People Ladybugs and more Edwardsville resident Harold Duvall has an interesting story to tell By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge When the call came in from Harold Duvall, it was to share his ladybug collection with the community. However, after meeting and getting to know Harold, you find out that he has so much more to share than his fantastic ladybug collection. Harold is a retired R.N. who has spent much of his life caring and giving to others. He lived in New York City for 41 years, in the same apartment the entire time. He worked in a hospital, for private patients in their homes and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “People would ask me when they found out I worked there as a nurse, why an art museum needed nurses. Well, that was simple. They had slick hardwood floors in some sections of the museum and a number of ladies who would wear high heels. There were a lot of wrist and ankle injuries,” said Harold. He said the museum actually employed a number of nurses to care for visiting patrons. He began by working the parties at the museum, but then started working other shifts to relieve the other nurses. After living in New York for 41 years, Harold’s brother invited him to visit Overland Park, Kan., thinking that Harold would consider moving their after he retired. The whole last year that he lived in New York, Harold would fly to Kansas about every six weeks. He would spend two or three days there and would also attend the community college there to take courses he needed to keep up his nursing license. Eventually Harold did decide to move to Overland Park, Kan. At that time, he had a collection of mustache cups and saucers, actually over 300 of them. He also had some

very heavy hand-built dressers and shelves that his father had made for his collection. It was quite a trial, but Harold moved the entire collection to Overland Park, Kan., where he lived for 14 years with his brother. By the time he moved to Kansas, he had enough frequent flyer miles that he was able to take his brother to Europe for a 16 day trip, first class, nearly all paid for. What little money they did spend was for souvenirs. So he shared his trip with his brother. Unfortunately, the last year that Harold lived in Kansas, his brother acquired throat cancer. Harold cared for his brother throughout his illness, including the last weeks of his life, which were very difficult for him. His sister, Velma, would come and help relieve him at times and talked Harold into considering moving to Carlinville. His sister was on the historical society board of directors there and knew of a trailer on the museum property that would be perfect for him. After his brother passed, Harold did pack up and move to Carlinville. His mustache cup and saucer collection traveled with him once again, but during his stay there, Harold’s sister talked him into donating the collection to the historical museum in Carlinville. He generously donated the entire c o l l e c t i o n so that other area residents could see and enjoy it. The collection is still there, if anyone is in Carlinville and wants to take a gander. While living in Carlinville, Harold enrolled in the Master Gardener course through the University of Illinois. It was a tough course, lasting for 14 weeks. Harold aced the class, but it wasn’t easy. He also began a group called Senior Net. Starting out with the intent of helping seniors to learn to connect by using a computer and the

Internet, Harold’s group eventually grew to well over 300 members. “I would keep a card on each and every member and call each one at least once a year and have a conversation with them. It kept them interested and the group just grew,” said Harold. After Harold left, the group divided into smaller groups, but they still meet today. After a period of time, Harold decided to move to Edwardsville to be closer to his sister, Velma Schmidt, who works at the Episcopal Church in town. He had since begun a collection of ladybug themed items. He has several hundred items in his collection. Harold has collected – cups, dishes, a deviled egg plate, shoe laces, earrings, books, bookmarks, door stops, and so many more. Not long after Harold moved to Edwardsville, he decided he wanted to share his collection with the local public. He called the Edwardsville Public Library and asked if there was a way he could share his display. The library made arrangements for him to bring in his collection. They assisted him

in displaying the items, (which is just a portion of his collection) and it is now on display in the case at the lower level just outside the children’s section of the library. When Harold moved here, he asked his landlords to allow him to bring an iron patio set that meant a lot to him. He offered to share it with the other tenants in this complex, knowing that they would enjoy it too. Not only did his landlords allow him to do that, but they have since begun building a nice patio area for Harold’s set, which of course all of his neighbors will be free to enjoy too. The patio set isn’t the only thing he shares; Harold has planted a number of flower gardens and a vegetable garden on the property, at the blessing of his landlords and neighbors. Although he enjoys gardening and is more than happy to work in the gardens, he hopes to share the vegetables with those around him and wants everyone to be able to enjoy the beauty of the flowers. Maybe one of the most important things that Harold

shares is the gift of life. Harold began about two years ago, while living in Carlinville, to donate blood platelets. He has taken good care of himself, eating plenty of green leafy vegetables and other healthy foods in order to keep up his monthly donations. It takes approximately 90 minutes each time he donates. As of July of this year, Harold will have donated his seventh gallon of platelets! That is an amazing accomplishment, not just because of the amounts he has donated, but every unit he donates helps three children with cancer. So if you are doing the math, in two years he has helped 150 children. This is an example of the gift of sharing, maybe like no other. So the original phone call may have informed me about a ladybug collection that Harold was sharing with the community, b u t t h e re s t o f t h e s t o r y l e d me to get to know the heart of Harold Duvall. Ladybug collector, mustache cup and saucer collector, nurse, Master Gardener, platelet donor and sharing heart. May we all be more like Harold.

