People Innsbrook hosting unique competition For The Edge In celebration of this season of love, the entry period for the Innsbrook Wedding Giveaway, presented with St. Louis’ Best Bridal, has officially opened. Couples can now take the photos and stories they’ve been saving and head over to www.InnsbrookWedding.com to begin their journey. Couples have until March 31, 2014 to enter to win the Innsbrook Wedding Giveaway – a total package worth more than $30,000. “Innsbrook is a truly unique place – we have multiple stunning ceremony and reception venues, on-site catering, overnight accommodations, and plenty of activities to keep your guests entertained,” said Katie Tucker, Innsbrook director of marketing and events. “We’re conveniently located just west of St. Louis, with easy access from the interstate, so you really have no reason not to enter this contest.” The entries will be narrowed down to 100 semi-finalist couples, who will be invited to attend an exclusive event at Innsbrook on May 4, where they’ll snack on hors d’oeuvres, meet with vendors, and network with other couples. That day, hundreds of brides- and grooms-to-be will turn hopeful eyes toward the podium, where 10 finalists will be drawn at random. Since a public vote will determine the winner, the next step in these couples’ journeys is to launch a campaign and start advocating. They’ll recruit family, friends, coworkers, and maybe even complete strangers to vote for them as they vie for the once-in-alifetime opportunity to win a dream wedding from Innsbrook. They should have plenty of motivation to raise support with the

People People planner “Hazzard” favorite to appear at car show The actor who made Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane an icon of the early 1980s is the featured celebrity at this year’s Greenville Graffiti Car Show. James Best, one of the co-stars of “The Dukes of Hazzard,” will sign autographs and serve as a celebrity judge of the classic cars and trucks on Saturday, June 14 in downtown Greenville. He will also present his one man show “Best of Hollywood” on Friday, June 13. Best’s career began in 1950 and he soon appeared alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest legends including James Stewart in “Winchester ’73” and Humphrey Bogart in “The Caine Mutiny.” Best was also featured in two of Universal Pictures biggest franchises---“Ma and Pa Kettle at the Fair” and “Francis Goes to West Point.” Fans of 1950s horror movies may remember James Best as the star of the 1959 cult classic “The Killer Shrews.” His television appearances included two episodes of “The Andy Griffith Show” and three episodes of “The Twilight Zone.” With over 180 acting credits to his name, Best’s most beloved character was Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane from 1979 to 1985 on “The Dukes of Hazzard.” Rosco, under the direction of Boss Hogg, spent each week chasing after the Duke boys. Car show organizers have received numerous requests to bring in a cast member from “The Dukes of Hazzard.” Best is expected to be a big draw to the event. In conjunction with his appearance at the Greenville Graffiti Car Show, Best’s one man show---“Best of Hollywood”---will be performed the night before at the Globe Theater, on the Greenville square. This 90 minute journey through Best’s career offers fans an intimate look behind the curtains, soundstages, and backlots of the studios and stars. Television and movie clips will be woven through humorous anecdotes, reminiscences, and Best’s imitation of friend and costar James Stewart. The Greenville Graffiti Car Show is Saturday, June 14 and will feature a variety of contests, food, and fun. The show is open to 1989 and older cars and trucks. Further details concerning the car show will be released soon. For more information, contact the Greenville Chamber of Commerce at (618) 664-9272.

