For The Edge
Pictured is a scene from the one-act play, "If I Never Wake Up."
Former heroin addict telling his story One-act play to be performed at Lewis and Clark Community College By STEVE HORRELL Of The Edge
A
t the age of 34, Ty Bechel has broken free from heroin’s grip. Along the way, the Wood River High grad also stopped taking Vicodin and smoking pot, things he once used to mask his own youthful insecurities. He has been clean and sober for nearly four years now. And his new attitude is best exemplified by his favorite movie character, Rocky Balboa. “Let me tell you something you already know,” the Sylvester Stallone character says to his son in the 2006 movie “Rocky Balboa.” “The world ain’t all sunshine and roses. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently.” The key to succeeding in life, the boxer tells him, is not how hard you can hit but how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. “But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that, and that ain’t you! You’re better than that!” Now Bechel is ready to make his mark on the world, and Balboa’s fatherly advice rings true for him today. You’re the one who got yourself into trouble with drugs by making poor decisions, and the way to move forward is to make better decisions for yourself in the future. One of Bechel’s better decisions has been to write “If I Never Wake Up,” a oneact play that leans on his experience as a heroin user and addresses the harsh reality of addiction and the pain an addict and their family experience.
It premiered March 12 at the Alfresco Art Center in Granite City, and the plan now is to stage it again April 30 in a 7:30 p.m. performance at Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey. He may try it again next year as well. The play is 45 minutes. It depicts his perspective on drug addiction, and he doesn’t try to be poetic about it. He details even more of his own journey in book titled “Heroin Rising: A Tale of True Terror.” It’s set for release on April 5. The play itself was supposed to be a onetime thing. But the 114 people who showed up gave it a standing ovation, and many of them told Bechel they were surprised at how emotionally intense it was. The cast and crew also came in for praise. “It was a really cool moment to see everybody pull together for it,” he said. Bechel’s path to addiction started with marijuana. Then he began emulating his co-workers, and he mixed drugs with alcohol. Then, a year or so before he was set to graduate from LCCC, he had some dental work done. The dentist prescribed Vicodin, and it wasn’t long before he was taking the pain killers with alcohol. “When I graduated, I transferred to SIUE to work on my bachelor ’s and I was taking Vicodin all the time,” he says. “I had to withdraw. Things started getting really crazy after that.” One day, when Bechel was fairly well along in his recovery, he injured his leg on the job. On his first day at the hospital, he told workers there not to give him narcotics for the pain; if they felt it necessary to give him anything, it should be ibuprofen. But when he left the hospital, he was given a prescription for 30 Percocet tablets. Had he just been on the path to recovery, the prescription likely would have been too
much to resist. “Some people may have been able to,” he says, “but I couldn’t because once I take one I’m going to want to take them all.” Today Bechel is president of Amare, a non-profit group out of East Alton that serves as a bridge for addicts and former addicts. He would like to see changes in the way physicians prescribe opiods such as Percocet and Vicodin. “You would be amazed at how many people start off taking prescription pain medication and end up struggling with addiction from that point,” he said. For instance, following minor dental work, nothing stronger than ibuprofen should be prescribed, with an admonition to call the dentist if pain escalates after a few days, he said. There are signs that changes may be coming on the national level. On March 15, the Centers for Disease Control issued guidelines for prescribing opiods for chronic pain “excluding cancer, palliative and end-of-life care.” A news release from the CDC says the new guidelines are intended to help primary care providers ensure the safest and most effective treatment for their patients. Among the 12 recommendations are three principles for improving patient care: Nonopioid therapy is preferred for chronic pain outside of active cancer, palliative, and end-of-life care. When opioids are used, the lowest possible effective dosage should be prescribed to reduce risks of opioid use disorder and overdose. Providers should always exercise caution when prescribing opioids and monitor all patients closely. “While prescription opiods can be part of pain management, they have serious risks,”
April 14, 2016
the release says. “The new guideline aims to improve the safety of prescribing and curtail the harms associated with opiod use disorder and overdose.” Bechel encourages addicts to volunteer as they work towards gaining employment again. While the program hasn’t started yet, he has been working with the Legendary Mustang Sanctuary, in Alhambra, on a small-scale volunteer program. The non-profit organization is unique. It opened in 2011 with the idea of training mustangs from the wild “with the hope of educating the general public about the beauty and loyalty of these magnificent wild horses,” according to the group’s Facebook page. If all goes as planned, Bechel will be bringing volunteers out to the sanctuary – a licensed horse rescue – on the first and third Mondays of each month to help train the mustangs back to health. For Bechel, volunteering is a civic responsibility that helps both the volunteer and the community. “At the play, I told people that a lot of people don’t think Madison County is much,” he said. “But it’s what we’ve got; it’s our home. And I want to make it even better.” Bechel is clean, and life, he will tell you, is good. He has four kids, “an awesome fiancé,” and today he is taking classes online. Before the March 12 production of “If I Never Wake Up, just a few of the cast members knew each other. Afterward, they were laughing and sharing stories. While a lot people want to praise him for getting clean, that’s something he tries to avoid. Neither is he big on attention. “I’m big on community,” he says. “Pulling us together is my number one thing now.” The link to purchase tickets for "If I Never Wake Up" is: https://on.spingo. com/l/if_i_never_wake_up_a_drug_ awareness_play

