Tony’s buddy Calvin Local man ALWAYS asks the first question By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge

T

o the Cardinal fan sitting at home the name Calvin May might not ring a bell.

His face might not register anything either, but hear the voice and it’s very recognizable. The 49-year-old May, a lifelong Edwardsville resident, is adorned with the job of asking the first question in every Tony La Russa postgame press conference. “Who would ever think that a kid from Edwardsville would ever have the opportunity of a lifetime with a major league baseball manager,” May said with a smile. May is an alumnus of Trinity Lutheran School and a 1980 graduate of Edwardsville High School. Later he attended the Broadcast Center in St. Louis and landed a part time gig with KKID 92.9 FM out of Rolla, Mo. He also does some work assisting writer R.B. Fallstrom of the Associated Press. Those positions got him a working press pass to cover Blues, Rams and Cardinals games, but it was La Russa that put him on the map. “One night I was painting at my apartment in Edwardsville and La Russa came out of his office looking for me and a bunch of the guys in the press told him I was over on the east side painting,” said May. “The next night I covered the baseball game and the guys in the media told me La Russa was looking for me last night and I said, ‘What did I do now?’ That night he came flying out of the locker room, shook my hand and said, ‘Where were you at last night?’ I told him I was painting and couldn’t get away from it and he said, ‘You’re my leadoff man. From now on you get the first question after every baseball game.’ That was right around the middle of April 2004. “I’ve been covering Cardinal games for almost 20 years. I just kept rolling with it and throwing in the softball questions and he liked them and that’s what it took.” Often a controversial character in the St. Louis sports scene, La Russa has been criticized in the past for his bully tactics and unfriendliness with the media. May explained that’s never been the case with him. La Russa has always been nothing but nice to him, even protective of his press

Calvin May conference leadoff man. “One night one of the Channel 4 news guys asked me to move over and Tony walked away from the microphone and said, ‘You don’t move Calvin, he’s the man,’” said May. Players aren’t immune to La Russa’s protectiveness of May either. “Another night Reggie Sanders, who used to play outfield for the Cardinals, took the microphone away from Jim Hayes (Fox Sports Midwest) and was going to ask Tony the first question,” May said. “He started asking him and Tony said, ‘Is your name Calvin?’ and Reggie said, ‘No.’ So Tony said, ‘Well, Calvin generally gets to ask the first question after every game.’” With their relationship, it’s no surprise May doesn’t like to hear any La Russa bashing from his brethren in the media. “I don’t want to listen to it,” said May. “I mean everybody’s got their opinion. You hear the good and you hear the bad. I’ve heard both and I don’t want to hear that stuff. He’s a good guy no matter what anybody says and he does a very quality job

in St. Louis with his baseball team and they’ll never find anybody to do any better and I think that’s why he sticks around. He likes St. Louis, he likes the organization and he likes the people that attend the ball games.” The arrangement with the Cardinals has opened other doors for May in the media too. “Andy Murray, when he was coaching the Blues, started doing it too,” May said. “He’d come in there and say, ‘All right first question guy, go ahead.’ Even when he coached them into the playoffs there was one game in St. Louis and he did it.” Being La Russa’s first question guy has allowed May the chance to be a recognizable figure at Busch Stadium and meet some influential people also. “A lot of the guys know my name now, where a lot of guys they couldn’t tell you who they are,” he said. “I had Chris Pronger come through the area where La Russa was doing his press conference one time at the old stadium and he said, ‘Who’s the guy that gets the first

question?’ I raised my hand and a couple other guys pointed at me and Pronger sticks his thumb up and says, ‘Good job.’ “Even Joe Buck, when he’s at the ballpark he’ll get off the elevator and ask me, ‘What was the first question tonight?’ When you get recognized by a premiere announcer like that it’s pretty cool. “I’ve got to meet Geddy Lee, the lead singer for Rush, outside of (La Russa’s) office,” May said. “I got to meet Billy Bob Thornton and there have been numerous other people that have come to his office that I’ve got to meet. The people you get to meet and things you get to do are amazing.” He covers the Blues and Rams when they’re in town too, but his situation with the Cardinals has made him a fixture at Busch Stadium. He never misses a game. “Now Tony said I can’t miss a game, that I have to be there,” May said. “If the Blues are playing at the same time as the Cardinals, I cover the Cardinals first, or if the Rams are playing at the same time as the Cardinals, the Cardinals are the automatic. The people I work for want me there with the La Russa situation. It would take something out of the woodwork for me not to be there.” May credits his positive line of questioning to his current status with La Russa and he doesn’t plan to change his role anytime soon. “Every game I keep a positive attitude with it,” said May. “I never stick it to him because there are other guys that will. I keep it positive and a lot of times that will mellow him out a little bit to where if they want to really get down on him at least he’ll answer it.” May and La Russa’s relationship even keeps them in correspondence in the offseason. May said La Russa even mailed him a letter of reference from his home in California if he’d ever need it. “I e-mail him quite frequently during the offseason and he e-mails me back,” May said. “I’ll see him this weekend at the Winter Warmup and I’ll go to his ARF benefit and the baseball writer’s dinner. This year they’re toasting him so that will be neat. You never know what he’ll do if he’ll bring me on stage or say something because he mentions my name quite frequently. “Everytime I see him he always comes up and gives me a handshake or a big hug and he’ll come up and say, ‘Hey, there’s my leadoff man.’”

3,000 bright blue butterflies fill Butterfly House for March Morpho Mania The Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House will have the “blues” during the month of March, and they couldn’t be more excited! Witness up to 3,000 bright blue morpho butterflies in free flight – ten times the normal number – when March Morpho Mania® returns, March 1 through 31 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily (closed Mondays). The event is included with Butterfly House admission.

