QuickGlance Movie Reviews
"Toni Erdmann"
"Toni Erdmann " is a hard film to love, but that might be the point. The German movie from the clearly talented and incisive writer/director Maren Ade seems like it should be a comedy — the lightly plotted character study is about a father trying to introduce some chaos into his adult daughter's overworked life — but it's far too cutting and uncomfortable to generate much joy. It all hinges on how you view the father, Winifried, played by actor Peter Simonischek. Winifried is a hearty-looking man, likely in his 60s, who has a mop of unruly gray hair and a penchant for what might generously be described as pranks. He keeps a set of fake teeth in his shirt pocket which he'll pop in from time to time when he wants to take on one of his personas. He'll do this with delivery people, strangers, his mother and his extended family. But those on the receiving end never seem all that amused by Winifried's antics. Strangers don't quite know what to do with him, and his family just kind of disregard his oddities through clenched teeth. Both kinds of interactions can be almost painful to watch and even after two viewings I can't get a handle on how the movie wants us to see him, especially once he decides to concentrate all of his efforts on his 30-something daughter, Ines (Sandra Hüller). RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong sexual content, graphic nudity, language and brief drug use." RUNNING TIME: 162 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"Hidden Figures"
Theodore Melfi's buoyant "Hidden Figures" is an oldfashioned feel-good movie with powerful contemporary relevance, spearheaded by a trio of unstoppable actresses playing black women who wouldn't be stopped. Set in 1961 Virginia, the fact-based "Hidden Figures," adapted from Margot Lee Shetterly's non-fiction book, is about three peripheral characters at NASA who made important contributions to the space race. Their workplace, at Langley, is segregated (with separate bathrooms and drinking fountains) and the offices are uniformly run by white males in suits. But the talent and smarts of mathematician Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), budding engineer Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) and computer supervisor Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) are becoming impossible to ignore. Metaphors are all around. While rockets lift off, the women of "Hidden Figures" strive for their own upward movement. Arithmetic surrounds them, but they're continuously underestimated. "That's NASA for you. Fast with rocket ships, slow with advancement," says Kirsten Dunst's manager. Johnson is pulled out of a pool of computers (human ones, though a room-sized IBM makes a late appearance) and brought into the all-white rocket center to check the trajectories and calculations of the scientists rushing to match Sputnik and lift John Glenn (Glen Powell) into space. Their leader is Al Harrison (a fine, scenechewing Kevin Costner), who compassionately responds to Johnson's rise. But "Hidden Figures," punctuated by bright original songs by Pharrell Williams (who also collaborated with Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch on the score), avoids many of the typical notes of a civil rights drama and keeps its focus on its three indomitable leads and their characters' private lives. Nobody would mistake it for a deeply complicated examination of segregation and no one will wonder if Melfi's film is going to end on a high note. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "thematic elements and some language." RUNNING TIME: 126 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

On the Edge of the Weekend
"I, Daniel Blake"
Just like a Michael Moore documentary, there's nothing subtle about a Ken Loach drama. The 80-year-old British director and social critic has long been an ardent, insistent, eloquent champion of the more vulnerable members of society — particularly working-class folks who are trying to do the right thing but just can't catch a break. Whether he's exploring homelessness, poverty or other social ills, Loach's arguments, and emotions, are always crystal clear. Loach has been making movies for a half-century — some more effective than others — but he's in beautiful form with "I, Daniel Blake," a searing look at one man's seemingly futile fight against the British welfare system, against the encroachment of technology into our lives, and most of all, against the forces that can conspire to make people feel small and insignificant and, well, not human. There are moments when "I, Daniel Blake" — which won the Palme D'Or at Cannes — feels like a documentary, and that's largely due to the pitch-perfect cast Loach has assembled, from star Dave Johns — a comedian who is occasionally funny here but also proud, anguished and increasingly angry — down to those with the smallest parts: a security guard, a food bank employee, a kind-hearted worker at an employment office. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for language." RUNNING TIME: 100 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"Live by Night"
