he beloved St. Louis institution, Circus Flora, powered by Ameren, returns for its 28th season to present "The Pawn," a chess game brought to life through the circus. The World Chess Hall of Fame and the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis partner with the circus to create a delightfully imaginative world under the big top next to Powell Hall, May 29 to June 22.

Every June, more than 30,000 audience members gather under the big top and leave behind the everyday, entering a place of intrigue and awe. Here the impossible is possible. Adults as well as children are enthralled by a performance that captures their imaginations and transports them to a bygone era. The Circus Flora experience is palpable: the audience is completely immersed in a spellbinding story that is woven through every detail, from performers to costumes to original music. Drawing from the history of chess, this mythic tale is steeped in right sights, sounds and the mystique of ancient Persia and India. The audience will journey to an exotic world where myth and intellect collide, and the stone city surrenders to the desert's every shifting sands. Follow the Pawn through his journey through curious creatures and intrigues: knights on mounted steed, bishops zigzagging across colored squares, chess pieces

flying through the air. In this world, the chess pieces do not wait to be moved. They have their own adventures to play out under the big top. The tale is presented by a cast of hand-picked and internationally renowned circus artists. Making his debut under Circus Flora's big top, clown Andy Kuchler plays the Pawn, maneuvering through the enchanting world of the chess board, encountering friends and foes along the way. Kuchler will meet performers and characters such as an equestrian bareback rider, S. Caleb Carinci-Asch, as he balances fearlessly atop his galloping horse. From Finland

and making their U.S. debut, Duo Kate and Pasi will captivate with hand-to-hand and foot juggling finesse. Andriy Bilobrov and his Jack Russell Terriers will show the audience man's best friends like never before. Claire KuciejczykKernan mesmerizes the crowd from above with daring swingingtrapesze performance. Also joining this year are six rare, blue-eyed pied camels from the Canary Islands. "The Pawn" will also feature celebrated Colombian flying trapeze artists, The Flying Cortes, who will introduce new twists, spins and summersaults as well as returning favorites The Flying Wallendas and local troupe, The St. Louis Arches. Circus Flora presents a truly immersive experience unlike anything else in the country. As artistic director and producer David Balding explains, "Sometimes we need respite from our everyday realities. Circus Flora takes you out of the ordinary, and deep into a magical world. Once you enter the big top, you forget everything else."

Deserts to take MoBOT spotlight Cactus sale scheduled For The Edge

tep into a fascinating desert environment at the Missouri Botanical Garden this summer, from June 28 through July 27, and enjoy the Desert Show: Deserts of Southern Africa and Madagascar. Show admission is $5 in addition to Garden admission and is free for Garden members. Sponsorship provided by the Henry Shaw Cactus and Succulent Society.

This unique exhibit will feature plants rarely seen on display from the arid regions of South Africa and Madagascar, emphasizing the extraordinary biodiversity in these floral hotspots. It will also highlight the work being done to preserve these unique habitats. Visitors will get a chance to see some of the Garden’s living succulent collection and explore their many adaptations to survive the heat of these regions. Several assorted genera of desert plants will be on display including Euphorbia, Sansevieria, Stapelia, and Protea. Guests will also learn about the traditional uses of some of these plants, all while viewing bright desert blooms and a replica of an indigenous dwelling. The show provides a unique opportunity for visitors to become familiar with the plant diversity from the world’s arid regions to see plant collections currently not on public display. The Garden's Africa and Madagascar Program has the largest collections of plant specimens from continental Africa in North America, now numbering almost 650,000, with more than 15,000 new specimens being accessioned each year. The Garden's program focuses its efforts on the floras and vegetation of Gabon, Madagascar, and Tanzania, with additional

People planner horror movies may remember James Best as the star of the 1959 cult classic “The Killer Shrews.” His television appearances included two episodes of “The Andy Griffith Show” and three episodes of “The Twilight Zone.” With over 180 acting credits to his name, Best’s most beloved character was Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane from 1979 to 1985 on “The Dukes of Hazzard.” Rosco, under the direction of Boss Hogg, spent each week chasing after the Duke boys. Car show organizers have received numerous requests to bring in a cast member from “The Dukes of Hazzard.” Best is expected to be a big draw to the event. In conjunction with his appearance at the Greenville Graffiti Car Show, Best’s one man show---“Best of Hollywood”---will be performed the night before at the Globe Theater, on the Greenville square. The actor who made Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane an icon of the early 1980s is the featured celebrity at this year’s Greenville Graffiti Car Show. James Best, one of the co-stars of “The Dukes of Hazzard,” will sign autographs and serve as a celebrity judge of the classic cars and trucks on Saturday, June 14 in downtown Greenville. He will also present his one man show “Best of Hollywood” on Friday, June 13. Best’s career began in 1950 and he soon appeared alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest legends including James Stewart in “Winchester ’73” and Humphrey Bogart in “The Caine Mutiny.” Best was also featured in two of Universal Pictures biggest franchises---“Ma and Pa Kettle at the Fair” and “Francis Goes to West Point.” Fans of 1950s

