Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum marks 10th anniversary For The Edge

T

he Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum set a new attendance record April 19 when it celebrated its 10th anniversary by offering free admission and introducing a new way for visitors to explore the story of America’s greatest president. Guests came from as far away as South Korea and Lebanon for the day of music, education and fun. At the end of the day, 5,251 people had visited, shattering the record of 4,740 that was set the day the museum first opened its doors. Admission was free that day, too. The presidential library has created a “MyLincoln” website featuring additional Lincoln documents and photographs to supplement the museum’s exhibits. Guests who want more detail about something they see at the museum can simply pull out a smartphone or tablet. “MyLincoln” also features quizzes and information on what Lincoln was doing on any given day – a guest’s birthday, for instance. “The launch of MyLincoln is just one of the many ways we’re celebrating our tenth anniversary. With ten extraordinary years under our belt, we look forward to the next decade—decades—of bringing Abraham Lincoln’s remarkable legacy to the world,” said Carla Knorowski, CEO of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation, the library and museum’s fundraising arm. “We are grateful to AT&T and all our generous contributors for

their support, not just now and in the past, but in the years to come. Anyone anywhere can learn from www.mylincoln. org, which is supported by AT&T, but it is designed to enhance the experience of museum guests. The museum’s gripping exhibits draw people into Lincoln’s story, and “My Lincoln” offers them a way to ask questions and get answers immediately. “AT&T is a founding donor and member of the Presidential level of donors of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation, which benefits the Museum and Library. We congratulate you on celebrating ten years of sharing Lincoln’s legacy with the world,” said Chris Warwick, Director of External Affairs, AT&T Illinois. “Through your interactive resources, you are mobilizing and enhancing the visitor experience. We look forward to continuing our support.” The museum also recognized the winners of a student art contest that drew more than 1,200 entries. The Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation is donating $200 to the art departments of the schools that produced the winning students in three age groups. The winners are: Brooke Spencer of Galesburg in the K-5 group; Reese Sainburg of Seneca for grades 6-8; Jack Rothmund of Naperville for grades 9-12. Rothmund requested that his $200 be sent to a Chicago school whose art department could use the money. Their work and the entries from the runners-up can be seen at http://bit.ly/LincolnArtContest. Their work also is on display in the museum.

The museum opened its doors on April 19, 2005, completing the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, a state-of-the-art institution dedicated to helping everyone from children to scholars appreciate Lincoln in new ways. It holds an unparalleled collection of original Lincoln materials – more than 52,000 items in all, including an original copy of the Gettysburg Address, a signed copy of the constitutional amendment ending slavery and Lincoln’s stovepipe hat. The library part of the complex contains 12 million items pertaining to all aspects of Illinois history and is one of the nation’s top places for genealogy and history research. Attendance has surpassed all expectations. Experts predicted 2.4 million visitors during the first 10 years, and the actual total has been 3.7 million. Admission was free that first day. To thank the museum’s many supporters and welcome new ones, admission was also free Sunday. Visitors got to enjoy three special exhibits – one about Lincoln’s greatest speeches, another focused on his assassination and funeral, and a third looking back the museum’s creation. The day also included a concert of Civil War-era music, appearances by historic interpreters portraying people from Lincoln’s time and a book-signing with contributors to “Gettysburg Replies: The World Responds to Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.” For information about anniversary festivities for the rest of the year, visit www.TenYearsLincoln.com.

People People planner “The Munsters” are coming to Greenville Car Show

It may look like Halloween in June as two of the stars of the classic television show “The Munsters” will be the celebrity guests at this year’s Greenville (Illinois) Graffiti Car Show. Butch Patrick (Eddie Munster) and Pat Priest (Marilyn Munster) will meet fans and sign autographs on Saturday, June 20 during the show. Replicas of the Munster Koach and Dragula, prominently featured on the program, will also be making an appearance. Patrick was a popular child star who also made guest appearances on many shows of the 1960s including “Bonanza”, “Gunsmoke” and “Rawhide”. Patrick’s work as Eddie, the son of Herman and Lily Munster, made him a TV icon. In the early 1970s Patrick was the star of “Lidsville”, a quirky Saturday morning show produced by Sid and Marty Krofft. Priest took over the role of Marilyn Munster in the show’s 16th episode. Perhaps her best known role outside of “The Munsters” came in 1967 when she co-starred with Elvis Presley in the movie “Easy Come, Easy Go”. She was also a guest on other iconic programs like “Perry Mason”, “Bewitched” and “Mission Impossible”. Car show organizers are excited to have the Munster Koach and Drag-ula on display that day. The original vehicles were the creation of George Barris, a legendary designer and maker of cars used in television shows and movies. The Munster Koach, Herman Munster’s preferred method of transportation, was created from three Model T bodies. The Drag-ula, built by Grandpa Munster and used by Herman in a classic episode of the show, was made using a real fiberglass coffin. This is a rare opportunity to see television history in person. The Greenville Graffiti Car Show on Saturday, June 20 is open to 1990 and older cars and trucks for judging. Vehicles may also be brought for display. For the first time, motorcycles may be brought for display only. Last year’s event attracted nearly 190 cars and trucks to downtown Greenville, Illinois.

