Silver Dollar City One of America’s favorite attractions turns 50

By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Possibly the Ozarks’ favorite attraction has turned 50 years old. Silver Dollar City, located in Branson, Mo., is ringing in its golden anniversary in style. A year-long party, a new $7 million ride, special birthday events, top-name entertainment, new shows for each of its six world-class festivals and $50,000 in prize give-aways are just some of the special ways that Silver Dollar City is sharing its anniversary with patrons. Believe it or not, more than 65 million guests have visited Silver Dollar City since it opened. When a nature-loving Chicago family leased a cave in the Ozarks, what they had in mind was a summer cave tour business. What they developed was a theme park attracting more than 2 million people each year. That hole in the ground is what became known then as Marble Cave, named for its limestone walls that were originally thought to be marble. The cave was first discovered in the 1500s by the Osage Indians, and adventurers dropped themselves into it on ropes 200 feet into the main chamber in the 1880s. A group of Union Civil War veterans formed a mining company to mine resources from the cave, bringing out tons of nitrogen-rich bat guano (poo-poo) from the cave in the 1880s, bur never found marble. Nearly 300 choir members from local Branson churches sing praise and worship songs on Sunday evening along with nearly 4,000 patrons in the audience at the Echo Hollow Outdoor Amphitheater. The event brought to a close the 50th anniversary celebration weekend. purchased it sight unseen. He traveled to the Ozarks with his two daughters in 1894, opening the cave to public tours. The cave even got a mention in Harold Bell Wright’s “The Shepherd of the Hills,” drawing even more curious visitors to the area. In 1946, Chicagoans Hugo and Mary Herschend vacationed in the Ozarks and discovered the cave that then was renamed Marvel Cave, because of its awesome proportions. They loved the cave, and when the Lynch daughters decided to retire, they offered the Herschends a 99-year lease on it. Mr. Herschend had been looking for a business that would allow his family to work together. In April 1950, Hugo and Mary and their teenage sons, Jack and Pete, took over the management and tours of the cave. That first year, Marvel Cave drew 8,000 visitors. After Hugo passed away in 1955, his wife and sons went forward with what was planned to be an 1880s Ozark village to offer tourists the experience of demonstrations from traditional Ozark craftsmen. Mary was committed to authenticity and preservation, there would be no cheap storefronts. She also insisted on preserving the natural beauty of the area, particularly the trees. In 1960, the Herschends opened the village they called Silver Dollar City, named for the promotional idea of giving visitors silver dollars as change. Little was spent on the promotion of the park, but word quickly spread when visitors began being questioned about the silver dollar coins they were using to pay for gas and other purchases. The first year, Silver Dollar City drew more than 125,000 people, four times more visitors than the number that toured

Marvel Cave. In 1969, Silver Dollar City drew national attention when producer Paul Henning brought the cast and crew of the popular “Beverly Hillbillies” television show to the park to film five episodes. Those episodes have been re-released on a special DVD by CBS and is available at Silver Dollar City for those who would like to experience the city look at that time. Silver Dollar City now encompasses more than 100 acres, offers numerous thrill rides, maybe best know for “Fire in the Hole” and other roller coasters such as “Thunderation” and “Powder Keg.” This year the park added “Tom and Huck’s RiverBlast” which is a super soaking water raft ride that not only allows the ride participants to shoot targets, but visitors around the ride to super soak the riders. Make sure to be ready for a wet ride! Six festivals throughout the year offer a variety of entertainment and activities throughout the year, including World-Fest, Bluegrass and BBQ, Kidsfest, Southern Gospel Picnic, National Harvest Festival and finally An Old TIme Christmas Festival. Kung Fu – the legend comes to Branson By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge The White House Theatre, located at 2255 Gretna Road, in Branson, Mo., (directly behind the Tanger Outlet Mall) is the new home of the “Chun Yi: The Legend of Kung Fu.” The production hosts a cast of 60 Chinese performers, some of whom participated in the opening ceremonies at the Beijing Olympics. The theatre was recently p u rc h a s e d b y C h i n a H e a v e n Creations for the sole purpose of bringing this production to the Branson area. The officials of China Heaven researched other tourism destinations including Las Vegas, Wisconsin Dells, Pigeon Forge and even New York City. But the family values that Branson portrays along with the demographics and the 8 million annual visitors helped tip the scales in Branson’s favor, convincing the Chinese group to choose the Missouri location. “We are amazed by the rich history and abundance of business in this town,” said Cao Xiaoning, Chief Executive Officer of China Heaven. “What we want to show you is the vibrant spirit of modern China which is making great progress and heading for interrnationalization.” The premise of the show is a mixture of dance, acrobatics, music, mixed with martial arts and a plot that people of all ages will relate to and enjoy. The basic story line is explained,”A venerable temple master tells a fearful young apprentice the story of a legendary Kung Fu hero to give him insight into the life of a monk.” The story begins when the young Chun Yi is brought by his mother to the temple to start his apprenticeship to become a monk. At first he finds it difficult to adapt to the strict discipline. Under the tutelage of the wise Master, the boy realises if he resists temptation and distraction he will attain focus and competence. At his initiation he is given his name “Chun Yi” - the Pure One. Growing up, the boy studies hard. Dedicated in both mind and body he learns the art of Zen and skills of Kung Fu, collecting vital life energy, Qi, from heaven and earth. He learns to look to nature and the movements of animals, and carves his body like the stone and steel of the weapons he masters. The Master warns him that truth can easily be seduced by ego.

