Tennis anyone? McEnroe and Courier to square off in match at Family Arena By STEVE HORRELL Of The Edge An April 24 matchup between John McEnroe and Jim Courier, at the Family Arena, features two former No.1-ranked players with distinctive styles and temperaments. It’s difficult to say for certain what McEnroe, now 51, is best known for: a serveand-volley game that featured a feathery touch and a wind-up serve that sliced wickedly to either corner; or for his legendary mistreatment of linesmen and umpires. He is also widely recognized as a shrewd TV analyst for Grand Slam events. He won his third Wimbledon title in 1984, in a route of Jimmy Connors that took less than 90 minutes. Throughout his career, Courier, who is 11 years younger, relied on a grinding game that featured a devastating inside-out forehand, although his twohanded backhand was mediocre. Courier was able to compensate for the backhand earlier in his career by running around it and slapping forehand winners, but in later years that strategy failed him. Both men play guitar (Courier is also a drummer), and each has found success in the broadcasting booth. At Grand Slam events, McEnroe often teams with childhood friend Mary Carillo, with whom he won the 1977 French Open Mixed Doubles title. After his retirement, Courier became a tennis analyst for the USA Network, NBC Sports, TNT and the Seven Network. Six years ago, he founded Inside Out Sports and Entertainment, which owns and operates the Outback Champions Series, among other events, a collection of tennis events that features the top names in tennis over the age of 30. McEnroe was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1999; Courier made it six years later. Ticket prices for the McEnroe/Courier matchup range from $25.50 to $63.50. They can be purchased from the Family Arena box office, online at MetroTix. com, and by phone at (314) 647-2237.

My true Love gave to me . . . Local artist offers a personal touch By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Find something you are passionate about and figure out a way to make a living at it. Those are words of wisdom that are meant to encourage people to do what they love for a living and in order to find their way in life. Ashleigh McElroy has recently opened a new business where she is turning her passion into her living. She creates personalized pieces of fine art, which can be given as gifts, used to commemorate any special occasion or capture a memory in a more creative medium than just photography. She mostly works from photographs in order to create portraits in a variety of two-dimensional media. Clients can choose to have their likeness rendered via drawing (charcoal or chalk pastel), oil painting, or handcut silhouette. Once a client decides on the photograph they would like recreated, they then decide the portrait’s size and framing options. These specialized personal creations make for great unique gifts for weddings, anniversaries, pregnancies, milestone birthdays, Christmas or any other occasion that calls for something extra thoughtful or out of the ordinary. If that “standard” family photo is not what you are looking for, Ashleigh can help you with that too. Turning an ordinary snap shot of your family into an oil painting can be that family heirloom that would be just perfect for over the fireplace or the wall of the family room. Maybe that special gift for the grandparents for any occasion. “My favorite thing about making gifts,” said Ashleigh,”is the idea that I’m giving someone something special and one-of-a-kind. I think that means so much in times like now when our lives are so hectic and everything is mass-produced. Starting “my true Love gave to me...” is all about getting to do what I love and giving someone else the opportunity to own a priceless

personal heirloom.” Ashleigh Martin McElroy grew up in Marion, graduating from Marion High School in 2004. She attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where she studied a variety of fine art media for four years, graduating in May of 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Her media specialties include drawing, painting, photography, sewing and other assorted crafts. As a working artist, she has worked as a statue restorer and as a photographer’s assistant. She married David McElroy in December of 2007 and they reside in Edwardsville. To reach Ashleigh, you may e-mail her at ashleigh@ mytruelovegifts.com or call her at 659-1077. Effic to perform benefit concert for Father McGivney Catholic High School By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Locate the rock group Effic on Facebook and it won’t take long to realize that the group of eight band members has a fan base that spans 30 plus years. They were loved in the ‘70s as much as they are today. Effic, which is with Red Rose Records, has been a been a rock ‘n roll mainstay in southern Illinois and St. Louis since the early ‘70s. They were regulars at haunts such as The Granary, The Night Gallery, Stages, Mississippi Nights, The Benld Coliseum, Fat Cats, Ricco’s, The Collinsville Park Ballroom and The Wood River Music Room. As from the postings from their fans on Facebook, these are some much loved memories for many. In the past, Effic has shared the stage in a supporting capacity for such acts as Chicago, Styx, Miami Steve Van Zandt (Springsteen), John Waite and Eric Burdon, to name a few. The group of eight members includes five founding members: John Kleinhoffer on drums, John’s brother Mike Kleinhoffer on lead vocals, Johnny Scott on guitar, Chuck Bonano on bass guitar and Justing Kleinhoffer on guitar, and the addition of their touring line up of Brent Augustin on

April 8, 2010

keyboards and guitar, Al Gitersonke on sax and keyboards and Jeff Taylor on keyboards. In 2009, the group wrote, recorded and produced 10 songs that make up their newest release “Don’t Pinch Me, I’m Dreamin’. . .” at Red Rose Recording Studio, their own stateof-the-art recording and rehearsal facility in Highland. The final tracks were mastered by Larry and Kevin Nix at the world famous Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tenn. Just recently, the group wrapped filming concert footage for its first full-length hi-def DVD. Post-production is now under way for an intended early fall 2010 release. Since the release of “Don’t Pinch Me, I’m Dreamin’. . .”, Effic has performed a handful of benefit events, helping to raise thousands of dollars for a variety of metro-east civic, government and sports organizations. All members of the group have been life-long residents of southern Illinois. The recent announcement of the building and opening of Father McGivney Catholic High School is of particular interest to the group and Effic is proud to participate in an upcoming event that will assist in supporting this effort. The partnership with FMCHS is an undertaking that the band is particularly interested in supporting, as it will elevate the educational opportunities for families throughout the metroeast.

