Making the Olympics comfortable Former Edwardsville resident rolled out the red carpet for VIPs By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge

At top, Jerri Foehrkolb Roush during an orientation for volunteers. Above, past guests Arnold Schwarzenegger and Shawn Johnson. Photos for The Edge.

March 25, 2010

Former Edwardsville resident Jerri Foehrkolb Roush has been making the VIPs comfy and cozy at the U.S. Olympic Committee’s hospitality center, also known as the USA House, for the past 12 years. At least she has worked in the hospitality and meeting planning

The committee began providing the houses beginning in 2002 when the games were in Salt Lake City, Utah. The reason was to provide a place for the athletes to go for some down time and to provide them with

division for the Olympic committee for the last 12 years, currently as the managing director of meeting and event services. Roush actually ran two houses during this year’s Olympic games, one in Vancouver that was 25,000 square feet and another in Whistler, that was 3,500 square feet. The two separate houses were needed to accommodate the large number of expected guests throughout the events, but the Whistler location made it more convenient for some of the sports that took place in that area.

the services they needed to keep in contact with their family and friends. The response was outstanding and the number of visitors climbs each Olympic season. In Torino, 11,000 people passed through the house, where in Bejing, 16,000 passed through. Although the numbers for Vancouver weren’t completed at the time this was written, it is estimated that at least 18,000 people took advantage of the two houses provided. The house is not just open to anyone. Visitors are either current athletes competing in this year ’s games, former Team USA Olympic

athletes, national governing body executives, Olympic sponsors, and other dignitaries, who must be preapproved before visiting the house. The house is a small town within itself. There are “branded” areas, for example: a McCafe where visitors can get coffee and other food items, the Bud Lounge which is also host to a huge screened television where people can view the games live while enjoying a beverage, the Hilton Honors Concierge service that can help with directions, flights, siteseeing info, etc., the Acer Aspire Zone that offered a number of computers for guests’ usage, AT&T WiFi throughout the facility and even an Olympic apparel store just for house visitors. Guests were offered three meals a day. The meant that 800 to 900 meals per day and were catered by Frambois of Staten Island, N.Y. The families of the athletes are welcome if they have one of four daily passes that athletes are allowed. Otherwise, there is a separate family “village” of sorts that houses the athletes relatives and offer separate services. This allows the athlete to solely concentrate on their performance rather than being concerned with family needs. Some of the VIPs that passed through the USA House were Vice President Joe Biden; Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger;, designer Vera Wang; Mike Eruzione, former Team USA hockey player from the 1980 “miracle on ice” team; Wayne Gretzky; Christy Yamaguchi; Peggy Fleming;, Tara Lipinski; Michael Phelps; Cuba Gooding Jr., along with a host of others. Roush works hard not just during the games, but the two years in between. She makes approximately 10 trips to the future Olympic city, checking out prospective locations that would be suitable for the next house. The two years of “down

time” are actually packed full of meetings, planning, securing contractors, sponsors and more. She spends approximately seven weeks at the location of the games, including the two weeks of competition. This is necessary for setting up, tearing down and packing and shipping the items back to the Colorado Springs Olympic Committee Headquarters. The planning group is already scheduled to leave for London, England, to begin planning in April, 2010. London is the host of the 2012 Olympics. Roush is a 1985 graduate of Edwardsville High School. She graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, with a degree in Marketing and played field hockey in both high school and college. She married Steve Roush in May, 2009, and they currently reside in Colorado Springs, Colo. She is the daughter of Jack and Janet Foehrkolb, of Edwardsville, who along with other family members, made the trek to Vancouver the last week of the games to support their daughter. “We are really proud of her, she works very hard and does a great job,” said mom, Janet. When asked about Edwardsville, Roush said, “It’s home. I know so many people. I know it has changed a lot, but it still is home to me. I had a great upbringing there.” Roush just recently submitted her resignation to the Olympic Committee. She is looking forward to a new opportunity with another marketing company, that may still have some ties with the Olympics. “I’m looking forward to a new adventure. I have had a wonderful opportunity to work at an incredible job and see the world with the Olympic Committee, but I am ready to do something different,” said Roush. Let’s see where this takes her next.

People People planner Author to sign books at Cahokia Mounds What was once among the a n c i e n t w o r l d ’ s l a rg e s t c i t i e s rose and fell before Christopher Columbus set foot in the New World. The remains of that city may be visited today at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, and that is also the location of a March 28 book signing by one of the world’s top experts on this Native American metropolis. William R. Iseminger, author of the new book Cahokia Mounds: America’s First City, will sign copies of his book Sunday, March 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the C a h o k i a M o u n d s I n t e r p re t i v e C e n t e r. Copies of his book may be purchased in the Cahokia Mounds Museum Gift Shop for $19.99 plus tax, or may be ordered by calling the Gift Shop at (618) 344-9221. The book will also be available on-line through The History Press, the book’s publisher, or Amazon.com. In Cahokia Mounds: America’s First City, Iseminger describes how Cahokia began, flourished and declined, and presents updated information on excavations t h a t h a v e t a k e n p l a c e t h e re . He strikes a balance between the conservative and liberal interpretations of the site by some of his archaeological colleagues, so that the general public can gain a better understanding of Cahokia. Isemin g e r d o e s n ot p re s e n t a theoretical view of Cahokia and the Mississippian culture that built this ancient city, since that has been done in many other books on this important site. The book begins with a review of the cultural traditions that preceded Cahokia so the reader has a context of time and place that led to the development of this prehistoric city. Iseminger follows with an overview of the sixsquare-mile site and a discussion of the major site features and structures, such as Monks Mound, Mound 72, the Woodhenges and Stockades, and the plazas and mound groups throughout the site, focusing on those where excavations and other research have taken place. He ends with a review of the factors that probably contributed to Cahokia’s decline and abandonment. Highland plans summer market After a successful inaugural year in 2009, the Highland Markt und Mehr, Farmer and Artisan Market is set to begin its second season on June 3. Sponsored by the Highland Chamber of Commerce and the City of Highland, the market will again be held on Thursdays from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at Lindendale Park in Highland through October 7. The Farmer’s Market Committee is busy planning for an even bigger and better market this year! Of course quality vendors are vital to the market’s success. To that end, a vendor’s informational meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, March 31 at 7:00 PM at Highland City Hall. Invitations to the meeting have been mailed to last year ’s vendors, but any interested growers and artisans are most welcome to attend. Copies of the Highland Markt und Mehr Rules and Regulations will be available as will copies of the vendor application. Vendors can make a commitment for the entire season or on a weekly basis. The nominal vendor fees will remain the same as last year. As an added special feature at the March 31st meeting, we are pleased to have John Pike from the University of Illinois Extension, Community and Economic Development as our guest speaker. Mr. Pike will give a presentation on Marketing Tips for Farmer ’s Market Vendors, a topic that is certain to be beneficial for all. Market Master Deanna Harlan states: “I’ve had many people ask when we’re starting our second season. They really enjoyed coming to the market last year and are looking forward to another great year!” Anyone with questions about Highland Markt und Mehr is welcome to contact Market Master Deanna Harlan at marketmaster@ highlandillinois.com or 618531-5111, or the Chamber office at 618-654-3721 or jeannie@ highlandillinois.com.

