People Barry will bring the laughs to SIUE Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist set to take the Arts & Issues stage By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge
T
he SIUE Arts & Issues 30th anniversary season continues with another fabulous program this month – “An Evening with Dave Barry.” Called “...the funniest man in America” by the New York Times, Barry, having been a humor columnist for 25 years, is sure to have the audience in stitches on March 18 when he takes the Arts and Issue stage. According to Barry's website, he felt his career started when he wrote some humor pieces for his high school newspaper. The witty Barry notes that he decided to write humor as a journalist because of “the fact that you don't need to be accurate.” He also points out on his Web site that the ideas for his columns would come from “everywhere – other people, the newspapers, TV, life in general. A lot of stuff comes from my readers.” Barry's humorous writing obviously hit a chord with the American audience because his syndicated column appeared in more than 500 newspapers for 25 years, and he won the Pulitizer Prize for Commentary in 1988 "for his consistently effective use of humor as a device for presenting fresh insights into serious concerns." Over the span of his career, Barry has written over 30 books including the novels "Big Trouble," "Lunatics," "Tricky Business," and "You Can Date Boys When You’re 40: Dave Barry on Parenting and Other Topics He Knows Very Little About." Two of Barry's books were the basis for the CBS sitcom Dave's World. Barry has just recently released his latest book, “Live Right and Find Happiness (Although Beer is Much Faster), “an uproariously funny examination of what one generation can teach another – or not.”
As his website notes, in this latest book “Dave passes on home truths to his new grandson and to his daughter Sophie, who will be getting her learner's permit in 2015 ("So you're about to start driving! How exciting! I'm going to kill myself"). He explores the hometown of his youth, where the grown-ups were supposed to be uptight '50s conformists, but seemed to have a lot of un–Mad Men—like fun — unlike Dave's own Baby Boomer generation, which was supposed to be wild and crazy, but somehow turned into neurotic hover-parents. He dives into everything from the inanity of cable news and the benefits of Google Glass ("You will look like a douchebag") to the loneliness of high school nerds ("You will never hear a high school girl say about a boy, in a dreamy voice, 'He's so sarcastic!'"), from the perils of home repair to firsthand accounts of the soccer craziness of Brazil and the just plain crazy craziness of Vladimir Putin's Russia ("He stares at the camera with the expression of a man who relaxes by strangling small furry animals"), and a lot more besides.” “By the end, if you do not feel wiser, richer in knowledge, more attuned to the universe . . . we wouldn't be at all surprised. But you'll have had a lot to laugh about,” his Web site states. You won't want to miss “An Evening with Dave Barry” which takes place in the Morris University Center's Meridian Ballroom on the SIUE campus at 7:30 p.m. on March 18. Barry's performance is being sponsored by TheBank of Edwardsville. Tickets to see “An Evening with Dave Barry” as well as the remaining Arts & Issues performances can be purchased online at artsandissues.com or on campus at the Morris University Center welcome desk Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Welcome Desk is closed on Sundays. People planner City of Music celebrates St. Louis’ influence on American music
The Nine Network explores the legacy and contributions of St. Louis to America’s music heritage in City of Music, a two-hour special broadcast in two parts: on Monday, March 16 and Tuesday, March 17 at 7:00 p.m. on Nine PBS. City of Music weaves historic narrative and interviews with performances recorded live at the Sheldon Concert Hall in fall 2014 with some of St. Louis’ top musicians including Peter Martin, Denise Thimes, Kim Massie, Billy Peek and the St. Louis Ragtimers. Each performance illustrates a musical genre—such as ragtime, jazz, blues, R&B, rock ’n’ roll, alt country, hip hop and classical music—sometimes as a straight-up tribute, and sometimes as a modern interpretation or cross-genre fusion. Singer and recording artist Brian Owens hosts the special. The program features the premiere of three original compositions performed by the acclaimed ensemble Alarm Will Sound: “St. Louis Reds, an homage to W.C. Handy’s iconic “St. Louis Blues by Stefan Freund of Alarm Will Sound; “con/influences, also