in the city of infinite possibilities. When her carefully designed plans collide with the whims of fate, Elizabeth’s life splits into two parallel paths. "If/Then" follows both stories simultaneously as this modern woman faces the intersection of choice and chance. Jackie Burns will play Elizabeth, a woman on the verge of turning 40 whose smallest decisions or most random occurrences will impact her world in ways she never dreamt possible. Jackie recently played the role of Elizabeth in "If/Then" on Broadway, and has also played the iconic role of Elphaba in Wicked, both on Broadway and in the First National Tour. She starred in the 2009 Tony Award-winning revival of Hair, and also appeared in the original Off-Broadway cast of Rock of Ages. Anthony Rapp will play Lucas, an old college friend of Elizabeth, who reconnects with her when she moves back to New York City. Anthony is best known for originating the role of Mark Cohen in Jonathan Larson’s Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, Rent. Tamyra Gray, who will play Kate, an elementary school teacher and Elizabeth’s spirited new neighbor, is best known as one of the Top 4 finalists of the first season of “American Idol.” Tamyra is no stranger to Broadway having made her Broadway debut in Bombay Dreams in 2004, followed by

Trankina explores the duality of still life and storytelling in exquisitely painted scenes that are created with collections of anthropomorphic objects and vintage figurines and toys. A selection of gouache drawings also explore the process and materials of artmaking and the spaces in between. Though Trankina’s works allude to Old Master still life paintings, they stand firmly within our contemporary
world – and often refer to human relationships and all of their idiosyncrasies. Trankina received his M.F.A. degree in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and is a Professor of Art at Northern Illinois University. The exhibit is sponsored in part by Barbara and Arthur McDonnell. T h e A n n L e e a n d Wi l f re d Konneker Gallery:

This was not the first time that Nicole Harris hurt her children, this was just the first time that she got caught. Her life here in Edwardsville was very different from what her defense attorney want the jury to believe. If the truth ever gets out, she will definately be convicted again. I understand that an appeal is automatically granted in first degree murder trials, but this was one time that a life sentence should have been handed down. POSTED BY CARING AT 6:04 PM

BLAME IT ON BEAUTIFUL SKIN.
The Fox to host "Madea on the Run"
Tyler Perry’s “Madea on the Runâ€? will play the Fabulous Fox Theatre Friday, April 1 – 3. Show times are Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets at $75, $65, $55, $50, $45, $35 are on sale now at metrotix. com, by calling 314-534-1111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. A limited number of VIP packages will also be available. Group pricing will be available. Madea is at it again in Tyler Perry’s most outrageously funny stage play ever. In trouble with the local authorities, Mabel Simmons, notoriously known as Madea, is on the run from the law. With no place to turn, she volunteers to move in with her friend Bam who is recovering from hip replacement surgery. Bam is so grateful that her faithful friend Mabel is putting her on life on hold in order to nurse Bam back to health. Unknown to Bam however, Madea is only using the concerned friend gag as a way to hide out from the police. But as they say‌ all things work together for the good of those who love the Lord and are called according to his purpose. Madea’s presence at Bam’s house is just what the doctor ordered. Bam’s family is in desperate need of some home improvement, and it is the only kind of family makeover that Madea could deliver. Starring Tyler Perry as Madea, and Cassi Davis as Aunt Bam, “Madea On The Runâ€? delivers a couple hours of pure joy and laughter. With brand new music written by Tyler Perry, the show delivers a finger snapping and inspirational evening of theater. Madea’s life lessons on friendship, marriage, personal reflection, and overcoming, leave audiences with some great food for the soul. Don’t miss Tyler Perry’s Madea On The Run.

Religion briefs Christian scholar Pope extends new notes global religious olive branch to issues China in bid to WA S H I N G T O N ( A P ) — A mend ties Christian scholar says the world's future will hinge on how three religious questions are answered. Author Os Guinness, founder of the Trinity Forum, took part in a panel Tuesday at the National Press Club in Washington. He said the first question is whether Islam will modernize peacefully. The second is "which faith or ideology" will ultimately replace communism in China, and the third is whether Western civilization will return to its roots. Guinness said, "Religious freed o m i s a bsol u t e l y p i v o t a l to each of the answers to those questions if they're to come out constructively." Guinness was joined by former Con gre ssma n Fra n k Wo l f a n d international religious freedom advocate Nina Shea who cited what she called "genocide" against Christians and other religious minorities by Islamist radicals. Wolf highlighted the rise in religious oppression in China and other nations, and called for a stronger U.S. response.