Common Blue Morpho butterflies (Morpho peleides) are a visitor favorite, easily identified by their iridescent blue wings and large eight-inch wingspan. The species is only native to Central and South America, so you can’t ordinarily catch a glimpse of blue morphos in the United States. The 8,000-square-foot tropical conservatory at the Butterfly House is normally home to roughly 300 of the creatures, but during the month of March, the indoor conservatory will be totally immersed in blue. “We are delighted to publicly showcase this impressive collection of butterflies for the fourth year,” said Joe Norton, director of the Butterfly House. “We don’t know of anywhere else in the world where you will find this expansive number of blue morphos at one time. The Butterfly House is a magical place in March.” Step inside the lushly-planted conservatory to be surrounded by thousands of these cruising creatures. Their brilliant blue color is actually the effect of refracted light on the scales of their wings, and is a useful defense mechanism for fooling predators. At roost, the mottled brown underside of the butterflies’ closed wings helps them to blend in with their surroundings, again fooling predators who mistake their spots for animal eyes. In the wild, males zoom about during the day to establish territory, attract females and shoo away other males. When hungry, the butterflies stop to feast on delicious rotting fruit, tree sap, dung and dead animal carcasses; at the Butterfly House, their vegetarian diet mainly consists of bananas and other fruits

presented on hanging feeding plates.Common Blue Morpho The Butterfly House obtains its Common Blue Morpho butterflies from El Bosque Nuevo butterfly farming operation in Costa Rica. The butterfly farm gives locals an alternative income over more damaging forms of agriculture and allows for therestoration of native habitat, increasing the potential for species of native animals and plants to survive in the wild. Family activities designed for children ages 2 to 12 will be offeredeach weekend from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Lopata Learning Lab: * March 5, 6, 12 and 13: Learn more about butterfly farming. Make a small craft caterpillar and examine how cloth sleeving on the host tree will protect it from predators. Sort, pack and “ship” pretend chrysalides and learn how entomologists unpack and hang them to await emergence. * M a rc h 1 9 , 2 0 , 2 6 a n d 2 7 : Explore the world of Central American chocolate and coffee farming. Pretend to harvest pods and beans from imitation cacao and coffee trees, and sort the beans according to weight and color. Test acidity and alkalinity of coffee, paint with chocolate and become a young entrepreneur at the Little Beans Café. During your visit, stop by the Madame Butterfly Gift Shop t o b ro w s e f o r b l u e m o r p h o and butterfly-inspired gifts, educational toys, books and souvenirs for all ages. The Butterfly House is located at 15193 Olive Blvd. at Faust Park in Chesterfield, Mo., accessible from Interstate 64 at exit #19B. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays (closed Mondays). The last ticket is sold 30 min. prior to closing each day.

People People planner Quad Cities to host Titanic exhibit On April 15, 1912, Titanic, the world’s largest ship, sank in the Atlantic after colliding with an iceberg claiming more than 1,500 lives and subsequently altering the world’s confidence in modern technology. Nearly 99 years later, the Putnam Museum & IMAX Theatre in Davenport, Iowa, will pay tribute to the tragedy which continues to resonate through Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, where more than 125 legendary artifacts conserved from the Ship’s debris field are showcased offering visitors a poignant look at this iconic Ship and its passengers. Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, on display March 13-June 26, 2011, has been designed with a focus on the legendary Titanic’s compelling human stories as best told through authentic artifacts and extensive room re-creations. Perfume from a maker who was traveling to New York to sell his samples, china etched with the logo of the elite White Star Line, even pieces of the Ship itself -- these and many other authentic objects offer haunting, emotional connections to lives abruptly ended or forever altered. “We are honored to be able to bring this acclaimed world-class Exhibition to the Quad Cities community,” said Kim Findlay, president and CEO of the Putnam Museum and IMAX Theatre. “It is truly an iconic piece of history, and to have Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at the Putnam Museum on its 99th anniversary is a privilege.” Exhibit visitors are quickly drawn back in time to 1912 upon entrance, as each receives a replica boarding pass of an actual passenger aboard Titanic. They then begin their chronological journey through the life of Titanic, moving through the Ship’s construction, to life on board, to the ill-fated sinking and amazing artifact rescue efforts. They will marvel at the re-created cabins, and press their palms against an iceberg while learning of countless stories of heroism and humanity. In the “Memorial Gallery” guests will take their boarding pass to the memorial wall and discover whether their passenger and traveling companions survived or perished. Over the past 15 years, more than 20 million people have seen this powerful 6,000-square foot exhibition in major museums worldwide - from Chicago to Los Angeles and Paris to London. RMS Titanic, Inc. is the only company permitted by law to recover objects from the wreck of Titanic. The Company was granted Salvor-inPossession rights to the wreck site of Titanic by a United States federal court in 1994 and has conducted s e v e n re s e a rc h a n d re c o v e r y expeditions to the Titanic rescuing

more than 5,500 artifacts. As depicted in the 1997 Academy Award-winning movie “Titanic,” more than 1,500 passengers and crew members perished during the ship’s maiden voyage, just four days after it launched. The ship sank in the early hours of April 15, 1912, less than three hours after colliding with an iceberg in the North Atlantic. Only about 700 people survived. The Titanic had just 20 lifeboats — and most of them left the sinking ship with far fewer passengers than their capacity would have allowed. When the Titanic sank, it was not seen again for more than 70 years, until oceanographers Robert Ballard and Jean Louis Michel discovered the shipwreck site in a joint U.S./ French expedition Sept. 1, 1985. Along with the exhibit, the Putnam Museum & IMAX Theatre will bring back the movie, “Ghosts of the Abyss,” a documentary that takes viewers under the sea to witness the wreckage recovery project. Ti c k e t s w i l l g o o n s a l e i n January. Prices will be announced at that time. For more information about this exhibition, log on: www. putnam.org/titanic. P e t e r Jazz “Master” pianist to appear at The Sheldon By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge

I

have to say that when I first got notice that Peter Martin, Jazz “Master” Pianist was coming to The Sheldon, I was expecting a 70-year-old, well-worn, experienced musician

When I saw the actual Peter Martin, Jazz “Master” Pianist, I was pleasantly surprised to see a late-30 something wearing a nice shirt and jeans, posed at the piano. So great to see that more and more younger people are becoming well know “Masters” for a music genre that has the stigma that you have to be old and play the trumpet before you can be considered an accomplished Jazz musician. Peter Martin is a prime candidate for why that isn’t necessarily the truth anymore. The Sheldon is proudly presenting Peter Martin Music: Peter Martin, solo piano, on Thursday, Feb. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. Through the recurring Peter Martin Music: Live series, Martin showcases jazz masters past and present in an intimate and casual setting. Special Music for Lifelong Achievement Instrument Drive! MFLA and Horns to Havana have teamed up to collect and send musical instruments, both donated and purchased, to students in schools in and around Havana, Cuba. Donate a used musical instrument at any concert during February and March, or bring