by Freund, a wide-ranging celebration of music in St. Louis; and “Miles-Re-Vision, a work by pianist Peter Martin inspired by the music of Miles Davis and the legacy of St. Louis artists and composers over the years. Among the highlights in City of Music’s two hours of music history are pianist John Orfe playing a medley of Scott Joplin rags, Denise Thimes singing “St. Louis Blues, Two Times True and trumpeter Randy Holmes playing Miles Davis’ “Dig, Kim Massie belting an R&B version of Tina Turner ’s “What’s Love Got to Do With It and “Rollin’ on the River, Billy Peek rocking out to Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode, and host Brian Owens and Peter Martin uniting to pay tribute to the late Donny Hathaway’s cover of Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend. In interviews, Larry Morris talks about “hip hop fusion with his group iLLPHONiCS; St. Louis Symphony Music Director David Robertson discusses the symphony’s deep roots in the city and versatile talents of its orchestra members; General Director of Opera Theatre of Saint Louis Timothy O’Leary explains how the company draws a worldwide audience for annual opera presentations; and Jazz St. Louis President and CEO Gene Dobbs Bradford reflects on collaborations with other music institutions. City of Music is a Nine Network of Public Media production, produced by Nine Network Vice President of Production Patrick Murphy in collaboration with Paul Reuter and the Sheldon Concert Hall. The not-for-profit Sheldon Art Galleries, located in Grand Center, St. Louis’ arts and cultural district, exhibits works by local, national and international artists in all media. Over 6,000 square feet of the galleries’ spaces on the 2nd floor are permanently devoted to rotating exhibits of photography, architecture, music, and children’s art. A sculpture garden, seen from both the atrium lobby and the connecting glass bridge, features periodic rotations and installations, and the Nancy Spirtas Kranzberg Gallery on the lower level features art of all media. The Sheldon actively supports the work of St. Louis artists in all mediums and features a dedicated gallery with museumquality exhibits by St. Louis artists,

30 Years of Driving Excellence
“The Munsters are coming to Greenville Car Show
It may look like Halloween in June as two of the stars of the classic television show “The Munsters will be the celebrity guests at this year’s Greenville (Illinois) Graffiti Car Show. Butch Patrick (Eddie Munster) and Pat Priest (Marilyn Munster) will meet fans and sign autographs on Saturday, June 20 during the show. Replicas of the Munster Koach and Drag-ula, prominently featured on the program, will also be making an appearance. Patrick was a popular child star who also made guest appearances on many shows of the 1960s including “Bonanza, “Gunsmoke and “Rawhide. Patrick’s work as Eddie, the son of Herman and Lily Munster, made him a TV icon. In the early 1970s Patrick was the star of “Lidsville, a quirky Saturday morning show produced by Sid and Marty Krofft. Priest took over the role of Marilyn Munster in the show’s 16th episode. Perhaps her best known role outside of “The Munsters came in 1967 when she co-starred with Elvis Presley in the movie “Easy Come, Easy Go. She was also a guest on other iconic programs like “Perry Mason, “Bewitched and “Mission Impossible. Car show organizers are excited to have the Munster Koach and Dragula on display that day. The original vehicles were the creation of George Barris, a legendary designer and maker of cars used in television shows and movies. The Munster Koach, Herman Munster’s preferred method of transportation, was created from three Model T bodies. The Drag-ula, built by Grandpa Munster and used by Herman in a classic episode of the show, was made using a real fiberglass coffin. This is a rare opportunity to see television history in person. Butch Patrick, Pat Priest, the Munster Koach, and the Drag-ula may also be seen at the Munster’s Ball, a special event to be held on Friday, June 19 at the American Farm Heritage Museum in Greenville. This ticketed event includes a question and answer session with the stars, photo opportunities, food, and other fun. Ticket information about the Munster ’s Ball may be obtained by calling the Greenville Chamber of Commerce at (618) 664-9272. The Greenville Graffiti Car Show on Saturday, June 20 is open to 1990 and older cars and trucks for judging. Vehicles may also be brought for display. For the first time, motorcycles may be brought for display only. Last year’s event attracted nearly 190 cars and trucks to downtown Greenville, Illinois.