For The Edge Clothes always tell a story. Sometimes it’s a story of craft. Priyanka Reddy combines clean minimalist shapes with the rich detailing of kalamkari, a traditional Indian fabric-dying technique. Sometimes it’s a story of inspiration. Amanda Bass channels the sinuous lines and whimsically macabre spirit of Renaissance architectural grotesques. Sometimes it’s a story of ambition. Haley Moore seeks to capture, in crisp cotton voile, an air of joyful confidence. At 7 p.m. Sunday, April 24, these stories and many more will hit the runway as part of Washington University in St. Louis’ 87th Annual Fashion Design Show. The show, which takes place at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park, will feature dozens of models wearing scores of outfits by more than 20 sophomore, junior and senior fashion design students. “I think the audience is going to see some great design,” said Jennifer Ingram, lecturer in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, who directs the show. “But as a program, we’re also very interested in research and interdisciplinary learning. We have ready-to-wear, but we also have experimental, conceptual and sculptural pieces that really push the boundaries.” For example, students in Laura Baker’s experimental fashion design class have explored connections between fashion and studio art. In Chandler Ahrens’ “Performance Enhancing” class, fashion and architectural students teamed up to investigate unusual materials — such as acrylic, silicon and even wood — as well as cutting-edge
methods of digital fabrication. Meanwhile, pattern-making students, in a nod to the show’s host, have created dresses inspired by the exhibition “Little Black Dress: From Mourning to Night,” which highlights the Missouri History
Museum’s world-renowned textile collection. “We really wanted to showcase the breadth of the fashion design program,” Ingram said. “It’s going to be great to see how everything translates on the runway.”
Organizers and co-sponsors The 87th Annual Fashion Show is chaired by Susan Sanders Block of The Designing Block. Stylists are led by Dominic Bertani of the Dominic Michael Salon. Makeup is by Randi Davis.
Outstanding student designers receive a variety of scholarships, cash prizes and awards. The Dominic Michael Silver Scissors Designer of the Year Award is presented to one outstanding senior at the end of the evening. Block, who has helped organize the show for 22 years, sponsors the Silver Ripper Award, presented to one outstanding junior. Tania BeasleyJolly will present the Saks Fifth Avenue Honorary Designer Award. Tickets are $100 for front-row “designer reserved” seating, which includes admission to the preshow reception at 6 p.m., or $50 for general admission (i.e. second- and third-row seating). Standing-room tickets are $25 (and free for the first 90 Washington University students). Tickets are available through the Edison Theatre Box Office at 314935-6543 or online at edison.wustl. edu. The Missouri History Museum is located at 5700 Lindell Blvd., near the intersection with DeBaliviere Place. For more information, email samfoxschool@wustl.edu.

