Carats for the Cure Hudson Jewelers helps Allison’s Friends of Hope
By BILL TUCKER btucker@edwpub.net Just as Allison’s Friends of Hope grows, so do the events supporting it. O n S u n d a y, H u d s o n J e w e l e r s i n Edwardsville opened on a day off to host a designer Trunk Show with proceeds of sales benefitting Allison’s Friends of Hope. The foundation was founded in 2004 as Friends of Hope by Allison Cassens. She passed away, at the age of 33, a victim of colon cancer. Her parents, Linda and Allen Cassens, picked up the cause, added their daughter’s name to Friends of Hope and have been raising funds to find a cure for cancer since. Saturday night was the foundation’s sixth annual Gala Dinner and Auction. For the last three years, Hudson Jewelers
February 18, 2010
has piggybacked their Carats for the Cure event on the day after the dinner. Those who missed this past weekends events can still make a difference as Hudson Jewelers offers plastic bags to anyone willing to donate any type of gold jewelry - a half-pair of earrings, a broken chain or something that is no longer in style. Lisa Nielsen, manager of Hudson Jewelers in Edwardsville, said her business formed its ties to Allison’s Friends of Hope Foundation after an eye-opening visit three years ago. “Mrs. Cassens came to request a donation in November, 2007,” Nielsen said. “When we read more about it, we appreciated that the money stays here and that there’s zero administrative costs. Then we found a way to we could contribute.” That way is the Carets for the Cure promotion, which also takes place in October
as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Allison’s Friends of Hope is tied to the Warren Billhartz Cancer Center at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, which is an affiliate of the Mary Crowley Research Center in Dallas, Texas. Both institutions focus on new types of cancer treatments, according to Linda Cassens. One such treatment uses Tag serums, which treat only cancerous cells. Radiation and chemotherapy, the most common treatments, kill cancerous and healthy cells at the same time. But such cutting-edge approaches require funding and Allison’s Friends of Hope is doing what it can to provide support. “It takes money to do this,” Linda Cassens said. “it’s very important for the public to know we’re doing this.”
So events like Carats for the Cure help spread the word – and raise funding. “Hudson’s have been supporting us emotionally and financially to help researchers develop serums,” Cassens said. “I think that’s wonderful.” And such efforts are exactly what Allison Cassens had in mind as her passion to find a cure for this deadly disease led to the establishment of the foundation that now carries her name. “Allison’s legacy was to help others so no would have to suffer like she did,” Linda Cassens said. “The community is carrying on her legacy.” Next on the schedule is the Allison’s Friends of Hope Golf Outing, which will be conducted July 23 at Sunset Hills Country Club. People GIR announces drag race schedule
For racers and spectators alike, the 2010 Gateway International Raceway drag strip schedule provides a full season of great events, including more Bracket Championship Series races and more Outlaw All-Stars races. The season kicks off March 6-7 with the NHRA chassis certification, with the first race of the year being the annual Icebreaker on Saturday, March 20. The first Midnight Madness Presented by Monster Energy Drink is the following Friday, March 26. A total of seven stand-alone races for the Gateway Bracket Championship Series have been scheduled, with Monster Mopar also counting towards bracket points. One of the new changes for 2010 has been the inclusion of several Thursday night slick tire test-andtunes. “Our NHRA Drags Street Legal Style Presented by AAA runs with our Street Car Shootout Series and our Doc’s Harley-Davidson Quick Street Bike Series and we heard from our racers and spectators that they wanted an additional night for slicks,” said GIR Drag Strip Manager Rich Schaefer. A popular addition to last year’s schedule was the Outlaw All-Stars, a day of heads-up racing focusing on racing for the trophy with the fastest car going to the Winner ’s Circle. After hearing from the fans in the offseason, eight OAS races have been scheduled for this year. “We started the Outlaw All-Stars after our track historian, Bret Kepner, did some research and created a format that would be compelling to both the racers and the fans,” Schaefer said. “We at Gateway and certainly the drag racing community feel Bret did a great job with the program and we hope to improve on the series in 2010.” Most of GIR’s bigger events, such as Muscle Car Reunion and Nostalgia Drags, MegaBuck$, and Monster Mopar, have retained their usual dates. One big change, however, has been the moving of the All Harley Drags Association event. In the past, AHDRA’s brand of two-wheeled excitement ran in the spring, but due to weather issues, the three-day event has been moved to Sept. 24-26. This is a much-anticipated tour that garners great reviews. Last year Terry Perkins of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch called the concert “an evening of classic music that certainly set a high standard for any other performances this Mardi Gras season.” The Neville Brothers have played New Orleans rhythms and melodies for more than five decades. The group’s 1954 recording of Mardi Gras Mambo became a huge hometown hit and is one of the iconic songs frequently played during the New Orleans Mardi Gras. Aaron, Art, Cyril and Charles have had long careers as solo performers and as members of the group that bears their family name. The Neville Brothers has sold millions of records, including such hits as Tell It Like It Is, Fire On The Bayou and Fever. Ending the band’s five-year hiatus from
recording, The Neville Brothers’ 2008 recording, Walkin’ in the Shadow of Life, marks the welcome return of the group’s smoldering funk and R&B. Dr. John proudly stands alongside Louis Armstrong and Fats Domino as one of New Orleans’ all-time distinctive voices. His music is considered to be one of the most infectious sounds in both jazz and popular music. His many hits include Right Place Wrong Time and Iko Iko. Tickets for Mardi Gras Mambo featuring The Neville Brothers with Dr. John and The Lower 911 are $100 (Gold Circle), $65 and $45. They are available now at the Touhill Performing Arts Center Ticket Office; online at www.touhill.org; or by phone at 314.516.4949. QuickGlance Movie Reviews
“Avatar”
James Cameron’s 3-D epic has all the smack of a Film Not To Miss — a movie whose effects are clearly revolutionary, a spectacle that millions will find adventure in. But it nevertheless feels unsatisfying and somehow lacks the pulse of a truly alive film. The plot is a little like the American frontier circa the 1800s, only transposed to the year 2154 on the faraway moon Pandora, the home of Native Americanlike, aqua blue, 10-foot tall creatures called the Na’vi. Arriving are imperialistic humans to plunder, and scientists to study. Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) leads a team that explores in Na’vi bodies, avatars, controlled remotely. A sense of discovery — of Cameron’s digital world of Pandora, of the impressive techno-filmmaking — makes “Avatar” often thrilling. The environmentalist and anti-war messages resonate with contemporary troubles, but they also seem odd coming from such a swaggering behemoth of a movie. One senses Cameron’s zest lies in the battle, not in peace. With Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana. RATED: PG-13 for intense epic battle sequences and warfare, sensuality, language and some smoking. RUNNING TIME: 161 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and half stars out of four.
“Edge of Darkness”
It’s been seven years since his last film, but Mel Gibson is still playing martyr. After righteously battling injustice in “Lethal Weapon,” “The Patriot,” “Payback” and others, Gibson plays Thomas Craven, a humble Boston police detective and single father to a 24-year-old daughter, Emma (Bojana Novakovic). When Emma is killed, Craven sets out to find the killer, a journey that leads him into a complex web of corporate and political cover-up. Hellbent in a beige raincoat, he attacks with little self-regard. Now 54, Gibson is grayer and grimmer. The wildness and fire that once exploded unpredictably from Gibson is dimmed after several hard years for the actor. But he fits well in “Darkness.” Some might reasonably swear off films with Gibson, but there aren’t a lot of actors making movies that try to bring contemporary rage to the multiplexes. Perhaps, though, crusades needn’t always be a bloodbath. With Ray Winstone as a weary, philosophical government operative and Danny Huston as a slick CEO. RATED: R for strong bloody violence and language.

