Huneke now getting his kicks in real estate Local man remodels St. Louis Street home By ANN NICCUM Of The Edge Edwardsville’s Sean Huneke has more than just soccer in his blood. The EHS and SIUE graduate comes from a long line a soccer players. His dad, Ed Huneke, was the soccer coach at SIUE for more than 20 years, while Sean along with his brother Justin and his uncle Denny Hunek e w e re a l s o a l l p l a y e r s f o r t h e Cougars. But it turns out the family has another love, something Sean has a gift for ,too – real estate. Sean said his family has been in the real estate business in St. Louis since the 1970s. “I come from a family in the business of 40-plus years,” Sean said. Sean said his mom and dad helped run the business. “My grandmother, Angela Huneke, and uncle Dennis are also a part of the business too,” Sean said. “My grandmother really inspired me to be in real estate,” he said. Sean, now a sales associate at Bev George, has been working on a few special projects on the side. Projects like rehabbing homes and then selling them. Sean’s latest project is 905 St. Louis St. “The single-family home had been converted into a duplex. I am converting it into a single-family home again,” Sean said. “And keeping the charm and the characteristics with the street.” Sean, who lives just off the street on C h a r l e s , s a i d t h e s t re e t i s o n e o f h i s favorites in the community. “I have always been a big fan of this street,” Sean said. He said this home, located in the heart of this historic district, captured his eye. Sean said the house has been in disrepair for some time and he wanted to bring it back to life. As a duplex, Sean said the home was split and home mostly to students. “This is a single family neighborhood and a historic home," he said. Sean said the home dates back to the early 1900s. According to the Madison County Historical Society, a Mrs. Kenley lived in the home in 1907 and then a Dr. H.E. Wharff, a nose and throat specialist,

Sean said the charming home had lost its way over time. Most recently, he said the paint was chipping off the exterior and it had become abandoned. “I wanted to fix it up and put it back to the way it was supposed to be,” Sean said. “Keeping the charm with the rest of the street and preserving the neighborhood.” So Sean jumped on a chance to renovate it when the opportunity introduced itself. Sean said he is now currently completing the home’s renovation and putting on the

finishing touches. On the outside, there is a new coat of paint on the home, landscaping and a fresh rock driveway and back porch will be finished soon. Inside the home, Sean said he tried to keep the historic look while modernizing. The home has all new air conditioning, furnace, windows, electrical, plumbing, etc. and high-end appliances and fixtures, such as stainless steel appliances, granite counter tops, new flooring and Kohler fixtures. Sean said the historic home still has its character throughout with the original

window frames, trim and molding. In addition, Sean said he tried to keep the historic look by using antique-styled modern fixtures and flooring, such as hand-scraped hardwood. “ We w a n t e d t o k e e p c h a r a c t e r a n d modernize,” Sean said. “Old look, but efficient and effective.” The home is almost ready for sale now. Sean said the public is invited to come visit the home from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 28. Sean said he also plans to make a donation to the St. Louis Street Association once the home sells.

People People planner Cahokia’s Jarrot Mansion to celebrate 200th birthday The oldest brick building in Illinois and the St. Louis region is having a 200th birthday this spring, and everyone is invited on select days to take a rare tour of the structure in Cahokia, Illinois. Special tours for individuals, groups and schools are being offered to recognize the 200th anniversary of the Nicholas Jarrot Mansion State Historic Site. The tours may be scheduled on the hour from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 29; Friday, April 30; Thursday, May 6; and Friday, May 7. Advance reservations for the 45-minutes guided tours are required and may be made by calling (618) 332-1782. The Jarrot Mansion will be open to the public, with no reservations required, on Saturday, May 1 and Saturday, May 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. These tour opportunities provide a rare opportunity for the public to view this 1810 structure, and offers unique an insight into the original paint schemes and wallpaper designs that are being carefully duplicated in the house, including the second floor ballroom. The interior is so intact that Nicholas Jarrot would find his home familiar today. The ongoing restoration of Illinois’ oldest brick building, the stunning interior finishes project, and the behind-the-scenes detective work that has gone into the project will be featured during tours. The Jarrot Mansion, completed in 1810 by native Frenchman and entrepreneur Nicholas Jarrot, was built in the Federal style, and the imposing two-story mansion stands in stark contrast to the traditional French colonial timber buildings prominent in early Cahokia. The Mansion is a reflection of the owner ’s regional importance. In 1803, Jarrot, a fur trader and land speculator, befriended the explorers Lewis and Clark, and Jarrot was instrumental in helping them establish their winter quarters on land he owned on the Cahokia f ro n t i e r. The Mansion was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2001. The Jarrot Mansion, administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation

SUPPORT THOUSANDS OF NEW JOBS AND UNIVERSITY TOWN CENTER University Town Center will create 11,000 jobs during construction and 8,000 fulltime jobs once complete. As the Illinois unemployment rate climbs to its highest rate since 1983 and tops 12% in the metro-east, the time for University Town Center is now! University Town Center: Entertainment and Tourist Destination and Economic Engine Planned for the intersection of I-270 and Route 157 and Route 162 in Glen Carbon, IL, University Town Center will include a mix of destination and entertainment businesses and office and retail space. It will complement existing businesses and local communities by drawing millions of new visitors to the region. Once complete, UTC would generate approximately $2 million in annual revenue for the Levee District.

For communities and local businesses to benefit from these dollars, the Illinois General Assembly must pass legislation authorizing STAR Bonds.

Several healthy herbs will be available, including the 2010 Herb of the Year: dill. Three different varieties of dill will be offered at this year ’s Herb Days including Hercules, Bouquet, and Fernleaf. “Dill is delicious in summer recipes like potato salad, and tea made from steeping dill seeds promotes digestion,” said Paulette Bliss with the St. Louis Herb Society. “Dill is also a goodplant to encourage swallow tail butterfly caterpillars, so it’s a good idea to plant extra for the butterflies.”

There are a number of dill recipes available in the St. Louis Herb Society’s award-winning cookbook “Herbal Cookery: From the Kitchens and Gardens of the St. Louis Herb Society,” available for purchase in the Garden Gate Shop at the Missouri Botanical Garden. “Herbal Cookery,” is the winner of the 2009 Gourmand World Cookbook Award for Best Fundraising Book and features recipes that use familiar and notso-familiar herbs. If you’re interested in cooking with herbs, the Missouri Botanical Garden is offering a class on “Growing and Using Herbs,”

Thursday, May 17 from 9:30 am to noon at the William T. Kemper Center for Home Gardening. The St. Louis Herb Society will give the very best instructions on how to grow herbs in St. Louis. Learn how to propagate, transplant, grow, and use some favorite culinary herbs. Sample herbal delights and receive starter herbs to take home. The class is $35 for Garden members and $40 for non-members. For more information or to register visit www.mobot.org/classes. The St. Louis Herb Society is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1941, “to further the use and knowledge of herbs.” Its members have planned, planted and maintained the herb garden behind historical Tower Grove House – Missouri Botanical Garden founder Henry Shaw’s home – on the grounds for over 40 years.

