Veiled Prophet Organization announces parade plans For The Edge The Veiled Prophet Organization has officially announced that the 134th annual VP Parade will take place in Downtown St. Louis, returning America’s Biggest Birthday Parade to its original location after two years in Forest Park. The Parade will begin at 7th and Market streets at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 2, kicking off a weekend of Independence Day celebrations. Fair St. Louis, set for July 2-4, will remain in Forest Park for 2016 and will feature three days of familyfriendly activities, food, live music, fireworks, and more. “We are deeply grateful to Forest Park for its support in hosting the Parade for the past two years,” said Jim Hetlage, Grand Marshal of the 2016 Parade. “The Parade has historically been a civic point of pride for the City of St. Louis. We are thrilled to return to Downtown and work alongside Fair Saint Louis in Forest Park to host a true, city-wide Fourth of July celebration with these events.” “Big things are happening in Downtown St. Louis, and we are delighted the 2016 VP Parade will return to its traditional location in the heart of Downtown, near the new National Blues Museum and CityArchRiver,” said City of St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay. Hetlage also announced that the theme of this year’s Parade is “Hats Off to Heroes.” “We are excited to present a tribute to Americans from all walks of life whose everyday contributions make them heroes in their communities,” he said. “The Parade will celebrate heroes in every shape and form, from military officers and veterans, to first responders, to blue collar workers, to school teachers, to parents, and all those in between.” more “The Parade is a celebration of our city, our region and our

As always, Parade officials will designate an accessible Special Needs Viewing Area for viewers with disabilities. Public parking information will be announced closer to the event. KMOV will broadcast the Parade live from outside Union Station beginning at 10 a.m. on July 2. The VP organization is also working with its broadcast partners to present America’s Biggest Birthday Parade on television throughout the region. Soulard: A market and marketing For The Edge Digital is the new standard for marketing agencies. Traditional ad and PR agencies are scrambling to either add digital marketing to their offerings, or outsource client work to specialty digital creative agencies. And St. Louis has a growing hub for digital marketing – Soulard. This historic French neighborhood – one the oldest communities in St. Louis -- is attracting the best and the brightest creative talent to its agencies. The fame of Soulard’s farmers’ market and Mardi Gras celebration might soon be equaled by its creative tech focus. Two of the neighborhood’s most notable agencies are SteadyRain on Geyer Avenue and Sundaram on Accomac Street. Housed in a former convent from the 1800s, SteadyRain’s creative, beautiful atmosphere is an eclectic mix of Soulard tradition with high-tech office amenities. The multiple award-winning firm services clients in all aspects of digital marketing – from web strategy, web development to digital marketing campaign management for both SEO and paid

search. It caters to many industries but has particular specialty in manufacturing, banking, education and tourism, among others. Additionally, SteadyRain offers specialty expertise in mobile app development expanding the Internet of Things. This is the networking of physical objects — devices, vehicles, buildings and other items — embedded with electronics, software, sensors and network connectivity that enables remote operation from a mobile device. Demand is so high for SteadyRain's services, they are now hiring substantially more staff to handle the huge workload and will continue to do so for the next several years. They have also expanded their office space in the building to an extra floor, which is being dedicated solely for the digital marketing team’s growth. Digital marketing, specifically, is in such high demand, SteadyRain is starting a seminar series called 2ConnectU free of charge to local marketing decision makers to better educate them on the expanding and evolving digital channels. These classes will educate attendees on the opportunities in digital

marketing channels and, more specifically, new channels and digital strategies as they emerge. The seminars will show marketers how to use their proven instincts to assist their companies in managing these channels without having to know the deep technical aspects involved. SteadyRain holds the 2ConnectU seminars in the building’s chapel. For more information on SteadyRain contact the team at 314446-0733 or at strategy@steadyrain.com/ Sundaram is another creative digital agency in Soulard. The company was founded in 2008 in Austin, which is their main office location. Having an office in Austin, one of the top technology cities in the country, is a great asset for the agency. As St. Louis has continued to grow as a technology hub, this has been a great marriage of locations. Sundaram works mainly with non-profit organizations, startups, professional services organizations and consumer product companies. For more information on Sundaram at 314-281-4458 or mediasharkpr@gmail.com.

People People planner Museum exhibit focuses on terrorism in U.S.

