EAC plays host to "Collage Mash Up"
By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge
T
he Edwardsville Arts Center ’s next exhibit, “Collage Mash Up” opened March 24. “Collage Mash Up” features the work of eight artists who use collage as an important part of their artistic process. Brigham Dimick, SIUE Professor of Art & Design and Head of Drawing, is curating the show and explained that the art of collage begins with an assemblage of diverse elements in unexpected juxtaposition. “Each fragment imported into a collage has an individual voice replete with its own history and identity. Like the host of a dinner party, the artist arranges these fragments and nurtures conversations that would otherwise not take place, allowing richness to arise from diverse experiences,” Dimick noted. He further pointed out that the artists in “Collage Mash Up” explore collage through various techniques. “Whether mining treasures in antique stores, casting interlocking forms made from diverse materials, or deconstructing found books, the artists in this exhibition excel at the careful collecting of various parts,” he added. “After amassing such collections that serve as characters in their respective narratives, these artists reveal their gifts at creating compelling tensions between the parts.

Louis “Louie” Schmidt and his wife Aletha gifted funds to Eden Village Retirement Community in Glen Carbon. The Schmidt family has a long history with Eden Village. Almost 40 years ago Louie, Wesley Bornemann, and other members of Eden United Church were searching for different types of outreach ministries that would benefit the community. They determined the need for housing and healthcare for seniors would become their mission. Over the years Louie worked in the transportation department at Eden Village. He later was a resident in the Skilled Care Center at Eden Village. A bird aviary in Louie’s memory is still enjoyed in the atrium at Eden Village by residents, staff and visitors. Louie’s wife Aletha also was a resident for years in the dementia care unit at Eden Village. The last sibling to the Schmidt family, Betty Heepke and her husband Harold, has helped decide to purchase a new van for Eden Village with Louie and Aletha’s Estate gift. Betty and Harold have lived at Eden Village since 2008. They initially lived in a Garden Home and currently are residing in the Suites Apartment Building at Eden Village. There are residents residing at Eden Village that have fond memories of Louie and Aletha and the Schmidt Family.

People People planner Apollo 11 exhibit coming to St. Louis The Saint Louis Science Center is proud to announce that it is one of four science museums nationwide to host “Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission,” a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. The exhibition will feature the Apollo 11 command module Columbia, marking the first time in 46 years the module has left the museum, as well as 20 artifacts from the historic mission. After the exhibition tour, the artifacts will return to the Smithsonian for a new exhibition, also titled “Destination Moon,” which will open in 2020. “Destination Moon” will be at the Saint Louis Science Center from April 14 to Sept. 3, 2018. The 49th anniversary of the moon landing is July 20, 2018. “St. Louis played a vital role in the Space Race, with McDonnellDouglas serving as a key leader in the development of the Mercury and Apollo mission technology,” said Bert Vescolani, president and CEO. “We are honored to have the opportunity to host this exhibition, which represents an iconic period in our country’s history. We are the only museum in the Midwest to host this exhibition, which is so special for the city of St. Louis. We feel very honored because we know that for many people this will be a once- in-a-lifetime chance to see these artifacts.” In addition to the Apollo 11 command module Columbia, the only portion of the historic spacecraft to complete the first mission to land a man on the moon and safely return him to Earth, the exhibition will feature: • Star Chart: The chart shows the positions of the sun, moon and stars at the time Apollo 11 was scheduled to leave Earth’s orbit and head for the moon. • Rucksack #1, Survival Kit: One of two rucksacks filled with equipment to help the crew survive for up to 48 hours in the event of an emergency landing somewhere on Earth. The kit includes three water containers, a radio beacon and spare battery, three pairs of sunglasses, six packages of desalting chemicals, a seawater desalter kit, two survival lights, a machete and two
bottles of sunscreen. • Aldrin’s Extravehicular Visor: Buzz Aldrin wore this outer helmet while on the surface of the moon. It fit over his clear pressure-bubble helmet. • Aldrin’s Extravehicular Gloves: These gloves have an outer, cutresistant shell of Chromel-R fabric across the hands to prevent fatal air leaks caused by handling sharp objects and gauntlets to protect against solar heating. The blue fingertips were made of silicone rubber to provide more sensitivity for touching. Vescolani said, “‘Destination Moon’ will help visitors of all ages to appreciate the accomplishment of the Moon Landing and all of the work that went into making it happen. We hope the exhibition inspires our guests to think about what is next in space discovery. Perhaps one of them will play a role in exploring Mars and beyond.” Saint Louis Science Center The mission of the Saint Louis Science Center is to ignite and sustain lifelong science and technology learning. Named a Smithsonian Institution Affiliate in 2016, the Saint Louis Science Center features more than 700 interactive exhibits, as well as a five-story OMNIMAX Theater, Boeing Hall and the James S. McDonnell Planetarium. For more information about the Saint Louis Science Center, please visit slsc.org.