RUNNING TIME: 117 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
“From Paris with Love”
As 2008’s “Taken” turned Liam Neeson into an action star, director Pierre Model again attempts the feat with two distinctly un-tough actors: John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The Rock needn’t worry about his day job. With a shaved head, thick goatee and a leather jacket, Travolta resembles a biker from Soho. He’s Charlie Wax, a brutal but chatty CIA agent. Meyers is James Reese, an aspiring spy who’s teamed with Wax in a race to prevent a terrorist plot. Rhys, more hollow-cheeked model than gun-totting tough, plays Reese as quickly adapting to the carnage — he’s from a hard New York neighborhood, after all, he boasts. (One foresees South Bronx crowds cackling in the theaters.) The bodies pile up, but “Paris” never feels like anything more than action movie dress-up. RATED: R for bloody violence throughout, drug content, pervasive language and brief sexuality. RUNNING TIME: 95 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.
“Frozen”
This thinnest of horror tales asks the question, what would you do if you were stranded on a ski lift, forgotten and left to freeze after the resort staff goes home? It’s an utter bore watching as writer-director Adam Green struggles and fails to keep his one-note idea interesting for the length of a feature film. There’s maybe enough material here for a short film, so Green pads things with a lot of dreary scenes of chattering teeth and chattering characters as Emma Bell, Shawn Ashmore and Kevin Zegers share thoughts of their plight and the odd childhood anecdote as frostbite sets in. Since three people shivering on a ski lift would be about as action-packed as “Waiting for Godot,” Green also adds wolves — you know, the sort of ravenous wolves that hang out at all the finer New England ski resorts waiting for dalliers on the slopes that they can hunt down and devour. Need we say more? RATED: R for some disturbing images and language. RUNNING TIME: 93 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out
of four.
“Dear John”
Yes, there’s a character named John and, yes, he’s a soldier who, sure enough, receives dozens of letters from his sweetheart back home, including one emotionally wrought missive that begins with “Dear John” and ends with him vowing to permanently switch to e-mail. And because this earnest romance comes from a Nicholas Sparks novel, death and disappointment hover over the events, ready to strike — and strike often. For Sparks, grief is good. Maybe greed, too, given the number of times he has recycled the same themes. Here John (Channing Tatum) and Savannah (Amanda Seyfried) fall in love in the spring of 2001 and promise their lives to each other. But then 9/11 happens and John, a Special Forces soldier, has to decide between love and country. The leads click effortlessly during the movie’s romance section, but then comes the inevitable loss and disappointment, events that seem overwrought even by Sparks’ operatic standards. RATED: PG-13 for some sensuality and violence. RUNNING TIME: 102 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“Terribly Happy”
This, the Danish foreign film submission to the Oscars, is all moodiness, midnight black comedy and noir mystery. Director Hendrick Ruben Genz transplants the familiar genre of city folk being stuck in a country backwater to a small, sparsely populated village on the plains of southern Denmark. A police officer, Robert Hanson (Jakob Cedergren), arrives from Copenhagen and quickly chaffs with the shifty locals who have the habit of tossing those they don’t like in a bog on the outskirts of the town. Hanson soon makes enemies with the town tyrant, Jorgan (Kim Bodnia), while simultaneously making friends with his attractive, abused wife, Ingelise (Lene Maria Christensen). It would be a simple enough film if we were left to root for Hanson to outwit the crafty country bumpkins. But “Terribly Happy” throws several wrinkles into the old formula that reveal a much broader and cynical view of corruption. By the end, there’s no distance between city and country. Cinematographer Jorgen Johansson uses a cool, drab pallet to create the tense atmosphere. RATED: Unrated. RUNNING TIME: 100 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