Spies, Traitors and Saboteurs: Fear and Freedom in America, a special exhibition from the International Spy Museum, opened Feb.6 and runs through May 8 at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park. This 6,000 square-foot exhibit provides a historic perspective on acts of terror that have taken place on American soil. Spies, Traitors and Saboteurs reveals nine major events and periods in U.S. history when A m e r i c a n s w e re t h re a t e d b y enemies within its borders. It depicts who the government and public responded, illustrates the corresponding evolution of U.S. counterintelligence and homeland security efforts and examines the challenge of securing the nation without compromising the civil liberties upon which it was founded. • Aug. 24, 1814 – The City of Washington Captured and the While House Burned. During the War of 1812, the city of Washington was captured and the White House, the U.S. Capitol and other major buildings were torched by British troops aided with information provided by a few Americans. • July 30, 1916 – Manhattan Hit by Massive Explosions in New York Harbor. German secret agents, aided by American collaborators, blew up a munitions depot in New York Harbor, showering Manhattan and the Statute of Liberty with shrapnel and debris. Acts of German sabotage on American soil like this contributed to America's entry into World War I and inspired the passage of the 1918 Espionage Act still in effect today and the growth of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. • June 2, 1919 – Anarchist Bombs Target American Leaders. When the home of Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer was bomb by an anarchist and plots for more bombings were revealed, both the public and the government clamored for tighter law enforcement and more restrictive legislation for immigrants, resulting in the roundups, deportations and public outrage associated with the now infamous Palmer Raids. • Aug. 8, 1925 – 30,000 Ku Klux Klan Members Parade Down Pennsylvania Avenue. The nation's oldest hate group, the Ku Klux Klan, has risen three times in the nation's history. Each time, the group changed, evolving from small vigilante circles to huge violent organizations. They began inflicting terror on former slaves after the Civil War and grew into a politically powerful organization of 4 million that expanded its targets to include immigrants, Jews and Catholics in the 1920s. In the 1960s, they began attacking African Americans and civil rights workers. Today, a diminished Klan is only one among many white supremacist groups. • Dec. 7, 1941 – American Helps Japanese Pilot Terrorize Hawaiian I s l a n d A f t e r P e a r l h a r b o r. A Japanese pilot returning from the Pearl Harbor attack crash-landed on the Hawaiian Island of Nihau, and with support of a JapaneseAmerican, took hostages and terrorized the community. The incident, little remembered today, perpetuated fears about Japanese Americans. Fears that ultimately led to the unprecedented incarceration of thousands.

• April, 1945 – The Kremlin Launches One of the First Cold War Attacks Against the U.S. Near the end of World War II, the Kremlin harshly condemned American Communists for softening their commitment to a worldwide communist revolution. The Communist Party of the United States snapped to action, ousting its moderate leader and re-establishing itself as a highly militant and subversive organization, fueling America's fears that American Communists would become Stalin's tool to overthrow the U.S. government. • March 1, 1971 – Radical Group Explodes Bomb in the U.S. Capitol. Protests over the war in Vietnam and civil rights turned violent during the "days of rage" and extremist groups, such as the Weather Underground and Black Liberation Army, took action. • April 19, 1995 – Massive Bomb Destroys Federal Building in Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City bombing, the deadliest act of terrorism on U.S. soil in the 20th century, awakened Americans to threats posed by domestic extremists, especially the virulently anti-government right-wing groups. • Beyond Sept. 11th – Terrorism Today. In the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, initiatives by the U.S. government to root out terrorist elements in the country have irrevocably changed the lives of Americans. Spies, Traitors and Saboteurs supports these stories with historic photographs, themed environments, interactive displays, film, artifacts and video. Exhibit highlights include: • A timeline that traces over 80 acts of terror that have taken place in the U.S. from 1776 to today, including the Revolutionary War plot to kidnap George Washington, the vents of Bloody Kansas prior to the Civil War, John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry, the 1960s church bombings in the South and the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001. • APL Badge and ID Card (1917) – Carried by operatives of the American Protective League who spied on their fellow Americans on behalf of the U.S. Justice

Department during World War I. • Anarchist Globe Bomb (circa 1886) – Presented evidence in the trial of the men tried in connection with Chicago Haymarket riot (replica). • Ritual Klan Red Robe (circa 1965) – Worn by the Klan "Kladd," the elected officer who presided over the secret rituals and ceremonies of the Ku Klux Klan. • K l a n " b u s i n e s s c a rd s " – Ominous warnings to innocent American families that their every move was being watched. • We a t h e r U n d e r g r o u n d Video Presentation – Featuring an exclusive interview with ex-Weather Underground member Bernadine Dohrn, filmed for the exhibition. • Fragments of Planes that hit the World Trade Center – Recovered following the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and used as evidence by the FBI in their ensuing investigation. • Under Siege – A powerful eight-minute film exploring the terrorist threat today, initiatives by the U.S. government to root out terrorists elements in the U.S., the balance between civil liberties and national security, and the impact on the daily lives of Americans. It features a range of interviews with leading thinkers including Daniel Pipes, Director of the Middle East Forum; Akbar S. Ahmed, the Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies and Professor of International Relations at American University in Washington, D.C.,; Steven Emerson, terrorist expert and investigator and Morris Dees, co-founder and Chief Trial Counsel of the Southern Poverty Law Center. • Visitor Polling Station – This unique computer interactive provides visitors the opportunity to express their own opinions on questions raised in the exhibition about how the nation has responded to the historical events presented. The questions were developed in consultation with the Gallup O rg a n i z a t i o n a n d a d d i t i o n a l historical questions can enable visitors to see how Americans responded to similar questions posed by the Gallup Poll at that time in history. QuickGlance Movie Reviews

"Everybody Wants Some!!"