Neal McCoy – he’s the real McCoy Two-time CMA Entertainer of the Year dazzles Branson crowds By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge This job affords me a few tiny perks once in a while. One of those perks has been to attend a number of productions and shows that I have been invited to, allowing me to write and share what I saw with the nice folks that read my articles. Well, in my journey as a writer, I think I met who might really be the nicest guy in show business. His name is Neal McCoy. Yes, this is the same Neal McCoy who is a two-time CMA Entertainer of the Year, has three platinum records and one gold record. But those accolades don’t mean a thing compared to McCoy’s feelings about his fans. Although it has been a few years since McCoy has had a hit single like, “The Shake,” or “Wink,” or “Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye,” McCoy is still one of country music’s hardest working performers and he gives the crowd 110 percent every time. McCoy began in the business more than 20 years ago and did not become a success over night. He has played the bars and the run down honkey-tonks and has known what it is like to make a hard-earned dollar. After a few changes in his music career and record labels, McCoy did hit it big and still has a huge adoring

fan base that travels the country just to catch one of his shows. He is now appearing in Branson, Mo., at the Clay Cooper Theatre, off and on throughout the year. The Clay Cooper Theatre recently relocated further down what is known as “The strip” to 3216 West Highway 76, in the theater across from The Titanic exhibit. I have attended a number of concerts and variety shows over the years, but I have never witnessed a performer making as big of an attempt to either shake the hand, high five, fist bump or hug every single person in the theater. Neal McCoy managed to do just that. He sang tribute songs to the likes of Frank Sinatra and his former touring mate, Charlie Pride. He sang some old classics and hits of his own, along with a few hymns and even a rap to the theme from the Beverly Hillbillies, which became one of his hits. He talked to and with the crowd, even talked on a cell phone to someone who had been listening via “Verizon,” and took a photo during the performance with an 88-year-old birthday girl. A woman even started talking to him in the middle of a song to tell him that her daughter wanted one of the t-shirts of him in his tight pants. He stopped the performance and shared her request with the crowd, to laughs of course, but made sure her request was fulfilled. Neal is a huge supporter of the USO, traveling all over the world entertaining the troops who are serving our country. That began in 2001, after he was contacted by Wayne Newton to participate with him. Since that time, Neal has not stopped touring with the effort, maybe even keeping him from furthering his own career. He is very passionate about the troops that are serving and feels he should do what he can to make that a little easier. His efforts have not gone unnoticed as in May of 2005, he won the Academy of Country Music’s Home Depot Humanitarian Award for his extensive work with the USO and the East Texas Angel Network. He was honored again in 2006 at the 37th Annual Country Radio Seminar in Nashville with the Country Radio Broadcasters’ Artist Humanitarian of the Year Award. And in 2007, the Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas honored the singer with the W.B. and Brandon Carrell Humanitarian Award, the highest honor given to a non-Mason. During his Branson performance, he showed a video tribute as he sang a patriotic medley highlighting many USO tours he has participated

in. You could tell just by the looks on the many soldiers’ faces that their spirits were uplifted and they were much appreciative of Neal’s giving spirit. At the completion of his show, Neal invited anyone who wanted to stay to meet him in the lobby for photos and autographs. He stood for photos, signed his name at least a hundred times and even granted some interviews after the crowd dispersed. Anyone who wanted a minute of the performers time got it. People shared story after story as he patiently listened and laughed with his fans. The messages that Neal’s fans walked away with were that he cared about his fans and he was a regular guy who appreciated that everyone paid their hard earned money to come and see him. And let me say, everyone got more than their money’s worth! Whether you are a country music fan or not, if you make it to Branson when Neal McCoy is performing, make every effort to see his show. Shepherd of the Hills celebrates 50 years By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge The Ozark Mountains are the beautiful backdrop of Branson. Branson has become one of the nation’s largest vacation destinations over the past several decades, known for its family entertainment, country music and hillbilly comedy. When considering the history of Branson, many think about the origins of the tourism business beginning with Silver Dollar City. Although Silver Dollar City plays an important part in creating the tourist location that Branson has grown to be, the fact is that The Shepherd of the Hills is where the original roots of tourism began. It all began when a Christian minister, Harold Bell Wright, was diagnosed with consumption (tuberculosis) and was given the prescription to head for a warmer, dryer climate. On his journey south, he made it to the White River in the Ozark Mountains, which was flooded at the time, making it impossible for the minister to continue his travels until the water subsided. H e t o o k re f u g e w i t h J o h n and Anna Ross, a couple whose homestead was not far from the river. The Ross’s hospitable welcome and the beautiful setting of the mountains lead Wright to try his hand at writing about what he was learning and experiencing while waiting on the river to recede back into its banks. Over six years later, the result was the publishing of “The Shepherd of the Hills” in 1907. The book became a best-seller and still remains the fourth best selling book of all time. As people became familiar with the “The Shepherd of the Hills” story, they also became curious about the story setting of the Ozark Mountains. In 1925, after the Ross’s deaths, a woman named Elizabeth McDaniel purchased the Ross homestead. She painstakingly acquired back many of the furnishing that had been sold off at auction and made the site available for tours. She eventually built her own home on the site, which now houses the ticket office. Through many adaptations, the popular book soon became a theatre production performed on the property. The original “two act” portrayal is now a record breaking full production that is performed in a state-of-the-art outdoor amphitheater, known as the “Old Mill Theatre.” People have returned year after year, bringing the next generation to enjoy the story that even though is a work of fiction, reflects the life that author Wright