Tuning in Alabama Shakes to appear at The Fox
KPNT 105.7 The Point Welcomes & The Pageant & Steve Litman Present is excited to announce Alabama Shakes with special guest Father John Misty live at the Fabulous Fox Theatre Thursday, May 28 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $75, $45, $35, $30 and $25 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. Sound & Color is the eagerly anticipated follow-up to the Shakes’ 2012 debut Boys & Girls, which earned the group three Grammy nominations, including a nod for Best New Artist. The gold-certified album’s breakthrough paved the way for the Shakes—Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, drummer Steve Johnson, and touring keyboard players Ben Tanner and Paul Horton—to become one of the most celebrated live acts in the world, as they delivered unforgettable performances everywhere from Saturday Night Live to the main stages of such festivals as Bonnaroo and Glastonbury. The album’s twelve songs reveal a band honed by years on the road, and drawing from a wide range of influences. The bluesy groove of “Shoegaze” or the garage-rock freak-out on “The Greatest” give way to the psychedelic space jam “Gemini.” The gently swaying, chiming title song opens the album with what Howard calls “more of a visual thing, I think of this whole scene going on,” then explodes into the urgent, tightly-coiled funk of “Don’t Wanna Fight.” Long instrumental intros and passages create hazy atmosphere, and then the intensity of Howard’s vocals snaps everything back into riveting focus. The songs were written during
breaks in the grueling touring schedule of a young band, sometimes by the members together and sometimes by Howard working alone at her home studio. She notes that there were several dedicated writing periods during the past year, but that “sometimes I wasn’t dedicating enough time, so I’d binge-write, sit in the basement and work for 18 hours for five days straight.” When the Shakes began recording at Nashville’s Sound Emporium studio, Blake Mills—a young guitar wizard who has previously helmed sessions by Sara Watkins and Sky Ferriera, and played alongside everyone from Norah Jones and

Travel Galena to mark 150th anniversary of the Civil War's end Northern Illinois town was once home to Ulysses S. Grant For The Edge
T
his small town in northwest Illinois is pulling out all the stops to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender to Gen. U. S. Grant, marking the beginning of the end of the American Civil War on April 9, 1865, with a crescendo of special events in April 2015.
Why Galena? Prominent Civil War sites far away from Galena will be marking this occasion with much pomp and circumstance. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant lived in Galena both before and after the Civil War; his post-war home, the U. S. Grant Home State Historic Site, is open to the public, as is his first presidential campaign headquarters at The DeSoto House Hotel, and the Washburne House State Historic Site, where he was notified by telegram of his first election to the presidency. Grant's pre-war home is a private residence. Nine Union generals (including Grant) came from Galena. Thomas Nast's "Peace in Union", a huge 12' x 9' oil painting portraying Lee's surrender to Grant at Appomattox, is on permanent display at the Galena & U. S. Grant Museum. Many of the bullets fired by both sides during the Civil War were made of lead mined in the Galena area. In fact, "galena" is the Latin name for lead sulfide ore. More than 75 percent of Galena is a National Register Historic District, because of its well-preserved and abundant collection of architectural styles. Grant is Galena's favorite son, and reminders of his life and times are around every corner: the church he attended; the building which housed his family's leather store; the hotel where he met and dined with friends; the train depot from which he left for Washington as presidentelect; his life-size statue which stands watch over Grant Park and a Blakely Rifled Cannon fired on Ft. Sumter in the Civil War's first battle; the lawn where he organized and drilled the 45th Illinois Regiment. This list goes on! The sesquicentennial theme "Peace in Union" originated both with the Nast painting and the fact that Grant made the unprecedented decision to allow the Confederate soldiers to return home with their horses and weapons, in the spirit of "absence of malice and charity for all". Three of Galena's nine generals are in the painting: Grant, Rawlins and Parker. Plans for the events listed below have been finalized by the Galena & U. S. Grant Museum, and more are in the works. The museum is open 9-4:30 p.m. daily, except for major holidays. For more info, logon to www.GalenaHistory.org or phone 815-777-9129.

