Choose a Lawn Mower

There are many considerations when purchasing the right lawn mower. Answering some simple questions first to evaluate your particular needs may make your choices easier to manage. Lawn mowers come in such a variety of sizes, types, and price ranges that you should do some careful research before purchasing one. There are a whole range of things to consider, such as the kind and size of your lawn, what you can afford, how long the lawn mower will last, and even your mechanical abilities because all lawn mowers need some maintenance. The best way to begin your research is by taking a careful look at your lawn. If you are replacing your old mower, you probably already have a good idea of what will work for you. If you have just moved into a home, you need to know how many square feet of lawn you have. Do you have a lot or one or more acres to mow? This is important because recommendations for various mowers are partially based on lawn size. Walk behind mowers allow you to get some exercise as you mow. Do you prefer to use a self-propelled mower? What is your price range? What kind of transmission will you need? Manual or automatic? Automatic transmissions provide a much greater east-of-use and efficiency. Do you have the strength to pull the cord to start your mower or do you need an automatic starter? Consider the versatility of the equipment. Mulching—cuts grass clippings into fine pieces that can help fertilize your lawn. No bagging of clippings is required.

Rear bagger—collects clippings for an immaculate lawn. A rear bag is preferable to a side bag for use around fences, trees and other obstacles. Side discharge—clippings are dispersed back onto the lawn. Use if you have a few obstacles to deal with or to cut high grass. Riding lawn equipment for light duty with engine horsepower ranging from 10 to 25 HP is good for mowing grass, light grading, tilling and hauling smaller loads. Safety should be a critical factor in your purchasing decision. What systems can you rely on to keep you and others safe? There are rollover protective structures for larger equipment, operator presence system so that if you dismount your riding mower it will shut off. There are color coded levers on some units and safety interlock systems. There are some very well designed and safe products available. Remember, no matter which type of lawn mower you choose, be sure it has an automatic shutoff. If it tips over, the handle is disengaged or you dismount, it automatically shuts off. Service and Maintenance--What is included in your maintenance agreement and do you have one? Can you get service from the dealer after you buy your mower? Consider the versatility of the equipment. Besides mowing and perfecting the yard and lawn, what other tasks will you or would you like to use your mower to perform? Consider other task possibilities for your core tasks such as: • Light hauling such as mulch or dirt.

• Heaving hauling for larger loads or rocks. • Tilling/Plowing that tomato garden. • Fertilizing/Seeding the lawn or garden. • Grading your driveway. • Shrub removal. • Handling snow. • Tending to animals. It’s not always easy to get your mower annual maintenance. Maintaining your equipment leads to hassle free ownership, better resale value and less headaches in general. Some dealers offer mobile maintenance service. Service should include the following: • Change engine oil and filter. • Change air filter and -cleaner. • Change spark plugs. • Change fuel filter. • Change transmission oil and filter. • Change engine coolant. • Change hydraulic filter. • Sharpen mower blades. •  Check safety systems. • Check tire pressure and check mower desk level. •  Check/tighten hardware. • Clean engine, battery, radiator and mower. • Lubricate tractor and mower. • Check belts and mower adjustments. Choose a Remodeling Company

Renovating your home is a significant investment of time and money, but it can pay big dividends. When you’re shopping around for a home remodeling company, be patient and take your time. The right company will complete the project on time, on budget and on target. The wrong one may create an eyesore you're ashamed of. There are some guidelines that will help you choose the best company to work on your house. Determine what your project is really going to fix, build or replace, then hire the right remodeling team. While you wouldn’t hire a plumber to build a brick wall around your patio or a mason to unclog your drain, there are some times when you need the services of both working on the same project. A remodeling company with broad expertise is what you want. Hire a contractor you feel comfortable with, someone you can talk to honestly about different aspects of the project. The best ones follow your guidelines and provide feedback during the life of the job. You’re the customer and you have the money. On the other hand, the remodeler is the one with the skills you lack. Mutual respect is the foundation of a good working relationship. Finding a good remodeler often requires asking your friends and family about who they’ve hired in the past. Word of mouth is often more reliable than advertisements in the newspaper or on the Internet in finding the best remodeling company. Ask your potential remodeler to show you pictures of some of his past projects. He may even provide contact information for past customers eager to give him glowing testimonials. Make sure those testimonials don’t come from his mom and dad. You may also make inquiries through your state’s builders’ association, your town’s building code enforcement office or the Better Business Bureau. A remodeler with an unblemished customer service record is the one you need to call. Speaking of building codes, find out if your remodeler can file for any permits required for undertaking your renovation project. If he doesn’t, you have to do it yourself. The fact is it needs to be done. It’s just one of those things that need to be done to avoid paying hefty fines and starting the project over from scratch.