Old Matt’’s Cabin at Shepherd of the Hills captured more than 100 years ago in his beloved book. Over the years, not only has the popularity of the production helped to maintain the homestead, but has made way for other attractions and events to be opened on the property. In 1988, Clydesdale horses made their debut on the homestead. The horses were also added to the Newborn King Christmas pageant and the illuminating Trail of Lights display that are part of the Ozark Mountain Christmas. In 1989 the Inspiration Tower opened, making a way for visitors to enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view that can only be seen from the top of the tower. In 2002, a fire struck the Pickin’ Parlor Theatre, the main gift shop and Aunt Mollies Restaurant. This didn’t discourage the proprietors or the staff of “The Shepherd of the Hills” Historic Homestead and Old Mill Theatre. The rebuilding began,

making way for bigger and better things. This year, after nearly 10,000 performances and the addition of “Sons of the Pioneers” dinner show, there is no sign of things slowing down. Possibly one of the reasons for the popularity and continued growth is the staff and cast that consider themselves family. Cast member Russell Beliech started with the cast back in 2001. His sentiments capture the essence of how this group brings the family feel to the stage production and the homestead each and every day. “When I first went to a job fair for ‘Shepherd of the Hills,” I told them I was willing to pull the weeds out of their flower beds or whatever they needed me to do. I was moving to the area within the next two weeks and needed a job. Not only did they give me a job, but I became a cast member and tour guide right then and there and I’m still loving every minute of it. I think

it was my beard and longer hair that got me in, but I became family quickly and that is what made me stay,” said Beliech about his origins at the theater. “When you start here, there is always a place here for you. You can stay as long as you like.” An example of a cast member who has been part of the family as long as she wants to be is Dorothy Kniffer, a cast member since 1967. There are a number of others who have been with the cast since the early ‘70s and ‘80s. A new and exciting addition to the homestead that is scheduled to open the end of May, 2010, is the “Vigilante ZipRider.” Guests will travel up the glass elevators to the observation deck of the “Inspiration Tower” where they will board the zip lines connected to the 230 foot high deck. The four zip lines will whisk brave riders on the adrenaline pumping downhill ride over the 160 acre historic

homestead. There are currently only 10 of these “ZipRiders” in the world, which offer a seat attached to a cable, leaving riders hands free to enjoy the ride. There is no harness, no helmet or no safety net needed for this ride. It has been designed in such a way that the rider is seated in a nylon safety seat and can just sit back and enjoy the amazing view. You won’t go hungry Texas Land and Cattle Steak House among Branson’s top restaurants By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Although shopping is the main attraction at Branson’s Landing, there are also a number of great restaurants to try. One of the most popular is the Texas Land and Cattle (TXLC) Steak House, located in the heart of Branson’s Landing, right above the fire and water fountains overlooking Lake Tanneycomo. The outdoor dining option is perfect for a nice casual dinner or to take in the music at the outdoor amphitheater. Known mostly for their “tender grain-fed” beef steaks, TXLC also offers a number of other great dishes. Their appetizer menu boasts a spinach and artichoke dip served with tortilla chips, smoked sirloin nachos, fried jalapenos, Texas hot wings, onion strings, steak queso, shrimp and avocado cocktail and “Queso Blanco” –a white queso simmered with jalapenos, onions and cilantro, topped with pico de gallo and served with tortilla chips, and fried pickles. There are a variety of sandwiches that are sure to fill up the hungriest diner: Bacon cheddar steak burger; TXLC steak burger-mesquite-grilled, ground steak topped with lettuce, tomato and red onion; mushroom-swiss steak burger; “Knife and Fork” chili cheese steak burger,; ribeye steak sandwich; “The Perfect” chicken sanwich; a classic sirloin dip and a Texas cheesesteak. They are known for their ice cold iceberg wedge served with bleu cheese dressing, crumbled bleu cheese, diced tomato, bacon and red onion rings. Soups offered are smoked chicken tortilla soup, steak soup, TXLC chili, and more. Maybe a little fish is more to your liking. I personally enjoyed the TXLC fish tacos, which included hand-battered crispy tilapia, cheese, pico de gallo, cabbage and their signature sauce for dipping, all stuffed in a flour tortilla. Some of their other main

entree’s include baby back ribs, jalapeno pork chops, handbreaded shrimp, mesquite-grilled shrimp, margarita chicken, panseared tilapia, salmon, country fried chicken and a Southwest chicken pasta. But of course, it wouldn’t be Texas Land and Cattle without the steak offerings. All steaks are carefully grilled to order and are served with a choice of soup, salad, or lettuce wedge, and any other side item. Choose from their Texas ribeye, peppercorn ribeye, Texas bone-in ribeye, filet mignon, New York strip, TXLC sirloin, Texas-sized P o r t e rh o u s e , c l a s s i c c h o p p e d steak, bacon-wrapped sirloin, country fried sirloin or their signature smoked sirloin. The desserts are what a dessert lover dreams of. The portions are huge and the sweetness stacked h i g h . Tr y t h e “ J a c k D a n i e l ’ s pie,” or the “Deep South” apple

I would give TXLC a thumbs up and would suggest the next time you are in Branson, head to the Landing and give them a try. Things to do before your new carpet arrives If painting, do this first and save some paint for touch up. Find out in advance who is moving the furniture. People People planner Zoo to add education gallery at The Living World The Monsanto Company today presented a gift of $2 million to the Saint Louis Zoo to fund the Monsanto Education Gallery at The Living World. The Monsanto Education Gallery will be a flexible, multi-purpose area in the lower level of The Living World and will provide an expanded learning area for the Zoo’s Education Department. The area will provide guests and visitors an additional space to receive high quality science, environmental and conservation education programs, activities and guest experiences from the Zoo staff and trained volunteers, all designed to deepen the connections between people and animals. The experience at the Monsanto Education Gallery is focused on families with children ages birth to nine, though all ages are welcome. “It has long been our dream to have a place where children can experience meaningful new links with nature and the animal world, and now Monsanto Company has made that possible,” said Dr. Jeffrey P. Bonner, Dana Brown president & CEO of the Saint Louis Zoo. “We strongly believe that if children enjoy programs and activities that connect them to our animals, they will be more interested in helping them and protecting their future.” The first program to use the Monsanto Education Gallery will be the ZOOmagination Station, the Zoo’s new discovery room experience that invites young children and their caregivers to create, explore, investigate and imagine, while discovering the animal world together. Other