Blaum Brother's Distilling Company, Galena's only liquor distillery, is creating a limitedrun small-batch commemorative bourbon especially for this event. A portion of every sale will benefit the Galena-Jo Daviess County Historical Society. Galena, population 3,500, is located in the bluff country of northwest Illinois, where Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin meet on the Mississippi River, about a three-hour drive from Chicago, Milwaukee and Des Moines, and a five hour drive from St. Louis and Minneapolis/St. Paul. The nearest airport is 30 minutes away in Dubuque, Iowa. To learn about lodging, dining and other things to do in the Galena area, logon to www. VisitGalena.org or phone tollfree 888-942-5362. Religion briefs Pope awards high church honor to St. Gregory
VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis has declared St. Gregory of Narek, a 10th-century mystic and poet revered by Armenian Catholics, a doctor of the church. Monday's designation of one of the highest church honors on an Armenian monk comes a few weeks before Francis celebrates a Mass to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the massacre of Armenians by Ottoman Turks that some call the first genocide of the 20th century. The title of doctor of the church is reserved for people whose writings have greatly served the universal church. Gregory, who lived around 950 to 1005, is considered one of the most important figures of medieval Armenian religious thought and literature.

QuickGlance Movie Reviews
"McFarland, USA"
"McFarland, USA" could so easily have been yet another mushy, feel-good, by-the-numbers sports underdog movie. And in beginning, it seems like it's heading there. But soon, thanks to the genuine heart in its (true) story and a pitch-perfect, beautifully lived-in performance by Kevin Costner, it will likely win you over. So go ahead, surrender. Cry a little. This is one feel-good movie that won't make you feel bad about feeling good. The story begins in August 1987 in Boise, Idaho, when a high school football coach named Jim White — that name will end up being very convenient to the story — gets fired from his job after throwing a shoe in the direction of a snotty kid who's talking back to him, accidentally bloodying him. Jim, who has a history of anger issues, packs up the family and moves to McFarland, California, for a job at the only school that will hire him. Arriving in McFarland, a farming town where the population is predominantly Mexican-American, White's daughter looks nervously out the car window and asks: "Are we in Mexico?" At a taqueria, White tries to order a burger, but can't get one. When the family encounters a group of young men cruising in their cars, he immediately thinks they're dangerous. These moments lay it on a little thick, but soon, director Niki Caro ("Whale Rider") hits a more comfortable stride depicting a prickly entry for the White family (the always lovely Maria Bello plays the sadly underdeveloped character of Jim's wife) into McFarland life. At the new school, White is made assistant coach of the football team, working for an ornery boss who can't win a game and sees nothing of sending a kid with a concussion back onto the field. Soon they argue, and White's off the team. But he has a different idea. These boys, who spend all their non-school hours picking in the fields for their parents, might not be able to play football, but they sure can run. And run, and run. White — the kids call him "Blanco" — figures they could make a great cross-country team. "The DUFF"
All teen comedies owe some debt to John Hughes and Amy Heckerling. The milieu of suburban teenage life that they explored decades ago has defined the genre since. The social divisions, the boredom, the dances, the irrepressible awkwardness and the irrational dreaminess of high school students never before seemed so accessible, and so neatly packaged with a perfect soundtrack — even if their scope was rather limited to a particular set of middle class students. It's no surprise that we continue to tell slightly different variations of the same story. There are still outcasts and bullies and war stories to be told from the halls of suburban high schools, and every generation deserves its own silly teenage misfit story. While it's neither as biting as "Mean Girls" nor as sweetly referential as "Easy A," the earnest and sometimes amusing "The DUFF" is a fine addition to the canon. In the film, Mae Whitman stars as Bianca, an overallwearing overachiever who's just trying to navigate her senior year alongside her two best friends Jess (Skyler Samuels) and Casey (Bianca A. Santos). But their dynamic is not equal, the handsome, popular and

