he city of Edwardsville will soon get a new venue for arts and entertainment.

The Wildey Theatre, located in the city’s downtown, is expected to reopen in April, 2011. In 2009, after no private investors fit the bill, the city agreed to renovate the historic facility on its own. It is now under construction, and the city is in the process of putting together a list of events that will fill the theater’s stage for months to come. According to city Alderman and Wildey Theatre Development Committee Chair Rich Walker, the plan is to present a wide array of family programming to appeal to the entire community. Walker said the plan is to fill the theatre with movies, performing arts, speaking engagements, parties and more. He said they want to set the theatre apart by offering classic,

January 6, 2011

art, travel and children’s films and present highly acclaimed second run films that would not otherwise be shown in Edwardsville. “The Wildey is not meant to compete with large movie-plexes by showing first run films,” Walker

said. “Instead, seeing a film at the Wildey will be much like it was in the 1940s and 1950s. The movie palace experience will be the attraction that sets the Wildey Theatre apart from other film presentations in the region. Instead,

patrons will find performance that includes news reels, cartoons, historic trailers and period music played before and after each performance.” He added, ”Programming at the Wildey will draw people from

the surrounding region as will the opportunity to tour the theatre and learn more about its history. Visitors will witness firsthand the ‘golden age’ of movies through guided tours of the Wildey, short presentations of vintage film clips and a virtual museum display in the lobby showcasing the facility’s history.” In addition, Walker said the Wildey will be able to host other public and private events from speaking engagements to special events. “When the renovation work is complete, the Wildey Theatre will be a professionally staffed, multipurpose facility equipped for cultural, entertainment, educational, business, community and nearly every other type of public or private event. Only this way will the Wildey truly offer something for everyone.” The theatre will seat approximately 325 people. Its official opening date has been set for April 12, 2011 – the 102nd anniversary of when the Wildey first opened. To learn more about the Wildey visit www.wildeytheatre.com.

Frozen soldiers Local veterans recall the Battle of the Bulge By BILL TUCKER Of The Edge Go outside tonight and, using only a shovel, dig a hole in the frozen ground, about four feet deep and four feet across. Find a friend and each of you put on two pairs of socks, underwear, long pants, gloves, a stocking cap, a t-shirt, a cotton shirt, a jacket and a wool coat. Make sure to pile as much snow around the hole as you can and let some fall into it. Don't have a hot meal for four days – just some crackers and cheese, maybe a candy bar. Take one blanket – nothing else – and sleep in the hole with your friend. Do it for one night. Edwardsville's George Kottwitz has done it – and for more than one night. Kottwitz was one of the more then 600,000 Americans who fought in the Battle of the Bulge, a colossal showdown with the German Army in the snow-covered hills of Belgium. By most measurements, the winter of 1944-45 was the most brutal seen in Europe during the 20th century. The weather was bad – more than a half-million Germans made it worse. On Dec. 16, 1944, knowing that foul weather would keep allied planes on the ground, Adolph Hitler launched his last, desperate gamble of the war, pouring men and machines into a thinly held front that stretched 80 miles from north to south through Belgium's Ardennes Forest. American troops were rushed to the region, looking to plug the gap. Their effort took until Jan. 30 and cost them 19,000 lives. Another 47,000 U.S. soldiers were wounded and three area veterans of the battle believe frostbite was a bigger culprit than enemy bullets. Kottwitz was in his mid-20s in 1944 as he served as a Staff Sgt. in the 11th Armored Division of Gen. George Patton's Third Army. He manned a machine gun on a half-track and entered the Bulge on Dec. 30, having been rushed to the area after spending Christmas in England. "We had a lot of snow," Kottwitz said as he looked back on the events of 66 years ago. As a diversion to the dirty business of war, Kottwitz played a field organ when his unit was able to have church service. That was tough in the Bulge. "Very cold," he said. "I had frozen finger tips and frozen earlobes. Try to play an organ at church service with frozen finger tips. It's almost impossible." Battling the Germans was sporadic over the battle's six-week span, but the cold was constant. "It was really cold. There was no way to get out of the weather," said Kent Stephens of Collinsville. Now 87, Stephens served with the 101st Field Artillery of the 26th Division. He was in Belgium that deadly winter and still can't believe so many Americans came out of it alive. "I wonder how we all survived. Not only did you have the Germans shooting at you, you had to keep moving so you didn't freeze to death," Stephens said. Temperatures and snow often measured in feet, not inches, were constant enemies. American soldiers resorted to urinating on their weapons to keep the moving parts from freezing. "It was miserable. I don't know how we survived," said Henry Calbreath, an 86-year-old veteran who now lives Collinsville. "I wasn't worried about the Germans. I was worried about the cold weather." Calbreath served in the infantry – the foot-sloggers – and survived the Bulge from almost the beginning.

Edwardsville resident George Kottwitz, a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge, displays the jacket and cap he wore as a member of the U.S. Army in 1944. The days were tough. Brief fights punctuated long hours of boredom – sitting, waiting, watching. If an outfit had moved, it had to dig in again and that was no easy task. "Wherever you were, you'd dig a hole," Kottwitz said. "In frozen ground, that was real fun." And while the days were bad, the nights were worse as the men climbed in their foxholes in an effort – generally not successful – to get some sleep. "Two in a foxhole – hopefully," Kottwitz said. "It was a little bit better, a little bit warmer." The men did what they could, scrounging blankets and cutting logs for cover as they sought any kind of warmth. But often, it was simply a matter of snuggling with your buddy. "You got as close as you could to one another," Calbreath said. Sometimes, nothing worked. "A buddy and I were in a foxhole together," Kottwitz said. "We checked on another foxhole the next morning and there was a guy frozen to death. Not a mark on him." With 18 to 20 inches of snow on the ground and temperatures dipping near 0, no amount of clothing was enough. "I had a field jacket and an overcoat over the top," Kottwitz said. "We wore shoe-packs – short boots – which is fine as far as weather is concerned, but as far as walking it was a joke. They had no soles." Calbreath was lucky enough to have a pair of galoshes which kept his feet dry, although not terribly warm. "During the day, I kicked the bark off a lot of trees to try to keep my feet warm," he said. Stephens wasn't as fortunate. "You put on anything you could," he said. "You had a hard time keeping your socks dry." Despite the abundance of wood available in the area, fires weren't welcome as they created smoke, which in turn created targets. "You couldn't have a fire when you needed one," Kottwitz said. "Daytime you could probably have one if we stayed in one spot long enough." With few fires, the opportunities for the men to enjoy a hot

