Show times are Friday and Saturday evening at 8 p.m., Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Experience the ritz and allure of classic Vegas with this swinging party of a show! "The Rat Pack is Back!" transports the audience back through time and space to a balmy night circa 1960 when four show

business legends -- Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop and Dean Martin -converged at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas for the first time. These stars delivered style with substance, swing with swagger and a nonstop party to which everyone wanted access. "The Rat Pack is Back!" unites four of the country’s most accomplished singer/actors. Tom Wallek (Appearing as Joey Bishop); Drew Anthony (Appearing as Dean Martin); Kenny Jones (Appearing as Sammy Davis, Jr.) and Brian Duprey (Appearing as Frank

Sinatra). In "The Rat Pack is Back!", Frank, Sammy, Joey and Dean are back and do it “just one more time.” What ensues is an uncanny recreation of one of the Rat Pack’s raucous, antic-filled performances, featuring Bishop’s hilarious comedy and performances of such standards as Sinatra’s “You Make Me Feel So Young,” “A Foggy Day,” Martin’s “That’s Amoré” and Davis’ “Mr. Bojangles.” Backing the singers is swinging 12-piece live orchestra performing period perfect orchestrations.

Artistic adventures On the heels of their sold out 2014 tour, superstar siblings Julianne and Derek Hough will team up once again, dancing their way across stages all over the country in their new Move Live on Tour 2015. The pair stopped by Good Morning America to announce Move Live on Tour 2015 which will kick off on June 12th in Phoenix, AZ and hit over 40 cities including the Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis on Friday, July 24 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $99, $62, $52 and $42 and are available online at metrotix. com, by calling 314-534-1111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. Our goal then, and our goal

now is to have it feel like a rock concert for dance, and I think we have and certainly will accomplish that again,” said Julianne Hough. Movies

QuickGlance Movie Reviews

"Chappie"

It's set in a near-future Johannesburg policed by robots, but it's not about law enforcement or social order. It focuses on the first creation of a sentient artificial intelligence, yet it's not about the consequences of this radical invention or the nature of consciousness. Instead, though "Chappie" bears all the hallmarks of a "RoboCop" retread or a grungier "A.I." (or heaven help us, "Transcendence"), it's actually more like a warped, sci-fi version of "The Jungle Book" in which a child robot must survive the urban wilds of a gang-ridden Johannesburg. If it sounds like "Chappie" has some peculiar, crisscrossed circuitry, it most certainly does. The movie's mismatched parts — which includes possibly the most unlikely co-starring combo of all time: the South African rap duo Die Antwoord and Hugh Jackman — fit together about as well as Johnnie Five, the "Short Circuit" bot, and a blender. "Chappie" is the third feature from Blomkamp, who broke through with the alien refugee thriller "District 9" and followed that up with "Elysium," a big-budget allegory in which the 1 percent live on an orbiting space station. His dystopias aren't so unfamiliar. They marry great technological evolution with stunted social progress, organically placing sci-fi elements amid recognizable bureaucracies and urban decay. Blomkamp likes to invert tropes. Aliens come not to invade but as desperate immigrants. Robots evolve not to annihilate but to love. Both need our help. In short, Blomkamp makes action-heavy sci-fi that's animated by political ideas and frustrated urgency more than most Hollywood science fiction combined. It's deservedly won him a following, as well as the helm to the next "Alien" film. "Chappie," too, is more spirited, more bizarrely composed than most, but its oddly jumbled machinery never clicks. The logic of "Chappie" gradually disintegrates, becoming increasingly farcical. Eventually, characters are speaking lines as finely scripted as: "I have authorized the launch of the Moose." Dev Patel ("Slumdog Millionaire") plays a wide-eyed, ambitious engineer named Deon whose droids have already become the front lines of Johannesburg's police force. But he dreams of making a fully human robot, even though his boss, the CEO of a weapons company (Sigourney Weaver) shrugs that there's no money in it. A few cubicles down from him sits a rival engineer (Jackman), whose gargantuan, heavy artillery "Moose" machine has been outshined by Deon's more nimble, human-like "Scouts." "Danny Collins"