Caveman Zipline set for opening Meramec Caverns is in the final construction phase for its new Caveman Zipline, the first zipline in the St. Louis area. An opening date of Saturday, May 1, has been announced. This high-adrenaline, extreme a d v e n t u re i s a n a d d i t i o n t o Meramec Caverns’ lineup of attractions and operates at the Caverns in Stanton, Mo. Zippers’ 80-minute guided tour begin at a tower by the Caverns’ main entrance and soars across the river, through treetop canopies and the natural cave bluffs of the Meramec. The last zip again traverses the river basin at 80 feet above the Meramec. “We’re constructing four separate ziplines,” said Lester Turilli, Jr., manager of this new attraction, “plus three swinging rope bridges. There are two towers on the side of the cave entrance and six across the river.” The zips vary in length from 250 to 1200 feet and zippers reach speeds of up to 50 mph. “It’s been in the planning for

about two years now,” Turilli added, “but development just started this March. The building crew sets off daily in boats to cross the river to the construction site. People People planner Garden to host Chinese Culture Days Experience traditional Chinese arts, music, culture and cuisine with Chinese Culture Days at the Missouri Botanical Garden, Saturday and Sunday, May 15 and 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for children (ages three to 12) and Garden members. Purchase tickets in advance online at www.mobot.org. Festivities begin Saturday at 11 a.m. with a grand parade led by a dazzling 70-foot, 24legged dragon winding through the crowds to dispel bad luck and evil spirits. Traditional martial artists and lion dancers follow, accompanied by gongs and drums, to bring in good luck for the Year of the Tiger of the

Chinese zodiac. The parade will be repeated again at 2 p.m. both days. A host of activities surround the Grigg Nanjing Friendship Garden, also known as the Chinese Garden. The private “Scholar’s Garden” is filled with pavilions, bridges and decorated pavements, affirming the idea that Chinese gardens are built, not planted. These structures reflect the traditional Chinese shan shu—mountain and water—landscape. Stones around a central pool of water symbolize the five sacred mountains in China. Take a guided tour of the Chinese Garden hourly between noon and 4 p.m. Experience lessons in the ancient martial art of T’ai Ji at 1 and 3 p.m. Throughout the day, enjoy tea tastings and Chinese traditional music, played on the ancient pipa and Gu Zheng

Band Bio: Split Lip Rayfield By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge You know that you may not be the “local garage band” when you have earned a slot in Wikipedia. Split Lip Rayfield has made their way around the Midwest, including stops at Stagger Inn in Edwardsville. Here is an excerpt from their Wikipedia entry: “Split Lip Rayfield is a band from Wichita, Kan., featuring Kirk Rundstrom (guitar), Eric Mardis (banjo), Wayne Gottstine (mandolin), and Jeff Eaton (bass). Early on, the group’s gimmick was Eaton’s homemade one-string bass, named Stitchgiver, built from the gastank of a 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis and a piece of hickory and strung with one piece of Weedwhacker line. The name “Split Lip Rayfield” was inspired by a real-life person of that name who lived in Eaton’s hometown of Gumbo, Mo., when Eaton was a boy. The trio of Rundstrom, Eaton and Mardis recorded the album “Split Lip Rayfield” in 1998; Bloodshot released it that same year. 1999 saw the release of “In the Mud,” the first album on which the group performed as a quartet. The band’s next album, “Never Make It Home,” also achieved success, as did the subsequent tour. Following the “Never Make It Home” tour, Split Lip Rayfield took a short hiatus so that its members could refocus on family life and side projects. Upon reassembling, the group traveled to New Orleans to make a record with friend and fellow performer Mike West. The resulting disc, “Should Have Seen It Coming,” won critical praise. In 2005, Gottstine left the touring group for personal reasons. The remaining trio continued to tour; however. Gottstine returned in Summer 2006 after Kirk Rundstrom’s cancer diagnosis. Kirk Rundstrom passed away February 22, 2007.” Remaining trio of Mardis, Gottstine and Eaton continue on to rock the way they knew Rundtrom would want them to. Music Tuning in Pat Metheny to visit the Touhill Wo r l d re n o w n e d g u i t a r i s t / composer Pat Metheny will bring his Orchestrion Tour to St. Louis May 8. The performance at the Touhill Performing Arts Center is on Saturday, May 8, at 8 p.m. in the Anheuser-Busch Performance Hall. Metheny, whom The New York Times calls “easily one of the most enterprising jazz musicians of his generation,” recently returned f ro m h i s c r i t i c a l l y a c c l a i m e d European tour for an early April kick-off of his six-week, 37-city North American tour. These tours are in support of his Orchestrion album, which came out in January on Nonesuch Records and has received critical praise from The New York Times, Associated Press, Village Voice and Billboard, among many other publications. Orchestrion brings a musical idea from the late 19th and early 20th centuries—a large mechanical multi-instrument device that utilizes actual orchestral instruments of various types, called an “orchestrion”—to the technologies of today. Metheny’s concept includes a l a rg e e n s e m b l e o f a c o u s t i c instruments—including several pianos, drum kit, marimbas, “guitar-bots,” dozens of percussion instruments and even cabinets of carefully tuned bottles. Ray knew he needed a hit s o n g f o r t h e s h o w, a n d t h e end result of three days spent in his basement writing was “Everything Is Beautiful”, his first #1 hit on the Pop charts, and the song that won him his first Grammy for Male Vocalist of The Year. In 1974, while flying to Los Angeles, Ray read an article about a new fad among college students called “streaking”. Inspired, he jotted down a few notes and when he got h o m e , h e w ro t e “ T h e S t re a k ” , Ray’s second #1 hit on the Pop Charts. For the next 10 years, Ray would record chart-topping hits, including “Shriners Convention”, “Mississippi Squirrel Revival” and “It’s Me Again Margaret”. 1991 brought the opening of his two thousand seat Ray Stevens Theatre in Branson,