Lincoln Museum to exhibit movie props An exhibit of sets, costumes and props from Steven Spielberg’s award-winning movie “Lincoln” opened recently at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, where it will be on display for years to come. Children can explore the exhibit free of charge when accompanied by an adult. The exhibit, “Lincoln: History to Hollywood,” includes the set for Lincoln’s office, part of Mary Lincoln’s bedroom set, costumes worn by the actors and a variety of props used in the movie. It’s being displayed at Union Station, just across the street from the presidential museum. The station will serve as an annex to the presidential museum where visitors
can tour the exhibit and see video presentations about the movie. “Steven Spielberg is a master story-teller, and ‘Lincoln’ is a classic. Movie buffs of all ages are going to come here to see this exhibit,” said Amy Martin, director of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. “And when they visit, they’re going to be caught up in the fascinating life of our greatest president.” “Lincoln” earned Academy Awards for Daniel Day-Lewis as Best Actor and Rick Carter for Best Production Design. “It is an honor to have this exhibit at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum,” Spielberg said when plans for the exhibit were announced. “When we visited for research on the film, it was our thought that there might be an opportunity to bring such an exhibit to Springfield, and that is now a reality.” The sets and costumes are on loan from DreamWorks Studios. This allows the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum to present the display at minimal cost to visitors. Children can tour the special exhibit at Union Station for free when accompanied by an adult. The cost for adults is just $5. Adults also have the option of buying the new “full experience” package allowing them to tour the entire presidential library and museum and the new movie exhibit for $15. That’s just $3 more than the basic museum admission price, which is not changing. Lincoln’s office is the key set in the movie. That’s where the president ponders how to pass a constitutional amendment abolishing slavery and pushes his aides to get the job done. The exhibit also includes a vignette of Mary Lincoln’s bedroom, the setting for emotional confrontations between husband and wife. Visitors can see Oscar-nominated costumes for Lincoln, his wife and his son Tad. Props include

The Arts EAC to present "Art of Africa" exhibit By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge
A
bout four years ago, the University Museum at SIUE, under the direction of Dr. Eric Barnett, partnered with the Edwardsville Arts Center to allow the EAC to showcase items from the University Museum collection in a special EAC exhibit. The first exhibit was such a success that the collaboration has become an annual exhibit. Past exhibits curated by Barnett have included University Museum Pre-Columbian Mayan art and artifacts as well as items from the country of Asia. This year, the retiring Barnett has turned over the curating reigns to SIUE graduate assistants Carrie Smith and Noelle Norris as they present “Art of Africa” from March 7 to April 11 in the EAC main gallery. Smith explained that the idea behind the “Art of Africa” exhibit, which will feature approximately 100 pieces of beautifully crafted art and artifacts from the African continent, was developed a year ago before the Pre-Columbian Mayan show ended. “It’s been over a year in the making,” Smith said. “The idea is to show the traditional African art and then to show the westernized versions of it. So basically what they would have and it’s function and use versus what’s made for tourists.” Smith offered as an example an authentic African stool that was very earthy and plain in structure. “They would have used these,” she said pointing to the authentic stool. “And they would have sold these to us,” she said pointing to a westernized, decorative version of an African stool that can likely be found in many American homes. She noted that distinguishing between the authentic pieces and the westernized items isn’t always

how it would have looked.” Art pieces that will be on display in the exhibit will include stools, headdresses, statues, votives, masks and figurative pieces. Pointing to several small, unadorned golden figurines and then the westernized version of painted and highly adorned figurines, Smith noted that the authentic figurines were used as a trading commodity versus the westernized figurines that

tourists buy as trinkets. “We’ll take pieces like this and we’ll show the original setting, maybe show some photographs of how it would be used,” Smith said. Also, for the first time in a University Museum exhibit, there will be an interactive component to the show. “We have some musical instruments and games picked out where we have our good authentic example and then our
tourist example, and we’re going to let people play with the tourists’ examples,” Norris said. Smith and Norris also planned to have interactive teaching displays to help visitors, especially children, understand the difference between the traditional and western versions. “They are going to get to try to decide whether its traditional or western and then they can lift the panel and see if they guessed it correctly,” Smith added. “We’re trying to make it a little more interactive for the kids.” While many of the items in the exhibit may look hundreds of years old, Smith emphasized that the exhibit isn’t as much about the age of the items as it is about the culture because many of the items are still used today. “We have this one,” she said holding a Kuba mask. “It’s from the 30’s maybe – they would still wear this. So this would still be in practical use for them if they had this today – so it’s not as much about how old it is but the authenticity.” EAC Executive Director Pat Quinn was looking forward to the exhibit that would contain items that otherwise are mostly kept in storage at the University Museum. “I’m always excited to see what the University Museum staff will bring for the EAC for the exhibit,” Quinn said. “It’s an honor to have the artifacts and the partnership with SIUE.” An opening reception for “Art of Africa” takes place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on March 7 to officially begin the exhibit. Additionally, art work by Liberty Middle School students will be featured in the EAC’s Dennis DeToye Student Gallery. The EAC, located at 6165 Goshen Rd. in Edwardsville, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Fridays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.