Be very specific about what you want. The more details you can give your remodeler, the better he can furnish you with an accurate cost estimate. Reputable ones offer you a written version. If yours doesn’t, you might want to reconsider your choice of remodeling company. Double-check the figures on the written estimate just to make sure nothing has been overlooked or misunderstood. Everybody makes mistakes, both you and the remodeler. A good remodeler will also be full of free advice about materials and construction techniques. Solicit his input about finishes, maintenance, ease of repairs, durability and similar factors. His familiarity with all renovation aspects can save you money and himself time. Read the terms of any warranties the company provides. Dealing with a company that stands behind its guarantees won’t leave you worrying about having that brand-new ceiling cave in during the first rainstorm. If it does, a remodeler with integrity will fix it quickly and without cost. Many times, the remodeler has shown superb workmanship, but the materials he was using were defective. He won’t make excuses and he won’t expect you to pay him to correct the problem. He’ll just show up, perhaps discuss a couple of details with you and then repair the damage. Details do get overlooked sometimes. Your remodeler may be halfway through a project, only to realize some important item has been left out. A good company will bring the oversight to your attention, remove any work that may interfere with installing the missing component and resume working on the rest of the job. It’s only money – but it’s your money. Why pay twice for something? A good reliable home remodeler is worth his weight in gold. Make him part of your decision-making team before the first plank is laid and the first nail is sunk. Rely on a reputable remodeler to perform quality craftsmanship that will help make your home a showcase in the years to come.

How to. . .

Choose a Medical Spa

Skin care products and procedures, like laser services and injectables, are increasingly popular alternatives to costly and invasive surgeries with weeks of downtime and often times visible scarring. We commonly hear buzz words like anti-aging, med-spa and skin rejuvenation. The options are many and the path to choose can be daunting. Here are some suggestions to help guide you in the right direction! Medical Spa vs. Spa? Is there a difference? And what does it all mean? Spas and salons commonly specialize in services for hair styling, facials, waxing, nail services and massage. Professionals working in spa and salons are licensed through their state board of cosmetology. Regardless of how highly trained, qualified and knowledgeable these professionals may be, there is a limit to the type of services or products they can offer in a spa or spa-like environment. A Medical Spa, also called Med-Spa, is a hybrid between a Medical Clinic and a Day Spa that operates under the supervision of a Medical Doctor. Medical Spas offer more results-oriented treatments like injectables to manage wrinkles, laser treatments such as Laser Hair Removal, Vein Removal, Skin Resurfacing and Rejuvenation, Brown Spot Removal and Skin Tightening treatments that cannot be treated at all or as effectively by a traditional aesthetician. More importantly, these treatments produce amazing antiaging results allowing one to delay the knife. Medical Spas are also known for offering Medical-Grade Skin Care, light to medium depth Chemical Peels, Medical Microdermabrasions, Dermaplaning Exfoliation, in addition to relaxing facials and massages. You may also find unique services like Microcurrent, which is known as the "Non-Surgical Facelift". It is a painless procedure that regenerates tissue in the face and neck while firming and toning, giving the face and neck a lifted appearance! Some Medical Spas have a Wellness focus and include services like Acupuncture, Weight Loss and Nutritional Counseling and even Chiropractic Care for a holistic approach to Anti-Aging and Wellness. In a Medical Spa, the equipment is Medical Grade, meaning a higher grade that can provide increased results than what is typically found in a Day Spa. Again, Medical Spas are geared towards providing you with results, they will help you achieve your goals whether it be to reduce wrinkles, improve the texture of your skin, or treat acne all the while achieving the ultimate goal which is to LOOK YOUNGER!

One of the most popular treatments often found in medical spas is injectables such as Botox and Dermal Fillers. Knowing your providers' background, training, and experience is key when considering where and who you should trust with such procedures. Injectables are a form of art, your provider should have a natural artistic ability and you should ALWAYS feel that your treatment, no matter what it may be, is customized to your anti-aging or rejuvenating goals! Definitely consider the experience and continual training of the staff as well. Medical Spas specialize in the treatments that they offer and receive regular training and continuing education on all products and procedures that they offer so that the staff is current on the latest practices and protocols. We've all heard a beauty horror story, whether it's a haircut gone awry or Botox gone bad! And it's not fun for anyone. In the event there is a mishap in a Medical Spa, you will wish you had researched the on-site physician. Wait, what?!? There's no on-site physician?! Uh oh! Does a doctor own the facility but live in another state? Yes, these situations do exist! Not only should the Medical Spa have an on-site physician, you should feel that the facility as well as the physician personally takes the utmost care and time with each and every patient. This is, after all, a key building block in choosing a reputable and trustworthy Medical Spa! In any instance, you should always do your research and ask questions. Be a welleducated consumer! Also, don’t focus solely on cost, try not to choose a Medical Spa because it offers a lower price, a lot of times you get what you pay for. And, don't be pressured into a "hard-sell" or intimidating environment. A quality facility will value you as a patient, giving you the best service and care. Still confused? Get a consultation! Most facilities offer free or low-cost consultations so that you can ask questions, get a tour and ultimately get a "feel" for the place. It's your money, your body, and your future. Don't you want to look and FEEL great in it?!

