Missouri History Museum to exhibit Nazi Propaganda
and pursue their racial policies and expansionist war efforts, a much more nuanced picture had to be painted—one that would appeal to broad swaths of the population, not just a fanatical extreme. Featuring rarely seen artifacts, State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda draws visitors into a rich multimedia environment vividly illustrating the insidious allure of much of Nazi propaganda. The exhibition opens at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park on April 11, 2015 and will be on display through September 7, 2015. “Adolf Hitler was an avid student of propaganda and borrowed techniques from the Allies in World War I, his Socialist and Communist rivals, t h e I t a l i a n F a s c i s t P a r t y, a s well as modern advertising,” says exhibition curator Steven Luckert. “Drawing upon these models, he successfully m a r k e t e d t h e N a z i P a r t y, i t s i d e o l o g y, a n d h i m s e l f t o t h e German people.” T h e e x h i b i t i o n re v e a l s h o w shortly after World War I, the Nazi Party began to transform itself from an obscure, extremist group into the largest political party in democratic Germany. Hitler early on recognized how propaganda, combined with the use of terror, could help his radical party gain mass support and votes. He personally adapted the ancient symbol of the swastika and the emotive colors of red, black, and white to create the movement’s flag. In doing so, Hitler established a potent visual identity that has branded the Nazi Party ever since. A f t e r s e i z i n g p o w e r, t h e Nazi Party took over all communications in Germany. People People planner “The Munsters” are coming to Greenville Car Show
It may look like Halloween in June as two of the stars of the classic television show “The Munsters” will be the celebrity guests at this year’s Greenville (Illinois) Graffiti Car Show. Butch Patrick (Eddie Munster) and Pat Priest (Marilyn Munster) will meet fans and sign autographs on Saturday, June 20 during the show. Replicas of the Munster Koach and Dragula, prominently featured on the program, will also be making an appearance. Patrick was a popular child star who also made guest appearances on many shows of the 1960s including “Bonanza”, “Gunsmoke” and “Rawhide”. Patrick’s work as Eddie, the son of Herman and Lily Munster, made him a TV icon. In the early 1970s Patrick was the star of “Lidsville”, a quirky Saturday morning show produced by Sid and Marty Krofft. Priest took over the role of Marilyn Munster in the show’s 16th episode. Perhaps her best known role outside of “The Munsters” came in 1967 when she co-starred with Elvis Presley in the movie “Easy Come, Easy Go”. She was also a guest on other iconic programs like “Perry Mason”, “Bewitched” and “Mission Impossible”. Car show organizers are excited to have the Munster Koach and Drag-ula on display that day. The original vehicles were the creation of George Barris, a legendary designer and maker of cars used in television shows and movies. The Munster Koach, Herman Munster’s preferred method of transportation, was created from three Model T bodies. The Drag-ula, built by Grandpa Munster and used by Herman in a classic episode of the show, was made using a real fiberglass coffin. This is a rare opportunity to see television history in person. Butch Patrick, Pat Priest, the Munster Koach, and the Drag-ula may also be seen at the Munster’s Ball, a special event to be held on Friday, June 19 at the American Farm Heritage Museum in Greenville. This ticketed event includes a question and answer session with the stars, photo opportunities, food, and other fun. Ticket information about the Munster’s Ball may be obtained by calling the Greenville Chamber of Commerce at (618) 664-9272. The Greenville Graffiti Car Show on Saturday, June 20 is open to 1990 and older cars and trucks for judging. Vehicles may also be brought for display. For the first time, motorcycles may be brought for display only. Last year’s event attracted nearly 190 cars and trucks to downtown Greenville, Illinois.

Louisiana artists, including Dr. John, Rebirth Brass Band, Bonerama, Chubby Carrier and Big Sam’s Funky Nation. July 17 – Old Capitol Square Dance Club (County, Rock n Roll, Soul, Blues) Vandalia, IL Old Capital Square Dance Club plays a combination of mostly their original songs and occasionally a cover of artists such as Hank Williams, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, The Band, George Jones, Merle Haggard, The Byrds and more! Some evenings include an additional fiddle and lap steel player as well as their beloved friend and pianist, Tim Sullivan. With seven players combined, Old Capital Square Dance Club becomes The Old Capital Orchestra. August 7 – Bones Jugs N Harmony (Eclectic) Urbana, IL Bonesjugs.com It’s not world music nor folk music. It’s not rock, blues, bluegrass, country nor jazz. It’s not anything in particular. Bones, jug, xylophone, kazoos, steel pan, resonator guitar, banjo, double bass, drums, all sorts of noise makers. These are just some of the instruments Bones Jugs N Harmony use to conjure up their eclectic acoustic sound. It’s Frank Zappa meets Spike Jones, it’s Looney Tunes meets Nintendo. It’s seriously silly. It’s a party. It’s for dancing, for listening, for enjoying. It’s for adults. It’s for kids. It’s for everyone. Bones Jugs N Harmony believes music should bring joy, and they work hard to put this in every song. From the first note till the end they strive to send their joyful sound into the ears where it will quickly saturate the entire body. It’s a frenzy of frivolity, a marvel of merriment. In short, it’s just loads of fun. This concert series is created not only for the community but by the community working together. The Alton Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau has announced the following events. ALT: The Dixie Swim Club (Comedy) May 7 – 10 & 14 - 17, 2015 Starts at 7:30pm Alton Little Theater 2450 N. Henry Street Alton, IL 62002 Five Southern women, whose friendships began many years ago on their college swim team, set aside a long weekend every August to recharge those relationships. Free from husbands, kids and jobs, they meet at the same beach cottage on North Carolina’s Outer Banks to catch up, laugh and meddle in each other’s lives. The Dixie Swim Club focuses on four of those weekends and spans a period of thirty-three years. As their lives unfold and the years pass, these women increasingly rely on one another, through advice and raucous repartee, to get through the challenges (men, sex, marriage, parenting, divorce, aging) that life flings at them. And when fate throws a wrench into one of their lives in the second act, these friends, proving the enduring power of “teamwork,” rally ‘round their own with the strength and love that takes this comedy in a poignant and surprising direction. The Dixie Swim Club is the story of these five unforgettable women—a hilarious and touching comedy about friendships that last forever… Admission Adults: $15 Students: $8 Call for group discounts Community Hope Center 5K Walk/Run Saturday, May 9, 2015 8:00am to 12:00pm Bethalto Central Park 213 N. Not seen at The Muny since 2008, Lerner and Loewe’s classic My Fair Lady tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins, a phoneticist, so that she may pass as a lady. Based on George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, My Fair Lady features the classic songs of Lerner and Loewe, such as “On The Street Where You Live,” “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “I’ve Grown Accustomed To Her Face,” and “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly?” Winner of the 2003 Tony ® Award for Best Musical, Hairspray returns to the Muny for 9 performances. Come join Tracy Turnblad and “the nicest kids in town” as they reach for their dream of performing on a TV dance show in 1960s Baltimore - and work to integrate the show in the process. Based on the 1988 John Waters Film of the same name, Hairspray features such awardwinning songs as “Good Morning Baltimore,” “It Takes Two,” “I Know Where I’ve Been,” and “You Can’t Stop The Beat!” Making its Muny and Mid-west premiere, Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn dances its way onto the Muny stage, telling the story of a Connecticut farmhouse transformed into a jubilant nightspot and hotel that is only open on holidays! Based on the 1942 film starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire, Holiday Inn features such Irving Berlin classics as “Steppin’ Out With My Baby,” “Shakin’ The Blues Away,” “Be Careful, It’s My Heart,” and more! Making its Muny premiere, Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story is a musical based on the life and career of early rock and roller Buddy Holly. Opening in 1989, the musical initially ran in London’s West End for over 12 years, and premiered on Broadway in 1990. One of the first so-called “jukebox musicals,” this show features the songs of Buddy Holly and other early rockers, including classics like “That’ll Be The Day,” “Johnny B. Goode,” “Peggy Sue,” and “Why Do Fools Fall in Love?” Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Into The Woods makes its Muny premiere. Winner of 5 Tony ® Awards, this musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales and follows them to explore the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. Journey with the Baker and his wife, as they work to lift the Witch’s spell with the help of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and the bean stalk), Rapunzel, Cinderella and others. Returning to the Muny stage for 10 performances, Disney’s Beauty and The Beast tells the magical story of a prince who is transformed into
10
a hideous beast as punishment for his cruel and selfish ways, and an adventurous young woman named Belle whom he imprisons in his enchanted castle. In order to become human again, the Beast must earn Belle’s love before it’s too late. Based on the 1991 film of the same name, Beauty and The Beast features the music of the award-winning composing team of Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice. The Pulitzer Prize winning Oklahoma! returns to Forest Park in grand style. The first Muny production since 2007, this Rodgers and Hammerstein classic features an unforgettable story and lush score including such classic hits as “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” “The Surrey With the Fringe on Top,” “People Will Say We’re in Love,” and of course, “Oklahoma!” To get preferred seating with new season tickets, purchase a Muny Season Ticket Gift Card, available now. This classic musical comedy from Broadway’s golden age features such meltingly romantic Cole Porter melodies as “I Get A Kick Out Of You,” “It’s De-Lovely,” “Easy To Love,” “You’re The Top,” and “Anything Goes.” Julie Cardia returns to STAGES, previously appearing in STAGES’ 2011 production of The Secret Garden and the 2009 production of Guys and Dolls. Other credits include the National Tours of Annie, The Wizard of Oz, and The Music Man: In Concert led by Shirley Jones. Also returning to STAGES is Jeffrey Alan Pew, who was last seen in STAGES’ 2011 production of A Chorus Line. Broadway and National Tour credits include Cinderella, First Wives Club, Billy Elliot, and The Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Making his STAGES debut, Bob Amaral has performed on Broadway in Guys and Dolls, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, and The Lion King. Television guest appearances include “N.Y.P.D. Blue,” “Son of the Beach,” and “Any Day Now.” Also starring is Broadway Actress Heidi Giberson as Hope Harcourt. Giberson has performed on Broadway in Cinderella and
