National museum now open downtown By TOM UHLENBROCK Missouri Division of Tourism
W
hile impressive exhibits fill the new National Blues Museum, one of the simplest is guaranteed to bring a smile. Next to the display paying homage to Chuck Berry is an image of the artist on a sequence of small photos that flip rapidly when a button is pushed. The animated Berry does his famous duck walk across a stage. Press the button to the left, and he duck walks on back. Jacqueline Dace, interpretative manager of the museum, pointed out a couple of other interesting tidbits about the display that features a red-sequined outfit and red guitar in front of a large photo of Berry in action. “You’ll notice that the sequins are worn off of the shirt by his guitar strap,” she said. “And the guitar is the same one he’s holding on the cover of his autobiography.” The National Blues Museum opened April 2 in a renovated department store building in the city’s downtown business district. The museum retains some of the marble tile floors, ornate light fixtures and huge columns from its previous life. The $14-million museum features 14,000 square feet of displays, plus a performance stage in a nightclub setting that will host local and national acts. There is a full-service bar, and the popular Sugarfire Smoke House has an outlet next door. While other blues museums focus on a single artist or region, the new museum takes visitors on a musical journey that begins when the slaves arrive from Africa and bring the rhythms that spread from the Mississippi Delta up river, back overseas and throughout the world. In the three-minute introductory video, Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin explains how the music sparked the British Invasion that brought the Beatles, Rolling Stones and other English acts to America. “In the U.K, we were transfixed by the Mississippi Delta and the poetry that came out of it,” Plant says. St. Louis is the perfect place for the national museum, Dace said, because the migration of black musicians from the South headed up Highway 61 to St. Louis. Some stayed, and some ventured on to Kansas City and Chicago. “The blues were coming out and creating a whole new genre that was not there before,” she said. “These were not people who were supposed to have emotions, to have souls. It came out in spirituals and gospel music and grew into the blues. They found their voice. “Many people came to St. Louis and went further north, and kind of redefined the music as they went along. But in order to get to a wider audience, you had to come through St. Louis.” The museum earned a rave review from one of those enshrined. Bonnie Raitt was performing in St. Louis and got a sneak preview. She told her sold-out audience: “I visited your new National Blues Museum this afternoon. It’s killer.” The Great Migration A tour of the museum, which is housed on a single floor of the cavernous building, starts with an interactive feature that is destined to be a favorite. Visitors sign in, write their own lyrics on a screen and then add musical riffs at different stations as they explore the exhibits. “You add guitar, harmonica, piano, then mix it all up,” Dace said. “They compose their own song, and it is emailed to them.” The Jug Band Room is sure to be another hit, especially with the kids. Inside a small studio, visitors play the spoons, shakers, washboard or

Several audio displays allow visitors to experience different versions of the same song. You can hear Blind Lemon Jefferson, then Carl Perkins, then the Beatles play “Match Box Blues,” or Blind Willie McTell, Taj Majal and the Allman Brother Band perform “Statesboro Blues.” Dace took a moment on the walking tour to step behind a microphone on a small stage with a life-sized vintage photo in the background. Snap a photo, and she appeared to be singing with Mamie Smith and the Jazz Hounds in 1920. One side of a long hallway was stacked with well-worn luggage. “This is the traveling wall,” Dace said. “It shows how the musicians came from the Delta by foot, by boat, by train and by car during the Great Migration.” Turn the corner, and a dazzling display of silver harmonicas highlights the wall. “This is the collection of Jim McClaren, a St. Louis harmonica player – he had more than 900 harmonicas in his basement and he donated them to the museum,” Dace said. “It sort of looks like a contemporary art piece, now.” Sharecropper Shacks and Juke Joints The museum shows how evolving technology – from sheet music and jukeboxes to digital downloading and social media – spread the blues worldwide. Dace stopped by a long piece of gleaming wood furniture and asked “Remember these?” She was referring to the console players that
combined radio, television and stereo into a wooden cabinet that became a staple in the living rooms of the 1950s and 60s. An older recording device sits in an exhibit that tells the story of John Lomax, curator of the Archive of American Folk Song, who visited the sharecropper shacks and juke joints of the Deep South in the 1930s to make recordings for the Library of Congress. Because of that work, we have for posterity the seminal sounds of the founding fathers of the blues like Son House, Honeyboy Edwards, Lead Belly and Muddy Waters. As you explore the exhibits, an impromptu soundtrack plays in the background, thanks to the three videos that offer classic snippets of musical performances. The unmistakable growl of Howlin’ Wolf resonates from the video that features festival performances from throughout the ages. “Take me, baby, for your little boy... You get three hundred pounds of heavenly joy,” sings the Wolf, aka Chester Arthur Burnett, who was born on a Mississippi plantation in 1910. He’s followed by B.B. King signing “The Thrill is Gone,” and the Allman Brothers doing “One Way Out.” The Blues had a Baby The faces of the Fab Four, along with a pair of guitars, dominate the exhibit that explains how the Beatles and other English groups arrived in America and played their version of Delta blues songs to screaming audiences, many of whom were hearing the tunes for the first time. Printed on a wall is a quote from Keith