"I was the real thing once," opines Al Pacino's rock star protagonist Danny Collins in a moment of late-in-life crisis. It's true, the movie, also called "Danny Collins," opens with a 1971-set prologue where a young, "The Panic in Needle Park"era Pacino lookalike sits, trembling, for what looks like his first interview. Having just released the perfect Bob Dylan-meetsTim Buckley folk album, Danny tells the reporter that John Lennon is his real hero and worries that fame and wealth will change him as an artist. Cut to the present, and Danny Collins is a human jukebox with a stadium-sized audience of grey-haired men and women. His guitar and his soulful folk warbling have been replaced by a fake tan, shoe-polish hair, jazzy backup singers and a flashy production that's dripping with cheese as he belts out one of his biggest hits "Hey Baby Doll"— an anthem that's almost distractingly similar to "Sweet Caroline." He's not happy, though. He has fame, fortune, an infinite

supply of cocaine and shirts that only button up half way, and a fiancee who's more than half his age, but something is missing. When his longtime manager (Christopher Plummer in a prefect sidekick role) presents him with a long-lost letter from John Lennon (and Yoko), telling him that fame doesn't have to destroy a person and to call him sometime, Danny goes off in search for his essence in earnest. "The Divergent Series: Insurgent"

Given that conformity is the scourge of the "Divergent" series and much of its young-adult ilk, it's a shame that the films, including the new "Insurgent," do so little to stray from well-worn YA paths. For a series that waves the banner of individualism, they make a poor case for it. Instead of throbbing with a teenage spirit of rebellion — or things like youthful wildness, humor or sex — the two "Divergent" movies are curiously content to eke out a rigid, lifeless fable in drab futuristic environs. The answer, here, to the question of what are you rebelling against isn't "Whaddya got?" but the slightly less visceral "An elaborate, highly metaphorical dystopian system of militaristic control." But even faint, fantastical whiffs of teen insurrection carry enough potency to drive feverish young audiences. Why? Much of it has to do with the stars. Say what you will about YA movies, but they've been an efficient star-making machine that's produced Jennifer Lawrence, Kristen Stewart and Shailene Woodley. We should be happy to have them: good actresses all, who easily lead their respective films over their male counterparts. The YA men aren't as fine a bunch but here include the hunky Theo James and the excellent Miles Teller. Predictably providing "Insurgent" with its only lively, comedic moments, Teller looks as if he didn't get the note that all must be sullen and serious. A quick summary. Based on Veronica Roth's trilogy of best-selling novels, the "Divergent" films are set in a walled, post-apocalyptic Chicago, where survivors are ritualistically sorted into five factions. Every 16-year-old is tested for which faction suits them, and then must choose one and remain there forever. Tris (Woodley) chose Dauntless, who are known for their bravery and, it seems, their proclivity for train hopping. But her test revealed her to be "divergent" — someone who has no dominant characteristic but a plethora — and this makes her uncontrollable. RATED: PG-13 for "intense violence and action throughout, some sensuality, thematic elements and brief language." RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"While We're Young"

It's safe to say there aren't a lot of movies out there about reaching middle age gracefully and happily. And how could there be? The only thing worse than getting old, as the saying goes, is the alternative. But at least we have the movies — the good ones, anyway — to make us laugh about this fraught, undignified experience. And few recent films have done it better than Noah Baumbach's deliciously sharp and touching "While We're Young." It seems apt indeed that Baumbach's star here, Ben Stiller, is 49 in real life — the age at which one finally, truly cannot

deny having, SOMEHOW, reached middle age. In a minor but hilarious exchange, Stiller's 40-something character, Josh Srebnick, is told he has arthritis. Surely, Josh protests with utter guilelessness, it's not "arthritis arthritis" — it's some other kind. "It's arthritis, and usually I only say it once," the doctor replies. Josh is a documentary filmmaker who's been working on the same project for a decade, about a subject so dense and academic and boring we can't explain it here. He's married to Cornelia (Naomi Watts, doing some of her best work in years), who also works on documentaries, assisting her father, a legendary documentarian played by the wonderful Charles Grodin. You may think that's enough documentarians for one movie, but you'd be wrong: the film's dream casting also includes Adam Driver as Jamie, a 20-ish, ambitious documentarian-wannabe. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for language." RUNNING TIME: 94 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

"Get Hard"

