People Ladies Night Out returns to Glen Carbon's Centennial Library By JOHN SOMMERHOF Of The Edge If you enjoy a night of pampering, prizes, food and wine, then you should attend the Glen Carbon Centennial Library’s 5th Annual Ladies Night Out. The event, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, will be held 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Friday, March 4. Ti c k e t s f o r t h e 5 t h A n n u a l Ladies Night Out can be purchased at the Library help desk. Advanced tickets are $10 or $12 at the door on the day of the event. If you cannot make it to the Library to get advanced tickets, library staff will mail tickets to those interested in attending. A n n e H u g h e s , p re s i d e n t o f Friends of the Library, said the event provides area women with a fun filled evening. The cozy surrounding of the Centennial library offer the perfect location for the evening, which will include unique shopping opportunities as well as fine wine and finger foods. PRP Wine International is providing wine service and Lunch for Brunch is providing finger foods and punch. Kakes by Kathy, a “Ladies night out Favorite,” will be providing dessert. In addition participants have the opportunity to bid on silent auction items and win door prizes. “Food, wine and shopping, what a great way to spend a fun Friday night with girlfriends,” Hughes said. “This year over half of our vendors are new to the event, with many of the favorites returning.” Hughes said vendors will have unique clothing; jewelry, home decor and skin care products on display and for sale. Catrinas Mexican restaurant has also been added as a sponsor. The event, which attracted more than 200 ladies last year, generated more than $5,000 for the library. “It is a great fundraising event,” Hughes said. “We’ve used the donations to support the library by purchasing equipment and help fund programs. The funds have been used in the past to fund the Summer Reading program and have helped purchase bookracks, tables and most recently a Newton telescope that library members can check out. In addition the fundraiser helps the Friends of the Library award a $500 scholarship to a qualifying high school student. Hughes said the evening would not be possible without the help of local sponsors. “We want to especially thank our sponsors and businesses in the community who say ‘yes’ when the Friends of the Library contact them

for help. In sincere appreciation they will be listed on the event program and the library’s website.” Hughes said. In addition to community support, the work of the library volunteer and staff are essential to the success of the program. “It’s very satisfying to be part of the Friends of the Library Group. It’s their dependability, teamwork and generous gift of time that me proud to be associated with them,” she said. “And the staff go above and beyond creating the best programs and delivering excellent service.” Hughes said anyone with questions regarding tickets, or becoming a library volunteer, can contact her via email at anneh@ glencarbonlibrary.org. All proceeds benefit the Glen Carbon Centennial Library. The Friends of the Library are a volunteer group who share a common belief that the library is important to the intellectual and cultural growth of the community. The members work t o i n c re a s e p u b l i c a w a re n e s s of all library services and assist in fundraising to fund s p e c i a l p ro g r a m s a n d n e e d s . Membership forms are available at the help desk.

Costumed participants from the 2015 St. Patrick's Day Parade.

Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade scheduled in St. Louis For The Edge The Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade in St. Louis will take place on Saturday, March 12, 2016. Leading the 47th annual parade will be parade founder and St. Louis Irish Consul Joseph McGlynn, Jr.; Parade Committee Chairperson Joe Milligan; an Irish Guest of Honor to be named; our Honorary Parade Marshals are Catholic Nuns Sister Rosario Delaney and Sister Laurentia Cusack of Holy Infant School and Parish who have both served their order for over 50 years; Mayor Francis Slay; Parade Director Vince Via; and other dignitaries. The parade steps off at noon from 20th and Market Streets and proceeds east on Market to Broadway and then south on Broadway where it will disband at Clark Street. Market Street will be closed at 7:30 a.m. from Compton to Broadway. Parade units will stage starting at 7:30 a.m. from Compton to 18th Street. The parade, also known as St. Louis' "Rite of Spring," will feature over 130 units, including floats, bands, marching units, large helium-filled balloons, and over 5,000 marchers. A Marine color guard from the 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment based in St. Louis will lead the parade. In the past with good weather, more than 350,000 spectators have gathered along Market Street to watch the elaborate floats, marching bands, marching units, dance groups, animal units, novelty units, and motorized units.

The children's favorites - giant cartoon character heliumfilled balloons - will be featured in the parade. Each balloon will have its own team of handlers, usually employees of the corporate sponsor of the balloon in question. McGlynn noted the support the run has received over the years from Anheuser-Busch, "From the very first run 38 years ago, Anheuser-Busch was there supporting our efforts." The 38th Annual Michelob ULTRA St. Patrick's Day Parade Run will precede the parade at 9:00 a.m. The St. Patrick's Day Parade Run is St. Louis' largest locally organized run. It covers a five mile course which will begin on Broadway just south of the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark hotel in front of the Ballpark Village (Broadway between Walnut and Clark Streets) and conclude at 8th and Market Streets. Runners will then be directed to the Michelob ULTRA Runners Village at The Ballpark Village at 7th and Walnut Streets. Ballpark Village will also be the site of this year's Irish Village featuring a live band, food and beverage which will be open prior to, during and after the parade. Upwards of 10,000 runners, walkers and wheelchair racers of all ages participated in the 2015 St. Patrick's Day Run. There are 13 different age categories for both male and female competitive runners, ranging in age from under14 to 70-plus years. Prizes will be awarded in age categories for both men and women, including "14 and under" and "70 and over." Runners may register online at: www.stpatsrun.org. The cost is $29.00 (plus online fee). All runners will be issued timing

