People For The Edge DoubleTree by Hilton announced that five of its most celebrated and distinguished hotels have joined the prestigious Historic Hotels of America organization. From the ground on which Harry S. Truman once waved the "Dewey Defeats Truman" headline to the property now recognized as the "Official Hotel of the Alamo," these five storied historic hotels embody the spirit and legacy of DoubleTree by Hilton in their own communities. The official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation速, Historic Hotels of America recognizes only the finest hotels for maintaining their authenticity, sense of place and architectural integrity. To qualify for the program, hotels must have historic significance, be at least 50 years old, be designated by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark or be listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. "From opening the first DoubleTree by Hilton in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1969 to celebrating the 300 millionth cookie given away at check-in last March, DoubleTree by Hilton has a long-standing legacy of delivering the 'little things' that create a better travel experience," said John Greenleaf, global head, DoubleTree by Hilton. "Maintaining the history and heritage of these iconic hotels is just another way we strive to celebrate the cities in which our hotels are located and continue our commitment both to our guests and the local communities we serve. We're honored to have these
outstanding properties added to the esteemed Historic Hotels of America collection."
With its diverse global portfolio of hotels, DoubleTree by Hilton is one of the fastest-growing hotel brands in the upscale, full service hotel category, recognized around the world for a service culture built around the idea of CARE, which stands for creating a rewarding experience for guests, team members and the community. Guests who have stayed at a DoubleTree by Hilton in recent years have seen a dramatic transformation of the brand's hotel experience through reinvestments by hotel owners and the brand in amenities, services and style, including historic landmarks. "These legendary DoubleTree by Hilton hotels celebrate rich aspects of the heritage, history, transportation, and grand architectural accomplishments of the United States, and we are proud to welcome them as members of Historic Hotels of America," said Lawrence Horwitz, executive director, Historic Hotels of America and Historic Hotels Worldwide. Each DoubleTree by Hilton property inducted into Historic Hotels of America illustrates a standard of excellence for which the brand is known. The properties recognized by Historic Hotels of America include: Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center - a DoubleTree by Hilton: Originally erected in 1882 as the headquarters hotel for the Norfolk Western Railroad, the Hotel Roanoke was built as part of a comprehensive community development plan and grand vision of railroad entrepreneur and magnate Frederick Kimball.
The hotel, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, flourished even during the Great Depression, and has since grown from 36 rooms to 331 rooms. St. Louis Union Station - a DoubleTree by Hilton: The hotel initially functioned as a passenger train terminal dating back to 1894. The famous photograph of Harry S. Truman holding the Chicago Tribune with the headline, "Dewey Defeats Truman," was taken at the station as Truman traveled to Washington, D.C. after the 1948 presidential election. The St. Louis Union Station was once the largest train station in the United States with the most daily passengers of any train station in the world. DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Detroit Downtown: This hotel opened its doors in 1917 as The Fort Shelby Hotel, named for its iconic setting on the site of the famous Fort Shelby, colonial-era fort that stood nearby until 1829 and played a role in the War of 1812. The Emily Morgan San Antonio a DoubleTree by Hilton: Known as the "Official Hotel of the Alamo," the hotel opened in 1924 and is named after the servant girl who was rumored to have wooed the Mexican General Santa Anna during the Battle of San Jacinto. The Tudor Arms Cleveland - a DoubleTree by Hilton: The Tudor Arms was originally built in 1933 and opened as the swanky, exclusive Cleveland Club featuring ballrooms, a swimming pool, a bowling alley and beautiful views of downtown Cleveland. Near the end of the Great Depression it evolved into a hotel
known as the Tudor Arms and soon became a noted entertainment venue. To book their stay, consumers can visit www.doubletree.com or www.historichotels.org. For more information or to download historical photos of these hotels, media may visit news.doubletree. com/historichotels. Historic Hotels of America is the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation速 for recognizing and celebrating the finest Historic Hotels. Historic Hotels of America was founded in 1989 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation with 32 charter members. Today, Historic Hotels of America has more than 260 historic hotels. These historic hotels have all faithfully maintained their authenticity, sense of place, and architectural integrity in the United States of America, including 44 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. Historic Hotels of America is comprised of mostly independently owned and operated properties. More than 30 of the world's finest hospitality brands, chains, and collections are represented in Historic Hotels of America. To be nominated and selected for membership into this prestigious program, a hotel must be at least 50 years old; has been designated by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark or listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places; and recognized as having historic significance. People People planner “The Munsters” are coming to Greenville Car Show
It may look like Halloween in June as two of the stars of the classic television show “The Munsters” will be the celebrity guests at this year’s Greenville (Illinois) Graffiti Car Show. Butch Patrick (Eddie Munster) and Pat Priest (Marilyn Munster) will meet fans and sign autographs on Saturday, June 20 during the show. Replicas of the Munster Koach and Dragula, prominently featured on the program, will also be making an appearance. Patrick was a popular child star who also made guest appearances on many shows of the 1960s including “Bonanza”, “Gunsmoke” and “Rawhide”. Patrick’s work as Eddie, the son of Herman and Lily Munster, made him a TV icon. In the early 1970s Patrick was the star of “Lidsville”, a quirky Saturday morning show produced by Sid and Marty Krofft. Priest took over the role of Marilyn Munster in the show’s 16th episode. Perhaps her best known role outside of “The Munsters” came in 1967 when she co-starred with Elvis Presley in the movie “Easy Come, Easy Go”. She was also a guest on other iconic programs like “Perry Mason”, “Bewitched” and “Mission Impossible”. Car show organizers are excited to have the Munster Koach and Drag-ula on display that day. The original vehicles were the creation of George Barris, a legendary designer and maker of cars used in television shows and movies. The Munster Koach, Herman Munster’s preferred method of transportation, was created from three Model T bodies. The Drag-ula, built by Grandpa Munster and used by Herman in a classic episode of the show, was made using a real fiberglass coffin. This is a rare opportunity to see television history in person. Butch Patrick, Pat Priest, the Munster Koach, and the Drag-ula may also be seen at the Munster’s Ball, a special event to be held on Friday, June 19 at the American Farm Heritage Museum in Greenville. This ticketed event includes a question and answer session with the stars, photo opportunities, food, and other fun. Ticket information about the Munster’s Ball may be obtained by calling the Greenville Chamber of Commerce at (618) 664-9272. The Greenville Graffiti Car Show on Saturday, June 20 is open to 1990 and older cars and trucks for judging. Vehicles may also be brought for display. For the first time, motorcycles may be brought for display only. Last year’s event attracted nearly 190 cars and trucks to downtown Greenville, Illinois.