Ben Affleck is no doubt an ambitious and tasteful filmmaker, but he's gotten himself in a bit of hot water with the bloated period gangster epic "Live by Night ." It looks and sounds right and all the elements are there: A conflicted anti-hero with a granite jaw, a fast-talkin', two-timin' moll, crooked cops, and a sweaty loyal partner. There's the one-last-job-gone-awry, some rum-running, a few epic shootouts and the big questions about whether or not our man has become everything he swore he wouldn't. It seems like enough to hold audience interest for a few hours, but somehow even with all that going for it (not to mention a parade of recognizable faces), "Live by Night" is dull as sin. The story is adapted by Affleck from a Dennis Lehane novel of the same name. Lehane is the author of the source material for some good to great films like "Mystic River," ''Shutter Island" and Affleck's first stab at directing, "Gone Baby Gone." It was a decent gamble that "Live by Night" would be pretty good, too. Affleck has put himself front and center here as the lead, Joe Coughlin, a once good man who became jaded after serving in World War I. He came back to his hometown of Boston, where his father (Brendan Gleeson) is the Police Chief, with the intention of never answering to anyone. We don't ever see Joe as a standup citizen, only robbing banks and sleeping with Emma Gould (Sienna Miller), the mistress of the town's most notorious mob boss Albert White (Robert Glenister). Naturally as soon as Emma and Joe decide to skip town and find a new life somewhere warm (where they come so close to saying that they'll "live by night" it's almost annoying that they don't), things take a turn and Joe is left beaten to a pulp, imprisoned and alone. When he gets out, revenge against Albert White is the only thing on his mind, so he heads to Florida to work for a rival. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong violence, language throughout, and some sexuality/ nudity." RUNNING TIME: 128 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"The Founder"
Ketchup, mustard, two pickles. In John Lee Hancock's "The Founder," about Ray Kroc and the making of McDonald's, the ingredients for success are ruthlessly simple. When Kroc (Michael Keaton), a struggling traveling salesmen selling milkshake mixers, first beelines to San Bernardino, California, in 1954 to get a look at Dick (Nick Offerman) and Mac (John Carroll Lynch) McDonald's burger joint, he stands agog at the counter. Moments after he orders, Kroc is handed his burger and fries in a bag, but he might as well have been flame-grilled by lightning. "But I just ordered," he stutters. Kroc quickly recognizes the revolutionary power of the McDonalds' restaurant and becomes its franchise-driver and the pre-eminent proselytizer of an empire built on burgers. The arches, an invention of Dick's just like its other innovations, will spread "from sea to shining sea," Kroc vows. As a gathering place for families, it will be "the new American church, open seven days a week," he says. "It requires a certain kind of mind to see the beauty in a hamburger bun," wrote David Halberstam of the minds behind McDonalds in "The Fifties." Of course, the genius behind McDonald's lied largely with Dick McDonald, who engineered the "speedee service system" of its assembly linelike kitchen, designed its layout and focused its tiny menu. But the ironically titled "The Founder" is not about him. It's about Kroc, a hard-drinking, slightly shifty Illinois salesman who took the idea of the McDonalds and spread it around the world through sheer (and sometimes unscrupulous) force of will and savvy standardization. In the opening scenes, Kroc, struggling to eke out a living on the road, faithfully listens to Norman Vincent Peale's "The Power of Positive Thinking." ''Persistence, determination alone are all powerful," Kroc absorbs. "The Founder" is a quintessentially post-war American story about a self-made man largely made by others. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "brief strong language." RUNNING TIME: 115 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"The Red Turtle"
When was the last time an animated film actual lowered your pulse rate? In its typical Hollywood form, an animated feature is usually the cinematic equivalent of a sugar rush — a frantic barrage of colors and movement and jokes and sounds. It's safe to say that "The Red Turtle," a fortuitous collaboration between Japan's famed Studio Ghibli and Dutch animator-director Michael Dudok de Wit, is very, very different. A fable, beautifully drawn in calm, soothing colors, it doesn't even have dialogue, let alone a throbbing soundtrack. Those sounds you hear are the sounds of silence, and eventually they become hypnotic. As Dudok de Wit tells it, he received an email out of the blue in 2006 from the vaunted animation studio, asking if he'd be interested in working on his first feature (the director is known for his animated shorts.) He was, and he came up with the story of a man cast away on a deserted island. The director's research took him to his own deserted island, in the Seychelles, where he shot thousands of photographs. He wanted to recreate the feeling of how time stands still in such a place. He spent nine years creating that animated world. And you can tell. The film begins with a roiling sea. A man is lost in the waves; we don't know how he got there. Finally, he washes up on a tranquil island, inhabited seemingly only by a few friendly crabs on the beach. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America "for some thematic elements and peril." RUNNING TIME: 80 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

This image released by Lionsgate shows Ryan Gosling, right, and Emma Stone in a scene from, "La La Land."