Much more information is available at our web site: tourdestooges.org The Tour de Stooges is sponsored by Gateway East Trails, a non-profit group dedicated to bringing bicycle and walking trails to eastern St. Clair County. The ride is dedicated to the memory of Roger Kramer, a founder of the ride and as Knucklehead-in-Chief, the force that kept it going for 15 years. For more information about Gateway East Trails, visit us online at gatewayeasttrails.org or e-mail info@gatewayeasttrails.org. For more information about the Tour De Stooges, our history and ride details, call (618) 960-3452 or visit our web site at tourdestooges. org. History of the Tour de Stooges 1996 Co-founders Roger Kramer and Ken Kibort developed the idea for Tour de Stooges while marking routes for another ride in the St. Louis area. McKendree College agreed to be the host for the ride. 1997
The first Tour de Stooges drew about 150 riders. The five routes were 9, 13, 19, 39 and 63 miles. The films were shown in McKendree's old gymnasium. T-shirts are offered. 1998 About 250 people attended the ride. The films were moved inside Ames Hall, where the allyou-can-eat brunch buffet is served. 1999 Attendance for the ride fell, partly because Roger Kramer, now the sole ride coordinator of the ride, tried to organize the ride while living in North Carolina. The ride was cancelled for 2000 because we were unable to maintain the quality of the event. 2000 Roger Kramer moved back to Southwestern Illinois and decided to revive the ride in 2001. 2001 The ride resumed with about 125 people in attendance. Tour de Stooges launches its first website in an effort to build interest in the ride. 2002 Attendance for Tour de Stooges increased by 40 percent. 2003 Tour de Stooges used online registration for
the first time through Active.com; 25 people took advantage of the service. Online registration led to the first significant influx of riders from outside the St. Louis area. The current routes of 13, 19, 30, 42 and 63 miles were instituted. About 250 people attended the ride, another increase of 40 percent. 2004 By popular demand from participants in the 2003 ride, particularly from people outside the St. Louis area, T-shirts are offered. Online registration continued to take hold as 60 people used Active.com to sign up for the ride. Cold, damp and windy weather held attendance to about 150 people. Fresh fruit was served at the rest stops for the first time. 2005 Nearly 500 people attended the Tour de Stooges, and 126 people signed up online through Active.com. 2006 More than 500 people from 15 states — Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, Arkansas, Kentucky, Connecticut, Colorado, Hawaii, Maryland, Tennessee and Washington — rode the Tour de Stooges. About 240 people signed up for the ride online. 2007
April 14, 2016
Tour de Stooges celebrated its 10th anniversary, and about 700 people attended the ride. This would be the final time that McKendree, which changed its name to McKendree University in July 2007, would host the ride. 2008 The Tour de Stooges moved to Lindendale Park in Highland, Ill. About 550 people attended the ride on a chilly, windy day with winds ranging from 15 to 25 mph. 2009 Despite forecasts calling for up to an 80 percent chance of rain, 375 cyclists ignored the forecast and were rewarded with partly cloudy skies, no rain and little wind! 2010 Even with competition from two other major St. Louis-area rides, the Tour de Stooges drew more than 450 cyclists in its third year in Highland. 2011 The Tour de Stooges was presented by the Belleville Area Bicycling and Eating Society-St. Louis Cycling Club. About 450 people attended the ride. 2012 With the help of 633 cyclists, the Tour de Stooges celebrated its 15th anniversary and its 5th year in Highland. The 633 participants were the second-largest crowd in Tour de Stooges history. 2013 Following the passing of Tour de Stooges founder Roger Kramer in late 2012, the Tour celebrated its 16th anniversary and 6th year in Highland. There were about 400 participants. 2014 The Tour de Stooges decided to regroup in 2014 and in place of a ride held a grand picnic to celebrate its 17th year at the park in Highland as the organization pondered the future of the ride. It was decided to seek out a new sponsor and the Ridge Prairie Trailhead Initiative was approached by the Tour de Stooges leadership and asked if they would assume sponsorship of the ride. Lebanon based RPTI accepted and made the decision to move the ride back to its roots in Lebanon for 2015. 2016 RPTI changed its name to Gateway East Trails (GET) to better reflect its mission and purpose. GET decided to add a 100 mile route to the existing route to give long distance riders another option to consider.

App offers summer fun suggestions
“What should my kids do this summer? is the question on all parents’ minds this time of year for those with school-aged children. Luckily, not knowing what’s available or finding out about a camp once it’s full are no longer worries for local parents thanks to the free Web and mobile app Blueprint4SummerSTL. The app makes summer in St. Louis productive for children and stress-free for parents. The resource is accessible from anywhere on any device at http://blueprint4summer.com. Blueprint4SummerSTL first launched in February 2015 and quickly became the go-to resource for St. Louis-area parents seeking educational, engaging and fun activities for their children during the summer months. By aggregating information about area programs, Blueprint4SummerSTL gives all parents access to local summer offerings. New this year, Blueprint4SummerSTL will help even more families find camps by expanding in scope, including parts of Illinois, and listing more camps within St. Louis City and County, St. Charles County and Jefferson County. Blueprint4SummerSTL is spearheaded by Maxine Clark, CEO of the Clark-Fox Family Foundation and founder of Build-A-Bear Workshop. Clark intends to keeps last year ’s momentum going and anticipates the app being parents’ No. 1 resource as it continues to expand in reach this year. “In our first year of operation, Blueprint4SummerSTL presented more than 3,500 local summer camps and activities in an easyto-use platform that was accessed by parents all across the greater S t . L o u i s a re a , s a i d C l a r k . “Blueprint4SummerSTL is the most robust program information database – and best of all it’s completely free for all families to use. As the app grows its footprint, our goal is to make sure all children have equal opportunity to enroll in these important and impactful summer programs. Using the app, a parent or guardian can quickly find programs and resources that may work for the needs of their family and each individual child. Activities can be searched based on any number of preferences such as age, gender, interests, cost and zip code – even special considerations such as sessions for special needs students
or gifted students, those offering before and after care, or that have scholarships available. The app provides information about day camps, sleep-away camps and sports camps; art, music and science programs; and academic enrichment courses in STEM. “There were 72,000 searches on Blueprint4SummerSTL in its first year, and 64 percent of users chose highly personalized, targeted searches with four or more criteria, said Programs Manager Allie Cicotte. “That’s how we know just how valuable this app is for parents. Blueprint4SummerSTL is the only summer camp database that allows users to generate highly personalized, granular search results based on multiple criteria. C u r re n t l y m o re t h a n 2 , 5 0 0 summer sessions are already listed, and the database is growing daily as enrollment periods begin and more organizations learn about the Blueprint4SummerSTL app. The app also offers summer programs the opportunity to easily submit their camps for free. An organizer can simply create a free account on Blueprint4SummerSTL and then send an email to allie@ b l u e p r i n t 4 s u m m e r. c o m w i t h
the name of the camp they are representing. Blueprint4SummerSTL will link the account, allowing the organizer to edit, update and add new program information Tasmyn Front, executive director at Challenger Learning Center in Ferguson, Mo., said attendance levels at their 2015 summer camps spiked thanks to the free exposure offered by Blueprint4SummerSTL. “The Challenger Learning Center benefitted tremendously from Blueprint4SummerSTL. As a result of their marketing outreach through schools and media, we have seen an increase in the number of families contacting us to find out about our programs and enroll their children, said Front. “Summer activities are a crucial part of intellectual development that enable children to spend their vacation time constructively, develop their passions and creativity, advance their learning and, of course, have fun, said Clark. “Blueprint4SummerSTL truly is a blueprint that parents can use to build an enriching summer for kids and a less stressful planning cycle for themselves. Blueprint4SummerSTL was made possible by the generous support of a wide variety of financial and business

