For The Edge
The historic Coliseum in Benld.
Special event planned at Gillespie Civic Center For The Edge When the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame opened in Cleveland in 1986 five of the original inductees, The Everly Brothers, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, and the Godfather of it all, Chuck Berry had all appeared on the Coliseum Ballroom’s big stage. John Lennon said “If they didn’t call it Rock ’n’ Roll, they’d have to call it Chuck Berry!” The Coliseum was a nursery for the infant Rock ‘n’ Roll in the fifties and sixties and the list of big names that performed there is the stuff of great legend. On Saturday, February 20th, Build Benld and The Coliseum Documentary Project will present “Memories of the Coliseum,” at The Gillespie Civic Center. This is a onetime only event to remember the famous ballroom and commemorate the 40th anniversary of Joyce Tarro’s death. Build Benld is a civic philanthropic group of some very dedicated people who are committed to keeping the town alive and vibrant and is one of the most prolific and active civic organizations in Macoupin County. Build Benld does many events and fund raisers and distributes the money back into their community. They support the Adopt a Pet Shelter, have donated 18 tables to the Benld Civic Center, built Memorial Gazebo Park on Central Avenue, painted playground equipment and added staggered tires for kids to climb, installed Coliseum Ballroom Dancers kiosk and plaque, back fencing and flood light, hosted five senior Christmas dinners, and as of late donated $1900 to the City of Benld for repairs to be made to the bike trail, among many other community causes.
Lynn Shehorn, the promotions and publicity director for Build Benld, said “For many, many years the Coliseum Ballroom and Benld were synonymous. When you thought of one, you thought of the other….and we all knew Joyce. We wanted to commemorate that and all the pieces came together at just the right time to make it happen.” She went on to say, “All of us have just about the same memories. Saturday night with whoever could get the car that night and heading out to Tarro’s with our friends. Meeting guys and girls, great bands, dancing, and maybe sneaking a drink before it was legal…what was better than that when you were 17? What great memories! We want to try to bring that back and share our memories with everyone again.” The BALLROOM BAND will be playing that night. From Nashville, St. Louis, Chicago and Southern California musicians from
all over are coming together to perform for this special onetime event. Everyone in the impressive line-up for the night has played on the big stage at the Coliseum Ballroom. Chuck Wilson along with band members Rick Rayburn and Charlie Wilson will provide the core group for the night. These loyal Coliseum Ballroom Devotees played with most of the great local bands in the late 60s and early 70s, Serra Leigh, Bulls Eye, Sky High and Seadog, to name but just a few. Chuck went on to work with twice Grammy nominated trumpeter Phil Driscoll and with Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons for many years. Musicians that night will include former members of Serra Leigh, the Far Cryse, Kaleidoscope, Griffin, Seadog, Lomax, Castle, Sky High, Emerald City, The Bob Kuban Band, The Torquays, The Jay Barry Band, Phil Driscoll, and special guest Gary McClain of The Guild. The band will be playing many of
February 11, 2016
the Top Ten songs from 1959 to 1976. Some surprise guests are being planned as well!! The Coliseum Documentary Project has been in production for well over 5 years and was begun by Jim Marcacci, a retired teacher from Gillespie, who has been active with the Build Benld group since its beginnings. “When we started we didn’t realize what a monumental task the film would be” said Marcacci. “We decided early on that we had to tell the whole story from opening night in 1924 to the fire in 2011…and everything in between, for all of it’s 87 years. We decided to make the complete historical record of The Coliseum Ballroom. In just a very short time, maybe 30, 45 years from now, this will be all that is known about this wonderful, magical place and what happened there. We don’t think it should be forgotten.” Jim is the Director and Narrator for the documentary project and has teamed up with Writer and Emmy Award winning Producer John Ubben. They will be showing a special sneak preview of their upcoming documentary “Dance to the Music” set for general release this summer. The Doors open at 6pm, the band starts at 7pm and will play until 11pm. There will be a Cash Bar for beer and wine and set ups will be available (bring your own hard liquor). The tickets are $15 per person and are only available at the door that night. Dress up in poodle shirts, leather jackets, white tees and cool blue jeans, and get there early for this one time special event! Come join The BALLROOM BAND, playing the music that was popular when you were, as we remember The Coliseum Ballroom and Joyce Tarro.

Above and below are two looks at the Lake of the Ozarks' Polar Plunge.