"La La Land" makes Oscar history By JAKE COYLE Associated Press H i s t o r y w a s m a d e a c ro s s Tu e s d a y ' s 8 9 t h a n n u a l A c a d e m y Aw a r d s n o m i n a t i o n s , w h e re t h e re t ro m u s i c a l "La La Land" reaped a record-tying 14 nominations and a wave of AfricanAmerican films, led by the luminous coming-of-age portrait "Moonlight," resoundingly toppled two straight years of "so white" Oscars. The twin forces — Damien Chazelle's candy-colored love letter to musicals and a broad group of diverse films that also included Denzel Washington's fiery August Wilson adaptation "Fences" and the uplifting African-American mathematician
tale "Hidden Figures" — dominated the nominations . The 14 nods for "La La Land," including best picture, best actress for Emma Stone, best actor for Ryan Gosling and best director for Chazelle, matched the record hauls of 1997's "Titanic" and 1950's "All About Eve." A disoriented Chazelle, speaking by phone from Beijing, said, "All that I have in my head is 'thank you' a million times over." Also a record: the six black actors nominated, including "Fences" stars Washington and Viola Davis, Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris of "Moonlight," Ruth Negga of "Loving" and Octavia Spencer of "Hidden Figures." Dev Patel, the BritishIndian star of "Lion," was also nominated, making it seven actors of color nominated out
of 20. It made for a stark contrast to the last two years of all-white acting nominees, a disparity that prompted widespread outrage throughout the film industry and led academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs to revamp the academy's membership. Jenkins, who was nominated for directing and adapted screenplay, said the eight nominations for "Moonlight" and those for other films showed that people were eager to put themselves in the shoes of others. "Moonlight," ''Fences" and "Hidden Figures" were each nominated for best picture. "I love the American film industry and to see it this year, I feel, really reflect the world that we all live and work in, it gives me hope," Jenkins said by phone from Amsterdam. "It
heartens me. There's a lot of work being done to make this year not be an anomaly." Nine films out of a possible ten were nominated for best picture. The others were: Denis Villeneuve's cerebral alien thriller "Arrival," Kenneth Lonergan's New England family drama "Manchester by the Sea," the West Texas heist thriller "Hell or High Water," the "Lion," and Mel Gibson's World War II drama "Hacksaw Ridge." Redemption was everywhere: for a previously diversity-deficient Oscars, for the old-fashioned musical and even for the longshunned Gibson. Days after the birth of his ninth child, the "Hacksaw Ridge" director was also unexpectedly nominated for best director over the likes of Martin Scorsese ("Silence") and Clint Eastwood ("Sully").
"Gold" doesn't live up to the standard By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge A sane-minded movie critic could easily become frustrated and be driven crazy trying to follow the career of Matthew McConaughey, a talented figure with an Oscar on his resume, w h o s e l a s t ro l e w a s p l a y i n g a showman koala. For every genuine gem like "Dallas Buyers Club" in his filmography there is a "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" that haunts his earlier days as a playboy lead for hire. I loved "Free State of Jones" last year, but "Gold" perplexes me. What would cause a svelte and handsome actor to go paunchy and bald (well, a 'skullet')? Only full commitment to a role that he felt was substantial, I suppose. And that's the problem with "Gold", it's
a meaty role in a thin film, one that is undeserving of his talent and one of the few occasions I would ever say that a two-hour running time was too brief. I was let down by a movie that once had a plum Christmas Day opening date and that was pushed at the last minute. Never a good sign. "Gold" is loosely based on the Bre-X mining scandal from the mid-1990s, but it's so tangentially related that it hardly follows t h e s a m e p ath. K e nny We lls (McConaughey) is a prospector for his granddaddy's mining corporation out of Reno. He's a wide-eyed dreamer who's thrilled to take the reins from his father when the time comes to lead mineral location into the 21st Century. But the late '80s are harsh for Kenny. He's down to his last dime and a joke in
his industry when he blows off to Indonesia in search of Mike Acosta (Edgar Ramirez), a hot hand looking for his own second act resurgence. Together the two set out into the thickest of jungles, build a mine, work to f i n d i n d i g e n o u s l a b o r, c h a i n smoke Marlboros, get laid back by malaria, and strike it rich with the biggest mother lode of the day. Their gold mine is producing results that get some attention from Wall Street, investors, all their dependents back in the civilized world, and the media. A rumored $30 billion in assets has a way of doing that! But it happens so quickly - a rocket ship success, as the movie calls it - that you see a house of cards starting to sway. Just as soon as their ship comes in, fraud is rumored and Mike disappears.