Richards, eternal guitarist for the Stones: “If you don’t know the blues, there’s no point in picking up the guitar and playing rock and roll or any other form of popular music.” Another nearby quote, this one from Muddy Waters, says it all: “The blues had a baby and they named it rock and roll.” Standing upright in a case of its own, a sparkling red Gibson guitar, Model ES -355, looks like a sculpture. The guitar was the weapon of choice for a host of musical legends, including Albert and B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Duane Allman, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop. The museum is at Washington and Sixth streets, within walking distance of the Gateway Arch. It has two rental spaces for events, and a gallery for traveling art exhibitions. The first exhibition is 31 paintings by H.C. Porter of Mississippi-based blues artists, paired with their oral histories. Admission to the museum is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors over 65, $10 for college students with IDs, $12 for members of groups of 20 or more adults and $5 for those in school groups of 20. People planner The Fox to host Garrison Keillor
T h e F a b u l o u s F o x T h e a t re proudly presents host/producer Garrison Keillor & friends live at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis for the final time at 4:45 p.m. on June 18 for the popular weekly radio broadcast, A Prairie Home Companion. This performance will be the last time Garrison Keillor will host A Prairie Home Companion in St. Louis. Tickets are $68, $58, $38 nad are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-534-1111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. If you showed up on July 6, 1974, at the Janet Wallace Auditorium at Macalester College in Saint Paul and plunked down your $1 admission (50 cents for kids) to attend the very first broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion, you were in select company. There were about 12 people in the audience. But those in attendance thought there were worse ways to spend a Saturday afternoon, so Garrison Keillor and the APHC team went on to produce close to 500 live shows in the first 10 years alone. There were broadcasts from this venue and that, until March 4, 1978, when the show moved to The World Theater, a lovely, crumbling building that was one plaster crack away from the wrecking ball. (Now fully renovated and renamed The Fitzgerald, it is the show’s home base.) In June of 1987, APHC ended for a while. Garrison thought it was a good idea at the time, but only two years later, the show was back, based in New York and called American Radio Company of the Air. But there’s no place like home. So in 1992, it was back to Minnesota and, soon after, back to the old name:A Prairie Home Companion. T h e re h a s b e e n p l e n t y o f adventure in the past 40-plus years — broadcasts from Canada, Ireland, S c o t l a n d , E n g l a n d , G e r m a n y, Iceland and almost every one of the 50 states; wonderful performers, little-known and world-renowned; standing ovations and stares of b e w i l d e r m e n t . We ’ v e m i s s e d planes, coped with lost luggage, dodged swooping bats and hungry
mosquitoes, plodded through blizzards, and flown by the seat of our pants. To d a y, A P r a i r i e H o m e Companion is heard by 4 million listeners each week on nearly 700 public radio stations, online, and on the American Forces Networks, SiriusXM Radio, Radio New Zealand, and KPRG in Guam. Garrison recalls, “When the show started, it was something funny to do with my friends, and then it became an achievement that I hoped would be successful, and now it’s a good way of life. A Prairie Home Companion is produced by Prairie Home P ro d u c t i o n s , a n d d i s t r i b u t e d nationwide by American Public Media. The program is underwritten by Ford. Garrison Keillor was born in 1942 in Anoka, Minnesota, and began his radio career as a freshman at the University of Minnesota, from which he graduated in 1966.
He went to work for Minnesota Public Radio in 1969, and on July 6, 1974, he hosted the first broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion in St. Paul. Today, some 4 million listeners on more than 600 public radio stations coast to coast and beyond tune in to the show each week. Keillor has been honored with Grammy, ACE, and George Foster Peabody awards, the National Humanities Medal, and election to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His many books include Lake Wobegon Days, The Book of Guys, Pilgrims: A Wobegon Romance, Guy Noir and the Straight Skinny, and The Keillor Reader (Viking). He is the host of the daily program The Writer ’s Almanac and the editor of several anthologies of poetry, most recently,Good Poems: American Places (Viking). In 2006, Keillor played himself in the movie adaptation of his show, a film directed by Robert Altman

QuickGlance Movie Reviews
"The Jungle Book"
You can practically feel the beating heart of the jungle in Jon Favreau's stunning adaptation of "The Jungle Book," which is easily the most visually dazzling movie to hit theaters this year. Like "Avatar" before it, this CG and live action interpretation of Rudyard Kipling's classic tale of the boy raised by wolves feels like a momentous occasion in the technical advancements of big budget cinema. From the thrill of a distant waterfall to the terror of a mudslide or stampeding buffalo, Favreau and his visual effects maestros have created artificial living things that truly look and feel real. Even the animals' ability to communicate in English seems as natural as their breathing and emoting. They have not been sanitized to be cute or less threatening either — even the tender mama wolf Raksha (Lupita Nyong'o). They still look like wild animals and, for the most part, act like wild animals, too. At first, this actually makes their close interactions with the human boy Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi) even more disarming. Eventually your nerves calm and you submit to the magic of this world. The story follows the same beats as Disney's animated feature from 1967, but Favreau and his team made sure to up the intensity a few notches — the hyperrealism of the animals necessitates it. The tension created by the fact that they all have claws and teeth and instinct to contend with is always there. You're already on edge by the time the tiger Shere Khan (Idris Elba, in a truly stunning vocal performance that's both terrifying and relatable) enters the picture. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some sequences of scary action and peril." RUNNING TIME: 105 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"Green Room"
