People People planner Dennis Miller to appear at the Peabody

Five-time Emmy award winner Dennis Miller kicks off the summer with a stop at the Peabody Opera House, Sunday May 18 at 7 p.m.  Tickets go on sale Friday, March 14, at 10 a.m. and prices are $72, $62, $52 and $42.  Tickets available at the Ford Box Office at Scottrade Center, all Ticketmaster Ticket Centers, by phone at 800-745-3000, or online at ticketmaster.com. Since 2007, Dennis Miller has been heard five days a week on his nationally syndicated Dial Global (formerly  Westwood One) Radio talk show, “The Dennis Miller Show.”  He is also a regular contributor for “The O’Reilly Factor” on the FOX News Channel.  It’s been said that Miller is “One of the premiere comedy talents in America today…”  While others are blunt assessing Miller’s comedic stature, Dennis himself makes a virtue of understatement, but there is nothing low key about his career. Miller has won five Emmy awards for his critically acclaimed half-hour, live talk show “Dennis Miller Live” which had a nine year run on HBO. Miller also garnered three Writer ’s Guild of America Awards for the series as well as an additional WGA Award for his 1997 HBO special, “Dennis Miller: Citizen Arcane.”  He also wrote and starred in the Emmy-nominated cable comedy special “Raw Feed.”  That show, along with the six other standup specials he did for HBO from 1988-2006, is featured in the recently released DVD set, “Dennis Miller: The HBO Specials.” His

eighth special for HBO, “Dennis Miller: The Big Speech” debuted last year and is now also available on DVD.  He was the host and executive producer of CNBC’s “Dennis Miller”, a topical interview talk show featuring reasoned discourse, opinion and humor.  Additionally, Miller has appeared on many politically oriented television talk shows.  He has also been cast in films, usually in dramatic roles, most notably in 1994's “Disclosure,” 1995's “The Net,” and 1997's “Murder at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.”  He also appeared in the 2008 release, “What Happens in Vegas.” Dennis has also achieved success in the literary arena with four books, “I Rant Therefore I Am,” “The Rants,” “Ranting Again,” and “The Rant Zone”have all been New York Times best sellers.   For two seasons, Miller called the plays alongside Al Michaels and NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Fouts on ABC’s “Monday Night Football.”  He was also the “Weekend Update” correspondent on “Saturday Night Live” for six years, before exiting in 1991.  He has yet to appear in a show with the words, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday in the title.

People People planner Compton Hill Water Tower welcomes visitors

The historic Compton Hill Water Tower is open for its 15th consecutive season of monthly openings and full moon viewings events.  Located at the intersection of Shaw and Grand Blvd, (exit 288 off I-44), the Tower is open from 12 noon – 4 PM on the first Saturday of each month from April through November.  Visitors can climb to the top of the 179-ft. Tower and enjoy a 360-degree vista of metro St. Louis stretching as far as Illinois, Clayton and the Jefferson Barracks Bridge.  By popular demand, the Tower will again open for full moon evenings, beginning at 5:30PM and extending as late as midnight for most months from April through November.  “Full Moon Weekends” at the Tower in June, July and August will include food trucks, live bands and festivity. Built in 1898 on one of the highest points in the City and fully restored by the City of St. Louis Water Division in 1999, the French Romanesque style Tower was engineered to be part of the city's public water supply system. In 1901, more than 423 water towers existed in the United States; only 7 remain standing, three of which are in St. Louis.  The Compton Hill Water Tower is a designated St. Louis City and a National Historic Landmark. Admission to climb the tower is $5 per person; children 6 to 12 are $3; children five and younger are free.  Water Tower Society members receive free entry as part of membership.   Ample street side parking is available on Russell Blvd. For more information , including the history of the water tower and a schedule openings visit, www. waterfoundation.org. DuQuoin State Fair announces theme

The theme for the 2014 DuQuoin State Fair will be "Love A Fair: Since 1923," the fair's manager announced recently. "If there has ever been a fair that people have loved, it is the DuQuoin State Fair," Fair Manager Shannon Woodworth said.  "Since 1923, millions of people have fallen in love with the sights, sounds and smells of this fair. The relationship this fair has with the people of Southern Illinois is a bond that hasn't been broken for 91 years." The DuQuoin State Fair became a major area attraction almost from its start, but garnered national attention in 1942 when the Illinois State Fair in Springfield was suspended due to the grounds being converted into a World War II training center,

4

explained fair historian Fred Huff. As a result, the Grand Circuit harness program scheduled for Springfield was moved to DuQuoin and for the first time nationallyprominent horses competed there. Horsemen were impressed with the facilities, including trainer-driver Ben White and his Hambletonian winner, Volo Song, as were Grand C i rc u i t o ff i c i a l s w h o p l a c e d DuQuoin on its schedule. Now owning its own Grand Circuit racing dates, the DuQuoin Fair continued to grow, constructing a splendid, 130-stall, horse barn the length of two football fields with a Southern mansion appearance. A new mile-long track was constructed as was an 8,000-seat grandstand, which was completed just in time for use following a mid-summer fire in 1945 that d e s t ro y e d t h e i n i t i a l f a c i l i t y adjacent to the half-mile track that is still in daily use for training purposes.  A basketball-court size stage immediately adjacent to the grandstand was a unique feature and triggered more emphasis being placed on elaborate night shows that soon became a highlight of the fair's may attractions.

Replacing the steady succession of acrobats, jugglers, comics and animal acts that had been the basic attractions for its first 25 years, the fair switched to more prominent entertainers like Mandrake the Magician, Beatrice Kay and Morton Downey. Bob Hope was the first superstar to play at DuQuoin in 1950, but such bookings soon became standard practice with the likes of Eddie Fisher, the Mills Brothers and others gracing the stage.  In 1964, the grandstand entertainment included performances by Ray Price, Skeeter Davis, Jimmy Dickens and Bill Anderson, marking the first time fair management offered country music.     By then, too, the fair had become the new "Home of the Hambletonian" and suddenly was a fixture on the national sports scene.  Motorized racing, which had returned in the late 1940s, was equally prominent. In fact, Indianapolis 500 drivers became regulars in DuQuoin's three days of auto racing.  A.J. Foyt won 100-mile races at DuQuoin in 1960, '61, '63 and '64, the same years he was crowned national champion by the United States Auto Club.

