Library receives Lincoln papers Four-volume set presented by bar association By STEVE RENSBERRY Of The Edge The Edwardsville Public Library was the scene of a peerless rendezvous Saturday with Abraham Lincoln, Illinois State Bar Association President John O’Brien, Madison County Bar Association President Elizabeth Levy and Library Director Deanne Holshouser on hand for a scheduled presentation. It wasn’t, of course, Lincoln himself but a remarkable likeness in the form of Lincoln re-creator Joe Woodard of Hazel Dell. On behalf of the Illinois State Bar Association, O’Brien presented the library with a complete, four-volume set of hardcover book editions of “The Papers of Abraham Lincoln.” “Public libraries throughout the state will now have this important set of books that include details of his 50 most prominent cases,” O’Brien said in a statement released at the time of the presentation. “It is a lasting tribute to the most revered lawyer in the history of our state and nation.” The contribution was made possible with help from the Illinois Bar Foundation — the ISBA’s charitable affiliate — in recognition

of the Illinois Bicentennial celebration of Lincoln’s birth on Feb. 12, 2009. S e t s h a v e b e e n p u rc h a s e d f o r a l l 1 0 2 counties in the state, the ISBA statement says. Holshouser expressed the library’s appreciation for the donation and said the collection would be stored in the reference section on the library’s main floor. For his part, Woodard recited a passage about lawyers from a Lincoln document, though its exact meaning was left for the listener to assess. “There is a vague popular belief that lawyers are necessarily dishonest. I say vague, because when we consider to what extent confidence and honors are reposed in and conferred upon lawyers by the people, it appears improbable that their impression of dishonesty is very distinct and vivid,” he said. The works now in reference at the l i b r a r y a re c o n s i d e re d t o b e t h e m o s t comprehensive collection of writings during Lincoln’s lifetime and involved a long-term effort involving identifying, imaging and publishing. “With the inclusion of correspondence, richer annotation and closer attention to
details, 'The Papers of Abraham Lincoln' offers a fresh look at the words and works of one of America’s most admired citizens and opens new vistas on a critical period of the nation’s history,” the ISBA statement says. O’Brien, who lives in Arlington Heights, defended Madison County and the profession in general against its critics, as did Levy. Levy cited volunteer and pro bono work which lawyers often do, from giving blood to providing free mediation services as required in family law cases. “It’s a service profession. You wouldn’t be in it if you didn’t feel the call,” Levy said. O’Brien flatly refuted those who have tried to blacklist the county as somehow being unfair. “This is not a hell hole. This is a wonderful county,” O’Brien said. Despite millions of dollars in state funding being cut for many legal services, many of the state’s lawyers continue to provide services, he said. “This system would collapse without the lawyers,” O’Brien said. The ISBA has approximately 35,000 members.

Are you experienced? Tribute to Jimi Hendrix planned at The Fox By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Jimi Hendrix’s rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner” is possibly the defining moment of the Woodstock memory. Just a photograph of his performance and most generations know exactly what, where and when he was playing. Hendrix was and still is considered to be the greatest electric guitarist in the history of rock music by other musicians and commentators in the industry. He set fashion trends with his flamboyant choices in clothing, buying most of his clothing in famous boutiques. He was truly a unique individual. His talent was silenced when Hendrix died unexpectedly on Sept. 18, 1970, at the age of 27, in a hotel room in London. The circumstances surrounding his death are still unclear, but drugs and alcohol played a main role. Although Hendrix left this earth too early, he still had a major influence on musicians over the decades since his death. Now the public can revisit the music and the memories with the performance “Experience Hendricks.” KETC Channel 9 and Fox Concerts are presenting “Experience Hendrix,” fourth edition, biennial concert tour featuring an allstar lineup of music greats paying homage to the music and legacy of Jimi Hendrix at the Fabulous Fox Theatre Saturday, March 20 at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and prices are $60, $55, $50 and $40 with a limited number of Gold Circle seats available. All prices are subject to change. Featured artists who will be performing music written and inspired by Jimi Hendrix. Include some o f the
best
known and most respected artists in contemporary rock and blues including Joe Satriani, Jonny Lang, Eric Johnson, Kenny Wa y n e S h e p h e r d , B r a d Whitford (of Aerosmith), Doyle Bramhall II, Ernie Isley, Living Colour, Double Trouble’s Chris Layton, along with bassist Billy Cox. Cox first befriended Hendrix when the two were in the 101st Airborne division of the US Army. Cox played in both the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys and performed with Hendrix at such landmark festivals as Woodstock and the Isle of Wight. Cox commented, “It’s a thrill for me to play Jimi’s music for audiences now as it was in the 1960s. The Experience Hendrix tours have shown how timeless this music really is.” Joe Satriani remarked, “I finally get to pay tribute to my hero the right way, on stage with an amazing, once in a lifetime, lineup of musicians!” Sacred Steel featuring Robert Randolph, Susan Tedeschi and David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos are also performing. Various combinations of these music greats will be performing Jimi’s signature songs including “Purple Haze,” “Voodoo Child (Slight Return), “The Wind Cries Mary,” “Little Wing” and “Red House.” A s
has been the case with previous Experience Hendrix tour incarnations, special guests are expected to sit in at many of the dates making the concerts all that much more memorable for both new and veteran Hendrix fans. Past special guests have included Paul Rodgers, Buddy Guy and Carlos Santana. Kenny Wayne Shepherd, a veteran of several Experience Hendrix tours remarked, “Jimi Hendrix’s music has really inspired to push the limits of my own music. He didn’t observe any boundaries musically. He was an amazing player and a tremendous showman so I incorporated some of his showmanship in what I do.” As far as having been part of the Experience Hendrix touring phenomenon, Shepherd noted, “It touches you on the inside and gets you fired up.” The Experience Hendrix To u r i s p r e s e n t e d b y Experience Hendrix, LLC, the Hendrix family-owned company founded by James A. “Al” Hendrix, Jimi’s father, entrusted with preserving and protecting the legacy of Jimi Hendrix. Earlier this year, Sony Music Entertainment’s Legacy Division and Experience Hendrix entered into a worldwide catalog licensing venture to make all of Jimi’s
extraordinary music, including classic albums, never before heard archive recordings, and filmed concerts available through all forms of media. Notes Experience Hendrix Tour producer John McDermott, “The lineup for this tour reflects the breadth of Jimi’s ongoing influence that reaches down through the generations. The guests that have been attracted to participate are enthusiastic about the proposition of performing with their counterparts. That mindset underscores the fact that the Experience Hendrix tour is all about musical camaraderie and the recognition that Jimi Hendrix, undeniably, casts the longest shadow in the realm of great music and great musicians.” Janie Hendrix, CEO of Experience Hendrix noted, “Everyday, we see how Jimi’s musical legacy continues to transcend generational and cultural boundaries. This tour is our way to give a live concert experience that reflects the genius of his unifying spirit. Part of our mission is to share Jimi’s music with audiences of all ages and these tours continue to play a key role in fulfilling that vision. As my brother Jimi would say, “We want our sound to go into the soul of the audience, and see if it can awaken some little thing in their minds... Cause there are so many sleeping people.” Tickets for Experience Hendrix are on sale now at the Fox Theatre box office and all MetroTix locations. To charge by phone call MetroTix at 314-5341111 or online at www.metrotix.com. For more information, visit www.jimihendrix.com and www.experiencehendrixtour.com.

“Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief”
Uma Thurman with snakes for hair and a killer stare is almost enough on her own to make this Greek-myth-inspired adventure worth seeing. Throw in the absurdity of former James Bond smoothie Pierce Brosnan, now put out to stud as a mythical centaur with a horse’s rump, and this latest supplicant for the Harry Potter fantasy crowd has two decent elements in its favor. The trouble with this return to youth fantasy by director Chris Columbus, who made the first two “Harry Potter” flicks, is that for every worthwhile moment, there’s a clunker merely filling up time, or worse, wasting it. Based on the first book in Rick Riordan’s fantasy series, the movie stars Logan Lerman as Percy, a teen who learns he’s the demigod son of Poseidon, lord of the sea. Falsely accused of stealing boss god Zeus’ lightning bolt, Percy travels America with two fellow young heroes (Brandon T. Jackson and Alexandra Daddario) to save his mom (Catherine Keener) from the underworld and recover Zeus’ bolt. The fitful movie has OK action and effects, but it lacks spark. With Steve Coogan, Rosario Dawson, Sean Bean, Kevin McKidd. RATED: PG for action violence and peril, some scary images and suggestive material, and mild language.’ RUNNING TIME: 119 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“Valentine’s Day”
Gauzily wrapped in stars and roses, Garry Marshall’s “Valentine’s Day” is exactly what it professes to be: an overdose of sentimentality. A Hallmark card of a film, it’s a calculated ploy of comfortable predictability and general cheerfulness. The stars spill out as if from a clown car. They’re too numerous to name, but Ashton Kutcher, as a florist, is at the center. Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Jamie Foxx, Taylor Swift (in her feature film debut) and many others find various forms of love on one eventful Valentine’s Day in Los Angeles. Like real Hollywood, there’s plenty of musical chairs. Marshall (“Pretty Woman,” ‘’Runaway Bride”) juggles the many overlapping story lines successfully, but the film is remarkably, sometimes nauseatingly overstuffed. It also might boast the most shirtless dudes in a movie since “300.” RATED: PG-13 for some sexual material and brief partial nudity. RUNNING TIME: 121 minutes.