Symphony, Nine Network team up

In a unique partnership, the Nine Network of Public Media and the St. Louis Symphony have combined resources to produce a new, monthly television series, Night at the Symphony. It will be broadcast on Nine PBS on the first Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. beginning January 5, 2015, and rebroadcast the following Sunday at 3:00 p.m. beginning January 11. Nine episodes will air in 2015. The hour-long programs will highlight specially selected St. Louis Symphony performances from the 2014–2015 season, as well as encore presentations of concert specials produced since 2012. “This is the only partnership of its kind in the nation between a public television station and a s y m p h o n y o rc h e s t r a , ” s a i d Patrick Murphy, vice president of production for the Nine Network. “The opportunity to bring the experience of one of the world’s finest orchestras into every home in our region shows what is possible

when cultural institutions work together for the benefit of the community.” “When we first started our partnership five years ago, I never would have expected it to evolve into what it’s become,” said Adam Crane, vice president for external affairs at the St. Louis Symphony. “We’ve learned so much along the way, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our musicians and staff, as well as the Nine Network team. The orchestra's mission is to enrich people’s lives through the power of music, and Night at the Symphony embodies this." “In a season full of special anniversaries for the St. Louis Symphony, the genesis of Night

at the Symphony is a terrific way to celebrate,” said Music Director David Robertson. “It’s another way that audiences can enjoy our worldclass orchestra and we’re grateful to the Nine Network for the new opportunity to continue to share our music with the community.” “Our partnership with the St. Louis Symphony is a shining example of what can be achieved through creative collaboration and commitment to a common objective,” said Nine Network President and CEO Jack Galmiche. “It is particularly exciting for us to add this unprecedented series to our extensive local and national arts programming.” The programming lineup for Night at the Symphony through

2015 is as follows (the series will not air in March, June and December): May 4 David Robertson conducts pieces by Brahms, Rosas, Ravel, Alfven, Borodin, Bartók and Ginastera with featured violinists Eva Kozma and Silvian Iticovici. July 6 Conductor David Robertson leads the symphony and cellist Alvin McCall in the performance of works by Copland, Ives and MacDowell. The year wraps up with encore

performances of concerts previously presented on Nine PBS: August 4, September 7, October 5, and November 3. For more information about Night at the Symphony, visit the web page nineNet.org/Symphony. About the Nine Network of Public Media The Nine Network of Public Media is a multifaceted organization creating a network of individuals and organizations empowered by public media to strengthen civic life.

The Dixie Swim Club focuses on four of those weekends and spans a period of thirty-three years. As their lives unfold and the years pass, these women increasingly rely on one another, through advice and raucous repartee, to get through the challenges (men, sex, marriage, parenting, divorce, aging) that life flings at them. And when fate throws a wrench into one of their lives in the second act, these friends, proving the enduring power of

“teamwork,” rally ‘round their own with the strength and love that takes this comedy in a poignant and surprising direction. The Dixie Swim Club is the story of these five unforgettable women—a hilarious and touching comedy about friendships that last forever…

Religion Religion briefs Obamas host White House celebration of gospel music

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama have welcomed top recording artists to the White House for a celebration of gospel music. Aretha Franklin, Lyle Lovett, Shirley Caesar, Emmylou H a r r i s a n d D a r l e n e L o v e w e re a m o n g t h e a r t i s t s participating in Tuesday night's concert, which the president said would "bring some church to the White House." Obama said gospel music was born out of slavery and became the music of the black church. He said it "has an unmatched power to strike the deepest chord in all of us, touching people of all faiths and no faith." The event was the latest in the "In Performance at the White House" series that is broadcast by PBS television stations nationwide. It will be broadcast nationwide by PBS on June 26.

Tennessee House bogs down over making Bible official book

N A S H V I L L E , Te n n . ( A P ) — A s m a l l - t o w n Republican's proposal to make the Bible the official book of Tennessee is being opposed by leaders of his own party, including Gov. Bill Haslam, with the House delaying a scheduled vote on the measure. A sometimes raucous floor debate Tuesday followed a legal opinion by state Attorney General Herbert Slatery saying the bill would violate separation of church and state provisions in the state and federal constitutions. T h e l e g i s l a t i o n ' s s p o n s o r, f r e s h m a n R e p . J e r r y Sexton, disputed Slatery's opinion. Sexton insisted that his bill would memorialize the Bible's role in Tennessee's history and would not establish any religion. The House is expected to take up the measure again when it meets in its next floor session on Wednesday.