Bell shines in “When in Rome” By JAKE COYLE Associated Press Of all the pretty faces and talented comedians to populate “When in Rome,” the funniest co-star is the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Yes, there at the center of this unabashedly formulaic romantic comedy is Frank Lloyd Wright’s revered New York landmark. After it was inelegantly shot to bits in “The International” last year, it now suffers the indignity of serving as a backdrop — with Cai Guo-Qiang’s “exploding cars” floating above — to a scene with a soundtrack by Jason Mraz’s “Kicking With You.” The Guggenheim might want a new agent. But if the museum is miscast, the leads of “When in Rome” — Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel — are more fitting. The film, directed by Mark Steven Johnson (“Daredevil,” “Ghost Rider”), is a vehicle to turn Bell into a household name in the mold of Sandra Bullock. She plays Beth, a curator at the Guggenheim who has given up o n t ru s t i n g m e n a n d i n s t e a d h a s “ a re l a t i o n s h i p w i t h m y job.” (Anjelica Huston plays her wooden boss.) Bell was most widely seen (but was largely underused) as the exgirlfriend in the Judd Apatowproduced “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” The better proof of her smarts and wit, though, was the short-lived UPN detective series “Veronica Mars.” Here, her charisma feels stifled by the cliched when-will-Iever-get-married story. She has

When Beth travels to Rome for her sister ’s (Alexis Dziena) wedding, she hits it off with the best man, Nick (Duhamel). Aside from being tall and dashing, he has a self-effacing sense of humor and helps her through the disastrous reception. But their connection is severed by a misunderstanding and Beth, crestfallen again, ends up sloshing around in the (fictional) Fontana
D’Amore (fountain). Angry at the world, she steals five coins tossed in for good luck in love. This theft elicits a curse — that those who threw the coins are immediately and hopelessly in love with Beth. Back in New York, a bizarre foursome stalks her: an Italian painter (Will Arnett), a “Sausage King” (Danny DeVito), a street magician (Jon Heder) and a self-adoring male model (Dax Shepard, Bell’s real-life squeeze). In over-the-top fashion, they all
compete for laughs, though only DeVito succeeds much. Bobby Moynihan, the “Saturday Night Live” cast member, provides the best complementary comedy as Nick’s drinking buddy. While Nick competes for Beth’s attention among the four obsessives, the point is clear: To be in love is to be under a spell, with or without magic coins. It’s all exceptionally predictable and disappointingly laugh-free, especially since anything with
Arnett — one of the funniest around — is typically worth the price of admission. Duhamel is left to utter lines such as, “This is real, I’m real,” but he generally comes off as better than the material. The finest moments of the film are his periodic physical gags and welltimed pratfalls. It’s that slapstick that suggests where “When in Rome” might have gone: more screwball and less rom-com.
“Crazy Heart" gets boost from Bridges By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge Well...the Spider-Man and Superman f i l m f r a n c h i s e s h a v e p ro c l a i m e d t h a t their next installments will be series reboots. That’s a load off my mind. I was worried that we might have to actually experience continuing adventures of these senior superheroes rather than getting the exciting chance to see the same stories rehashed! Yes, I do realize better than most that sarcasm doesn’t always translate in the written word. Let me clarify that m i n e i s v e h e m e n t a n d I re s e n t t h e s e announcements bitterly. N o n e o f t h i s b e a r s o n m y r e v i e w, except to say that the new film “Crazy Heart” is not necessarily the same old thing that seems to come out each week. Specifically, Jeff Bridges’ performance as disgraced country singer Bad Blake is beautiful. He swings from humor to sexy showman to deep depression from sceneto-scene and the whole of it lets the film’s

Bad is fifty-seven years old, nearly as old as Bridges himself, and aging badly due to the toll of the bottle and the road. He drinks because he’s always on the ro a d , b u t h e ’ s o n t h e ro a d t h e w h o l e year playing gigs to pay for his whiskey problem. It’s a dangerous combination that really sticks a poker in the eye of those who idolize the rock star lifestyle. Bad’s real name isn’t used (until the film’s end). Frankly, in the age of the Internet, I find it silly that such information could be lost to time. It does afford him with
the ability to keep a mysterious shroud about himself – hiding it from inquisitive minds, like journalist Jean Craddock (Maggie Gyllenhall), the much younger woman with whom he carries on a rather passionate year-long affair. Jean is a single mom and her son, Buddy (Jack Nation), gives Bad something good to focus his energy on. It’s during this episode of his life that we see our short glimpse into the life of Bad Blake. The two get along famously, up until the point when we realize how bad a father he would actually have been if given the opportunity. Gyllenhaal’s performance doesn’t give up much but further proof that her choice in roles (like in 2002’s Secretary and 2006’s SherryBaby) falls a little to the kinky side. So why is Bad such an unhappy lout? Well, mainly, you just need the lyrics from Garth Brooks’ “Much Too Young (to Feel this Damn Old)” to figure that one out. Long hauls to honky-tonks where
fifty people show up to hear old hits don’t boost a performer ’s self-esteem. Neither do the lonely women or boozesoaked adventures that come with them. And there’s no real home life for Bad. I would bet the worst, though, is seeing the young bucks coming up behind him and stealing the reins right out of his teeth. Being the opening act for superstar Tommy Sweet (Colin Farrell, toeing that usual line between talented and sleazy) might give him some financial stability, but the irksome nature of playing second fiddle to your own protégé surely burns the back of Bad’s throat. The best he has to look forward to is an afternoon of fishing with his corner bar buddy, played by Robert Duvall. It’s always a treat to see Duvall in a film, but I found this appearance especially ironic. Bridges’ role parallels in many ways the one for which his cos t a r w o n a n O s c a r i n 1 9 8 3 ’ s “ Te n d e r Mercies.” I can’t be the only person who sees this, can I?

