Cervical Cancer A quick test could save your life By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Women are so rushed these days. Pressure to keep our homes a certain way. Pressure to make sure our kids are perfect and do well in school. Pressure to keep our marriages or relationships healthy. Pressure to keep our bodies thin and in shape, our hair looking shiny, our faces looking young and flawless, and the list goes on. There is really little time to concentrate on our well-being. There are a number of health related issues that women need to focus on being proactive in preventing or making sure to check for early warning signs. If we don’t do that for ourselves, no one else is going to. Recently, the Madison County Health Department sent out a reminder that January is Cervical Cancer Awareness month. During this special month, women (and men who care about women) are hopefully going to be made more aware of issues related to cervical cancer and the importance of early detection. In the United States, the Pap test saves the lives of many women who may have died without the test. If detected early, cervical cancer is nearly 100 percent curable! Without the test, there is no way to detect the cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, in 2009, more than 11,270 new cases of invasive cervical cancer are projected to be diagnosed in the United States. Cancer of the cervix is a common cancer in women and occurs when cells in the cervix grow abnormally out of control. Most cases of cervical cancer occur as a result of the HPV infection (Human Papilloma Virus). There are usually no symptoms of cervical cancer, therefore it is very important for women to get regular Pap tests, which can detect precancerous cells in the cervix. New screening guidelines from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology suggest that Pap smears should begin approximately three years after a woman begins having vaginal intercourse, but no later than 21 years of age. Women in their 20s should have a Pap smear every two years, instead of annually as previously recommended. Women in their 30s, who have had three consecutive normal pap smears,

A Gardasil shot, a vaccine created to guard against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which has been found to be a possible cause of cervical cancer. should undergo a screening every three years. Significant risk factors for cervical cancer include: early age at first intercourse, history of multiple sex partners, genital warts or other sexually transmitted disease, smoking,
and women whose mother was given the d ru g D i e t h y l s t i l b e s t ro l ( D E S ) d u r i n g pregnancy to prevent miscarriage. Symptoms usually don’t occur until cancer cells have spread and invaded nearby tissue. One of the most common symptoms is
abnormal bleeding. Other symptoms may include pelvic pain, pain during intercourse and increased vaginal discharge. Most often cervical cancer occurs in women in their 40s and 50s. According to the National Cervical Cancer Coalition, the highest rates of cervical cancer occur in African American and Hispanic women, often because these groups lack access to screenings that could prevent the disease. African American women are twice as likely to die from this cancer as Caucasian women. The Health Department would like to remind people that you can take steps to protect yourself against cervical cancer. It is important to receive regular Pap smears to find potential problems early and get proper treatment to prevent more serious problems later. Cervical cancer can usually be prevented if women are screened regularly. The Pap test can find abnormal cells in the cervix. If the results of a Pap test show abnormal cells that could become cancerous, a woman can be treated. In most cases, this treatment prevents cervical cancer from developing. Pap tests can also find cancer early, when the chance of being cured is very high. One thing to note is that abnormal cells in the cervix and cervical cancer don’t always cause symptoms, especially at first. This makes it all the more important to get your annual Pap test. Lisa Modrusic, health educator with the Madison County Health Department says, “Women who are missing their annual Pap tests, are missing the single most important thing that they can do to detect cervical cancer.” For women aged 35 to 64, who do not have health insurance, help is available. The Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (IBCCP) provides free mammograms and pap smears. There are no income guidelines for this program. For more information about IBCCP, please call the Madison County Health Department at 692-8954 ext. 2. For more information about cervical cancer, call the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Information Service at 1-800-422-6237or visit their Web site http://cis.nci.nih.gov. and the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 or visit their Web site at www.cancer.org.