Choose Maternity Care

Finding out you are pregnant can be a very exciting time, but it can be filled with anxiety as well. Pregnant women have so many decisions to make. One of the first decisions you’ll be faced with is also one of the most important ones: choosing a maternity care provider. If you already have a gynecologist you like, find out if he or she is also an obstetrician. This means your doctor will be able to deliver babies and perform surgery such as a c-section should the need arise during birth. If so, you are in luck. But for most people, the decision is a little more complicated. The best way to find good maternity care is through word of mouth. Check with friends or family members who have given birth recently and inquire about their experiences. Most people will have a strong opinion about the quality of their maternal care one way or the other, so don’t be afraid to ask. In particular, try to talk to people who had complicated pregnancies or births. If you are new to the area, you can ask your primary care physician for recommendations. You will want to make a list of the doctors that are recommended to you and then check with your insurance to see if those particular doctors are covered. Once you have narrowed down your list of potential doctors, you should make an appointment with the top two or three. Consider this first appointment to be like an interview or audition. Observe everything. Is the staff friendly? Is there a long wait? Is the office clean? Do you get an overall good feeling about the doctor? One important question to ask is what the doctor’s c-section rate is. Sometimes doctors get a reputation for performing c-sections when they are not necessarily needed. Using a doctor isn’t your only option when it comes to prenatal care. Many women turn to a midwife for their maternal care. A midwife is specially trained in pregnancy and childbirth and tends to give more personal care. Some women report feeling more comfortable using a midwife. If you are a person who likes minimal medical intervention, this may be a good choice for you. In some cases you can even give birth at home. Keep in mind that a midwife is not a

doctor, so if your pregnancy or birth runs into complications, you will end up needing to go to a hospital. Whether you choose a doctor or midwife, find out if he or she will be available when it’s time to give birth. Make sure no vacations are scheduled around your due date if you are set on having him or her be the one to deliver your baby. Find out what happens if he or she is not available when you go into labor. Some ob/gyns work at a practice with other doctors who take turns being on delivery duty. If this is the case with your doctor, try to schedule some of your prenatal checkups with the other doctors in the practice so you won’t have a complete stranger delivering your baby. Another thing to keep in mind when choosing your care provider is which hospital they are associated with. Ask around to find out what reputation the maternity wings in your area hospitals have and make sure that the doctor you choose has credentials to deliver at the hospital of your choice. It’s best to choose a hospital with a good neonatal unit in case your baby is born prematurely. You should also make an appointment to visit the hospital before giving birth to tour the facilities. Ask them which incidentals will be provided (such as bottles, sanitary pads, etc.) and which items you should pack in your hospital bag. Ask to see the post-partum recovery rooms and find out if the room will be shared if this is important to you. Find out what the hospital’s policy is regarding having your newborn stay in your room with you. Checking out the facilities beforehand can help reduce anxiety about giving birth. Having a baby is a thrilling yet tumultuous time in a woman’s life. Taking the time to choose a good maternity care provider can make the difference between a smooth pregnancy and one filled with added stress.

Make your Carpet Selection

Floor carpeting is a great way to set the decorating tone for a room. It also provides warmth and protection for your family and pets. With the literally hundreds of choices available, it is possible to find the perfect carpet to fit your family's lifestyle and budget. Carpeting is a relative long-term purchase, and you should expect your carpeting to last for years. So, it is important to choose wisely as you will be living with your choice for many years to come. In order to choose the best carpet for your home, you should consider a number of things. This will insure that you get the best value for your investment. 1. Consider the pros and cons of wall-to-wall carpeting versus purchasing area rugs. Wall-to-wall carpeting tends to be the most popular choice. However, since it is installed, it is permanent. It also tends to be more costly as you have the cost of padding and installation added to the cost of the actual carpet. Area rugs can be picked up and cleaned. They can be moved, rearranged and may be a better choice if you have pets, kids or high traffic areas. You can literally “turn” the carpet to insure more even wear. Lastly, if you re-locate frequently, you might want to consider an area rug. 2. Consider how much you can afford to spend on carpeting. Quality carpeting will last longer, wear better and be more stain resistant, so it is wise to choose the best carpeting you can afford. When determining cost for an area rug, measure the room and determine how much, if any, of the bare floor you want exposed. Area rugs tend to come in standard sizes, 5x8 or 9x12, etc. There are some beautiful area rugs, patterned or solid, available at reasonable prices. When calculating the cost of wall-to-wall carpeting, bear in mind that it too comes in standard widths. If you have an especially large or odd shaped room, you may have waste or seams.