“The school will fulfill a need for a state-of-the-art Catholic high school for our growing communities-many of those towns that Effic has performed in throughout our history,” said Mike Kleinhoffer, lead vocalist. On Saturday, April 24, Effic will perform a “Rock ‘n Roll Celebration” at the St. Boniface Parish Gym in Edwardsville. Tickets and ticket packages are on sale now. For a ticket for admission for one: $52.50, and includes entrance to the event, a copy of the Effic CD “Don’t Pinch Me I’m Dreamin’. . .”, two drink tickets and free appetizers provided by Catered Affair. Admission for two: $100, and includes entrance to the event, a copy of the Effic CD “Don’t Pinch Me I’m Dreamin’. . .”, four drink tickets and free appetizers provided by Catered Affair. Additional adult beverages including beer, wine and spirits will be available throughout the evening an may be purchased by cash, check and credit card. Music Tuning in Amy Grant to appear at Touhill The Touhill Performing Arts Center presents An Evening with Amy Grant on Sunday, April 25, in the Anheuser-Busch Performance Hall at 7 p.m. Singer/songwriter Amy Grant will perform some of her biggest pop hits along with her most recognizable Christian material. Wi t h s i x G r a m m y Aw a rd s , numerous Dove Awards, a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame and various other accolades, Grant is an American music icon who has erased lines between genres. Her heartfelt style mixes elements of pop, folk and country while exploring faith and family in a diverse catalog of hits ranging from “El Shaddai” to “Baby Baby.” Grant’s illustrious career that spans three decades has produced 10 top-40 pop singles and 17 top-40 adult contemporary tracks as well as a string of contemporary Christian chart-toppers.

Her latest album, Somewhere Down the Road, is a collection that takes the listener on a musical journey that reverberates with messages of resiliency, promise and hope. “I am personally moved by the concept of our journey through life and because of all the years that have come before,” said Grant. “I find myself in a unique and somewhat rare position to be able to sing about that journey, and that’s an opportunity I don’t want to miss. Tickets for Amy Grant are $100 (Gold Circle), $65 and $45. They are available now at the Touhill Performing Arts Center Ticket Office; online at www.touhill.org; or by phone at 314.516.4949. The Touhill’s Ticket Office is located at One University Blvd., St. Louis, Mo. 63121. All St. Louis area students receive a 10% discount on two tickets with their I.D. Group and senior discounts are also available. The Touhill Performing Arts Center is located on the north campus of the University of Missouri-St. Louis, just 10 minutes

from Clayton. (Exit #240 from I-70). There is ample free parking, and the UMSL North Campus MetroLink Station is just steps from the Touhill’s main entrance.

Saint Louis Chamber Chorus to present “Strings Attached” While the pairing of choir and guitars might not seem a natural one, this program will certainly demonstrate the versatility of the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus. In a partnership ideal for a season titled “Collaborations II,” the Chorus will be joined by the celebrated Hanser McClellan guitar duo, which has been thrilling audiences across the country since 1996. Though unusual, the mix of guitars and choir has interested a number of great composers. Works by Heitor Villa-Lobos and Mario CastelnuovoTedesco form the heart of this program. Villa-Lobos’ “Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5” is one of the most

haunting and recognized works by Brazil’s best known composer. It will be performed to an arrangement by Bob Chilcott, formerly of the King’s Singers. Chilcott’s arrangement will be receiving its U.S. premiere at this concert. Castelnuovo-Tedesco, whose fame seems inextricably connected to the guitar, marries his music to the poetry of Spain’s Federico Garcia Lorca in a cycle of Spanish songs, “Romancero Gitano.” In the music and words, the audience will feel the passion of Spain, its people and customs. Additionally the Chamber Chorus will perform songs in praise of stringed instruments by Zoltan Kodaly and Sasha Johnson Manning, lute songs full of wit by John Dowland and, from Franz Schubert, Romantic lieder for guitar and men’s voices. Join the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus with “Strings Attached?,” at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 11 at Grace United Methodist Church. Parking is free. For more information about the concert, and tickets, call 636-4584343.

“The Bounty Hunter”

In this rarely humorous, action-laden romantic-comedy by director Andy Tennant (“Hitch”), Gerard Butler, the buff, smirking Scottish star of “300” and “The Ugly Truth,” plays Milo Boyd, a former cop turned bounty hunter who gets the job of his life: the opportunity to drag his ex-wife (Jennifer Aniston) to jail. Aniston, somewhat incredibly, is a hardnosed crime reporter for the New York Daily News. While tenaciously pursuing a lead on a suspicious murder, Hurley misses a court appearance for a car accident, and the judge issues a warrant for her arrest. But neither actor is playing a character as much as they’re playing movie stars. You’re always fully aware that you’re watching Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler — and perhaps that’s the idea. For better and worse, “The Bounty Hunter” is merely an opportunity to sit in the dark with these two likable, attractive stars, rather than piece together distorted glimpses of them in the tabloids. RATED: PG-13 for sexual content including suggestive comments, language and some violence. RUNNING TIME: 110 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

“Chloe”