Music
It’s the musical about a musical By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge A new musical about a new musical opens in The Rep’s Studio Theatre. Unpredictable, funny, tune-filled [title of show] plays now through Jan. 31.. The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis (The Rep) continues its 2009 through 2010 Studio Theatre series with an unabashedly self-aware and totally unique creation with music and lyrics by Jeff Bowen and book by Hunter Bell. And yes, for the last time, [title of show] really is the title. Performances of [title of show] will be given in the Emerson Studio Theatre of the Loretto-Hilton Center for the Performing Arts, 130 Edgar Road (on the campus of Webster University), Webster Groves, now through Jan. 31. Curtain times are Tuesday at 7 p.m.; Wednesday through Friday at 8 p.m.; Saturday evenings at 5 p.m.; selected Saturday nights at 9 p.m.; Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. and Sunday evenings at 7 p.m. Ticket prices start at just $35. To purchase, visit The Rep Box Office, located inside the Loretto-Hilton Center, charge by phone by calling (314) 968-4925, or visit The Rep’s online Box Office at www.repstl.org. What are two hyper-talented young songwriters in New York to do? Bored with their series of odd jobs and bursting with creativity and a bit of cynicism, they endeavor to write about what they know best: two hyper-talented songwriters in New York. With two actress friends in tow, they embark on a true Cinderella journey from the unemployment line to the Great
White Way. As inspiration for their efforts, these two writers give themselves a challenge: they’ll have a submission ready for the New York Musical Theatre Festival. With a deadline only three weeks away, the team gets busy writing and singing about everything that is happening along the way. Over a dozen original songs are featured including
“Untitled Opening Number;” “Two Nobodies in New York;” “Die, Vampire, Die!” and “Nine People’s Favorite Thing.” The New York Times called [title of show] “DELECTABLE ENTERTAINMENT! A postmodern homage to the grand tradition of backstage musicals like ‘Babes in Arms;’ ‘Kiss Me, Kate’ and ‘A Chorus Line.’” Bell likes to call it an
’autobiofictionography’ because, in his words, “it really does represent our lives, our creation. And about the title, it was the first question on the Festival application, so that’s really where it all begins.” As the show was accepted at the Festival, then an Off-Broadway run at the Vineyard Theatre in 2006 and an eventual Broadway run at the Lyceum Theatre in 2008, it was updated to include the excitement, frustrations and experiences the team encountered. Gathering honors and accolades every step of the way, [title of show] was honored with a 2006 Obie Award Special Citation and a Broadway.com Audience Award for Favorite Ensemble Cast in 2009. Additionally, Hunter Bell was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical. In addition to [title of show], Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell have collaborated on many projects including “Villians Tonight!” for Disney, the web series ’the [title of show] show’ and a pilot for ABC currently in development. Additionally, Bowen has written music and lyrics for several shows at PS 122, as well as numerous galas, events and awards shows. As a performer, he originated the role of Jeff in [title of show] and has been seen at The O’Neill Center, Manhattan Theatre Source, Ars Nova and the Vineyard Theatre, among others. Bowen is also the co-founder of Late August Design, an internet design and marketing company that represented “Wicked,” “Spelling Bee,” “Urinetown” and “The Full Monty.” Hunter Bell’s additional credits include the book for “Silence! The Musical,” the book for the
137th edition of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus, “Bellobration!,” as well as many benefits and events. Performing credits include originating the role of Hunter in [title of show] and appearances both on and off Broadway, right here at The Rep, The Muny, Cleveland Play House, Vi n e y a rd T h e a t re , S t a g e s S t . Louis and Carnegie Hall among many others. In 2003, he won the Connecticut Outer Critics Award for Best Actor in a Musical. Bell is also a distinguished alumnus of Webster University’s Conservatory of Theatre Arts. The cast of [title of show] at The Rep is Stephanie D’Abruzzo as Susan; Benjamin Howes as Jeff; Amy Justman as Heidi; and Ben Nordstrom as Hunter. [title of show] is directed and choreographed by Victoria Bussert, who makes her Studio Theatre directing debut after directing many favorite shows on the Mainstage. The creative staff also includes David Horstman, music director (and Larry); Scott C. Neale, scenic designer; Betsy Krausnick, costume designer; John Wylie, lighting designer; Rusty Wandall, sound designer; and Champe Leary, stage manager. This show contains the creative use of adult language and is recommended for those 16 years of age and older. For more information about The Rep’s production of [title of show], including a guide introducing the characters, plot and background on the play, photos and video related to the production, and more, visit The Rep’s comprehensive public Web site at http://www.repstl.org.

The Carpe Diem String Quartet is a musical group that has captured the imagination of audiences around the world. Peter Soave is an internationally acclaimed bandoneon and concert accordionist. Together, they perform the music of the late Aldemaro Romero. Aldemaro Romero was an international recording star with RCA Victor and one of the foremost Latin music orchestra leaders in the world. One of the pieces in this concert will be Romero’s Five Paleontological Mysteries for accordion and string quartet. Romero had Peter Soave in mind when he wrote this piece in honor of his son, Aldemaro Romero Jr., a biologist and SIUE’s new dean for the College of Arts and Sciences, who discovered five new fossils. Dean Romero will conduct this piece as well as the finale, Fuga con Pajarillo, a suite for strings in one movement based on actual South American bird songs. Fuga con Pajarillo will include a special video presentation celebrating SIUE’s College of Arts and Sciences.

“Invictus”
Clint Eastwood’s latest is a sports film less about what’s on the playing field than what’s happening in the stands. It’s the story of South Africa’s sea change under Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) told through the unlikely prism of sport. It comes off like a case study in leadership, perhaps a bit clinical and limited, but still deeply revealing. When Mandela takes office in 1994, he embraces the rugby national team, the Springboks, and seeks to turn a symbol of apartheid into a beacon of hope. It feels like destiny fulfilled hearing Freeman — who has long sought to play the role — speak Mandela’s halting, humble speech. No one could be better. “Invictus” is dripping with inspiration, and Eastwood’s extraordinary late period remains a good place to find it. With a blond, beefed-up Matt Damon as the rugby team’s captain and one truly terrible song from a South African boy band. RATED: PG-13 for brief strong language. RUNNING TIME: 132 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
“Avatar”
James Cameron’s 3-D epic has all the smack of a Film Not To Miss — a movie whose effects are clearly revolutionary, a spectacle that millions will find adventure in. But it nevertheless feels unsatisfying and somehow lacks the pulse of a truly alive film. The plot is a little like the American frontier circa the 1800s, only transposed to the year 2154 on the faraway moon Pandora, the home of Native Americanlike, aqua blue, 10-foot tall creatures called the Na’vi. Arriving are imperialistic humans to plunder, and scientists to study. Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) leads a team that explores in Na’vi bodies, avatars, controlled remotely. A sense of discovery — of Cameron’s digital world of Pandora, of the impressive techno-filmmaking — makes “Avatar” often thrilling. The environmentalist and anti-war messages resonate with contemporary troubles, but they also seem odd coming from such a swaggering behemoth of a movie. One senses Cameron’s zest lies in the battle, not in peace. With Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana. RATED: PG-13 for intense epic battle sequences and warfare, sensuality, language and some smoking. RUNNING TIME: 161 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and half stars out of four.

