People People planner Botanical Garden plans Herb Days The 8th Annual Herb Days, presented by the St. Louis Herb Society and the Garden Gate Shop, return to the Missouri Botanical Garden, Apr. 29 through May 1. Choose from a wide selection of potted fresh herbs, including new and hard-to-find varieties. Browse among aisles of over 14,000 herb plants, including over a 100 varieties of plants including; 13 basils, eight mints, 13 lavenders, five rosemarys, 12 thymes, and 10 sages; both culinary and ornamental. Prices range from $2.75 to $4.50. St. Louis Herb Society volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and give personalized advice and guidance on selecting, planting, growing and using herbs.
Several healthy herbs will be available, including the 2010 Herb of the Year: dill. Three different varieties of dill will be offered at this year ’s Herb Days including Hercules, Bouquet, and Fernleaf. “Dill is delicious in summer recipes like potato salad, and tea made from steeping dill seeds promotes digestion,” said Paulette Bliss with the St. Louis Herb Society. “Dill is also a goodplant to encourage swallow tail butterfly caterpillars, so it’s a good idea to plant extra for the butterflies.” There are a number of dill recipes available in the St. Louis Herb Society’s award-winning cookbook “Herbal Cookery: From the Kitchens and Gardens of the St. Louis Herb Society,” available for purchase in the Garden Gate Shop at the Missouri Botanical Garden. “Herbal Cookery,” is the winner of the 2009
Gourmand World Cookbook Award for Best Fundraising Book and features recipes that use familiar and not-so-familiar herbs. The Garden Gate Shop will also sell gardening merchandise, tools and fertilizer to start or maintain your herb garden. Herbaria will host a trunk sale of its handmade herbal soaps in the lobby throughout the sale. If you’re interested in cooking with herbs, the Missouri Botanical Garden is offering a class on “Growing and Using Herbs,” Thursday, May 17 from 9:30 am to noon at the William T. Kemper Center for Home Gardening. The St. Louis Herb Society will give the very best instructions on how to grow herbs in St. Louis. Learn how to propagate, transplant, grow, and use some favorite culinary herbs. Sample herbal delights and receive starter herbs to take home.
The class is $35 for Garden members and $40 for non-members. For more information or to register visit www. mobot.org/classes. Herb Days is included with Garden admission of $8; St. Louis City and County residents enjoy discounted admission of $4 and free admission on Wednesday and Saturday mornings until noon. Children ages 12 and under and Garden members are free. The Missouri Botanical Garden is located at 4344 Shaw Blvd. in south St. Louis, accessible from Interstate 44 at the Vandeventer exit and from Interstate 64 at the Kingshighway

A preview of all of the art pieces available for auction will begin at 6 p.m. in the Leclaire Room of the Jay Hoffman building. This event began in 1979, when the Friends of Art began assisting the Art and Design Department with fundraising to enhance the university’s undergraduate and graduate programs. Every year the auction grows and becomes more popular. The Friends of Art has donated annually to the graduate scholarship, and it is believed that a full scholarship will be available in the future. The proceeds are also used to invite visiting artists and lecturers to the Art Department, to purchase books and videos for the university and to fund awards for university and high school student artists. A few of this year.s artists are featured below: P a t r i c i a Vi v o d - g r a d u a t e d from SIUE with a degree in art education and taught high school
art for 25 years before returning to SIUE to pursue a graduate degree. SInce earning an MFA in printmaking in 2003, she has exhibited her art in over 50 juried shows, invitationals and galleries. The Arts
Art Continued from Page 5
Above, is “Sunfish” by Patricia Vivod. At top right is “Spirit Place” by Peter Brown. Photos for The Edge.
Ron Vivod – 1977 graduate of SIUE. Studied art at Washington University, SIU Carbondale, and Munich, Germany. He is a retired graphic designer art illustrator. Jerie Artz-”Every artist dips his brush into his own soul and paints his own nature into his picture.” – Henry Ward Beecher. Ms. Artz begins her bio with this quote. Dipping her brush into her soul and creating something of beauty is what she attempts each time she paints. She enjoyed art at an early age and was inspired by her mother who painted oils and water colors. Her mother encouraged her by saying, “No one will tell you to sit down and paint. You have to take the time, you’re worth it.” She finds each time she attempts to recreate on paper or porcelain a portion of the Creator’s work of art, it brings her joy. She lived in France for many years and it
has provided a great inspiration for her watercolors. She has been greatly influenced by the beauty of Provence as well as the four seasons where she lives. Peter E. Brown – was a commercial illustrator for two years; a television art director for two years; holds a BA in art education from SIU Carbondale/ Edwardsville; was an art teacher for 24 years in the Mount Olive Schools. Peter follows his muse in a journey to rediscover his untrained primal spirit. His work combines brightly colored images and pulsing vibrant patterns. Peter’s work has been shown in Art East, the Metro East area, the Peori area, Virginia and Florida. He and his wife live in Gillespie, where they share a home and a studio. The artists featured in this story all have donated pieces for the auction. They are just a sampling of the many artists who have also made donations. Complete information about the auction, along with a Flash slide show of a number of other auction entries, is available at www.siuefriendsofart.com. For more information, e-mail dlynch@siue.edu or pdecote@siue. edu.

The Arts Artistic adventures "Legally Blonde" will return to Fox The first national tour of "Legally Blonde The Musical" returns to the Fabulous Fox Theatre April 8 through April 11 for a limited six-show engagement. Tickets are available at the Fox Theatre box office, all MetroTix outlets, online at www.metrotix.com or by phone at 314-534-1111. Orders for groups of 20 or more may be placed by calling 314-535-2900. “The Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation is thrilled to announce that this year’s 7th Annual Kids’ Night on Broadway will be in conjunction with the return engagement of "Legally Blonde The Musical", which particularly appeals to teens,” says Board President Mary Strauss. Sorority star Elle Woods doesn’t take “no” for an answer. So when her boyfriend dumps
her for someone more “serious,” Elle puts down the credit card, hits the books, and sets out to go where no Delta Nu has gone before: Harvard Law. Along the way, Elle proves that being true to yourself never goes out of style. In its first year on Broadway, "Legally Blonde The Musical" earned seven 2007 Tony Award nominations, ten 2007 Drama Desk Award Nominations, a 2007 Outer Critics Circle Award and the chorus of the musical was honored by Actors’ Equity Association’s Advisory Committee on Chorus Affairs (ACCA) with the first ever ACCA Award. The musical also ranked in the top ten list of the most requested Ticketmaster “Arts and Theatre Events” for 2007. "Legally Blonde The Musical" received three 2009 Touring Broadway Awards in New York City on May 4, 2009. The show won awards for Best New Musical, Best Production Design and Best
Choreography of a Touring Production. The Awards, presented by The Broadway League, honor excellence in Touring Broadway. It is the only such national award. The Original Broadway Cast Recording for "Legally Blonde The Musical" was released on Ghostlight Records, an imprint of Sh-KBoom Records, and captured the #1 slot on the Billboard Cast Album chart and charted at #86 on the Billboard Top 200. The album has continued its success, charting every week as one of the top-selling Broadway cast recordings and soared to the Top 10 albums (of any genre) on iTunes once the show premiered on MTV. As on Broadway, Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell is the director and choreographer. Music and lyrics are by both Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin, and the book is by Heather Hach. The production features scenic design
by David Rockwell, costume design by Gregg Barnes, lighting design by Kenneth Posner and Paul Miller, orchestrations by Christopher Jahnke and sound design by ACME Sound Partners. "Legally Blonde The Musical" is produced on tour by Hal Luftig, Fox Theatricals and Dori Berinstein, in association with MGM Onstage, Darcie Denkert and Dean Stolber. "Legally Blonde The Musical" will return to the Fabulous Fox Theatre April 8-11. Performances are Thursday and Friday, 8 p.m.; Saturday, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices range from $27-$68 and are subject to change. Please visit www.fabulousfox.com for current pricing information. Tickets are available at the Fox Theatre box office, all MetroTix outlets and online at www.metrotix.com or by phone at 314-534-1111.