It was a true winning combination:  top entertainers like Hope, Red Skelton, Perry Como and Sammy Davis, Jr., the Hambletonian with the nation's finest 3-year-old trotters, their trainers and drivers, and the likes of Tony Bettenhausen, Don Branson and Norm Nelson challenging Foyt every Labor Day weekend. It has all resulted in an annual "Love A Fair" and the 2014 edition is scheduled for Aug. 22 through Sept. 1.

Flea market returns to Grafton

People People planner Science Center to screen D-Day film

The Saint Louis Science Center and 3D Entertainment Distribution invite audiences to step back in time with the new giant screen theater film D-Day: Normandy 1944, which opens at the Science Center’s OMNIMAX Theater on April 25, 2014. In May 1943, World War II is at its apex. To counter Hitler and the Axis forces, the Allies decide to open a second front on the western side of Europe. The Allied forces, led by U.S. General Eisenhower, have just months to organize the operation code-named “Overlord,” with only a 50/50 chance of success, that will break Hitler’s Atlantic Wall fortress and lead to the Battle of Normandy. Narrated by renowned journalist and author Tom Brokaw, D-Day: Normandy 1944 provides a new, penetrating look at this defining moment in history in a truly unique manner. D-Day itself is well-known, yet few know in detail exactly why and how, from the end of 1943 through August 1944, this became the most important location in the world. “We wanted to make a film to pay tribute to the millions of men and women, soldiers and civilians, who gave their lives for our freedom 70 years ago. Regardless of nationality, virtually everyone today has a parent, grandparent or even a greatgrandparent with a connection to World War II,” explained writer and director Pascal Vuong. “I thought for a long time about how to produce a large format documentary on this subject, and finally found my own way of telling this complex story to family audiences using a brand-new ‘cocktail,’ mixing innovative film techniques.” Blending multiple cinematographic formats, including animation, CGI and stunning liveaction images, D-Day: Normandy 1944 brings this monumental event to the world’s largest screens for the very first time. Exploring science, t e c h n o l o g y, e n g i n e e r i n g a n d mathematics, audiences of all ages, including new generations, will discover from a new perspective in breathtaking OMNIMAX how this landing changed the course of history. “What I was drawn to in this film is that it tells us the story of D-Day in a new way that gives such clarity to one of the most important events in the history of mankind,” said Brokaw. “I originally thought this was going to be another traditional documentary featuring grainy black and white footage, but as soon as I saw the first minutes of this film on the giant OMNIMAX screen, I found it irresistible.” “After seeing this film, we think our audiences will feel a deeper gratitude for the courage and sacrifices of these champions of freedom,” said Bert Vescolani, president and CEO of the Saint Louis Science Center. “And, because we are a science center, we hope our audiences will discover a deeper appreciation of the science, engineering and technology involved in this monumental event.” Over three years in the making and with a budget of $5 million, all live-action sequences for the film were shot exclusively on location in Normandy, France. No fewer than five CGI and visual special effects companies also collaborated under the creative leadership of N3D LAND Films to complete the 43minute film.

Lineup set for Parties in the Park

St. Louis’ original, longest-running outdoor happy hour, Parties in the Park in Downtown Clayton, kicks off its 31st season May 14 and continues on the second Wednesday of each month through September 10.  Parties in the Park will be returning to last year ’s popular location on

Central between Forsyth Boulevard and Maryland Avenue. “The response to last year’s move to Central was unanimous. Everyone loved it,” said Ellen Gale, executive director of the Clayton Chamber of Commerce. “Businesses and restaurants saw an increase in sales and traffic, and those in attendance had a blast.”   Entertainment for the 31st season

Lincoln Museum to exhibit movie props

An exhibit of sets, costumes and props from Steven Spielberg’s award-winning movie “Lincoln” opened recently at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, where it will be on display for years to come. Children can explore the exhibit free of charge when accompanied by an adult. The exhibit, “Lincoln: History to Hollywood,” includes the set for Lincoln’s office, part of Mary Lincoln’s bedroom set, costumes worn by the actors and a variety of props used in the movie. It’s being displayed at Union Station, just across the street from the presidential museum. The station will serve as an annex to the presidential museum where visitors

when accompanied by an adult. The cost for adults is just $5. Adults also have the option of buying the new “full experience” package allowing them to tour the entire presidential library and museum and the new movie exhibit for $15. That’s just $3 more than the basic museum admission price, which is not changing. Lincoln’s office is the key set in the movie. That’s where the president ponders how to pass a constitutional amendment abolishing slavery and pushes his aides to get the job done. The exhibit also includes a vignette of Mary Lincoln’s bedroom, the setting for emotional confrontations between husband and wife. Visitors can see Oscar-nominated costumes for Lincoln, his wife and his son Tad. Props include the stethoscope from the scene of Lincoln’s death, Tad’s toys and gloves used by Daniel Day-Lewis as he portrayed Lincoln. No tax dollars were to move the exhibit from California to Springfield. That expense is being covered by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation.

can tour the exhibit and see video presentations about the movie. “Steven Spielberg is a master story-teller, and ‘Lincoln’ is a classic. Movie buffs of all ages are going to come here to see this exhibit,” said Amy Martin, director of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. “And when they visit, they’re going to be caught up in the fascinating life of our greatest president.” “Lincoln” earned Academy Awards for Daniel Day-Lewis as Best Actor and Rick Carter for Best Production Design. “It is an honor to have this exhibit at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum,” Spielberg said when plans for the exhibit were announced. “When we visited for research on the film, it was our thought that there might be an opportunity to bring such an exhibit to Springfield, and that is now a reality.” The sets and costumes are on loan from DreamWorks Studios. This allows the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum to present the display at minimal cost to visitors. Children can tour the special exhibit at Union Station for free

Both our families provide fun, memorable moments for everyone to enjoy.” Gary Presley was quick to add that… ”Bringing a little of the Dick’s 5 & 10 shopping experience into our family’s theater was one of the easiest decisions we have ever made. O'Jays to perform at The Fox