"Everybody Wants Some!!" is Richard Linklater's selfdescribed spiritual sequel to "Dazed and Confused," and, somewhat miraculously, the spirit has remained intact. It's been 13 years from one to the other: long enough to literally watch a boy grow up. But between the '70s highschool graduation of "Dazed" and the first college days of the 1980-set "Everybody Wants Some!!" it feels like hardly a summer has passed. We left off with Foghat's "Slow Ride"; we pick up with the Knack's "My Sharona." The song's thumping bass, which opens the film, is an early signal (if the double exclamation points didn't already give it away) of the exuberance to come in "Everybody Wants Some!!," Linklater's marvelously loose and affectionately antic portrait of college life. It's a chapter that Linklater's "Boyhood" never got to. But it's rendered here with the same attention to the rhythms of youth and the in-between moments the director has long been drawn to. But unlike "Boyhood," it also has bong hits, disco dancing and sex — lots of it. It's a laid back "Animal House," with shots of philosophy mixed in. Jake Bradford (Blake Jenner) is a freshman baseball pitcher who arrives in September 1980 at Southeast Texas University, where he moves in with his future teammates and fraternity brothers. Bros are not the most loved of college types, but Linklater's frat guys, aside from being competitive, womanizing boozehounds, are mostly clever, curious and likable. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language throughout, sexual content, drug use and some nudity." RUNNING TIME: Running time: 151 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Miles Ahead"

"Miles Ahead," an ambitious, experimental biopic about jazz legend Miles Davis, actually states its mission twice over the course of the movie. Basically: "If you're going to tell a story, come with some attitude. Don't make it all corny." The person saying it is Miles Davis, played by Don Cheadle, who also co-wrote and directed. In the context of the film, he's speaking to a fictional music writer named Dave Braden (Ewan McGregor), who has conned, charmed and strong-armed his way into Miles' orbit for a few days in hopes of writing a comeback story that would end the eccentric musician's half decade of dormancy. While a little on the nose to be repeated, it's a good line, and an even better goal in the murky and generally unrewarding territory of the dreaded biopic — especially for someone as elusive, multifaceted and just downright giant as Miles Davis was. As Cheadle's Miles cheekily says to Dave in that whispered rasp, "I was born, I moved to New York, met some cats, made some music, did some dope, made some more music, then you showed up at my house." RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong language throughout, drug use, some sexuality/nudity and brief violence." RUNNING TIME: 100 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Demolition"

What if a young man who just lost his young wife in a car accident experienced none of the stages of grief? What if he felt nothing? What if he, instead, started writing letters to a vending machine company and dismantling

10

every object in sight? Perhaps that's just a person coasting in denial, but, to buy that, you would have to believe that the person also had some sort of humanity in the first place. In the case of Davis Mitchell (Jake Gyllenhaal) in director JeanMarc Vallée's ambitious, flawed and whimsically sinister "Demolition-" let's just say that's not entirely clear. Davis, for much of the movie, is like the Patrick Bateman of widowers. He is incredibly wealthy, cold, unfeeling and vaguely sociopathic. Instead of bodies, though, it's objects he's dissecting. At first, it's actually quite captivating as you drift with Davis in the aftermath of his wife Julia's (Heather Lind) death. He was in the car with her when it got broadsided. He came out without a scratch. She died that night. He can't even muster up any emotion as her grieving father (Chris Cooper) breaks down. And then at the wake, instead of socializing, he goes into a study to compose a letter to the vending machine company whose hospital unit failed to give him the Peanut M&Ms he paid for. It's in this handwritten complaint letter where Davis starts to really dish — about how he only got this job at a $6 billion investment firm because of his father-in-law, about his daily routines in his magazine-ready glass and steel cube of a house, about the time he lied to a fellow passenger on the commuter train about what he did for a living, and about how he never really loved his wife. R AT E D : R b y t h e M o t i o n P i c t u re A s s o c i a t i o n o f America for "language, some sexual references, drug use and disturbing behavior." RUNNING TIME: 100 minutes. T ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"The Boss"