Polar Plunge for Special Olympics planned at Lake of the Ozarks For The Edge Wi t h a v e r a g e t e m p e r a t u re s hovering in the mid-30s throughout the month of February, most people in Central Missouri are still wrapped up in coats, hats, scarves and gloves -- the whole works. There is, however, one exception. On Saturday, Feb. 27, many brave souls will buck the winter weather, wear funny costumes and bare more skin than what's typically advisable this time of year and charge into the frigid waters of the Lake of the Ozarks to raise money for Special Olympics Missouri during the 21st annual Polar Plunge. Crystal Schuster, development manager for Special Olympics Missouri and Polar Plunge organizer, believes it's a great event for a great cause and has personally made the plunge twice. "It's a really fun event. Cold, but a lot of fun. I think it's something everyone should try at least once," she says. The event takes place at Public Beach #2 in Lake of the Ozarks State Park and draws over 600 participants and an additional 1,500 spectators each year. Registration for the 2016 event begins at noon and runs until 1:50 p.m. Many people dress up for their plunge, so the event begins with a costume parade at 2 p.m., before all the participants run, walk or crawl into the chilly water at 2:30 p.m. Once the splashing and shivering has ceased, the fun continues with a Post-Plunge Party at TanTar-A Resort in Osage Beach from 4-7 p.m. The party will feature the presentation of the "Golden Plunger Awards" for the best costumes, a silent and live auction as well as food and drinks. The Post-Plunge Party is free for participants and costs $5 per guest. All proceeds from the party will go to Special

Olympics Missouri. A c c o rd i n g t o S c h u s t e r, t h e 2015 Lake of the Ozarks Polar Plunge raised $210,000 for Special Olympics Missouri and attracted a lot of people from around Central Missouri to the Lake. "Aside from being a unique and enjoyable fundraiser, it's also a fantastic way to bring different communities together for a great charity," Schuster adds. In total, there are 14 different Polar Plunges that take place
On the Edge of the Weekend
around the state throughout the month of February to generate funds for the organization's yearround program of sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. All participants fundraise for the Special Olympics prior to the plunge and prizes are awarded for top fundraisers. Last year's 14 plunges raised over $1 million and Schuster is confident they can match and hopefully exceed that total this year. To ensure that all attendees have

a safe and enjoyable day, Special Olympics takes every precaution, making sure to have lifeguards, divers, medical and emergency personnel, heaters, warming shelters and warming mechanisms on hand at every event. There also will be concession tents offering food, hot chocolate, coffee and other refreshments, as well as a souvenir tent selling Polar Plunge merchandise. While the Polar Plunge is considered the main attraction,
there also will be several other activities that accompany the event. On Friday, Feb. 26, there are two additional plunges: the PeeWee Plunge and the Super Plunge. The PeeWee Plunge, which features a heated tent and warm-water pool, begins at 6:30 p.m. and is for children 9 years and younger that also want to contribute. The Super Plunge, consisting of 24 dips in the Lake within a 24-hour period, is for fundraisers who want to go way above and beyond. Both the PeeWee and Super plunges take place at the boat dock at Public Beach #2 at Lake of the Ozarks State Park. On Saturday morning, before the Polar Plunge gets underway, there is the Polar Bear Strut 5K walk/ run, which begins and concludes at the City Hall building in Osage Beach. Registration for the 5K runs from 8-9:30 a.m., with the walk/run kicking off at 10 a.m. The Polar Plunge and Polar Bear Strut are projects of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Missouri and is proudly hosted by the Osage Beach Police Department. For more information on all the Polar Plunge activities at the Lake of the Ozarks and throughout the state, or for details on how to volunteer or donate, visit Special Olympics Missouri's website at www.somo. org. Many "plungers" and spectators build a winter weekend getaway around the Polar Plunge to take advantage of the off-season lodging rates and smaller crowds at the various year-around attractions and activities at the Lake. For other fun events, or for more information on all attractions and lodging and dining options at the "Best Recreational Lake" in the Nation, visit the the Lake of the Ozarks Convention and Visitor Bureau's award-winning website.
People People planner Museum exhibit focuses on terrorism in U.S.
Spies, Traitors and Saboteurs: Fear and Freedom in America, a special exhibition f ro m t h e I n t e r n a t i o n a l S p y M u s e u m , opened Feb.6 and runs through May 8 at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park. This 6,000 square-foot exhibit provides a historic perspective on acts of terror that have taken place on American soil. Spies, Traitors and Saboteurs reveals nine major events and periods in U.S. history when Americans were threated by enemies within its borders. It depicts who the government and public responded, illustrates the corresponding evolution of U.S. counterintelligence and homeland security efforts and examines the challenge of securing the nation without compromising the civil liberties upon which it was founded. • Aug. 24, 1814 – The City of Washington Captured and the While House Burned. D u r i n g t h e Wa r o f 1 8 1 2 , t h e c i t y o f Washington was captured and the White House, the U.S. Capitol and other major buildings were torched by British troops aided with information provided by a few Americans. • July 30, 1916 – Manhattan Hit by Massive Explosions in New York Harbor. German secret agents, aided by American collaborators, blew up a munitions depot in New York Harbor, showering Manhattan and the Statute of Liberty with shrapnel and debris. Acts of German sabotage on American soil like this contributed to America's entry into World War I and inspired the passage of the 1918 Espionage Act still in effect today and the growth of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. • June 2, 1919 – Anarchist Bombs Target
American Leaders. When the home of Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer was bomb by an anarchist and plots for more bombings were revealed, both the public and the government clamored for tighter law enforcement and more restrictive legislation for immigrants, resulting in the roundups, deportations and public outrage associated with the now infamous Palmer Raids. • Aug. 8, 1925 – 30,000 Ku Klux Klan Members Parade Down Pennsylvania Avenue. The nation's oldest hate group, the Ku Klux Klan, has risen three times in the nation's history. Each time, the group changed, evolving from small vigilante circles to huge violent organizations. They began inflicting terror on former slaves after the Civil War and grew into a politically powerful organization of 4 million that expanded its targets to include immigrants, Jews and Catholics in the 1920s. In the 1960s, they began attacking African Americans and civil rights workers. Today, a diminished Klan is only one among many white supremacist groups. • Dec. 7, 1941 – American Helps Japanese Pilot Terrorize Hawaiian Island After Pearl harbor. A Japanese pilot returning from the Pearl Harbor attack crash-landed on the Hawaiian Island of Nihau, and with support of a Japanese-American, took hostages and terrorized the community. The incident, little remembered today, perpetuated fears about Japanese Americans. Fears that ultimately led to the unprecedented incarceration of thousands. • April, 1945 – The Kremlin Launches One of the First Cold War Attacks Against the U.S. Near the end of World War II, the Kremlin harshly condemned American Communists for softening their commitment to a worldwide communist revolution.
