A year of heartache, a year of hope Cindy Winters looks back on the first anniversary of the death of her husband peace, hope and joy in spite of life’s darkest days. Knowing and trusting Him is the one thing that makes sense when nothing else does. This summer I felt prompted by God to start a ministry to help others going through loss or possibly overwhelmed by their situation in life. With the help of some incredible friends, Grace and Hope Ministries was founded in July. Our mission is to help others find God’s grace through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and to experience lasting hope regardless of their circumstances in life. I truly believe that tragedy does not have to be the defining factor in our lives but rather with God’s help we can use it to define the rest of our lives for good. I want to encourage others to find the good in their life even when it seems like there isn’t any left. On our Web site www.graceandhopeminstries. org people can connect with others, read devotionals that I post and hopefully find the encouragement that they need. In addition, I travel some, speaking at various venues, sharing the message of grace and hope. One of the beautiful blessings that has come out of this tragedy is how the people in my church and community have supported my family during our darkest days. When I stop and consider all the love that has been poured out upon us, it is simply overwhelming. Everyone’s concern has been a warm blanket for our souls. On Sunday, March 7, at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., I will be sharing some of my heart with the people in my church and community. This event will be at First Baptist Church of Maryville and everyone is invited to attend. I want to express my thanks and some of my reflections and thoughts from the last year. I have no doubt that this day will be healing, connecting and refreshing. It is my desire for people from all over our area to come together at this event to make a strong statement about tragedy…that it can bring out the good in all of us.”

ome times we wish our time away, hoping the clock will speed up so we can either get to an event we are anxious for or get past a difficult time. We forget that time is precious and we should be grateful for every moment and live it to its fullest.
An example of how time passes so quickly is maybe no more evident than the fact that on Monday, March 8, 2010, it will be one year since the unbelievable happened at First Baptist Church of Maryville. Pastor Fred Winters was bringing the message to his parishioners during the 8 a.m. service when he was shot and killed. On that fateful day, it seemed that time stood still for those who witnessed the incident. When a tragedy such as this happens, people tend to replay the events over and over wondering how a split second can change life forever. On that day, Sunday, M a rc h 8 , 2 0 0 9 , t h a t i s e x a c t l y w h a t happened. For those who witnessed the incident, for those who attend First Baptist Church of Maryville, for those in the town of Maryville and surrounding communities, and for countless others that heard the news that fateful day and still remember it like it happened yesterday, life did change. Life continues, however. It must. But, for many of us, the impact isn’t as much of a daily reminder as it is for those closest to Pastor Fred Winters. Maybe no more so than for his wife, Cindy Winters, and their two daughters. As she graciously did shortly after the death of her husband, Cindy once again has made herself available to share with readers what has transpired over the past year. She shares how this has affected her and her children’s lives and what she is doing to help herself, her daughters and those around her to heal. As it is Cindy’s calling in life, she has turned this tragedy and painful time into a positive outcome by reaching out to others in need and also has begun a ministry, partly in memory of her husband and partly as a way to show others how they can turn to God in every instance, no matter the circumstances. Following are Cindy’s words of her insight over the past year, how she and her daughters are coping and some beautiful words of faith and healing: “This past year has undoubtedly been the most difficult that I have ever had to face. I think it can best be described as an “emotional roller coaster” full of highs, lows and many surprises. As I reflect back on all that I have experienced, I can honestly say that along with

The anniversary program the pain I have seen so many positives. Life has taken on sweetness and a deeper meaning that I have found precious. Realizing how short life can be and how suddenly it can end has given me a stronger resolve to live in an intentional and passionate manner. It’s easy to miss how rich the simple things in life are. At the same time, nothing could have prepared me for how difficult this year has been. I have had to face so many new, challenging experiences. Single parenting, household adjustments, and just the ache of being alone are only a few of the issues I now deal with. Perhaps the hardest of this loss is how it has affected my children and having to watch
them suffer. There’s not a book or seminar available that could have ever prepared me for how helpless I have felt as a mother to ease the pain of my girls. I have seen them show much courage and strength in the face of tremendous grief and for that I am grateful to God. My relationship with Jesus has truly been the sustaining force in my life. I don’t say that flippantly or because I feel like I have to. It’s just the plain truth. I cling to Jesus for everything and I have felt His love and strength in so many ways. That doesn’t mean that I haven’t been upset with the circumstances around me or that I don’t occasionally get disillusioned, but what a relationship with God’s Son affords me is
Cindy has been open and honest about sharing her thoughts and feelings with the community and that is greatly appreciated. Blessings and peace are extended to Cindy and her children, First Baptist Church of Maryville and the community at large. Rev. Fred Winters is still remembered, still honored and is still extending the legacy that he wanted to exemplify in his life. First Baptist Church of Maryville is extending an invitation to anyone who would like to participate on Sunday, March 7. Please join the congregation for one of two special services marking the one year anniversary of the events that took place on March 8, 2009. Cindy Winters will be speaking about the grace and hope God has given to help her and her daughters t h ro u g h t h i s d i ff i c u l t y e a r. T h e t w o identical services will be at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. There will be child care offered during both services. These services will also be streamed live on their Web site: www. FBMaryville.org.

Garden to present “Images of Costa Rica” “Images of Costa Rica,” an exhibit of stunning images by nature
photographer Gregory Basco will be on display at the Missouri Botanical Garden from Jan. 8 through Mar. 14. The photographs document the exquisite natural beauty and rich biodiversity of Costa Rica. The exhibit will be displayed through Mar. 14 on the upper level of the Ridgway Visitor Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m daily and is included with Garden admission. A political scientist by training, Gregory Basco has researched environmental politics and ecotourism in Costa Rica’s conservation sector for nearly 15 years. He is also a former Missouri Botanical Garden employee, having worked in the Garden’s education division. Basco now dedicates himself full-time to photography and his Costa Rica photo tour company, Foto Verde Tours. His photographs have been published by Canon, Lonely Planet, National Geographic, and Newsweek and have appeared in numerous magazines, books, calendars, and public exhibits. Because Basco believes a good nature photograph should be captured in camera, he minimizes p o s t - p ro d u c t i o n w o r k i n t h e computer, limiting it to the common steps necessary for processing digital images. “I hope my images represent more than a simple documentation of nature,” said Basco. “I strive to capture images that are truly art and that portray to the viewer the mystery, abundance, and wonder of Costa Rica’s ecosystems, flora, and fauna. I hope I’ve succeeded, and that my passion for rainforests and the stunning biodiversity they contain shows through in the images.” The Missouri Botanical Garden conducts research in the rugged region of Mesoamerica, which is known for exceptional biological diversity. In Costa Rica, the Garden has a botanist in-country who leads a collaborative project to produce a Spanish-language manual of Costa Rican plants. “Images of Costa Rica” is included with Missouri Botanical Garden admission of $8; St. Louis City and County residents enjoy discounted admission of $4 and free admission o n We d n e s d a y a n d S a t u rd a y mornings until noon. Dinosaurs to invade Botanical Garden The Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis is marking the golden anniversary of one of its most popular attractions, the Climatron®, by transporting visitors back in time to the golden age of dinosaurs. Feel the thrill of encountering a hulking Placerias, bird-like Bambiraptor or soaring Sordes in an unparalleled environment: hidden in the heart of a thriving tropical rain forest. Witness dozens of these realistic, pre-historic creatures when “DinoQuest: A Tropical Trek Through Time” debuts at the Missouri Botanical Garden in 2010. Since 1960, the Climatron has easily been one of the most recognizable features at the Garden,
noted as the first geodesic dome to be used as a plant conservatory. Inside, lush green foliage, cascading waterfalls and a warm, humid climate simulate an authentic jungle atmosphere. “This exhibition provides a perfect introduction to the history of life on earth, extinction, and survival. How we manage our resources will have a major effect on the future of life, and there are many lessons to be learned from the past,” said Dr. Peter Raven, president of the Missouri Botanical Garden. “In addition to the educational value, there is also a real sense of excitement in experiencing these lifelike creatures in such an awe-inspiring setting. We hope it will evoke wonder, imagination and intrigue in visitors of all ages.” On the “trek through time,” visitors of all ages will experience life in a tropical forest long ago, today and tomorrow. A smooth pathway winds through the 24,000-squarefoot Climatron conservatory, where more than a dozen installations depict dinosaurs and reptiles from the Cretaceous, Jurassic, Triassic and Permian periods “frozen in time” amid the living flora. Encounter hungry herbivores, including a pair of toothy Heterodontosaurus and an eight-foot-long,bulky-bodied Placerias. Spot a flock of bird-like Bambiraptors hovering beneath green cycads, keeping watch over nests brimming with eggs. Identify a large Dimetrodon by the finned
“sail” along its spine, or the threefoot-long Rhamphorynchus by its fur-covered wings. Postosuchus, a pre-dinosaur age predator of Placerias, hides atop a cliff near a bamboo grove, while a hungry Syntarsus lurks beneath a large tree. See the Compsognathus tend to their nests near the basin of a waterfall as a trio of vigilant Oviraptors keep watch over their nests of offspring near a shallow pool. Outside on Garden grounds, a 30-foot-long, duck-billed Parasaurolophus nurtures its three young. A 32-foot-tall Tyrannosaurus rex can scarcely go unnoticed as it towers above the surrounding flora. On public display for the first time, a 30-foot-long pregnant Hypsibema, the Missouri state dinosaur, watches over its nest and greets visitors near the entrance to the Doris I. Schnuck Children’s Garden. “DinoQuest: A Tropical Trek Through Time” is on display Saturday, May 1 through Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Purchase tickets on site or in advance beginning Spring 2010 at www.mobot.org/tickets. asp. Exhibition admission (which includes entry to the Climatron dome, Shoenberg Temperate House and Brookings Interpretive Center) is $5 for adults (ages 13 and over) and $3 for children (ages three to 12), in addition to Garden admission.