"Play your early stuff," is the advice given to the punk band The Ain't Rights when their dirt-broke, gas-siphoning tour lands a last-minute gig at an Oregon backwoods roadhouse in Jeremy Saulnier's brisk and brutal genre exercise "Green Room." The tip from the spikey-haired 'zine reporter who's set up the show (an excellent David W. Thompson, from "Win Win") isn't because the crowd will be expecting the band's nonexistent "hits," but because he knows the angriest, heaviest tunes will go down best. They'll be playing for skinheads. The band, a grimy group of punks (Anton Yelchin, Alia Shawkat, Joe Cole, and Callum Turner) from Virginia limping across the country, shrug. They've had Neo-Nazis at their shows before. When they drive along a remote dirt road in their beat-up van, they're still not intimidated by the swastikas and Confederate flags around them. They provocatively open with the Dead Kennedys' "Nazi Punks F--- Off." The trouble doesn't come then, but after the show backstage, where the band returns to the green room to find a girl on the ground with a knife in her head. Things go south quickly, and the band is confronted with something far more hardcore than anything in their record collection. The road movie that "Green Room" started out to be veers abruptly into a siege film as the head Neo-Nazi (Patrick Stewart, using his refined cordiality for menace) sends waves of "true believers" into the roadhouse to dispatch the witnesses. "Green Room" is Saulnier's follow-up to his self-financed breakthrough "Blue Ruin," a lean and riveting revenge tale also acted out by a novice in violence (Macon Blair, who pops here, too). RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong brutal graphic violence, gory images, language and some drug content." RUNNING TIME: 95 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"The Huntsman: Winter's War"
"The Huntsman: Winter's War" is one of the more bizarre sequels in recent memory. If modern movies are going to strip every side story out of every superhero universe and beyond, fairy tales should be fair game, too. But it's more than a little odd that the filmmakers here decided to follow up their feminist reimagining of the Snow White story with one focused on Eric the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) and the jilted, hysterical woman (Emily Blunt's Freya), who is trying to keep him apart from his true love (Jessica Chastain's Sara). If this is progress, count me out. Part prequel, part sequel to "Snow White and the Huntsman," this one plays musical chairs with focus and tone. One moment, it's a bawdy, slapstick comedy. The next, it's a deathly serious fantasy epic. Tonal shifts are fine, but this star-studded nonsense feels like it was put together by a committee of robots who were given copies of "Frozen," ''Game of Thrones," ''The Chronicles of Narnia," and five minutes of "Snow White and the Huntsman" as source material. There are about a dozen competing story lines, the only point of which seems to be a futile effort to continually reinvent and justify its reason for being. This film starts before the events of the first. The evil Ravenna (a luminous Charlize Theron) is alive, glowing, glaring and still talking about taking down men and kingdoms. She wants her good-natured sister Freya to fall in line, too, but that only happens when Freya's heart is broken and her icy powers are unleashed. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "fantasy action violence and some sensuality." RUNNING TIME: 113 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.
"Nina"
The questionable casting of Zoe Saldana is only one of the many problems with Cynthia Mort's limp and misjudged Nina Simone biopic "Nina." Little of the High Priestess of Soul's searing clarity of voice or profound struggle comes through in this insipid film whose fakeness is writ across Saldana's dubiously darkened skin. "Please take Nina's name out of your mouth. For the rest of your life" was the harsh judgment laid on Saldana by Simone's estate. Bitter battles over to whom an artist belongs are seldom good for anyone. But it's reasonable to question whether Simone's story should be in the hands of those who would employ black face to capture a proudly dark-skinned woman. It should be said: It's no easy task to gather the multitudes within Simone into a feature film. She was, like her music, unclassifiable. The classically trained pianist was termed a jazz singer and a soul diva, but she's been most identified as a folk singer. As if another form of resistance in a life full of it, her career refused to bend to the typical arc found in music biopics. She had only one top 20 single (her first, 1959's "I Loves You, Porgy") and spent much of her later life in selfimposed exile in Barbados, Liberia and France. Why Mort, who wrote and directed the film, has chosen to focus on Simone's troubled 1990s period in France is anyone's guess. It allows for a fiery kind of redemption story, going from heavy drinking and medical meltdown to a triumphant Central Park performance. But the film is a sloppily stitching of lethargic scenes between Simone and her assistant, Clifton (a sleepy David Oyelowo), in a French Riviera villa. Arguments over taking pills are possibly the least dramatic or important moments in a life that pulsed with and provided the impassioned tempo to the civil rights movement. "The Family Fang"