The Communist Party of the United States snapped to action, ousting its moderate leader and re-establishing itself as a highly militant and subversive organization, fueling America's fears that American Communists would become Stalin's tool to overthrow the U.S. government. • M a rc h 1 , 1 9 7 1 – R a d i c a l G ro u p Explodes Bomb in the U.S. Capitol. Protests over the war in Vietnam and civil rights turned violent during the "days of rage" and extremist groups, such as the Weather Underground and Black Liberation Army, took action. • April 19, 1995 – Massive Bomb Destroys Federal Building in Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City bombing, the deadliest act of terrorism on U.S. soil in the 20th century, awakened Americans to threats posed by domestic extremists, especially the virulently anti-government right-wing groups. • Beyond Sept. 11th – Terrorism Today. In the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, initiatives by the U.S. government to root out terrorist elements in the country have irrevocably changed the lives of Americans. Spies, Traitors and Saboteurs supports these stories with historic photographs, themed environments, interactive displays, film, artifacts and video. Exhibit highlights include: • A timeline that traces over 80 acts of terror that have taken place in the U.S. from 1776 to today, including the Revolutionary War plot to kidnap George Washington, the vents of Bloody Kansas prior to the Civil War, John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry, the 1960s church bombings in the South and the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001. • APL Badge and ID Card (1917) – Carried by operatives of the American Protective
League who spied on their fellow Americans on behalf of the U.S. Justice Department during World War I. • Anarchist Globe Bomb (circa 1886) – Presented evidence in the trial of the men tried in connection with Chicago Haymarket riot (replica). • Ritual Klan Red Robe (circa 1965) – Worn by the Klan "Kladd," the elected officer who presided over the secret rituals and ceremonies of the Ku Klux Klan. • Klan "business cards" – Ominous warnings to innocent American families that their every move was being watched. • We a t h e r U n d e r g r o u n d V i d e o Presentation – Featuring an exclusive interview with ex-Weather Underground member Bernadine Dohrn, filmed for the exhibition. • Fragments of Planes that hit the World Tr a d e C e n t e r – R e c o v e re d f o l l o w i n g the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and used as evidence by the FBI in their ensuing investigation. • Visitor Polling Station – This unique computer interactive provides visitors the opportunity to express their own opinions on questions raised in the exhibition about how the nation has responded to the historical events presented. The questions were developed in consultation with the G a l l u p O rg a n i z a t i o n a n d a d d i t i o n a l historical questions can enable visitors to see how Americans responded to similar questions posed by the Gallup Poll at that time in history. Spies, Traitors and Saboteurs: Fear and Freedom in America is a creation of the International Spy Museum. It will be on display at the Missouri History Museum through May 8. Admission is free. People People planner MoBOT to host Orchid Show
Journey into an orchid-filled w o r l d a n d l e a r n m o re a b o u t these amazing plants during the 2016 Orchid Show, “Where Wild Things Grow.” The Orchid Show runs Feb. 6 to March 27, 2016. At every turn, orchids burst from the landscape with bright, bold colors. Approximately 500 orchids are on display at any one time, including Cattleya, Laelia, Encyclia, Oncidium and Paphiopedilum along with many other varieties. Spanning a wide range of sizes, colors and scents, these orchids are displayed as t hey w o u l d be f o u n d i n t h e i r natural habitats, with terrestrial orchids at ground level and e p i p h y t i c o rc h i d s s u s p e n d e d atop tree branches. Hundreds of other tropical plants and ferns help set the verdant scene. This year ’s Orchid Show offers visitors the chance to learn more a b o u t t h e h a b i t a t s o f o rc h i d s and how they adapt to changing environments. The Missouri Botanical Garden’s work including research, discovery, conservation and restoration of orchids will be presented with interpretation encompassed in the beautiful display. Orchids are found on every continent of the world except A n t a rc t i c a , w i t h t h e g re a t e s t diversity found in the tropics. Most tropical orchids grow on other plants and derive m o i s t u re a n d n u t r i e n t s f o r m the air. Orchids found in more temperate regions are terrestrial, growing out of the ground rather than on other plants. Some orchids grow on long vines, and in a variety of conditions including deserts and rain forests. Orchids are valued by collectors because of their beauty which has led to some s p e c i e s b e c o m i n g e n d a n g e re d due to over-collecting in the wild. The Garden works diligently to protect those at-risk species though conservation and recovery programs in the United States and around the world. Throughout the year, Missouri Botanical Garden horticulturists care for the collection behind the scenes in the private greenhouse r a n g e . There were about 12 people in the audience. But those in attendance thought there were worse ways to spend a Saturday afternoon, so Garrison Keillor and the APHC team went on to produce close to 500 live shows in the first 10 years alone. There were broadcasts from this venue and that, until March 4, 1978, when the show moved to The World Theater, a lovely, crumbling building that was o n e p l a s t e r c r a c k a w a y f ro m the wrecking ball. (Now fully renovated and renamed The Fitzgerald, it is the show’s home base.) In June of 1987, APHC ended for a while. Garrison thought it was a good idea at the time, but only two years later, the show was back, based in New York and called American Radio Company of the Air. But there’s no place like home. So in 1992, it was back to Minnesota and, soon after, back to the old name:A Prairie Home Companion. "The Forest"
The January movie has long had a reputation for being among the worst that Hollywood has to offer, as though everyone collectively acknowledges that they need a month to catch up on the glut of prestige offerings and awards hopefuls that hit at the end of December. There are always exceptions of course, but unfortunately "The Forest," a rotten horror film about twin sisters and the spooky Japanese woods where people go to kill themselves, is not one of them. It's rife with unbearable dialogue, cheap jump scares, and far too familiar imagery which makes the whole experience instantly forgettable. The story starts when Sara (Natalie Dormer), a young, wealthy professional living with a blandly handsome husband (Eoin Macken), discovers that her expat twin sister has disappeared in a forest in Japan. This isn't any forest, though. It's Aokigahara, also known as the suicide forest. Everyone she talks to assures her that her sister is definitely dead by now. But Sara knows better. In "The Forest" being a twin means that you have a spidey sense that your other half is around and living. There's a buzz, or something, and one time when Jess (also played by Dormer) took too many pills, the hum stopped. That's Sara knew something was wrong and knew to call the police to check on her. Fine, whatever. So Sara hops on a plane to Japan to search for Jess in the spooky suicide forest. Her dreams and eventually visions get creepier the closer she gets. There some elderly Japanese women around to warn her not to go into the forest, too — it's haunted by the spirits of the dead, she's too sad, and it's too dangerous. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "disturbing thematic content and images." RUNNING TIME: 95 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: A half star out of four.