chips affixed to their bib numbers. The chips are disposable and do not need to be returned. Wearing the chip is the choice of the runner, but only those top finishers with chip recorded times will be eligible for prizes. Runners must register by early March to receive a timing chip. The distinction of "competitive" and "non-competitive" categories has been eliminated. Past top finishers will be issued special bib numbers so they can start closer to the front of the pack. The Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark is the official hotel of the St. Patrick's Day Run and Parade. For information on special St. Patrick's Day Parade and Run room packages, visit the hotel's "Hotel Specials" page of its website, www.hiltonstlouis. com, or call 314-421-1776. The Shamrock Village opens at 9:00 a.m. on Parade Day at the Aloe Plaza across from Union Station on Market Street and closes at 4 p.m. The Village will feature a Main Stage and food and beverage booths provided by Maggie O's which is across the street at 20th and Market Streets. Starting at 9:00 a.m. some of the unique inflatable balloons that will be in the parade will begin inflating at Aloe Plaza as part of the pre-parade activities. The St. Patrick's Day Parade and the Michelob Ultra St. Patrick's Day Parade Run celebration kicks off Friday night, March 11 at the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark, 1 South Broadway, with cocktails and dinner. People People planner Museum exhibit focuses on terrorism in U.S.

Spies, Traitors and Saboteurs: Fear and Freedom in America, a special exhibition from the International Spy Museum, opened Feb.6 and runs through May 8 at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park. This 6,000 square-foot exhibit provides a historic perspective on acts of terror that have taken place on American soil. Spies, Traitors and Saboteurs reveals nine major events and periods in U.S. history when Americans were threated by enemies within its borders. It depicts who the government and public responded, i l l u s t r a t e s t h e c o r re s p o n d i n g evolution of U.S. counterintelligence and homeland security efforts and examines the challenge of securing the nation without compromising the civil liberties upon which it was founded. • Aug. 24, 1814 – The City of Washington Captured and the While House Burned. During the War of 1812, the city of Washington was captured and the White House, the U.S. Capitol and other major buildings were torched by British troops aided with information provided by a few Americans. • July 30, 1916 – Manhattan Hit by Massive Explosions in New York Harbor. German secret agents, aided by American collaborators, blew up a munitions depot in New York Harbor, showering Manhattan and the Statute of Liberty with shrapnel and debris. Acts of German sabotage on American soil like this contributed to America's entry into World War I and inspired the passage of the 1918 Espionage Act still in effect today and the growth of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. • June 2, 1919 – Anarchist Bombs Target American Leaders. When the home of Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer was bomb by an anarchist and plots for more bombings were revealed, both the public and the government clamored for tighter law enforcement and more restrictive legislation for immigrants, resulting in the roundups, deportations and public outrage associated with the now infamous Palmer Raids. • Aug. 8, 1925 – 30,000 Ku Klux Klan Members Parade Down Pennsylvania Avenue. The nation's oldest hate group, the Ku Klux Klan, has risen three times in the nation's history. Each time, the group changed, evolving from small vigilante circles to huge violent organizations. They began inflicting terror on former slaves after the Civil War and grew into a politically powerful organization of 4 million that expanded its targets to include immigrants, Jews and Catholics in the 1920s. In the 1960s, they began attacking African Americans and civil rights workers. Today, a diminished Klan is only one among many white supremacist groups. • Dec. 7, 1941 – American Helps Japanese Pilot Terrorize Hawaiian Island After Pearl harbor. A Japanese pilot returning from the Pearl Harbor attack crash-landed on the Hawaiian Island of Nihau, and with support of a Japanese-American, took hostages and terrorized the community. The incident, little remembered today, perpetuated fears about Japanese Americans. Fears that ultimately led to the unprecedented incarceration of thousands. • April, 1945 – The Kremlin Launches One of the First Cold War

6

Attacks Against the U.S. Near the end of World War II, the Kremlin harshly condemned American Communists for softening their commitment to a worldwide communist revolution. The Communist Party of the United States snapped to action, ousting its moderate leader and re-establishing itself as a highly militant and subversive organization, fueling America's fears that American Communists would become Stalin's tool to overthrow the U.S. government. • March 1, 1971 – Radical Group Explodes Bomb in the U.S. Capitol. Protests over the war in Vietnam and civil rights turned violent during the "days of rage" and extremist groups, such as the Weather Underground and Black Liberation Army, took action. • April 19, 1995 – Massive Bomb Destroys Federal Building in Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City bombing, the deadliest act of terrorism on U.S. soil in the 20th century, awakened Americans to threats posed by domestic extremists, especially the virulently antigovernment right-wing groups. • Beyond Sept. 11th – Terrorism Today. In the aftermath of the Sept.