highlight specially selected St. Louis Symphony performances from the 2014–2015 season, as well as encore presentations of concert specials produced since 2012. “This is the only partnership of its kind in the nation between a public television station and a s y m p h o n y o rc h e s t r a , ” s a i d Patrick Murphy, vice president of production for the Nine Network. “The opportunity to bring the experience of one of the world’s finest orchestras into every home in our region shows what is possible when cultural institutions work together for the benefit of the community.” “When we first started our partnership five years ago, I never would have expected it to evolve into what it’s become,” said Adam Crane, vice president for external affairs at the St. Louis Symphony. “We’ve learned so much along the way, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our musicians and staff, as well as the Nine Network team. The orchestra's mission is to enrich people’s lives through the power of music, and Night at the Symphony embodies this." “In a season full of special anniversaries for the St. Louis Symphony, the genesis of Night at the Symphony is a terrific way to celebrate,” said Music Director David Robertson. “It’s another way that audiences can enjoy our
world-class orchestra and we’re grateful to the Nine Network for the new opportunity to continue t o s h a re o u r m u s i c w i t h t h e community.” “Our partnership with the St. Louis Symphony is a shining example of what can be achieved through creative collaboration and commitment to a common objective,” said Nine Network President and CEO Jack Galmiche. “It is particularly exciting for us to add this unprecedented series to our extensive local and national arts programming.” The programming lineup for Night at the Symphony through 2015 is as follows (the series will not air in March, June and December): May 4 David Robertson conducts pieces by Brahms, Rosas, Ravel, Alfven, Borodin, Bartók and Ginastera with featured violinists Eva Kozma and Silvian Iticovici. July 6 Conductor David Robertson leads the symphony and cellist Alvin McCall in the performance of works by Copland, Ives and MacDowell. People People planner Missouri History Museum to exhibit Nazi Propaganda The Nazi Party developed a sophisticated propaganda machine that deftly spread lies about its political opponents, Jews, and the need to justify war. But Nazi p ro p a g a n d a w a s m u c h m o re complex than that. For the Nazis to achieve power and pursue their racial policies and expansionist war efforts, a much more nuanced picture had to be painted—one that would appeal to broad swaths of the population, not just a fanatical extreme. Featuring rarely seen artifacts, State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda draws visitors into a rich multimedia environment vividly illustrating the insidious allure of much of Nazi propaganda. The exhibition opens at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park on April 11, 2015 and will be on display through September 7, 2015. “Adolf Hitler was an avid student of propaganda and borrowed techniques from the Allies in World War I, his Socialist and Communist rivals, the Italian Fascist Party, as well as modern advertising,” says exhibition curator Steven Luckert. “Drawing upon these models, he successfully marketed the Nazi Party, its ideology, and himself to the German people.” The exhibition reveals how shortly after World War I, the Nazi Party began to transform itself from an obscure, extremist group into the largest political party in democratic Germany. Hitler early on recognized how propaganda, combined with the use of terror, could help his radical party gain mass support and votes. He personally adapted the ancient symbol of the swastika and the emotive colors of red, black, and white to create the movement’s flag. In doing so, Hitler established a potent visual identity that has branded the Nazi Party ever since. After seizing power, the Nazi Party took over all communications in Germany. It marshaled the state’s resources to consolidate power and relentlessly promote its vision of a “racially pure,” utopian Germany that needed to defend itself from those who would destroy it. Jews were cast as the primary enemies, but others, including Roma, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and mentally and physically d i s a b l e d p e r s o n s , w e re a l s o portrayed as threats to the “national community.” As Germany pushed the world i n t o w a r, N a z i p r o p a g a n d a rationalized Germany’s territorial expansion as self-defense. Jews were depicted as agents of disease and corruption. The Nazis’ actions against them, in Germany and occupied countries, were promoted as necessary measures to protect the population at large. Admission to State of Deception is free.