meal were few and far between. Calbreath remembers eating real food just "two or three times a week." For Kottwitz, the opportunities were even fewer. "After about three weeks, they'd pull you back, you'd get your relief and get a hot meal," he said. Kottwitz was born in Gasconade County, Mo., and after a brief career as a farmer he worked for the Illinois Terminal and Wabash railroads. He and his wife Martha have three grown children and he still retains the sense of humor that has made him something of a local celebrity. "I'm happy, I'm healthy," he said. "My legs aren't too good, but that's the way it is when you're 91 years old." Kottwitz survived the Battle of the Bulge, but remembers what a struggle it was, facing the Germans in the bonecracking cold. "He's out there, you're out here. He tries to get you, you try to get him," he said. "We had quite a few people killed the first couple of weeks." Another problem – if the G.I.s didn't face enough of them – was the handful of German soldiers who donned American uniforms and spread panic throughout the region. Kottwitz remembers how he and his comrades dealt with such situations. "The enemy was in American uniforms. You couldn't tell," he said. "So you asked questions – 'What's the capital of Arkansas?' The Germans wouldn't know that." Through it all, the backdrop of the battle resembled a Christmas card. Kottwitz remembers being impressed by the Belgium countryside – to a point. "It is pretty – if there isn't a war going on," he said. The Battle of the Bulge, despite early German successes, ended with an American victory that helped bring the war in Europe to a close. The bulge was erased 66 years ago, but for those who were there, it's still not over. Calbreath said the recent snows are all too familiar. "It brings back memories," he said. "When it gets about October, my feet get cold. My feet were about as close as they could get to frozen."

Like geocaching, each cache has a set of coordinates that are plugged into the GPS navigator and used by the explorer to search for the treasure. All the information needed, including the clues, coordinates and GPS rentals, can be found at www. VisitAlton.com/EagleCaching, or by visiting the Alton Visitor’s Center at 200 Piasa St. in Downtown Alton. Visitors can head out to view the eagles on their own or take part in some of the traditional eagle watching events in the region, including eagle meet & greets, eagle watching tours and live bird demonstrations. Events take place nearly every weekend and throughout the week, from January through March. Plus, most of the events in the region are free of charge. People People planner Quad Cities to host Titanic exhibit On April 15, 1912, Titanic, the world’s largest ship, sank in the Atlantic after colliding with an iceberg claiming more than 1,500 lives and subsequently altering the world’s confidence in modern technology. Nearly 99 years later, the Putnam Museum & IMAX Theatre in Davenport, Iowa, will pay tribute to the tragedy which continues to resonate through Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, where more than 125 legendary artifacts conserved from the Ship’s debris field are showcased offering visitors a poignant look at this iconic Ship and its passengers. Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, on display March 13-June 26, 2011, has been designed with a focus on the legendary Titanic’s compelling human stories as best told through authentic artifacts and extensive room re-creations. Perfume from a maker who was traveling to New York to sell his samples, china etched with the logo of the elite White Star Line, even pieces of the Ship itself -- these and many other authentic objects offer haunting, emotional connections to lives abruptly ended or forever altered. “We are honored to be able to bring this acclaimed world-class Exhibition to the Quad Cities community,” said Kim Findlay, president and CEO of the Putnam Museum and IMAX Theatre. “It is truly an iconic piece of history, and to have Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at the Putnam Museum on its 99th anniversary is a privilege.” E x h i b i t v i s i t o r s a re q u i c k l y drawn back in time to 1912 upon e n t r a n c e , a s e a c h re c e i v e s a replica boarding pass of an actual passenger aboard Titanic. RMS Titanic, Inc. is the only company permitted by law to recover objects from the wreck of Titanic. The Company was granted Salvor-in-Possession rights to the wreck site of Titanic by a United States federal court in 1994 and has conducted seven research and recovery expeditions to the Titanic rescuing more than 5,500 artifacts. As depicted in the 1997 Academy Award-winning movie “ Ti t a n i c , ” m o r e t h a n 1 , 5 0 0 passengers and crew members perished during the ship’s maiden voyage, just four days after it launched. The ship sank in the early hours of April 15, 1912, less than three hours after colliding with an iceberg in the North Atlantic. Only about 700 people survived. The Titanic had just 20 lifeboats — and most of them left the sinking ship with far fewer passengers than their capacity would have allowed. When the Titanic sank, it was not seen again for more than 70 years, until oceanographers Robert Ballard and Jean Louis Michel discovered the shipwreck site in a

joint U.S./French expedition Sept. 1, 1985. Along with the exhibit, the Putnam Museum & IMAX Theatre will bring back the movie, “Ghosts of the Abyss,” a documentary that takes viewers under the sea to witness the wreckage recovery project. Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill to perform at The Pageant By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge

W

here did Lauryn Hill go? Or should I say, Ms. Lauryn Hill. At least that is how the latest press release introduced her – as “Ms.” Be that as it may, she was at the top of her game 10 years ago, winning Grammys galore, selling millions of albums and selling out concerts. Then, quiet.

January 6, 2011

Actually, let’s back up a bit. Sometime in the early ‘90s, I was watching “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit,” you know, one of those Whoopee Goldberg movies where she is a call girl hiding out from the “bad guys” by posing as a nun and living in a convent. In the second movie in the series, Goldberg’s character becomes a choir director and music teacher to an inner city class of students. Although the story was a bit far fetched, it was quite enjoyable, mostly because of a young actress playing the part of “Rita Louise Watson,” aka, Lauryn Hill. A very young Lauryn Hill. I was amazed by this young woman’s voice and singing style. At that time I felt she should be a star. Fast forward a little bit. One of my sons were watching the Grammy Awards and I see this group singing a funked-up version of Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly.” I mentioned to my son, “Hey,

that singer looks a lot like that girl from Sister Act 2.” He informs me that it is Lauryn Hill and the group is called The Fugees. I looked up Lauryn Hill, and too my amazement, it was the same girl from the movie. Fast forward a bit more. I hear that Lauryn Hill left the Fugees and is releasing a solo album. This album became “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” An amazing project that sold millions, she was nominated 10 times for 1999 Grammy Awards, she won five of those, including “Album of the Year.” She briefly joined back up with the Fugees in the mid 2000s, but it was short lived. Since that time, not much has been heard from her. She is now the mother of five children and has reportedly been writing music and recording with a number of different artists. In September of this year, Hill’s duet with Ronald Isley of the Isley Brothers, called “Close To You,” was leaked online and made it onto the Billboard chart, just from word of mouth. Now, The Pageant has announced that Ms. Lauryn Hill will be appearing in concert on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011. Doors will open at 7 p.m., show will begin at 8 p.m. A special guest will be opening for Hill, but has not yet been named. Tickets are on sale at The Pageant Box Office, Suite 100 at The Pageant, 6161 Delmar Blvd., in St. Louis. Tickets are $53 for general admission for all ages; $63 for reserved balcony for age 21 and up. You can also purchase tickets through Ticketmaster at www. ticketmaster.com or call 800-745-3000.