Kenny, left holding the bag, is vilified and implicated by everyone, including his fiancé and biggest fan (Bryce Dallas Howard). His billions disappear. His shares of the company he called into existence are suddenly worthless shells that Mike had been selling out from under him all along. The FBI investigates. Tyrants try to nationalize the claim, but there's nothing to be had. It's all gone just as quickly as it comes. And that's where the real problem with this movie is. It's got no substance. You could make an argument that "Gold" is a good companion piece to "Wolf of Wall Street", another McConaughey picture f ro m 2 0 1 3 . B o t h f e a t u re t h e yuppie obsession with wealth in the glorious "greed is good" days of poorly-regulated 1980s,
February 9, 2017
but "Gold" tries to be more noble. In the middle scenes, Kenny is recognized for being the best in his profession and he quotes poetically in tribute to his dreamer brethren. "Wolf" never pretended any of its characters were good people or working to do something beyond making a buck. And yet it was m o re e n t e r t a i n i n g . E v e n t h e supporting "villains" in this one (Corey Stoll, Bruce Greenwood) are lame. And Kenny's drunken dalliances are rather timid, even when skinny-dipping with " i n v e s t o r re l a t i o n s s p e c i a l i s t " Rachael Taylor. You have my permission to skip it. "Gold" runs 121 minutes and is rated R for language throughout and some sexuality/nudity. I give this film one star out of four.

exhibition is the first to examine a crucial and little-known area of Degas's decades-long study of Parisian modern life. The exhibition situates Degas's output within the context of the work of his fellow Impressionists who were also fascinated by hats, including Édouard Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Mary Cassatt, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The exhibition relates these artists to the enormous industry of hat production and consumption in Paris in the late19th and early-20th century. Degas, Impressionism, and the Paris Millinery Trade is curated by Simon Kelly, the Museum's curator of modern and contemporary art, and Esther Bell, curator-in-charge of European painting at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Bliss to kick off Great Artist Series at Washington University For The Edge
T
he trajectory is always different.
In his final years, Frédéric Chopin (1810-49) moved from graceful Romantic reveries to bracing, dissonant textures. Robert Schumann (1810-56), his health in sharp decline, grew more intimate but also more restless and experimental. Johannes Brahms (1833-97) exchanged large-scale grandeur for subtle introspection. “The question of ‘late style’ has long been of interest to writers and philosophers,” says pianist Jonathan Biss. “What effect do years of accumulated knowledge and experience, combined with, perhaps, the realization that death is near, have on artistic creation?” At 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, Biss will explore that question with “Late Style,” a solo recital highlighting late works by Schumann, Chopin, Brahms and the contemporary Hungarian composer György Kurtág (b. 1926). Presented by the Department of Music in Arts & Sciences, the program will launch Washington University’s new Great Artist Series, which also will feature recitals by Yefim Bronfman (April 23) and Nathan Gunn (May 5). All three performances will take place in the E. Desmond Lee Concert Hall. In addition, the university’s Assembly Series will host a panel discussion titled “Late Moves: Music and Creativity” at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, in the Danforth University Center. Participants will include Biss as well as Dolores Pesce, the Avis Blewett Professor of music, and Brian Carpenter, professor of psychological & brain sciences. Todd Decker, professor and chair of music, will moderate. Program Biss notes that some composers reach their “late periods” as early as their 30s while others arrive in their 80s. “The change is not consistent from composer to composer: some become more concise, others more expansive,” Biss continues. “Some become fixated on death, others find an almost child-like innocence. Some composers wrote their most adventurous music in their late periods, and others