Red'z Rib Shack will now call 1501 Troy Road in Edwardsville home.
It's true – Red'z Rib Shack is back Original owners return with original menu By BILL TUCKER Of The Edge Red’z Rib Shack is back. Randy and Shiona Quick have returned from the Caribbean and have every intention of reclaiming their spot at the top of the metro-east barbecue pyramid. They’ll do so from a different location as they are transforming the former Rally’s on Troy Road into a drive-through barbecue restaurant. For a 10-year period that encompassed most of the ‘90s, Red’z was known throughout the region for its dinners, served in Maryville at the intersection of Routes 159 and 162. The Quicks sold out and moved to the Caribbean, but came back as Randy’s mother was in need of a caregiver. “We’re ecstatic to be back,” Randy said. A target date of April 15 has been set for the opening and former patrons will be pleased with the menu. “We’re offering the exact same products the original Red’z offered,” Randy said. That means ribs, pork steaks, chicken pieces, shredded chicken and shredded pork. The side items will also return – potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans and applesauce. Sourdough bread and kaiser rolls are also served with each meal.
March 11, 2010
Randy said two new items will be added to the menu – barbaritos, which feature shredded chicken or pork wrapped in a tortilla, and crunch baskets, shredded chicken or pork served over corn chips. Red’z will operate as a double drive-through and offer catering for special events. Daily lunch specials will be offered in the $5 range. During its heyday, Red’z grew to the point where it opened a second location on the Anastasia steamboat in Alton. Randy said while he and his wife loved the Caribbean, they are truly glad to be home. “We are so extremely excited to be back and I can do what I love, which is make my customers happy with a quality product day in and day out,” Randy said. “We plan to make ourselves known again very fast.” That wasn’t a problem for the original Red’z Rib Shack, which Randy proudly notes was the only restaurant in Madison County to earn a score of 100 on each and every one of its Health Department inspections. And while cleanliness and service are two hallmarks of the restaurant, Randy knows why people came and ate the first time. “Our meals are real, no grease whatsoever,” he said.

People People planner Dinosaurs to invade Botanical Garden The Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis is marking the golden anniversary of one of its most popular attractions, the Climatron®, by transporting visitors back in time to the golden age of dinosaurs. Feel the thrill of encountering a hulking Placerias, bird-like Bambiraptor or soaring Sordes in an unparalleled environment: hidden in the heart of a thriving tropical rain forest. Witness dozens of these realistic, pre-historic creatures when “DinoQuest: A Tropical Trek Through Time” debuts at the Missouri Botanical Garden in 2010 on May 1. Since 1960, the Climatron has easily been one of the most recognizable features at the Garden, noted as the first geodesic dome to be used as a plant conservatory. Inside, lush green foliage, cascading waterfalls and a warm, humid climate simulate an authentic jungle atmosphere. “This exhibition provides a perfect introduction to the history of life on earth, extinction, and survival. How we manage our resources will have a major effect on the future of life, and there are many lessons to be learned from the past,” said Dr. Peter Raven, president of the Missouri Botanical Garden. “In addition to the educational value, there is also a real sense of excitement in experiencing these lifelike creatures in such an awe-inspiring setting. We hope it will evoke wonder, imagination and intrigue in visitors of all ages.” On the “trek through time,” visitors of all ages will experience life in a tropical forest long ago, today and tomorrow. A smooth pathway winds through the 24,000-squarefoot Climatron conservatory, where more than a dozen installations depict dinosaurs and reptiles from the Cretaceous, Jurassic, Triassic and Permian periods “frozen in time” amid the living flora. Encounter hungry herbivores, including a pair of toothy Heterodontosaurus and an eight-foot-long,bulky-bodied Placerias. Spot a flock of bird-like Bambiraptors hovering beneath green cycads, keeping watch over nests brimming with eggs. Identify a large Dimetrodon by the finned “sail” along its spine, or the threefoot-long Rhamphorynchus by its fur-covered wings. Postosuchus, a pre-dinosaur age predator of Placerias, hides atop a cliff near a bamboo grove, while a hungry Syntarsus lurks beneath a large tree. See the Compsognathus tend to their nests near the basin of a waterfall as a trio of vigilant Oviraptors keep watch over their nests of offspring near a shallow pool. Look up to find three hairy Sordes, ready to take flight from their perches in the trees. Two Quetzalcoatlus babies, also flying reptiles, huddle in their nest above

a tank of fish, while their 30-footlong parent flies high inside the neighboring Shoenberg Temperate House, a conservatory adjacent to the Climatron. Outside on Garden grounds, a 30-foot-long, duck-billed Parasaurolophus nurtures its three young. A 32-foot-tall Tyrannosaurus rex can scarcely go unnoticed as it towers above the surrounding flora. On public display for the first time, a 30-foot-long pregnant Hypsibema, the Missouri state dinosaur, watches over its nest and greets visitors near the entrance to the Doris I. Schnuck Children’s Garden. The realistic DinoQuest dinosaurs and reptiles are a labor of love for creator Guy Darrough of Lost World Studios in Arnold, Mo. Darrough has been devoted to building life-sized

models of these extinct creatures for nearly 15 years. “My ultimate goal is to create an experience that is realistic enough to draw visitors into the arena of science and learning,” said Darrough. “The aesthetic appeal of these dinosaurs coupled with the surrounding vegetation is just incredible.” The dinosaur discovery continues as visitors exit the Climatron into the Brookings Interpretive Center. There, visitors will be amazed to view a one-and-one-half-ton slab of sandstone containing over 200 bones

from dinosaurs, turtles, fish and birds. Darrough obtained the slab from an excavation in Lance Creek, Wyo. and estimates the sandstone piece is over 65 million years old. Children can hone their own paleontology skills by unearthing faux bones at a mini-dino dig site, climb and play in a dinosaur nest, envision themselves in the days of dinosaurs through green screen technology, and get an up-close look at the Dino Egg Incubator, an original prop from the set of the movie “Jurassic Park III.” Families can explore life in tropical forests
today, discovering geckos and poison dart frogs, exploring the connections between animals and plants, and experiencing the many multi-sensory gifts that these biorich ecosystems give us. Visitors will also learn about tropical forests today and how Garden researchers are working feverishly to document, protect and preserve these at-risk ecosystems for generations to come. The 79-acre Missouri Botanical Garden is located at 4344 Shaw Blvd. in south St. Louis, accessible from Interstate 44 at the Vandeventer exit.