Death leaves just four Trapp Family Singers HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) — Agathe von Trapp, a member of the musical family whose escape from Nazi-occupied Austria was the basis for “The Sound of Music,” has died, a longtime friend said Dec. 29. Von Trapp, 97, d i e d Tu e s d a y at a hospice in the Baltimore suburb of To w s o n a f t e r s u f f e r i n g congestive Von Trapp heart failure in November, said Mary Louise Kane. Kane and von Trapp lived together for five decades and ran a kindergarten at the Sacred Heart Catholic parish in nearby Glyndon until 1993. seven children by his first wife, Agathe Whitehead von Trapp, were the basis for the singing family in the 1959 play and 1965 film, which won the Oscar for best picture. The widowed captain had three more children with his second wife, Maria Augusta Kutschera. They performed together as the Trapp Family Singers. Agathe, a guitarist, was represented in the film by 16-

going-on-17 Liesl, played by C h a r m i a n C a r r. B u t A g a t h e was far more reserved than the outgoing Liesl, Kane said. Although Agathe admired the movie, she felt it misrepresented her father as too strict and not as the loving, caring parent he was, Kane said. “She cried when she first saw it because of the way they portrayed him,” Kane said. “She said that if it had been about

another family she would have loved it.” Von Trapp wrote her memoir, “Memories Before and After The Sound of Music,” published in September by Harper Paperbacks, to set the record straight, Kane said. J o h a n n e s v o n Tr a p p , t h e youngest of the children, said Agathe was a private person who

also was a talented sketch artist. He said she will be buried in the spring at a cemetery at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vt. Agathe’s death leaves four surviving members of the Trapp Family Singers: Maria von Trapp, 96; Rosmarie von Trapp, 81; Eleonore “Lorli” von Trapp Campbell, 79; and Johannes, 71.

Religion Memphis church keeps on keeping on MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Consider it the Teflon church. St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Downtown Memphis has survived 140 years and more than its share of close calls — including deadly disease, urban sprawl and natural disasters. “We’ve survived a lot,” said Ron Bezon, head of the church’s soup kitchen ministry. The three-story, red-brick Gothic Revival building is situated at the southern border of the Pinch District. The area, north of Poplar Avenue and east of The Pyramid, was a melting pot for immigrants during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Irish immigrants founded St. Peter in 1840, said Jane Scharding-Smedley, who leads tours there. But an estimated 1,400 Germans had settled in Memphis, many unable to speak English. They wanted a spiritual leader who spoke their native tongue. So some of St. Peter’s leaders helped give life to St. Mary’s. Franciscans bought the property for the current site in 1864, laying the cornerstone that fall. In 1870, a Nashville bishop traveled west to dedicate what was initially called the St. Mary’s German Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception, at 155 Market near Third Street. The Franciscans, who took charge, excelled at carpentry. They hand-carved pews still used today and a detailed carving of Jesus and the

Cheap land helps draw Amish people to rural northern Missouri SCHUYLER COUNTY, Mo. (AP) — The abundance of cheap land is drawing Amish people to rural northern Missouri. About 10,000 Amish now call Missouri home, with many of them relocating to Schuyler County in a sparsely populated area at the Iowa border. The majority of the nation’s 250,000 Amish still live in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana. But among states with more than 1,000 Amish, Missouri trailed only New York and Minnesota in the rate of population growth in the last year, according to a study by the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. Last Supper, part of the main altar. Sections of the church were still under construction when a wave of yellow fever cut a destructive swath through the city in 1873. Many of the sick were brought to the doorsteps of St. Mary’s, where there was a makeshift hospital. By the end of 1879, about a dozen of the parish’s priests and nuns had given their lives helping to save others, said Father Eric Peterson, the church’s pastor. In spite of its resilience, a century later the bishop wanted to demolish the parish, which was aging and adjacent to a dilapidated public housing project, Peterson said. One morning, parishioners came to pray and found the church doors padlocked. Undeterred, they began singing “The Bells of St. Mary.” St. Mary’s supporters campaigned to save it, eventually winning the church a designation as a historical site, killing plans to bulldoze it. Or, as Bezon put it, the church “dodged another bullet.” Among St. Mary’s most cherished features are the ornate, jewel-toned, German-made, stained-glass panels. “A lot of people said that’s the only thing that saved them,” the pastor said. “We were lucky once again.” Three years later, a fire leveled First United Methodist Church at Second and Poplar. Strong winds blew embers onto nearby buildings, leaving them heavily damaged. Winds at that time of day typically blew in the direction of nearby St. Mary’s, but that day the gusts huffed in the opposite direction. The church also has weathered financial storms. In the 1950s, the number of congregants and, in turn, donations, waned after many city dwellers moved to the suburbs and found closer parishes. St. Mary’s had to shut down its school due to budget cuts, Bezon said. But church officials always found a way to continue the soup kitchen ministry, which began in 1870. Financial woes have resurfaced in recent years with the recession. Five years ago, the parish spent $300,000 to shore up the windows, adding a protective outer pane. It was part of a $3.2 million renovation that included expansions to the soup kitchen, parish hall and educational rooms as well as structural upgrades. During the past few months, the church has had to stop paying $19,000 a month on the principal of its loan, and is now losing

thousands a month in interest, the pastor said. Church officials are aware of their vulnerability. Bezon said he knows the historical designation, which spared the church from development, can’t cement its survival during financial struggles. But Peterson is optimistic, citing a membership that has grown from 76 to 350 families since he assumed leadership in 2002. “We’re growing, which is good, but we’re still in debt,” the pastor said. “We’ll definitely overcome this. It’s God’s church and we put it in His hands.” St. Mary’s Catholic Church has a long history of helping the needy in Memphis. In 1870, the Franciscan priests and brothers slept at the church, and woke up one morning to a pounding on the door, said church worker Ron Bezon. A few homeless people were asking for food, so the priests fed them what they could scrounge up. Word spread and more people showed up. The priests started a ministry that is still in operation 140 years later. The St. Mary’s soup kitchen is believed to be the oldest continuous running program in the city, said Bezon, who manages the program. Open six days a week, including Christmas, the soup kitchen feeds about 200 people daily, said Bezon, who arrives at 5:30 a.m. to begin his homemade soups and stews.

said complaints about the Amish have quieted.

“They’re good people,” Austin said. “They’re just accepted.”