People People planner “Jurassic Bugs” invade Butterfly House Enormous, ancient creatures are invading the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House in Chesterfield this year! See life-size replicas of prehistoric arthropods, explore displays of their living relatives and learn about how these animals have changed over millions of years when the “Jurassic Bugs” exhibition crawls into town, Saturday, May 1 through Sunday, Oct. 3. Hours through Memorial Day are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday (closed Mondays); from Memorial Day through Labor Day, open 9 a. m. to 5 p.m. daily. The exhibition is included with Butterfly House admission.Fossil records indicate that some animals were enormous as compared to today’s specimens. Encounter five of these oversized species taking up temporary residence inside the central exhibit hallway. See Brontoscorpio, a meter-long scorpion that shared its environment with giant cockroaches that were over a foot long! View the enormous dragonfly, Meganeura, and giant millipede, Arthropleura, which thrived during the Pennsylvanian Period about 300 million years ago. Also on display is the largest arthropod presently known,

Pterygotus, a ferocious ten-footlong sea scorpion from the Silurian Period. These prehistoric bugs will join the permanent residents of the Butterfly House: living beetles, roaches, tarantulas, spiders, scorpions and other insects and arachnids. Compare these smaller creatures of today to their larger prehistoric relatives to learn how they have evolved over eons. Insects and other arthropods are far older than dinosaurs; arthropod fossils in the form of primitive millipedes and scorpions date back to 450 million years ago. Amber, or fossilized tree resin, is an important source of information about the history of these creatures, providing clues in the form of preserved insects (whole or in parts), pollen and other small specimens. Examine some of these important fossil records on display that date back to nearly

70 million years ago. Delve deeper into the world of prehistoric critters with Jurassic Bugs Family Days. Drop-in anytime from 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the last Saturday of June, July, August and September to explore ancient arthropods and the living insects of today through games, activities and crafts geared for children ages six to 12. The Butterfly House is wellknown for its flying creatures, featuring an 8,000-square-foot tropical conservatory with more than 1,000 butterflies in freeflight, representing approximately 80 species from around the world. Learn more about the history of the Lepidoptera, the large order of insects that includes today’s butterflies and moths, which first appeared around 160 million years ago.

Movies

QuickGlance Movie Reviews

“Cop Out”

This clumsy postmodern buddy cop flick stuffs as many genre references as it can into the ceaseless patter between Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis. They play our paired police — detectives Paul Hodges and Jimmy Monroe, respectively — and they might as well be in different movies. Willis, a veteran of cop films, is our unmistakable straight man. Almost charmingly, he’s actually trying to solve crimes. Hodges, however, is a parody. One can’t help wondering how his partner — let alone his wife (Rashida Jones) — can treat a cartoon so much like a human. Kevin Smith, for the first time directing from a script not his own, never comes close to raising the movie to the level of its buddy cop inspirations. Harold Faltermeyer’s synthesizerheavy score recalls his soundtrack from “Beverly Hills Cop,” which “Cop Out” falls well short of. RATED: R for pervasive language including sexual references, violence and brief sexuality. RUNNING TIME: 110 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and half stars out of four.

“Alice in Wonderland”

Alice has grown — not by “drink me” potion or “eat me” cake — into a 19-year-old girl in Tim Burton’s adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale. Working from Linda Woolverton’s very Hollywood adaptation, Burton shifts the story from a child Alice to a near-adult Alice (the startlingly promising Mia Wasikowska). This is Alice’s second journey down the rabbit hole, though she doesn’t recall the first. This time is less “Who-o-o are you-o-o?” self-discovery, but a formulaic (if madcap) tale of proving oneself. One misses the light wit and the “simple and loving heart of her childhood” from Carroll’s book. Burton’s film is whimsical and several moments glimmer — the big slobbering tongue of a Bandersnatch, the tweaky March Hare — but it’s heavy with the dread of Danny Elfman’s score and the impersonal rebooting of Alice as dragon-slayer. Helena Bonham Carter is brilliant as the thin-skinned and bigheaded Red Queen. Johnny Depp’s Mad Hatter is rootless but entertaining. The Cheshire Cat, voiced by Stephen Fry, feels like a bow made out of courtesy. No, this is a dog’s movie: Baynard the Bloodhound is one of the finer movie mutts in some time. RATED: PG for fantasy action-violence involving scary images and situations, and for a smoking caterpillar. RUNNING TIME: 109 minutes.

March 25, 2010

ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“Green Zone”

All the war-zone authenticity in the Arab world cannot salvage the silly Hollywood plot at the heart of Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass’ first collaboration outside the Jason Bourne realm. Their thriller about the futile search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq is a visual and visceral knockout utterly deflated by a story as unappetizing as Army field rations. Damon’s an Army guy hurled into a simple-minded conspiracy concocted by the filmmakers to explain why the WMD hunt keeps coming up empty. The cast, including Greg Kinnear, Amy Ryan, Brendan Gleeson and Jason Isaacs, generally delivers serviceable performances in roles that do not call for much more. As Damon’s translator and tipster, Khalid Abdalla does capture a sense of Iraqis’ conflicted emotions over the U.S. occupation. For pure ambiance, the movie is a marvel. Greengrass, who directed Damon in “The Bourne Ultimatum” and “The Bourne Supremacy,” applies a similar docudrama style to create a you-are-there sense of Bagdhad in chaos. RATED; R for violence and language. RUNNING TIME: 114 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“Our Family Wedding”

One enters a movie like this bracing for cheesiness. But as “Our Family Wedding” moves along, the realization dawns that director Rick Famuyiwa (“The Wood”) has made a mostly charming movie despite its cliche milieu. America Ferrera and Lance Gross play a newly engaged couple who have returned home to Los Angeles to break the news to their families, one black, the other Latino. A culture clash follows, with patriarchs Forest Whitaker and Carlos Mencia predictably feuding. It loses its balance around the time the goat gets loose and eats a bunch of Viagra. But, thanks partly to the performances, the film is mostly filled with quieter, more realistic moments. With a soundtrack of Daptone soul, kicked off by Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings. “Remember Me”

Robert Pattinson has temporarily stepped away from “Twilight,” apparently in search of his “Five Easy Pieces” or “Rebel Without a Cause.” In the film, directed by Allen Coulter (“Hollywoodland”), Pattinson plays a selfdestructive, poetic 21-year-old who quotes Gandhi in voiceover, makes love to Sigur Ros and (understandably) can’t be moved to laughter by “American Pie 2.” Set in the summer of 2001 in New York, “Remember Me” is a story of young romance (Emilie de Ravin plays his love interest) full of dread. Long before the big reveal ending, one begins to feel “Remember Me” is romanticizing — even fetishizing — tragedy. Pierce Brosnan and Chris Cooper play the fathers, each giving considerable heft to Will Fetters’ uneven script. But this is Pattinson’s vehicle (he also executive produced). He has unmistakable screen presence, but he pours it on thickly and self-consciously. RATED: PG-13 for violence, sexual content, language and smoking. RUNNING TIME: 113 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“She’s Out of My League”