as Dave Bukatinsky, Broadway Actor James Ludwig as Harold Nichols, Broadway Actor Milton Craig Nealy as Noah “Horse” Simmons, New York Actor Chuck Ragsdale as Malcolm MacGregor, and New York Actor Adam Shonkwiler as Ethan Girard. A tentime Tony Award-nominee, The Full Monty recounts a moving story of six unemployed steelworkers who come up with a bold and unconventional way to make some muchneeded cash, after witnessing their wives go wild for a group of male strippers. In the process, they discover renewed self-esteem and the importance of family, friendship, and the very human desire to live life to the fullest. With razor-sharp humor and toe-tapping pizzazz, The Full Monty is musical theatre at its most heart-warming. Will Ray makes his STAGES debut as Jerry Lukowski. New York credits include Meet Me in St. Louis and Balls…The Musical. Ray also has appeared in the First National Tour of Little House on the Prairie: The Musical and as a featured soloist with orchestras around the world including the Cincinnati Pops, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. Returning to STAGES, Todd A. Horman most recently was seen in the Broadway production of Sting’s The Last Ship and the First National Tour of Sister Act. Horman also has appeared on Broadway in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Urinetown. Other regional credits include The Full Monty, 1776, and Guys and Dolls. Making his STAGES debut, James Ludwig has appeared on Broadway in the original cast of Spamalot and the First National Tour of 101 Dalmatians. Other credits include

the Off-Broadway productions of Two Point Oh, Blue Man Group, and John & Jen as well as a regional production of The Full Monty. Making his STAGES debut, Milton Craig Nealy has appeared on Broadway in Motown: The Musical, Caroline, or Change, Miss Saigon, and Five Guys Named Moe. Nealy also has performed at The Muny in Jesus Christ Superstar and recently returned in 2012 for Dreamgirls. Ragsdale also appeared in the original company for the National Tour of The 101 Dalmatians. Off-Broadway credits include Silence!, How to Save the World…, and The Ark. Adam Shonkwiler returns to STAGES, where he was last seen as Huck in STAGES’ 2010 production of Big River. Shonkwiler has appeared in the National Tour of Whistle Down the Wind and in regional productions of Red, Camelot, and Next Fall. Also starring is St. Louis Actress Zoe Vonder Haar as Jeanette Burmeister. A familiar face with St. Louis audiences, Vonder Haar has performed in over sixty productions at STAGES including Hello, Dolly!, Gypsy, Mame, and most recently starred as Louise in Always… Patsy Cline. Other credits include the First International Touring Company of A Chorus Line and numerous productions at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis and The Muny. Rounding out the cast in alphabetical order are Leah Berry (Pam Lukowsi), Shawn Bowers (Jackson/Police Sergeant/Repo Man), Julie Cardia (Vicki Nichols), Kari Ely (Marge/Molly MacGregor), Laura Ernst (Delores/Power Jogger), Morgan Amiel Faulkner (Estelle Genovese/Dance Instructor), John Flack (Gary Bonasorte/Tony Giordano), Cody Heuer (Marty/Repo Man), Cole Hoefferle (Nathan Lukowski), Steve Isom (Reg Willoughby), Ian Paget (Buddy "Keno" Walsh), Whit Reichert (Power Jogger/Minister), David Sajewich (2nd Stripper/Teddy Slaughter), Angela Sapolis (Susan Hershey), April Strelinger (Joanie Lish), and Lindsie VanWinkle (Georgie Bukatinsky). Religion Religion briefs Police: Texas woman helped starve boy to rid him of 'demon'
DALLAS (AP) — Authorities say a woman who operated a church in her Dallas-area home helped starve a 2-year-old boy to rid him of a "demon," then held a ceremony to try to revive him. Balch Springs police said Tuesday that Araceli Meza encouraged the boy's parents to feed him only water for 25 days, then tried to "resurrect" him during a ceremony. Investigators believe the boy died but that his parents returned home to Mexico for the burial. Lt. Mark Mare says the 49-year-old Meza was charged Monday with injury to a child causing serious bodily injury by omission. She's being held on $100,000 bond and has no listed attorney. Police say they received a tip about a March 22 ceremony at the home to revive the American-born child.

Lawmaker looks to spur Indiana gay rights protections debate
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A Democratic lawmaker is looking to force Republicans to vote on whether to extend protections for gays, lesbians and others under Indiana's nondiscrimination laws less than two weeks after the backlash over the religious objections law. The proposal calls for adding sexual orientation and gender identity to the non-discrimination sections of numerous state laws, including the Indiana civil rights law covering education, employment and housing. Democratic Rep. Ed DeLaney of Indianapolis says his proposal would get Indiana past the uproar over whether the religious objections law could have allowed discrimination. The Indiana House faces a Tuesday deadline to act on two bills that DeLaney wants non-discrimination language added to.

CHICAGO (AP) — Top elected officials, clergy members and Chicago-area Catholics have attended the funeral for Cardinal Francis George, who was remembered as a vigorous defender of Roman Catholic orthodoxy. About 1,200 people attended Thursday's funeral Mass at Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral, which followed three days of visitation. Seattle Archbishop J. Peter Sartain said Cardinal George "was so utterly a Christian that no circumstance seemed inappropriate for him to give witness to Christ." George died last Friday at age 78 after a long fight with cancer. He retired last fall and was replaced by Archbishop Blase Cupich.