Cedarhurst welcomes new exhibit Modern Dialect: American Paintings from the John and Susan Horseman Collection will be featured For The Edge
M
odern Dialect: American Paintings from the John and Susan Horseman Collection will be the featured Main Gallery exhibition now through May 11 at Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in Mt. Vernon. The exhibit, organized by the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Memphis, Tenn., is an exhibition of American Modernist paintings from the 1920s to the beginning of World War II, a period marked by significant change and compounded by the onset of the Great Depression in the 1930s. The exhibit, cosponsored by Peoples National Bank and WSIU Public Radio/WSIU Public Television, features more than 60 major American Scene paintings which illustrate the changes the nation underwent through the eyes of artists who were often poor and out of work. Influenced by radical art movements taking hold in Europe at the time, the featured artists painted images ranging from urban laborers to Cubist-inspired abstractions and from fragmented rural landscapes to modern industrial cities and the people that inhabited them. Admission to the Main Gallery exhibit is $5 per person. Admission is free Tuesday through Sunday for members of Cedarhurst and children 10 and under. Each Thursday, throughout the exhibit, admission is free for all visitors. Art Rocks, an exhibit of ArtTime
after-school work will be the featured exhibition in the Beck Family Center Gallery. Students in the November 2013 after school art program created a variety of paintings, drawings and mixed media artwork inspired by music for this exhibition. An enthusiastic response to the annual Shrode Fine Art & Craft Competition at Cedarhurst garnered entries from many talented artists in the southern Illinois region. The exhibit, sponsored by Fairfield Inn and Suites and Doug & Debby Kroeschen opened to the public on Sunday, February 23 in the Regenhardt Gallery of the Shrode Art Center at Cedarhurst. The juried competition was open to all
artists 18 years of age and older living in southern Illinois, south of Interstate 70. The competition cash award recipients will be announced at the preview opening reception on February 22. Located on Richview Road in Mt. Vernon, Cedarhurst Center for the Arts is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. For more information about Cedarhurst call 618.242.1236 or visit www.cedarhurst.org . An activity of the John R. and Eleanor R. Mitchell Foundation. Programs are partially supported by grants from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency and the Schweinfurth Foundation.