Guitar giant brings hot licks to The Fox By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Arguably one of the ‘70s best guitarists would have to be Jeff Beck. Born in England, Beck brought his guitar talents to the United States and was one of three noted guitarists to play in “The Yardbirds.” The other two were Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. Ranked as number 14 in Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” Beck has earned his ranking. He has received the Grammy Award five times for “Best Rock Instrumental Performance.” He had two hit albums as a solo act, and has appeared on albums by Roger Waters, Stevie Wonder, Les Paul, Zucchero, Cyndi Lauper, Brian May and ZZ Top. KETC Channel 9 and Fox Concerts will be welcoming guitarist Jeff Beck at the Fabulous Fox Theatre on Thursday, April 29, at 8 p.m. with special guest Gary Hoey. Tickets are on sale now and prices are $50, $45, and $40 with a limited number of Gold Circle seats also available. All prices are subject to change. Accompanying Beck on the “Emotion and Commotion Tour,” will be a brand new touring band, including the Grammy award winning producer and songwriter, Narada Michael Walden on drums, Rhonda Smith on bass and Jason Rebello on keyboards. Narada Michael Smith has collaborated with Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Tom Jones. Narada was also featured on and composed four tracks for Beck’s classic 1976 album “Wired.” The compelling Rhonda Smith has played bass for Beyonce, Justin Timberlake and Prince, while keyboardist Jason Rebello has performed previously with Beck, as well as Sting and Chaka Khan. “I’m thrilled to be working with Narada Michael Walden, he’s an inspiration to me,” Beck said. “When we last worked together we won a Grammy. I’ve been lucky enough to have been working with Jason since 2006 and Rhonda came highly recommended by Narada; I was blown away when I heard her play.”

For The Edge

Jeff Beck Beck’s newest album “Emotion and Commotion” was released April 13. The album is his first studio album in seven years and it will offer an eclectic mix of tracks including two songs with Grammy-winner Joss Stone on vocals and several tracks with orchestral accompaniment. For Beck, the new album and tour follow in the wake of a triumphant 2009 - his most successful year ever. Among the many highlights were a sold-out world tour; his second induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; the release of the

platinum-selling “Performing This Week... Live At Ronnie Scott’s,” which won a Grammy for his breath-taking live performance of “A Day In The Life,” and magnificent performances with his band at the 25th Anniversary Concert of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden and a Tribute to Les Paul at the Grammys. Special guest, Gary Hoey, is a world renowned rock guitarist whose new album “Utopia” is due out this spring. With a collection

of 16 albums and five top-20 Billboard hits, it’s no wonder Gary Hoey is listed as one of the top 100 guitarists of all time. Whether it’s rock, blues, surf or Christmas, Hoey’s command of each style makes his live show one of the most exciting on the circuit today. Tickets for Jeff Beck with special guest Gary Hoey are on sale now at the Fox Theatre box office and all MetroTix locations. To charge by phone call MetroTix at 314-5341111 or online at www.metrotix. com.

Thrice will appear at The Pageant in St. Louis on April 23. Vocalist Dustin Kensrue shares his excitement about the upcoming trek by saying, “We’ve only gotten to hang out [with Manchester Orchestra] in passing, so we’re excited to get out on the road with them. They’re a great band and one of the few out there that I feel an affinity with in more ways than one.” Thrice’s sixth and latest studio album, Beggars, is one of their most favorably reviewed records yet and earned them the #5 spot on Alternative Press’ “Best Albums of 2009” list. The band is also known to consistently deliver a great live show, and OC Weekly named their Nov 25 date at House of Blues Anaheim in their “Top 10 Orange County Concerts of 2009.” Additionally, the OC Music Awards nominated Thrice for Best Album, Best Alternative, and Best Rock. Just as with their ambitious Vagrant debut The Alchemy Index, Thrice recorded Beggars in their own studio in Orange County, while guitarist Teppei Teranishi produced the effort. Thrice spent the latter half of 2009 on select dates of the Vans Warped Tour, followed by a cross-country tour of US last November. Thrice is Dustin Kensrue - vocals/ guitar, Teppei Teranishi – guitar/ piano, Edward Breckenridge – bass, and Riley Breckenridge – drums.

Anita M. Reising, D. C. Chiropractic is one of the largest alternative health care systems. There are no shortcuts, replacements, or alternatives to a chiropractic adjustment. Exercising, using electrical current, heating pads, pills, etc., though may be beneficial at times, will never replace the vertebral chiropractic adjustment which is meant to improve function and relieve nerve interference to the body, its organs and muscles. A vertebrae not in its normal functioning position may eventually affect the muscles, nerves and internal organs. After a thorough health history, examination of the neuromuscular system, and x-rays if needed, chiropractic care, gentle enough for a baby and effective enough for a “husky” person, is what a patient receives in this office. Additional therapies may be warranted and offered. A patient receives nothing less than what they need and sold nothing more.

Through the years, patients have learned that the sooner one calls the less likely the condition worsens and becomes more difficult to relieve. Second City cast members Brooke Bagnall and Seth Weitberg.

Second City set to invade the Touhill Chicago’s legendary comedy theatre The Second City will make a stop in St. Louis as part of its 50th Anniversary Tour. The group will play the Touhill Performing Arts Center April 30 and May 1 for three performances. Show times in the E. Desmond & Mary Ann Lee Theater are Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Drawing from the vast archives of material, the touring company produces a two-act review of The Second City’s celebrated brand of topical sketch comedy, hilarious songs and on-the-spot improvisation that changes with every performance. Founded in Chicago in 1959, The Second City has become the premier training ground for the comedy world’s best and brightest. Some of The Second City’s alumni include: Alan Arkin, Harold Ramis, John Belushi, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, John Candy, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Chris Farley, Jane Lynch, Mike Myers, Jack McBrayer, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Jason Sudekis and Steve Carrell. Just a few short years after The Second City launched, the theatre formed touring companies that began performing all over North America at theatres, clubs, colleges and performing arts centers. This became the model for developing the comedic talent that would grace the Chicago and Toronto resident stages of The Second City and often onto movies and television shows like Saturday Night Live. The Second City touring company not only provides audiences the chance to see stars in the making, but also an incredibly memorable evening of comedy. No topic or subject matter is off limits for The Second City. Tickets for The Second City are $35. They are available now at the Touhill Performing Arts Center Ticket Office; online at www.touhill.org; or by phone at 314-516-4949.

Touhill Performing Arts Center opened its doors in September 2003. The $52 million facility designed by Pei Cobb Freed and Partners, features the 1,625-seat Anheuser-Busch Performance Hall and the 350-seat E. Desmond and Mary Ann Lee Theater. The not-for-profit Center is the jewel of the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus and is the first impetus and focal point for creating an arts district for students at the University.

