A taste of Korea in Edwardsville New restaurant offers a twist on tastes

By JULIA BIGGS Of the Edge

Oriental Spoon is the latest restaurant to open in Edwardsville and one that offers a unique cuisine – Korean. As the name reflects, this restaurant doesn’t boast of being a typical Korean restaurant as you’d find in St. Louis. That’s actually by design as the menu is a mix of traditional Korean and a little Japanese cuisine with an American-fusion twist. The restaurant is located at 229 Harvard Dr., behind Buffalo Wild Wings. Oriental Spoon’s story actually begins back in 2004 when Tae Kim came to Edwardsville as an exchange student at Metro East Lutheran High School. Tae graduated from MELHS and then attended his freshman year at SIUE. Tae’s sister Na visited Edwardsville and Na and Tae both returned to Korea for a while. Tae returned in the summer of 2008. Na followed a short time later and moved permanently to Edwardsville with her husband Byeong Choe and their son. Together the three family members began planning the opening of Oriental Spoon. Although Na and Byeong speak a little English, they are still learning the language and as a result, Tae, who still struggles at times with the English language, served as an interpreter for them. Tae explained that they decided to open the restaurant for several re a s o n s . S e n s i n g t h a t m a n y Americans are now eating healthier, they felt Korean cuisine could be quite popular here. “Korean food is healthier than food around here,” Tae said interpreting for Na. Tae also pointed out that they felt there was an opportunity within the metro Korean restaurant community to open a restaurant that was American-friendly. While there are several Korean restaurants in St. Louis, Tae said that most of them cater to the Korean community, had Korean names and listed menu items familiar to Koreans but not necessarily Americans. Thus, they chose the name Oriental Spoon, have used an Asian style décor in the restaurant and have developed menu items that are more American-friendly in an effort to make customers feel comfortable with trying a Korean cuisine. Menu items are also listed by name and have a coordinating number for easy ordering. Tae, Na and Byeong are all very conscious about perfecting each menu item to meet the expectations of the American palate which is why the past couple of months Oriental Spoon has been open, the menu has

Na Kim, at left, and Byeong Seok Choe, at right, present Korean and Japanese dishes offered at Oriental Spoon. been smaller and they’ve referred to it as a soft opening. They also have provided free meals to their workers since opening in hopes of learning ways to mix their traditional Korean food and culture with western culture. One of the examples of the many things they have learned already about adapting traditional Korean food to American culture occurred when they first served Jajamen, a black bean noodle pasta with a variety of vegetables. “We boiled the noodles first and put the Jajamen on top. That’s the Korean way,” Tae said. But what many customers didn’t know was that the entrée is meant to be mixed together before eaten which Koreans typically do prior to eating this dish. “Many customers just ate them. Did not mix them,” Tae said. “Now we mix it in the kitchen. We never thought about mixing it. We didn’t know.” Although some menu items have been adjusted such as Jajamen to meet American culture expectations, others have been a hit from the beginning. Bul Go Gi, one of Korea’s most popular beef dishes made from sliced sirloin prime beef marinated in a mixture of sweet soy sauce, has been one of their most popular dishes. Tae said that Bul Go Gi was a very popular dish in Korea and that it was once reserved, “back in the day,” for the Emperor. Chicken Curry Katsu, a breaded, deep fried chicken breast cutlet with

Japanese-style curry sauce, and Don-Katsu, a Japanese version of a breaded, deep fried pork cutlet with house special Donkatsu sauce are also equally popular as is shrimp rice, bacon rice and kimchi, a traditional Korean dish. Tae pointed out that the rice they use isn’t the typical rice that other restaurants use. “We’re using the same rice as the sushi,” he said. “So, it’s a little bit bigger and more chewy. It’s a higher quality than regular rice.” There are also several items on the menu that will be familiar like spring rolls, coconut shrimp, Ramen noodle soup and the ugly corndog, an Oriental Spoon special corndog. Ramen noodle soup has become a favorite for many and Tae recommended the coconut shrimp as they prepare them by hand. Referring to the Oriental Spoon menu as “fusion food,” Tae said that everything on the menu is a “popular food in Korea right now.” Tae pointed out that Korean food is all about the combination of meat and vegetables together and that vegetables are a big part of each meal. “In Korean culture, we don’t just eat meat. We always eat meat and vegetables together,” Tae said. “Our food is healthy.” He also noted that every Korean food eaten has a particular purpose – even teas. While Oriental Spoon carries several Americanized teas such as green tea, Earl Gray black tea and mango passion fruit tea, they also

offer traditional Korean teas such as Job’s tears (Adlay) tea, Korean citron tea, Korean quince tea, Korean ginger tea and Japanese apricot (plum) tea. “Korean tea is not tea bag tea,” Tae said. “There’s fruit in there. And that’s why there’s a lot of Vitamin C. It’s good for your skin, good for your throat.” Korean ginger, known around the world for its quality, is in the Korean ginger tea and is recommended by Korean doctors for those who have colds. “Quince tea is really good for your throat, citron is food for your throat, skin, has lots of vitamin C,” Tae said translating for Na. He also said plum tea was good for stomach problems. Tae described Job’s tears tea as a peanut almond, oatmeal tea. “You can see there’s actual oats in the tea,” he said. “This tea is really good for diets, for ladies, good for skin. It’s good for a woman’s body.” Certainly the three of them take great pride in every item on the menu and strive to find the right “fusion mix” while providing a quality product. They travel at least once a week to Chicago to purchase traditional Korean product that’s imported to the Chicago Korean community. “Every thing we use in here we go to market to get it,” Tae said. “We want it to be fresh. We want it to be quality stuff because we believe that it’s more tasty. Vegetables and meat are more important than the sauce. That’s why we go to market ourselves.”

Currently during the Oriental Spoon’s continuing soft opening, they will be open Monday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and closed on Sundays. They plan to expand the menu by adding a few more spicy traditional Korean menu items in the next week or two as they officially switch from a soft opening to a grand opening. After the switch, hours will be 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Although Tae emphasized that they’d stay open later if customers came in close to closing time. In the meantime, the threesome continues to enjoy meeting community members and learning more about Western culture. “We learn every day,” Tae said translating for Na. Na also noted that she was happy to be living in Edwardsville. “It’s a good town for education and her child – people are nice,” Tae said translating. “She used to live in Seoul, Korea, where everything is busy – so many people. Now it’s kind of calm. She can get some rest and air is better than in Korea. In Korea there’s lots of cars, pollution.” As they continue to introduce the community to Korean food, first and foremost their goal is simple. “We try to make every customer happy with our food and our service,” Tae said. “She’s the mom so she’s making the same food (for customers) that she makes for her son.”