"True Story"
Michael Finkel's journalism career, torpedoed by a partly fabricated story, had just bottomed out when a phone call came asking why a man accused of murdering his wife and three children in Oregon was identifying himself "Mike Finkel, New York Times." That was the identification Christian Longo gave the FBI when they arrested him in Mexico in February 2002 for the four Oregon homicides. The timing was, in a strange way, fortuitous for Finkel. His string of New York Times Magazine covers had come to an abrupt and scandalous end when it was discovered that his piece on Ivory Coast cocoa plantations invented a composite character. Finkel, nursing his wounds back at his Montana home, wrote to Longo in prison while he awaited trial: "At the same time that you were using my name, I lost my own." Their resulting meetings quickly led to a 2005 book, partly about Longo, partly a mea culpa for Finkel. Now it's a movie starring Jonah Hill as Finkel and James Franco as Longo. It's not the bromance you may have been expecting between the two, but it's a bromance nevertheless. "True Story" has its issues — neither Franco nor Hill, talented as they are, are suited to their parts — but its biggest problem is at its heart. In grafting Finkel's selfserving story of career revival onto a grisly tragedy, "True Story," though handsomely made, is entirely misguided. When the final credits dramatically inform us that Finkel never again wrote for the Times, the movie has laughably overestimated our sympathies for the disgraced reporter's resume. "True Story," the feature debut of the British theater director Rupert Goold, was clearly conceived as a way to play with truth versus fiction in storytelling (a favorite topic of Franco's). The film is its own dramatization of real events, of course, too. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language and some disturbing material." RUNNING TIME: 99 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.
"Ex Machina"
Cinema has always been fascinated by androids. From "Metropolis" to "Blade Runner," the juxtaposition of humans next to their artificial form has provided endless hours of stories that can be as exhilarating as they are poignant. Tough moral questions about consciousness and humanity go down easier when hidden under the glossy sheen of genre, after all. With so many now-classics preceding it, "Ex Machina" might seem like just the latest flavor in the android movie shop. And yet, without necessarily expanding on this well-trod territory or innovating contemporary science-fiction, by going deep on a simple construct, "Ex Machina" establishes itself as a unique and deeply unsettling psychological thriller that's both necessary and unforgettable. The construct in question: How good is this android? Writer-director Alex Garland in his feature debut tells the story with basically only three characters: Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), the sharp programmer whose life is upended to spend a few days in a remote location with his company's billionaire CEO and brilliant recluse, Nathan (Oscar Isaac); and Nathan's creation, Ava (Alicia Vikander). Caleb thinks he's won a prize and a retreat with a genius. It's only when he arrives that Nathan tells him his real purpose is to advise Nathan on whether or not Ava passes the human or machine test. Nathan's home embodies the modern design ideal of organic architecture and he and Caleb discuss Ava as Schubert and Bach play faintly in the background. Big, fascinating ideas fly around at rapid speed, but "should" does not seem to be in their vocabulary. Garland builds a subtle tension by making everything

slightly off, from the concrete, bunker-like bedrooms, to the occasional power-outages and the militaristic security methods. Caleb is never at ease and, as the audience's window into this strange world, neither are we. "Child 44"
The best-selling novel "Child 44" by Tom Rob Smith runs well over 400 pages, and that's perhaps the first hint as to why the movie based on it seems to veer in 40 different directions. It's a political movie. It's a war film. It's a crime thriller. And suddenly, late in the proceedings, it becomes an action movie. At 137 minutes, the movie's also a good half-hour too long. It's as if director Daniel Espinosa and screenwriter Richard Price felt the need to include something from each of the book's pages. Ultimately, what we have left is a bloated, grim, underwhelming affair, which is unfortunate — because the movie starts out with a lot going for it. Besides the popular source material and the compelling backdrop of fear and repression in the Soviet Union under Josef Stalin, the film has an excellent cast starring the always interesting Tom Hardy as a self-questioning military hero, intelligence operative and amateur gumshoe. (It's worth noting that one opinion in Russia has already been registered: that of the government, which on Wednesday scrapped the film's release there, saying it distorts history and casts the Soviet Union as "a sort of Mordor, populated by physically and morally defective sub-humans, a bloodbath on screen involving Orcs and vampires.") After a sad prologue from his boyhood, we meet Leo Demidov (Hardy, sporting a very thick Russian accent) in World War II Berlin, where he becomes an accidental hero by virtue of being the one to raise his country's flag above the Reichstag. We then jump to 1953; Demidov is an officer in the MGB, the Soviet intelligence agency (and KGB forerunner), tasked with tracking down traitors. This is a world where, as one character notes, it can be "just our turn" to be denounced and arrested as a spy. And indeed, things turn difficult for Demidov when his MGB boss, Kuzman (Vincent Cassel) orders him to investigate his own wife, Raisa (a sensitive Noomi Rapace). RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for violence, some disturbing images, language and a scene of sexuality." RUNNING TIME: 137 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.