“The Wolfman”
With vampires of every kind running around around Hollywood, the big-screen is ripe for a new take on werewolves. Yet despite a first-rate cast led by Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt, a classy re-creation of lateVictorian England and commendable respect for Lon Chaney’s 1941 original movie, this one’s more a yawn than a scream. The tone adopted by director Joe Johnston is oppressive to the point of suffocating. Sure, the players here are swept up in the story of a man bearing a horrible curse, so you don’t expect them to be having fun. But they don’t have to be so funereal about it. The remake casts Del Toro as a wayward aristocrat who transforms into a hairy beast after he returns to his ancestral home. Except for Hopkins, who wrings some deviltry out of a pretty silly patriarch’s role, the performers are just deadly dull. Del Toro’s wolfie may be a doomed and tortured soul. But that’s no reason to doom and torture the audience. RATED: R for bloody horror violence and gore. RUNNING TIME: 102 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.
“The Good Guy”
Written and filmed before the economic collapse, this Wall Street drama is about as valuable as AIG stock. It can’t be said to be completely irrelevant, though. It’s about Wall Street lies, only told through romantic deception rather than financial fakery. Scott Porter (“Friday Night Lights”) stars as Tommy Fielding, a broker for the fictional bank Morgan Brothers. His girlfriend is Beth (Alexis Bledel), an urban conservationist who’s beginning to gravitate toward a young colleague of Tommy’s: Daniel Seaver (Bryan Greenberg). We’re repeatedly assured he’s smart because his favorite book is “Pride and Prejudice” — and he’s been to Botswana! This is Wall Street by way of “Gossip Girl.” DePietro’s cardboard cutout characters try to reinforce the simplistic cliche of suits bad, artsy people good. A flashback bookended by an eventful, rainy night, it’s a picture of Manhattan via fancy rooftops, doorman buildings, taxis — and nothing in shadows. One craves for “American Psycho.” RATED: R for pervasive language and some sexual content. RUNNING TIME: 90 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and half stars out of four.
“Happy Tears”
That indie-film specialty, the comic drama about dysfunctional family reunions, has come to this: Parker Posey and Demi Moore cleaning up after Rip Torn’s poo. Posey and Moore manage a handful of nice scenes capturing an authentic sense of siblings grown far apart, yet who still know each other almost as well as they know themselves. But then writer-director Mitchell Lichtenstein makes this sister act change dad’s underwear and scrub his soiled butt as part of the ritual of reconnecting with family matters they thought they had left behind. And sadly, that’s one of the more ordinary things that goes on as Posey’s pampered Jayne and Moore’s stalwart Laura return to the house they grew up in to tend their father, Joe (Torn), a crusty crank slipping into dementia. With weird characters and pointless fantasy sequences, the movie coughs up nothing but the usual helpings of old wounds, false memories and bitter revelations. RATED: R for language, drug use, and some sexual content including brief nudity. RUNNING TIME: 96 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.
“Shutter Island”
Martin Scorsese clearly had a ball making this one, which seemingly hurls everything the director knows about filmmaking up on screen in a blazing, masterful technical triumph. But even with Leonardo DiCaprio leading the superb cast, this crime-and-paranoia thriller is long and wearying — brilliantly constructed, obsessively detailed, yet dramatically a piece of pulp schlock that’s been overdressed and overstuffed to disguise a ponderous and absurd story. Much of the trouble starts at the source, Dennis Lehane’s novel, whose jolts and surprises range from clever to cheap and far-fetched. DiCaprio plays a U.S. marshal assigned with his new partner (Mark Ruffalo) to investigate the disappearance of a murderous mom who escaped from her cell at an asylum for the criminally insane in the 1950s. As gorgeously as Scorsese captures this nightmare world, the inherent gloom of the setting and characters overwhelm the story. With Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Max von Sydow, Patricia Clarkson, Emily Mortimer. RATED: R for disturbing violent content, language and some nudity. RUNNING TIME: 138 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“Wolfman” more yawn than scream By DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press Authors and filmmakers have come up with endless ways to inject fresh blood into the vampire, while the werewolf generally has been left out there alone on the moors, howling at the moon. The big-screen is ripe for a new take on the hairy he-wolf legend. Yet despite a first-rate cast led by Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt, a classy re-creation of late-Victorian England and commendable respect for the 1941 original movie, “The Wolfman” is more a yawn than a scream. The tone adopted by director Joe Johnston (“Jurassic Park III”) is oppressive to the point of suffocating. Sure, the players here are swept up in the story of a man bearing a horrible curse, so you don’t expect them to be having fun. But they don’t have to be so funereal about it. To their credit, Johnston, Del Toro (also a producer on the movie) and their collaborators use Lon Chaney Jr.’s “The Wolf Man” as a solid starting point rather than simply a hook for a modern jumble of action, digital effects and wisecracking characters. Like Chaney, Del Toro plays a wayward aristocrat named Lawrence Talbot who returns to his ancestral home after his brother’s death (Chaney’s guy was called Larry, though, so the formal Lawrence cues us that this remake will be WEIGHTY). Chaney’s Larry was an amiable lunkhead who suffers from a wrong-place, wrong-time bite that turns him into a werewolf. Wi t h D e l To ro ’ s L a w re n c e ,
Associated Press
Puerto Rican actor Benicio Del Toro poses at a photo call at Claridges hotel in London, for the film “Wolfman.” s c re e n w r i t e r s A n d re w K e v i n Walker and David Self hang so many millstones around the poor guy’s neck, it’s a wonder he gets out of bed in the morning, let alone thrives as the Shakespearean stage star we’re told he has become. Clumsy flashbacks and a few references scattered throughout the forgettable dialogue tell us that as a boy, Lawrence witnessed the bloody aftermath of his mother ’s supposed suicide (repressedmemory alert), then was packed off to a nuthouse by his cold and
distant dad (Hopkins). Lawrence only comes home after an appeal from Gwen Conliffe (Blunt), his brother ’s fiance, who wants her future sibling-in-law to help track down her missing man. By the time Lawrence arrives, his brother ’s mutilated body has been found. Lawrence vows to find out what man or beast did the deed, leading to his own fateful encounter with the local werewolf. Combining computer animation and makeup effects by creature maestro Rick Baker, Del Toro’s
transformation into a werewolf is pretty gnarly. The metamorphosis certainly is cooler than that of last fall’s “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” where shirtless hunks turned into wolves the size of Buicks in the blink of an eye. Yet Baker and his colleagues on “An American Werewolf in London” still did the man-towerewolf makeover much more viscerally nearly 30 years ago. “The Wolfman” pays tribute to the look of Chaney’s guy-ina-hairy-mask monster, which
is kind of nice yet kind of corny, since the creature doesn’t look all that frightening. In the climax, when Lawrence goes wolfmanoa-wolfmano with another beast, it sort of resembles Chewbacca in a death match with a fellow Wookiee. The filmmakers go with the notion that the bigger the body count, the scarier the terror. As the gang behind the 1941 “Wolf Man” knew, a single death can be more effective than a hundred if you sympathize with the victim.
“Shutter Island” fails to satisfy By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge “Shutter Island,” director Martin Scorsese’s first major theatrical release since 2006’s “The Departed,” doesn’t match that film’s smashing impact. While still a showcase for its stars (which sadly don’t include legend Jack Nicholson), Shutter Island’s biggest claim to fame is the windfall it found for itself by delaying its release date from last October until just this past weekend. Ah, February...where movies used to go to die. While still the lowest grossing of the twelve months, you can’t too often say that February is void of success anymore. Va l e n t i n e ’ s D a y i s a b i g g e r h o l i d a y every year for movie-going couples and President’s Day is now a draw for even the silliest of tent pole releases, like 2007’s “Ghost Rider” starring Nicolas Cage. Still, a period drama does feel out of place, especially now that it’s completely removed itself from Oscar consideration.

“Shutter Island”
RATED: R for disturbing violent content, language, and some nudity. RUNNING TIME: 146 minutes. ROBERT’S RANKING: one and a half stars out of four.
“Shutter Island” is the nickname for a hardscrabble piece of land off the coast of Boston that houses a maximum security asylum for the criminally insane. Troubled U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) is sent to investigate after a convicted murderer escapes from her locked cell, much to the disappointment of the seasick agent. But most things with Shutter Island aren’t what they seem. Teddy secretly welcomes
this assignment because he’s been trying to gain access to this hush-hush prison for some time. This is DiCaprio’s fourth film under the tutelage of Scorsese (after “The Departed,” 2002’s “Gangs of New York,” and 2004’s “The Aviator”). We’ve seen the beginning of this beautiful friendship, but I’m confident that it will continue for years to come. Scorsese’s page at IMDb.com lists biopics of both Teddy Roosevelt and Frank Sinatra on his horizon. I’d like to see DiCaprio tackle either of those roles, though I bet I’m in the minority given some of the cruel postings I encountered. As the mystery deepens regarding the escaped prisoner (who soon turns up misplaced rather than on the lamb), Teddy opens up to his new partner, Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), an dark, easy-going bloke from Portland. Or maybe Seattle. Teddy can’t seem to keep that detail straight as he and Chuck explore the harsh terrain, creepy cemetery, and odd Civil War fort that houses Shutter Island’s most dangerous prisoners.
Chuck might be mistaken for a coward for how often he tries to talk his partner out of exploring impending danger – especially that spooky lighthouse out on the jetty – but with the asylum’s intense directors (played by Ben Kingsley and Max von Sydow, kings of talking down to the younger man) breathing down their necks, I can’t say as I blame him. “When Shutter Island” begins to move from a mystery (just why is Teddy so keen on breaking into that restricted ward anyway?) into a paranoid reimagining of “The Shining” (I found the surprise ending remarkably predictable) is when the whole thing falls apart. I loved the flashbacks in which Teddy is haunted by his now deceased wife (Michelle Williams) and a wickedly disfigured fugitive (Elias Koteas) from his past. The stark dream sequences were wrapped neatly in a haunting theme, a theme that seemed to rely on being loud, more than memorable. The music had me on the edge of my seat early. I just wish it had gone somewhere.