Build your own Lincoln sites Anyone with a computer, printer, scissors and glue can now be the proud owner of five new scale models of Abraham Lincoln sites, including his Home and Tomb, joining five other scale models that debuted earlier this year. The Illinois Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission’s “Build Your Own Lincoln Sites” project now offers HOscale models of the Lincoln Home and Lincoln Tomb, both in Springfield; Beecher Hall in Jacksonville; the Shastid Cabin in Pittsfield; and the Vandalia Statehouse. Each of these five historic building models can be printed on your own card stock and assembled and glued together for display. The models may be accessed free of charge at

www.lookingforlincoln.com or www.Illinois-History.gov, and each has easy-to-follow assembly instructions that will have you building history in no time. The five latest entries in the “Build Your Own Lincoln Sites” complete a series of ten and join five that debuted earlier this year: The Old State Capitol and Great Western Depot in Springfield, the Berry-Lincoln Store at Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site near Petersburg, Old Main at Knox College in Galesburg, and the Thomas Lincoln Home at Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site near Charleston. The buildings range in difficulty and scale from the Thomas Lincoln Home measuring two-and-a-half by six inches and requiring two sheets of cardstock, to the Old State Capitol model’s more monumental 18 by 24 inches that requires 41 sheets of cardstock. The Lincoln sites models were patterned after the historic building models that are available as part of the “Build Your Own Main Street” section at www.Illinois-History. gov. Ten buildings from Illinois Main Street downtowns are available to download from that site.

Patti LaBelle, The O’Jays will perform at the Fox By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Patti LaBelle and The O’Jays will perform at the Fabulous Fox Theatre for the Valentine’s Superstar Spectacular on Friday, Feb. 12, at 8 p.m. Patti LaBelle is what is known as a “triple-threat.” She is an R&B and soul singer, a songwriter and an actress. She has fronted two groups, Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, and later Labelle, which had the hit song “Lady Marmalade.” LaBelle moved on to a solo career in the ‘80s, hitting number one on the U.S. charts with the Michael McDonald duet “On My Own.” In the mid ‘80s, she recorded the songs “New Attitude” and “Stir It Up” for the hit movie “Beverly Hills Cop.” Both songs soared up the pop charts.

Patti has been nominated for 13 Grammy Awards and has taken home two. In 2003, the song “Lady Marmalade” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. She has also been nominated a number of times for the NAACP Image Awards, winning twice, and has won an American Music Award for Favorite Rhythm and Blues/Soul ArtistFemale in 1992. In 2001, Patti LaBelle was honored with the “Lena Horne Lifetime Achievement Award” at the Lady of Soul Awards. As an actress, LaBelle starred as Dwayne Wayne’s mother, Adele Wayne, in several episodes of the NBC sitcom “A Different World.” She starred with Al Green on Broadway in the revival play “Your Arm’s Too Short to Box with God,” which she also performed in the

televised version that aired on PBS. In 1992, LaBelle starred in her own sitcom, “Out All Night,” where she played a club owner and former R&B star named Chelsea Paige. It lasted for 19 episodes, being cancelled in 1993. LaBelle has since released a number other albums, including “When a Woman Loves,” “Timeless Journey,” and the gospel album “The Gospel According to Patti LaBelle,” which hit number one on the Gospel chart. The O’Jays are living legends, being a trio consisting of founders Eddie Levert Sr. and Walter Williams Sr, and newest member Eric Noland Grant, who joined the group in 1995. Whether performing in America or on international soil, The O’Jays always let it all out, playing to standing room only audiences.

Patti LaBelle, above, and The O’Jays at left On the road several moths during the year, The O’Jays still enjoy the accolades and rave reviews of fans and media. All generations love The O’Jays, which is why their “For The Love” album, which was released in 2001, was a chart topper, and in 2002, that album was nominated for a Grammy Award. In addition to their many awards from various shows and organizations for the past 43 years, The O’Jays continue to receive many awards from various shows and organizations, while still making guest appearances. The O’Jays also embarked on acting careers in September, 2003, when they appeared with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Beyonce Knowles in “The Fighting Temptations.”

In 2005, The O’Jays were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in Sharon, Pa. In 2009, they were awarded BET’s “Lifetime Achievement Award.” Fox Concerts will present the Valentine’s Superstar Spectacular, starring Patti LaBelle and The O’Jays, at the Fabulous Fox Theatre on Friday, Feb. 12, at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and are $65, $60, $55, and $45, with a limited number of Gold Circle seats available. All prices are subject to change. Tickets can be purchased at the Fox Theatre box office and all MetroTix locations. Charge by phone at 314-534-1111 or visit www. metrotix.com..

Music Tuning in Carpe Diem String Quartet, Peter Soave to appear at SIUE The Carpe Diem String Quartet, whose recent CD was selected for the 2009 Grammy Award Entry List, and internationally acclaimed bandoneón and concert accordionist Peter Soave will perform the music of the late Aldemaro Romero at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, as part of the Arts & Issues series at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. “Aldemaro Romero Sr. was an international recording star with RCA Victor and one of the foremost Latin music orchestra leaders in the world,” said Grant Andree, coordinator of the Arts & Issues series. “We are proud to have his son here to introduce the Arts & Issues audience to the important legacy his father left to the international world of music.” The composer ’s son, Aldemaro Romero Jr., is dean of SIUE’s College of Arts and Sciences and will be conducting during the Jan. 30 concert on stage at the theater in SIUE’s Dunham Hall. “And, we’re pleased that the fine musicians of the Carpe Diem Quintet and Peter Soave himself will grace our stage to help Dean Romero in this important musical presentation,” Andree said. “This should be an entertaining as well as enlightening evening for our audience.” The elder Romero’s reputation as a fine arranger-conductor led him to collaborate with popular orchestras and singers such as Dean Martin, big band bandleader Stan Kenton and popular Latin percussionist Tito Puente. Romero was credited with creating a new form of Venezuelan music, known as Onda Nueva (New Wave) that was influenced by Brazilian Bossa Nova rhythms. He also composed Five Paleontological Mysteries for accordion and string quartet that will be performed that evening by Carpe Diem and Soave, and will be conducted by the composer’s son. The piece, by the way, was dedicated to Soave and named in honor of Dean Romero, who, in his work as a research biologist, discovered the five new fossils. Carpe Diem, in residence at Ohio Wesleyan University, is a musical group that has captured the imagination of audiences around the world, earning critical acclaim with its electrifying performances. Committed to revitalizing the chamber music concert experience, Carpe Diem is using innovative programming, thematic concerts and popular music for younger generations, cameras and video to assist in the visual presentation, as well as speaking from the stage to better engage the audience. The quartet continues its project of