GIR announces drag race schedule For racers and spectators alike, the 2010 Gateway International Raceway drag strip schedule provides a full season of great events, including more Bracket Championship Series races and more Outlaw All-Stars races. The season kicks off March 6-7 with the NHRA chassis certification, with the first race of the year being the annual Icebreaker on Saturday, March 20. The first Midnight Madness Presented by Monster Energy Drink is the following Friday, March 26. A total of seven stand-alone races for the Gateway Bracket Championship Series have been scheduled, with Monster Mopar also counting towards bracket points. One of the new changes for 2010 has been the inclusion of several Thursday night slick tire test-andtunes. “Our NHRA Drags Street Legal Style Presented by AAA runs with our Street Car Shootout Series and our Doc’s Harley-Davidson Quick Street Bike Series and we heard from our racers and spectators that they wanted an additional night for slicks,” said GIR Drag Strip Manager Rich Schaefer. A popular addition to last year’s schedule was the Outlaw All-Stars,

a day of heads-up racing focusing on racing for the trophy with the fastest car going to the Winner ’s Circle. After hearing from the fans in the offseason, eight OAS races have been scheduled for this year. “We started the Outlaw All-Stars after our track historian, Bret Kepner, did some research and created a format that would be compelling
to both the racers and the fans,” Schaefer said. “We at Gateway and certainly the drag racing community feel Bret did a great job with the program and we hope to improve on the series in 2010.” Most of GIR’s bigger events, such as Muscle Car Reunion and Nostalgia Drags, MegaBuck$, and Monster Mopar, have retained
their usual dates. One big change, however, has been the moving of the All Harley Drags Association event. In the past, AHDRA’s brand of two-wheeled excitement ran in the spring, but due to weather issues, the three-day event has been moved to Sept. 24-26. The Irish Rovers

Emerald Isle sounds to echo through the Sheldon
March brings in the wearing of the green and the pride of the Emerald Isle as The Sheldon presents the Irish Rovers, Friday, March 5, at 8 p.m. in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. For more than four decades, The Irish Rovers have charmed and entertained audiences around the world with their exciting stage shows. Throughout the years, these international ambassadors of Irish music have maintained their timeless ability to deliver a rollicking, rousing performance full of good cheer, while their songs have
become anthems of revelry and joy among generations of fans. In 1966, The First Of The Irish Rovers, the group’s first recorded live album, was released. It generated enough excitement to warrant another album, and from this release came the million selling single “The Unicorn,” the band’s signature song to this day. Through the 1970s and early ‘80s, the Rovers brought their magic to television with a weekly series for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and later, a series on the Global Network in conjunction with
Ulster Television in Ireland. In 1980-81, The Rovers once again soared to the top of the pop and country charts with “Wasn’t That A Party.” Hot on the heels of that success, the band recorded the cover “Grandma Got Run-Over By A Reindeer” in 1982, which became an immediate seasonal anthem. The Irish Rovers continue to perform in theatres around the world, with original m e m b e r s G e o r g e M i l l a r a n d Wi l c i l McDowell. Will Millar retired from the band in 1995 and sadly, Jimmy Ferguson passed away in 1997. Joe Millar retired
in 2005, and his son Ian Millar has since joined the group. Completing the Irish Rover line-up today are John Reynolds and Sean O’Driscoll, a multi-instrumentalist. The Irish Rovers are still passionate about performing and continue to tour and entertain their legions of fans. Don’t miss Irish Rovers, Friday, March 5, at 8 p.m. in the Sheldon Concert Hall. Tickets are $40 orchestra or $35 balcony and are extremely limited. Call MetroTix at 314-534-1111 or at www. TheSheldon.org. “Frozen”
This thinnest of horror tales asks the question, what would you do if you were stranded on a ski lift, forgotten and left to freeze after the resort staff goes home? It’s an utter bore watching as writer-director Adam Green struggles and fails to keep his one-note idea interesting for the length of a feature film. There’s maybe enough material here for a short film, so Green pads things with a lot of dreary scenes of chattering teeth and chattering characters as Emma Bell, Shawn Ashmore and Kevin Zegers share thoughts of their plight and the odd childhood anecdote as frostbite sets in. Since three people shivering on a ski lift would be about as action-packed as “Waiting for Godot,” Green also adds wolves — you know, the sort of ravenous wolves that hang out at all the finer New England ski resorts waiting for dalliers on the slopes that they can hunt down and devour. Need we say more? RATED: R for some disturbing images and language. RUNNING TIME: 93 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.
“Dear John”
Yes, there’s a character named John and, yes, he’s a soldier who, sure enough, receives dozens of letters from his sweetheart back home, including one emotionally wrought missive that begins with “Dear John” and ends with him vowing to permanently switch to e-mail. And because this earnest romance comes from a Nicholas Sparks novel, death and disappointment hover over the events, ready to strike — and strike often. For Sparks, grief is good. Maybe greed, too, given the number of times he has recycled the same themes. Here John (Channing Tatum) and Savannah (Amanda Seyfried) fall in love in the spring of 2001 and promise their lives to each other. But then 9/11 happens and John, a Special Forces soldier, has to decide between love and country. The leads click effortlessly during the movie’s romance section, but then comes the inevitable loss and disappointment, events that seem overwrought even by Sparks’ operatic standards. RATED: PG-13 for some sensuality and violence. RUNNING TIME: 102 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“Terribly Happy”
This, the Danish foreign film submission to the Oscars,
February 25, 2010
is all moodiness, midnight black comedy and noir mystery. Director Hendrick Ruben Genz transplants the familiar genre of city folk being stuck in a country backwater to a small, sparsely populated village on the plains of southern Denmark. A police officer, Robert Hanson (Jakob Cedergren), arrives from Copenhagen and quickly chaffs with the shifty locals who have the habit of tossing those they don’t like in a bog on the outskirts of the town. Hanson soon makes enemies with the town tyrant, Jorgan (Kim Bodnia), while simultaneously making friends with his attractive, abused wife, Ingelise (Lene Maria Christensen). It would be a simple enough film if we were left to root for Hanson to outwit the crafty country bumpkins. But “Terribly Happy” throws several wrinkles into the old formula that reveal a much broader and cynical view of corruption. By the end, there’s no distance between city and country. Cinematographer Jorgen Johansson uses a cool, drab pallet to create the tense atmosphere. RATED: Unrated. RUNNING TIME: 100 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
“Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief”
Uma Thurman with snakes for hair and a killer stare is almost enough on her own to make this Greek-myth-inspired adventure worth seeing. Throw in the absurdity of former James Bond smoothie Pierce Brosnan, now put out to stud as a mythical centaur with a horse’s rump, and this latest supplicant for the Harry Potter fantasy crowd has two decent elements in its favor. The trouble with this return to youth fantasy by director Chris Columbus, who made the first two “Harry Potter” flicks, is that for every worthwhile moment, there’s a clunker merely filling up time, or worse, wasting it. Based on the first book in Rick Riordan’s fantasy series, the movie stars Logan Lerman as Percy, a teen who learns he’s the demigod son of Poseidon, lord of the sea. Falsely accused of stealing boss god Zeus’ lightning bolt, Percy travels America with two fellow young heroes (Brandon T. Jackson and Alexandra Daddario) to save his mom (Catherine Keener) from the underworld and recover Zeus’ bolt. The fitful movie has OK action and effects, but it lacks spark. With Steve Coogan, Rosario Dawson, Sean Bean, Kevin McKidd. RATED: PG for action violence and peril, some scary images
and suggestive material, and mild language.’ RUNNING TIME: 119 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“Valentine’s Day”
Gauzily wrapped in stars and roses, Garry Marshall’s “Valentine’s Day” is exactly what it professes to be: an overdose of sentimentality. A Hallmark card of a film, it’s a calculated ploy of comfortable predictability and general cheerfulness. The stars spill out as if from a clown car. They’re too numerous to name, but Ashton Kutcher, as a florist, is at the center. Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Jamie Foxx, Taylor Swift (in her feature film debut) and many others find various forms of love on one eventful Valentine’s Day in Los Angeles. Like real Hollywood, there’s plenty of musical chairs. Marshall (“Pretty Woman,” ‘’Runaway Bride”) juggles the many overlapping story lines successfully, but the film is remarkably, sometimes nauseatingly overstuffed. It also might boast the most shirtless dudes in a movie since “300.” RATED: PG-13 for some sexual material and brief partial nudity. RUNNING TIME: 121 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.
“The Wolfman”
With vampires of every kind running around around Hollywood, the big-screen is ripe for a new take on werewolves. Yet despite a first-rate cast led by Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt, a classy re-creation of lateVictorian England and commendable respect for Lon Chaney’s 1941 original movie, this one’s more a yawn than a scream. The tone adopted by director Joe Johnston is oppressive to the point of suffocating. Sure, the players here are swept up in the story of a man bearing a horrible curse, so you don’t expect them to be having fun. But they don’t have to be so funereal about it. The remake casts Del Toro as a wayward aristocrat who transforms into a hairy beast after he returns to his ancestral home. Except for Hopkins, who wrings some deviltry out of a pretty silly patriarch’s role, the performers are just deadly dull. Del Toro’s wolfie may be a doomed and tortured soul. But that’s no reason to doom and torture the audience. RATED: R for bloody horror violence and gore. RUNNING TIME: 102 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