The O'Jays are living legends… American treasures.   The term "living legend" is often overused and abused, but with The O'Jays, well, there's little argument that the honorable tag truly applies. With their place in modern music secure, The O'Jays could have cruise-controlled to that comfy

(2) Incredibly energetic and dynamic live shows. (3) Mad respect for their Olympian vocals. And (4) their social and political impact on generations and nations. But doing things slowly is not Eddie Levert, Sr., Walter Williams, Sr. and Eric Nolan Grant’s modus operandi. After 40+ years making such international hits as "Back Stabbers," "For The Love Of Money," "Darlin' Darlin' Baby," "Love Train," "I Love Music," "Use Ta Be My Girl" and "Have You Had Your Love Today,". There have been “four faces” of The O’Jays. This vocal group from Canton, Ohio originated with Eddie Levert, SR., Walter Williams, SR., William Powell, Bobby Massey and Bill Isles and they were named after Cleveland DJ Eddie O’Jay. Isles left the group in 1965. Massey left to b e c o m e a re c o rd p ro d u c e r i n 1971 and Levert, Williams and Powell continues as a trio. Powell retired from touring due to illness in late 1975, passing at the age of 35 in 1977 and was replaced by Sammy Strain, formerly with Little Anthony & The Imperials. Strain returned to his former group in 1993 and was replaced by Nathaniel Best. After the departure in 1995 of Nathaniel Best, Eddie Levert, SR. and Walter Williams, SR. reached out to Eric Nolan Grant, a gifted vocalist who was already a part of the group’s extended Cleveland-based musical family. The Fox to welcome The Piano Guys

AEG Live & Nine Network presents The Piano Guys Oct. 18 at 8 p.m. Live at The Fox Theatre. Tickets are $103, $47.50, $42.50 and $32.50 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314534-1111, or in person at the Fox Theatre Box Office. Hailing from Utah, The Piano Guys became an Internet sensation by way of their immensely successful series of strikingly original self-made music videos. They’ve made over 35 since joining forces in early 2011, including their hit video, an innovative 10-handed version of One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful.” But it’s the Guys’ highly original blend of classical music with pop that has really been the cause of an Internet phenomenon that has brought them to their major label debut album, The Piano Guys, released on Sony Masterworks on October 2nd, 2012. In the last few months, The Piano Guys have performed on everywhere from “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” to “The Today Show” and “Katie.”  Their most recent video “Mission Impossible” featuring YouTube violin sensation Lindsey Stirling, continues to build momentum with over 1.5M views in a month. It finds the band and Stirling in a spy thriller as covert operatives while playing their unique take on this famous musical theme.  The album features more of the imaginative mash-up arrangements that The Piano Guys are already famous for, including sources ranging from Michael Jackson to Mozart, The Bourne Identity to David Guetta. It also includes an original song and innovative takes on hits by One Direction, Adele and Christina Perri. But just who are The Piano

Guys? Actually, there’s only one piano player, Jon Schmidt, and one other instrumentalist, Steven Sharp Nelson, on cello. Yet the other two - Paul Anderson, and Al van der Beek - are equally significant members of the group. The Piano Guys’ name comes from Anderson’s piano store in St. George, Utah, which was called The Piano Guys. Looking for an alternative to lowyield conventional advertising, Anderson devised a Facebook promotional page and YouTube channel featuring the most famous pianist he could find – local pianist, Jon Schmidt. A selfdescribed “New Age Classical” player, Schmidt was indeed wellestablished locally, thanks to eight albums and seven piano books of his song transcriptions. He also performed concerts throughout Utah, one of which featured a young guest artist, Steven Sharp Nelson, who adventurously combined traditional cello playing with percussion effects. “I was 15 when I met Jon and started playing with him,” Nelson recalls. “I had to get a ride to shows! But we’ve had a great brotherhood that’s now lasted 20 years.”

O.A.R., Phillips to appear at The Fox

Rock band O.A.R. and Platinum-selling recording artist and "American Idol" Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips announced today a 25-city co-headlining tour which kicks off on June 12th at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis, and culminates on July 26th at Chastain Park Amphitheatre in Atlanta, Georgia.  Tickets for the 8 p.m. show are $52.50, $47.50, $42.50, $37.50 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-534-1111, or in person at the Fox Theatre Box Office. O.A.R. is renowned for their incredible live shows and sell-out performances at massive venues such as Red Rocks and Madison Square Garden.  The band has just wrapped up production on a brand new album – The Rockville LP – which is set for release June 10th on Vanguard Records.  The anthemic song “Peace,” the debut

single from The Rockville LP, is climbing the charts and has already become a mainstay on radio station playlist across the country.   Since their formation in 1996, O.A.R. This year the festival theme celebrates “Blues by the Lake,” with three days of the finest blues music featuring headliners Carolina Chocolate Drops, Otis Taylor Band and a special celebration commemorating the centennial of John Lee “Sonny Boy” Williamson featuring Billy Boy Arnold and The Siegel-Schwall Blues Band with Sam Lay. Also headlining, Theo Huff, Willie Clayton, Bettye LaVette Nikki Hill, Aaron Neville and Dr. John. The free admission Chicago Blues Festival is open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily. The Petrillo Music Shell will feature headliners at 6 p.m. – 9.30 p.m. on Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14. The stage will run 5:30 p.m. – 9.30 p.m. on Sunday, June 15. The Petrillo Music Shell will open on Friday, June 13 at 6 p.m. with the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Originating from Durham, North Carolina, the trio is deeply rooted in the old-time, fiddle and banjobased music which won them the Grammy Award for best traditional folk album in 2010 for Genuine Negro Jig. As the evening continues, blues fans will be treated to a ground-breaking performance from the Otis Taylor Band at 7:05 p.m. followed by a special tribute and centennial celebration honoring John Lee “Sonny Boy” Williamson