“It’s Complicated”
Writer-director Nancy Meyers’ latest relationship comedy isn’t what the name promises at all. It’s simple, almost as simple about grown-up romance and heartache as the average Hollywood teen comedy is about youthful love and sex. That said, a simple-minded story can benefit enormously with Meryl Streep on screen for almost an entire movie. Streep is charming as a divorced woman in an affair with her remarried ex-husband (Alec Baldwin) and a flirtation with a new man (Steve Martin). Too bad Streep puts on this nice show for such a superficial story, and for that matter, too bad for Baldwin, Martin and the rest of an earnest supporting cast led by John Krasinski. Meyers serves up fluff as light as the pastries Streep’s character bakes for a living, a story to make divorced people wish their broken marriages and the ugly aftermath could be as fun and frolicsome as this. RATED: R for some drug content and sexuality. RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“Sherlock Holmes”
Robert Downey Jr. is so NOT Sherlock Holmes. That’s not a hindrance — in fact, it’s a big help — as he and Guy Ritchie bring Arthur Conan Doyle’s Victorian-age detective into the modern world. Enough of the trappings are left in their brawn-over-brain action romp to make Downey a reasonably faithful embodiment of Holmes. And of course, this is Downey, whose career resurgence rests on his ability to make the most unlikely role his own. The movie’s big failing is the drab story, a bit of nonsense revolving around a secret society and potentially supernatural doings. But Ritchie compensates with exhilarating action, and the movie offers engaging interplay among Downey and Jude Law as Holmes sidekick Watson, Rachel McAdams as the woman in the detective’s life, Eddie Marsan as Scotland Yard Inspector Lestrade and Mark Strong as the bad guy. RATED: PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, some startling images and a scene of suggestive material. RUNNING TIME: 129 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
“Daybreakers”
There are more revisionist vampire stories out there than you can shake a stake at nowadays, and they’re
getting tiresome. At least vampire tales such as TV’s “True Blood” or the movie thriller “Thirst” are playful and sexy, and stuff such as “Twilight” is fun to make fun of. But this one from sibling writer-directors Peter and Michael Spierig plays like a dirge, striking one long, monotonous note of gloom, a dramatic flatline that barely budges even during the movie’s uninspired action-and-gore sequences. Ethan Hawke stars as a reluctant vampire in the world of 2019, where most of humanity has become bloodsuckers and the supply of blood is running out. The race is on to find a substitute — or a cure to vampirism after a band of humans stumbles onto a way to change the undead back to friendly mortals. The story is humdrum, the dialogue insipid, the visual trappings derivative of countless better futuristic tales. With Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill and Claudia Karvan. RATED: R for strong bloody violence, language and brief nudity. RUNNING TIME: 98 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.
“Youth in Revolt”
The ratios in Miguel Arteta’s adaptation of C.D. Payne’s popular novel are out of whack. Steve Buscemi and Zach Galifianakis are barely utilized, yet we get two Michael Ceras. Cera plays Nick Twisp, a precocious 16-year-old Californian who decides his virginity is an issue that must be addressed. On a summer trip to a trailer park in the country with his mother (Jean Smart) and her boyfriend (Galifianakis), Nick falls for the beautiful Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday). To win her, he invents an alter-ego: a brash, arrogant French playboy dubbed Francois Dillinger. With smart dialogue that calls attention to itself and a manifested devil-on-the-shoulder, “Youth in Revolt” is a bit like a combination of “Juno” and “Fight Club.” Cera is clever and subtle, but doesn’t have the range for multiplicity. With little genuine rebelliousness and a lot of tired geek-wants-to-have-sex story, the overdone quirkiness of “Youth in Revolt” disappoints. With Ray Liotta, Justin Long and Fred Willard, the lone adult who gets anything fun to do. RATED: R for sexual content, language and drug use. RUNNING TIME: 90 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“The Spy Next Door” should move out By DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press Jackie Chan. Boring pen salesman named Bob Ho. But really an ace CIA agent who’s retiring from the spy game to marry the single mom next door. Only her kids can’t stand him because they think he’s a boring pen salesman named Bob Ho. So she goes away and he volunteers to baby-sit to win over the little ones. Except these Russian spies come after him and the children ... You buying any of this? Neither are we. Like many action stars, Chan is looking for a piece of the lucrative family market with “The Spy Next Door” and his upcoming “The Karate Kid.” Maybe he’ll have some luck with the latter, a remake with some built-in appeal, because “The Spy Next Door” is the sort of slop to make you long for a lessirritating neighbor, like Barney the dinosaur or some Teletubbies. Maybe Jar-Jar Binks. In fairness, Chan is no more tiresome than anyone else in “The Spy Next Door,” from Billy Ray Cyrus as his good old boy spy ally to George Lopez as his grinning CIA boss to Madeline Carroll, Will Shadley and Alina Foley as the supremely annoying children. It’s not nice to make fun of kids, so let’s blame the young ones’ obnoxiousness on director Brian Levant, who specializes in bringing out the worst in performers for family fare (“Jingle All the Way,” ‘’Are We There Yet?”). T h e s c re e n p l a y c re d i t e d t o Jonathan Bernstein, James Greer
Associated Press
In photo by Lionsgate Pictures, Jackie Chan is shown with Alina Foley in a scene from, “The Spy Next Door.” and Gregory Poirier (Really? Three guys to write this mess?) centers on some top-secret formula accidentally downloaded by one of the children Bob’s minding for his girlfriend, Gillian (Amber Valletta). That sends the villains calling, putting Bob and his young charges on the run for their lives. Chan’s halting English made for
an endearing chuckle or two in his “Rush Hour” movies, but here, it’s just a chore to decipher what he’s saying. The language barrier is compounded by the sometimes incomprehensible mutterings from Magnus Scheving and Katherine Boecher, doing miserable Borisand-Natasha imitations as the main Russian villains.
O d d s a re , g i v e n t h e d u m b dialogue that you actually can understand, we’re not missing anything when the accents obscure the lines. This sad little movie is built entirely to set up Chan’s stunt sequences as he fights with pots, pans, ladders and other found objects or hurtles stairways to chase bad guys. The action stuff is
more tolerable than the jokes, but barely. Parents, there are so many better ways to entertain your kids for an afternoon than shelling out for this. Think sock puppets and go from there. Farren sums things up nicely at the outset of “The Spy Next Door,” shouting, “I hate this family!” Yeah, know the feeling.
Two films that only offer so much By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge It’s starting to get a tad repetitive at the box office. Avatar has now been well ahead of every other challenger for over four weeks and it’s money-making legend will guarantee that we see what, six or seven sequels? Sigh. As far as technologically innovative, I can’t say a bad word against it. Avatar is the most colorful, visually stunning film I’ve ever seen. You would be foolish to waste the opportunity to see it in the 3-D format. James Cameron and his brilliant battalion of filmmakers have constructed things that were rumored as possible, but not yet seen before. They take the motion c a p t u re f i l m i n g t e c h n i q u e s t h a t P e t e r Jackson first used successfully in The Lord of the Rings (which took a step back with The Polar Express) and improved them to a level that frequently confused me as to whether or not who and/or what I was watching was actually real. That might be the biggest compliment to pay