The Arts Artistic adventures Dance St. Louis plans 45th season Dance St. Louis will open its 45th season of bringing great dance of the world to St. Louis in October with one of America’s premier ballet companies, Houston Ballet, and will close the following August with the 2009 Tony Award-winning Best Musical, Billy Elliot the Musical. “Through the year we will journey to emotions only dance can bring, with each performance from a company admired all over the world,” said Michael Uthoff, Dance St. Louis artistic & executive director. Dance St. Louis’ 2010-11 season opens October 8 and 9 at the Touhill Performing Arts Center when, as part of the first-ever American Arts Experience–St. Louis, Houston Ballet brings an intimate program of sweet and playful classical dances by George Balanchine, Houston Artistic Director Stanton Welch, and Houston Associate Choreographer Christopher Bruce. The holiday season kicks off at the Fox Theatre on December 2-5 with The Joffrey Ballet in Nutcracker at the Fox, combining dancing of “exceptional fire and exuberance” (Chicago SunTimes), Tchaikovsky’s evergreen score played live by the Ballet Orchestra of St. Louis, luscious Victorian sets and costumes, and performances by young St. Louisarea singers and dancers. Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet comes to St. Louis for the first time at the Touhill on January 28 and 29. In just seven years, this New York-based troupe of 16 international dancers has vaulted into the front ranks with its cuttingedge repertory from Europe’s most daring choreographers. On March 11 and 12, the monumental Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to the Fox on March 11 and 12 for a mixed program blending modern dance and African American spirit, climaxed by the celebration of 50 years of its signature masterwork, Revelations. On March 25-27, the Fox explodes with the ever-popular international percussion sensation STOMP, co-presented by the U.S. Bank Broadway Series. On April 8 and 9, the Touhill blossoms into phantasmagoric visions of Mother Nature with MOMIX in Botanica. On May 26, 27 and 28, Dance St. Louis and the Touhill co-present SPRING TO DANCE FESTIVAL 2011, the fourth annual Memorial Day Weekend extravaganza of 30 dance companies from across the Midwest and beyond, for three completely different programs over three nights at only $10 per night. The season concludes on August 10-28 at the Fox Theatre with Billy Elliot the Musical, co-presented with the U.S. Bank Broadway Series. Travel Travel briefs Gtrot site helps globetrotters coordinate plans Wa n t t o k e e p t r a c k o f y o u r friends on spring break or any other time of year? A new Web site started by college students aims to make it easier. Wi t h G t ro t — h t t p : / / w w w. gtrot.com/ — you can use Facebook to check out where your friends are headed and broadcast your own travel plans. Gtrot also links with travel booking sites like Kayak.com to help you hop onto your friend’s flight. And t h ro u g h G t ro t , y o u c a n s e e a map of where your friends have been, to pick up tips on a city you might be planning to tour. Of course, your friends have to be registered on Gtrot and Facebook for all this to happen. But if you’re a college student heading to Cancun or Panama City, Fla., chances are they’re on Facebook already. Gtrot just takes things one step further, said Zachary Smith, one of the site’s young co-founders. “Being college students ourselves, we saw the need for a more integrative kind of travel experience,” said Smith. “We’re the target audience.” He noted that any highly mobile person on Facebook will find Gtrot handy, even if it’s just to share a cab to the airport. “Any social context in travel is helpful,” Smith said. “We hope to expand to recent graduates under 30.” Gtrot (a shortened version of “globetrotter”) doesn’t require registration; users log in through their Facebook account. The site asks users for their current location, but also has privacy

settings if you want to hide the fact that you’re not at home. “Especially during major academic holidays, when thousands of students leave the same campus for similar destinations, our cab- and ridesharing tools will help travelers save money and reduce the environmental impact of their trips,” said Robert Corty, another G t r o t c o - f o u n d e r, i n a p re s s release. “It’s all part of our goal of making travel easier, cheaper, and way more social.”

Chile’s struggling fishermen offer tsunami tours SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Weeks after a tsunami destroyed their livelihoods, some of Chile’s struggling independent fishermen are offering boat tours of the devastation. Sergio Rodriguez, a boat captain in the port city of Ta l c a h u a n o , 3 0 0 m i l e s ( 5 0 0 kilometers) south of the capital, S a n t i a g o , f o u n d t o u r i s t s w e re eager to pay $3 for half-hour boat trips around the battered bay. The idea began as “a semisarcastic way of inviting people for a cruise and showing them what has happened,” Rodriguez told the local news program 24 Horas on Wednesday. In the past t w o w e e k s , h e h a s s o l d m o re than 600 tickets for his halfdozen daily tours. Some neighbors expressed dismay at how he turned tragedy into opportunity. “I don’t like to see people taking photos or anything, because it hurts me to see Talcahuano this way,” said one

woman not identified by 24 Horas. For thousands of out-of-work fishermen, though, there are few other opportunities to earn a living. Port authorities have only just begun to lift dozens of stranded

fishing boats out of the streets and return the 50-ton vessels to the sea. An estimated 1,000 small-scale f i s h i n g b o a t s w e re d e s t ro y e d when the tsunami slammed them against the coastline after the Feb. 27 earthquake.

T h o s e t h a t re m a i n e d i n t a c t have struggled to unload their catch given the devastation of the area’s piers and processing facilities. Rodriguez says boat tours are his best chance to “keep some cash in Talcahuano.”

Travel Travel briefs Darwin exhibit coming to St. Louis Science Center

Hard Rock plans smaller Atlantic City casino

S T. L O U I S ( A P ) — A n e x h i b i t o n naturalist Charles Darwin, whose theory of evolution revolutionized biology, will open next month in St. Louis. The Saint Louis Science Center said Wednesday the exhibition will open April 17 and run through Aug. 1. It is free to all museum visitors. “Darwin” was organized by the American Museum of Natural History in collaboration with other institutions, including the Natural History Museum in London. Charles Darwin lived from 1809 to 1882. His work changed notions about the origin and nature of the human and other species, and launched modern biological science. The exhibition explores his life and his theory.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Drawn by the possibility of entering the nation’s secondlargest gambling market at a discount price, Hard Rock International announced plans Tuesday to build a $300 million casino-hotel on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. The Florida-based company would partner with New York-based Och-Ziff Real Estate at the southern end of the city, at the foot of the Black Horse Pike, one of three main entranceways to Atlantic City. Hard Rock said it has not yet determined how many hotel rooms it would build. Hard Rock, which operates 13 casinos around the world, said it supports a bill introduced Monday in New Jersey’s legislature that would permit new casinos with as few as 200 rooms, down from the current 500-room minimum. “We are intrigued by the newly proposed legislation, which makes entering the

marketplace more manageable,” said company chairman Jim Allen. “Despite current headwinds, Atlantic City remains the country’s second-largest gaming market and would be an exciting location for a Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.” Hard Rock International is wholly owned by the Seminole Indian tribe of Florida. The company said its project would include “an ultramodern gaming floor, luxury hotel, world-class dining and entertainment,” a beachfront pool and a spa. It said it would cost at least $300 million to build the complex on largely vacant land that it still needs to buy. On Monday, state Sen. James Whelan, a former Atlantic City mayor, introduced a bill designed to make it easier to build smaller casinos. He said the struggling resort city desperately needs new gambling outlets, but the $1 billion to $1.5 billion cost of megacasinos is making building them all but impossible. Atlantic City’s newest and most successful

casinos each have about 2,000 rooms — part of a strategy of exceeding the minimum requirements to dominate the market. So far the strategy has worked. The Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, Harrah’s Atlantic City, and the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort each have about 2,000 rooms and are routinely among the leaders in revenue each month. But another $1 billion mega-casino project known as “Revel” has sat unfinished for more than two years and needs new financing before it can be completed. Operators of the smaller casinos would pay a higher tax rate — more than 14 percent, compared with just over 9 percent for casinos that had to build larger hotels to get licensed. Many of the existing casinos oppose lowering the minimum requirements, arguing it would be unfair to let newcomers get into the market with a smaller investment than the established casinos had to make. But Harrah’s Entertainment Inc., the largest casino owner in Atlantic City with four properties, is keeping an open mind.

Today’s high school seniors have so many prom-dress choices, from one-shoulder cocktail dresses to gowns that sparkle with sequins. Many of the styles take inspiration from designer dresses worn by such celebrities as Jennifer Aniston, Taylor Swift and Alicia Keys but without the expensive pricetags. Remember Sandra Bullock’s stunning Bottega Veneta purple princess gown at the recent Golden Globes? JCPenney has a similar style by Jump Apparel, $200, and David’s Bridal has a short version for $99. If you adored actress Freida Pinto in a blush-colored Oscar de la Renta dress at the British Academy Film Awards in 2009, the blush trend continues this year. Designer Nicole Miller, for example, has a short sheath dress in a metallic dusty pink, $420, at nordstrom.com. “The most important fashion trend for any occasion is to choose a look that makes you feel incredible,” said Karolyn Wangstad, vice president of trend for JCPenney. “For prom, find a dress that accentuates your personality. Elegance always wins.” Wangstad said shiny, either with sequins or metallic fabric, is big this year. Other trends include dresses with corset or bustier details, ones in bright colors and jeweled details. “Strapless dresses are a trendright style for prom,” added David Hacker, vice president of trend and color for Kohl’s. “Accessorize a solid-color dress with a statement necklace, strappy heels and an embellished clutch to glam up.” David’s Bridal prom-style