11, 2001, initiatives by the U.S. government to root out terrorist elements in the country have irrevocably changed the lives of Americans. Spies, Traitors and Saboteurs supports these stories with historic photographs, themed environments, interactive displays, film, artifacts and video. Exhibit highlights include: • A timeline that traces over 80 acts of terror that have taken place in the U.S. from 1776 to today, including the Revolutionary War plot to kidnap George Washington, the vents of Bloody Kansas prior to the Civil War, John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry, the 1960s church bombings in the South and the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001. • APL Badge and ID Card (1917) – Carried by operatives of the American Protective League who spied on their fellow Americans on behalf of the U.S. Justice Department during World War I. • Anarchist Globe Bomb (circa 1886) – Presented evidence in the trial of the men tried in connection with Chicago Haymarket riot (replica). • Ritual Klan Red Robe (circa 1965) – Worn by the Klan "Kladd,"

the elected officer who presided over the secret rituals and ceremonies of the Ku Klux Klan. • Klan "business cards" – Ominous warnings to innocent American families that their every move was being watched. • We a t h e r U n d e r g r o u n d Video Presentation – Featuring an exclusive interview with ex-Weather Underground member Bernadine Dohrn, filmed for the exhibition. • Fragments of Planes that hit the World Trade Center – Recovered following the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and used as evidence by the FBI in their ensuing investigation. • Under Siege – A powerful eight-minute film exploring the terrorist threat today, initiatives by the U.S. government to root out terrorists elements in the U.S., the balance between civil liberties and national security, and the impact on the daily lives of Americans. It features a range of interviews with

leading thinkers including Daniel Pipes, Director of the Middle East Forum; Akbar S. Ahmed, the Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies and Professor of International Relations at American University in Washington, D.C.,; Steven Emerson, terrorist expert and investigator and Morris Dees, co-founder and Chief Trial Counsel of the Southern Poverty Law Center. • Visitor Polling Station – This unique computer interactive provides visitors the opportunity to express their own opinions on questions raised in the exhibition about how the nation has responded to the historical events presented. The questions were developed in consultation with the Gallup O rg a n i z a t i o n a n d a d d i t i o n a l historical questions can enable visitors to see how Americans responded to similar questions posed by the Gallup Poll at that time in history.

QuickGlance Movie Reviews

"Hail, Caesar!"

The Coen canon reaches a crescendo — or rather a warped inversion of one — in "Hail, Caesar!" when the brothers assemble a quartet of religious leaders from various faiths before Josh Brolin's 1950s movie studio "fixer" Eddie Mannix. The scene plays like a theological joke: the Coen version of a priest and a rabbi walk into a movie studio. "Does the depiction of Jesus Christ cut the mustard?" asks Mannix, succinctly. His agenda is to gain their approval for Capital Pictures' latest Bible epic, a sword-and-sandals movie led by the dimwitted star Baird Whitlock (George Clooney, looking particularly suited to golden age Hollywood). The question of how God should be portrayed in the film — a mere quibble amid the madcap machinery of a Hollywood studio — has been put off. An early reel of the movie leaves a tiny gap: "Divine presence to be shot," reads the insert. It's something like a summation of Joel and Ethan Coen's films: Meaning is a missing frame, human folly is the star and only the dialogue is divine. "Hail, Caesar!" is by no means their best, but it's in some ways the Coens' most essential. Having long made playthings of old movie genres, their romp through vintage Hollywood here is literal. It's a loving satire and merciless ode to moviemaking, where hapless souls serve no higher power than the Hollywood machine. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America "for moments of mild language, violence and sensuality." RUNNING TIME: 106 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Pride & Prejudice & Zombies"

"Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" is as silly as it sounds, and not nearly as fun as it should be. In this adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's bestselling genre mashup of Jane Austen's classic and, well, zombies, the Bennet sisters don't just have marriage and love and class obstacles to fret about, there's also the imminent threat of the undead overtaking the land. Here, the Bennet sisters aren't merely unmarried gals looking for a suitable match, either. They're trained warriors who can and do protect their homestead. The most passionate, of course, is Elizabeth ("Cinderella's" Lily James). Early on the girls (Bella Heathcote, Ellie Bamer, Millie Brady, and Suki Waterhouse) get to show their bladewielding might against the fast-moving, brain-craving predators. It's actually pretty enjoyable, if a little manic. But director Burr Steers' attempts at melding these genres into one coherent film are clumsy at best. The film adheres sincerely to the beats of Austen's story — the balls, the scheming, the misunderstandings between Lizzie and Mr. Darcy (Sam Riley), the iconic scenes — while peppering most with a zombie scare or two. There is some wit in the simpler moments — a stoic shot of the Bennet sisters in the living room cleaning guns in their day dresses, for example, or the few famous verbal showdowns that are choreographed as all out fights. But that's the best that Steers can do to integrate the two very disparate tones sincerely. Otherwise it feels as though we're watching a number of movies patched together. Matt Smith and Lena Headey, in particular, seem to be acting in their own Terry Gilliam film that was kept secret from the rest of the cast. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "zombie violence and action, and brief suggestive material." RUNNING TIME: 108 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"Deadpool"