Travel Express Getting you where you want to go By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Palm trees. Warm breezes. Carefree days. Those are the main requests coming into Travel Express in Edwardsville, as people are feeling the effects of a brutal winter and cabin fever. “This is our busy time of the year,” said Beverly Moehlmann, General Manager of Travel Express. The phones were ringing non-stop as “Bev,” as most know her, juggled the incoming calls along with the other three travel agents, as she shared the company’s history with a smile. “In March, we celebrate our 25th year in business,” said Bev. They are going to celebrate by giving the office a fresh makeover with new furniture and fixtures and a grand re-opening celebration. Bev had an exciting 2009. Not only did she get married to Todd Moehlmann, but the same month, she acquired ownership of Travel Express. After working there for a number of years and really loving what she had been doing for the last 25 years, she was approached by the previous owner. He had been having some health issues and wanted her to be the first person that he offered the sale of the business to. She and her new husband acquired the business the same month they were married. Travel Express has a long history with Edwardsville. Originally named Tenholder Travel, they opened their doors in March of 1985. At that time there were five other travel agencies in Edwardsville alone. Fast forward to 2010. There has been a name change and a couple location changes, but they are busier than ever. Bev shares the office with three other travel agents who all have no less than 20 years experience as travel agents. Cheryl Colp is a Travel Consultant, Tammy Perry is a Tour and Cruise Specialist and Bonnie Boushard is also a Tour and Cruise Specialist. Probably the most unknown fact

about the travel agency business is that the services offered to their customer are free. Yes, that is right, free. The only service that has a cost is for individual airline tickets, and that is a very nominal fee. The agency is funded by the companies that they sell their services for (resorts, travel companies, airlines, hotels, etc.) Many people are turning to the internet and becoming their “own” travel agent. But, if people really

They are there to find the right product, at the best price, for your needs. 2. Personalized service. Using the services of a travel agency means you are not booking with an impersonal Web site or some voice a 1,000 miles away. You are dealing
with a travel agency, you are less likely to experience a flight, city or accommodation change by the tour operator, as they know the agency will be there to stand behind you. 4. The best value for your travel dollar. Travel agents inform you about all your choices, let you know about special promotions and can advise on the quality of a particular product. 5. Convenient one-stop shopping. Your travel agent can save you

Travel Travel Briefs Study: Cruises to mean $37M for S.C. economy in 2010 CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A study released Monday shows South Carolina’s expanding cruise industry will mean $37 million to the state’s economy this year. The study, commissioned by researchers at the College of Charleston for the South Carolina StatePorts Authority, also found that the industry supports 400 jobs in the Charleston area with $16.2 million in salaries and wages. The industry also generates $3.5 million in tax revenue. The study was compiled by John Crotts, a professor of hospitality and tourism management as well as College of Charleston economist Frank Hefner. This year, 53 cruises will embark from Charleston while 16 other cruises will make ports calls. Beginning this spring, Carnival Cruise Lines will permanently base its 2,056-passenger Carnival Fantasy in Charleston. “Waterborne commerce and tourism have been two pillars of Charleston’s growth over many years,” Ports Authority CEO Jim Newsome said. Crotts, who said if anything, the figures are a bit conservative on the effect of the cruise business, said
the study didn’t analyze how much cruise business Charleston could absorb. He said cruise lines are beginning to homeport smaller cruise ships, generally in the 2,000-passenger class, up and down the East Coast. “They are looking at the market and what the market will generate,” he said, adding that Charleston now generally serves travelers from the Carolinas. Travelers from other nearby states, such as Georgia, generally leave from other ports, Crotts said. “My gut feeling on this, and history seems to bear it out, is the Port of Charleston will not support more than one cruise ship of that class,” Crotts said. Newsome said he expects the most Charleston could handle is two cruise calls a week. “The number I have used consistently is two a week ... which would be logical based on the size of the market.” The State Ports Authority is working with the city of Charleston on redeveloping its existing cruise terminal and 55-acre tract around the terminal and Union Pier on the Charleston Cooper River waterfront. Officials say a modern terminal is needed to handle the growing cruise business. A conceptual plan for the new cruise terminal is to be unveiled next week.

In eastern Cuba, wax Hemingway looks spookily real H AVA N A ( A P ) — E r n e s t Hemingway still haunts Cuba; he’s just doing it in wax. A life-size likeness of the legendary author debuted last week at a wax museum in the eastern city of Bayamo. Hemingway wrote “The Old Man and the Sea” while living in Cuba and his exploits in literature and life are celebrated in monuments across the island. His home outside Havana has become a museum. But the wax statue is the first of its kind in Cuba. With serious eyes that look spookily authentic and stare into
the distance, the author has a black dress shirt and cigarette. His favorite drink, the daiquiri, is nowhere to be found, however. Hemingway joins the likes of Benny More and Buena Vista Social Club’s Compay Segundo at the museum, which opened in 2004.
Florida campus restoration revives Wright’s vision LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — Like any other sunbather, Frank Lloyd Wr i g h t ’ s “ C h i l d o f t h e S u n ” withered in Florida’s heat, humidity and harsh sunlight. Moisture seeped through the sand-and-cement blocks Wright used to build the chapels, library,
planetarium and classroom and administrative buildings of Florida Southern College in the central Florida town of Lakeland, about 50 miles southwest of Orlando. The iron support bars knitting the blocks together rusted and swelled, causing walls to buckle. Some of the “Child of the Sun” structures, constructed between 1939 and 1958, were altered as the college’s needs changed, dimming the sunlight Wright wanted to illuminate his “organic” buildings. The Wright-designed buildings on campus were named to the World Monument Fund’s 100 most endangered sites in 2007. Funded by several grants, ongoing restoration projects are giving visitors a glimpse of the famed architect’s original vision, and tours are available as well.