expert Sinead Kasch said trends run the spectrum from bows and ruffles to asymmetrical and cutout styles. Accessories are also crucial, including bold, chunky bracelets and peep-toe stilettos. David’s Bridal is one of the few companies offering a wide range of sizes. Prom dresses are available in sizes 0 to 26, with its Prom Plus Collection in sizes 14W to 24W, both online and in stores. Most dresses are $99 to $299. If you’re searching online, Amazon.com has created a “prom shop,” offering $10 off with $50 purchase on designer dresses, including ABS, Jessica Simpson, Rampage, Necessary Objects, XOXO, Trixxi, My Michelle, Teeze Me and more, through May 6. F o r g u y s , A l ’ s F o r m a l We a r continues to be a go-to source to rent fashionable looks. This year, the store has mailed out thousands of $30-off prom gift cards and also offers affordable rentals. PROM FASHION TRENDS Dresses • Just about every style of dress is in style. The standouts: Bejeweled necklines, bows, ruffles, one-shouldered, multicolored, sequined, princess and ’80s-inspired. Jewelry • Go for a statement necklace if it works with the dress: Or try oversize earrings and a cuff or a stack of bracelets. Hair clips • Add a girly touch: Feminine hair accessories include feathers and clips with stones.

Family Focus The gloves are off – polish your nails for spring NEW YORK (AP) – The gloves are off. And what will you see on those hands that have been hibernating during the winter? Probably some brittle nails and dry skin. A heavy-duty moisturizer and bold, cheerful nail polish should be able to take care of any unpleasantries. Then throw in some spring trends — purples, oranges and greens to accompany warmweather wardrobes, as well as some new neutrals that might surprise you. “The day of the nude or pink nail is over and we’re seeing a new revolution in color,” says Nancy Rappaport, director of product development for Sephora Collection. “Spr i n g s t a r t s w i t h l o t s o f bright shades,” agrees Suzi WeissFischmann, OPI’s artistic director. “It’s not only pinks, it’s bright shades from green to blue, purple and orange. Now the color story just goes on year round.” Inspired by the landscape of Hong Kong, Weiss-Fischmann dubbed a shimmery plum called Meet Me on the Star Ferry and a medium blue named Suzi Says Feng Shui. There’s also Jade is the New Black. The seasonal palette for the Sephora by OPI collection includes dark moss and forest green, with the additions of orange and turquoise for summer. Essie’s Cosmetics has the bold Pop Art Pink and Tart Deco, a coral. “The whole spring palette works together to bring a burst of artinspired color to the wardrobe,” says founder Essie Weingarten. “Spring 2010 is romantic and soft but still bold and statement-making.” Many polishes are metallic or contain glitter, pearl or high shimmer to keep them modern and more dimensional than the oldschool frosts. Lavender is a top color, too, which Weiss-Fischman says can be “feminine and demure.” The darker end of that spectrum — dark purple or eggplant, perhaps — can give you an edge, says Allure magazine’s editorial projects director, Kristin Perrotta. “These feel so right for spring because they’re just so wrong — so dark,” she says. “But they’re really gorgeous, and they do a nice job of quieting down all the happy, girlie dresses and fabric colors women typically wear come spring.” If head-turning colors aren’t your thing, try your hand in one of the new neutrals, which Perotta even calls the “blah colors.” These beiges, grays and taupes aren’t boring, and they’re part of a trend that will last well into fall. Perotta credits Chanel with launching this look with its shade called Particuliere. The “greige” shade debuted on the runway in October, and since going on sale in January, the company says it is its top-selling polish and has sold out three times on Chanel.com.

April 15, 2010

“It’s not a color I ever thought I could like, but it looks really beautiful on, and works with a variety of skin tones,” Perrotta says. B e f o re t h e p o l i s h g o e s o n , make sure hands and nails are in top shape. Tools include a nailand hand-specific moisturizer, which tends to be heavier than body lotions, and an exfoliating brush, says Dr. Wilma Bergfeld, a dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic, an academic medical center. “Most people think it’s their face that presents to the world but it’s everything that shows. The key is to take care of your face and remember to take care of your hands and nails.” Wi n t e r ’ s i n d o o r h e a t e d a i r dehydrates skin and nails. The body also produces fewer natural oils in the cold weather, Bergfeld explains, and hot showers and exposure to cold and wind exacerbates the dryness. This all can leave nails looking dry and lusterless, scaly or flaky and prone to breakage. The good news is the looming onset of humidity. “Most women will tell you their

nails break in the winter,” says Bergfeld. “As the weather gets more humid and warmer, the nails do better because they’re hydrated.” “Your nails take a beating in everything you do,” she adds. Dead skin can be sloughed off by getting a manicure or pedicure, or by using a brush at home, Bergfeld says. Anything you put on your nails — polish, tips, hardeners — are also very drying. You might consider giving your nails a literal breather without product for even a few

months if they don’t look healthy, Bergfeld says. J u s t d o n ’ t f o rg e t t h e d a i l y saturation of moisturizer. To keep cuticles at bay, Bergfeld recommends moistening them with a cuticle softener before clipping. Better yet, resist clipping, instead gently push them back with a towel or wooden cuticle stick after moistening them in the shower or with a cuticle softener. Do not push back or clip dry cuticles, which can damage the cuticle and nail. And, before going outside, apply

sunscreen to your hands, Bergfeld recommends. Though it’s the fingers that apply it to the rest of the body, be sure to rub some on your hands and nails, as the skin under the nail can suffer sun damage. If you’re lucky enough to take a vacation and want your polish looking good without chips for the duration, a gel lacquer, such as OPI’s Axxium Soak-Off Gel Lacquer, tends to last longer than traditional polish. It’s available only in salons, is painted on with a brush and is cured under UV lights.

Family Focus

Ice cream or frozen custard? The family battle continues By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge A divisional wedge has entered my family’s dynamic. This wedge is so big and such a strong factor that it has caused shouting matches, stubborn stomps and defiant trips in opposite directions when a compromise could not be reached. Rarely is a compromise reached. The continuing saga of whether to go to a place that serves ice cream or frozen custard has caused an alarming division in our household. OK, maybe that is a bit dramatic, but at the moment that the sweet tooth hits and one of us has our mind and heart set on what we want, it seems like the most important cause for battle. Although I can eat either ice cream or custard, my husband will most times only opt for ice cream. The ice cream facility that he likes to frequent just does not have the certain flavors, along with the toasted and salted pecans I so cherish. So there are times that I dig my heels in, hard enough that I go one way and he goes the other. The kids are on their own to choose whose car to jump into before the squealing of the tires. This area of Madison County is not lacking in good stopping grounds for good frozen custard or great ice cream – both soft-serve and hand dipped. There are people who stand by their calendars, marking off the days until their favorite seasonal shops open, in order to be one of the first in line to fill in that three or four month missing craving. Annie’s Frozen Custard, located at 245 South Buchanan in Edwardsville, has been a favorite of this area, opening up on Feb. 28, 2010 for their 14th season. Not only does Annie’s employ a number of youth in the area, but they participate in a number of community projects, like allowing the “Habitat for Humanity” team to use their lot in order to display the playhouse that goes up for raffle each year. Annie’s has a number of delicious flavors including white chocolate, lemon, brownie batter, cheesecake, cake batter, strawberry and so many more. Who can turn down a cup of Carrot Cake Concrete? There is a variety of shakes, sundaes and cones also for your custard eating pleasure. For your next birthday party or special event, don’t forget about Annie’s custard pies and cakes. Annie’s also sells hot dogs, 100 percent all-beef gourmet franks. Make it a combo with chips and a soda and then top it off with your favorite custard. For information on Annie’s, visit www. anniesfrozencustard.com.