If you feel you are unable to get an accurate estimate yourself, bring the dimensions to the carpet store and let them do the estimate and discuss possible seams. Most carpet stores will give precise estimates for free or at a low cost. 3. Consider the color and texture that will most suit your needs. You might wish to create a warmer feel, lighten a dark room or match existing décor. When you find a carpet you think is suitable, take a sample home to determine whether it is actually what you are looking for. 4. Consider your options with respect to where you purchase your carpeting. You can purchase carpeting from large box stores, warehouses and small niche carpet dealers. Each has its benefits and drawbacks. You can even purchase carpeting online. Generally the store with the lowest cost will also have the most limited services. Some smaller suppliers will bring samples to your house and do some measurements before quoting a price. It is wise to visit a number of showrooms and ask a lot of questions. Small flooring stores will tend to put their focus on service. They may offer discounts for ongoing services after the sale such as carpet cleaning and stain resistance protection. One advantage of big box stores is that they often have financing plans. These warehouse stores often offer a package deal that includes not only carpeting but also padding and installation. However they tend to have limited and relative bland options. They offer low prices because they buy a few standard type carpets and buy a lot of them. Whether you ultimately purchase your carpeting from a large warehouse outlet, a bigbox store, or a small local retail outlet, take your time to learn about the newest carpet options and make your decision based on your family's needs. If you follow these guidelines, you will be happy with your purchase for years to come.

Choose an Employment Service

How to Choose an Employment Service Finding a job with today’s economy is very tough. Many people are turning to employment services to assist them in that search. Employment services can connect people who just need a short term job to help with presents at Christmas time or help an executive land a new job. It really is all up to you. 1. Types of Employment Services The first step in choosing the right employment service is to understand what type of service can help you the most. Employment services fall into four different types. The most popular service is a private placement service which works to bring job seekers to employees who are looking to hire. The expected outcome from this service is that the correct employee is found for the company. Other employment services are temporary help services. They exist to fill voids when employers need additional employees for short periods of time. These are particularly popular with retailers for the holiday season and for landscapers for the summer season. The third type of employment service are retained search firms. These firms help specialized companies find highly qualified candidates for specific jobs. Sometimes these employment services are known as executive head hunters. Many employment agencies have one or two vocations as a specialty, and you want to make sure that your particular interests fall within this realm so that the service will be able to provide you the most benefit. 2. Research what Skills the Employment Service Offers The second step in choosing the right employment service is to find one that offers the services that you need. Look for one that will help you assess your strengths and weaknesses. There are several tests which employment services can use to assist in this process, but nothing replaces an in-person interview.

Also look for in an employment service that will help the potential employee put together a resume. These resumes can be done in various ways, and the employment agency should help the candidate assess which is the best format for them. Additionally, look for an employment service that offers classes to train the potential candidate to interview better. Some of these classes may be held in person. Other classes may be held online. Still other classes may be delivered as a newsletter in the mail or in emails. Look for an employment service that offers a high success rate. The service should be able to give references of people that they have helped in the past. They should also be able to show you how they are actively searching for jobs that meet potential employees skills and interests. 3. Contact the Service The third step in choosing the right employment service is to contact the service. Ask them about how they are paid. Some services are paid by the future employer. Others are paid by the employee upfront and still others are paid by government grants. Make sure that you understand how the employment service will be paid before they do work for you. 4. Interview The fourth step is to set up an in-person interview. This will allow you to ask any questions you have about their services. It will also allow you to sign up for their classes and resume services. 5. Find a Job The last step is to let the employment service assist you in finding a great job. Finding a legitimate employment service should not be overly difficult, but you should still take your time when trying to find the right one for you. While jobs are not easy to find, employment services offer great assistance in doing so. Make sure to choose the type of employment service that will help you the most. Then get busy finding that great new job. Your future success depends on you starting today.

Choose a Flooring Dealer

It is important to choose the right kind of flooring for your home. You want something that is not only going to look good, but that is also durable. There are many different materials to choose from such as bamboo, carpet, hardwood, laminate, stone and tiling, and that is just a mere sample. However, for someone who is not familiar with the industry, shopping for flooring can be an overwhelming experience. With so many types of materials, it may be difficult to make this decision on your own. The best way to ensure that you are getting the right flooring is by choosing an experienced flooring dealer, especially one that is familiar with all of the various brands and types available. A good dealer will help you to determine the flooring material best suited to your needs. Money may be tight and consumers are concerned with the prices of the products they are choosing for their home. This is not one of those cases where it pays to be overly frugal. When selecting flooring and a respective dealer, one must think about the long term. You need to make sure that you are getting the best value possible. It is always nice to find a great product at a great price, but what if something happens in 10 years and you have no warrant on which you can rely? Even worse is the possibility that the installers might screw up the job and leave your flooring permanently damaged. Another important factor to consider is the types of additional services and support that a floor dealer can offer. This is where customer service plays a crucial role. Your choice of flooring dealers should be based on the services they provide in the long-term. If you can, it’s best to find a locally based dealer with a track record of great customer service. It’s worth it to spend extra money on flooring, from a flooring dealer you can trust. You are buying more than just flooring; you are building a relationship that comes with a guarantee for your product.