The search continues for a suitable showcase for the awesome talents of Melissa McCarthy outside of films directed by Paul Feig. The latest vehicle to give it a try, "The Boss," has a promising enough blueprint for comedy. McCarthy plays the red-haired, thoroughly turtlenecked Michelle Darnell, a ruthless, selfmade executive whose Martha Stewart-like descent lands her in white-collar prison. Penniless upon release, she moves in with her former and much mistreated assistant Claire (Kristen Bell) and her daughter Rachel (Ella Anderson). But, as in McCarthy's slipshod road movies "Identity Thief" and "Tammy," the material here isn't on her level, the laughs are largely cheap and once again, the hall-of-fame comic actress is stuck in a minor-league movie. Like "Tammy," ''The Boss" was directed by Ben Falcone, McCarthy's husband and longtime collaborator, and written by them both. (Steve Mallory, who also dates back to their improv days at the Upright Citizens Brigade, also pitches in on the screenplay). In both films, the premise is solidly rooted in the common frustrations of thoughtless bosses and dead-end jobs. Tammy's midlife crisis was partially prompted by a meltdown with her fast-food manager (played by Falcone), but in "The Boss," Bell's Claire is the one suffering under tyrants. Michelle is introduced as the 47th wealthiest woman in America, a perch she flaunts as a finance guru. At an arena rally, she descends to the stage on a bird with dollar bills showering her. She's Suze Orman times a hundred. Her downfall is plotted by a business rival, Renault (Peter Dinklage), who gets her locked up for insider trading. Claire, a single mother, finds another job with yet another uncaring supervisor (the underused Cecily Strong). But Michelle turns up on Claire's Chicago doorstep, looking for a place to stay. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sexual content, language and brief drug use." RUNNING TIME: 99 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"The Jungle Book"

You can practically feel the beating heart of the jungle in Jon Favreau's stunning adaptation of "The Jungle Book," which is easily the most visually dazzling movie to hit theaters this year. Like "Avatar" before it, this CG and live action interpretation of Rudyard Kipling's classic tale of the boy raised by wolves feels like a momentous occasion in the technical advancements of big budget cinema. From the thrill of a distant waterfall to the terror of a mudslide or stampeding buffalo, Favreau and his visual effects maestros have created artificial living things that truly look and feel real. Even the animals' ability to communicate in English seems as natural as their breathing and emoting. They have not been sanitized to be cute or less threatening either — even the tender mama wolf Raksha (Lupita Nyong'o). They still look like wild animals and, for the most part, act like wild animals, too. At first, this actually makes their close interactions with the human boy Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi) even more disarming. Eventually your nerves calm and you submit to the magic of this world. The story follows the same beats as Disney's animated feature from 1967, but Favreau and his team made sure to up the intensity a few notches — the hyperrealism of the animals necessitates it. The tension created by the fact that they all have claws and teeth and instinct to contend with is always there. You're already on edge by the time the tiger Shere Khan (Idris Elba, in a truly stunning vocal performance that's both terrifying and relatable) enters the picture. He adamantly believes that humans should not be living among them and is prepared to use whatever intimidation tactics are necessary to rid their world of Mowgli. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some sequences of scary action and peril." RUNNING TIME: 105 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Green Room"

"Play your early stuff," is the advice given to the punk band The Ain't Rights when their dirt-broke, gas-siphoning tour lands a last-minute gig at an Oregon backwoods roadhouse in Jeremy Saulnier's brisk and brutal genre exercise "Green Room." The tip from the spikey-haired 'zine reporter who's set up the show (an excellent David W. Thompson, from "Win Win") isn't because the crowd will be expecting the band's nonexistent "hits," but because he knows the angriest, heaviest tunes will go down best. They'll be playing for skinheads. The band, a grimy group of punks (Anton Yelchin, Alia Shawkat, Joe Cole, and Callum Turner) from Virginia limping across the country, shrug. They've had Neo-Nazis at their shows before. When they drive along a remote dirt road in their beat-up van, they're still not intimidated by the swastikas and Confederate flags around them. They provocatively open with the Dead Kennedys' "Nazi Punks F--- Off." The trouble doesn't come then, but after the show backstage, where the band returns to the green room to find a girl on the ground with a knife in her head. Things go south quickly, and the band is confronted with something far more hardcore than anything in their record collection. The road movie that "Green Room" started out to be veers abruptly into a siege film as the head Neo-Nazi (Patrick Stewart, using his refined cordiality for menace) sends waves of "true believers" into the roadhouse to dispatch the witnesses. "Green Room" is Saulnier's follow-up to his self-financed breakthrough "Blue Ruin," a lean and riveting revenge tale also acted out by a novice in violence (Macon Blair, who pops here, too). RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong brutal graphic violence, gory images, language and some drug content." RUNNING TIME: 95 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