Museum to offer unique look into the life of Abraham Lincoln For The Edge
A
new exhibit opening April 15 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum will give visitors intimate glimpses into Lincoln’s family, career, finances and presidency. The “Unfinished Work” exhibit features documents and artifacts from the immense Taper collection. Among them: • A promissory note in which Lincoln promised to pay $379.82, an amount he called “my national debt.” • His patent for a mechanism to get stranded riverboats off of obstructions. No other U.S. president has held a patent. • His beloved stepmother’s “X” signature on a receipt. • A gorgeously illustrated copy of the Emancipation Proclamation. • A ticket to his funeral at the White House. The exhibit takes its name from the Gettysburg Address, in which Lincoln

described the “unfinished work” of bringing freedom to the nation. The name refers both to Lincoln’s life being cut short and to the mission of ensuring that these and other irreplaceable artifacts find a permanent home at the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation has raised almost $14 million in in-kind and financial support for the Permanent Home Campaign, which has some $11 million remaining to be raised until its completion. “Unfinished Work” runs April 15 to May 15. Most of the exhibit's items on display are underwritten by generous donors; others remain available for sponsorship. “This exhibit is important not only because of the historic documents and artifacts it showcases, but also because in very quiet and understated ways it honors the generous individuals who underwrote each item to ensure they all have a permanent home at the Lincoln Presidential Library,” said Dr. Carla Knorowski, chief executive officer of

“The lives of everyone around Lincoln were made more poignant by association. His elders, his friends, his colleagues, his loved ones – we learn about Lincoln by learning about them and vice-versa,” said James M. Religion Religion brief Justices seem to seek compromise in birth control case
WASHINGTON (AP) — A seemingly divided Supreme Court is exploring a possible compromise ruling in the dispute between faith-based groups and the Obama administration over birth control. The justices issued an unusual order Tuesday directing both sides in the case to file a new round of legal briefs by April 20. They're being asked to examine the minimum that groups like the Little Sisters of the Poor must do to register their religious objections to providing contraceptive coverage. The court suggested that they could tell their insurance company at the time they arrange for health insurance that they don't want to include some or all contraceptive coverage. Armed with that knowledge, the insurer would notify people covered by the health plan that contraceptive coverage would come directly from the insurer, with no money from or involvement by the nonprofit's health plan. Attorneys for the groups say that shows the court recognizes that "the government's current scheme forces them to violate their religion."
Conservative groups say governor betrayed faithful
ATLANTA (AP) —Conservative groups in Georgia say Gov. Nathan Deal's veto of a "religious freedom" bill shows he has turned his back on people of faith.
R e p re s e n t a t i v e s o f t h e G e o rg i a B a p t i s t M i s s i o n Board, the Faith and Freedom Coalition and others said Tuesday they won't give up on passing legislation in future years. A portion of the bill vetoed Monday lets people claiming their religious freedoms have been burdened by state or local laws force governments to prove there's a "compelling" state interest overriding their beliefs. Supporters say more than 30 states have similar laws. Republican state Sen. Marty Harbin of Tyrone also called on House and Senate leadership to demand a special session in response to Deal's veto, joining two other senators. Legislative leaders have given no sign they will do that.
North Carolina AG applauds Georgia governor's veto
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina's Democratic attorney general is commending Georgia's Republican governor for vetoing a bill that critics have called discriminatory. Attorney General Roy Cooper said at a news conference Tuesday that Gov. Nathan Deal "stepped up" on Monday when he rejected a "religious freedom" bill. Cooper said Deal recognized the negative economic impact it would have Georgia if he signed the legislation. Many corporations have spoken out against the bill in Georgia and a new law in North Carolina that prevents local

Former Kentucky priest who viewed child porn going to prison
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A former Catholic priest accused of snapping hundreds of inappropriate pictures of students at his parish school is heading to federal prison for nearly three years. Stephen Pohl wasn't charged with any crime for taking the photos, since the children in his pictures were clothed. But he was found guilty of a charge of looking at child pornography on his computer. The 57-year-old former pastor of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church was sentenced Tuesday in federal court in Louisville to 33 months. Police seized his computer during an investigation that started after a student told his parents he felt "weird" about some photos that Pohl had taken. The U.S. Attorney's office says it is in the process of identifying the students in Pohl's photos, and their parents will be contacted.