For soft-serve ice cream, along with a number of other yummy treats, there is a local favorite, Northside Dairy Haven. Ask anyone from the area where to get a good ice cream cone and you will likely get the answer “out at Northside.” Located at 1902 North Main St. – near the intersection of Route 159 and Route 143, in Edwardsville, Northside Dairy Haven has been pleasing ice cream connoisseurs for many decades. Whether it is a cone, a shake, a banana split or a sundae, the flavors are all there along with a great price to go with it. There is an expansive food menu also, so consider stopping off for a summer evening dinner and then your favorite ice cream treat. Bobby’s Frozen Custard, located off Route

159 in Maryville, has just opened to celebrate their 20th season. Bobby’s Turtle is a fan favorite, along with many other specialty concretes. Those savory roasted and salted pecans on top of hot fudge and carmel can hardly be beat. You can choose a cone, a shake or a sundae if you like, and can have either original, low fat lite or low carb custard. Bobby’s has expanded their menu in the past years to include other wonderful confections. Maybe a chocolate and pecan dipped rice crisp treat, or chocolate covered strawberries are what you crave. Don’t forget to check in at Bobby’s about mid-August and through the fall to pick up your gourmet carmel apple that is either plain or rolled in

those fabulous pecans. Bobby’s has also added live music during the summer for their diners listening pleasure. They have given local talent a stage by offering an “open-mic” night from time to time. Keep an eye on their Web site to get the complete calendar of acts coming to Bobby’s stage. Visit www.bobbysfrozencustard.com for more information or sign up for the “Turtle Club.” I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my husband’s favorite, Dairy Queen. DQ has been around for many, many years and has gone from being known as the small town ice cream stop to a fast food chain, selling burgers, chicken, fries, and more along with their vast ice cream selections. The beloved Blizzard is a real favorite for many “real” ice cream lovers. Whether you add your favorite candy, fruit or nuts, the Blizzard is still one to please. You can’t beat a good twist cone, and dipped in chocolate shell is even better. Not many places still offer a dipped cone, but you can still get one at most area Dairy Queens. There is a Dairy Queen in Edwardsville, one in Glen Carbon and one in Troy. Whichever is closest to you, stop by for a treat of some real ice cream. www.dairyqueen.com. Don’t forget Culver ’s either if you are looking for a good frozen custard. Culver’s is very accommodating to mix up whichever flavor you like and in any size you like. Their candy selection is expansive and they also have a number of specialty selections. Their waffle cone is a fantastic edible container for some good rich custard. Maybe have them sprinkle on a few gummy bears next time! Of course they also offer an large lunch and dinner menu that you can start off your visit with, or who says you can’t have dessert before you order your “Butter Burger.” I won’t tell. Culver ’s is located off Goshen Road, right behind Home Depot in Glen Carbon. The difference between frozen custard and ice cream is real in the amount of butterfat that is added and egg yolks. Custard is churned at a slower rate. Ice cream depends on the fast churn to pump air into the mixture to give it that light texture. Custard, on the other hand, needs a slower turn to keep air out and give it a thicker, richer texture. Which ever your fancy, there are certainly enough great selections of custard and ice cream shops to choose from. Even if you have to split the family up and go your separate directions, it is worth it to satisfy that sweet tooth craving and to spend some fun time enjoying a great treat!

“Clash of the Titans”

Who wants to be a god, anyway? That’s the principle twist inserted into the remake of the sometimes fondly recalled, technologically dated 1981 film about the fury of the gods of Mount Olympus and the rise of the young, earthly demigod Perseus. This time, Perseus (Sam Worthington) bears a distaste for his godlike nature. He fights a serpentine Medusa, the sea monster Kraken and other mythical beasts for mankind, not for the deities. Liam Neeson plays the angry god Zeus, while Ralph Fiennes, in a cloud of black smog, plays Hades. Directed by Louis Leterrier (2008’s “The Incredible Hulk”), “Titans” will lure moviegoers chiefly by its digital effects (which are good but forgettable) and its promise of 3-D spectacle (which, having been converted from 2-D to 3-D in post, disappoints altogether). Worthington, the Australian star of “Avatar,” doesn’t supply the charisma the movie needs and the whole thing feels like a joyless slog. RATED: PG-13 for fantasy action violence, some frightening images and brief sensuality. RUNNING TIME: 106 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“Don McKay”

First-time writer-director Jake Goldberger delivers plenty of wicked humor with his “Blood Simple”-style film noir. It works to a degree thanks to the eager cast led by Thomas Haden Church, Elisabeth Shue and Melissa Leo. But the laughs are disjointed as each character one-ups the next with crazier and crazier revelations. Haden Church stars as a lonely janitor reunited with his dying high school sweetie (Shue), with Leo as the woman’s stern, suspicious nurse. Nothing and no one is quite who they seem among this threesome and their odd associates. Goldberger is stingy about revealing anything for much of the way, the movie becoming an endless tease. When the movie finally spills its secrets, they come in a torrent, the story lapsing into silliness just as the suspense is supposedly peaking. The climax remains very entertaining, but it’s more of a film-noir spoof ending that feels too madcap after the long, nearly static setup Goldberger maintained early on. RATED: R for language and some violence. RUNNING TIME: 90 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“The Greatest”

This see-how-we-mourn melodrama shows us the sloppy, lingering process of grieving can play out on a neat and tidy timetable, where everybody gets a catharsis and returns home healed. First-time writer-director Shana Feste yanks and claws shamelessly at those proverbial heartstrings, the story made tearily tolerable by intense though sometimes excessive performances from Pierce Brosnan and Susan Sarandon as parents grieving over the death of their son and Carey Mulligan as a teenager pregnant with the youth’s child. The movie might have resonated more if it threw out some of the grief-counseling cliches and let the idiosyncrasies of the characters dictate more of the drama. But if all you want is a good cry, “The Greatest” will comply. Tears are infectious, so when actors this good bawl their eyes out, more than a few people in the audience will sniffle and sob along with them. RATED: R for language, some sexual content and drug use. RUNNING TIME: 100 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

“The Last Song”

Have you heard the one about the two photogenic kids who meet cute in a Southern beach town, overcome differences in class and temperament and fall madly in love only to find that, in this cruel, cruel world, tragedy finds a way of trumping hormones? Dear God, it’s “Dear John,” right? Yes. But it’s also “The Last Song,” the second Nicholas Sparks movie to hit theaters in the past two months, a development only moonstruck teen girls and the facial tissue industry will welcome. Sparks wrote “The Last Song” at the behest of Miley Cyrus, the Disney Channel star who will soon end her run on the “Hannah Montana” TV series and wants to expand her brand into movies. Her young female fan base will likely be OK with her first try. Others might be tiring of Sparks’ use of death as a plot device. With Greg Kinnear and Liam Hemsworth. RATED: PG for thematic material, some violence, sensuality and mild language. RUNNING TIME: 101 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“The Thorn in the Heart”

For anyone who has seen a Michel Gondry movie (“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “Science of Sleep”) and wondered about the brain that could have created such a thing, this film is an interesting window into the French director. It’s his intimate portrait of the family matriarch, his aunt Suzette Gondry. Through casual interviews and old home movies, Gondry traces Suzette’s life as an elementary school teacher in rural France and as the mother of her now adult son, Jean-Yves, with whom she has a strained relationship. There are sporadic hints at Gondry’s magical, organic technique, but the general style is a verite documentary that shows a family where Super 8 is as much a part of the diet as carrots. But the only real audience for a film like this is its maker and his relatives. RATED: Not rated by the MPAA. RUNNING TIME: 86 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“The Warlords”