Religion Religion briefs Nun gets nearly 3 years in prison for nuke protest NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — An 84-year-old nun has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison for breaking into and defacing a storage bunker holding bomb-grade uranium in a peace protest at a Tennessee weapons plant. Sister Megan Rice was sentenced Tuesday along with two men who were each sentenced to more than five years in prison. The three activists cut through three fences on July 28, 2012, and reached a storage bunker that holds the nation's primary supply of bomb-grade uranium. They painted messages, hung banners and threw blood on the bunker wall. While officials claimed there was never any danger of the protesters reaching materials that could be detonated or used to assemble a dirty bomb, the break-in raised serious questions about security.
Pastor who died of rattlesnake bite remembered MIDDLESBORO, Ky. (AP) — A snake-handling pastor in Kentucky who died after being bitten by one of the serpents during a church service has been remembered fondly at a memorial service.
Jamie Coots was known for his role on the National Geographic television reality show "Snake Salvation." But a family friend remembered him Tuesday night for his "great faith" and tolerance of others. Bill Bisceglia (bih-SHEG'-lee-ah) of Middlesboro told Knoxville, Tenn., station WBIR-TV that the 42-year-old Coots didn't argue with people who didn't agree with him, but maintained his own beliefs until he died. People parked blocks away from the funeral home where visitation and a funeral service were held. Visitors said afterward the funeral home was full and lines were long. Coots was handling a rattlesnake when he was bitten Saturday night.
Judges hear arguments on Evansville cross display CHICAGO (AP) — The attorney for an Indiana church says its free speech rights were violated when a federal judge blocked the city of Evansville from allowing 31 crosses decorated by vacation Bible school students to be erected along the city's public riverfront. Evansville officials had approved the display requested by Westside Christian Church, but two local residents filed suit, arguing that the 6-foot-tall crosses along four blocks of city property would appear to endorse religion. Judge Sarah Evans Barker agreed and prohibited the display.
On Tuesday, the church's attorney, Bryan Beauman (BOH'mun), urged the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn that ruling. But Gavin Rose, an attorney for the ACLU of Indiana, said the church had no right to appeal since the ruling was against the city, and the city didn't appeal. One of the appellate judges suggested that seemed an odd position to take for an organization that defends the First Amendment.
Iowa State removing Bibles from hotel guest rooms DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Bibles will be removed from guest rooms at Iowa State University's Hotel Memorial Union in Ames. The Des Moines Register says a guest complained to a watchdog group, the Freedom From Religion Foundation. The organization wrote to Memorial Union director Richard Reynolds on Jan. 29, asking for the Bibles to be removed. The group's attorney, Patrick Elliott, said that for a state-run university to provide a Bible to guests, "that policy facilitates illegal endorsement of Christianity over other religions and over nonreligion." Reynolds responded last week and said the Bibles would be removed by March 1.

"The Lego Movie"
Young and old fans alike know the joy of dumping a set of Legos on the floor and chucking that instruction manual. After all, throwing a portion of a helicopter on an incomplete racecar could produce the ultimate hybrid. In “The Lego Movie,” the toy brand’s first theatrical feature (there have been previous straight-to-DVD movies and also video games), audiences are encouraged to wave off routine. Lego doesn’t need a 3-D animated flick with a $60 million budget to drive sales, but it should expect a spike after this uproarious yet touching tale hits theaters. When average construction worker Emmet (voiced by an endearing Chris Pratt) accidentally falls into a pit at his worksite, he is met by Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks), a sassy, Goth chick channeling Trinity in this “Matrix” for kids. Wyldstyle believes Emmet is a “Special” master builder who can save Bricksburg from the evil President Business (played with charming bite by Will Farrell), who wants to douse the town with a Krazy Glue-like substance called kragle. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for “mild action and rude humor.” RUNNING TIME: 100 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.
"The Monuments Men"
George Clooney, movie director, started out with so much promise. He began with two stories about television’s power, both to distort reality (“Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” about “Gong Show” host Chuck Barris) and to reveal it (”Good Night, and Good Luck,” about Edward R. Murrow). Neither was perfect, but the films showed tremendous potential, particularly the latter, with its thick clouds of paranoia and cigarette smoke. But Clooney has gone somewhat astray, with the football comedy “Leatherheads,” the political thriller “The Ides of March” and now “The Monuments Men.” They’re not bad pictures, but nostalgia — made urgent in “Good Night” — suffocates the World War II caper “The Monuments Men” like it did the screwball ode “Leatherheads.” Clooney’s taste is very good, and in adapting Robert M. Edsel and Bret Witter’s book by the same title about the Allied forces’ pursuit of art masterpieces stolen by Nazis, he has chosen a fascinating historical tale that also bears the intriguing question: What’s the price we’re willing to pay for art? But while a Michelangelo may be worth dying for, “The Monuments Men” is, at best, adequately priced as a movie ticket. Clooney, working from a script he penned with his frequent collaborator Grant Heslov, has fashioned his film as a traditional WWII flick, with a “Great Escape”-like score by Alexandre Desplat and a sentimental kind of soldierly chumminess. Only this band of brothers is more like an assembly of academics. A handful of museum curators and art experts have been gathered by art historian Frank Stokes (Clooney) to investigate and retake the troves of artwork the Nazis have stolen for a mammoth German museum planned by Hitler. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America