While the stereotypes in "Get Hard" may be gross exaggerations, its characters live in the real world: A place where the chasm between rich and poor is vast and growing; where black men are disproportionately jailed and white-collar criminals often evade punishment. In this comedy from first-time director Etan Cohen, James (Will Ferrell) is a Los Angeles millionaire hedge-fund investor whose life of indulgence and ignorance is interrupted by a surprise prison sentence for fraud. He turns to the guy who runs the company car wash, Darnell (Kevin Hart) — apparently the only black person he has ever met — and asks for help to prepare for 10 years in maximum security. Darnell has no jail experience, but he agrees because he needs money to buy a home in a better school district for his little girl. When Darnell's wife, Rita (Edwina Findley Dickerson) — the film's only voice of reason — asks what he did to give the impression he had a criminal record, he replies, "I was being black." Darnell's pre-jail prep class includes transforming his student's Bel-Air mansion into a pretend prison, the household staff gleefully becoming its guards. Lessons include getting James in shape, teaching him how to fight and encouraging him to practice oral sex on men. The first yields some laughs as the 6-foot-3 Ferrell uses the diminutive Hart as a barbell. But forced sex isn't funny, no matter who's doing the forcing or the gender of the parties involved. "Get Hard" traffics in other crude humor involving more than one look at Farrell's naked tush and a tiring amount of puns on the film's title. Darnell knows one real ex-con, his cousin Russell (an ultracharismatic Tip "T.I." Harris), whom he turns to for actual help for James behind bars. James hits it off with Russell and his gangster pals when he shows them how they can "liquidate two bricks of cocaine" into hedge funds to make more money. "Wall Street, man. Those are the real criminals," one gangster says. Right. This is supposed to be a parody of the One Percent. The film is guilty of occasionally underlining its jokes like this. James even uses the phrase "teachable moment" after a heated racial encounter — and not ironically. But when Darnell misses all of James' literary references, is that satire, or is it racist and classist? RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "pervasive crude and sexual content and language, some graphic nudity, and drug material." RUNNING TIME: 99 minutes. Baumbach finds insights, laughs in aging By JOCEYLN NOVECK Associated Press It's safe to say there aren't a lot of movies out there about reaching middle age gracefully and happily. And how could there be? The only thing worse than getting old, as the saying goes, is the alternative. But at least we have the movies — the good ones, anyway — to make us laugh about this fraught, undignified experience. And few recent films have done it better than Noah Baumbach's deliciously sharp and touching "While We're Young." It seems apt indeed that Baumbach's star here, Ben Stiller, is 49 in real life — the age at which one finally, truly cannot deny

having, SOMEHOW, reached middle age. You may think

that's enough documentarians for one movie, but you'd be wrong: the film's dream casting also includes Adam Driver as Jamie, a 20-ish, ambitious documentarian-wannabe. While the Josh-Jamie dynamic will be essential to the film's ruminations on aging, "While We're Young" is also about a marriage. The wrinkle for Josh and Cornelia is that they don't have kids, at an age when babymaking — particularly in baby-centric Brooklyn — is the chief activity of all their friends. Alone at home, Josh and Cornelia speak defiantly (and unconvincingly) of the advantages of babyfree life. "We could go to Paris tomorrow if we wanted to!" she says. He agrees, while noting — with middle-aged practicality — that it would

be hard to get the best airfares at such short notice. One day, the free-spirited Jamie and his pretty wife, Darby (Amanda Seyfried), attend a class Josh is giving, introducing themselves as big fans of his previous film. Josh is flattered of course, and soon he and Cornelia are dining with the younger couple. One dinner leads to more. The older folks become intoxicated with the youngsters' free-wheeling, impossibly hip lifestyle. The details here are delicious. Darby makes artisanal ice cream, and does hip hop aerobics. For fun, the couple explores abandoned subway tunnels.

Ferrell may be past his prime By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge There was a time in Will Ferrell's career that $25 million paydays were raining down on him like leaves in the Fall. It was little more than a decade ago when he broke through in his post-SNL feature period as Frank "The Tank" in "Old School," forever cementing my appreciation for couples that spend a pretty nice Saturday at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. He followed that up by inhabiting Ron Burgundy and Ricky Bobby and Buddy the Elf, equally indelible characters that appeal to others just as strongly. If you doubt me, ask your niece. Or your pals from college. Ferrell's performances are different things to different people. I even had

a checker at Walmart once try to convince me that he was the son of Mike Farrell from "M*A*S*H," despite them having different last names. I think she was put off by his strong resemblance to Wayne Rogers and politely did not contradict her. Digression aside, Ferrell is not as relevant to comedy as he was a ten years ago, that torch has been passed onto others, and the opening of "Get Hard" this week proves it. The plot is largely ridiculous. Ferrell's hedge fund manager, James King, is framed for securities fraud and sentenced to a sentence at San Quentin that is designed to be a lesson to all white collar criminals when he turns down the plea bargain. Because the easy-going schmuck insists on his