QuickGlance Movie Reviews
“The Bounty Hunter”
In this rarely humorous, action-laden romantic-comedy by director Andy Tennant (“Hitch”), Gerard Butler, the buff, smirking Scottish star of “300” and “The Ugly Truth,” plays Milo Boyd, a former cop turned bounty hunter who gets the job of his life: the opportunity to drag his ex-wife (Jennifer Aniston) to jail. Aniston, somewhat incredibly, is a hardnosed crime reporter for the New York Daily News. While tenaciously pursuing a lead on a suspicious murder, Hurley misses a court appearance for a car accident, and the judge issues a warrant for her arrest. But neither actor is playing a character as much as they’re playing movie stars. You’re always fully aware that you’re watching Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler — and perhaps that’s the idea. For better and worse, “The Bounty Hunter” is merely an opportunity to sit in the dark with these two likable, attractive stars, rather than piece together distorted glimpses of them in the tabloids. RATED: PG-13 for sexual content including suggestive comments, language and some violence. RUNNING TIME: 110 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.
“City Island”
Set in the Bronx during an eventful spring break and populated by sexual, dark-haired people, “City Island” could, on the surface, be confused with a “Jersey Shore” sequel. The film’s namesake is the tiny fishing village on the outskirts of the New York borough. It’s a domestic farce where everyone in the Rizzo household harbors secrets, hiding their smoking — and many other habits — from each other. A prison guard (Andy Garcia) and his wife, Joyce (Julianna Margulies), are showing some wear from 20 years of marriage and creeping middle-age regrets. On the sly, he’s trying to become an actor. He’s also brought home a convict (Steven Strait), who (he hasn’t told anyone) is his son from an earlier marriage. The setup all begs a little too obviously for indie quirk — it even has the reliably superior Alan Arkin in a supporting role as if proof of “Little Miss Sunshine” ambitions. But the outerborough oddities of “City Island” are hard to resist. With Emily Mortimer. RATED: PG-13 for sexual content, smoking and language. RUNNING TIME: 100 minutes. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”
The film adaptation of Jeff Kinney’s wildly successful cartoon novel series manages to put flesh and bone on the books’ stick figures without altering the series’ mildly subversive comic tone. That fidelity plays mostly for the good, though the books’ moron-plagued, middle-school protagonist — sixth-grader Greg (Zachary Gordon), who, let’s be honest, comes off as kind of self-absorbed, lazy and petty — loses some of his appeal when viewed under the harsh light of the camera. What’s funny on the page is less sympathetic on the screen, meaning the wimpy kid who’s going to win the hearts and minds of most moviegoers is not the title character, but his best buddy, supernerd Rowley (Robert Capron). While Greg tries various “rackets” to win popularity, Rowley remains true to his own passions. He’s the hero, while Greg is kind of a wet blanket. RATED: PG for some rude humor and language. RUNNING TIME: 91 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
“Greenberg”
Ben Stiller breaks free from the shallow butthead roles on which he’s made his fortune and plays a painfully authentic butthead in this latest comic drama from Noah Baumbach (“The Squid and the Whale”). In the title role, Stiller plays a failed musician turned carpenter, fresh off a nervous breakdown and staying at his brother’s house while sibling and family are away. Greenberg’s a man whose excess of self-involvement, self-doubt and self-loathing often make him unpleasant to be around — so the fact that he’s still an engaging character is a testament to the fine line Stiller manages to walk. Stiller is paired to great effect with Greta Gerwig as his brother’s personal assistant, who has her own self-esteem issues and kind of falls for Greenberg despite his off-putting demeanor. For Gerwig, it could be a career-making role. For Stiller, it’s the finest work he’s done, a revelation that the star of “Meet the Parents” and “Night at the Museum” has more to offer than just broad comedy. With Jennifer Jason Leigh and Rhys Ifans. RATED: R for some strong sexuality, drug use and language. RUNNING TIME: 107 minutes.
ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
“Repo Men”
In this movie’s happy future, if you need a pancreas, you can get a pancreas. It’ll cost you $618,000 and, if you miss one of your “easy” payments, you’ll find yourself hounded by a hired goon who will slice you open, retrieve the organ and leave you bleeding to death. But at least you enjoyed a little extra time with your loved ones, right? With any luck, that time wouldn’t be spent watching empty-headed thrillers like “Repo Men,” a trashy movie that offers its slick dystopian vision as a pretense to lacerate a few dozen bodies in a fashion that makes “Nip/Tuck” look like “Marcus Welby, M.D.” The movie’s plot thickens after an on-the-job accident forces Jude Law’s repo man to have a literal change of heart about his career. The hunter becomes the hunted, and the movie trades its meager social satire for buckets of blood, but not improving a lick in the process. RATED: R for strong bloody violence, grisly images, language and some sexuality/nudity. RUNNING TIME: 111 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.
“The Runaways”
This chronicle of the rise and fall of Joan Jett’s first band easily could have degenerated into a movie-length music video, with Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning merely glamrock poseurs. Yet music-video veteran Floria Sigismondi crafts a brisk, engaging portrait, the story making up for its lack of insight into teen rebel Jett and her bandmates with driving, infectious rhythm. For Stewart as Jett and Fanning as Runaways singer Cherie Currie, the movie is a smart showcase to help them break out of their molds as they take on more adult roles. While an entertaining evocation of the ’70s scene, the movie plays out predictably like many another tale of a promising band undone by those pesky “creative differences.” Stewart and Fanning handle their characters and vocals admirably, their live performances blending seamlessly with actual Runaways recordings on the soundtrack. Whatever else you might say about the movie, it’s one that definitely loves rock ’n’ roll. RATED: R for language, drug use and sexual content — all involving teens. RUNNING TIME: 102 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