January 27, 2011

your donations to The Sheldon during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. By popular demand, Peter Martin performs a solo concert that includes music from his latest solo album, “Set of Five,” along with New Orleans favorites, romantic jazz standards from the “Great American Songbook” and several Brazilian tunes, influenced by his last Sheldon concert with Romero Lubambo. When asked about performing a solo show on his series Martin says, “The awesome piano and great acoustics of The Sheldon are a big point of interest for a solo piano show. People said to me, ‘We love the guests you’ve brought in, but we’d be happy just to hear you!’” Raised in St. Louis, and with strong roots in the New Orleans jazz scene, Peter Martin, RFT winner for Best Jazz Artist in 2010, is an accomplished pianist, producer, arranger and composer, and has traveled the world playing with today’s finest jazz musicians. On Jan. 19, Martin will perform with vocalist Dianne Reeves at the White House for a State Dinner with President Obama and Chinese President Hu Juntao. The program includes musicians such as Herbie Hancock, Chris Botti and Antonio Hart. Tickets for Peter Martin, solo piano, are onsale now and are $50 for VIP orchestra (includes parking)/$25 remaining orchestra/$20 balcony/$15 students. To order, call MetroTix at 314-534-1111 or visit www.TheSheldon.org. For more information, contact The Sheldon during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Music Tuning in Greenville College Choir performances set The Greenville College Choir will perform a number of concerts in South Central Illinois, St. Louis, Missouri and the Southeastern United States this spring. Weekend performances will take place in various churches in the St. Louis Metro and Metro East areas including a March 6 pre-tour concert at Christ Church Cathedral (St. Louis) and a guest appearance in the Bach at the Sem Concert Series at Concordia Seminary (St. Louis) with The American Kantorei, a professional choral and orchestral ensemble. The Greenville Choir ’s 2011 spring tour will take them to venues in Atlanta (GA), St. Petersburg (FL), Charlotte (NC) and Nashville (TN). This year ’s tour program includes works from Estonia, Norway, England and America and spans a 400-year period. Founded in 1927 by Dr. Robert W. Woods, the Greenville College Choir has attained a widespread reputation for performing sacred choral music of the highest quality. The Choir regularly joins with the Greenville Choral Union for concerts of larger choral-orchestral works such as Bach’s Magnificat, Mozart’s Requiem, and the annual Christmas performance of Handel’s Messiah. In 2008 the Choir was i n v i t e d t o s i n g a t t h e American Choral Director Association’s Central Division Convention in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In November 2009 the Choir performed with the Boston Camerata at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis. The Choir consists of 52 undergraduate students from various fields of liberal arts study, including the College’s five music degree programs. As the flagship choral ensemble of Greenville College, the choir presents as many as twenty off-campus performances each year as part of its annual tour. Students’ dedication to the program is consistently made evident by the professional quality of their performances. Conductor Jeffrey S. Wilson received his Bachelor of Music degree in piano from Augustana College (Rock Island, Illinois). He earned the Master of Music degree in choral music and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting and literature from the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. Dr. Wilson has served as conductor of the choir since 1996. Use your God-given talents Just how would you describe a ‘humble’ individual? I’ve been giving this some thought and I find myself a little conI even got out my crossword puzzle dictionary to see what other words might be used instead of ‘humble’. It suggested “low, meek, mild, abash, lowly, plain, modest, simple, plebeian, reverent and unassuming” among quite a few more words. That’s a lot of words. I find myself adding other descriptive phrases like, ‘not arrogant and very unassuming.’ I found myself thinking of people I have met or even those who we know by way of television or other media. There are those who I feel have a real ego problem. And that makes me judgmental, doesn’t it? But the truth is that there are people both in public life and also those we live and work with that we judge as being arrogant,

Doris Gvillo overbearing, or maybe, easy to get along with and in some cases, humble. Now what I’ve been wondering is if being ‘humble’ means being a pushover and making oneself available to do whatever is asked whether we want to or not. Or, perhaps, being humble means we like to push jobs off on other people with the reasoning that they are so much better qualified to do the job that we don’t want to tackle it. We do judge others as to the state of their ‘humility’ and in our own lives, we sometimes use ‘humility’ as an excuse to not act when we often could or should. I recently read in one of my devotional booklets a quote about humility. It said, “Humility is not claiming we have nothing to offer in service to God; humility is

recognizing that all we do have to offer comes from God.” Now that puts a whole different spotlight on ‘humility’, doesn’t it? Once again, I’ll reiterate that I am not a theologian, but when I think of God sending Jesus to earth to be born as a tiny baby, I find myself thinking thoughts like ‘lowly and unassuming’. Perhaps more importantly, ‘humble’. Think of Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a ‘donkey’ not on a raring stallion and as a mighty warrior or king. Does that seem ‘humble’ to you? It sure does to me. Think of being stripped, beaten and later crucified not because of what you did but rather unjustly and in a most cruel and inhumane way. Is that humble? If all those illustrations show us ‘humility’ in action, they also illustrate the ‘power’ that a humble action might evoke. In our own personal trials, often

we strive by our intellect or by our financial or perhaps influence to move ahead only to find our way blocked. But, sometimes when we stop struggling and turn to our loving God in humility, we find a way out of our dilemma. We may be weak. We may be struggling. We may be humble indeed, but you know what…we can overcome with God’s help. That may sound ‘arrogant’ but I don’t think it is. Because it is when we acknowledge God’s majesty and turn to Him in humility that we find the power to overcome. I think the ‘humble’ part of this important equation is the realization that while we may be weak, God enables us to overcome through His power, love and grace. I feel humbled when I acknowledge God’s love, wisdom, power and all His other attributes. But you know what…I also feel empowered. How I can feel weak and

strong at the same time, I’ll never understand or be able to explain. Scripture says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” It doesn’t suggest to me that we withdraw because we feel weak and weary, but rather that we turn to God for strength. And I do believe that God’s strength and power can and does abide in my weakness. But it is up to me to acknowledge this gift and give thanks for it. It’s fine to be humble, but that is no excuse for not using the talents God gave to us. Rather, I believe God can use our weaknesses if we but offer to serve. We’ll never know if we refuse to try. I’m convinced God can use all of us if we but trust that His strength will enable us to cope with whatever life brings our way.