Family dysfunction takes on new meaning in "The Family Fang," a film about a pair of performance artists for whom everything in life is part of the act, and the effects this existence has on their two children. The elegantly structured adaptation of Kevin Wilson's best-selling novel opens in a scene from the past. In the family car, parents Caleb (Jason Butler Harner) and Camille (Kathryn Hahn) are preparing their adolescent children Annie (Mackenzie Brooke Smith) and Baxter (Jack McCarthy) for something. Caleb is dressed as a police officer and Baxter, at probably five, is asking if he can taste the fake blood again. Suddenly we're in a bank, where Baxter is staging a hold up for the teller's lollipop jar with a gun. There's a shooting, there are tears, and then there's laughter as the family breaks the ruse. Surrounding pedestrians look on in horror at the bizarre, terrifying scene. The Fangs are just in their own world enjoying themselves and relishing in the chaos that they've created. As is to be expected, the future is not as carefree. Now grown, Annie (Nicole Kidman) is a famous actress with a wild reputation who has gotten less interesting with sobriety. The once indie darling is now best known for a string of lousy rom coms and is trying to stage a comeback. Baxter (Jason Bateman, who also directed), is a novelist who had one great breakout, a middling follow-up and is now two years late on his next. An accident and a hospital stint brings the siblings back together again, and back with their parents (Christopher Walken and Maryann Plunkett), who they escaped long ago. The accidental reunion is at turns fraught and comforting, but things turn sour and volatile when the adult kids refuse to participate in another stunt with their too-eager parents. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some language." RUNNING TIME: 107 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"Mother's Day"
What would it take to make you fall off the upstairs balcony at your house in the middle of the day? Could you imagine being so intoxicated by your own karaoke performance of "The Humpty Dance" that it sends you a-tumbling? This is one of a series of ridiculously farfetched events that make up "Mother's Day," the third and worst installment in veteran director Garry Marshall's trio of starry ensemble holiday rom-coms. Even if stars Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts and Kate Hudson are mom's all-time favorites, don't subject her to this cloying, plotless dose of saccharine unless she's done you wrong. The bloopers that play amid the closing credits – one in which Aniston un-hilariously calls Roberts by her real name instead of her character's – are some of the funniest moments in the film. Like "Valentine's Day" and "New Year's Eve" before it, "Mother's Day" introduces various characters whose stories intertwine as they prepare for the title holiday. And, like its predecessors, this latest Marshall romp boasts an extensive allstar cast, including Hector Elizondo, Margo Martindale, Jason Sudeikis, Timothy Olyphant and Jennifer Garner. We meet everyone a week before Mother's Day, as family drama reigns. Sandy (Aniston) is dealing with the fact that her two sons might spend Mother's Day with her ex-husband, Henry (Olyphant), whose much younger new wife wants to bond with them. Sandy's friend Jesse (Hudson) is happy with her husband and their toddler – it's her own racist mother (Martindale) who's the problem. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language and some suggestive material." RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.

The accidental reunion is at turns fraught and comforting, but things turn sour and volatile when the adult kids refuse to participate in another stunt with their too-eager parents. The stunt goes bad, Caleb freaks out and soon after, Caleb and Camille go missing. A distressing meeting with the police forces the kids to sincerely wonder whether their parents' disappearance is serious or just another stunt. While Baxter resigns himself to the idea that perhaps his parents are actually dead, Annie becomes obsessed with the idea that
they're not and the two damaged kids mine past traumas and present complications to try to figure out the truth. The film is brimming with big ideas about art, expression, authenticity and family, which Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire weaves seamlessly into a briskly paced plot, where even flashbacks feel not like diversions, but perfect reveals. Bateman, back in the director's seat after his 2013 feature debut "Bad Words," may not be an especially cinematic director yet, but he sure knows how to capture performances, even if he's just letting his actors do their own thing. Walken is a standout as the art obsessed patriarch, mercilessly indifferent to his family but still somewhat empathetic in his lofty artistic endeavors.
No superhero fatigue here By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge Superhero Fatigue? What Superhero Fatigue? I coined 'SF' about a year ago in response to this never-ending tidal wave of caped vigilantism, mutant spy craft, and candy-colored graphic novel realizations that have done nothing but create seasons in the box office at your favorite theatres. Spring or Fall is time for an untested franchise. Summer? Established Marvel properties abound. I secretly screened the third "Captain America" movie down in Dallas back in February, but I wasn't able to share my thoughts with you until now. I don't know if my confidentiality agreement was binding, but I was not about to find out. The VP from Disney
that showed it to us wasn't half as intimidating as the coordinator of the event; I wasn't going to cross her. Turns out, it was a pretty boss picture that I enjoyed far more than I thought I would. Forget Captain America; this thing's got almost all of the Avengers assembled again for you. There's two phases to "Civil War". The first one is geopolitical and the second one is butt-kicking. Fortunately, sitting through one to get to the other - in this case isn't much of a chore. After "Age of Ultron's" climax in Sokovia, the Avengers are still fighting terrorism and the movie opens with a smashing street chase through the dense and dusty streets of Lagos, the largest city in Nigeria. The team gets the bad guys, but it comes at a high cost with damages to the