"RoboCop"
The original 1987 “RoboCop,” Dutch director Paul Verhoeven’s first Hollywood film, isn’t so much a movie to revere as a bit of brutalism to behold. It had a grim comic vibe, satirizing the savagery of both corporate bloodthirstiness and justice-seeking rampages. Peter Weller’s RoboCop was a techno-Frankenstein created to tame Detroit’s rampant crime: Dirty Harry for dystopia. Remaking “RoboCop” is like trying to recreate a nightmare. That’s one reason why plans to remake the film were meant with mostly dubious derision: Hollywood, particularly nowadays, isn’t in the business of nihilism. Post-apocalyptic films may be all the rage, but a movie about a cop’s dead body shoved into a robot is a tad darker than Jennifer Lawrence running through the woods. Directed by Jose Padilha (the Brazilian filmmaker who made the excellent documentary “Bus 174” before shifting into action with “Elite Squad”), this “RoboCop” has updated the dystopia with some clever ideas and better acting, while at the same time sanitizing any satire with video-game polish and sequel baiting. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “intense sequences of action including frenetic gun violence throughout, brief strong language, sensuality and some drug material.” RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
"In Secret"
There have been many stage and screen adaptations of “Therese Raquin,” Emile Zola’s 1867 novel about love and betrayal. Perhaps most notable was filmmaker Marcel Carne’s 1953 version, “The Adultress,” starring Simone Signoret and Raf Vallone. It was a classic slice of film noir; a feverish take on a sordid love affair. “In Secret” is the latest rendering of Zola’s bleak story. Elizabeth Olsen, Oscar Isaacs, Tom Felton and Jessica Lange offer compelling performances in a provocative remake that’s stirring until its withered end. Set in 1860s France, Therese (played seductively by Olsen) is sent to live with her aunt, Madame Raquin (Lange), an entitled and needy dame who forces her niece to marry her sickly son, Camille (played delicately and artfully by Felton). When Camille gets a job as a clerk in Paris, the three move from the country to the bustling city, where Madame Raquin opens a fabric shop. Resigned to an uninspired life working in her aunt’s store, Therese, who’s become increasingly lascivious, is even welcoming the idea of sex with her effeminate cousin to satisfy her desires. RATEDL R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “sexual content and brief violent images.” RUNNING TIME: 107 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

“Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me”
For a documentary subject as forceful as Elaine Stritch, filmmakers may need to turn to nature — a typhoon might do it — to find anything approximate. Even the camera must warily keep its distance in “Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me.” She warns its operator when he gets too close: “I don’t know whether this is a skin commercial, or what.” Stritch captivates just walking down the street: greeting fans, chastising cabs, swaying to the music of the sidewalk. “I wish I could f---ing drive,” she says at the opening of the documentary. “Then I’d really be a menace.” The strong types usually seen in movies— caped men with powers, action heroes with six-packs — have nothing on this long-legged, 89-year-old New York broad. Stritch, who has long eschewed pants of any sort, has the kind of ferocious voice that old age can’t quiet. Chiemi Karasawa’s “Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me” is an irresistibly entertaining documentary that captures Stritch during what she unsentimentally calls “almost posttime.” After seven decades performing in New York — on Broadway, in countless cabaret nights at the Cafe Carlyle — Stritch’s enormous energy has been knocked by the increasing years, diabetes, and surgeries on her hip and eyes. RATEDL not rated by the Motion Picture Association of America. Contains expletives. RUNNING TIME: 82 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.
“Stalingrad”
Big screen. Big effects. Big budget. Big box office. It’s clear that Russian director Fedor Bondarchuk was going for something, well, big, with “Stalingrad,” the first-ever Russian film in IMAX 3D. And in a sense, that’s perfectly apt, because it would be hard to overstate how large the Battle of Stalingrad looms in the Russian psyche. The crucial Soviet victory over the Nazis in the battle, which lasted six months and was one of the bloodiest in modern warfare, was a key turning point of World War II — or what the Russians call the Great Patriotic War. And the rewards for Bondarchuk have been, yes, big, so far. “Stalingrad,” with a reported $30 million budget, is a giant hit in Russia — the studio calls it the highest-grossing Russian movie of all time — and also has done huge box office in China. Now, it’s coming to IMAX 3D screens in the United States for a week, during which the filmmakers hope to spark further interest. The only problem is that the film, while certainly impressive in its effects and a few rock-’em sock-’em battle scenes, is sorely lacking in crucial areas, namely characterization and narrative. Perhaps it wouldn’t matter, if the film didn’t attempt to be not only a blockbuster but a heart-tugging, intimate story about bravery, endurance, sacrifice and love. To accomplish that, you need a compelling script and complex characters. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “sequences of war violence.” RUNNING TIME: 135 minutes.