Traffic Safety undergoing makeover Corporate and Community Learning’s Traffic Safety program is adding multiple new instructors in addition to an online facelift for 2011. Susan Moore is a former administrative judge from Arizona, who just recently moved back to the Riverbend. She will be teaching all the classes in Edwardsville. Nick Bowman, who has a background in law enforcement, has been teaching the class on and off for a couple years and will be based on the Godfrey campus. The new online system has been in place since September. It allows students to register and print out their certificates all in the same day/night if they choose, as long as they have put in their mandated four hours and passed the necessary test. The system includes measures that ensure that four-hour time block is being spent at the computer, and also that deter cheating. “This class is offered as a condition of student’s supervision after getting a traffic ticket. It’s aimed at 15- to 20-year-olds to keep moving violations off their records,” said Jenn Ciavarella, coordinator of Traffic Safety

January 6, 2011

and Professional Development. “It serves two functions – first, it’s a condition of their supervision. If they go through this class then they get their ticket taken off their permanent record. The other is to be a reminder for students that driving is a privilege they need to take seriously.” The state requirement is for a four-hour class, which can be taken either online or in person. Topics include the stage and restrictions of the Graduated Driver’s License (GDL), how changes in a teen’s brain can translate into risky behavior, and facts about being a safe driver. The class concludes with a test. Those who pass can either print their certificate (online) or receive one in the mail (classroom) to turn into the court of the county where they received the ticket. Classes are offered once a month at three different locations, with upcoming dates in mid-January. Visit www. lc.edu/trafficschool for more information and for a list of upcoming class offerings in Edwardsville, Godfrey and Jerseyville, or contact Ciavarella at (618) 468-5730.

SIU School of Dental Medicine prepares to give kids a smile Dental professionals through the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine (SDM) in Alton are urging parents to bring their qualified children, ages three to 13, to the Give Kids A Smile Day on Friday, Feb. 4, for free examinations, necessary X-rays, cleanings and fluoride treatments, fillings, any necessary extractions and other dental care. Children qualified to participate in the event are those eligible for free and reduced-priced meal programs. Give Kids A Smile Day will last all day, with registration of children to take place from 7:30 a.m.-noon on that Friday at the SDM Gymnasium, Building 281, while care will be administered in the Main Clinic, Building 263, both at 2800 College Ave. The SDM, the Madison District Dental Society, the St. Clair District Dental Society and Lewis and Clark Community College (L&C) are sponsoring the event; professionals and volunteers from the community will participate. “While many area schools provide in-school dental programs, allowing students access to dentists and some dental services, qualified

children who attend Give Kids a Smile Day have the ability to undergo dental work on the spot at no charge, said Dr. Poonam Jain, an associate professor at the SDM and director of Community and Preventive Dentistry for the School. She also is chair of the Feb. 4 event. “Give Kids a Smile is a national program sponsored by the American Dental Association to raise awareness of oral health issues for the underserved children of our country, and to provide dental care for these children on the designated day,” Jain said. “During past years, this event has attracted local dentists, hygienists and dental students, who have helped treat hundreds of children, providing thousands of dollars in free dental treatment.” Activities for children will take place throughout the day on Feb. 4. The L&C Dental Hygiene and Assisting programs will host a “Smile Station” on site, featuring games to help children learn the importance of keeping their teeth clean. While registration for the event is required throughout the morning, dental work will be performed throughout the day. For more information, contact Sherie Gottlob, (618) 4747200, or, by e-mail: sgottlo@siue.edu.

SIUE School of Nursing to offer doctorate in nursing program In a move to address the future needs of the nursing profession, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Nursing is embarking on a new initiative, offering a doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), post-master ’s degree program beginning in the fall. The new degree program, designed to be completed in five-semesters, addresses the new regulations proposed by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Currently, 132 DNP programs, including SIUE’s, are enrolling students at schools of nursing nationwide; while an additional 160 DNP programs are in the planning stages. Kathy Ketchum, assistant dean for graduate programs in the SIUE School of Nursing, explained students will be “immersed in doctoral education through on-campus, week-long intensives, focused coursework, experiential learning, self-assessment and reflection on learning and project management skill development.” SIUE Nursing Dean Marcia Maurer said the DNP will help master ’s-prepared, advanced-practice nurses move to the next level of expertise. “Nurses prepared at the doctorate level will be able to develop practice, organizational, economic and leadership skills,” Maurer said. “Building on their specialty practice, DNP graduates will be poised to become leaders as they design new models of nursing care, use evidence-based knowledge in decisionmaking, better evaluate health care outcomes, identify and manage health care needs of individuals, communities and populations, and use technology and information to create needed change in health care.”

Edison to Host “The Giver” Twelve-year old Jonas lives in a perfect world — no pain, no poverty, no prejudice, no choices. Everyone has an assigned role. Very, very rarely, someone special is selected to hold the memories of all that once was. Jonas is that one. Does he have the strength to face it? Readers of all ages have embraced Lois Lowry’s “The Giver,” a classic of contemporary science fiction and winner of the 1994 Newberry Medal. To date, the book has sold more than 5 million copies. This January, Metro Theater Company and the Edison at Washington University in St. Louis will join forces to produce the St. Louis premier of a powerful stage adaptation by playwright Eric Coble. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, in Edison Theatre and continue through Jan. 23. Each performance will be immediately followed by a discussion exploring provocative questions raised by the story. The play is recommended for adults and young people 10 and over. Tickets are $12 to $16 and are available at the Edison Theatre Box Office or www.metrotix.com. Edison Theatre is located in the university’s Mallinckrodt Center, 6445 Forsyth Blvd. For more information, call the Box Office at (314) 935-6543 or call Metro Theater at (314) 997-6777. The Giver The Giver centers on young Jonas, who has been selected by the elders

January 6, 2011

of his community to become the new Receiver of Memory. The old man known as The Giver has held the memory of all that has been stripped away – poverty, pain, war, strife – and now he must pass on that burden. Little by little, Jonas discovers the community has systematically given up much of what gives life its meaning: Color, music, truth and love. At the end of the story, Jonas faces a decision that will define him and set a path toward hope. “The Giver is a modern classic that should be read and discussed by any thinking person, regardless of age,” says Tim Wadham, assistant director for Youth and Community Services for the St. Louis County Library, which will co-sponsor a talk by Lowry on April 15. “This is a book that brings generations together.” Carol North, artistic director of Metro Theater Company — who directs the cast of 11 — notes that, “I am approaching this transformative play with all the respect and humility it deserves. Each of us at Metro and at Edison want the profound message of The Giver to reach all who see it.” Charlie Robin, executive director of Edison, concurs. “While this story was new to me, I was thrilled to discover the excitement and impact it has had on the younger generations over the past 17 years. This engaging tale asks all the right questions and provides a forum for discussion that will keep us all talking for years to come.” The cast is led by Nicholas Kryah, resident artist and technical director at Metro Theater Company, in the title role; and by Mitchell List and Christian Probst, who share the role of Jonas. (On Jan. 22, during the run of The Giver, Kryah will celebrate the 5,000th stage performance of his remarkable 34-year career.) Completing the cast are Stephanie Strohman, David Wassilak, Elijah Brown, Sydney Dorton, Berklea Going, Stephanie Koo, Ian Miller and Anna Nielsen. Music is by composer and percussionist Lance Garger, a guest artist with Metro Theatre. Choreographer is Beckah Reed. The design team includes Lou Bird, Dunsi Dai, Stephanie Strohman, John Wylie and Rusty Wandall. Sarah Rugo is production manager. Additional Events In conjunction with the performances, Metro Theater and Edison will present a number of attendant events organized with a series of community partners. Five cultural institutions — the Missouri Botanical Garden, the Missouri History Museum, the Saint Louis Science Center, the Saint Louis Zoo and Washington University’s Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum — will organize post-show field trips for students. Each trip will extend key themes explored in the play. The trips are free but pre-registration is required. For details, call (314) 9976777. In addition, leading up to opening