Three one-hour episodes will be produced from the St. Louis appraisal event and will be aired in 2018. Antiques Roadshow, the 14-time Emmy Award nominated show, airs Mondays on Nine Network at 7 p.m. Central. Admission to Antiques Roadshow is free, but tickets are required and must be obtained in advance. Fans can apply now for a chance to receive one pair of free tickets per household. To find out more information and to find a link to apply for tickets, visit http:// www.pbs.org/antiques/tickets/. Following the deadline, ticket winners will be selected at random by a third party and contacted via an email containing their tickets. “The Nine Network couldn’t be happier to welcome back Antiques Roadshow for the first time in over 15 years,” said Nine Network President and CEO Jack Galmiche. “It’s consistently one of our mostwatched shows and gives us a chance to host an event we know our viewers are extremely excited about.” Antiques Roadshow is also accepting furniture submissions for the 2017 tour. The series is looking for a few pieces of furniture to appraise and display on the set. Selected pieces will be transported to the event and back at no cost to the owner. For more details visit: http:// www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/ furniture/. The Nine Network’s own Antiques Roadshow-style event, Trash or Treasure, a partnership with the Kodner Gallery, regularly draws large crowds for appraisals in more than 20 categories. The annual event gives fans another chance to determine the worth of their most prized possessions.

QuickGlance Movie Reviews
"Bitter Harvest"
"Stalin's tyranny could destroy their country. But not their love." Yep, that's the tagline for "Bitter Harvest," the new movie about young love during the Holodomor, the 1932-33 forced famine in Ukraine orchestrated by Josef Stalin that killed millions. And if it sounds like a schmaltzy, soap opera-like treatment of a serious and historic tragedy, well, that's because it is. That's too bad, because teaching important history to younger generations via popular culture is always a worthy cause. It's just that soaking this sobering story in a soppy romance does little to advance that cause. "Bitter Harvest," directed by George Mendeluk, stars the British actor Max Irons (son of Jeremy) as Yuri, the thoughtful grandson of a venerated Ukrainian warrior, and Samantha Barks as Natalka, the village girl he loves. Barks finds a bit more depth of character between the lines of the gooey, unsubtle script by Mendeluk and first-time screenwriter Richard Bachynsky-Hoover; Irons, who might play a good Romeo one day, is reduced to smoldering soulfully as his country implodes. We're introduced to these characters as children, in a seemingly idyllic life in the countryside, frolicking in the woods and swimming in the river. "My Ukraine," Yuri intones in an earnest opening voiceover, was a place "where legends lived and anything was possible." Yuri's father (Barry Pepper) inculcates a love of freedom in the young boy. "No one can ever take away our freedom," he tells Yuri, in words that we know will echo in his head — and we do mean literally — years later. "Remember that!" RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for violence and disturbing images." RUNNING TIME: 103 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.