Missouri. Considered one of the pioneers of the “Branson Boom”, Ray performed 12 shows a week during the season to over 1.6 million fans. During the next two years, Ray would include his Branson show in his video releases, selling millions of videos worldwide. After 1993, Ray decided to take his show on t h e ro a d , b u t s t i l l o w n e d h i s theatre in Branson, and leased it to other productions. “Don McKay”

First-time writer-director Jake Goldberger delivers plenty of wicked humor with his “Blood Simple”-style film noir. It works to a degree thanks to the eager cast led by Thomas Haden Church, Elisabeth Shue and Melissa Leo. But the laughs are disjointed as each character one-ups the next with crazier and crazier revelations. Haden Church stars as a lonely janitor reunited with his dying high school sweetie (Shue), with Leo as the woman’s stern, suspicious nurse. Nothing and no one is quite who they seem among this threesome and their odd associates. Goldberger is stingy about revealing anything for much of the way, the movie becoming an endless tease. When the movie finally spills its secrets, they come in a torrent, the story lapsing into silliness just as the suspense is supposedly peaking. The climax remains very entertaining, but it’s more of a film-noir spoof ending that feels too madcap after the long, nearly static setup Goldberger maintained early on. RATED: R for language and some violence. RUNNING TIME: 90 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“Date Night”

Steve Carell and Tina Fey’s night out is not so much a bad date as a sad date. These are two of the funniest people ever on television, yet this big-screen comedy is a dreary, uninspired waste of their talents — and those of the top-name cast inexplicably appearing in throwaway roles, including Mark Wahlberg, Mark Ruffalo and James Franco. The movie manages the barest glimmers of the droll humor of Carell’s “The Office” and the snappy wit of Fey’s “30 Rock.” Carell and Fey have an easy, affectionate rapport as run-down parents whose big evening out leads to mistaken identity and sets them on the run from crooks. The actors try hard to make it work, but the lowbrow sensibilities of director Shawn Levy (the “Night at the Museum” movies) leave them tottering through painful verbal exchanges, lame stunts and other dreadfully unfunny hijinks. RATED: PG-13 for sexual and crude content throughout, language, some violence and a drug reference. RUNNINNG TIME: 88 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

Jennifer Lopez, who is front and center and looking flawless at all times. The first time we see her character, Zoe, she’s at the doctor’s office with her feet in the stirrups being artificially inseminated, wearing false eyelashes and perfect lip gloss. In case we couldn’t possibly imagine what she’s thinking, the script from Kate Angelo (a former sitcom writer) offers this helpful voiceover: “Oh, God, I hope this works. I’ve wanted this for so long.” Yeah, it’s like that. Director Alan Poul (who also has a TV background) hits every obvious note, complete with pratfalls, pregnancy cliches and cheesy pop-music cues that signal the characters’ emotions in painfully literal fashion. He also cuts away to Zoe’s adorable Boston terrier for cheap reaction shots so frequently, it could be a drinking game. All these devices are in service of a plot that’s pretty thin. Zoe is prepared to have a baby on her own, only to meet and fall for the hunky Stan (O’Loughlin). Since they get together pretty early, the rest of the movie consists of contrived flare-ups that threaten to keep them apart. RATED: PG-13 for sexual content including references, some crude material and language. RUNNING TIME: 104 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

“The Secret in Their Eyes”

Murder and love, melodrama and laughter intertwine in this long and winding Argentine film, the surprise winner of the foreign-language Oscar this year. To say that writerdirector Juan Jose Campanella’s movie is all over the place would be unfair, and inaccurate — he shows a sure hand technically, especially in a lengthy, single-take shot that will make you hold your breath. But even that scene, accomplished as it is, seems to come out of nowhere. The performances are what frequently hold the film together when it seems at loose ends, namely from stars Ricardo Darin, Soledad Villamil and Guillermo Francella. “The Secret in Their Eyes” skips back and forth in time between an unresolved 1974 rape and murder and 1999, when a retired criminal court investigator still finds himself haunted by the crime. Darin’s Benjamin Esposito is writing a novel about the case, which inspires him to visit Irene (Villamil), who’s now a judge but was then a young, brilliant colleague for whom he felt a love that also went unresolved. So “The Secret in Their Eyes is a murder mystery — and since Campanella has directed episodes of “Law & Order SVU,” he handles that aspect of the story efficiently — but it’s also a romance, one that gets downright cringe-inducing at times. Still, the commanding Darin has an easy rapport with Villamil, but his interaction with Francella is even more intriguing. A longtime comic actor, Francella plays Benjamin’s long-ago partner, a quick-witted drunk who looks nerdy and buttoned-

down but is actually a total mess. RATED: R for a rape scene, violent images, some graphic nudity and language. RUNNING TIME: 129 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“The Losers”