“Menopause the Musical” returns to Westport By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Gather the girlfriends, take your sisters, load up your mom, or drag your husband and make sure to make a date to see “Menopause The Musical.” Back by popular demand after only a one week engagement in the fall, the longest running show in St. Louis is making a return visit. Inspired by a hot flash and a bottle of wine, “Menopause The Musical,” will return to The Playhouse at Westport Plaza from March 5 through May 8. Tickets are on sale now and discounted prices for groups of 15 and over are also available. “Menopause The Musical” has been seen by nearly 11 million people across the world since it debuted in a 76seat perfume-shop-turned-theatre in Orlando, Fla., in 2001. As popular as it is worldwide, St. Louis has always been a favorite for the production company due to the outpouring of support received during the prior runs. Billed as “The Hilarious Celebration of Women and The Change,” the original, off-Broadway musical begins with four women, “Professional Wo m a n , ” “ S o a p S t a r, ” “ I o w a Housewife” and “Earth Mother,” at a Bloomingdale’s lingerie sale with nothing in common but a black lace bra - and hot flashes, night sweats, memory loss, chocolate binges, not

enough sex, too much sex and dayto-day challenges with aging parents, aging children and aging partners. A bond is created between these diverse women as they realize that menopause is no longer The Silent Passage! The show, which has become an international phenomenon, was written by Jeanie Linders and by special arrangement is produced and presented by South Floridab a s e d G F o u r P ro d u c t i o n s . T h e entire cast is local to St. Louis and are all reprising their roles from St. Louis’ first run. Laura Ackermann will star as Earth Mother and Marty Casey will play the Professional Woman. The Iowa Housewife is to be played Rosemary Watts and rounding out the cast is Lee Ann Matthews as Soap Star. “The show has become a point of relating, a celebration of a life passage that launches women into a new exciting phase of their lives,” says Linders. “Most women know intuitively what every other woman is facing with the onset of menopause. They talk about it with their friends and, on occasion, with their spouses. But, when they are in a theatre with hundreds of women and they’re all shouting ‘That’s Me!’ then they know what they are experiencing is normal. They call it a sisterhood!” The women share their ups and downs through a collection of classics songs from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. Disco hit “Stayin’ Alive” becomes
“Stayin’ Awake,” Motown favorite “My Guy” is transformed into “My Thighs,” “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” switches to “In the Guest Room or on the Sofa, My Husband Sleeps at Night,” and “Puff The Magic Dragon” becomes the anthem to exercise, “Puff, My God I’m Draggin.’” “Our goal with this show is to bring women together and empower them. This is an event – a happening,” says Kathi Glist, one of the show’s producers. “It encourages a healthy dialogue about issues of aging and women’s health and provides a great opportunity to raise awareness with female audiences.” “Menopause The Musical” supports the Jeanie C. Linders Fund, which in turn, supports women worldwide in the areas of business development, arts and culture, personal growth, health issues, and education. One such program is There’s No Place Like Home National which provides homes to women and families who have lost their homes to natural catastrophic disasters. Show times for “Menopause The Musical” are Wednesday through Friday at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday at 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Single tickets are priced at $45 and can be purchased by calling MetroTix at 314-534-1111 or www.metrotix.com. Unique St. Louis art on display at the Arch Jefferson National Expansion Memorial will host a special exhibit from St. Louis artist Sheila Harris at the Old Courthouse now through Aug. 22. Harris’ “portraitsâ€? of buildings depict structures from several generations of the city’s architectural history illustrating how the landscape on the r i v e r f ro n t e v o l v e d o v e r t i m e . the witty and darkly funny adventure “Audacityâ€? by Simon Mawdsley February 12 through February 21 at the Showplace, 2450 N. Henry Street, Alton. The British comedy is directed by Mark Hilgert and features a talented ensemble cast of Barry Thornell, Ian Hardin, Tonya Nix, Warren Frank and Elaine Myers. The timely production takes a stab at unemployment, marital strife, living beyond one’s means, age discrimination, much like the popular movie “Fun with Dick and Janeâ€?. In “Audacity,â€? a trio of three very-unlikely, firsttime crooks try to improve their lots in life by robbing a London Department Store. When their wives catch on, hilarity and plot twists ensue. Director Mark Hilgert likes the “edge and gritâ€? of the production
and has conceived a new format of staging for the show, which deals with adult themes and language that is not recommended for children. Adult audiences will surely identify with the economic frustrations the players face, and will undoubtedly get a cathartic release from the clever plan three men devise to “get even.â€? “A little honesty about greed never hurt anyone,â€? says Hilgert. Family Focus The Chakota Therapeutic Riding Center Where horse and rider connect in Germantown By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge A quote at the end of their brochure reads: “The spirit of the horse connects with ours and inspires us to be better people.” A profound statement that the Chakota Therapeutic Riding Center used as the foundation to build their equine assisted therapy center. Their mission: “To provide people with physical, mental, and emotional disabilities the opportunity for therapeutic interaction with horses, in hopes of increasing their selfesteem, dignity and emotional healing.” Located in Germantown, the riding center provides so much more than a trail ride to those with the afore mentioned disabilities. They offer a connection and a sense of freedom through horsemanship that many of the children have never experienced. Chakota Therapeutic Riding Center is the heart of owners Kay and Dave Langenhorst. The center is actually located on the Langenhorst family farm, which originated in 1884. Dave is known in his neck of the woods as “Dave the horse guy.” He began his relationship with therapeutic riding when he became a volunteer at the former “Mound of Miracles” which was located in Addieville. He witnessed a non-verbal autistic boy speak his first words ever on the back of a horse that the boy was riding. The boy called out the horse’s name and everyone knew that they had witnessed what they felt was a miracle. From that day forward, Dave’s priority was to make a therapeutic center available to the children in this area of Southern Illinois. Chakota Therapeutic Riding Center was born in June of 2005. They didn’t accept riders however, until two years later. The reason for the delay was that the center depends 100 percent on volunteers and they wanted to make sure that everyone who would be staffing the center was properly trained and certified in all of the areas necessary to bring the best therapeutic treatment and safety to the riders. “Safety is first. That is the bottom line.” said Kathy Langenhorst, the co-founder
and Executive Director of the center. They hit the ground running in 2007, when they sent out 13 invitations for an open house that went out to families that people had recommended as possible candidates for the program. Thirty-four people showed up. That was the first sign that the Langenhorsts and their volunteers had struck a chord with a much needed service for this area. Chakota proudly received their 501 C3 non-profit status this past August. The center is run strictly with much needed and appreciated volunteers and donations. They host about a half dozen fundraisers throughout the year, along with monetary, service and supply donations from those in the community. All donated funds help to purchase adapted equipment for the riders,
provide volunteer training, upkeep of the horses, and so much more. The annual fundraisers are: the local ABATE Chapter of Freedom Riders who host a Poker Run usually in May, “handicapped accessible” trick-or-treating in October, a chicken and beer dance in October and probably their biggest fundraiser, the “Wild, Wild West” trivia night at Hidden Lake Winery in Aviston, usually in November. On Thursday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., the center will be hosting one of many “volunteer open houses.” The event will be at the Aviston American Legion, 601 South Clinton St., in Aviston. “Volunteers are the backbone of the center. Without them we would be nowhere,” said Kay. She wanted anyone who is interested
in helping with this rewarding program to know that they are welcome. No “horse experience” is necessary. The age limit is 14 years and up. All training is provided at the center and is free of charge. The volunteerism also meets the qualifications of community service requirements for many organizations such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H, and more. If your desire isn’t to work with horses, but you still want to help, you are needed. There is fundraising organization along with a number of administrative tasks that need to be done. The center is also seeking horses that may be good candidates to participate in this program and someone would possibly want to donate. For more information on that process, contact Kay at 618-334-0885. If you have a child, or know of a child, that would benefit from the therapeutic center, anyone is welcome to contact the center to find out how to participate. The center will send out a “rider ’s packet” which includes all the information needed to participate. One of the main requirements needed is the child’s physician’s permission and recommendation that the program would be beneficial for the child. Kay and Dave Langenhorst want the community to know that they are trying hard to make the center family friendly. Participants can bring their family members with them, and the families can also participate in a number of events at the center, including fishing in the stocked pond. The center’s future goals are expansion of the therapeutic program and other family activities. They also are working hard to become NARHA certified (www.NARHA. org), which they hope to be very soon. The center is located at 6248 Wesclin Road, in Germantown, about six miles from Albers, exit 34 off I-64. You can learn more about the center and request more information by visiting www. chakota-trc.org, emailing: kayl@chakota-trc. org, or calling 618-334-0885.