It’s not rock, blues, bluegrass, country nor jazz. It’s not anything in particular. Bones, jug, xylophone,
kazoos, steel pan, resonator guitar, banjo, double bass, drums, all sorts of noise makers. These are just some of the instruments Bones Jugs N Harmony use to conjure up their eclectic acoustic sound. It’s Frank Zappa meets Spike Jones, it’s Looney Tunes meets Nintendo. It’s seriously silly. It’s a party. It’s for dancing, for listening, for enjoying. It’s for adults. It’s for kids. It’s for everyone. Bones Jugs N Harmony believes music should bring joy, and they work hard to put this in every song. From the first note till the end they strive to send their joyful sound into the ears where it will quickly saturate the entire body. It’s a frenzy of frivolity, a marvel of merriment. In short, it’s just loads of fun. This concert series is created not only for the community but by the community working together. Topquality celebrations and events like these would not be possible without the involvement of a dedicated corporate community. "The Divergent Series: Insurgent"
Given that conformity is the scourge of the "Divergent" series and much of its young-adult ilk, it's a shame that the films, including the new "Insurgent," do so little to stray from well-worn YA paths. For a series that waves the banner of individualism, they make a poor case for it. Instead of throbbing with a teenage spirit of rebellion — or things like youthful wildness, humor or sex — the two "Divergent" movies are curiously content to eke out a rigid, lifeless fable in drab futuristic environs. The answer, here, to the question of what are you rebelling against isn't "Whaddya got?" but the slightly less visceral "An elaborate, highly metaphorical dystopian system of militaristic control." But even faint, fantastical whiffs of teen insurrection carry enough potency to drive feverish young audiences. Why? Much of it has to do with the stars. Say what you will about YA movies, but they've been an efficient star-making machine that's produced Jennifer Lawrence, Kristen Stewart and Shailene Woodley. We should be happy to have them: good actresses all, who easily lead their respective films over their male counterparts. The YA men aren't as fine a bunch but here include the hunky Theo James and the excellent Miles Teller. Predictably providing "Insurgent" with its only lively, comedic moments, Teller looks as if he didn't get the note that all must be sullen and serious. A quick summary. Based on Veronica Roth's trilogy of best-selling novels, the "Divergent" films are set in a walled, post-apocalyptic Chicago, where survivors are ritualistically sorted into five factions. Every 16-year-old is tested for which faction suits them, and then must choose one and remain there forever. Tris (Woodley) chose Dauntless, who are known for their bravery and, it seems, their proclivity for train hopping. But her test revealed her to be "divergent" — someone who has no dominant characteristic but a plethora — and this makes her uncontrollable. RATED: PG-13 for "intense violence and action throughout, some sensuality, thematic elements and brief language." RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
"While We're Young"
It's safe to say there aren't a lot of movies out there about reaching middle age gracefully and happily. And how could there be? The only thing worse than getting old, as the saying goes, is the alternative. But at least we have the movies — the good ones, anyway — to make us laugh about this fraught, undignified experience. And few recent films have done it better than Noah Baumbach's deliciously sharp and touching "While We're Young." It seems apt indeed that Baumbach's star here, Ben Stiller, is 49 in real life — the age at which one finally, truly cannot deny having, SOMEHOW, reached middle age. In a minor but hilarious exchange, Stiller's 40-something character, Josh Srebnick, is told he has arthritis. Surely, Josh protests with utter guilelessness, it's not "arthritis arthritis" — it's some other kind. "It's arthritis, and usually I only say it once," the doctor replies. Josh is a documentary filmmaker who's been working on the same project for a decade, about a subject so dense and academic and boring we can't explain it here. He's married to Cornelia (Naomi Watts, doing some of her best work in years), who also works on documentaries, assisting her father, a legendary documentarian played by the wonderful Charles Grodin. You may think that's enough documentarians for

one movie, but you'd be wrong: the film's dream casting also includes Adam Driver as Jamie, a 20-ish, ambitious documentarian-wannabe. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for language." RUNNING TIME: 94 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.