UN chief to open Vatican climate change conference

NEW YO R K ( AP) — U.N. Secretar y- G en er al Ban Ki-moon will open a key Vatican meeting this month on Pope Francis' highly anticipated teaching document on climate change. The U.N. chief will join American economist Jeffrey Sachs and the pope's top representative on the environment, Cardinal Peter Turkson, at the April 28 event. Turkson helped write the first draft of the pope's upcoming encyclical on global warming and the environment. Organizers say this month's "Protect the Earth, Dignify Humanity" event will highlight the moral dimensions of environmental protection ahead of the encyclical's release this summer. Organizers say they aim to build a global religious movement to battle climate change. The conference was announced on the websites for the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences and the Vatican's "End Slavery" initiative.

Travel For The Edge Impounded in the 1930s, Central Missouri's Lake of the Ozarks has been a favorite family vacation destination for decades. While the area has grown rapidly and includes many new attractions, accommodations and dining options, the Lake still offers glimpses of its authentic beginnings. The historic Bagnell Dam Strip, adjacent to Bagnell Dam, is the original tourist area where all the Lake fun began. The result of its longevity is a kitschy, retro vibe that still exists today. One of the original, oversized "Muer Men," a towering fiberglass icon of the 1960s, welcomes vacationers as they travel across the Bagnell Dam and enter the "Dogpatch Complex." This string of shops includes the Leather Man store, which specializes in customized leather goods and apparel; Grandma's Candy Kitchen, home to rich, homemade chocolates and 20 flavors of its award-winning fudge; a traditional arcade featuring Skee Ball as well as some of the most popular video games of a bygone era, where parents can introduce their kids to Pac-Man and Mario Brothers, and there's the iconic Dogpatch store. Dogpatch, which opened in 1947 and is based on Al Capp's comic strip of the same name, is the longest continually operated store at the Lake. Generations of visitors return to bring their children and grandchildren to hear the welcoming "howdy" from the hillbilly mannequin seated in the store's rocking chair. Dogpatch features an assortment of souvenirs and gifts, including corncob pipes, in keeping with the Dogpatch theme. The Old Time Photos studio, located across the street from the Dogpatch Complex, offers the chance to don vintage costumes and pose as cowboys and dance hall girls, straight out of classic western movies. Bagnell Dam Strip offers several dining options, including down-home diner food at Stewart's Restaurant. Locals and tourists have been enjoying their catcher's mitt-sized cinnamon rolls and huge pork tenderloins

smothered in gravy since 1953. For more information about the historic Bagnell Dam Strip, visit www. LakeOzarkBagnellDam.com. Vintage cars and motorcycles look right at home along The Strip at annual events such as the Magic Dragon Street Meet, Hot Summer Nights and Bikefest. The 27th annual Magic Dragon Street Meet, May 1-3, will bring in over 1,000 classic cars and 10,000 spectators from across the country for an event that has been likened to walking onto the set of "American Graffiti." For complete details on Magic Dragon, please visit www.MagicDragonCarShow. com. During the summer, Hot Summer Nights, held the second Friday of each month from May through September, is another fantastic vintage auto show that f e a t u re s f re e l i v e m u s i c a n d entertainment along with plenty of hot cars, trucks and bikes. Find more information at www. C ru i s e H o t S u m m e r N i g h t s . c o m . In mid-September, Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest draws motorcycle

enthusiasts from around the country to the Lake for four days of scenic rides, vendor villages, concerts, contests, a bike giveaway and other activities, including the chance to show off their bikes along The Strip. Information about Bikefest can be found at www.LakeBikefest.com. For an overview of the Lake's origins and current information on things to do in the area, visitors can choose to make their first stop at historic Willmore Lodge, which now serves as a museum of Bagnell Dam history as well as the offices of the Lake of the Ozarks Area Chamber of Commerce. Willmore Lodge was built of white pine logs and completed in 1930 to serve as an administrative building, resort and entertainment facility for Union Electric employees during the construction of Bagnell Dam. Willmore Lodge guides visitors through the Lake of the Ozarks' past, and provides them with a stunning panoramic view of the Lake. Learn more about Willmore Lodge at www.WillmoreLodge.com. While the landscape has changed