Stewart, Fanning glam it up By DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press "The Runaways,” chronicling the rise and fall of Joan Jett’s first band, easily could have degenerated into a movie-length music video, with Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning merely glam-rock poseurs. Yet music-video veteran Floria Sigismondi makes an impressive feature-film directing debut, crafting a brisk, engaging portrait, the story making up for its lack of insight into teen rebel Jett and her bandmates with driving, infectious rhythm. For Stewart as Jett and Fanning as Runaways singer Cherie Currie, the movie is a smart showcase to help them break out of their molds as they take on more adult roles, Stewart aiming for life after “Twilight” and Fanning seeking to graduate from her position as Hollywood’s doeeyed princess of child stars. Both have done other mature roles — Stewart was a stripper and hooker in the upcoming “Welcome to the Rileys,” Fanning played a teen rape victim in “Hounddog.” Yet “The Runaways” will be an eyeopener for their fans, with Stewart and Fanning hurling themselves into the roles, their descent into the seedy 1970s world of sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll including a passionate kiss they share in a love scene. Though based on Currie’s memoir “Neon Angel,” “The Runaways” is much more the story of Jett, who was an executive producer on the film and on set for almost the entire shoot. Currie was on hand to help the filmmakers, as well, but the movie, like the short-lived Runaways, is of greatest interest as a prelude to Jett’s later stardom fronting the Blackhearts. Sigismondi, who also wrote the

Their band included guitarist Lita Ford, later a hard-rock star on her own. From their start in 1975 through their finish in 1978, the Runaways made five albums, toured relentlessly in the United States, Europe and Japan, and achieved superstardom
in the latter, where their anthem “Cherry Bomb” was a smash hit. While an entertaining evocation of the ’70s scene, “The Runaways” plays out predictably like many another tale of a promising band undone by those pesky “creative differences.” Stewart’s Jett is the backbone, the one who really wants it, the one born for the life of a rock star. The movie’s high point comes after a period of lonely introspection by Jett as she realizes her dream of the Runaways is fading, and the movie gives way
to the sizzling guitar intro of “I Love Rock N’ Roll,” a hit a few years later for her and the Blackhearts. Fanning has the showy role as Currie, strutting the stage in lingerie and acting out with a drugged-up punk’s lust for bad behavior. The character rings a bit hollowly, though, the perspective coming mainly through Jett’s eyes, with little to say about how and why Currie was so quickly seduced and spat out by the rock life. Stewart is the steady hand, her
Jett certainly more impassioned than mopey Bella in the “Twilight” movies but muted next to the outrageous antics Fanning gets to carry out. As manager Fowley, Shannon is funny and often more outlandish than Fanning’s Currie, though in his case, the character can lapse into a caricature of a crazy man behind the scenes. Some touching moments develop in Currie’s relations with her twin sister (Riley Keough, a strong presence as the bitter sibling stuck at home in a dead-end job).
Jennifer Aniston needs a break By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge Sigh. That’s how I feel. One of the things that I used to love isn’t as great as it used to be. Or at least that’s the impression that romantic comedies are giving me in 2010. There have been four major releases in this usually dependable genre so far this year. I’ve written at length about two of the lesser transgressors (Leap Year and When in Rome) which were an exercise in banality, if nothing else. Another, Valentine’s Day, was as bloated in scope as it’s ridiculous namesake has become in recent years. More than a dozen above-the-title stars were mashed together into an incoherent and unsatisfying mess that, for some inexplicable reason, led to major box office revenues. My biggest beef, however, is with the most recent violator of my trust “The Bounty Hunter.” For ten seasons, Jennifer Aniston both intrigued and infuriated fans of “Friends” for her role as fickle, scatter-brained Rachel Green. I was among the infuriated, never

wanting the nebbish Ross Gellar to end up with an equally whiny mate. What an unbearable couple they would have been, even if they were TV-destined for one another. For the years since, Aniston has been using the same shtick in feature films that she used to drive me crazy with on television. She’s a self-supporting character with initiative and an independent streak, but she is pretty darn flaky at times, too. Through a dozen films this over-riding trend has been notable and it continues in this week’s newest struggle.
I don’t want to keep picking on her, but script choice has got to be a reason things keep turning out like this for good ol’ Jen. For every smart or pleasing move (“Office Space,” “Marley & Me”) she does herself a disservice with substandard rom-com crappola like “He’s Just Not That Into You” or “Rumor Has It.“ While she shined in the indie hit “The Good Girl,” she was horribly miscast in the con-woman thriller Derailed. Methinks someone either needs a new agent or a long break from the silver screen grind. In “The Bounty Hunter,” Aniston stars as Nicole Hurley, a newspaper reporter who books it out of town when the current story she’s working on starts to gain her some unfavorable notoriety among a group of cops on the take. Smart as that road trip might be, it also causes her to jump bail (on a trumped up assaulting an officer charge) and become a wanted fugitive. This setup is perfect for our “meet cute” because Nicole’s ex-husband is Milo Boyd (Gerard Butler), a slovenly former cop, now a sloppy bail
bondsman itching to collect the fee for bringing the kicking and screaming Nicole back to jail. The farce is really dragged out, finding opportunities for the couple to re-enact their honeymoon (complete with a bizarre side trip to a B&B run by Carol Kane), impersonate a Senator, hit the craps tables, and visit a strip club. A plus, if I had to pick one, would be Jason Sudeikis as Nicole’s infatuated colleague. Determined, completely goofy, and wearing a horrible fake mustache, his character, Stewart, provides some of the much needed comic relief that the two leads fail to give us. About the time they started getting shot at, though, by thugs played by Peter Greene and Joel Garland, I lost interest. It was clear that this movie, for Butler and Aniston, was about two things: a paycheck and reminding audiences that they both still looking amazing without their shirts on (him we see, her we don’t, but can surmise based on her one skimpy outfit). The Bounty Hunter was no prize pig. I say stay away.

If you dig archaeology Bus trip will cover historic sites in southern Illinois By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge It is really amazing what a single item can tell you about history. There have been many items discovered in archaeological digs that have changed our way of thinking and understanding of how we thought people who came before us lived. Scientists can usually study an item and tell approximately how old it is, what material it was made from, the tools used to make it and even what it was used for. That is really fascinating when all of that information can come from just a single item. Even in southern Illinois, there are a number of archaeological digs and findings that tell much about the history of the people that dwelled in this area. Whether it be dishes or porcelain doll pieces that were discarded down an outhouse hole or prehistoric bones that tell us what else may have roamed these regions, there is a great opportunity to visit some of the local archaeological sites. Archaeology fans can hit the road during an all-day bus tour on Sunday, April 11, of prehistoric
and historic archaeological sites in southwestern Illinois. The trip, sponsored by the Cahokia Archaeological Society, leaves the Cahokia Mounds Interpretive Center parking lot at 8 a.m. sharp and will return by 4 p.m. The tour will begin with several sites in the Metro East area then proceed south past Chester before returning. Dr. John Kelly of Washington University in St. Louis, an archaeologist who has worked in the region for four decades, will explain the importance of each site, the time period to which it belongs, and what excavations or research have taken place. The tour will stop at several sites and drive by others. Some of the sites to which visits are planned include: the Sam Chucalo Mound, East St. Louis Cemetery Mound, Lohmann Site, Cahokia Courthouse, Jarrot Mansion, Holy Family Church, Martin-Boismenue House, Dupo Sugarloaf Mound, Pulcher Mounds, Washausen Site, Creole House, Modoc Rock Shelter, Jacob Road Mound, Twenhafel Site, Pierre Menard Home, Fort Kaskaskia, and Falling Springs. The route and sites
are subject to change depending on weather, accessibility, and time. This trip is not age restricted, but it is suggested that young children not participate due to the long bus trip and extensive stops and lectures. Dress appropriately for the weather, wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes. You may bring a small back pack or bag, and camera.
Only water or clear liquids are allowed on the bus (ie. bottled water, Sprite). No coffee is allowed on the bus. Snacks and other drinks are permissible, but must be kept closed and put away on the bus and saved for the stops. There will be a cooler on the bus if needed. There will be a lunch break stop in Chester. The cost is $30 per person (non-
refundable), which includes a sandwich lunch. For reservations, call 345-6454 and provide your name, phone number and sandwich choice (Turkey and Ham; Classic Cold Cuts; Italian; Tuna Salad; Vegetarian). Checks should be made payable to “CAS” and mailed to CAS Bus Trip, 414 N. Morrison Ave, Collinsville, IL 62234.

