siglo XXI encierra formas de expresión inimaginables. Las posibilidades aportadas por las nuevas tecnologías son una fuente inagotable para artistas de nueva generación, que arriesgan en sus creaciones para originar trabajos sorprendentes.
E
n esta línea se encuentra Enrique Campayo, un joven artista que utiliza con maestría la fotografía como medio para descubrir realidades ocultas en el espacio o en el tiempo que luego manipula con la ayuda del ordenador o plasma, directamente, sobre el lienzo, dando forma a verdaderas obras de arte. Andalucía cuenta con un nutrido grupo de nuevos talentos con una importante formación académica y una gran dosis de creatividad. En este conjunto, encontramos el trabajo de Enrique Campayo, un joven pintor que pisa fuerte, con trabajos estudiados, complejos y, como toda obra de arte, siempre bellos. Su obra está enmarcada entre la pintura y la fotografía, aunque también se complementa con proyectos en el campo del video-arte. En esta faceta, precisamente, destaca el Premio a la Mejor Videocreación en el Festival de la Imagen y el Vídeo Arte Digital (FIVAD 2007) que se celebra en San Roque, así como las exposiciones realizadas en la Galería Valle Ortí de Valencia (2006), en el X Festival Audiovisual “InCINEración” (2005) en la Galería Sandunga de Granada, o en el premio que organiza la Fundación Francisco Carvajal de Granada. Su obra adolece de continuidad. Y es que, según explica el joven, no ha encontrado un solo estilo por el que guiar sus inquietudes, como sería lo habitual. Lejos de trabajar, como la mayoría de creadores, en una línea definida y por series, el autor prefiere hablar de “familias de trabajos”, las cuales se van generando con el paso de los años. Éstas no corresponden a etapas temporales, pero sí responden de forma conjunta a inte-
reses fundamentales y a ideas y preocupaciones perennes. Tanto formal como teóricamente, existe en su trabajo un gran interés por establecer relaciones de contrarios, ya sea uniendo pintura y fotografía o planteando la convivencia de recursos expresivos enfrentados entre sí, como la forma orgánica frente a la forma geométrica, o conceptuales, como el azar frente a lo controlado, lo casual frente a lo premeditado o lo inconsciente frente a lo racional. Este artista, además, recupera algunas ideas del filósofo judeo-alemán Walter Benjamin, el cual relaciona el inconsciente óptico de la fotografía con el psicoanálisis, afirmando que la fotografía, (y sus medios auxiliares), hace patente, lo que la percepción humana es incapaz: capturar una fracción de segundo o mostrar una imagen microscópica. Enrique Campayo utiliza la fotografía como un medio para descubrir realidades ocultas en el espacio (por su tamaño minúsculo o enorme) o en el tiempo (por su rapidez o lentitud), que luego manipula con la ayuda del ordenador o trabaja directamente sobre el lienzo. Algunas de sus obras, por lo tanto, tienen su origen en archivos de imágenes que ciertos autores denominan de “segundo grado”, las cuales pertenecen al ámbito científico y que sólo son apreciables porque se ha realizado una transformación sobre la imagen original, alterando, por ejemplo, su tamaño (una visión microscópica), el tiempo (un movimiento fugaz detenido) o el espectro visible (una radiografía), quizás en un intento de establecer relaciones de contrarios, en éste caso, del Arte frente a la Ciencia.n
JÓVENES TALENTOS Enrique Campayo es Licenciado en Bellas Artes por la Universidad de Granada. Ha realizado talleres con Chantal Maillard, Mira Bernabéu, Santiago Ydañez, Javier Pérez o Mateo Maté, estos dos últimos durante el periodo de disfrute de la Beca Al Raso - Valle de Lecrín (2005). Entre las múltiples exposiciones en las que ha participado, merecen reseñarse la celebrada en 2009 en ArtJaén, tras obtener el 2º premio del certamen de pintura “La Rural”. Anteriormente, ya había participado en exposiciones, como la celebrada en el Centro Insular de Cultura El Almacén (Lanzarote), con motivo de la Bienal Off de Arte Contemporáneo 2007 y la celebrada en el Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga (CACMálaga) titulada, Oasis, Colección Unicaja de Arte Contemporáneo. También en Málaga, y como paso previo a la exposición del CAC, expuso en el Palacio Episcopal, con motivo del X Certamen Unicaja de Artes Plásticas (2006), donde obtuvo un premio de adquisición de obra. En 2006 destaca la exposición Hispaania noored naalikunstnikud en el Eesti Konsert (Auditorio Nacional de Estonia) en Tallin, proyecto patrocinado por el Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y de Cooperación, así como la participación en la Bienal Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo (ALBIAC), en el Parque Natural Cabo de Gata-Níjar (Almería), entre otras.

