All About Me Theme 1 All About Me

Age: 2-3

After completing this lesson the learner should know more about:        

The names of different parts of the body Signing the word: me His shadow Concepts: big and small Opening and closing pegs The colour yellow Creating edible art The circle

Memory verse

Activity 1.2

1.1 God made me (Memory verse cut-outs)

Looking at himself in a mirror helps the young learner become aware of his body. This is called “bodily awareness”.



I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Psalm 139:14 (NIV)

Additional thematic verses: Genesis 1:27, Isaiah 45:12

Discussion 1.2 Teddy bear body parts (Conversation starter-see back page, stuffed toy, mirror) 



Touch the learner's favourite stuffed toy’s head, ears, eyes, nose, mouth, legs, arms, hands, feet and tummy. Name each part as you touch it. Ask the learner to stand in front of a mirror and touch his own head, ears, eyes, nose, mouth, legs, arms, hands, feet and tummy. Also make mention of his hair, fingers, toes, nails and other relevant parts. Discuss what we use these different body parts for (we use our ears for listening, our eyes for seeing, our nose for smelling, our mouth for speaking, our legs for walking etc).

Activity 1.3 The learner signs the word “me.”

Sign language 1.3 Saying me 

All About Me

Activity 1.5-1.6

Origin as a sign: Indicating self. Usage in a sentence: Speak to me.

Gross motor coordination: the movements of the larger muscles of the body. Accurate movements and effective control over the muscles are necessary for all knowledge and intellectual functions.

Science and discovery 1.4 A shadow 



Age: 2-3

Go outdoors and stand in a sunny spot. Show the little learner his shadow. Enter into the shade. Point to the fact that his shadow is gone now.

Gross motor coordination activity 1.5 The big parts of the body

Activity 1.6

Demonstrate the following actions:    

Swing your arms Turn in circles Shrug your shoulders Wiggle your body

 

Jump on the spot Bend over and touch the floor

A learner makes his body “big.”

Let the learner copy these movements as you do them. 1.6

I can do these things

Perform and verbalise the actions listed below. For example, when you sit down say “I can sit, you can sit.”      

Sit Stand Clap your hands Stomp your feet Make your body big (stretch your arms outwards and place your legs far apart) Make your body small (get onto your haunches and bring

your arms in, towards your body) Blink your eyes Open and close your mouth

Fine motor coordination activities 1.7 Hair (Chalk, outdoor surface, printout, scissors, clothing pegs) 

 



Age: 2-3

These activities promote fine motor coordination: the movements of the smaller muscles of the body.

Let the learner touch the top of his head. Tell him that what he is feeling is hair. Hair is soft.

Let the learner use chalk to practice drawing lines/ “hair” on an outdoor surface. Cut out the picture of the face (that has been provided for this activity). Place a clothing peg on each of the five indicated lines on the picture. When done, show the learner how to remove the pegs. Once he has removed all of them, show him how to open one and then place it on the picture himself. (You will need to hold the picture as he does so.)

Activity 1.8 The learner’s art might not resemble anything recognisable (as pictured below). Nevertheless, let him have fun and freedom as he expresses himself. That’s what this activity is all about!

1.8 Yellow (Liquorice, icing sugar, water, mixing bowl, Marie biscuits) 



Open a packet of liquorice. Show the learner a yellow one. Let him group all of the other yellow sweets together. Make a glue like paste by mixing a little bit of icing sugar with water. Cover the surface of a Marie biscuit with the paste and let the learner place sweets on it, creating an edible masterpiece.

1.9 Handprints (Tray, yellow paint, paper) 

Fill a tray with yellow paint. Let the learner feel the paint. Describe its texture to him (“it feels smooth, soft and wet”). © Edusense All rights reserved. This document may only be used by bona-fide Edusense subscribers. www.edusense.co.za stacey.edusense.sa@gmail.com



All About Me

Cover the palms of his hands and fingers with the paint. Show him how to make handprints on a blank piece of paper (or smear yellow paint all over the page if he prefers to instead).

1.10 Mirror art (Mirror, whiteboard marker) 

Let the learner use a whiteboard marker to draw a picture on a mirror.

Mathematical concept forming activities

Age: 2-3

Activity 1.10 At ages 2-3 many learners will be able to draw lines, circles and swirls. At ages 3-4 many learners will be able to draw shapes, crosses as well as abstract shapes that represent people. They may begin to describe their drawings too.

1.11 Big and small (Yellow play dough) 





Make yourself small. Get down onto your haunches, fold your arms over your legs. Bring your chin in towards your chest. Tell the learner to pretend that he is a ball too. Explain that you are a big ball and he is a small one. Create two yellow spheres with play dough. One should be large and the other one small. Point to the large one. Tell the learner that it is a big ball. Point to the smaller one, explain that it is a small ball. Let the learner flatten the balls with the palms of his hands. Describe the shape of the balls now. (“They are as flat as pancakes. They look like circles now.”)

Activity 1.11 Playing with play dough and tearing paper are activities that should precede using a scissor. It improves the coordination that the proper use of a scissor requires.

1.12 Yellow sticks (Coffee tin, lid, knife, coloured popsicle sticks )  

Activity 1.12

Cut a variety of slits into the lid of an old Coffee can. Place a variety of different coloured popsicle sticks in front of the learner. Hold a yellow one up. Ask the learner to hand you the other sticks that are yellow too.

Did you know that sorting and classifying objects help children to notice how items are alike and different? This awareness is vital for learning mathematics.

All About Me

Assist the learner in placing the sticks into the lid holes/ slits.

Auditory perception 1.13 Listen to find (DIY Rattle) 





Show the learner a rattle. Let him listen to the sound it makes when you shake it. Let him have a turn at shaking it too. Ask the learner to wait in a certain area of the home as you hide. Let him come and look for you when he hears the sound of the rattle. Shake it constantly, until he finds you. Let the learner have a turn at hiding and then shaking the rattle.

Age: 2-3

Activity 1.13 This activity focuses on auditory figure-ground discrimination: the learner’s ability to distinguish between relevant and irrelevant auditory stimulation.

Activity 1.13 For safety reasons you may want to close the doors to all the rooms that the learner shouldn't enter unsupervised.

Poem time 1.14 My Shadow

More activity ideas:

When I stand in the sun My shadow stands so tall But when I go into the shade I have no shadow at all No shadow short No shadow tall There is no shadow of me at all