infrastructure and death to civilians heaping into a figure that can't be ignored. A line of demarcation is drawn by the chilling Secretary of State, Thaddeus Ross (William Hurt, playing either a heroic villain or villainous hero), and that line is one that super-powered agents have long feared, one in which they could no longer operate autonomously or without rigid governmental oversight. Two factions arise from the situation: Tony Stark's (Robert Downey, Jr.) owing allegiance to preventing further loss of life or Captain America's (Chris Evans) loyalty to a wrongly-accused friend, The Winter Solider, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). And that's "Civil War". Steve Rogers and Iron Man stop getting along. But the really interesting part is watching where the other heroes
from this universe align themselves. Falcon (Anthony Mackie) is as loyal to Cap as Rhodey (Don Cheadle) is to Stark. Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) is a wild card and Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) is clearly jazzed just to be included in the broad ensemble of the film's second half. Two new characters are introduced via this film, each with standalone works to come in the future. We get to meet T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman), the crown prince of fictional Wakanda, who is at odds with most of what the Avengers stand for after the death of his father in a related incident. His alter-ego, Black Panther, is fearsome and also with little to do in the movie. My personal favorite appearance was the new Peter Parker (Tom Holland) who steals both of his scenes as the newest incarnation of Spider-Man. Holland's playful

youth is a gas and you'll be thrilled with his introduction. Likewise, Marisa Tomei cameos as Aunt May in a storyline that may or may not have included her having a romantic history with Tony Stark. That movie I'd also like to watch one day. Either way, the banner showdown between the two "warring" sides takes place on the runway of an airport and it is brutal. Hits are absorbed, destruction is rampant, and the ending is perfectly, infuriatingly ambiguous. I'm tired of my superheroes not playing nice with each other, but turns out the best parts happen when they don't. "Captain America: Civil War" runs 148 minutes and is rated PG-13 for extended sequences of action, violence, and mayhem. I give this film three and a half stars out of four.

Colleen Moore's Fairy Castle on display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago For The Edge Colleen Moore’s Fairy Castle has been on display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago since 1949. And it's still a hit with the young and young at heart. C o l l e e n M o o re ’ s F a i r y C a s t l e i s a fairy dream home adapted to fantastic proportions. This elaborate miniature house was created in the 1930s by silent film star Colleen Moore, fulfilling her childhood fascination with doll houses. The Fairy Castle, filled with remarkable miniatures and artifacts, is a timeless reminder of the imagination, ingenuity and craftsmanship of cultures and artisans all over the world. It became a permanent exhibit when it was donated to the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago in 1949, where it is situated on the Lower Level. The Fairy Castle is displayed behind glass, and the light, temperature and humidity in its environment are carefully controlled to ensure that the artifacts will be preserved for generations to come. Millions of guests have enjoyed their visit to the castle since it first arrived at the Museum, and an audio tour provides guests details of the castle’s many rooms

and treasures. The 9-square-foot castle features about 1,500 miniatures and cost nearly $500,000 at the time it was created. It will delight you with its tiny treasures, including: • A painting of Mickey and Minnie Mouse donated by Walt Disney, along with a dozen other pieces of original artwork from various artists • The tiniest Bible ever to be written, dating back to 1840, as well as a library of other amazing tiny volumes signed by famous authors like John Steinbeck and Agatha Christie. • Ta p e s t r i e s c r e a t e d b y a m a s t e r needleworker from Vienna • Three statues of the Egyptian goddess Isis—more than 4,000 years old HISTORY BEHIND THE CASTLE: Colleen Moore was a silent film star in Hollywood during the 1920s, and her position as one of the most popular actresses gave her the resources to make a childhood dream become a reality. She owned several elaborate doll houses as a child, but later in life, her father, Charles Morrison, suggested she should pursue her passion for miniatures and doll houses by creating one of her own. In 1928, she began the plans dream home of fantastic proportions. She enlisted architect and set

Between 1928 and 1935, about 100 people worked on the Fairy Castle. In 1935, Moore organized a national tour of the Fairy Castle to raise money for children’s charities, and it stopped in the toy departments of major cities’ prominent department stores. In 1949, Major Lenox Lohr, the director of MSI, convinced Moore to have the Fairy Castle make one final stop at the Museum, where it has become a favorite exhibit, loved by generations for the remarkable creativity and imagination it represents. Travel Cruise-in series begins May 13 at the Lake of the Ozarks For The Edge As the sun begins to set over the waters of the Lake of the Ozarks on Friday, May 13, the historic Bagnell Dam Strip in Lake Ozark will heat up with the sounds of revving engines and jukebox classics. One of the largest "cruise-ins" in Missouri, Hot Summer Nights, kicks off its annual summer series from 6-11 p.m. on Friday night. Every year, beginning in midMay and continuing through midSeptember, "The Strip" becomes a hotbed of hot rods, classic cruisers, muscle cars, vintage trucks and motorcycles and even a handful of custom vehicles. Visitors to the Lake will have five opportunities on the second Friday of each month (May 13, June 10, July 8, August 12 and September 9) to take in these awesome autos and enjoy all the fun the Lake area has to offer during the Hot Summer Nights events, which take place rain or shine. Over the last couple of years, Hot Summer