at 8:25 p.m. performed by a group of musicians influenced by his harmonica “crossed-harp” style led by renowned harmonica player Billy Boy Arnold, who played with “Sonny Boy.” Artists joining Arnold include the Siegal-Schwall Blues Band with bassist Rolo Radford and drummer Sam Lay, Marcella Detroit, Billy Branch and Omar Coleman. Blues singer extraordinaire Bettye LaVette headlines the Petrillo stage on Saturday, June 14, taking the stage at 8:15 p.m. By the age of sixteen, American soul singer Bettye LaVette started her rise to fame with her first single “My Man, He’s a Loving Man,” which quickly created a national buzz. Throughout her more than 50-year career, LaVette has recorded multiple hit songs establishing her as one of the genre’s great vocalists. Also performing at the Petrillo Music Shell on Saturday, June 14 is vocalist Theo Huff at 6 p.m. With over 20 years of dedication to the rhythm and blues, Huff has graced the stage with some of the greatest Soul and R&B singers of today including, Koko Taylor, Millie Jackson, Albertina Walker and many more. Following Theo Huff is a star- singer-songwriter and producer, Willie Clayton at 6:55 p.m. Considered by critics and fans to be one of the last great “Soul” men, fans at the Petrillo Music Shell are in for a treat. Opening the evening on Sunday, June 15 at 5:45 p.m. is vocalist Nikki Hill. Hill and her band of enthused musicians known as the “Pirate Crew” are quickly claiming a large following. With husband Matt Hill

Having been called the “Southern Fireball,” Hill will get festivalgoers up and out of their seats. Dr. John and Aaron Neville will close the Chicago Blues Festival on Sunday, June 15 with the sound of the “Big Easy.” Music legend Aaron Neville is back in the spotlight with the recent release of his new album, My True Story. Neville revisits the doo-wop music he grew up with and created throughout his incredible career as a solo artist – and his role in the first family of New Orleans, Louisiana, music: the Neville Brothers. Neville will take the stage at 6:45 p.m. Since the 1970s, Malcolm John Rebennack has been known to boogie and blues enthusiasts as Dr. John. Hailing from New Orleans, Louisiana, Dr. John’s music is influenced by his southern roots resulting in the unconscious creation of his own brand of “voodoo” music, which made him a musical icon. Dr. John will close the evening at 8:15 p.m. The popular day stages contribute to the festival’s reputation as an internationally acclaimed event. Each stage features local and national blues musicians celebrating the genres rich tradition and heritage. Stages and performance times are: Bud Light Crossroads Stage, 11:15 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.; The Jackson Rhythm and Blues Stage, 11:30 a.m. –7:30 p.m. and Pepsi Front Porch Stage, noon – 5:30 p.m. The Bud Light Crossroads Stage will be swinging when rising star, Guy King performs at 12:45 p.m. on Friday, June 13. The vocalist has performed in various venues and festivals throughout Chicago and internationally, such as the Basel Blues Festival in Switzerland and the Montreal Blues Festival. Following his performance is guitarist James Armstrong at 2:30 p.m. Born to a blues singer and jazz guitarist, the Louisiana native was born to play the blues and today, Armstrong travels the world performing at different venues and festivals serenading blues fans with his unique fusion of vocals and seasoned guitar playing. On Saturday, June 14 a high energy performance by Selwyn Birchwood at 2:30 p.m. will win over the crowd of eager blues

fans. Highlights during the day on Sunday, June 15 include a stellar performance by the blues siblings and Mississippi natives, Homemade Jamz Blues Band at 11:15 a.m. Later that evening, the Smiley Tillmon Band will close out the Bud Light Crossroads stage at 4:15 p.m. with their funky jams and raw improvisational intensity leaving spectators with no choice, but to dance and sing along. Fans will travel to the southland at the Jackson Rhythm and Blues Stage as Mississippi natives Ben Payton, Mr. Sipp “the Mississippi Blues Child” and Vick Allen take the stage back-to-back on Friday, June 13 beginning at 1p.m . Through Peyton’s unique styling on the acoustic guitar, the vocals of the “Mississippi Blues Child” and the velvet voice of soul from Allen, blues enthusiasts at the Jackson Rhythm and Blues are in-store for an earful of outright great music. On Saturday, June 14, stage will be filled with blues, soul, funk and a “whole lotta” rhythm with the Southern Komfort Brass Band performs at 2:30 p.m. and Mississippi native and vocalist Dexter Allen takes the stage at 4 p.m. The day closes with a jam session featuring Grammy® award winning drummer, Kenny “Beedy Eyes” Smith. The music continues with the ladies on Sunday, June 16 for the final day with back-to-back performances from three dynamic vocalists Lady L, Pat Brown and Dorothy Moore from 1– 4 p.m. The festivities kick off at the Pepsi Front Porch on Friday, June 13 featuring Harmonica Hinds at 1:30 p.m. and Cicero Blake at 3 p.m. and continuing on Saturday, June 14 with the Matthew Skoller Band at 1:30 p.m. At 3 p.m. an international collaboration of artists from Chicago and Italy will perform a special Tribute to blues guitarist Phil Guy, featuring Dario Lombardo, Deloris Scott and Friends of the Phil Guy Band. Guy is the younger brother of Chicago blues guitarist Buddy Guy. Starting at noon on Sunday, June 15, the Pepsi Front Porch stage will kick off with Chicago native and harmonica great, Diamond Jim Greene. Audience members will get a second chance to see Kenny “Beedy Eyes” Smith when he performs as a part of the Chicago Delta Blues Band with Bob Stroger, Barrelhouse Chuck and Billy Flynn at 3 p.m.