When picking out what flooring dealer you want to use, the first instinct of most is to search using the Internet or the local phone book. Remember that phone book ads are paid for; larger ads will go to the companies with the larger budgets. Money is all it takes to advertise, so these ads are no sign of the kind of service you will receive. The Internet can also be misleading when it comes to searching for qualified floor dealers. One should be wary of the top search engine results, as these don’t necessarily mean that the dealer is reputable. Instead, it simply means that their website is ranked highly, which can happen for various reasons that aren’t based on their service. Be sure to read any consumer review websites with a discerning eye. These reviews sites can be decent, but anything read online should be taken with caution. One route is to draw up a list of potential flooring dealers you are considering, and give each of them a call. You can ask if they can provide any referrals to former customers for references. Find out what installation services they use and how reliable they are; they may use contractors or an in-company group. Also, inquire about their warranty coverage and the guarantees they offer on their flooring. Finally, you can check with your local Better Business Bureau or Chamber of Commerce for any complaints against the business, or lack thereof. While shopping around, chances are you might find that local dealers can offer comparable or lower prices, and a better variety of materials, than the larger chain stores. Overall, most people have better experiences using a flooring dealer that has been in business for many years.

Choose a Birthing Center

As a new mother, you have enough things on your mind without having to worry about choosing a birthing center. However, this is one decision that will have a big impact on your labor. Compared to traditional hospital labor and delivery wards, birthing centers offer cozy environments like home that welcome families and friends. IVs are not hooked up until actually needed; Cesarean sections are not performed needlessly; and the entire labor experience becomes more personal. To choose the best birthing center for you and your baby, keep the following factors in mind. 1. Licensing The nice part of giving birth in a licensed maternity hospital is that you already know that staff members are trained well and adequate supplies are always on hand. Accreditation Make sure your prospective birthing center is accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Birth Centers (CABC). In order to qualify, centers must meet standards in these areas: • Quality of Services • Planning • Organization • Staffing and Personnel • Administration • Facility, Equipment and Supplies • Evaluation of Quality Care • Health Records • Research Birthing centers accredited by the CABC generally have licensed nurses and midwives on hand. Some centers only permit the father or just one other visitor to stay with the mother, while others allow more friends and family during birth.

6. Amenities Birth centers frequently offer water births with Jacuzzis, bathtubs, or showers. Other tools such as stools, birthing balls and other items are usually available too. Some hospitals are moving toward offering these to pregnant women, but it's best to tour both birthing centers and hospitals so you can see exactly what you would be getting. Finally, take the time to meet the staff and tour the center. The staff's demeanor, the decor and the general layouts all contribute to an overall feel of the place, and you want to make sure you feel comfortable there. Do your homework and research several potential birthing centers. Find a place that feels homey; this isn't just where you'll labor, but it's also the first world that your precious newborn will experience.

How to. . .

Recognize signs of a Heart Attack

Signs of a heart attack vary by sex. However, if you think you are having a heart attack at any time, stop whatever you are doing and have someone call 911. Seconds are vital when treating a heart attack. MEN Severe Chest Pain For men, the first sign of a heart attack is often chest pain that lasts several minutes. While everyone experiences minor chest pain from time to time, a person having a heart attack will feel severe chest presure. This pressure will sometimes travel from the chest to the shoulder area, arms and back. Most ordinary chest pain passes when you force yourself to relax. The chest pain from a heart attack will not go away. Normally, it will intensify with the passage of time. Shortness of Breath The man who is having a heart attack will have a shortness of breath. It will feel like he has run a marathon when he is totally out of shape. The shortness of breath can be so severe that the man can feel like he will vomit at any moment. The man will often feel like he has instantly developed the worst flu of his life. Dizzy The man who is having a heart attack will often feel dizzy. This is caused by lack of air in the body, especially to the brain. The man who is having a heart attack may get so short of breath that he faints.

Teeth and Jaw Pain Interestingly, researchers have found that most men who have a heart attack will feel intense pain in his teeth and jaw. Again this pain will rate 7 or above on a pain scale of 10. Cold Sweats The man who is having a heart attack may experience cold sweats. These sweats usually leave the man feeling cold and clamy. Frequent Burps The man having a heart attack may also burp frequently. The heart attack causes acid reflux, and this makes the man need to burp. Yawning The man having a heart attack may feel the need to yawn frequently. The heart is not moving enough blood through the body, which results in the need to yawn. WOMEN The signs of a heart attack in women are harder to diagnose. Women are also sometimes not as quick to be diagnosed by a physician. Therefore, it is very important to understand the differences between how a man feels when he is having a heart attack and a woman feels when she is having a heart attack. Chest Pressure Like men, a woman having a heart attack will often feel chest pain. However, the chest pain is often lower. This leads some women to feel that the discomfort is coming from their stomachs rather than their chest.