recording the nine string quartets of Sergey Taneyev on the Naxos label, selected for the aforementioned 51st Grammy Awards Entry List this past year in four categories—best classical album, best chamber music performance, best new artist, and best engineered album–classical. The hallmark of Peter Soave’s performances is the excitement he generates on stage with his execution and sensitivity of touch while playing the bandoneón or the accordian. A native of Detroit, Soave was a young phenomenon on the international competition circuit by the age of 16. He is the only player to win a gold medal in all four major world championship accordion competitions. Deeply inspired by the A rg e n t i n e a n c o m p o s e r A s t o r Piazolla, Soave began including the characteristic bandoneón (also known as the tango accordion) in his performances as well, and now regularly performs on both instruments. He has recorded several CDs, both as a solo artist and with orchestra. He received the 2001 Detroit Music Award for best classical recording and in 2003 the Detroit Music Award for best

classical instrumentation. Tickets for Carpe Diem Quartet and Peter Soave are $27; SIUE students, $13; SIUE employees and retirees, as well as all senior citizens, $25. QuickGlance Movie Reviews

“It’s Complicated”

Writer-director Nancy Meyers’ latest relationship comedy isn’t what the name promises at all. It’s simple, almost as simple about grown-up romance and heartache as the average Hollywood teen comedy is about youthful love and sex. That said, a simple-minded story can benefit enormously with Meryl Streep on screen for almost an entire movie. Streep is charming as a divorced woman in an affair with her remarried ex-husband (Alec Baldwin) and a flirtation with a new man (Steve Martin). Too bad Streep puts on this nice show for such a superficial story, and for that matter, too bad for Baldwin, Martin and the rest of an earnest supporting cast led by John Krasinski. Meyers serves up fluff as light as the pastries Streep’s character bakes for a living, a story to make divorced people wish their broken marriages and the ugly aftermath could be as fun and frolicsome as this. RATED: R for some drug content and sexuality. RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“Avatar”

James Cameron’s 3-D epic has all the smack of a Film Not To Miss — a movie whose effects are clearly revolutionary, a spectacle that millions will find adventure in. But it nevertheless feels unsatisfying and somehow lacks the pulse of a truly alive film. The plot is a little like the American frontier circa the 1800s, only transposed to the year 2154 on the faraway moon Pandora, the home of Native Americanlike, aqua blue, 10-foot tall creatures called the Na’vi. Arriving are imperialistic humans to plunder, and scientists to study. Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) leads a team that explores in Na’vi bodies, avatars, controlled remotely. A sense of discovery — of Cameron’s digital world of Pandora, of the impressive techno-filmmaking — makes “Avatar” often thrilling. The environmentalist and anti-war messages resonate with contemporary troubles, but they also seem odd coming from such a swaggering behemoth of a movie. One senses Cameron’s zest lies in the battle, not in peace. With Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana. RATED: PG-13 for intense epic battle sequences and warfare, sensuality, language and some smoking. RUNNING TIME: 161 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and half stars out of four.

“The Book of Eli”

In the future, according to “The Book of Eli,” we’ll all dress like we’re in a Nine Inch Nails video. A meteorite and a subsequent war 30 years earlier has scorched the earth and the population, who outfit themselves in goggles and leather. Across this charred land strides our Christian cowboy, Eli (Denzel Washington), a mysterious, solitary man who carries the last remaining Bible in his backpack, along with a knife and a shotgun. Eli is a prophet carrying The Word, and “The Book of Eli” suggests mankind will be saved by it. The Christian theme notwithstanding, “The Book of Eli” is really only a sepia-colored, shoot-’em-up Western. The Hughes brothers (“Menace II Society”) let nary a bullet or arrow fly without sending their cameras behind to track it in slowmotion. Washington and Gary Oldman (as a frustrated dictator trying to steal the Bible) create sparks and help drive the film forward. With Mila Kunis in post-apocalyptic chic and Tom Waits as a paranoid shopkeeper. RATED: R for some brutal violence and language. RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“Fish Tank”

Writer-director Andrea Arnold has created something so real and raw with this British teen drama, you may come away with a twinge of guilty voyeurism, a sense of peering too closely and impolitely into other people’s lives. Arnold made a remarkable find with her teen lead, Katie Jarvis, who had not acted before but proves a natural, at least for the sort of honest intensity needed to anchor the story. Jarvis plays Mia, a 15year-old alienated from friends, her mom (Kierston Wareing) and everything else around her bleak home in a crumbling industrial town east of London. Her mother’s new boyfriend (Michael Fassbender) becomes both someone new to confront and an intriguing mix of father figure and dream suitor to Mia. Extreme things happen, yet it all feels genuine, even inevitable, thanks to the devoted, fearless cast and Arnold’s attention to detail, which helps the film unfold like actual lives playing out on screen. RATED: Unrated, but contains scenes of sexuality, sex involving a minor and teen drinking and smoking. RUNNING TIME: 122 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

“44 Inch Chest”

Profane, irreverent bluster by five loud men might carry a choice scene, but it cannot carry an entire movie. The makers of this British drama needn’t have bothered trying without the supremely talented crew they rounded up. Ray Winstone, Ian McShane, John Hurt, Tom Wilkinson and Stephen Dillane manage to make a passable time out of this densely packed but ultimately slight exercise in extreme manliness. Reuniting with “Sexy Beast” writers Louis Mellis and David Scinto, Winstone stars as a manly man reduced to heartsick puppy after his wife (Joanne Whalley) says she’s met someone else. McShane, Hurt, Wilkinson and Dillane play Winstone’s buddies, who step in with bad intent toward their pal’s rival. Throw these five guys in a room to cuss and bellow — and that’s mainly all first-time director Malcolm Venville does — and some sparks will fly. Despite the dark story, it’s fitfully fun to watch the actors trade turns as alpha male of the moment. RATED: R for pervasive strong language including sexual references, and some violence. RUNNING TIME: 94 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