"Ride Along 2"
With the same brand of silliness and a bit more creativity than the original, "Ride Along 2"doesn't pretend to be anything more than what it is: a sequel designed to offer a second helping of exactly what worked the first time around. The original "Ride Along" topped the box office for three straight weeks when it opened in January of 2014, collecting $150 million returns on its modest $25 million budget. It focused on Ben (Kevin Hart), an excitable video-game junkie and wannabe cop, and his attempts to impress his disinterested future brother-in-law, James (Ice Cube), a hardnosed police detective. Hart is goofy and slapstick; Cube is stern and annoyed. Producers reprise the formula and return to many of the original film's artists for the sequel, including screenwriters Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi and director Tim Story. This time around, Ben is a fresh graduate of the police academy a week away from his wedding to Angela (Tika Sumpter). He's still trying to impress her brother, James, who still can't stand him. At Angela's urging, James reluctantly agrees to bring Ben on a police mission from Atlanta to Miami, where James is on the hunt for a suspicious hacker, AJ (Ken Jeong). AJ is linked to a case James is working in Atlanta, but he's also connected to a major Miami drug lord, Antonio Pope (Benjamin Bratt), who has been masquerading as a philanthropist.RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sequences of violence, sexual content, language and some drug material. RUNNING TIME: 101 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
"The 5th Wave"
One major reason that young-adult fiction is so alluring — when done well — is that it gives youngsters such a fulfilling scenario of independence from those older adults in their lives who always think they're smarter and stronger. That scenario is front and center in "The 5th Wave," where every adult is either evil, inhuman (literally), or nice but helpless. It's truly up to the young — make that the young, buff and goodlooking — to save humanity. But if this movie, starring Chloe Grace Moretz as the latest plucky teen to fight for our species, performs its appointed task with efficiency, it does little more. Yes, the winsome Moretz is a fine, if one-note, reluctant heroine (the film's based on Rick Yancey's best-selling novel, and directed by J Blakeson). And she's surrounded by more than one appealing young man (the YA action-film rulebook seems to dictate at least two, so we can have a triangle.) But the script has more than a few lines that should have been sent directly to rewrite, and there's a nagging feeling throughout that we've sorta seen it all before. Not that this will deter fans of Yancey's book, which is the beginning of a trilogy, meaning we're sure to see more of Moretz's Cassie in years to come. She is, when we first meet her, a pretty perfect Ohio high schooler. Yes, she goes to a party and drinks beer and crushes on a cute football player named Ben. But then she goes home early and sings her little brother Sam to sleep. The next day, life changes forever. A giant alien craft appears in the sky. For days, the Others, as the aliens are known, don't make a move. Then come the four waves. First all power and technology is knocked out; planes and cars crash. Then giant tsunamis are unleashed, killing billions. Then there's crippling disease, transmitted by birds and killing countless more. The fourth wave brings attackers to Earth in unexpected form, all building up to the climactic fifth wave. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America "for violence and destruction, some sci-fi thematic elements, language and brief teen partying." RUNNING TIME: 12 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

On the Edge of the Weekend
"The Finest Hours"
Waves of water and nostalgia wash over the drenched and drippy "The Finest Hours," a Norman Rockwell painting tossed into stormy CGI seas. The disaster drama, directed by Craig Gillespie ("Lars and the Real Girl," ''Million Dollar Arm"), is a movie of curious contrasts: an unabashedly old-fashioned and overwhelmingly vanilla tale of awe-shucks-ing, double-dating 1950s seamen, told with the modern 3-D effects of your average end-of-the-world movie. It's about the 1952 rescue mission — a true story — of a fourman boat of Coast Guardsmen sent from Cape Cod to save the crew of the USS Pendleton, an oil tanker that a brutal winter storm has broken in half off the coast of Nantucket. "The Finest Hours" provides more working-class New Englanders bobbing in churning nor'easter currents for those who have been patiently waiting for another wave to catch since 2000's "The Perfect Storm." Here again is that formula of maritime adventure and Massachusetts accents (some believable, some that sink). This one has an Affleck. Playing the assistant engineer Ray Sybert on the Pendleton is Casey Affleck, who moodily skulks over pipes and valves in the engine room for much of the film. More knowing than his fellow shipmen, he attempts to convince them how to steer what's left of the tanker to safety. On land is Chris Pine's Bernie Webber, a timid, do-gooding Guardsman stationed in Chatham. The setting could hardly be more innocent; early scenes show Bernie's courtship of the red-haired Miriam (the radiant Holliday Grainger): seeds of sentimentality to fuel the action to come. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "intense sequences of peril." RUNNING TIME: 117 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
"Kung Fu Panda 3"