Nights has been attracting thousands of visitors for each installment and has also been consecutively named the best annual event at the Lake of the Ozarks by Lake Lifestyles magazine. "Hot Summer Nights has just exploded in popularity," says one of the event organizers, Robert Schwartz. "It's been amazing to watch it grow over the years. People really enjoy the sense of nostalgia as well as the classic Americana vibe along The Strip. And, I'm pretty sure it's the only 'cruise-in' event in the nation where you can come by land or by water. Many people drive in, but a lot arrive by boat and tie off at Beavers at the Dam Bar & Grill, which is right in the heart of the action. So, that just adds to it." This free, family-friendly event features all makes and models of classic and custom vehicles, along with live entertainment, deejays, fun activities for kids, helicopter rides, giveaways and much more. Schwartz says that many
attendees plan their weekend to the Lake of the Ozarks around Hot Summer Nights. Visitors come to explore the different activities and attractions available at the Lake and then head to "The Strip" to have a good time and to see all the sights. "It's a fun street party and people make a full day of it. The fact that it's so family-oriented has really been key in its growth." Event attendees can check out all the classic and custom cars; children get to interact with a plethora of entertainers, including clowns, magicians, face painters and charcoal artists; in addition, kids can
listen to stories of the high seas with Captain Scalawag while he makes his rounds in his mini-pirate ship. The overall theme for 2016's Hot Summer Nights series is "Cruisin' to the Lake," but each monthly installment has it's own mini-theme. The theme for the May 13 event is "Route 66: Detour to the Lake," celebrating the 90th anniversary of this fabled highway, which first took root in 1926 in Springfield, Mo. Hot Summer Nights organizers have rallied multiple Route 66 associations from Missouri, Illinois, Kansas and Oklahoma, as well as other Missouri towns steeped in the
history of the "Mother Road," to set up a Route 66 "village" along The Strip. Many representatives from these associations, communities and organizations will be on hand to tell tales of this storied thoroughfare and provide more information on Route 66 and Route 66 events. In addition, the famed Lennon Family trio from Branson will open the evening with a rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner." O n J u n e 1 0 , a t t e n d e e s a re encouraged to put their tops down and cruise to the Lake to honor the classic "Rag Tops and T-Tops," so there should be no shortage of open-
air carriages to check out. The event on July 8 will focus on "Rats, Rods and Street Machines," where plenty of tricked out, street legal hot rods will be on full display. On August 12, "Since '66: 50 Years of Cruising the Strip" commemorates the history of the Bagnell Dam Strip as well as the Lake area; therefore, many vendors and businesses along "The Strip" will offer special 1960s prices on merchandise and more. The final event of the season, which takes place September 9, is called "Vettes for Veterans" and will be a patriotic tribute to American veterans featuring the Lake of the Ozarks Corvette Club. This installment features a parade for local military veterans, a fly-over by the KC Flight Team, as well as a 21-gun salute. In 2015, more than 100 local military heroes joined the "Vettes for Veterans" parade and rode down the Bagnell Dam Strip in Corvettes as onlookers waived miniature American flags. Museum to exhibit Chinese art
An exhibit titled Real and Imagined Landscapes in Chinese Art will be on display March 11– August 14 in Gallery 225 at the Saint Louis Art Museum in Forest Park. Chinese art is filled with images of landscapes and landscape settings. Some are depictions of imaginary locations and others may represent actual sites at certain points in time, while still others combine real and imagined landscape elements within the same pictorial space or object surface. This exhibition of selected works from the Museum's collection explores how real and imagined landscapes in Chinese art are seen within paintings as well as threedimensional objects. Works in the exhibition include two hanging scrolls bearing titles that refer to actual named places: The Taibo Wine Pavilion at Caishi Rock by Miao Song and Elegant Gathering at the Poetry Niche, a collaborative work by Fa Shishan and his friends. Gathering of the Immortals by Wang Wending depicts the birthday celebration of the Daoist deity Queen Mother of the West in a garden of lotus, plantain, and exotic flowering plants. These screens present symbols of longevity, and were painted in honor of the 60th birthday of the Li family matriarch
Madame Chen. Other works in the exhibition that interpret landscapes through visual imagination include the hanging scroll by Wan Shanglin with scenery that arouses a sense of tranquility, and two porcelain barrel-form garden seats decorated with peacocks in landscape settings. Real and Imagined Landscapes in Chinese Art is curated by Philip Hu, associate curator-in-charge of Asian art. The exhibit is free. For more information, visit www. slam.org.

Religion Religion briefs Archbishop of Havana, key figure in U.S. detente, steps down
HAVANA (AP) — The Vatican says Cardinal Jaime Ortega, who oversaw a warming of relations with the Communist government and played a role in the secret negotiations that led to U.S.-Cuba detente, has stepped down. He is being replaced as archbishop of Havana by Juan de la Caridad Garcia Rodriguez, the archbishop of the eastern city of Camaguey (KA'-muh-gway). Church statements Tuesday did not say if Garcia will be appointed cardinal. The church said Pope Francis accepted Ortega's resignation, which was presented in 2011 under a church rule requiring archbishops to offer their resignation when they are 75. Ortega was named Archbishop of Havana in 1981 and oversaw three papal trips to Communist Cuba. He was so trusted by Cuba that he ferried messages between Presidents Raul Castro and Barack Obama during detente negotiations.