Travel Travel briefs Deals at Arizona hotels, resorts drawing visitors PHOENIX (AP) — After nearly a year and half of double-digit declines in occupancy rates at Phoenix-area hotels and resorts, freebies and good deals appear to be drawing more visitors, according to The Arizona Republic. Rates have been on the rise in metro Phoenix so far this year, according to Smith Travel Research, an independent lodging industry research company. Hoteliers are competing to lure spring training fans, sunbathers and golfers in a still-sluggish economy, and value is key. “With the economy the last 18 months, the traveler is smarter. They’re looking for the bigger bang for their buck,” Kristen Freeman, general manager of north Scottsdale’s Homewood Suites, told the paper. Her hotel created a new spring-training package that includes sports souvenirs and free shuttle service to the spring-training home of the San Francisco Giants in Scottsdale. She said the special has boosted occupancy by 20 to 25 percent over last year. Some March dates are sold out, and guests are staying longer. Valeriano Antonioli, managing director of the InterContinental Montelucia Resort & Spa in Paradise Valley, was quoted as saying that
40 percent of the vacation business on its books for March is from the resort’s spring-training offer launched in January. Their deal includes a nightly $100 credit to spend at the resort and a room upgrade for stays of three or more nights. The room rate in the package starts at $329.
Rosebud officials did not immediately return a call for comment on the deal. The Windber museum had been owned by The Progress Fund, a nonprofit that helps fund tourist and historical sites. The museum opened in 1998 but had cut back its hours due to funding cuts from the state and other sources and planned
to close until Rosebud stepped in, Kahley said. “Five years ago the museum was open 40 hours a week, nearly every week. Funding cuts had kept it open only weekends during the summer months” for the last three years, Kahley said. “If you have a museum and you barely open the doors, what advantage is that?”
Rosebud learned of The Progress Fund’s plans to close the museum through some contacts in the coal mining industry and, instead, bought the museum to keep it open. “Rosebud, with its commitment to the industry, is in a far better place to tell the coal story than we ever were,” Kahley said.
Mine firm buys museum with Quecreek history WINDBER, Pa. (AP) — A coal mining company is buying a small museum where artifacts are displayed from the 2002 rescue of nine western Pennsylvania miners who were trapped underground for more than 78 hours. The Rosebud Mining Co. is paying $250,000 for the Windber Coal Heritage Center, about 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, and will set up its own nonprofit to take control of the exhibits, said David Kahley, president and chief executive of The Progress Fund, which was selling the museum Monday. Rosebud, based in Kittanning, is not affiliated with any of the mining companies involved in the rescue of Quecreek miners who were trapped underground in Somerset County from July 24-27, 2002. The miners were trapped by water that rushed into their mine after they dug into an adjacent, abandoned mine that was flooded.

Giving gifts from the heart By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Looking for the right gift for someone can be a daunting task. Searching from store to store, picking things up, putting them back, trying to stay in a budget but still getting something that says what you want it to say. Not an easy task. There are a number of places that offer bath and body items for gift giving. However, few can make the claim that they are not only making an earth-friendly product, but their products are made by mentally and physically challenged adults. The special friends at Disabilities Resources, Inc., in Abilene, Texas, where “Herban Renewal” is based have been happily employed by the company for over a decade. Their product description says “made in West Texas. . . steeped in love, opportunity and possibility.” Herban Renewal has four unique lines of products: Herban Renewal – the flagship line that offers a range of luxurious and sophisticated bath items for women, including sumptuous soaps, lotions, salts and dusts. Arcelia – is the company’s other ladies line that’s earth-friendly and has a younger, chic and trendy sensibility. Livi.Lu.Lu – a youth line that is cost competitive skin nourishing products for adolescent “tween”
girlie girls. Sweet Cheeks – A line of pampering products for babies. The company was launched in 1996 with the goal to create a distinctive line of earth-friendly personal care products utilizing allnatural, top-quality ingredients right from the garden. They blended the freshest, most fragrant herbs and botanicals, the most healing and moisturizing vegetable oils and the purest sea salts and combined them in unique proprietary formulations to bring customers the best Mother Nature has to offer in bath and body products. Not only does the company maintain a foundation based on being socially conscious by employing those who may not be able to be employed in the mainstream workforce, but they give back in a huge way. Love and Care Ministries, a homeless outreach in Abilene, Texas, benefits from Herban Renewal’s lotions, washes and soaps, as does The Noah Project, a battered women’s shelter. Also, a portion of each lavender bath salt sold is given to Cancer Services Network. And, of course, Disability Resources reaps many rewards from the company. Not only can you enjoy any of the products from the four lines offered, but they also have “Twinkle Toes,” an all-natural, all-pink, all-glittery powder to sprinkle in ballet slippers, dance slippers, dance bags or all over before slipping into a tu-tu, shu-shu, or any other fabulous ensemble. It is talc-free and the scent is called “pirouette peppermint.” Or maybe just the right product to help with the night time anxieties “Shoo! Monster Dusts” (antiboogeyman). No more bedtime tears or fears. Sprinkle “Shoo! Monster Dust” around beds, under beds and in closets to SCARE those monsters and things that go bump in the night away! It’s 100 percent all natural. “Fish’n” and “Hunt’n” Lather – For men to scour away the day’s fishing and hunting expedition with this 100 percent natural soap
with a hefty lather. A touch of anise oil disguises that not-so-pleasant human scent. Not only can you get some wonderful products, but some are available in gift sets. The Livi.Lu.Lu line especially offers a cute way to gift give with a gift set attached to an adorable “Angel Kitty” or “Strawberry Kitty” stuffed animal. The final fabulous thing about Herban Renewal is the reasonable prices on all of their items. Any one can fit these gifts in their gift-giving budget. Herban Renewal’s products are available online, along with more information about each individual product at www.herbn-renewal.com. You can sign up at their site for promotions and updates. So remember the next time you are having a hard time finding a gift for someone, maybe give one that really comes from the heart.