21st Century art encompasses unimaginable forms of expression. The possibilities provided by new technology are an endless source of inspiration for artists of the new generation who take risks in their work to create surprising creations.
I
n this field, Enrique Campayo is a young artist who masterfully uses photography as a means to reveal realities hidden in space and time, which he then manipulates with the help of a computer or captures on a canvas to produce true works of art. Andalusia is home to a large contingent of new talents with a serious academic grounding and a large dose of creativity. Among these, Enrique Campayo is a young painter going from strength to strength with studied, complex and, like all works of art, beautiful pieces. His work sits somewhere between painting and photography, although it is also complemented with video art projects. In this field he obtained the Best Video Creation Award in the Festival of Digital Image and Video Art (FIVAD 2007) held in San Roque and he has taken part in the exhibitions organised
by the Valle Ortí Gallery in Valencia (2006), the 10th InCINEración Audiovisual Festival (2005) at the Sandunga Gallery in Granada, and the competition organised by the Francisco Carvajal Foundation in Granada. ऀHis have a certain continuity. According to the young artist, he has not found a single style by which to channel his concerns, as would be the norm. Far from working like most artists in a defined line and in series, this creator prefers to talk about “Families of Works” which are generated over the years... They do not correspond to periods of time, but they do jointly address fundamental interests and perpetual ideas and concerns. Both formally and theoretically, his work exhibits a great interest in establishing relationships between opposites, whether by combining painting and photography or propos-
ing the coexistence of conflicting expressive resources, like an organic form juxtaposed against a geometric form, or opposing concepts like chance versus control, coincidence versus premeditated or unconscious versus rational. The artist also evokes some ideas of the Jewish-German philosopher Walter Benjamin, relating the unconscious lens of photography with psychoanalysis, asserting that photography and its auxiliary resources achieve something that human perception is incapable of: capturing a fraction of a second or showing a microscopic image. Enrique Campayo uses photography as a means to reveal hidden realities in space (owing to their minute or enormous size) or time (due to their speed of slowness), which he then manipulates with the help of a computer or captures directly on a canvas. Some of his works therefore originate from image archives that some artists call “second grade”, images that belong to the scientific world and can only be appreciated because the original has been transformed, altering, for example, its size (a microscopic view), time (a fleeting moment frozen) or visual spectrum (an x-ray), perhaps in an attempt to establish conflicting relationships, in this case between art and science. n

GALICIA, EL ESTRECHO Y LAS JORNADAS DE HISTORIA José Regueira Ramos - Cronista Oficial de Jimena
Escribo en vísperas de las XI Jornadas de Historia del Campo de Gibraltar organizadas por el Instituto de Estudios Campogibraltareños que, cuando salga la revista, ya se habrán celebrado en Jimena durante los días 22, 23 y 24 de octubre.
E
n estas Jornadas se habrán presentado 47 comunicaciones de otros tantos investigadores, que profundizarán en aspectos históricos de la zona durante muy diferentes épocas: fenicia, romana, musulmana o temas de la Edad Moderna o Contemporánea. Se abordan trabajos relacionados con urbanismo histórico, toponimia, sistema s defensivos, numismática, de las Cortes de Cádiz, puertos del Estrecho, conventos, corsarios y otros muchos aspectos monográficos de la historia comarcal, que serán expuestos en la Casa de la Cultura de la Estación de Jimena durante un tiempo de quince minutos. Además de estas comunicaciones, también serán expuestas dos ponencias de una duración de 45-50 minutos con las que se inauguran y se clausuran las Jornadas. Estas ponencias estarán a cargo de las dos personas a quienes se dedican estas jornadas: el historiador gibraltareño Tito Venady y yo mismo. Venady pronunciará la ponencia de clausura sobre Por qué desaparecieron los fenicios en la historia de la Baja Andalucía. Yo expondré la inaugural sobre La Relación marítima entre Galicia y el Estrecho. La tragedia de los pesqueros San Fausto y Con. Con ello trato de rendir homenaje a mis dos tierras: mi Galicia natal y la Campogibraltareña de adopción afectiva y oficial puesto que Jimena ha tenido a bien concederme el honroso título

de hijo adoptivo. Me parece además un momento muy oportuno porque esos días se cumplen mis cincuenta años de estancia en el Campo de Gibraltar. Agradezco al Instituto de Estudios Campogibraltareños el doble honor de la dedicatoria de las Jornadas y de confiarme la ponencia inaugural. La relación marítima entre Galicia y el Estrecho podemos considerar que se remonta al origen mitológico de ambos territorios, los dos atribuidos a Hércules a quien la mitología le atribuye la fundación de mi ciudad, La Coruña y de su torre por eso llamada de Hércules, el faro más antiguo del mundo y funcionamiento. Por ello el escudo de La Coruña es la torre de Hércules sobre la cabeza y las tibias cruzadas de Gerión, el gigante mitológico a quien Hércules persiguió hasta las tierras de Galicia y allí le dio muerte, erigiéndose en su honor la torre y la ciudad. Pero si la torre es el emblema de La Coruña, las columnas de Hércules, Calpe y Abyla, están representadas nada menos que en los escudos de Cádiz, Andalucía y España. Mitologías aparte, hay muchos hechos y personajes históricos gallegos que desempeñaron un papel relevante en nuestra zona. No en vano de los siete municipios campogibraltareños, dos están hermanados con pueblos puertos coruñeses. Algeciras lo está con Neda
por haber sido una nave de este pueblo de la ría de Ferrol la que en el siglo XIV rompió las cadenas con las que los musulmanes bloqueaban el puerto de Algeciras, facilitando así su conquista; por ello existe una plaza de Neda en Algeciras y la avenida principal de Neda es la avenida Algeciras. Igualmente están hermanados Los Barrios y Muxía, por la gran labor realizada por los voluntarios barreños en la limpieza de las playas y costa gallegas, contaminadas de petróleo por la tragedia del Prestige. Hay muchos personajes gallegos con presencia histórica notoria en la zona. Unos más conocidos y otros menos. Esta relación galaico-campogibraltareña de alguno de estos personajes intentaré sintetizarla en mi exposición. Así hablaré del pirata Benito Soto (Pontevedra 1805, Gibraltar 1830) o del radiotelegrafista Benjamín Balboa, cuya actuación en los primeros días de la guerra civil en relación al paso del Estrecho de las tropas de África fue tan importante como desconocida. Y, sobre todo, hablaré y aportaré importante documentación inédita de los 24 pescadores gallegos afincados en Algeciras y muertos trágicamente en 1938 en el Estrecho a bordo del destructor republicano José Luis Díez a consecuencia de un tremendo impacto del crucero Canarias.■