Family Focus Study: “we” words strengthen marriages NEW YORK (AP) – Micki Sievwright has a new set of wheels that her husband constantly refers to as “my truck.” The same goes for their apartment and the backyard grill. Turns out the pronouns the Denver couple use count for more than mere semantics in the long haul. A new study suggests that “we” language used between spouses in times of conflict goes along with less negative behavior and signs of stress in lengthy marriages. Previous studies have indicated that use of inclusive pronouns that include “we,” “our” and “us” — versus “I,” “me” and “you” — are evidence of marital satisfaction in younger couples like Sievwright and hubby Dane, both of whom are 27. The latest work, in the September issue of the journal “Psychology and Aging,” carries the link forward to more established pairs when conflict bubbles, and reports evidence of more relaxed heart rates and blood pressure among those with the highest “weness” quotients. “We found more ‘we’ language in older couples and in happier couples,” said Robert Levenson, the study’s senior researcher at the University of California, Berkeley. Levenson said “we” words over “I” words are “part of this invisible language that can tell scientists what’s going on inside a marriage.” It’s a world so intimate and full of potential peril that honesty is sometimes sacrificed for saving face. Studying the tiny parts of speech is a valuable window because such words are often left uncensored in a marriage, though more research is necessary to determine whether marital bliss leads to “we” or the other way around, he said. “It’s something that they’re not thinking about consciously and are probably not much aware of. It’s just a little chip of behavior that we can count,” Levenson said. Each of 154 middle age and older couples in the study spent 15 minutes discussing a point of disagreement while hooked to heart rate and blood pressure monitors in Levenson’s laboratory. The researchers later watched videotapes of the interactions with attention to emotional behavior and the pronouns used, overlaid against the readings on physical stress. The middle age couples were married at least 15 years and those in the older group at least 35 years. “When the ‘we’ language was predominant, those 15 minutes were emotionally positive and physiologically calm, and those were also the couples who were most satisfied with their marriages,” Levenson said. Marital satisfaction was based on written questionnaires the couples filled out. The ‘me’ pronouns were more closely associated than “we”

“me” in favor of “we” in marriage has implications that reach miles beyond parts of speech and may also hinge on massive generational shifts, said psychology professor Doreen Arcus, who delves into family issues at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Arcus, 57, said personal pronouns in relation to identity were the least
of her worries when she and Dan got hitched 28 years ago. “ We w e r e f a n a t i c a l a b o u t equality,” she said. She kept her name and insisted on shared wedding bands over an engagement ring, for instance. There were other rules: They took turns sleeping on the side of the bed closer to the windows and the

Twenty-eight years later, we have settled into our own grooves and together they work for us. I never did care if the checkbook balanced to the penny. I’m a better cook than he is,” Arcus said.