over the years as the area has developed, one aspect that has remained constant is the natural beauty of the Lake of the Ozarks. Rolling hills and bluffs are a forested backdrop for the 54,000 acres of sparkling blue water. The area is home to two of Missouri's most popular state parks. Lake of the Ozarks State Park is the state's largest and includes activities for every member of the family. Boat rental, public ramps and a self-guided aquatic trail are perfect for vacation activities on the water. On land, 12 trails, ranging from 0.8 of a mile to 13.5 miles, wind through the park for hikers and mountain bikers. Ozark Caverns, located inside the park, offers lantern tours of the Lake area's underground beauty. USA Today's readers very recently named Ha Ha Tonka State Park the fourth best state park in the country. The ruins of a 1900s-era "castle" stand out amid the scenery of this magnificent park located near Camdenton. The stone structure that sits atop a bluff overlooking the Niangua arm of the Lake is all that remains of the dream of Robert McClure Snyder, a wealthy Kansas City businessman, who began construction on his elaborate country estate in 1905. Snyder never saw his dream materialize as he was killed in an auto accident the following year, but the home was finally completed by his sons in the late 1920s and served as Robert Snyder, Jr.'s residence for several years. It was later operated as a hotel until it was destroyed by fire in 1942. The skeleton of Snyder's dream home is now the centerpiece of the park. Ha Ha Tonka offers 14 walking trails covering more than 15 scenic miles throughout the park. The trails allow visitors to see the topography of the area, complete with sinkholes, natural bridges and springs. For more information on both parks, visit www.FunLake. com/State-Parks . As the Lake area built its reputation as a family vacation destination, hundreds of small motels and family-owned resorts dotted the area to p ro v i d e a c c o m m o d a t i o n s f o r travelers. Over the years, the Lake's lodging landscape has changed to feature all types of comfortable accommodations, from campgrounds and rustic cabins and bed and breakfasts to luxury resorts and condominiums, yet those remaining small family-owned resorts continue to be a mainstay for travelers wanting that authentic Lake of the Ozarks experience. For more information about accommodations, activities, events and dining at the Lake of the Ozarks, call the Lake of the Ozarks Convention and Visitor Bureau (CVB) at 1-800-FUN-LAKE, or visit the CVB's award-winning website, www.FunLake.com.

Travel Hitting the trails in Brown County For The Edge M o u n t a i n b i k i n g i n B ro w n County is still one of the best kept secrets of United States mountain bike trails! With miles and miles of flowing trails, scenic vistas, and amazing terrain Brown County has become a world-class mountain biking destination. Who knew that mountain biking could be this fun... in Indiana no less! In 2009, Bike Magazine names Brown County Trails among the "Top 33 Best Rides in America!" In 2011, the trails at Brown County State Park were named an IMBA Epic Trail System. The Brown County State Park, Indiana's largest state park, has a trail system of over 25 miles that has been designed from scratch "by mountain bikers for mountain bikers"... creating that perfect c o m b i n a t i o n o f e x e rc i s e a n d enjoyment. There is also over 150 miles of trails within a half-hour of Brown County & Nashville! Other places to ride include eXplore Brown County with 3 Downhill Courses designed for speed and a North Shore Course where riders can test their skills on a wooden path that narrows to a 2 inch wide challenge. Gnaw Bone Camp also offers private trail systems. Nebo Ridge Trail and Hickory Ridge Trail, both located in Hoosier National Forest, are other popular rides where riders get to travel through some serious back country. BrownCountyMountainBiking. com suggests parking at the North Gate Entrance and heading back by riding the North Gate Trail. Beginner Trails: Limekiln Trail (~2.2 miles) is a beginner trail and is often described as a roller coaster. Pine Loop (~1.6 miles) offers moderate terrain and ups and downs. Great for kids and beginners. Intersects with the North Gate trail. North Gate Trail (~1.1 miles) connects with the North Tower Loop. It has some berms, small rock gardens, stream crossing, light turns and some whoop-de-doos at the

end. (This trail is more challenging than Pine Loop but still classified as beginner). Intermediate Trails: Aynes Loop (~3.4 miles) and North Tower Loop (~3.9 miles) are great for long rides with lengthy climbs and descents – a true Brown County experience. Green Valley Trail (~5.0 miles) winds through scenic, rolling, green hillsides. A newer trail, one of the most remote trails in the park. Advanced Trails:

Schooner Trace (~4.1 miles) is a double-black diamond trail with hills, rocks, trees, roots, tight switchbacks and steep climbs. Combine this trail with Walnut Trail (~2.1 miles) for a challenge. QuickGlance Movie Reviews

"Furious 7"

Fast-moving fight scenes, outrageous auto antics and a sprinkling of ridiculous one-liners make "Furious 7" a campy, crowd-pleasing escape. Never mind that the film repeatedly presents the impossible — a muscle car attacks an airborne helicopter — fans of the franchise know to suspend disbelief at the door. With nonstop action from start to finish, it's easy — if a bit exhausting — to go along for the high-speed ride. Reality intrudes at the end: The film is dedicated to Paul Walker, who died in a car crash in 2013, and concludes with a montage of images of the actor from his five previous "Fast and Furious" appearances. Walker's brothers acted as standins and special effects were used to maintain his presence throughout his final film, which was still in production when he died. There are a couple of creepy allusions to his death in the film that could briefly jar viewers. At one point, Roman (Tyrese Gibson) asks Brian (Walker) to promise their team won't face any more funerals. When Brian replies, "Just one more," he's referring to that of the film's villain (Jason Statham), but one can't help but think of the actor's own accidental death. Another scene shows Brian telling wife Mia (Jordana Brewster) that if she doesn't hear from him after the crew's latest mission, she should "move on." It almost feels like a message to his co-stars. Like its predecessors, the seventh installment of the hit franchise features a multicultural cast, international settings and a dazzling array of cars. While this critic is partial to American muscle cars, the $3.5 million Lykan Hypersport from Dubai-based W Motors is incredible to see. Only seven such vehicles exist. (No Lykan Hypersports were harmed during the making of the film.) RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "prolonged frenetic sequences of violence, action and mayhem, suggestive content and brief strong language." RUNNING TIME: 140 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Woman in Gold"