Family Focus Denim – yesterday, today and tomorrow By SAMANTHA CRITCHELL AP Fashion Writer NEW YORK (AP) — Denim never goes out of style, but there are seasons when your old, reliable fivepocket jeans simply aren’t enough. This is one of those seasons. The jeans legging — aka jegging — is still going strong, and denim designers are also talking up the chambray shirt, asymmetrical motocross jackets, cutoff shorts and, still, the boyfriend pant. There are trouser styles and waistcoats for work, and, “rip-and-repair” jeans are a must for weekends. Ralph Lauren had overalls on the runway and showed jeans under an evening gown. Even babies are getting premium denim. And a denim-on-denim outfit, sometimes considered a fashion faux-pas in the past, is a bona fide trend. “The American denim look is
everywhere — it’s in the air, it’s all over the world,” says Patrick Robinson, creative director at Gap. “The workwear feel is hot, especially for guys, and there’s a sexy look for women. ... It’s about cool Americans and how they live and we’re trying to export that around the world.” Denim is proving a strong springtime seller in stores, says Stephanie Solomon, vice president of fashion direction at Bloomingdale’s. She is particularly fond of the shorts and leggings paired with striped Tshirts. “It probably has never had a larger impact on what we wear every day,” agrees Durand Guion, men’s fashion director for Macy’s. “We had gotten just about as casual as we can get without getting in our pajamas, so we’re looking to incorporate denim into our lives at least five days a week, but not just Saturdays. We’re looking to step it up. You can wear a button-down denim shirt with a
tie.” Helmut Lang co-creative director Nicole Colovos thinks people like that they can put their own spin on denim. And no pair of jeans looks the same on two different people. “It’s so individual, from how you wear it in, how you style it. The fit is molded to your shape,” Colovos says. “You don’t want someone else wearing your jeans.” Finding the best fit is trial and error, she adds, but once consumers find a denim label they like, they tend to be loyal. Denim leggings aren’t saggy and baggy, and that flattering, lasting shape is part of their appeal, says You Nguyen, Levi’s senior vice president of women’s merchandising and design. He says he can’t overemphasize the importance of the legging right now. It further evolves the skinny jean, which has moved from trendy to staple status, and it complements
Lenny’s CARPET
the tunic top and the slouchy blazer that are being touted for spring. “Our leggings business is on fire, at all price points and at all retailers,” Nguyen says. On the flip side, the boyfriend skinny jean — with a looser waist and hip but a narrower leg — remains popular. “I don’t believe that denim has ever really left the fashion ‘trend,’ but what we’re seeing now is that for a few seasons, denim was influencing sportswear, making sportswear more casual. Now sportswear is influencing denim,” Nguyen says. Look for lighter shades of denim as the weather warms, and a lot of

distressed finishes, too, sometimes with purposeful patches. G-Star collection stylist Remco De Nijs’ favorite denim fabric right now is the traditional Japanese selvage out of the brand’s new Raw Essentials collection. He says the fabric has a very authentic denim hand, which juxtaposes nicely with modern silhouettes, such as the company’s signature Arc Pant, which has a low-slung top and exaggerated tapered leg. (Selvage denim, De Nijs explains, stands for the tape on the edges of the denim looms. Traditionally every brand had its own edge. That is how the manufacturer recognized the brand.)

Candy Coated Evil By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Members: Lexy Schlemer-Elmore-Guitar/Lead Vocals Sydney Schlemer-Bass/Lead Vocals Phil Schlemer-Drums/Lead Vocals Candy Coated Evil of Edwardsvilleis a trio that is a family band but are not the “typical” family band. Syd and Lexy come by music honestly. Their Grandfather was Walt Schlemer, the upright bass player and band leader for the “Walt Schlemer Orchestra” which was very famous in Edwardsville. Their father, Phil, followed in their grandfather ’s footsteps and started his band the Phil Schlemer Band as the drummer and lead singer. Syd and Lexy played with a few different drummers through their teens, but finally settled on asking their dad to be in the band with them. They play music from the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s, to now as well as originals. Syd’s main influence is Alice Cooper, The Misfits and rockabilly. Lexy’s main influences are Bon Jovi and Buckcherry and Phil’s are Allman Brothers and Eric Clapton. They try to be as versatile as they can be. They want to play a little something for everyone in the crowd. Syd also breaks out Grandpa Walt’s upright bass at their shows as well. They have tons of fun and want everyone else to feel that.

The Saint Louis Stompers – a toe-tapping good time By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Becoming one of the most popular events offered at the Sheldon Concert Hall is the Coffee Concert series. Not only do patrons get to enjoy some fantastic musical performances, but they get to have a bite of pastry and a good cup of coffee before the toe tapping event. The next Coffee Concert selection is the Saint Louis Stompers, a local and festival j a z z f a v o r i t e , w h o p l a y a m i x t u re o f Chicago and New Orleans style traditional jazz and Dixieland, reminiscent of Bix, Jelly Roll and King Oliver. The Saint Louis Stompers will make two morning appearances on Tuesday, April 6, and Wednesday, April 7, at 10 a.m., each day in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. Tickets include complimentary pastries and coffee at 9 a.m., followed by the one-hour concert. Playing together since 1981 and the years of experience between them, the Stompers talented musicians have performed with groups such as the Gateway City Big Band, Jean Kittrell’s Old Saint Louis Levee Band, Sammy Kaye Orchestra, and the Saint Louis Riverman. This popular ensemble consists of members Pat Arana, trombone; Mike Lilley, clarinet; Steve Lilley, cornet; Dave Majchrzak, piano; Dave Zink, sousaphone; and Jack Tartar, drums and ukulele. A little bio on each member: Pat Arana - Trombone:Pat is a veteran jazz player. He has probably played with every jazz group in the St. Louis area and was a charter member of Jean Kittrell and Red Lehr ’s Old Saint Louis Levee Band which played for fourteen years on the famous Lt. Robert E. Lee showboat. Pat has performed throughout the US