"Deadpool" hates its audience, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Nothing is sacred to either this film or this character (played with "I'm so naughty" abandon by Ryan Reynolds), which pokes fun at superhero movie culture, Hollywood itself, Reynolds, director Tim Miller, love and human decency — and that's just in the opening credits. On the page, it sounds like a lot of fun, and it starts out strong with a cheeky, self-awareness. But that wears thin very quickly for the raunchy, irreverent, and very R-rated bad boy property of the Marvel comic book world, which also seems to have matured to only a fifth grade level in its humor, wit, and ideas about subversion. The pervasive, toxic juvenileness suffocates even the more clever aspects of the film. It makes the entire experience a trying one, especially for the uninitiated who might be blindly expecting another "Avengers" or "X-Men." If superhero movies are going to continue to dominate the pop-cultural landscape for the foreseeable future (and they are), "Deadpool" is at least refreshing in its willingness to try something new. It is neither "Avengers" nor "X-Men" nor anything we've really seen before. No heroes are born. No worlds are ending. No cities are destroyed. The body count is still preposterously high, but it's not because some big baddy is blowing up a skyscraper. It's just because wise guy mercenary Wade Wilson (Reynolds) agreed to lend his body to some off-the-books scientific experiments in the hopes that it might cure his cancer. It does, and it gives him super healing powers, too, but his good looks are the casualty. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong violence and language throughout, sexual content and graphic nudity." RUNNING TIME: 108 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

"Zoolander 2"

In case you don't follow the global fashion calendar, Fashion Week has just begun in New York, bringing with it a few nice clothes plus the usual over-the-top weirdness — bizarrely themed runway shows and front-row fashionistas teetering on stilt-like heels, swathed in feathers and smoothed out with dangerous doses of Botox. Not coincidentally, Ben Stiller's "Zoolander 2" also opens this week, sporting everything we just mentioned — except maybe the few nice clothes. Of course, unlike Fashion Week, every element of "Zoolander 2," both directed and co-written by Stiller, is aimed at being silly and ridiculous — like the original 15 years ago, yet more so. And "yet more so" ends up being the problem. This sequel ups the ante so aggressively and relentlessly that you may find yourself pining for a relaxing night in front of a 2001-era TV, watching the original on a VHS tape. That's not to say that there aren't moments when you'll laugh out loud, especially when your favorite celebrity or designer appears for a cameo (is there anyone Stiller COULDN'T get to appear in his film?) But eventually you'll start to feel like your smile is sort of freezing on your face (Botox or no Botox); in your heart, you've just stopped laughing. But boy, those cameos. We begin with none other than Justin Bieber, chased through the streets of Rome for unknown reasons and gunned down, bullets riddling his body like in a "Godfather" film. Before succumbing, though, he manages to send a duck-faced selfie to his fans. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America "for crude and sexual content, a scene of exaggerated violence, and brief strong language." RUNNING TIME: 102 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"The Witch"

Set under gray Puritan skies in a deathly autumn, "The Witch" is a slow-burning 1600s horror thriller so bone-dry it would only take a match for the whole movie to go up in flames. "A New England folktale" is how the opening titles describe writer-director Robert Eggers' impressively rigorous feature debut. The film doesn't just take place in early 17th century America, but it has effectively summoned the nightmares and superstitions of the era, much of which Eggers faithfully reproduced from various historical sources. The subject here is less witches as some supernatural fright than the Puritan psychology that dreamed them. Do not expect broomsticks. But what makes "The Witch" more than a mere museum reclamation project is Anya Taylor-Joy. The movie is in many ways seen through Thomasin, who stands apart from her devote family. Wide-eyed and rebellious, she more resembles a girl of today. Whether she is, in fact, a witch remains in suspense. But we witness how Puritan paranoia and misogyny turns a pretty young woman like Thomasin into a fearsome seductress in the eyes of her family. When the combustible "The Witch" finally lets itself ablaze, the brutal and surprisingly sober finale is also — and more thrillingly — Thomasin's awakening. Drawn by the lure to break free of her upbringing, to "live deliciously," she turns out to be something scarier than the Puritans could fathom: a teenager. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "disturbing violent content and graphic nudity." RUNNING TIME: 92 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"How to Be Single"

Momentarily untied from "50 Shades of Grey" and its planned sequels, Dakota Johnson is again looking for love in "How to Be Single," a mild and fittingly discombobulated ode to singlehood that plays like a "Sex and the City" spinoff. We're back in that rom-com bastion — New York: the fairy tale, cobblestoned version — with a quartet of female archetypes who live in questionably affordable Manhattan apartments, and in a story that revolves around one character (Johnson) prone to occasional inner-monologue narration. The connection isn't kismet; "How to Be Single" is based on the 2008 novel by Liz Tuccillo, a former "Sex and the City" writer. But if the set-up is overly conventional, "How to Be Single" inverts some of the standard beats of the romantic comedy enough to give it a not-as-bad-as-you-expected charm derived considerably from its appealing cast. "Why do we always tell our stories through relationships?" asks Alice (Johnson), at the film's start. She's a young paralegal who, fearful that she has missed out on "real life in the in-between moments" by always jumping from one relationship to another, tells her longtime boyfriend (Nicholas Braun) that they must split. Hers is one of four approaches to single life. Providing raunchy humor and an over-the-top embrace of promiscuity is Alice's co-worker Robin (Rebel Wilson, spirited if overdoing it). Alice's older sister, an obstetrician named Meg (Leslie Mann), plays the part of the careerist woman pining for a baby. And then there's Lucy (Alison Brie), a picky, computer-dating, marriage-crazed woman who remains curiously unconnected to the others, an awkwardly added-on character in the script by Abby Kohn, Marc Silverstein and Dana Fox. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sexual content and strong language throughout." RUNNING TIME: 110 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"How to Be Single" showcases Johnson By JAKE COYLE Associated Press Momentarily untied from "50 Shades of Grey" and its planned sequels, Dakota Johnson is again looking for love in "How to Be Single," a mild and fittingly discombobulated ode to singlehood that plays like a "Sex and the City" spinoff. We're back in that rom-com bastion — New York: the fairy tale, cobblestoned version — with a quartet of female archetypes who live in questionably affordable Manhattan apartments, and in a story that revolves around one character (Johnson) prone to occasional inner-monologue narration. The connection isn't kismet; "How to Be Single" is based on the 2008 novel by Liz Tuccillo, a