Fazzi’s An experience you can’t have anywhere else
By BILL TUCKER Of The Edge There’s one drawback to Fazzi’s – you can’t order everything on the menu. Located in Collinsville, the triplethreat mix of Greek, Italian and American cuisines is one of the best dining experiences in the metro-east. All too often, we’re served assembly line meals that enable you to eat the same food with the same flavor from coast to coast. That’s OK because you always know exactly what you’re going to get at Red Lobster or IHOP. But the taste buds require a little more. Something different, something unique. I’ve always had a weakness for one-of-a-kind restaurants. Edwardsville once had two great ones in P.K.’s and Rusty’s. Alton still has Moonlight. Granite City still has Ravanelli’s. And Collinsville boasts Fazzi’s. You won’t be greeted by a maitre
d’de, nor will the men be required to wear a coat and tie. This restaurant is all about food – where you’ll get plenty and it’s all good. The appetizer menu features a little bit of this and a little bit of that. There are hot wings, crab cakes and toasted ravioli. But Fazzi’s goes beyond that with a spinach pie, hummus dip and saganaki – fried cheese that is “flamed” table side to a resounding cheer of “Opa!” It’s as much to eat as it is to order. There are a handful of salads
from the standard iceberg lettuce to a wide range to the almostfamous Greek salad, which includes cucumbers, green peppers, mushrooms, red onions, feta cheese and Fazzi’s own Greek dressing. You can order a gyro salad, Greek style bean soup or chicken avgolemeno soup if you’re feeling adventurous. From there, it’s a delicious hodgepodge of varying dishes. Yes, you can order a hamburger, a roast beef sandwich, a ruben, a jumbo hot dog and a gyro sandwich. The dinner menu isn’t divided into Greek and non-Greek sections, but could be. On the Greek side, offerings include pastichio, layers of ground beef and tubular noodles baked with bechamel sauce; mousaka, layers of seasoned ground beef, potatoes and eggplant served with bechamel sauce; dolmades; grape leaves stuffed with seasoned ground beef and rice then baked and a Greek sampler platter. As mentioned, there are Italian dishes served, too, including spaghetti and meatballs, shrimp
piccata, chicken piccata, chicken parmigiano and chicken alfredo. Steak lovers will find a New York strip, a rib eye and pork chops among the offerings. And Fazzi’s does fish, too, offering sauteed grouper, stuffed sole, a whole channel catfish, whitefish, tilapia, grilled salmon and filet of cod. Saving the best for last, there’s a gyro plate that is out of this world. A generous – and I mean generous – portion of gyro meat is topped with tzantziki sauce, tomatoes, onions and feta cheese and is served with pita bread. You can stack the toppings and try to go traditional, or dig in with a knife and fork. Either way, the gyro plate is a big winner. Fazzi’s has a full bar and a kids’ menu. And while you won’t bump into the Rockefellers, you will see a number of hard-working Americans who know good food. Fazzi’s is located at 1813 Vandalia St. (Route 159) in Collinsville. For more information, call 344-5440.

Dining Delights Designer doughnuts battling cute cupcakes CHICAGO (AP) — Pomegranate thyme and bing cherry balsamic may sound like salad dressings, a n d l e m o n c h a m o m i l e c re m e custard may evoke thoughts of fancy teas, but they’re actually cutting edge flavors in the latest fad to hit the baking scene — doughnuts. So much for glazed and jelly. Fresh off the nation’s fascination with cupcakes, bakers across the country are experimenting with gourmet flavor combinations and unorthodox ingredients in doughnuts, everything from meats to Cocoa Puffs breakfast cereal. At Glazed Donuts Chicago, for example, mint leaves spring f ro m t h e h o l e s o f i c e d m i n t mojito doughnuts. Baker Kirsten Anderson also adds grape jelly to the dough of her peanut butter and jelly doughnuts. “ Yo u ’ re t a k i n g a re l a t i v e l y i n e x p e n s i v e i t e m a n d y o u ’ re turning it into a luxury item,” says Anderson, whose seasonal o ff e r i n g s a l s o h a v e i n c l u d e d butternut squash and white chocolate blueberry doughnuts. “So maybe people can’t afford the best house or the best car, but they can go out and buy a piece of indulgence at a price they can afford.” Paul Mullins, author of “Glazed America: A History of the Doughnut,” calls them “designer doughnuts,” and says the trend defies the stereotype of doughnut shops as smoke-filled hangouts of laborers lingering over burnt coffee and bad doughtnuts. And fancy doughnuts are increasingly common. Designer doughnut shops, bakeries and related businesses have proved popular with young urbanites on both coasts, as well as large cities such as Chicago, Mullins says. “The chefs, they’re really skilled, they are really creative,” he says. “These designer d o u g h n u t s b y re g u l a r K r i s p y Kreme-standards are pricey, but by haute cuisine standards, $5 or $6, that’s not that much.” The doughnut-makers are playing with consumers’ notions o f c r e a t i v i t y a n d c u r i o s i t y, Mullins says. “What in the world does a chamomile doughnut taste like? I don’t know if I’d want it on an every-week basis, but I’d give it a shot.” M i c h e l l e Va z q u e z , o w n e r of Mandarin Gourmet Donut Shoppe in Miami (home to the chamomile creation, as well as a guava and cheese variety), says h e r d o u g h n u t s a re a t t r a c t i v e to health conscious customers who want something “a little bit higher-class than a regular doughnut.” She uses organic ingredients, trans fat-free oil, seasonal fresh fruits, Ghirardelli chocolates and