Movies
“Valentine’s Day” a little too much By JAKE COYLE Associated Press “Valentine’s Day” might boast the most shirtless dudes we’ve seen in a movie since “300.” Ironically enough, the often bare-chested “Twilight” star Taylor Lautner isn’t one of them. If this Hallmark card of a film didn’t already make it clear, the beefy bodies of “Valentine’s Day” does: This is a movie aimed squarely at women and, one supposes, their unfortunate accompanying dates. The star-studded, plainly named film begs for puns. Should we expect a “Flag Day” sequel? But then again, this is a year that will see a movie simply called and simply about “Babies.” Moviegoers comfortable ignoring the calculated ploy of “Valentine’s Day” will likely enjoy its easy predictability and general cheerfulness. Set in Los Angeles, the film begins with the baritone voice of a “DJ Romeo Midnight” announcing that in honor of Valentine’s Day, he’s going to play “the songs you love and the songs you love to love to.” He barley spins a winner the rest of the movie, but, then again, the aphrodisiacs are in the cast. We have Ashton Kutcher, as a pink-clad florist, paired with his reluctant fiance, played by Jessica Alba. Jennifer Garner, a teacher, is matched with a cheating Patrick Dempsey. Anne Hathaway, paying the bills as a phone sex operator, is falling for Topher Grace. Teen love is represented in the pairs of Emma Roberts and Carter Jenkins, and Lautner and Taylor Swift, making her feature film debut as a bouncy airhead. Our elderly couple is Shirley MacLaine and Hector Elizondo. We also get a little puppy love in a 5th grader played
Associated Press
In this film publicity image released by Warner Bros., Jessica Biel, left, and Eric Dane are shown in a scene from “Valentine’s Day.” by Bryce Robinson. Our freelancers include Jamie Foxx as a cynical sports reporter, Kathy Bates as his boss, Eric Dane as a Brett Favre-esque retiring quarterback, Queen Latifah as his agent, Jennifer Biel as his publicist, George Lopez as a happily married man (whose wife is the only one virtually left out of the movie’s pairings), Bradley Cooper as a jet-set businessman, and his airliner seatmate Julia Roberts, absurdly playing an Army captain on leave of duty. Many of these luminaries will
— not unlike real-life Hollywood — play musical chairs on one fateful Valentine’s Day. Cynicism will be defeated and love will triumph. Teenage sex will be treated fearfully. The kindness of airline workers will be relied on to fathom the importance of a dramatic moment. But — gasp! — who is our unlikely homosexual couple? To say that “Valentine’s Day” i s o v e r s t u ff e d w o u l d b e a n understatement. Not only does it ooze stars like clowns spilling out of a clown car, but it’s gauzily wrapped
in roses and red-and-white cards. To his credit, director Garry Marshall juggles the many overlapping story lines successfully, though “Valentine’s Day” is obviously strained by the excess. Marshall is a funny man who has, in a long career, made some excellent movies (“The Princess Bride”) and some lamentable ones (“Runaway Bride”). The screenplay by Katherine Fugate, working from a story by her, Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, has obvious similarity to 2003’s “Love
Actually” but little of the wit. Most successful is the chemistry between Grace and Hathaway, but with so many swings, that’s a pretty low batting average. “Valentine’s Day” is exactly what it professes to be: an overdose of sentimentality. One certainly can’t mistake it, like one confused 5th grader in the film does, for anything related to the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. But the reference is enough to make one wish for “Scarface,” or, if love is still on the menu, “Some Like it Hot.”
Few winners emerge from holiday weekend By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge A record-setting Valentine’s Day/President’s Day Weekend seemed inevitable from the onslaught. Every so often, like in 2010, the two holidays fall back-to-back and yield a magical box office reaction. This year three new competitors are poised to make a heavy statement on ticket sales. The ridiculous ensemble film, “Valentine’s Day,” earned first place honors, but “The Wolfman” and “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” made fantastic February debuts as well. When you throw in another $22 million for “Avatar” (now in its tenth week of release), it makes you wonder who it was that didn’t go to the movies this weekend. It wasn’t me. I went four times (including finally catching up to Mel Gibson’s return in “The Edge of Darkness”). I started with “The Wolfman,” a remake that no one in particular was clamoring for. I do remember thinking that Benicio Del Toro was a smart casting choice when this film was announced, but he, and talented co-star Emily