"Beauty and the Beast"
The Disney "live-action" remakes, of which the new "Beauty and the Beast" is but one in an assembly line, are starting to resemble an iPhone software update. Click a button and that old cartoon interface changes Belle into Emma Watson, the Beast into Dan Stevens and maybe fixes a few bugs in the system. "Beauty and the Beast," that "tale as old as time" (or, to pinpoint it, 1740, when the French fairy tale was published), could certainly use a few tweaks. It is, after all, a fable about finding beauty within that ends, curiously, with the once superficial prince falling for a beautiful woman he's kidnapped, whose name literally means beauty. If you'd like to untangle those ironies, please, be our guest. Director Bill Condon's film — let's call it "Beauty and the Beast 2.0" — often feels in search of a purpose beyond the allbut-certain dollar signs. Much of the live-action/digital effects makeover is less lifelike than the Oscar-winning 1991 animated film: It's gained a dimension but lost a pulse. The merely fine acting and the lavish production design (the sumptuous sets nearly swallow the performers whole) dutifully strive to make this a worthy enterprise. Opposites attract, of course. And this "Beauty and the Beast" is equal parts dispiriting and enchanting: overflowing in handsome craft, but missing a spirit inside. Howard Ashman and Alan Menken's songs still have their infectious kick, but most of the big musical moments feel more like very good covers of the originals. (There are also three less-memorable new songs by Menken and Tim Rice.) RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some action violence, peril and frightening images." RUNNING TIME: 129 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Kong: Skull Island"
Not since Marlon Brando in "Apocalypse Now" murmured of "the horror" has such a brooding beast lurked deep within a war-ravaged jungle as the King Kong of "Kong: Skull Island." Yes, the big ape is back, this time with a rollicking Vietnam War backdrop and the Creedence Clearwater-thumping soundtrack to match. The year is 1973, Nixon is pulling troops out of Vietnam and American explorer Bill Randa (John Goodman) has convinced a senator (Richard Jenkins) to bankroll a quick expedition on the way out to an uncharted South Pacific island where "myth and science meet." Unlike Brando's Colonel Kurtz, we don't have to wait very long for our errand boys — a cobbled-together team lead by Lieutenant Colonel Packard (Samuel L. Jackson) — to encounter Kong on the exotic island. No sooner has their swarm of helicopters penetrated the island's permanently stormy perimeter is Kong swatting them away like flies, and the soldiers —fresh off the failed war — yet again find themselves in a gruesome quagmire. What's a gorilla got to do with Vietnam? Well, that's the 800pound metaphor in the room. "Kong: Skull Island" is the latest in a long line of reboots going back to the 1933 original. The disappointment of Peter Jackson's lavish but bloated 2005 attempt pushed producers to explore some other kind of evolution for the chest-pounding primate. Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (whose only previous feature was the indie comedy "The Kings of Summer") has uprooted the tale from its imperialist origins (beware of what you plunder abroad) and commissioned Kong as a stand-in for the folly of Vietnam. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and for brief strong language." RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
"Trainspotting 2"
Nostalgia can be tricky, casting a rose-colored glow on memories that may not deserve it. Do we look back fondly on our youth because it was so magical, or simply because it was our youth, with so many mistakes yet to be made? That question is central in "T2 Trainspotting ," which is all about the hazy warmth of nostalgia, both for its characters and its audience. Twenty-one years after "Trainspotting" shocked moviegoers with depictions of drug use and directionless Gen-Xers, "T2" reunites the original writer, director and cast for another timely look at modern life. These characters that wiled away their 20s with heroin and petty crime in a cult film that captured the frustrated voice of a generation are now middleaged, with all the perspective and regret the passage of time can bring. Of course, director Danny Boyle, screenwriter John Hodge and stars Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner and Robert Carlyle have experienced that same passage of time, making "T2" even more poignant than an ordinary movie about male friendships. Here, the fictional characters and real filmmakers are facing the same challenges of aging and adulthood; of returning to a formative place after two decades and reflecting on what's happened since. Mark Renton (McGregor), who kicked drugs and ripped off his friends in the original "Trainspotting," comes back to Edinburgh as his life is falling apart. He pursued exactly the kind of mainstream lifestyle he railed against in the film's famous "choose life" monologue. Despite having a wife, a house, a corporate job and a gym membership, Renton is miserable. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "drug use, language throughout, strong sexual content, graphic nudity and some violence." RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Song to Song"