April 24, 2014

For The Edge The 11th annual Greater St. Louis Jazz Festival runs April 2426 and features headliners Arturo Sandoval, The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra, and Reggie Thomas and Rodney Whitaker. The three-day festival encourages the musical education and growth of the participating students by interacting with these internationally acclaimed jazz artists. “In 11 years, we’ve become one of the most significant jazz festivals in the Midwest,” said the festival’s Artistic Director Jim Widner. “And it’s the only festival of its kind in St. Louis, combining education and professional performance. Festival students will perform on the same stages as the biggest names in professional jazz.” In the past few years, UMSL, the Touhill and Jazz St. Louis have joined forces to produce an enhanced festival, expanding the headliners and student performances. The 2014 headliner performances begin with an all-star quartet presented by Jazz St. Louis and featuring pianist Reggie Thomas, bassist Rodney Whitaker and St. Louis area greats Willie Akins on tenor sax and Montez Coleman on drums at Jazz at The Bistro on Thursday. The Rock Restaurant a satisfying dining experience in Normal By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge

O

n a recent trip to Normal while following the Edwardsville Tiger wrestling team in the postseason, I was looking for a local hot spot to write a food review on and came up with The Rock Restaurant. The Rock is a staple in Normal from what I learned from reviews and Yelp, and it was immediately evident when I could barely walk in the door due to the line of customers. There were only a couple of open tables, too. The Rock is found at 203 W. North St. in Normal and has a delistyle feel to it. The menu is filled with Mediterranean and American fare. There is anything from falafel, to gyros, to hummus, to burgers and hot dogs. I decided to check out a selection that was raved about in Yelp reviews — the garlic chicken pita. But first I had to test out an appetizer after a long drive. There was an extensive selection of choices on the appetizer portion of the menu, including: mozzarella sticks, fried mushrooms, jalapenó poppers, fries, cheese fries, onion rings and popcorn chicken to name a few. I went with the cheese balls. I’ve brought you many distinct and yummy options in fried appetizers during my time with “You Gotta Eat” with such favorites as fried portabella mushrooms, fried pickles and sweet corn nuggets, but this was my first venture reviewing fried cheese. To be honest I was a little disappointed, not because it was bad, but because it wasn’t very creative. (After all I don’t think

fried cheese can taste bad). With the variety of items on the menu at The Rock I thought there would be a blend of cheeses wrapped inside a golden brown cocoon. Unfortunately, it was just good ole breaded American cheese, there was no extra spice or uniqueness to it at all. Like I said, it still had a good taste, but I wasn’t just looking for good taste, I was looking for memorable. I got a side of marinara dipping sauce which was good on the cheese balls also. Due to the bustling atmosphere

on my visit, I had to wait a while to get my main course, the garlic chicken pita. When it arrived it was large with a healthy portion of ingredients and I quickly took a bite which I expected to be heavy on garlic and surprisingly it wasn’t. It included grilled chicken breast with the homemade garlic sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and French fries, wrapped inside the Lebanese pita bread. Truthfully, it was the pickles that overtook the taste of the garlic, but it was very satisfying. Everything was very

fresh and once I pulled a fry out to try I realized the mistake I had made in my appetizer choice. The fries at The Rock are fantastic. They are crispy and seasoned to have a savory taste. Overall my meal was very satisfactory and not too expensive. I paid a total of $13.25, but the cheese balls were a little pricey at $4.39. There were plenty of options on the menu though, and plenty that were cheaper and many that were unique. On the burger portion of the

April 24, 2014

menu there was the six ounce and half pound gyro cheeseburger. It offered a beef patty topped with gyro meat (lamb and beef) and served with lettuce, onions, tomatoes, pickles, ketchup, mustard, mayo and tzatziki sauce. The Mediterranean section of the menu has a gyro, a chicken gyro, falafel, grape leaves and a half-pound baba ghannoush. The baba ghannoush is comprised of a creamy eggplant spread made with tahini sauce, olive oil, lemon juice and garlic with a pita. A super sandwich portion of the menu delved into the hot dog choices. The super hot dog is made Chicago-style with a 12-inch dog on a bun with pickles, onions, tomatoes, sport peppers, relish, mustard and celery salt. There was also a super gyro. a super Philly cheese steak, super cheeseburger and super tenderloin. There is also a list of regular sandwiches that includes: an Italian beef sandwich, smaller hot dogs, grilled and buffalo chicken sandwiches, a fish sandwich and the challenger to name some. The challenger has grilled chicken breast, mixed with onions, mushrooms, green peppers and jalapenós topped with barbecue sauce and provolone cheese served on a pita. I wish I would have had the time or the appetite to check out the dessert menu, too. It included baklava, lady fingers, chocolate chip cookies, assorted cheesecakes and maamoul, a shortbread pastry filled with your choice of pistachios, walnuts, or dates. Overall, The Rock Restaurant was pretty satisfying and it’s intriguing with the options it offers. I would go back, the staff was friendly, the food was good and there is so much to choose from it’s a great place to go when you gotta eat.

Religion Religion briefs Obama to faith leaders: No immigration fix planned

WA S H I N G T O N ( A P ) — P r e s i d e n t Barack Obama has told religious leaders that he has no plans to make unilateral changes to the nation’s immigration laws. That’s according to the Rev. Luis Cortes, p re s i d e n t o f t h e H i s p a n i c f a i t h - b a s e d organization Esperanza. He was among six religious leaders who met with Obama in the Oval Office Tuesday. Wesleyan, Baptist and Mormon leaders also were there. Cortes says Obama told them that “he would not be doing anything to change the law as it currently exists.” The president’s comments come as advocates press the White House to take executive actions to halt some deportations given that immigration reform efforts on Capitol Hill are stalled. NEW YORK (AP) — The New Yo r k P o l i c e D e p a r t m e n t s a y s i t h a s disbanded a special unit whose efforts to try to detect terror threats in Muslim communities through secret surveillance sparked outrage. LONDON (AP) — The English city of Birmingham has expanded its probe into an alleged Muslim plot to greatly expand Islamic influence in the city’s schools. The investigation announced Monday will look into 25 schools after more than 200 complaints were received. The complaints focus on allegations made in an anonymous letter known as Operation Trojan Horse that was leaked. It claimed that a group of radical Muslims had plans to force out teachers and administrators who resisted plans to increase the observance of Islamic customs in schools. The letter’s authenticity has not been verified. QuickGlance Movie Reviews

"Under the Skin"