Chesterfield Garden Tour set Chesterfield’s fourth annual Garden Tour will be held Saturday,

June 12 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., rain or shine. This self-guided tour offers six distinctly different residential Chesterfield gardens for a day of inspiration. A variety of gardens are featured this year, each illustrating a different area of gardening such as those dealing with slopes, drainage, full sun, shade, and water features. New to the tour this year are three connecting gardens, which enhance the neighborhood as well as each other ’s space. All gardens were homeowner designed and planted. Kay Folsom, event chairperson, states that, “All of our homeowners have successfully dealt with problems that arise in everyone’s landscape plans. The uniqueness with which they have addressed their individual gardens illustrates creativity, patience and hard work.” Ponds, pools and waterfalls can also be found on the tour along with entertainment and relaxation areas. Patio tables will be set in some gardens by area floral designers. Imogene’s Tea Room & Botanicals, Mary Tuttle’s and FOB St Louis will charm participants with their whimsical table designs and floral arrangements. Master Gardeners will be on hand, as will the various homeowners to answer questions about the gardens. Stingrays at Caribbean Cove presented by UMB Bank will be open April 24 through September 26, 2010. Watch these unique animals as they glide through a warm saltwater pool, dip your hands in to allow the gentle stingrays and horseshoe crabs to touch you, and at various times each

day, take an opportunity to feed them. Located under a pavilion near Lakeside Cafe, the cownose rays, southern stingrays and horseshoe crabs swim through a 17,000-gallon pool within a tropical setting. These are hardy species that interact well with people in a safe and fun manner. “We’re pleased to bring back this popular exhibit for our visitors,” said Dr. Jeffrey P. Bonner, Dana Brown president & CEO of the Saint Louis Zoo. “Connecting people with

wildlife is an important part of our mission. Not everyone in our part of the world has had the chance to get in touch with ocean life in such a close-up intimate way.” Along for the swim this year are horseshoe crabs, which are more closely related to spiders and scorpions than to true crabs. These bottom-dwelling creatures

have a hard exoskeleton to protect their soft body and a long tail to help them steer through the water. The horseshoe crab is a living fossil. It has been on the earth for 220 million years, longer than dinosaurs, and it survives today almost identical to its ancient ancestors. Admission

People People planner Garden to host Chinese Culture Days Experience traditional Chinese arts, music, culture and cuisine with Chinese Culture Days at the Missouri Botanical Garden, Saturday and Sunday, May 15 and 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for children (ages three to 12) and Garden members. Purchase tickets in advance online at www.mobot.org. Festivities begin Saturday at 11 a.m. with a grand parade led by a dazzling 70-foot, 24legged dragon winding through the crowds to dispel bad luck and evil spirits. Traditional martial artists and lion dancers follow, accompanied by gongs and drums, to bring in good luck for the Year of the Tiger of the Chinese zodiac. The parade will be repeated again at 2 p.m. both days.

A host of activities surround the Grigg Nanjing Friendship Garden, also known as the Chinese Garden. The private “Scholar’s Garden” is filled with pavilions, bridges and decorated pavements, affirming the idea that Chinese gardens are built, not planted. These structures reflect the traditional Chinese shan shu—mountain and water—landscape. Stones around a central pool of water symbolize the five sacred mountains in China. Take a guided tour of the Chinese Garden hourly between noon and 4 p.m. Experience lessons in the ancient martial art of T’ai Ji at 1 and 3 p.m. Throughout the day, enjoy tea tastings and Chinese traditional music, played on the ancient pipa and Gu Zheng instruments. Witness an incredible display of elegant and riveting dance and acrobatics performed by the

Shanghai acrobats. For over 40 years, the New Shanghai Circus Troupe has worked to perfect the fine Chinese folk art of tumbling into an international award-winning performance involving both artistry and acrobatics. Performances are held at noon and 4 p.m. at the outdoor Cohen Amphitheater. Hone your home cooking skills with a Chinese cooking demonstration at 2:30 p. m. in the lower level of the Kemper Center for Home Gardening. Visit the outdoor food court, where dumplings, egg rolls, lo mein and other mouth-watering favorites will be available for purchase from local restaurants and Chinese organizations. A program of regional styles of Chinese fashion and cultures will take place twice daily at 1 and 4:30 p.m. inside the Shoenberg Theater. Seating is limited. “Date Night”

Steve Carell and Tina Fey’s night out is not so much a bad date as a sad date. These are two of the funniest people ever on television, yet this big-screen comedy is a dreary, uninspired waste of their talents — and those of the top-name cast inexplicably appearing in throwaway roles, including Mark Wahlberg, Mark Ruffalo and James Franco. The movie manages the barest glimmers of the droll humor of Carell’s “The Office” and the snappy wit of Fey’s “30 Rock.” Carell and Fey have an easy, affectionate rapport as run-down parents whose big evening out leads to mistaken identity and sets them on the run from crooks. The actors try hard to make it work, but the lowbrow sensibilities of director Shawn Levy (the “Night at the Museum” movies) leave them tottering through painful verbal exchanges, lame stunts and other dreadfully unfunny hijinks. RATED: PG-13 for sexual and crude content throughout, language, some violence and a drug reference. RUNNINNG TIME: 88 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

“Oceans”