Shortness of Breath Almost six out of ten women who are having a heart attack feel that they are short of breath. Like men, this will cause the woman to want to rest, which will lessen the symptoms in some cases. Extreme Fatigue The woman having a heart attack will feel unusually tired. They just can not seem to get enough rest. In fact, this extreme fatigue can proceed a heart attack by several weeks. The woman will feel like she just can not get enough sleep. Back Pain Men will seldom complain about back pain when having a heart attack. Women on the other hand will often experience severe back pain. Nausea Many women who are having a heart attack will feel like they need to vomit. Doctors do not fully understand this feeling in women. Many women will in fact vomit when they are having a heart attack. It is important to know the difference between men and women when they are having a heart attack. Knowing these signs can save a life. Seconds really do count, so make sure and follow through by seeking emergency treatment immediately. Call 911 if in doubt. If treatment is not sought, though, lasting damages may be inevitable.

How to. . .

Choose an HVAC Company

An old, inefficient heating and air conditioning system adds to your monthly costs. Air conditioners are rated on a seasonal energy efficiency ration or (SEER). The higher the SEER rate, the more efficient the unit is. Older equipment installed before 1990 can have a SEER rating of only nine or 10. The minimal SEER rating that is permitted to be sold now is 13. • What is the most efficient type of system to use? Geothermal energy is recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency as the most energy efficient system on the market. Installation of a geothermal system is the equivalent of planting 750 trees or taking two cars off the road. • How does geothermal energy work? Think of your lawn as a constant, renewable source of heating, cooling and water heating for your home. The earth absorbs almost 50 percent of all solar energy and remains nearly constant. Working with an underground loop system, geothermal heating and cooling systems utilize this constant temperature to exchange energy between your home and the earth as needed for heating and cooling. It’s environmentally friendly. In the winter, heat from the earth is carried to the geothermal unit. In the summer, the system expels heat from your home into the cooler earth via the loop system. As far as safety issues are concerned, there are no flames, no fumes, no flues, and no threats of carbon monoxide. It’s safe...no combustible gas! There are several loop configurations available. They can either be vertical, horizontal, or submerged in a nearby pond or lake. A water well can be used in many cases. Your energy dealer can help you determine the type of loop best suited for your property.

Geothermal energy is designed to operate quietly. There is no outdoor unit to disturb your landscaping. This is a flexible system to fit any home whether it’s new construction or an existing structure, large or small. Geothermal energy can be used with an all electric system or a dual fuel gas and electric system. Using a geothermal system, a typical home can save up to 60 percent over a conventional system...the lowest operating cost available. Currently household energy consumption is responsible for nearly 20 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions. Geothermal technology can provide a viable and cost effective solution to reduce this environmental hazard. • If I don’t have room in my yard to place a loop, what else can I do? A dual fuel system using a high efficiency gas furnace with an air to air heat pump is a good choice. • Why would I want a dual fuel system? Consider the economic balance point. This is the point at which it is most economical to use electric energy and the point at which it is most economical to switch to gas. This is based upon the rise and fall of electric and gas energy rates. • What are other points I should discuss with my heating and cooling contractor? Be sure your contractor is well trained and experienced. Request a load calculation to determine the equipment size your home will require. Ask the contractor to inspect ductwork for leaks, incomplete connections and compatibility with the rest of your system. Leaks should be fixed using a quality duct sealant. In some cases, ducts might need to be modified to ensure proper supply and return airflow.

Spread the Word: Mammograms Save Lives view before repositioning for the next x-ray.

Mammograms are one of the best tools available for catching breast cancer early — when it’s most treatable. According to the Centers for Disease Control, screening mammograms can reduce breast cancer deaths by approximately 20 to 35 percent in women 50 to 69 years of age and approximately 20 percent in women 40 to 49 years old. With numbers like that, why is it that so many women are skipping this potentially lifesaving test?

Breast compression may cause some discomfort for a brief time during each x-ray, but it should not be painful. Breast compression helps obtain better x-rays by: • Flattening the breast so that the maximum amount of tissue can be examined.

On the Decline

• Allowing a lower x-ray dose to be used since the x-ray beams pass through a thinner amount of tissue.

While researchers don’t know exactly why fewer women are getting mammograms, they believe many factors play a role, including a growing number of women without health insurance, increasing out-of-pocket medical expenses, and perhaps confusion about the effectiveness of mammography – or even fear of the test itself.

When choosing a mammography facility, keep these key points in mind: make sure the facility is accredited by the American College of Radiology, that the facility has a quick turn-around time on their reports and offers a convenient, friendly environment.

HOW IS A MAMMOGRAM PERFORMED?

For additional information on breast health, call the American Cancer Society at 800-ACS-2345.

Patients will be asked to undress above the waist for the examination and will be given a wrap to wear during the mammogram. The technologist will then position each breast, one at a time, on the mammography equipment. The breast will be compressed, and the x-ray will be taken.

