Make your home efficient – and more comfortable – with simple do-it-yourself projects.

Simple DIY projects to save energy (BPT) - Did you know it takes just one afternoon to save money on your utility bills? Take on a few easy DIY projects this weekend to see immediate savings while making your home more comfortable and environmentally friendly for the long term. As cold months quickly approach, now is the perfect time to improve your home’s energy efficiency and set the stage for a warm, comfortable home this winter. One way to boost your home’s energy efficiency is to make sure it’s properly insulated. That doesn’t mean starting from square one or having to make a large investment to re-insulate your home from its foundation. There are several easy ways that you can add insulation and air sealing to your home quickly, easily and cost-effectively so that you can reap immediate benefits. Seal gaps throughout the home. Having trouble keeping your home comfortable year-round? You’re not alone. The average homeowner spends $1,300 a year on energy utility costs, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Air leaks account for 25-40 percent of the energy used for heating and cooling in a typical home. Products like Great Stuff Insulating Foam Sealants from Dow Building Solutions seal those gaps to help you keep the warm air in. Simply spray the insulating sealant in gaps and cracks in the home or attic around doors, windows, plumbing pipes and electrical outlets. Within minutes, it expands to close the gaps to deliver long-lasting results. A recent study conducted by Dow Building Solutions and DR Nelson & Associates showed an annual $45 savings by sealing plumbing penetrations under sinks with sealants like Great Stuff Insulating Foam Sealants. Insulate the basement ceiling. Rim joists, the area where the basement wall meets the ceiling, are a major source of lost air. If your home has an unfinished basement with rim joists that are lined with

precut sections of fiberglass insulation called batt insulation, pop out the insulation and spray Great Stuff Gaps & Cracks along the inner edges of each joist, like you’re outlining a picture frame. The foam expands to form an airtight, water-resistant seal that closes any gaps. In addition to eliminating cold, drafty air, you’ll start saving money immediately. Blanket your water heater. In between hot showers and dishwashing, your water heater continues to store hot water. The heat that’s lost in the process is called standby heat loss and frequently occurs in old water heaters that lack proper insulation. If you have a new water heater, it is likely already insulated. For older water heaters check that it has insulation with an R-value of 24 or higher. If it doesn’t, you can find pre-cut jackets or blankets at most hardware stores that are specifically made for water heaters for around $20. This quick and simple project could reduce standby heat losses by 25-45 percent and save you approximately 4-9 percent in water heating costs, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Sweep seal your front door. Gaps beneath doors that lead to the outside allow air to creep in. Slide a U-shaped door sweep directly under the door. It’s an easy, cost-effective way to build a barrier that blocks the cold weather. Add insulation to drafty windows. Great Stuff Window & Door creates a strong seal with a special low-pressure formula that insulates the window without bending the frame. Add another layer of protection against the threat of cold air by decorating with shades that reduce heat loss. Dual shades that feature reflective white on one side and a heat-absorbing dark color on the other can be reversed depending on the season to increase energy efficiency. Position the shade so the reflective white faces the inside of the room in the cool months to trap the warm air.

City mulls purchase of new street sweeper By MATT WINTE mwinte@edwpub.net

Gerber Road water tower painting project placed on hold

Currently the city of Edwardsville has a street sweeper that is more than 10 years old and now the Public Services Committee is recommending approval of a sole source resolution to purchase a new one. The street sweeper the city is seeking to purchase is a TYMCO Model 500X High Side Dump Regenerative Air Sweeper from EJ Equipment for $242,000. Public Works Director Eric Williams told the com-

mittee the street sweeper is a demo unit that the city previously used after this year's Halloween Parade. In addition, Williams said the purchase of a new street sweeper was not included in the budget, but a fund was created for future large purchases. Williams said the city would be saving some money since it is a demo unit and because of new standards for emissions being put into place next year. "If we move forward with the purchase of this demo unit it would be right at $29,000 less than what one