ROBERT’S RANKING: two and a half stars out of four. Blunt, are rather unremarkable in this especially violent film. I have to admit that it’s nice to see Anthony Hopkins play a sleazeball, but there is nothing in this movie worth reporting on. Skip it entirely. Like a fool, I watched “Valentine’s Day” on the Friday it was released. I felt more foolish once I’d finished watching it, though. You can fill a picture with two dozen famous actors (like Julia Roberts, Jessica Alba, Taylor Swift, Bradley Cooper, and Jamie Foxx), but they
still have to be able to do the things we expect of them. Garry Marshall’s film is especially thin on development, but it does manage to link together all of its characters – even those that feel out of place, like George Lopez and Queen Latifah. You can skip this one, too, but be warned that it’s already too late to avoid it completely. Rumor has it that the studio is already working up an all-star cast for a New Year’s Eve-inspired movie. This opens a whole calendar of possibilities that I, for one, could do without. “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” is a children’s book series by author Rick Riordan. “The Lightning Thief” is the first installment in that series. You can think of it as “Harry Potter Lite”, mainly due to the narrative organization imposed by director Chris Columbus, helmer of this freshman effort and Harry’s first two pictures. Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) is a dyslexic private school student who suddenly finds himself in water over his head as the son of Greek god Poseidon. The demigod, together with his satyr protector, Grover (Brandon T.
Jackson), and warrior gal pal Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), is charged with returning the lost lightning bolt of Zeus to Mount Olympus before war is begun between the gods over its absence. In order to recover and return the bolt, they undertake many adventurous tasks centered around the most popular stories of Greek mythology (Medusa, the minotaur, the time-stalling lotus eaters). Using such devices as Hermes’ winged shoes and Persephone’s hidden pearls, they are able to journey into the Underworld, which is cheekily buried beneath Hollywood, and save the world from the awesome destruction it would suffer by the spoiled Olympians. There is merit to the history the film teaches as it entertains, but if you aren’t a fan of the books, this movie might be a bit confusing to you. It throws a lot of information at you with the assumption that most movie-going audiences are just there to take things at face value and wait for the explosions to start. I would have liked something slightly more grown-up, though Luke (Jake Abel), the series’ true antagonist, has the makings of a great villain.

Winter in a summer place What’s going on at the Lake of the Ozarks By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge The snow keeps falling and the temperatures keep dropping and spring seems to be nowhere in sight. You may not be thinking “let’s head to the lake!” as the first suggestion on things to do this winter, but there are a number of events going on in the Ozarks. Many of the resorts, restaurants, and activities at the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks are open for your enjoyment, even if being outside isn’t really an option. Maybe you are one of those extreme sports lovers or just really love to be crazy. If so, maybe you should consider “taking the plunge” or at least being a spectator at this fun and wild event. On Saturday, Feb. 27, the 15th annual Polar Plunge guarantees colorful visuals and heartwarming stories as crazily costumed participants plunge into the frigid waters of the Lake of the Ozarks to raise money for the athletes of Special Olympics Missouri. This year’s goal: 600 Plungers, 140 Strutters (in the 5K walk/run) and $170,000. The top individual fundraiser will receive a three-day houseboat vacation. The participants with the most original costume will win the coveted Golden Plunger Award.
Some recent costumes have included the Three Little Pigs, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Hula Girls (and Guys), the Energizer Bunny, Blues Brothers, Blue Man (and Woman) Group, plus penguins and pirates – and there’s always at least one Elvis. Registration starts at noon, and the plunging will begin at 2:30 p.m. For more info please visit www. somo.org/lozplunge. Maybe you are a Beatles fan or know someone who is. There’s a reason Liverpool Legends is considered the BEST Beatles tribute band in the world—because it is. Don’t miss the return engagement of Liverpool Legends for two unforgettable shows: 8 p.m., on both Friday, March 5 and Saturday, March 6, at the Main Street Music Hall. Louise Harrison, sister of the late George Harrison, personally selected these John, Paul, George and Ringo look-alikes, play-alikes and sound-alikes. When they’re not on the road, Liverpool Legends perform at the Starlite Theatre in Branson, where the group has been voted Best New Show, Best Band and Best Show in Branson. They cover the entire career of the Beatles and the solo years, with precise attention to every musical detail, costume changes, vintage instruments and special effects. It’s almost like seeing the real thing. Tickets: $25 for adults, $15 for children 12 or younger; premium seating will be $30 for adults, $20 for children 12 or younger; available at the Lake of the Ozarks Convention & Visitors Bureau, 5815 Highway 54, or call 800- FUN-LAKE or (573) 3481599. Whether you are Irish or not, you will be for the day on Saturday, March 13, as you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by lake or land. At 11:30 a.m., watch colorfully decorated boats create a unique lineup down the Gravois Arm during the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on the Water. Then, at 1 p.m., head over to the Historic Bagnell Dam Strip for the 26th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, sponsored by the Bagnell Dam Strip Association, featuring more than 100 floats. More than 1,200 weddings take place at the Lake of the Ozarks every year. To help all those brides have the most marvelous and memorable wedding, the Lake of the Ozarks Wedding Association presents its second Lake of the Ozarks Biannual Bridal Stroll,
Sunday, March 21, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It’s going to be a fun and exciting event for the bride and up to two guests, who will be chauffeured in a tour bus around the Lake, sampling fabulous food and wine, and visiting with caterers, photographers, florists, jewelers, cake designers, DJs and other weddingrelated vendors. Also included is an hour-long lake cruise plus the chance to win fabulous prizes! Just $25 per person. For details: www.lakeozarkweddingguide.com. If you are a fan of Southern Gospel, this event is a must see. Southern Gospel music reaches deep into your soul and gets you up on your feet. Discover its power at the 12th annual Great Lake of the Ozarks Gospel Sing, March 25 to 27, featuring legendary acts including the Perry’s, the Ball Brothers, the Dove Brothers, Higher Power Quartet, the Martins, the Booth Brothers and the Lesters. The sing will be at 7 p.m. and 1 p.m. at the Main Street Music Hall in Osage Beach; $12 to $16 for single tickets, $50 to $65 for all four shows. For info: www.greatlakeoftheozarksgospelsing.com. Travel Travel briefs Airline on-time arrivals in 2009 best since 2003 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A new government report says airlines were on-time for 80 percent of t h e i r f l i g h t s l a s t y e a r. T h a t ’ s their best record since 2003. The Tr a n s p o r t a t i o n Department report released Friday says Hawaiian Airlines h a d t h e b e s t re c o rd l a s t y e a r, followed by Southwest and Alaska Airlines. United had the best record of the big international carriers. The month of December was tough, though, with just 72 percent of flights arriving ontime. Major snowstorms made airline operations difficult. The DOT also said the mishandled baggage rate for last year was the lowest since 2004.
Colorado ski towns enforcing rental lodging taxes DENVER (AP) — Colorado mountain towns whose lodging tax collections have suffered along with the travel industry are trying to make sure homeowners who rent out rooms pay their fare share to the government. “They are essentially hotels, and they need to be paying taxes like hotels,” said Telluride Town Manager Frank Bell. One of Bell’s employees trolls va ca ti o n re n t a l We b s i t e s l i k e VRBO.com and Craigslist.com to find private renters violating tax laws or zoning restrictions that bar nightly rentals. “I think it would be conservative to say there a re h u n d re d s o f t h o u s a n d s o f dollars being missed out in Colorado alone,” said Joyce Burford, executive director of the Colorado Association of Ski Towns. The association’s board of directors recently decided to hire an expert to seek out private renters in resort towns and make sure they are following local licensing and
tax rules. The expert also will develop a uniform strategy for towns to track private rentals and enforce local laws. Te l l u r i d e i s w a t c h i n g a b o u t 400 private rental homes. In Steamboat Springs, all but about 30 of 450 private renters as of late last year had begun paying taxes, and about 100 of 600 private rentals counted in Breckenridge were not licensed or paying taxes, The Denver Post reported. Breckenridge Town Manager Ti m G a g e n s a i d m a n y o f t h e violators in his town are out-ofstate owners who don’t realize they need to be licensed and pay taxes.
American Airlines to charge $50 for coach standby DALLAS (AP) — Next time you think about flying standby on American Airlines, be prepared to give the gate agent your name and $50. The days of hanging around the agent’s desk, hoping for a free switch to an earlier flight are over at American for many passengers. T h e n a t i o n ’ s s e c o n d - l a rg e s t a i r l i n e s a i d We d n e s d a y t h a t starting with tickets bought on Feb. 22, only elite frequent fliers, travelers in first or business class, military personnel and people who bought pricey coach tickets will be allowed to fly standby for free. Everyone else switching flights on their day of travel will have to pay $50 to get a confirmed seat. In announcing the change, Fort Wo r t h , Te x a s - b a s e d A m e r i c a n played down the price and said it was improving the boarding process by eliminating the gaggle of standby fliers who flock to the desk before flights. “On some flights we have over 100 people going standby,” and their names must be manually entered into the computer system, said American Airlines spokesman Tim Smith. “Because of the sheer numbers, it can be cumbersome to get the boarding process started on time.” Smith acknowledged, however,