I write this just before the 11th Campo de Gibraltar History Conference, organised by the Institute of Campo de Gibraltar Studies, which, when this magazine goes to print, will have been held in Jimena on October 22, 23 and 24
I
n the conference, 47 talks by the same number of researchers will have been presented, delving into aspects of local history during very different periods: Phoenician, Roman, Islamic, modern and contemporary eras. The talks will cover topics that include historical planning, place names, defensive systems, coinage, the Courts of Cadiz, ports of the Straights, convents, corsairs, and many other monographic aspects of local history, to be presented at the Estación de Jimena Cultural Centre and lasting fifteen minutes each. In addition to these talks, there will also be lectures lasting 45 to 50 minutes inaugurating and closing the conference. These lectures will be given by the two people who the conference is dedicated to: the Gibraltarian historian Tito Venady and myself. Venady will give a closing lecture on ‘Why the Phoenicians disappeared in the history of Lower Andalusia’. I will give the opening talk on ‘The maritime relationship between Galicia and the Straights. The tragedy of the San Fausto and Con fishing boats’. My aim is to pay tribute to my two homelands: my native Galicia and Campo de Gibraltar, my adoptive home both emotionally and officially, since Jimena has honoured me with the title of adoptive son. It also seems like the right time because I have now been in Campo de Gibraltar for fifty years. I am grateful to the Institute of Campo de Gibraltar Studies for the double
honour of being a dedicatee of the conference and for entrusting the opening lecture to me. The maritime relationship between Galicia and the Straights goes back to the mythological origin of the two territories: the founding of my city, Corunna, is attributed to Hercules, who also gave his name to the Tower of Hercules, the oldest lighthouse in the world still in use. This is why the arms of Corunna consist of the Tower of Hercules on the head and shinbone of Geryon, the mythological giant who Hercules pursued all the way to Galicia where he slew him, erecting the tower and the city in his honour. And while the tower is the emblem of Corunna, the Pillars of Hercules, Calpe and Abyla, are represented in the arms of Cadiz, Andalusia and Spain, no less. Mythology aside, there are many events and people from Galician history who have played an important role in our area. Accordingly, two of the seven municipalities of Campo de Gibraltar are twinned with coastal towns in the Corunna province. Algeciras is twinned with Neda, since it was a ship from this town that on the Ferrol tidal inlet that in the 14th Century broke the chains with which the Muslims were blocking the Port of Algeciras, thereby making it easier to capture. This is why there is a Plaza de Neda in Algeciras and the main avenue in Neda is called Avenida Algeciras. Los Barrios and Muxía are also twinned, owing to
the efforts of the volunteers from Los Barrios in cleaning the Galician beaches and coast, polluted by oil from the Prestige tragedy. There are many Galician people with a well-known historical presence in the area. Some of them are better known than others. I will attempt to summarise their links to the two areas in my lecture. I will talk about the pirate Benito Soto (b. Pontevedra 1805, d. Gibraltar 1830) and the wireless operator Benjamín Balboa, whose actions in the early days of the civil war in relation to the troops’ passage over the Straights from Africa were as important as they are unknown. And, above all, I will comment on important unpublished documentation on the 24 Galician fishermen based in Algeciras who tragically died in 1938 on the Straights aboard the Republic destroyer José Luis Díez, battered by the guns of the cruiser Canarias. ■

Patricia era de mirada triste, de voz grave, por esto le fue mucho mejor cuando el director King Vidor la incluyó como protagonista junto a Gary Cooper en ‘El manantial’, drama político inspirado tras la contienda de la 2ª Guerra Mundial. Pero el idilio que mantuvo junto a su compañero Gary, veintidós años mayor que ella, iba más allá de toda carrera que empezaba a emerger. Durante un largo período de tiempo, ambos lucharon por sostener un romance eclipsado por el status matrimonial de Cooper y hostigado por la prensa sensacionalista que habría de costarle a Patricia un aborto y una terrible depresión tras ser abandonada. Casi cuarenta años después confesaba en sus memorias que seguía amando al actor.
No hay duda del potencial de esta mujer y de la fortaleza con la cual supo labrarse una carrera a pesar de los continuos sinsabores que le deparó el destino como la pérdida de una hija a los siete años de edad y el accidente que sufrió otro de sus cinco hijos que le ocasionaron daños irreparables. Todo ello unido a los tres infartos cerebrales provocados por el embarazo de su cuarto hijo que la sumió en un coma del que pudo recuperarse. Cuenta la leyenda que la revista Variety la declaró muerta, pero en este caso su marido supo estar a su lado y gracias al empuje familiar Patricia lograría salir del bache e incluso volver a actuar. No obstante, en 1983 la pareja pone fin al matrimonio debido a la relación que Roald Dalh venía manteniendo desde hacía años con una de sus mejores amigas.
En 1953, Patricia contrae matrimonio con un hombre al que no ama pero con el que habría de permanecer durante toda una vida. Pero la popularidad la obtiene gracias a su protagonismo en ‘Ultimátum a la tierra’ de Robert Wise donde se
Patricia alternaría en el cine y la televisión apareciendo como estrella invitada en series de máxima audiencia en su día como ‘Hotel’, ‘Kung Fu’, ‘La casa de la pradera’ o ‘Se ha escrito un crimen’ y nos sorprendería más tarde en ‘Cookie´s Fortune’ de Robert Altman. Podríamos recordarla como un cisne que se paseó por las aguas de Hollywood a expensas de sus dotes para la interpretación. Aún teniendo la mala suerte como compañera de viaje en su vida personal siempre se mantuvo alerta en su trabajo y a pesar de verse truncado, hoy recibe su lugar en el universo de las estrellas que nutre la gran industria gracias a sus películas que ya son historia. n