To say that a movie feels like a dream is not automatically a positive statement. It all depends on the dream. Some dreams, for example, make sense, at least partly, and others are just baffling. Some are compelling, others tedious. Some move quickly, and others feel like they’re never going to end. Alas, Jonathan Glazer’s “Under the Skin” begins with a lot of the positive attributes mentioned above, but seems to settle into the negative ones as time goes on. It may feel like a dream, but it eventually feels like one you’re sorta ready to wake up from. However — and this is a significant “however” — the film stars Scarlett Johansson. And who among us would not seek to welcome Ms. Johansson into our dreams, or share hers? Johansson’s performance isn’t simply the best thing about the movie, it’s the movie’s raison d’etre. And this charismatic actress, who’s worth watching no matter what she does, delivers a thoughtful, sometimes even mesmerizing turn as, yes, an alien preying on human males in Glasgow, Scotland. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America “for graphic nudity, sexual content, some violence and language.” Running time: 107 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier"

For the latest Marvel release, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” most fan boys might prefer a Consumer Reports-style product review. New character introductions: Smooth. Action sequences: Excellent if sometimes lacking finesse. Viewer satisfaction: Likely high. Box-office prospects: Bankable. Teasers for future Marvel installments: Yes, two. With slick design and plushy interiors, “The Winter Soldier” is an excellent product. But is it a good movie? Are the two indistinguishable at this point? Like the recent “Thor: The Dark World,” “Winter Soldier” is a sequel to a pre-“Avengers” franchise starter. The earlier “Captain America: First Avenger” was a mostly clever period film, set in the ‘40s and awash with a charming WWII thriller nostalgia. “Winter Soldier” brings Steve Rogers — the weakling recruit made a brawny Greatest Generation icon, played by Chris Evans — up to present day for a Washington D.C. conspiracy thriller. Fittingly, Marvel has attracted the default hero of such films, Robert Redford. He’s a major get for the franchise, especially since (unlike in last year’s “All is Lost”) he’s actually talking now. While Rogers runs laps around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and jots notes on the pop culture he missed while frozen for 70 years, there’s trouble brewing at S.H.I.E.L.D. Its head, Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson), believes something is amiss with the agency’s latest project: a trio of “helicarriers” that can kill evildoers from the sky even before the evil is done. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “intense sequences of violence, gunplay and action throughout.” Running time: 136 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"The Railway Man"

There are, of course, different ways to make war movies. Some are sweeping, some more intimate. Some are visceral and

18

On the Edge of the Weekend

raw, and some take a more understated approach. There are moments that “The Railway Man,” starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman and directed by Jonathan Teplitzky, feels like a period TV drama — slow, subtle, a bit distant — but that doesn’t detract from the ultimate power of its story, which is both remarkable and true. It also doesn’t detract from Firth’s nuanced and ultimately quite moving performance, as well as an admirable turn by the talented Jeremy Irvine as a younger version of the same man. (Kidman, on the other hand, feels somewhat wasted in an underwritten part.) “The Railway Man” is based on the autobiography of Eric Lomax, a British Army officer who was brutally tortured at a Japanese POW camp during World War II. Lomax somehow survived — unlike many fellow soldiers — but came home broken and haunted, particularly by his ordeal at the hands of one sadistic Japanese interpreter. In his book, Lomax, who died in 2012 at age 93 (during editing of this film), chronicles what happened when he was able to confront the interpreter in person, many years after the war’s end. Without giving away too much, the final resolution is both stunning and cathartic, and the movie conveys its full emotional resonance — even if it takes a long while to reach that level of intensity. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America “for disturbing prisoner of war violence.” RUNNING TIME: 108 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Rio 2"

A vivid and delightful animated spectacle, “Rio 2” is chockfull of colorful 3-D wonder and jubilant musical numbers set against a tale of family dynamics and environmental dilemmas. The sequel opens with a vibrant New Year ’s Eve bash, as partying in the music-filled streets of Rio de Janeiro is punctuated by fireworks bursting above the Christ the Redeemer statue. Supervised by composer John Powell, more emphasis has been placed on the music of this film, which benefits from numbers by artists like Bruno Mars (who also voices the smooth bird Roberto in the film), Janelle Monae and celebrated Brazilian musician Carlinhos Brown. After mating in Brazil in 2011’s “Rio,” rare macaws Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) and Jewel (Anne Hathaway) now have three lively kids who have become accustomed to the same domestication Blu was brought up on in Minnesota. They’re attached to gadgets like iPods and eat pancakes for breakfast, which irks the raised-in-the-wild Jewel. But the family heads off to the Amazon rainforest, to Jewel’s delight and Blu’s strife, when they get wind that a tribe of blue macaws may live there and are being pursued by Blu’s past owner and animal lover, Linda (voiced by Leslie Mann), and her husband, Tulio (Rodrigo Santoro). With a few of the quirky supporting characters from the first film in tow — including birds voiced by George Lopez (as frisky toucan Rafael) and Jamie Foxx and will.i.am (as rapping canary-and-cardinal duo Nico and Pedro) — they soar through a dazzling journey to the rainforest, making the oftenwasted 3-D effect worth it as we take in the broad scope and graphically layered flair. RATED: G by the Motion Picture Association of America. RUNNING TIME: 101 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Heaven Is for Real"

Continuing the recent trend of faith-based films, including “Noah” and “Son of God,” “Heaven Is for Real” is a sweet tale based on a 4-year-old boy’s account of his

April 24, 2014

trip to heaven that’s likely to please the devout, but won’t entice religious cynics. There’s little doubt the T.D. Jakes-produced adaptation of Todd Burpo’s Christian non-fiction best-seller will have a built-in audience, especially on Easter weekend. After undergoing harrowing surgery for a ruptured appendix, young Colton Burpo (Connor Corum) begins recalling his journey for his family: Angels carried him to heaven where he met Jesus (played by Mike Mohrhardt, whose face we never quite see), as well as God, Colton’s great-grandfather and the miscarried sister he never knew he had. Such talk frightens his older sister (Lane Styles) and worries his pastor father, Todd (Greg Kinnear), and mother, Sonja (Kelly Reilly). As Colton becomes more verbal about his supposed encounter, the local paper in the small Nebraska town starts reporting the story. This leads some members of Todd’s congregation (Thomas Haden Church and Margo Martindale) to turn against the Burpo family. Though Todd sticks up for his son, his faith is also tested. “We ask these kids to believe this stuff,” he says to his wife, “but I don’t even know if I believe it myself.” But Todd is captivated, as we are, by his son’s innocence — especially when Colton tells him things he couldn’t possibly know, such as how he saw his parents cope, each in their own way, during his near-fatal surgery. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for “thematic material including some medical situations.” RUNNING TIME: 100 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"Transcendence"