Jet Li shows new and richer acting moves in his latest Chinese historical epic that teams him to good effect with fellow Asian superstars Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro. In “Fearless” and especially “Hero,” Li already proved he’s more than just an action master, and this one gives him the chance to play two sides — not only the unadulterated idol, but also the hero after he’s been corrupted by ambition, envy and more than a trace of megalomania. Director Peter Chan handles the often spectacular battle sequences far more artfully than quiet human drama. But Li, Lau and Kaneshiro bring warmth, humor and pathos to their roles as warriors who swear a blood oath of brotherhood during the mid-19th century Taiping Rebellion. They pledge their loyalty with an act of barbarity that acclimates viewers to startling brutality to come; the film adheres without compromise to a crusader code that’s not for the squeamish. RATED: R for sequences of strong violence. RUNNING TIME: 110 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

“Don McKay” has its moments By DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press Film noir laced with black comedy is one of the hardest cinema styles to pull off. For a f i r s t - t i m e d i re c t o r, i t ’ s e v e n d a r i n g , s i n c e y o u ’ re s t a r t i n g your career with a lemon if the twists and gags of your weird little mystery don’t connect. The Coen brothers did it on “Blood Simple,” the film that inspired Jake Goldberger to try his hand with “Don McKay,” an admirable attempt even if the film only works spottily. “Don McKay” delivers plenty of wicked humor, thanks largely to the eager cast led by Thomas Haden Church, Elisabeth Shue and Melissa Leo. But the laughs come in disjointed fashion, the film unfolding not as a coherent story but an escalating spiral as each character one-ups the next with crazier and crazier revelations. Haden Church, also an e x e c u t i v e p ro d u c e r o n “ D o n M c K a y, ” h a s t h e t i t l e ro l e , a school janitor quietly going about his business until one day receiving a letter from his teenage sweetheart, Sonny (Shue), the love of his life he hasn’t seen in 25 years. Don rushes back to his hometown, where Sonny tells him she’s dying and wants to spend the rest of her short life with him. If that’s not a strangeenough way to rekindle ancient romance, Sonny’s live-in nurse, Marie (Leo), behaves more like a warden, and Don’s ex is continually hazy and changeable on the details of all the years since they parted.

In this image released by Image Entertainment, Thomas Haden Church, left, and Elisabeth Shue are shown in a scene from, “Don McKay.” Suspicion and strangeness mounts as Don encounters an old friend (Keith David), Sonny’s jealous doctor (James Rebhorn), an amiable thug (Pruitt Taylor Vince) and an inquisitive taxi driver (“Blood Simple” co-star M. Emmet Walsh). Virtually everyone is hiding something, and Goldberger is stingy about revealing anything for much of the way. It becomes an endless tease, with Don trying several times to walk away (and many a viewer probably thinking

of following him). When “Don McKay” finally spills its secrets, they come in a torrent so rapid that the movie lapses into silliness just as the suspense is supposedly p e a k i n g . T h e c l i m a x re m a i n s very entertaining, but it’s more of a film-noir spoof ending that feels too madcap after the long, nearly static setup Goldberger maintained early on. Haden Church plays Don with a stone-faced melancholy reminiscent of his inscrutably

odd character on TV’s “Wings.” Along with his deliriously r a n d y A c a d e m y Aw a r d nominated role in “Sideways,” “Don McKay” showcases Haden Church’s enormous comic range. Something just looks right about H a d e n C h u rc h i n h i s j a n i t o r jumpsuit, pushing an industrial floor buffer. Either he has an everyman gift of carriage — attuning his body language to the role — or he’s got another calling if this acting thing doesn’t work out for him.

Past Oscar nominees themselves, Shue and Leo don’t s h a re m a n y s c e n e s t o g e t h e r, but they’re both so funny and fickle that it would be great if some bright filmmaker such a s G o l d b e rg e r w ro t e a s h a r p “Thelma & Louise”-style buddy flick for the two of them. Goldberger already has a next project, a coming-of-age story he’s writing and directing. While “Don McKay” never quite comes together, it’s a sign of a coming talent on film.

“Clash of the Titans” won’t last long By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge There was a lot of familiarity in the weekend box office. Another Nicholas Sparks novel has been give the big screen treatment as Miley Cyrus tries to silence a lot of loud critics by starring in “The Last Song.” Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married, Too?” is the prodigious writer/director/star ’s foray into the pantheon of sequels. His movie will satisfy his usually faithful fans, but I actually thought it was better than its predecessor. The running time was a tad excessive, and you had to hunt for the meaning behind the lengthy title, but the acting was better and more dramatic. That leaves Perseus, I guess. Yeah, the remade “Clash of the Titans.” Harry Hamlin is now officially old. I just wish they’d done a better job with it. “Clash of the Titans” is the first collision of multiple 3-D films battling for the, as of yet, few number of digital screens capable of broadcasting them to the waiting throngs of fans who want them. “Alice in Wonderland

“Clash of the Titans”

RATED: PG-13 for fantasy action violence, some frightening images, and brief sensuality. RUNNING TIME: 112 minutes. ROBERT’S RANKING: one star out of four. was still going strong when “How to Train Your Dragon” derailed its plans of running the table for Spring. And Paramount’s poor little fire-breathing cartoon? It only got a week in release before Medusa turned its romp to stone. Somethings’ gotta give. The myth of Perseus is fairly well-known. Or at least the background characters are. Reigning box office stud Sam Worthington stars as the Greek demigod, a son of Zeus (Liam Neeson), who was rescued from the depths of the sea by a fisherman as an infant.

He grows into a strong man, one that the gods continue to monitor from atop their thrones on Mount Olympus. Perseus loses his mortal family at the hands of a vindictive Hades (Ralph Fiennes) and swears revenge against all of the deities at that time. Partnering with some of the bravest soldiers of the doomed town of Argos, Perseus pledges to stop at nothing until Hades is defeated and the city’s princess, Andromeda (Alexa Davalos), is spared unnecessary martyrdom. His plan is heavily aided in many ways by the gods themselves and involves defeating the Kracken, Hades’ ultimate beast of destruction that hides below the ocean floor. A guiding voice, in the form of a beautiful protectress named Io (Gemma Arterton), leads our hero and feeds good advice into his ear at every pivotal confrontation. As Perseus and the soldiers try to find answers to how to destroy the Kracken, they are led through skirmishes and adventures that includes a mild introduction to the

winged horse, Pegasus, and a battle with some pretty cool stone scorpions (that are the size of buildings). The final confrontation with the Kracken is far from impressive, but led into by a pretty nifty sequence set amid Medusa’s (Natalia Vodianova) lair, a palace laid out across a volcano. The entire thing was filmed much in the format of a particularly spectacular video game with crisp images and strong depictions of what it must be like to turn a world into granite with only a look. This version of “Clash of the Titans,” itself a remake of the cheesy 1981 movie starring Harry Hamlin and Laurence Olivier, is also especially lame. Save for the scorpion battle and the look of the gorgon temple, there was absolutely nothing of merit in this film. And I say this from both the viewpoint of a critic and a movie fan. While I did not have the opportunity to see it in digital 3-D, I am told that the effects--all of which were added in post-production--aren’t all that special. The movie might have opened big, but I’m not expecting to see much staying power from it.