This sex thriller from director Atom Egoyan is a pure guilty pleasure, if you take away that part about pleasure. The devoted cast led by Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson and Amanda Seyfried really burrows into the roles, but the intense performances cannot conceal the fact that these characters are shallow narcissists at their best and outright crazy people at their worst. This marital story of infidelity, deceit and obsession is not much more absurd than “Fatal Attraction,” one of the great guilty pleasures in screen history. Yet the movie rings false from the moment suspicious wife Moore, convinced husband Neeson is cheating on her, hires call girl Seyfried to push the man’s buttons and see if it’s true. The characters are so abnormal and their situation so contrived that it’s impossible to sit back and enjoy the train wreck the way you can revel in Glenn Close murderously popping out of that bathtub one last time in “Fatal Attraction.” RATED: R for strong sexual content including graphic dialogue, nudity and language. RUNNING TIME: 96 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“The Eclipse”

The acclaimed Irish playwright Conor McPherson (“The Weir,” “The Seafarer”) has crafted a film every bit as affecting and haunting as his plays. It’s a small, humble gem of a movie that in less than 1 1/2 hours proves McPherson’s talents for character and atmosphere fit the screen as much as they do the stage. Ciaran Hinds (“There Will Be Blood”) stars as Michael Farr, a father and widower living a quiet life in the Irish coastal city of Cobh. While volunteering for the city’s annual literary festival, he befriends a writer of ghost stories (Iben Hjejle), who, herself, is badgered by a former fling (Aidan Quinn). Michael, clinging to grief over his wife, is haunted by horrifying, realistic visions. What’s curious about the supernatural elements is that their appearances feel more like ugly cameos of reality: In McPherson’s world, life is the dream from which the ghosts wake you. RATED: R for language and some disturbing images. RUNNING TIME: 88 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

“Hot Tub Time Machine”

John Cusack heads back to the 1980s with this time-travel adventure that’s occasionally amusing but mostly is as lazy, self-involved and garish as that chintzy decade itself. Casting Cusack, one of the most enduring stars to rise out of the ’80s, adds some promise. If this guy signed on (he’s also a producer on the movie), it cannot be as dumb as it sounds, right? It pretty much is as dumb as it sounds, though, landing closer to the moronic monotony of “Dude, Where’s My Car?” than the inspired idiocy of “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.” Cusack and co-star Craig Robinson are fine as half of a foursome whose drunken night in a magic hot tub hurls them back to 1986, where they have a chance to fix their loser lives. But much of director Steve Pink’s comedy hinges on character actors Rob Corddry and Clark Duke, who overdo everything with a shrillness that makes the movie’s crass jokes and gags all the more obnoxious — and a lot less funny than they might have been. RATED: R for strong crude and sexual content, nudity, drug use and pervasive language. RUNNING TIME: 99 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“How to Train Your Dragon”

DreamWorks Animation has been at the head of the pack for adorable, fast-talking critters with movies such as “Over the Hedge,” “Kung Fu Panda” and the “Madagascar” series. With DreamWorks’ latest, writer-directors Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois tone down the glib factor and tell a pretty good action yarn, a boy-and-his-dragon story filled with fiery Viking battles, swordplay and dazzling aerial imagery. For small children, the movie may not rate as high on the laugh and sight-gag meter as some of those earlier, more slapstick-y DreamWorks tales. After a slow, rather droning start, though, the film takes off on an exhilarating ride through the ancient Norse world, the hardscrabble landscape also a pleasant change from the softer realms of other cartoons. RATED: PG for sequences of intense action and some scary images, and brief mild language. RUNNING TIME: 98 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“Waking Sleeping Beauty”

This documentary is a behind-the-scenes look at Disney animation during the heady times of 1984-1994, a streak that produced “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin” and “The Lion King.” Made by the Walt Disney Company and directed and narrated by longtime Disney producer Don Hahn, the film is an unabashed bit of navelgazing. But it’s also a good story and includes more insider intrigue than you might expect, much of it involving executives Roy Disney, Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg. Much of the film maintains the perspective of the rank-and-file animators. It’s stuffed with grainy home movies of office life on the Disney lot, water cooler griping and — best of all — caricature drawings by the animators of their bosses. The biggest success of the movie is its depiction of the fraught, passionate and idiosyncratic collaborative process of animation. Times change, of course, and now it’s Pixar’s world: the circle of life, or something. RATED: PG for some thematic elements and brief mild language. RUNNING TIME: 86 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

Cyrus sets singing aside in “Last Song” By DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) — Singing was the last thing on Miley Cyrus’ mind in “The Last Song.” Other than a brief sing-along to a tune on a car radio, her character doesn’t do any crooning, something Cyrus deliberately avoided with her first lead in a live-action film that doesn’t feature musical alter-ego Hannah Montana. “I didn’t want to sing in the film. We sang in the car that once, but that doesn’t really count. I didn’t want to do a performance thing,” said Cyrus, who also contributes two songs to the soundtrack but figures she wants to keep singing and acting separate from now on. “I never say I’m not going to do anything. Then if I end up doing it, I’m going to get a lot of crap. ‘She said she’d never ...’, you know? And I don’t have time for that drama and people freaking out. But most likely, I’d like to stay away from music in films and do a little something less obvious.” Music in general is going on hold for Cyrus, who said an upcoming album will be her last for at least a few years, because she wants to concentrate on big-screen roles. Cyrus, 17, has a handful of episodes left to shoot in the final season of “Hannah Montana,” the Disney Channel series that made her a star. She has remained in the Disney stable for a “Hannah Montana” concert movie and feature film and led the voice cast with John Travolta in the studio’s animated hit “Bolt.” “The Last Song,” also from Disney, is a calculated effort by teen idol Cyrus to graduate into more grownup territory and bring her fans along without alienating them as she moves beyond Hannah’s happy