Seattle police investigating racist graffiti found at church
SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle police are investigating after vandals broke into a church and spray painted racist messages on the walls. KOMO-TV reports the Curry Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church was preparing to celebrate its 66th anniversary when church members discovered the vandalism Sunday morning.
Church members found a Swastika and racist insults in black spray paint on the walls inside the church. One message told the congregation to "go back" to Africa. Church elder Charles Eakers says he doesn't understand who would want to harm a church.
3rd man charged in Christmas Eve slaying of musician
DETROIT (AP) — A third man has been charged in the fatal shooting of a Detroit musician who was killed after performing at a Christmas Eve church service. An ex-convict, 28-year-old Devan Williams, was arraigned Monday on charges of murder and carjacking, among other crimes. He was returned to jail without bond. A lawyer will be assigned. Police say Anthony Tolson was ordered out of his Chevy Trailblazer on Dec. 24 and was shot on Detroit's east side. He had played bass guitar at a Christmas Eve service and was heading to his mother's home with gifts for his three children. Police say the 33-year-old Tolson was killed over the expensive rims on his car.

DENVER (AP) — Colorado's Supreme Court has refused to take up the case of a suburban Denver baker who would not make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple, letting stand a lower court's ruling that the Masterpiece Cakeshop owner cannot cite his Christian beliefs in refusing service. The American Civil Liberties Union applauded today's development, saying it affirmed that no one should be turned away from a business serving the public because of who they are or who they love.

chanting Buddhist mantras in search of calm. Most of those picking up the practice are Hindu, but say they see no conflict between their religion and Buddhist chanting. Some say it is soothing, others invigorating. While Buddhism began on the Indian subcontinent around the 5th century BC, it has waned in both India and Nepal while flourishing in different forms in Japan, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Cambodia and other countries. With its easy rituals and lack of dogma, Buddhism has also drawn supporters from afar, including agnostics and Hollywood celebrities. The practice of repeating a mantra is not exclusive to Buddhism. Many across Hindu-dominated India include chanting as part of their yoga. But New Delhi-based sociologist Abhilasha Kumari says Buddhist chanting is seen as less dogmatic, aimed at calming the nerves or creating a sense of wellbeing.

Hillsboro summer concert series returns For The Edge Imagine Hillsboro is excited to announce the lineup for the 7th Annual Summer Concert Series presented by Care Otter, Roger Jennings and Consolidated Communications. The series will be held in the Sherwood Forest Campgrounds on the bluegrass stage located at 920 City Lake Road in Hillsboro on Saturday nights June through September. This summer’s series is expected to be the biggest yet as the talent has played to sell out crowds in major cities and music festivals. Lineup: June 4 – The Steve Ewing Band (Rock). St. Louis, MO Steveewingmusic.com St. Louis based musician Steve Ewing is best known as the golden voice behind the seven piece powerhouse The Urge. Formed in high school back in late 80’s, The Urge took their eclectic mix of punk, reggae, hip hop, ska, and sent a sonic shockwave from the Midwest that can still be felt to this day. After 4 independent label releases they were picked up by the Immortal/ Epic label, home to such artists as Korn and Incubus, and released 3 albums of their own. Alternative radio stations everywhere were spinning “All Washed Up”, “Brainless”, “It’s Gettin’ Hectic”, “Straight to Hell”, “Four Letters and Two Words”, “Too Much Stereo”, and the top ten “Jump Right In” featuring Nick Hexum of 311 fame. Many St. Louis natives fondly remember The Urge from their intense, face-melting shows at venues such as Mississippi Nights and local festivals like PointFest. The Urge spent much of their time touring alongside aforementioned artists Korn, Incubus and 311. Besides still playing with The Urge, Steve as been involved in a multitude of projects including production work for artists such as Lojic, Egress, and many others. However, the passion still lies in performing and he tears it up onstage every chance he gets. Steve Ewing shows come in one of two enticing flavors, whether it’s an acoustic outing with axe-man extraordinaire Adam Hansbrough or a full band assault. Either way you’re in for a stellar mix of classic covers, Urge favorites and outstanding selections from any one of the six independently released albums including the latest, Zodiac. Music Tuning in Stapleton to appear at The Fox
Chris Stapleton boldly introduced himself to the public at-large in 2015 with the release of his breakthrough debut album, Traveller. Released in May on Mercury Records Nashville, Traveller initially debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Country Albums chart with more than 27,000 albums sold, making it one of the bestselling first weeks by a debut country artist in 2015. The album also received extensive critical acclaim and has landed him bookings on multiple national TV shows including recent appearances on Saturday Night Live and CBS News Sunday Morning. Stapleton will appear at the Fox Thursday, June 30 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $79.50, $59.50, $54.50, $49.50 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. Following a historic turn on the CMA Awards—where Stapleton became the first artist to win Album of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and New Artist of the Year at the same awards— Traveller became the first album to re-enter the Billboard 200 all-genre album chart at No. 1, where it stayed for two straight weeks. T h e b re a k t h ro u g h s u c c e s s continued earlier this year at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, where Stapleton took home two awards for Best Country Album and Best Country Solo Performance ( “ Tr a v e l l e r ” ) . M o s t re c e n t l y, Stapleton won six awards at the 51st Annual ACM Awards—Album of the Year (for Traveller as both artist and producer), Song of the Year (for “Nobody To Blame” as both artist and songwriter), Male Vocalist of the Year and New Male Vocalist of the Year. With the six wins, Stapleton ties the record for most ACM Awards won in a single year (only Garth Brooks and Faith Hill have previously won six in the same year). Co-produced with Dave Cobb, Traveller is comprised of songs written throughout Stapleton's 15- year career and evokes his childhood when country, blues, rock and R&B swirled together to create a distinctive sound that still resonates with modern fans.