The Riverside Flea Market in Grafton has returned to Grafton. The flea market is held monthly on the fourth weekend, beginning with the March flea market. The market schedule will continue through October in Grafton.  The Grafton Riverside Flea is the largest flea market in the Alton region, boasting of more than 75 vendors with a wide selection of antiques, crafts, the usual flea market fare and food.  There will be a number of new dealers plus familiar faces. The Saint Louis Science Center and 3D Entertainment Distribution invite audiences to step back in time with the new giant screen theater film D-Day: Normandy 1944, which opens at the Science

Center ’s OMNIMAX Theater on April 25, 2014. In May 1943, World War II is at its apex. To counter Hitler and the Axis forces, the Allies decide to open a second front on the western side of Europe. The Allied forces, led by U.S. General Eisenhower, have just months to organize the operation codenamed “Overlord,” with only a 50/50 chance of success, that will break Hitler ’s Atlantic Wall fortress and lead to the Battle of Normandy. Narrated by renowned journalist and author Tom Brokaw, D-Day: Normandy 1944 provides a new, penetrating look at this defining moment in history in a truly unique manner. D-Day itself is well-known, yet few know in detail exactly why and how, from the end of 1943 through August 1944, this became the most important location in the world. “We wanted to make a film to pay tribute to the millions of men and women, soldiers and civilians, who gave their lives for our freedom 70 years ago. Church to appear in St. Louis

Eric Church’s The Outsiders World Tour will launch in North America on September 11, 2014 with 31 arena dates being announced today. Tickets for the tour, which beings in Bossier City, Louisiana, will go on sale April 18 in select markets with additional information made available on EricChurch.com. The Monkees to perform at The Fox

When four young men were cast in the television roles of a struggling rock band inspired by The Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night, few could have predicted the impact The Monkees would make on music and pop culture at large, an impact that still reverberates nearly 50 years later. Assembled in Los Angeles in 1965 by Robert "Bob" Rafelson and Bert Schneider for the television series The Monkees, the quartet of

Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork, and the late Davy Jones brought a singular mix of pop, rock, psychedelica, Broadway, and country to their music. The show itself, meanwhile, paid tribute not only to The Beatles, but also to the comedy stylings of The Marx Brothers and Laurel and Hardy as well as the pop-art sensibilities of Warhol and the emerging San Francisco psychedelic scene.  By the time the group’s TV series aired its final new episode on March 25, 1968, the Monkees had seen three further albums top the charts – More of the Monkees, Headquarters, and Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd., all of which were released in 1967, staggeringly enough – while racking up several more hit singles, with “I’m a Believer,” “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone,” “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You,” “The Girl I Knew Somewhere,” “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” “Words,”  “Daydream Believer,” “Valleri,” and “Tapioca Tundra” all finding their way into the Billboard Top 40. After the series’ two-season run, the group went on to star in the cult feature film HEAD (co-written by Jack Nicholson) and a TV special (33 1/3 Revolutions per Monkee) while also continuing to record new material, but much as the ‘60s gave way to the ‘70s, the members of the Monkees eventually gave in to their individual musical interests and went their separate ways… for awhile. In the wake of Jones’s death on February 12, 2012, the surviving members of the Monkees reunited and performed a series concerts throughout November and December. The shows were received so triumphantly that Dolenz, Nesmith, and Tork returned the following summer for a tour dubbed “A Midsummer ’s Night with the Monkees,” the success of which inspired the trio to hit the road again this May and June as well.

Wildflowers put on a show By TOM UHLENBROCK For The Edge

walk in the park is the perfect antidote for a long, cold winter, e s p e c i a l l y i f i t ’s a hike through the wildflowerfilled woods, wetlands, glades, prairies and bottomland forests of Shaw Nature Reserve. Owned by the Missouri Botanical Garden, the Nature Reserve is a 2,440-acre diverse landscape – which means an equally diverse mixture of plants and animals – with 14 miles of trails to explore it all. The blooms start in April when the spring sun warms the forest floor and coaxes the trillium, Dutchman’s breeches, bloodroot, phlox and other “spring ephemerals” to appear. The orange glow of Indian paintbrush brings color to the glades. The wildflowers continue in waves through the summer and climax in late August with the giant Maximilian sunflowers that stand 8 feet tall over the prairie. “Early June is really nice on the glades, especially when the coneflowers are blooming,” said John Behrer, director of the Nature Reserve. “The prairies get going in summer and early fall, when the asters are beautiful.” One of the Nature Reserve’s spectacular floral displays is the thousands of daffodils that bloom in April on the slopes around Pinetum Lake. Several varieties of the plants have naturalized from bulbs that were planted in the 1930s and 1940s. Another dazzling show occurs about the same time on the river bottoms in the open understory beneath the big trees. A carpet of Virginia bluebells, in shades ranging from pink to baby blue, with the occasional yellow bouquet of celandine poppies, extends as far as the eye can see. “Blooming could be a bit later this year because winter slowed things down,” Behrer said. “Visitors can call here to find out what is in bloom. But there’s always something to see. If people came every two weeks, that would be the way to visit the Nature Reserve.” The Country Cousin Shaw Nature Reserve (636-451-