“The Spy Next Door”

Jackie Chan. Boring pen salesman. But really an ace CIA agent who’s retiring from the spy game to marry the single mom (Amber Valletta) next door. Only her kids (Madeline Carroll, Will Shadley and Alina Foley) can’t stand him because they think he’s a boring pen salesman. So she goes away and he volunteers to baby-sit to win over the little ones. Except these Russian spies come after him and the children ... You buying any of this? Neither are we. Like many action stars, Chan is looking for a piece of the lucrative family market. He’ll need to keep looking after this latest from director Brian Levant, who specializes in awful family fare (“Jingle All the Way,” “Are We There Yet?”). This sad little movie is built entirely to set up Chan’s stunt and fight sequences, the action more tolerable than the movie’s lame jokes, but barely. With Billy Ray Cyrus and George Lopez. RATED: PG for sequences of action violence and some mild rude humor. RUNNING TIME: 94 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

Stars help carry “Leap Year” By DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press The romantic-comedy “Leap Year” gets by, barely, on the charms of its stars and the beauty of its Irish scenery. Amy Adams and Matthew Goode aren’t particularly convincing during the loathing portion of their on-screen couple’s love-hate relationship, but when the ice thaws, they bring a tender depth of feeling to the oh-so-ordinary material. There’s half a watchable movie here and, as luck would have it, you have to sit through a good 45 minutes of creaky contrivances to get to the good stuff. The set-up has control-freak Anna (Adams) freaking out herself when her pink-tie-wearing, cardiologist boyfriend of four years, Jeremy (Adam Scott), gives her diamond earrings instead of an expected engagement ring. When the helmet-haired Jeremy goes to Dublin for a cardiology convention, Anna books a ticket to Ireland, intent on using a folksy, Emerald Isle leap-year custom that gives women carte blanche to pop the question. Yes, underneath all the order and precision, Anna is an incurable romantic. Bad weather diverts Anna’s plane to Wales. There she hops a boat and lands in Western Ireland, specifically in the town of Dingle, though there is scant evidence of the charming Dingle in the movie. (Catch the Robert Mitchum movie, “Ryan’s Daughter,” for the real deal.) What we do see is one lonely pub, which also functions as the hotel

Associated Press

In this photo released by Universal Pictures, Amy Adams and Matthew Goode, right, are shown in a scene from, “Leap Year.” and taxi hub. There Anna meets scruffy charmer Declan (Goode), and she hires him to drive her to Dublin in time for Leap Day. Now, it’s about 220 miles from Dingle to Dublin, but somehow our couple’s journey stretches to three days — enough time for them to drop their guard and fall hopelessly in love. First, though, Anna has to see past Declan’s rudeness, and he needs to look beyond her penchant for control. One night in a bed-and-

breakfast, where they’re forced to act as a married couple in order to get a room, works wonders in settling both these issues. There’s not one surprising moment in the script, but Adams and Goode allow you to look past the familiar and develop a rooting interest in them as a couple. Adams isn’t particularly endearing (or convincing) playing prissy. But she’s got sincerity in spades as well as the ability to dive headfirst into impulse

moments after displaying the huggable sensitivity we first saw in “Junebug.” As for Goode, it seems ridiculous that, after excellent work in “Match Point,” “Brideshead Revisited” and, most recently, as Colin Firth’s lover in “A Single Man,” it will be a silly movie like “Leap Year” that makes him a star. So be it. Director Anand Tucker (“Shopgirl”) gets more mileage from Goode’s reaction shots than he does all the wacky scenes featuring

road-blocking cows and high-flying, high-heeled shoes. And Tucker knows what he has in Ireland, too, presenting the rugged beauty of the bogs, lakes and mountains of Connemara in western Ireland in an unadorned way, knowing the area needs no embellishment. OK, the sunset finale at the Cliffs of Moher is a little over-the-top, but by that point you don’t care — because you actually care. That’s the surprise of “Leap Year.”

“The Lovely Bones” less than lovely By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge Alice Sebold’s remarkable 2002 novel “The Lovely Bones” is truly a work of great accomplishment that puts such a tragic event--the loss of a child--into perspective for every reader fortunate enough to never have experienced such a horrific tragedy themselves. She writes, beautifully, from the perspective of Susie Salmon, a fourteen year-old girl from Pennsylvania who is assaulted and murdered savagely by a neighbor on a cold autumn night in 1973. The vast majority of the novel takes place after Susie has died and as she watches (from Heaven) the lives of her family still fighting through grief here on Earth. It is emotionally powerful and something I am disappointed in not having read sooner than last week. More than seven years ago, soon after the initial success of The Lord of the Rings made him a household name, director Peter Jackson was hired to write and direct the picture. It was a long wait for him to get here, and his movie is definitely worth a look, but it lacks most of the sucker-punch strength that the novel hits you

January 28, 2010

“The Lovely Bones” RATED: PG-13 for mature thematic material involving disturbing violent content and images, and some language. RUNNING TIME: 173 minutes. ROBERT’S RANKING: two and a half stars out of four. with at every new chapter. Expectedly, Jackson preferred to focus his vision on the noteworthy visual style that the book left readers to fill in with their own imaginations. Susie’s version of Heaven is colorful, exciting, and full of strange sights that would be impossible to achieve without the telltale visual effects that Jackson is so well known for. Animals, weather, geometric objects, and a bizarre transition into world where the rules of physics do not apply make for an afterlife that many would find most comforting. As Susie (Atonement’s Saorise Ronan, cast perfectly) make her way home at dusk, she is lured into a cornfield by George Harvey