a movie about a story set on a distant planet’s jungle moon--populated with blue-skinned natives that are eight feet tall. Unfortunately, Avatar is a touch weak on the story. It’s nothing more than a u l t r a - l i b e r a l j i b e a t t h e o v e r- p a t r i o t i c telling of a Cowboys-and-Indians story. And, as I’ve honestly told you scores of times, nothing can make up for a story that doesn’t offer something new (or at least better than it’s been told before). For this reason, Avatar merited only a tiny mention on my year-end list, making me a proud frontrunner in that critical minority. Cameron didn’t need the help in cementing his status in Hollywood and he guarantees now that he’ll never be second-guessed again--as dangerous for an artist as that might be. The performers like Sigourney Weaver, Zoe Saldana, and Sam Worthington will come out all the better for it. But the many of you that have seen it will have to judge for yourselves if this is truly Best Picture material. Av atar runs 173 minutes and is rated
PG-13 for intense epic battle sequences and w a r f a re , s e n s u a l i t y, l a n g u a g e , a n d s o m e smoking. I give this film two stars out of four. Back on Planet Earth, albeit in a beautiful area that might double for the Pandoran moon, the newest release in theatres is Leap Year. I was convinced that star Amy Adams, now pregnant with her first child, could kick off my 2010 with a romantic comedy that was both romantic (which, at times, this movie is) and funny (which, at times, it tries to be). Adams should be able to accomplish this easy task. She’s coming off a string of hits, both critical (Doubt, Sunshine Cleaning) and commercial (as Amelia Earhart in the second Night at the Museum movie). She’s plucky and cute. Surely my redheaded heroine could save the genre from recent bad luck (I’m pointing at your, Katherine Heigl). Alas, the Luck of the Irish wasn’t with this one. Adams stars as a image-conscious young lady who is tired of her doctor boyfriend (Adam Scott) not popping the question.
To press the issue, she trails him to his medical conference in Dublin where she plans to follow an ancient Irish tradition by proposing to him on Leap Day, February 29th. Legend has it that h e c a n ’ t d e c l i n e s u c h a n o ff e r u n d e r said circumstances. Her best laid plans fall to the Welsh wayside when severe turbulence sets her down hours from her destination. She’s forced to accept a ride from a desperate pub owner named Declan (equally cute, but scruffy Matthew Goode) in turn for the capital to save his inn. They trek awkwardly toward their goal and find themselves doing a sub-par remake of It Happened One Night. T h e s e r i o u s i s s u e s o f t h a t f i l m a re shared in solidarity with this one. The Black & White 1930s are replaced by the emerald landscape of the British Isles. Surely Ireland is the most beautiful place in the world, but this movie could have been much better. Leap Year runs 102 minutes and is rated PG for sensuality and language. I give this film one star out of four.