sweetly dim-witted football player Wesley (Robbie Amell) bluntly informs Bianca at a party. Bianca, he explains, is the Designated Ugly Fat Friend (aka "The DUFF") of the group. She's the one who goes unnoticed till someone wants to gain access to her comparably more beautiful friends. This revelation causes Bianca to take off on her own, unfriending her longtime pals (in the only way that contemporary kids might know how — on every last social media site) and convincing Wesley to help her break out of DUFF prison. On its face, with the popular guy teaching the misfit girl how to fit in, it's like "Can't Buy Me Love" in reverse. Or "Some Kind of Wonderful" in reverse. Or even "She's All That," but without the bet. While "The DUFF" whiffs on the comedy front more often than it succeeds and is likely not destined to become the "Sixteen Candles" for a new generation, it is eminently watchable and even a bit touching. It takes a special kind of movie to nail a revelatory dance scene. On that front, "The DUFF" and its leads pass with flying colors. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "crude and sexual material throughout, some language and teen partying." RUNNING TIME: 104 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
"Maps to the Stars"
"Maps to the Stars" is such a deliriously perfect title for a Hollywood send-up that it's amazing it hasn't been used in that form before. The tritest of all exercises in voyeuristic celebrity worship, that flimsy fold-up guide to the homes of actors and actresses represents the ultimate divide between the "haves" and "have-nots." But David Cronenberg's film is not really about outsiders. Everyone in this portrait of the industry — whether it's a fading star (Julianne Moore) with a Hollywood pedigree, a teenage box-office juggernaut (Evan Bird), or a limo driver with dreams (Robert Pattinson) — is an insider in some way. Even the mysterious girl Agatha with the leather gloves and burn marks on her face fresh off the bus (Mia Wasikowska) quickly snags a job as a personal assistant to Moore's Havana Segrand. Her Twitter friend, Carrie Fisher (as herself), gets her the gig. "Maps to the Stars" is a strange and intoxicating mix of satire, ghost story and family melodrama, with a plot and ultimate point that remains hazy throughout despite an ardently linear structure. At the start, Cronenberg flits from character to character as viewers try to glean how they all fit together. The striving Weiss family is ultimately the nucleus of the film. The father, Stafford (John Cusack), is a TV famous selfhelp therapist to the stars, including Havana, while the mother Christina (Olivia Williams) manages their superstar offspring Benji (Evan Bird), fresh out of rehab at only 13. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong disturbing violence and sexual content, graphic nudity, language and some drug material." RUNNING TIME: 111 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

O'Connell) and his fellow fresh soldiers have little sense of The Troubles, as the North Ireland conflict was called. Given their orders to ship out from England shortly after basic training, they're assured they're not leaving the country. But it's more like another world. Promptly sent onto the burning streets of Belfast in berets, not riot gear, they find themselves tossed into an urban war zone ready to boil. At first the resistance is almost charming: Boys toss bags of urine at them. A clamor grows as women clang trash can lids on the row-house sidewalk. Soon, they're surrounded by a screaming mob: old and young, men and women. As their ranks splinter, a soldier beside Hook is shot point-blank in the head by an IRA youngster. In the melee, Hook is left behind to survive a night on his own in a city divided between Catholics and Protestants but where battle lines are invisible to an outsider. "'71," directed by the French-born British filmmaker Yann Demange, is a tightly controlled cannon-ball dive into a violent history. Taking place over one night in which a disoriented Hook tries to survive an unfamiliar city and an unfamiliar conflict, "'71" is plotted like an action film but made with the moodiness of the art house.O'Connell's Hook doesn't do much talking. RATED: R for "strong violence, disturbing images, and language throughout." RUNNING TIME: 99 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"Focus"
If the mark of a good con artist is that he or she makes you think you know exactly what's going on — when of course you haven't a clue — that's also the mark of a good con-artist movie, isn't it? To make you feel like you totally get what's about to happen — "Oh yeah, I've seen this in tons of movies," you think — and then, boom. That's not what happens at all. See, you lost your focus for a second. "It's about distraction," explains Nicky, the con artist played by Will Smith in "Focus," the consistently entertaining new film by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa ("Crazy, Stupid, Love."). And that's what the filmmakers do to us, too — they distract us more than once by making us think we're watching a predictable, even silly story. We're lured into feeling smarter than the movie — until we're not. Damn! How did we miss that? Of course, deft plot twists aren't enough. A con-artist movie