would be if we bought a 2015 model year," Williams said. While considering the purchase of a street sweeper Williams said staff looked at the cost for the city for the current year in comparison to what it would be to have a third party company sweep the streets. "The numbers really show that it makes more sense to keep it in-house versus contracting it out," Williams said. By city crews doing it themselves, they save approxi-

mately $45,000 per year. Benefits of the new unit include the fact that it uses air to dislodge any debris before sucking it up and that it is a side dump unit that can easily empty into either a truck or dumpster. A motion and second were made and the sole source resolution will be forwarded to the Finance Committee with a recommendation to approve. In other business, the committee approved a recommendation to reject the bids for repainting the Gerber Road Water Tower. See "CITY" on Page 3

Red Wing Blackbird Feeding a Gold Fish by James Froese.

The work of the late James Froese will be exhibited in the Edwardsville Arts Center Main Gallery Jan. 9 through Feb. 13. A former University of Missouri faculty member, Froese's background runs deep in blue collar, Kansas, sketching, painting and the outdoors, and his art reflects all of these and more. "As a kid, him and his brother both took to art," Froese's son Ethan noted about his father's love of art. Froese would go on to earn a bachelor of fine arts degree from the Kansas City Art Institute under a full scholarship and graduate second in his class. He continued his studies, working toward his MFA degree, at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, but he finished his masters in fine arts at Wichita University. Upon graduating, Froese began teaching art at Jacksonville State

University in Alabama. " While he was there he had a joint show with Salvador Dali," Ethan pointed out. "Then he moved here as a professor at Columbia and won all kinds of awards." In 1968 Froese became the head of the University of Missouri's Art Extension program where he continued to teach art until he retired. After retiring, Froese retreated from the public eye as he concentrated on his private art work. "He just was off to a great track as an artist. Then he just slowly turned into a recluse," Ethan said. Froese passed away in 2012. Ethan described his father's life as "a prolific story." "To really get at dad, you kind of had to understand that he was a very paradoxical figure," Ethan explained. "That he's really tied to Kansas blue-collar roots. That's how he grew up. He was a real blue collar guy. He hunted and fished and worked at service stations. His parents were fairly poor." See "ART" on Page 3

tant from any possible development in the area. Bowden and Building and Zoning Administrator David Coody meet with the owners of the property – Bruce and Kathy Long – that could be purchased by the village. "Dave and I got to sit down with the owners of the properties that are adjacent to the cemetery – Kathy Long and her husband, Bruce. We asked them about the village picking up some of the property adjacent to it . . . near the alley," Bowden told the committee. "It would be good if we were to purchase the property as a whole – $600,000. I said what about cutting a sliver off. They were very lukewarm in that position. They weren’t interested in splitting it off unless they could sell it all.” Bowden said the total price is more than he believes the village is willing to spend. See "VILLAGE" on Page 3

Incumbents in city to run unopposed By STEVE HORRELL shorrell@edwpub.net

If Glen Carbon expands its village-owned cemetery, it's going to take a little bit of time and, apparently, a whole lot of money. Village Administrator Jamie Bowden provided the Public Services Committee with an update on a possible expansion of the cemetery – which is located up the hill off South Main Street in the area behind Casey's General Store. The cemetery was established in 1901 by the Glen Carbon Village board and since that time has maintained it as more and more area residents have elected to be buried there. At the committee's December meeting, three cemetery supporters inquired about the possibility of buying land on the south and east sides of the cemetery to keep it dis-

Wood brings a natural beauty to any home.