Bringing seasoning instincts to the U.S. NEW YORK (AP) – Cumin s e e d s o r m u s t a rd s e e d s ? O n e teaspoon or two? Added first or last? Indian grandmothers will go to the mat over issues like this, but famed cookbook author Madhur Jaffrey says these grannies — and the grannies of all South Asia — share a single, striking power: a near mystical knowledge of spice. “It’s like a palette of colors,” says Jaffrey, whose most recent book is “At Home with Madhur Jaffrey: Simple, Delectable Dishes from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka” (Knopf, 2010). “You mix two colors, you know what you get as a painter. The same in India. You know what spices to mix. It’s that mastery that makes South Asia totally unique.” J a f f r e y, a n a w a r d - w i n n i n g actress, made her name introducing Americans to Indian cooking. Her newest book is her first to take on all of South Asia, a decision she says was prompted by a realization that culturally and culinarily speaking, these countries share more similarities than differences. “I wouldn’t characterize it by nations, because to my mind these are artificial nations,” says Jaffrey, noting that little more than 50 years ago much of the region was one country. “These are states with their own cultural traditions.” Take the example of fish curry. In Bangladesh it gets mustard oil

Mystical knowledge of spices spreads beyond South Asia and curry leaves; in Sri Lanka, coconut milk and fennel; and in the Indian state of Kerala, an extra dose of spicy ground black pepper. The specifics may differ, but the dishes are all joined by their identity as curries, and by their masterful, even reverent use of spice. “I always say I could be in a kitchen blind-folded in India and I could say ’This is a Kerala kitchen,’ ’This is Tamil Nadu,’” Jaffrey says. “You can smell the fish and mustard oil in Bengal. You can smell the mustard greens in Kashmir.” South Asians coax myriad flavors from the same spices by varying their combinations and cooking methods, Jaffrey says. “You can get 10 flavors out of the same spice,” she says. “You can roast them, pop them in hot oil. We instinctively know all this.” But spices also are used for their medicinal properties. For instance, asafetida acts as a digestive, and therefore is used in lentils. Fennel and black pepper sometimes are ground into tea for colds. And turmeric, considered an antiseptic, gets sprinkled everywhere. “We put it on cuts, and we put it on our faces when there are mosquitoes, and you put it on food because it’s an antiseptic

inside you,” Jaffrey says. For home cooks hoping to harness the power of the South Asian spice tub, Jaffrey offers some tips: Start slow Yo u d o n ’ t h a v e t o m a k e a whole Indian meal, she says. Better to try one dish at a time. “If you’re doing a roast, pair it with an Indian vegetable, broccoli or cauliflower, so you’re really learning what the flavors are.” Be choosy Resist the urge to snap up all the pretty spices in the store; you’ll be overwhelmed. “Look at a recipe and only buy what you need for that,” she says. “As your repertoire increases you’ll get more spices.” Ditto for equipment. The only special items you’ll need are a blender and a coffee grinder. Be brave Jaffrey says she’d like to see people become familiar with two items that get little attention: curry leaves for their unique, herbal-citrus flavor, and asafetida. “Asafetida, people can barely say it, but it’s so essential to Indian food,” she says. “And medicinally it’s so important people should get to know it.” ••• Punjabi Lamb Kebabs Chaat masala is a mixture of hot and sour spices that is used as

a condiment on these traditional Indian kebabs. It is widely available at Indian grocers and contains sour mango powder, roasted cumin, cayenne and other seasonings. If you can’t find it, substitute a dash of cayenne, roasted ground cumin seeds and a few squirts of lime juice. Start to finish: 25 minutes (plus overnight marinating) Servings: 6 3/4 cup whole-milk plain Greek-style yogurt 6 tablespoons mustard oil or extra-virgin olive oil 1 1/4 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 2 cloves garlic, crushed to a pulp 2 teaspoons finely grated peeled fresh ginger 2 teaspoons garam masala 2 1/2 pounds boneless lamb from the leg, cut into 1-inch cubes (often sold already cubed as stew meat) 3 tablespoons melted butter 1 teaspoon chaat masala (optional, see note above) In a medium bowl, combine the yogurt, olive oil, salt, cayenne,

garlic, ginger and garam masala. Beat well with a whisk. Add the lamb and mix again. Cover and refrigerate overnight or up to 24 hours. When ready to cook, heat the broiler. Divide the lamb cubes between 6 skewers. Brush each generously with the melted butter. Rest the ends of each skewer on the rim of a broiling tray (to keep the lamb elevated and not resting on the pan) and place the tray about 5 inches from the source of heat. Broil for 5 to 7 minutes on the first side, then turn the skewers and broil for another 5 to 7 minutes. Sprinkle the chaat masala over the top and serve. Travel Travel briefs Despite November plunge, Smokies visits steady NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — As 2010 comes to a close, visits to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are keeping pace with 2009 traffic. Through November, visits to the 500,000-acre park on the TennesseeNorth Carolina border were 1.7 percent ahead of year-before visits to date despite a steep November drop at the Gatlinburg park entrance and a year plagued by road construction. In 2009, there were nearly 9.5 million visitors to the park. “Flat is the new up,” said Bob Miller, a spokesman for the National Park Service in Gatlinburg, who said keeping pace with 2009 is an accomplishment in a year when many tourist destinations show strong declines. In November, overall Smokies visits fell 12.4 percent, the Park Service said. The decline was most dramatic at the Gatlinburg entrance, where traffic was off 25.3 percent. The other two main park entrances were also down — 12.3 percent at Townsend and 2.5 percent at Cherokee, N.C. The park’s 13 outlying areas showed a 5.3 percent increase in visitors for November. Miller says the November decline could have been because the fall colors were on time this year after late autumn foliage peaks in the past few years. “This year, the foliage peaked on time in the last week or two of October,” Miller said. “In the last several years, it’s gone well into November.” Miller noted that, while many people book vacations to the Smokies well in advance, the park is within a day’s drive of hundreds of thousands of potential visitors, who can change their travel plans to fit the season. Park officials think many of those people simply came in October. In addition, the eleventh month of 2010 was dreary in the mountains this year. “This November was rainy and not very pleasant at all,” Miller said. Business is booming in the Smokies gateway city of Pigeon Forge. Leon Downey, executive director of the city’s Department of Tourism, said gross business receipts were up 5 percent through October in a city where nearly every business is related to tourism. Lodging expenditures were up 7 percent. “2010 has been a very good turnaround year for Pigeon Forge,” Downey said. Another factor that could have cut into park visits was road construction. Last spring, three important visitor routes were closed at the same time. Those included Cades