"Get Hard"
While the stereotypes in "Get Hard" may be gross exaggerations, its characters live in the real world: A place where the chasm between rich and poor is vast and growing; where black men are disproportionately jailed and white-collar criminals often evade punishment. In this comedy from first-time director Etan Cohen, James (Will Ferrell) is a Los Angeles millionaire hedge-fund investor whose life of indulgence and ignorance is interrupted by a surprise prison sentence for fraud. He turns to the guy who runs the company car wash, Darnell (Kevin Hart) — apparently the only black person he has ever met — and asks for help to prepare for 10 years in maximum security. Darnell has no jail experience, but he agrees because he needs money to buy a home in a better school district for his little girl. When Darnell's wife, Rita (Edwina Findley Dickerson) — the film's only voice of reason — asks what he did to give the impression he had a criminal record, he replies, "I was being black." Darnell's pre-jail prep class includes transforming his student's Bel-Air mansion into a pretend prison, the household staff gleefully becoming its guards. Lessons include getting James in shape, teaching him how to fight and encouraging him to practice oral sex on men. The first yields some laughs as the 6-foot-3 Ferrell uses the diminutive Hart as a barbell. But forced sex isn't funny, no matter who's doing the forcing or the gender of the parties involved. "Get Hard" traffics in other crude humor involving more than one look at Farrell's naked tush and a tiring amount of puns on the film's title. Darnell knows one real ex-con, his cousin Russell (an ultracharismatic Tip "T.I." Harris), whom he turns to for actual help for James behind bars. James hits it off with Russell and his gangster pals when he shows them how they can "liquidate two bricks of cocaine" into hedge funds to make more money. "Wall Street, man. Those are the real criminals," one gangster says. Right. This is supposed to be a parody of the One Percent. The film is guilty of occasionally underlining its jokes like this. James even uses the phrase "teachable moment" after a heated racial encounter — and not ironically. But when Darnell misses all of James' literary references, is that satire, or is it racist and classist? RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "pervasive crude and sexual content and language, some graphic nudity, and drug material." RUNNING TIME: 99 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
"Furious 7"
Fast-moving fight scenes, outrageous auto antics and a sprinkling of ridiculous one-liners make "Furious 7" a campy, crowd-pleasing escape. Never mind that the film repeatedly presents the impossible — a muscle car attacks an airborne helicopter — fans of the franchise know to suspend disbelief at the door. With nonstop action from start to finish, it's easy — if a bit exhausting — to go along for the high-speed ride. Reality intrudes at the end: The film is dedicated to Paul

Walker, who died in a car crash in 2013, and concludes with a montage of images of the actor from his five previous "Fast and Furious" appearances. Walker's brothers acted as standins and special effects were used to maintain his presence throughout his final film, which was still in production when he died. There are a couple of creepy allusions to his death in the film that could briefly jar viewers. At one point, Roman (Tyrese Gibson) asks Brian (Walker) to promise their team won't face any more funerals. When Brian replies, "Just one more," he's referring to that of the film's villain (Jason Statham), but one can't help but think of the actor's own accidental death. Another scene shows Brian telling wife Mia (Jordana Brewster) that if she doesn't hear from him after the crew's latest mission, she should "move on." It almost feels like a message to his co-stars. Like its predecessors, the seventh installment of the hit franchise features a multicultural cast, international settings and a dazzling array of cars. While this critic is partial to American muscle cars, the $3.5 million Lykan Hypersport from Dubai-based W Motors is incredible to see. Only seven such vehicles exist. (No Lykan Hypersports were harmed during the making of the film.) RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "prolonged frenetic sequences of violence, action and mayhem, suggestive content and brief strong language." RUNNING TIME: 140 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"Woman in Gold"
"Woman in Gold" has a rich story to tell. The true account of Maria Altmann's fight to reclaim a famed Gustav Klimt painting of her aunt, "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I," first stolen by the Nazis and then appropriated by Austria after the war, is laced with riveting history, deep and complex emotion, and fascinating bureaucracy. Yet director Simon Curtis's rendering of Altmann's tale, though respectful and pretty, is somehow lifeless. There is almost too much here for a single movie. Curtis, who charmed with his Marilyn Monroe slice of life "My Week with Marilyn," relies on a combination of flashbacks of Maria's pre-war life in Vienna and the present day tick-tock of her legal quest to take ownership of the painting. Played in the present by Helen Mirren, Maria is a prickly woman with a thick Austrian accent. She owns a boutique in a fancy part of Los Angeles and, following the death of her sister, has made up her mind that she would like to claim what is hers. The man she convinces to help her is Randy Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds), a dull corporate lawyer with a prestigious pedigree and a few poor career choices on his resume. It's been over 60 years since Maria fled Austria during World War II and she is sickened by the thought of returning, refusing to even speak the language when they arrive abroad to plead their case. In Vienna, they're helped by a young native journalist (Daniel Brühl) who functions mostly as a human exposition vehicle. With two actors as charming as Mirren and Reynolds anchoring the story, it's a bit disarming that their charisma never really manages to energize the sluggish tale. Part of that is for effect — they're supposed to grow to love and admire one another while he learns to respect her history — but the eventual payoff doesn't connect. These characters aren't equipped to deliver the lively generational comedy that this story so desperately needs. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some thematic elements and brief strong language." RUNNING TIME: 110 minutes. A great story lifelessly told By LINDSAY BAHR Associated Press "Woman in Gold" has a rich story to tell. These characters aren't equipped to deliver the lively generational comedy that this story so desperately needs. The flashbacks, ranging from Maria's
childhood to her early 20s ("Orphan Black's" Tatiana Maslany), are meant to contextualize Maria's plight. We see a spirited girl's life upended by the war, the brutality of the Nazi regime and the faceless indifference of her fellow countrymen. But, seeped in the obligatory sepia and lace, these sequences are as adventurous as a paint-by-numbers, with the exception of a heart-pounding chase sequence. A recurring theme throughout the film is that everyone has forgotten the horrors of the Holocaust — that no one really cares about the living history of so many. It's an interesting question, but "Woman in Gold" doesn't have the guts to go too deep on that or any of the complexities around Maria's quest.