Remember, a mammogram is your best defense against breast cancer. Each x-ray will appear on the technologists computer screen, and she will be able to make sure each image shows the right

Teach Your Kids to Budget Wisely

Learning about banking at an early age can play an important role in a child’s future financial success. A children’s savings account is designed for a young age group as a way to teach them to budget money for spending, saving, and sharing. Search for a bank that will charge only a small fee to open a youth account with little or no minimum daily balance requirement and no monthly service charge. Good savings habits begin at a young age. A youth savings account makes it fun for children of all ages to learn about saving while developing the basic skills needed for making sound financial decisions as an adult. Look for youth accounts that offer fun incentives or features to help children become familiar with the bank and how a savings account works: • Free gifts for simply opening an account.

• Share personal stories about saving money to reach a goal, like buying a first bicycle or a first car. • Discuss your family’s ideas about the rewards of giving to others.

• A savings register and deposit slips imprinted with the child’s name. • A cash reward for every inch they grow.

• Offer examples such as supporting your local school or place of worship.

• Children’s social events.

• Help your children set realistic goals for spending on a much desired object, rather than “blowing” their money on something frivolous.

• Prize drawings. • Special identification cards identifying the child as an account holder. The youth account can help parents teach their children about money management in a fun, casual way. Here are some tips to get the conversation started:

Encourage budgeting at an early age by making financial management part of your every day family life. Praise your children for saving money, and encourage them to continue. Explain how their savings will grow as interest is compounded and added to their account. With a youth account, children can begin building a savings habit that will last a lifetime.

How to. . . Select the Best Retirement Community for your Needs Today's retirees want a lot more than rocking chairs. As more Americans remain active in retirement, they are looking for communities that match their lifestyles and goals for relaxed living. When deciding on a retirement community, a series of factors should be taken into consideration, including the price, amenities and activities offered. Parking is another key factor to weigh when choosing a retirement community. Because most people enjoy having family and friends visit, ample parking is a necessity. If parking is tight, visitors may be less frequent. Therefore, parking is something every retiree should examine before making a financial commitment to a retirement living facility. COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES These days, senior citizens are more active and health conscious than ever before. Many want to keep their activity levels high during their retirement years. Thus, it is important to research whether such activities are easily accessible at any prospective retirement community. Many seniors also enjoy participating in arts and crafts, board games, dancing and other organized activities. Taking part in a wide range of social activities can provide a tremendous opportunity for retirees to make new friends, so pay attention to what social events are organized by the retirement community. It is also useful to research whether prospective retirement communities provide opportunities for residents to venture further on organized trips to theaters, museums and other events. MEDICAL CARE FACILITIES It is advisable to conduct research prior to choosing a facility so that you know the location of the closest hospitals, doctors, ambulance services and other health professionals. You may wish to restrict your search to communities located near your preferred physician or other service providers. It is wise to search for communities with a formal emergency plan in place. Additionally, check the retirement unit itself to see if it has custom features meant to ensure safety such as railings in

the bathroom and in the entranceways. PET POLICIES If you have a pet that you do not want to leave behind, this is another feature to consider when investigating potential retirement communities. Some facilities will allow you to bring your pet to live with you while others will not. Additionally, a park or a dog walking area nearby would be of great benefit to you and your pet, particularly if your animal is one that requires daily exercise. CHURCHES, LIBRARIES AND SCHOOLS People typically prefer to live in less congested, quiet areas during their retirement years. Because of this, you should research how close the community is to schools, sports facilities and other sites which regularly produce large traffic volumes and noise levels. You should also know where the nearest libraries and churches are located, as well as where you can access public transportation such as trains and buses. You will also want to ask whether the retirement community provides its own transportation for local trips. Some communities have their own fleet of minivans and buses for the purpose of providing local transportation. This is extremely helpful for seniors who no longer drive, do not have access to a vehicle or simply need to do some routine personal shopping. THE COMMUNITY When selecting a retirement community, it makes sense to talk with current residents to get a feel for their level of satisfaction with the neighborhood. Ask questions about their experiences since moving into the community and seek candid reviews of the amenities and staff. Above all, it is important to feel confident that you have selected a retirement community that is the best fit for your personal needs and lifestyle. By taking the time to research multiple facilities, you can be sure to find more than just a place to live. You can find a warm, welcoming community in which you will build lasting friendships and where you can get the support you need to thoroughly enjoy your retirement.

Choose a Music Store

You’ve decided that you want to buy a new a guitar or drumkit. Okay. Now what? Because a musical instrument is an investment in both money and time, you need to find guidance. Lots of places sell guitars and drums but where do you find the guidance you need. Are you even aware of what you need? Once you are serious about investing your time and money in learning to play an instrument you need to find a good music store that offers you selection, quality, experience and price. Selection Does the store have a wide variety of guitars and drums to chose from? Do they have several choices at different levels of experience (beginner, intermediate or professional)? Do they have used instruments that suit your needs? And if you buy for a beginner, will they take a trade in when you are ready for a more advances model? The more you have to choose from the better equipped you will be to make the correct decision. Experience