"In Secret" a taxing tale By JESSICA HERNDON Associated Press There have been many stage and screen adaptations of “Therese Raquin,” Emile Zola’s 1867 novel about love and betrayal. Set in 1860s France, Therese (played seductively by Olsen) is sent to live with her aunt, Madame Raquin (Lange), an entitled and needy dame who forces her niece to marry her sickly son, Camille (played
delicately and artfully by Felton). When she meets Laurent (Issacs), Camille’s childhood friend, the two begin an erotic affair. Olsen and Isaacs are extremely effective together and their lust-ridden scenes — and there are plenty — only intensify. As Therese and Laurent continue to sneak around, their devotion deepens. Uninhibited and raw, Isaacs is at his sexiest. In his first lead role since starring in the Coen brothers’ Oscar-nominated “Inside Llewyn Davis,” he offers another authentic performance and we see his talents swell
in many directions. As Llewyn, Isaacs had one consistent tone: gloomy. Here, he easily shifts from charming and arousing to dark and devious while seducing Therese and leading her down a murderous path. To be together freely, Laurent devises a plan to kill Camille and make it look like an accident. Therese agrees to be an accomplice and the deed is done. With her cousin dead, Therese is faced with increasing guilt and begins to lash out, including a tirade against Laurent on their wedding night. The couple then begins to unravel — emotionally and physically. It’s here that Madame Raquin starts to gain heavy sympathy. Lange plays a grieving mother, going from agonized to helpless, so poignantly that your heart breaks for her. At this point, the story becomes utterly unrelenting. Shirley Henderson, as Suzanne, a part of Madame Raquin’s social
bunch, serves as the only steady comic relief. She is a constant snoop who is easily flustered, especially when the conversation turns to detailing the atmosphere inside a morgue. This being his first feature film following directing for theater and television, writer and director Charlie Stratton successfully paints a forlorn picture with his fluid use of muted color, from the dismal wardrobe to the set design to the lighting. The look grows effectively drearier as the despair of the couple’s torment sets in. However, we do benefit from a few contrasting scenes, like the inclusion of landscapes (shot in Hungary and Serbia) and moments of intense lovemaking between Therese and Laurent, which appear warm and intimate due to extreme closeups and amber hues offering the illusion of candlelight.
"Dallas Buyers Club" hits the mark By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge As it turns out, I may have saved the best for last. I waited a little toward the last minute to see "Dallas Buyers Club" before Sunday's Oscar ceremony, but I was rewarded by a great film featuring some amazing transformations by its primary actors, Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto. The story is specific and very important to modern history. It tackles the AIDS crisis of the 1980s with the same non-sanitized way that "12 Years a Slave" addresses slavery. I'm here to tell you that this might be the best of the nine Best Picture nominees. I hope you get the chance to see it soon. Ron Woodroof (McConaughey) is a hustler, always out lookin' for a buck. He's also a rodeo man and an
electrician for the oil companies down in Dallas. More than anything, Ron fancies himself a ladies' man. He's constantly on the prowl for a good time. If that means two partners at once, he's game. If it means anonymous sex in public places, he's not shy. Hedonism is a way of life for Ron Woodroof. Between the cocaine, Budweiser, and the endless parade of women, he's pretty much the King of Texas. Until he gets sick. Ron's just a little slip of a thing and a violent cough and some piercing migraines really knock him flat on his face. After a workplace mishap, he's taken to the hospital for treatment where a no-nonsense doctor, Sevard (Denis O'Hare), gives him the bad news that he is HIVpositive, a diagnosis that the ragingly homophobic Woodroof takes very
badly. In Ron's world of 1985, HIV was still almost completely known as a disease affecting only the gay male population. And nobody's going to question Ron Woodroof's sexuality. The sullen doctor gives him thirty days to live. On a bender and devoid of all his macho friends, Ron starts to contemplate what it means to have only a month left. He loves his life. Why would he want to go out so soon? So he takes to the libraries and begins to research his condition, finally learning that he would have contracted his disease from one of the anonymous one-night stands in his sordid past. He also reads a lot about the current treatments and the new wonder drug, AZT. AZT killed a lot of AIDS patients long before it successfully extended the
lives of millions more and that fact is carefully examined throughout the picture. Ineligible for the current round of clinical trials, and dead set on treatment of some sort, Ron heads to Mexico where he meets the hippie-ish Dr. Vass (Griffin Dunne) who charters his course with foreign drugs, vitamins, and a series of nontoxic protein supplements, most of which are not approved by the FDA for treatment of AIDS, the condition Ron has progressed unto. Based on his success with Dr. Vass, Ron begins to smuggle drugs back into Dallas from around the world and forms the Dallas Buyers Club, a membership service that allows you all the drugs you need for just one upfront fee. This, of course, draws the ire of the IRS and the FDA, in the guise of Richard Barkley, a man