China pulls 2D version of "Avatar" from theaters BEIJING (AP) — China plans to put the breaks on “Avatar ’s” record-breaking run. Authorities are pulling the non3D version of the science fiction e p i c f ro m s c re e n s a c ro s s t h e country as of Saturday, according to theater operators and state media, apparently for political and economic reasons. China Film Group, the staterun domestic distributor of the H o l l y w o o d b l o c k b u s t e r, h a s reportedly ordered cinemas to stop showing the 2D version of James Cameron’s global hit

Reportedly, part of the reason is to reduce competition for China’s homegrown films, like the statebacked biopic of Confucius, the a n c i e n t C h i n e s e p h i l o s o p h e r, starring Hong Kong superstar Chow Yun-fat, which opens this Thursday. Reacquaint yourself with reading By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge I love a good book. I love a mediocre book actually. Reading is one of my favorite pastimes. Although many don’t like to give Oprah Winfrey credit for much, she did seem to have a large influence on the revival of reading. Believe it or not, it has been 14 years since the arrival of her book club, and what followed, a resurgence of people reading and forming their own book clubs. With more than 70 selections, nearly every book chosen by the daytime talk show host has made it to the top of the best seller list. Obviously someone’s taking her advice. I tried to keep up with her selections at first. I didn’t formally participate, but I am always asking people what their favorite book is or what good book they read lately so I can have ideas to pick up the next time I visit the library or maybe have a couple dollars to spend on a book. So I referred to her list a number of times, but I soon found a pattern in what I was reading. Everything was depressing! Maybe it got better after the first couple of years, but nearly all the selections I read left me feeling like I needed a stiff drink or to quickly read a different book to get the residue of the Oprah selection out of my brain. Reading is important for all ages. It is learning, no matter what the genre of the literature. It stretches the imagination, keeps the brain vibrant and allows people to escape into different worlds without actually physically leaving this one. That being said, I think book clubs or groups that encourage reading, whether it be for children or adults, are a good thing. Whether you are the “old fashioned” reader, as I am, and still like the books with covers and pages or if you have switched over to an “e-reader,” hopefully you can understand the love I have for the written word. If not, consider some of the following events around the area that have been designed to get people interested or to continue reading. The Edwardsville Public Library is offering a winter reading program “Warm Up with a Good Book,” for adult readers. The program begins on Monday, Feb. 1 and continues for six weeks, ending on Sunday, March 14. Not only will participants

The Arts SIUE dean's dream to become a reality Arts and Issues to host Carpe Diem String Quartet By JULIA BIGGS jbiggs.edwi@gmail.com The SIUE Arts & Issues 25th Anniversary season continues in 2010 by kicking off the year with a very special collaborative program that was conceived by SIUE’s Aldemaro Romero Jr., the new dean for the College of Arts and Sciences. The Carpe Diem String Quartet, a group that performs a classical string quartet repertoire, but is known as a “classical group that rocks,” has been nominated in four categories for the 2009 Grammy Awards. They will join the internationally acclaimed bandoneon and concert accordionist Peter Soave in concert. Together they will be performing the music of the late Aldemaro Romero, the father of Romero Jr. Romero was an international recording star with RCA Victor and one of the foremost Latin music orchestra leaders in the world. In America, Romero’s reputation as an arrangerconductor led him to collaborate with popular orchestras and singers such as Dean Martin, big band bandleader Stan Kenton and popular Latin percussionist Tito Puente. He passed away in 2007. Romero was credited with creating a new form of Venezuelan music, known as Onda Nueva (New Wave) that was influenced by Brazilian Bossa Nova rhythms. Romero Jr. joined the SIUE family in 2009. A biologist by profession, he grew up living in various countries across Europe and even spent a few years in New York City and Chicago as Romero’s work as a famous Latin symphony orchestra conductor and composer took he and his family around the world. Romero Jr. said that being the son of someone famous while growing up “was interesting.” He further explained that his father had a show on television in Spain, similar to that of an Ed Sullivan-type show in the U.S. which resulted in immediate recognition of his father “wherever he went on the streets.” In addition, with Romero Jr. having the same name, people immediately made the connection and identified him also. Romero’s extraordinary musical talents set expectations that Romero Jr. would someday follow in his father ’s footsteps. “I started conducting when I was 4 years old,” Romero Jr. said. “I was considered one of those prodigy kids able to read music before reading actual words.” Nevertheless at the age of 7, Romero Jr. said his path veered from music, ironically while taking private music lessons from a tutor. “The reason was largely that one of those tutors was a really bad teacher who tried to impose extremely harsh discipline on a 7 year old kid,” Romero Jr. said. “And at that time, the Sputnik was launched. When I read about that in the newspaper I said, 'That’s really cool. That’s what I really want to be involved in – science.' And since then I became really involved in science.” Although Romero Jr. enjoys music and still plays, he has excelled in the field of biological sciences. A biographical sketch of Romero Jr. on the SIUE Web site states that “Throughout his career Dr. Romero has published more than 560 pieces including numerous books, peerreviewed publications and monographs on a wide variety of subjects including cave biology,