Fish that look like rocks — or scarves, or a jeweled brooch, or anything but fish — are among the fascinating underwater creatures that inhabit “Oceans.” This stunningly beautiful documentary is the second in a series from the new Disneynature label, which gave us “Earth” exactly one year ago on Earth Day. Whereas that film followed wildlife across the globe, “Oceans” takes a plunge deep into its waters, with jaw-dropping results. Directors Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud provide a truly immersive experience, without the three-dimensional IMAX effects of the similar — and similarly awe-inspiring — “Under the Sea 3D” from 2009. Having spent seven years working on “Oceans,” including four years gathering footage, they’ve created countless how’d-theyget-that? shots. The narration from Pierce Brosnan can get a bit cutesy at times, but that’s probably to make “Oceans” as palatable as possible for the young viewers to whom much of the film is intended. Like its recent predecessors, “Oceans” also

contains a a message about the importance of protecting our underwater expanses and the beings that call them home from pollution and climate change: familiar but, unfortunately, still necessary words to hear. “Furry Vengeance”

Brendan Fraser has built a small, dorky industry by being an exceptionally smiley fellow. In “Furry Vengeance” (directed by Roger Kumble), he plays a father, Dan Sanders, who has moved his family to the Oregon woods, where he hopes to please his demanding boss (Ken Jeong) by overseeing a new suburban housing development. His wife (Brooke Shields) and his mopey teenage son (Matt Prokop) miss the city. As Dan supervises the “Rocky Springs” development, an uprising takes form and the forest’s animals (a mixture of real-life, trained animals and CGI) resort to guerrilla warfare. The irony is that Dan’s company purports to be “green”; Dan is due a lesson in what it takes to be eco-friendly. (The message is courtesy production company Participant Media, which made “The Cove” and “Food Inc.”) No animals may have been hurt in this hammy production, but Fraser was. RATED: PG for some rude humor, mild language and brief smoking. RUNNING TIME: 91 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.

“Harry Brown”

Harry Brown, a widower and ex-Marine played by Michael Caine, watches the hooligans who terrorize his workingclass London neighborhood from the still of his tidy, lonely apartment. In no time, he will take justice into his own hands in the name of all that is good and right in this world. Because somebody’s gotta do it. He doesn’t have a lawn, but if he did, he’d tell those kids to get off it. The first feature from director Daniel Barber has unmistakable echoes of “Gran Torino,” and “The Brave One” and “Death Wish” before it, and even Caine’s

own “Get Carter.” And so his vigilante hell-raising might have seemed more thrilling if only it weren’t so overly familiar and predictable. Still, Caine brings a quiet dignity to this regular Joe, as you can imagine. This is an easy fit for him and the soft rumble of his voice, the world-weariness of his demeanor. “A Nightmare on Elm Street”

One, two, Freddy’s coming for you ... again? No seriously, Freddy’s back again? How is that possible? He’s a psycho killer and all, but still, he’s been through a lot since the original “A Nightmare on Elm Street” back in 1984. After all those sequels, you’d think arthritis would have set into those knived fingers of his. The sixth “Elm Street” movie allegedly was the “Final Nightmare,” and still more films followed. Now, we have a remake of the first movie with Jackie Earle Haley filling in for the venerable Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger. Wes Craven’s core nugget of a concept remains intact: If you die in your dreams, you die in real life. It was truly inventive and disturbing then, and it allowed for an exploration of the frightening power of the subconscious. With his jaunty fedora and torn sweater, his hideous, scorched skin and his arsenal of one-liners, Freddy could be anywhere at any time. By now, though, the novelty has long since worn off, and cheap, generic scares are all that are left. The first feature from commercial and music-video director Samuel Bayer has a more artful look than you might expect from a horror remake; he also directed Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video, and his “Elm Street” has a similar steamy sheen. Movies No one wins with “Losers” By GLENN WHIPP Associated Press Deadly only in its dullness, the coma-inducing, comic-book-adapted action flick “The Losers” aims to serve as a placeholder until “Iron Man 2” arrives with the summer’s heavy artillery. That “The Losers” and its ragtag band of Special Forces operatives fail to achieve even that modest goal speaks to the filmmakers’ utter lack of imagination as well as the busy smugness with which they offer their smorgasbord of nothingness. What’s interesting about the movie has more to do with the people involved than the mess they’ve splattered mostly off screen. (The film’s PG-13 mixture of bloodless violence and unseen killings seems almost quaint now in the wake of the gonzo brutality seen in last week’s comic book headliner, “Kick-Ass.”) “The Losers” comes from the caffeinated DC/Vertigo comic series by writer Andy Diggle and artist Jock. Diggle calls the comics his “man-crush love letter to Shane Black,” the highly paid screenwriter behind the “Lethal Weapon” movies. That man-crush was likely shared by Peter Berg (“Hancock”), who adapted Diggle’s comic with writer James Vanderbilt (“Zodiac”), Berg’s collaborator on the 2003 tonguein-cheek jungle adventure “The Rundown.” These guys are capable writers, comfortable in the genre. So what happened? Instead of producing a heady homage to slick, ’80s action movies or a winking salute to Sam Peckinpah and his wild bunch of losers or even a faithful adaptation of a serviceable comic, Berg and Vanderbilt have watered down the material to the point of irrelevance. Each Loser has a single name (Clay, Cougar, Pooch, Jensen and Roque) and exactly one defining characteristic (in order named: brooder, cowboy hat guy, family guy, wacky T-shirt guy, brooder who doesn’t like the other brooder). The mission goes bad. A bunch of cute ragamuffins are killed in the

most perfunctory manner possible. The Losers get mad and vow revenge, going after the Americanflag-lapel-pin-wearing CIA “super spook (Jason Patric channeling Goldfinger) who engineered the betrayal. Director Sylvain White (“Stomp the Yard”) tries hard to give the thin material a kind of tossed-off casualness, hoping the explosions and heavy-metal

soundtrack will fill the empty spaces of the convoluted plot. It’s all noise, no substance. The line at the concession stand probably has more tension than what’s happening inside the theater. As the team’s leader, Jeffrey Dean Morgan comes off as a budgetversion George Clooney. Better is Chris Evans, cast against type as the nerdy computer specialist. Evans has a nice touch with the

recycled banter and delivers the movie’s funniest moment with a spot-on version of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Geek It Girl Zoe Saldana (“Avatar”) is on board, too, fighting, shooting, disrobing, usually at the same time. The movie’s one great image has Saldana silhouetted on top of a mountain of cargo containers, a missile launcher at the ready. What’s she doing here?