As filmmakers obsessed with his early work continue to ape his style, Terrence Malick has ventured beyond, reaching into territory that is stubbornly spiritual and anti-narrative. He eschews story conventions. He turns movie stars like Ben Affleck and Christian Bale into props, using them not for their acting but their broad shoulders that fill up the screen as ethereal women twirl around them. He has become his own genre and with experimental reveries like "To the Wonder" and "Knight of Cups," he has alienated some of his most ardent fans. That modern trilogy concludes with "Song to Song ," taking the filmmaker and his stars Rooney Mara, Ryan Gosling and Michael Fassbender to his adopted hometown of Austin, Texas. For those who wrote off Malick after "To the Wonder" or "Knight of Cups," it's unlikely that "Song to Song" will inspire a change of heart. But for the others, who've reservedly or unabashedly stayed with him, "Song to Song" is entirely worthy and even invigoratingly different from the previous two. There's actually a plot (kind of) and the actors are allowed to act and even have some life and (gasp) fun. "Song to Song" is a love triangle of sorts, very much in the Malick mode, where one is pure (Mara and Gosling's struggling musicians), one is untenable (Cate Blanchett and Gosling), one is damned (Fassbender's sleazy, wealthy producer and Mara) and one is doomed (Natalie Portman's local waitress/teacher and Fassbender). There are others sprinkled in there too, mostly for the guys. As retrograde as it is, in Malick's worlds they're emboldened to sleep around in the name of searching. The women are always a different story. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some sexuality, nudity, drug use and language. RUNNING TIME: 129 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
"Power Rangers"
There's a question every piece of intellectual property needs to ask itself before a new version is made: How seriously should we treat the source material? There's no right answer. There've been successful versions of both. Irreverent and meta takes on dated or impossible material have worked (usually thanks to Phil Lord and Chris Miller) as have deathly serious interpretations. In the case of "Power Rangers ," that cheesy Saturday morning show that cobbled together shameless merchandising goals, dubbed Japanese action footage and sanitized high school shenanigans, they went mostly serious. And it might not have been the best call for a story that still involves a villain named Rita Repulsa who wanders around town eating gold. But we'll get to her later. Even with such campy morsels to play with, the vibe director Dean Israelite seems to be going for is "Friday Night Lights" meets "Fantastic Four," which actually isn't totally awful at the beginning as we meet the five high school students destined to wield their newly found superpowers to save the world. There's the star football player, Jason (Dacre Montgomery), who's rebelling against his good-boy image; the once-popular girl Kimberly (Naomi Scott, who looks like a combination of Sarah Michelle Gellar and Emma Roberts); the "on-thespectrum" Billy (RJ Cyler); the mysterious new girl Trini (Becky G.); and the adventurous Zack (Ludi Lin). They're angsty teens with secrets and zero perspective so imagine how weird things get when they all happen to be hanging out one night in a restricted mining area, stumble upon some jewels, get into a would-be fatal car crash and wake up with the ability to crush iPhones and scale mountains. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sequences of sci-fi violence, action and destruction, language, and for some crude humor." RUNNING TIME: 124 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

"Song to Song" a new turn for Malick

As retrograde as it is, in Malick's worlds they're emboldened to sleep around in the name of searching. The women are always a different story. If there is a main character it's Mara's F a y e , w h o w e ' re t o l d i s a m u s i c i a n although we never see her playing — only hanging out on the side of the stage, idly holding a guitar. She's a local girl ashamed of her "bad heart" who takes up with both Gosling's BV and Fassbender's Cook at the same time. The innocent BV remains ignorant to this, even as the three become close enough to vacation together. Faye flits between the two and the tension builds as
we wonder when the charade of fidelity is going to lift. Combined with Emmanuel Lubezki's sumptuous cinematography, these travel scenes are fairly riveting. At times I even forgot I was watching a Malick film, which has somehow become more of a compliment recently than a criticism. There are unexpected moments of joy, too, that don't involve fields or women twirling or cryptic voiceovers: BV dancing in the dusk to Del Shannon's "Runaway," BV and Cook weightless on a plane, Patti Smith giving sage advice, Val Kilmer taking a chain saw to an amp. Do they add up to anything? Maybe mood. Maybe nothing. But it's wild and confident and unlike anything that his peers are making.