night, HEC-TV will air a four-part series on The Giver. For dates and times, visit www.hectv.org. During the run of performances, Metro Theater will honor eight St. Louis individuals and one local organization for their service to the community. Honorees will be: Sister Cathy Doherty (Jan. 7), Scott Emanuel (Jan. 8), Rick Sems (Jan. 9), Lisa Orden Zarin (Jan, 14), Elinor Nelson (Jan, 15), Maria Teresa Maldonado (Jan. 16), Susan Uchitelle (Jan. 21) and the St. Louis Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and its volunteers (Jan. 23). For information about each, visit www.metrotheatercompany.org. On April 15, Lowry will deliver the Arbuthnot Honor Lecture for the St. Louis County Library. For details, visit www.slcl.org. Organizers Metro Theater Company is nationally recognized as one of America’s finest professional theaters for young people and families. Founded in 1973, the Company has produced more than 29 original works for audiences totaling nearly two million people. Metro Theater Company has toured to 41 states and appeared in international festivals in Canada, Italy, Japan and Taiwan. Thousands of school students benefit each year from touring performances and workshops conducted by Metro’s teaching artists. Metro Theater Company makes theater arts

alive and accessible to young people and adults, and assists educators in making learning more effective and engaging for their students. The Edison serves both Washington University and the St. Louis community by providing the highest caliber national and international artists in music, dance and theater, performing new works as well as innovative interpretations of classical material not otherwise seen in St. Louis. Focusing on presentations that are interdisciplinary, multicultural and/or experimental, Edison Theatre presents work intended to challenge, educate and inspire. Edison Theatre programs are made possible with support from the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency; the Regional Arts Commission, St. Louis; the MidAmerica Arts Alliance; the National Endowment for the Arts; and private contributors.

D.A.R.E. starts new year on right track By ANN NICCUM Of The Edge

T

he Edwardsville Police Department has just received the first donation for its 20th Annual D.A.R.E. Benefit Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show.

On Tuesday, Piston Pushers Classic Car Club of Illinois and Missouri President Rocky Collins, Secretary Diana Collins and Treasurer Fred Matt Jr. presented Police Chief James Bedell, D.A.R.E. Officers Mike Collins and Chris Williams and show co-coordinators Sarah and Merle Yates with a $250 check. Sarah Yates said the Piston Pushers Classic Car Club, of which she is also a local member, has been a long-time supporter of the program and the show. Yates said they wanted to be the first to get the campaign started for the 20th Annual D.A.R.E. Benefit Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show. Collins and Williams both said they were thankful for the Club’s donation. “The Edwardsville Police Department D.A.R.E. Officers greatly appreciate the many years of support for our annual D.A.R.E. Car Show by the Piston Pushers Classic Car Club. We understand there are many different communities that make up the car club. We are grateful for the shared interest and concern to keep the future of our nation free from drugs and violence,” Collins and Williams said in a joint statement. “It is because of the car clubs commitment that we are able

January 6, 2011

to raise the money needed to offer the educational materials to ensure that the children of our community are presented with a proven drug abuse educational program. "We are also appreciative of the donations that the Piston Pushers have made to the Car Show in support of the Car Club Award. We look forward to your continued support during our 20th Annual Car Show.” Yates said the organizers have just started fundraising for the 20th Annual Show. “Our goal this year is $20,000 and 500 vehicle entrants,” Yates said. “We know this is a big goal, but with starting early we hope to see many others follow through with cash donations, items for the silent auction and the attendance prizes.” Yates said the organization raised $15,000 at its 15th Annual Show – the goal they set that year – and they are hoping to meet their goal again. She said another goal they have set is to have more people from the community involved in not only attendance, but in volunteering at the event. Yates added the show, and how much it can support the D.A.R.E. program, depends upon donations and volunteerism from the community. She said the show supports the city’s anti-drug D.A.R.E. program, also known as Drug Abuse Resistance Education, where police officers teach students about the dangers of drugs. The program is conducted in all of District 7 schools and parochial schools. The Piston Pushers Classic Car Club, based out of O’Fallon, has members from all across the area.

Yates said members from locations including Maryville, Troy, Granite City, Millstadt and Mascoutah came out to help them put on the D.A.R.E. Show last year. According to Diana Collins, the club was started by a group of boys in 1955 by doing good things with the Boys Club of America with the purpose of promoting public safety and assisting motorists stranded along side the road. “Today, we do car cruises and car shows in our area to raise money for our club operations and for charity,” Collins said. Collins said the group is a non-profit organization that continues to help others through volunteerism and donations. This year alone, she said they have donated more than $3,000 to local charities and have helped local organizations raise an additional $12,000 by hosting car shows with them. Along with helping out the local D.A.R.E. program, the club has also assisted many others this year, such as giving veteran’s families a place to stay while visiting loved ones hospitalized at St. Louis’ VA Medical Center, supporting children at Shriner’s Hospital in St. Louis, providing kids with uniforms and equipment in Dupo and many more. The annual D.A.R.E. Benefit Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show is typically conducted at Edwardsville High School and it features classic cars, trucks and motorcycles, food, entertainment, music, games, a silent auction and a 50/50 drawing. The last show was hosted in August, 2010. To learn more about how to donate or help with the 2011 Annual D.A.R.E. Benefit Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show, call Yates at 288-9208 or e-mail her at sarahyates7@att.net or contact the EPD at 656-2131. Donations are tax deductible.