January 27, 2011

Cove Loop Road, Clingman’s Dome Road and the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. The later was closed through the summer. Outside the park, major road construction continues on state Rt. 66 — the major tourism route to the Smokies from Interstate 40 through Sevierville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. The extensive project began in 2009 and is being done in three phases. More than 41,000 vehicles travel the route every day. Yvette Martinez, a spokeswoman in Knoxville for the Tennessee Department of Transportation, said the completed project will provide a six-lane route with a wide grassy median and turn lanes for businesses and tourist attractions. The Pigeon Forge portion of the plan was completed earlier, Martinez said. The current work is improving Rt. 66 from the interstate to Sevierville. “The contracts for Phase 2 were let in August 2010,” Martinez said. “That phase is scheduled for completion in November 2012.” Since bidding has not begun for Phase 3, a total project completion time hasn’t been set.

Fourth straight year of bad news for AC casinos ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Atlantic City’s 11 casinos have just finished their fourth straight year of plunging revenues and shrinking market share. Figures to be released Monday afternoon by the state Casino Control Commission are expected to show the nation’s second-largest gambling market has lost nearly a third of its business since the end of 2006. A decline in the range of 10 percent for 2010 is expected. The big difference this year is that New Jersey lawmakers are preparing radical surgery for their ailing patient. Gov. Chris Christie’s Atlantic City rescue plan is making its way through the legislature, with key votes scheduled for Monday afternoon. It includes a state-run tourism district in the casino zone, and less regulation for the gambling halls.

Egypt displeased with treatment of obelisk in NYC NEW YORK (AP) — An Egyptian archaeologist has chided New York City over the condition of Cleopatra’s Needle, an ancient column in Central Park. Supreme Council of Antiquities secretary general Zahi Hawass w r o t e t o N e w Yo r k M a y o r

Michael Bloomberg complaining his city isn’t taking care of the 3,500-year-old obelisk. Egypt gave the stone monument to the city as a gift

more than a century ago. The monument sits on a knoll near the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Hawass says Cleopatra’s Needle is badly weathered and

its hieroglyphics are worn away. He says no effort has been made to conserve it. He says if the city doesn’t act Egypt may seek to have it returned.

A Windy City wonder Chicago’s John Hancock Center By BILL TUCKER Of The Edge

I

t’s not the tallest building in Chicago’s skyline, but it is still the most distinctive.

At 100 stories – that’s 1,127-feet – the John Hancock Center remains one of the Windy City’s most noticeable landmarks. Located at 875 North Michigan Ave., the top end of Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, the Hancock Center remains a modern marvel. Visitors can take an elevator to the 94th floor’s observation deck or 95th floor’s restaurant. A number of businesses call the Hancock home, too, and its location next to the Water Tower Place shopping mall makes it an ideal spot to spend a day. Most visitors opt to visit the Observatory, taking one of the 20 mph elevators up to the 94th floor. Once there, visitors can opt to take a free, multimedia Sky Tour which includes the use of an iPhone-like device that gives guests a better idea of what they’re seeing. Credit-card operated interactive telescopes bring the Windy City closer for those willing to spend the extra money. All of those things add to the experience, but just walking to the north windows and looking down on Lake Shore Drive is still my favorite part of the visit. An added bonus this winter is the Hancock’s “Skating in the Sky” experience. A small, simulated ice rink on the 94th floor allows anyone willing to skate an opportunity to do so. The Lavazza Espression Cafe also occupies space on the west side of the observatory. Guests can sip a hot cup of coffee or espesso or a cool glass of beer or wine as they take in the scenery 1,000 feet below. The cafe also offers salads, sandwiches and baked goods for those who get hungry being up so high.

The south side of the 94th floor is split in two as the outside portion of the building is exposed to the elements with its open-air walkway. (Don’t worry, you won’t fall.) General admission to the Observatory – which is open daily from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. – is $15 for those over the age of 12. Children 3 to 11 are admitted for $10 and those under 3 are free. The Signature Room at the 95th is an upscale eatery that offers lunch and dinner every day. This sky-high dining experience, which also includes a lounge on the 96th floor, is not connected to the Observatory – a separate elevator ride is required. Reservations for The Signature Room at the 95th are strongly recommended – as is a healthy wallet. Looking at the Hancock – from the inside or outside – it’s hard to believe the building has been open for almost 41 years. Construction began in 1967 and the building was completed in 1970. Currently, the Hancock is the 18th tallest building in the world, the fourth tallest in the United States and the third tallest in Chicago. Most of the building isn’t open to the public as more than 850,000 square feet is devoted to office space and 49 floors serve as residential condominiums. Floors 4 through 12 make up the tower’s indoor parking lot which is capable of handling 710 automobiles on any given day. The Hancock Center has its own U.S. Post Office and there are three different restaurants located inside the building. Inside this city-within-a-city are a travel agency, shoe repair service, a bank, a dry cleaning/alterations shop, a newsstand and an office supply store. Retail shops – including Best Buy and The North Face – occupy spots on the ground level. For more information on visiting the John Hancock Center, go to www.hancockobservatory.com or call 1888-875-VIEW (8439).