He opened the Missouri Botanical Garden in 1859 on his country estate, which is now surrounded by the City of St. Louis. In the early 1900s, the St. Louis air was thick with soot and smoke that damaged plant life, and the Garden’s board began looking for rural property as a refuge for the plant collection. In 1925, the board decided on an expanse of rolling fields and hardwood forest 35 miles west of St. Louis on the Meramec River. Today, the site is just off Interstate 44 at the Gray Summit exit.

In the late 1930s, a smoke abatement ordinance curbed the air pollution in St. Louis. Plans to move the botanical garden were canceled, but Shaw Nature Reserve, then called the Arboretum, remained as the garden’s country cousin. While the Missouri Botanical Garden displays formal beds of plants and exotic species, the mission of Shaw Nature Reserve is to return the landscape to what the first settlers found when they arrived. “We’re trying to restore and maintain the natural landscapes that existed historically,” Behrer said. “We know we can’t re-create everything that was here 500 years

ago. There are pieces of the puzzle that are missing, and pieces here that shouldn’t be here.” Over the last 30 years, nearly 350 acres of abandoned farm fields have been replanted as prairie. Forests choked with cedar and invasive honeysuckle have been thinned to restore the open woodlands, where tall trees stand apart with an understory of wildflowers and grasses. Controlled burns are used to keep out exotic species, nourish the native plants and prevent cedars from invading the prairies, glades and woods. The burns mimic natural fires caused by lightning and fires set by Native Americans, and later settlers, to keep the land clear. “ F i re w a s t h e i r t o o l , t h e i r bulldozer, to manage the landscape,” Behrer said. “Tall-grass prairie wouldn’t have existed in Missouri if the Native Americans had not set fires. If we stopped burning or mowing, it would all go back to woodlands, and we would lose a lot of diversity.” Shaw’s other primary mission is education and it provides a variety of programs for both adults and children, with the Nature Reserve serving as an outdoor classroom. “We could restore Shaw to the nth degree,” Behrer said, “but if we don’t use it to change how people think about the natural world, we haven’t accomplished much.” A Hike to the River Maps and guides to the Nature Reserve are available in the Visitor Center at the entrance. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors. One of the most popular places to start a walk is at the restored Bascom House, an elegant two-story brick home built by a Confederate colonel in 1879. The house sits in a grove of stately oaks next to the five-acre Whitmire Wildflower Garden,

which displays some 700 species of plants as a showcase for professional landscapers and home gardeners. The trail through the wildflower garden leads over a small pond, one of several established for amphibians over the years, and into an oak-hickory woodlands, crossing two small streams. It opens onto the prairie, and looks out onto a glade before descending the bluffs to the bottomland woods on the flood plain. “That area down to the Meramec is more like the Ozarks that people generally think of – it’s more rugged than the upper part of the reserve, which is rolling prairie similar to northern Missouri,” Behrer said. “The bottomland forest has been designated a Natural Area by the Missouri Department of Conservation because it still has the characteristics of the original forest. There are some huge sycamores and cottonwoods down there.” After a rest on the wide gravel bar along the river, the hike can head back on a different route, maybe detour to visit the wetlands and its 300-foot boardwalk, for a looping walk of about six miles. While the first frost brings the curtain down on the wildflower show, autumn ignites the sumac and the oak-hickory forest while the tall grasses glow russet and gold in the morning and evening light. But Shaw Nature Reserve continues to be a hiker ’s delight during the cold months. “The prairies are beautiful when it’s hot in July and August, but I also like it out here in winter,” Behrer said. “I especially like to walk when snow is falling. QuickGlance Movie Reviews "The Railway Man"