Remember the hoo-ha over whether Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl made a believable couple in “Knocked Up”? The makers of “She’s Out of My League” sure do. They’ve built an entire comedy from the premise, pairing string-bean Jay Baruchel with gorgeous newcomer Alice Eve and surrounding them with a chorus of Doubting Thomas friends who tell them their relationship can never work. The central idea, vaguely lurking around the edges of the movie’s gross-out humor and then spelled out at the end, is pure wish-fulfillment. Nerds and babes can hook up (really!), just so long as the geek possesses a good heart and healthy self-esteem. One problem. The filmmakers forgot to give Baruchel’s yammering, stammering airport security worker an actual personality that might appeal to the opposite sex. Say what you want about the professional prospects of Rogen’s weed-loving loafer in “Knocked Up,” you have to admit the dude made you laugh. And, from what we’ve heard, women do like a sense of humor. RATED: R for language and sexual content. RUNNING TIME: 107 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“She’s Out of My League” falls flat By DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press Remember the hoo-ha over whether Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl made a believable couple in Judd Apatow’s “Knocked Up”? The makers of “She’s Out of My League” sure do. And, from what we’ve heard, women do like a sense of humor. The only thing Kirk (Baruchel) has is a sense of awkwardness and self-loathing. When we first meet him, he’s rehearsing the reconciliation speech he plans to spring on his ex-girlfriend (Lindsay Sloane), the same exgirlfriend who has become a regular (along with her idiot new boyfriend) at Kirk’s parents’ house since their breakup.

In this image released by Paramount Pictures, Alice Eve, right, and Jay Baruchel are shown in “She’s Out of My League.” Pretty pathetic, huh? Kirk’s fortunes take a radical change, however, when he meets Molly (Eve), a beautiful, intelligent woman fresh off a breakup and eager to ease back into dating with a safe, sweet guy like our hero. Kirk’s bro-friends — Stainer (T.J. Miller) and Jack (Mike Vogel) — are astounded and alarmed. Assessing their friend as a “five” a n d M o l l y a “ h a rd 1 0 , ” t h e y argue that Kirk is upsetting the cosmic laws of sexual attraction.

“You can’t jump more than t w o p o i n t s ! ” s a y s S t a i n e r, t h o u g h w h y e x a c t l y a g ro w n man would listen to advice from someone named Stainer remains perpetually unclear. The movie, written by Sean Anders and John Morris (who have a hand in the upcoming “Hot Tub Time Machine”) and d i re c t e d b y J i m F i e l d S m i t h , spends most of its time exploring whether Kirk can indeed make that multi-point leap. And while Baruchel has been

doing great things since debuting in the short-lived Apatow sitcom “Undeclared,” the movie gives y o u a b s o l u t e l y n o re a s o n t o believe that Molly wouldn’t bail on him after the first date. With his nasal voice and social ineptitude, we could see him as the son Eugene Levy never knew existed in some “American Pie” knockoff. But with a girl like Molly? Levy himself would stand a better chance. In fact, Kirk is such a niceg u y n o n - e n t i t y h e re t h a t i t ’ s

“Green Zone” likely to stir emotions By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge There is one major obstacle to overcome when watching “Green Zone,” a movie set during the early days of the current Iraq War. It’s a big issue that can be a deal breaker for a lot of people. Sometime I can be a little dense, so this particular item eluded me until after I’d screened the film last week. I found the movie to be well-made with a very high production value. The action was quickly paced and especially harrowing in some night scenes. The characters seemed just like some I’d expect to see in a big-budget Hollywood feature. But then it hit me. This is a recreation of events that happened in real life, more or less. Then I got mad. United States Army Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller (Matt Damon) is the leader of a squad whose missions are to venture into dangerous areas to secure high-value targets. The films opens with the men pinned down outside of the courtyard of a large warehouse complex. A sniper has the high ground at the

opposite end of the narrow facility and they have to devise a way to take him out and reach the base of his stronghold where ever-elusive Weapons of Mass Destruction are allegedly stored. Sweeping past, providing cover fire, and using bravery I can’t even fathom, Miller’s soldiers reach the bunker with minimal injuries and no fatalities. What they find, rather than biological and radioactive weapons, is a shack full of toilet parts. It’s a tense moment right after this. It seems a rash of bad intelligence has waylaid Miller’s

squad again--the most recent incident out of several where the payday wasn’t worth the effort. It’s here when you have to overcome that hurdle of knowing, as we do years later, that the WMDs that they’d been trained to locate never existed in the first place. Then why are we in this mess? I think many Americans have been wondering that same thing for seven years now. It just took a flashy exercise in handheld camera work (not surprisingly, this film is directed by Paul Greengrass--his third starring Matt Damon) to get it through to me. The rest of the film is conspiracy-driven and doesn’t impart as much political upheaval as the first twenty minutes do, although Clark Poundstone, a bureaucrat played by Greg Kinnear, is clearly the despised face of everything we find wrong in the conflict. He and Miller don’t get as close to toe-to-toe as I would have liked to have seen. During another of his doomed routine missions, Miller’s men learn from a Baghdadi native by the name of Freddy (Khalid Abdalla) that a high-ranking Iraqi general (Yigal Naor) is meeting with some resistance fighters. The tone

of the film changes from one of desperation to one of determination as Miller leads a push to make contact with the general and use his connections to help stabilize the region, something he thinks the U.S.-led coalition is going to ultimately fail at. There are two other forces that have an impact on Miller, or rather that cause his conscience to impact him. Lawrie Dayne (Amy Ryan) is the Wall Street Journal’s reporter covering the invasion of Baghdad and she is constantly harping at soldiers, politicians, and others to get more details than the meager news blips that are being offered up to the American people. The other player is Martin Brown (Brendan Gleeson), a long-time operative for the CIA, responsible for a lot of the information we have from and give to the people of the Middle East. He’s not a fan of the war and looking for a way to either bring about lasting change or to successfully cover up the wrong his work has done over a long career. Miller is a connection for both to exploit as best they can. It’s just another example of soldiers doing the dirty work. They deserve better.

Malashock Dance will roll into SIUE Arts & Issues series continues on April 1 By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge

March 25, 2010

Malashock Dance brings its dynamic, emotionally charged show to the SIUE Dunham Hall Theater for the next scheduled performance of SIUE’s Arts & Issues 25th anniversary season. The magnificently trained Malashock dancers will amaze with their jaw dropping physical moves, lifts, powerful sustained movement and artistry at 7:30 p.m. on April 1. Malashock Dance’s Associate Artistic Director Michael Mizerany, who studied dance at SIUE, comes home for this special performance. Mizerany grew up in St. Louis and attended SIUE from 1981 to 1986. Having spent his high school years performing in theatre, he said he started out as a theatre major at SIUE but one class changed his career path. “I was about 19 or 20 and as part of the acting major, you took one movement class,” Mizerany said. “I had never danced before in my life. So I took the movement class and I was like, “Oh, I love this,” and so I changed my major.” Mizerany joined Modern America Dance Company (MAD/CO) in 1986. After three seasons with MAD/CO, he relocated to Los Angeles to join Loretta Livingston & Dancers. In 1996, Mizerany joined the internationally renowned Bella Lewitzky Dance Company for their final season of touring. Mizerany began to dance for John Malashock in 1998. He has also served as guest artist with such companies as Yorke Dance Project, Francisco Martinez Dance theater and Los Angeles Chamber Ballet. Michael has been nominated a record seven times for The Lester Horton Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Performance, winning the prestigious prize in 1995 and 1996 for his solos Tin Soldier and Bump in the Road, respectively. John Malashock founded Malashock Dance in 1988 after a distinguished performing career with Twyla Tharp Dance in New York. He is widely recognized as one of California’s most notable choreographers. Malashock brings 34 years of experience in the fields of dance and theatre as artistic director of Malashock Dance where he has created more than 60 original choreographic works. While with Tharp, Malashock performed worldwide, was featured in numerous television specials (“Dance in America,” “The Catherine Wheel,” “Twyla Tharp Scrapbook”), appeared in the Academy awardwinning film “Amadeus,” and