Movies Carell, Fey can't save "Date Night" By DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press Steve Carell and Tina Fey’s night out is not so much a bad date as a sad date. These are two of the funniest people ever on television, yet their big-screen “Date Night” is a dreary, uninspired waste of their talents — and those of the top-name cast inexplicably appearing in small throwaway roles. The movie manages the barest glimmers of the droll humor of Carell’s “The Office” and the snappy wit of Fey’s “30 Rock,” and those few moments underscore how barren “Date Night” is the rest of the time. Carell and Fey have an easy, affectionate rapport as run-down parents looking to renew some romantic sparks with a night out

in Manhattan to break their boring routine. The actors try hard to make it work, but the lowbrow sensibilities of director Shawn Levy (the “Night at the Museum” movies, “Cheaper by the Dozen”) leave them tottering through painful verbal exchanges, lame stunts and other dreadfully unfunny hijinks (their pole dance at a strip club is just embarrassing, and like so many of the movie’s gags, it drags on a long time). The sketchy premise in screenwriter Josh Klausner ’s script casts Carell and Fey as Phil and Claire Foster, tired, ordinary but reasonably content with their cozy New Jersey life with their two kids. Once a week, Phil and Claire have a “date night” — dinner and the same old table talk at the same old local restaurant. After two of their friends (Mark Ruffalo

and Kristen Wiig) announce they’re splitting up, the Fosters decide they need a marital booster and head to the city. Swiping a no-show couple’s dinner reservation at a trendy Manhattan restaurant, the Fosters are mistaken for blackmailers who stole a flash-drive with incriminating information about some very dangerous criminal types. Date night turns into a night on the run for Phil and Claire, who cross paths with a mobster (Ray Liotta), a security expert (Mark Wahlberg), a devoted cop (Taraji P. Henson), a drug dealer and his stripper girlfriend (James Franco and Mila Kunis) and two relentless thugs (Common and Jimmi Simpson). The filmmakers give these extra hands nothing remotely interesting or amusing to do (ongoing gags about Wahlberg’s shirtlessness

are so repetitive they become exasperating). Ruffalo’s character says his marriage has become so humdrum that he and his soonto-be-ex are nothing more than “excellent roommates.” That kind of sums up the dynamic between Fey and Carell, a couple of troupers who do try to deliver their drowsy lines as if they were saying funny stuff. But like Phil and Claire, they are going through the motions, pretending they’re in a good comedy in hopes of keeping it from falling apart. It falls apart, anyway. Clearly, things have gone wrong when the outtakes pasted over the end credits cannot even provoke a chuckle. Skip this “Date Night.” Put the money toward your own night out at a fancy restaurant. Call ahead for a reservation first.

Bitter Melon Don’t be scared by the name – or the fact that it’s good for you By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge In an interview with Hilary Clinton a number of years ago, the reporter was inquiring about family life in the Clinton household. Hilary shared a fun family outing and tradition that she and Bill enjoyed with Chelsea. They would all go to the grocery together (picture Bill and Hilary schlepping a shopping cart with the wobbly wheel that squeaks really bad), and they would head straight to the produce department. Once in the produce department, Chelsea was the boss. She would wander around and find something different that she had never tried and was curious about. Hilary went on to describe how Chelsea once picked out a whole coconut and the antics that she and Bill went through to finally break open the coconut, just to find that Chelsea did not like it at all. This story made me consider the same quest in my family. We all don’t go as a family to the store, otherwise I would have to take out a second mortgage every time, as my cart mysteriously is much, much fuller

and has items that magically appear on the check out counter that I know I didn’t choose. But, from time to time I would let one of my kids pick something that we weren’t familiar with and we would take it home and try to find a recipe and give it a whirl. We introduced a number of new items into our diet that way. Bitter Melon may be one of those items that would be fun to pick-up and try out, not just for the uniqueness, but for the health benefits. You may have read about Bitter Melon in the news lately. A recent study suggests that this bitter gourd has cancerfighting properties, and for centuries, Bitter Melon has been consumed as a medicinal food. Frieda’s Specialty Produce is now distributing this unusual ethnic vegetable to Schnucks supermarkets.

It looks like a lumpy, bumpy cucumber covered with warts. Inside are small, flat seeds and a hollow cavity. Grown on vines in many tropical regions around the world, Bitter Melon goes by many names: Bitter Gourd, Balsalm Pear, Goya (Japan), Karela/Kavel (India), Ampalaya (The Philippines), Balsamino (Spanish Caribbean), Foo Qua/Fu Gwa/Ku Gua (China), Kho-Qua (Vietnam). There are also many varieties, but the most common in the U.S. are Asian-style Bitter Melon and Indian Bitter Melon. Bitter Melon is not for culinary cowards. Its flavor is very bitter -much more bitter than radicchio or endive lettuce. It’s truly an acquired taste. Not everyone will have much of a palate for Bitter Melon, but it’s much loved around the world, especially in India and The Philippines.

(Momordicine is the natural chemical compound that makes it so bitter.) So, if you dare, how do you prepare it? Most recommend cooking it by first scraping out the seeds and inner membrane, and then steaming, boiling, stir-frying, pickling, or even deepfrying. Some people like to salt it and rinse it before cooking to remove some of the bitterness. Pair Bitter Melon with strong flavors, especially hot spices, which help to balance the bitterness. It’s often used in curries with coconut milk, or stuffed with onions and spices and fried. For centuries, Bitter Melon has been used as a medicinal food. It is believed to cleanse the blood and help with digestion. Some even use it as a tonic for malaria. Many believe that Bitter Melon can actually lower your blood sugar. And studies are being done to investigate its cancer-fighting properties. In some countries, it’s even sold as a supplement in capsule form. Frieda’s is passionate about changing the way America eats. Founded in 1962 by Frieda Caplan, Frieda’s, Inc. was the first wholesale produce company in the U.S. to be founded, owned and operated by a woman. Once a small produce stand at the Los Angeles Produce Market, Frieda’s has emerged as the nation’s premier marketer and distributor of specialty produce and now offers more than 600 specialty items to grocery stores and foodservice distributors throughout the U.S. and Canada. America has Frieda’s to thank for introductions to Kiwifruit, Shallots, Cherimoyas, Donut Peaches, Sugar Snap Peas and Habanero Peppers and the innovations just keep coming. Dining Delights Celebrity chefs lead charge for healthier food MIAMI (AP) — Jamie Oliver is using fresh fruit and vegetables to try to win the hearts, or at least the fatty arteries, of a West Virginia city. Rachael Ray is working to reform school lunch. And Paula Deen, queen of Southern-fried goodness, recently taught an auditorium of kids how to cook and eat healthy. Chefs have always wanted us to eat something good. Now, it seems they’re just as interested in seeing that we eat well. “They’re digging down to more substance, which is great because we all win,” says Phil Lempert, the food marketing expert known as The Supermarket Guru. “Before it was cleavage and being cute to get noticed. Now it’s all about substance, nutrition.” This didn’t happen overnight. Pioneers like California chef Alice Waters and, more recently, journalist Michael Pollan have been preaching the gospel of fresh, unadulterated food for years. But when everyone from Deen to “Dancing With the Stars” alum Rocco DiSpirito is talking about the benefits of produce over processed you know the tent has gotten a little bigger. “It became clear to a bunch of us that not only is it a good idea now, but people are ready to be receptive,” says DiSpirito, author of the recent New York Times’ bestselling healthy cookbook, “Now Eat This!” That’s partly because the rock star status TV chefs enjoy gives them an entree into American kitchens that previous proponents of healthy eating lacked, notes Lee Schrager, founder and organizer of the annual South Beach Wine and Food Festival. Oliver, for example, is headlining “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution,” an ABC reality show documenting his efforts to change eating habits in a community the network calls the nation’s unhealthiest. Chefs are realizing they have a responsibility to use their influence to foster change, Oliver says. And celebrities often can do that with more panache than traditional nutrition advocates have. “You don’t want to food nazi the fun out of everything,” he says. “You can still cook great things that are calorific, but you just need to intro it with kind of — Look, this is a special occasion, or this is for the holidays, or whatever.” Snappy titles and glamorous stars are new tactics for the eat healthy movement, which in the past has been perceived, fairly or not, as fun-deprived. Even Sesame Street is reaching for star power. The program recently named Art Smith, Oprah Winfrey’s former chef, as its healthy eating adviser. “It’s becoming less elitist,” says nutrition and policy expert Marion Nestle, who credits first lady Michelle Obama’s championship of