There are, of course, different ways to make war movies. Some are sweeping, some more intimate. Some are visceral and raw, and some take a more understated approach. There are moments that “The Railway Man,” starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman and directed by Jonathan Teplitzky, feels like a period TV drama — slow, subtle, a bit distant — but that doesn’t detract from the ultimate power of its story, which is both remarkable and true. It also doesn’t detract from Firth’s nuanced and ultimately quite moving performance, as well as an admirable turn by the talented Jeremy Irvine as a younger version of the same man. (Kidman, on the other hand, feels somewhat wasted in an underwritten part.) “The Railway Man” is based on the autobiography of Eric Lomax, a British Army officer who was brutally tortured at a Japanese POW camp during World War II. Lomax somehow survived — unlike many fellow soldiers — but came home broken and haunted, particularly by his ordeal at the hands of one sadistic Japanese interpreter. In his book, Lomax, who died in 2012 at age 93 (during editing of this film), chronicles what happened when he was able to confront the interpreter in person, many years after the war’s end. Without giving away too much, the final resolution is both stunning and cathartic, and the movie conveys its full emotional resonance — even if it takes a long while to reach that level of intensity. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America “for disturbing prisoner of war violence.” RUNNING TIME: 108 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Rio 2"

A vivid and delightful animated spectacle, “Rio 2” is chockfull of colorful 3-D wonder and jubilant musical numbers set against a tale of family dynamics and environmental dilemmas. The sequel opens with a vibrant New Year ’s Eve bash, as partying in the music-filled streets of Rio de Janeiro is punctuated by fireworks bursting above the Christ the Redeemer statue. Supervised by composer John Powell, more emphasis has been placed on the music of this film, which benefits from numbers by artists like Bruno Mars (who also voices the smooth bird Roberto in the film), Janelle Monae and celebrated Brazilian musician Carlinhos Brown. After mating in Brazil in 2011’s “Rio,” rare macaws Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) and Jewel (Anne Hathaway) now have three lively kids who have become accustomed to the same domestication Blu was brought up on in Minnesota. They’re attached to gadgets like iPods and eat pancakes for breakfast, which irks the raised-in-the-wild Jewel. But the family heads off to the Amazon rainforest, to Jewel’s delight and Blu’s strife, when they get wind that a tribe of blue macaws may live there and are being pursued by Blu’s past owner and animal lover, Linda (voiced by Leslie Mann), and her husband, Tulio (Rodrigo Santoro). With a few of the quirky supporting characters from the first film in tow — including birds voiced by George Lopez (as frisky toucan Rafael) and Jamie Foxx and will.i.am (as rapping canary-and-cardinal duo Nico and Pedro) — they soar through a dazzling journey to the rainforest, making the oftenwasted 3-D effect worth it as we take in the broad scope and graphically layered flair. RATED: G by the Motion Picture Association of America. RUNNING TIME: 101 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Heaven Is for Real"

Continuing the recent trend of faith-based films, including “Noah” and “Son of God,” “Heaven Is for Real” is a sweet tale based on a 4-year-old boy’s account of his trip to heaven that’s likely to please the devout, but won’t entice religious cynics. There’s little doubt the T.D. Jakes-produced adaptation of Todd Burpo’s Christian non-fiction best-seller will have a built-in audience, especially on Easter weekend. After undergoing harrowing surgery for a ruptured appendix, young Colton Burpo (Connor Corum) begins recalling his journey for his family: Angels carried him to heaven where he met Jesus (played by Mike Mohrhardt, whose face we never quite see), as well as God, Colton’s great-grandfather and the miscarried sister he never knew he had. Such talk frightens his older sister (Lane Styles) and worries his pastor father, Todd (Greg Kinnear), and mother, Sonja (Kelly Reilly). As Colton becomes more verbal about his supposed encounter, the local paper in the small Nebraska town starts reporting the story. This leads some members of Todd’s congregation (Thomas Haden Church and Margo Martindale) to turn against the Burpo family. Though Todd sticks up for his son, his faith is also tested. “We ask these kids to believe this stuff,” he says to his wife, “but I don’t even know if I believe it myself.” But Todd is captivated, as we are, by his son’s innocence — especially when Colton tells him things he couldn’t possibly know, such as how he saw his parents cope, each in their own way, during his near-fatal surgery. "Transcendence"

First, we had Scarlett Johansson as a human-like operating system. Now, Johnny Depp has been uploaded. If the singularity — when artificial intelligence surpasses human smarts — is indeed coming, at least it has decent taste in movie star avatars. First-time director Wally Pfister ’s “Transcendence” isn’t so much the “Him” to Spike Jonze’s “Her” as it’s a more dystopian vision of the meeting of human consciousness and c o mp ute r inte llige nc e . It turns o ut th at when computers get sophisticated, worse things can happen than Joaquin Phoenix getting his feelings hurt. But whereas “Her” was playful and personal about familiar futuristic concepts, “Transcendence” is clunky and lifeless. It’s like the movie version of a paranoid TED talk. In the early scenes of “Transcendence,” Dr. Will Caster (a disappointingly sleepy Depp) is a TED-style master of the universe, speaking confidently in front of large video screens to eager listeners about neurology and artificial intelligence. But there are also protesters to his potentially all-powerful invention: the Physically Independent Neural Network (PINN), an early artificial intelligence propelled by a room full of computers that Caster believes could, among other things, cure cancer. An assassination attempt with a radiation-laced bullet leaves Caster with weeks to live. Desperate to keep his mind alive, his loyal, sycophantic wife and fellow researcher Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) uploads Caster ’s brain to a PC with PINN hardware. Helping her is their good friend and colleague Max (Paul Bettany, serving as