No sequel needed for "Power Rangers"
By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge Science fiction movies were not great when I was a kid, especially when it came to those that included action sequences or “special” effects. But that doesn’t really change the fact that I totally dug them then and still do now. Pictures like “Flight of the Navigator” or “MAC and Me” or “Solarbabies”. This stuff was terrible then and remains terrible today, but the genre survives infancy to today’s full-grown battle spectacle status by being versatile and ingenious and designed to make kids feel more powerful than they really never are. I wasn’t around when “Star Wars” launched (but we were a big “Return of the Jedi” family!) and “Star Trek” was my teenage jam (“TNG” Forever!!). But I still have a soft spot for the
creature effects and the other underwhelming characteristics of a good ‘80s sci-fi junker. It’s why I went to and suffered recent Godawful movies like “Max Steel” or “Project Almanac”. Many movie styles can capture lightning in a bottle twice. Good sci-fi can do it dozens of times. Recent history shows that this sub-sect of the genre is throttling down. I have to say the same thing about “Power Rangers”, the feature out this week, though it pains me to do it. I won’t lie to you. I totally watched “Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers” during its mid-90s heyday run, which included, for all those who doubt my sincerity, my freshman year of high school. My brother and I would watch the weekday reruns after breakfast, but before we caught the Minivan Express to Edwardsville Junior
High School. It was colorful. It was action-packed. It was harmless and never really hurt anyone, including the bad guys who were mostly comic relief. But I knew back then that it was garbage. So, too, was everything else being made for kids (except maybe “Transformers: Beast Wars”; at least that looked amazing!). With the opportunity for easy access to this week’s new movie, I jumped right into it. And nothing had changed. There is still a quintet of angry teens (“Breakfast Club”lite) forced to confront saving the universe from a monster-wielding agent of destruction (the luminous Elizabeth Banks slumming it as Rita Repulsa), a gangly robot creature (Bill Hader doing his usually solid work at punching up lame dialogue for laughs as Alpha Five), and a disembodied head give wise orders
from a screen (“Breaking Bad’s” Bryan Cranston doing his best impression of Marlon Brando in “Superman”). The kid stars are all a little overjoyed at being loners and rebellious and fringe. The lead (Dacre Montgomery), Red Ranger Jason, looks just like Zac Efron five years ago. Pop star Becky G plays Yellow Ranger Trini. The rest of the cast is suitably diverse for a movie made in 2017. There’s a bilingual Asian character. Billy is now suddenly both Autistic and African-American. Sexual orientation is a minor conflict. I hammer all of this to your attention because it doesn’t make for plot development or really – in any way – make this a decent film. Instead, politically correct filmmaking has turned nostalgia back on us once again. There was no reason to
April 6, 2017
make this movie other than the 40.3 million ($) ones that came during opening weekend. But shame on us. We wanted to see Zords! And Putties!! And the true downfall of Walter White with Cranston playing Zordon!!! No, thank you. I’ll leave certain cherished (or otherwise) memories in the vault where they belong. I hope that there’s no lasting damage done by the film. A sequel would nauseate me and that certainly can’t be what the fine people at Krispy Kreme (whose product placement figures heavily in the film) want to hear. “Power Rangers” runs 124 minutes and is rated PG-13 for scifi violence, action and destruction, language, and for some crude humor. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.