Anthony Hamilton Surviving the test of time, Anthony Hamilton will soon gift his fans with yet another compilation baring his heart a n d s o u l . M i l l i o n s a c ro s s t h e globe have bought his albums, falling deeply in love with raw, passionate notes that tell a story
so familiar that it belongs to us all. His new album, “What I’m Feelin’, merges a life-long journey with a musical evolution that never once sacrifices his roots. With seven widely released albums paving the way, the new project stays true to his core yet e x p l o re s t h e d e p t h s o f w h e re this gifted voice can flow. His first single “Amen, produced by Salaam Remi and James Poyser, celebrates the beauty of a woman in true Anthony style. “It’s not just about her physical attributes, he noted. “It’s about appreciating everything she brings to the table from going to work, cooking for you, praying for y o u , a n d l o v i n g y o u f ro m a n authentic place. And it’s his authenticity and honest depiction of the average man’s woes that keep the audience searching for him year after year. Another track
f r o m t h e n e w a l b u m , “ Wa l k in my Shoes, reminds us that no one is immune to mistakes, trials, and defeats. His vocals perfectly convey a pain so deep, that the song leaves little room for misinterpretation. Although his voice belongs to the world having worked with icons like D’Angelo and 2Pac, his vocals still serve as North Carolina’s soundtrack. Even in the presence of longstanding, global celebration, h u m i l i t y re m a i n s h i s g re a t e s t asset. “It means so much that people are still seeking me after so many years without an album coming out, he shared. “They could have moved on. In the five-year span between his last album “Back to Love and “What I’m Feelin’, Anthony released his first holiday album and even made a guest appearance on the Fox hit show EMPIRE, one of the highest rated episodes of the season.

Tuning in Boston to appear in St. Charles
Tom Scholz’s band Boston became an iconic classic rock fixture when they joined the music scene with their self-titled album in 1976. With over 17 million copies sold, Boston generated hits such as "More Than a Feeling," "Peace of Mind," and "Smokin'," rock staples that are still in heavy rotation today. Their second album, Don't Look Back was another chart-topper that confirmed their place in rock history, followed by Third Stage, which hit #1 on the charts, with the top single of 1986, "Amanda." With over 31 million albums sold to date, Boston has stood the test of time, as evidenced by live audiences that span generations. Boston will appear with Blue Oyster Cult on June 3 at the Family Arena in St. Charles. Tickets can be purchased at the Family Arena Ticket Office or online at www.metrotix.com. Fans can expect to hear all the classic songs they have grown to love, and will be treated to some new additions to their set list based on recent requests. Guests will be treated to wild Hammond organ work, soaring harmony guitars, and exceptional vocal arrangements, as well as Boston’s unique visual stage presentation and plenty of extra-
terrestrial sounds heard nowhere else on Earth. For over four decades, Blue Ă–yster Cult has been thrilling fans of intelligent hard rock worldwide with powerful albums loaded with classic songs. Indeed, the Long Island, NY-based band is revered within the hard rock and heavy metal scene for its pioneering work. Blue Ă–yster Cult occupies a unique place in rock history because it's one of very few hard rock/heavy metal bands to earn both genuine mainstream critical acclaim as well as commercial success.
Sheldon to welcome Joe Pug
Austin, TX singer songwriter Joe Pug’s rise has been as improbable as it has been impressive. After dropping out of college and taking on work as a carpenter in Chicago, he got his musical start by providing CDs for his fans to pass along to their friends. This led to a string of sold out shows and a record deal with Nashville indie Lightning Rod Records (Jason Isbell, Billy Joe Shaver). As he toured behind Messenger (2010) and The Great Despiser (2012) it was with a band that looked as much like a jazz trio as an Americana band. The following years would have them on the road for over four
hundred shows, including stops at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and The Newport Folk Festival. His latest, critically acclaimed album, Windfall, released in 2015, was praised by Rolling Stone with,"...it showcases the singer's unique and achingly honest point of view that spins lyrics into folk poetry." Joe Pug with special guest is scheduled April 27, 2016 at 8 p.m. at the Sheldon Concert Hall. Tickets are $22 reserved seating. Call MetroTix at 314-534-1111 or visit TheSheldon.org.