has to make you find something sympathetic in the artist. And here, the film centers on a romance, so we need to be able to invest in that as well. Luckily, Smith and relative newcomer Margot Robbie ("The Wolf of Wall Street") generate believable heat together while also appealing to us individually, and so we care what happens to them — even as we keep changing our minds as to which one we should care about most. Smith's Nicky and Robbie's Jess meet cute in New York, where the gorgeous Jess is trying to escape from a creepy guy at the bar. They end up in Jess' hotel room, where suddenly they're caught in the act by Jess' jealous, gun-toting "husband." Only, Nicky figures out right away it's a scam ("You should have waited until my pants were off," he admonishes the amateur pair). Jess realizes she's met a real pro. "Tutor me," she pleads. We next find the two at a football championship in New Orleans, where Nicky and his crew are planning to scam as many fans as possible. Jess shows up, and wants in. In an extended street pickpocketing sequence, she shows herself to have not just ambition and gumption, but also real talent. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for language, some sexual content and brief violence." RUNNING TIME: 104 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

O'Connell leads thriller "71" By JAKE COYLE Associated Press The grimly gripping thriller "'71" plunges a young, inexperienced British soldier into the mayhem of 1970s Belfast. Private Gary Hook (the up-and-coming "Unbroken" star Jack O'Connell) and his fellow fresh soldiers have little sense of The Troubles, as the North Ireland conflict was called. Given their orders to ship out from England shortly after basic training, they're assured they're not leaving the country. But it's more like another world. Taking place over one night in which a disoriented Hook tries to survive an unfamiliar city and an unfamiliar conflict, "'71" is plotted like an
action film but made with the moodiness of the art house.O'Connell's Hook doesn't do much talking. He's more like a hot potato dropped into a simmering war, through which we observe the yellow, bloody haze of nighttime Belfast. The script by playwright Gregory Burke strictly avoids taking any side, but rather in the tensions within all agents in the conflict. Hook is a kind of blank slate (asked if he's Protestant or Catholic he replies that he doesn't know), that reminded me a little of Clint Eastwood's "American Sniper," a film also about an unknowing soldier sullied by the fog of war. But while "Sniper" stayed focused on its warrior, the eyes of "'71" are outward, trained on the locals. A fine ensemble including actors like David Wilmot,
Sean Harris, Sam Reid, Barry Keoghan and Martin McCann people a teeming film. Nationalists, loyalists and British military are composed variously of honest people — mothers who take pity on the boyish soldiers, commanders who want to be peacekeepers not oppressors — and those that want violence: undercover agents, power-hungry rebels. In "'71," the fighting is fueled by the worst elements of each party. "We take care of our own" is an ethos frequently invoked, but almost always by those who have no genuine interest in adhering to it. It's the note that reverberates at film's end, too, which harkens back to an earlier scene when Hook, an orphan, visits his kid brother at a rural and unwelcoming home for children.
Was Julianne Moore the best actress of 2014? By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge I devoted a lot of time in 2014’s weekly movie reviews telling you about the dearth of strong parts for women in a year that seemed to be reversing a recent trend on the ages old problem. So this week, to put a final stamp on the thought, I decided to spark your memory about the five best roles. The five best, that is, if you put the stock in the Academy Award nomination process. While under fire recently for things as varied as failing to recognize race, genre, a n d t e c h n o l o g y e q u a l l y, t h i s organization still holds the line in my book when it comes to being the gold standard for its industry’s back-patting. I’ve gushed about Rosamund Pike and the terrorizing, polarizing role
she filled in October ’s Gone Girl. Nothing gets the blood flowing like a Bond girl, in a blockbuster hit, where the blood literally flows. She was sexy, angry, calculating, and I couldn’t take my eyes off her. If hers wasn’t the coveted project that a working actress sets her sights on, then I don’t know my prestige picks from my popcorn pleasers. Amazing Amy was as amazing as they get. Unless, that is, you’re talking a b o u t R e e s e Wi t h e r s p o o n ’ s performance as woman-against-thewild Cheryl Strayed. In my favorite movie from last year, the plucky actress-cum-producer optioned the autobiographical Wild herself and ran off with a masterpiece set against nothing more revealing than a long walk with one’s feelings. She was unglamorous, unkempt, and unbelievable.