the broken swan
Moulded, shaped and sculpted to savour the sweet smell of success in the golden age of Hollywood of her time, Patricia Neal succumbed to a turbulent existence and her life on the big screen was somewhat hampered. Nonetheless, the universe of stars to remember reserves a well-deserved place for her thanks to a limited but fruitful career... ...And when we say fruitful we’re referring, for instance, to the two illustrious awards she received, acclaiming her as a magnificent actress. The attention of great producers and directors turned to this woman, born in the state of Kentucky, when she won a Tony, the most important award in the theatre world, following her debut aged 21 on Broadway in the play Another Part of the Forest. The movie world was her immediate destination but like so many actresses associated with the stage Patricia, in spite of adversity, would never give up the theatre. She made her big screen debut alongside a celebrated Ronald Reagan in John Loves Mary, but her physical qualities were not suited to comedy. Patricia had a sad look, a deep voice, so things went much better for her when she was cast by director King Vidor as the lead role alongside Gary Cooper in The Fountainhead, an inspired post-Second World War political drama. But her romance with her co-star Gary, 22 years her senior, took precedence over her fledgling career. For a long time the two fought to maintain a relationship, overshadowed by Cooper’s marital status and harassed by the gutter press, leading to an abortion and a terrible depression after being left by her lover. Almost

forty years later she confessed in her memoirs that she still loved the actor. In 1953 Patricia marred a man who she did not love but with whom she would remain all her life. Her marriage to writer and scriptwriter Roald Dahl, the author of children’s novels like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda and Fantastic Mr Fox, was full of ups and downs and continual pregnancies. Patricia’s career therefore progressed slowly and intermittently, but great directors clamoured for her and she appeared alongside John Garfield in Michael Curtiz’s The Breaking Point, in Operation Pacific with John Wayne and in director Elia Kazan’s A Face in the Crowd. But her popularity came thanks to her lead role in Robert Wise’s The Day the Earth Stood Still, with which she had the young crowd eating out of her hand thanks to the obsession with science fiction that the movie world tapped into back in the far-off fifties. Later she reappeared brilliantly in several films, including her wonderful supporting role in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, her decisive and dazzling performance in Hud alongside Paul Newman, which earned her an Oscar for Best Actress, and her fabulous acting in The Sub-
ject Was Roses, for which she was once again nominated for an Academy Award. There is no doubt of the potential of this woman and the strength with which she carved out her career despite the continual troubles that befell her, like the loss of a daughter at seven years of age and the accident suffered by another of her five children causing irreparable injury. On top of this she suffered three strokes caused by her pregnancy with her fourth child that put her in a coma, which she eventually recovered from. Legend has it that the magazine Variety declared her dead, but this time her husband remained by her side and thanks to the support of her family Patricia got through it and would even act again. But in 1983 the couple ended their marriage due to the relationship that Roald Dahl had been having for several years with one of this best friends. Patricia alternated between film and television, appearing as a guest star in the hit series of the time like Hotel, Kung Fu, Little House on the Prairie or Murder, She Wrote, and surprising us later in Robert Altman’s Cookie’s Fortune. We could remember her as a swan that swam across Hollywood waters thanks to her gift for acting. Although bad luck accompanied her in her personal life, she always kept on her toes in her work and although her career was cut short she now has a place in the universe of stars that feeds the big industry, thanks to her films that are now part of history. n

Las canchas del Santa María Polo Club se convirtieron, una vez más, en el punto de encuentro de la sociedad sotograndina. El jamón ibérico es uno de los mejores manjares de la gastronomía española, único en el mundo entero. Para recibir esta denominación, sin embargo, la pieza ha de reunir una serie de características, que vienen dadas por las particularidades del cerdo, su alimentación y crianza en dehesas, así como su proceso de elaboración y curado. Si todo se cumple, el resultado será excepcional: un lujo para los sentidos.
¿CÓMO IDENTIFICAR UN JAMÓN IBÉRICO? 1) Pata fina y sin pelos, pezuña negra oscura. 2) Grasa exterior blanda y suave al tacto. 3) Peso aproximado entre 7 a 8.5 Kg. 4) Tiempo de curación de 20 a 28 meses. 5) Corte de las lonchas con vetas blancas (infiltraciones) por la bellota. os Prosciuttos de Parma, los de Bayona…, existen muchos tipos de jamón en el mundo, pero, ninguno, como el ibérico. Una auténtica delicatesse nacional producida por una raza de cerdo que solamente se cría en las dehesas del suroeste peninsular y que tiene la peculiaridad genética de poder almacenar grasa en su tejido muscular proporcionando una textura y sabor inconfundible. Dentro de los jamones de tipo ibérico, no obstante, también hay variedad, según su producción y la alimentación de los porcinos. Así, el más prestigioso es el de bellota, un producto obtenido de cerdos alimentados durante los últimos meses a base de bellota y pastos de la dehesa. La necesidad de caminar para la búsqueda de alimento confiere una textura diferente a la carne y a su
forma, caracterizada por extremidades alargadas. Por otra parte, si el animal ha recibido bellotas en un periodo de su vida, pero al final ha sido criado con piensos, el jamón resultante será de recebo. La tercera clase de ibéricos es la denominada de cebo y responde a aquellos cerdos de raza ibérica alimentados con los mismos piensos que se les dan a los porcinos normales. Pero, no todo depende del cerdo en vida, también es necesario seguir una serie de pautas desde el sacrificio hasta que llega a la mesa. Se trata de un trabajo delicado y muy costoso del que resultaran piezas de calidad únicas. Lo primero que se hace tras el sacrificio, es cortar el jamón en forma de ‘v’ para que presente el característico aspecto de los jamones serranos. Después, se pasa al salazón y, tras meses entre capas de sal