Associated Press In this March 13, 2010 photo, actress Miley Cyrus, from the upcoming film “The Last Song” poses for portrait in Santa Monica, Calif. world. Cyrus’ mother, Tish Cyrus, was the executive producer on “The Last Song.” “She and Tish, her mom and also her manager, are very astute people and knew precisely what would be the right next movie for Miley,” said Julie Anne Robinson, who directed “The Last Song.” “She’s demonstrated that she has got emotional range and depth in this movie that can take her forward. I really think she could do almost anything.” Cyrus’ character, Ronnie, is

dealing with grim issues involving her divorced parents (Greg Kinnear and Kelly Preston) as she reluctantly spends a summer with her estranged dad, a composer and pianist who would love nothing more than to see his daughter resume her own abandoned piano studies. Yet “The Last Song” also lets Ronnie put in some fun time at the beach with a hunky new beau (Liam Hemsworth, Cyrus’ real-life boyfriend). “It’s a good steppingstone. Nothing too crazy. It’s mature, but

it’s kind of for everyone,” Cyrus said. “I think my next step, I’ll get more and more mature and edgier, but I think it was the best steppingstone for me.” “The Last Song” was written specifically for Cyrus by novelist Nicholas Sparks, whose best-selling love stories include Hollywood adaptations such as “The Notebook,” “A Walk to Remember,” “Nights in Rodanthe” and this year ’s “Dear John.” Cyrus had expressed interest in taking on an inspirational story like

“A Walk to Remember,” and Sparks developed the plot and characters, then worked up the screenplay with his friend Jeff Van Wie. Once the script was done, Sparks sat down to write the novel version of “The Last Song,” which came out last year. Sparks tailored plot points to Cyrus, letting her choose her character’s name (Ronnie was her grandfather’s name) and developing sequences in which Ronnie tries to save a nest of endangered sea turtles after Cyrus mentioned she loved animals.

Sometimes, the name says it all By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge Could any title be more self-explanatory than Hot Tub Time Machine? Maybe Snakes on a Plane? Certainly the first two films from Disneynature, Earth and Oceans, though documentaries often play by their own sets of rules. What about something broader, like Pirates of the Caribbean? Think about it for a while and you’ll realize that often we can handicap a movie fairly accurately without even stepping foot into an auditorium. That’s why marketing is such a major player in Hollywood. Why then am I not surprised by the absolutely average result of Hot Tub Time Machine? If you chop the title in half, you get a setup and then a setup to the setup. The hot tub comes into play when depressed forty-somethings Adam (John Cusack) and Nick (Craig Robinson) treat their buddy Lou (Rob Corddry) to a trip to Kodiak Valley, the ski bunny Mecca where they

Lou’s been dealt a rougher hand even than his pals and they hope this vacation from his woes will stave off future suicide attempts (the first is comically set – though I wonder if suicide is ever funny – to Motley Crue as Lou sits in his running car with the garage door closed). Accompanying the guys on their trip if Adam’s nephew, Jacob (Clark Duke), a sheltered nerd who rarely sees the out of doors. It’s when the gang reaches their

lodge that the time machine makes its first appearance. After a rough round of boozesoaked relaxation, they awake, desperately hung-over, to find that it’s 1986 and to everyone else they look like the younger versions of themselves. T h e p l o t i s c h e e s y a n d i n c o h e re n t , especially the oddly-placed mystic character played ineffectively by a really old-looking Chevy Chase. It’s merely about four guys who decide against preserving the future and setting about to change as many things as they can to improve their future lives. Nick starts that music career that eluded him the first time around. Adam sets up his love life to keep it from crumbling into oblivion. Jacob sets about to find out which ski patrol hotshot impregnates and dumps his mother (Collette Wolfe). His goal is to keep them together for the long haul. And Lou? Let’s just say he avoids turning into the sadsack adult he was by inventing a certain thing we all use every day (hint: it rhymes

with Google). A choice like this is bound to create hilarious fallout, but the only hint of this we see are the Denver Broncos losing the 1986 AFC Championship game. Suffice it to say, this won’t be a top film on John Elway’s list. While the intricacies of time travel aren’t exceptionally borne out by this picture, it does do one spectacular job of stuffing in every single cliché of the 1980s that one movie can hold. Every character smokes, wears Day-glo colors, and has acid-washed jeans in their closets. They have big hair and jam to power ballads. Cocaine and buckets of alcohol help casual sex flow freely, with the AIDS explosion still a ways off. There is one benchmark, though, that I personally use as to whether or not a film cares to be quintessentially “’80s” and that’s t h e p re s e n c e o f “ J e s s i e ’ s G i r l ” o n i t s soundtrack. And, yes, Craig Robinson’s Nick gets his keyboarding groove on to Rick Springfield’s monster hit. Mission accomplished.

Documentary won't light your fire Film offers no new insights into the Doors By GLENN WHIPP Associated Press Tom DiCillo’s “When You’re Strange: A Film About The Doors” means to answer the more loony flights of fancy taken by Oliver Stone in his 1991 Doors biopic, but, in the process, creates a formal exercise in redundancy, offering no new insights into the much mythologized rock band. The documentary does boast unseen archival footage of Doors band members J i m M o r r i s o n , R o b b i e K r i e g e r, R a y Manzarek and John Densmore rehearsing, performing, hanging out backstage and, in the case of singer Morrison, defining, for better and worse, the rock-star template that some musicians still follow to this day. Die-hard fans will also revel in s e e i n g s e v e r a l s c e n e s f r o m “ H W Y, ” an experimental film Morrison made with friends in 1969 out in the Southern California desert. We watch The Lizard King driving and crashing a ’66 Mustang fastback, covering a dying coyote with a