April 15, 2010

healthy eating with helping take the issue mainstream. Deen agrees. “We work on unintimidating foods that mothers and dads can put together pretty easily,” she says. Now there even is a glossy food magazine dedicated to helping kids eat and cook healthier. The just launched quarterly ChopChop Magazine is aimed at 5 to 12-yearolds. A tipping point in the debate seems to be child obesity, the focus of the first lady’s campaign. A nation that can gaze with equanimity at racks of XXL clothing for grown-ups has grown less tolerant of needing

“husky” jeans for 5-year-olds. At the recent South Beach festival in Miami, an event for 50,000 people where $300 tickets are the norm and Champagne flows freely, obese kids might seem off-topic. But Schrager worked them into the schedule for the third year, adding a healthy eating fair for children at a nearby zoo. For $20, families could spend the day learning about healthy eating and watch cooking demos by Food Network celebrities such as Ray and Deen. “Everything has to change — access to food, attitudes, education,” says Ray, who designs healthy recipes for the New York City school lunch program and started the Yum-

o! charity, which raises money to teach kids healthy eating. Even the message itself has changed. Low-fat and low-carb are so last century. Today, it’s about balance and real foods. “It’s far better to eat a balanced diet of full-fat whole foods than it is to eat no-fat, low-fat or fake foods where they’ve replaced fat with fillers and stuff like that,” says Ray. “And I think that one of the benefits of eating a balanced diet is that you can eat some of the things that are not so figure-friendly some of the time,” says Ray. Still, even celebrity-driven change doesn’t come easy.

Oliver, in the early episodes of his new show at least, has made some converts but also gotten pushback from people who don’t take kindly to an out-of-towner overhauling their diets. But, he says, it’s an effort worth making. “One doesn’t want to suck the life or fun out of food because that would be wrong. But, you know, I think the general world of food — chefs, celebrity chefs, fastfood industry, supermarkets, the ’government food gang’ — they all need to do a bit. Hopefully, a bit more than a bit. And if they do, the world will change.”

Dining Delights “Chef-worthy” kitchen tools catch on Americans are staying home more – and cooking more NEW YORK (AP) – You don’t have to be a kitchen snob to want appliances and tools that bona fide chefs would be happy to use. My husband once gave me an industrial-strength hand mixer, and I loved it. Potatoes, turnips, even dough succumbed to its powerful little motor in mere minutes. Even the children, t a s k e d w i t h w h i p p i n g c re a m , noticed its shortcomings. We’d driven the high-performance model, and there was no going back. These days, Americans are staying in, cooking and entertaining more. Food channels run 24 hours. And retailers and manufacturers are offering many new products that straddle professional and home kitchens: things like multifunction cooktops and ovens, and thoughtfully designed gadgets. Kitchenaid, one of the first to offer a commercial grade stand mixer, has launched the Commercial Series appliance line, which includes a cooktop with dual flames for searing or simmering, an easy-clean chrome griddle, and a “steamassist” oven. Serious cooks would appreciate that last feature — it eliminates the need to spritz, baste, even use a bain-marie. If none of those terms are familiar, y o u p ro b a b l y d o n ’ t n e e d o n e . But for frequent bread bakers, roasting aficionados and dessert makers, the feature’s a welcome addition. This year, Jenn-Air introduced a new wall oven designed with the help of professional chefs. Billed as “the industry’s most powerful convection system,” it features an interactive “culinary center” — basically an onboard computer. The userfriendly control panel provides detailed visuals and interactive guidance. As for smaller tools, many culinary experts like a good pair of shears for various

Dining Delights OK, we admit these are our opinions and you certainly should form your own, but it is nice to have a guide of places to eat when you are undecided or want to try something new or different. To send us a suggestion of a restaurant to try, e-mail theedge@ edwpub.net

but embrace it! Although men look at it as “chick food,” there is something for every taste on their menu. Fantastic soups, sandwiches, bakery items, coffees, teas, salads, and more. Great place to take a laptop or a book and just kick back and sip a cup of java.

54th Street Bar and Grill Edwardsville 4 stars Great menu selection, something for everyone. Prices are very reasonable and have not had a bad selection yet. Remember to get your frequent diner card stamped when ordering an entree so you can get one free when your card is full.

Bully’s Smokehouse Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars The food is good at Bully’s, but a little foo-foo for a barbecue place. The prices are a little more than typical barbecue fare. Good for business lunch or dinner and nice servings.

Red Robin Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars The bottomless french fries are fantastic, but it basically is a pricey burger place. Service is not super speedy, but food was good and hot. Good group setting. Cold Stone Creamery Edwardsville 5 stars I really would give this more stars if we had them, but all we can give is five. I LOVE their ice cream concoctions, particularly the Cheesecake Fantasy or the Apple Pie A La Cold Stone. I really could put more selections here, but use your imagination! Red Apple Maryville 4 stars The Red Apple is another favorite of our family, whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner. There is a huge menu selection, including Italian, broasted chicken, gyros, sandwiches of all kinds, plate specials, fish selections – fried and broiled, and much more. Service is always impeccable and prices can’t be beat. La Fonda Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars Good food, good service. All you can eat chips and salsa are great complement to their abundant menu. Their rice and beans are excellent also. Bigelo’s Bistro Edwardsville 4 stars Great menu selection of gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads, pastas and more. Great downtown Edwardsville location where you are sure to see someone you know. St. Louis Bread Company Edwardsville/Collinsville 4 1/2 Stars OK men, don’t scoff at the rating,

April 15, 2010

Pantera’s Pizza Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars Still some of the best pizza around, but the decor needs a bit of updating, along with the dinner ware. The buffet is good if

they keep it full, but that can be an issue at times. You better put on your running shoes to get that hot selection before everyone else beats you to it! El Maguey Mexican Restaurant Edwardsville 3 Stars Good chips and salsa start you off with a nice selection of dishes. Authentic Mexican dishes are delivered promptly to your table. Jimmy John’s Sandwich Shop Edwardsville 4 stars Where sandwiches are concerned, you can hardly beat a good Jimmy John’s. Their Bootlegger Club and The Big John are some of the favorites around here. Their cookies are great also, ask them to heat it up. They really are “freaky fast!”

Big Daddy’s Edwardsville 3 stars Typical bar fare of appetizers, sandwiches, salads, and wraps round out Big Daddy’s menu. They offer specials on certain days that are a real value. Service can be a bit slow when they are busy. Northside Dairy Haven Edwardsville 4 stars This seasonal drive-in has been part of the Edwardsville landscape for nearly 50 years. Still famous for their Charco Burger, they also have an array of other sandwiches and barbecue plate specials. The prices cannot be beat! Fiona’s Family Restaurant Edwardsville 4 stars S p e c i a l s e a c h d a y, l o t s o f selections, great breakfast. Service

i s f a s t a n d f o o d i s h o t . Ve r y friendly environment where you won’t spend a lot to get a great meal. Bella Milano Edwardsville 4 stars Quickly becoming a legend in Edwardsville, Bella Milano is a favorite for many. Great dining a t m o s p h e re a n d l o t s o f g o o d Italian food and drink. Come hungry with loose fitting clothing. Bull and Bear Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars A sports bar and grill with that offers bar side and dining room seating. A selection of appetizers, sandwiches, steaks, baby back ribs, chicken, seafood, pizza, and a kid’s menu make it family friendly, yet a great hangout for friends.