Michael Mizerany performed in benefit concerts with Baryshnikov and Cynthia Gregory. In San Diego where Malashock Dance is headquartered, Malashock’s productions have earned top awards among the dance and theater communities, and he has garnered four Emmy Awards for his dance films. His collaborative credits include choreography for the La Jolla Playhouse, The Old Globe, the San Diego Symphony, La Jolla Music Society, and the San Diego, San Francisco, New York City, Florida Grand Washington National Operas, Opera de Montreal, Colorado Opera and Minnesota Opera. Malashock Dance performances have been described as inspiring, athletic, mesmerizing, beautiful and sensual through choreography that stretches its dancers’ bodies into unusual and dramatic positions. Mizerany explained that the upcoming Arts & Issues performance will include two of Malashock’s works and one of Mizerany’s. “This is the first time that he’s ever let anyone else do a work in his company,” Mizerany said. “So I was very honored to be able to do that.”

Act one of the April 1 performance will include some pieces of a Malashock show called “Let’s Duet.” This section of the show will feature one male duet and two male/female duets of which Mizerany will perform in. The second part of act one will include excerpts of a Malashock piece called “Shadow of Mercy.” “John took some of Leonard Cohen’s most famous music and put dance to it,” Mizerany said. “It’s really funny, dark and sensuous. It’s really a great piece.” The show will end with a work that Mizerany choreographed, “Wayward Glances.” “It’s edgy, humorous and sexy,” Mizerany said. “It has really nice music. Vocals are by a singer named Klaus Nomi. He’s a German countertenor. The music ranges from opera to pop music.” Although Mizerany will be performing both sections of Malashock’s pieces, he said that he won’t be performing to his own work. “I’ll be dancing quite a lot. My piece is very hard,” he said. “And I’m 46. I’ll let the youngsters jump around in my piece.” And how does Mizerany continue

to perform at the age of 46? “I always warm up. I really keep my training up,” he said. “Once you let that go, you’re going to get injured and then you won’t dance. I am definitely trying to not dance as much, especially the really aerobic pieces where I jump around like a fool,” he said with a chuckle. “I’m trying to not do that. The youngsters can certainly do that.” Mizerany said that he was very excited to be returning to his roots to perform, but he was also excited to visit with old friends. “Whenever I come back I get so excited because the people that first started my training are still there,” Mizerany said. Tickets for the “Malashock Dance” and the remaining Arts & Issues anniversary season may be purchased online at www.siue.edu/ artsandissues/. There is limited seating for this show. General admission is $27, SIUE staff, retirees, alumni or seniors 65 and older are $25 and student tickets are $13. Jolly, a Kansas City native, had appeared with Austria’s Salzburg Camerata and the San Francisco Opera, among many others, while John’s extensive credits included Santa Fe Opera, Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Opera. Yet in 1990, when they arrived in the Department of Music in Arts & Sciences — Jolly as a teacher of applied music, John as director of vocal activities — the university did not have an opera company. They decided to start one. “We thought, ‘this place needs to do opera,’” Jolly says with a laugh. “We started small and just grew from there.” The itinerant company — which each year would consist of the 1520 students in Jolly’s opera class — staged its first production, of Leonard Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti (1952), in the modest ballroom of the 560 Music Building. Subsequent seasons would see performances in the Sheldon Theatre, Graham Chapel, Bixby Gallery, the Saint Louis Art Museum and finally Edison Theatre, where they’ve been

for the last six seasons. “For the most part, we’ve focused on 20th century opera,” Jolly points out, noting recent productions of Jack Beeson’s Lizzie Borden (1965), Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring (1947) and Carlisle Floyd’s Of Mice and Men (1970). “I’ve seen it as a mission to do works that audiences don’t get to see everyday — and to give students a chance to learn things that will really stretch them.” On the other hand, “for this ‘last hurrah,’ we wanted to do something familiar and fun,” she adds. “And of course we now have the luxury of drawing on so many professional singers.” Set in glittering, fin de siècle Vienna, Der Fledermaus is a lighthearted revenge comedy centering on Gabriel von Eisenstein, a fastliving (if inconveniently married) man-of-means, who has just received a short prison sentence for abusing a police officer. Falke, Eisenstein’s friend, invites him to spend a last night of freedom at Prince Orlofsky’s masked ball, promising that, “all the ladies of the ballet will be there.” Meanwhile, Eisenstein’s wife, Rosalinde, takes advantage of his absence to meet with Alfred, her own would-be lover. Things go awry with the arrival of Herr Frank, the prison governor, who, mistaking Alfred for Rosalinde’s husband, carts him off to jail. Further complications ensue when Eisenstein arrives at the ball — which, it turns out, has been arranged as a practical joke at his expense. “Once, returning home from a similar ball, Eisenstein abandoned

Falke, drunk, on a park bench,” Stewart explains. “The next morning he was found, wearing the costume of a bat, by a policeman, earning the ridicule of all Vienna. “To get back at him, Falke plans Orlofsky’s ball and invites all the strategic people in Eisenstein’s life, including Rosalinde, who comes disguised as a Hungarian countess,” Stewart continues. Thus Eisenstein, “who prides himself on being able to charm any woman,” begins the unintended seduction of his own wife. “It’s saucy and flirtatious and a lot of fun,” Stewart concludes. “Everybody loves champagne just a bit too much.” Cast and crew The cast of 10 is led by tenor Clark Sturdevant (MA ’05), currently an artist-in-residence with Dayton Opera, as Eisenstein; and soprano Gina Galati (BA ‘96), founder of St. Louis’ Winter Opera, as Rosalinde. Also starring are Greenlaw as Falke; tenor Adam Cromer (MA ’04) as Alfred; and Elise LaBarge (MA ’06) as Adele, Rosalinde’s maid. Rounding out the cast are Megan Higgins (MA ’05) as Sally, Adele’s sister; Nathan Ruggles (MA ’03 and BA ’99) as Herr Frank; Debra Hillabrand (MA ’05) as Orlofsky; and Philip Touchette (MA ’06) as the prince’s valet. Tenor James Harr

(MA ’99) pulls double-duty as both Eisenstein’s attorney, Blind, and his jailer, Frosch. Jolly Stewart directs the performance, and John Stewart conducts. Sets and lighting are by Patrick Huber, a longtime collaborator who has worked with Jolly on dozens of shows, both for Washington University Opera and Union Avenue Opera. Costumes are by another longtime collaborator, Teresa Doggett.