He adamantly believes that humans should not be living among them and is prepared to use whatever intimidation tactics are necessary to rid their world of Mowgli. This sends the young boy on a journey to the human village with the stoic panther Bagheera (Ben Kingsley). Anyone with the vaguest memory of "The Jungle Book" will remember the characters the boy encounters on the way — the snake Kaa (Scarlett Johansson), the bear Baloo (Bill Murray) and the orangutan King Louie (Christopher Walken). Although it is somewhat distracting to have such famous voices overwhelming

every scene, each does a fine job — especially Murray, who brings a much-needed comedic lightness to the story with his affably conniving Baloo in the second act. Sethi is energetic and enthusiastic as Mowgli — an adventurous kid who's as unfazed by a handful of bee stings as he is a gargantuan snake. But for all the attention to detail, there's an unnatural modernity to the dialogue he's given that can be trying at times. For the most part he blends in as well as the sole human among wild CG animals could possibly be expected to. On the subject of things seeming out of place, there are also two songs from the 1967 film that are integrated into the story —"The Bear Necessities" and "I Wanna Be Like You." ("Trust In Me" plays over the credits).

"Sing Street" hits the right notes By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge People that know me also know that I'm the last person that should comment on music. I don't listen to a lot of music, I like even less, and I really don't understand most of it. My tastes run very contrary to my personality and it's simple to say that I just know what I like when I hear it, rhyme or reason be darned. That's why I was so surprised to be charmed right out of my seat by "Sing Street", a Weinstein Company production about some high school kids starting a band in Dublin in '85. This wasn't my generation, this wasn't my music. Why was I so enamored? Truth be told, it doesn't take a golden ear to be entranced by the longing from something from a different time, a throwback to an entire catalogue of

New Wave, synthpop, or whatever else you want to call it. The looks were uniquely '80s whether in Ireland or the States. These kids capture a feeling that is universal. Not necessarily a biopic, "Sing Street" does represent something very contemporary to its time. Conor Lalor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) is the youngest child in a very unhappy family where his mother (Maria Doyle Kennedy) and dad (Aiden Gillen) spend most of the movie yelling at each other and fighting over money (amid a floundering national economy) and infidelity (both imagined and/or real). To escape the constant din of domestic anti-bliss, Conor forms Sing Street with some fellas from school, including his writing partner and only friend (Mark McKenna). But why? Conor's new at his (less costly)

school and doesn't know anyone there. It's a good way for him to find a hobby that doesn't revolve around the schoolyard or the abusive headmaster, Brother Baxter (Don Wycherley). Even better, it gives him a reason to talk to the mysterious girl (Lucy Boynton) on the stoop across the street. Raphina is older and wants to be a model, giving Conor instant incentive to cast her in his offthe-cuff music video. This is where "Sing Street" really got me. I get 'alone in a new place' and I'm always a sucker for 'boy meets girl', but Conor and friends are not just interested in becoming the next cover band of Duran Duran; they want to be megastars in their own right for their own material. Songs like "The Riddle of the Model" and "Drive It Like You Stole It" are catchy and I've enjoyed

listening to them several more times thanks to the benefit of iTunes. Director John Carney uses the same style he brought to past critical triumphs "Once" and "Begin Again" in forming the emotional core of this movie. Sing Street really brings it hard in their videos. I mean this was the original generation for MTV, for crying out loud. The production values are prototypically Irish in their use of thrift and hardship but use the great benefit of Boynton's sex appeal to make it all the better. Truthfully, she's got to be cut from the same magical European cloth as her former co-star Emma Watson, gorgeous and defiant all at once. My favorite music-influenced film is Cameron Crowe's "Almost Famous" and part of the reason I cite this is the close connection to two characters shared between the films.

April 28, 2016

The late Philip Seymour Hoffman plays real-life rock critic Lester Bangs in the former and in "Sing Street" Jack Reynor plays Conor's older brother, Brendan. The two are catalysts for their protégés, spurring them on to greater heights and more meaningful results. Brendan is a slacker that has burned every bridge and every opportunity ever thrown his way. He'll stop nowhere short of a miracle to push Conor to follow his dream. For a movie that has no shortage of meaningful relationships, this is the one that'll stick with you the longest. "Sing Street" runs 106 minutes and is rated PG-13 for thematic elements including strong language and some bullying behavior, a suggestive image, drug material, and teen smoking. I give this film three and a half stars out of four.