the same ’60s news clips that we’ve seen a million times — JFK, MLK and RFK shot, Vietnam, civil-rights marches — to let us know that, yes, the decade was tumultuous. DiCillo constantly fudges with the timeline, though, in a pointless effort to have The Doors’ music directly comment on the major news events. I n s t e a d o f “ T h e Wo n d e r Ye a r s ” montages, the movie would have benefited enormously from new interviews with the surviving band members. Perhaps legal entanglements prevented that from happening. Densmore has successfully sued Krieger and Manzarek over the years for using the band’s name and logo in new incarnations. Undoubtedly, the trio would have had some interesting (and conflicting) things to say about The Doors’ legacy, but their thoughts might not have jibed with the kind of reductive myth-making that DiCillo seeks with his movie. Johnny Depp provides the narration, dutifully reading the bland script and

trying to lend a measure of soulfulness to the textbook-quality words. But, with all due respect to Depp’s trademark cool, the movie’s mojo rises only when the music takes over. In this regard, DiCillo does succeed in explaining why The Doors’ timeless blend of classical, blues, Eastern music and pop continues to resonate with new generations of listeners. The personality cult that has grown around Morrison’s self-styled Dionysus image has played a part in maintaining interest. As the movie notes, toward the end, fans came to the band’s infrequent concerts not for the music, but for the “spectacle.” “It didn’t seem like actual entertainment,” complains one paying customer, following The Doors’ infamous 1969 Miami concert, after which Morrison was charged with a felony count of lewd and lascivious behavior. As bogus as the charge might have been, there’s little disputing the concertgoer ’s point.

Hope from Lydia’s House Works of domestic violence victims on display By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Domestic violence is a horrible act. Everyday there is a story in the news of a child who was neglected, beaten or abandoned by a family member. The bruises and bumps may fade, but the memories, the shame and the psychological effects never go away. There is a project offered through the St. Louis Public Policy Research Center that teaches different groups photography as a way to not only take their mind away from their situation, but to give them a way of expression of their creativity. The gift of education, even in photography, allows the child to feel self-worth and value when they learn they can create. The latest installment in the University of Missouri–St. Louis’ ongoing Public Policy Research Center Photography Project features pictures taken by children living at Lydia’s House, which provides transitional housing to survivors of domestic violence. Participants who were taught photography through the UMSL project are the participants in this latest installment.

The children’s photographs make up the exhibit “PPRC Photography Project: Lydia’s House,” which will be on display at two locations. Chinyere Oteh, a PPRC Photography Project instructor, once volunteered as a college student to help sort clothes and other items at a storage facility used by Lydia’s House. This time, she had the opportunity to work directly with children who benefit from the services provided by the nonprofit organization. “In order to protect their privacy while still allowing each child to express who they are, we took a creative approach to self-portraiture by photographing their shadows, creating silhouette collages and writing poetry,” Oteh said. “The children photographed items that caught their eye in the meeting areas and rooms at Lydia’s House community center, and together they wrote a story called ‘I am Lydia’s House.’” “PPRC Photography Project: Lydia’s House” will be on display now through May 16 at the PPRC Photography Project Gallery in 427 Social Sciences and Business Building at UMSL, One University

Blvd. in St. Louis County. Gallery hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. A duplicate of each PPRC Photography Project exhibit also is displayed in a separate location. In addition to UMSL, “PPRC Photography Project: Lydia’s House” will be on display now through June 27 at Urban Eats Café and the Urban Eats Arts Collective, 3301 Meramec St. in St. Louis. Exhibit hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays. The PPRC Photography Project was modeled after the pioneering community photography programs established by artist and teacher Wendy Ewald. Several volunteer St. Louis-area community groups participate in the PPRC Photography Project each year. They learn the basics of photography and then are asked to document efforts to improve their neighborhood’s quality of life. The Public Policy Research Center ’s goal for the project is twofold: to highlight the undertakings of local organizations working toward the greater good and to inspire people to take a closer look at and get involved with their communities. The Photography Project was co-sponsored by the Public Policy Research Center at UMSL, Missouri Arts Council, National Endowment

for the Arts, Regional Arts Commission, Advertisers Printing Company, Allied Photocolor and Urban Eats Cafe. Visit http://pprc. umsl.edu or call 314-516-5273 for more information.

The Arts Artistic adventures Unique St. Louis art on display at the Arch Jefferson National Expansion Memorial will host a special exhibit from St. Louis artist Sheila Harris at the Old Courthouse now through Aug. 22. Created especially for the memorial, the exhibit consists of nearly 40 watercolor paintings of buildings that once stood on the Arch grounds. Harris’ “portraits” of buildings depict structures from several generations of the city’s architectural history illustrating how the landscape on the riverfront evolved over time. The paintings are grouped based on four historic and stylistic eras on the riverfront. In addition, each portrait will include maps showing the buildings’ original locations, architectural fragments from the buildings, interpretive text and an artist’s statement. Harris, a St. Louis native, taught art at Rosary High School for 36 years. The exhibit is curated by her sister, NiNi Harris, a local historian and the author of nine books on St. Louis history, architecture, city neighborhoods and the Gateway Arch. While the exhibit is on display at the Courthouse, Harris will disc u s s a n d d e m o n s t r a t e h e r technique during several scheduled appearances. A schedule of the appearances can be found online at www.nps.gov/jeff. NiNi Harris will also present a historical play based on the exhibit during its run. NiNi offers that the exhibit will “expand in a different media the riverfront story and bring to life the fact that there was once a wonderful collection of buildings there ranging from simple to ornate and from modest to grandiose. We have been so very fortunate in St. Louis, for we tore down a great collection of buildings, but got a great sculpture (the Gateway Arch) and landscape in their place. This is very rare in history and is one of the points I hope the exhibit will demonstrate.” This exhibit is possible due to the generous support from Jefferson National Parks Association.