Deadly only in its dullness, this coma-inducing, comic-bookadapted action flick aims to serve as a placeholder until “Iron Man 2” arrives with the summer’s heavy artillery. That “The Losers” and its ragtag band of Special Forces operatives fail to achieve even that modest goal speaks to the filmmakers’ utter lack of imagination as well as the busy smugness with which they offer their smorgasbord of nothingness. The comicbook source material originated as a “man-crush love letter” to “Lethal Weapon” screenwriter Shane Black. But instead of producing a heady homage to slick, ’80s action movies or a winking salute to Sam Peckinpah and his wild bunch of losers or even a faithful adaptation of a serviceable comic, the filmmakers have watered down the material to the point of irrelevance. RATED: PG-13 for scenes of intense action and violence, a scene of sensuality, and language. RUNNING TIME: 98 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

“Oceans”

Fish that look like rocks — or scarves, or a jeweled brooch, or anything but fish — are among the fascinating underwater creatures that inhabit “Oceans.” This stunningly beautiful documentary is the second in a series from the new Disneynature label, which gave us “Earth” exactly one year ago on Earth Day. Whereas that film followed wildlife across the globe, “Oceans” takes a plunge deep into its waters, with jaw-dropping results. Directors Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud provide a truly immersive experience, without the three-dimensional IMAX effects of the similar — and similarly awe-inspiring — “Under the Sea 3D” from 2009. Having spent seven years working on “Oceans,” including four years gathering footage, they’ve created countless how’d-theyget-that? shots. The narration from Pierce Brosnan can get a bit cutesy at times, but that’s probably to make “Oceans” as palatable as possible for the young viewers to whom much of the film is intended. Like its recent predecessors, “Oceans” also contains a a message about the importance of protecting our underwater expanses and the beings that call them home from pollution and climate change: familiar but, unfortunately, still necessary words to hear. RATED: G. RUNNING TIME: 84 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

After years of looking for the right guy, Zoe is prepared to have a baby on her own, only to meet and fall for the hunky Stan (O’Loughlin) just as she’s discovered she’s pregnant. Their meet-cute couldn’t possibly be cuter: Both hop into the same New York cab in the pouring rain. And Stan couldn’t possibly be more perfect.

out and walk away when he finds out Zoe is expecting? How will he react when he discovers she’s having twins? Will Zoe freak out and walk away from Stan because of her childhood abandonment issues? Will there be a mad dash to the hospital once her water breaks? The answers to these questions are never really in doubt. “The Back-up Plan” actually could

have been helpful in addressing a situation in which so many women find themselves: wanting to be mothers, but unwilling to compromise to be with the wrong man to accomplish that goal. Instead, it presents the fellow members of Zoe’s single mothers’ group as tattooed, fringy freaks hell-bent on home water births and smugly breastfeeding their kids until age 3.

On the other end of the spectrum is Zoe’s wisecracking best friend, Mona (Michaela Watkins of “Saturday Night Live”), a mother of four kids who are constantly running around and screaming. Admittedly, she gets the few funny lines “The Backup Plan” has to offer. Lavin (as Zoe’s Nana) and Bosley (as Nana’s longtime nursing-home fiance) just look embarrassed in their few scenes.

“The Losers” lives up to its name By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge Action comedies are all the rage right now. Date Night proved deft at one and not the other. Kick-Ass showed an interesting take on the genre. I have high hopes for a snarky Robert Downey, Jr. in the premiere of next week’s Iron Man 2. And later in the Summer? The Expendables will bring Willis, Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, and Jet Li together in a project that has ‘80s action fans drooling in anticipation. To fill the gap is The Losers, a very terrible movie about a Special Operations team that fights back against a frame-up that smeared their good names. I guess in this regard we could compare it to The A-Team, but that movie doesn’t come out until June. Though I did not favor The Losers, I loved The Losers, the five central characters in this

story, based on a DC Comics adventure. The men fit a nearly stereotypical archetype, but tread carefully enough to still be extremely likable throughout their increasingly perplexing and over-thought mission. Their field commander, Colonel Clay (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), is gruff and barks orders with a mean, gravelly tone. He has a soft spot for a pretty face and women get him into lots of trouble. He also treats with kid gloves the team’s two younger member: Pooch (Columbus Short), a master of transportations who can drive or fly any contraption made to move people, and Jensen (Chris Evans, the newly-minted Captain America), a technology wizard with a talent for lightningfast overlapping dialogue. Cougar (Oscar Jaenada) is the group’s sharpshooter and specializes is taking out targets, both human and mechanical, from long, long distances. He wears a pretty neat hat and says very little.

His slack is picked up by Roque (Idris Elba), a scarred knife-fighter with a lot of anger problems. He is Clay’s second-in-command, his best friend, and his biggest foe. During a top-secret reconnaissance mission, Clay’s team breaks protocol to rescue twentyfive Bolivian orphans who have been forced into drug-smuggling for a cartel magnate (Peter Francis James). The CIA agent who authorized their original operation, Max (Jason Patric), frames them for villainy, assumes they’re dead, and makes many more clichés that takes action movies down a peg or two. He wears only white suits, sports a single glove to hide a debilitating injury, and kills with simple cynicism. Worst of all, his jokes are so unfunny that they knotted my stomach. Max is far more offensive than any of the terrible James Bond villains that dotted the ‘70s. He’s like Dr. Evil, with lamer lines and a dopier henchman (Holt McCallany).