"Lady in the Van"
There a re coz y, i n n ocu ou s p l e a su re s t o Nicholas Hytner's adaption of Alan Bennett's "The Lady in the Van," but chief among them is watching two grand old talents — Maggie Smith and Bennett, himself — operating firmly in their self-created wheel houses. S m i t h p l a y s t h e o r n e r y v a g r a n t M a r y S h e p h e rd who one day turns up in her dilapidated van on the playwright's North London block, where she stubbornly remains for 15 years. After taking squalid turns parked in front of different neighbors, she's allowed by Bennett to settle in the driveway to his townhouse. She's a mysterious and cantankerous figure. Sharing her na me wi t h f ew, s h e e x p l a i n s t h a t s h e 's "in an incognito position, possibly." When not impinging on Bennett for a visit to the lavatory, she chases singing school children, paints her rundown van yellow and skulks around, a cranky ball of rags and plastic bags. There are hints of a past as a nun, as well as an old sin that haunts her. In short, Shepherd's irascible peculiarities are tailor made for Smith, who's given all manner of things at which to disgustfully wiggle her nose — the trademark power of Smith's that's no less potent as a foul homeless woman than as the dignified dowager of "Downton Abbey." She can condescend, magnificently, from any height. Smith played the role before in the 1999 play "The Lady in the Van," which was also directed by Hytner, a regular hand of Bennett movie adaptations ("The History Boys," ''The Madness of King George"). RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "a brief unsettling image." RUNNING TIME: 104 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Ride Along 2"
With the same brand of silliness and a bit more creativity than the original, "Ride Along 2"doesn't pretend to be anything more than what it is: a sequel designed to offer a second helping of exactly what worked the first time around. The original "Ride Along" topped the box office for three straight weeks when it opened in January of 2014, collecting $150 million returns on its modest $25 million budget. It focused on Ben (Kevin Hart), an excitable video-game junkie and wannabe cop, and his attempts to impress his disinterested future brother-in-law, James (Ice Cube), a hardnosed police detective. Hart is goofy and slapstick; Cube is stern and annoyed. Producers reprise the formula and return to many of the original film's artists for the sequel, including screenwriters Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi and director Tim Story. This time around, Ben is a fresh graduate of the police academy a week away from his wedding to Angela (Tika Sumpter). He's still trying to impress her brother, James, who still can't stand him. At Angela's urging, James reluctantly agrees to bring Ben on a police mission from Atlanta to Miami, where James is on the hunt for a suspicious hacker, AJ (Ken Jeong). AJ is linked to a case James is working in Atlanta, but he's also connected to a major Miami drug lord, Antonio Pope (Benjamin Bratt), who has been masquerading as a philanthropist.RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sequences of violence, sexual content, language and some drug material. RUNNING TIME: 101 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
"The 5th Wave"
One major reason that young-adult fiction is so alluring — when done well — is that it gives youngsters such a fulfilling scenario of independence from those older adults in their lives who always think they're smarter and stronger. That scenario is front and center in "The 5th Wave," where every adult is either evil, inhuman (literally), or nice but helpless. It's truly up to the young — make that the young, buff and goodlooking — to save humanity. But if this movie, starring Chloe Grace Moretz as the latest plucky teen to fight for our species, performs its appointed task with efficiency, it does little more. Yes, the winsome Moretz is a fine, if one-note, reluctant heroine (the film's based on Rick Yancey's best-selling novel, and directed by J Blakeson). And she's surrounded by more than one appealing young man (the YA action-film rulebook seems to dictate at least two, so we can have a triangle.) But the script has more than a few lines that should have been sent directly to rewrite, and there's a nagging feeling throughout that we've sorta seen it all before. Not that this will deter fans of Yancey's book, which is the beginning of a trilogy, meaning we're sure to see more of Moretz's Cassie in years to come. She is, when we first meet her, a pretty perfect Ohio high schooler. Yes, she goes to a party and drinks beer and crushes on a cute football player named Ben. But then she goes home early and sings her little brother Sam to sleep. The next day, life changes forever. A giant alien craft appears in the sky. For days, the Others, as the aliens are known, don't make a move. Then come the four waves. First all power and technology is knocked out; planes and cars crash. Then giant tsunamis are unleashed, killing billions. Then there's crippling disease, transmitted by birds and killing countless more. The fourth wave brings attackers to Earth in unexpected form, all building up to the climactic fifth wave. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America "for violence and destruction, some sci-fi thematic elements, language and brief teen partying." RUNNING TIME: 12 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"The Finest Hours"