Discipleship through music Casting Crowns to visit the Family Arena By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Contemporary Christian music may not be on the iPod of many music lovers, but the group Casting Crowns is clearing a path for a whole new audience. In an unprecedented six-year span with nearly 4.5 million in career album sales, a Grammy Award, an American Music Award, 23 Dove Awards and eight chart-topping radio singles, Casting Crowns remains focused on discipleship through music. With lead singer and songwriter Mark Hall’s 18 years in youth ministry, the band’s message remains rooted in the student services he has led on a weekly basis since 2001, at Eagles Landing Baptist church near Atlanta. The songs start as messages for his 400 teenagers and their families. With boldly honest, hardhitting lyrics, the band continues to challenge, strengthen and pour into the body of Christ, giving listeners a fresh, relevant perspective on loving God and loving people. Living life with a kingdom focus, a reaching-out, loving-the-worldlike-Jesus-does purpose – that’s the focus of the band’s fourth studio album titled “Until The Whole World Hears.” Millions of fans won’t be disappointed as these seven gifted musicians continue to speak truth into today’s culture through this new 12-song collection. Hall says, “Our main purpose, above all else, is to know Him m o re . ” I t ’ s t h a t u n w a v e r i n g desire and the intent of a personal friendship with Jesus that drives Casting Crowns and shapes its latest offering of message-centered songs into powerful tools for discipleship. The title track on the album comes from a signature line in an e-mail from Roger Glidewell, Mark’s mentor in student ministry. Glidewell always closed his e-mails with the phrase, “Until the whole world hears.” Hall says, “Those simple words are a challenge to be intentional with the way we live our lives.” The lyrics were born out of John the Baptist’s life. “He was the voice crying out in the wilderness, eating grasshoppers, and speaking into the world about their sin. Speaking out in the wilderness is never popular but in the body of Christ, we’ve got to do it in love.” With a captivating rock style, “Until the Whole World Hears”