Wood’s beauty can change a home (BPT) - Ever since humans stopped dwelling in caves and started living in huts made of tree branches, wood has been an indispensible structural and decorative residential material. Man’s house-building relationship with wood - historically, culturally and experientially - is deep, long and universal. In part that’s because wood is abundant, economical, durable and flexible. But our enduring love affair with wood is also due to the fact that, like us, each piece of timber is unique - its color, texture and grain are as individual as a human personality, so we keep discovering new aspects of its beauty and versatility to delight in. Architects, designers and homeowners are creatively using wood’s inimitable qualities to bring character, warmth and distinction to different parts of the modern home. In Denver, Colorado, Sun Mountain, Inc., a manufacturer of custom doors and flooring, used select-grade alder - a hardwood with a tight grain and few knotholes - for a traditional-style double front door. The elegantly rustic design, which combines solid alder with glass panels and metal hardware, is set off by the house’s dry-stacked limestone walls. “The double-pane glass doorlites are hermetically sealed for insulation against the Colorado winters,” says Ed Wright, Sun Mountain’s vice president of marketing. “And the door handles are bronze with a rubbed oil finish.” The total effect is at once substantial and low-key - country style that’s sophisticated but with a sense of welcome that is so essential for a front entrance. An entry hall is an equally suitable space for the beguiling charms of hardwood. Behind the custom poplar front door of a new residence in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania - a collaboration between Archer & Buchanan Architecture, Ltd., and E.B. Mahoney Builders,

Inc. - the hall is a fine example of traditional, millwork-intensive style. Featuring a beautifully proportioned staircase, painted poplar paneling and wide-plank flooring, it was inspired by the work of architect, R. Brognard Okie, who designed many fine Colonial Revival houses in Philadelphia area between 1900 and 1945. The hall’s sense of Old World graciousness is further enhanced by the use of locally sourced red oak for the floors and stair treads. “The 24-inches to 32-inches wide planks come from a Bucks County, Pennsylvania, mill run by two brothers in their seventies,” says builder Ed Mahoney. “The workshop was surrounded by huge old-growth oak trees from which the planks were cut - they had to be ordered months in advance. The boards are plain - not tongue and groove - and stained with a satin finish. We left them in the house for a month to stabilize before installing them.” Wood can be used to create a sense of intimacy and ease and is demonstrated in the library of a very large retreat in Lake Keowee, South Carolina. Not only is the fireplace surrounded by quarter-sawn oak mantle and trim, the whole room is paneled in the same hardwood, which is also used for the coffered ceiling and floors. The library’s intimate scale and traditional detailing were inspired by a ship captain’s quarters - a subtle reference to both the home’s lakeside location and the style in which the house is built. Designed by Atlanta-based architect Stephen Fuller and constructed by Gabriel Builders, Inc., the imposing house is a playful take on the grand Shingle Style made famous by New England’s “summer cottages.” But Fuller made sure to include a number of smaller, cozier rooms where the family would feel snug and comfortable, and he often used wood to achieve this. Such is the case in the library, where the wonderful familiarity of the oak makes the room a tranquil, reassuring haven.

BPT photo

Families spend a lot of time in the kitchen – make sure yours is efficient and attractive.

Create your own dream kitchen (BPT) - Homeowners have spent more on kitchen remodeling than any other home improvement category in the last 10 years, according to Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies - and there’s good reason. An updated kitchen does more than boost the value of your home; whether you make just a few changes or completely renovate the entire space, a kitchen that feels new is always refreshing. From basic cooking to frequent entertaining, your dream kitchen should look good and function well. Since the kitchen is ever-evolving, so are the products available. Skip the fads and include ideas that are aesthetically pleasing and withstand the test of time. Here are a few updates that will turn your current space into the one you’ve been dreaming about. Think sinks When remodeling a kitchen, homeowners often overlook the sink, but it’s one element that can make a valuable style statement. While shopping for a new sink and faucet, search for the highest quality materials, like stainless steel, that are just as beautiful as they are practical. If you’re looking for a dramatic focal point - as well as a sink that can accommodate all your pots, baking sheets and glasses - try an apron-front design. This style has been modernized, accessorized and streamlined to suit the needs of today’s homeowners. Moen also offers a stainless steel version that gives this classic a contemporary twist. With a great number of faucets on the market, there’s a design for everyone. The timeless feel of a traditional kitchen is still the most popular. If you want the perfect mix of fashion and function, try the new Brookshire kitchen faucet from Moen, which features decorative touches and classic styling with a pullout design for at-your-fingertips water delivery. It’s equipped with the Reflex system for pulldown