First, we had Scarlett Johansson as a human-like operating system. Now, Johnny Depp has been uploaded. If the singularity — when artificial intelligence surpasses human smarts — is indeed coming, at least it has decent taste in movie star avatars. First-time director Wally Pfister ’s “Transcendence” isn’t so much the “Him” to Spike Jonze’s “Her” as it’s a more dystopian vision of the meeting of human consciousness an d computer intelligence. It tur n s out that wh en computers get sophisticated, worse things can happen than Joaquin Phoenix getting his feelings hurt. But whereas “Her” was playful and personal about familiar futuristic concepts, “Transcendence” is clunky and lifeless. It’s like the movie version of a paranoid TED talk. In the early scenes of “Transcendence,” Dr. Will Caster (a disappointingly sleepy Depp) is a TED-style master of the universe, speaking confidently in front of large video screens to eager listeners about neurology and artificial intelligence. But there are also protesters to his potentially all-powerful invention: the Physically Independent Neural Network (PINN), an early artificial intelligence propelled by a room full of computers that Caster believes could, among other things, cure cancer. An assassination attempt with a radiation-laced bullet leaves Caster with weeks to live. Desperate to keep his mind alive, his loyal, sycophantic wife and fellow researcher Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) uploads Caster ’s brain to a PC with PINN hardware. Helping her is their good friend and colleague Max (Paul Bettany, serving as narrator). RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “sci-fi action and violence, some bloody images, brief strong language and sensuality.” RUNNING TIME: 119 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

This image released by The Weinstein Company shows Colin Firth in a scene from "The Railway Man."

"The Railway Man" a moving work By JOCELYN NOVECK Associated Press There are, of course, different ways to make war movies. Some are sweeping, some more intimate. Some are visceral and raw, and some take a more understated approach. (Kidman, on the other hand, feels somewhat wasted in an underwritten

part.) “The Railway Man” is based on the autobiography of Eric Lomax, a British Army officer who was brutally tortured at a Japanese POW camp during World War II. The “railway” in the title refers to more

than one thing. As a child, we learn, Lomax was enthralled by trains. During the war, trains became a source of agony as he and his comrades, in captivity in Thailand, were forced to work under inhuman conditions on the infamous Death Railway, built by the Japanese with forced labor to link Bangkok with Rangoon, Burma. But Lomax’s fascination with trains endured. We first meet him in 1980 at a veterans’ club in northern England, seemingly a shell of a man, who spends his time obsessing with train timetables. In a train compartment one day, he meets Patti (Kidman), who promptly starts bringing him out of his shell. It’s a pleasure to see Lomax’s reserve slowly melt and reveal some of his inner charm. And revealing charm, we know, is something Firth does very well indeed.

Soon the two are married, apparently ready for middle-aged happiness. But Lomax is a damaged man, and war flashbacks show us why. The young Lomax (Irvine, terrific at portraying courage and fear all at once) is a resourceful soldier, and he uses his talents to secretly build a radio receiver so that he and fellow POWs can get news of the war in Europe. It works, but when the radio is discovered, retribution against Lomax is swift and terrible. Waterboarding is part of his torture regimen, at the hands of the merciless Nagase (played by Tanroh Ishida as a young man). Back in the 1980s, Lomax struggles with the memories, which make him both desperate and bitter toward Patti. She seeks answers from her husband’s war buddy, Finlay (Stellan Skarsgard), who has his own demons.

"Draft Day" finishes on a high note By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge Barely a quarter of the way into 2014, Kevin Costner has had three movies out. If any of them had been better than they were, it could be called a career resurgence. Instead, he had bizarre or too short roles in a pair of thrillers ("3 Days to Kill" and "Jack Ryan") and now headlines "Draft Day" - the best of the three - but a football movie that isn't necessarily for football fans. For an actor well loved for his sports movie roles ("Field of Dreams," "Bull Durham"), Costner this time plays an executive that loves football but has to treat it like the business it is. It's a struggle at times for the audience to empathize. For love of the game,

maybe he should stick to movies that are about baseball. Don't get me wrong, "Draft Day" has a heavy football theme. But if you're looking for actual backfield drop-backs and deep bombs to the end zone, you're in for some major disappointment. There may be two full minutes of combined game play in this picture, but it's 100 percent game tape from former contests. Instead, the movie is about the shenanigans that take place in war rooms within thirty-two NFL stadiums where teams of scouts, analysts, accountants, and general managers try to figure out which players they need, that they want, and that they can get before the teams picking ahead of them dash their plans to pieces. It's somewhat fascinating. I even have a distant

interest in this phenomenon every April even though I know less about college football players than any other human being on the planet. Sonny Weaver, Jr. (Costner) is the general manager for the Cleveland Browns. He's not a beloved figure in town, having had the guts to fire his own (now recently deceased) father, a long-time head coach and local hero. On the day of the draft, Sonny's life gets off to a rocky start when his colleague/secret girlfriend, Ali (Jennifer Garner), tells him that she's pregnant. With the weight of that on his mind, he still has to figure out which direction the team is going to take with their seventh overall pick. It's a pretty position for a team on the brink of both success and collapse. A good

draft could change their fortunes for years to come and the city is waiting with baited breath. And then something magical happens. The Seattle Seahawks come calling with the Number One overall pick and trade it to Sonny for his next three years' worth of first round picks. It's a steep price, but one that promises to make the splash demanded by Cleveland's clueless, entitled owner (Frank Langella). Destined to go first is a sharp Wi s c o n s i n q u a r t e r b a c k ( J o s h Pence) that every team would love to have. But Sonny Weaver is nothing if not indecisive. Maybe he'll take the running back legacy (Arian Foster, an actual NFLer with the Houston Texans) of a former Cleveland player. He spends the whole day hemming and hawing

April 24, 2014

over what to do. Can he please the team, his hotheaded new coach (James Woods) and himself? He seeks counsel in odd places like from his shrewish mother (Ellen Burstyn) and the defensive player he really wants to take (Chadwick Boseman). Even Browns greats Bernie Kosar and Jim Brown cameo for full effect. The last minute wheeling and dealing that Sonny does while his team is "on the clock" is really what this movie is all about and the ending is a thrilling spectacle of the people that work behind the scenes of our favorite sports. "Draft Day" runs 109 minutes and is rated PG-13 for brief strong language and sexual references. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.