Casting Crowns also includes the voices of the congregation from Eagles Landing First Baptist Church, Hall’s home church. “To Know You” encapsulates the Apostle Paul’s struggles and fears, and brings them down to a personal level for every believer. Steeped in Scripture, every line of the song is a declaration of total surrender. Hall explains, “In Romans 8:29, we’re told that God is conforming us into the image of His Son. His goal for my life is to make me like Jesus. To bring Him glory. Everything else is rubbish, Paul says, compared to knowing Him. And if my life goal is really to know Him and to honor Him, is He going to steer me off a cliff? No. Is this easy to say and hard to do? Yeah. But that doesn’t make it not true.” The members of Casting Crowns each serve in student ministry in their local churches. “Our songs have always come from our ministry in the church,” Hall says. “They start as messages on Wednesday night, things we’re teaching our teenagers and their families. Our typical
Wednesday night crowd is about 70 percent students and 30 percent parents. So we’re a family ministry and that comes out in the crowds who come to our concerts. You’ll see a 6-year-old and a 60-year-old at a Crowns concert.” Concert-goers love hearing the stories behind their favorite songs. And Hall loves to tell the stories and give God all the credit. He explains how “If We’ve Ever Needed You” came to be: “I’d been trying to write all day, but I felt like I was tying words in knots. I went to bed, couldn’t sleep, was up and down, until about 2:30 in the morning. My wife, Melanie, sat up in the bed and said, ‘You just need to say, Speak, Lord, for your servant hears!’ And then she rolled over and went back to sleep!” Hall laughs when he recalls, “I was a little ill about that comment but I knew she was right, so I went downstairs to the piano. That’s when I realized I’d been humming a tune in my head for hours. So I pounded out the chords and the first verse just poured out. That’s
when you know it’s bigger than you; when you know you didn’t come up with the lyric. I’m not that creative! When God whispers in my ear — that’s a ‘God line.’” The result is a captivating song of crying out to God in desperation, both personally and corporately as the body of Christ. “Always Enough” also has God’s fingerprints all over it. Hall remembers, “Several months ago, we lost a soldier in Afghanistan who was part of our church. His son is in our middle school ministry, and it really rocked us. You know it’s going on, but then it happens close to you, and it opens your eyes to the reality. Casting Crowns was on the road and couldn’t be home for the funeral. The song really came together that day. When life is hard and tragedy comes, you discover how real Jesus is to you. Your friends and your church try to help, but at that moment, Jesus can’t be Plan B. He’s got to be it; He’s got to be enough. When things that are constants in our lives are stripped away, that’s when we have to know
He’s ‘Always Enough.’” “Until The Whole World Hears” showcases the signature sound of Casting Crowns and its members: Mark Hall, Megan Garrett, Melodee DeVevo, Hector Cervantes, Chris Huffman, Juan DeVevo, and new member Brian Scoggin. Brian makes his debut with Casting Crowns on this album. A veteran musician and middle school pastor at a church near Atlanta, Scoggin is now the drummer for the band. Hall notes that former Crowns’ drummer Andy Williams, the “Bald Wonder,” is serving in ministry with his wife and doing well. For the first time on a Crowns’ album, Juan DeVevo and Hector Cervantes add their vocals to Hall’s on the haunting worship song “At Your Feet.” This song provides an opportunity for listeners to respond to the gospel by laying their past, their present, and their future at Jesus’ feet. In an effort to connect others to the powerful theology of hymns, the album includes modern reinventions of songs Hall grew up with, including “Glorious Day (Living He Loved Me)” (from the hymn “One Day”), “Joyful, Joyful” and “Blessed Redeemer” − which features violinist Melodee DeVevo as lead vocalist and again includes the congregation from Eagles Landing. After all the accolades, all the awards, all the time on the road and in the studio, why does Casting Crowns continue to do what they do? The answer is simple: It’s their calling – God’s calling on the lives of these seven committed and talented musicians. To pour their lives into the students and families God has placed in their paths. To set discipleship to music. To challenge and strengthen the body of Christ. It’s what brought them together in the first place and what keeps them going, “Until The Whole World Hears.” Tickets are now on sale at the Family Arena Box Office, or through MetroTix.com. Tickets are $80 for Gold Circle, $47 for mid-floor, $29 for rear floor, 100 level end, and 200 level sides, and $20 for 200 level end. Suites are also available. The Family Arena is conveniently located 1 1/2 miles south of I-70 and Fifth Street in St. Charles on Arena Parkway; located one mile north of the Page Extension. We are changing people’s perception of what a stringed instrument can do.” From the traditional fiddle and violin to the exotic Chinese erhu, BOWFIRE is simply musical virtuosity in the hands of masters. Since forming in 2000, BOWFIRE has performed hundreds of live show dates, recorded two CDs, and has been featured as a TV special, “BOWFIRE Live,” on PBS stations in the United States and on a Cineplex Big Screen in Canada. Directed by Broadway’s Stafford Arima (“Ragtime” and “Altar Boyz”), BOWFIRE is a fully staged theatrical event, earning standing ovations and repeat bookings worldwide. The accolades have been strong and numerous. SBOWFIRE delivers an incredible live show thanks to the creative team behind the ensemble. Lenny Solomon, BOWFIRE’s founder and artistic director, has built a strong reputation as one of the world’s most skilled and innovative jazz violinists. He has won a JUNO (the “Canadian Grammy”) Award, toured extensively in the United States, Canada and Japan with The Lenny Solomon Trio, was a three-time winner of the annual Violinist of The Year Award presented by The Jazz Report, has appeared as a featured guest soloist with many orchestras. Solomon conceived of and cast BOWFIRE, arranged the program, and wrote several of the numbers. The creative team includes: Olivier-nominated stage director, Stafford Arima, whose extensive list of credits in the musical theater world include the critically acclaimed, “Altar Boyz,” the West End production of “Ragtime,” “Chef ’s Theater” at New York City’s Supper Club and “A Tribute To Stephen Sondheim” at the Boston Pops; choreographer Patricia Wilcox who has created numbers for everything from Broadway shows to championship ice skaters and has taught master classes virtually around the world; scenic director David Kornis who has lent his creative talents in design to Broadway, film and television; lighting designer Ben Stanton who is based in New York City specializing in design for theater, dance, concerts and corporate events and renowned costume designer Karen Ann Ledger. Tickets for BOWFIRE are $65-$35 and are available now at SLSO’s Box Office, online at www.slso.org, or by phone at 314.534.1700. QuickGlance Movie Reviews
“The Wolfman”
With vampires of every kind running around around Hollywood, the big-screen is ripe for a new take on werewolves. Yet despite a first-rate cast led by Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt, a classy re-creation of lateVictorian England and commendable respect for Lon Chaney’s 1941 original movie, this one’s more a yawn than a scream. The tone adopted by director Joe Johnston is oppressive to the point of suffocating. Sure, the players here are swept up in the story of a man bearing a horrible curse, so you don’t expect them to be having fun. But they don’t have to be so funereal about it. The remake casts Del Toro as a wayward aristocrat who transforms into a hairy beast after he returns to his ancestral home. Except for Hopkins, who wrings some deviltry out of a pretty silly patriarch’s role, the performers are just deadly dull. Del Toro’s wolfie may be a doomed and tortured soul. But that’s no reason to doom and torture the audience. RATED: R for bloody horror violence and gore. RUNNING TIME: 102 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.
“Shutter Island”
Martin Scorsese clearly had a ball making this one, which seemingly hurls everything the director knows about filmmaking up on screen in a blazing, masterful technical triumph. But even with Leonardo DiCaprio leading the superb cast, this crime-and-paranoia thriller is long and wearying — brilliantly constructed, obsessively detailed, yet dramatically a piece of pulp schlock that’s been overdressed and overstuffed to disguise a ponderous and absurd story. Much of the trouble starts at the source, Dennis Lehane’s novel, whose jolts and surprises range from clever to cheap and far-fetched. DiCaprio plays a U.S. marshal assigned with his new partner (Mark Ruffalo) to investigate the disappearance of a murderous mom who escaped from her cell at an asylum for the criminally insane in the 1950s. As gorgeously as Scorsese captures this nightmare world, the inherent gloom of the setting and characters overwhelm the story. With Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Max von Sydow, Patricia Clarkson, Emily Mortimer. RATED: R for disturbing violent content, language and some nudity. RUNNING TIME: 138 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“The Crazies”
Breck Eisner ’s remake of George A. Romero’s 1973 cult horror film presents the perfect nightmare for a flu-fearing times. It’s an offshoot of Romero’s zombie movies, deriving its horror from the fear that the enemy lurks both within and without you and that there’s a very real chance you might turn into a monster. Here, folks in a small Iowa farming town beginning acting strangely, leading to a government-ordered military crackdown. Four plucky survivors (including Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell) try to get out of Dodge, avoiding hazmat-wearing soldiers and their formerly friendly neighbors. There’s some unease over Big Brother, but what “The Crazies” really taps into is our pervasive unease over disease, that moment when the person sitting next to you on the subway or airplane or, yes, the movie theater breaks into a coughing fit and you realize you’re unarmed. Never mind the pitchfork. Just don’t leave the hand sanitizer at home. RATED: R for bloody violence and language. RUNNING TIME: 101 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
“Defendor”
Imagine Woody Harrelson’s slaphappy simpleton Woody Boyd from “Cheers” if he were mad as hell and not planning to take it anymore. Then give him a nasty, vintage World War I trench club and turn him loose on the mean streets. That’s roughly the scenario in writer-director Peter Stebbings’ tale of a wannabe superhero with no superpowers and no abundance of brain power, either. The low-budget movie continually shifts from comic-book spoof to gritty crime story to mental-health drama, the inconsistent tone preventing it from ever working as one or another. Harrelson plays a slow-witted man who dresses in a makeshift black costume and hits the streets as Defendor, a fighter for justice. He finds an ally in a spirited hooker (Kat Dennings) and an enemy in a corrupt cop (Elias Koteas) involved with a drug and prostitute ring. Stebbings casts Harrelson as a vigilante with a heart of gold. Trouble is, our hero seems as much a sadist as the bad guys. RATED: R for drug use and language throughout, violence and sexual content. RUNNING TIME: 102 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“The Yellow Handkerchief”
William Hurt does possibly the best haunted eyes in Hollywood. His droopy eyeballs are a highlight of this standardissue indie drama about hitting the road with strangers in hopes of reconnecting with an intimate from your past. As an exconvict aiming to reunite with a lost love (Maria Bello), Hurt infuses his character with deep, palpable melancholy, yet the story rides on transparent artifice and weepy sentiment that turns to goo by the end. The movie’s main appeal rests with fine performances from Hurt, Bello and co-stars Kristen Stewart and Eddie Redmayne as Hurt’s unlikely traveling companions. While Stewart and Redmayne’s characters are thinly developed, all four actors bring far more weight to the story than its meager drama merits. Cinematographer Chris Menges (“The Killing Fields,” “The Mission”) provides some bleak but gorgeous images of Louisiana bayou country and the detritus left by Hurricane Katrina. RATED: PG-13 for sexual content, some violence, language and thematic elements. RUNNING TIME: 96 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“Cop Out”
This clumsy postmodern buddy cop flick stuffs as many genre references as it can into the ceaseless patter between Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis. They play our paired police — detectives Paul Hodges and Jimmy Monroe, respectively — and they might as well be in different movies. Willis, a veteran of cop films, is our unmistakable straight man. Almost charmingly, he’s actually trying to solve crimes. Hodges, however, is a parody. One can’t help wondering how his partner — let alone his wife (Rashida Jones) — can treat a cartoon so much like a human. Kevin Smith, for the first time directing from a script not his own, never comes close to raising the movie to the level of its buddy cop inspirations. Harold Faltermeyer ’s synthesizer-heavy score recalls his soundtrack from “Beverly Hills Cop,” which “Cop Out” falls well short of. RATED: R for pervasive language including sexual references, violence and brief sexuality. RUNNING TIME: 110 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and half stars out of four.