(Stanley Tucci), a neighbor she knows, but not very well. He preys on this ignorant trust and steals away her life in a painless sequence (at least in the movie) where none of the gory, cruel attack is shown. This change was one made purely to keep a PG-13 rating and to please audiences who cringe at such on-screen depiction. I, oddly, found it a mistake to do so. As her soul runs from under the ground through the world and into an area her toddler brother (Christian Thomas Ashdale) would call the “In-Between”, Susie feels no fear or pain any longer. She experiences bliss, tainted only by her longing to be back with her family. The movie is about grief and it’s handled differently by those she’s closest to. Her sister, Lindsay (Rose McIver), resolves to fight death by using her life in the spirit Susie couldn’t. She excels in sports and at her education. She opens her heart to love and charity and to justice as she helps gather evidence against the monstrous George Harvey. She ages gracefully into a well-rounded adult all would be proud to know. Jack (Mark Wahlberg), Susie’s father, grows into an old man quickly. He leaves behind the fun and whimsy that

he used as a young parent, choosing instead to become obsessed with Susie’s case and the one police officer (Michael Imperioli) who stays loyal to the soon hopeless investigation. Jack shuts out almost everything else, save keeping his other children safely close to him. When Abigail (Rachel Weisz) leaves her husband and children behind, the grief is at its worst. Could anyone be pained more by losing a child that a mother? Her exit opens the door to Grandma Lynn (Susan Sarandon), a sympathetic and funny character, who falls flat on the big screen compared to the touching air she lends to the book’s final summation. An excellent novel, pared of its omniscient narration, doesn’t score a major win. That’s a chronic shame in almost all cases. Here, however, is one bright side to take away. Stanley Tucci is so outrageously wicked as the closeted serial killer, creepy and aloof in his sinister ways, that it really made me take note. He was so against the affable type he played in “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Julie & Julia” that it would not surprise me at all to see his name called when Oscar nominations are announced on February 2nd. Has his acting always been this good?

If you’re a painter or sketcher looking for a new medium, experience Pastels Workshop and discover that creating with pastels is fun, versatile and stimulating. Enjoy Chinese Brush Painting and learn a variety of brush techniques through painting the “four gentlemen” – traditional Chinese flowers: plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum. Curious about what red, white and dry rosé wines pair well with different kinds of barbeques? Enroll in “Memorial Day BBQ Wines” and learn how to treat your guest to wines for the holiday weekend.

Just in time for the farmers market season, weave a functional “Market Basket,” featuring a filled bottom and swing handle. If you’re the crafty kind, learn mosaic techniques that have been in practice for centuries in “Mosaic Mirror.” Bring native songbirds into your garden by making a “Gourd Birdhouse” or start a new tradition at your home and learn to serve “Dim Sum.” Beginner gardeners enjoy “Country Flower Arranging” and learn some easy-to-grow perennials and annuals that are perfect for a cutting garden you can enjoy throughout the season. “Make Your Own Topiary” or learn the “Organic Vegetable Basics.” Get acquainted with the Victorian

style of gardens and explore “Behind the Scenes: Victorian Garden” and tour the Victorian style garden just east of Tower Grove House at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Enjoy Missouri native plants in their splendor with a “Garden with Natives Walk,” a walking tour highlighting plants that grow best in our St. Louis region. Understanding the pH of Soils will teach you all about the affects of pH and how to adjust your pH for your plants to thrive. “Indoor Bonsai” provides basic principles in this handson workshop on bonsai. “Explore Hazardous Plants,” a course that focuses on some common plants found in the garden that have some nasty side-effects. Learn about “Sustainable

Gardening Basics” in this three part class introducing you to gardening with sustainability in mind. Explore the “History of Courtesy Missouri Botanical GardenCoffee” and learn about the varieties of coffee and how what you choose to eat and drink can make a difference. Family Focus Kangaroo care helps mother of preemie By RASHA MADKOUR Associated Press MIAMI (AP) — I never imagined I’d spend my first weeks as a mother pretending to be a marsupial. But there I was, a month and a half before my due date, sitting in the neonatal intermediate care unit and hoping that a practice known as “kangaroo care” would help my preemie. Every morning I’d put my 4pound, 6-ounce son under my pouch-like sweater so that we were skin to skin, chest to chest, my body acting as a natural heat source instead of his incubator — with the added benefits of a human touch, soothing heart beat and familiar smell. It didn’t start out this way. The first time I “visited” my baby in the unit, I was so excited that I got to hold him in my arms for more than a few minutes, which had been all the time we’d had together before then. That feeling very quickly turned into intense guilt when I went back later and a nurse told me his temperature had dipped a bit because of how long we had him out of his incubator. I didn’t hold him for the rest of the day and felt discouraged from doing so the day after, too. I knew I wanted to hold him — and felt I should — but I also didn’t want to do any harm. Then I heard about kangaroo care. Finally, after days struggling to figure out how to handle this tiny baby who’d surprised me by coming early, I’d found a way to be useful. ••• The benefits of kangaroo care were d iscovered accidentally. In Bogota, Colombia, in the late 1970s, doctors were grappling with a shortage of incubators,

an overstretched staff and a high mortality rate. They decided to get help from mothers, who were instructed to keep their babies warm by holding them skinto-skin and to feed them breast milk. The babies were found to be thriving in this new setup, and the practice has since spread across the globe. In 2003, the World Health Organization published a guide on it. Studies have shown the closeness helps preemies sleep better, breathe better, and regulate their body temperature and heart rate better. All of this allows them to devote more energy to growing. “Kangaroo care, to me, is the first gift you can give to your baby in the NICU and it’s one of the greatest gifts the staff can give to parents in the NICU,” says Liza Cooper, the national director of a March of Dimes program that supports families in neonatal intensive care units and promotes the practice among healthcare workers. I first came across kangaroo care in a book about premature babies that I bought the day after I was discharged. It seemed like a good way to bond if nothing else — and a more appealing way to spend my time in the hospital. Sitting next to a plastic box with your kid inside isn’t much fun. Kangarooing, on the other hand, turned out to be quite lovely. I loved feeling his scrawny body wriggling to get comfy, then the rise and fall of his steady breathing. I felt something tickling me once and realized his hand had made its way under my arm. I would talk to him, read comforting verses from the Quran and sing the few lullabies whose words I could remember. The staff at Jackson Memorial

Hospital were accommodating, and by mid-week, as word of the “kangaroo mom” spread in the unit, a nurse pointed me to some foldable recliners hiding in a nook that were donated by a doctor who wanted to support kangaroo care. Big improvement on the metal and plastic chairs we’d previously occupied. Thus began our truly marathon cuddling sessions — a few hours in the morning, then a few in the evening. Other hospitals are more proactive in telling parents about kangaroo care and encouraging them to do it. At Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, the practice is described in the NICU parent handbook and staffers talk to families about it as one of the ways they can help care for their baby, along with the more typical duties of changing diapers and giving baths.

breathing tube, for example. And Dulkerian emphasizes that it’s just one of the ways parents can help their child get better and that those who don’t kangaroo shouldn’t feel guilty. “Ultimately you’re going to get that bonding and that closeness,” Dulkerian says. “Even just being there, babies know.” I’ve learned quickly that no single parenting choice will make or break a child’s development, and kangaroo care is no exception. But I’m glad to have had it as a comforting experience during an uncertain and scary time. And if it helped my baby relax and pack on the pounds, all the better. I can’t even imagine kangarooing with my little guy now; he’s so energetic and squirrely I’ve taken to calling him McSquirmy. But that’s just as I had hoped for.