QuickGlance Movie Reviews
"The Divergent Series: Allegiant"
In "Allegiant," the latest installment of "The Divergent Series" (three out of four), dystopian Chicago might be in disarray, but it's also become as dull as our heroine Tris' shapeless, grey Abnegation frocks from the first pic. Unless the filmmakers really try to shake things up for the next and final film, this series might just end up being as forgettable as those duds, too. And really, this is where things should start getting interesting and urgent. The faction system fell in the last one, "Insurgent," also directed by Robert Schwentke, and with it all of those senseless names — Abnegation, Candor, Dauntless, etc. Now they're trying to start a new society, but, it turns out Evelyn (Naomi Watts) and her band of punk rock factionless revolutionaries didn't exactly have a theory of governance in place when they decided to storm Chicago. So, she begins with probably the worst possible decision — killing off many of those who were loyal to the fallen leader Jeanine (who was played by Kate Winslet). This leads to a rift with Octavia Spencer's Johanna, and they go to war. But that's all a side show to the exploits of Shailene Woodley's Tris and Theo James' Four who decide to escape the city along with a few others (Zoe Kravitz, Miles Teller, Maggie Q, and Ansel Elgort). In the last movie, Tris learned that there was life outside of the walls and they resolve to find out what that means with all the casualness of a couple of urbanites deciding to try out that new brunch spot two neighborhoods over. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "intense violence and action, thematic elements, and some partial nudity." RUNNING TIME: 121 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.
'Miracles From Heaven'
The rise of the so-called "faith-based film" — typically lowbudget films that are almost uniformly evangelical — has occurred largely in a bubble of its own like a sheltering harbor for Christian believers at that heathen meeting place: the multiplex. "Miracles From Heaven," a film whose title even Hallmark would blush at, is an attempt to expand the reach of the faithbased film a little beyond the flock. To do so, it has armed itself with two things: the star power of Jennifer Garner and a full barrage of sentimentality. The fate of a sick 10-year-old girl precariously hangs in the balance. The film, directed by Patricia Riggen ("The 33"), is adapted from the memoir of Christy Beam, whose Texas family is jolted when one of their three daughters, Anna (played sweetly by Kylie Rogers), is found to suffer from a rare disorder that leaves her chronically unable to digest food. "Based on real events," is how the film presents itself, and some of its best qualities are in depicting elements of life — the frightful anxiety of parenthood, the struggle to find meaning amid hardship — that don't often make it into the movies. But the course of "Miracles From Heaven" is never in doubt. When Garner as Beam intones in the opening voiceover questions of where miracles come from, the film's title has already stated the answer. Just as certainly will it turn out well in the end for Christy, who strays from her faith while watching her daughter's belly painfully swell, and Anna, whose health deteriorates while the family desperately searches for a knowing doctor. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "thematic material, including accident and medical images." RUNNING TIME: 109 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

On the Edge of the Weekend
"My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2"
Ever been to a wedding where you don't know anyone very well? It's pretty deadly, no matter how good the food or the band might be. Everyone's laughing really hard at jokes you don't find funny, or even understand. On the other hand, if you know and love everyone, you'll have fun even if the champagne is flat and the canapes soggy. And that, dear moviegoer, is about as deep as we need to go in analyzing "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2," an overstuffed, under-achieving sequel that took more than a decade to come to the screen. If you've been dying for a reunion with those aggressively lovable folks known as the Portokalos family, maybe you'll be happy. But if you didn't miss them that much or, maybe didn't even know them in the first place, stay away from this wedding. Send a gift and call it a day. The fact that the film took 14 years to arrive —Nia Vardalos is again the star and writer — is both a blessing and a curse. It may have stoked huge interest — the original was a ginormous sleeper hit — but it also implies that we're about to see something worth the wait. Instead, the script is a tired pastiche of what seem like the same gags we heard the first time. Greek families are big and affectionate! Greek families get involved in each other's business! Greek families smother you with love! And so on. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America "for some suggestive material." RUNNING TIME: 94 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.
"Batman v Superman"
Zac Snyder's thundering and grim "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" offers the kind of blunt, mano-a-mano faceoff usually reserved for Predators, Godzillas and presidential candidates. And just as has often been said of this election year, "Batman v Superman" takes a once almost charming tradition and plunges it into the gutter. Long gone are the telephone booths, corn fields or any other such tokens of innocence. And given the prevailing climate, Snyder may have judged the rock'emsock'em moment wisely. Gentlemen, keep your fists up and your capes neatly tucked. "Batman v Superman," as heavy and humorless as a Supreme Court decision, is an 18-wheeler of a movie lumbering through a fallen world. It hurtles not with the kinetic momentum of "Mad Max: Fury Road" nor the comparatively spry skip of a Marvel movie, but with an operatic grandeur it sometimes earns and often doesn't. This is "Paradise Lost" for superheroes. It twists and grinds two of the most classic comic heroes, wringing new, less altruistic emotions out of them until their dashing smiles turn to angry grimaces. After a handsome, impressionistic montage of Batman's iconic childhood, the film picks up where Snyder's Superman reboot "Man of Steel" left off but from a different perspective. Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) is driving through the falling debris of Metropolis while Superman (Henry Cavill) careens carelessly above. Snyder has channeled the backlash over the high death-toll finale into Wayne, who bitterly watches Superman from the dust-filled air on the ground — a cheap evocation of Sept. 11 designed to add solemnity where there isn't any. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "intense sequences of violence and action throughout, and some sensuality." RUNNING TIME: 151 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Everybody Wants Some!!"
"Everybody Wants Some!!" is Richard Linklater's selfdescribed spiritual sequel to "Dazed and Confused," and, somewhat miraculously, the spirit has remained intact. It's been 13 years from one to the other: long enough to literally watch a boy grow up. But between the '70s highschool graduation of "Dazed" and the first college days of the 1980-set "Everybody Wants Some!!" it feels like hardly a summer has passed. We left off with Foghat's "Slow Ride"; we pick up with the Knack's "My Sharona." The song's thumping bass, which opens the film, is an early signal (if the double exclamation points didn't already give it away) of the exuberance to come in "Everybody Wants Some!!," Linklater's marvelously loose and affectionately antic portrait of college life. It's a chapter that Linklater's "Boyhood" never got to. But it's rendered here with the same attention to the rhythms of youth and the in-between moments the director has long been drawn to. But unlike "Boyhood," it also has bong hits, disco dancing and sex — lots of it. It's a laid back "Animal House," with shots of philosophy mixed in. Jake Bradford (Blake Jenner) is a freshman baseball pitcher who arrives in September 1980 at Southeast Texas University, where he moves in with his future teammates and fraternity brothers. Bros are not the most loved of college types, but Linklater's frat guys, aside from being competitive, womanizing boozehounds, are mostly clever, curious and likable. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language throughout, sexual content, drug use and some nudity." RUNNING TIME: Running time: 151 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"Miles Ahead"
"Miles Ahead," an ambitious, experimental biopic about jazz legend Miles Davis, actually states its mission twice over the course of the movie. Basically: "If you're going to tell a story, come with some attitude. Don't make it all corny." The person saying it is Miles Davis, played by Don Cheadle, who also co-wrote and directed. In the context of the film, he's speaking to a fictional music writer named Dave Braden (Ewan McGregor), who has conned, charmed and strong-armed his way into Miles' orbit for a few days in hopes of writing a comeback story that would end the eccentric musician's half decade of dormancy. While a little on the nose to be repeated, it's a good line, and an even better goal in the murky and generally unrewarding territory of the dreaded biopic — especially for someone as elusive, multifaceted and just downright giant as Miles Davis was. As Cheadle's Miles cheekily says to Dave in that whispered rasp, "I was born, I moved to New York, met some cats, made some music, did some dope, made some more music, then you showed up at my house." The story jumps from the past to the present very suddenly, employing an interesting visual technique that links the two moments in time through a character, let's say, falling in the present and another continuing the motion in the past. It's a unique take on the fluidity and imprecision of memory, but, more precisely it's indicative of Cheadle's ambitions to make the film feel as unpredictable and freestyle as Miles' jazz. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong language throughout, drug use, some sexuality/nudity and brief violence." RUNNING TIME: 100 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