Travel Travel briefs Ex-park leaders urge Waterton-Glacier protections HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Eight former park superintendents are pressing the U.S. and Canadian governments to pass protections for areas adjacent to Glacier National Park in Montana and Waterton Lakes National Park just across the border. The former park leaders said in a letter Monday that progress has been made, such as retiring more than 200,000 acres of oil and gas leases outside Glacier. But, they add, more work remains for both governments to protect the ecosystem of world’s first international peace park, dubbed “the crown of the continent.” They urged Canadian leaders to approve a long-standing proposal under government review to expand the Waterton park into British Columbia’s Flathead Valley. They also called on Canada to act on a recommendation by the U.N.’s World Heritage Committee to create a plan that improves wildlife connectivity between WatertonGlacier and Banff National Park. The ex-park superintendents also urged the U.S. Congress to pass legislation that would prohibit new mining and fossil fuel leasing on the park’s western periphery and protect land in the Middle Fork of the Flathead River corridor. The urged Congress to pass the bill before adjournment. “The measure enjoys tremendous local support, and represents a longterm and tangible gift for Glacier on its 100th birthday,” the letter reads. But, “without immediate action, this valuable and worthy endowment to future park visitors will be forced to begin the political process anew in 2011.” Combined, the two parks span 1.1 million acres and host about 2 million visitors a year. “This issue has been on the table for a long time,” retired Glacier Park Superintendent Mick Holm told the Missoulian newspaper. “Every superintendent who signed the letter served while these issues were on the table, and now we’re probably as close as we ever have been to reaching some kind of resolution.” Besides Holm the former Glacier superintendents signing the letter are Dave Mihalic, Gil Lusk, Bob Haraden, Phil Iverson and Bill Briggle. The Waterton Lakes signatories are Merv Syroteuk and Peter Lamb.

Cracker Barrel brings down-home cookin’ to Maine SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Southern-fried restaurant chain

January 6, 2011

Cracker Barrel is finding hungry customers in the land of lobster, steamers and baked beans. Cracker Barrel Old Country Store’s first restaurant in Maine represents the chain’s northernmost foray in the East. And Mainers seem to be taking a shine to the chicken and dumplings, biscuits and sawmill gravy, and other southern staples like turnip greens, pork barbecue and grits. Well, scratch the grits. “I’ll try anything once — but I’m not trying those grits. No way,” chuckled Sandra Butler of South Portland, after giving fried okra and turnip greens a try. Southern cooking knows no boundaries, apparently. The South Portland restaurant was running 25 percent ahead of projections when it opened last month, the company says. Decorated with antiques, rocking chairs and checkerboards, the restaurant presents a familiar face to New Englanders who’ve traveled through Florida and other parts of the South where Cracker Barrels are a highway fixture. And they’ve developed a loyal following, even far north of the Mason-Dixon line.

Mall. A 28-foot-tall statue of the slain civil rights leader will be dedicated between the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials on Aug. 28, near the spot where he delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech 48 years earlier. Several destinations are hoping that attention from celebrities will bring them more visitors in the new year. Australia spent $4 million to host Oprah Winfrey and 300 of her fans on a weeklong trip down under, but government officials say they got tourism advertising worth many millions more in return. Alaska is hoping for a similar benefit from the TLC series “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” and other cable shows showcasing the 49th state. “They have raised the profile, awareness and ultimately the interest in coming to Alaska,” said Ron Peck, president of the Alaska Tourism Industry Association. Overall, travel in 2010 began t o s l o w l y i n c re a s e f ro m t h e recessionary downturn of 2009, and many destinations are forecasting continued improvements in visitor numbers and revenues in 2011. Las Vegas was among the hardest hit

by the weak economy, but visitation numbers and casino revenues were both up slightly in the last few months. Vegas was also named the No. 1 domestic destination based on 2011 booking data reported by managers and agents from Travel Leaders, one of the top 10 travel agencies in the U.S. And in March, Vegas will get a shot of publicity among younger travelers when MTVu hosts its annual spring break party there. The hotel pools of Sin City will be a departure from more typical beach spring break destinations like Mexico, which has gotten bad publicity from drug violence, and the Florida Gulf Coast, where tourism tanked last year after the oil spill. Whether college students will lead the way back to beaches in the Florida Panhandle in the new year remains an open question, but New Orleans is expecting more spring breakers in 2011 because Mardi Gras happens to fall during the second week of March. At the same time, the city is launching a new tourism campaign to attract more visitors

Travel 2011: London for royal wedding, N.Y. for 9/11 NEW YORK (AP) — Anniversaries, events, celebrities and the economy will influence travel in 2011, from the royal wedding in London, to the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11th attacks in New York. London is sure to be crowded for the April 29 wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. “If Charles and Diana got 600,000 people who came into London for that wedding, I could see a million for this one,” said travel expert Pauline Frommer, creator of the Pauline Frommer Guides. New York has also turned up on hot lists for 2011, including the No. 1 city in Lonely Planet’s “Best in Travel 2011” guidebook. “For all of New York, 11 September 2011 will be a defining moment,” wrote the publisher ’s U.S. travel editor Robert Reid. A Sept. 11 memorial, with reflecting pools set above the footprints of the World Trade Center, is expected to open in time for the anniversary of the attacks. The 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War is also being marked this year. One of the largest commemorations takes place July 21-24 in Manassas, Va., where the war ’s first major land battle took place. A historical re-enactment there is expected to draw as many as 15,000 participants. Crowds are also expected to turn out for the opening in Washington D.C. of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial on the National

ages 18-35, according to Kelly Schulz, spokeswoman for the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau. In 2010, the biggest theme park news was the opening of a Harry Potter attraction at the Universal theme park. This year, theme park fans can look forward to the opening of Legoland Florida at the former Cypress Gardens theme park in Winter Haven, Fla. At Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., the big news for 2011 will be the debut of a new ride called “The Little Mermaid — Ariel’s Undersea Adventure.” Though “The Little Mermaid” movie dates to 1989, Disneyland spokeswoman Michele Himmelberg says “she’s still one of the most popular princesses.” Visitors will ride in a colorful clamshell through special effects designed to make you feel like you’re underwater; the octopus villain Ursula will also be featured in the ride. Other Disney news for 2011 includes the launch of the new Disney Dream cruise ship, which begins sailings Jan. 26.

QuickGlance Movie Reviews

“Tron: Legacy”

Hugely high-tech and forward-thinking in its day, “Tron” now looks cheesy and quaint in retrospect, with its blocky graphics and simplistic blips and bleeps. The original film from 1982 was all about the possibility of technology and the human imagination, and the adventures that could result from marrying the two, but only now are the computergenerated effects available to render this digital world in its fullest potential. Hence, we have a sequel, which is in 3-D (of course) but is actually best viewed in IMAX 3-D. The whole point of the story and the aesthetics are that they’re meant to convey an immersive experience. We’re supposed to feel just as trapped inside this challenging and dangerous electronic realm as the film’s characters. And at over two hours, we are indeed trapped — there is no justifiable reason for such a lengthy running time. While director Joseph Kosinski’s feature film debut is thrilling and cool-looking for about the first half, its races, games and visuals eventually grow repetitive, which only draws attention to how flimsy and preposterous the script is from Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. “Tron: Legacy” is a mishmash of pop culture references and movie rip-offs, Eastern philosophy and various religions, and one insanely cute, strategically placed Boston terrier. And with the return of Jeff Bridges, there’s plenty of Dude-ishness for you fans of “The Big Lebowski.” RATED: PG for sequences of sci-fi action violence and brief mild language. In 3-D and IMAX 3-D. RUNNINT TIME: 125 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING Two and a half stars out of four.