bent on destroying Woodroof's club. Instead, Ron uses the strength of the sick population to give 'em Hell. His business partner, Rayon (Leto), is a pre-op transsexual man who has access to the world where most of the patients would live. Ron also develops a strong relationship with his own doctor, Eve Saks (Jennifer Garner), who goes to great lengths to be supportive. I was blown away not just by the quality of this movie, but especially by the roles inhabited by Leto and McConaughey. Each went through an epic change to nail it down and the work shows. This is one for the ages. "Dallas Buyers Club" runs 130 minutes and is rated R for pervasive language, some strong sexual content, nudity, and drug use. I give this film four stars out of four.

from boy band harmonies, to neosoul to rap-rock fusion. Signed to Atlantic by Ahmet Ertegan in the 1970’s, Daryl Hall & John Oates have sold more albums than any other duo in music history. Their 1973 debut album, Abandoned Luncheonette, produced by Arif Mardin, yielded the Top 10 single, “She’s Gone,” which also went to #1 on the R&B charts when it was covered by Taveras. The duo recorded one more album with Atlantic, War Babies, (produced by Todd Rundgren) before they left and promptly signed to RCA. Their tenure at RCA would catapult the duo to international superstardom.
disciples of earlier soul greats, Daryl Hall & John Oates are soul survivors in their own right. They have become such musical influences on some of today’s popular artists that the September 2006 cover of Spin Magazine’s headline read: “Why Hall and Oates are the New Velvet Underground.” Their artistic fan base includes Rob Thomas, John Mayer, Brandon Flowers of the Killers, Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie and MTV’s newest hipsters Gym Class Heroes who dubbed their tour “Daryl Hall for President Tour 2007.” One of the most sampled artists today, their impact can be heard everywhere