and pullout faucets, which offers self-retraction of the spray wand, as well as an exceptional range of motion, generous reach and secure docking retraction. Be smart with appliances Unlike a rug or lamp, kitchen appliances are not simple to return, so be smart when upgrading these items. Before making a purchase, it’s best to work with a professional for guidance, and weigh all factors, such as who uses the kitchen, how many people are cooking at one time and how often your family cooks. If you’re an aspiring chef, consider a gas range that allows you to control the flame with precision. If you’re a busy mom, electric versions allow you to heat food and boil water faster. It’s also important to consider finishes - if the rest of your fixtures are brushed nickel, you may want to opt for a stainless steel range, refrigerator and dishwasher for a coordinated look. Remember, even if a feature sounds interesting, it doesn’t mean you need it. It’s best to purchase what suits your needs and lifestyle. By making smart choices, and not splurging on unnecessary features, you’ll have the budget to spend money where it matters most for you. Add an island Add beauty, function and value to the heart of the home with an island. Many homeowners choose to build an island within their kitchen as a place for family and friends to gather and socialize. A multi-level design with stools on one side can provide casual seating for guests, leaving the other side available for you to prepare food or serve appetizers. If you like to cook and entertain, you may also want a design that includes a bar/prep sink and beverage faucet - this will aid in prep and provide fresh drinking water. The SIP beverage faucet from Moen offers a coordinating style for every decorating taste.

Don’t put off the home improvement projects you have planned for the new year.

New ideas for the new year The beginning of a year usually means one thing: endless resolutions. As you bid farewell to the holidays, it’s all about what you want to change, upgrade and do better. Health and well-being are always the first things that come to mind, but don’t overlook your home. In fact, sometimes it’s the first place to start - from a total overhaul to the simplest design changes. Those major or minor design decisions can really impact not only how you live, but also the health and happiness of you, your family and your home. “As we move in to the New Year, it’s about embracing function but also creating a space that’s a strong reflection of the people who live there,” says Nate Berkus, renowned decorator, designer and artistic advisor to LG Studio. “Forget fleeting trends - 2015 is all about integrating thoughtful elements that have a lasting impact,” adds Berkus, who offers these tips: Get organized The first thing, and maybe the most important, is to clean the house. Don’t underestimate how important that is, and what a difference it will make! Next, clean up the clutter. Getting rid of all the clutter, which has probably been piling up all year, will allow a room to really shine again. It’s all about editing - throw out what no longer works to make room for things that are necessary to live well. High tech, high touch Whether a gourmet chef or a total novice in the kitchen, take advantage of all the incredible high tech appliances out there. I’m obsessed with the LG Studio double wall oven, which includes 100 auto-cook recipes built in to its one-touch activation control system. It makes cooking a cinch even for someone like me! Brighten your outlook

If there’s one easy change to make in a home, make it the lighting. Maybe it’s a pair of vintage lamps from the local flea market on the console that just pull the room together. Or perhaps it’s a pair of statement sconces in the bedroom or a pendant light in the entryway. When it comes to design tricks, lighting is one of them. It can change the whole feel of a room in an instant. Changes that last Maybe 2015 is the year that you commit to that renovation. If thinking of a full kitchen remodel, I say go for it. It’s one of the best investments to make in the home. Reach for things that will feel timeless, now and in the future because replacing your stove, or wall tiles, or flooring the next year or even after 10 years, is not an option. When it comes to the appliances, go for matching stainless steel; they have a forever feel that will absolutely up the style factor of the kitchen. Every appliance in the kitchen needs to be very hardworking. So, maybe it’s a large-capacity French-door refrigerator, like the one from the LG Studio suite of appliances. I particularly love the Door-in-Door feature, especially for a large family, as it has easy access to your favorite foods and more room for storage. Be bold If you’re not able to take on a full kitchen renovation this year, don’t worry - it can be as simple as layering in some color. Adding in a bold accessory is one of the easiest ways to change the look and feel of a room. I always encourage people to go with what they love, and if what you love is a gold ottoman, bright purple throw pillows or a dramatic piece of art, then I say go for it. Color is such a great way to add personality, and accent pieces are the best way to make a statement; if by summer it’s time for another refresh, those pieces are easy enough to change out.