Performing the music of the late Aldemaro Romero, well known Latin band leader from the mid-20th Century, this Grammynominated group featuring Peter Soave will be sure to provide an exciting evening of music. marine mammals, paleontology, environmental studies, and history and philosophy of science. He has produced, written and, in many cases directed and hosted, about 1500 radio and 50 TV shows, including some award-winning nature documentaries.” Romero Jr. returns to his musical roots with the Arts & Issues Jan. 30 show featuring the Carpe Diem Quartet and Peter Soave. The brainchild of Romero Jr. and a show he tried unsuccessfully to put together during his tenure at Arkansas State University, he said the show never materialized earlier because he couldn’t find people with the technique and the skill level necessary to perform the pieces. All that changed when Romero Jr. contacted Peter Soave and explained his vision of the show. Recognized worldwide as the foremost master of the bandoneon and concert accordion and someone who Romero had played with in the past, Soave volunteered to play in the show and the rest of it came together. “I explained to him what I wanted to do, and he was really excited about it,” Romero Jr. said. “And he recommended the Carpe Diem group as the one to have the technical skills to play the strings for it.” Explaining what the audience could expect, Romero Jr. said, “They can expect something that has the flavor and the sounds and a melody of Latin music but the arrangement, so to speak, is for chamber orchestra. Some people will feel that they are listening to a little bit of a tango type of thing especially because the pieces that Peter Soave (are) going to interpret in most cases are going to be more of a Caribbean type of music. In other cases it’s going to be very experimental – combining different types of rhythms with harmonies and melodies so it’s going to be really interesting to the musical viewpoint, but I will say it’s the kind of music that you rarely hear on radio – let me put it that way.” One of the pieces that the Carpe Diem Quartet and Peter Soave show will feature is “Five Paleontological Mysteries.” This particular piece will be especially moving as
Romero Jr. will be conducting his father’s piece that was written in honor of Romero Jr. and a scientific paper he published in which he discovered five new fossils in Spain. “Basically I discovered these fossils – they were jellyfishes, lizards and other creatures – and just out of curiosity I sent my father a copy of the paper just for him to see,” Romero Jr. said. “And to my surprise a couple of months later, I learned that he had written a five movement piece based on that paper. It’s the only case I know in which an obscure scientific paper inspired a piece of musical composition, particularly chamber music.” This piece will be especially powerful as Romero wrote it with Soave in mind. I n a d d i t i o n , R o m e ro J r. , w i t h t h e assistance of a graduate student from the mass communications department at SIUE, has put together a video presentation that will accompany the “Five Paleontological Mysteries” piece. The video will be a compilation of photographic records of the fossils discovered as well as different scenes of the area where they were excavated. An accompanying display of the fossils will be available in the lobby. “The idea is that the video will be played and then I’ll be conducting the music and make sure that there is perfect synchrony between the music and the way the video has been edited,” Romero Jr. said. “It’s going to be quite an interesting experiment. “I have to be careful because if something goes wrong, there’s no way to remedy that on the spot.” Romero Jr. will also be conducting the finale, “Fuga con Pajarillo,” a suite for strings in one movement based on actual South American bird songs. “Fuga con Pajarillo” will include a special video presentation celebrating SIUE’s College of Arts and Sciences. Romero Jr. said he produced the “documentary so to speak” and that it highlights “the entire marvelous things that are happening in the College of Arts and Sciences using my father’s music and great photography” provided by the Department of Mass Communications.
This combining of video or film to chamber music is a relatively new concept and one that Romero Jr. said we’ll see more of in the future at SIUE in a future performing arts center. His goal is to build a new center with the technological capabilities to combine the performance of music with audio visuals. For example, he hopes to one day have the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra playing in Japan but being projected on a screen in the SIUE performing arts center with the SIUE dancers performing live in front of it. Vice versa, a live image of the SIUE dancers would be projected on a screen in Tokyo as the orchestra is performing in Japan. While the dream of a new performing arts center remains on the drawing board, the realization of Romero’s dream is likely coming true Jan. 30 at the Arts & Issues show. “I think he will probably be very pleased with the fact that I will be conducting the orchestra and the reason for that is his dream of me being a musician is being fulfilled in certain ways,” Romero Jr. said. “He gave me the baton of his orchestra when I was 4 years old so it’s clear to me that he expected me to follow along in his footsteps. Although I didn’t do that, the fact that after so many years I went behind the stage and came out with all these ideas and putting this altogether, he will probably be pleased.” Several of the Romero family members are actually flying into Edwardsville from Spain for the concert. “They are really intrigued, and they feel its kind of me completing the circle after 55 years or so of fulfilling my father’s dreams.” Tickets for “The Carpe Diem Quartet and Peter Soave” performance and the remaining Arts & Issues anniversary season may be purchased online at www.siue.edu/ artsandissues/. Seating for this show is limited. General admission is $27, SIUE staff, retirees, alumni or seniors 65 and older are $25 and student tickets are $13. Subscription prices are available when purchasing the remaining five season performances in advance. ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Alaskans have been betting on when the ice on the Tanana River in the town of Nenana will break each spring since 1917, placing their wagers in red cans in grocery stores, gas stations and other retailers around the state. The bets, at $2.50 apiece, can be placed between Feb. 1 and April 5. The 2009 total reached $283,723. But non-residents can take part in the contest too, by mailing in their bets with a check or money order. For details and contact information,
visit the Web site at http://www. nenanaakiceclassic.com. The Web site also includes detailed data from winning dates in past years for out-of-towners who care to study up. Your guess must include the hour and minute (Alaska time) of the ice break. Most years, the ice has broken in late April or early to mid-May. A trip-wired tripod planted 2 feet into the ice officially records the time of the ice break. When the ice cracks, a wire connecting the tripod to a clock is triggered, stopping the clock. Or if you prefer to place your bet in person and see some of that ice before it disappears with the coming of spring, visit Nenana March 6-8 for its Tripod Days festival. The event features a basketball tournament, Texas Hold ’Em poker championships, a biscuit-and-gravy breakfast, donut eating contest and hula hoop contest.