Wash U. to host Factory Film Festival The rise of film as a commercial medium in many ways parallels the rise of industrial production. Indeed, Louis Lumière’s historic Leaving the Lumière Factory (1895), a 46-second black-and-white short that shows workers streaming away at the end of their shifts, is widely considered to be the first true motion picture. On March 23, 24 and 25, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum will explore three influential depictions of factory life with the Factory Film Festival. Held in conjunction with the exhibition Sharon Lockhart: Lunch Break, the festival will include screenings of Modern Times (March 23), Norma Rae (March 24) and 24 City (March 25).

Understanding Relay for Life's impact A cancer survivor tells her story By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge Every year about this time, the American Cancer Society begins preparations for its two Relay For Life events in Edwardsville. This year ’s SIUE event is scheduled to take place April 10 and the Edwardsville-Glen Carbon event, June 18, on the Edwardsville High School track. Most people think about Relay For Life as a way to raise awareness for cancer research, but it’s a lot more than that. It’s a celebration of life and those who have beaten cancer as well as a memorial to those who didn’t. Sure, it’s also a fundraising vehicle for research but what most people aren’t aware of is that it helps to fund the numerous services that ACS provides to those stricken by cancer – services that are dearly needed and can be life changing. A year ago, Collinsville resident Debbie Bozsa wasn’t aware of the impact of the Relay For Life event nor the important role that the ACS would play in her life. Not quite a year ago, Bozsa was diagnosed with ovarian cancer – the most deadly of the gynecological cancers often referred to as the “silent killer.” Bozsa had experienced a bout of the flu in late January, 2009, and had some minor symptoms of bloating, intestinal discomfort and fatigue in the weeks that followed – certainly not alarming symptoms after recovering from the flu. After several weeks of these recurring symptoms, Bozsa made a June appointment to see a GI specialist but also made an immediate appointment with her primary doctor. Bozsa’s primary care doctor performed tests right away and discovered a suspicious mass. The very next day Bozsa had an appointment with a gynecological oncologist in the area who delivered the devastating news. She had ovarian cancer. “Two days later, a team of surgeons at Barnes performed a three hour surgery to remove a

In the two weeks of recovery that followed, Bozsa recalled receiving a get well card from Julie Gustafson, a public relations consultant for the American Cancer Society. Bozsa had just met Gustafson a week earlier at a business meeting. Gustafson recommended that Bozsa contact ACS’s Dione Kearney, a patient services coordinator. “Now this may sound really obvious to you, but frankly it never would have occurred to me to call ACS even though I’d been diagnosed with cancer,” Bozsa said. “Even though I’ve donated to ACS for many years, I always associated them with research.” Bozsa called Kearney thinking that Kearney could perhaps direct her to research about the disease and treatment options. “I had no idea she would provide such

practical assistance on coping with cancer,” Bozsa said. Kearney arranged for an ovarian cancer survivor in the area to speak with Bozsa. “While it may seem like a small thing, to provide a referral to another survivor, it was a big deal to me,” Bozsa said. “I was still adjusting to the idea that the average life expectancy of ovarian cancer survivors is eight years, so talking to a 15 year survivor was huge.” Bozsa said that the she’s spoken to the cancer survivor several times over the past nine months and that “she has been a great boost to my morale and selfconfidence which has been no small contribution to the quality of my recovery.” In addition to referring Bozsa to the cancer survivor, Kearney invited Bozsa to come into the office to pick out a wig and to learn more about other services the ACS offers like transportation to doctor appointments and the Look Good, Feel Better program. A few days after that first call to ACS, Bozsa, her mother and a friend were off to ACS

for a wig selection adventure. “Dione could not have been more helpful or supportive,” Bozsa said. “She made the choice of a wig into a fun experience that put us all at ease. Again, it may seem like a little thing to spend an hour trying on wigs with trusted friends in a quiet, calm environment, but it meant a lot to someone who was still emerging from the morphine fog and gearing up for the first chemo.” During the wig selection experience, Kearney explained additional ACS resources that might help Bozsa and her husband, Chuck, cope with recovery. One of those resources was a cancer support group in Edwardsville hosted by cancer caregiver and cancer survivor Jeri Lampman. The Bozsas attended Lampman’s support group meeting two days prior to Bozsa’s first chemotherapy treatment. “Not only did I find reassurance and support to face that first chemo with optimism, but my husband spoke with other caregivers and found

support for what he was feeling and experiencing,” Bozsa said. “Once again, one little referral, from Dione to Jeri, made a big difference in my recovery and my husband’s ability to cope.” As Bozsa endured several rounds of chemotherapy, she turned to the people she had met through ACS for support and advice. Although she continues to fight to remain in remission, Bozsa is scheduled to participate in three Relay for Life events – Edwardsville, Collinsville and Breese. She’s learned in her fight against cancer that “little things can make a difference and little things DO make a difference.” A simple greeting card from Gustafson served as the catalyst to change Bozsa’s life. “That little card, that little moment of caring from Julie led to 15, 20, other wonderful things that happened to me through the ACS,” Bozsa said. “Julie’s note seemed so simple and so ordinary, but it made a huge difference to me.” Bozsa hopes that those who may not have participated in past Relay For Life events or donated to the fundraiser because they didn’t think they alone could make a difference will see from her story that small things – walking on a team, donating a small amount or volunteering – will make a difference. “In my fight against cancer, I’ve come to realize there are several small things that I can do to make a difference,” Bozsa said. “One is to reach out and spread the word about the silent symptoms of ovarian cancer. Another is to raise funds for Relay for Life, so that other survivors and caregivers can experience the practical assistance of the American Cancer Society in coping with cancer.” Anyone in the community who would like to form a Relay For Life team or join an existing team can visit either www. relayforlifeedwardsville.com or www.relayforlifesiue.com. Family Focus DIY prom dresses? Some teens prefer them By MELISSA KOSSLER DUTTON Associated Press When Karynn Johnson steps onto the dance floor at her senior prom, she won’t have to worry that any of her classmates will be wearing the same dress. She knows her hot pink tulle and satin dress will be unique because she’s designing and making it herself. “I don’t want to be wearing the same thing as somebody else,” said the 18-year-old, who is in her second year of sewing class at Lincoln High School in Stockton, Calif. Johnson, like some other fashionconscious teens, makes clothes as a creative outlet. Television shows featuring fashion designers, and a growing number of celebrities launching their own clothing lines, have helped build interest in do-ityourself wardrobes. “Fashion design is very hot right now,” said Fern Bass, owner of Bass Arts Studios in Montclair, N.J. “There’s a real desire to touch and feel and use your hands.” Last year, Bass offered a class in making prom dresses. This year, some students are making formal wear in their general sewing classes. Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, the Hudson, Ohio-based fabric retailer, has held a prom dress sewing competition since 2008. Usually about six Lincoln High students make their own dresses, said Gail McAuley, who teaches fashion design there. The girls love the chance to show their personalities in clothing, she said. “If you make your own dress, you’re definitely making a statement,” she said. Claire Pasch, a senior at North High School in North St. Paul, Minn., likes to sew her own clothes and remake store-bought items. “All my clothes are altered in some way,” she said. “It’s an easy way to express myself.” For prom, she’s making a silky, knee-length blue gown with a sheer black overlay. She’s run into a few challenges: The first time she assembled the dress, it was too small. She also sewed one of the pieces in backward and upside down. “The only hard part of the dress was getting it to fit,” said Pasch, 18, who started sewing when she was