“It’s wonderful in terms of moms and dads being able to get as close as you can to your hospitalized babe,” says Dr. Susan Dulkerian, the medical director at Mercy’s NICU. “Babies snuggle in and get comfortable and calm down and seem very, very content.” ••• By and large, neonatologists recognize the benefits of kangaroo care, says Dr. Jonathan Fanaroff, a s s o c i a t e m e d i c a l d i re c t o r o f the NICU at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in Cleveland. “I think where the questions still lie is not to overstate the benefits — ’If you don’t do kangaroo care, your kid won’t go to Harvard’ — and to make sure it’s safe.” There’s room for debate on when a premature baby is stable enough to be held — some doctors draw the line when the baby’s on a

Travel The Elms Resort and Spa Get away from it all in Excelsior, Mo. By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge The Elms Resort and Spa is located about 30 minutes from Kansas City, Mo., in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Although steeped in a long history, The Elms provides a complete package stay that would allow you to never leave the facility if you wish. The story of The Elms began with the discovery of healing mineral waters in Excelsior Springs in the 1880s. Once the rest of the country heard of the springs and their medicinal properties, thousands visited the sleepy little valley to partake of them. They pitched tents and built boarding houses as the springs were marketed as a health resort. Soon, the first and grandest of hotels was built. This grand hotel enchanted all visitors with its combination of elegance and warmth. Guests could soak in mineral water baths or soak up the sun in the lush gardens. There were exquisite parties and grand balls. Eventually The Elms, along with the springs, became one of the most desired destinations in the country. After two devastating fires, The Elms opened again on Sept. 7, 1912 with the third and current hotel. The building is constructed of native limestone and boasts grand ballrooms and beautiful verandas. Transforming over the years to meet the social and economic

January 28, 2010

needs of the public, The Elms has withstood the test of times, even after being considered for a conversion into a sanitarium right before the Great Depression. Although the history documents bankruptcy and some new ownership over the years, the grand hotel still is one of the most luxurious around. Over the years, the Elms has been said to be host to several spirits. The origin of these ghosts have been the source of many a ‘spirited’ discussion. While the hotel had seen two devastating fires, no fatalities had occurred. Rumors have persisted that one of the spirits was involved in one of the fires. The lap pool area supposedly entertains the spirit of a gambler involved with illegal activities during the speakeasy days of Prohibition. The housekeeping staff has a spiritual adviser in the form of a ghost wearing a 1920s style uniform. One thing everyone seems to agree on is the friendliness of the spirits. These gracious ghosts may act as spiritual guides to the next adventures that await the grand hotel. The Elms Resort and Spa offers

accommodations to suit every need. Standard rooms are described as “tastefully appointed premium rooms, combine antique charm with modern conveniences.” Deluxe rooms are described as “spacious accommodations combining historic charm with modern conveniences and a lovely view.” Standard Suites are described as “welcoming suites combine a spacious sitting room with the bedroom and bath. The Capone Suite is the most noted standard suite.” Club level suites are described as “standard suites on the fifth floor club level. Staying in these suites entitles visitors to an evening cocktail reception and breakfast the next day.” Jacuzzi suites “feature king sized bed and an inviting Jacuzzi tub built for two.” Bridal suites offer “gracious dining and sitting areas combined with a king bed, Jacuzzi tub built for two and a romantic bay window overlooking the pool area and grounds. This is an absolute must for the romantics” Presidential suites “same amenities as the bridal suite and even more spacious charm. The Historic Presidential Suites are some of the most popular.” The Elms Resort and Spa offers a true escape from everyday stress,

offering different and distinct amenities. The resort offers an award-winning spa with a large menu of relaxing spa treatments. The spa is 10,000 square foot. Dining Delights

Is it a fruit or vegetable? The amazing artichoke is neither By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Artichokes are a strange food. I wanted to find out if they were a fruit or a vegetable, but was surprised to find out that it is neither. It is actually the edible bud of a flower. Imagine that! According to my favorite information source, Wikipedia, “The Globe Artichoke” is a perennial thistle, originating in southern Europe around the Mediterranean. It grows to 1.5 to 2 m tall, with arching, deeply lobed, silvery glaucousgreen leaves, 50 to 82 cm long. The flowers develop in a large head from an edible bud, about 8 to 15 cm diameter with numerous triangular scales; the individual florets are purple. The edible portion of the buds consists primarily of the fleshy lower portions of the involucral bracts and the base, known as the heart; the mass of immature florets in the center of the bud is called the choke. These are inedible in older larger flowers.” Well, now you know! I have always enjoyed a good marinated artichoke in a salad, or the hot artichoke dips that some restaurants serve. But, I have never branched out to learn about the

artichoke or to try to further my culinary repertoire of artichoke recipes. Ocean Mist Farms, a family owned farm whose largest crop is artichokes, is comprised of thirdand fourth-generation growers. Since 1924, they have been growing artichokes and other vegetables that are safe, nutritious and wholesome. The farm is located in Castroville, Calif., which until 1995, was the artichoke capital of the world. It is still home to the annual “Castroville Artichoke Festival.” Ocean Mist is still the largest grower of fresh artichokes in the United States and grows them year round. O c e a n M i s t F a r m s re c e n t l y announced that it is going green by making its new soup and salad recipe cookbooks available digitally online. The new cookbooks, available now, are the most recent in a series the company is publishing digitally. “We put a lot of effort into creating cooking videos and digital cookbooks to enhance the experience of visitors to our Web site and give them more than what they were expecting with a traditional recipe search online,” said Kori Tuggle, company marketing manager. “From the traffic trends we discover online, we modify our site content to cater to what consumers are looking for.” Ocean Mist receives a monthly average of 30,000 unique visitors a month to its Web site, with over 50 percent of the visitors coming to the site specifically for artichoke recipes based on the volume of Web site pages viewed. In 2009, the company had more than 70,000 recipe views. “We know people use the Internet for recipes and we want to be their source of information for cooking vegetables – and fresh artichokes in particular,” Tuggle said. “We’re using all forms of digital communication, from our Web site to social media, to help make cooking artichokes easier and more fun.” Here are some sample recipes that you can find in their online cookbooks, which you can print out with full color photos. There is also a complete guide at the beginning of each book that shows you how to prepare a fresh artichoke. Artichoke Caprese Salad 2 cooked “Ocean Mist” artichokes