Religion
The story behind priests and celibacy By KIM HAINES-EITZEN Cornell University (THE CONVERSATION) Priestly celibacy, or rather the lack of it, is in the news. There have been allegations of sex orgies, prostitution and pornography against Catholic clerics in Italy. On March 8, Pope Francis suggested, in an interview with a German newspaper, Die Zeit, that the Catholic Church should discuss the tradition of celibacy in light of an increasing scarcity of priests in rural areas, especially in South America. Although some headlines have suggested that the pope’s latest comments signal a new openness to priestly marriage, neither of these recent developments – the allegations of sex scandals nor the debate about the tradition of priestly celibacy – should be surprising. Celibate Christians, both monks and clergy, have a long history with scandal. As a scholar of early Christianity, I think it’s important to highlight the fact that Catholic priestly celibacy has never been practiced uniformly and is, in fact, a late development in church practice. Origins of Christian celibacy One of the surprising and distinctive
features of early Christianity is the praise of celibacy – the practice of abstaining from all sexual relations – as an exemplary way to demonstrate one’s faith. Given Christianity’s origins within firstcentury Palestinian Judaism, it was hardly a given that the new religion would develop a high regard for celibacy. Judaism valued family life, and many ritual observances were centered on the family. But the early Christian Gospels, which told the story of the life of Jesus in the early first century A.D., never mentioned a possible wife – a fact that has given rise to wild speculation in novels, films and recent sensational news stories. And Paul, a Jewish convert whose letters are the earliest books contained in the New Testament, implies that he himself was unmarried when he writes to the earliest Christian communities. The stories of these founder figures, however, do not explain the course of Christian teaching about asceticism – a wide range of practices of self-discipline that include fasting, giving up personal possessions, solitude and eventually priestly celibacy. By the third and fourth centuries A.D., Christian writers had begun elevating the
practice of celibacy and asceticism. They did so by pointing to both Jesus and Paul as models of the ascetic life as well as by carefully interpreting scripture in support of the practice of celibacy. The influence of Greco-Roman philosophy Christianity developed in a complex world of Greco-Roman religious diversity, including Judaism as well as a variety of Greco-Roman religious movements. From Judaism it inherited monotheistic ideas, codes of ethical conduct, ritual practices like fasting, and a high regard for scriptural authority. From Greco-Roman philosophies, Christian writers adopted ideals of self-control (“enkrateia,” in Greek) and withdrawal (“anachoresis,” a term that came to be applied to Christian hermits). Discipline and self-control meant control over one’s emotions, thoughts and behaviors as well as, in some cases, careful attention to what one ate and drank, how attached one was to possessions and the control of one’s sexual desire. Over the course of several centuries, Christian writers – church leaders in many cases – took the moral and scriptural ideals from Judaism and coupled them with GrecoRoman philosophical ideals of self-control to
argue for the virtue of celibacy. Christian views on suffering and persecution Simultaneously, and also from a very early stage, Christians viewed themselves as a persecuted minority. This meant that one way Christians could prove their faith was by being resolute during these times of persecution. This victimization could take the form of individuals being called before a judge and possibly executed, or it could be directed against communities as a whole through mocking and slander. In either case, from the beginning Christians developed a view of themselves as a suffering and persecuted minority. This attitude naturally changed when the Roman Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity in the fourth century and issued an Edict of Toleration for all religions. Christians now had to reevaluate their self-identity. And they appear to have increasingly channeled their views about suffering, asceticism and celibacy into the formation of monasteries and convents, where groups of men and women could live lives of celibacy, prayer and manual labor. "Sex with Strangers" stars Christopher Tipp, left, and Kelly Hummert. Below is director Michelle Bossy.
"Sex with Strangers" to be performed in CWE For The Edge REBEL AND MISFITS PRODUCTIONS, LLC is thrilled to announce “Sex with Strangers,” its first project in a new series called “An Intimate Theatre Project.” The provocative and timely play comes from Laura Eason (House of Cards) and will be directed by New York City’s Michelle Bossy. The event runs March 30 through April 15 at a private home in the Central West End (4632 McPherson Avenue). Starting nightly at 8pm, each performance will seat a small, intimate audience of approximately 50 people. “With ‘An Intimate Theatre Project,’ I’m sourcing some of the most honest and raw plays out there right now, beginning with ‘Sex with Strangers,’ and looking to set them amongst a very small audience,” said Kelly Hummert, Artistic Director of Rebel and Misfits. “I want those in attendance to feel like voyeurs, flies on the wall, and totally overwhelmed by the content and proximity to the players. The atmosphere is intimate, and the acting isn’t presentation but rather subtle with a focus on total realism. We want attendees to feel that this subject matter is difficult to watch, sexy and voyeuristic in nature. If you don’t feel a little uncomfortable, we aren’t doing it right.” “Sex with Strangers” incubated at Chicago’s Steppenwolf theatre in 2009 and had successful runs at Second Stage Theatre in New York, Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles and The Hampstead in London. It was one of the top 10 produced plays in 2015 and 2016, receiving more than 30 productions in the United States and also internationally. Rebel and Misfit’s production will be the St Louis premier of the show. As Laura Eason explains her play, “How far will you go to get what you want? Will you be the same person if you do? When twentysomething star sex blogger and memoirist Ethan tracks down his idol, the gifted but obscure novelist Olivia, he finds they crave what the other possesses. As attraction turns to sex, and they inch closer to getting what they want, both most confront the dark side of ambition and the trouble of reinventing oneself when the past is only a click away.”