A vixen by the name of Aisha (Zoe Saldana, late of Avatar) turns their outlook around when she decides to help Clay back into the states for the price of only the madman, Max. She flashes her big brown eyes, an even bigger pistol, and promises to restore their reputation when they get home. The team jumps at the chance, hopeful to see their families again. Pooch’s wife is about to have their first baby and Jensen’s niece’s soccer team - the Petunias - has a big championship game coming up (see the style of humor?) that he’d like to attend. Several bizzare stunts, a series of even more pointless red-herrings, and a doublecross later (one that feels very forced), I left feeling satisfied, but certainly not pleased. ••• The Losers runs 102 minutes and is rated PG13 for sequences of action and violence, a scene of sensuality, and language. Robert’s ranking: one star out of four.

Travel Travel briefs Cruise line CEO looking favorably at Alaska market S E AT T L E ( A P ) — H o l l a n d America Line is going to look far more favorably at bringing more vacationers to Alaska now that the state’s passenger head tax has been reduced, the president and CEO of the company said Monday. The Seattle-based cruise line has long since decided how many ships to devote to Alaska this year and next. But CEO Stein Kruse said pro-business actions this year by Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell and the state Legislature “will certainly be a positive influencing factor” as the company makes its deployment decisions for 2012. “I can’t say right here and today what we will do because those decisions haven’t been made, but I can tell you that it’s a far more positive outlook than it has been for the last couple of years,” Kruse said. He spoke in an interview with The Associated Press on the bridge of the Holland America liner MS Amsterdam, which made a halfday call in Seattle as it wraps up a world cruise. Kruse stopped by to visit with Capt. Olav van der Waard and crew members of the 1,380-passenger ship, which next week begins a series of 14-day cruises from Seattle to Alaska. A few hours before adjourning last week, Alaska lawmakers passed a bill to lower the state head tax from $46 a passenger to $34.50. The measure was heavily pushed by Parnell and was key to a settling a federal lawsuit filed by the Alaska Cruise Association against the state. The association has blamed state regulations and tax costs for the expected loss of three ships and

about 142,000 passengers this season. Cruises are booked far in advance, and Kruse said figures indicate the total Alaska business will be down about 16 percent to 17 percent this year. He said that when 2010 deployment decisions were made two years ago, the recession was less a factor than Alaska’s business climate. “Alaska went through the hoops of trying to make it complicated for businesses like ours to operate up there,” he said. Holland America will have eight ships on Alaska runs from Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia, one more than in 2009, and 149 total departures from the two cities. Next year it will deploy seven ships making 125 total departures. S e a t t l e ’ s c ru i s e b u s i n e s s i s growing, with a record 223 port calls scheduled this year, five more than in 2009. Much of that stability has been at the expense of Vancouver as cruise lines seek to cut costs. The Port of Seattle says cruise ships and passengers account for $425 million in annual business revenue for the region and nearly $19 million annually in state and local tax revenues.

The Museum of 20th Century Warfare will display artifacts and uniforms from all branches of the military from 1910 through

Operation Desert Storm in Iraq. A model of the USS Indianapolis, which was sunk by Japanese torpedoes during World War II, also will be displayed. Armani hotel opens in Dubai’s Khalifa tower DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A luxury hotel crafted by designer Giorgio Armani opened Tuesday as the first landmark tenant in the world’s tallest skyscraper. The 160-room Armani Hotel Dubai is a welcome bit of good news for Dubai’s leaders after the troubled debut of the more than half-mile (828-meter) Burj Khalifa in January. An elevator malfunction forced a two-month closure of the spire’s observation deck — the only part of the tower open to the public. The Italian designer was on h a n d f o r Tu e s d a y ’ s o p e n i n g ceremony, which was delayed a week because of travel chaos from the Icelandic volcano. He said his goal was to build a comfortable and stylish hotel that would leave an impression. “I wanted something very important, something to be remembered,” Armani said, dressed in a dark T-shirt and white trousers. “Something not just for the present, but beyond.” Armani was joined by the chairman of Burj Khalifa’s developer Emaar Properties, which has a partnership to open more

Armani-branded hotels, including the next one in Milan. They have not disclosed financial details of their partnership. Armani’s Dubai outpost stretches from the base of the spindly, metaland-glass Burj through the eighth floor, then skips some two dozen stories before continuing on floors 38 and 39. It includes multiple restaurants, a spa and an outdoor swimming pool. Dubai’s newest five-star hotel is the first part of the 2,717 foot (828 meters) Burj Khalifa to open to the public since the 124th-floor observation deck welcomed its first visitors in January. The lookout unexpectedly shut down a month after the opening when an elevator malfunctioned. Emaar never disclosed details of what happened, which it attributed to unexpectedly high traffic and electrical problems. The deck quietly reopened earlier this month. The Burj Khalifa rises more than 160 stories, though the exact number of habitable floors is not known. Much of the building remains empty as work continues inside. Armani’s hotel will soon have competition. Rival Italian fashion house Gain Versace SpA plans to open its own luxury hotel in Dubai later this year. Its claim to fame: an

artificially cooled beach designed to keep sunbathing guests from getting too uncomfortable in the Gulf’s scorching summer heat.