“Yogi Bear”

I n s p i re d b y A r t C a r n e y ’ s E d N o r t o n f ro m “ T h e Honeymooners” and originally voiced by Daws Butler, Yogi Bear has always had an intelligence that surpasses that of your typical clawed mammalia. He has finally gotten his own movie — in 3-D, no less — and so it comes with little surprise but still some disappointment that “Yogi Bear” is a bland pic-a-nic, indeed. There he is, in trademark green tie and white collar and voiced by Dan Aykroyd, with the bow-tied Boo Boo (Justin Timberlake) at his side. Of course, this being the highly advanced 21st century, simple animation won’t do, so we must suffer through the mediocre, lifeless computergenerated animation of this treasured twosome. They’re in an otherwise live-action film with Tom Cavanagh (“Ed”) as Park Ranger Smith and Anna Farris as Rachel

Johnson, a documentary filmmaker visiting Jellystone Park, most likely trying to beat Ken Burns to the punch. A fight ensues to save Jellystone from greedy politicians (Andrew Daly and Nate Corddry) and the whole ordeal is over in little more than an hour and a quarter. Directed by effects veteran Eric Brevig, it’s blessedly brief, and Aykroyd and Timberlake supply good voice work. But Yogi deserves better jokes and more wildness in which to roam free. Can’t a bear get some lunch around here? RATED: PG for some mild rude humor. RUNNING TIME: 80 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“Little Fockers”

Meet the latest in Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller ’s comedy franchise. Grit your teeth through the fairly short though agonizing duration of its stay. Then wave goodbye in relief as its huge cast of characters departs like the annoying in-laws they are. “Meet the Parents” was a tolerable trifle and “Meet the Fockers” was a bloated bore. But this third installment is tasteless trash, filled with abysmally unfunny gags involving vomit, enemas, erectile dysfunction and the like. Director Paul Weitz delivers a string of dumb episodes as De Niro’s fatherin-law from hell again puts Stiller ’s nervous son-in-law under surveillance. The whole gang returns, including Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand, Owen Wilson, Teri Polo and Blythe Danner, with Jessica Alba, Laura Dern and Harvey Keitel joining the cast. Hopefully, the Fockers will call it quits after this. We don’t need these in-laws coming to visit again. RATED: PG-13 for mature sexual humor throughout, language and some drug content. RUNNING TIME: 98 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

“Somewhere”

In gauzy portraits of privileged isolation, Sofia Coppola has situated her characters in a Tokyo hotel (“Lost in Translation”), the opulent remove of Versailles ( “ M a r i e A n t o i n e t t e ” ) a n d n o w, i n h e r n e w f i l m , a t Los Angeles’ celebrity-infested Chateau Marmont. Though she gently coaxes her characters out of their insulation and toward the outside world, her talent i s i n h e r e y e f o r c l o i s t e re d , d i s a ff e c t e d d e c a d e n c e . “Somewhere,” which won the top prize at the Venice International Film Festival, stars Stephen Dorff as a

famous Hollywood actor, Johnny Marco. He lives at the Chateau Marmont where he lazily and indiscriminately passes the time between dutifully heeding the phone calls of his publicist. Handsome and aloof, he’s living a vapid, easy life. When his 11-year-old daughter Cleo (Elle Fanning) is left with him for weeks, he’s very subtly transformed. Coppola is brilliant at capturing mood, but substance isn’t her game. As she did in “Lost in Translation,” she aims for a sudden rush of meaningfulness at the end of the film, but the weight isn’t there. “Somewhere” ultimately passes like a soft breeze down Sunset. RATED: R for sexual content, nudity and language. RUNNING TIME: 98 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

“True Grit”

One of the most mainstream, crowd-pleasing films Joel and Ethan Coen have ever made. It’s sort of a screwball Western, if you will, with vivid performances a n d s t r i k i n g l y v a s t , p i c t u re s q u e v i s t a s , t h e a l w a y s gorgeous work of the always great Roger Deakins, the Coens’ frequent cinematographer. But it’s a minor entry from the writing-directing brothers, especially when you consider the inventiveness and strength of their canon and the close aesthetic resemblance to “No Country for Old Men,” their masterpiece. While “True Grit” is entertaining, it’s also surprisingly lacking in emotional resonance, as well as the intriguing sense of ambiguity that so often permeates Coen pictures. Only toward the end does it feel like anything is at stake, but at least it’s enjoyable while you’re waiting. Hailee Steinfeld in her film debut is a revelation as Mattie Ross, the 19th-century pioneer teenager who demands vengeance for her father ’s murder. She seeks help from a man she hears has true grit: one-eyed, alcoholic U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn. Jeff Bridges plays the role that earned John Wayne his only Academy Award as gruff and grizzled, a lawman who’s lived a long and well-lubricated life, but who also has attained a certain Zen-like self-possession about it. Matt Damon again proves he can do anything, joining the duo on the trail as a preening Texas Ranger. RATED: PG-13 for some intense sequences of western violence including disturbing images. RUNNING TIME: 110 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

In this publicity image released by Disney, Garrett Hedlund is shown in a scene from “Tron: Legacy.” pop culture references and movie rip-offs, Eastern philosophy and various religions, and one insanely cute, strategically placed Boston terrier. And with the return of Jeff Bridges in the lead role, there’s plenty of Dude-ishness for you fans of “The Big Lebowski.” (At one point he complains, “You’re

messing with my Zen thing, man.”) It’s all giddy, ridiculous fun for a while, set to an ideally integrated techno score by the French duo Daft Punk. But a little of this goes a long way, and eventually you realize there’s not much “there” there, no real point beyond exhilaration.

Bridges’ video game developer Kevin Flynn was aiming for deeper meaning, or at least a new level of consciousness, when he created the Grid all those years ago. Now, his estranged son, Sam (Garrett Hedlund), discovers that’s where Dad’s been all this time — sucked into the Grid and stuck

there for the past two decades. The place Flynn built with high hopes is now dominated by the tyrannical and not even vaguely fascist dictator Clu (also Bridges, digitally tweaked to look like a 35-year-old version of himself), the doppelganger Flynn created to oversee the operation.