The small two-person cast features New York’s Christopher Tipp as Ethan and Kelly Hummert as Olivia. Both were recently featured in Rebel and Misfit’s immersive theatre production of “Hamlet: See What I See” (there, they played loving siblings, Laertes and Ophelia, whereas now they play complicated lovers). “Sex with Strangers” is directed by M i c h e l l e B o s s y, a M e x i c a n - A m e r i c a n theatre director and filmmaker dedicated to bringing original, new work to stage and screen. She recently directed short films 18, She Grinds Her Own Coffee, and The New 35; as well as collaborated on a new web series, TeleMAMAS. Michelle’s theatre
productions include Every Good Girl Deserves Fun, Un Plugged In, South Beach Rapture and Sarajevo’s Child, among many other new plays. Michelle was the Associate Artistic Director of Primary Stages in New York, where she worked for 13 years. While there, she ran the Dorothy Strelsin New American Writers Group, where she worked with more than 25 emerging writers on the creation of new plays. Michelle holds the first undergraduate directing degree from Webster University’s Conservatory of Theatre Arts. She teaches acting and playwriting for the Einhorn School of Performing Arts (ESPA) and directing for Syracuse University’s Tepper Semester.

More about REBEL AND MISFITS PRODUCTIONSRebel and Misfits Productions is a St Louis-based theatre company founded by actor, artistic director and producer Kelly Hummert. Fall 2016’s "Hamlet: See What I See" was its inaugural production and the first show in a series of true immersive theatre experiences – which create no line between the actors and spectators - called jointly "The Immersive Theatre Project." Hoping to provide St Louis audiences with personal theatre experiences in unique formats, “The Immersive Theatre Project” and “An Intimate Theatre Project” will run in tandem throughout 2017 and 2018. The name of Rebel and Misfits Productions is derived from the Steve Jobs quote, “Here’s to crazy ones. The rebels. The misfits. Because the people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.” Kelly Hummer t is or iginally f rom Illinois and attended Webster University. She returned to St Louis in 2011 after spending eight years doing theatre in New York including playing Viola in Twelfth Night at Brooklyn Shakespeare Experience, Maggie in After The Fall with Stage 15 Productions, Medea in Medea Redux in The 24 Hour Plays at the Public, the New York Premiere of Kato McNickle’s Swimming In The Ocean, and Helen in the workshop of Warning: Adult Content at MCC. St.ART Street Art Festival planned
St. Louis resident and wellness visionary Michael G. Tompkins is
pleased to introduce on Valentine’s Day the inaugural St.ART Street Art Festival in St. Louis, Missouri Sept. 30 and Oct 1. The goal of the 2-day festival is to encourage hope, healing and positive dialogue through art— including large canvas painting, poetry, performance art, and “yarn bombing” trees. During the weekend, a group of inspired local and renowned street artists will convey the emotions of the underprivileged and silenced in the community on large canvases and through spoken word, in the city of St. Louis. “The divide in St. Louis between those that have and those that have not is undeniable. Not unlike the iconic St. Louis Arch, art has an ability to bridge the divide. Art brings various opinions together in a way where all opinions are valid. There is no black and white; right or wrong,” says Tompkins. The artists begin the dialogue by conveying the voice and frustration of the people on the first day, then express their vision of our new community on day two. The festival will be interactive with the audience, using yarn bombing on trees for the observers to leave their own personal messages of frustration and hope. While the first day will be held in Fairgrounds Park, day two will be held at Langenberg Field in Forest Park. Both days are complementary and open to the public from 10am-8pm. Street artists signed on include Basil Kincaid, Cbabi Bayoc, Fnnch, Peat Eyez Wollaeger, Kidlew a n d S t e p h e n “ YA R N b o m b e r ” Duneier. Poets include Pacia Anderson, and Richard Blanco. Blanco, who was selected by President Barack Obama in 2012 to serve as the fifth inaugural poet in U.S. history (joining the ranks of Robert Frost and Maya Angelou), will open and close the festival. Artists and donors were quick to embrace Tompkins’ vision to use street art to start a dialogue between diverse groups in St. Louis. A recent transplant to St. Louis, Tompkins came up with the idea for St.ART after witnessing amazing street art following the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson. Day one of St.ART, the canvases will be painted in black and white.