If you're one of those people — and I'm with you — who roll your eyes when handed a pair of 3D glasses at the multiplex, wondering if all this rigmarole is REALLY necessary, then take heart: The lovely, color-popping visuals in "Kung Fu Panda 3" are well worth those darned glasses. And the evocative DreamWorks Animation visuals are accompanied by just enough heart, witty dialogue and kidfriendly humor — anything about gorging on dumplings, for example — to make this an all-around extremely satisfying third installment in the popular series. Like a well-made dumpling, it's not too heavy but not too light, has the right amount of spice, and leaves one with some appetite for the next time. Much of the appeal of the "Panda" films is, of course, the starry cast of voices, and it's fun to try to figure out who they are, rather than informing yourself beforehand (but if you do, stop reading here). Of course, you'll already know that Jack Black is back, and in fine shape, as Po, our rotund panda hero and reluctant Dragon Warrior. Black's goofy persona is perfect for lines like, when he discovers other pandas don't use chopsticks to slow them down: "I always KNEW I wasn't eating up to my full potential!" That was my personal favorite, but the kids in the audience were overwhelmingly partial to this one, hurled mockingly by the overmatched Po at his taunting, evil opponent: "Chitty, chitty, chat, chat. Chat, chat, chat." The film, directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson and Alessandro Carloni, begins in the spirit realm, where Oogway, the ancient kung fu master (and tortoise), is suddenly attacked by the villainous bull Kai, a former friend. Kai has been spending the last few centuries collecting all the "chi" power from kung fu masters and storing it in amulets. RATEDL PG by the Motion Picture Association of America "for martial arts action and some mild rude humor." RUNNING TIME: Running time: 95 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Hail, Caesar!"
The Coen canon reaches a crescendo — or rather a warped inversion of one — in "Hail, Caesar!" when the brothers assemble a quartet of religious leaders from various faiths before Josh Brolin's 1950s movie studio "fixer" Eddie Mannix. The scene plays like a theological joke: the Coen version of a priest and a rabbi walk into a movie studio. "Does the depiction of Jesus Christ cut the mustard?" asks Mannix, succinctly. His agenda is to gain their approval for Capital Pictures' latest Bible epic, a sword-and-sandals movie led by the dimwitted star Baird Whitlock (George Clooney, looking particularly suited to golden age Hollywood). The question of how God should be portrayed in the film — a mere quibble amid the madcap machinery of a Hollywood studio — has been put off. An early reel of the movie leaves a tiny gap: "Divine presence to be shot," reads the insert. It's something like a summation of Joel and Ethan Coen's films: Meaning is a missing frame, human folly is the star and only the dialogue is divine. "Hail, Caesar!" is by no means their best, but it's in some ways the Coens' most essential. Having long made playthings of old movie genres, their romp through vintage Hollywood here is literal. It's a loving satire and merciless ode to moviemaking, where hapless souls serve no higher power than the Hollywood machine. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America "for moments of mild language, violence and sensuality." RUNNING TIME: 106 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"Pride & Prejudice & Zombies"
"Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" is as silly as it sounds, and not nearly as fun as it should be. In this adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's bestselling genre mashup of Jane Austen's classic and, well, zombies, the Bennet sisters don't just have marriage and love and class obstacles to fret about, there's also the imminent threat of the undead overtaking the land. Here, the Bennet sisters aren't merely unmarried gals looking for a suitable match, either. They're trained warriors who can and do protect their homestead. The most passionate, of course, is Elizabeth ("Cinderella's" Lily James). Early on the girls (Bella Heathcote, Ellie Bamer, Millie Brady, and Suki Waterhouse) get to show their bladewielding might against the fast-moving, brain-craving predators. It's actually pretty enjoyable, if a little manic. But director Burr Steers' attempts at melding these genres into one coherent film are clumsy at best. The film adheres sincerely to the beats of Austen's story — the balls, the scheming, the misunderstandings between Lizzie and Mr. Darcy (Sam Riley), the iconic scenes — while peppering most with a zombie scare or two. There is some wit in the simpler moments — a stoic shot of the Bennet sisters in the living room cleaning guns in their day dresses, for example, or the few famous verbal showdowns that are choreographed as all out fights. But that's the best that Steers can do to integrate the two very disparate tones sincerely. Otherwise it feels as though we're watching a number of movies patched together. Matt Smith and Lena Headey, in particular, seem to be acting in their own Terry Gilliam film that was kept secret from the rest of the cast. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "zombie violence and action, and brief suggestive material." RUNNING TIME: 108 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"Hail, Caesar!"a Coen crescendo By JAKE COYLE Associated Press The Coen canon reaches a crescendo — or rather a warped inversion of one — in "Hail, Caesar!" when the brothers assemble a quartet of religious leaders from various faiths before Josh Brolin's 1950s movie studio "fixer" Eddie Mannix. The scene plays like a theological joke: the Coen version of a priest and a rabbi walk into a movie studio. "Does the depiction of Jesus Christ cut the mustard?" asks Mannix, succinctly. It's a loving satire and merciless ode to moviemaking, where hapless souls serve no higher power than the Hollywood machine.