Looking back at 2010’s best films By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge 2010 came and went as quickly as a flash of lightning. I still can’t believe it. For many, the year was just another sad reminder of the challenges that the world, and we as Americans, face daily. The road to economic recovery has been long with the end hardly in sight and we continue to be at war, both literally and idealistically, with many other nations. To outweigh this grief I say that now more than ever we need the movies to be inspiring, entertaining, and inviting as a safe refuge. The Great Depression was when movies had their first great heyday after all. I survived awful things in 2010 (Get Him to the Greek and Splice) and also found some to make me excited for the future (Emma Stone becoming a leading lady, DisneyNature’s continued charge at Earth Day Weekend). Unintentionally, I find that I saw as many excellent films this year as last. That total (6) remains an unbalanced number, but an accurate

January 6, 2011

estimation of what got me through a tough year. Here’s a look back: 1. Toy Story 3 - I love the premise, the setup, the execution of this movie so much. The toys were in fine form, the writing was sharp and witty, and, yes, I cried through all of the most intense scenes. This was another great year for animation (see: How to Train Your Dragon). 2. The Social Network - Even those of us not on Facebook can respect the impact of such a dynamic and cheeky picture. Andrew Garfield and Jesse Eisenberg will be stars, but Justin Timberlake proved above all else that he can indeed do anything he wants and do it well. 3. 127 Hours - Harrowing, hilarious, and horrendous stuff blends well in Danny Boyle’s followup to his Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire. James Franco “rocks”, pun intended. 4. Black Swan - Natalie Portman may suffer for her art’s sake, but the arc she goes through in this movie is stellar - particularly that last thirty minutes. 5. Inception - I struggle to

remember it all. Inception was so voluminous that it consumed my mind and senses with its great cast and even greater effects. I’d even wager the success of this movie was the sole reason Matt Damon’s The Adjustment Bureau has been delayed in its release. So that’s five and The King’s Speech makes six. By taking documented events in the life of the British Royal Family and fictionalizing things that happened behind their veil of secrecy (much like 2006’s The Queen), writer David Seidler and director Tom Hooper have given us a magnificent treat. The story spans from 1932 to 1939 and tells of the treatment King George VI (Colin Firth) of England (Queen Elizabeth II’s father) takes for his stuttering from Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). The two clash with each other many times and, yet, forge a lifelong friendship built on respect, duty, and patriotism that warmed me to my toes. Helena Bonham Carter is splendid as the king’s wife. Best movie of the year!

(The King’s Speech runs 130 minutes and is rated R for some language. I give this film four stars out of four.) How can the new year live up to the expectations set by these great movies that came before? Well, digital 3D will continue to expand, giving headaches to some and a little something extra to the rest of us. There are no less than five big budget comic book adaptations hitting the Silver Screen next year (X-Men: The First Class may

be the most promising). Water for Elephants (starring Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson), about the life amidst a circus, looks amazing. But what about those bigdog sequels? We finally get a taste of the end of that abhorrent Twilight series, thank goodness, but we’ll also have to say good-bye to Harry Potter and friends. His final battle with Lord Voldemort will be worth the wait, we’ve been promised. Just so long as it’s better than Part I and 2011 will be just fine.

Calling All Beer Geeks Local trio will open Global Brew Tap House and Lounge By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge

E

dwardsville couple Laura and Ryan High are teaming up with their friend from college, Ryan Lowe, to bring their passion for craft beer to Edwardsville.

The trio plan to open Global Brew Tap House & Lounge in mid to late January at 112 South Buchanan, Suite 1, in Edwardsville which is directly above Wasabi in the Park Plaza shopping center. Laura explained how she met the “Ryans” while she was a student at Eastern Illinois University. “When I was a senior going into my final semester, I got an internship at Barnes Jewish Hospital (in St. Louis),” Laura said. “I called my girlfriend who went to SIUE and I said, 'I need a place to stay.' And she said, 'You can live with me. I live next door to some very fun guys. It’s a very short commute so you’ll be fine.' "That’s where I met Ryan and the other Ryan and we’ve been in Edwardsville ever since.” Self proclaimed “beer geeks” and great friends, Laura said that the three of them love to entertain, which was the inception of Global Brew. “We love to get together and my Ryan and Ryan Lowe have always had this great entrepreneurial sense so they had the great idea to turn something that we all love into something that we could share with other people,” Laura said. “It’s something so different and new in Edwardsville that I think it’s something that a lot of people will be drawn to.” Global Brew Tap House & Lounge will offer a full line of craft beer with more than 200 varieties in bottles and 50 on tap. “Mainly there’s going to be a lot of domestic and a lot of international as well,” Laura said. “So, we’re bringing kind of the whole spectrum when it comes to craft beers in one place.” “You can try a Hefeweizen from Belgium and then you can try an IPA from a small brewery in Missouri,” Laura explained about the wide variety of beer they will carry. “We’re trying to find something that everybody is going to like. If you normally drink whiskey, we’ll find you a beer that will

Beer is bigger than your local domestics and we want to showcase that to people.” Opening Global Brew in the Edwardsville area was an easy decision for the trio. “Edwardsville is such a great area,” Laura said. “It’s a young population of young professionals, young families – we just want to provide a spot for people to get together, have a good beer and have a really good experience having good beer. It’s fun. There’s kind of a beer geeky culture to it. It’s fun to try new things and tell people what you tried.” Global Brew won’t be serving food. They are sticking to what they know best – beer. “We’re not going to have a kitchen because we would have tater tots and macaroni and cheese – none of us can cook,” Laura said with a chuckle. “What’s great is that we’re in such a great location with Wasabi downstairs – Bigelo’s Bistro is down the street – there’s so many great places down in that area.” They hope that they will become “the place” before dinner. “Oh let’s go out to eat. Let’s stop here for a beer before we go. We want to be that place,” Laura said. The design and layout of the tap house will have a “lofty feeling” with “open

ceilings” and stained concrete. Although the establishment has a “suite one” address, the actual establishment is located on the second floor, directly above Wasabi. Customers will enter Global Brew via an entrance next to Wasabi. Once through the doors, an elevator in the building’s lobby will transport guests to the second level and the doors to Global Brew. While a definitive opening date has yet to be set, they are anticipating a mid to late January. Their Facebook page, Global Beer Tap House & Lounge, keeps fans abreast of the construction progress and will post the actual opening date once it is finalized. They are also on Twitter @Globalbrew or watch their Web site, www.globalbrewtaps. com, for updates. Hours are expected to be 3 p.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday; 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. Fridays; 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays. Laura pointed out that their liquor license allows them to extend the weekend’s closing time to 2 a.m. “Right now we have it that we close at 1 a.m.” she said. “But you know you never want to shut down a good party. If my mom taught me anything, it’s never leave a good party early. We’d love to stay open ‘til two. It just depends on the trend.”