The Arts Estelle Parsons leads award-winning cast into The Fox
“August: Osage County”
By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Making its St. Louis debut, “August: Osage County” is coming to the stage of the Fabulous Fox Theatre. Described as “bitingly funny” and “sensationally entertaining,” this award winning play tells the tale of the Weston family of Pawhuska, Okla. The play stars Academy Awardwinner Estelle Parsons in the role of the family matriarch, Violet. Ms. Parsons played Violet in the Broadway production of “August: Osage County” from June 2008 to May 2009, where The New York Times raved, “Estelle Parsons gives a superb performance...sends chills down your spine. It may prove to be a crowning moment in an illustrious career.” Joining Ms. Parsons are Shannon Cochran as Barbara Fordham, Jon DeVries as Beverly Weston, Libby George as Mattie Fae Aiken, Stephen Riley Key as Little Charles, Emily Kinney as Jean Fordham, Laurence Lau as Steve Heidebrecht, Marcus Nelson as Sheriff Deon Gilbeau and understudying Bill and Steve, Paul Vincent O’Connor as Charlie Aiken, Jeff Still as Bill Fordham, DeLanna Studi as Johnna Monevata, Angelica Torn as Ivy Weston, Amy Warren as Karen Weston, Avia Bushyhead, understudying Johnna, Jean, Ivy and Karen, Stephen D’Ambrose, understudying Beverly and Charlie, Barbara Kingsley, understudying Violet and Mattie Fae, Bryn Magnus, understudying Little Charles and the Sherriff and Kim Martin-Cotten, understudying Barbara, Karen and Ivy. Written by 2008 Pulitzer Prizewinner Tracy Letts (“Superior Donuts,” “Man From Nebraska,” “Killer Joe,” “Bug”), this grand and gripping new play tells the story of the Westons, a large extended clan that comes together at their rural Oklahoma homestead after the alcoholic patriarch disappears. Forced to confront unspoken truths
and astonishing secrets, the family must also contend with Violet, a pillpopping, deeply unsettled woman at the center of the storm. “August: Osage County” is a show for mature audiences. It does contain adult themes, sexual situations and dialogue, explicit language and smoking and alcohol use. Directed by 2008 Tony Awardwinner Anna D. Shapiro, “August: Osage County” is a rare theatrical event: a large-scale work filled with 13 unforgettable characters,
a powerful tragicomedy told with unflinching honesty and the unforgettable breakthrough of a major American playwright. “August: Osage County” premiered and was produced at Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago in 2007. N o m i n a t e d f o r s e v e n To n y Awards and winning five, including Tony Awards for Best Play and Best Director, along with Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and New York Drama Critics Circle Awards,
including Best Play, Best Director and Best Scenic Design, “August: Osage County” opened at the Imperial Theatre Broadway on December 4, 2007, to wide critical acclaim. The New York Times called “August: Osage County” “The most exciting new American play Broadway has seen in years,” and it was voted The No. 1 Play of the Year by Time, The Associated Press, Entertainment Weekly, and TimeOut New York. After a sold-out engagement at the Imperial Theatre,
the show re-opened at the Music Box Theatre on April 29th, 2008. “August: Osage County” closed on Broadway on June 28, 2009 after 648 performances and 18 previews, surpassing “The Heidi Chronicles,“ “Master Class,” “The Real Thing,” and “Doubt,” among many others, to become one of the longest running plays in Broadway history. The show, which the London critics hailed as “the must-see play of the year – possibly a lifetime,” opened to rave reviews at The National Theatre on November 26, 2008, where it played a limited eight-week engagement featuring members of the original Broadway company. The London production was nominated for four Olivier Awards, winning one (Best Scenic Design). The show’s creative team includes Tony Award winner Todd Rosenthal (sets), Ana Kuzmanic (costumes), Ann G. Wrightson (lights), Richard Woodbury (sound) and David Singer (original music). “August: Osage County” is produced by Jeffrey Richards, Jean Doumanian, Steve Traxler and Jerry Frankel. “August: Osage County” will play the Fabulous Fox Theatre March 2 to 14. Performances are Tuesday to Saturday evenings, 8 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays, 2 p.m.; and Sunday March 7 at 7:30 p.m.. There is also a weekday matinee on Thursday, March 11, at 1 p.m. Ticket prices range from $20 to $62 and are subject to change. Please visit www.fabulousfox.com for current pricing information. Gallery Visio offers a new exhbit
By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge

March 4, 2010
The UMSL art gallery, Gallery Visio, is again offering a unique collection for the public to enjoy. “The Art of Labor,” an exhibit of selected works from the Bruce and Barbara Feldacker Collection, will open on Thursday, March 4 and run through Thursday, April 1, in Gallery Visio at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. “The Art of Labor” is the visual expression of the work that sustains our society: the skilled operation of
machinery, the handwork of making lace, the hammering of bricks and the cutting of biscuits. The exhibit celebrates our common humanity, as well as the fascinating variety of where, how and why we work. The artwork in this exhibit reveals the workplace as a site of movement, energy and color, or the stillness of an abandoned factory. They include portraits of workers that show the hardships and the pride of honest labor. And they remind us that art is the voice of the worker in moments of crisis, serving as a call to action against social injustice. “The Art of Labor” is co-curated by Sara Keller, manager of Gallery Visio at UMSL, and Jeanne Zarucchi, professor of art history at UMSL. A companion lecture on “The Art of Labor” will be part of the Monday Noon Series sponsored by The Center for the Humanities at UMSL. The lecture will be from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m., on Saturday, March 8, in 222 J.C. Penney Conference Center at UMSL. Gallery Visio is the student-run gallery at UMSL. It is committed to exhibiting art of undergraduate students and alumni at UMSL, as well as emerging artists. The gallery hosts art activities for the purpose of study, education and enjoyment. Regular gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. This exhibit is sponsored by the Gallery Visio Student Association at UMSL. Visit http://www.umsl.edu/ ~galvisio or call 314-516-7922 for more information.