Seeing the sights can earn Nebraska vacationers prizes LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Folks vacationing in Nebraska can win prizes if they see enough of the sights this summer. The state Travel and Tourism Division has come up with the Nebraska’s Byways Passport Program. Twenty-seven attractions are listed on a souvenir passport. These locations across the state also are where travelers can pick up the passport and start playing. Tourists receive a stamp at each stop. At the end of the trip, visitors send in a tear-out sheet from the passport. If the passport has nine stamps, travelers get a Nebraska Byways T-shirt; 18 stamps, a digital photo frame; and 27 stamps, a flip video camera. Fort de Chartes – a walk back in time By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Fort de Chartes State Historic Site is located near Prairie du Rocher. The site is the last of three 18th Century forts that were erected near the Mississippi River, by France’s colonial government. From 1720 to 1763, French administration of the Illinois Country was centered at the forts. Fort de Chartres State Historic site also preserves the archaeological remains of the earlier wooden forts and is managed by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. After years of wear from the elements, the fort was partially rebuilt and is what remains today for visitors to enjoy. The north wall, complete with bastions and gatehouse, contains musket ports and embrasures for cannons. An exceptionally popular event is the annual Rendezvous’ at the fort. Be sure to mark your calendars for the 40th Annual Rendezvous at Fort de Chartres on Saturday, June 5 and Sunday, June 6. The rendezvous is a recreation of the traditional French fur trapper’s holiday of the Eighteenth Century, and is one of the oldest and largest events of its kind in the United States. The 25th anniversary season of SIUE Arts & Issues comes to a close on May 15 when UMO Ensemble presents Zen Tales. This Seattle based theatre ensemble promises to stir the human spirit and incite the imagination as UMO monk clowns tell ancient Zen and Sufi stories through live music, masks, puppets and laughter. The UMO (Unidentified Moving Objects) Theatre history begins more than 20 years ago by a company committed to an ensemble of performers who create and compose their own productions. A creative process rooted in physical theatre, the ensemble’s basis for the creation and development of new works is made through improvisations in movement, character, vocalizing and writing. UMO Ensemble has created more than 20 original works for theatre and their material reflects a diverse range of style. Elizabeth Klob, UMO executive artist and director, explained that UMO Ensemble

was a “physical theatre.” “We use acrobatics, storytelling, mask, music – highly physical storytelling,” Klob said. The SIUE performance, Zen Tales, is one of “over 2,000 shows in the 22 plus years of UMO’s repertoire. This one in particular, not only are we revisiting it, we’re actually reworking it,” Klob said. “So we’re actually improving it, and making it a much more exciting show.” Zen Tales is based upon several ancient Zen, Sufi and Buddhist teaching stories that are then told through the eyes of European red nosed, monk clowns. ”It’s a funny show, and it’s very family friendly,” Klob said. “There are masks and aerial work and aerial tissue – kind of akin to what Cirque du Soleil does – we have aerial rope, a little bit of juggling, martial arts, acro-balancing. There’s stuff happening all over the place. So it’s basically this journey but told with these crazy clowns and it’s funny, it’s sweet and moving at times. There’s a lot of incredible physical feats in it as well.” Although UMO Ensemble has such a large

repertoire of shows to select from, Klob noted what she enjoyed most about the popular Zen Tales. “I think it’s episodic in nature in that they are vignettes,” Klob said. “I feel like it really does offer something for everyone. It’s just that every moment of the show offers a new opportunity to kind of engage in the theme. If for whatever reason, the first story doesn’t gel with you or speak to you, two minutes later you’ve got a new story, a new viewpoint or a different set of clowns giving you a different story. Grand Center is the arts and entertainment district located in Midtown St. Louis. It is home to more than 30 arts organizations that demonstrate the depth and diversity of the city’s cultural life. The district hosts more than 1,500 cultural events and welcomes over 1.5 million visitors annually. Grand Center ’s artistic renaissance began with the restoration of Powell Symphony Hall and the Fabulous Fox Theatre and continues today with the growing vitality of commercial and residential development, the addition of more cultural institutions, galleries and dining establishments as well as serving as the home for two of the area’s premiere large scale cultural events, the annual “Dancing in the Street” festival and “First Night – St. Louis” Grand Center ’s world-class art museums and galleries open their doors from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 14, for the annual spring art walk in Grand Center. Visitors are welcome to explore the district’s finest displays of visual art, check out the newest and old favorite dining establishments and enjoy lively music and street performers. The Arts Artistic adventures Grand Center Arts Academy now enrolling The time is now for St. Louis parents to enroll their children in the Grand Center Arts Academy, the first and only performing and visual arts charter school in the state of Missouri. For the first year only, the tuitionfree charter school, located at 711 N. Grand Ave. in the heart of the thriving, vibrant arts center of the region, Grand Center, will be accepting 225 students for grades 6 and 7 on a first-come, first-served basis. Enrollment will be conducted by a lottery system for all subsequent years. Students eligible to attend must be residents of the city of St. Louis or residents of St. Louis County and eligible to attend St. Louis Public Schools under the voluntary transfer program. All applicants will meet with Principal Lynne Glickert as part of the acceptance process. Once a student is accepted, he or she is guaranteed a spot in the Academy through high school graduation. The Academy will start with grades 6 and 7 this year and add a grade each subsequent year through grade 12 in 2015. Enrollment will be capped at that time at 750 students. After the 2010/2011 school year, students will be accepted by a lottery system. “We are trying to encourage parents to act now to enroll their children, because this is the only year that students can be guaranteed a spot,” said Glickert. “And once a student has been accepted, he or she stays with us through high school graduation.” Developer Steve Smith of the Lawrence Group has begun renovations for the school, which is located in the former Beaux Arts Building (across from Powell Symphony Hall) and will include 100,000 square feet and seven floors of classroom and studio space. In addition to providing a rigorous academic program including science, math, social studies and English, the school will offer world-class training in music, theater, visual art and dance. Students will have access to several performing and visual arts studios, a theater, digital arts room, photography studio, and keyboard laboratory. Along with its academics and arts, the performing arts school will focus on the core values of social justice and community. “Our goal is to foster well-rounded, talented students with a keen sensitivity to the world around them and send them well prepared into the next stage of their lives,” said Glickert. The middle and high school will offer access to some of the regions most esteemed institutions, including artist-in-residence partnerships with neighboring theaters, studios, music halls and galleries such as