It's still "Fast and Furious" By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge I recently read an article on a theory about why the titles for the Fast & Furious franchise include different combinations of those words and numbers, both spelled out or in numerals. Truthfully, it was a waste of time that drastically overstated the importance of this fun property, but it's been on my mind since I went to see Furious 7 on Easter Sunday and found that the opening credits list it as Furious Seven, a pronunciation I had not see before or since. What focuses me is that movies are my business. Following the tragic death of Paul Walker and friend Roger Rodas in a high-speed, singlevehicle crash in 2013, Universal decided to delay the completion of this movie and ultimately delayed its release for
more than a year, leading to the sad state of affairs in 2014's box office results. I'm glad now, having seen the picture and its touching farewell to the character Walker played, that I'm not as coldly jaded as I've sometimes felt. There are a lot of opinions about the long-running success of these movies that aren't usually about much more than cars driving really fast in the effort to both commit and thwart crime. In fact, one could callously quote series star Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) growling buzz words as a general framework for what they'll see: "Family. Brother. (Car chase). Love. Payback. (Explosion). Family." Furious 7 isn't exactly different from this winning formula that I think thrives on a solid mix of action, humor, sex appeal, and diversity of people both in front of and behind the camera. To succinctly
sum it up, know that it comes in the rather peculiar chronology of the tale somewhere after the events in Tokyo Drift and immediately following the epilogue of 2013's Fast & Furious 6 when Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw is introduced as the man responsible for the death of Han (Sung Kang). Dom and Brian O'Conner (Walker) are drawn back into the game of international crime when Shaw's retaliation comes too close to home and family. They're enlisted by Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) to find a hacker (Nathalie Emmanuel) that can find Shaw with elaborate software that the governments wants back from her. The rub is that she's imprisoned by a warlord (Djimon Hounsou) in Asia. What follows this quick launch is a rat-a-tat of three fantastic action sequences that each last no less than thirty minutes. The first, my favorite,
was teased in the film's trailers and follows an attack on an armored convoy through a mountain pass with steep drops on either side. To sneak in, Dom and the boys (Ludacris and Tyrese Gibson) and Michelle Rodriguez's Letty (natch) drop in via parachuted cars, rip through the prison bus in-transit, and escape a trio of daring crashes with the package. This is followed by a jaunt to Abu Dhabi where a prince's penthouse garage houses a car containing the missing software and it's broken out during his birthday party. This involves, if you can even imagine it, the car shooting through the tower and leaping through two more before crashing off the skyscraper. It's capped with a series of cat-and-mouse subplots wrapping neatly together on the streets of nighttime Los Angeles where all

parties get their chance to shine in a way that is both far-fetched (a fight upon a crumbling parking garage) and slightly sweet. A tacked-on ending shows how much the cast has changed in the fourteen years since The Fast & The Furious roared into multiplexes in 2001. It's final moment is a goodbye of sorts to Walker, a more talented star than most will ever give him credit for being, that is auto-themed and comforting. It left me with both a wet eye and a hope for what might come in Fast & Furious Eight because of life's left turns. Furious 7 runs 152 minutes and is rated PG-13 for prolonged frenetic sequences of violence, action, and mayhem, suggestive content, and brief strong language. I give this film two stars out of four.

The King of Beers There are just some things everyone in the greater St. Louis area should do. Ride to the top of the Gateway Arch, watch a Cardinal game from the bleachers, eat a meal on The Hill. Of course, those things cost money. There are, fortunately, a couple of things you can still do that don't cost a dime. They include a trip to the Saint Louis Zoo and a tour of the AnheuserBusch Brewery. Brewery tours are family traditions in these parts. Visitors to giant A-B complex can marvel at the history of the product, see how the beer is made, get up close to a Clydesdale and, if you are over 21, sample some of the breweries products. Since its founding in 1852 in St. Louis, Anheuser-Busch has been perfecting this process, taking pride in producing some of the world’s finest beers, one batch at a time, the company's website states. You can see how that beer is brewed by taking the tour. Advance tickets are not available as the brewery operates on a first-come, first-serve" basis. Tour hours through May 22 are: Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parking is free in the lot near the gift shop/tour start at 1200 Lynch St. For more information, visit www.budweisertours.com. Religion Religion briefs Personal afterlife accounts removed from Baptist bookstores
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The publishing arm of the Southern Baptist Convention has stopped selling popular accounts of the afterlife like "Heaven is for Real" and "90 Minutes in Heaven" at its national chain of Lifeway Christian Bookstores. Last summer, Southern Baptists at their annual convention warned that such books and films can lead people astray with "personal testimonies that cannot be corroborated" and sometimes conflict with Scripture. They overwhelmingly passed a resolution declaring "the sufficiency of biblical revelation over subjective experiential" accounts of heaven and hell. Lifeway spokesman Marty King says that resolution was taken into consideration and Lifeway stopped ordering personal afterlife accounts last summer. Now, he says, "the remaining heaven visitation items have been removed from our stores and
Jewish leader: US-Israel tensions provoke anti-Semitism
WASHINGTON (AP) — A Jewish leader says recent tensions between the U.S. and Israel have contributed to a rise in global antiSemitism. Friction between President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has grown over policy differences about the creation of a Palestinian state and the U.S.-led international nuclear talks with Iran. The president of the World Jewish Congress, Ronald Lauder, told a congressional committee Tuesday that when people around the world see "even the best friend of Israel is having problems with them," it provokes negative attitudes toward Jews. Lauder said Jews in Europe are increasingly the targets of radical Islamic terrorism like the recent deadly attacks in Paris and

Alabama bill would let adoption agencies turn away gay couples
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama would allow adoption agencies — including those with state contracts — to refuse to place children with same-sex couples on religious grounds, under a bill introduced in the Alabama Legislature. Republican state Sen. Gerald Allen introduced the bill last week specifying that groups could refuse to participate in adoptions and foster care placements that violate their religious beliefs. The bill would also prohibit the state from refusing to license, or contract with, the groups that deny services to people on religious grounds.