"The Way Things Go" Kemper to host summer exhibit For The Edge A fuse burns, a tire rolls free. It crosses rough-hewn teeter-totters, knocks over a ladder and collides with an oil drum. A lit candle, mounted on wheels, skitters down a wooden ramp and ignites a small explosion. In The Way Things Go (1987), conceptual artists Peter Fischli and David Weiss play with the idea of chain reaction. The film, which runs approximately 30 minutes, choreographs everyday objects and elemental forces—fire, air, gravity and corrosive liquid—into a long, continuous series of kinetic events. The result is at once humorous and mesmerizing, ingenious and elegant—a slapstick meditation on themes of order and chaos. This summer, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum will present The Way Things Go in the exhibition Moving Parts: Time and Motion in Contemporary Art. Drawn primarily from the permanent collection, Moving Parts features a number of the Kemper Art Museum's recent acquisitions as well as rarely seen works designed to heighten our perceptual experience of the world and destabilize received notions of space and time. The exhibition opens with “Actual and Optical Movement,” a selection of works that use motion to reflect the ever-shifting nature of physical and metaphorical points of view. Man Ray’s iconic Lampshade (Spiral) (1919/1964) twists and turns with every breeze while Robert Breer’s Float (1972) motors almost imperceptibly about the gallery. In Equinox (1965), painter Gene Davis syncopates hot and cool colors to

create a sense of optical vibration. Conversely, in his intricate Field of Vision II (2012), sculptor Jeppe Hein uses mirrored steel to fracture one’s sense of visual expectation. “Process and Performance,” the second section, challenges the idea of the artwork as a static, unchanging object. Hans Haacke’s Grass Cube (1967) is an acrylic plastic box topped by a small, growing lawn. Dieter Roth and Daniel Spoerri both use food, and its eventual decay, as sculptural material. In his Subway Drawings, William Anastasi cedes control of his pencil to the bumps and sways of mass transit while Rivane Neuenschwander, in After the Storm (12) (2010), recruits wind and rain to reshape the map of New York State.

The third and final section section, “Arrested Time and Sequence,” contests the supposedly static nature of still photography. In Exposure #106: N.Y.C., Broome & Crosby Streets, 04.17.13, 2:29 p.m. (2013), Barbara Probst deploys a dozen cameras to capture 12 simultaneous perspectives on a single instant. Spencer Finch’s 48 Views of Loch Ness (1997), shot in Scotland at random intervals over the course of three days, contemplates the relativity of perception—what we see versus what we think we see— through an engagement with the optical effects of light and water. Ed Ruscha’s Every Building on the Sunset Strip (1966) is a 25-footlong accordion-fold book featuring two continuous views of the Los

Angeles thoroughfare. Shot in a sequential fashion, on black-andwhite motion picture film, the book has been likened to “a movie in still images" and powerfully captures the sense of cruising this iconic, mileand-a-half-long section of Sunset Boulevard.

HATE YOUR Imagine ... • No more mask • No more hose • No surgery

• No more noise • No replacement parts • No air pressure

• No more embarrassment • Kiss your spouse • Nothing on your face

Sleep apnea affects almost every family in America. Most people with this condition are instructed to use a mask and hose (CPAP therapy) to force air down the nose and throat. The majority of people told to use a CPAP do not like it and about half stop using the device within a week. Most people are not aware that there is another answer! Oral appliance therapy is a very successful treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. It is a comfortable and discreet way to achieve rejuvenating sleep, gain energy during the day and travel comfortably. Today’s oral appliances are over 90% successful and have been recommended by the America Academy of Sleep Medicine since 2006.

“I used a CPAP for about 10 years. It was restrictive and cumbersome and would keep me awake at times during the night. I learned about the oral sleep appliance at a local seminar. My appliance is very natural to wear, helps me sleep better and I no longer snore. I felt better the first night I used it. My appliance is well worth the cost, especially considering my health and well-being are at stake. I’ve found the staff at Dentistry Wtih TLC to be professional and Dr. Smith is very personable. Her expertise in dental care is evident in the care she takes with her patients.” -Terry C., Troy, IL

“I tried to use a CPAP but couldn’t get used to it because it was too binding and made me claustrophobic. I got used to my oral appliance in just one night! It’s very easy to put on, I can move around in bed and sleep in any position I want. I no longer snore! This helps me and my husband sleep better. The staff at Dentistry With TLC are so friendly that I have them do all my dental work too.”

Dr. Anna Smith has over 95% success with oral appliance therapy. She provides more Somnomed oral sleep appliances than any dentist in the United States. She began treating people with sleep apnea about six years ago when her husband was diagnosed. He couldn’t tolerate the CPAP and didn’t want to have painful surgery. Dr. Smith made him an oral appliance and they have both been sleeping better ever since. Dr. Smith has been interviewed on Channel 4’s “Great Day St. Louis,” Channel 5’s “Show Me St. Louis” and “The Wellness Hour,” a national health talk-show. “My chiropractor recommended I talk with Dr. Smith about using a sleep appliance to treat my sleep apnea. I’m so glad I did because now I am sleeping well, I’m no longer tired and my headaches are gone. I feel so much better and I can think more clearly. If you are thinking about getting a sleep appliance, do it! Dentistry With TLC is great. I love that they have great technology, like the take-home sleep study.”

• Sleep in any position • Travel with ease again

“Don’t wait. Get this oral appliance as soon as you can. I used to use a CPAP and I disliked everything about it. Since I’ve been using my appliance I sleep better at night and have more energy during the day. I no longer use my CPAP and don’t have to deal with the noise of my CPAP when I sleep, I don’t wake up during the night and my wife sleeps better too. I’m glad I learned about Dr. Smith on the radio and drove to Godfrey. Everything at Dentistry With TLC has been great.” -Ron B., Bartelso, IL