Powell Symphony Hall, the Fox Theatre, Craft Alliance, the Black Rep, Circus Flora, Jazz at the Bistro, the Contemporary Art Museum, the Sheldon Concert Hall and the Grandel Square Theatre, just to name a few. Unique St. Louis art on display at the Arch Jefferson National Expansion Memorial will host a special exhibit from St. Louis artist Sheila Harris at the Old Courthouse now through Aug. 22. Created especially for the memorial, the exhibit consists of nearly 40 watercolor paintings of buildings that once stood on the Arch grounds. Harris’ “portraits” of buildings depict structures from several generations of the city’s architectural history illustrating how the landscape on the riverfront evolved over time. The paintings are grouped based on four historic and stylistic eras on the riverfront. In addition, each portrait will include maps showing the buildings’ original locations, architectural fragments from the buildings, interpretive text and an artist’s statement. Harris, a St. Louis native, taught art at Rosary High School for 36 years. The exhibit is curated by her sister, NiNi Harris, a local historian and the author of nine books on St. Louis history, architecture, city neighborhoods and the Gateway Arch. While the exhibit is on display at the Courthouse, Harris will discuss and demonstrate her technique during several scheduled appearances. historical play based on the exhibit during its run. NiNi offers that the exhibit will “expand in a different media the riverfront story and bring to life the fact that there was once a wonderful collection of buildings there ranging from simple to ornate and from modest to grandiose. We have been so very fortunate in St. Louis, for we tore down a great collection of buildings, but got a great sculpture (the Gateway Arch) and landscape in their place. This is very rare in history and is one of the points I hope the exhibit will demonstrate.” This exhibit is possible due to the generous support from Jefferson National Parks Association.

CUTC to present “Beauty and the Beast” The stage musical adaptation of one of Disney’s greatest full-length animated features, “Beauty and the Beast,” will open at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 6, and continue with five more performances through Sunday, May 9, all on the mainstage in SIUE’s Katherine Dunham Hall. The lovely music of Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, with book by Linda Woolverton based on the Disney animated film, comes to life on the stage in this hit Broadway musical adaptation. The Arts Artistic adventures Kemper Museum puts photography in focus Over the last several years, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum has built an exceptional collection of works by an international array of contemporary artists who both examine and expand the parameters of traditional photography. For these artists, photography is not a single, rigidly defined discipline or practice, but a versatile medium that can be filtered through a wide range of artistic processes and used to address a wide range of aesthetic questions and concerns. From May 7 through July 26, the Kemper Art Museum will showcase this collection in Focus on Photography: Recent Acquisitions. Organized by assistant curator Karen Butler, the exhibition will feature more than 100 pieces by more than 20 artists, ranging from historical figures who helped define early photographic standards to contemporary photographers working within what art historian George Baker has termed “photography’s expanded field.” Taken together, these artists offer a lens through which to address the question: What is photography today? The earliest works on view a re ro o t e d i n p h o t o g r a p h y ’ s documentary tradition. Edward Curtis sought to record and preserve the culture of disappearing Native American tribes, yet he also was deeply influenced by aesthetic conventions — the portrait, the pastoral landscape — borrowed from traditions of painting. This dichotomy reflects the complex n a t u re o f e a r l y 2 0 t h - c e n t u r y photography, which frequently negotiated between scientific instrument and artistic endeavor. Conversely, in artfully staged portraits such as Picasso, Cannes (1955), Lucien Clergue consciously attempted to supplant the painted portrait with a photographic image capturing the individual’s psychological essence. The work of artists such as Andy Warhol and Louise Lawler would further transform our understanding of the photographic image, radically undermining it’s apparent promise of objective knowledge or truth. Warhol, who lived life both through and for the camera, is represented by a large group of working Polaroids and black-and-white snapshots, the latter of which portray personal and public activities but, paradoxically, reveal very little about Warhol himself. Lawler, meanwhile, is represented by Not Yet Titled (2004/05), a recent example from a long line of photographs that investigate the life of artworks after they leave the studio and enter the public domain. These figures set the stage for a vast array of artists whose varied