Illusionist Mike Super to visit Touhill Mike Super will not only take the stage at the Touhill on Saturday, March 6, he’ll take the entire Anheuser-Busch Performance Hall and turn it into a virtual snow globe. Showtime is 8 p.m. for his St. Louis debut performance. While the audience experiences snow within the theater, Mike Super will devote this “trick” to his mom who loved snow. This is an example of how the 2007 winner of NBC’s Phenomenon connects with his audience. “I was actually a bit reluctant to do Phenomenon,“ admits Super, “since I’d already been performing for 20 years.” But with the popularity of the realty shows, he decided to join.
With such connections, enchanting audiences with his personality, humor and spectacular illusions, Super stood out from the Phenomenon competition. And his explanation for the broad appeal is he creates performances with movies in mind, in the sense they evoke emotion . This element provides a powerful theatrical experience. He, in fact, won the Best Performing Artist award from the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities (APCA), the organizations highest honor. Other accolades include the 2004 Best Live Novelty Performer and the 2003 America’s Best Entertainer. Another magic act that incorporates theatrical elements and bolsters his audience relationship is one in which Super “steals” a car from a local dealership, in St. Louis that will be Bommarito Nissan. He will make it vanish from the car lot and have it appear on the stage of the Anheuser-Busch Performance Hall. Each member of the live audience (with a valid drivers license) that witnesses this event, will have a chance to win the car. Tickets for Mike Super are $30 and $20. They are available now at the Touhill Performing Arts Center Ticket Office; online at www.touhill.org; or by phone at 314.516.4949. The Touhill’s Ticket Office is located at One University Blvd., St. Louis, Mo. 63121. All St. Louis area students receive a 10% discount on two tickets with their I.D. Group and senior discounts are also available. The Touhill Performing Arts Center is located on the north campus of the University of Missouri-St. Louis, just 10 minutes from Clayton. (Exit #240 from I-70). There is ample free parking, and the UMSL North Campus MetroLink Station is just steps from the Touhill’s main entrance.
“Menopause The Musical” returns to Westport The longest running show in St. Louis is making a return visit. Inspired by a hot flash and a bottle of wine, “Menopause The Musical,” will return to The Playhouse at Westport Plaza from March 5 – May 8, 2010. Tickets are on sale now and discounted prices for groups of 10+ are also available. “Menopause The Musical” has been seen by nearly eleven million people across the world since it debuted in a 76-seat
perfume-shop-turned-theatre in Orlando, Florida in 2001. As popular as it is worldwide, St. Louis has always been a favorite for the production company due to the outpouring of support received during the prior runs. Billed as “The Hilarious Celebration of Women and The Change,” the original, off-Broadway musical begins with four women, “Professional Woman,” “Soap Star,” “Iowa Housewife” and “Earth Mother,” at a Bloomingdale’s lingerie sale with nothing in common but a black lace bra - and hot flashes, night sweats, memory loss, chocolate binges, not enough sex, too much sex and day-to-day challenges with aging parents, aging children and aging partners. A bond is created between these diverse women as they realize that menopause is no longer The Silent Passage! The show, which has become an international phenomenon, was written by Jeanie Linders and by special arrangement is produced and presented by South Florida-based GFour Productions. The entire cast is local to St. Louis and are all reprising their roles from St. Louis’ first run. Laura Ackermann will star as Earth Mother and Marty Casey will play the Professional Woman. The Iowa Housewife is to be played Rosemary Watts and rounding out the cast is Lee Ann Matthews as Soap Star. The women share their ups and downs through a collection of classics songs from the 60’s, 70’s and 80s. Disco hit “Stayin’ Alive” becomes “Stayin’ Awake,” Motown favorite “My Guy” is transformed into “My Thighs,” “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” switches to “In the Guest Room or on the Sofa, My Husband Sleeps at Night,” and “Puff The Magic Dragon” becomes the anthem to exercise, “Puff, My God I’m Draggin.’” “Menopause The Musical” supports the Jeanie C. Linders Fund, which in turn, supports women worldwide in the areas of business development, arts and culture, personal growth, health issues, and education. One such program is There’s No Place Like Home National® which provides homes to women and families who have lost their homes to natural catastrophic disasters. Show times for “Menopause The Musica” are Wednesday through Friday at 7:30 pm; Saturday at 2 pm and 7:30 pm; and Sunday at 2 and 5:30 pm. Single tickets are priced at $45.00 and can be purchased by calling MetroTix at 314.534.1111 or www. metrotix.com. Travel Travel briefs NYC mayor: Coney Island to get new rides this year NEW YORK (AP) — After years of hand-wringing over the future of Coney Island, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is promising 19 new amusement park rides this summer. At a news conference Tuesday, Bloomberg said the new Luna Park will open on Memorial Day weekend. Among them will be the Air Race, which sends riders soaring around a control tower. It will be the ride’s global debut. The mayor also outlined plans to turn the run-down neighborhood into a year-round entertainment district with restaurants, retail stores and hotels. The renewal of the neighborhood by the Brooklyn boardwalk is moving forward after the city p u rc h a s e d l a n d o w n e d b y a developer for $95.6 million in November.
Work to begin in March on Dinosaur visitor center VERNAL, Utah (AP) — Construction will begin in March on the visitor center for Dinosaur National Monument. Superintendent Mary Risser says Advanced Solutions Group, LLC of Kaysville has been selected to demolish and replace condemned portions of the Quarry Visitor Center. The contract is worth about $7 million and is being funded by the federal stimulus program. The center, which houses the nation’s premier quarry of Jurassicperiod dinosaur bones, closed in 2006 because of safety problems. Its closure frustrated paleontologists who have been unable to access its 1,500 dinosaur bones. The center is expected to reopen in the summer of 2011. A temporary visitor center is being set up at a former gift shop just outside the Utah entrance to the park, part of which is in Colorado.

Continental’s flights would be from the New York area and Guam.
$600K awarded for Native Hawaiian programs HONOLULU (AP) — The Hawaii Tourism Authority announced Tuesday it is devoting $600,000 to 27 programs seeking to perpetuate and honor Native Hawaiian culture. The announcement of the awards comes several days after a survey commissioned by the authority found that most Native Hawaiians hold a negative perception of the tourism industry and its impact on their culture and language. Authority officials have said the survey results may result from a lack of awareness among Native Hawaiians about programs that seek to bolster or honor Native Hawaiian culture. “The Hawaiian culture is an integral part of our islands’ identity that sets us apart as a special and unique visitor destination, Mike McCartney, the authority’s president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. The agency “remains committed to supporting programs that respects, perpetuates and preserves the Hawaiian culture for both visitors and residents. The $600,000 will go to community groups and other organizations for a variety of programs. They include the Arizona Memorial Museum Association to highlight the historical