and Europe. A retired band teacher, Pat’s trombone playing soars and growls the full range of the instrument. He remains one of the busiest musicians in St. Louis. Jack Tartar - Drums and Ukelele: The only charter member of the Stompers, Jack is one of the finest drummers anywhere in the country. Jack perfected his drumming s k ills during a stint in the Navy and effortlessly shifts from one playing style to another. One of the most sought after drummers in the St. Louis area, Jack has played with Steve Allen, backed the Ink Spots and Four Aces, toured with the Sammy Kaye Orchestra throughout the U.S., including Hawaii, and has toured with Jean Kittrell. An avid outdoorsman, J a c k s p e n d s m u c h o f h i s l e i s u re t i m e camping, canoeing, and watching wildlife. He also serves as Band Morale Officer and Philosopher in Residence. Dave Majchrzak - Piano: Dave plays a d r i v i n g , c ro w d - p l e a s i n g t r a d i t i o n a l jazz piano. He has led his own bands since his high school days and plays contemporary, rock and swing as easily as he plays Dixie. For years, Dave worked with the Bob Kuban organization. He has also played solo Ragtime gigs at venues such as the Ragfest on the Goldenrod Showboat and at Silver Dollar City, the Chippewa Valley, Blind Boone, A l e x B a y, a n d S c o t t J o p l i n R a g t i m e Festivals. Dave has served as artist in residence for the Scott Joplin festival, as director of the Scott Joplin International Ragtime Festival, the Chippewa Valley Ragtime Festival, and as president of St. Louis’ Friends of Scott Joplin Society. A veterinarian by day, Dave also composes ragtime music and acts as the band’s arranger. Steve Lilley - Cornet: Steve joined the Stompers in 1994 and now leads the
band. Over the years, he played with a number of jazz groups. In fact, a group he led may have had the longest name of any trad group in the St. Louis area: The Chamber Music Society of Greater Lincoln County (picture that on a name tag). Since then, he has performed with numerous jazz bands including ten years with Jean Kittrell. He continues to play with the Saint Louis Rivermen, Red Lehr ’s P o w e rh o u s e F i v e , a n d t h e O l d S a i n t Louis Levee Band. A retired high school teacher, he also has written three history books and several magazine articles. In February 2009, Highlights for Children, America’s premier children’s magazine, published his story “Louis and the King,” an account of Joe Oliver ’s mentoring young Louis Armstrong. Mike Lilley - Clarinet: Mike is leader S t e v e L i l l e y ’ s i d e n t i c a l t w i n b ro t h e r. During his 20-year career in the Air Force, M i k e s e r v e d a s Ti t a n m i s s i l e l a u n c h officer and information officer. Retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, he now divides his time among his family, his bird dog, and his clarinet. In his youth, he played the rural dance halls where large men were thrown around the room toward midnight. He finds the Stompers’ jobs much tamer. the older and more settled patrons only throw small men aound and always long before midnight. Dave Zink - Sousaphone: Born to parents who love Dixieland Jazz, David grew up listening to recordings of Sammy Gardner and Muggsy’s Sprecher ’s Gaslighters. These greats from St. Louis’ legendary Gaslight Square inspired David to immerse himself in traditional jazz. In the fifth grade, he joined the school band playing trombone, an instrument he continues to play with the Jacksonville. Symphony Orchestra. When David and
some of his high school buddies organized their own Dixieland band, he took up the sousaphone. His traditional sousaphone playing led to a musical association with festival favorite David “Red” Lehr and the irrepressible Jean Kittrell who encouraged David’s jazz ambitions. Over the years, David has played with some of the top trad bands in the Midwest and now lays down the bass line for the Saint Louis Stompers Classic Jazz Band. By day David owns and operates an auto repair shop, restores and drives classic cars, and plays traditional jazz every chance he gets...which is more all the time! The Stompers have performed at numerous venues throughout Missouri and Illinois. Some of their performances i n c l u d e t h e G re a t R i v e r J a z z S o c i e t y of Hannibal, the St. Louis Jazz Club, Gateway Jazz Festival, the National Ragtime Festival on the Goldenrod Showboat, and the Bix Beiderbecke Jazz Festival. Music Tuning in Arianna String Quartet returns The Arianna String Quartet (ASQ), St. Louis’ own chamber ensemble, will conclude its 2009-2010 season with Triple Crown on Friday, April 9. The concert includes guest pianist Chiharu Iinuma and begins at 8 p.m. in the E. Desmond & Mary Ann Lee Theater. Triple Crown is a nod to the crowning achievements by three of classical music’s greatest composers, Mozart, Bartok and Schumann.  Mozart’s beguiling Quartet K.428 earned praise from Haydn who dubbed him “the greatest composer known to me.â€? Bartok’s 4th Quartet shows him at the zenith of his powers and is a true lion of the repertoire.  The concert closes with guest pianist Chiharu Iinuma joining the quartet on Schumann’s magnificent chamber work Piano Quintet.  Formed in 1992, the ASQ is the quartet-in-residence at the Touhill and has been hailed as one of the cultural gems of the St. Louis region by Sarah Bryan Miller of the St. Louis PostDispatch.  The quartet – violinist John McGrosso and David Gillham, violist Joanna Mendoza and cellist Kurt Baldwin – has performed throughout the United States, Mexico, Japan, Canada and France to rave reviews. This touring has given them greater exposure, leading to recordings with classic labels. Last summer, the Arianna String Quartet signed an exclusive, long-term recording contract with Centaur Records, North America’s oldest independent classical music label.Â
To further enhance the patron’s live experience at the ASQ’s Triple Crown concert, the Touhill is offering the E3! program, Explore – Experience – Engage, in association with this performance. E3! pre-show discussions, which begin 50 minutes prior to the performance, and post-show receptions are free to ticket holders.  Tickets for ASQ: Triple Crown are $20. They are available now at the Touhill Performing Arts Center Ticket Office; online at www.touhill.org; or by phone at 314.516.4949; and toll-free at 866.516.4949. The Touhill’s Ticket Office is located at One University Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63121. All St. Louis area students receive a 10% discount on two tickets with their I.D. While the pairing of choir and guitars might not seem a natural one, this program will certainly demonstrate the versatility of the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus. In a partnership ideal for a season titled “Collaborations II,â€? the Chorus will be joined by the celebrated Hanser McClellan guitar duo, which has been thrilling audiences across the country since 1996.       Though unusual, the mix of guitars and choir has interested a number of great composers. Works by Heitor Villa-Lobos and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco form the heart of this program. Villa-Lobos’ “Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5â€? is one of the most haunting and recognized works by Brazil’s best known composer. It will be performed to an arrangement by Bob Chilcott, formerly of the King’s Singers. Castelnuovo-Tedesco, whose fame seems inextricably connected to the guitar, marries his music to the poetry of Spain’s Federico Garcia Lorca in a cycle of Spanish songs, “Romancero Gitano.â€? In the music and words, the audience will feel the passion of Spain, its people and customs. Additionally the Chamber Chorus will perform songs in praise of stringed instruments by Zoltan Kodaly and Sasha Johnson Manning, lute songs full of wit by John Dowland and, from Franz Schubert, Romantic lieder for guitar and men’s voices.  Join the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus with “Strings Attached?,â€? at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 11 at Grace United Methodist Church. Parking is free. For more information about the concert, and tickets, call 636-458-4343.Â