Their main character is the stone-face, fedora-wearing Mannix, a bruising studio executive who keeps the assembly line humming and its contracted stars out of the gossip pages. He's based on a real and mythic figure of the same name who ruthlessly toiled for Louis B. Mayer's MGM. Brolin's Mannix, though, is a family man, trying to quit smoking and making constant guilt-ridden trips to his church confessional. Among the tasks before him, per orders from above, is squeezing the Western star and genuine cowboy Hobie Doyle (newcomer Alden Ehrenreich, who steals the movie with some of the best bad actor acting you've ever seen) into "Merrily We Dance," a prestige drama from director Laurence Laurentz (a terrific Ralph Fiennes), whose directions — to
give "a mirthless chuckle" or pronounce the line "Would it 'twer so simple" — confound Doyle. The gulf between on-screen fiction and offscreen reality is comically vast, none more so than when star DeeAnna Moran (Scarlett Johansson), having just shot an elaborate Esther Williams-style aquatic scene, jumps out of the pool, sheds her mermaid fin, lights a cigarette and bitterly retorts in a thick Brooklyn accent: "How am I? Wet." Moran is having a child with unknown paternity — another fire for Mannix to put out. Twin-sister gossip columnists modeled after Hedda Hopper (both played by Tilda Swinton) are threatening to report something ominous about Baird from an older film of his, "On Wings as Eagles."
"Amy" doesn't live up to Cannes' hype By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge It's not often that I review a movie for you already available on DVD or in streaming formats, but a confluence of events have led me to do just that today. First of all, Super Bowl Weekend is a terrible time for new releases. None of the new films screamed out for me to see them immediately upon their release, so I skipped them in favor of the Big Game. The Coen Brothers' "Hail, Caesar!" does have a goofy, Old Hollywood appeal that is started to work on me, though. And as we creep ever closer to Oscar Night, I feel that old familiar twinge to see if this can be the year I finally see all the nominees beforehand. Factor in a free
Redbox promotional code and you have below my take on "Amy", the Best Documentary Feature nominee that explores the short life and over-too-quickly career of British crooner Amy Winehouse. I'll be back up to my old tricks next week. "Amy" was a product of last year's Cannes Film Festival and it is not your typical documentary. And certainly not your typical music documentary. The narrative is woven together through mostly archival footage of Winehouse and brief snippets of interviews with those closest to her. What strikes me most about this picture is not that it's designed in this way - other docs have also explored this type of storytelling - but how freely open about her vices Winehouse was
on camera. She had no problem smoking marijuana, drinking in excess, or shoveling other toxins i n t o h e r b o y w h i l e t h e e v e rpresent camcorder took it all in. Her bulimia is incredibly welld o c u m e n t e d . Ti m e a n d t i m e again her friends, family, and producers say of the fact that bingeing was Amy's way. They had no doubt that her stints in rehab would ultimately be met with failure. This fits i n t o t h e l a rg e r f r a m e w o r k o f Amy's personality, at least as I understand it through the lens of this picture. As someone to shy very much away from popular music, I knew next to nothing about Winehouse and her music before screening this movie. She was as big and bold as her beehive hairdo and husky voice
would lead you to believe. Her frankness and lower-class English diction (thank goodness for subtitles) made her a favorite of the people and the talk shows that would even have the wherewithal to book her as a guest. This endeared her to fans worldwide that consumed her music wildly. Inspired by the raw free form of jazz, Winehouse did of course have major hits with songs like "Rehab" and "Back to Black", but it was her collaborations with Tony Bennett ("Body and Soul") that I think most indicate how talented an artist she ultimately was. I can't say what it is about progressively modern female artists (such as Lady Gaga), but they sound good up alongside the octogenarian swinger. Truthfully, "Amy" features more about Winehouse's personal life
February 18, 2016
(parties, drugs) than her brief, impactful addition to the history of music. The lasting images many of us have are of the hair, the tight yellow dresses, and that cat-eye mascara. In the face of great success at the Grammy's and high-profile touring, Amy Winehouse really never looked all that comfortable on stage or in front of her fans. She sang because she was good at it. The rest was ill-fitted to her. It's not much of a legacy, but more years will have to pass before history fully judges her. But that's where she belongs, to history, (Forever) 27 years-old. "Amy" runs 128 minutes and is rated R for language and drug material. I give this film one star out of four.