"Deciding Annie Parker"

“Decoding Annie Parker,” based on a true story, is an often uneasy, yet sentimental and witty tale of two women, one a cancer patient and the other a geneticist. Canadian Annie Parker (Amy Morton) battled breast cancer in the 1970s — and beat it. But after losing her mother and older sister to the disease, she becomes convinced that cancer is stalking her family. Though most doctors then said cancer was a stroke of bad luck, Annie believes she’ll get breast cancer like her immediate family members. Annie checks for lumps daily. And after she discovers one, she must have her left breast removed. Meanwhile, in Berkeley, California, geneticist Dr. MaryClaire King (Helen Hunt) is researching genetic links to breast cancer. When Annie learns of this, she starts doing her own research with a medical student and former nurse (Rashida Jones). Writer-director Steven Bernstein, who was inspired to write “Annie Parker” after reading Parker’s unpublished memoir, offsets gloomy moments in the film with ironic humor, as when Annie breaks from oral sex to suggest that she quickly check her husband for testicular cancer. "Belle"

There may be no whiter genre than the costume drama. The flowing gowns, the horse-drawn carriages, the codes of aristocratic courtship all evoke an era not exactly known for diversity. That’s why the simple poster of “Belle,” a new film directed by Amma Asante, is so striking. A beautiful, finely outfitted black woman in an 18th century parlor room stares back with regal poise. The historical incongruity is all the more arresting because, it turns out, it’s real history. “Belle” is the based-on-a-true-story of an 18th century mixedrace woman, Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), brought up in British aristocracy. While such a tale is undoubtedly rich, filled with questions of identity, class and race, “Belle” is unnaturally rendered like a Jane Austen story of dowries and engagements. It’s an awkward, ill-fitting match of social progress and costume drama convention. And those 18th century conventions of speech and etiquette are often gratingly stilted in “Belle,” stifling the film of any naturalism. Instead, “Belle,” made with fine intentions, has none of the uniqueness of its remarkable subject. “Belle,” written by Misan Sagay, was inspired by a 1779 double portrait of Belle and Lady Elizabeth Murray — one biracial, the other white — captured in seeming friendship. Sagay and Asante (who’s made one film before, 2004’s “Way of Life”) were intrigued by the story behind the painting. 10 anticipated indies for summer By JAKE COYLE Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — More exotic creatures thrive in the shadows of summer blockbusters. Here are 10 of the most anticipated indie films due this summer, nary a caped superhero or city-crushing monster among them. 1. “The Rover” (June 13) — David Michod’s follow-up to his Aussie crime drama “Animal Kingdom” qualifies as a must-see because of the rare quality of his feature film debut. This one, which will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, stars Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson and is set in a near-future Australia where the world economy has collapsed and bandits roam the Outback.

2 . “ B o y h o o d ” ( J u l y 11 ) — R i c h a r d Linklater spent 12 years making this wholly unique film. It charts a fictional family over that time (Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette play divorced parents) and, remarkably, shows the maturation of 6-year-old Ellar Coltrane (playing their son) from boy to man. 3. “The Immigrant” (May 16) — Tales of immigrants arriving through Ellis Island are a well-trod genre, but James Gray’s 1920s drama is distinct in its portrait of the American Dream as both myth and reality. With Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix. 4. “Life Itself” (July 11) — Steve James (“Hoop Dreams”) presents a documentary and ode to the late film critic Roger Ebert. 5. “Begin Again” (July 4) — Much