The Arts
Theatre on the road
Aurora's historic Paramount announces 2015-16 lineup For The Edge In only four years, the Paramount Theatre's Broadway Series has transformed one of Chicago's most historic Art Deco stages into a musical theater powerhouse, built a loyal audience of now more than 26,000 subscribers and radically altered Chicago's musical theater landscape. To d a y, P a r a m o u n t o ff i c i a l s announced the theater's fifth blockbuster Broadway Series for 2015-16: Oklahoma! (Sept. 16-Oct. 18, 2015), A Christmas Story - The Musical (Nov. 25, 2015-Jan. 3, 2016), Hairspray - The Broadway Musical (Jan. 20-Feb. 21, 2016) and West Side Story (Mar. 16-Apr. 24, 2016). Just as it has been from the start, Paramount will offer the same great "Buy Two Shows, Get Two Shows Free" subscription offer, with fourplay packages starting as low as just $82. The rewards are ample four amazing, Broadway-quality, classic American musicals at one of the most majestic theaters in the Midwest, all for the price of one show downtown. Renewals and pre-sale for Paramount's 2015-16 Broadway Series go on sale today at 10 a.m. Current subscribers (only) can take advantage of a limitedtime offer to add friends and family through April 26. Friends and family will have priority seating before seats are assigned to new subscribers and the general public. New subscriptions to Paramount's 2015-16 Broadway Series go on sale June 1. To renew, purchase pre-sale subscriptions or single tickets, visit ParamountAurora.com, call (630) 896-6666 or visit the Paramount Theatre box office, 23 E. More About Paramount's 2015-16 Broadway Series Artistic Director Jim Corti, the only Chicago theater professional to win a Jeff Award for directing, choreography and acting, will stage Paramount's season opener, Oklahoma!, the sweeping, debut collaboration of Rodgers and Hammerstein, and the season finale, West Side Story, Jerome Robbins's epic musical, and one of the greatest love stories of all time. Corti's previous stagings at Paramount include the current 201415 season finale Les MisĂŠrables, and past smash hits The Who's Tommy, RENT, Miss Saigon, Fiddler on the Roof and My Fair Lady.

Nick Bowling, one of Chicago's hottest young directors, will make his Paramount debut with A Christmas Story, everyone's favorite holiday comedy about little Ralphie and his quest for a Red Ryder BB gun. Bowling is rising fast with his recent string of hits including Porchlight's Sondheim on Sondheim ("4 stars" - Chicago Tribune), The King and I at Marriott and To Master the Art at Timeline, where he is associate artistic director. Amber Mak, one of the city's top actress/director/choreographers, will helm Paramount's plus-sized rock n' pop extravaganza, Hairspray. Mak's credits include choreography for Drury Lane's Singin' in the Rain, and associate director/ choreographer for more than a halfdozen musicals by Rachel Rockwell, including Paramount's smash hit Mary Poppins. As always, Paramount will tap only the highest caliber talent in every aspect of production with actors, designers, creative and technical teams. Each production will also boast the original Broadway orchestrations performed live by the Paramount Orchestra. "For four seasons we have raised the bar for excellence with our very own regional Broadway musical theatre made right here in downtown Aurora," said Corti. "For season five, Paramount will continue celebrating the proud tradition of this beautiful theatre by hosting only the very best theater artists, both on stage and behind the scenes, to let their imaginations soar, to create remarkable musical theater, to realize fresh, bold ideas, and to take our loyal, growing audiences on journeys they will never forget." "In 2010-11, Paramount had 550 subscribers. We took a gamble, brought production in-house, hired Jim Corti to be the theater's firstever artistic director, and launched o u r i n a u g u r a l , s e l f - p ro d u c e d Broadway subscription series," remarked Tim Rater, President and CEO of the Paramount. "Today we are one of the top Equity stages in all of Chicago, with more than 26,000 subscribers. While we still feel we've only just begun, just wait until you see what Paramount has in store for 2015-16. And with four shows for the price of just one show downtown, there's never been a better time to subscribe." 2015-16 Broadway Series: More about the shows Oklahoma! Music by Richard Rodgers B o o k a n d Ly r i c s b y O s c a r Hammerstein II Based on the play "Green Grow the Lilacs" by Lynn Riggs Original Dances by Agnes de Mille Directed by Paramount Artistic Director Jim Corti September 16-October 18, 2015 Press opening Saturday, September 19, 8 p.m. Suggested rating: PG Oklahoma! is the show that set the standard for all future musicals by incorporating music, lyrics and dance into a well-crafted, serious story. It's also the debut collaboration of one of the most prolific writing teams in American theater history - Rodgers and Hammerstein. Set in the turn of the century Oklahoma Territory, tensions are mounting between the local farmers and cowboys over the use of land.