Dining Delights
Blood oranges Don’t be fooled by the name By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge The grey days and lack of sun can make our bodies crave vitamins. A great way to give your body a great jump start is by eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. One fruit that is great for a body boost and is now in season is the blood orange. The name may not be too appetizing, but the flavor is. The crimson-red citrus center gives the name, but is due to the presence of anthocyanin, a pigment common to many flowers – not usually to fruit. The low-acid orange has a citrusyberry flavor, making it very tasty for those more sensitive to higher acidic foods. These oranges are now available in your local Schnucks, delivered in by Frieda’s Specialty Produce out of California. This fruit originate in the ash-rich soil of the plains surrounding Mount Etna in Sicily. This unique fruit is now harvested in citrus groves around the United States. The thick orangey-red rind is delicious candied, grated into sauces, or added to marmalades and orange curds. Use the rich, ruby-red juice to perk up fresh-squeezed juices and cocktails like Mimosas! Believe it or not, there is more to do with an orange than to peel it or make juice from it. There are a number of tasty recipes that are sure to tempt the appetite of family members of all ages. Here are a sampling of a few recipes:

Dining Delights Mexican stew great for parties, everyday meals By Tara Duggan San Francisco Chronicle Pozole, the hearty Mexican hominy stew, can either be a celebratory dish or a humble everyday food. A meaty broth studded with hominy and vegetables, with an earthy flavor from chiles, it’s one of the most satisfying foods I know. And when the urge for it comes, I find it hard to ignore. Tr a d i t i o n a l re c i p e s c a n b e demanding of your time and your willingness to put a pig’s head in a pot. But there are so many versions of pozole, and different reasons to make it, that your options don’t have to be limited. The three main types are white, which has a clear broth; green, which gets its color and flavor from hulled pumpkin seeds, tomatillos and green chiles; and red, which has a thick, brick-red broth laced with dried fruity-spicy chiles. Most traditional pozoles are made from pork, but plenty of recipes use chicken. Desperately hungry for red pozole on a recent afternoon, I came up with a streamlined and budgetminded version that’s easy enough for a weekend family dinner and special enough for New Year’s Day with friends. Simmer chicken drumsticks with canned hominy and some stock. Meanwhile, toast dried guajillo chiles, onion and garlic on a griddle, soak the chiles in hot water until soft, then puree them with the vegetables and some of their soaking liquid. The chile puree goes into the broth, which continues simmering while you remove the cooked chicken from the bone. All that’s left to do is to return the chicken meat to the broth and season it to taste with salt. The payoff is when you sit down and customize your bowls with shredded cabbage, chopped onion, a pinch of dried oregano and lime. The recipe for Sumac Chicken Wraps is a quicker option for weeknights. Sumac isn’t yet sold in most supermarkets but it’s a spice that you can now find in many specialty grocers, and not just Middle Eastern ones. Made from the ground fruit of the sumac shrub, its lemony flavor makes it popular in salads and other dishes, while its deep purple color also makes it a great accent for a bowl of hummus or baba ganoush. I love using it in a rub for chicken with olive oil, salt and garlic. It may require tracking down a bit, but then you’re set for instant marinades for months. You can eat the grilled chicken with rice or place it in a lavash wrap with yogurt tahini sauce and fresh vegetables. Whether you wrap your chicken in lavash or put it in a pot of pozole, I hope you enjoy cooking in the new year. Red Pozole Sunday Supper: Dinner in 1 hour

Serves 6 You can find dried chiles, hominy and Mexican oregano at most supermarkets or Latin American markets. To keep things moving, start simmering the chicken before you make the chile sauce. This recipe is easily doubled. Chile puree 2 large dried Mexican chiles, preferably anchos or guajillos, stems and seeds removed 1 clove garlic, peeled 1/2 white onion, halved through the core and peeled 1 cup boiling water Pozole 11/2 pounds bone-in chicken drumsticks (about 6) 1 (29-ounce) can hominy, drained 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth or pork stock 2 cups water 1 to 2 teaspoons kosher salt, or to taste (see Note) To serve 11/2 cups thinly sliced green cabbage 1/2 white onion, finely diced 3 to 4 radishes, thinly sliced Lime wedges Dried oregano, preferably Mexican, to sprinkle on top Warm tortillas or tostadas to serve To make the chile puree: Preheat a griddle or cast-iron pan over low heat, then add the dried chiles, garlic clove and onion. Toast until softened and browned, taking care that the dried chiles don’t burn, 12 minutes, flipping everything once. Place the dried chiles in a small bowl and cover with the boiling water. Let sit until tender, about 15 minutes. Place the rehydrated chiles and the other vegetables in a blender with 1/2 cup of the chile-soaking liquid and blend until completely smooth. To make the pozole: Add the chicken, hominy, broth and water to a medium stockpot. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer, cover and cook until the chicken is tender and cooked through, 20 minutes. Using tongs, remove the chicken from the pot and place on a plate to cool. Add the chile puree to the pot; you can reduce the amount if it seems too spicy, but keep in mind the chiles add flavor and the hominy will absorb some of the heat. Return to a simmer, cover and cook for 10 to 20 minutes. Discard the chicken skin and bones and chop the meat into large chunks. Add it back to the pot to reheat briefly and season the broth to taste with salt. To serve: Place the cabbage, onion, radishes, limes and oregano in bowls. Serve the pozole, passing the bowls of garnishes and tortillas or tostadas at the table. Note: I used unsalted homemade stock and added about 2 teaspoons kosher salt, so you
should adjust it depending on the saltiness of your broth.