"Avengers: Age of Ultron"
It will surely stand as one of the most peculiar and possibly ironic entries in a director's filmography that in between Joss Whedon's two "Avengers" films there reads "Much Ado About Nothing": a low-budget, black-and-white Shakespeare adaption sandwiched between two of the most gargantuan blockbusters ever made. In "Avengers: Age of Ultron," Whedon (and Marvel's) sequel to the third highest grossing film of all-time, there is definitely aplenty ado-ing. Too much, certainly, but then again, we come to the Avengers for their clown-car excess of superheros, their colorful coterie of capes. What binds Whedon's spectacles with his Shakespeare are

the quips, which sail in iambic pentameter in one and zigzag between explosions in the others. The original 2012 "Avengers" (which featured the rarest of superhero movie insults: "mewling quim") should have had more of them, and there's even less room in the massive — and massively overstuffed — "Age of Ultron" for Whedon's dry, self-referential wit. As a sequel, "Age of Ultron" could have amped up the brio. But it instead pushes further into emotionality and complexity, adding up to a full but not particularly satisfying meal of franchise building, and leaving only a bread-crumb trail of Whedon's banter to follow through the rubble. The action starts predictably with the Avengers, now assembled, assaulting a remote HYDRA base in the fictional, vaguely Eastern European snowy republic of Sokovia. They are a weaving force: Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth's Thor, Mark Ruffalo's Hulk, Chris Evans's Captain America, Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow and Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye. What "Age of Ultron" has going for it, as such references prove, is a sense of fun, a lack of self-seriousness that persists even when things start going kablooey — something not always evident in other faux-serious superhero films. (I'm looking at you, "Man of Steel.") RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "intense sequences of sci-fi action, violence and destruction." RUNNING TIME: 141 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
"The Age of Adaline"
Is it possible for a movie to be at once ludicrously silly and genuinely moving? That's the strange question you might find yourself asking while watching "The Age of Adaline," a romantic fantasy with surprising heft that will likely have you scoffing at one moment, then furtively wiping away a tear the next. It'll also have you marveling at the emotional resonance that a seasoned pro like Harrison Ford, Ellen Burstyn or Kathy Baker can bring to a supporting turn. Ford, in particular, takes what could have been a solid but unspectacular role and turns it into the film's highlight — and perhaps one of his better performances in years. It's no accident that the poignancy of Ford's performance comes from his evocation, as a middle-aged father, of both the pleasure and pain that aging brings — both the wellearned wisdom and the inevitable regrets. The entire film, directed by Lee Toland Krieger, is about age and our common assumption that younger is always better. Not so fast, the film is telling us. Smooth, unwrinkled skin and ungraying hair isn't everything. Of course, when that skin and hair belongs to gorgeous Blake Lively, it's not easy to have much sympathy at first. Lively grows on you gradually in the role of Adaline, a young woman with a big secret. We first meet her as she's arranging for a new identity, fake passports and all. Back in her apartment, we see hints that she's not all she seems: fraying, sepia photographs, or a dusty old manual typewriter. Turns out that Adaline, though we're in the present time, was born in 1908. She married, had a daughter, lost her husband and then, at 29, almost drowned when a car accident landed her in frigid waters. Somehow, a scientific process involving a bolt of lightning both revived her heart and, yes, stopped her from aging. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America "for a suggestive comment." RUNNING TIME: 112 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

Demidov knows from seeing the body — naked, and sliced up — that the boy was murdered, but he's ordered to tell the family it was a train accident. Why? Because in Stalin's worker's paradise, murder doesn't exist; it only exists in decadent capitalist societies. Demidov doesn't have time to investigate further in Moscow because, having refused to denounce his own wife, he's roused from bed and exiled along with Raisa to a far-off outpost, where he's given a filthy room and an unglamorous job under a mercurial boss (Gary Oldman, welcome but underused).
"Avengers" has enough for fans, everyone else By MOIRA Macdonald Seattle Times Tw o k i n d s o f v i e w e r s w i l l be headed to Joss Whedon’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron”: the comic fans, watching closely to see how precisely the movie hones to Marvel-set characters and conventions, and the rest of us, who just want to see some well-crafted mayhem and some funny banter. Speaking as a member of the latter group (don’t ask me to tell you what “vibranium” is), I can tell you that the film delivers; it’s big, it’s often dazzling and it’s good fun. If it at times feels a bit familiar ... well, the original “Avengers” movie was pretty terrific, and there’s only so much new that Whedon can bring this time to the saving-the-world-in-
high-tech-outfits thing. Some fresh faces, of course, turn up. The villain Ultron, who’s naturally out to destroy the world, is a tall, spindly and thoroughly evil robot, introduced intriguingly by a trippy waterfall/kaleidoscope of tiny squares and screens. He’s voiced in oiled-metal tones by James Spader, as all evil robots should be. We meet a pair of new Avengers in the form of twin siblings Pietro (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) Maximoff, aka Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. In the cogent words of Agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), “he’s fast and she’s weird,” and I quite enjoyed the way Pietro rather precisely cracks his neck before entering battle, and how Wanda employs her deliciously evil grin. And we learn that one of
our Avengers has a rather idyllic home life, with a wife (Linda Cardellini) who gets to deliver perhaps the greatest Understanding Spouse line of dialogue ever: “You know I support your avenging.” But as before, the greatest fun is in watching the original Avengers, all fine actors who’ve made the characters their own. Robert Downey Jr. continues to play Tony Stark/Iron Man like improvisational jazz; his little, just-for-himself “yea!” upon finding a secret door is priceless. Chris Hemsworth’s fish-out-of-water Thor continues to occupy his own world, except for a throwaway moment near the end where he notes, perplexedly, “I’m running out of things to say!” And romance blooms, sort of, between Mark Ruffalo’s melancholy
Bruce Banner/Hulk and Scarlett Johansson’s cool Natasha/Black Widow. This relationship seems the very definition of a bad idea, but it’s irresistible, particularly when the two flirt to the strains of a big band playing “I Can’t Get Started.” (Hey, we non-comic-book fans have our own weaknesses, er, Kryptonite.) E l s e w h e re , w o r l d s c o l l i d e , buildings collapse and havoc is wreaked — all in impressive if slightly video-gamey 3D. (Odd how 3D can make a movie on a giant screen seem both larger and smaller, simultaneously. It’s also being released in 2D, and I suspect would still be quite satisfying.) “Age of Ultron” is as good as it needs to be, and often better, and it ends (stick around through the first phase of the final credits) with a hint of

I’m hoping, though, for a bit more of a jolt next time with “Avengers: Infinity War,” a two-parter due in 2018 and 2019, rather than familiar pleasures. ••• Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Aaron TaylorJohnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Cobie Smulders, Stellan Skarsgard, James Spader, Samuel L. Bill Roseberry/The Edge
Above, the Kurt's BLT at Richard's on Main, a BLT with a fried egg added to it accompanied by a side of cheese fries. The sign on the street in Peoria.