The app makes summer in St. Louis productive for children and stress-free for parents. The resource is accessible from anywhere on any device at http://blueprint4summer.com. Blueprint4SummerSTL first launched in February 2015 and quickly became the go-to resource for St. Louis-area parents seeking educational, engaging and fun activities for their children during the summer months. By aggregating information about area programs, Blueprint4SummerSTL gives all parents access to local summer offerings. New this year, Blueprint4SummerSTL will help even more families find camps by expanding in scope, including parts of Illinois, and listing more camps within St. Louis City and County, St. Charles County and Jefferson County. Blueprint4SummerSTL is spearheaded by Maxine Clark, CEO of the Clark-Fox Family Foundation and founder of Build-A-Bear Workshop. Clark intends to keeps last year’s momentum going and anticipates the app being parents’ No. 1 resource as it continues to expand in reach this year. “In our first year of operation, Blueprint4SummerSTL presented more than 3,500 local summer camps and activities in an easy-to-use platform that was accessed by parents all across the greater St. Louis area,” said Clark. “Blueprint4SummerSTL is the most robust program information database – and best of all it’s completely free for all families to use. As the app grows its footprint, our goal is to make sure all children have equal opportunity to enroll in these important and impactful summer programs.” Using the app, a parent or guardian can quickly find programs and resources that may work for the needs of their family and each individual child. Activities can be searched based on any number of preferences such as age, gender, interests, cost and zip code – even special considerations such as sessions for special needs students or gifted students, those offering before and after care, or that have scholarships available. The app provides information about day camps, sleep-away camps and sports camps; art, music and science programs; and academic enrichment courses in STEM. Currently more than 2,500 summer sessions are already listed, and the database is growing daily as enrollment periods begin and more organizations learn about the Blueprint4SummerSTL app. The app also offers summer programs the opportunity to easily submit their camps for free. An organizer can simply create a free account on Blueprint4SummerSTL and then send an email to allie@ blueprint4summer.com with the name of the camp they are representing. Blueprint4SummerSTL will link the account, allowing the organizer to edit, update and add new program information For more information about Blueprint4SummerSTL, to learn about programs and to connect with other parents online, “like” B l u e p r i n t 4 S u m m e r S T L o n F a c e b o o k a t w w w. People People planner The Fox to host Garrison Keillor
T h e F a b u l o u s F o x T h e a t re proudly presents host/producer Garrison Keillor & friends live at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis for the final time at 4:45 p.m. on June 18 for the popular weekly radio broadcast, A Prairie Home Companion. This performance will be the last time Garrison Keillor will host A Prairie Home Companion in St. Louis. Tickets are $68, $58, $38 nad are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-534-1111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. If you showed up on July 6, 1974, at the Janet Wallace Auditorium at Macalester College in Saint Paul and plunked down your $1 admission (50 cents for kids) to attend the very first broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion, you were in select company. There were about 12 people in the audience. But those in attendance thought there were worse ways to spend a Saturday afternoon, so Garrison Keillor and the APHC team went on to produce close to 500 live shows in the first 10 years alone. There were broadcasts from this venue and that, until March 4, 1978, when the show moved to The World Theater, a lovely, crumbling building that was one plaster crack away from the wrecking ball. (Now fully renovated and renamed The Fitzgerald, it is the show’s home base.) In June of 1987, APHC ended for a while. Garrison thought it was a good idea at the time, but
only two years later, the show was back, based in New York and called American Radio Company of the Air. But there’s no place like home. So in 1992, it was back to Minnesota and, soon after, back to the old name:A Prairie Home Companion.
T h e re h a s b e e n p l e n t y o f adventure in the past 40-plus years — broadcasts from Canada, Ireland, S c o t l a n d , E n g l a n d , G e r m a n y, Iceland and almost every one of the 50 states; wonderful performers, little-known and world-renowned;

To d a y, A P r a i r i e H o m e Companion is heard by 4 million listeners each week on nearly 700 public radio stations, online, and on the American Forces Networks, SiriusXM Radio, Radio New Zealand, and KPRG in Guam.