"Woman in Gold" has a rich story to tell. The true account of Maria Altmann's fight to reclaim a famed Gustav Klimt painting of her aunt, "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I," first stolen by the Nazis and then appropriated by Austria after the war, is laced with riveting history, deep and complex emotion, and fascinating bureaucracy. Yet director Simon Curtis's rendering of Altmann's tale, though respectful and pretty, is somehow lifeless. There is almost too much here for a single movie. Curtis, who charmed with his Marilyn Monroe slice of life "My Week with Marilyn," relies on a combination of flashbacks of Maria's pre-war life in Vienna and the present day tick-tock of her legal quest to take ownership of the painting. Played in the present by Helen Mirren, Maria is a prickly woman with a thick Austrian accent. She owns a boutique in a fancy part of Los Angeles and, following the death of her sister, has made up her mind that she would like to claim what is hers. The man she convinces to help her is Randy Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds), a dull corporate lawyer with a prestigious pedigree and a few poor career choices on his resume. It's been over 60 years since Maria fled Austria during World War II and she is sickened by the thought of returning, refusing to even speak the language when they arrive abroad to plead their case. In Vienna, they're helped by a young native journalist (Daniel Brühl) who functions mostly as a human exposition vehicle. With two actors as charming as Mirren and Reynolds anchoring the story, it's a bit disarming that their charisma

14

never really manages to energize the sluggish tale. Part of that is for effect — they're supposed to grow to love and admire one another while he learns to respect her history — but the eventual payoff doesn't connect. These characters aren't equipped to deliver the lively generational comedy that this story so desperately needs. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some thematic elements and brief strong language." RUNNING TIME: 110 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

"True Story"

Michael Finkel's journalism career, torpedoed by a partly fabricated story, had just bottomed out when a phone call came asking why a man accused of murdering his wife and three children in Oregon was identifying himself "Mike Finkel, New York Times." That was the identification Christian Longo gave the FBI when they arrested him in Mexico in February 2002 for the four Oregon homicides. The timing was, in a strange way, fortuitous for Finkel. His string of New York Times Magazine covers had come to an abrupt and scandalous end when it was discovered that his piece on Ivory Coast cocoa plantations invented a composite character. Finkel, nursing his wounds back at his Montana home, wrote to Longo in prison while he awaited trial: "At the same time that you were using my name, I lost my own." Their resulting meetings quickly led to a 2005 book, partly about Longo, partly a mea culpa for Finkel. Now it's a movie starring Jonah Hill as Finkel and James Franco as Longo. It's not the bromance you may have been expecting between the two, but it's a bromance nevertheless. "True Story" has its issues — neither Franco nor Hill, talented as they are, are suited to their parts — but its biggest problem is at its heart. In grafting Finkel's selfserving story of career revival onto a grisly tragedy, "True Story," though handsomely made, is entirely misguided. When the final credits dramatically inform us that Finkel never again wrote for the Times, the movie has laughably overestimated our sympathies for the disgraced reporter's resume. "True Story," the feature debut of the British theater director Rupert Goold, was clearly conceived as a way to play with truth versus fiction in storytelling (a favorite topic of Franco's). The film is its own dramatization of real events, of course, too. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language and some disturbing material." RUNNING TIME: 99 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

"Ex Machina"

Cinema has always been fascinated by androids. From "Metropolis" to "Blade Runner," the juxtaposition of humans next to their artificial form has provided endless hours of stories that can be as exhilarating as they are poignant. Tough moral questions about consciousness and humanity go down easier when hidden under the glossy sheen of genre, after all. With so many now-classics preceding it, "Ex Machina" might seem like just the latest flavor in the android movie shop. And yet, without necessarily expanding on this well-trod territory or innovating contemporary science-fiction, by going deep on a simple construct, "Ex Machina" establishes itself as a unique and deeply unsettling psychological thriller that's both necessary and unforgettable. The construct in question: How good is this android? Writer-director Alex Garland in his feature debut tells the story with basically only three characters: Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), the sharp programmer whose life is upended to spend a few days in a remote location with his company's