Freddy Krueger has grown stale By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge Everything old is new again. Or so I felt watching Freddy Krueger come back “to life” on a giant screen last Monday night. Could it really be twenty-six years since the disfigured slasher first crept into our hearts and minds-forever cementing Robert Englund as one of the most chilling actors alive? Remake-happy Hollywood finally decided that after giving Michael Myers, Jason Voorhies, and all those aliens that so troubled Ripley new adventures that it was time to launch their most bizarre brother into a refreshed spotlight. Nancy Holbrook (Rooney Mara, sister of Brokeback Mountain’s Kate Mara) is slipping into psychosis when her best friends (Katie Cassidy, Thomas Dekker, and Kellan Lutz) start to mysteriously perish by both unusual accident or public suicide. As she and boyfriend Quentin O’Grady (Veronica Mars’ Kyle Gallner) start to lose it, they look further into the shared history of the kids and find that

ROBERT’S RANKING: film two and a half stars out of four. they’re all having the same deadening dreams of a burn victim chasing them about. As we all already know, that victim is Fred Krueger, the mild-mannered gardener from their elementary school, run out of town and shown lynch mob-style justice by the parents of his tiny victims (Connie Britton and Clancy Brown, most notably). Fred might have been a nice guy, but he was also a monster. As monsters usually do in scary movies, they don’t go away for good. Englund, both sadly and famously, does

not play Freddy Krueger in this remake of “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” however. The part falls to the biggest, baddest, weirdo of our modern day, former child star Jackie Earle Hayley (“The Bad News Bears,” “Watchmen”). His take on the dream-stalking revengester is slickly-cool and terrifying. Freddy’s signature razor-tipped glove is frightening, but Hayley’s dialogue, and the signature voice with which he delivers it, is enough to scare the living daylights out of anyone. I can’t get some of lines he casts off out of my head (“Why are your screaming? I haven’t even cut you yet.”). Hayley has had a career reborn in the last five years, but I feel somewhat bad for him. A true Renaissance might have had him playing parts other than child molesters, murderers, or cloaked vigilantes. He has a knack for the skillful portrayal of wickedness, but is his mother proud of the credits he’s accumulating? “A Nightmare on Elm Street” is exceptionally brief and formulaic, something

all good horror films are. The hook between the bad ones and the great ones lies with how clever the short time between the setup and the payoff is designed. Hitchcock made it play like a slow burn throughout “Psycho.” Ridley Scott kept it all for the end of “Alien.” Wes Craven actually eliminates dénouement entirely from his films and makes the manner of the payoff what we breath for. Director of this remake Samuel Bayer doesn’t employ any of these methods and the movie is very stale. But I still wouldn’t tangle with that freaky dude in the red and green sweater. He’s totally crazy. On a side note, I saw this film at the Cinema Suites in downtown Kansas City’s Mainstreet Theatre. AMC has put together one of the most luxurious and pampered movie-going atmospheres in existence (reclining leather armchairs, waitress/ cocktail service). Don’t pass the opportunity by to experience this unique setting if you’re in the area. The premium cost is well worth the extravagance.

The Arts Artistic adventures SIUE alum to display work on campus Millions of people have seen the work of Gib Singleton, a Southern Illinois University Edwardsville graduate who may be best known for creating the crucifix atop the crosier of the late John Paul II during his time as Pope and now carried by Pope Benedict XVI. Singleton’s sculpture inspires in seemingly diverse locations, ranging from the Vatican Museum to the Cowboy Hall of Fame, and from the Holocaust Martyrs and Heroes Remembrance Authority to private collections around the world. For the first time, 28 of the artist’s works—representing religious, western, and contemporary subjects—will be on display at his alma mater in the exhibit, From the Earth, from Thursday, May 13th, through Sunday, June 27th in SIUE’s Morris University Center Gallery. A native Missourian, Singleton was raised in Granite City and attended SIU Carbondale before enrolling at SIUE. He attended classes at what was then known as the Alton Residence Center and then at Edwardsville when the main campus opened in 1965. He graduated two years later and went on to study at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Singleon’s efforts earned him a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the Accademia di Bella Arti in Florence, Italy. While there, he was made part of the team responsible for the restoration of Michelangelo’s Pieta, after it was damaged by a vandal in1972. Now 74, Singleton lives and works in Santa Fe, NM, where much of his art is on display at Galerie Zűger, and he just completed life-size representations of the 14 Stations of the Cross, which will be loaned to the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe for the next 25 years. The time is now for St. Louis parents to enroll their children in the Grand Center Arts Academy, the first and only performing and visual arts charter school in the state of Missouri. For the first year only, the tuitionfree charter school, located at 711 N. Grand Ave. in the heart of the thriving, vibrant arts center of the region, Grand Center, will be accepting 225 students for grades 6 and 7 on a first-come, firstserved basis. Enrollment will be conducted by a lottery system for all subsequent years. Students eligible to attend must be residents of the city of St. Louis or residents of St. Louis County and eligible to attend St. Louis Public Schools under the voluntary transfer program. All applicants will meet with Principal Lynne Glickert as part of the acceptance process. Once a student is accepted, he or she is guaranteed a spot in the Academy through high school graduation. The Academy will start with grades 6 and 7 this year and add a grade each subsequent year through grade 12 in 2015. Enrollment will be capped at that time at 750 students. After the 2010/2011 school year, students will be accepted by a lottery system. “We are trying to encourage parents to act now to enroll their c h i l d re n , b e c a u s e t h i s i s t h e only year that students can be guaranteed a spot,” said Glickert.