As a founding member of Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt, songwriter Jay Farrar helped popularize the alt-country movement of the 1990s. He also launched a solo career during the following decade, making it plain that his musical ambitions stretched far beyond the retro-leaning twang of his contemporaries. July 13: Ptah Williams. Williams is one of St. Louis' finest jazz pianists. One of his many strengths is that he

is able to shine both as a soloist and as an accompanist. As a soloist, he assumes center stage with grace and confidence and as an accompanist he supports the soloist with a style that is varied and innovative, yet never overpowering. July 20: Erin Bode. The Erin Bode Group creates music forged from the Americana of its members' midwestern roots, infused with jazz grooves and made magic by Bode's bell-like voice. Sophisticated arrangements and attention to phrasing, both vocal and instrumental, further distinguish the band's fresh sound. July 27: The Cree Rider Family Band. The Cree Rider Family Band is rooted in a country music sound, with elements of folk, Americana

and rock and roll. Known for their energetic and engaging live shows, the Cree Rider Family Band has been called a subversive country band that wears its heart on its sleeve. Cree Rider Family Band has had songs featured on television shows and independent films. August 3: Joe Mancuso. Mancuso is a classically trained vocalist turned jazz singer. He studied classical voice, audio production a n d j a z z s t u d i e s a t We b s t e r University. He sings with an abundance of passion and intensity, whether singing a ballad, bossa nova, blues or swing tune and takes his audience on a dynamic, emotional ride every time. Boston to appear in St. Charles

Tom Scholz’s band Boston became

Sheldon to welcome Joe Pug

Austin, TX singer songwriter Joe Pug’s rise has been as improbable as it has been impressive. After dropping out of college and taking on work as a carpenter in Chicago, he got his musical start by providing CDs for his fans to pass along to

their friends. This led to a string of sold out shows and a record deal with Nashville indie Lightning Rod Records (Jason Isbell, Billy Joe Shaver). As he toured behind Messenger (2010) and The Great Despiser (2012) it was with a band that looked as much like a jazz trio as an Americana band. The following years would have them on the road for over four hundred shows, including stops at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and The Newport Folk Festival. His latest, critically acclaimed album, Windfall, released in 2015, was praised by Rolling Stone with,"...it showcases the singer's unique and achingly honest point of view that spins lyrics into folk poetry." Joe Pug with special guest is scheduled April 27, 2016 at 8 p.m. at the Sheldon Concert Hall. Tickets are $22 reserved seating. Call MetroTix at 314-534-1111 or visit TheSheldon.org.

Scorpions to perform at The Fox

Hot off the heels of their latest studio album, “Return To Forever,â€? the Scorpions celebrate their 50th Anniversary and make a stop at the Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis, MO on May 10, 2016 with QueensrĂżche. Tickets are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. 50 years after a very young Rudolf Schenker founded the band in the profoundly provincial, postwar Hannover, the Scorpions remain a band that is able to attract masses of new fans at any given time. The Scorpions are once again at the peak of their creativity with their latest album. Tracks like the first single “We Built This Houseâ€? are as contemporary as the sweeping “House Of Cardsâ€? (a guaranteed live hit). Also belonging in the category live hit is “Eye Of The Stormâ€?, a track, that transports a notion of the unbelievable dynamic and joy of playing, characterizing the Scorpions’ stage performances. The Scorpions are currently on their 50th Anniversary World Tour, which the band is loving. Not least, “because it’s simply unbelievable and inspiring to look into the faces of very young fans, who discover us and our music in a whole new way.â€? And who, this might be added, experience the magic that characterizes Scorpions concerts since their early days, for the first time. QueensrĂżche first burst onto the music scene in 1982 with the release of their self-titled 4 song EP "QueensrĂżche". They very quickly gained international recognition and performed to sold out audiences around the world. With the follow up first full length album "The Warning" in 1984, and the ground breaking 1986 release of "Rage For Order",

an iconic classic rock fixture when they joined the music scene with their self-titled album in 1976. With over 17 million copies sold, Boston generated hits such as "More Than a Feeling," "Peace of Mind," and "Smokin'," rock staples that are still in heavy rotation today. Their second album, Don't Look Back was another chart-topper that confirmed their place in rock history, followed by Third Stage, which hit #1 on the charts, with the top single of 1986, "Amanda." With over 31 million albums sold to date, Boston has stood the test of time, as evidenced by live audiences that span generations. Boston will appear with Blue Oyster Cult on June 3 at the Family Arena in St. Charles. Tickets can be purchased at the Family Arena Ticket Office or online at www.metrotix.com. Fans can expect to hear all the classic songs they have grown to love, and will be treated to some new additions to their set list based on recent requests. Guests will be treated to wild Hammond organ work, soaring harmony guitars, and exceptional vocal arrangements, as well as Boston’s unique visual stage presentation and plenty of extraterrestrial sounds heard nowhere else on Earth. For over four decades, Blue Öyster Cult has been thrilling fans of intelligent hard rock worldwide with powerful albums loaded with classic songs. Indeed, the Long Island, NY-based band is revered within the hard rock and heavy metal scene for its pioneering work. Blue Öyster Cult occupies a unique place in rock history because it's one of very few hard rock/heavy metal bands to earn both genuine mainstream critical acclaim as well as commercial success.