“There is probably some revenue i n v o l v e d h e re , ” a p o i n t t h a t c r i t i c s w e re q u i c k t o p i c k u p on, especially since well-heeled premium passengers will still be allowed to fly standby for free. “ I t ’ s t h e p e o p l e w h o re a l l y want a cheap fare who are getting slammed by the fees and now when it comes to standby,” said Anne Banes, executive editor of Web site SmarterTravel. com. American started charging for a confirmed seat change in 2005. You could pay that fee and know you had a seat, “or you could just hang around the gate and hope a seat would open up and they’d give it to you free,” said George Hobica, founder of travel site airfarewatchdog.com. “It’s not a new fee,” Hobica said of American’s announcement. “It’s the elimination of a free loophole.” Airlines have different p o l i c i e s a b o u t f l y i n g s t a n d b y. Delta, like American, gives special flight-changing privileges to elite frequent fliers and charges customers with nonrefundable fares $50 to change their departure on the day of travel. Continental lets some customers change flights for $25 or $50; it’s free for elite fliers. Southwest requires travelers at some lower fares to effectively pay for a pricier ticket. U n i t e d s t i l l a l l o w s re g u l a r coach customers to fly standby for free, or they can pay $75 for a certain seat.
Peru tries to bring tourists to Cuzco L I M A , P e ru ( A P ) — P e ru ’ s government is cutting air fares and hotel rates hoping to draw tourists to the Incan city of Cuzco even though the country’s top tourist destination, the nearby Machu Picchu fortress, remains inaccessible. To u r i s m M i n i s t e r M a r t i n Perez says the promotion begins Thursday and will first be extended to domestic tourists before being offered to international visitors. Perez says the offer will include 50 percent price cuts for air fares to Cuzco and rooms at the city’s main hotels. Officials are trying to restore a rail line to Machu Picchu that was damaged by rain-fueled landslides and floods in late January. The train is the only route to or from Machu Picchu and some 4,000 tourists were stranded for up five days in villages near the ruins.
Celine Dion coming back to Vegas for 3-year stint LAS VEGAS (AP) — Celine D i o n i s re t u r n i n g t o t h e L a s Vegas Strip in 2011 to begin a three-year run at Caesars Palace. The new show begins March 15, 2011, with tickets for the first 54 performances going on sale Friday. Officials say ticket prices will range from $55 to $250 before taxes and fees. Dion says the new show will feature songs ranging from timeless classics to fan favorites, with a concept incorporating the romance of classic movies. “It’s going to be a very beautiful show, and I think we’ll be raising the bar higher than we’ve ever done before,” Dion s a i d i n a s t a t e m e n t . “ T h e re ’ l l be some truly wonderful moments.” The 41-year-old Canadian singer spent a year on an international tour after her previous Las Vegas show ended, and plans to spend the year before her Sin City return with her family. Dion has since sold more than 200 million albums worldwide and won five Grammy awards. Two songs recorded by Dion have won Academy Awards for best original song, including the title song of “Beauty and the Beast” and “My Heart Will Go On” from “Titanic.”

Putting Madison County in focus Local photographer Tom Atwood featured in exhibit By STEVE RENSBERRY Of The Edge Local freelance producer Tom Atwood has ventured into a realm where only those with a seasoned sense of artistic emotion, an eye for subtle juxtaposition and enough independence and ambition to make it happen dare to go. He certainly knows his stuff — but it’s the medium and the venue where he’s treading new ground. Atwood, who lives in Edwardsville, currently has an exhibit highlighting several of his photographs at Sacred Grounds Cafe in downtown Edwardsville. The exhibit is sponsored by the Edwardsville Arts Center and opened on Feb. 13. It will continue until Saturday, March 13, and feature a different sampling of Atwood’s work each week. “The photographs in this exhibit were all taken in and-around Madison County,” Atwood says in an artist statement accompanying the exhibit. “Many of them capture the landscape of this area, views from county roads like Quercus Grove, Gilomen, Fruit, Pin Oak, Green Hedge and others. The
Mississippi River, the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge and the Clark Bridge at Alton are also featured.” In addition to being a producer of documentaries, Atwood, 53, is an instructor at SIUE and a well-known name among the cross country crowd, his photos and videos frequently appearing at www. mudmountain.org. Both his son Riley, who is a student at Truman State University, and his daughter Ellen, an Edwardsville High School senior, are active in the sport. In years past, Atwood was a reporter for Channel 5 News in St.
Louis. He has also worked for the CWK Network out of Atlanta. The exhibit at Sacred Grounds, entitled “Madison County,” will feature six photos each week and include information about the artist and thumbnail photos of his other work. The photos themselves are large at 16-inches by 24-inches and even larger when framed at 18inches by 24-inches. Framed prints at the exhibit can be purchased. Unframed prints can also be purchased online at Atwood’s Web site, located at www.tomatwood. smugmug.com. Framing and
printing was done with the help of contacts from across the river. In an announcement about the showing, Atwood said while the scenery may not be striking, it is still beautiful — even breathtaking at times. His photographs, he said, focus on “gently rolling hills and valleys, broad expanses of fields and plains, farms under a big sky and the powerful river that makes up the county’s western border.” Some of what motives him is simply the urge to capture nature and the visual appeal of the area. He is also a relative late-comer to the world of digital photography, having worked mostly with film up until last year. It also made sense economically to focus on Madison
County rather than traveling long distances just to capture a few photographs, he said. As Atwood puts it, while there a re n o m a j e s t i c , s n o w c a p p e d mountains, no sunsets sinking into the sea and no grand canyons, there is something worth appreciating. “For those of us who live here, I think the beauty of Madison County too often goes unnoticed,” Atwood said. As for the newness of it, Atwood said it’s the first photo exhibit he’s done since his college days 30 years ago. Even then it wasn’t quite like this. “I’m really kind of excited and nervous about this. I’ve never done this before,” he said.
Two works by Tom Atwood.