former "Sex and the City" writer. But if the set-up is overly conventional, "How to Be Single" inverts some of the standard beats of the romantic comedy enough to give it a not-as-bad-as-youexpected charm derived considerably from its appealing cast. Providing raunchy humor and an over-the-top embrace of promiscuity is Alice's co-worker

Robin (Rebel Wilson, spirited if overdoing it). Alice's older sister, an obstetrician named Meg (Leslie Mann), plays the part of the careerist woman pining for a baby. And then there's Lucy (Alison Brie), a picky, computerdating, marriage-crazed woman who remains curiously unconnected to the others, an awkwardly added-on character in the script by Abby Kohn, Marc Silverstein and Dana Fox. The group is largely confined to the Meatpacking District, but their escapades are all over the map. There are the comic onenight stands of Robin, the pregnancy trials of Meg and Lucy's flirting with her frankly relationship-phobic bartender (Anders Holm). All variously gravitate toward and rebel against the pressure to pair off and marry.

From scene to scene, "How to Be Single" scrolls through tones like a Tinder search, jumping from romance to penis jokes to — most jarring of all — the pain of a widower father (Damon Wayons Jr., as a boyfriend of Alice's). The key here is the winsome Johnson, an assured actress at home in any of the comic or dramatic shifts of the film. "Friends," ''Bridget Jones" and "Sex and the City" are all explicitly referenced, just in case anyone wasn't sure of the genre. "How to Be Single" is best, though, when it pivots from the predictable — when the seemingly destined kiss from an ex-boyfriend turns to heartache, or when a dreamy-eyed Alice gets into a taxi and wistfully says she's going "home," only to be barked at by the cabbie who demands an actual address.

"Race" a bit on the long side By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge It is a wonder why there hasn't yet been made a film about the life of Olympic champion and American hero Jesse Owens. With "Race" out this slow movie-going weekend, a significant wrong is righted, but the film itself may come along feeling a little hollow, buoyed up only by strikingly condensed facts and timelines that bring together many important figures in a fairly exciting chapter of sports history, all told through performances that are both caricature and warmly winning. As a sports biopic "Race" is overlong and often tedious. This story in the life of Jesse Owens (Stephan James) features on the two-year period after he enrolls

at The Ohio State University, becoming the first member of his struggling family to attend college. His mentor coach, Larry Snyder (Jason Sudeikis), sees early potential in the man that one day is known as "The Buckeye Bullet" for his blinding speed. By constant training and an adherence to actual principles of running, Owens become heavily favored to represent not only the Big 10, but the country in the upcoming Berlin Olympic Games of 1936. U n f o r t u n a t e l y, t h e t w o m a i n portions of this film that feature actual athletic competition (the 1935 Conference track meet where Owens set or tied four world records in under an hour and the Games themselves) are separated by two hours of nothing but one-note sports analogies and

metaphors. The platitudes are strangely soft around the edges of this French production. As a criticism of racial inequality, "Race" only highlights an embarrassing chapter in world history. It goes no further t o w a rd s o l v i n g t h e p ro b l e m s of our current day. The side-byside illustration of Hitler's Aryan ideals against the clearly similar treatment that African-American segregation the United States was causing is heartbreaking. That's clear. When the film's second act becomes one of political defiance, shaking a daring fist at the Third Reich, there's no reason it seems to compete except to thwart Germany's policies, represented in the movie by a grim Joseph Goebbels (Barnaby Metschurat). But the kid wins indeed. Owens

took home four gold medals from Berlin and became a national treasure - once he was formally recognized by the White House in 1976. The final medal came for his late substitution in the 4x100 meter relay in which he and fellow runner Ralph Metcalfe replaced their only two Jewish teammates, Sam Stoller and Marty Glickman. James and Sudeikis are both quite good in this movie that is nothing if not a little clean in the way it remembers even a ugly moment in our collective past. Oscar winners Jeremy Irons and William Hurt also have small parts as Olympic committee leaders who battle about whether or not to pull the U.S. out of the Games via boycott. Irons' Avery Brundage winds up at the center of a scandal involving bribes, but even that was

March 3, 2016

swept under the rug. The one reallife role I found most entertaining was that of German filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl (Carice van Houten). The famed director is shown in full propaganda mode getting the footage of Owens to use in her film "Olympia", one that was hoped to promote the German superiority, but wound up being a testament to the Games themselves, a far cry from her early "Triumph of the Will". Owens' legacy, thankfully in part to her film, has stood the test of time. His name today graces the award for the top college track & field athlete of the year and I think he'd be proud of that. "Race" runs 134 minutes and is rated PG-13 for thematic elements and language. I give this film one star out of four.