Religion Religion briefs Franklin Graham: Christians should deepen political work

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Evangelist Franklin Graham h a s b ro u g h t h i s s t a t e c a p i t o l p r a y e r r a l l y t o u r t o Mississippi, where lawmakers passed a bill that would let churches and some private businesses deny services to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. Graham said Wednesday that he wasn't in Jackson to endorse or oppose any particular legislation, but made it clear to reporters after the 40-minute rally that he supports legislation to allow Christians to live out their faith, and in his view that includes disapproval of samesex marriages. The son of Billy Graham is telling people who attend the rallies that Christians need to get more involved in politics and bring biblical principles to public office. He says Christians must push back against secularism, which he describes as the "enemy."

26 states urge appeals court to uphold Md. cross ruling

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — More than half of the states have filed a legal brief supporting the constitutionality of a Maryland war memorial in the shape of a cross. The monument honoring 49 men who died in World War One stands in a state-owned highway median in Bladensburg, Maryland, just outside Washington. An

atheist group claimed in a 2014 lawsuit that the so-called " B l a d e n s b u rg C ro s s " a m o u n t s t o u n c o n s t i t u t i o n a l government sponsorship of religion. A federal judge disagreed, but the American Humanist Association appealed his ruling. In their friend-of-the-court brief, 26 states say if the appeals court upholds the judge's ruling it would set an important precedent protecting other memorials, including those at Arlington National Cemetery. A hearing date has not been set.

Sanders defends decision to speak at Vatican amid NY contest

NEW YORK (AP) — Bernie Sanders says he would re g re t re f u s i n g a n i n v i t a t i o n t o a t t e n d a Va t i c a n conference this week, even though it takes place just days before the critical New York presidential primary. Sanders has a 10-minute speaking slot Friday at the conference organized by the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, which serves a role at the Holy See similar to a think-tank. Dozens of speakers will commemorate the 25th anniversary of "Centesimus Annus," a teaching document by Pope John Paul II on the economy and social justice. Sanders says he wouldn't be leaving the campaign trail if it wasn't what he called "an opportunity that comes once in a lifetime." The chancellor for the pontifical academy, Bishop

NEW BETHEL UNITED METHODIST

Mid-Week - Every Wednesday(Summer break until Sept. 9) -

VATICAN CITY (AP) — When Pope Francis and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, the spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians, visit migrants on the Greek island of Lesbos this weekend, they'll be doing more than sending a political message about the need to welcome refugees. Christianity's two most important leaders, still officially divided by a thousand-year schism, will be speaking with an increasingly unified voice that has gone beyond the realm of religion to confronting pressing issues such as climate change and humanitarian crises around the globe. The visit, which comes on the heels of Francis' historic meeting with the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, is evidence of an increasingly important Catholic-Orthodox partnership that has been strengthened by shared concern for Christians being exterminated by Islamic extremists in the lands of Jesus' birth. Francis has called these indiscriminate attacks on Christians — Catholic, Orthodox and others — an "ecumenism of blood."

Exhibit to focus on folk art

The Saint Louis Art Museum will host an exhibit titled Self-Taught Genius from June 19 through Sept. 11, in the Main Exhibition Galleries, East Building Self-Taught Genius explores the continuum of American folk art through the concept of a “self-taught genius, an enduring term that has changed dramatically over time. Framed within context of seven perspectives from which people are compelled to create, this exhibition highlights more than 100 remarkable works by self-taught artists. These modern and contemporary artistic visionaries expressed distinct and unorthodox creativity, and were active participants in shaping American visual culture. As selftaught geniuses they influenced generations of artists and established lively artistic traditions, from post-Revolutionary times to today. Organized by the American Folk Art Museum, Self-Taught Genius was brought to the Saint Louis Art Museum by M. Melissa Wolfe, curator of American art. The exhibition will travel to the Tampa Museum of Art after its presentation in St. Louis. For more information, visit www. slam.org.

Museum to exhibit Chinese art

explores how real and imagined landscapes in Chinese art are seen within paintings as well as threedimensional objects. Works in the exhibition include two hanging scrolls bearing titles that refer to actual named places: The Taibo Wine Pavilion at Caishi Rock by Miao Song and Elegant Gathering at the Poetry Niche, a collaborative work by Fa Shishan and his friends. Gathering of the Immortals by Wang Wending depicts the birthday celebration of the Daoist deity Queen Mother of the West in a garden of lotus, plantain, and exotic flowering plants. These screens present symbols of longevity, and were painted in honor of the 60th birthday of the Li family matriarch Madame Chen. Other works in the exhibition that interpret landscapes through visual imagination include the hanging scroll by Wan Shanglin with scenery that arouses a sense of tranquility, and two porcelain barrel-form garden seats decorated with peacocks in landscape settings. Real and Imagined Landscapes in Chinese Art is curated by Philip Hu, associate curator-in-charge of Asian art. The exhibit is free.