“Menopause The Musical” returns to Westport The longest running show in St. Louis is making a return visit. Inspired by a hot flash and a bottle of wine, “Menopause The Musical,” will return to The Playhouse at Westport Plaza from March 5 – May 8, 2010. Tickets are on sale now and discounted prices for groups of 10+ are also available. “Menopause The Musical” has been seen by nearly eleven million people across the world since it

debuted in a 76-seat perfumeshop-turned-theatre in Orlando, Florida in 2001. As popular as it is worldwide, St. Louis has always been a favorite for the production company due to the outpouring of support received during the prior runs. Billed as “The Hilarious C e l e b r a t i o n o f Wo m e n a n d The Change,” the original, offBroadway musical begins with four women, “Professional Wo m a n , ” “ S o a p S t a r, ” “ I o w a Housewife” and “Earth Mother,” at a Bloomingdale’s lingerie sale with nothing in common but a black lace bra - and hot flashes, night sweats, memory loss, chocolate binges, not enough sex, too much sex and day-to-day challenges with aging parents, aging children and aging partners. A bond is created between these diverse women as they realize that menopause is no longer The Silent Passage! The show, which has become an international phenomenon, was written by Jeanie Linders and by special arrangement is produced and presented by South Floridabased GFour Productions. The entire cast is local to St. Louis and are all reprising their roles from St. Louis’ first run. Laura Ackermann will star as Earth Mother and Marty Casey will play the Professional Woman. The Iowa Housewife is to be played Rosemary Watts and rounding out the cast is Lee Ann Matthews as Soap Star. “The show has become a point of relating, a celebration of a life passage that launches women into a new exciting phase of their lives,” says Linders. “Most women know intuitively what every other woman is facing with the onset of menopause. They talk about it with their friends and, on occasion, with their spouses. But, when they are in a theatre with hundreds of women and they’re all shouting ‘That’s Me!’ then they know what they are experiencing is normal. They call it a sisterhood!” The women share their ups and downs through a collection of classics songs from the 60’s, 70’s and 80s. Disco hit “Stayin’ Alive” becomes “Stayin’ Awake,” Motown favorite “My Guy” is transformed into “My Thighs,” “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” switches to “In the Guest Room or on the Sofa, My Husband Sleeps at Night,” and “Puff The Magic Dragon” becomes the anthem to exercise, “Puff, My God I’m Draggin.’” “Our goal with this show is to bring women together and empower them. This is an event – a happening,” says Kathi Glist, one of the show’s producers. “It encourages a healthy dialogue about issues of aging and women’s h e a l t h a n d p ro v i d e s a g re a t opportunity to raise awareness with female audiences.” “Menopause The Musical” supports the Jeanie C. Linders
Fund, which in turn, supports women worldwide in the areas of business development, arts and culture, personal growth, health issues, and education. One such program is There’s No Place Like Home National® which provides homes to women and families who have lost their homes to natural catastrophic disasters. “Menopause The Musical” has entertained audiences across the country in more than 250 cities and in a total of 14 countries. Internationally, the show has visited Australia, Canada, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico,
New Zealand, Philippines, United Kingdom, Singapore, South Africa, and South Korea. Critics and audiences around the world have responded with overwhelming praise. Intermission of St. Louis said “What a delightful surprise! . . . Parodies to upbeat Motown tunes from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s, performed with energy and verve, give an otherwise dreary topic camaraderie and support.” The New York Times said “Menopause The Musical has no trouble winning over its audience… because elsewhere the subject is almost never treated with humor
from the woman’s point of view.” Australian Stage review said it is “Ninety minutes of extraordinary fun and an inspirational ending…” Show times for “Menopause The Musica” are Wednesday through Friday at 7:30 pm; Saturday at 2 pm and 7:30 pm; and Sunday at 2 and 5:30 pm. Single tickets are priced at $45.00 and can be purchased by calling MetroTix at 314.534.1111 or www.metrotix.com. Family Focus Would older models end too-skinny debate? NEW YORK (AP) - The models auditioning for New York Fashion Week were undeniably thin. But it was only after the fashion industry started worrying about too-skinny models that casting agent James Scully began asking their age. Most, he found, were under 16. “Things are very seriously wrong at this moment,” Scully said. As another round of runway shows kicks off on Thursday, fashion insiders are again taking up the cause of emaciated models, this time with a new target to blame: youth. The Council of Fashion Designers of America hosted a panel discussion Tuesday night on changing the standard model “sample size,” part of the health initiative it started after the death three years ago of a model with an eating disorder. Spain and Italy adopted mandatory weight guidelines at the time, but the CFDA opted instead for voluntary measures that put the focus on nutritional and emotional counseling. Since then, some models have been red flagged and removed from the runway to focus on eating and living well, said CFDA president Diane von Fursternberg. Tuesday’s panel, “The Beauty of Health: Resizing the Sample Size,” initially focused on whether increasing the size of sample garments used in fashion shows and magazine photo shoots from 0 to 4 would result in healthier models. But designers, models and agents agreed that part of the problem was the dominance of very young models. “You can’t address the sample size 0 without addressing age,” said David Bonnouvrier, head of DNA Models. Among the CFDA guidelines was a recommendation that models under 16 be kept out of fashion shows, and models under 18 kept out of fittings or photo shoots past midnight. Those guidelines clearly haven’t stuck and remain purely voluntary. The current youthquake happened as runway tastes moved from Brazilian bombshells like Gisele Bundchen to Russians and Eastern Europeans, such as Natalia Vodianova, who previously disclosed her weight struggles, Scully said. When scouts first fell in love with the very angular, narrow Eastern bloc look, those girls were illprepared to be away from home in the high-pressure, competitive fashio n w o r l d , a d d e d D N A’ s Bonnouvrier. Even American models were younger — 17-year-old Karlie Kloss, for example, did her first round of shows with her dad by her side. Designer Zac Posen traced the problem started to Kate Moss back in the early ’90s, and said it could take a long time to erase the cultural impression of the waif. It’s natural for a 13- or 14-year-

“needed to lose a few pounds,” she recalled. But she looked in the mirror and liked what she saw, and made the decision to work with her agent to make her curvy figure an asset — hence a brand like Victoria’s Secret. “I had the luxury, which makes it an easier choice. In Holland, I could have gone home and gone to school, college, and had a good life,” she said. “For other models from poorer countries, if they don’t fit the sample size, they don’t have the same options.” Designer Erin Fetherston uses a sample size 4 — but told the AP that she’s often making major alterations before shows and shoots because a garment “is swimming on the model.” There is the concern about models’ and their health, Fetherston said, but she’s even more concerned about the message fashion is sending out about global beauty standards. “We create image content. We are selling a dream and we put the dream out there,” she said. “We should promote something more attainable.” Still, there are signs of imminent change. Models have been noticeably healthier in recent fashion seasons, and the collective eye seems to be moving toward a sportier look, sparked by interest in Dutch model
Lara Stone, whose ample bust and hips have been noted. “Lara has embraced her look,” said Bianca Posterli, editor at Modelinia. com. “She is not drastic, she’s a size 4 and comfortable in her own body — and designers and editors have fallen in love with her.” All it takes is a “hot” model or two to get designers to cut clothes bigger, said Nian Fish, creative director at fashion-show powerhouse producer KCD. “Dutch girls are bigger, they’re older, they finish high school. They’re bigger in their age and DNA, and some of those girls are more popular now,” she said. “If we like them on the runway and then in editorial, we start cutting clothes bigger.” The Netherlands’ Mirte Maas is a model who could have a potentially big season, and that could help further a shift, said Fish, who chairs the CFDA panel. “No one can tell designers what to do. They want the hot model, but if there’s a new Daria (Werbowy) — the last sort of supermodel — the designers will make her work on their runway even if they have to remake an outfit,” she said. But the ultimate motive? It’s good for business. After all, Fetherston noted, paying customers come in a range of sizes and shapes, too.

Doutzen Kroes old to be slim, have a small bust and hips that measure no more than 33 inches, but as those models age — to all of 18 or 19 — they will do “terribly dangerous things” to fight nature and their increasingly womanly bodies, Scully said. Model Doutzen Kroes, 25, is a Victoria’s Secret Angel but says her
fashion-show work has slowed to almost nothing. The reason? She’s too big. “I’d love to do shows but I don’t fit in the sample size,” she said in an interview after the panel. The Dutch native started her modeling career at 18, and was constantly told she was pretty but