12. “It has lots and lots of layers. Lots of pins have been used.” She has spent about five hours a week over the last two months working on the dress, which is nearly complete. “It’s time consuming,” she said. “You have to be willing to take the time and learn.” Pasch’s teacher, Jane Hinrichsen, typically steers her more talented students toward prom dresses. Usually five or six students can pull it off, she said. The best results are featured in a school prom fashion show. “They usually get a lot of attention,” Hinrichsen said of the student-sewn garments. “I’m not saying every dress that comes out of my class is fantastic, but there’s some pretty cool dresses.” Hinrichsen said many of her students consider sewing as a possible career. She credits the reality show “Project Runway” — on which aspiring designers compete to make the best clothing with limited time and money — with heightening interest in sewing and clothing

Music Old Rock House to host Monte Montgomery By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge The Old Rock House in downtown St. Louis is becoming one of the hottest places to hang out and hear some great musical talent. This will definitely be the case when guitarist Monte Montgomery brings his best to St. Louis. Named one of the “Top 50 AllTIme Greatest Guitar Players” by Guitar Player Magazine, Monte Montgomery will bring his “guitar god” performance to the Old Rock House, 1200 South Seventh Blvd., in St. Louis. Montgomery will play the “Rock House” on Sunday, April 11, at 8 p.m., for fans age 21 and over. Tickets are on sale now for for the event for $12. Discovered by Terry Lickona, producer of Austin City Limits, after he plucked the relatively unknown guitar talent to tape a segment of the legendary show. This was the beginning of a rock and roller coaster ride for Monte Montgomery. “I’ve resisted temptation to be just that guitar gunslinger from Austin, Texas,” says Monte. “I strive to have more depth, to be more layered as an artist, songwriter and singer.” With the release of his latest CD “Monte Montgomery,” he is cementing his place as not just some blazingly electrified acoustic guitar playing freak of nature, but also a rare and true triple threat; songwriter, singer and master musician. “I want my music to be accessible to everyone,” says Monte. Accessible it is, but he’s still managed to make a record that is uncompromising. The virtuoso-like trademark guitar

licks and arrangements you’d expect from Monte are there, forming the rich and colorful aural backdrop for his insightful songwriting and amazing voice. The end result, in a day of homogenized, digitalized, and processed music, is that this new project stands out as a throw back to the great pop rock records of the past. Recorded live at the

legendary Masterlink Studio, the textured, deep, rich, nuanced and just plain rocking 12 tracks run the gamut, showcasing Monte’s stylistic diversity beginning with the opening album track “River,” an almost primal seven minute dark bluesy roots rocker, and ending with “Midlife Matinee,” a wistful ballad that soulfully explores the turning points and crossroads of life, love

and loss. In between, it’s a mix of dark, edgy rock to light, breezy pop-like melodies. There’s the pure rocker “Can’t Fool Everyone” and the jazzy, vibey “Could’ve Loved You Forever.” And just when you think you’ve got him pegged, Monte changes it up to leave you breathless with the sensual, lyrical, Latintinged “Moonlight Tango.” “All of these songs are road tested,” laughs Monte when you ask him to explain how he chose what to record for this record. “I don’t write with a project in mind. I write to play live, for my fans. My audience is great, they tell me what to record. It’s like having a built-in focus group.” Long a big draw on the live music scene, Monte’s non-stop touring schedule this year has included ParkPop (one of the largest music festivals in Europe). A Monte Montgomery show is likened to a musical religious experience. “I wanted to capture what I do live on this record. I want people to close their eyes and envision themselves at one of my concerts.” To do that Monte enlisted the help of the hip, rock producer John Billings and Rob Clark, Grammy nominated Neil Young and CSN&Y recording engineer. “In the past my records were made in my hometown of Austin,” says Monte. “We went to a larger (studio) room in Nashville for this one which, with some very clever microphone placement techniques from Rob and John, enabled us all to set up in the same room and just play each song straight through. These are live takes, band tracks and no overdubs, with the only exception being some

different instrument parts (string section and B3) added later to some tracks.” All the songs were written by Monte, with the exception of “Little Wing.” Monte’s blistering interpretation of the Jimi Hendrix classic is a fan favorite but has never been recorded in a studio environment. “I never play it the same way twice,” says Monte. “So when making this record we planned for “Little Wing” to be the last thing we attempted to track every night in the studio and if we get it, we get it. If not, we would just leave it to the live performances. On the second night, after a long day in the studio, the track we got was like, wow. We knew it was magic.” Ironically, it’s the cover of another rock pop classic that is bringing Monte a high profile fanbase and opening up new doors. After seeing Monte’s version of “Sara Smile” on YouTube, Daryl Hall (Hall & Oates) was so blown away he invited Monte to be the featured artist on Live From Daryl’s House, the popular web-based music show. T h e s e a c c o m p l i s h m e n t s a re quite a distance from Birmingham, Ala. where Monte learned to play piano and trumpet. At the age of 12 Monte moved to Texas to live with his mom, a singer/songwriter who instilled in him a passion for music and a taste of the life he was destined to lead as he sang and performed with her in Hill Country picking parlors. Music Tuning in Saint Louis Chamber Chorus to present “Strings Attached” While the pairing of choir and guitars might not seem a natural one, this program will certainly demonstrate the versatility of the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus. In a partnership ideal for a season titled “Collaborations II,” the Chorus will be joined by the celebrated Hanser McClellan guitar duo, which has been thrilling audiences across the country since 1996. Though unusual, the mix of guitars and choir has interested a number of great composers. Works by Heitor Villa-Lobos and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco form the heart of this program. VillaLobos’ “Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5” is one of the most haunting and recognized works by Brazil’s best known composer. It will be performed to an arrangement by Bob Chilcott, formerly of the King’s Singers. Chilcott’s arrangement will be receiving its U.S. premiere at this concert. Castelnuovo-Tedesco, whose fame seems inextricably connected to the guitar, marries his music to the poetry of Spain’s Federico Garcia Lorca in a cycle of Spanish songs, “Romancero Gitano.” In the music

and words, the audience will feel the passion of Spain, its people and customs. Additionally the Chamber Chorus will perform songs in praise of stringed instruments by Zoltan Kodaly and Sasha Johnson Manning, lute songs full of wit by John Dowland and, from Franz Schubert, Romantic lieder for guitar and men’s voices. Join the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus with “Strings Attached?,” at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 11 at Grace United Methodist Church. Parking is free. For more information about the concert, and tickets, call 636-4584343.