T

he skies are a bit gray and the snow seems to keep coming, but don’t let that stop you from making plans to get out and do some things. We take for granted that just a few miles up the road is one of the world’s best places to view eagles and see them in their nesting habitats. There are also a number of other events – some indoors, some out – that are great for the whole family. Shake those winter blahs and get out and about! For those who made plans to attend the Mason Hollow Maple Syrup Tapping, this year’s event is cancelled. For more information, email hindelang@gtec.com or call 1-800-258-6645. Fun at the ol’ restaurant Mike Shannon’s Steaks and Seafood celebrates 25th anniversary By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge

M

ike Shannon, a former Major League Baseball player and current radio broadcaster, has another accolade to add to his full list of accomplishments. He has owned a successful restaurant that has been doing a booming business for 25 years in downtown St. Louis. On Friday, Jan. 14, Mike

Shannon’s Steaks and Seafood, located at 620 Market St. in downtown St. Louis, hosted a VIP celebration in honor of their 25th anniversary. It was wall-towall people attending the event, including many well-known names. Of course Mike Shannon was in attendance along with his family, which includes his daughter, Pat Shannon-VanMatre, who is also the restaurant owner, and Mike Shannon’s grandson and Pat Shannon-VanMatre’s son, Gary VanMatre, Jr., who is the General Manger of Mike Shannon’s restaurant.

Former Cardinal great Red Schoendienst, along with Sports Broadcaster Jay Randolph, who has had 50 years in the sports announcing business, were in the crowd to give their support. Also, baseball greats like former Cardinal John Mabry and White Sox lefthanded pitcher Mark Buehrle were also in attendance. A number of television faces were also there making the rounds and enjoying the festivities – Randi Naughton and John Pertzborn, both of Fox 2, and KSDK’s Ann Rubin. There was a presentation from the city of St. Louis, where a proclamation was presented to Mike Shannon, announcing that Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, was to be deemed “Mike Shannon’s Steaks and Seafood Restaurant Day” and was signed by Mayor Francis Slay. It was also announced that since

its inception, it is estimated that Shannon’s has served more than 750,000 steaks. That is a lot of steak. Originally, Shannon’s was located across from Kiener Plaza, at Chestnut and Seventh Street. It was at that location for more than 20 years. About four-and-a-half years ago, it moved to its current location, which was formerly a Mark Twain Bank location. Since the building was originally a bank, there was a vault built in the center. When redesigning the building, the staff used the vault by surrounding it with their wine cellar and inside is an intimate dining area – a really useful and innovative concept to utilize what was already there, but making it there own. Probably the most unique concept of Shannon’s restaurant is the fact that it houses much of Mike Shannon’s impressive

baseball collection and memorabilia. More than 350 autographed baseballs are on display in a glassed-in, lit, tower that is located in the center of the dining room. There are a number of autographed jerseys showcased behind glass that include Cardinal greats as well as many other players from other sports. Nick Zotos is the Executive Chef and he always puts a perfect steak selection or perfect seafood selection in front of his diners. He attributes the success of the restaurant to equal parts talent and dedication in his culinary team. Mike Shannon’s is a unique dining experience, no matter whether you go before or after a game or for a special occasion. The menu is on the fine dining price scale, but is well worth a trip, especially for a memorable

QuickGlance Movie Reviews

“True Grit”

One of the most mainstream, crowd-pleasing films Joel and Ethan Coen have ever made. It’s sort of a screwball Western, if you will, with vivid performances a n d s t r i k i n g l y v a s t , p i c t u re s q u e v i s t a s , t h e a l w a y s gorgeo u s w o r k o f t h e a l w a y s g re a t R o g e r D eakins, the Coens’ frequent cinematographer. But it’s a minor entry from the writing-directing brothers, especially when you consider the inventiveness and strength of their canon and the close aesthetic resemblance to “No Country for Old Men,” their masterpiece. While “True Grit” is entertaining, it’s also surprisingly lacking in emotional resonance, as well as the intriguing sense of ambiguity that so often permeates Coen pictures. Only toward the end does it feel like anything is at stake, but at least it’s enjoyable while you’re waiting. Hailee Steinfeld in her film debut is a revelation as Mattie Ross, the 19th-century pioneer teenager who demands vengeance for her father ’s murder. She seeks help from a man she hears has true grit: one-eyed, alcoholic U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn. Jeff Bridges plays the role that earned John Wayne his only Academy Award as gruff and grizzled, a lawman who’s lived a long and well-lubricated life, but who also has attained a certain Zen-like self-possession about it. Matt Damon again proves he can do anything, joining the duo on the trail as a preening Texas Ranger. RATED: PG-13 for some intense sequences of western violence including disturbing images. RUNNING TIME: 110 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“Country Strong”

Some of the best country songs are the ones that tell a story — ones that feature vivid imagery, a strong narrative drive and a killer emotional payoff. In telling the story of a selfdestructive singing superstar, this hints at the possibility of delivering that kind of moving experience, but ultimately it’s too meandering and uneven to ever truly tug at your heart. Writer-director Shana Feste’s film occupies an uncomfortable sort of middle ground. It’s not rich enough, and its characters aren’t developed enough, to be a searing drama or a portrait of artistic torment; “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” this is not. But at the same time, it isn’t over-the-top enough to be enjoyed as a divalicious guilty pleasure. Still, “Country Strong” has its moments, mainly in the music, all of which is enjoyable if not earth-shattering and is actually sung by its stars.

January 27, 2011

Gwyneth Paltrow plays Kelly Canter, whose boozy benders are legendary. Her husband-manager (Tim McGraw) pulls her out of rehab early to put her back on the road. Along for the ride are the honky-tonk hipster with whom she’s having an affair (Garrett Hedlund) and a beauty queen with her own dreams of country stardom (Leighton Meester). What follows is a series of flirtations and dalliances, breakdowns and inebriated episodes, none of which seems to carry any more significance than any other. RATED: PG-13 for thematic elements involving alcohol abuse and some sexual content. RUNNING TIME: 111 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“Season of the Witch”

So here’s the gimmick: This takes place during the 14th century, but everyone speaks in contemporary language, which might have been acceptable if the dialogue were clever or intelligent or funny or, you know, good. Instead, Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman are the knights who say ... nothing of any particular note in a supernatural action thriller that’s never actually thrilling. You expect this kind of schlock in January, but “Season of the Witch” isn’t even bad in an enjoyable way. The scenery is drab, the battles are interchangeable, and no one seems particularly interested in being here. At the same time, Dominic Sena (who previously directed Cage in “Gone in Sixty Seconds”) never flat-out goes for it in a schlocky, B-horror kind of way. What we’re left with is just bloated, boring and utterly forgettable. Cage isn’t even in full-on, wheels-off mode here, sadly; instead, he delivers his lines in a dreary monotone. After killing untold numbers of men in the name of god during the Crusades, Cage’s character, Behmen, and his wisecracking sidekick, Felson, decide to pack it in. But to avoid being imprisoned for desertion, they must transport a suspected witch (Claire Foy) to a faraway abbey for trial. RATED: PG-13 for thematic elements, violence and disturbing content. RUNNING TIME: 100 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.