Es, entonces, cuando el jamón adquiere su aroma y su sabor, sudando poco a poco y fundiendo su grasa con la carne, la sal y el aire puro, hasta dar lugar a auténtico lujo ibérico.■

Ibérico ham (or jamón) is one of the best delicacies of Spanish cuisine, unique in the world. To receive this title, however, the ham must have a number of properties related to the characteristics of the pig, what it eats and its rearing on pastureland, as well its preparation and curing process. If all these requirements are met, the result will be exceptional: a luxury for the senses.
T
he Prosciutto di Parma, the Jambon de Bayonne.... there are many types of cured ham in the world, but none like Ibérico. It is a true national treasure produced by a breed of pig reared only on the pasturelands of the southwest of the peninsula, with the genetic attribute of being able to store fat in its muscle tissue, which provides an unmistakeable texture and flavour. However, there are also various different types of Ibérico ham depending on their production and on what the pigs eat. The most prestigious is the acorn-fed ham, obtained

from pigs that feed during the final months with acorns and graze on the pasture. The fact that they need to walk in order to find food gives the meat a different texture and shape, with elongated limbs. If the animal has had acorns at some point in its life but at the end it has been reared with animal feed, the resulting ham is called Recebo. The third type of Ibérico is called Cebo and it comes from Iberian pigs that are fed on the same feed as normal pigs. But it’s not just about what happens to the pig while it is alive; a number of rules must be followed from slaughter until it reaches the
table. It is a very delicate and costly operation that leads to hams of unique quality. Following slaughter the ham is firstly cut into a v-shape to give it the characteristic appearance of a Spanish cured ham. They are then salted and, after months below layers of sea salt in dark rooms, the hams are placed in drying sheds where they will remain for six to nine months at temperatures between 15 and 30 °C. The hams are then hung in cellars to age. This is when it acquires its aroma and flavour, gradually sweating, and the fat merges with the flesh, salt and pure air, until this Iberian delicacy is created. ■

GUARANTEE OF ORIGIN The areas of Spain where Ibérico ham is reared with a guarantee of origin are: Extremadura, Guijuelo (Salamanca), Sierra de Huelva (Jabugo) and Los Pedroches (Córdoba). High quality ham is also produced in Teruel, but it comes from white pigs rather than Iberian ones.

Marqués de Riscal seduce al gurú del vino,

Las bodegas de Marqués de Riscal llevan más de 150 años elaborando grandes vinos. Robert Parket no ha resistido la tentación de poner a prueba algunas de sus mejores añadas. Tras exigentes catas, el famoso crítico se ha dejado seducir por estos magníficos caldos, dándoles puntuaciones de lujo.

obert Parker es considerado el gran gurú del vino a nivel mundial. A través de su prestigiosa revista, ‘The Wine Advocate’, este norteamericano marca el ritmo del sector vinícola. Su baremo de puntuación, de cero a cien, es, actualmente, el gran referente para saber, a simple vista, si un vino es, o no, de calidad. Así, todo caldo que pasa por el paladar de Parker y supera los noventa puntos se convierte, automáticamente, en inmortal y multiplica, de forma vertiginosa, sus exportaciones.
En Wine Future Rioja 09, Parket probó los vinos de Marqués de Riscal y quedó encantado. Este año ha querido someter a su puntuación los caldos de la bodega. Para ello, el crítico de nariz prodigiosa e insuperable memoria olfativa, mandó a Jay Miller, el encargado de los vinos españoles, a realizar una cata en su variedad de añadas desde 1945 hasta 2005. Las puntuaciones fueron en todos los casos excelentes, aunque cabe resaltar el 99+ que el colaborador del exigente crítico decidió otorgar al Marqués de Riscal Gran Reserva de 1945. Esta puntuación no hace más que sumar un nuevo alago a un vino de calidad extraordinaria y que representa la más alta expresión de la viña criada desde hace siglos en Rioja. Asimismo, es importante destacar la puntuación dada a otros caldos de la bodega, como el Marqués de Riscal Gran AÑADA
Reserva de 1870, al que se le dieron 98 puntos; la añada 1883 de Marqués de Riscal Gran Reserva, que obtuvo un 96; la selección de 1889 de Marqués de Riscal Gran Reserva, que recibió una puntuación de 98; el Gran Reserva 1958, que consiguió 93 puntos, o el Marqués de Riscal Gran Reserva 1964, que fue evaluado con un 95. Por otra parte, hay resaltar también la excelente calificación aportada al Marqués de Riscal Gran Reserva 2001, que consiguió un 93+ tras la cata realizada para la revista, ‘The Wine Advocate’. Asimismo, no se pueden dejar de subrayar los éxitos logrados al respecto por el fabuloso Gran Reserva 2003, que fue alabado por los expertos con un 91+, y por el Reserva de la bodega, al que Miller concedió 90 puntos.■