Dining Delights
Legends Trying to make a name in Troy By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge The Legends Sports Grill has a lot to live up to. Although they are in a recently built building, two predecessors already shuttered their doors in the location. Will the food and beverage selections mixed with the sports motif give them the step up to survive that the other two couldn’t? Only time will tell. Originally built and opened by Krieger’s Bar and Grill, the first attempt at the sports bar location lasted less than a year. In all fairness, the second proprietor shouldn’t probably count, as Tony’s Restaurant lasted only a week, with the reason for closing allegedly being due to family illness. So Legends Sports Grill is now open for business at 914 Edwardsville Road, in Troy, next to Taco Bell and in front of the Super 8 Motel. If you love sports, you are sure to love the sports theme decor. The table tops are all done in a laminate sports motif. There are televisions at nearly ever booth that are surrounded by a basketball-shaped cover. Guys will especially love the fact that you can control the channel and the volume right there at their table.
Autographed jerseys from the likes of Marshall Faulk, Albert Pujols and a host of others line the walls. The staff are dressed in referee attire, with a bit of their own flair added – maybe fun buttons or crazy necklaces, or the girls wearing a sexy black skirt with their ref shirt. The menu is a mixture of familiar sports bar fare with some new specialty items and larger entrees. Appetizers include chicken wings and boneless wings in a variety of flavors and quantities, toasted ravioli, potato skins, fried
mushrooms, a combo appetizer and Legends chili or soup of the day. Their specialty appetizer is their homemade cheese sticks, pick your quantity and either share or keep them all to yourself. A number of salads make the menu, for those looking to watch the carbs or just in the mood for some veggies. There is a small and large house salad, a chef salad, a crispy chicken salad, a Santa Fe salad (egg, red onion, diced tomato, cheddar cheese, and topped with blackened chicken and tortilla strips), and Buffalo chicken salad (grilled Buffalo chicken strip, red onion, egg, cheddar cheese and diced tomato.) The sandwich and burger list has a lot of variety and the portion sizes are huge. With the sandwiches and burgers, you will also enjoy a pile of fresh handcut fries, either seasoned or unseasoned. Each sandwich has eight ounces of meat. Enjoy a turkey sandwich on sourdough, a hot ham and cheese on toasted sourdough, fried cod served on a hoagie or a variety of other sandwich selections. The burgers are all made of eight ounces of fresh ground beef, served on a kaiser roll, with a variety of toppings offered. The only exception
is the “Legends Burger” which is made with 10 ounces of ground beef. There is a selection of hot “dawgs,” all beef with natural casings, including a foot long. The entrees all include a choice of two sides: baked potato, smashed potato, steamed broccoli or hand cut fries. Pair those up with either a ribeye or New York strip steak, salmon, or Chicken Cordon Bleu, just to name a few. There is a good selection on the kids menu, which is meant for those ages 12 and under. Cheese sticks and fries, toasted ravioli, chicken fingers, hamburger or mac and cheese are a sample of the selections. They carry a number of beer selections, both bottled and on draft. A full bar lines the right hand side of the restaurant, where you and your friends can relax and enjoy a cocktail or beer, or order a mixed cocktail right to your table. The prices are reasonable – sandwiches averaging $7.99, burgers also $7.99 and entrees $12.99. That is an average, some more, some less. All of the kids selections are $4.25. Stop in for a date or meet a group of friends and give Legends Sports Grill a try.

Dining Delights Olympic-inspired meals gold-medal worthy NEW YORK (AP) – Let the games begin. And the eating too. Here are a handful of recipes inspired by the sports to be played at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Vancouver. ••• These crostini resemble people flying head first down a hill on a tiny sled, as happens in the skeleton event. Let them fly right onto a platter for chowing while watching the games. CREAMY TURKEY DIJON CROSTINI Start to finish: 20 minutes Servings: 12 12-inch baguette, cut into 12 slices 1/4 cup olive oil Salt and ground black pepper, to taste 4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 4 ounces smoked deli-sliced turkey 12 fresh basil leaves 1 orange bell pepper, cored and cut into 12 slices Heat the oven to 375 F. Arrange the bread slices on a rimmed baking sheet. Drizzle the olive oil over the bread, then season with salt and pepper. Toast until just golden, about 10 minutes. Remove the toasts from the oven and set aside to cool. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl mix together the cream cheese and mustard until smooth. When the toasts have cooled, spread each with a bit of the cream cheese mixture. Wrap one basil leaf around each pepper strip, then wrap a slice of deli turkey around that to make little cigars. Place one cigar on top of each crostini. ••• There aren’t a whole lot of foods that easily convey the high-speed downhill thrills of the luge. But you can at least get in the mood with these sausage and apple-stuffed zucchini sleds. Also try them topped with shredded cheese. SAUSAGE AND APPLESTUFFED ZUCCHINI Start to finish: 40 minutes (20 minutes active) Servings: 8 2 tablespoons butter 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced 1 medium carrot, finely diced 1 stalk celery, finely diced 1 teaspoon fennel seeds, crushed (optional) 4 ounces Italian sausage meat, crumbled 1 medium apple, peeled, cored and diced 3 cups stuffing-mix bread cubes 1 1/2 cups chicken broth 4 medium zucchini Heat the oven to 350 F. In a large saute pan over mediumhigh, melt the butter. Add the onion, carrot, celery and fennel seeds, then saute until the onion is tender and transparent, about 5 minutes. Add the sausage and apple, then saute until the meat is cooked through, about 3

minutes. Add the stuffing, then mix well. Drizzle in the broth, then mix well. Turn off the heat, cover the pan and let sit for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, slice the zucchini in half lengthwise. Use a spoon or melon baller to scrape out the seedy center of each half, then arrange them on a rimmed baking sheet or in a large, shallow baking dish. Fill each half with the stuffing mixture, packing it well. Bake until the zucchini are tender, about 20 minutes. ••• Get ready to hit the slopes. A mountain of soft white goat cheese paired with asparagus spear “skis” makes for a fine arranged salad reminiscent of Alpine skiing. ASPARAGUS AND APPLE SALAD WITH PROSCIUTTO AND GOAT CHEESE Start to finish: 20 minutes Servings: 4 8-ounce log chevre (goat cheese) 8 spears asparagus, bottoms trimmed 2 scallions 4 slices prosciutto 1 medium green apple, quartered and cored 1/4 cup white balsamic vinegar 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon honey Cut the log of goat cheese into quarters, arranging each on a serving plate. In a medium saucepan over high, bring 3 inches of water to a boil. Add the asparagus and blanch until the spears are bright green and just tender when pierced with a fork, 2 to 3 minutes. Drain and cover in cold water to stop the cooking. Drain again, and dry the spears. Lean 2 asparagus spears on each portion of goat cheese. Cut each scallion in half lengthwise. Wrap a slice of prosciutto around a quarter of apple and tie with a length of scallion. Place on top of the asparagus “skis”. In a small bowl, whisk together the vinegar, oil, salt, pepper, mustard and honey. Drizzle over each salad. ••• Hockey brings to mind two things — frozen lakes and big, hungry players. This hearty fish dish is unfussy, full of flavor and sure to satisfy Olympic-size appetites. PAN-FRIED CATFISH WITH
SMOKEY POTATOES Start to finish: 25 minutes Servings: 4 1 pound baby red potatoes, quartered 1/2 cup water 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon smoked paprika 2 small yellow onions, thinly sliced 1 green bell pepper, cored and sliced Salt and ground black pepper 2 tablespoons peanut oil 4 catfish fillets (about 1 1/3 pounds) In a deep medium skillet over medium, combine the potatoes and water. Bring to a boil, then cover, reduce heat to low and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the size of your potatoes. They should be almost cooked through. Add the olive oil, butter, paprika, onion, bell pepper and 1/4 teaspoon each of salt and pepper. Saute until the onion and potatoes are tender, about another 5 minutes. Cover and set aside. Place a large, dry skillet over medium-high. When the pan is very hot, add the peanut oil. Sear each catfish fillet for 2 minutes per side. Season with salt and pepper. Serve over a bed of potatoes. ••• This rich and hearty stew was inspired by curling’s Scottish heritage. The shuffleboard-like game involves sliding a large granite stone across a sheet of ice. The large dumplings in this stew will slide down your throat just as nicely. THREE-ONION LAMB STEW WITH DUMPLINGS Start to finish: 2 hours (30 minutes active) Servings: 6 For the stew: 1 pound lamb stew meat, cut into bite-size chunks 2 tablespoons canola or vegetable oil 1 large yellow onion, diced 2 large carrots, diced 2 stalks celery, sliced 2 large shallots, peeled and chopped 1 leek, white part only, sliced 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 pound Yukon Gold potatoes, cubed 3/4 cup dark lager or stout beer 2 tablespoons beef bouillon 1 tablespoon tomato paste We Completely rebuild/restore your existing AC in our shop to as close as new condition as possible.