forms of critical engagement define the state of photography today. In Ecrivain public / Public letter writer, Rafaèle Decarpigny (2007), Sophie Calle uses photography to explore questions of subjectivity and identity, creating an unconventional portrait out of the response of one woman, a professional letter writer, to an upsetting email that Calle received from a boyfriend. Questions of identity also inform Christian Jankowski’s series Poster Sale (2005), which depicts 40 Washington University students posing with images they had selected to decorate their dorm rooms, thus allowing viewers to glimpse the ways popular culture contributes to the construction of individuality. In Untitled (Pollock/Titian) #4 (1984/2005), Andrea Fraser deploys photography as a form of institutional critique by juxtaposing and then re-photographing slides of well-known paintings by two renowned male artists. Wolfgang Tillmans, in Wald (Briol II) (2008), addresses the issue of photographic representation head-on by photocopying his own photograph, of a man walking through a forest, rendering it dark, flat and blurry. Tillmans then scanned, enlarged and printed the photocopy again, this time as a singular image, thus placing it somewhere between a photograph and a unique artwork. Rounding out the exhibition will be recently acquired works by Howard French, David Goldblatt, Doug Hall, Ulrike Kuschel, Sharon L o c k h a r t , A l e n M a c We e n e y, Abelardo Morell, Simon Nieweg, George Rousse, Georgina Starr and John Stezaker. Dining Delights Martha helps keep Emeril on the right path By MARY FOSTER Associated Press Writer

a core group of people who are very loyal to him and put them in his restaurants.” There was no problem giving up the rights to the 15 cookbooks he has written, Lagasse said. Or products, like “Emeril’s Kicked Up Seafood,” his essences and rubs, sauces and salsas, his cookware, cutlery, tableware and textiles, apparel and gifts. “I don’t have any regrets,” he said. “The experience with Martha Stewart has been delightful. She’s a smart lady and a hard worker. My little bit just fits into a corner of her empire, and I’m happy to be there.” Lagasse’s troubles started when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, flooding 80 percent of the city and forcing a complete evacuation of residents. The storm damaged his three restaurants — Emeril’s, NOLA and Delmonico’s — and destroyed Lagasse’s Mississippi home. “What a tough time,” said L i n q u e s t . “ We s p e n t e a s i l y a million dollars getting the restaurants back in shape. And overnight a third of the revenue of the company disappeared.” T h e re w e re a l s o u n i n s u re d losses like $650,000 in wine at Delmonico’s and $550,000 in wine at NOLA. And even though Emeril’s was reopened in early October 2005, and NOLA a few weeks later, Delmonico’s was closed for over a year because of damage to the building. In the deal with Stewart, Lagasse retained his 13 restaurants that dot the landscape from Las Vegas to Pennsylvania, each an obvious labor of love. Sitting in his namesake restaurant in New Orleans, in his crisp, white chef ’s coat with

“Emeril’s” stitched in green over his heart, his winning smile quick, the conversation ebullient. It’s hard to imagine that Lagasse feels more comfortable in any other setting. He’s not sure if he wants more restaurants in his chain, however. He says he turns down 40 to 50 proposals a year. “I’m finally off the roller coaster ride I’ve been on for 35 years,” said Lagasse, who has two grown daughters, a 7-yearold-son and 5-year-old daughter. “ I f y o u ’ re n o t c a re f u l , y o u can put yourself in a situation where you have no time for your family,” he said. Not that Lagasse’s schedule will be light. He visits each of his restaurants regularly, and when he’s in one, he’s in the kitchen cooking. “Emeril has this magnetic type personality, he’s easy to talk to and he talks easily,” said Ella Brennan, the grande dame of the Brennan family restaurants, who hired Lagasse in the ’70s at New Orleans’ famous Commander ’s Palace. “It’s part of what makes his restaurants so welcoming, and it’s certainly what makes him such a popular television personality.” Lagasse’s new Sirius radio show, “Cooking with Emeril,” takes calls and features various guests. He did it from Emeril’s in New Orleans as part of the 20th anniversary, interviewing people who helped him start h i s e m p i re , a n d p e o p l e f ro m his foundation, which benefits everything from summer camps for kids to cooking training. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Nearly 20 years after Emeril Lagasse begged, borrowed and scrounged every penny he could to open his own restaurant, the celebrity chef worried it was all slipping away. Lagasse’s 17-year run on t h e F o o d N e t w o r k w a s o v e r. Hurricane Katrina had caused at least a $1 million loss to his three New Orleans-based restaurants and cut his profits by a third. B u t j u s t w h e n t h i n g s w e re looking bleakest — Bam! — Martha Stewart kicked it up a notch and the 50-year-old Lagasse is back. “She showed up at a tough time when I thought the whole ship might be going down,” Lagasse said during a recent interview. “Basically, what I have now is a business partner.” He also has a string of s u c c e s s f u l re s t a u r a n t s , a n e w television program, regular appearances in Stewart’s magazines, and has a 10cookbook publishing deal (the third of which will be released in June).