Waves of water and nostalgia wash over the drenched and drippy "The Finest Hours," a Norman Rockwell painting tossed into stormy CGI seas. The disaster drama, directed by Craig Gillespie ("Lars and the Real Girl," ''Million Dollar Arm"), is a movie of curious contrasts: an unabashedly old-fashioned and overwhelmingly vanilla tale of awe-shucks-ing, double-dating 1950s seamen, told with the modern 3-D effects of your average end-of-the-world movie. It's about the 1952 rescue mission — a true story — of a fourman boat of Coast Guardsmen sent from Cape Cod to save the crew of the USS Pendleton, an oil tanker that a brutal winter storm has broken in half off the coast of Nantucket. "The Finest Hours" provides more working-class New Englanders bobbing in churning nor'easter currents for those who have been patiently waiting for another wave to catch since 2000's "The Perfect Storm." Here again is that formula of maritime adventure and Massachusetts accents (some believable, some that sink). This one has an Affleck. Playing the assistant engineer Ray Sybert on the Pendleton is Casey Affleck, who moodily skulks over pipes and valves in the engine room for much of the film. More knowing than his fellow shipmen, he attempts to convince them how to steer what's left of the tanker to safety. On land is Chris Pine's Bernie Webber, a timid, do-gooding Guardsman stationed in Chatham. The setting could hardly be more innocent; early scenes show Bernie's courtship of the red-haired Miriam (the radiant Holliday Grainger): seeds of sentimentality to fuel the action to come. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "intense sequences of peril." RUNNING TIME: 117 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
"Kung Fu Panda 3"
If you're one of those people — and I'm with you — who roll your eyes when handed a pair of 3D glasses at the multiplex, wondering if all this rigmarole is REALLY necessary, then take heart: The lovely, color-popping visuals in "Kung Fu Panda 3" are well worth those darned glasses. And the evocative DreamWorks Animation visuals are accompanied by just enough heart, witty dialogue and kidfriendly humor — anything about gorging on dumplings, for example — to make this an all-around extremely satisfying third installment in the popular series. Like a well-made dumpling, it's not too heavy but not too light, has the right amount of spice, and leaves one with some appetite for the next time. Much of the appeal of the "Panda" films is, of course, the starry cast of voices, and it's fun to try to figure out who they are, rather than informing yourself beforehand (but if you do, stop reading here). Of course, you'll already know that Jack Black is back, and in fine shape, as Po, our rotund panda hero and reluctant Dragon Warrior. Black's goofy persona is perfect for lines like, when he discovers other pandas don't use chopsticks to slow them down: "I always KNEW I wasn't eating up to my full potential!" That was my personal favorite, but the kids in the audience were overwhelmingly partial to this one, hurled mockingly by the overmatched Po at his taunting, evil opponent: "Chitty, chitty, chat, chat. Chat, chat, chat." The film, directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson and Alessandro Carloni, begins in the spirit realm, where Oogway, the ancient kung fu master (and tortoise), is suddenly attacked by the villainous bull Kai, a former friend. Kai has been spending the last few centuries collecting all the "chi" power from kung fu masters and storing it in amulets. RATEDL PG by the Motion Picture Association of America "for martial arts action and some mild rude humor." RUNNING TIME: Running time: 95 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

It's just when they're making their wedding plans that the storm sets in, news of the tanker's distress spreads and Eric Bana's ill-informed commanding officer dispatches Bernie into the freezing surf to search for survivors. His most notable companion is a near-silent sailor played by the arresting Ben Foster, who appears to have made a bet to say as few words as possible throughout the film. The central foe to the rescue is the crushing waves at the sand bar ("Tha Bahhh") that Bernie must miraculously navigate. Parallels between Bernie and Ray mount
as the film toggles between them; both are intelligent workers — card-carrying members of "the greatest generation" — thrown into impossible situations by foolhardy supervisors. With wet bangs hanging over their determined faces, they brave the storm with ingenuity and gumption, gritting their way through sheets of cold rain. "The Finest Hours," written by Scott Silver, Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson, has the feeling of a movie that's been stripped down to its bare clichés. That's not an altogether bad thing. The film's lean, classical simplicity is also its greatest asset. Gillespie's movie lacks even the slightest pretension and features only the occasional flourish (notably a tracking shot from shipman to shipman as a message is relayed from the deck to the engine room).