Tim Burton lands in “Wonderland” By DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tim Burton, girlfriend Helena Bonham Carter and pal Johnny Depp are starting to look like wayfarers you might find somewhere along the Yellow Brick Road. Their latest journey into fantasy land takes them through the looking glass with a new rendition of “Alice in Wonderland,” featuring Depp as the addle-brained Mad Hatter and Bonham Carter as the bratty Red Queen. “Alice in Wonderland” is the sixth-straight movie Burton has directed featuring Bonham Carter and the fourth-straight that also costarred Depp, who has collaborated with the director on seven films. Burton has cast Bonham Carter as a witch (“Big Fish”), a chimpanzee (“Planet of the Apes”) and a dead chick (“Corpse Bride”), and presented Depp as a candy-making kook (“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”), a cross-dressing filmmaker (“Ed Wood”) and a kid with dangerously sharp fingers (“Edward Scissorhands”). He cast both Bonham Carter and Depp as serial killers who used their victims as meat for pies in “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” “Alice in Wonderland” marks Burton’s latest reunion with Walt Disney Studios, where he started his career as an animator 30 years ago. “It’s the weirdest thing, but it’s true. I didn’t really realize it, but I go, I do, I get kicked out, and I go, and I do, I get kicked out. I think this is the third or fourth or fifth time that’s happened,” Burton, 51, said in an interview. Burton’s comings and goings at
Associated Press
In this publicity image released by Disney, Johnny Depp is shown as The Mad Hatter in a scene from “Alice in Wonderland." Disney sum up his professional life in Hollywood, where weird sensibilities such as his usually are snuffed out before they get a chance to catch fire. After his early stint at Disney, Burton returned there to make “Ed Wood,” a box-office dud that has gone on to become a cult favorite. Burton came back to produce the animated tale “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” a perennial money maker for Disney through Halloween theatrical reissues. Burton’s first tour at Disney was
an assistant animator for 1981’s “The Fox and the Hound” and a designer for 1985’s fantasy flop “The Black Cauldron.” “I was specifically working on drawing cute foxes,” Burton said. “Once they saw how bad at that I was, what they did was, they kind of liked just my conceptual drawings, so on ‘Black Cauldron,’ I spent like a year doing concept drawings. That was great, because I just got to explore ideas.” Disney didn’t use Burton’s ideas, but while there, he made the
animated short “Vincent,” featuring the voice of “Edward Scissorhands” co-star Vincent Price, and the fantasy short “Frankenweenie,” about a boy who resurrects his dog after it’s killed by a car. The land of Mickey Mouse and Snow White did not know what to make of a filmmaker who brings domestic pets back to life. So Burton moved on to Warner Bros. for his 1985 feature debut. “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” became a surprise hit, audiences warming to the offbeat tone
Burton brought to Paul Reubens’ effete man-child. Burton scored again with “Beetle Juice” and “Batman” before beginning his long partnership with Depp on “Edward Scissorhands.” “The base level of the relationship is this — the amount of trust. I certainly trust him implicitly. I would do anything, try anything that he wanted me to,” Depp said. “There’s never been a clash, there’s never been a, ’Well, I disagree,’ or anything like that. There’s never been that, oddly.”
Next time you turn to Netflix By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge As I write this, there are five days remaining until the big Academy Award winners are announced on Oscar night. I feel the requisite twitter deep within my movie-loving self. And that’s ‘twitter’ with a lowercase ‘t’. I have no affinity for the other kind. I’ve been really motivated this year to see all the nominees--a foolish goal I’ll probably never achieve--but burning through all titles from “Avatar” to “Up in the Air” has left me with little left to get through this home stretch. What more could I do? The new movies in release this week are “Cop Out,” a buddy-comedy cop film about one loopy detective (Tracy Morgan) and his angry partner (Bruce Willis). Together they try to find a stolen baseball card. I could care less about this premise, but I’m pretty sure that Kevin Smith is completely forsaking his faithful legions by taking on the directorial duties of this one. The other film is “The