Make the most of winter’s confinement by tackling a painting project.

Easy ways to warm up (BPT) - Cooler temperatures are on here and now is the ideal time to begin checking items off your seasonal to-do list. Complete simple projects before the harsh winter weather arrives so your home is ready to enjoy in the coming season. Add some pizzazz with paint Winter is the perfect painting season, especially if you’re looking for a simple weekend project that provides instant results. Mild temperatures allow you to open windows and circulate fresh air while applying new color to your walls. Select bright shades for interior spaces to fend off the potential winter blues in the months ahead. Dutch Boy Paint recently partnered with three top bloggers to make over their spaces with fresh, fun colors. Elsie Larson from A Beautiful Mess, a blog focused on creating happiness through a homemade lifestyle, shared how to quickly and easily personalize a bedroom by painting an accent wall with East Bay, a bright turquoise hue that’s sure to help lift your spirits. See how she used Dutch Boy Platinum interior paint, which is available exclusively at Menards, to transform a dull space into her dream bedroom at www.dutchboy.com/projects. Platinum’s No Prep, No Prime formula makes it possible to paint over drywall without the need to sand or prime, saving valuable time without sacrificing results. Platinum is even available in 8-ounce color samples so you can test a variety of colors before selecting your perfect hue. Space warming tricks Now that you’ve warmed up your space with color, you can focus on preparing the rest of your home for the winter months. Flip your ceiling fan blades so they run counterclock-

wise - which will push warmer air down to instantly heat up the room. A fast fix to keep cold air out and warmer air in is to install weather stripping on your doors and windows. Regulate the temperature of your home by adding area rugs for extra layers of insulation, especially if you have wood floors. Make sure you’re not left out in the cold by scheduling a furnace checkup to ensure everything’s running properly. You’ll thank yourself later for not waiting until it breaks during a snowstorm to have it fixed. If your home has a fireplace and chimney, hire a professional chimney sweep to remove any debris that could potentially ignite and wreak havoc on your home during the months ahead. Outside guide Even though much of your time will be spent indoors during cold months, it’s important to remember your outdoor obligations. Winterize any pipes that are exposed to outdoor temperatures and turn off the water to exterior faucets. Be sure to disconnect all hoses and spigots and drain all remaining water from the pipes, as leftover water can freeze and cause the pipes to burst. Cover grills and air conditioning units, and store outdoor furniture, umbrellas and cushions in a shed, garage or covered area to prevent rust and damage from the elements. Thoroughly clean gutters, give your lawn a final mowing and fertilize and prune your flowers just before the temperatures begin to drop. This will minimize the work that needs to be done when the ground thaws in spring. By taking the proper precautions and completing these seasonal projects now, you’ll save time and money, all while keeping your home well-maintained and looking great heading into the months ahead.

Installing a new faucet is less labor-intensive than you might think.