Marqués de Riscal seduces wine guru
The Marqués de Riscal wineries have been producing great wines for over 150 years. Robert Parker could not resist the temptation of sampling some of their best vintages. Following expert tastings, the famous critic was seduced by these wonderful wines, giving them top marks.

obert Parker considered the world’s greatest wine guru. Via the prestigious magazine ‘The Wine Advocate’, the American sets the standards in the wine industry. His scoring system from zero to a hundred is now the standard when it comes to assessing a wine’s quality at a glance. Every wine that passes over Parker’s palate and exceeds 90 points automatically becomes immortal and exports quickly multiply. At Wine Future Rioja 09, Parker tried the Marqués de Riscal wines and was delighted by them. This year he decided to score the winery’s vintages. To do so, the critic with a prodigious nose and unbeatable olfactory memory sent Jay Miller, his Spanish wine expert, to taste vintages ranging from 1945 to 2005. The scores were excellent in all cases, although the most notable was the 99+ that the demanding critic’s partner decided to give the Marqués de Riscal Gran Reserva 1945. The score is just another complement for a wine of extraordinary quality, representing the greatest exponent of the vines that have been cultivated in Rioja for centuries. Other wines produced by the winery also received high scores, such as the Marqués de Riscal Gran Reserva 1870, given 98 points; the 1883 Marqués de Riscal Gran Reserva,
with 96 points; the 1889 Marqués de Riscal Gran Reserva, 98 points; the 1958 Gran Reserva, 93 points; and the Marqués de Riscal Gran Reserva 1964, evaluated at 95 points. An excellent score was also given to the Mar-
qués de Riscal Gran Reserva 2001, which obtained a 93+ in The Wine Advocate magazine’s tasting. The fabulous Gran Reserva 2003, given a 91+ by the experts, and the winery’s Reserva, given 90 points by Miller, were also a great success.■

Soufflé de Queso con Trufa Negra PARA 1 PERSONA • • • • • • • • • •
200 ml. de nata 20 g. de queso Cheddar, rallado 20 g. de queso parmesano, rallado 20 g. de queso Gruyer, rallado 5 claras de huevo Una pizca de sal ¼ de cucharadita de azafrán en polvo 1 cucharadita de mostaza en polvo Colman Una pizca de cayena Una pizca de nuez moscada recién rallada
PARA TERMINAR • 30 g. de trufa de invierno negra pelada
Hervimos la nata y la reducimos a la mitad. Añadimos el Cheddar, el parmesano y 20 g. del Gruyer y removemos hasta que el queso se funda por completo. Vertimos la salsa de queso por un colador a un cuenco. Tiramos los sólidos del colador. Dejamos que la salsa de queso se enfríe hasta la temperatura ambiente. Precalentamos el horno a 200ºC. Batimos las claras de huevo a punto de nieve. Añadimos la sal, el azafrán y la mostaza a las claras de huevo batidas. Usando una espátula, damos forma a las claras de huevo en un plato hasta lograr un montón suave. Espolvoreamos el resto del Gru-
yere rallado formando un círculo sobre un plato para horno. Colocamos el montón de claras sobre él. Vertimos la salsa de queso encima. (Guardamos un poco de salsa para adornar). Espolvoreamos la cayena y la nuez moscada sobre el montón de claras. Ponemos el soufflé en el horno precalentado durante 6 minutos. Para terminar Sacamos el soufflé del horno. Vertimos sobre el soufflé los restos de la salsa de queso caliente y adornamos la parte superior con virutas de trufa negra de invierno. Servimos el soufflé al momento.
Cheese Soufflé With Black Truffe SERVES 1 • • • • • • • • • •
200 ml. cream 20 g. Cheddar cheese, grated 20 g. Parmesan cheese, grated 60 g. Gruyere cheese, grated 5 egg whites pinch of salt 1/4 teaspoon saffron powder 1 teaspoon Colman’s mustard powder pinch of cayenne pepper pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
TO FINISH •
30 g. shaved black winter truffle
Bring the cream to the boil and reduce it by half. Add the Cheddar, Parmesan cheese and 20 grams of the Gruyere and stir until the cheese has melted completely.
Sprinkle the rest of the grated Gruyere in a circle on an ovenproof dish. Move the egg-white mound onto it. Pour the cheese sauce over it (save a little of the sauce as garnish).
Pour the cheese sauce through a sieve into a bowl Throw away the solids in the sieve. Leave the cheese sauce to cool down to room temperature.
Sprinkle cayenne pepper and nutmeg over the egg-white mound. Put the souffle into the preheated oven for 6 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 200 °C. Beat the egg white to soft peaks. Fold the salt, saffron powder and mustard powder into the beaten egg whites. Using a palette knife, shape the egg white on a dish to an attractive smooth mound.
To finish Take the souffle out of the oven. Pour the leftover warm cheese sauce over the souffle and top it with some shavings of black winter truffle. Serve the souffle immediately.