Wells Fargo Securities analyst Tim Conder said in a note to investors the news isn’t a surprise since management has said it wanted to order new Princess ships for 2013 and 2014. “The timing of the announcement also appears favorable given recent weakness in the euro, he said. “Price per berth appears favorable versus recently ordered Carnival ship ($200,000 per berth) set to be delivered in 2012. He reiterated his “Outperform rating on Carnival stock.
Research group sees some bump in mountain lodging DENVER (AP) — A travel research group says there are signs
mountain lodging reservations in Colorado, Utah, California and British Columbia are picking up. Denver-based Mountain Travel Research Program, or MTRiP, says it looked at a sample of 201 property management companies in 15 destinations across those four areas. It said Wednesday that results showed occupancy from November to April was down 1 percent from the same period a year earlier, but bookings for February are up 2.4 percent from February 2009. The February numbers don’t include properties whose bookings would’ve been boosted by Vancouver Olympics spectators. Delta, Continental, United apply for Tokyo slots MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Delta, Continental and United airlines say they’re applying for permission to fly from the U.S. to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. significance of Pearl Harbor to Native Hawaiians, the Hawaii Book and Music Festival to honor classic Hawaiian culture, and the Hula Preservation Society to preserve the rare ancient hula ohe, or nose flute hula. Funding also will go toward a project to increase production of taro and other Polynesian-introduced crops, a hula competition on Maui and a monthlong celebration of Native Hawaiian art and artists in May. The HTA-commissioned survey found that almost 60 percent of Native Hawaiians and more than half of Caucasian Hawaii residents disagreed with the statement that the tourism industry “helps to preserve Native Hawaiian language and culture. The study also found that Hawaii residents generally believe the tourism industry does not help sustain the state’s natural resources. The authority last week announced that it would spend about $1 million on more than two dozen programs that seek to manage, improve and protect Hawaii’s natural environment and areas frequented by visitors. The agency is required by law to provide such funding.

Ride 2 Recovery Troy couple looks to make a difference in the lives of veterans By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Thinking back to my early 20s, I remember how amazed I was that I completed the approximate 25 mile “Moonlight Ramble” throughout downtown St. Louis. I can’t say I was in perfect shape, but I was certainly more so than now. I rode it for a couple years and then it kind of fell off my radar. Now imagine riding 400 miles through the Rocky Mountains, and then add the fact that you are riding it the last week of July. Believe it or not Navy veterans Ted and Karla Schweitzer of Troy are doing just that and they are very excited about the opportunity. Although they personally love to ride, the cause Ride 2 Recovery makes the anticipation more exciting. The couple began riding in approximately 2001. Although they had always loved to ride locally with their son and daughter, their first long distance ride began with the RAGBRAI (acronym for Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa), an annual seven-day bicycle ride across the state of Iowa. They were part of Team Navy, one of a number of military teams that participated in the ride annually. They laugh now about that first ride. They thought they were ready, training for weeks ahead, and bringing the trusty mountain bikes that they had been riding for a length of time. However, once they got going, being the last week of
July, the weather was unpredictable. The days fluctuated from humid and hot to stormy. When they seemed to be having a more difficult time maneuvering the terrain, they noticed that the other riders had a different style of bike than theirs, more of a touring bike. At times they were both miserable through most of the first ride, since they weren’t as conditioned as they could have been and they just weren’t prepared for the conditions they were experiencing. Both Ted and Karla knew though, once the ride was completed, that they had to do it again. There was something about the accomplishment they couldn’t explain and they were hooked. For the last nine years, the Schweitzers have participated in the RAGBRAI (Karla had to miss one year due to job responsibilities), and they have learned what to do to prepare, including obtaining the right bikes. They have biked countless miles preparing for each year’s rides and have even recently rode the entire Katy Trail as part of their conditioning. Both Ted and Karla are now retired from the United States Navy. Ted retired with the rank of Chief and Karla the rank of Senior Chief. Ted now drives a school bus for the Triad School District and Karla substitute teaches in the Triad, Edwardsville and Bethalto school districts. But their hearts are still with those serving in the military, especially those who have not made
it home or have come home from battle changed forever with different disabilities. Because of their continued commitment to supporting those still serving, it was an easy decision to make when they got the phone call from former Director of Team Navy Commander Tim Hanson who said, “Let’s do something different.” He then introduced the couple to the Ride 2 Recovery event. The mission statement for Ride 2 Recovery reads “To help make a difference in the lives of vets by assisting in their mental and physical rehabilitation programs.” The goals of the event are a) support the participation of wounded warriors and vets in the Ride 2 Recovery program; b) provide bikes, technical equipment, clinics, and outings for wounded warriors and vets; and c) improve health and morale of participants. All of these reasons were why the Schweitzers are proud and excited to participate in this year’s “Rocky Mountain Challenge.” There are a number of rides sponsored throughout the country at different times each year for Ride 2 Recovery. Their ride takes place July 31, 2010, through Aug. 5, 2010. The “Rocky Mountain Challenge” will begin at the Cheyenne Days Rodeo, in Cheyenne, Wyo. The participants will head south along the foothills of the rocky mountains, with a route that incorporates
some of the best cycling roads in the United States. Many areas in the route have been used in such famous races as Coors Classic, Red Zinger Classic, and the World Championships. The ride concludes with a visit to the Garden of the Gods before a grand finish at Fort Carson, Colo. This ride is different than the prior years events that the Schweitzers have participated in. Before they rode for their enjoyment, stopping at a number of sites along their ride, visiting with the members in the community, site-seeing a bit, and just enjoying the countryside. This ride, though surrounded in beautiful countryside, will be for the vets and the wounded warriors. The ride is limited to 200 participants – meaning those who are not an injured veteran, and each participant must raise at least $3,000 each. The goal in the fundraising is to fund the ride for the injured veterans, as they ride for free. This ride gives these vets a chance to do something that they may not be able to do in other circumstances. The sponsored participants will accompany the veterans on the ride to give encouragement, assist when needed and to be companions to the vets who need this event for a mental and physical boost. Along the route of the ride, the local American Legions come out and ride their motorcycles, escorting the riders and paving the way for a
safer ride. The support is amazing and the patriotic pride is apparent. When asked why they decided to ride this event, Ted’s reply was that he wanted to give back to another veteran. That is a big statement put into a short sentence. Although many people want to give back, Ted is definitely taking action. Karla’s reply was that she wanted to bring the attention back to the forefront so that more focus will be put on the soldiers needs. She knows this ride is going to be emotional, incredible and inspirational, but looks forward to the privilege. The couple is asking for the community’s help in raising the $6,000 goal amount they need for the privilege to ride in this event. If you feel that you would like to help them to reach this goal, you can make a donation in their behalf. There are two ways you can make that donation. Go online to www.ride2recovery.com, click on “sponsor a rider” and choose Ted or Karla Schweitzer. Or, you can mail the tax deductible check, made payable to Fitness Challenge Foundation, to Fitness Challenge Foundation, 23679 Calabasas Road, #420, Calabasas, Calif., 91302-please put “Schweitzer” in the memo section. Don't forget the staircase There are more possibilities than you think By LISA FLAM Associated Press You walk up them, you walk down them, perhaps countless t i m e s a d a y. W h e n y o u l o o k down, though, do you see any sign of your personal style? Staircases, once decorated with detailed, elaborate runners in the Victorian era, have been forgotten in many homes, or at least bumped down on the decorating to-do list. “Stairs are ignored. Period,” says Genevieve Gorder, host of HGTV’s “Dear Genevieve.” “People think of stairs and hallways as strictly utilitarian — a place to get somewhere else,” she sa y s . “ B u t t h e y a re s o m e of the most beautiful places to decorate.” First Impression Adding a runner to a staircase in the front of the house can help make a good first impression, especially because entryways often don’t have the space to feature fabric-covered furniture or windows. A runner can add color, texture and pattern to a space. And the carpeting can cut down on noise and provide a safer walking — or in the case of kids, running — surface. “People want a more finished feeling, but they forget the s t a i r w a y, ” s a y s C h r i s t o p h e r Lowell, host of Fine Living Network’s “Work That Room.” “An upholstered staircase can give them that feeling.” Simple vs. Traditional The traditional Oriental style is a runner mainstay, offering lots of colors around which to decorate. “They’re somewhat timeless and classic, and a lot of times they’re not going to tie you to a particular trend,” says Eileen Hunyadi, who owns The Stair Runner Store in Oxford, Conn., with her husband, John. “Traditional styles can be around for quite a long time and you can work other things in without being stuck in a time warp.” On the other hand, Lowell favors something simple and neutral, like a textured sisal wool runner. “The idea is to add texture and luxury to the space but not drown the space or lock in any overt patterns,” he says. H u n y a d i , w h o s e s t o re s e l l s mostly traditional styles, says more people have been asking for something nontraditional. Her store has started to carry