April 30, 2015

billionaire CEO and brilliant recluse, Nathan (Oscar Isaac); and Nathan's creation, Ava (Alicia Vikander). Caleb thinks he's won a prize and a retreat with a genius. It's only when he arrives that Nathan tells him his real purpose is to advise Nathan on whether or not Ava passes the human or machine test. Nathan's home embodies the modern design ideal of organic architecture and he and Caleb discuss Ava as Schubert and Bach play faintly in the background. Big, fascinating ideas fly around at rapid speed, but "should" does not seem to be in their vocabulary. Garland builds a subtle tension by making everything slightly off, from the concrete, bunker-like bedrooms, to the occasional power-outages and the militaristic security methods. Caleb is never at ease and, as the audience's window into this strange world, neither are we. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "for graphic nudity, language, sexual references and some violence." RUNNING TIME: 108 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

"Child 44"

The best-selling novel "Child 44" by Tom Rob Smith runs well over 400 pages, and that's perhaps the first hint as to why the movie based on it seems to veer in 40 different directions. It's a political movie. It's a war film. It's a crime thriller. And suddenly, late in the proceedings, it becomes an action movie. At 137 minutes, the movie's also a good half-hour too long. It's as if director Daniel Espinosa and screenwriter Richard Price felt the need to include something from each of the book's pages. Ultimately, what we have left is a bloated, grim, underwhelming affair, which is unfortunate — because the movie starts out with a lot going for it. Besides the popular source material and the compelling backdrop of fear and repression in the Soviet Union under Josef Stalin, the film has an excellent cast starring the always interesting Tom Hardy as a self-questioning military hero, intelligence operative and amateur gumshoe. (It's worth noting that one opinion in Russia has already been registered: that of the government, which on Wednesday scrapped the film's release there, saying it distorts history and casts the Soviet Union as "a sort of Mordor, populated by physically and morally defective sub-humans, a bloodbath on screen involving Orcs and vampires.") After a sad prologue from his boyhood, we meet Leo Demidov (Hardy, sporting a very thick Russian accent) in World War II Berlin, where he becomes an accidental hero by virtue of being the one to raise his country's flag above the Reichstag. We then jump to 1953; Demidov is an officer in the MGB, the Soviet intelligence agency (and KGB forerunner), tasked with tracking down traitors. This is a world where, as one character notes, it can be "just our turn" to be denounced and arrested as a spy. And indeed, things turn difficult for Demidov when his MGB boss, Kuzman (Vincent Cassel) orders him to investigate his own wife, Raisa (a sensitive Noomi Rapace). At the same time, Demidov has hit on something disturbing: The young son of a colleague has been killed by the train tracks. Demidov knows from seeing the body — naked, and sliced up — that the boy was murdered, but he's ordered to tell the family it was a train accident. Why? Because in Stalin's worker's paradise, murder doesn't exist; it only exists in decadent capitalist societies. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for violence, some disturbing images, language and a scene of sexuality." RUNNING TIME: 137 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

"Ex Machina" hits all the right buttons By LINDSEY BAHR Associated Press Cinema has always been fascinated by androids. And yet, without necessarily expanding on this well-trod territory or innovating contemporary science-

fiction, by going deep on a simple construct, "Ex Machina" establishes itself as a unique and deeply unsettling psychological thriller that's both necessary and unforgettable. The construct in question: How good is this android? Writer-director Alex Garland in his feature debut tells the story with basically only three characters: Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), the sharp programmer whose life is upended to spend a few days in a remote location with his company's billionaire CEO and brilliant recluse, Nathan (Oscar Isaac); and Nathan's creation, Ava (Alicia Vikander). Caleb thinks he's won a prize and a retreat with a genius. It's only when he arrives that Nathan tells him his real purpose is to advise

Nathan on whether or not Ava passes the human or machine test. A big reason for that is Nathan. Sure, the

dorky Caleb is supposed to be intellectually disarmed by the fact that Nathan created the world's most powerful search engine as a teenager. But Isaac, with his shaved head, thick black beard and burly but fit physique, is an intimidating physical presence as well. He's a bruiser, a genius, and a charismatic eccentric who spends his days boxing and his nights getting blind drunk alone. Isaac, who is quickly proving himself to be one of the greats of his generation, plays Nathan as a celebrity of sorts — the kind who is always requesting that the other person just be more "real," which usually has the opposite effect. But it's really Ava's film. Her form, too, is distracting.