Answers to plumbing questions (BPT) - Installing or fixing a faucet can seem like a daunting task. But, in many cases homeowners can update the kitchen and bath themselves - all you need are the right tools, good judgment and a little time to devote to the project. Here are the top four plumbing questions plumbing customer service agents receive most often, and if you are ever unsure, a licensed plumber can be an exceptional resource. 1. Does it take long to install a faucet? The toughest part of the job can be removing the old faucet. Before starting the project, make sure you have the essential items to install the new faucet easily. Products to keep in your toolbox include: a crosshead and regular screwdriver; adjustable wrench or basin wrench for hard-to-reach areas; flashlight; pliers; plumber’s putty; thread seal tape; and an Allen wrench. Once you’ve checked your list, it should take about an hour, but that will vary based on your level of previous installation experience. 2. Can I replace a two-handle faucet with a single-handle model? In many cases, mounting hardware and flexible hookups will let you replace your current two-handle model with a single-handle one. Many single-handle faucets are available with deck plates to provide an attractive covering. There are advantages to having a single-handle - many pulldown or pullout faucets are designed with a single-handle, allowing homeowners to easily clean around the kitchen sink. Also, it’s easier to turn off one handle when completing tasks in the kitchen. 3. Is there another option for a kitchen faucet other than a standard mechanical faucet? And what are the benefits? For ultimate convenience in the kitchen, consider a hands-free faucet that senses what you’re trying to accomplish. Imagine having raw chicken on your hands as you’re making dinner; just place

your hands under a MotionSense faucet from Moen and the water automatically turns on - as soon as you move your hands away, the water turns off. Do you need the water left on for a longer period, like when you’re washing dishes? Just wave your hand over the top of the faucet to activate the Wave Sensor. Plus, it’s available in a variety of styles like Moen’s transitionally styled Arbor kitchen faucet, or a traditional style like the Brantford kitchen faucet to coordinate with your design preference. “MotionSense was thoughtfully designed based on consumers’ behaviors and preferences in the kitchen,” says Tom Tylicki, Moen senior wholesale kitchen product manager. “Moen’s technology simply requires a wave of the hand or movement beneath the spout, no need to touch or tap the faucet, to experience the benefits of MotionSense. It intuitively understands exactly what you’re trying to do, and responds immediately to your needs.” 4. What causes a faucet to leak or drip? Having a leaky faucet is annoying but it’s something that shouldn’t be ignored. There are several reasons for drips but usually it’s a simple solution. Leaks are often caused by internal mechanisms that need to be replaced such as a scratched or torn cartridge, O-ring or grommet. Typically, a cartridge replacement - which is both inexpensive and easy - will correct this type of leak. Try troubleshooting a few options and if there are still problems, it may be time to call a professional plumber. These answers should help during your next remodel or repair and provide you with years of attractive and convenient water delivery. Always remember, should you ever need help, a friendly customer service expert is only a phone call away.

A variety of factors make winter a dangerous time of year.

Essential winter home safety checks (BPT) - Home fires, carbon monoxide poisonings and home break-ins tend to increase during the winter months. If you’re aware of the increase in dangers to your home during the cold-weather season, you have the power to take precautions. Now is the perfect time for you and your family to review a few essential home safety checks. If you plan on hosting a family gathering, or are going to be traveling and away from your home, these safety tips can give you the peace of mind you need to enjoy the season and ensure that your home is both safe and secure. Tip 1: Install and update alerts - If you haven’t found time to replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors recently, then be sure to do so now. If the batteries are in good order, check that each detector is working by pressing the test button monthly. You should have detectors in every bedroom in the house, as well as one on each floor according to the National Fire Protection Association. Tip 2: Get smart, get safe - When you’re not home, who’s watching it for you? If the answer is no one, it could be an issue if your alarms go off, your kids forget their keys, you are expecting a delivery or even if there’s a break in. With a system like ADT Pulse, users can keep an eye on their home no matter where they are, as well as unlock doors, view real-time camera footage and remotely disable alarms. Plus, with 24/7 monitoring, homeowners can rest assured knowing that, if their home or family is in danger, ADT can auto-