tonal looks, and runners with scrolls, trellises and fabric-type patterns — styles that made up about 30 percent of sales during the last few years. However, carpeting with more pattern will show less dirt and dust than a more solid carpet, she notes. Bye, Bye, Wall-to-Wall Since hardwood floors have made a comeback over the past few decades, many homeowners are shopping for runners because they’ve either ripped out wallto-wall stair carpeting or have moved into new homes with all hardwood floors. Homeowners also want runners to combat stairwell echoes, or for safety. “ We h a v e p e o p l e w h o h a v e fallen down the stairs, and we also have people who have dogs who have fallen down the stairs,” Hunyadi says. “A hardwood stair is certainly more slippery than something with carpet on it.” Making It Work Hunyadi advises coordinating a runner with the colors and style of the home’s main floor, not the upstairs. “The lower part of the house is really where you’re going to view the stair runner,” she says. Many homeowners try to match the runner to a color in the home, Hunyadi says, which can be tricky, so she points them to a complementary hue. As Gorder puts it: “It’s not about matching so much as creating a sense of flow. Pull colors that are in your home that you like, and connect them to the staircase.” The staircase is also a good p l a c e t o t r y s o m e t h i n g n e w. “It’s a great place to debut something, but make sure there a re c o n n e c t i v e q u a l i t i e s t h a t make it feel like it’s supposed to be there,” Gorder says. “This is an opportunity to play. You can introduce more color and be a little bit more bold.” Raw Materials Besides style, consider price. Runners are generally made of wool or a synthetic fiber. Hunyadi says her wool runners generally cost 25 percent to 30 percent more than synthetics, but there is some price overlap among higher quality synthetics and lower end wools. Wool is softer to the touch, she says, has more of a matte look and releases dirt more easily. Synthetics, which used to look a little shiny, still catch the light differently than wool, and hold onto dirt more. While wool carpeting can actually wear away from use, synthetics do not. “If you put the two side by side, you can tell the difference,”
says Hunyadi. “But when you take the other one away, many can’t.” Whichever material you choose, take care of it. “Take off your shoes, vacuum, vacuum, vacuum and have it professionally cleaned as
appropriate,” once every year or two, she says. Carpet Alternatives If you want to add style to your staircase without carpeting, Gorder suggests tiling the risers — the vertical part of the stairs that gets scuffed easily. Or try
making a paint “runner” in a bold shade of marine paint, or sanding one, creating the look with contrasting wood colors. “Painting a runner down the stairs in a pattern, stripe or polka dot is a really contemporary way to attack the stairs,” she said.

Home and Garden Anyone can grow their own birdseed By DEAN FOSDICK Associated Press If you’re looking for simple ways to cut household spending, start with the entertainment budget: Consider the cost of keeping those backyard bird feeders so busy. Black-oiled sunflower seed retails at more than $17.50 for a 10-pound bag, while nyjer, or thistle seed, goes for around $15 per 5-pound container. Those prices are for fresh, specialty seed — the premium grades marketed for the pickiest of passers-by. You always can search the sales, comparison shop or buy birdseed in bulk to save a buck. But consider growing your own for a substantial savings. Seed, nectar, and berry-rich plants and shrubs will draw wild birds year-round. Some flower varieties, such as sunflowers, cosmos and coneflowers, develop daisy-like seed heads, which turns them into organic bird feeders. Many plants have heads so large they’re easy to harvest or “thresh” once they finish flowering and drying. Lay them face down on a flat surface, pat or compress to free the seed, and then store it in jars or redistribute it into your feeders. It’s pretty straightforward, although the approach has its critics. “Birds are going to be much better at getting the seeds for many of the plant species. Therefore, it is best to leave
the plants standing over winter,” said Nigel Dunnett of the University of Sheffield, in England, and author of “Rain Gardens” (Timber Press, 2007). “Leaving the stems standing has other benefits, too. The cover prevents rain damage to exposed soil, and in climates where it doesn’t freeze up for months on end in the winter, (and) quite a lot of invertebrates will use the hollow stems of the perennials as a place for overwintering.” Packaged birdseed is big business. An estimated 4.6 billion pounds of wild bird feed is purchased in the United States each year at the retail level. That works out to some $1.45 billion in sales, said Susan Hays, executive director of the Wild Bird Feeding Industry at Sioux Falls, S.D. Yet backyard bird feeding isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be, many ornithologists say. “Birds are adaptable and mobile creatures, and most individuals can survive just fine without our handouts,” said David Bonter, leader of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Project FeederWatch. “If the food supply dwindles in one area, the birds will go elsewhere.” Feeding birds can be good for people, however. “Watching birds at our backyard feeders is one of the most meaningful interactions that many Americans have with wildlife in modern society,” Bonter said. Landscaping for birds also can enhance the environment,
particularly when paired with something like rain gardens, which are low places cultivated to divert storm runoff. “Because rain gardens are usually based on perennial plantings, then they can be good for seed-eating birds,” Dunnett said. Look to the Internet or reference books for local plants and shrubs attractive to wildlife. Meanwhile, here are some of the easiest varieties to grow and harvest and provide interest to your yard while nourishing foraging birds: • Sunflowers, which come in about 70 varieties. • Millet, particularly the ornamental varieties such as Purple Majesty and Purple Baron. • Corn. Plant a row or more of popcorn or Indian corn and leave it standing for the birds and other wildlife to glean. • Tickseed. More than 100 drought-tolerant species. • Common goldenrod. Careful, though. It tends to be aggressive. • Black-eyed Susan. An aster-like flower with attractive blooms and numerous seeds. • Purple coneflower. New hybrids come in a variety of colors, and birds flock to the seeds. • Cosmos. Great colors and easy-to-gather seeds. • Cup plant. Bright yellow blooms commonly found in flood plains and near streams. Some inexpensive alternatives to a birdseed diet include chopped or halved fruit, peanuts, suet or peanut butter smeared onto trees, and bread cubes.
Opulent antiques aren't just for antiques NEW YORK (AP) — It’s the Holy Grail of Tiffany lamps, a sublime stained-glass shade of lilies in soft hues of pink and green, cascading down in an oblong bell to a bronze base molded to resemble the delicate pads in the water. There’s only one left in the world for sale — the other seven variations are in museums or private collections — and it can be yours from the Macklowe Gallery in New York for a mere $3.5 million. The lamp was among the most opulent of antiques and antiquities on display at this year ’s Winter Antiques show. Regarded as the premiere antiques event in America, 75 dealers were at the annual bazaar, where New York socialites were the main clientele and museum curators perused works as large as 7 tons and as teeny as a dime. And priced accordingly. Of course, most of these items will be bought by museums or other public institutions with galleries. But if you