Crazies”, a zombie movie starring Radha Mitchell and Timothy Olyphant. I don’t know what more can be said on this topic. The one item I remember from the trailer, a monster dragging a pitchfork through a hospital hallway, wasn’t even enough to interest me. Please, Undead Genre, take a break. I needed sophistication this week so I turned to Dr. Netflix and he prescribed Coco. “Coco Before Chanel.” Released in April, and available now on
DVD, “Coco Before Chanel” tells the story of the legendary French designer from her life in a country orphanage all the way through her breakthrough into the world of haute couture. Gabrielle Chanel (played perfectly by Audrey Tautou) got her nickname as a young woman performing the French standard “CoCo” in saloons in Moulin. She and her sister (Marie Gillian) hoped to become famous cabaret singers in Paris, but their questionable talent stopped them from making it too far toward this dream. While working in the saloons, they both set their sights on rich men to take them away from their troubles. Coco’s sister eventually finds love with the Baron Maurice de Nexon (Yan Duffas), but Etienne Balsan (Benoit Poelvoorde) isn’t the dream man that Coco first takes him for. Using her purely for his own prurient needs and to show off to the wealthy guests on his horse-breeding plantation, Balsan is a monster just this side of cruel. While sheltered under his roof, Coco practices her craft and finds great success with the many
other lovers that Balsan brings home. His penchant for songstresses and actresses give her a prime market for her fancy hats, at first, and ahead-of-her-time stylishness later. It’s the same wealthy houseguests that include Boy (Alessandro Nivola), the man with whom Coco really does find love, if not permanent happiness. An Oscar nominee for Best Costume Design, Coco Before Chanel is heads and shoulders above other movies for two reasons. It has an emotive score by Alexandre Desplat, one of the most talented composers working today, and it stars Tautou. A u d re y Ta u t o u , t h e w o m a n k n o w n to many as Amelie, captures the subtle, smoldering attractiveness of Coco Chanel. She displays those traits that make women strong (a wonderful thing) and even make smoking sexy (not a wonderful thing at all). The zippy subtitles really may roll with all the snappy dialogue, but I highly recommend this movie for anyone in need of something refined.

McCormick’s Creek State Park One of Indiana’s best-kept secrets By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge One thing our country does right is the preservation of our parks. Some are owned and run by the federal government and others by individual state governments. Most of the parks, however, are absolute gems of preserved nature that people of all ages can use and enjoy. One such park is McCormick’s Creek State Park in Spencer, Ind. Spencer is approximately a three and a half hour trip from Edwardsville. About 195 miles according to Mapquest.com. Take I-70 east, then right on IN-59, which is a few miles past Terre Haute, Ind., then right on IN-46 until you reach the park. That is it. Very doable for a weekend trip. McCormick’s Creek State Park is filled with recreation, lodging and amenities that are sure to fulfill the outdoor wishes of everyone in the family. Hikers can enjoy the park by the 10 plus miles of well-marked hiking trails, taking them past features like Wolf Cave, Twin Bridges and the Falls on McCormick’s Creek. Horse lovers will be delighted to take advantage of the Saddle Barn, which offers guided trail rides, horseback riding for beginners and pony rides for the young. Seeing the breathtaking sites from the back of a horse is truly breathtaking and a memory in the making. If you just want to stop in for the day, their are a variety of picnic areas to choose from. Some have
shelters and fireplaces. Many are close to drinking water, restrooms and playground equipment. There are also several shelter houses available throughout the park, which are all reservable for large groups. So if you are planning a trip that takes you through that neck of the woods, bring your sandwiches and just stop by to
stretch your legs, grab a bite and enjoy the beauty of the park. If camping or cabin stays are your thing, then you are sure to find several lodging options in the park. There are 190 modern campsites with electrical hookup and modern restrooms/showers, 33 primitive campsites with pit toilets (no showers or restrooms), or group
and youth camping amenities. If RV camping is more your desire but you don’t own an RV, you problem is solved. The park offers RV rental contacts from a number of local businesses that do just that. Just pack up the necessities and come out for the RV experience. I f y o u f o rg e t a f e w o f t h e necessities, never fear, there is a camp store and concession stand located by the swimming pool. Pick up picnic supplies, souvenirs, gifts, snacks, refreshments, firewood and ice. The hours vary, being closed November through M a rc h , o p e n F r i d a y t h ro u g h Sunday only in April, early May, September and October. They are open daily the end of May, June, July and August. The recreation continues with the swimming pool, nature center, playgrounds, playing fields, tennis
courts, fishing and more. If you are looking for outside the park recreation, there are a number of wineries within a short driving distance. Whether you head toward Bloomington or Nashville, Ind., you will find several to choose from. There is so much more information about McCormick’s Creek State Park in Spencer, Ind. The site with the most information, and more easily navigated is www. mccormickscreekstatepark.com. There is also a box at the bottom of the home page that you can click on to take you to the Indiana wineries sites. The “official” Department of Natural Resources site is www. in.gov/dnr/parklake/2978. htm. There are photos and fee information listed on this site, along with all the fishing license requirements and park rules.