innocence - and why shouldn't he? - he's ready to do the hardest time of his privileged life to show faith in a system he though infallible. Given a month to get his affairs in order, James hires Darnell (comic powerhouse Kevin Hart) to prepare him...to help him 'get hard'...for the prison life. Darnell is clearly the only African-American person James knows; he's the cash-strapped entrepreneur that runs his company's car-washing service. The presumption that Darnell's past surely involved some term of incarceration is not the first, and far from the only, assumption joke that happens in this movie. And you know what they say happens when you assume things, right? That's the fly in the ointment. Regardless of any

actual comedy in this picture, the only things that are going to get the attention that it doesn't need are the landslide of irreverent snipes at race and sex, especially some of its more homophobic and gratuitous tangents. White supremacy groups, Crenshaw dope gangs, angry Latinos are popular targets in a movie that talks way too much about prison rape for it to be funny (not that it was ever funny in the first place). Some of the more graphic scenes take place in the men's room of a restaurant dubbed to have L.A.'s "flirtiest brunch". Veep's stoic Matt Walsh is brilliantly cast, but squandered in this dirty sequence. Hart had been on a hot streak ("Ride Along," "The Wedding Ringer," his stand-up movies), but

April 9, 2015

I think this teaming with Ferrell is going to reverse that trend. Their easy chemistry is solid, but the work is tedious at times and weak at others. Neither is complimentary to contemporary comedy. The insulate themselves with a stable of supporting characters that are talented individuals (Craig T. Nelson, Alison Brie, T.I. Harris), but who stick out like sore thumbs in this type of feature. It's also a factor in why "Get Hard" was unexpectedly supplanted in opening at #1 at this weekend's box office by the stronger animated family film, "Home." "Get Hard" runs 120 minutes and is rated R for pervasive crude and sexual content and language, some graphic nudity, and drug material. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.

Federal commission weighs LGBT job protections

NEW YORK (AP) — The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has approved a new definition of marriage that includes gay marriage. The denomination is now the largest Protestant group to recognize same-sex marriage as Christian and allow same-sex weddings churchwide. The new definition was endorsed last year by the denomination's top legislative body as an amendment to the church constitution. The change required approval from the majority of regional bodies or presbyteries. The Covenant Network of Presbyterians says the critical vote came Tuesday from the Palisades Presbytery in New Jersey. The denomination has about 1.8 million members and 10,000 congregations nationwide. The church earlier eliminated barriers for ordaining gays, and last year, allowed ministers to preside at gay weddings with

WASHINGTON (AP) — Gay rights advocates say a federal law is needed to prohibit LGBT discrimination in the workplace, and that religious exemptions should be few. Kate Kendall, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, told the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights on Monday that the nation's "commitment to nondiscrimination trumps private prejudice." But Roger Clegg, president of the Center for Equal Opportunity, testified that "it is not necessarily immoral or irrational to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity." He said job requirements could favor the hiring of LGBT individuals in some cases and straight employees in others. Clegg said a federal ban, which it's not before the current Congress, would seek to

It’s seriously silly. It’s a party. It’s for dancing, for listening, for enjoying. It’s for adults. It’s for kids. It’s for everyone. Bones Jugs N Harmony believes music should bring joy, and they work hard to put this in every song. From the first note till the end they strive to send their joyful sound into the ears where it will quickly saturate the entire body. It’s a frenzy of frivolity, a marvel of merriment. In short, it’s just loads of fun.

Dining Delights

Bill Roseberry/The Edge

Above, fried chicken and tater tots. Below, cheesecake with a cherry topping.

Farmer's Restaurant and Bakery in Highland By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge On a recent visit to Highland I decided to check out a staple in the community there — Farmers Restaurant and Bakery. I've always heard excellent reports from friends that have visited Farmers, so I decided to check it out for myself. Located at 15 Central Blvd. in Highland, it's easy to find right on the main drag. The word on Farmers is its great family style meals and the freshly made pies are the bomb. Established in 2003 in Highland, Farmers is a third generation family owned restaurant with a big menu for patrons with big appetites. It looks like I went to the right place. But even with the gigantic number of options, I knew what I was getting before I arrived. Farmers brags about its 'famous pressurized fried chicken,' so I had to put it to the test. And of course I knew I would check out one of those delectable homemade pies at the end of my meal. First things first though, you have to start with what everybody starts with, a freshly baked yeast roll, a sweet corn muffin and the best of all, your own container of apple butter to lather on. I'm a sucker for apple butter, so this was a great start to my visit. The fried chicken options offered are a quarter or a half. Since I knew I was eating pie too, I went with the quarter, ordering mixed so I could get two legs and a wing. Chicken legs have always been my favorite. It came with a dinner salad and one side. I asked for French dressing and for my side I ordered tater tots. It all came out fairly quickly and practically right after I finished my salad my main course arrived. The

pieces of chicken weren't very big, but they had a nice golden brown cloring and thankfully weren't too greasy. Farmers marinates its chicken overnight, dusts it in its special seasoning and pressure fries it to make for a healthier option. The chicken was very juicy and the skin had a nice, crisp taste like something mom would make, not something you would find at a restaurant.