latos de tenedor: Este tipo de platos suelen constituirse por carnes o pescados acompañados de verduras y/o frutas. Las carnes son el principal aporte de hierro, proteínas, creatina, zinc, fósforo y vitaminas del grupo B. El organismo utiliza este tipo de proteína para construir y regenerar tejidos. Es importante mencionar que dependiendo de la parte del cuerpo del animal, las propiedades nutritivas pueden variar. Esto, junto con el consumo muy habitual de carnes, favorece el aumento del colesterol sanguíneo y la aparición de problemas de corazón. La cantidad semanal recomendada es de 3-4 raciones. Los pescados proporcionan una proteína de mayor valor nutritivo que la carne, sobre todo los azules. Además, tienen un 5% de grasas insaturadas, las cuales son mejores para el organismo. Entre ellas, encontramos el aceite omega 3 que nos ayuda a reducir el riesgo de infarto de miocardio. También nos aportan yodo, fósforo, hierro, magnesio, calcio y vitaminas A, D Y B12. Los pescados blancos son similares a los azules, presentando una única diferencia en el aporte de grasas siendo éste de un 2%. La cantidad semanal recomendada es de 4-3 raciones. Las verduras y frutas son una fantástica fuente de vitaminas, minerales y fibra. El consumo de fibra nos ayudará a controlar nuestro tránsito intestinal, siempre que el consumo no sea excesivo, ya que de lo contrario obtendríamos el efecto opuesto. Es importante saber que las proteínas de las legumbres son de menor calidad que las de origen animal por su carencia en aminoácidos esenciales, aunque combinándolas con cereales pueden complementarse. Por otra parte, son una buena fuente de hidratos de carbono, con lo cual proporcionan un gran poder energético. El contenido de fibra es bastante alto por lo que, al igual que las frutas y las verduras, nos ayudarán a regular nuestro tránsito intestinal y los niveles de azúcar en sangre. El aporte de vitaminas y minerales también es alto, proporcionando vitaminas del grupo B, C, A, ácido fólico, calcio, hierro, magnesio y fósforo. Para conseguir que estos dos tipos de platos sean saludables, tenemos que tener en cuenta la cantidad de grasa que usamos para la preparación y la que llevan los alimentos que introducimos, intentando siempre retirar la grasa sobrante para reducir la cantidad que ingiramos después.■

Once the heat has subsided, in Spain the ‘spoon’ dishes of pulse stews make a come back, having been less popular in the summer. Balance is the key and both ‘spoon’ and ‘fork’ dishes are necessary for a balanced diet. Take note of the characteristics of each and don’t forget to include them adequately in your day-to-day life.

This type of dish normally comprises meat or fish accompanied by vegetables and/or fruit.
Meat is your main provider of iron, protein, creatine, zinc, phosphorous and B vitamins. The body uses this kind of protein to build and regenerate tissues. It is important to bear in mind that its nutritional properties can vary depending on the part of the animal, and that very regular consumption of meat favours an increase in cholesterol levels in the blood and the onset of heart problems. The recommended weekly amount is three to four portions. Fish, and blue fish in particular, provides protein of a higher nutritional value than meat. It also has 5 % unsaturated fat, which is better for the body. These include omega-3 oil, which reduced the risk of heart attack. It also provides iodine, phosphorous, iron, magnesium, calcium and vitamins A, D and B12. White fish are similar to blue; the only difference is in the fat content, which is 2 %. The recommended weekly amount is three to four portions. Fruit and vegetables are a fantastic source of vitamins, minerals and fibre.

Consuming fibre helps control intestinal transit, as long as excessive consumption is avoided, which would have the opposite effect. Another positive effect of fibre is that eating fruit and vegetables with their skin, which has the most fibre, helps diabetes sufferers to absorb sugars or carbohydrates contained in food more slowly, preventing sudden surges or drops in glucose levels in the blood.

The pulses in these stews are a very rich source of vegetable protein with a content of 25 to 30 % of this protein, so they are a very important food group for vegetarians, for instance. his year, the fifth madridGOLF show, to be held from November 26 to 28 in Block 6 of the IfemaFeria de Madrid exhibition centre, will have a large number of new features, like a greater presence of golf tourism companies and all the main sports equipment brands, as well as its usual training, practice and entertainment areas. As it does every season, the fair will act as a hub of the golf industry, a unique space where professionals and enthusiasts will
find everything they are looking for in the golf world. This year madridGOLF 2010 will also become the main platform for popular support of Madrid’s bid to host the Ryder Cup in 2018 via an agreement reached with the two sports institutions most closely involved in the bid: the Royal Spanish Golf Federation and the Madrid Federation. With a 100-square-metre stand located at the entrance to Block 6, madridGOLF visitors will be able to offer their support for the bid to bring the most important team golf
championships in the world to Spain. The event is the foremost meeting place for the industry and for friends of golf in Spain, and all the visitors will be able to sign a document backing the bid, which the Spanish Golf Federation will then send to the Ryder Cup Bid Committee. Ejercicios analíticos. Ejercicios especialmente dirigidos a trabajar un grupo muscular determinado. Son los ejercicios más seguros y de ejecución más fácil, por lo que cronológicamente deberían de trabajarse en los primeros estadios de la preparación. Generalmente se trata de ejercicios de cadena cinética cerrada. Estos ejercicios se puede realizar con diferentes medios o equipamiento: a. Con máquinas isotónicas. b. Con el peso corporal. c. Con peso libre, lastres, poleas o gomas.
En este grupo incluimos ejercicios como: Extensiones de cuadriceps, curl de femoral, extensiones de gemelos o soleos en máquina o en prensa, aductores o glúteos en máquina, extensiones para gemelos de pie, todos los ejercicios de suelo en colchoneta para glúteos, aductores, psoas, etc., incluyendo lastres, peso libre o gomas para aumentar la intensidad. Estos ejercicios se suelen trabajar con un régimen de contracción dinámico-concéntrico, isométrico o excéntrico, en función del objetivo planteado. Por lo general, se aplican en períodos orientados hacia el Acondicionamiento General de Fuerza y Fuerza-Resistencia. b)
Ejercicios Generales. Son ejercicios en los que intervienen diferentes grupos musculares. Se trata de ejercicios de ejecución más compleja con un mayor componente coordinativo. Aquí, incluimos ejercicios tanto de cadena cinética abierta, como cerrada. Se pueden realizar con el siguiente equipamiento: a. Con el peso corporal. b. Con peso libre, gomas, balones medicinales, poleas, etc. c. Con plataformas inestables, Bosu, Fitball, etc.
Aquí incluiríamos ejercicios como: Sentadilla, sentadilla + salto, lungues, step, cargadas, etc. Cada uno con sus variantes, una o dos piernas, variando apoyos, sobre plataformas inestables, con peso libre, bosu, gomas, etc. Este tipo de ejercicios se trabajan prioritariamente de forma dinámica-concéntrica, aunque se pueden incluir en determinados momentos ejercicios isométricos o excéntricos. Son los ejercicios primordiales en el trabajo de fuerza máxima y fuerza explosiva. c)
Ejercicios especiales. Se trata de aquellos ejercicios que simulan el patrón motor del deporte que estamos practicando. En nuestro caso, hablamos de ejercicios que tienen una transferencia directa sobre el gesto del swing o el putt. Estamos hablando de ejercicios generales que involucran grandes grupos musculares, generalmente de cadena cinética abierta. Al igual que en caso anteriores podemos diferenciar: a. Con el peso corporal. b. Con peso libre, gomas, balones medicinales, poleas, etc. c. Con plataformas inestables, Bosu, Fitball, etc.
Ya que estamos hablando de ejercicios dirigidos al fortalecimiento de piernas, aquí incluiríamos variantes de ejercicios como sentadillas, step o lungues, pero con rotaciones de tronco y flexo-extensiones de cadera, con pivotes sobre una pierna, simulaciones del swing, etc. Por su complejidad, estos ejercicios son el último escalón en la preparación física del jugador de golf. Los ejercicios especiales se trabajan casi exclusivamente de forma dinámica-concéntrica y son los indicados en los períodos de fuerza rápida o fuerza especial. Son los más utilizados durante los tiempos de competiciones. ■