And so was Felicity Jones as Jane Hawking, the sturdy spouse to astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, who held her own against Eddie Redmayne’s career-defining performance. She was equal parts doting and defiant, but looked far more at ease on the big screen than she ever does in her timid personal appearances. It’s a people picture, The Theory of Everything, and she’s part of the reason it performed so well. Marion Cotillard was flawless in Two Days, One Night and I’m not referring to her easy, breathless French sensuality. The character was a low-wage worker and her ability to take her movie star self and explore that idea was thrilling. Yet, they all lost out on the biggest Oscar prize that night to Julianne Moore, the effervescent redhead that turns up in horror films and action
subplots just as often as she does in a A-list caliber dramas. As Alice Howland, she stars in Still Alice as an esteemed linguistics professor at Columbia University, Moore is the authority on language, words, context, and communication. Hell, she even wrote the (text)book on it. When her flaky memory starts to worry her, she finds that she’s suffering from the early onset of Alzheimer ’s Disease and that the familial component is probably going to affect the future for her three attractive, successful children (Hunter Parrish, Kate Bosworth, and Kristen Stewart). Her husband, John (Alex Baldwin), is unwaveringly supportive, but there is no end to the suffering that comes with a disease that is both rampant, irreversible, and profoundly sad. Movies about dementia aren’t uncommon, especially in recent
March 12, 2015
years, but what makes Still Alice so effective is how this one deals with the main character ’s illness with seemingly no warning. She goes from vibrant and loving to aloof and desperate in only a matter of a few months. I won’t deny that I cried openly in the dark of this show, but also that I couldn’t help but empathize seeing my own mother (or grandmother or sister) in this same black hole without a way out. So was she truly 2014’s Best Actress? I would say so given that the singular thought on my mind as I was leaving was “there but for the grace of God…” Still Alice runs 101 minutes and is rated PG-13 for mature thematic materials, and brief language including a sexual reference. I give this film two and a half stars out of four.

A unique combination of percussion, movement and visual comedy, STOMP has created its own inimitable, contemporary form of rhythmic expression: both household and industrial objects find new life as musical instruments in the hands of an idiosyncratic band of body percussionists. It is a journey through sound, a celebration of the everyday and a comic interplay of characters wordlessly communicating through dance and drum. Synchronized stiff-bristle brooms become a sweeping orchestra, eight Zippo lighters flip open and closed to create a fiery fugue; wooden poles thump and clack in a rhythmic explosion. STOMP uses everything but conventional percussion instruments - dustbins, tea chests, radiator hoses, boots, hub caps - to fill the stage with a compelling and unique act that is often imitated but never duplicated. Critics and audiences have raved: “STOMP is as crisp and exuberant as if it had opened yesterday,” says The New York Times. The San Francisco Chronicle declares “STOMP has a beat that just w o n ’ t q u i t ! ” T h e L o s A n g e l e s Ti m e s exclaims: “Electrifying! Bill Roseberry/The Edge
Above, the Monte Cristo Stranger, a raspberry filled donut topped with ham and Swiss cheese. Below, Strange Donuts located at 2709 Sutton Blvd. in Maplewood.