Tony Willenborg of Joe's Pizza and Pasta
Joe's Pizza and Pasta – minus Joe By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge When you walk into Joe’s Pizza and Pasta at 4 Club Centre Court, Suite K, in Edwardsville, don’t look for Joe because you won’t find him. Instead, you’ll find Tony Willenborg, a focused and friendly 26 year old entrepreneur with a lot of patience and determination. Joe Trupiano actually originated Joe’s Pizza and Pasta 40 years ago in Olney. Joe’s sons Manny and Joey carried on their father ’s namesake by opening a Joe’s in Effingham where Willenborg began working at the age of 16. Willenborg spent his high school years working at Joe’s, but eventually graduated and attended college at SIU-Carbondale. Willenborg would return to work at Joe’s over the summers and even helped to open a new Joe’s in Altamont a few years ago. “Joe’s was always something I had in the back in my mind,” Willenborg said about owning his own restaurant. But the timing had never been quite right. He had signed a commitment to the National Guard that he needed to fulfill. This commitment actually took him to Iraq for a year beginning in May of 2005. The other years of his service he was obligated to weekend and summer National Guard duties. Opening a business while fulfilling his commitment to the National Guard was out of the question, but as they say, good things come to those who wait. “Whenever I was approached with the idea, it sounded really good and my obligation with the military was coming to an end so everything worked out really well,” Willenborg said. He opened Joe’s Pizza and Pasta in Edwardsville on Feb. 2. “I thought that Joe’s would do great here,”

Willenborg said. “And I just decided it was time to do it.” Although Willenborg is a first-time restaurant owner, he has the support of the Joe’s Pizza and Pasta family and Willenborg is completely committed to his new business venture. He can be found every day behind the counter at Joe’s, and when he’s not assisting with food preparation, he’s out at the tables talking to customers. Willenborg said that building a relationship with customers was critically important to him. He estimated that at least 30 percent of their customers were “regulars” already. “I see the same customers over and over,” he said. “I like to go out and say hey, here’s some cheesecake to try, or I’ll sit down with them and get to know them.” Providing great service is also a goal. “Service is one of the most important things we stress,” Willenborg said. “We want to make sure that everyone who comes through the door is happy.” As the name suggests, Joe’s has pizza, but it’s more than a pizza place. A full Italian menu offers appetizers, salads, pastas, sub sandwiches and desserts. Willenborg said that their most popular appetizer is the cheese stuffed breadsticks or regular breadsticks. “We serve it with a cheese and pizza combo sauce. It’s a great combo,” he said. “Everybody loves it. The cheese goes great with our sauce.” There are also wings, fried mozzarella and fried ravioli. Antipasta, Greek and Italian salads have been big sellers so far among the eight different salad options. And pasta? “Lasagna is finally starting to pick up and so is our cheese tortellini,” he said. He also noted that the alfredo is quite popular and “really good.” Other pasta dishes include spaghetti,
mostaccioli, fettuccini, ravioli, tortellini, manicotti, stuffed shells, baked mostaccioli, chicken parmesan, eggplant parmesan and Trupiano carbonara. There are also several alfredo specialties including fettuccini alfredo, grilled chicken alfredo, shrimp alfredo, cheese tortellini alfredo and lobster ravioli alfredo. Many of the pasta dinners come in full and half size portions and range in price from $6.95 for a half size portion of mostaccioli to $11.95 for a full size Trupiano carbonara. There are 10 sandwiches to choose from ranging in price from $6.25 to $7.50. Willenborg pointed out that the Italian and club subs were rather popular and the Italian beef was gaining in popularity too. All sandwiches include a serving of chips. It wouldn’t be Joe’s without mentioning the pizza. “Our Chicago style pizza is a huge hit here,” Willenborg said. The Chicago style consists of a thick crust that is formed up on the sides to hold in the toppings. Joe’s also offers a stuffed crust and thick crust as additional pizza options and a wide variety of toppings. Customers are welcome to call 655-9400 or 655-9401 to place an order for pickup or have an order delivered. There’s no minimum order for delivery. If you prefer to eat at Joe’s, there are a few tables with seating or a few stools at the counter. Although seating is somewhat limited inside, patio seating is currently in the works and should be available by the end of March. Joe’s also offers catering and has received positive feedback from catering customers thus far. Willenborg said that Joe’s pricing was quite reasonable and that a typical pasta, salad and bread would average less than $5 a person to cater.
While the restaurant is tucked in the end of the strip mall off of Route 157 where Neruda is also located, customers seem to have found it just fine without much promoting. “We haven’t done any advertising, except minimal, and it’s spreading faster than we can catch up,” Willenborg said. The restaurant's nearly 2,600 Facebook fans can attest to the popularity of the food. A recent wall post asked the fans to leave a post about their favorite Joe’s menu item. A multitude of comments came back that covered the gamut of the menu. Nancy posted, “Chicken Alfredo pizza, add bacon! YUM” while Ed commented, “Baked spaghetti and lasagna. Oh and Italian salad too. It’s all freaking great.” Samantha posted about her favorite saying, “The baked mastaccioli and the bread sticks with cheesy pizza sauce. . . yum yum.” Perhaps Jodi summed up the wall posts best saying, “Everything!!! Seriously – salads, sandwiches, pizza, pasta – they’re ALL terrific!” Now that Willenborg has a solid month as a business owner under his belt, what exactly has he learned? “Definitely that building relationships is key,” he said. “I get a chance to talk to a customer that comes in here three, four times already and I know their face. It’s nice to sit down and talk to them. And just having fun at work. We get our job done and we joke around and goof off, but we’re really like a big family here at Joe’s. Definitely building relationships and making sure people are happy. If they aren’t happy, I take care of them and make sure they come back and that they are happy the next time.” Joe’s Pizza and Pasta is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday.

Dining Delights Live octopus? Goat kidneys? It's what's for dinner NEW YORK (AP) — Ben Raisher watches as the writhing Octopus on his plate has its tentacles clipped with giant shears, then squirms in amber sesame oil like a pile of bisected earthworms. Wi t h a d e f t p i n c h o f h i s chopsticks, the wriggling, stillalive limb is in his mouth and down his throat. Raisher, 28, smiles. It’s what brought him to his local food adventure club, one of a handful of groups dedicated to dining on exotic and bizarre foods from New York to Denver to San Francisco. The iron-stomached champions o f N e w Yo r k C i t y a r e t h e Gastronauts, who meet monthly to feast on foods many wouldn’t consider, such as pig hearts and intestine in vinegar, goat kidneys or sauteed lamb’s brains. “Nothing’s off the table,” said cofounder Curtiss Calleo, who grew up in Austria and Italy and wants to bring Old World curiosity to New York plates. “Any restaurant worth its salt has sweetbreads or tongue or pork bellies. There’s a food renaissance going on.” Offal is old hat for groups like the Boston Gastronauts and the Organ Meet Society of New York City. There are groups devoted to eating only insects and some that venture into extreme territory, like the San Francisco Food Adventure Club that recently organized a human placenta tasting (the dinner had to be canceled due to potential formaldehyde exposure). Most of the adventures are in good fun, but some have pushed boundaries. Last week, federal prosecutors filed charges against a restaurant and sushi chef accused of serving endangered whale meat in Santa Monica, Calif. The Gastronauts have more than 300 people on their mailing list, and nearly 50 attended the March meeting at a Korean restaurant in Queens, where gastro-warriors tried live octopus along with lobster sashimi, freshly vivisected, then displayed on the plate on a bed of lettuce in front of its meaty core. The head appears to watch the body get eaten as its antennae and claws twitch. Delicious? Perhaps not. But that’s hardly the point. “Boring food bores the crap out of me,” Raisher, 28, said between bites. For Jenna Volcheff, a pastry chef who has been attending Gastronauts meetings since November, it’s a chance to taste f o o d f ro m d i ff e re n t c u l t u re s “instead of going to a different country, which I can’t do on a monthly basis, or often a yearly basis.” That wanderlust is one of the reasons adventure eating has gained popularity over the past few years, said Epicurious.com E d i t o r Ta n y a We n m a n S t e e l .