Dining Delights OK, we admit these are our opinions and you certainly should form your own, but it is nice to have a guide of places to eat when you are undecided or want to try something new or different. To send us a suggestion of a restaurant to try, e-mail theedge@ edwpub.net 54th Street Bar and Grill Edwardsville 4 stars Great menu selection, something for everyone. Prices are very reasonable and have not had a bad selection yet. Remember to get your frequent diner card stamped when ordering an entree so you can get one free when your card is full. Red Robin Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars The bottomless french fries are fantastic, but it basically is a pricey burger place. Service is not super speedy, but food was good and hot. Good group setting. Cold Stone Creamery Edwardsville 5 stars I really would give this more stars if we had them, but all we can give is five. I LOVE their ice cream concoctions, particularly the Cheesecake Fantasy or the Apple Pie A La Cold Stone. I really could put more selections here, but use your imagination! Red Apple Maryville 4 stars The Red Apple is another favorite of our family, whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner. There is a huge menu selection, including Italian, broasted chicken, gyros, sandwiches of all kinds, plate specials, fish selections – fried and broiled, and much more. Service is always impeccable and prices can’t be beat. La Fonda Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars Good food, good service. All you can eat chips and salsa are great complement to their abundant menu. Their rice and beans are excellent also. Bigelo’s Bistro Edwardsville 4 stars Great menu selection of gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads, pastas and more. Great downtown Edwardsville location where you are sure to see someone you know. Carisillo’s Mexican Restaurant Collinsville 3 1/2 stars A great selection, similar to

LaFonda. Good prices and endless chips and salsa. Service is quick and friendly. Not the fanciest, especially on the outside, but don’t judge a Mexican restaurant by its cover! St. Louis Bread Company Edwardsville/Collinsville 4 1/2 Stars OK men, don’t scoff at the rating, but embrace it! Although men look at it as “chick food,” there is something for every taste on their menu. Fantastic soups, sandwiches, bakery items, coffees, teas, salads, and more. Great place to take a laptop or a book and just kick back and sip a cup of java. Bully’s Smokehouse Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars The food is good at Bully’s, but a little foo-foo for a barbecue place. The prices are a little more than typical barbecue fare. Good for business lunch or dinner and nice servings. Pantera’s Pizza Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars Still some of the best pizza around, but the decor needs a bit of updating, along with the dinner ware. The buffet is good if they keep it full, but that can be an issue at times. You better put on your running shoes to get that hot selection before everyone else beats you to it! El Maguey Mexican Restaurant Edwardsville 3 Stars Good chips and salsa start you off with a nice selection of dishes. Authentic Mexican dishes are delivered promptly to your table. Jimmy John’s Sandwich Shop Edwardsville 4 stars Where sandwiches are concerned, you can hardly beat a good Jimmy John’s. Their Bootlegger Club and The Big John are some of the favorites around here. Their cookies are great also, ask them to heat it up. They really are “freaky fast!” Big Daddy’s
Edwardsville 3 stars Typical bar fare of appetizers, sandwiches, salads, and wraps round out Big Daddy’s menu. They offer specials on certain days that are a real value. Service can be a bit slow when they are busy. Fiona’s Family Restaurant Edwardsville 4 stars S p e c i a l s e a c h d a y, l o t s o f selections, great breakfast. Service is fast and food is hot. Very friendly environment where you won’t spend a lot to get a great meal. Bella Milano Edwardsville 4 stars Quickly becoming a legend in Edwardsville, Bella Milano is a favorite for many. Great dining a t m o s p h e re a n d l o t s o f g o o d Italian food and drink. Come hungry with loose fitting clothing. Bull and Bear Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars A sports bar and grill with that offers bar side and dining room seating. A selection of appetizers, sandwiches, steaks, baby back ribs, chicken, seafood, pizza, and a kid’s menu make it family friendly, yet a great hangout for friends. Buffalo Wild Wings Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars If you like wings, this is a great place for you. Other selections of appetizers, sandwiches and mostly bar fare round out the menu. A little pricey for wings, but if you gotta havem’ you gotta havem’. Service is kind of a toss up. Has been good, has been slow. 47 Port Street Grill Ameristar Casino-St. Charles 5 stars This is a fantastic, fabulous steak house that is a great date night or special group night out. The steaks are perfect, the lobster delectable, the sea bass melts in your mouth, and the fresh pastries are world class. The ambiance

is straight out of the “Rat Pack” scene. Amazing wine selections, but any drink available. Prices are a bit steep, but a memorable feast for that special occasion. Falcon Diner Ameristar Casino-St. Charles 4 stars This top notch diner serves more than typical diner fare and you will not leave hungry. With their “Happy Days” decor and a breakfast, lunch and dinner menue that includes a one pound chicken fried steak and burgers
made to order, you will have to ask for a doggy bag. Their bakery counter is so popular, they had to give it a place of its own outside the diner so passers by can enjoy the magic also. Bartolino’s Osteria St. Louis 5 stars Italian cuisine at its best. Elegant dining with a decor reminiscent of the glamours ‘40s. Most of the traditional Italian dishes but additional gourmet Italian fare that is fantastic to the pallet.