On the Edge of the Weekend
In the midst of it all is the rugged cowboy Curly who's fallen for the strong-headed farm girl, Laurey. Despite their fiery spirits and at times tumultuous relationship, the two are destined to start a new life together in the soon-to-be state called Oklahoma! Nominated for seven Tony Awards and winner of a Pulitzer Prize, Oklahoma! sets the standard for the 2015-16 Paramount Broadway Season. It's filled with some of the most recognized songs in theater including "Beautiful Morning," "Surrey with the Fringe," "People Will Say We're in Love," and of course, the resounding "Ok-lahom-a," - all performed by the Paramount's full-orchestra. Bring the entire family and experience Paramount's Oklahoma!, the production everyone will be talking about this fall. A Christmas Story - The Musical Book by Joseph Robinette Music and Lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul Based on the movie A Christmas Story and In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash Directed by Nick Bowling November 25, 2015-January 3, 2016 Press opening Sunday, November 29, 5:30 p.m. Suggested Rating: PG One of the most watched and beloved holiday movies ever made comes to life in a full-blown musical production on the Paramount stage. It's the story of nine-yearold Ralphie Parker growing up in middle-America in the 1940s. With Christmas right around the corner, Ralphie has his bespectacled sights set on one thing - a Red Ryder BB Gun. But at every turn, the young daydreamer hears those five words that are the bane of his existence: "you'll shoot your eye out." A Christmas Story is a holiday classic filled with laughs, dreams, warmth and family. A story filled with a department store Santa, a Leg Lamp, a snow suit and friends that will never leave your side - even if your tongue is stuck to a flag pole. The music is energetic, unforgettable and ranges from gentle ballads to full-on show-stopping numbers. The imagery takes audiences back to an easier time we often long for, but the message remains the same: family, friendship, love - the holidays are nothing without them. Bring your family and celebrate the holidays with this perfect feel-good musical for the season. Hairspray The Broadway Musical Book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan Music by Marc Shaiman Lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman Based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters Directed by Amber Mak January 20-February 21, 2016 Press opening Saturday, January 23, 8 p.m. Suggested rating: PG Tracy Turnblad is a plus-size teen with plus-size hair, and she has one big plus-size dream - to dance her way onto Baltimore's smash hit TV show, "TheCorny Collins Show." Every day after school, she and best friend Penny bee-line home to watch the cool kids shake the rafters to the hottest tunes on Collins' program. When a dance slot opens on the show, Tracy gets help from her friend Seaweed, who puts

enough groove in her step to win that dream role - and life is never the same again. But Tracy doesn't rest on her stardom; instead she uses her new celebrity to racially integrate the show and change the lives of Baltimore folks forever. Based on the John Waters hit movie, Hairspray is a high-octane ride with thrilling choreography, rockin' tunes and explosively colorful costumes - plus some really cool hairdos. More importantly, under all the glitz, Hairspray reminds us of the importance of individuality and the acceptance of one another: a wonderful message to share with everyone. West Side Story Based on a conception by Jerome Robbins Book by Arthur Laurents Music by Leonard Bernstein Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim Original production choreographed and directed by Jerome Robbins Directed by Paramount Artistic Director Jim Corti March 16-April 24, 2016 Press opening Saturday, March 19, 8 p.m. Suggested rating: PG West Side Story is quite possibly one of the greatest love stories ever to be told in a musical. Set in the blue-collar neighborhood of New York's Upper West Side, racial tensions run high as residents try to grind out a daily living. A turf war is being fought as the Jets, a white gang, and the Sharks, a Puerto Rican gang, battle over boundaries. In the heart of the turmoil, former Jets member Tony meets Maria at a local dance. The chemistry is instantaneous, and for a few hours, there is no race, no hatred, no barriers, just two young people in love. But Maria is the sister of Sharks' leader Bernardo, and no one is going to make it easy for Tony and Maria to escape. From heart-wrenching ballads like "Somewhere" and steamy Latin beats in "America" to the soaring lyrics of "Tonight," West Side Story is a Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim musical masterpiece. The choreography is a fine balance of vicious intensity and romance that will take your breath away. It makes no difference if you've seen West Side Story before or if you've never seen it at all. Like all the shows before them, Paramount's c re a t i v e t e a m w i l l t a k e t h i s production to a level that will make this THE West Side Story you never forget. About The Paramount Theatre The Paramount Theatre (ParamountAurora.com) is the center for performing arts, entertainment and arts education in Aurora, the second largest city in Illinois. Named "One of Chicago's Top 10 Attended Theatres" by the League of Chicago Theatres, the 1,888-seat Paramount, located in downtown Aurora at 23 E. Galena Blvd., is nationally renowned for the quality and caliber of its presentations, superb acoustics and historic beauty. The Paramount opened on September 3, 1931. Designed by nationally renowned theater architects C.W. and George L. Rapp, the theater captures a unique Venetian setting portrayed in the art deco influence of the 1930s. The