"The Railway Man" stirs emotions By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge When I first saw the trailer for "The Railway Man," I thought that it reminded me a lot of "Bridge on the River Kwai." I put forth that Colin Firth would be a terrible substitute for William Holden in almost any situation, but there was something about the stillness of his hampered character that appealed to me. It was the haunted coolness that did it. And the subject matter. Nothing makes for better movies that the goingson in a POW camp. Would this picture be all war and mayhem? Or would it be a journey into the oblivion of a damaged mind? I was ready to find out. Eric Lomax (Firth, but played as a young man by Jeremy Irvine)

i s a r a i l ro a d e n t h u s i a s t . H e constantly skims time tables. He can quote you the best route to anywhere on the British Islands. He even collects old memorabilia at auction. As far as hobbies go, it's not a bad one. The thing about Eric, though, is that it's the only thing that keeps him going. We learn at his monthly support group (his old platoon buddies gathered in a diner) that Eric's history with railroads is a dark one that has affected him even now, forty years after he served as a lieutenant engineer in the war. It's also going to be a significant barrier as he begins his relationship, and eventual marriage, to Patti (Nicole Kidman), the woman he charms on a day trip to Scotland. Patti loves him and wants to help him face his demons. To do so, she has to drag

what they are out of Finlay (Stellan Skarsgard), Eric's best friend, the one they call 'Uncle'. Eric's radio operator group became prisoners of war in 1942 when the British forces in Singapore surrendered to the Japanese as part of a ceasefire. Some men were sent "up the line" to work on the ThaiBurma railroad, while others in the platoon spent their days doing repair work on machinery at the base camp. Using his ingenuity, and the spare parts he secretly brought with him, Eric constructs a radio receiver that can pick up the BBC giving his friends information and hope. The real trouble starts when the radio and a map of the railroad are discovered by the sadistic guards. Eric's brave move to accept responsibility saves his fellow soldiers, but brings pain

on him that will ruin his life. For two weeks he is kept in a hut where they torture him near to the point of death, chiefly by Nagase (Hiroyuki Sanada, but played as a young man by Tanroh Ishida), a agent of the Japanese secret police. Beatings, dragging, water boarding, and constant interrogations leave him bloody and barely alive. He never lies to his captors, but they fail to believe the truth his spouts. They try starvation and forcing him to sleep in a doghouse-sized cage, but he perseveres. He forces him to admit to the crimes perpetrated against his comrades and to him in p a r t i c u l a r. H e d e m a n d s t h a t their deaths be referred to as m u rd e r s . H e e v e n l o c k s h i m inside one of the cages that sit on the museum grounds to show him what the punishment was like. Eric stops himself just shy o f w a t e r b o a rd i n g h i s e n e m y and the rest of the film is an examination of revenge versus compassionate forgiveness. It was an emotional powerhouse. "The Railway Man" runs 110 minutes and is rated R for disturbing prisoner of war violence. I give this film two and a half stars out of four.

Fazzi's lights things up in Collinsville By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge Opa. That’s something you may hear if you visit Fazzi’s Restaurant and Bar in Collinsville anytime soon. It’s a Greek exclamation expressing joy or high spirits and it’s the best way to describe my recent visit to Fazzi’s Restaurant and Bar in Collinsville. Fazzi’s is tagged as a restaurant specializing in Greek, Italian and American cuisine and I recently visited with a group of seven friends to check it out. All of us were new to the Fazzi’s experience and none of us went away dissatisfied. The legend of Fazzi’s has been growing throughout the area due to its signature appetizer — saganaki. Saganaki refers to a variety of Greek dishes cooked in a small frying pan. The dish’s name references the pan itself. Most notably the saganaki entrée is served as an appetizer of fried cheese (made from a variety of Greek cheeses) and that’s exactly what they serve at Fazzi’s. At Fazzi’s, the server comes out from the kitchen with the cheese in the pan, takes a lighter and ignites it right next to your table. As the bright yellow flames shoot high toward the ceiling, it is quickly extinguished and a plate of sizzling fried cheese is sat in front of you. My party ordered — not one — not two — but three orders of this strange and unique dish, myself included of course. John, Dustin and I all three went with the flaming appetizer and none of us were disappointed. First of all, it’s pretty awesome to see this giant flame materialize in nano seconds right before your eyes. Then to your amazement, you see a perfect, golden-brown plate of cheese sitting in there when you’re sure it’s going to be charred beyond recognition. Then there’s the taste, delicious. The cheese is piping hot and practically liquefied inside a crusted shell. The taste of the oils used to ignite the flame makes it magnificent and

the sweetness of the Greek cheeses puts it over the top. It’s a unique and unforgettable experience between the taste and the pageantry. As for other appetizers ordered, Steve went with the calamari which was decent also, but didn’t hold a candle to the saganaki. As for main courses, John, Dustin, Brent and Dave went with the old Greek standby, the Gyro plate. The Gyro plate is served with a heaping of Gyro meat (lamb or a combo of lamb and beef), the Tzatziki sauce (made of strained yogurt from sheep or goat milk), tomatoes, onions and feta cheese served on pita bread. It also comes with a Greek salad. All four were familiar with Gyros from other restaurants and none of them were disappointed in Fazzi’s offering. Steve went with the blackened tilapia and was quite pleased with it. I pilfered a bite and it was tender and