Oriental carpet display planned

The Saint Louis Art Museum is hosting a new exhibit, The Carpet and the Connoisseur. During the early 20th century, St. Louis businessman James F. Ballard became one of the country’s top collectors of Oriental carpets. An unlikely collector, he was celebrated for his approach to collecting Anatolian carpets from provincial centers in Turkey at a time when most other rug connoisseurs were acquiring the classical Persian and Indian carpets. In addition to his passion for collecting, Ballard was also a patient teacher, inveterate traveler, and, above all, the first Oriental carpet enthusiast to acknowledge the importance of Turkish influence on the history of the pile carpet. Ballard ultimately divided his collection of car pets between The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1922 and the Saint Louis Art Museum in 1929. Another group of carpets were added to the St.

Dining Delights

Bill Roseberry/The Edge

The sensational Asian pork wrap, above, at The Wooden Nickel Pub and Grill in Glen Carbon. Below, the guacamole bites and jalapeno ranch dipping sauce.

The Wooden Nickel in Glen Carbon By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge Right along historic Main St. in Glen Carbon you'll find a local hot spot where you can relax with friends for a few drinks, or grab a savory dinner — The Wooden Nickel Pub and Grill. The Wooden Nickel is located at 171 S. Main St. in Glen Carbon and you're sure to find plenty of locals ponying up at the bar, or chilling on the patio eating some high quality bar grub served with a friendly smile. I recently visited with my cousin Brandon and a group from our fantasy football league and we weren't disappointed. The Wooden Nickel has an old school feel to it and a great atmosphere, with oak floors and plenty of tables inside to enjoy a quiet dinner or watch a game with your buddies. Like I mentioned before, on nice days you can grab a seat on their patio out back and enjoy the weather. There is also an enclosed patio on the front of the building with bigger tables, so there is a good amount of seating. The only complaint about the amenities is the size of the bathrooms. They are really small for the amount of business at the Wooden Nickel. With a private party taking up the enclosed patio on our visit, we grabbed a table inside and started perusing the menu to see what Wooden Nickel was really all about. Everybody started ordering appetizers to kick off the day. There were orders for fried pickles and toasted ravioli submitted, but I went

24

with a little more quirky pick with the guacamole bites. Guacamole bites aren't common fare on most menus, so I got a little giddy when I saw them available. They are simple but delicious. It's just guacamole encapsulated in a fried shell. At Wooden Nickel they are served with a jalapeno ranch dressing. These weren't the best guacamole bites I've ever eaten, but they were still very good. You got the great

On the Edge of the Weekend

creamy blast from the guacamole in each bite and the dipping sauce packed a major wallop. I warn those who are leery of spiciness, because the sauce gives a pretty good kick. Now it was on to the main course and this was where it was at. I went with the Asian pork wrap, a definite highlight of the Wooden Nickel menu. It is comprised of pulled pork glazed with a sweet chili sauce, topped with Asian slaw and crunchy Asian noodles and

April 28, 2016

wrapped in a whole grain tortilla. The tortilla is stuffed with fresh and delicious ingredients and the sweet chili sauce is amazing. The sweetness of the sauce will have you licking your lips after every bite and its a perfect combo for the saltiness of the pork and crunchy noodles. It's just a high-quality sandwich for what could be considered classic pub food. The rest of my group didn't have any complaints about their meals

either. I'd say my buddy Luke liked the fried pickles, he inhaled them pretty quickly. There is plenty more to chose from on the menu, too. Looking at the appetizer menu, there's the lobster rangoon, served with that same delectable sweet chili sauce. I've tried them on previous visits and they are very good. There are also deep fried green beans available and the Nickel nachos among others. The Nickel nachos include sh redded chicken covered in Wooden Nickel's secret sauce, served over chips with jalapenos, tomatoes, black olives and shredded cheese with salsa and sour cream on the side. There are also salad options, sandwiches, including a burger, a frisco melt, a barbecue pulled pork sandwich and a Cuban sandwich to name a few. Check out the chicken wings, jumbo naked wings spun in Wooden Nickel's special wing sauce. Wooden Nickel has a decent beer menu also, offering some good craft beers. I enjoyed a Best Damn Cherry hard soda and a Urban Chestnut STL IPA on my visit. The Best Damn Cherry tastes just like a cherry coke, pretty refreshing stuff. A s f o r p r i c e , i t ' s f a i r. T h e guacamole bites cost $7.49 and the Asian pork wrap was $6.99. Most of the menu offers options for under $10. So next time your tooling through Glen Carbon and looking for a place to hang your hat for awhile, check out Wooden Nickel, it's a place to visit when you gotta eat.