Short subject films get high marks By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge Everyone loves the movies. Slightly fewer people enjoy a good film. Very few, save for a small window in February each year, enjoy short subject films. That's when the Oscars make their nominations for the shorts and Landmark Theatres rolls out their annual package of animated/live action/ documentary reels for the general public. That's how I spent my Sunday this past weekend, at the Tivoli Theatre in University C i t y, e n j o y i n g s e v e r a l o f t h e highly commendable works from the last year - all told in spans ranging from five to thirty minutes. I'm here to tell you about some of the absolute gems
that I discovered. The Animated Shorts include a Pixar clip called "Sanjay's Super Te a m " , a w i d e l y d i s t r i b u t e d cartoon that played before all showings of "The Good Dinosaur" over this holiday s e a s o n . Yo u n g S a n j a y w o u l d rather watch his superhero TV show that participate in h i s f a t h e r ' s a rc h a i c re l i g i o u s obligations to the Hindu faith. During some bonding time together, though, he imagines himself at war against evil s p i r i t s a l o n g s i d e Vi s h n u a n d Ganesha and the other major deities of that belief system. It's a good tale about togetherness that will keep younger audiences engaged. My favorite of the animated s h o r t s , w h i c h a re c o l l e c t i v e l y
inferior this year to their live action counterparts, was "Bear Sto ry". In it, P ap a Be ar us e s his mechanical wind-up toy to t e l l t h e s t o r y o f h i s t ro u b l e d background to children on the street for a small pittance. His tale begins with a circus police h i t s q u a d b re a k i n g d o w n t h e door to the family home and kidnapping Papa in front of his family, forcing him into chains and a life of showbiz. Once Papa is able to escape, he returns to find his family missing and builds the toy diorama to help ease his concerns. Heavy stuff. Also nominated: "Prologue", t h e u p r o a r i o u s " Wo r l d o f Tomorrow", and "We Can't Live Without Cosmos". On the live action front, I was blown away by a pair of the films.
The dangerous "Day One" tells about an Army interpreter on her first day in Afghanistan when she learns the wrong way to mess with the bases' co-ed shower schedule, how to survive a near-miss in a roadside bombing incident, and is forced to deliver the baby of a suspected bomb-making insurgent. It was powerful. My personal favorite short of the day was a tense German thriller called "Everything Will Be Okay" in which a divorced father spends his last day of shared custody of his young daughter secretly planning to abduct her and flee the country for the Philippines. It's not readily apparent what his intentions are as he takes her toy shopping and out to the bumper car fair, but I caught on quickly. So does the girl, a young performer

who nailed the role of a frightened child anxious to please both her mom and her day while trying to figure out in what world she belongs now that her folks are split up. I was left reeling - much like that poor eight-year-old - when the lights came up after that one. Also nominated: "Ave Maria", "Shok", and the charming "Stutterer". The Oscar Nominated Animated and Live Action Short Films are not collectively rated. They vary in content including language, violence, adult themes, and nudity. Caution should be taken when exposing children to them. The combined running time with intermission is 240 minutes. I give the overall program three and a half stars out of four.

Religion Religion briefs Pastor who was imprisoned in Iran returns home to Idaho
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — An American pastor who was imprisoned for nearly four years in Iran has returned home to Boise, Idaho. KBOI-TV reports that Saeed Abedini (sah-EED' ah-beh-DEE'nee) landed Tuesday afternoon on a private plane. Abedini was one of four Americans released in Iran under a negotiated prisoner exchange on Jan. 16. The 35-year-old Abedini spent the previous five days with his parents and sister at a secluded retreat in Asheville, North Carolina. His wife, Naghmeh Abedini, and their children originally planned to meet him at the retreat operated by the Rev. Franklin Graham. Graham's spokesman, Mark DeMoss, told the Idaho Statesman newspaper that the plans had changed, with Abedini returning to Boise to reunite with his family. The Boise man was detained in Iran for compromising national security, presumably because of Christian proselytizing. He was sentenced in 2013 to eight years in prison.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the American Bar Association is reviewing a complaint from the activist group FreeBYU. The group is also appealing a university-wide decision from a different accrediting group, which found no violation on the university's part in similar complaints on the religious-freedom issue. A BYU spokeswoman says the university responded to a request for information from the bar association a few months ago. The law school's last accreditation review was during the 2011-2012 school year. The next formal review is scheduled for the 2018-2019 year.
Vatican: Iran must join fight against terrorism
VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis has told Iran's president that Tehran should play a key role in stopping the spread of terrorism as the country tries to improve its image following an agreement on its nuclear program. The pontiff warmly clasped the hand of President Hassan Rouhani at the Vatican Tuesday in the first official call paid on a pontiff by an Iranian president since 1999. They held 40 minutes of private talks before Rouhani met with other top Vatican officials. The Holy See says the "cordial" talks also stressed common spiritual values.

Grand jury indicts leader behind Planned Parenthood videos
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A Texas grand jury investigating Planned Parenthood has indicted two anti-abortion activists who covertly shot videos of the organization. Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson says Center for Medical Progress founder David Daleiden (duhLY'-dihn) was indicted on a felony charge of tampering with a governmental record and a misdemeanor count related to purchasing human organs. Another activist was also indicted on a charge of tampering with a governmental record. Anderson says the grand jury cleared Planned Parenthood of any wrongdoing. The Center for Medical Progress is the anti-abortion group that covertly shot videos of Planned Parenthood officials discussing the sale of aborted fetuses for research. At last week's Evangelicals for Life conference in Washington, a Baptist leader asked Daleiden if posing as an organ buyer to obtain the interviews amounted to lying. Daleiden responded that he believes "the purpose of undercover work is actually to serve the truth and to bring the truth to greater clarity."