had a fresh taste. Alicia ordered a giant Greek salad and strayed to the Italian portion of the menu, ordering a side of mostaccioli and she was plenty pleased, too. The Greek salad consisted of green peppers, mushrooms, red onions, feta cheese and mixed with Fazzi’s special Greek dressing. Finally, I stayed with the Greek cuisine and went slightly more adventurous, ordering the Moussaka. I compare this to the Greek version of lasagna. It is layers of seasoned ground beef, potatoes and eggplant baked with a Béchamel sauce (milk, onion and chicken broth). Layered the way it is, it definitely takes on the look of a Greek cousin to lasagna, but it’s way different in taste. The Béchamel sauce is the all-star of this dish. It is sweet with the fluffy consistency of a custard or thick whip cream. The taste was heavenly.

The sweetness of the sauce meshed nicely with the saltiness of the meat and potatoes and the eggplant. I will admit that it is extremely filling. Even yours truly had to request a to-go box, but it was just about as good reheated as the original out of the oven. As for the rest of the Fazzi’s menu, there is plenty to choose from and the choices span a wide spectrum. On the appetizer menu besides the saganaki and the calamari, there are various selections like: the hummus or tzatziki dip served with pita bread, breaded zucchini, toasted ravioli, crab cakes and Fazzi’s jumbo hot wings to name a few. Moving to the soup and salad portion of the menu, there’s the Greek salad and then a Gyro salad, a buffalo chicken salad and the chicken avgolemono (egg-lemon sauce) soup, consisting of homemade chicken, rice and lemon.

The main entrées offer a variety. There’s the chicken parmigiano, chicken kabobs and chicken modego with mushrooms and garlic, a special avgolemono sauce and topped with melted mozzarella cheese. There’s the pastichio, layers of seasoned ground beef and tubular noodles with Fazzi’s Béchamel sauce baked in it and the dolmades, five grape leaves stuffed with ground beef and rice then baked and topped with the avgolemono sauce. There are also steaks and pork chops available, as well as burgers and sandwiches and a seafood portion of the menu which has: tilapia, fried shrimp, catfish and the stuffed sole (flatfish), an eight ounce sole stuffed with Fazzi’s special crab meat mixture and topped with a creamy garlic sauce. The pasta portion of the menu also includes: shrimp or chicken picatta, shrimp or chicken alfredo, spaghetti and meatballs and herb salmon or chicken pasta to name a few choices. You can also hit up the Fazzi’s dessert menu which only includes three items, turtle cheesecake, rice pudding and baklava. I would like to try the baklava on my next visit. It consists of phyllo dough filled with chopped walnuts and sweetened with honey. As for the setting, Fazzi’s has a large and open dining area. We had to wait a short time for the hostess to have some tables pushed together to accommodate our large party, but once they did there was plenty of space and we were very comfortable. It’s a laid back atmosphere and family friendly. It also has a full bar if you would like to partake in some adult beverages. Price-wise, it’s not too bad. My saganaki was only $5.99 and the moussaka only cost $9.99. The most expensive item on the menu was the 16 ounce New York strip steak at $17.99. I’ll definitely make a return trip and I think the rest of my dinner party agrees, if you gotta eat, Fazzi’s is definitely a place to check out.

Start grilling season with a classic patty melt By ELIZABETH KARMEL Associated Press One of my favorite big city comfort foods is a staple of the diner scene — the patty melt. According to lore, the patty melt originated in California as a burger topped with fried onions and melted cheese served on grilled rye bread. Of course today, the patty melt comes in all manner of variations, including many grilled cheese-style versions done indoors on a griddle. But now that the weather is warming up, it’s the perfect time to try my version of the original — the grilled patty melt. The first step in making a perfect patty melt is to shape your patty to fit the size of your bread. This results in an oval-shaped patty, but ensures that every bite has all the good stuff — grilled beef, caramelized onions, melted cheese and toasty rye bread. I like to use lightly seasoned ground sirloin for a lean but rich, beefy flavor. The classic patty melt calls for Swiss cheese, but I have noticed that many diners are opting for American cheese to get that ooeygooey melted texture. I prefer the flavor of Swiss cheese, but if you really want that wet, melty experience, I suggest a combination of Swiss cheese for flavor and American cheese for texture. Finally, I up the ante on the onions by accenting them with tangy balsamic vinegar. I find the vinegar adds a depth of flavor and cuts through the richness of all the other layers of the sandwich. It also eliminates the need for a tangy condiment, like the Thousand Island dressing that sometimes is served alongside the sandwich. Use the best quality rye bread you can find, one with a slightly chewy crust and a dense crumb. The lighter the bread, the more difficult it will be to contain all the layers of the sandwich. And it is all the layers that make the patty melt so delicious. It is the classic example of the whole being so much greater than the sum of its parts. GRILLED PATTY MELT WITH BALSAMIC CARAMELIZED ONIONS Start to finish: 45 minutes Servings: 4 For the onions: 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 1 teaspoon kosher salt 4 tablespoons balsamic vinegar, divided 3 large yellow onions, sliced into rings For the burger: 1 pound ground sirloin 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 8 slices of fresh rye bread, toasted 8 large slices of Swiss cheese, or a combination of Swiss and American In a large heavy-bottomed saute pan or Dutch oven over medium heat, combine the olive oil and butter. When the butter is melted, add the salt, 3 tablespoons of the vinegar, and the onion rings. Cover and cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove the cover and cook, stirring occasionally, for another 10 minutes, or until the onions are all a deep golden color. When the onions are done, transfer them to