1 teaspoon dried thyme 3 cups water Salt and ground black pepper, to taste For the dumplings: 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 egg 1/4 cup milk Use paper towels to dry the lamb. In a large Dutch oven or other heavy pot over medium-high, heat the oil. Working in batches, add the lamb and sear on all sides. Transfer the meat to a plate and set aside. Reduce the heat to medium. Add the onion, carrots and celery and saute for 5 to 7 minutes, or until the onion begins to soften. Add the shallots and leek, and saute for another 5 to 7 minutes, until the leek is tender.
Add the flour and stir to coat the vegetables. Add the potatoes, beer, bouillon, tomato paste, thyme and water. Stir to combine, then bring up to a boil. Reduce heat to simmer and cook, uncovered, for 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally and adding more water, if necessary. Taste the stew and season with salt and pepper. To make the dumplings, in a small bowl combine the flour, baking powder and salt. In a second small bowl, mix the egg and milk. Gently stir the milk and egg into the dry ingredients, being careful to mix only until just combined. Drop spoonfuls of the dumpling mixture directly into the stew, repeating until all the dumpling mixture is used up. Cover the stew and let the dumplings steam for 10 minutes.

Dining Delights OK, we admit these are our opinions and you certainly should form your own, but it is nice to have a guide of places to eat when you are undecided or want to try something new or different. To send us a suggestion of a restaurant to try, e-mail theedge@ edwpub.net Wasabi Edwardsville 4 stars Okay, I admit that I hesitantly give this four stars as I am not a lover of Sushi, nor am I an expert of Sushi. But, I have eaten their Shrimp Tempura, and have tasted some of their other dishes, all of which are very good. But those I went with love Sushi and claim that theirs is awesome. Service was very good and helpful. Buffet City Edwardsvile 3 stars Huge selection of food. Chinese selections, American selections, both hot and cold. Some really good, some not so much. Dinner prices a little high if you are going as a family. Good service.
Lorenzo’s Trattoria On the Hill-St. Louis 4 1/2 stars The tomato and fresh mozzerella salad is fantastic. The ambiance is perfect to go with another couple, a group or just two of you. Prices are a little high for a typical night out, but special event worthy. Specials most days. Try the salmon and portabella mushrooms over spinach tortellini. Shogun Japanese Steak and Sushi Fairview Heights 4 stars Yo u r c h o i c e o f t a b l e s i d e cooking or dining room setting. If you sit table side, you will share the grill with about 15 or so other people. You can order full dinners or ala carte. Sushi is also available. Fun place to go with a group of friends or just on a date. Captain’s Table Buffet 4 stars Argosy Casino-Alton Come hungry and wear loose fitting clothes. They have too many choices to mention, but
enjoy their carved meats, pastas, side dishes and delectable desserts. Worth the trip and the money. Good stuff!
ahead. Have a variety of sauces, Pappy’s original, Sweet Baby Jane or Holly’s Hot Sauce. Try them all.
RED Kitchen Hyatt Riverfront Chestnut and 4th St. St. Louis, Mo. 4 1/2 stars Specialize in “small plate” dishes, but have a number of full plate dishes. Order three or four small dishes as a couple and share each of the dishes. The “Seared Scallops” are like butter. The “Ahi Poki Wonton” is a great try! “Braised Short Ribs” can be cut with a fork-so tender. Signature cocktails and “mini” desserts. Great atmosphere.
Pasta House Co. Edwardsville 4 stars Still love their house salad, a St. Louis favorite for many years. Good pastas, steaks, and sandwiches. A little pricey for a family meal, but not terrible for a date or special night out. Their rolls are fantastic.
Pappy’s Smokehouse St. Louis 4 1/2 stars Pappy’s is open Mondy through Friday from 11a.m. to 7 p.m. or 8 p.m., or whenever they sell out, which they do most every day, and week-ends 11 a.m. to around 4 they sell out fast on week-ends. if you’re going later in the day it’s a good idea to call
Shenanigans Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars G e n e r a l b a r a n d g r i l l f a re , wings, sandwiches, potato skins, etc. Have a few specialty dishes and drink specials. Offer indoor and outdoor dining. Good party type atmosphere with plenty of tv’s for sports watching.
Troy Family Restaurant Troy 2 1/2 stars A new family restaurant with a large menu selection. Prices a bit higher than other local family restaurants. Nothing really unique on the menu, basic family restaurant fare. Sandwiches, meat and potatoes, etc. Catch a special, maybe a better value. Otherwise, just so-so. Cracker Barrel Troy 4 stars I know, everyone has eaten at Cracker Barrel, so who needs our opinion. But still is one of the best values for a family for a decent meal. You can have breakfast any time of the day. The service is generally top notch. Love the “down home” ambiance and the fireplace in the winter. Can’t beat a good Cracker Barrel!
Finn Inn Grafton 3 stars Fun ambiance with fish tanks built into the wall. Watch the fish while you eat. Lots of fish dishes, sandwiches, daily specials, etc. Good fish sandwich. Good service. Johnson’s Corner Alton 3 1/2 stars Have best pork tenderloin sandwich in the world. Everything else is okay, but you won’t pay much. Service is fair. Tony’s Alton 3 stars Known for their pepperloin, they serve steaks, pasta, chicken. Prices are a bit high, so go for a special event. Dress is casual. Have outside dining also. Zia’s On the Hill-St. Louis 4 stars Their seafood stuffed mushrooms are fantastic. The appetizers alone are worth the visit. Veal, chicken, steaks, sandwiches are all offered. There homemade fresh pastas are some of the best. Average pasta dish about $12. Good service. NOW RE-OPENED-had closed for a few months due to fire, but now reopened-stop by and check out the new decor.

"The Bachelor" tells his side of the story BURBANK, Calif. (AP) — If you don’t like the decisions Jake Pavelka has made this season on “The Bachelor,” tough. The starchy 32-year-old commercial flight instructor, who has flown through the 25 women vying for his affection faster than any leading man on the seemingly never-ending ABC dating franchise, says he doesn’t need to justify his romantic choices to the show’s fans, who have been especially vocal that he kept firestarter Vienna Girardi around.
“I don’t have anything to apologize for,” Pavelka declared during a recent interview. Girardi, a 23-year-old marketing representative from Geneva, Fla., has been the source of much drama this season and is one of three remaining women, all of whom Pavelka has professed he loves. The other two competing are 26-year-old swimsuit model Gia Allemand from New York and 25-year-old college admissions representative Tenley Molzahn from Newberg, Ore.
“I know that America doesn’t really understand,” Pavelka said. “It sounds so jaded and so bad, but who is the authority that says the human heart can’t be in love with more than one girl at the same time? That’s what I was taught, that it can only happen with one girl at a time, but that’s not the truth. I was crazy about Ali, Vienna, Tenley and Gia.” Viewers were distraught Pavelka did not try harder to persuade Ali Fedotowsky, one of the four contenders remaining on last
Monday’s installment, to stay after the Facebook advertising account manager revealed she would lose her job if she didn’t go back to work. Pavelka did not think Fedotowsky would actually leave, and doing so “broke my heart that night.” “She rejected me, unfortunately, for her job,” he said before releasing a sigh. “I get it. I really do. It’s such a tough position. Man, it just kind of makes my heart hurt. I knew when she left that night that she was a really unhappy girl, and the most

important thing to me was Ali’s happiness. When she left, there was nothing I could do.” Despite a disarming smile and unflappable demeanor, Pavelka has been one of the most frustratingly unpredictable bachelors in the show’s 14-season history. During the fourth episode, he dismissed four women, even though he was only slated to eliminate one. He likens his rapid-fire rose ceremony dismissals to “pulling a Band-Aid off really fast.”