Travel Travel briefs At airports, keep Art in the flesh taking those shoes off causes discomfort at — for now NYC museum ATLANTA (AP) — You’ll still have to take off your shoes when you go through airport security. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Tuesday that technology currently available doesn’t allow screeners to adequately examine what is in someone’s shoes while the person is wearing them. While that could change one day, for now the Transportation Security Administration doesn’t have plans to end the shoeremoval requirement, which was implemented after Richard Reid tried but failed to ignite a shoe bomb on a U.S.-bound transAtlantic jetliner in 2001. Napolitano spoke in a live online video chat with travelers about the Obama administration’s aviation security efforts. The 9/11 attacks and the shoe bomber incident prompted tighter security at U.S. airports, as did a failed attack this past Christmas aboard a Detroit-bound airliner. Some air travelers have raised privacy questions about the fullbody scanners that have been popping up at more airports. TSA also has increased the hand swabs that screeners are using to check passengers for traces of explosives. Napolitano said officials are focused on making the public aware of the security measures and comfortable with them. She was asked about air m a r s h a l s o n a i rc r a f t a n d t h e prohibition against people without tickets going through security and meeting arriving passengers at their gates. Napolitano said she doesn’t know if air marshals will one day be on every international flight. On the gate area issue, she said the gate is designed to be a secure area where only ticketed passengers are allowed. “It may be possible to change that as we move forward, but right now I can’t say that,” Napolitano said.

NEW YORK (AP) — A new exhibit at The Museum of Modern Art is causing discomfort among some visitors by bringing them close to nude performers — some might say too close.

Two nude performers stand inches apart in a narrow doorway of the exhibit of work by Yugoslavian-born artist Marina Abramovic, which opened on Sunday. The position of the naked pair, who alternate and are either opposite or same-sex performers, forces patrons to decide whether to walk between them. To some patrons, a brush with live

flesh was just too much to ponder. Morgan Wolfe, an 18-year-old visitor to the museum, decided not to walk between two male performers. “It bothers me a bit,” he told the New York Post in Sunday editions. The exhibit, “Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present,” presents a view of Abramovic’s career over four decades and her work in a variety of mediums, including performance

art, installations, sound pieces, video works and photographs. Besides the naked pair in the doorway, the exhibit includes a nude performer lying under a skeleton and a naked woman on a bicycle seat. Abramovic is best known for performance works in which she exposed herself to physical pain, sometimes involving audience participation.

TEST DRIVE A FORD - ENRICH A CHILD!

Hemingway’s Key West house named literary landmark KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) — Ernest Hemingway’s Key West home, where the American author lived in the 1930s, has been designated a literary landmark. Hemingway, who lived in the Spanish-colonial home with his second wife Pauline and their two sons, owned the property until his death in 1961. It became a museum honoring the Pulitzer and Nobel prize-winning author in 1964. He worked on many of his best-known manuscripts in the Key West property’s second-story writing studio. “Hemingway was probably our first and most popular writer to take residence in Key West,” said Dave Gonzales of the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum. “He lived here only nine years, but wrote 70 percent of his lifetime works in that nine-year period — the most prolific period of his life.” Among them were “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” and the Key West-based “To Have and Have Not,” Hemingway’s only novel set in the United States. “This is a recognition long overdue,” said author Les Standiford, who presented the designation.

Koetting Ford Inc. and the East Alton & Wood River Community to Raise as much as $4,500 for East Alton-Wood River High School Innovative Test-Drive Event Will Yield Much-Needed Money for Extracurricular Activities.

“Due to these economic times I felt we should get more involved with trying to help the schools in our communities,” said Marty McCabe, General Manager at Koetting Ford. “Our employees have children attending these schools and participating in extracurricular activities. It’s important that students continue to have opportunities to participate in these activities, and we’re very proud of our vehicles and would like to show them off,” said Mr. McCabe. Koetting Ford is hoping to be able to partner with every High School in the greater Metro East area to showcase the Ford vehicles and raise as much money as possible for

each High School’s programs. Ford Motor Company has a similar program called “Drive One 4 UR School” which has raised more than $2.3 million for close to 700 high schools across the country and has enabled more than 125,000 people to test drive new Ford vehicles

To participate, please visit the Koetting Ford dealership between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm on April 24th and help the East Alton-Wood River High School Band raise money for their new uniforms.

With the signs of spring come some great events, one of which is the Spring ArtWalk on Main Street in historic St. Charles, Mo. Take a drive to the art district located along the river front in historic St. Charles to the event that features juried artists housed indoors at various businesses along Main Street. This event is the “signature event” sponsored by the Saint Charles Riverfront Arts and will be offered the weekend of April 23, 24, and 25. This event was started in 2006 by the Saint Charles Riverfront Arts and is the primary venue to support the organization’s mission of growing a dynamic art district in and around Main Street in the historic district. Stroll along the the cobblestone streets, enjoy the eclectic and unique shops that the Main Street area offers, while enjoying a vast number of artists’ work in several mediums. Many of the works will be available for purchase and a number of the artists will be