Crowe shines as director, actor By MEGAN LEHMANN The Hollywood Reporter LOS ANGELES (AP) — Making his directorial debut with the brawny and big-hearted Australian war drama "The Water Diviner," Russell Crowe taps a deep well of symbolism, cultural empathy and good oldfashioned storytelling. Crowe, who also stars as a grieving father stoically bulldozing through Turkey in search of three sons missing in action after the World War I battle at Gallipoli, is on shakier ground with a gooey romantic subplot, which brings to mind the actor's out-of-his-element performance in the Ridley Scott rom-com "A Good Year." With the centenary of Anzac — Australia's WWI commemorative holiday — commemorations on the horizon,

Australians will likely clasp this locally made, handsomely mounted melodrama to their collective bosom. Overseas prospects are less promising, despite the presence of the thinking man's Bond girl Olga Kurylenko ("Quantum of Solace") and a wealth of exotic, postcard-pretty locales. Mysticism laces the screenplay by Andrew Knight and Andrew Anastasios, offering an otherworldly counterpoint to the gruesome realities of war and its relentlessly painful aftermath. This is a film that doesn't glorify war a bit, despite the legend that has grown up around the tens of thousands of Australian and New Zealand troops sacrificed during the failed offensive on the Gallipoli peninsula in 1915. Following a punchy opening that,

unconventionally for an Australian war film, provides a sympathetic view from behind enemy lines, we switch to the parched outback of Australia, where Crowe's farmer, Joshua Connor, is digging for wells. Water-divining — known as dorelies on the practitioner's psychic gift for locating his treasure beneath the ground. This talent comes in handy when Crowe, prompted by a tragedy on home soil that compounds the anguish of losing three sons in battle four years previously, makes his way to Turkey determined to find closure by bringing his boys' remains home. Landing in Constantinople, Joshua secures lodgings at a hotel run by a cagey Muslim widow named Ayshe (Kurylenko), whose riotous beauty refuses to be tamed by a succession of frumpy get-ups.

From here, Crowe's film takes an unexpected turn, becoming both an intuitive exploration of Turkish culture and a respectful assertion that, although the Anzacs lost at Gallipoli, the Turks were losers too. The idea that grief confronts all nationalities caught up in the so-called Great War is embodied in the person of senior Turkish military officer Major Hasan (Turkish actor Yilmaz Erdogan). When Crowe circumvents the roadblocks thrown up by military bureaucracy and turns up in a fishing boat on the shores of Gallipoli, Major Hasan becomes an unlikely ally in the search for his sons. Hasan and offsider Sgt. Jemal (Cem Yilmaz) are helping Australian officer Cyril Hughes (Jai Courtney) and the Imperial War Graves unit in the recovery and burial of Australian

April 30, 2015

soldiers from the now-desolate battlefield. Explaining his willingness to help the broken but resolute farmer, Hasan replies: "He's the only father who came looking." The film gives a lot of space to emotions, but Crowe reins in his outsized personality to contribute an affecting, understated performance and, as director, underplays the allegories, particularly the recurring water motif, so they seep through the narrative organically. He also has surrounded himself with talented co-stars — Ryan Corr's heartrending turn in the grisly flashback battlefield scenes is particularly memorable — and a top-drawer crew. Oscarwinner Andrew Lesnie's (The Lord of the Rings) cinematography is so exquisite that sometimes it alone propels the story.

The summer of sequels NEW YORK (AP) — "I'll be back," the line Arnold Schwarzenegger first uttered more than 30 years ago in that indelible manly monotone, belongs to the Terminator, of course. But it also might as well be the official slogan of the summer movie season. It's the time of year when H o l l y w o o d ' s o l d e r, r e l i a b l e brands, with the tenacity of Schwarzenegger's lethal cyborg, claw their way back onto the big screen in a popcorn parade of bigbudget sequels, reboots and re-dos. That's nothing new, but the extent of the sequel spinning is. The sequel expansion — as headlong as Tom Cruise in the "Mission: Impossible" movies — runs in all directions, stretching into prequels, second-try reboots, spinoffs and franchises that are less linear, roman-numeral progressions than (as in the brimming Marvel world) whole universes of overlapping characters: fantasy realms to visit, not just stories to follow. To f u e l t h e p r o l i f e r a t i o n , Hollywood is dipping ever deeper into its vaults: 10 of this summer's most anticipated blockbusters have origins dating back more than three decades, including "Fantastic Four," ''The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," ''Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Terminator: Genisys," the fifth film in the series created by James Cameron in 1984. Schwarzenegger is back to say that he's back. Nostalgia and familiarity mingle with updated special effects and new cast members in these films to render something that hopefully feels fresh to moviegoers. As the "Fast and Furious" series (more profitable in its seventh installment than ever before) has proven this spring, the lifespan of the sequels no longer adheres to the old rules of inevitable decay — at least for now. The ever-lengthening life of franchises can make for some strange off-screen realities, and not just for 67-year-old Terminators. "Mad Max: Fury Road" (May 15), is returning decades later with its original creator, the Australian director George Miller. "One of the most jolting experiences of my life was to go to SXSW and watch 'Road Warrior: Mad Max 2' in a newly minted print for the first time in 32 years and then showing scenes from 'Fury Road' all these years later," says Miller. "It was a kind of a time travel. It was a strange but powerful experience." There is blunt mathematics behind the proliferating franchises. The top six summer films at the box office in 2013 were sequels. Last summer, all of the top 10 movies were sequels, reboots or hailed from well-known properties. This summer, the box-office seems nearly certain to be led by "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (May 1), the sequel to the 2012 superhero team-up original, the highest grossing-summer movie ever. With $1 billion-plus in box office assured, the financial imperative is, of course, enormous. "Age of Ultron" writerdirector Joss Whedon says "making more money would be swell," but a creative purpose is still necessary. "I wanted to do better," says Whedon. "I wanted to spend more time with these guys. I just introduced them, and the movie ended. I wanted to spend time with them as a team, as comrades, with