(you may use any fresh artichoke, cook according to the “How to Prepare and Cook” section of the cookbook. 2 large ripe tomatoes-cut into eight slices 8 slices of fresh mozzerella cheese 8 large fresh basil leaves balsamic vinegar to taste olive oil to taste salt and pepper to taste On a large serving plate, place alternating slices of tomato, cheese, basil leaf and artichoke, so each one overlaps the other. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and drizzle balsamic vinegar and olive oil over salad. Suggested: Serve with warm crusty bread. Chunky Artichoke and Vegetable Soup “You will never make vegetable soup without artichokes again!” 4 cooked, cooled and cubed Ocean Mist Artichoke heart, bottoms and stems (see “How to Prepare and Cook” section of cookbook) (Any fresh artichoke will work) 2 tablespoons olive oil 4 carrots, chopped 4 celery stalks, chopped 1 yellow onion, chopped

4 small white potatoes, peeled and cubed 1 tablespoon garlic salt 1 tablespoon salt free garlic and herb seasoning 1 tablespoon dried herbs of provence 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley 1 whole roasted chicken, boned and cubed 1 can (49 1/2 ounces) of chicken broth 4 cups of artichoke broth (water that artichokes were cooked in) fresh ground pepper to taste In a large soup pot, add olive oil and saute carrots, celery and onions over medium-high heat. Once vegetable are tender, add potatoes, garlic salt, herb seasoning, herbs of provence, parsley, chicken broth and artichoke broth. Bring to a simmer and cook until potatoes are fork tender. Once potatoes are tender, add chicken, artichokes and pepper to taste. Continue to heat soup until hot and serve. Dining Delights OK, we admit these are our opinions and you certainly should form your own, but it is nice to have a guide of places to eat when you are undecided or want to try something new or different. To send us a suggestion of a restaurant to try, e-mail theedge@ edwpub.net Falcon Diner Ameristar Casino-St. Charles 4 stars This top notch diner serves more than typical diner fare and you will not leave hungry. With their “Happy Days” decor and a breakfast, lunch and dinner menue that includes a one pound chicken fried steak and burgers made to order, you will have to ask for a doggy bag. Their bakery counter is so popular, they had to give it a place of its own outside the diner so passers by can enjoy the magic also. Bartolino’s Osteria St. Louis 5 stars Italian cuisine at its best. Elegant dining with a decor reminiscent of the glamours ‘40s. Most of the traditional Italian dishes but additional gourmet Italian fare that is fantastic to the pallet. The Linguine Pinoli, includes shrimp, mushrooms, spinach, pine nuts, lemon butter and garlic, is a tasty combination over fresh linguine. The bread is fresh and wonderful. A little pricier than a family restaurant, but well worth the price for a nice date night or special night out. Boat House Restaurant Forest Park, St. Louis 3 1/2 stars A fun place to dine, whether you are out on a nice spring afternoon or want a great place to eat before a Muny show. Serving brunch ever Sunday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; lunch everyday, dinner Tues. - Sun. starting at 3 p.m. Choose from an array of signature sandwiches, pizzas, appetizers, salads, and more. There is a kids menu and you can pull up the pooch to the table, inside or outside, as they are pet friendly. Jump in a paddle boat and take a cruise to work off the good food. Best Steak House St. Louis St. Louis 1 star Maybe it is the price (very cheap), maybe it is “shouting out” your order, maybe it is just the ambiance of the noisy, a bit chaotic atmosphere that draws people to Best Steak House, but some of those reasons are exactly why I wouldn’t return. Not to mention the poor quality of “steak” they serve. Many people love it, so try it for yourself. Right across from the Fox Theatre.

Bandana’s Barbecue Collinsville 4 stars Bandana’s is one our family favorites. Excellent food, excellent prices, great service. Their smoked meats have a great smoky flavor and are so tender. The sauce choices are the best. You have the choice of two sides, but I love their cole slaw. Their garlic toast is fabulous! Come hungry, loosen the belt on the way out. Ruby Tuesdays 2 1/2 stars Collinsville/Fairview Heights Another sports bar themed restaurant with all the memorabilia on the walls, but a good place to eat. The prices are a little higher than a typical family restaurant. Service is normally pretty good. The Buffalo Burger is a great choice and their salad bar is very fresh and clean. Red Robin Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars The bottomless french fries are fantastic, but it basically is a pricey burger place. Service is not super speedy, but food was good and hot. Good group setting.

Red Apple Maryville 4 stars The Red Apple is another favorite of our family, whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner. There is a huge menu selection, including Italian, Broasted chicken, gyros, sandwiches of all kinds, plate specials, fish selections-fried and broiled, and much more. Service is always impeccable and prices can’t be beat. La Fonda Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars Good food, good service. All you can eat chips and salsa are are great complement to their abundant menu. Their rice and beans are excellent also. Bigelo’s Bistro Edwardsville 3 stars Great menu selection of gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads, pastas and more. Great downtown Edwardsville location where you are sure to see someone you know.

The food is five stars, but the prices are three stars, so let’s split the difference. Excellent fare, great wine and brew choices and nice ambiance. Chef Kevin Wilmmann is sure to create a culinary masterpiece that you won’t forget! Wang Gang Edwardsville 4 stars Fresh Asian cuisine. Not your typical “Chinese” restaurant. Some familiar dishes and appetizers fixed a different way. Lettuce Wrapsfantastic. Prices are middle of the road. St. Louis Bread Company Edwardsville/Collinsville 4 1/2 Stars Okay men, don’t scoff at the rating, but embrace it! Although men look at it as “chick food,” t h e re i s s o m e t h i n g f o r e v e r y taste on their menu. Fantastic soups, sandwiches, bakery items,

coffees, teas, salads, and more. Great place to take a laptop or a book and just kick back and sip a cup of java. Bully’s Smokehouse Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars The food is good at Bully’s, but a little foo-foo for a barbecue place. The prices are a little more than typical barbecue fare. Good for business lunch or dinner and nice servings. Pantera’s Pizza Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars Still some of the best pizza around, but the decor needs a bit of updating, along with the dinner ware. The buffet is good if they keep it full, but that can be an issue at times. You better put on your running shoes to get that hot selection before everyone else beats you to it!