Dining Delights Lamb racks up fans with new cuts, attitude SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — There are fashions in meat, as in all things, but... Are you ready for lamb bacon? That’s just one of the new dishes popping up on menus across the country as chefs experiment with American lamb, a trend driven partly by a concerted effort on the part of producers to shake off lamb’s dated image. Fussy crown roasts topped by tricky little frilled caps — out. “Lamb Jams,” cooking contests featuring local chefs getting their grill on — in. “ We ’ re d e f i n i t e l y t r y i n g t o approach a whole new generation and make lamb more approachable,” said Megan Wortman, executive director of the Denver-based American Lamb Board. Why lamb now? New Hampshire sheep farmer Jeff Conrad sees the trend as riding the wave of eating local. “People want to know where their food’s coming from,” he said. Conrad, who with his wife, Liz, runs Riverslea Farm near Epping, has noticed an increase in people buying lamb cuts for everyday meals, as opposed to previous years when he sold mainly whole animals to families looking to have a party. “Ground lamb? We can’t even keep that around,” he said. For chefs, cooking with lamb is something new, giving them a chance to stretch creatively. And if you use the lesser-known cuts — such as the neck and belly — it also can be cheaper, good for budgetstretching, said Matt Accarrino, executive chef at SPQR in San Francisco. “I’ve been calling 2010 the year of the lamb,” he said with a laugh. “I’d rather have a lamb belly than a lamb

rack. Braised and glazed, long and slow-cooked — it’s a very versatile cut. It’s much less expensive than, say, the rib chops. You see a lot of people working with lamb neck.” Across the country, Mike Price, chef/owner of Market Table in New York City, has been selling more lamb and fewer steaks, “which I think is a good thing. I’m a big fan of lamb.” With its distinctive taste and slight gamey-ness, you don’t need a huge portion to make a statement, which also contributes to cost-effectiveness, said Price. Of course, in the wrong hands, that distinctive flavor can morph into something rather unpleasant. Accarrino can remember facing gray, tough roasts as a child, often accompanied by equally abused brussels sprouts. “You’ve got to let the lamb speak for itself,” agreed Price. “Overcooked is overcooked. It’s going to be dry and it’s going to be tough.” Lamb is showing up at the retail level, too, with more and different cuts available. Many supermarkets now regularly carry ground lamb, which can be the basis for some delicious burgers. “I feel like we’re definitely selling more lamb,” said Tia Harrison, coowner and butcher at Avedano’s Holly Park Market in San Francisco. A popular cut is the shoulder chop, something she has on the menu at Sociale, the restaurant she coowns. “Lamb goes beautifully with rosemary and garlic and olive oil.” Harrison gets her lamb from Sonoma Direct, a Northern California processing plant, where executive director Marissa Guggiana has noticed an increased acceptance of “some of the strange cuts,” partly

because local chefs are buying whole lambs. She’s seen a lot of lamb charcuterie, grilled lamb neck and also noticed that “lamb bacon is a chef-y kind of trend.” Lamb has a long way to go before it becomes a staple in the United States. On average, Americans consume only 1 pound per person annually, and one-third have never even tried it, according to Wortman. Compare that to federal figures from 2008 showing Americans on average ate about 61 pounds of beef, 59 pounds of chicken and 46 pounds of pork per capita. American lamb producers aren’t the only ones trying to boost lamb consumption. Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), which represents that country’s lamb industry, has been promoting lamb by way of magazine ads and events aimed at getting quick service restaurants and casual dining chains to consider lamb, said Steve Edwards, the group’s business development manager. “We want to try and get chefs to think outside of the rack, mainly because it’s probably the most expensive item of lamb you can get. Once they think the rack is too expensive for their menu, then they don’t think of lamb any further,” he said. The idea is to blend global methods of cooking lamb with American mainstream models, hence a lamb burger contest MLA is sponsoring with Plate magazine. Lamb also was the focus of a recent outing of the popular “Takedown” series, with 20 amateur chefs bringing their best stuff to The Bell House in Brooklyn. In a medium bowl, whisk together 2 tablespoons of the olive oil, the vinegar, red pepper flakes, dried oregano, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Carefully cut the meat from the bones, then add the meat to the bowl. Toss well to coat, then refrigerate for 15 minutes. Heat the grill to medium-high. Coat the grates with cooking spray. Dining Delights Joe’s Crab Shack Fairview Heights 2 1/2 stars Great fun, but for the price and what you get, not really a bargain. Wait staff sing and dance and very casual dining. Alfonzo’s Maryville 3 1/2 stars Food is awesome, especially the tomato basil pizza and their bread bites. Prices are a bit higher than you would expect to pay for a pizza dinner. Good for families with kids, they can play in the arcade while you are waiting on the food, just bring your wallet. Chevy’s Fresh Mex O’Fallon 4 1/2 stars One of my personal favorites, love their fresh salsa and chips. Also love their chicken fajita nachos. Portions are large and prices are very reasonable. Service has been great every time. Lone Star Steak House O’Fallon 4 stars Great steaks, seafood and chicken. Salads are good, including their Texas Ranch dressing. Of course they have “bloomin’ onions” and peanuts to munch on while you wait for your food. Fun atmosphere. Wasabi Edwardsville 4 stars Okay, I admit that I hesitantly give this four stars as I am not a lover of Sushi, nor am I an expert of Sushi. But, I have eaten their Shrimp Tempura, and have tasted some of their other dishes, all of which are very good. But those I went with love Sushi and claim that theirs is awesome. Service was very good and helpful. Buffet City Edwardsville 3 stars Huge selection of food. Chinese selections, American selections, both hot and cold. Some really good, some not so much. Dinner prices a little high if you are going as a family. Good service. Finn Inn Grafton 3 stars Fun ambiance with fish tanks built into the wall. Watch the fish while you eat. Lots of fish dishes, sandwiches, daily specials, etc. Good fish sandwich. Good service. Johnson’s Corner Alton 3 1/2 stars