have the money, anything’s possible. Benjamin Macklowe, of the Macklowe Gallery, said they waited for the show to reveal the lamp, which would’ve cost $400 in 1906. (About a year ’s salary for a wellemployed person.) “My father has been chasing this lamp for 25 years,” he said. “He would hear whispers of its existence and just fly off to someplace searching for it. It was a dream come true when he found it.” And speaking of lilies, Adam Patrick of the New York gallery A La Vielle Russie Inc. showed off a diamond-encrusted lily pin so bright it hurt to stare. It was the size of an actual flower you’d fasten to a

groom’s lapel, and was made from at least 500 tiny, near-perfect gems. The cost? $110,000. The brooch was English, dating from around 1840, in the days before platinum when silver and gold were both used to create jewelry. “Such a delicate setting, and it’s so big, it must’ve been so involved to make,” Patrick said. Dealers wait decades for a booth at the show, which benefits the East Side Settlement. They view it as a prime chance to show off their best and most fabulous pieces. James Elkind of Lost City Arts brought his best find for his maiden trip to the show: an Art Deco eagle that was the model for those on the
Empire State Building. Created in glazed plaster, it’s in remarkable condition and was designed by Shreve Lam & Harmon Architects. It sold for $60,000. “I mean, that is what I got into the business for,” he said. “To rescue art, and to come with this to the show ... well, it was amazing.” But for size, a 7-ton, 9-foot-high, solid marble urn designed by Paul Manship, the sculptor who created Rockefeller Center’s “Prometheus,” was hard to beat. The urn was a private commission by a wealthy industrialist who installed it in his estate in a Cleveland suburb. It was made by Manship’s crew in the Bronx, and looks like it should
be from ancient Greece, except the images on the urn are those of Native Americans chasing bison. And it rotates on its pedestal. “Made in the South Bronx, you couldn’t have more American if you tried,” said Alice Duncan, director of Manhattan’s Gerald Peters Gallery, offering the urn for $6 million. A statue of Aphrodite, though, really was ancient: from the first century, in fact. The statue, being sold by Rupert Wace Ancient Art Limited of London, depicts the goddess of love standing on her right leg, left bent at the knee, with her drapery falling in elegant folds around her hips. Her arms and head are missing.

Television Golf can survive – even without Tiger NEW YORK (AP) — Television viewership will fall without Tiger Woods, but the networks that air the sport and the PGA Tour itself can handle the setback. That’s the word from several media analysts and the president of CBS Sports, which now is facing the possibility of covering the Masters Tournament just weeks from now with golf’s biggest star conspicuously absent. “We’re all looking forward to him coming back, but until then we’re doing perfectly fine,” said Sean McManus, president of CBS News and Sports. When Woods made his globally televised apology last Friday for serial infidelity, he said that “I do plan to return to golf one day, I just don’t know when that day will be.” The statement leaves Woods with no deadline — so what will happen to the audience if he stays away from the course? The first of four major tournaments on the PGA Tour, the Masters, which has long aired on CBS for the concluding rounds, ends April 11 this year. The U.S. Open follows in June on NBC. The British Open will be seen on ABC in July, and the PGA on CBS in August. Broadcast network coverage will be supplemented by coverage on cable networks. Tournaments in which Woods
isn’t playing generally suffer a drop in viewership and a loss of advertising revenue, notes Larry Novenstern, executive vice president of Optimedia. For the 15 or so tournaments where Woods might have been expected to play this year, Novenstern estimated the resulting advertising loss to networks would total between $10 million and $20 million. In comparison to other economic hardships challenging broadcasters right now, he says, “This is just a speed bump.” CBS’ McManus agrees. “Golf does better economically when Tiger is a major force on the PGA tour,” he says, “but golf is still a valuable product for us.” There’s no question Woods delivers a ratings kick for any tournament he plays in, ranging from 20 percent to as much as 50 percent. “But a certain percent of Tiger’s audience is not the traditional golf audience and, in effect, is not what many advertisers are looking for,” says Neal Pilson, president of Pilson Communications, a media consulting firm, and a former president of CBS Sports. “If Tiger’s in an event, you expect a 50 percent increase in ratings. You don’t necessarily negotiate a 50 percent increase in the advertising rate.” Many of the advertisers are so-

called “endemics” — brands like Callaway, Titleist and Nike that target products and messages specifically toward golf devotees. “There’s a strong, economically secure core audience for golf, and there is no indication that they have left,” Pilson says. “The more casual audience that follows Tiger probably

won’t be back until he comes back again.” The Nielsen Co. has estimated that an average of 4.6 million viewers tuned in to tournaments played by Tiger in 2007-08. When Woods had knee surgery after winning the 2008 U.S. Open and missed the rest of the season, ratings sunk as much as 50