“Natural Elements – Abstracted Form” Jacoby Art Center hosts new exhibit By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge T h e re a re s e v e r a l e l e m e n t s of art. The Jacoby Art Center is a place where artists exhibit many different art mediums, techniques and forms. The newest exhibit is a great example of creative abstract art images. The Jacoby Arts Center is presenting “Natural Elements - Abstracted Form,” featuring the work of artists Erin K. Cork, Melody Evans, Jessica Forys-Cameron and Linda Vredeveld in the JAC Gallery from Tuesday, March 9, through Sunday, April 11. An opening reception will be hosted on Friday, March 12, at 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at JAC, located at 627 East Broadway in Alton. Natural elements are a shared source of inspiration among the four artists. For each artist nature is an essential partner in the exploration of form, relationships and environment. A dialogue between the artists and the work invites the viewer to examine everyday life with new and profound insight. The artists will give a gallery talk on Sunday, March 21, at 2 p.m. The exhibit, opening and gallery talk are all free and open to the public. The Jacoby Arts Center is open Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Erin K. Cork’s work allows the organic qualities of the natural world to live in harmony with the domestic culture of home. Simultaneously addressing our relationship with textiles in our domestic space and organic processes; Cork’s work is a place for their coexistence and integration. Melody Evans has always been drawn to vessel shapes, particularly bottle forms, baskets, and vase forms. Not for their function, but rather, for their shape, curve, and the manner in which vessels are anthropomorphized. Her previous biomorphic work often alluded to the ideas of hybridization and
“weird science”. Lately, Evans’s work contains more and more everyday life inspiration. Elements of her living and inanimate surroundings have crept into her visual vocabulary. These elements then lead to the creation of new forms, often referred to as “eccentric forms”, a term used by art theorist, Lucy Lippard to describe objects that seem familiar yet out of sync with the ordinary. J e s s i c a F o r y s - C a m e ro n h a s always been fascinated by the mystery in old things and the relationships that we form with the inanimate. Many people project emotional and psychological importance onto personal possessions. Therefore, she believes that objects are powerful in their abilities to spark our imaginations. “Through visual investigation of the phrase ‘loved to death,’ I create paintings and sculptures that represent the physical and psychological imprints we leave on our most beloved possessions,” said Forys-Cameron.
Linda Vredeveld uses forms of the body – sometimes literally and sometimes in a more distilled way – to explore a living beauty that is irregular and idiosyncratic. The paintings are multi layered spaces or surfaces, like transparent layers of skin where things like spots, lines, and drips pass over, under, and through, sometimes touching precise points. “The process with which I work has aspects of both possibilities and purpose as I look for the perfect line that stretches to simply describe voluminous forms in which layers of sensations or experiences float and intermingle,” said Vredeveld. The Jacoby Arts Center is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster the artistic development and economic success of artists and to expand accessibility to the arts through programs that promote education, participation and exploration. For more information about the Jacoby Arts Center, please call (618) 462-5222 or visit: www.jacobyartscenter.org.

Family Everybody loves
By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge The dictionary defines the word free as: “given or available without charge,” when describing free in the context of not having to pay for something. The definition does not sound as exciting as the feeling I get when I find out that I can get something “free.” Yes, I know, you hear your parents’ voice in the back of your head saying “nothing in life is free.” As true as this statement may be for many circumstances, there actually are a number of things that are free. For instance, in St. Louis there are a number of places you can visit for “free.” The St. Louis Zoo, the St. Louis Art Museum, the Missouri History museum and the St. Louis Science Center are all examples of “free” admission attractions. There are areas in each of these venues that charge fees, like the train at the zoo, or the IMAX movie at the St. Louis Science Center, but you can certainly enjoy yourself without paying for the extras. These free admission locations have actually been in the news recently, as the Missouri Senate gave preliminary approval to remove the ban on admission charges, but the Zoo-Museum District officials have rejected or are noncommittal to the idea of charging nondistrict residents a fee to enjoy the attractions. For those of us who are nondistrict residents, I sincerely thank the officials who made those decisions. When I became a stay-at-home mom after my second son was born, I really had to learn the value of a dollar and how to stretch it as far as it would go. I looked for any way possible to could cut back or do without in order to save money. Something that became kind of a hobby was to search for free samples, free offers, free coupons, or just really good deals. Most of my free or bargain hunting came from a number of sites on the Internet. Now, let me preface the following with a bit of a disclaimer. Not all sites are reputable, and make sure you have your virus ware updated and active when you are surfing sites that you have not visited

Free Stuff
before. One of the best ways to see if they are reputable is to see how many members they have, see if they have a “blog” or comments area where members post their experiences, and even check the BBB Web site at www.BBB.org. These are a few of my favorite sites to check for free samples, offers and coupons:
bigbigforums.com. This is part of the www.bigbigsavings.com site. The forums are better as they are updated all the time by consumers who find the deals and also try the deals. So you can quickly find out if it is “too good to be true” or a genuine find. You can choose from a number of forums, ie: “freebies,” “big deals (deals that may cost, but
startsampling.com. This site has evolved over the years, but is still a good one to find some good samples, coupons, etc. There are numerous other sites, you can Google “free stuff” and find many. On a number of the sites, they will even direct you to other similar sites. Another tip when exploring the
www.Walmart.com Yes, it does have a place on their site where you can order free samples. Go to the main page, enter “free samples” in the search area and it will show you the free sample area. Click on that and you will be sent to a page with a number of offers for either free samples or coupons. The selection changes often, so check back at least once a week. For example, right now you can get a free sample of Olay Effects Body Wash, Fekkai Hair Care, Ti d e p l u s F e b re z e , B e n e f i b e r and UnderJams-disposable undergarments for kids. A n o t h e r f a v o r i t e i s w w w.
it is minimal compared to what you get),” “contests and sweepstakes,” etc. You might even make some online friends with some of the folks that frequent the forum boards. A site that has been around a while is www.coolsavings.com. Not only do they have samples, but if you put in your zip code, they have many printable coupons that are good for locations in the area you live. Right now there is a printable coupon for Qdoba, a contest to win free diapers if you join “Pampers Village,” and more. One of the sites that first got me searching for free stuff is www.
world of freebies and good deals, is that it may be a good idea to set up a “just for freebies” e-mail address. Most e-mail services allow you a number of accounts, so check yours to see if you can set up one just for this sort of thing. The reason being, you will probably start receiving a number of e-mails from those sites, the companies that you requested freebies from or even new spam email. If you aren’t up for wading through extra e-mails, you may decide not to be a “freebie” fan. It is one of the consequences you have to put up with to reap the benefits of the good stuff!
One other final thought, actually sent by the Better Business Bureau (BBB). There are a growing number of companies offering “free trial offers” that are causing people a lot of grief. The BBB warns that most of these offers have catches, clauses and fine print that can end up costing consumers money and aggravation. The Consumer Fraud Task Force warns that there are a number of companies making offers for items such as books, magazines, cosmetic products, “miracle” medications or natural supplements, exercise and weight loss items, and many more. Consumers who accept these offers may be agreeing to purchase additional products and services if they do not cancel within a certain time frame. For example, you may have to contact the company to cancel during the trial period to avoid receiving additional goods or services or to avoid paying full price for what you already received. If you do not cancel, you may be agreeing to let the company e n ro l l y o u i n a m e m b e r s h i p , subscription or service contract. Most of these “free trial offers” require you to submit your credit card information and promise that it is only for verification purposes. More often than not, the card ends up being charged. Consumers should expect pressure not to cancel if they call the company. The companies make it extremely difficult to make the cancellation. As I mentioned in the beginning, there are a number of great things that are free. Just make sure to cover your bases, read all the fine print and ask your friends, neighbors and family members if they have tried something before you attempt it. Research is the name of the game! For more information on whether or not a business has complaints lodged against it or if it is a legitimate business, contact the Better Business Bureau at 314-6453300 or visit www.bbb.org. If you think you have been a victim of a scam, contact the Illinois Attorney General’s Office at 800-243-0618 or visit www.illinoisattorneygeneral. gov or the Missouri Attorney General’s Office at 800-392-8222 or visit www.ago.mo.gov.