Richard's on Main in Peoria By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge Annually I take a trip with friends to Peoria to check out the Class 3A and 4A IHSA boys' basketball state tournament. While the basketball is the priority of the trip, there are also ample opportunities to check out the local eats, which has become equally important. Always looking for that hidden gem in Peoria, this year we came across Richard's on Main. Located at 311 Main St., Richard's is in downtown Peoria in the basement of the historic Apollo Theater which was constructed in 1914. Richard's was established in 2001. A sign in front of the Apollo directs you down some stairs to Richard's and once inside you realize how big it is. There is a large bar with plenty of booths around it for patrons to eat and then there is another room with even more table seating. It's a huge place with ample space for big dinner parties, which was good seeing that there were six of us on our visit. The menu is extensive, with selections varying from pizza, to burgers and sandwiches to steaks, a little bit for everybody. There weren't too many quirky options, it was fairly traditional, but I did find one sandwich that stood out to me so of course that's what I ordered. My selection was named the Kurt's BLT. It was simply your classic bacon, lettuce and tomato served on Texas toast, but with a unique twist. At Richard's they do something I've never seen before, they add — wait for it — a fried egg to the Kurt's BLT. This little addition is a game changer for the BLT, what a great spike in taste for a classic sandwich. It was outstanding.

To accompany my BLT I went with an order of cheese fries. I chose the cheese fries because Richard's isn't shy on bragging about them. As a matter of fact they are listed on the menu as “The BEST Cheese Fries.” I think Richard's is taking quite a leap to say that. They were good, but weren't spectacular and not distinguishable from other cheese fries I've eaten before. The skin is left on the fries there and they boast of the “zesty” cheese sauce. I frankly didn't think there was much zesty about the cheese sauce. I couldn't taste a kick of any kind. As for the rest of my group, my

buddy Andy's order stood out above the rest. Andy decided to check out the pizza selections, going with the white garlic, which was comprised of a garlic butter sauce, sausage and onions. The dough is made in-house at Richard's, too. It looked delicious and Andy raved about the taste. But what had me most fired up about Richard's was the dessert menu. I'm not normally much of a dessert guy, but from time to time something catches my eye and Richard's found the key to my gut in the blonde brownie. Andy had to

order one also. This tantalizing treat includes a piping hot chocolate chip blonde brownie topped with a couple s c o o p s o f v a n i l l a i c e c re a m , whipped cream and chocolate sauce. Need I say more? I had to wipe the drool off my keyboard just writing about it. It was fantastic. Perusing the rest of the menu, there were some other standout selections in my opinion. On the appetizer menu there were mini corn dogs, fried green beans and fried cauliflower to name a few. T h e re a re s o m e c o o l s a l a d
choices, like the coconut shrimp salad, the grilled salmon salad, the grilled tuna salad and the grilled steak salad among others. All are garden salads served with the before mentioned meats. The steak salad has ribeye steak in it. The smothered beef sandwich sounded good to me, with deli sliced roast beef, topped with sauteed onions and mushrooms, smothered in mozzarella cheese and served on a hoagie. I was really intrigued by the reuben pizza with 1,000 island dressing, sauerkraut and corned beef on a pizza. It sounds weird, but delicious. There was also the taco pizza with seasoned beef, onion, tomato, lettuce, cheddar cheese and tortilla chips that sounded interesting. There are also filet mignon and ribeye steak selections, grilled tuna and salmon steaks, grilled chicken breasts and pork chops on the menu. Richard's offers a horseshoe also, with your choice of meat. It even offers corned beef, pork tenderloin and steak as choices — oh and best of all — bacon. You can take the Clydesdale Challenge if you dare with a half pound each of hamburger, ham, turkey and chicken strips served on seven slices of Texas toast with two pounds of fries and two pounds of cheese sauce. Eat it in 45 minutes and get a free T-shirt and your picture on the wall of fame. Check out Richard's on the web at www.richardsonmain.com to see the rest of what it has to offer. Overall, Richard's was a nice place to eat, not too expensive. For my BLT, fries and dessert I paid around $15. It passes the test as a place to visit when you gotta eat.