Music Religion briefs Palestinians renovate church at Jesus' birthplace

BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) — After two years of painstaking work, experts have completed the initial phase of a delicate restoration project at the Church of the Nativity, giving a much-needed face-lift to one of Christianity's holiest sites. The project, partially funded by the Palestinians and conducted by a team of Palestinian and international experts, is the biggest restoration at the iconic church in some 600 years. The removal of centuries of dust has left Crusaderera mosaics sparkling in sunlight filtering through brand new windows. Structural repairs on the fragile rooftop and windows have been completed and art treasures have been returned to their delicate elegance. The Church of the Nativity, located in the West Bank town of Bethlehem, was built in the 4th century over the grotto where the Virgin Mary is said to have given birth to Jesus. Although the Palestinians are overwhelmingly Muslim, they consider the church a national treasure and one of their most visited tourist sites.

3 Ohio churches spray-painted with anti-Christian graffiti

WELLSVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Officials say police are investigating after vandals spray-painted upside down crosses and other anti-Christian graffiti at three Ohio

churches. Tom Brophey, a member of the now closed Immaculate Conception Church in the village of Wellsville says he's putting a tarp over a Virgin Mary statue. The statue's face is covered in black paint and has an upside down cross painted on its body. Wellsville is located northwest of Pittsburgh near the Pennsylvania state line. Upside down crosses also cover a Wellsville United Methodist church sign. A Covenant Presbyterian church door had the word "Satan" painted on it. Remnants of the marks remain visible. Mayor Nancy Murray told WTOV-TV stores that sell spray-paint are being asked to contact police.

Measure would declare June 17 as 'Mother Emanuel 9 Day'

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A resolution declaring June 17 as Mother Emanuel Nine Day to honor the victims gunned down in a Charleston, South Carolina, church last summer is advancing in the state Senate. The Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved the resolution Tuesday. It also encourages South Carolinians to reflect on race relations on the one-year anniversary of the massacre at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal, one of the nation's oldest black churches. Tickets are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. 50 years after a very young Rudolf Schenker founded the band in the profoundly provincial, post-war Hannover, t h e S c o r p i o n s re m a i n a b a n d that is able to attract masses of new fans at any given time. The Scorpions are once again at the peak of their creativity with their latest album. Tracks like the first single “We Built This Houseâ€? are as contemporary as the sweeping “House Of Cardsâ€? (a guaranteed live hit). Also belonging in the category live hit is “Eye Of The Stormâ€?, a track, that transports a notion of the unbelievable dynamic and joy of playing, characterizing the Scorpions’ stage performances. The Scorpions are currently on their 50th Anniversary World Tour, which the band is loving. Not least, “because it’s simply unbelievable and inspiring to look into the faces of very young fans, who discover us and our music in a whole new way.â€? And who, this might be added, experience the magic that characterizes Scorpions concerts since their early days, for the first time. QueensrĂżche first burst onto the music scene in 1982 with the release of their self-titled 4 song EP "Q u ee n srĂżc h e " . T h e y v e r y quickly gained international recognition and performed to sold out audiences around the world. With the follow up first full length album "The Warning" in 1984, and the ground breaking 1986 release of "Rage For Order", QueensrĂżche continued to prove their worldwide dominance as one of the most respected and creative bands of the 80's. In 1988 the band turned out yet another monumental album "Operation:Mindcrime", which would go on to become one of the TOP 10 best-selling concepts records of all time, and set the stage for continued sold out performances around the world. With the release of the critically acclaimed and commercially successful "Empire" in 1991, the band earned multiple Grammy Award nominations and won the MTV "viewer ’s choice" award for the #1 chart topping hit "Silent Lucidity". During the next ten years, the band continued to re l e a s e a l b u m s a n d t o u r t h e world to sold out audiences. QueensrĂżche has sold over 30 million albums worldwide and have continued to break new ground and push their creative process.

The Arts "Julian Rosefeldt: American Night" opens March 4 at Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum For The Edge

T

umbleweeds drift past clapboard buildings. A lone rider crosses dusty mountains. A woman waits by a cabin door.

The scenes are not only familiar: they are ritual and legend, fable and allegory, the mythic building blocks of the Hollywood Western. In “American Night” (2009), German artist Julian Rosefeldt turns an amused yet critical eye to the motifs and conventions of the Western film — as hard and polished as a pearlgrip pistol — and to their pervasive influence within American culture, politics and even foreign policy. This spring and summer, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University in St. Louis will present “Julian Rosefeldt: American Night.” The five-channel installation combines original footage — shot partially in Andalusia, Spain, a location for Sergio Leone’s “For a Few Dollars More” (1965) — with dialogue drawn from classic Westerns, political speeches, hip-hop recordings and other sources. Known for lush visuals and elaborate staging, Rosefeldt’s installations occupy a unique place at the juncture of narrative film and installation art — at once paying homage to cinematic history and reflecting upon the means of production. “American Night,” shot in widescreen, 16mm CinemaScope, replicates the look and feel of genre films from the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. Several performers bear striking resemblances to actors of the period, such as Charles Bronson, Sam Eliott and Kris Kristofferson. Yet “American Night” deploys its Western trappings to shrewd purpose. The title refers to a filtering technique that allows cinematographers to shoot evening scenes during the day — and to “La Nuit américaine” (1973), François Truffaut’s influential meditation on filmmaking. The five screens are arranged in a semicircle, like