Preceding these shows, Shawn will play his biggest New York City concert to date, headlining Radio City Music Hall on Saturday, March 5th, which sold-out in under 5 minutes when tickets went on-sale this past fall. Mendes will appear at The Fox Theatre in St. Louis Saturday, August 6th, Tickets are $40 and are on sale online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-534-1111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. “I Know What You Did Last Summer, the RIAA gold single duet by Shawn and Camila Cabello of Fifth Harmony, has gone Top 15 at Pop Radio, Top 10 on iTunes, Top 20 on the U.S. Spotify chart, and Top 30 on Spotify’s Global Top 50. The video for “IKWYDLS is currently past 35 million YouTube

When Handwritten, now double platinum with a total of 2 million adjusted sales, entered Soundscan at #1 last year, it made Shawn the youngest artist in nearly five years to chart a # 1 a l b u m o n t h e B i l l b o a rd 200. “IKWYDLS follows up Shawn’s run of consecutive hit singles “Life of The Party (RIAA platinum), “Something Big (RIAA platinum), and “Stitches (RIAA 4x-platinum). “Stitches went to #1 on US Pop radio, nearing pole position at the Hot AC formats and
has become a certifiable airplay and sales smash around the world. This was not the first time that Nicole Harris hurt her children, this was just the first time that she got caught. Her life here in Edwardsville was very different from what her defense attorney want the jury to believe. If the truth ever gets out, she will definately be convicted again. I understand that an appeal is automatically granted in first degree murder trials, but this was one time that a life sentence should have been handed down. POSTED BY CARING AT 6:04 PM

the sheer beauty of the music that springs forth from his imagination into glorious song. Wilson brings this ingenious vision to his own compositions, as well as to those for which he has collaborated, weaving a lush, vibrant tapestry of intricately nuanced vocal harmonies and instrumental arrangements for himself, his bandmates and others. Wilson began his career as a teenaged founding member of The Beach Boys, who signed with Capitol Records in July 1962 and released their first album, Surfin’ Safari, that same year. The band’s initial surf-rock focus was soon broadened to include other themes. Wi l s o n ’ s i n n o v a t i v e v o c a l and instrumental arrangements for major hits including “I Get A ro u n d , “ C a l i f o r n i a G i r l s , “Wouldn’t It Be Nice, “God Only Knows, and the No. 1 smash “Good Vibrations made The Beach Boys America’s preeminent band of the 1960s.

From x-rays to canvas and local area hospitals – as a Diagnostic Radiologist with Dugan Radiology Associates; with Memorial Hospital in Chester, Illinois as a Staff Radiologist since 1996, and Radiology Chief since 2006; as a Staff Radiologist since 1996 with Sparta Community Hospital in Sparta, Illinois, and with St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese, Illinois since 1996. Prywitch is currently a member of both the Radiological Society of North America and the American College of Radiology. On the artistic side, he’s a past member of the St. Louis Watercolor Society. Brett has had several articles published and media profiles featuring his unique x-ray art, including the St. Louis Jewish Light, St. Louis Magazine, the AARP Bulletin and KTVI FOX2; and his original artwork was featured on the covers of radiology industry publications RadioGraphics and Journal of Radiology Case Reports. “While I’ve received accolades for my artwork in the past, I am very excited to be a part of the St. Louis Artists’ Guild show as my first professional exhibition as an artist,” notes Prywitch. He adds, “I hope this is the first of many shows to come in the future!” For additional details about Dr. Brett Prywitch’s works of x-ray art, please visit his website at www.brettprywitch.com, or contact the artist at 618-407-5906 or via email at bprywitch@aol. com. rett Prywitch, M.D.’s job for the past 20 years as a Radiologist is to look inside the human body, to observe, study, analyze and find evidence of abnormalities, diseases or compromised organs, tissue and bones.
But Dr. Brett Prywitch sees much more than just those medical conditions when he reviews x-rays, CT scans or MRIs. He also observes the beauty in the human form, and he can envision creative ways to convey his artistic inspiration. For several years, Brett Prywitch has taken that artistic inspiration and turns radiological images into a new art form by utilizing medical imagery such as x-rays, CT and MRI scans. Prywitch explains his unique creative perspective, noting, “The ability to peer inside a human body without the laying of hands is truly a miracle of medical science. I create imagery utilizing medical images such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and plain X-rays.” He continues, “Having a substantial knowledge of the body's intricate form and function, my experience as a radiologist provides me with the unique opportunity to view humanity from a different perspective. The human body, as viewed with modern imaging technology, contains many beautiful and intricate structures that allow a vast universe of artistic possibilities.” Prywitch has always been interested in art, particularly in photography, watercolors and sketching. His foray into digital art came when he was introduced to Photo Shop by one of his children, approximately five years ago. Since then, Brett has continued to use his unique talent to create beautifully interesting and visually compelling works of digital art inspired by his professional experience and knowledge and the images Brett’s collection of radiologically-inspired works of art are featured within the exhibition “Clearly Human II”, which is currently on display at the St. Louis Artists’ Guild Gallery, located in Clayton at the corner of Jackson and Forsythe (in the old Famous-Barr building) through February 27, 2016. Although Prywitch’s work has been displayed in several professional settings, this is the first time Brett’s art has been accepted into a highly regarded and professional juried art show. Encouraged by his acceptance into the “Clearly Human II” Show, Brett is in the process of applying to several other regional art shows and festivals. Dr. Prywitch’s other arts installations, exhibitions and lectures include venues, medical facilities and corporations from across the country:

Nancy Spirtas Kranzberg Gallery: Frank Trankina: Superheroes and Night Stories March 4 – May 21, 2016 Chicago-based painter Frank Trankina explores the duality of still life and storytelling in exquisitely painted scenes that are created with collections of anthropomorphic objects and vintage figurines and toys. A selection of gouache drawings also explore the process and materials of artmaking and the spaces in between. Though Trankina’s works allude to Old Master still life paintings, they stand firmly within our contemporary world – and often refer to human relationships and all of their idiosyncrasies. Trankina received his M.F.A. degree in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and is a Professor of Art at Northern Illinois University. The exhibit is sponsored in part by Barbara and Arthur McDonnell. The Ann Lee and Wilfred Konneker Gallery: Susan Stang: reAPPEARANCES March 4 – April 30, 2016 Showcasing a selection of eight works from St. Louis artist Susan Stang’s recently published book,
reAPPEARANCES, this sequence of 52 photographs take the viewer on a journey through the uncanny coherence of the look of the world. Shot using a small digital toy camera with a plastic lens, this series includes photographs taken in a number of countries and cities. Replete with numerous iconic sites and symbols, from the Empire State Building and Tower of Pisa, to Marilyn Monroe, baseball, gondolas and drive-thru wedding chapels, the variety of locations makes even more apparent the serendipitous connections between different places and cultures. P u b l i c Wo r k s h o p : Tu e s d a y, March 29, 2016, 6 p.m. Susan Stang: My Journey to reAPPEARANCES. Photographer Susan Stang will trace her experiences with book publication and crowdfunding in this free workshop. The artist will discuss topics such as what makes a project a book, how a successful crowd-funding campaign is designed, and what the challenges of pre-production and marketing are when publishing independently. A reception follows the presentation. Admission is free, but reservations are required. To reserve contact Paula Lincoln at 314-533-9900 x37, or email plincoln@thesheldon.org.