Dining Delights The Ege's own Bill Roseberry, famous for his You Gotta' Eat restaurant reviews, has put together his thoughts on a number of local eateries. Enjoy. Unkle Munkey's Coin Club 1027 Century Dr. Edwardsville This is the place to be, great food, great beer selections and an outstanding group of old school video games to help you revisit your youth. Check out the chicken wings, they are some of the best around, and the buffalo chicken pizza is the bomb with slice of celery on top and drizzled with ranch dressing. Don't miss out on playing an original pong arcade game while you're there either. Gulf Shores Restaurant & Grill 215 Harvard Dr. Edwardsville Be prepared to wait when you visit this new hot spot in Edwardsville, but it's worth it. Make sure to check out the gator bites, they are fantastic. It's alligator meat fried in a corn meal breading. The catfish fillets are fried in the same corn meal breading and equally as good. There are also gator tacos and don't miss “Crabby Monday's Crab Leg Special.” A little pricey though. Chubby's Warehouse Bar & Grille 1022 E. Broadway Alton Cheap and delicious. The burgers are fantastic here and extremely affordable. They also have a good buffalo chicken sandwich and good tacos. Maybe the best thing they offer is their sweet corn nuggets, you can't go wrong with them. It's cash only so make sure you grab some before you go. Only knock is the service could be a little friendlier.
Soulard If you like quirky and eclectic twists on Mexican fare then this is the place for you. There are great tacos and burritos like the Brah'rito with carne asada and chipotle bacon. It is freakin' huge, too. They also have torta selections on the menu and a cool carne asada fries choice in the appetizers. Good beer selections there also. Huddle Bar & Grill 1101 Caseyville Rd. Suite J Caseyville It may look like your average bar, but get a load of the menu and quickly find out it's not. The food is definitely worth a visit. Steak night is a definite time to go. Get a New York strip steak and potato for $9.99. Check out the peanut butter bacon burger, the asparagus in balsamic sauce and the sweet potato fries drizzled with honey, all are delicious choices. Strange Donuts 2709 Sutton Blvd. Maplewood An aptly named donut shop, it is one of the weirdest places you may ever eat, but weird doesn't mean it's not good. Check out the strangers, which are daily collaborations with other local restaurants. The bacon maple donut and the gooey butter donut are always on the menu and always fantastic choices.
If you like calzones and creativity in your food then put this on your food bucket list. They stuff just about anything you can think of inside a calzone, including eggs, salami, pineapples, figs, chorizo, eggplant and zucchini to name a few. Good sauce selections served on the side. Great craft beers available also. Pirronne’s Pizzeria 1775 Washington St. Florissant The pizza here is amazing. They use provel cheese and have a slew of ingredients to go on top of their thin crust pies. During the day they have a great buffet lunch special, which also has a salad bar and soups and appetizers. Frank’s Restaurant 132 West Macarthur Dr. Cottage Hills It is an extensive menu with all kinds of choices, including breakfast selections, sandwiches, steaks, fish, pasta dishes and it’s cheap. Did I mention that it’s cheap?
Cunetto's Corner Cucina 114 N. Main St.
1860’s Hardshell Café and Saloon 1860 S. 9th St., St. Louis Soulard A great place to get some Cajun and Creole food and have a good time to boot. It’s split into two sides, with the dining area on one end with great items like crab legs, gumbo, po’ boy sandwiches, red beans and rice and wonderful crab cakes. The other half of the building offers a full bar and live entertainment.
Sauce on the Side 903 Pine St. St. Louis
Lotawata Creek Southern Grill 311 Salem Pl. Fairview Heights Fatten yourself up at this joint. The menu is ridiculously huge and the portions are even bigger. Get your own plate of fries for a side, or a bucket of onion rings. It offers a creative sandwich portion of the menu and great southern-style dishes, try the Mac Daddy Burger. You won’t go away hungry here, trust me.
Edwardsville This hidden little corner Italian restaurant deserves some love. It offers a quaint dining experience in its small setting, great for a date night or low key dinner. The fettuccine carbonara is really tasty and the salads are fantastic. Check out the fried portabella mushrooms on the appetizer menu, too.

Music Tuning in Yes, Toto to appear in St. Charles
Wo r l d - r e n o w n e d r e c o r d i n g a r t i s t s , Ye s a n d To t o , t o d a y announced they will join forces this summer for a co-headlining North American tour. Among the world’s most influential, ground-breaking, and respected progressive rock bands, Grammy Award winning Yes has sold nearly 40 million albums in a career that has so far spanned more than four decades. YES continues with its tradition of symphonic progressive rock that remains timelessly fresh and innovative. Since its founding in 1968, Yes has created much of rock history’s most important music, including iconic pieces like ‘Roundabout,’ 'Close to the Edge,’ ‘I’ve Seen All Good People,’ “Owner of a Lonely Heart,’ ‘Starship Trooper,’ and countless others. Its albums, including ‘Fragile,’ ‘Close to the Edge,’ ‘Tales from Topographic Oceans,’ and ‘90125,’ have been certified multi-platinum, doubleplatinum, platinum, and more by the RIAA. Yes continues to inspire millions of musicians, fans, and music lovers around the world. “We’re thrilled to be hitting the road with Toto. Yes have always been big fans of Toto’s music, and we think the fans are going to really enjoy seeing both of us together,” says Yes co-founder and bassist, Chris Squire. Few ensembles in the history of recorded music have individually or collectively had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of Toto. As individuals, the band members can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with more than 200 Grammy nominations. With over 35 years together and thousands of credits and accolades to their names, Toto remains one of the top selling touring and recording acts in the world. They recently released their first new studio album in ten years – TOTO XIV which debuted last week Top 10 in nine countries around the world. Music Tuning in The Sheldon to host Alarm Will Sound
The Sheldon presents Alarm Will Sound (AWS), with special guest Syna So Pro, Thursday, May 28 at 8 p.m. in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. The cutting edge chamber group will perform works from the first year of Alarm System, a program that brings musical artists from diverse and unexpected backgrounds together with AWS to create new music. The goal of the project is to expand the circle of those who collaborate with AWS, and those who can contribute their ideas to the new-music world. In this year of Alarm System, the group has worked with jazz/funk virtuoso John Medeski, Icelandic p ro d u c e r / e n g i n e e r / c o m p o s e r Valgeir Sigurðsson, and St. Louis producer/musician Adult Fur. Alarm Will Sound will perform world premieres by these artists at this concert, as well as “Carmen Arcadiae Mechanicae Perpetuum” by Sir Harrison Birtwistle, an incredibly powerful evocation of the song of a mechanical bird. Opening act Syna So Pro is onewoman-band Syrhea Conaway, a self-described “experimental pop” artist who uses looping technology to create a symphonic sound comprised of guitar, bass, keys, violin and more. Tickets for Alarm Will Sound’s performance on May 28 at 8 p.m. are $20 orchestra/$15 balcony, and are on sale now through MetroTix at 314-534-1111 or at TheSheldon.org. Alarm Will Sound’s performances in St. Louis are part of a regional effort that began in 2010 when the group became the resident ensemble at the Mizzou International Composers Festival in Columbia (MICF). Through their continuing involvement with the MICF, they forged a relationship with the Festival’s sponsors, philanthropist Jeanne Sinquefield and the Sinquefield Charitable Foundation, t hat l e d t o t h e F o u n d a t i o n ’s sponsorship of the group’s performances in Columbia and St. Louis.