Composed by Illinois Wesleyan Professor of Music David Vayo and book and lyrics written by alumna Nancy Steele Brokaw class of ‘71, Fertile Ground focuses on the land of Central Illinois and the people who farm it. The show centers on the lives of Ben and Esther Morrow, a Central Illinois couple who farms

the old family homestead under increasingly difficult conditions. Robert Mangialardi, who is the director of opera at IWU, is the director and executive producer of the show. He is also the executive director of Prairie Fire Theatre, which commissioned the work in 2005.

Under the musical direction of adjunct faculty member and University organist Susan Klotzbach, the opera will be fully staged with a 14-piece orchestra, as well as a student cast of 18. For additional information, contact the School of Music office at (309) 556-3061.

Dossin Great Lakes Museum in Detroit marks 50th DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Historical Society is kicking off a yearlong observance of the 50th anniversary of the Dossin Great Lakes Museum this weekend. The events begin Saturday with a symposium for maritime enthusiasts at the museum on Belle Isle featuring author Robert Schultz. His books include “We Were Pirates,” and he’ll talk about the submarine USS Tambor. Other highlights of the celebration include a museum birthday party July 24.

The museum is dedicated to preserving and presenting the legacy of the Great Lakes. It opened July 24, 1960 on the former site of the Maritime Museum of Detroit, which for seven years was aboard a wood schooner.

Latin American cultural event slated for Denver DENVER (AP) — Latin American artists will showcase works ranging from a mural chiseled out of vinyl and a large-scale reproduction of the first ever particle accelerator during a monthlong Denver event that Mayor John Hickenlooper said will highlight the Western Hemisphere’s common heritage. The event featuring artists from 35 countries will be a “world’s fair” of ideas, Hickenlooper said, with current and former world leaders also participating in forums around the city beginning July 1. The festival will be called the “Biennial of the Americas.” The goal is to have Denver host the event every even-numbered year. Preparations are already under way at the downtown McNichols building, the previous location of a Denver library and most recently the city’s treasury building. The building will be the main stage of the event, with musical performances three nights a week, said Paola Santoscoy, an event curator. The building will also include

Exhibits will also be shown at the Museo de Las Americas, the Denver Botanic Gardens and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. The Museum of Contemporary Art will have the particle accelerator exhibit, as well as a light display mapping the migration of people from Mexico into the U.S., said Adam Lerner, the museum’s director. Officials are still working out the details of whether there will be admission fees to the various exhibits. The event is expected to cost about $3 million, said Rachel Chaparro, a festival spokeswoman. The money will be privately raised. Confirmed speakers for the forums include former Mexican President Vicente Fox; Federico Pena, who was Denver’s first Hispanic mayor and a national co-chairman of President Barack Obama’s campaign; and U.S. Sens. Mark Udall and Michael

Hickenlooper said Denver is a perfect location for an arts biennial because the city is “on the spine of the hemisphere” — the Rocky Mountains go down the same geological structure that turns into the Andes. But, he said, “the real reason is that no one else was doing it.”

New music museum in Jamaica to show Marley, Tosh KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Jamaica plans to open a music museum next year that officials say will feature rare pieces from the island’s music history, such as the sole album that the late reggae star Bob Marley produced before he gained international fame. Artifacts will include a cassette tape in which another reggae great,

Peter Tosh, jams a blues song with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, museum curator Herbie Miller said Sunday. The tape was recorded in June 1977 in New York City, said Miller, who was Tosh’s former manager. It will be placed alongside the album “Escape from Babylon” by American singer Martha Velez that Marley produced in 1976. The island’s music preservation took a major hit two years ago when officials discovered that a massive collection of 1970s music, including original recordings by Marley and Tosh, disappeared from the archives of the former Jamaica Broadcasting Corp. The collection has not been found.

Dining Delights

Jicama Introduce your family to a new vegetable By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge With the recent earthquakes in Chile and Haiti and freezing weather in Florida, the rumor is that the price of produce is going to sky rocket. Maybe it is time to branch out a bit in your vegetable repertoire and try something new that isn’t necessarily from those regions. Jicama is not typically at the top of our shopping lists, but maybe it should be. Very versatile in recipes and healthy, think about giving it a try. Jicama doesn’t look like much, but once you get past its homely exterior, this refreshingly different vegetable is sure to delight! Frieda’s Specialty Produce, located in Los Alamos, Calif., encourages shoppers to pick one up on their next trip to the Schnucks produce department. Frieda’s Specialty Produce is one of Schnucks main produce suppliers. Also known as a Yam Bean or Mexican Potato, Jicama is grown on vines and is actually a member of the legume (bean) family. This bean is downright ugly with its dusty-beige scabby skin and turnip-like shape. It ranges in size from a few ounces to up to six pounds, with the majority weighing between two and four pounds. Once you remove its fibrous brown skin with a paring knife, you’ll find a lovely creamywhite interior with a juicy, crisp texture and deliciously refreshing, slightly sweet taste that is often compared to a combination of potato and apple. Jicama is being discovered as a dieter ’s top veggie thanks to its low-calorie content and excellent, satisfying texture. It’s also gluten-free (great for those with celiac disease), and a good source of Vitamin C. Tasty, healthy, and versatile, Jicama can be enjoyed raw or cooked. A favorite way to enjoy it in Mexico is chopped fresh into sticks and topped with fresh lime juice and chili powder. Use Jicama in place of water chestnuts in stirfries, or steam, boil, mash or fry it like a potato. One of the most popular Jicama applications in the U.S. is in refreshing slaws and fresh salads. Simply grate or julienne and combine with citrus or vinegar and spices such as cilantro and chili powder. When selecting Jicama at your supermarket, avoid those that are wet, slimy or have soft spots. Jicama should be kept cool and dry, but never damp or sprayed with water. Once home, keep your Jicama in a cool, dark place (not the refrigerator), such as a pantry where you store

Dining Delights Sample-size bottles of wine may catch on By MICHELLE LOCKE Associated Press NAPA, Calif. (AP) - Thousands of people visit the Domaine C a r n e r o s Wi n e r y e a c h y e a r, snapping pictures in front of the 18th-century style chateau and sipping wine on the terrace overlooking a sweep of green vineyards. Now, the winery hopes to extend the experience with new, samplesized bottle kits that aim to send the tasting room experience home — you read the tasting notes, you sip, you rekindle those sensory memories. All without ponying up for a full bottle of untried wine — or stripping down for an airport security check. “You can stay in Iowa or New York or Miami, wherever you are, and you can have this experience come to you,” says Eileen Crane, CEO and founding winemaker of Domaine Carneros. The idea seems simple enough. You try sample sizes of drapes, mouthwash and wallpaper. Why not wine? But test-driving wine isn’t as simple as opening a big bottle and pouring it into a bunch of little ones, says Tim Bucher, CEO and founder of Ta stin gRoo m Inc ., which launched last year and is making the 50-milliliter samples for Domaine Carneros. For one thing, wine is sensitive to oxygen. So if a little bit is exposed to a lot of oxygen, which is what would happen if you merely poured wine through a funnel, that will change the character of the wine. Beyond that, each winery has its own method of bottling, such as “sparging,” in which bottles are filled with an inert gas before filling to ensure the right conditions. Bucher ’s process involves a patent-pending technology called Total Anaerobic Sample Transfer Environment — TASTE — that aims to replicate what the winery does on a miniature scale. Transfers are conducted in a sealed, zero-oxygen chamber, similar to a semiconductor “clean room,” and the goal is to come up with something that duplicates the tasting room experience. “For us it was never about taking wine from a barrel and just putting it into a smaller vessel. That would not capture the real product that wineries are selling,” Bucher says. While it’s hard to say for certain this hasn’t been done, samplesize wine bottles appear to be new, says Robert Smiley, director of wine industry programs in the Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Davis. It’s too early to say whether the kits will be successful, but they sound like a good idea, he