pursued an extreme simplicity.” The program will open with “Gesänge der Frühe (Songs of Dawn),” Op. 133, Schumann’s final work for piano, completed in 1853, just three years before his death. Next will be selections from Volume VII of Kurtág’s “Játékok (Games),” an ongoing series — now in its fourth decade — of piano miniatures paying homage to the composer ’s artistic and intellectual circle. That will be followed by “Polonaise-Fantasie,” Op. 61 (1846), one of Chopin’s final published works, inspired by the Polish dance. After intermission, the program will feature three works by Brahms, beginning with the second movement from “Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor, Op. 5” (1853), which the 20-year-old
18
Brahms wrote while a house guest of Schumann’s. The program will conclude with two sets of piano pieces, “Klavierstücke,” Op. 119 and “Klavierstücke,” Op. 118, both of which Brahms wrote in 1893, or three years after announcing his retirement. Known for virtuosic energy

and control, Biss has drawn worldwide praise for the “balance between clarity and wildness” (Kansas City Star) that he brings to both classic and contemporary works. His repertoire ranges from Mozart and Beethoven, through the Romantics to Janáček and Schoenberg, to commissions from
contemporary composers such as Leon Kirchner, Lewis Spratlan, and Bernard Rands. His numerous albums include several recordings of Schumann as well as two short Kurtág pieces, included on “Piano Sonatas” (2009), which NPR Music named one of its best albums of the year.
Biss studied at Indiana University and at the Curtis Institute of Music, where he joined the piano faculty in 2010. Rock of the '70s Tour planned Four-famed acts will appear at The Family Arena in St. Charles on Oct. 14. Foghat’s live performances show why the band is still around today and why they will be able to keep on rockin’ as long as they want. This band truly is timeless. Constant touring is part of their DNA and the band just loves to play. Their live show is as intense as ever with the incredible energy and musicianship that one would expect and hope for from a seasoned band with such a long musical history and they are bringing their fans along for the ride. Foghat fans are everywhere and these days their audience consists of all ages. From the young kids who play Guitar Hero III and know all of the lyrics to ‘Slow Ride’, to the Dazed & Confused generation of 30-40 somethings and the ‘boomers’ who bought Foghat’s first vinyl or 8 track! Firefall was one of the first bands to bring the creative and musical richness of the Rocky Mountain area to the forefront of the industry. They helped spearhead the birth and continuation of the country rock / folk rock sound of the 70's. The band continues to dazzle audiences with their exuberant and rocking performances - this was no 'light rock' band. FIREFALL is a group of exceptional musicians and singers, with a repertoire of recognizable songs few bands can match. Their many hits - "You Are The Woman," "Just Remember I Love You," "Strange Way," " Cinderella," "Mexico," " Livin' Ain't Livin'," " So Long," " Goodbye I Love You," " Sweet and Sour" and others - are faithfully recreated with a freshness rare in live performances of such classics. Formed from the cream of Atlanta’s studio musicians, the Atlanta Rhythm Section (actually hailing from nearby Doraville, Georgia) came together in 1970 after working on a Roy Orbison recording session. In 1977, “So In To You” became the band’s breakthrough single, reaching the U.S. Top 10, and the album from which it came, A Rock And Roll Alternative, went gold. Their platinum follow-up album, Champagne Jam, broke into the Top 10 in 1978, together with the blockbuster single “Imaginary Lover” (“I’m Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight” was another major hit from the same album). From their beginnings in midSixties Ohio as a group of friends playing cover tunes to the present-day unit featuring founding member/ pedal-steel innovator John David Call, veteran bassist Mike Reilly, propulsive drummer Scott Thompson and guitar ace Donnie Clark, Pure Prairie League continues to embellish the rich 43-year history of one of Country-Rock’s pioneering forces. Tickets can be purchased at the Family Arena Ticket Office or online at www.metrotix.com.