Dining Delights
Bill Roseberry/The Edge
The adult mac and cheese, above, with chicken and bacon at One World Cafe in Peoria. Below, the tabouli side salad.
One World Cafe in Peoria By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge One World Cafe has been a staple near the campus of Bradley University in Peoria since 1993. On a recent trip north to check out the state basketball tournament with some buddies, I got the pleasure of checking it out. With a gigantic menu of quirky and healthy options, One World Cafe has plenty for everyone. In '93 it started as a one-room coffee house and quickly expanded into the full service bar and restaurant located at 1245 W. Main St., on the corner of Main St. and University St. that it is today. I will admit I was a little nervous when we arrived. Accompanied by a bunch of sports junkies who are more comfortable in a steak house or a burger shack, the atmosphere at One World Cafe surely didn't portray that. The first room you enter when you walk in the door is like a small bakery, with pies and cakes in a display case and a few booths for patrons to sit. Then you walk into the main dining area and there are booths located in the middle of the large room with larger tables situated near the front window. You are seated pretty close to your neighbors, too. The walls are adorned with inspirational sayings, large cultural murals and clocks depicting the different times throughout the world. I thought the growing crowd might start harmonizing in “Kumbaya My Lord. Once you get a chance to look over the menu though you see there is plenty for everyone and some creative twists. If you've learned anything about my eating adventures, I like that. I decided to start my dinner out
24
light. Yes, I can eat healthy when I want. I ordered the tabouli side salad to start my meal. It consisted of chopped parsley and quinoa salad tossed with tomatoes and onions in lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil over a bed of mixed greens. I am a big fan of quinoa, which is a grain known for its delectable seeds which are full of essential amino acids and high quantities of calcium, phosphorus and iron and a great source of protein. In general terms, it's very good for you. The tabouli salad offered a great array of flavors with the quinoa salad, the tomatoes, the onions and the lemon juice. It was indeed a fantastic way to start my meal. If I had one complaint it would be
On the Edge of the Weekend
that the olive oil was practically non existent. Now it was on to the main course and there was plenty to chose from, but I shifted back to a selection that fit the type of dish you're used to me ordering, the adult mac and cheese. I added a little twist though, including chicken and bacon in this great entree. The adult mac and cheese consists of cork screw pasta smothered in One World Cafe's homemade cheese sauce and garnished with parsley. When it arrived the bowl was stuffed with the delectable concoction. The cheese was wonderfully creamy and while the chicken and bacon were sliced thin, they were plentiful and extremely tender, as was the pasta. It was
May 12, 2016
simply delicious. On a sidebar, my buddy Andy let me pilfer some bites of his selection and it was the all-star of what we had at One World Cafe. Andy went with the Cubano pizza. Served on a 12-inch hand-tossed crust, the Cubano consisted of shredded pork, diced ham and shredded cheese on top of One World Cafe's chipotle barbecue sauce. Andy held the spicy mustard and had the pickles served on the side. This pizza was unbelievable. The sauce was rich in taste, but not overwhelming, and it was heaping with ham and pork, which were both fresh and tender. We should have stopped there, but Andy and I went for dessert, too, much to our chagrin. We each
ordered the original groovy cookie and there wasn't anything groovy about it. It consisted of a giant chocolate chip cookie topped with vanilla bean ice cream, chocolate sauce, whipped cream and a cherry. The ice cream was fine and the cherry was a nice touch, but the centerpiece of the dish, the chocolate chip cookie, was like a hunk of concrete. I was seriously frightened I may chip a tooth trying to eat it. So while myself and the rest of my dinner party applauded One World Cafe for their dinner options, I unfortunately don't give the original groovy cookie the same accolades. There are plenty of options at One World Cafe. The menu is gigantic. From breakfast, to appetizers, to soups and salads, burgers, sandwiches and wraps, quesadillas, pizza and main entrees, there is a lot. Check out the full menu at www.oneworld-cafe.com. The Hungarian stuffed pepper was one of the quirky items that really grabbed my attention. It includes a roasted red pepper stuffed with quinoa, mushrooms, carrots and onion and then is topped with a Hungarian-style sauce and a dollop of sour cream. One of the members of our group, Julius, raved about the royale burger also. It's a half pound beef patty on a brioche bun, topped with American cheese, a fried egg, ham and bacon. It can get a little pricey. The tabouli side salad was $6, while the adult mac and cheese was $14. Andy's 12-inch pizza was $15, while Julius' burger was $13, but it was an overall good experience. Next time you're in Peoria, if you're looking for a quirky restaurant with some healthy choices, I recommend One World Cafe as a place to go when you gotta eat.