W h i l e M a r v e l ' s " Av e n g e r s " marches forward (a two-part sequel is planned), other franchises have progressed less predictably. "Magic Mike," made for just $7 million, opened in June 2012 with a remarkable $39.1 million and went on to gross $167 million worldwide. A male stripper romp that winks to the real past of producer-star Channing Tatum, it returns July 1 with "Magic Mike XXL." It's the classic kind of sequel — a road trip — albeit one with an especially

On the Edge of the Weekend

untraditional destination: a Florida stripper convention Tatum attended before his acting career took off. The premise still makes director Gregory Jacobs chuckle. "We started thinking about a sequel, honestly, really early on," says Jacobs, a producer and assistant director on the first "Magic Mike," now taking over for director Steven Soderbergh. "We all loved this idea of a road trip with these guys; we just couldn't fit it into the first movie." "Magic Mike XXL" is joined by a handful of sequels that come from fairly recent films: the teen musical

"Pitch Perfect 2" on May 15; the "Despicable Me" spinoff "Minions" on July 10; Seth MacFarlane's comedy "Ted 2" on June 26. But the bulk of the summer season will depend on older franchises, some of which are counting on moviegoer amnesia. "Jurassic World" (June 12), stuck in development for a decade, is the fourth installment in the franchise that has been dormant (but not extinct) since 2001's "Jurassic Park III." Its star, Chris Pratt, led last summer's runaway hit, "Guardians of the Galaxy." "Fantastic Four" (Aug. 7),

starring Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan, is an attempt to reboot the Marvel foursome after the little loved "Fantastic Four" gave it a go just 10 years ago, and was followed by a 2007 "Silver Surfer" sequel. The futuristic "Tomorrowland" (May 22), directed by Brad Bird ("Ratatouille," ''The Incredibles") and co-starring George Clooney, comes from the producers behind "Pirates of the Caribbean" and hopes to turn another Disney theme park attraction into a massive franchise. "Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation" (July 31), the fifth entry to the Tom Cruise action series, isn't the only film trading off an old television show. "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." (Aug. 14) is Guy Ritchie's take on the '60s spy series. HBO's "Entourage" (June 5) will also get a big-screen swan song about four years after the show's finale. Wi t h s o m a n y n a m e - b r a n d films clustered together in the summer, box-office analysts like Paul Dergarabedian, senior media a n a l y s t f o r R e n t r a k , p re d i c t s this season will lead Hollywood to a record year. That would be welcome news for the industry, following a limp 2014 summer. If summer 2015 is to reverse last summer's downturn, it will need a few of the original films to pop, too. One thing 2015 has over 2014 is a Pixar movie. After a year off, Pixar will release "Inside Out," about the voices inside the mind of a young girl, on June 19. The comedy options, too, may be better. "Spy" (June 5) stars Melissa McCarthy in a spoof thriller, and "Trainwreck" (July 17), from director Judd Apatow, stars Amy Schumer as a monogamy-averse career woman.

L

ongtime St. Louis improvisor Howie Hirshfield and his improvisation (improv) troupe Not Quite Right (NQR) will present a cutting edge version of their improv and sketch show on May 9th at the Regional Arts Commission (RAC).

The show, dubbed “Not Quite Tight,” is slated to take more comedy risks than ever before, including the addition of a

burlesque performance by special guest Pinny Yearned of The Randy Dandies. NQR sets will consist of improv games, audience participation, and live sketch comedy. Pinny will keep interests piqued with bawdy storytelling, jokes, and a comedic burlesque performance to boot. "NQR is the culmination of several years of working with and fine tuning other Improv performances I've directed... we are inspired by the great performers that have come through Second City,” said NQR founder and artistic director Howie Hirshfield, a New York transplant to the Midwest.

April 30, 2015

Pinny Yearned, played by comedic actress and writer Shannon Nara, says that her performance will “knock your knickers off!" NQR performs throughout the Midwest and on online video shorts. Players include Howie Hirshfield, Sarah Hirshfield, Clayton Bury, Denise Saylor Phelan, Annina Christensen and Shannon Nara. Writing responsibilities are shared by the players and newly joined sketch writer, James Scheffel. ”Not Quite Tight" is scheduled for two shows May 9th at 8 and 10 pm at the RAC at 6128 Delmar. Ticket and show information can be found at notquiterightimprov.com.