“The Dilemma”

Add to Vince Vaughn’s canon of gonzo enthusiasm the blissful image of him using a makeshift blowtorch on a suburban block, screaming, “I’m going to burn your face off!” His act maybe isn’t as fresh as it once was, but Vaughn still puts a charge into movies. Ron Howard’s comedy begins and

ends in hokey cliche, but for a brief period in the middle, it carries a slight hint of Billy Wilder, playing uncomfortable stuff for not entirely dumb laughs. Chicago engineers and buddies Ronny Valentine (Vaughn) and Nick Brannen (Kevin James) each have long-term partners: Ronny’s girlfriend, Beth (Jennifer Connelly), and Nick’s wife, Geneva (Winona Ryder). After Ronny sees Geneva cheating on Nick with another man (Channing Tatum), he descends into a world of infidelity where seemingly everyone is cheating. Unfortunately, Howard’s light-but-thorny examination of marital disfunction becomes distracted by pratfalls and standard bromance comedy. Ryder matches Vaughn’s wildness, but Connelly isn’t given a chance and James isn’t up to it. Sports metaphors proliferate until the film sinks into them, finally, senselessly concluding on an NHL rink. RATED: PG-13 for mature thematic elements involving sexual content. RUNNING TIME: 110 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“The Green Hornet”

Someday soon, hopefully, 3-D will be exposed for the sham that it is. We will all realize that, for the vast majority of films, shooting in or converting to 3-D offers absolutely nothing from a narrative standpoint, and very little visually; all this gimmick really adds is money at the box office through higher ticket prices. But until that blessed day comes, we will continue to be bombarded with mediocre action pictures like this. It didn’t have to be this way. There was reason for hope. “The Green Hornet” comes from director Michel Gondry, who’s known for visually inspired films including “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “The Science of Sleep.” Hearing his name attached to a big, studio superhero movie — starring Seth Rogen, of all people — may have sounded incongruent, but at least it was intriguing. Instead, Gondry has come up with a surprisingly generic, bombastic action movie. Based on the 1930s radio show, “The Green Hornet” stars Rogen as Britt Reid, playboy heir to the Los Angeles publishing empire built by his father (Tom Wilkinson). But when his father dies suddenly, Britt realizes he has a chance to use his fortune for good, and decides to become a vigilante crime fighter with the help of his father’s mechanic, the softspoken but ever-resourceful Kato (Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou). RATED: PG-13 for sequences of violent action, language, sensuality and drug content. RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

Movies “Blue Valentine” captures marital agony By DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press The Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling marital drama “Blue Valentine” is agonizing to watch yet relentlessly compelling, even illuminating, playing almost like a sober documentary rather than a narrative film. Though fictional, “Blue Valentine” is a document of sorts, a chronicle of a crumbling marriage that often feels as honest and painful as if it were a nonfiction film about real people putting each other through absolute hell. That sense of eavesdropping authenticity results from the commitment of Williams and Gosling, who remained signed on to star for years before filming finally started, and the perseverance of director and co-writer Derek Cianfrance, who honed the script for 12 years. The behind-the-scenes troubles for the film — including an initial adults-only NC-17 rating for sexual content — reflect the bumps and bruises of marriage that Cianfrance set out to illustrate. Like any marriage, the result is a beautifully idiosyncratic portrait of a relationship that starts with the brightest of hopes and inevitably falters as the years and mileage accumulate. “Blue Valentine” follows a pivotal day in the life of Cindy and Dean, a married couple spending a night away from their young daughter (Faith Wladyka, in her screen debut) in hopes of renewing the romantic spark that has steadily faded between them. Williams’ Cindy is a medical assistant who once dreamed of being a doctor, and Gosling’s Dean is a housepainter whose only aspiration

They once held deep affection and passion for each other, but the unasked question with which both grapple is whether they ever were truly compatible for the long haul. Cianfrance intersperses the present-day marital scenes with lovingly nostalgic flashbacks to the start of Cindy and Dean’s romance six years earlier. The authenticity is heightened by Cianfrance’s filming methods. The flashbacks were shot first, on Super

16mm film using a single lens and handheld cameras, lending those portions a hazier look, like happy memories of a time of spontaneity and possibility. The present-day scenes have a sharper, unforgiving quality, shot using two digital cameras fixed on tripods, with long lenses, one each following Williams and Gosling, allowing the actors to prowl the sets at will. The scenes from their marriage were shot a month after the flashbacks. Williams and Gosling

had a contest to see who could pack on the most weight in that time to help show the intervening years (Williams won, gaining 15 pounds). But camera styles and gaining weight are incidental to the film’s main strength — the raw, ferocious, punishing performances delivered by Williams and Gosling. There are moments of sublime sweetness in the early days of Cindy and Dean’s love story that could melt the heart of the most unsentimental cynic. To see where it all leads as

they drift apart is heartbreaking — certainly not as heartbreaking as watching friends in real life break apart, but about as close as you can come in a film. When Williams and Gosling fight, make love, trade jokes, share an awkward conversation in the car, every second feels real. It’s probably that sense of tough truth that led raters at the Motion Picture Association of America to brand “Blue Valentine” with an NC17 rating for sexual content.