March 25, 2010

says. “I’m all for innovation.” For Bucher, the power of tryand-buy wine grew out of his experiences at his own winery. Going over the books, he realized, “Wow, my tasting rooms are gold. I asked myself how could I scale my tasting rooms intergalactically.” Another player in the small-isbig trend is San Francisco-based Crushpad, the do-it-yourself winery where individuals can select fruit and supervise the making of small batches of wine to get the vintner experience without the farming headaches (and sizable capital investment). Crushpad’s “Tiny Bottles,” also 50 milliliter, use an oxygen-free transfer system and are being used in conjunction with Brixr, a Web-based tasting service. At Domaine Carneros, the kits will be available in the Napa Va l l e y t a s t i n g ro o m — p r i c e about $25 — and also will be offered to wine club members as a convenient, low-cost way to try wines. Domaine Carneros is primarily known for its sparkling wines, so the six-bottle kits are being used to showcase its lesserknown still wines. “We think it’s a wonderful way for people to reconnect with the winery,” says Crane. ••• The same natural chemistry that makes asparagus so notoriously hard to pair with wines also gives it a fresh grassy flavor that makes it an excellent match for so many foods. Sweet foods, such as succulent scallops or shrimp, go well with the earthy, green flavors of springs’ most famous sprout. But so do salty ingredients, such as bacon, prosciutto or a pungent blue cheese.

Asparagus and nuts also marry well. This recipe pairs the vegetable with the sweetness of slivered almonds cooked in butter until both are golden brown. It p a i r s n i c e l y w i t h p ro s c i u t t o wrapped pork tenderloin, the sauce for which continues the almond theme. ASPARAGUS WITH BROWNED BUTTER AND SLICED ALMONDS Start to finish: 20 minutes Servings: 8 2 pounds thin, green asparagus, woody stems trimmed 5 tablespoons butter 1/2 cup sliced almonds Salt, to taste In a large skillet over mediumhigh, bring 1 inch of lightly salted water to a boil. Add the asparagus and simmer, uncovered, until tender, about 4 minutes depending on the size of the spears. Drain and transfer to a serving plate. Cover with foil to keep warm. Return the skillet to mediumhigh heat and add the butter. When melted, add the almonds and cook, stirring often, until the butter is dark brown and the almonds are golden. Season with salt. To serve, spoon the almonds and browned butter over the asparagus. Falcon Diner Ameristar Casino-St. Charles 4 stars

This top notch diner serves more than typical diner fare and you will not leave hungry. With their “Happy Days” decor and a breakfast, lunch and dinner menue that includes a one pound chicken fried steak and burgers made to order, you will have to ask for a doggy bag. Their bakery counter is so popular, they had to give it a place of its own outside the diner so passers by can enjoy the magic also.

Home & Garden Ask a designer – white can be fresh, practical By MELISSA RAYWORTH Associated Press When interior designer Betsy Burnham redecorated her office recently, she made a decision that surprised her staff: She focused on the color white. White walls, white ceilings, white furniture, even white chandeliers. “I’m a huge color fanatic,” she says, “but I just think white makes color pop so beautifully.” Her favorite colorful accessories “never looked as good” as they do now against a white backdrop. “White is crisp, it’s young and it’s really flexible.” Decorating with white can be intimidating. But, says designer Brian Patrick Flynn of decordemon. com, “used correctly, white lets other things truly work as the breakout stars.” Yes, there are potential pitfalls in working with white (you’re probably envisioning red wine spilled on a white sofa). But it can — honestly —

out those few items and have an entirely different look. Most surprising, white items can be easy to care for. Many white fabrics are chemically treated to be stain-resistant (or you can have them treated), and all-white slipcovers can be laundered with bleach. White vinyl, a favorite of Flynn’s, doesn’t stain. And white tables can be protected by glass tops. Be careful in selecting upholstery, of course, and especially carpeting. A white carpet is “a train wreck waiting to happen,” says Flynn, unless you can easily clean it (surprisingly, fluffy flokati rugs are often machine washable) and won’t mind doing that often. by white paint. Their imperfections are transformed into appealing texture. Designer Taniya Nayak, host of HGTV’s “Destination Design” and HGTV.com’s “$100 Half Day

Design” series, loves spray-painting old picture frames and mirrors a glossy white. “It instantly gives them a fresh, mod look,” she says. The backdrop of a white floor and walls makes familiar furniture, window treatments and accessories stand out in a new way. White can feel traditional when paired with ornate pieces, or utterly modern with streamlined furniture and chrome. “White can also kind of work as a mediator,” Flynn says. “Just like bringing in a marriage counselor, white will work as a mediator between soft and loud colors. You can use it to work as a bridge between two colors.” And a room that’s primarily white is easily redecorated with little expense. At her Los Angeles design firm, Burnham did a white bedroom for a client that included splashes of color in bedding and throw pillows. If the client gets bored, says Burnham, she can swap

Home and Garden White Continued from Page 24 Flynn loves doing white walls and furniture with bold color on the ceiling, in accessories and in the interiors of bookcases. Nayak recently created a nautical look for her HGTV series that pairs white furniture, ceilings and columns with dramatic navy blue

walls and splashes of yellow. If you prefer something preppier, she says, try white and navy with a bit of bright green. (Other color combos she likes: Rooms done entirely in black and white, or white with gray and chartreuse accents.) If you have a room with large windows, you’ll make the view more of a focal point by doing a very white room. “The view becomes your art,” says Nayak. These designers say the options f o r w o r k i n g w i t h w h i t e a re

numerous. White decor contrasts well with textured stone or concrete floors, and looks glamorous paired with lots of green plants. Another choice: “Find wallpaper that’s toneon-tone, or white but embossed with texture,” Nayak says. “Wallpaper is huge right now.” TREADING CAREFULLY Choose your shades of white carefully. “You want it to be livable, not like Liquid Paper,” Burnham says. “If there’s too much blue in it, it’s just

going to be blinding.” Some whites are warmer, with a slightly yellow undertone, while others have a cool, bluer tinge. There are also greenish whites, purplish whites and many other varieties. If you’re using several white elements in one room, a mix of cool and warm whites can clash. And remember that changes in daylight (from golden sunshine to the gray

light of a cloudy day) may change the way a particular shade of white appears. If you’re using glossy white paint, it will draw attention to imperfections in ceilings, walls, floors and furniture. If that’s not appealing to you, Nayak says matte paints are better for hiding imperfections: “Matte is a flat look, but washable.”