Family Focus Pole dancers eye Olympic inclusion TOKYO (AP) — For Japan’s Mai Sato, watching all those gold medals being handed out in Vancouver is a bittersweet experience. Sato knows the demands of being the best. In her world, blisters are the rule, bruises a way of life. And the training — five hours a day, five days a week. Sato, the world champion in her sport, is as athletic, dedicated and competitive as the Olympians representing their nations at the games. And she thinks it’s high time her discipline, too, got some real recognition.
S t i l l , p ole dancing? In the Olympics? Absolutely, say thousands of pole dancers and the rapidly growing number of international and national federations transforming what was once the exclusive property of strip clubs and cheap bars into a respectable — and highly athletic — event. “I could definitely see pole dancing in the Olympics,” said Sato, who, a dancer since the age of three, outtwirled a bevy of athletes from 11 countries at the second International
Pole Dancing Fitness Championships in Tokyo two months ago. “I would love to win a gold medal.” It’s admittedly a high bar. Established sports such as squash and cricket have failed to make the Olympic cut, baseball and softball were recently given the ax, and the International Olympic Committee’s decision to end its support of nonofficial, demonstration sports after the Summer Games in 1992 has made gaining a foothold, the way judo and taekwondo did, all that much harder.
Plus, pole dancing needs to first gain IOC recognition as a sport — an uphill battle if ever there was one. No matter, pole dance enthusiasts say. Hong Kong-based Ania Przeplasko, the founder of the International Pole Dancing Fitness Association, the
sport’s fledgling supervisory body, believes Olympic recognition is only a matter of time and would be a victory for underappreciated sports worldwide. “There will be a day when the Olympics see pole dancing as a sport,” she said.

Dave and Buster’s Get ready for a night of food and fun By BILL TUCKER Of The Edge Dave and Buster’s is more than an eatery, it’s experience. An expensive experience at that. But as it so often does in my family, curiosity killed the cat and off we went on a Saturday night. Dave and Buster’s operates under the slogan, “Eat, Drink and Play.” It’s a restaurant and an arcade rolled into a building the size of an airplane hangar. There’s at least one in every major city in the United States and the one closest to us is in St. Louis (I’d call it Maryland Heights, but who’s to quibble with a Web site.) We knew, from everyone we’d talked to, to expect a wait. So we waited, but not until each member of the family purchased a game card – you have to have a card. They can be cashed in for tokens or swiped at each and every station. And. with obvious disregard to the establishment’s slogan, we played first. We had a half an hour to kill and we killed it good. Swiping our cards like crazy people, we played skee ball, Ferrari
F355 DLX, Nothing But Net, Daytona USA, Space Invaders and an interesting game called Elvis Live, in which you drop a token into a slot and that token lands among a hundred others waiting to be pushed forward to knock other tokens – a cascade, hopefully – into a trough where they are counted. You don’t get tokens back, you get tickets. And the tickets can be exchanged for prizes at the end of the night. There’s also Super Trivia, Dance Dance Revolution and Derby Owner’s Club, a horse racing game that looked interesting, but crowded. (If you’re beginning to think this sounds like a night at Alfonzo’s in Maryville, you’re right. Except Alfonzo’s has batting cages.) After a fast and furious half hour of gaming, our pager buzzed and we were ready to eat. We never did drink – couldn’t afford to. Anyway, we opted for the dining room – you can set among the games near the bar and eat if you’d like, but the excitement of it all would have been just too much. If you’re expecting Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse – or even Steak
and Shake – you’re going to be disappointed. Dave and Buster’s is, like I said at the beginning, an experience. The menu is loaded with all the clichés any restaurant worth its Buffalo wings can muster. There are cheese sticks, a spinach dip, chicken quesadillas and edamame on the appetizer menu. Want a sandwich? There are 12 of them ranging from BBQ pork sliders and the Monterey burger to a roasted turkey avocado BLT and a Philly cheesesteak. There’s chicken, there’s ribs, there’s pasta and a variety of steaks including the chargrilled sirloin steak, a peppercorn New York strip and a Hawaiian New York strip. Continuing the Hawaiian theme, you can try Huli Huli salmon, fish and chips, the island grilled trifecta – a sirloin, seasoned chicken breast
and shrimp – or the whiskey glazed mixed grill. We opted for three burgers and the mac and cheese, a mixture of grilled chicken breast and smoked bacon tossed into a bowl of pasta covered with sharp cheddar cheese sauce. It was all OK. Might have been better, but we were itching to get back to the play part of the evening. And we did. We totaled 952 tickets, which was enough for a stuffed soccer ball, a box of Tootsie Rolls and a Dave and Buster’s mug. It wound up being a two-hour, $100 investment. And it was fun. Dave and Buster’s bills itself as an adult establishment – children under 18 or 21 (depending on location) must be accompanied by a parent at all times. For more information, call (314) 209-8015.