Alabama Shakes to appear at The Fox
KPNT 105.7 The Point Welcomes & The Pageant & Steve Litman Present is excited to announce Alabama Shakes with special guest Father John Misty live at the Fabulous Fox Theatre Thursday, May 28 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $75, $45, $35, $30 and $25 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. Sound & Color is the eagerly anticipated follow-up to the Shakes’ 2012 debut Boys & Girls, which earned the group three Grammy nominations, including a nod for Best New Artist. The gold-certified album’s breakthrough paved the way for the Shakes—Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, drummer Steve Johnson, and touring keyboard players Ben Tanner and Paul Horton—to become one of the most celebrated live acts in the world, as they delivered unforgettable performances everywhere from Saturday Night Live to the main stages of such festivals as Bonnaroo and Glastonbury. The album’s twelve songs reveal a band honed by years on the road, and drawing from a wide range of influences. The bluesy groove of “Shoegaze” or the garage-rock freakout on “The Greatest” give way to the psychedelic space jam “Gemini.” The gently swaying, chiming title song opens the album with what Howard calls “more of a visual thing, I think of this whole scene going on,” then explodes into the urgent, tightly-coiled funk of “Don’t Wanna Fight.” Long instrumental intros and passages create hazy atmosphere, and then the intensity of Howard’s vocals snaps everything back into riveting focus. The songs were written during breaks in the grueling touring schedule of a young band, sometimes by the members together and sometimes by Howard working alone at her home studio. She notes that there were several dedicated writing periods during the past year, but that “sometimes I wasn’t
dedicating enough time, so I’d bingewrite, sit in the basement and work for 18 hours for five days straight.” When the Shakes began recording at Nashville’s Sound Emporium studio, Blake Mills—a young guitar wizard who has previously helmed sessions by Sara Watkins and Sky Ferriera, and played alongside everyone from Norah Jones and the Dixie Chicks to Lana Del Ray and Kid Rock—came on board as a co-producer to help harness all of the different ideas. With Sound & Color, Alabama Shakes prove that the response to Boys & Girls was no fluke. Expanding on the soulful bluesrock base that made their name, they defy predictable expectations and map an exciting, surprising, and innovative new direction. As they prepare to return to the road, what shines through is a sense of pride and self-assuredness—feelings not often associated with the alwaystricky sophomore album. The show is presented by The Pageant & Steve Litman Presents.

cardmembers early access to see this legendary band perform.” The classic songs fans can expect to hear on “THE WHO HITS 50!” tour will appear on the band’s forthcoming WHO HITS 50! collection. Set for an October 27, 2014 release on Geffen/ Universal Music Enterprises (UMe), this definitive collection of THE WHO’s greatest tracks--from their very first recordings as The High Numbers right up to the present day with the brand new track “Be Lucky”-is being released to coincide with the band’s 50th anniversary tour. The show--described by Pete Townsend as--“Hits, Picks, Mixes and Misses” will see the band play all their classic anthems as well as tackling deeper cuts from their catalog. PETE TOWNSHEND commented, “ Tr y i n g t o s t a y y o u n g . N o t wearing socks. Growing a great big Woodcutter's beard. Might even wear a check shirt on stage and get a tattoo of a Union Jack. Always a fashion victim. But under no illusions. We are what we are, and extremely good at it, but we're lucky to be alive and still touring.” THE WHO have sold over 100 million records since forming in 1964; they brought together four different personalities and in effect produced a musical hurricane. Each of them was a pioneer. Wildman drummer Keith Moon beat his kit with a chaotic elegance; stoic bassist John Entwistle held down the center with the melodic virtuosity of a solo guitarist; raging intellectual Pete Townshend punctuated the epic universality of his songs with the windmill slamming of his fingers across his guitar strings; and Roger Daltrey roared above it all with an impossibly virile macho swagger.