People planner MoBOT to host Orchid Show
Journey into an orchid-filled world and learn more about these amazing plants during the 2016 Orchid Show, “Where Wild Things Grow. The Orchid Show runs Feb. 6 to March 27, 2016. At every turn, orchids burst from the landscape with bright, bold colors. Approximately 500 orchids are on display at any one time, including Cattleya, Laelia, Encyclia, Oncidium and Paphiopedilum along with many other varieties. Spanning a wide range of sizes, colors and scents, these orchids are displayed as they would be found in their natural habitats, with terrestrial orchids at ground level and epiphytic orchids suspended atop tree branches. Hundreds of other tropical plants and ferns help set the verdant scene. This year’s Orchid Show offers visitors the chance to learn more about the habitats of orchids and how they adapt to changing environments. The Missouri Botanical Garden’s work including research, discovery, conservation and restoration of orchids will be presented with interpretation encompassed in the beautiful display. Orchids are found on every continent of the world except Antarctica, with the greatest diversity found in the tropics. Most tropical orchids grow on other plants and derive moisture and nutrients form the air. Orchids found in more temperate regions are terrestrial, growing out of the ground rather than on other plants. Some orchids grow on long vines, and in a variety of conditions including deserts and rain forests. Orchids are valued by collectors because of their beauty which has led to some species becoming
endangered due to over-collecting in the wild. The Garden works diligently to protect those at-risk species though conservation and recovery programs in the United States and around the world. Throughout the year, Missouri Botanical Garden horticulturists care for the collection behind the scenes in the private greenhouse range. Temperatures inside greenhouses are manipulated to force the winter bloom of as many plants as possible for the annual Orchid Show. Orchids are grouped by watering needs and different fertilizers are used depending on the season. Spent blooms are replaced with new ones on a daily basis, shifting the look and landscape of the show throughout its run. Orchid Show admission is $5 per person (ages 3 and older), in addition to general Garden admission ($8 for adults; $4 for St. Louis City and County residents, with free admission Wednesdays and Saturdays until noon; free for children ages 12 and younger). Missouri Botanical Garden members enjoy free general admission along with free Orchid Show admission. The Missouri Botanical Garden is located at 4344 Shaw Blvd. in south St. Louis, accessible from Interstate 44 at the Vandeventer exit and from Interstate 64 at the Kingshighway North and South exit. Free parking is available on site and two blocks west at the corner of Shaw and Vandeventer.n For general information, visit www.mobot.org or call (314) 577‑5100 (toll-free, 1‑800‑642‑8842). For The Edge
A costumed park ranger demonstrates how to carry wooden buckets of maple sap to a campfire, to be cooked down into maple syrup.
McHenry County set for maple syrup season For The Edge
I
n March, it's not always obvious that winter is winding down across northern Illinois, but maple trees know the season is changing.
Their sap is rising, and that means it's time to make maple syrup. Commercially, Canada produces 90 per cent of the world's maple syrup, and it's such a precious commodity that criminals hijack semi-loads of it. But you don't need to cross the border to see how it's made! Just an hour's drive northwest of Chicago, the McHenry County Conservation District's annual "Festival of the Sugar Maples" makes it possible for you and your
18
family to discover how it's done. The Festival takes place at the Coral Woods Conservation Area near Marengo over two weekends, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday March 5-6 and 12-13. One hour tours leave every 15 minutes and feature the cultural history of the century-old maple grove and stories of how maple syrup was made hundreds of years ago. Discover how maple trees produce sap each spring and how the sap is collected and boiled down into syrup in the evaporator house. (If you wonder why real maple syrup is so dear, it's because it takes 30 to 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup!) End your tour with a taste of fresh Coral Woods maple syrup, some hot cocoa and sweet

maple treats! The Festival is free and registration is not required. All ages are welcome, but children ages 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Patrons are urged to dress for the weather and to wear shoes appropriate for hiking to the maple grove (about ½ mile, or six blocks). Want some pancakes with your syrup? Fuel-up before the Festival at the Union Lions Club Annual Pancake Breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon, Sunday, March 6, at Smithwood BBQ Grill, 6517 Main Street, Union. Breakfast is $6 per adult and $3 per child. School field trips are available March 7-11 and 14-17, by reservation for Kindergarten through fifth grade classes.
For details, phone the McHenry County Conservation District at 815-479-5779. For more information and directions to the Coral Woods Conservation Area, go to: www.mccdistrict.org. McHenry County is just an hour's drive northwest of Chicago, bordered on the north by Wisconsin, and on the south by I-90. The Fox River winds down from the Chain of Lakes through the towns on the eastern side of the county, while country roads meander the western side. For visitor information, including links to the above attractions, plus lodging and dining options throughout McHenry County, go to www.VisitMcHenryCounty.com or phone 815-893-6280. Bill Roseberry/The Edge
Above, pineapple fried rice with pork added to it at Pearl Cafe in Florissant. Below, the Thai grilled ribs and sticky rice.