Dining Delights Everything you need to know about raw eggs By JIM ROMANOFF Associated Press
on the microbiology of food safety at the University of Vermont.
Peanut butter recalls. Spinach scares. Contaminated meat. Is it any wonder Americans are jittery about their food? So much so that when The Associated Press recently ran a recipe for traditional spaghetti carbonara — complete with its only barely cooked egg — e-mails poured in. Had we forgotten the step in the recipe about cooking the egg? No. But it did make us wonder. Wi t h s o m a n y t r a d i t i o n a l recipes calling for uncooked egg — mayonnaise, Caesar salad, eggnog, carbonara, never mind the simple joy of dunking toast in soft-boiled eggs — what can we safely do with raw eggs? Simply put, raw eggs can carry salmonella, bacteria that can cause serious food poisoning, even death. But to be fair, any raw food can be contaminated. After all, salmonella is what t r i g g e re d t h e m a s s i v e p e a n u t butter recall last year. The Food and Drug Administration is pretty clear on the matter, telling people eggs should be fully cooked until both the yolks and the whites are firm. They tell people not to eat or even taste any foods that may contain raw or undercooked eggs. Of course the risks are highest among the very young, the very e l d e r l y, a n d p e o p l e w h o a re pregnant or have a compromised immune system, says Catherine Donnelly, a professor and expert

Open the door and let the sun shine in By CAROLE FELDMAN Associated Press The days when people swapped out heavy velvet drapes for lighter, more translucent ones come spring are gone — window treatments are too expensive for many of us to have multiple sets of draperies. But there are other ways to use your windows to mark the change of season. “The obvious thing is to open the treatments and let the light s h i n e i n , ” s a i d S t e v e n S c h i ff , owner of Dynamic Draperies, in Delaware. Here are some other tips: — Clean. Wash your windows to remove winter ’s grime, said Meghan Carter, who runs the Web site A s k T h e D e c o r a t o r. c o m . S h e p re f e r s m i l d s o a p a n d w a t e r to the ammonia-based glass cleaners. Clean windows on a cloudy day or when they’re in the shade, starting from the top and using a damp squeegee blade to wipe off cleaner, Consumer Reports advised. Clean the window coverings, too. For curtains and drapes, use a soft brush or dusting attachment to a vacuum cleaner. “Set on reduced suction to prevent fabric from being drawn into the nozzle,” the magazine said. Screens also should be cleaned. And consider choosing one of
the newer screening materials that might give a clearer view. — Consider switching to lighter window treatments. Fabrics help determine the feel of a room. If you have storage space, heavy, dark drapes can be taken down for spring and summer and stored. Put them on a “nice round fat hanger,” said Oma Ford, senior deputy editor for home design at Better Homes and Gardens. While it can cost $4,000 or more to outfit a house with custommade window treatments, Ford said ready-made curtain panels can be much less expensive for those who want to swap out drapes in the spring. And she suggests thinking outside the window box. “Consider using a lightweight b e d s p re a d o r t a b l e c l o t h , ” s h e said. They can be attached to a rod with clip rings. “You might be able to find some fun patterns,” she said. For kitchens and bathrooms, cloth napkin squares hung on a tension rod with clip rings can create “a fun, no commitment style statement,” Ford said. — Or, if you want to keep your drapes up all year, consider: Layering window treatments is one way to make them work all year. Sheers, blinds or shades layered underneath those heavy drapes will let light in yet still provide privacy. Ford likes the “tropical feel” of shades made from bamboo or
woven natural material. Fabrics in lighter colors will produce a “little more springy feeling,” she said, because they reflect the light that comes into the room. C a r t e r re c o m m e n d s s t a y i n g away from thick heavy fabrics in dark shades. A neutral color in a mid-range fabric “gives you a little coziness while still being kind of fresh,” she said. — Think practical. Function should be the first thing to consider when picking fabrics for window treatments, said Schiff, who has been in the f a b r i c a n d w i n d o w t re a t m e n t business for more than 35 years. Is the drapery supposed to provide privacy? Cut down on

bright sunlight? “Each solution has its choice of fabrics,” said Schiff, who lives in Newark, Del. “If all you need to do is diffuse rays of sunlight, you can use almost anything.” To d a y ’ s w i n d o w s p r o v i d e more insulation than in the past. And even if you live in an old house and haven’t replaced the windows, storm windows provide some insulation. “There really isn’t the need for the heavy, insulated, velvet draperies like grandma used to have,” Schiff said. “From an energy point of view, draperies are a piece of the puzzle, but not a major piece.”

— Decorate around the windows. “Moving plants near windows gives more of a sense of bringing the outside inside,” said Schiff. It doesn’t matter whether the plants are in the house or outside, or whether they are real or artificial. “It’s a great way to freshen and put a spring uptick to a house,” he said. Mirrors also can add light to a room by reflecting the natural light from the windows. “I wouldn’t recommend that people slap a mirror up just anywhere,” Ford said. “If it feels like there’s a window missing, that might be a good place to put a mirror.”

Snow – and what it means to your garden By LEE REICH Associated Press If temperatures are going to be cold, we might as well have snow. You might think that snow has nothing to do with gardening — that once a white blanket drops over the landscape, all garden activity and thoughts of gardening cease. Not so: Your gardening activity might cease, my gardening activity might cease, but some things still go on garden-wise. SNOWY BENEFITS Snow is a terrific insulator, and the ground never freezes during winters when snow falls early and deep, and stays. Plant stems go dormant in fall, not to awaken until spring, but roots grow whenever temperatures are not too cold, which may be the case under
snow even in the dead of winter. Earthworms and soil microbes also keep at work as long as the soil doesn’t get too cold. And a snowy blanket makes it easy to dig carrots, leeks, parsnips stored right where they grew. Snow also keeps perennials and newly planted trees firmly anchored in the ground. Insulated soil stays reliably cool or cold; bare soil, in contrast, experiences wider swings in temperatures and the periodic freezing and thawing heaves poorly rooted plants up and out of the ground. Winter winds can dry out the evergreen leaves of perennials like coral bells and dianthus. Once dormant and nestled beneath a few inches or more of snow, these plants are kept quiet and moist.
SNOWY MISCHIEF Snow does bring some mischief. Lettuce tolerates temperatures below freezing just fine, but its leaves turn to mush when covered by that same moist blanket appreciated by coral bells and dianthus. Snow also exacerbates problems with animals. With less on which to
nibble at ground level, deer turn their attention to fat buds on apple trees and crisp leaves on rhododendrons. Mice become free to scoot about within a snowy realm, protected from the searching, hungry eyes of hawks and cats, and the nose of my dog. Given free rein, rodents will gnaw at young bark, even chomp on those
tender carrots awaiting harvest from soft ground. A thick blanket of snow gives rabbits a leg up to reach branches they could not previously reach. Once a foot and a half of snow falls, rabbits can chomp away on young stems that were over 2 feet off the ground in summer.