The tater tots were good too, but I don't know if I've ever had a bad tater tot. In my opinion tater tots are in the elite portion of the fried potato family and are always a treat. Now it was time to move onto the pie portion of the meal. The first thing you see when you walk into Farmers is a display case stuffed with homemade pies, ranging from cheese cake to cherry pie, apple pie, peanut butter pie, chocolate pie,

carrot cake and much more. I think Farmers should provide a bib to catch all the drool that may drip onto your shirt from perusing the scrumptious pie selections. I decided to go with the cheese cake and for good measure I had cherries scooped onto the top of it. To be honest it wasn't the best cheese cake I've ever had. It was actually a little bland, but in Farmers defense my waitress pushed me toward the chocolate pie

April 9, 2015

or the peanut butter pie and I didn't listen to her advice. I t h i n k t h e h y p e f ro m t h e aesthetics of the display case had my tastebuds ready for some magically delicious dessert I'd never had before. I kind of whipped myself into a pie frenzy. As for the atmosphere at Farmers, it's very family oriented. The dining area is large and open and very friendly for big groups. They have buffets on certain nights at Farmers also. On Thursday nights they offer a steak and shrimp buffet from 5-8 p.m. for only $11.95. There are daily dinner specials available also, along with plenty of other dinner options. Starting with the appetizer portion of the menu, there are pulled pork nachos, fried zucchini, fried pickles, a bucket of fried clams and pickled shrimp to name a few. On the soup and salad section the wild salmon salad and the filet mignon salad stand out. The blue plate specials include: chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, meatloaf, pulled pork and ribs, plus more. There's also the healthy living part of the menu with peach champagne chicken and cajun salmon oscar. Then there's grilled selections, seafood selections, pasta selections and burgers. There's a lunch menu also that includes daily lunch specials and a lunch buffet from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. You can check Farmers out online at www.dinefarmers.com. You won't break the bank eating there. I ate there for under $20 and that was with dessert. So next time you gotta eat, take the family and enjoy a good ole home cooked meal like mom would make at Farmers.

Travel

A luxury tour of the Lower Missouri River Valley By TOM UHLENBROCK For The Edge From the redesigned grounds of the Gateway Arch to the historic cellars of wine country, Dan Burkhardt has put together a fiveday tour that shows off the best of St. Louis and the last 100 miles of the lower Missouri River Valley. The tour will begin at the Four Seasons Hotel in St. Louis and visit the Missouri Botanical Garden. Dinner will be at Niche Restaurant, where the city’s most-awarded chef, Gerald Craft, prepares gourmet meals from local ingredients. Artist Bryan Haynes will be a guest at dinner. His landscape, “Magnificent Missouri,” is displayed in the Niche dining room. And that’s just the first day! Scheduled for Oct. 3-7 as autumn colors are approaching their peak, the tour will be limited to 24 people. The cost is $1,795 per person, based on double occupancy, and $2,495 for a single. Burkhardt is a retired St. Louis businessman and farmer whose passions now concentrate on promoting the beauty of the lower Missouri River Valley. His 220-acre farm in Marthasville has a 100-yearold homestead (that he and his wife Connie restored) and grand views of the river winding below. “The tour is not a moneymaker, it’s break even at best,” Burkhardt said. “We’re doing it purely to educate people about the beauty of the countryside and how we should be conserving it. “We’ve got a lot of St. Louisans who travel all over the world. I kind of want to reverse that flow. We can pair the iconic attractions in St. Louis with some of the not-quitesecrets of the nearby countryside.” Burkhardt was a friend of the late Ted Jones, who provided the early financial backing to establish the Katy Trail as a linear state park along an abandoned rail line across Missouri’s mid-section. He has continued the vision of Jones and his wife, Pat, by setting