first air-conditioned building outside of Chicago, the Paramount offered the public a variety of entertainment, including "talking pictures," vaudeville, concerts and circus performances for more than 40 years. In 1976, Aurora Civic Center Authority purchased the Paramount and closed the theater for restoration. The $1.5 million project restored the Paramount to its original grandeur. On April 29, 1978, the Paramount Arts Center opened, offering a variety of theatrical, musical, comedy, dance and family programming. In 2006, a 12,000-square-foot, two-story Grand Gallery lobby was added, with a new, state-of-the-art box office, cafĂŠ and art gallery. Today, the Paramount selfproduces its own Broadway Musical Series, presents an eclectic array of comedy, music, dance and family shows, and on most Mondays, screens a classic movie. The Paramount Theatre is one of three live performance venues programmed and managed by the Aurora Civic Center Authority (ACCA). ACCA also oversees the Paramount's "sister" stage, the intimate, 216-seat Copley Theatre located directly across the street from the Paramount at 8 E. Galena Blvd., as well as RiverEdge Park, d o w n t o w n A u ro r a ' s s u m m e r outdoor concert venue. For tickets and information, go to ParamountAurora.com or call (630) 896-6666.

Joe Page, SIUE Assistant Professor of Ceramics, explained that his students' work displayed in the exhibit is the result of Gesiakowski's and Heerspink's three year intensive study in ceramic art at SIUE. “This exhibition is the culmination of those three years of artistic research,” Page said. There are a total of seven graduate MFA students completing their graduate studies in the department of Art and Design at SIUE. Aside from Heerspink and Gesiakowski, there are three students in metalsmithing, one in sculpture and one in painting. The other five students have been exhibiting their work since March 24 in the art gallery located in the SIUE Art and Design West building. Heerspink's work exists between the domains of engineering and fine art. “Machine parts have a visual formality with their a-symmetrical forms designed out of necessity, while many science fictional machines (space ships and robots) used in television shows and movies are designed for their aesthetic qualities while function is merely implied,” Heerspink wrote in his artist's statement. “This work draws on the notion of implied function. The forms reference mechanical machines without any suggestion as to what the function may be. There is meant to be an understanding of the forms within the work while also being ambiguous and foreign.” Page added that Heerspink's

The EAC exhibit, "Rebuilding Perception," will feature the works of Eric Heerspink, above, and Mike Gesiakowski. work has an “industrial aesthetic.” “So the aesthetics of the factory made or the industrial and mechanical in his work,” Page said. “He's also really interested in playing with different layers
of material – material that unify design language.” Heerspink also makes art out of wood, metal and other found materials. “Like Plexiglas,” Page noted. “He uses a lot of different
materials and he takes those materials and translates that into his own aesthetic language of the industrial and mechanical. So his work, they operate as kind of almost like architectural forms, or they look a little bit like landscapes or like maps.” Gesiakowski's work investigates the process of structural degradation and the links between architecture and human existence. “The work draws inspiration from degraded and weather-worn buildings and their ornamentation: aged stone and terra cotta facades, fractured adornment and other architectural components left to the elements,” Gesiakowski notes in his artist's statement. “My work attempts to capture the enigmatic beauty and the unperceived intricacy of this ongoing process of deterioration.” “My work presents narratives of the human condition, and by creating a connection with manmade structures I hope to reveal correlations between the two,” Gesiakowski added. “Mike is interested in kind of the architecture of place and memory,” Page said of Gesiakowsi. “A lot of his work are a series of tiles or bricks that he has sort of put patterns into. And then through the treatment of surface, he degrades the pattern. They look very weather worn and aged. He's looking at things like the arts and crafts movement and the architectural style of the turn of the 19th century in his work.”
April 16, 2015
And then through the treatment of surface, he degrades the pattern. “The tiles that he makes look like weather worn bricks or tiles from old buildings. You can see the design on the bricks but they are kind of worn away - bleeding and melting away,” Page added. “He's also interested in the concept of memory how a memory is in decay and inaccurate in some ways. We remember some things more vividly than we do others. In some of his work he uses some very bright colors although some of the imagery is beginning to fade.” Page noted that he thought the unifying thread between the Heerspink's and Gesiakowsi's work that makes “Rebuilding Perception” a very cohesive show is that both of the students work with modularity in their work. “There work is comprised of multiple charts that are brought together,” Page said. “Not unlike Legos or blocks - groupings of similar objects that take on a greater meaning when put together than they do as separate entities.” The “Rebuilding Perception” exhibit can be viewed in the Edwardsville Art Center which is located at 6165 Center Grove Road in Edwardsville. The EAC is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Fridays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. The artwork of the Edwardsville District 7 Elementary students will be on display in the Dennis Detoye Student Gallery.