Erato on Main Edwardsville 4 stars

Dining Delights At the Cambridge Clubhouse, it's dining in the raw COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Inside the Cambridge Clubhouse, food is the main topic of conversation. It’s Sunday night, and it’s time to eat. Everyone but newcomers has brought a dish to share. They are happily eating and begging to copy recipes for tomato and macadamia mozzarella linguine, a carrot salad, even pumpkin pie. By the end of the evening, Glenda Nickell has managed to snag a great recipe for cranberry sauce that does not require it to be cooked above 115 degrees. Nickell, 57, is a member of the Columbia Raw Food Group, which meets monthly in the clubhouse on Scarborough Drive. She went fully “raw” a few weeks ago, but she says she has been toying with varying levels of healthy eating for years now. While working as a nurse in Florida, Nickell also spent time at a vegan resort and was introduced to the benefits of eating uncooked, unprocessed and often organic foods. About 20 members of Columbia’s raw food group meet monthly for a potluck to talk about recipes and the latest health studies. Some have been eating raw for months or years, some are new to the idea and others tag along with friends. Here, “the standard American diet” is a dirty phrase. Raw foodists eat fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, sprouts and herbs. Some include a few processed items such as coldpressed olive oils, raw nut butters, fermented foods, pure maple syrup and a type of raw soy sauce called nama shoyu. Nothing is cooked above 115 degrees. The trend has been steadily growing in the United States over the past few years. Followers believe that cooking food breaks down its enzymes and nutrients. They say eating a raw diet promotes weight loss, more energy, clear skin and improved overall health. “ I n m y o p i n i o n , t h e g re a t experiment of ‘let’s-use-chemicalsto-make-food’ failed, and we’re going to have to come back,” Nickell says. “We’re going to have to move backward to reclaim our health.” In 2001, she married Dave Williams, who was also an ordinary American eater. That diet changed when “we began falling apart,” Nickell says. She was taking medication for fibromyalgia and high cholesterol, and his chronic back problems worsened to the point that he was worried about his job at Boone County Lumber. “If you’d have told him back then that he’d be eating like this now, there is no way he could believe it,” Nickell says. A few years ago, a doctor recommended the book “Eat to Live” by Joel Fuhrman. Mostly

January 28, 2010

vegan, and somewhat raw, his diet weighs the number of calories in a piece of food versus the nutrients it contains. Fuhrman judges food by a simple formula: health equals nutrients/calories. The higher the final number, the better the food is, Fuhrman wrote. One of the pillars of the diet is

that the body has the power to heal itself with the proper nutrition. Williams and Nickell say they went on and off the diet until five months ago, when they fully committed to the regimen. He says he no longer needs his pain medication, and she has stopped both of her prescriptions.

They say they have more energy and think more clearly. Catherine A. Peterson, associate professor of nutrition at MU, recommends a diet full of fruits and vegetables, but she has reservations about a strict raw diet. Peterson suggests that many of the health benefits cited can be

traced to becoming more conscious about food. Eating more produce cooked or uncooked, as well as cutting back on processed grains can have significant effect alone, she says. She warns that limiting a diet to raw food might cause serious side effects.

Television Teams set for "The Amazing Race" LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jet and Cord McCoy, a pair of bull-riding brothers from Tupelo, Okla., are among the 11 teams competing on the upcoming 16th edition of CBS’s “The Amazing Race.” Other teams competing this season include a grandmother and granddaughter, a father and daughter, married highschool sweethearts, and a couple of attorney moms. Jet, 30, and Cord, 29, who have both competed on the International Professional Rodeo Association circuit, said they were not daunted by their competition for the $1 million grand prize on the reality show premiering Feb. 14 (8 p.m. EST). “We ride bucking bulls and horses,” said Jet. “If we’re gonna be intimidated, it’s not by another team.” “I can ride a horse as fast as they can go,” said Cord. The biggest hurdle facing Louis Stravato, 47, and Michael Naylor, 45, at the beginning of the race was their backpacks. After seeing the behemoth bags carried by the Harlem Globtrotters last season, the longtime buddies and narcotics detectives from Providence, R.I., chose not to pack lightly. They ended up ditching clothes along the way. “We are the two biggest idiots,” said Stravato. “Before the race, we kept telling ourselves that the cameramen were going to have to check their stuff, so we would be able to check our giant 90-liter bags while we were racing around the world. When we got to the starting line and saw all these small bags on everybody else, we knew we were in big trouble.” A few of this season’s contestants have previously been in the spotlight, including former “Big Brother” houseguests Jordan Lloyd, 22, and Jeff Schroeder, 31, as well as former Miss Teen South Carolina Caitlin Upton, 20, who is racing with her boyfriend, Brent Horne, 28. Upton said she wanted to redeem herself on the race after

her infamous 2007 pageant flub involving a confused and mangled response to a geography question. “People always picture me as the typical pageant girl, and I’m not at all,” said Upton. “I’ve only been in five pageants. I’m actually a very athletic person. I’m just tired of being represented from that standpoint. I want to show people who I really am as a person, that I am capable of accomplishing anything and doing anything I put my mind to.” Lloyd and Schroeder, who began dating after Lloyd won the 11th season of “Big Brother” last summer, said fans of the claustrophobic reality show might be surprised to see how much the duo bickered on the 16th season of “The Amazing Race,” which was filmed last November and December and spanned nearly 40,000 miles across five continents and eight countries. “I wasn’t prepared for how much we had to work together,” admitted Schroeder. “He wanted to ring my neck,” added Lloyd, “and other times I wanted to kill him.” “Jordan, I was trying to say it in a nice way,” said Schroeder. For the first time, when the teams departed “The Amazing Race” starting line, they had to rely solely on public transportation — no rental cars, no taxis — to make their way from downtown Los Angeles to the airport, a worldclass challenge in itself. Executive producer Bertram van Munster said the racers then headed to Valparaiso, Chile. Other stops included France and the Seychelles. “We have never been to that place before,” van Munster said of the lush island destination off the east coast of Africa. “We were looking into going to Africa, but I couldn’t find any countries that would fit into the entire scheme of the race, and I wanted to go to an original place. It’s very beautiful. It’s very remote. It takes forever to get there.”