around for questions. Nadine Boon, Director of Economic Development for the City of St. Charles, and President of Saint Charles Riverfront Arts, said, “The Spring ArtWalk has grown significantly over the past four years, in terms of the number of artists and businesses who participate and the public audience who comes out to St. Charles to enjoy the weekend’s activities and purchase the available works of art. It has become a big draw for local and regional artists, and presents musical performances at venues throughout the weekend,” said Boon. “This premier event in the City of St. Charles is free to the public, family-friendly and contributes to the entire St. Louis area in terms of opportunities for public cultural enrichment and the promotion of the visual and performing arts.” Some of the 2010 participating artists and information: Jack Schlueter, offering watercolors and digital painting; Paul Joseph Smith, offering abstracts in acrylic, marker, pastel and spray enamel; Margaret M. “Maggie” McCarthy, offering watercolors; Robert Lourwood, offering photography; Allison L. Family Focus Women’s shoe cycles go back for centuries NEW YORK (AP) — Flats, platforms, wedges and stilettos. Sandals, slippers, boots and clogs. Craftsmen and haute designers have been tweaking women’s footwear for centuries to reflect culture, politics and utility, but few have broken through with truly renegade reinventions. “There are adaptations, but actual world-changing innovation is a lot less common than we might want to believe,” said Elizabeth Semmelhack, senior curator of the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto. The museum collects, exhibits and interprets footwear from around the world, with 13,000 examples of early designs and styles. Many are still referenced today, from thong sandals of the ancient East to towering chopines of Renaissance Europe. Semmelhack gives credit to thinkers like Salvatore Ferragamo for his wartime cork wedges and Alexander McQueen for his 10inch lobster claws, but she points to the rise of celebrity designers themselves as perhaps the most influential development of all. “Did you even think about who made your Keds? Over the course of the 20th century, shoemakers have gone from anonymous craftsmen to fashion trendsetters,” she said. “It’s a relatively new phenomenon.”

So when, exactly, did shoes begin? No one knows precisely. R e s e a rc h e r s a t Wa s h i n g t o n University in St. Louis theorize that western Eurasians used supportive footwear nearly 30,000 years ago, based on a shortening and weakening of the bones of the smallest four toes while leg muscles remained long and strong. Simpler, more ill-fitting coverings protected feet in harsh climates about 50,000 years ago, according to other research. The oldest surviving specimens of shoes appear to be sagebrush bark strap sandals found in caves of the Northern Great Basin in Western North America that are thought to be more than 9,000 years old. Sandals haven’t changed all that much since, or from ancient times in Egypt, Greece and China. Strappy gladiator touches have never gone out of style, bejeweled thongs mimic the practice of placing precious gems on shoes for royalty and platforms in the West can be traced in an almost unbroken timeline right on through to Carmen Miranda and Lady Gaga. A surviving Spanish chopine mule with tooled leather over cork heels dates to before 1540 as one of the earliest platforms, Semmelhack said. One of the oldest depictions of people in high wooden clogs

is “oriental” servants found in stone carvings on a 12th-century church in France, according to the Bata museum’s exhibition “On a Pedestal: From Renaissance Chopines to Baroque Heels.” Even older, a wooden Japanese thong platform called a geta, with separate heel pieces, has been traced to 300 B.C.

High, narrow stilettos didn’t come into their own in the West until the 1950s, but chunkier heels detached from the front of a sole were everywhere among the upper crust in the 17th and 18th centuries. The separate high heel, Semmelhack said, “came into fashion in Europe but was worn in the Near East

before it was of any interest to Europeans.” Height has a long history p l a y e d o u t i n t h e e x t re m e i n chopines nearly 20 inches high in 16th-century Venice. “ Ve n e t i a n w o m e n w e r e actually sequestered and only put on view at certain times of the year,” Semmelhack said.

A taste of the Orient Spring cocktails with a Japanese twist By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge The patio furniture is in place, the chimena is fired up and the friends are on their way. The frogs are starting to peep in the background as the sun is setting. The cherry blossom aroma is permeating the air while the dogwood blossoms are beginning to pop. What is the finishing touch for the perfect spring evening on the patio? A springtime cocktail, maybe even with a Japanese twist. Below are some great cocktail recipes from the new book “Japanese Cocktails” by Yuri Kato and Suntory, published by Chronicle Books: Yuzu Julep 2 oz (60 ml) Yamazaki 12 Year Old 6 Fresh Mint Leaves 1 tsp (5 ml) gum syrup ½ oz (15 ml) Yuzu Juice Fresh Mint Spring for Garnish Muddle mint leaves with gum syrup in a mixing glass. Pour into a short glass with crushed ice. Add whisky and yuzu juice, garnish with a mint sprig, and serve.

Melon Cream Soda 1 oz (30 ml) Midori Melon Liqueur 1 ½ oz (45 ml) Citrus- flavored Vodka 3 oz (90 ml) Club Soda 1 Scoop Vanilla Ice Cream Melon slice for Garnish Mix all liquid in a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour into a tall glass. Top with vanilla ice cream. Garnish with melon slice. Cherry Blossom (Sakura) 2 oz (60 ml) Sake ½ tsp (2.5 ml) Umeshu 1 tsp (2.5 ml) Lemon juice Sparkling Wine Maraschino cherry for garnish Stir sake, umeshu, and lemon juice in a mixing glass with ice. Strain into a Champagne flute. Top with sparkling wine, garnish with a maraschino cherry, and serve. This Cherry Blossom cocktail is one the many drinks featured in “Japanese Cocktails” (Chronicle Books), a colorful and insightful book that explores Japan’s rich cocktail culture. Written by Yuri Kato and Suntory, “Japanese Cocktails” showcases Japan’s spirits’