The Pearl Cafe in Florissant By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge I was recently in Florissant with a hankering for Asian cuisine, which led me to a North County staple — Pearl Cafe. I have heard stories of the awesomeness of Pearl Cafe, but never had the pleasure of checking this hot spot out until my recent visit. Located at 8416 N. Lindbergh Blvd., in Florissant, Pearl Cafe is a Thai restaurant with a big selection of food and even bigger selection of craft beers. The Riverfront Times has voted it best Thai Restaurant in St. Louis, so it's got a tangible award to back up its street cred. My dinner mate Kelly, a longtime NoCo resident, boasted of Pearl Cafe's excellence and pointed out some go-to plays on the menu. If you aren't familiar with Thai cuisine, it can get quite spicy, like five-alarm fire spicy if you aren't careful. It's usually a good idea to talk to your server about the heat accompanying your selection from the menu. Pearl Cafe doesn't get too crazy with the spice. There are red peppers marked next to the entrees to indicate spiciness to help you while ordering. Some have one, others have two. To be on the safe side I stuck with the ones with zero peppers next to them. We of course had to hit up the appetizer menu first and Kelly told me what I was getting. We went with the fried spring rolls and the Thai grilled ribs with sticky rice. The fried spring rolls consisted of mixed cabbage, carrot and green beans wrapped in rice paper, deep fried and served with a sweet and sour sauce. They were a light appetizer and had a great taste, but were no different from spring
rolls I have encountered at other restaurants. They were good, just not unique enough for me. But when I took my stab at the ribs and sticky rice I was in for an experience. If you aren't familiar with sticky rice its a little odd. It's a delicacy native to Southeast and East Asia, an opaque rice that becomes ridiculously sticky, almost glue-like when cooked. The ribs were dry rubbed and coated lightly in a special Thai sauce. The taste of the ribs and the sticky rice together was absolutely phenomenal. Trying to eat them, at least for me, was a little comical. The meat had a scrumptiously sweet taste, but was a little tough coming off the bone, couple that
with the texture of the rice and I'm sure I looked like I was a few sandwiches short of a picnic while trying to eat it. Clumps of sticky rice shot across the table as I struggled to pull meat from the bone. Taste wise, it was excellent and I would order it again, maybe round two will go a little better. Kelly had no trouble eating hers and was a little embarrassed by my fumble fingers. Now it was time to get to our main courses. I went with pork and pineapple fried rice, while Kelly ordered the Pahd Thai special. My order consisted of eggs, pork, pineapples, green onions, green beans, raisins and cashews mixed together with fried rice. Oh boy, the
taste was outstanding. The raisins and pineapples offered the dish a level of sweetness that was unbelievable. That was cut by the saltiness of the pork and cashews. Combined it made for the most heavenly fried rice experience of my life. There was so much I had to take some with me and fortunately it was still pretty outstanding once it was reheated also. Kelly had no complaints over her Pahd Thai either. It was comprised of rice noodles with eggs, tofu, bean sprouts, green onions and topped with peanuts. The special added shrimp, beef, pork and chicken to it. As for the beer selections, Pearl Cafe boasts over 200 from around
February 18, 2016
the world. I of course had to partake in a couple. One complaint about Pearl Cafe is it is extremely small. Every table was filled on the Saturday night when Kelly and I visited and there were people waiting to be seated. The tables are kind of right on top of each other, so you're neighbors will in essence be eating with you. There's nothing classy about the dĂŠcor. It's all open tables and there are beer bottles lined up on the wall. It especially doesn't look like much from the outside, but trust me, it's worth the trip. Delving deeper into the menu, its is pretty large and offers some intriguing choices. Looking at the appetizer menu, the Vietnamese crepes and crispy shrimp rolls caught my attention. There are plenty of soups and salads to choose from, too. The tom yum seafood soup includes shrimp, squid, scallops and mushrooms among other ingredients and boasts a high spiciness level. Then there are noodle, fried rice, stir-fry and curry dishes with variety of ingredients and spice levels. Pearl Cafe even has a noodle soup section, which includes variations of the popular Vietnamese soup, Pho. Make sure to check out the vegetarian section and Pearl's Specials on the back of the menu. To learn more about Pearl Cafe, check out their website at www. dinepearlcafe.com. It can get a little pricey, but there are lunch specials available with a smaller price tag if you can get there in the afternoon. Pearl Cafe is closed on Sunday, but open Monday through Saturday for lunch and dinner. Pearl Cafe is just a great place to expand your horizons and your palate when you gotta eat.