Regardless of the objective pursued in strength training (injury prevention or improvement of physical condition), as a guideline there are various kinds of strength exercises can be done in a training session. a)

Analytical exercises. Exercises especially aimed at strengthening a particular muscle group. They are the safest and easiest exercises, so they should be scheduled in at the beginning of the session. Generally they are closed kinetic chain exercises. These exercises can be done in various ways: With isotonic machines. With body weight. With free weights, dead weights, cable machines or exercise bands.
This group includes exercises such as: quad extensions, leg curls, calf or soleus extensions (machine or press), abductors or glutei (machine), gastrocnemius extensions, all of the floor mat exercises for glutei, abductors, psoas etc. including dead weights, free weights or bands to increase intensity. These exercises are normally dynamic-concentric, isometric or eccentric contraction. Generally, they are used in phases geared towards general strength and strength-resistance conditioning.

General exercises. Exercises involving various muscle groups. More complex exercises with a higher level of coordination required. These include both open and closed kinetic chain exercises. They can include exercises such as: squat, half squat, half squat + jump, lunges, steps, etc. There are variations on each exercise: one or two legs, varying supports, on unstable platforms, with free weights, Bosu, bands etc. These exercises are mainly done dynamically-concentrically, although isometric or eccentric exercises can be included at certain stages. They are essential exercises for increasing maximum and explosive strength.

Special exercises. Exercises that simulate the body patterns of the sport in question. In our case they are exercises that transfer directly to the swing or putting movement. They are general exercises that involved large muscle groups. Generally they are open kinetic chain exercises. As above, we can differentiate between: a. With body weight. b. With free weights, bands, medicine balls, cable machines etc. c. With unstable platforms, BOSU, Fitball etc.
Since we are focussing on exercises that strengthen the legs, here we can include variations on exercises like squats, steps or lunges but with torso rotations and hip flexo-extensions, with pivots on one leg, swing simulations etc. Owing to their complexity, these exercises are the last stage in a golfer’s physical training. The special exercises are exclusively dynamicconcentric and they are recommended for speed strength or special strength stages. They are the most common during competition periods. ■

Club de GOLF La cañada La Cañada surge de la iniciativa de Jaime Ortiz Patiño, que se interesó por las inquietudes que presentaban los guadiareños por el golf y su práctica. El Ayuntamiento proporcionó el terreno, Robert Trent Jones se encargó del diseño y La Cañada se hizo realidad en 1991, tratándose del primer club de golf municipal de España. Diez años
más tarde, gracias a la ayuda económica del programa First Tee y a Ortiz Patiño, se abrieron los segundos nueve hoyos, esta vez diseñados por Dave Thomas. El campo tiene un recorrido ameno y variado que se caracteriza por una importante arboleda a base de especies autóctonas y la cañada del hoyo 18, que da nombre al campo.

ALCAIDESA Links GOLF Club Es el único campo de golf tipo links del sur de España. Alcaidesa is the only links type golf course in the south of Spain. It was designed by Peter Allis and Clive Clark in 1992 and offers natural conditions which have made it a fashionable venue in recent years. Its spectacular views over the Mediterranean, to Gibraltar and the northern mountain RSG152
range of Morocco, make it an ideal place for playing golf. The layout of the course includes water hazards, playing a particularly significant role on the second. The wind is also tends to come into play, making it very hard at times to keep the ball on the fairway.

HOW TO GET THERE? The exit for the course is at kilometre 124.6 of the road between Sotogrande and La Línea. Having left the road, Alcaidesa is at around 2.5 kilometres.