matically dispatch assistance and send alerts. Tip 3: Practice safe heating practices - When the temperatures drop, it’s easy to resort to quick fixes like space heaters to keep warm. Avoid the fire risk altogether by choosing safer routes. Those include turning up the temperature on your furnace, wearing heavier layers of clothing or switching on your fireplace. Space heaters can be used, but should be placed in the middle of a room and far away from any fabric items like rugs, curtains or furniture. Also, be sure to never leave a space heater unattended. Tip 4: Set up a safety plan - Establish a family safety plan so everyone knows how to act and where to go during a time of emergency. For example, discuss when it’s appropriate - and safe - to call 911, plan and review safe evacuation routes for every room in the house and pick a location where the family should meet outside the home in case of a fire or carbon monoxide alarms sounding. Tip 5: Make the home look lived in - Whether it’s shoveling snow, picking up newspapers, or keeping your front lights lit, a home that looks lived in is a deterrent for thieves. If you have travel plans this winter, ask neighbors or nearby relatives to take care of light maintenance on the property, and to make sure packages and mail are brought inside and waste bins are not left by the curb. Awareness is the key to making your home more safe this winter. With this awareness, you can take precautions to help protect your home and family. For additional safety tips and to learn about ADT Pulse, visit www.ADT.com.

Something as simple as switching to LED light bulbs can save homeowners money.

Energy-saving resolutions (BPT) - It’s another new year - the perfect time to make a fresh start and set plans to achieve new goals. As you put the finishing touches on your resolutions, this is a great time to consider adding a few energy-saving commitments to the list. Taking small steps throughout the year can lead to big results - not only helping lower your energy bills but also helping to protect the planet. In celebration of the new year, here are some ways you can resolve to save energy and help fight climate change, all year ‘round: * Install and set a programmable thermostat. Save money on your heating and cooling bills every day by upgrading to a programmable thermostat. Take advantage of its pre-programmed settings to automatically adjust your home’s temperature when you are home, asleep or away - all without sacrificing comfort. By properly setting a programmable thermostat and maintaining those settings, you can save about $180 a year. * Upgrade your aging fridge. Older refrigerators waste tons of energy compared to newer, more efficient models. If all refrigerators sold in the United States were Energy Star certified, about 8 billion pounds of annual greenhouse gas emissions would be prevented. The cost savings are just as impressive. For instance, LG’s energy-saving door-in-door refrigerators can save you as much as $300 on energy costs over their lifetime. Just remember - moving your old refrigerator to the garage or basement as a “beer fridge” defeats the purpose because it’s still using energy. For maximum savings, make sure to recycle your old fridge. * Flip the switch to energy-saving lighting. About 10 percent of the energy your home uses goes to lighting costs. By replacing just five of your home’s most frequently used lights with energy-efficient bulbs, you could save up to $80 a year in electricity costs over each bulb’s lifetime. Energy Star-certified bulbs use 70 to 90 percent

less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and produce significantly less heat, making them safer to operate. For the highest energy-savings, choose LEDs which can last up to 25 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. * Save energy even while watching TV. With televisions getting bigger and bigger, it’s no wonder that many consumers say that energy efficiency will be a factor in their next TV choice. Look for the Energy Star label to save energy and money. These TVs are on average over 25 percent more energy efficient than conventional models, saving energy in all usage modes: sleep, idle and on. Some Internetconnected LED HDTVs, like many webOS smart TVs from LG, are designated as “Energy Star Most Efficient,” meaning they save even more juice without compromising on performance or features. * Consult a home performance contractor to achieve larger savings. There’s a growing industry of professional energy assessors qualified to give you recommendations on how to improve the overall energy efficiency of your home. These industry professionals will do a comprehensive energy audit of your whole house using special tools to measure home energy efficiency. A professional energy audit gives you a thorough picture of where your home is losing energy and what you can do to save money. By making upgrades (especially sealing air leaks and properly insulating your home), you can expect to save 15 to 30 percent or more in energy costs, while also improving your home’s comfort and air quality. By following one or more of these simple tips, you can save hundreds of dollars in energy costs all through the year. LG Electronics, an Energy Star Partner of the Year, invites you to learn about more ways to be efficient and take the Energy Star Pledge. Keeping your energy saving resolutions can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help fight climate change for years to come.