While a bing cherry balsamic doughnut, found at one of the gourmet doughnut shops around the nation, may not be your thing you can get creative on your own and be part of the wave of designer doughnut offerings. These baked chocolate doughnuts let you avoid the mess of deep frying and allow for plenty of creativity in decorating. cheeses such as savory French fromage blanc and creamy Italian mascarpone. Mark Isreal, owner of Doughnut Plant in New York City, sees doughnuts as palletes for creativity and experimentation. He created a square doughnut filled with homemade jelly. Other re c e n t f l a v o r s h a v e i n c l u d e d peanut butter, roasted chestnuts, cranberries and coconut. “The bakery is my artist’s studio in a way, where I create,” Isreal says. “You’re going to have a flavor and a texture that is totally new for a doughnut and that’s exciting.” Designer doughnuts aren’t as popular as cupcakes, which spawned a craze of cafes and bakeries, but the groundwork is there, says Sarah Levy, a pastry chef who owns two dessert shops in Chicago and is author of “Sweetness: Delicious Baked Treats for Every Occasion.” “It’s an item where you can put a unique twist to it to kind of freshen it and make it exciting again,” she says. “It’s kind of a cool blank slate that you can doctor up and make them festive with different ingredients.” A t Vo o d o o D o u g h n u t s i n Portland, Oregon, owner Kenneth “Cat Daddy” Pogson says the bakery puts a signature stamp on doughnuts by using sugar cereals such as Fruit Loops and bacon strips as ingredients. The shop’s bacon maple bar doughnut came to be after a discussion about mixing savory and sweet flavors. “I walked in with some bacon one day and boom, there it was,”
P o g s o n s a y s . “ Tw o s t r i p s o f bacon.” Back in Chicago, Anderson makes doughnuts for customers like Ellen Pecciotto of Chicago, who bought butternut squash and frosted apple cider doughnuts. “I love the different flavors,” Pecciotto said after making her purchase at a recent local farmer ’s market. “Nobody does that.” Anderson says she will continue to experiment with her doughnut flavors. “ T h e re ’ s a l o t o f ro o m f o r growth,” she said. “I think things are just beginning.” ••• S o m a y b e y o u ’ re n o t q u i t e ready to make — or even try — pomegranate thyme doughnuts. Don’t worry. This recipe for fried doughnuts from Food Network host Alton Brown will give you back-to-basics good flavor without too much trouble. The doughnuts are delicious as is, or sprinkled with powdered sugar or a blend of powdered sugar and either cocoa powder or cinnamon. You also could glaze them with a mix of powdered sugar, vanilla extract and a splash of water or milk, then coat them with candy sprinkles. To make a chocolate ganache to dip the doughnuts in, slowly melt together equal parts cream and chopped dark chocolate (about 4 ounces of each should be enough). Let cool a bit before using. B e c a u s e t h e d o u g h n u t s a re fried, the oil will cause them to absorb powdered coatings. Be sure to coat the doughnuts just
before serving. BASIC FRIED DOUGHNUTS Start to finish: 2 hours Makes 20 to 25 doughnuts 1 1/2 cups milk 1/3 cup vegetable shortening 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons (2 packages) instant yeast 1/3 cup warm water (95 F to 105 F) 2 eggs, beaten 1/4 cup sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon nutmeg 5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting Vegetable oil, for frying (1/2 to 1 gallon, depending on fryer) In a medium saucepan over medium, heat the milk just until warm enough to melt the shortening. Place the shortening in a bowl and pour the warmed milk over it. Set aside. In a small bowl, sprinkle the yeast over the warm water and let dissolve for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, pour the yeast mixture into the large bowl of a stand mixer and add the m i l k a n d s h o r t e n i n g m i x t u re , first making sure the milk and shortening mixture has cooled to lukewarm. A d d t h e e g g s , s u g a r, s a l t , nutmeg and half of the flour. Using the paddle attachment, combine the ingredients on low speed until the flour is
incorporated. Increase the speed to medium and beat until well combined. A d d t h e r e m a i n i n g f l o u r, combining on low speed at first, then increase the speed to medium and beat well. Change to the dough hook attachment of the mixer and beat on medium speed until the dough pulls away from the bowl and becomes smooth, approximately 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer to a well-oiled bowl, cover and let rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size. On a well-floured surface, roll out the dough to 3/8-inch thick. Cut out the dough using a 2 1/2-inch doughnut cutter or pastry ring and using a 7/8inch ring for the center hole. Set the cut doughnuts on a floured baking sheet, cover lightly with a towel, and let rise for 30 minutes. Heat the oil in a deep fryer or Dutch oven to 365 F. Three or four at a time, gently place the doughnuts into the oil. Cook for 1 minute per side, then transfer the doughnuts to a cooling rack placed in baking pan (to catch drips). Allow to cool for 15 to 20 minutes prior to glazing, if desired. (Recipe from Alton Brown on Foodnetwork.com)

Has been good, has been slow. 47 Port Street Grill Ameristar Casino-St. Charles 5 stars This is a fantastic, fabulous steak house that is a great date night or special group night out. With their “Happy Days” decor and a breakfast, lunch and dinner menue that includes a one pound chicken fried steak and burgers made to order, you will have to ask for a doggy bag. for a nice date night or special night out. Bandana’s Barbecue Collinsville 4 stars Bandana’s is one our family favorites. Excellent food, excellent prices, great service. Their smoked meats have a great smoky flavor and are so tender. The sauce choices are the best. You have the choice of two sides, but I love their cole slaw. Their garlic toast is fabulous! Most of the traditional Italian dishes but additional gourmet Italian fare that is fantastic to the pallet. Colbert stirs the Olympics NEW YORK (AP) — Like many of the athletes vying for gold in Va n c o u v e r, S t e p h e n C o l b e r t ’ s Olympic training has been eventful. He has already auditioned for the U.S. bobsled, skating and curling teams. He has angered a sizable portion of Canada. And he has landed on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s Olympic preview. Now, he’s preparing for the big event. While “The Colbert Report” is in repeats next week, the comedian will be in Vancouver, British Columbia, for the first week of the Olympics. He’ll be there recording a wealth of material for his show (to air beginning Feb. 22), attending events, conducting interviews and doing a kind of halfshow from a stage set up outside the Olympic center. “We’ll bring snow because I don’t think Vancouver has any,” he said in an interview, taking a swipe at the city’s sometimes watery precipitation. Just as he has inserted himself into big events such as the 2008 election (during which he was briefly and illegitimately a candidate) and the Iraq war (he did a week of shows from Baghdad in 2009), Colbert has made himself a key figure for the XXI Olympic Games, which start Friday. When the U.S. Speedskating team lost its primary sponsor last fall (the Dutch bank DSB went bankrupt), the “Report” stepped in with a novel idea.