Prices: $80 (Gold Circle), $65 (Floor), $55 (100 Level Sidelines), $45 (100 Level Endzone), $35 (Upper Level) To charge by phone call MetroTix at 314-534-1111. To date, Santana has won ten GRAMMY Awards and three Latin GRAMMY Awards. He won a record-tying nine GRAMMYs for a single project for 1999’s Supernatural (including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for “Smooth”) as well as three Latin GRAMMY’s. He has also received the Billboard Century Award (1996), was ushered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1998), received the Billboard Latin Music Awards’ Lifetime Achievement honor (2009), and was the recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors Aw a r d ( 2 0 1 3 ) . A m o n g m a n y other honors, Carlos Santana has been cited by Rolling Stone as #15 on their list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.” And, with the 2014 release of Corazón, Santana surpassed the Rolling Stones and is one of only two music acts in Billboard history to score at least one Top Ten album for six consecutive decades from the 1960s on. April 15, 2016 marks the release date of Santana IV, the wildly anticipated studio album that reunites the revered early ‘70s lineup of guitar icon Carlos Santana (guitar, vocals), Gregg Rolie (keyboards, lead vocals), Neal Schon (guitar, vocals), Michael Carabello (percussion) and Michael Shrieve (drums).

Give thanks and embrace the unexpected As I have said many times, I am an early riser and am usually showered, dressed, have my bed made and ready to go out to my kitchen between six fifteen to six thirty. I then move on to the front door so I can go out and get my morning newspaper. I then fix myself whatever breakfast I want for that day. Since I will be eating alone, I can also read my morning paper. After eating, I move my dishes from the table and begin to complete the paper ’s crossword puzzle. Some days all goes well and I can complete it without too much difficulty, but on other days I struggle and finally go to my crossword puzzle dictionaries for assistance. That works great if what I’m looking for isn’t popular music or movies. Then, I’m as they say, I am up the creek without a paddle. And I must admit defeat. I don’t like to ‘give up’ and stop trying. That isn’t only when the puzzle can’t be completed. I think that is true with most things in my life. If I have decided to do something, I feel frustrated and even sometimes angry when for some
Doris Gvillo reason, my plan doesn’t work out. I ask myself why I should expect success and peace to fill my life and why failure and sorrow seem to surprise me. I’m very old now and I’ve lived long enough to know that my plans don’t always work out, that good and bad are part of life, that joy and happiness come but also pain and sorrow. I have been reading several articles lately that speak about our ‘journey through life’ and how what we have planned very often never happens. Life brings many surprises and unexpected times. I suppose by now I’ve learned it isn’t what happens but how we react to what happens that is important. I think I’ve finally grasped the concept that whatever does happen, we can move ahead, perhaps slowly, perhaps sadly, or perhaps with joy and excitement. It isn’t so much what happens but how we respond to the events life brings our way. I have learned in these over eighty years to realize that whatever does happen, I am never alone. God is
with me, guiding me, challenging me, using me and always loving me. But I also know that at times He must be disappointed in me when I falter or fail. But the reassuring promise that He is always with me helps me to pick up the pieces of broken dreams and move ahead trusting God’s promises.. My years are many and looking back, I see times of plenty and times of want, times of joy and times of sorrow, times of health and times of illness, but I’ve always felt secure that whatever was happening, I wasn’t alone. God was with me and if I doubted that, it wasn’t God who had made distance between us, it was me, myself and I. They say growing old isn’t for sissies and I think I can attest to that. Things that were so easy can become difficult. Sometimes the old brain works great and sometimes I think mine takes a holiday as it seems I get forgetful. When I am feeling lost, forsaken, bewildered, or sad, I must remember that I also felt that way as a child, a teenager, as a younger adult, as a parent, and grandparent. So now that I’m a great grandparent, I’m sure that those days will still come when I feel down, depressed, sad, lonely, angry,
hurt, and lost, but I am confident that, ‘This too shall pass”. I know that I’ve said this before also, but it is something that makes me smile and also offers me comfort and assurance. I recall when Bill and I had been married for some time making the remark, “Isn’t it strange that we used to sit so close in our car and now we have so much room between us?” His reply was, “I’m driving, I haven’t moved.” S o i t i s w i t h o u r G o d , H e re m a i n s constant. If we feel lost and alone, maybe we need to realize He is waiting patiently…it is we who have moved away. OUR God is a loving God who is always with us, so in times of joy and sorrow we can always trust God’s assurance that we are never alone. What m o re c o u l d w e a s k ? W a re s o v e r y blessed. I hope each day that you and I re m e m b e r t o b e t h a n k f u l f o r b e i n g a part of God’s family. Our God loved us enough to send Jesus as our Savior. What greater love can there be? Doris Gvillo is a member of Eden United Church of Christ.