“As a chef, sometimes opportunities land in you lap,” he said. “You get assorted pig parts or the random case of tongues. In these types of times, this is a responsible way to eat.” Recently, he’s enlisted the local restaurant community. The group’s next meal at Opus restaurant will include frog curry, pork brain lettuce wraps and balut — a fertilized duck egg, poached or deep-fried, that contains a partially formed embryo. One attendee, upon reading the menu, sent a message to Emanuel: “You had me at embryo.” While some may find the eating of brains and embryos unsavory, Emanuel said the point of adventurous eating for many is to try something new, not to get involved in the ethics of eating. “It’s not for me to judge whether or not it’s right or wrong,” he said. “How else are you going to be exposed to these bits and pieces of culture?” One ingredient that both Krader and Steel agree could be the next big culinary delight is insects. Within the next decade, insect eating could be as common as sushi is today. “Insect eating in general has gone from being perceived as an extreme sport to an inexpensive
“Americans are venturing around the world in increasingly far-flung places,” she said, trying new foods at their source. Machismo-laced TV shows s u c h a s t h e Tr a v e l C h a n n e l ’ s “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations” and Andrew Zimmern’s “Bizarre Foods” also push the boundaries. “Eating as a bloodsport has become this kind of macho quest to see who can eat the most bizarre and disgusting foods,” Steel said. People have been playing with their food — and the gross-out factor — at long-standing festivals l i k e t h e Wa u r i k a R a t t l e s n a k e Hunt in Oklahoma, the Road Kill Cookoff in West Virginia. Still, while many are trying bizarre foods just to push the envelope, others are searching for authentic eats instead of boring snacks, said Kate Krader, restaurant editor for Food and Wine magazine. “Non-challenging foods are being eaten by the truckload,” Krader said. “We’re coming out of a time of very boring food in America.” In Denver, adventurous eaters might get whatever ’s left in the kitchen of Jon Emanuel, 42, founder of the Denver Adventurous Eating Club.
snack,” Steel said. If insects will soon find their place next to the green beans, it’s only fair they should have their own eating club too. The Brooklyn Bug Biters, founded by Brooklyn-based artist Marc Dennis, specializes in concocting sweet and savory masterpieces from gardenvariety insects, like silk worms and crickets. Dennis has staged several dinners where the majority of the dishes contain a sizable amount of bugs. “They’re everywhere, they’re plentiful, why not eat them?” he
asked. Insects, high in protein and low in fat, are a healthy way to balance your diet, according to Dennis. He says people will have to get past the “yuck factor” and educate themselves on the merits — and flavors — of an insect-based diet. “It’s matter of taste,” he said. And experts like Steel agree. She said within the next 10 years, many bizarre food will be welcome to the table. “There are some foods that will become part of the norms to eat,” she said. “Fried insects will be one of them.”

Dining Delights Joe’s Crab Shack Fairview Heights 2 1/2 stars Great fun, but for the price and what you get, not really a bargain. Wait staff sing and dance and very casual dining. Alfonzo’s Maryville 3 1/2 stars Food is awesome, especially the tomato basil pizza and their bread bites. Prices are a bit higher than you would expect to pay for a pizza dinner. Good for families with kids, they can play in the arcade while you are waiting on the food, just bring your wallet. Chevy’s Fresh Mex O’Fallon 4 1/2 stars One of my personal favorites, love their fresh salsa and chips. Also love their chicken fajita nachos. Portions are large and prices are very reasonable. Service has been great every time. Lone Star Steak House O’Fallon 4 stars Great steaks, seafood and chicken. Salads are good, including their Texas Ranch dressing. Of course they have “bloomin’ onions” and peanuts to munch on while you wait for your food. Fun atmosphere. Wasabi Edwardsville 4 stars Okay, I admit that I hesitantly give this four stars as I am not a lover of Sushi, nor am I an expert of Sushi. But, I have eaten their Shrimp Tempura, and have tasted some of their other dishes, all of which are very good. But those I went with love Sushi and claim that theirs is awesome. Service was very good and helpful. Buffet City Edwardsville 3 stars Huge selection of food. Chinese selections, American selections, both hot and cold. Some really good, some not so much. Dinner prices a little high if you are going as a family. Good service.
Have best pork tenderloin sandwich in the world. Everything else is okay, but you won’t pay much. Service is fair. Tony’s Alton 3 stars Known for their pepperloin, they serve steaks, pasta, chicken. Prices are a bit high, so go for a special event. Dress is casual. Have outside dining also. Zia’s On the Hill-St. Louis 4 stars Their seafood stuffed mushrooms are fantastic. The appetizers alone are worth the visit. Veal, chicken, steaks, sandwiches are all offered. There homemade fresh pastas are some of the best. Average pasta dish about $12. Good service. NOW RE-OPENED-had closed for a few months due to fire, but now reopened-stop by and check out the new decor. Lorenzo’s Trattoria

Shogun Japanese Steak and Sushi Fairview Heights 4 stars Your choice of table side cooking or dining room setting. If you sit table side, you will share the grill with about 15 or so other people. You can order full dinners or ala carte. Sushi is also available. Fun place to go with a group of friends or just on a date. Captain’s Table Buffet 4 stars Argosy Casino-Alton Come hungry and wear loose fitting clothes. They have too many choices to mention, but enjoy their
carved meats, pastas, side dishes and delectable desserts. Worth the trip and the money. Good stuff! Pasta House Co. Edwardsville 4 stars Still love their house salad, a St. Louis favorite for many years. Good pastas, steaks, and sandwiches. A little pricey for a family meal, but not terrible for a date or special night out. Their rolls are fantastic. Shenanigans Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars General bar and grill fare, wings, sandwiches, potato skins, etc. Have a few specialty dishes and drink specials. Offer indoor and outdoor dining. Good party type atmosphere with plenty of tv’s for sports watching. Cracker Barrel Troy 4 stars I know, everyone has eaten at Cracker Barrel, so who needs our
opinion. But still is one of the best values for a family for a decent meal. You can have breakfast any time of the day. The service is generally top notch. Love the “down home” ambiance and the fireplace in the winter. Can’t beat a good Cracker Barrel! Bully’s Smokehouse Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars The food is good at Bully’s, but a little foo-foo for a barbecue place. The prices are a little more than typical barbecue fare. Good for business lunch or dinner and nice servings. Pantera’s Pizza Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars Still some of the best pizza around, but the decor needs a bit of updating, along with the dinner ware. The buffet is good if they keep it full, but that can be an issue at times. You better put on your running shoes to get that hot selection before everyone else beats you to it!