Above, a 12-oz. New York strip steak, French fries and homemade bread from Maverick Steaks & Spirits in Litchfield. Below, a giant salad constructed at the salad bar.
Maverick Steaks & Spirits in Litchfield By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge Anyone who has driven on I-55 in Illinois knows how boring it can be and I don't know about you, but when I get bored I get hungry. Well, I found the perfect answer to that boredom and those hunger pangs — Maverick Steaks & Spirits in Litchfield. Maverick is located at 201 Ohren Dr. in Litchfield, not far from Exit 52 off of I-55. It has been serving Litchfield and its visitors from the busy interstate since 1983. The concept is pretty simple, Maverick offers a buffet style dinner and serves steaks to boot, kind of reminiscent of Ponderosa or Bonanza, but it boasts one key addition, a separate bar area. Another characteristic of Maverick may be its best though, it's cheap. My dinner partner Steve and I visited on a Monday night. We were cruising I-55 and thought a steak dinner would be the perfect break from the monotony of ogling at open fields. Maverick really did have a Ponderosa type feel when we entered. You walk in and go to the register to order, get your plate and prepare to dig in. I went with the 12-oz. New York strip steak, which came with homemade bread and an order of French fries. I also got access to the salad buffet, the dinner buffet and the dessert buffet. Steve ordered the 5-oz. sirloin, homemade bread and a baked pot at o a n d got a l l t h e e x t r a amenities, too. The first stop was the salad bar. We both loaded up with salad. There were plenty of veggies to throw on, as well as diced ham and chicken. I topped mine off with bacon bits of course. Every since I was a kid I've e n j o y e d c re a t i n g g i a n t s a l a d

monstrosities from salad bars. I probably wouldn't categorize them as healthy by the time I'm done with them though. Barely into my salad the steak arrived. It looked larger than a 12-oz. slab of meat for sure. I ordered it medium and I was happy with the way it was cooked. I've
On the Edge of the Weekend
shied away from ordering medium well at places, because a lot of time it comes out a little tough. On the other hand, I don't like my steak mooing at me, so medium scares me at some places. At Maverick it was a perfect shade of pink and nice and tender, just the way I imagined it. The steak had a great taste,
February 11, 2016
succulent as heck, and like I said, very tender. It isn't the best steak I've had in my life, but for the price you definitely can't can't go wrong. My bill was all of $20 after tax and ordering a drink. The homemade bread was also very good. It was extremely soft and had a somewhat sweet taste to it.
The fries weren't bad either and they were pretty large to boot. I hit the buffet to test out a couple of items, too. I tried a little bit of the fettucine alfredo and a couple pieces of fried chicken. Both were pretty good also, but the steak was by far the star. Steve had no complaints either. He scarfed down his sirloin and hit the dessert buffet for some goodies. T h e re a re p l e n t y o f o t h e r options at Mavericks. One that is recommended by the chef is the Memphis burger. It's a half-pound burger, lightly seasoned, smothered in the house barbecue sauce and topped with American cheese, strips of bacon and an onion ring. The Bourbon steak sandwich caught my attention. It's a tender sirloin steak with grilled onions, Swiss cheese, lightly brushed with Bourbon sauce and served on a homemade roll. There's also the Bourbon glazed filet medallions served on a bed of rice. That sounds pretty delicious. Maverick offers plenty more in the way of steaks, sandwiches, fish, even horseshoes and pony shoes. Check out their website at www. mavericksteaksandspirits.com. I didn't get to partake in any fun at the bar, but I did dip my head in to check it out. It's a small bar area, but offers some domestic beers, a couple craft options and a good variety of wines. As for the restaurant area, it's extremely large, like what you find at your classic buffet restaurant. It was Steve's idea to visit Maverick and I applaud him. I didn't know this little Litchfield jewel was there. It's not the fanciest place in the world, but it's a great place to hang your hat for awhile and get a quality, cheap meal when you're ready to get off the interstate and, of course, you gotta eat.