N
The TRUTH of the hopelessness, the desperation of not feeling heard, and the hardships found in our inner city neighborhoods. Day two the theme is: “Hope has color.” In one of the brightest areas that our city celebrates, those same artists will paint in color, their vision of our new community. “The incident in Ferguson changed me from having rose colored glasses about St. Louis, to becoming aware of the distinct socioeconomic and racial divide, which has been palpable to both the black and white populations in our community for decades,” said Tompkins. “When I saw messages of frustration and despair, as well as messages of hope displayed, it spurred me take action. Large scale art has always had an ability to convey emotion on a much grander scale—the impact is so much bigger. Street art speaks a universal language and by allowing the artwork to stand on its own it takes away the ego of judgement.” The proceeds of the canvas sales will fund resiliency programs for the inner city and public service sector. To date, St.ART has already raised individual donations totaling more than 55 percent of our event budget— nearly all of the donors outside the city of St. Louis. About St.Art St.Louis St.ART is an innovative festival with a shared vision to open a dialogue. The goal of the 2-day street art festival is to encourage hope, healing and positive dialogue through art—including large canvas painting, poetry, performance art, and “yarn bombing” trees. During the weekend, of Sept. 30-Oct 1, a group of inspired and renowned street artists will convey the emotions of the underprivileged and silenced in the city of St. Louis. Tax deductible contributions can be made online at www.Generosity.com search term St.ART or visit http://st-artstlouis. org/.

Other times, they create their own from the Dead's massive catalog of songs. If you were born too late to experience the Grateful Dead in their prime or want to relive

rock' band. FIREFALL is a group of exceptional musicians and singers, with a repertoire of recognizable songs few bands can match. Their many hits - "You Are The Woman," "Just Remember I Love You," "Strange Way," " Cinderella," "Mexico," " Livin' Ain't Livin'," " So Long," " Goodbye I Love You," " Sweet and Sour" and others - are faithfully recreated with a freshness rare in live performances of such classics. Formed from the cream of Atlanta’s studio musicians, the Atlanta Rhythm Section (actually hailing from nearby Doraville, Georgia) came together in 1970 after working on a Roy Orbison recording session. In 1977, “So In To You” became the band’s breakthrough single, reaching the U.S. Top 10, and the album from which it came, A Rock And Roll Alternative, went gold. Their platinum follow-up album, Champagne Jam, broke into the Top 10 in 1978, together with the blockbuster single “Imaginary Lover” (“I’m Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight” was another major hit from the same album). From their beginnings in midSixties Ohio as a group of friends playing cover tunes to the presentday unit featuring founding member/pedal-steel innovator John David Call, veteran bassist Mike Reilly, propulsive drummer Scott Thompson and guitar ace Donnie Clark, Pure Prairie League continues to embellish the rich 43-year history
Rock of the '70s Tour planned
Four-famed acts will appear at The Family Arena in St. Charles on Oct. 14. Foghat’s live performances show why the band is still around today and why they will be able to keep on rockin’ as long as they want. This band truly is timeless. Constant touring is part of their DNA and the band just loves to play. Their live show is as intense as ever with the incredible energy and musicianship that one would expect and hope for from a seasoned band with such a long musical history and they are bringing their fans along for the ride. Foghat fans are everywhere and these days their audience consists of all ages. From the young kids who play Guitar Hero III and know all of the lyrics to ‘Slow Ride’, to the Dazed & Confused generation of 30-40 somethings and the ‘boomers’ who bought Foghat’s first vinyl or 8 track! Firefall was one of the first bands to bring the creative and musical richness of the Rocky Mountain area to the forefront of the industry. They helped spearhead the birth and continuation of the country rock / folk rock sound of the 70's. The band continues to dazzle audiences with their exuberant and rocking performances - this was no 'light