Bros are not the most loved of college types, but Linklater's
frat guys, aside from being competitive, womanizing boozehounds, are mostly clever, curious and likable. Just as with "Dazed," Linklater has assembled a strong ensemble of young, promising actors. They include the mustachioed star senior Glenn (Tyler Hoechlin), the philosophizing chatterbox Finn (a tremendous Glen Powell) and the bearded stoner transfer from California, Willoughby (Wyatt Russell). Jake easily and confidently joins them as they bounce from nightclub to nightclub, and prowl the parking lots for women. There isn't much tension in the mild and innocent "Everybody Wants Some!!" (nor is there any political correctness or sexual assault). The guys of the movie are all eagerness and appetite, with their
lives ahead of them. Though the team is nationally ranked and they take their sport seriously, professional baseball is largely an acknowledged pipe dream. Besides, there's so much more to be excited about. Every night is a different club (disco, country line dancing, punk). Books and records are passed around like joints. A countdown to the start of classes runs throughout, but not in a foreboding way. Out of the aimlessness, a sense of purpose is growing. The world is opening up to Jake, who begins dating a theater student (Zoey Deutch). By focusing on baseball players, Linklater has given a far tenderer, more dynamic (and largely true) picture of young male athletes than they are usually afforded.
"Eye in the Sky" just a bit lacking By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge There was a time not that long ago when modern warfare films were de rigueur and American audiences tossed them off with little fanfare. I can't blame them. By the times movies like "Rendition" and The "Kingdom" were coming out in 2007, we'd already been buoyed down in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq for many years. The honeymoon period of going after the 9/11 terrorists had runs its course and Americans were losing patience with the seemingly endless string of military deaths in roadside bombings every month coming from sandy countries most of us will never visit. Adoration for the men and women serving has never flagged - giving us the greatest
success of this genre like "American Sniper" and "Lone Survivor" - and that's fair criticism of our foreign policy through a lens of popular culture, your politics aside. But now, another decade and two Presidential terms later, little has changed on the surface of another generation's entangled imbroglios abroad. That's why seeing a new film such as "Eye in the Sky" that gives it a differing perspective is such a fresh treat, even when it's strengths are rooted purely in its cinematic divergence. Five points of view converge in "Eye in the Sky" to coordinate a drone strike in Somalia where a meeting of most wanted fugitives are gathering to put together the final deployment stages of an East African suicide bombing. In fact, if you want to see the entirety of the
film's most action-packed sequences, simply watch the trailer from upstart Bleecker Street Films. This is my most significant detracting point from the movie. Instead, I enjoyed most the casting of the five teams and how well they played together while clearly never sharing a soundstage. As the central figure, British Colonel Katherine Powell (Helen Mirren) crams herself into a baggy camouflage uniform and runs the lead from a dim bunker below a RAF base in Surrey. She's stern and commanding and has invested more into the operation through personal want to stop a traitorous British national. She works with an intelligence officer in Honolulu (Kim Engelbrecht) and a series of brass (the late Alan Rickman making his final live performance before being heard in May's "Alice Through
the Looking Glass") and politicos (Richard McCabe, Jeremy Northam, Monica Dolan, Iain Glen) in London. Together, they analyze, re-analyze, and seek out legal justifications for committing to the attack. The boots on the ground include Oscar nominee Barkhad Abdi as a surveillance operative. These forces are all at the behest of the mission specialist (Phoebe Fox) and drone pilot (Aaron Paul) in Las Vegas who will be responsible for releasing the Hellfire missile. The movie is a tight little picture that quick cuts between offices and on-location sets nicely. The real crux of the plot is the interplay between Paul and Mirren over the best time to fire the missile as it relates to the proximity of a darling little girl (Aisha Takow) selling bread just outside the targeted