She recently recorded with Postmodern Jukebox, and she's a grad of the Grand Ole Opry and the chicest rooms on both coasts...just stunning. Bookending the season is Steven Lutvak, a superb showman, and the Tony-Award winning composer of A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, winner of the 2014 Tony Award for Best Musical, in a co-production with The Rep In between is the very popular and well known Pink Martini featuring China Forbes, making their St. Louis debut in a co-production with The Sheldon, and taking place in the Sheldon Concert Hall, the perfect room for them...one of the emergent talents in all of cabaret, Marissa Mulder encounters Marilyn Monroe in a magical mix of cabaret and theater. It is the show's first public performance expecting big things. The NY Times said about Marissa's last show "far and away the best cabaret show of the season." KT Sullivan and Jeff Harnar, each a Manhattan cabaret headliner, together take on Stephen Sondheim in a hauntingly good show prepping for a New York theater run....Liam Forde is "a boy wonder" and "already a star" who has "taken the town by storm." He's one break away from playing a lot more seats, so catch him now. One of the truly outstanding voices in all of jazz, someone who can run with Sarah and Ella and Dinah and Billie, Tammy McCann comes
down from Chicago Natalie Douglas (these great voices this season have no end) does her acclaimed and incredibly fun Dolly Parton show The preternaturally gifted Jon Weber takes up a residency (that means he's playing all the shows over three weekends - KT and Jeff, Tammy, Marissa, Natalie and Liam) and does his own "From Joplin to Jarrett," a history of piano jazz in 70 minutes. "An exceptional musician, a gifted historian and storyteller, a true piano polymath, " says the WSJ Hometown girl gone Broadway, and yet another of those astonishing voices we have in such abundance this season, Lisa Rothauser comes home with husband and Grammynominated songwriter Tor Hyams in a show that's sold out NY's Joe's Pub and 54 Below... The exceptionally likable and leading-man handsome Jeffrey M. Wright comes back with his sold-out splash from the fall Executing a great idea that nobody else is doing, Robert Breig brings his Peter Allen show to The Gaslight...next stop NY...One of St. Louis's most memorable voices and national anthem singer for the Blues the hugely talented Charles Glenn - "a St. Louis treasure" says FOX Sport - is fired up for his cabaret debut Amy Friedl Stoner blew us away last summer, and she comes down from Iowa with her fourpiece to do Carole King proud... "Stoner is mesmerizing in any style, any stage, any venue, anywhere." says te Cedar Rapids Gazette, and "Pretty, passionate, and powerful. Keep your eye on this rising star!" says Cabaret Scenes Joe Mancuso makes his cabaret debut, telling his own story of tragic events that changed his life and put him on the musical journey that made him an award-winning vocalist and St. Louis favorite... Nicole Hudson and Katie McGrath join forces to explore one of their favorite, and our most urgent, topics: St. Louis, the city we love and long to change. Through a combination of songs from Broadway, main street and our own mean streets. As Nietzche remarks, art is there to keep the truth from killing us... Joe Dreyer and Rosemary Watts, the first couple of St. Louis cabaret, grace the Gaslight stage with an all new show.

Masterworks plans Broadway pops concert For The Edge Masterworks Chorale and Children’s Choruses present The Popular Broadway Pops! Concert at Lindenwood Auditorium in Belleville at 7:30 p.m., February 27 and 3 p.m., February 28. Concerts sponsored by First Bank and the Art on the Square Foundation. M a s t e r w o r k s C h o r a l e i s s e t t o p re s e n t t h e m o s t popular concert of the year to include dazzling performances by the Masterworks Children's Choruses and solo performances by chorale members and principal singers. The performance will be accompanied by Susan Niederer on piano and a jazz combo featuring professional musicians.
A tradition in the Metro East for over 40 years, this y e a r ’ s B ro a d w a y P o p s ! c o n c e r t , c o n d u c t e d b y D r. Stephen Mager, will highlight musical numbers from “Oklahoma,” “Guys and Dolls” and “Candide,” plus hits by Duke Ellington and “The Best of Big Band” medley. The audience will also have the opportunity to hear Masterworks’ principal singers: Tenor Jeff Ballard and Alto Andrea Lair. For the past few years, the chorale has provided the opportunity for young professional musicians to serve as “principal singers,” that is, paid section leaders who, by virtue of their musical skills, assist the chorus vocally and artistically. The benefits for chorus and principals are reciprocal: The chorale is strengthened by the addition of these fine young voices, and the principal singers in turn are
afforded valuable experience as leaders, vocal coaches, and soloists. One of the area’s most esteemed choral ensembles, the Masterworks Chorale pursues its mission to “celebrate the transcendent and transforming power of choral m u s i c b y p re s e n t i n g a r t i s t i c p e r f o r m a n c e s f o r t h e education, entertainment, and enrichment of its singers, its patrons, and the greater Metro-East community.” Tickets for the Broadway concert in advance are $15 for adults; $10 for Seniors and Military; $5 for students and can be purchased by calling (618) 304-9094.