up the Katy Land Trust, which e n c o u r a g e s p ro p e r t y o w n e r s along the Katy Trail to preserve their farms and forests from development. Any profit from the tour will go to the trust. “The tour was put together expressly to remind people how special the landscape along the Katy Trail is,” Burkhardt said. “The farms, the forests, the land – we need to conserve it.” Burkhardt recently produced a coffee-table book titled, “Missouri River Country: 100 Miles of Stories and Scenery from Hermann to the Confluence.” The work celebrates the art, food, wine and scenery of the river valley and the cultural history that began with the arrival of German immigrants in the 1830s. Three prominent Missouri artists who feature the river valley in

their works – Bryan Haynes, Billyo O’Donnell and Gary Lucy – have paintings in the book and will be special guests during the tour. “We thought that 24 people was the best size of group to have these great dinners,” Burkhardt said. “Some of the venues we’ve chosen aren’t open to the public and the settings are ideal for getting personal time with the artists.” The participants will spend two nights at the Four Seasons, among the city’s poshest hotels, and two nights at the Inn at Hermannhof. They will stay in the inn’s “haus wineries,” small stone cottages that have been relocated to a hill overlooking the historic river city and reborn as first-class lodging. “It’s luxury travel in a c o m f o r t a b l e , h i g h - e n d w a y, ” Burkhardt said. “We’d like to

offer this trip annually or to see this framework adapted to tours for lovers of jazz or art or sports or other highlights of the St. Louis region.” Here’s the itinerary for the last four days of the tour: Day Two: The Meeting of the Rivers The day will begin with breakfast at the Four Seasons, before leaving for tours of the renovation of the Arch grounds, CityGarden, Audubon Center at Riverlands, Ted and Pat Jones Confluence Point State Park and EarthDance Organic Farm School. Dinner will be on the terrace of Cielo Restaurant at the Four Seasons, which overlooks the Arch and Mississippi River. Burkhardt noted that the Arch will be celebrating its 50th birthday, and the Katy Trail will be marking 25 years. “It’s a great time to have people come to St. Louis,” he said. “Before Ted and Pat donated funding for Confluence State Park, the only way you could get to the meeting of the two great rivers was by boat or helicopter. “Now you drive there and take a short walk and visit a unique piece of geography that people don’t often get to when they visit downtown St. Louis.” Day Three: Napa Valley Quality Departing the Four Seasons, the tour will have breakfast in the Boathouse at Forest Park, and see areas built for the 1904 World’s Fair. It will continue through the Washington University campus, then head west along the Missouri River to visit the last home of Daniel Boone, and have lunch at a restored stone mill built by a Boone family member in 1820. At Augusta, the tour will visit Mount Pleasant Estates Winery and its 19th Century cellars. In 1980,

Augusta was designated the first American Viticultural Area, beating California’s Napa Valley by six months. In Washington, the guests will tour the riverfront and visit the gallery of artist Gary Lucy, before arriving at Hermann for a two-night stay. A German-themed dinner will be served at the newly restored century-old grain elevator on the Hermann riverfront. The special guests at dinner will be banker Jim Dierberg and his wife, Mary, who are responsible for the renovation of the grain elevator and other buildings that celebrate Hermann’s German heritage. The Dierbergs own Hermannhof Winery and the Inn at Hermannhof, which offers upscale lodging. “The most discriminating traveler in the country will be blown away by Dierberg’s terrific haus wineries,” Burkhardt said. “They are Napa Valley quality.” Day Four: Dinner on the Farm The day begins with a tour of Hermannhof Winery. Guests then will get a close-up look at the countryside during a short bike ride on the Katy Trail. Lunch will be at the Burkhardt’s Bethlehem Valley Farm, with a tour of the pastures, hayfields and vineyards. Artist Billyo O’Donnell will be the luncheon guest. He recently was voted into the Plein-Air Painters of America, a small group of the country’s top landscape artists. Dinner will be at the Living History Farm, a historic German farm that the Dierbergs have meticulously restored on the outskirts of Hermann. Gerald Craft of Niche will offer his culinary traditions in the spectacular country setting. Day Five will consist of a ride along the river back to St. Louis. “The guests will know that a visit to St. Louis is the Arch and the botanical garden and Forest Park and the Cardinals –but it’s also the countryside,” Burkhardt said. “Not many urban centers have this sort of agriculture and history and open space and trails within 45 minutes of downtown.” Non-refundable deposits for the tour are due by April 1, with the final payment due by May 1. The trip is arranged by Aldine Travel on behalf of the Katy Land Trust. Call 314-994-7878, extension 25, or e-mail Nancy Stein at njs@aldinetravel. com.