Strange Donuts in Maplewood is certainly different By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge I recently marked a hot spot off my “You Gotta Eat” bucket list — Strange Donuts. It's probably not surprising that I have a bucket list for places to eat, as well as it's probably not surprising that I was fired up about a donut shop. Strange Donuts is not your ordinary donut shop though and probably why “strange” is a fitting name for this St. Louis area hot spot. There are three locations for Strange Donuts now, but I visited the original happening spot at 2709 Sutton Blvd. in Maplewood. It was established in 2013 with another location popping up in Kirkwood in Oct. 2014 and one in Columbia, Mo. also in the fall of '14. I have applauded Strange Donuts creativity from afar for quite sometime, but never had the pleasure of trying its food before now. When dealing with food, taste is always the top dog, but I also give brownie points for originality and Strange Donuts certainly has a monopoly on that in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Yes folks, food can be an art form and Strange Donuts proves that. The Stranger, as its aptly named, is the odd and quirky Frankenstein donut that is created in the kitchen at Strange Donut and rotates regularly. They are often collaborations with other St. Louis area restaurants. There are such Stranger oddities as the pizza donut, the hog burger, the green tea pistachio, the sloppy joe donut served with nacho cheese tater tots and the hot pocket to name a few. There are different hot pocket donuts, one for example is filled with cream cheese and asiago with spinach and artichoke. The green tea pistachio comes with white chocolate mousse with candied pistachios and a green tea glaze. You can see why strange is the perfect name for this joint. When I went to Strange Donuts, it was the Sunday morning following the Mardi Gras Parade in Soulard. I visited with my friends John, Brian and Kylene. We were hungry, tired and looking for something a little different for breakfast. I was keyed up to check out the Stranger for that day and order some staples

at Strange Donuts. We started by picking out a dozen donuts from the rack. We went with a mixture of the strange bacon consisting of maple and bacon, the gooey butter, the blueberry jelly donut, the Husky Boy with peanut butter and Oreos, the campfire, which was a s'mores donut, the rocky road with marshmallow, the general custard, which was a chocolate custard donut and a chocolate covered strawberry donut. To top it off I ordered the Stranger, which was a Monte Cristo. It was a raspberry jelly donut topped with a piece of ham and a slice of Swiss cheese, served hot. Unfortunately, I hadn't done my homework and didn't realize that Strange Donuts didn't have a dine-in area. In summer months there is outdoor seating available, but it was a little cold for that in February. We hightailed it back to John's sister's

apartment complex where we had stayed the night before to try out these delicious-looking and different donut creations. I began with my Monte Cristo and boy what a treat. There was no glaze on the donut and the first taste I had was the ham and cheese, but on my second bite the raspberry filling came oozing out to tack on an additional flavor blast that was both unique and delicious. My only complaint was I only purchased one of these delectable monsters. As we dug into our other dozen of peculiar pastries we quickly found out that there were some hits and some misses. John and I each tried the campfire, expecting a strong s'mores taste, but unfortunately it wasn't there. It was really quite unmemorable in flavor. Then we went to the maple bacon and were in heaven. John, Brian and I all raved about
its sensational flavor. It easily rose to the top of my donut list as one of the best I've ever consumed. The maple was thick and delicious and small chunks of bacon were a treasure in every bite. Brian and Kylene and I scarfed down the gooey butter donut, too. I've had gooey butter cake, gooey butter cookies, but never gooey butter donuts, but let me tell you, it's another home run in the world of gooey butter creations. As for the other donuts in our dozen, we all agreed the Husky Boy was good, with the distinct flavor of peanut butter to accompany the Oreo chunks on top of it. I wasn't a big fan of the rocky road. I thought it was a little bland, but John really enjoyed it. The blueberry jelly donut wasn't quite as good as I expected either. Brian and Kylene really liked the general custard, too and Kylene was a fan of her chocolate covered strawberry donut, which I didn't try. Strange Donuts also brews its own Strange Donut Brew with a medium roast Kuva Coffee. As for price, the Stranger costs $5, while the new creations like the strange bacon and gooey butter are $2 a pop. For those of you lame eaters there are also regular glazed and cake donuts that go for $1 apiece. Strange Donuts is open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. or until they are sold out. They also open from 9 p.m. to midnight on Thursday through Saturday to get that late night donut fix. Yo u c a n c h e c k t h e m o u t a t w w w. strangedonuts.tumblr.com and on Facebook and Twitter. The marketing ploys are funny and creative but strange, sticking to their theme. They even have Strange Donuts apparel you can purchase online if you're into donut-themed clothing. I will venture back to Strange Donuts next time I get a chance, because I have some friends that still want to check it out and I'd like to check out more of their Strangers. Sometimes it's just nice to be a little strange when you gotta eat and Strange Donuts definitely allows you to do that.