sitters around a campfire. At center, Rosefeldt’s cowboys solemnly quote John Wayne and Charlton Heston before launching into gleeful impressions of George W. Bush and 50 Cent. On other screens, the lone rider nervously confronts the ocean, as if unsure of how to proceed, while the woman’s cabin rolls away, a set mounted on track. Raucous saloongoers cheer a puppet show debate between Bush and Barack Obama. Modern combat troops, dressed in fatigues, exit a helicopter and storm

a ghost town, assault rifles held high and ready. The effect is playful but pointed, revealing how frontier artifice continues to shape American selfimage and ideals of masculinity while legitimizing notions about the necessity — and redemptive promise — of violence. “Out here a man settles his own problems,” says a cowboy, quoting John Wayne. “Whether we bring our enemies to justice or justice to our enemies, justice will be done,” responds

another, quoting George W. Bush. “I say the only technologies worth having are a 6-gun and a movie camera,” adds a third, quoting film director Sam Peckinpah. About the artist Born in Munich in 1965, Rosefeldt creates complex multichannel film installations that combine sly satire and absurdist irony with political and philosophical rumination. Though early projects, such as “News” (with Piero Steinle, 1998), were largely constructed from found footage, Rosefeldt’s work since 2000 is notable for its lavish production and dizzying precision. “Stunned Man (Trilogy of Failure)” (2004) shows a bemused figure caught in an almost Chaplinesque cycle of destruction and and rebuilding. “Lonely Planet” (2006) centers on a backpacking Westerner who wanders through a series of Bollywood set pieces. “Deep Gold” (2013-14) adds a new chapter to — and suggests a feminist reading of — Luis Buñuel’s surrealist comedy “L’Age d’Or” (1930). Rosefeldt’s work has been exhibited at galleries, museums and festivals around the world, including the Bienal de São Paulo; P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York; ARNDT Berlin; and the Tate Modern, London. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Saatchi Collection, London; the Goetz Collection, Munich; and the

Berlinische Galerie, Berlin. Organizers and support “Julian Rosefeldt: American Night” is curated by Richard James Krueger, associate professor of art in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts. Support for the exhibition is provided by the William T. Kemper Foundation, Elissa and Paul Cahn, Nancy and Ken Kranzberg, the Hortense Lewin Art Fund, and members of the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum. Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum “Julian Rosefeldt: American Night” opens with a reception from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 4. It remains on view through August 7 in the Kemper Art Museum’s Garen Gallery. A lecture by Rosefeldt will precede the opening at 5:30 p.m. in Steinberg Auditorium. The lecture is presented as part of the Sam Fox School’s spring Public Lecture Series. Steinberg Auditorium is located adjacent to the museum in Steinberg Hall. The Kemper Art Museum is located on Washington University’s Danforth Campus, near the intersection of Skinker and Forsyth boulevards. Regular hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. daily except Tuesdays and 11 a.m.-8 p.m. the first Friday of the month. The museum is closed Tuesdays and university holidays. For more information, call 314935-4523; visit kemperartmuseum.

The Arts Opera Theatre of Saint Louis makes world premiere announcement For The Edge

A

t a press event yesterday in New York, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis General Director Timothy O’Leary announced details for the continuation of the company’s groundbreaking New Works, Bold Voices series — including the 2018 world premiere of An American Soldier, a full length opera by critically acclaimed composer Huang Ruo and Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang. The opera will be the fourth world premiere in the series, which emphasizes the creation of American works, the telling of compelling modern stories, and themes of common humanity in today’s world. The opera originally premiered in a 60-minute version in 2014 as part of Washington National Opera’s American Opera Initiative. It will be expanded into a full-length work for its premiere in St. Louis. Previously announced world premieres in Opera Theatre’s New Works, Bold Voices series include 2013’s Champion, 2014’s “27,” and the upcoming world premiere of Shalimar the Clown, based on the novel by Salman Rushdie. An American Soldier tells the story of the tragic death of ChineseAmerican Army Private Danny Chen, who took his own life while stationed in a guard tower at a base in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. Based on the ensuing courts-martial of Chen’s fellow soldiers, An American Soldier addresses issues of patriotism, cultural identity, belonging, and otherness. Opera Theatre of Saint Louis Artistic Director James Robinson, who previously collaborated with Huang Ruo on the American premiere of Dr. Sun Yat-sen at The Santa Fe Opera, will direct. Composer Huang Ruo has been lauded by The New Yorker as “one of the world’s leading young composers” and by The New York Times for his “distinctive style.” His diverse compositional work spans from orchestra, chamber music, opera, theater, and dance to crossgenre, sound installation, multimedia, experimental improvisation, folk rock, and film. His opera Paradise Interrupted received its world premiere at the Spoleto Festival USA in 2015. Another performance of the opera is coming up at Lincoln Center Festival in 2016 before going on tour to Asia and Europe. His opera Dr. Sun Yat-sen will receive its Canadian premiere in 2017 at the Vancouver Opera. He was also recently named