history, traditions and tastes through an array of refreshing recipes, vibrant photography and alluring tales. “Japanese Cocktails” is currently available online and in book stores for $14.95. Japan has a rich history in spirits and for centuries the country’s expert mixologists have shown the world a deft hand at preparing delicious drinks. Today, this tradition is experiencing a renaissance in the form of classic cocktails that have become popular around the globe. Now, a new book by spirits expert Yuri Kato and Suntory, brings the country’s exciting spirits story to life. Brimming with unexpected and exotic combinations, “Japanese Cocktails” showcases the sophistication, adventure and cosmopolitan sparkle of the nation’s varied drinks. Spirits industry expert and publisher of CocktailTimes.com, Kato explores Japan’s cocktail heritage, collecting more than 60 recipes from classics to signature creations with a modern twist. A clear departure from classic American cocktails, the recipes feature exotic Japanese ingredients like Shichimi Togarashi Spice, Umeboshi, Yuzu fruit and Kabosu juice. In addition to unique ingredients, Japanese bartenders often use age-old mixing methods to create cocktails that many Americans might find

unconventional. From mixing tools, to ice and elaborate garnishes, the craft of the cocktail is very detailed and rooted in tradition. Most attention is often paid to the garnish, which can demand more time than the actual cocktail. Authentic recipes in chapters devoted to sake, shochu and Suntory’s Japanese whiskies allow at-home mixologists to re-create such favorites as Saké Eggnog or the Shiso Ume Mojito. Yuri’s own original creations are crafted in keeping with the spirit of Japanese cocktail culture and infused with other ingredients such as vodka, rum and tequila. New concoctions range from the Yuzu Bath and Melon Cream Soda, made with premium Midori melon liqueur, to the Bloody Mari-Chan and the Red Eye, made with Japanese beer. Yuri Kato is a beverage alcohol consultant and has been a publisher of CocktailTimes.com for more than a decade. She frequently visits distilleries and judges cocktail competitions around the world. Yuri inherited her passion for the culinary arts from her mother and uncle, both chefs, who taught her about Japanese cuisine and spirits. Yuri was born in Yokohama, Japan, and now lives in New York City and Denver. F o r m o re i n f o r m a t i o n a b o u t C h r o n i c l e B o o k s , v i s i t w w w. chroniclebooks.com.

Dining Delights Pretzel bread becomes first food fad for 2010 CHICAGO (AP) — The smell of freshly baked bread wafts through Hannah’s Bretzel, a downtown restaurant where the ovens are lined with rows of pretzel bread loaves that are sold on their own and used to make sandwiches filled with hams, cheeses and other gourmet ingredients. “It’s just soft and salty,” says customer Stephanie Klein, who ordered an Italian Parma ham sandwich on the bread during a recent lunch hour and visits about three times a month. “I’m big on a soft, good tasting bread.” Twist this: Baking experts say pretzel bread — a cousin of the ubiquitously popular crispy, salted snack — is growing in popularity, popping up on menus and in sandwich

orders from California bakeries to New York restaurants. The centuries-old chewy German bread with its doughy consistency and salted crust is “almost in that trend phase where you’re seeing it almost everywhere,” said Tom Vaccaro, senior director of baking and pastries at the Culinary Institute of America, where pretzels are taught in classes. “It offers a lot of flavor components when you eat it,” Vaccaro said. “For a lot of people it’s in that comfort food zone, meaning a lot of people as children, as kids went to fairs, went to baseball games, football games, where you had pretzels for sale.” So it wouldn’t be that much of a jump for

customers to order a pretzel bread sandwich, said Peter Reinhart, baking instructor at Johnson and Wales University in Charlotte, N.C. “It’s not something that’s so out of the box that no one’s heard of it,” Reinhart said. “We know that pretzel goes well with mustard, so it makes a good base for a sandwich.” Florian Pfahler started Hannah’s Bretzel (he says in his native Germany pretzel is spelled with a “b”) in 2004 and has two Chicago locations with plans for more. His goal is to bring pretzel bread from Germany to the United States and says he has earned a loyal following. “What I hear time and again is, ’This is a

tasty sandwich,”’ Pfahler said. “The pretzel bread tastes so good.” The restaurant also offers bragels (pretzel bagels) for morning sandwiches, pretzelshaped pretzel bread and mini baguetteshaped pretzel bread for sandwiches. Pretzel bread baking has been taken to the artisanal level at Prime Meats and Cafe Pedlar, both in Brooklyn, N.Y., where coowner and co-chef Frank Castronovo says they use a family recipe from his wife’s father. Cafe Pedlar offers pretzel braids, twists and knots. Diners can order a German white sausage served with a pretzel roll at Prime Meats. See "BREAD" on Page 22

Dining Delights Bread Continued from Page 21 “The recipe has gotten mass produced, manufactured and it came very far away from its true beginnings,” Castronovo said. “We’re doing them the way they were meant to be made.” Across the country in California, Hans Rockenwagner sells pretzel baguettes and rolls along with burgers and sandwiches made on pretzel breads at his bakeries and cafes in Los Angeles, Santa Monica and Venice.

“If it’s something you can do with pretzel bread, we do it,” Rockenwagner says. Customers are familiar with pretzels, but pretzel bread can be exotic, Rockenwagner said. His bakeries sell pretzel bread sandwiches with ingredients like cranberry sauce and turkey breast, ham with provolone and salami with parmesan, tomato, arugula and mustard. “It’s the earthiness, the softness and the chewiness of the pretzel,” Rockenwagner said. “It can hold up to all those flavors without getting lost or too soggy or overpowering.” National restaurant chains have taken notice, too. Pretzel bread is featured on the menu at more than 1,000 Blimpie restaurants in the U.S.