Rogen is perfect in “The Green Hornet” By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge “They’re putting out a ‘Green Horne’t movie in January? In 3-D?” Starring Seth Rogen?” Imagine increasing incredulity as you ask yourself those three questions out loud. Welcome to my world of wonder. Such was the situation I found myself in reviewing the 3-D release calendar early last Summer. America was with me, it seemed, in bashing early notice of the film based on the 75-year-old pulp franchise. The radio saga cum film serial cum television series isn’t especially famous, but it is well-regarded by its fans (particularly those who loved Bruce Lee in the 1960s TV version). Why, then, would they make a feature starring Rogen, that doofus from Pineapple Express and Superbad? And will anybody be able to distinguish it from the “Green

January 27, 2011

Lantern” movie coming out later in the year? Then things got really weird when the buzz kept building in the positive direction, fueled mainly by test screenings, and it became a moderate hit, opening to $40 million on MLK Weekend (due to terrible Christmas holdovers titles?). Rogen is perfect to portray Britt Reid, slovenly playboy. That is, he would have before he lost some weight and got in pretty good shape to handle the physical demands of this role. All that remains of his doughy, slacker i m a g e i s t h e s c r i p t h e c o - w ro t e w i t h partner Evan Goldberg. The two actually turn in amazing work here because the movie is hilarious in several unexpected ways. Despite finding Rogen unappealing as an action star, they actually work the story to make him the more plucky comic relief of a crime-fighting duo that springs to life after the untimely passing of Reid’s father, newspaper magnate James Reid (Tom Wilkinson).

It’s not the smoothest transition, but we’re along for a wild ride as Britt recruits Kato (Jay Chou), James’s mechanic and valet, to help him avenge the rampant crime of Los Angeles that his father so often spoke out against. Kato is the real superhero, a true master of martial arts fighting style, and many jokes hinge on which of the two is really the sidekick. Under the guise of his newspaper, The Daily Sentinel, Britt is able to both improve the Green Hornet’s standing as a tabloid criminal, the image he and Kato decide to spread in order to fool the bad guys into a false sense of brotherly security, and has resources to help find the actual vice and graft that they want to eradicate. Helping out here is his father ’s trusted publisher (Edward James Olmos), a brainier-than-expected secretary (Cameron Diaz, playing mostly against type), and a shiny DA (David Harbour). For lack of anything more sophisticated to say, the tale works as a movie. Maybe that’s

why the characters have been so stalwart against the test of time. Kato uses a ton of awesome gadgets and some truly inspired hand-to-hand combat to dispatch thugs, led by Chudnofsky (Oscar winner Christoph Waltz), as he and Britt ride around in “Black Beauty”, a suped-up-beyond-description vintage sedan, complete with a turntable for p l a y i n g c l a s s i c a l m u s i c . “ T h e G re e n Hornet” is an action-comedy where the emphasis couldn’t be more firmly put on the comedy part. It also benefits from the frantic direction of Michel Gondry, the established director of music videos and the cult classic “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” Kudos to all of them for surprising us about what this movie could be. ••• “The Green Hornet” runs 121 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sequences of violent action, language, sensuality, and drug content. I give this film three stars out of four.

Movies "No Strings Attached" wastes solid premise By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press “No Strings Attached” begins with an intriguing premise: A guy and a girl agree to have sex wherever they want, whenever they want, without all those pesky emotions getting in the way. This is apparently what the kids these days, with their rock ’n’ roll music and their video games, refer to as being “friends with benefits.” What’s intriguing about it is that the girl in the equation, a young doctor played by Natalie Portman, is the one who suggests this arrangement, and the guy, an aspiring TV writer played by Ashton Kutcher, is the one who breaks the rules and falls in love. It’s a reversal of traditional gender roles, and an indication that we might be in for something fresh, daring and different. Except, we’re not. T h i s ro m a n t i c c o m e d y f ro m Ivan Reitman — the first film he’s directed since the less-thansuper “My Super Ex-Girlfriend” from 2006 — falls into all the usual traps. Of course, you have to have obstacles in this kind of movie. Something has to keep the characters apart before they can enjoy their ultimate reconciliation. But the fear of commitment that plagues Portman’s character is enough of a contrivance without all the additional troubles that get piled on. Letting the tension evolve naturally from the insecurities of relatable, well-developed figures would have been preferable, but once Kutcher ’s character goes all soft and gooey, the movie does

Associated Press

Ashton Kutcher, right, and Natalie Portman are shown in a scene from “No Strings Attached.” too. For a while, though, the very modern relationship that writer Elizabeth Meriwether lays out for us has a snappy, spirited energy and an appealing, unexpected raunchy streak. Portman’s Emma and Kutcher ’s Adam first hooked up as awkward adolescents at summer camp, then ran into each other again 10 years later at a fraternity party, and then again a few more years later in Los Angeles as attractive adults who

are both up-and-coming in their careers. Emma works 80 hours a week as a doctor in residence, then comes home to wisecracking roommates played by Greta Gerwig, Mindy Kaling and Guy Branum, among the wellcast supporting players. Adam works as an assistant on a peppy, “Glee”-type series, having grown

up around television as the son o f a l e g e n d a r y a c t o r, p l a y e d pompously by Kevin Kline. (Lake Bell is dead-on as a driven, highstrung producer on the show, who’s secretly smitten by Adam but too much of a social moron to act on her feelings.) But Kline, who starred as a regular guy who pretends to

be the U.S. president in one of Reitman’s smartest and most winning films, 1993’s “Dave,” doesn’t get much to work with here. And that’s one of the movie’s greatest downfalls. His character is a cliche — an aging womanizer clinging to h i s y o u t h — a n d p o p c u l t u re references involving his interest in Burning Man and Lil’ Wayne feel uncomfortable and forced. Adam’s dad also steals away his latest girlfriend, which initially is what sends Adam into a drunken tailspin and inspires him to say yes to Emma’s nohassle plan. Text messaging helps facilitate their trysts; as Adam’s friends point out, “Where r u?” i s s o m u c h m o re t h a n j u s t a question intended to determine someone’s location. Portman is intelligent and confident here as she calls all the shots, and while Kutcher is in his usual agreeable puppydog mode — and doesn’t appear to have been challenged in the slightest by this material — the two make a sufficiently likable duo. Nothing spectacular, but acceptable. The ads for “No Strings Attached” ask us to ponder whether friends can have sex and still remain just friends. The answer is never really in doubt, but “No Strings Attached” forces t o s l o g t h ro u g h a l l t h e u s u a l misunderstandings, missed opportunities and potential extracurricular mates before we get there.