Librettist David Henry Hwang is one of America’s leading playwrights, acclaimed by TIME as “the first important dramatist of American public life since Arthur Miller.” His many plays include M. Butterfly (which earned him his first Tony nomination and award), Golden Child, Yellow Face, Chinglish, and Kung Fu. Named America’s most-produced living opera librettist by Opera News, he has written four works with composer Philip Glass, and collaborated on projects with Osvaldo Golijov, Phil Collins, Elton John, and Unsuk Chin. In 2014, he became the director of Columbia University’s School of the Arts’ M.F.A. program in playwriting. “We are thrilled to be working with Huang Ruo and David Henry Hwang on this project,” said Timothy O’Leary, General Director of Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. “As artists, they embody the kind of probing, meaningful work we aim to advance through Opera Theatre’s New Works, Bold Voices series. It’s

an honor to be collaborating with them, and with our friends at the Washington National Opera, who commissioned and premiered the first version of An American Soldier. Through the moving story of Private Danny Chen and his family, this is a work that addresses the very question of what it means to be an American.” Operas from the New Works, Bold Voices series have already established themselves as significant new additions to the American operatic repertoire, earning strong reviews during their premieres in St. Louis and continuing on to important subsequent productions. Terence Blanchard and Michael Cristofer’s Champion receives its West Coast premiere in a co- production with SFJAZZ and Opera Parallel in February 2016. Its East Coast premiere will be announced in March 2016. Similarly, Ricky Ian Gordon and Royce Vavrek’s “27” opens at Pittsburgh Opera in February 2016 and will make its New York debut in October 2016. The world premiere of An American Soldier is made possible by the Fred M. Saigh Endowment at Opera Theatre and with leadership

gifts from the Whitaker Foundation, the Berges Family Foundation, and the Ferring Family Foundation. The opera will receive its world premiere during Opera Theatre of Saint Louis’s 2018 Festival Season, opening June 3, 2018. Details about additional performance dates and casting will be forthcoming. About Opera Theatre of Saint Louis Opera Theatre of Saint Louis is one of the leading American opera companies, known for a spring festival of inventive new productions, sung in English, featuring the finest American singers and accompanied by members of the St. Louis Symphony. As of its 40th anniversary 2015 Festival Season, Opera Theatre has presented 24 world premieres and 25 American premieres (including the 2015 production of Handel’s Richard the Lionheart) — which may be the highest percentage of new work in the repertory of any U.S. company. Described by the Sunday Times of London as “one of the few American companies worth the transatlantic fare,” Opera Theatre of Saint Louis annually welcomes visitors from nearly every state and close to a dozen

foreign countries. Although the size of the theater typically limits box office income to less than a quarter of the budget, the company has consistently produced work of the highest quality while never accumulating a deficit. Opera Theatre also has a long tradition of discovering and promoting the careers of the finest operatic artists of the current generation. Among the artists who had important early opportunities at Opera Theatre are Christine Brewer, Susan Graham, Nathan Gunn, Patricia Racette, Thomas Hampson, Jerry Hadley, Dawn Upshaw, Sylvia McNair, Erie Mills, Dwayne Croft, Kelly Kaduce, and Lawrence Brownlee. Opera Theatre has always been known for distinguished leadership: founding general director Richard Gaddes was succeeded in 1985 by general director Charles MacKay, with famed British stage director Colin Graham as artistic director and Stephen Lord (1992 – present) as music director. Timothy O’Leary was named general director in October 2008 with acclaimed stage director James Robinson succeeding the late Colin Graham.

The Arts Artistic adventures Oriental carpet display planned

The Saint Louis Art Museum is hosting a new exhibit, The Carpet and the Connoisseur. During the early 20th century, St. Louis businessman James F. Ballard became one of the country’s top collectors of Oriental carpets. An unlikely collector, he was celebrated for his approach to collecting Anatolian carpets from provincial centers in Turkey at a time when most other rug connoisseurs were acquiring the classical Persian and Indian carpets. In addition to his passion for collecting, Ballard was also a patient teacher, inveterate traveler, and, above all, the first Oriental carpet enthusiast to acknowledge the importance of Turkish influence on the history of the pile carpet. Ballard ultimately divided his collection of carpets between The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1922 and the Saint Louis Art Museum in 1929. Another group of carpets were added to the St. Louis collection through a later donation by his daughter, Nellie Ballard White, in 1972. As a result of these two gifts, the Museum has amassed a collection of Oriental rugs recognized as one of the most significant collections in the world. The Carpet and the Connoisseur will highlight 51 carpets from the Ballard collection, including three Cairene rugs, a Spanish rug, and examples of “Lotto and smallpattern “Holbein carpets, all important examples of works f ro m t h e l a t e - 1 5 t h a n d 1 6 t h centuries. Ballard also acquired two 19th-century Persian pleasure tents that were used for outdoor gatherings. These are also featured in the exhibition. The Carpet and the Connoisseur is guest-curated by Walter B. Denny, University of Massachusetts distinguished professor in Islamic Arts in collaboration with Philip Hu, associate curator of Asian art, and textile conservator Zoe Perkins. The Carpet and the Connoisseur will be on view in the Main Exhibition Galleries from March 6 through May 8, 2016.