Have best pork tenderloin sandwich in the world. Everything else is okay, but you won’t pay much. Service is fair. Tony’s Alton 3 stars Known for their pepperloin, they serve steaks, pasta, chicken. Prices are a bit high, so go for a special event. Dress is casual. Have outside dining also. Zia’s On the Hill-St. Louis 4 stars Their seafood stuffed mushrooms are fantastic. The appetizers alone are worth the visit. Veal, chicken, steaks, sandwiches are all offered. There homemade fresh pastas are some of the best. Average pasta dish about $12. Good service. NOW RE-OPENED-had closed for a few months due to fire, but now reopened-stop by and check out the new decor. Lorenzo’s Trattoria On the Hill-St. Louis 4 1/2 stars The tomato and fresh mozzerella salad is fantastic. The ambiance is perfect to go with another couple, a group or just two of you. Prices are a little high for a typical night out, but special event worthy. Specials most days. Try the salmon and portabella mushrooms over spinach tortellini.

Shogun Japanese Steak and Sushi Fairview Heights 4 stars Your choice of table side cooking or dining room setting. If you sit table side, you will share the grill with about 15 or so other people. You can order full dinners or ala carte. Sushi is also available. Fun place to go with a group of friends or just on a date. Captain’s Table Buffet 4 stars Argosy Casino-Alton Come hungry and wear loose fitting clothes. They have too many choices to mention, but enjoy their carved meats, pastas, side dishes and delectable desserts. Worth the trip and the money. Good stuff! RED Kitchen Hyatt Riverfront Chestnut and 4th St. St. Louis, Mo. 4 1/2 stars Specialize in “small plate” dishes, but have a number of full plate dishes. Order three or four small dishes as a couple and share each of the dishes. The “Seared Scallops” are like butter. The “Ahi Poki Wonton” is a great try! “Braised Short Ribs” can be cut with a fork-so tender. Signature cocktails and “mini” desserts. Great atmosphere. Pasta House Co.

Edwardsville 4 stars Still love their house salad, a St. Louis favorite for many years. Good pastas, steaks, and sandwiches. A little pricey for a family meal, but not terrible for a date or special night out. Their rolls are fantastic. Shenanigans Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars General bar and grill fare, wings, sandwiches, potato skins, etc. Have a few specialty dishes and drink specials. Offer indoor and outdoor dining. Good party type atmosphere with plenty of tv’s for sports watching. Cracker Barrel Troy 4 stars I know, everyone has eaten at Cracker Barrel, so who needs our opinion. But still is one of the best values for a family for a decent meal. You can have breakfast any time of the day. The service is generally top notch. Love the “down home” ambiance and the fireplace in the winter. Can’t beat a good Cracker Barrel!

54th Street Bar and Grill Edwardsville 4 stars Great menu selection, something for everyone. Prices are very reasonable and have not had a bad selection yet. Remember to get your frequent diner card stamped when ordering an entree so you can get one free when your card is full. Red Robin Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars The bottomless french fries are fantastic, but it basically is a pricey burger place. Service is not super speedy, but food was good and hot. Good group setting. Cold Stone Creamery Edwardsville 5 stars I really would give this more stars if we had them, but all we can give is five. I LOVE their ice cream concoctions, particularly the Cheesecake Fantasy or the Apple Pie A La Cold Stone. I really could put m o re s e l e c t i o n s h e re , b u t u s e your imagination!

Family Focus Celebs opt for unretouched photos MIAMI (AP) — Jessica Simpson is her usual pretty blonde self on the May cover of Marie Claire magazine. But where’s the makeup? She looks like a natural all-American beauty in unretouched photos that include her sitting in a grassy field running her hand through her air-dried locks and looking into the distance, the sun shining on her face. The spread makes her the latest brave celebrity (there aren’t many) who have been willing to be seen by a mass audience without the prerequisite beautification process. “I think she was at a place in her life where she felt comfortable doing it,” said the magazine’s editor-in-chief, Joanna Coles. While few are willing to go where Simpson has, more are popping up.

Kim Kardashian, Joy Bryant and Amanda de Cadenet all posed unretouched — and naked — for a story on body image in the May Harper’s Bazaar. Kardashian also went unretouched in a bikini on the cover of Life & Style last year. Claudia Schiffer posed for unmanipulated photos in the September 2009 issue of Tank, a British magazine. Unretouched shots of Britney Spears from a Candie’s ad surfaced recently on the Internet next to more buff images the company actually used. Marie Claire has asked many celebrities to go bare faced, but none had agreed, Coles said. Simpson was motivated by her VH1 show, “The Price of Beauty,” Coles said. The show had her traveling the globe with two friends

to examine standards of beauty around the world. “I think it changed the way she thought about things. I think making that show was really quite a profound experience for her,” Coles said. “There was something very liberating for her about doing this.” Simpson faced criticism for her weight after she wore a pair of high-waisted jeans that cut her in all the wrong places. She became a household name during “Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica” for MTV, a reality show with her then husband Nick Lachey. “I just think she’s an interesting person to do it with because she is usually so packaged,” Coles said. So few have gone unretouched that those who do earn notice, both positive and

negative. In the original photos of Spears, she looks a little heavier, with cellulite, a point not lost on some commenters at a blog of New York magazine. “I don’t think Britney should be hired or used for sex appeal anymore. You can sell her face alone, just do that,” said one signed MOBABY.