compound. Casualty figures and collateral damage estimates give her between a 45% - 75% chance of being wounded or killed depending on the location of the explosion and the impact against the suicide vest explosives already in the house. It's really a brutal shock to see it finally happen in the movie's last act, even after a slow and thrilling burn leading up to it. It's also a strange comment on how we can structure the plot of a movie into a very disjointed story that comes together adequately. It's technically a good movie, just not quite right for anyone looking for a night of entertainment. "Eye in the Sky" runs 102 minutes and is rated R for some violent images and language. I give this film two stars out of four.

Cory Hollerbach and her mother, Robin Springer, both SIUE alumni, have opened Art Gecko Creative Studio, in downtown O’Fallon, Ill.
Art Gecko Creative Studio opens in downtown O’Fallon For The Edge The Illinois Metro East Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is celebrating along with its clients, a motherdaughter team who has opened a creative studio in downtown O’Fallon, Ill. Art Gecko Creative Studio, 125 East State Street, is the brainchild of retired art teacher Robin Springer and her daughter and fellow designer, Cory Hollerbach, both SIUE alumni. Their new business is the culmination of a dream for the duo that has already shared a lifetime’s worth of creative, artistic expression. The studio officially opened its doors on Monday, April 4. A ribbon cutting by the O’Fallon-Shiloh Chamber of Commerce is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 7. “I grew up with an artist,” said Hollerbach. “My passion, and my mom’s too, is to show others how to express themselves through art. Our studio offers classes and opportunities for all levels of abilities. Our greatest joy is assisting those who have thought they were never any good at art, and then are amazed when they see the beauty they’ve just created in our studio.” Mother and daughter teamed up to feature

their hand-painted boxes for an O’Fallon High School craft fair last November. The two enjoyed combining talents so much, said Springer, that the retired art teacher and the stay-at-home mom decided to launch a business to instruct and encourage others’ artistic talents as well. The pair praises the generosity of time and business expertise given to them from SBDC Director Patrick McKeehan. “Patrick provided us with an outline from which we generated our business plan document,” Hollerbach said. “His assistance was essential to our launch. He thoroughly explained the process of starting a business and helped us work through it and progress to the point where we were ready to open. Patrick’s phenomenal expertise came to us at no cost, which is incredible. We’re extremely thankful to him and the SBDC for being a huge resource.” According to McKeehan, the feeling was mutual. “I always enjoy working with the ‘creative’ entrepreneurs, especially those willing to share their artistic talents with others,” said McKeehan. “Businesses like Art Gecko build a sense of community and add to our region’s quality of life.” Art Gecko Creative Studio’s mission, Hollerbach said, is to encourage children and

adults to experience art in a fun, creative way. Springer agrees. “Everyone has an art spirit within them,” she said. “They just need to tap into it and try.” Classes at Art Gecko Creative Studio include: basic drawing, basic painting, printmaking and mixed media. The studio’s owners say they hope to attract the home schooling community as a creative outlet to fulfill art requirements. In addition to formal instruction, the studio welcomes all ages for a menu of social offerings such one-hour Mommy and Me morning art classes, a junior art club for ages 8-13, an adult art class and more. Art history and art culture are also taught. For more information on the new studio, visit www.artgeckostudio.org, find the studio on Facebook or call (618) 206-6222. It is a no-cost service to the region funded, in part, by the SBA, Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunities, and SIUE. By aiding entrepreneurs and companies in defining their path to success, the Illinois SBDC Network positively impacts the

It enhances the region’s economic interests by providing no-cost, one-stop assistance to individuals by means of counseling, connections, research and resources to small businesses. When appropriate, the SBDC strives to affiliate its ties to the region to support the goals and objectives of both the SIUE School of Business and the University at large.