The onions can be prepared to this point up to 2 days ahead, then refrigerated in an airtight container. When ready to cook the burgers, prepare a grill for direct, medium heat cooking. Being careful not to overwork the meat, season the sirloin with salt and pepper, and mix until combined. Gently shape the meat

Place each patty directly on the cooking grate and grill for 4 minutes. Turn and continue grilling until the meat is no longer pink, another 4 to 5 minutes. Once the patties are made and grilled, transfer to a clean platter. Meanwhile, begin to assemble the patty melts by layering each piece of the rye toast with a slice of

cheese. Take the bread to the grill and place directly on clean cooking grates for 1 to 2 minutes, or until the cheese begins to melt and the bread is warm and lightly toasted. Once the cheese has melted, transfer each burger patty to one slice of bread. Divide the onions between the remaining 4 slices of bread, then assemble into 4 sandwiches. Religion briefs Religious leaders appeal for higher minimum wage

WASHINGTON (AP) — Hundreds of religious leaders are urging Congress to raise the federal minimum wage. The Senate is preparing to vote on the measure, which would gradually raise the current $7.25 hourly minimum to $10.10 over 30 months. In a telephone news conference, the group Interfaith Worker Justice announced that a letter calling for passage of the legislation was signed by 350 religious leaders and more than 5,000 supporters and is being sent to members of Congress. The Rev. James Perkins, vice president of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, said the minimum wage should be increased because “the Bible commands us to treat the poor fairly, to not oppress the poor.” Father Larry Snyder, president of Catholic Charities USA, said the Scriptures teach that “our society will be judged on how we treat the poor and the marginalized.”

Congressman exhorts believers to pray

WASHINGTON (AP) — Oklahoma Congressman James Lankford is urging Americans who believe in prayer to pray

for the nation tomorrow. The National Day of Prayer is observed every year on the first Thursday in May. In a House speech, Lankford said although the nation faces daunting challenges, he believes “there is still a God in heaven who hears our prayer” and “cares about our lives.” The Oklahoma Republican, who is running for the Senate, says atheists who complain about the annual observance are free not to pray, and he is free to pray for them. The National Day of Prayer Task Force says 40,000 prayer gatherings are planned nationwide this Thursday, including a national observance in the U.S. Capitol complex featuring members of Congress, Dr. James Dobson and Shirley Dobson, Vonette Bright, Anne Graham Lotz and Don Moen.

Gov. Perry baptized in same creek as Sam Houston

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Gov. Rick Perry has long revered Texas icon Sam Houston and now shares a spiritual connection with one of his political heroes: getting baptized in the same waters. His spokeswoman says Perry was dunked last month in Little Rocky Creek near the small town of Independence in a private ceremony witnessed only by close friends and family. It’s the same rural and rocky spot where Houston was baptized

before becoming the seventh governor of Texas in 1859. Perry was baptized by the Rev. Mac Richard, the pastor and founder of Lake Hills Church in Austin. Perry, who will leave office in January and hasn’t ruled out another presidential run in 2016, has extolled his faith throughout his 14 years in office. His announced his first run for the White House in 2011 just a week after staging a massive prayer revival that drew roughly 30,000 worshippers to Houston’s Reliant Stadium.

Pastor fled home minutes before it was leveled

VILONIA, Ark. (AP) — The pastor of an Arkansas church that’s become a Red Cross shelter says his own home was one of those leveled by the killer tornado that struck the towns of Vilonia and Mayflower Sunday evening. The Rev. Wade Lentz says he and his family fled their home just minutes before the tornado hit, and returned later to find nothing but a slab. The pastor of Beryl Baptist Church in Vilonia says he thanks God that his wife and children are safe. Although he has to rebuild, Lentz is asking for prayers for others who lost loved ones and must now plan funerals. The tornado killed eight people in Vilonia, including two children, and three people in Mayflower.