Consider product knowledge as well. Is the sales staff knowledgeable and informed about the productds they are selling? Do they have a “real world” experience with them? You need to be comfortable and confident about what you are buying and who you are buing it from. Price While price is important, it should not be the deciding factor. Most local music stores have more flexibility than chain stores and can often you as good a price, if not better, than you can get at a big box store or on the Internet. Consider service as well as price. If something needs to be fixed is the store able and qualified to take of it in house? Does the price quoted include a warranty? If so, what is covered by the warranty and what isn’t. Part of the price of learning to play a musical instrument is lessons. Does this store provide lessons and at what price? Commitment

How much actual experience with music does the store you have chosen have? A chain store maay not give you the same guidance that you would receive from an independently owned store. How much actual musical experience does the sales staff have? Do they have knowledge of all the equipment in the store? Can they answer all your questions? Have they actually used the equipment they are trying to sell you? The more hands on experience a sales person has the more guidance you will receive for them.

How committed to the music industry is this store that you have chosen? Is this just a job or are they committed to keeping music appreciation alive. Do they help local schools? Music is an art form. There should be a feeling of true interest in keeping that art form alive and growing through future generations. This type of commitment is usually found in your local music store. Choose a Pediatric Doctor

Choosing a pediatrician can be a difficult task for even the most seasoned parents. There are so many doctors to choose from that it can be hard to know where to begin. You want someone who is not only knowledgeable but also personable so that your child will feel comfortable visiting the doctor. Many children have anxiety about going to see a doctor, so it’s important to choose a pediatrician that your child will like. Here are some tips to make the process easier. 1. Gather potential names The first thing you will want to do when choosing a pediatrician is to gather some recommendations. Ask family, friends, and acquaintances about their children’s doctors. You could also ask your family doctor or the ob/gyn for recommendations. Be sure to consult with your insurance provider to find out which pediatricians are covered under your policy. This is very important because children visit the doctor much more frequently than adults as they tend to catch a lot of viruses while building up their immunity. Go online to see if the doctor is in good standing with the state medical board and if there have been any disciplinary actions or criminal charges. In Missouri: www.pr.mo.gov/healingarts.asp In Illinois: www.idfpr.com/dpr/WHO/med.asp 2. Schedule a prenatal interview Once you have narrowed down your doctor list, arrange a visit so you can discern who is the best option for you and your child. Rule out any doctor who is too busy to

meet with you for an interview, as this is not a good sign. You will want a doctor who makes care available because emergencies can crop up with children at all hours. Look for a doctor whose office is close to your home. You will probably go often during the early years, so it’s important to choose a doctor who is located near your home. Find out the office’s sick policy. Will someone at the office be available if you need to come in without an appointment? Ask if there is a “well child” waiting area. Many pediatricians now offer these separate waiting areas for children who are not sick. For example, if your child is getting a checkup, he or she won’t have to sit near the children who are visiting because they are sick, thus minimizing the chances of catching a virus. Choosing a pediatrician doesn’t have to be hard if you have a good strategy. The time spent investigating potential doctors now can save you a lot of trouble in the future. It’s worth putting forth lots of effort so you won’t have to change doctors later. Things to consider: Office location and hours Board certified pediatricians? Accepting new patients? Who handles sick calls? Who sees my child when he/she is sick? Accepts your insurance plan?

Choose the Perfect Kitchen

If you want to boost the resale value of your home, you cannot go wrong with a kitchen remodel. Whether you are a novice cook or can hold your own with the world’s top chefs, you can enjoy the benefits of a renovated kitchen. Because the remodel process can be an intimidating one, many home owners tend to shy away from kitchen makeovers. Never fear. Hiring a qualified, trustworthy contractor can turn your kitchen remodel into a fairly simple task. The key is to decide what you want and find someone that can deliver. Begin your search for a contractor by contacting several kitchen remodeling companies in your area. If you purchase cabinets and appliances from your local home improvement, big-box store they will provide a licensed contractor to do the work for you. To find the right contractor for your project, invite several into your home to provide you with quotes. These estimates should be based on the total extent of work that needs to be done. Any contractor that you interview should be more than happy to provide a quote for their work. If you meet with any professional who is hesitant to give you a quote in writing, mark them off of your short list and look for someone more forthcoming. At times, the work involved in a kitchen remodel requires the experience of a sub-contractor. Knowing whether this is or is not necessary can be difficult. Chances are if you receive the same information from several different professionals, you can trust the advice. An important detail of any estimate is the approximate amount of time it will take to complete the project. All of the contractors that you interview should be able to finish the project in roughly the same amount of time. Any contractors that vary greatly from the general time frame can be eliminated from your list.

Once you have created a short list of contractors, check each individual’s or company’s references to ensure their status as a reputable professional. Speak directly to anyone who has hired these contractors, if possible, and ask about the quality of work provided and the dependability of the company. If the contractors you are considering are unable to provide you with references and their contact information, perform an Internet search to gain valuable feedback from past customers. Once you have decided upon a single contractor or kitchen remodeling company, inform them of your decision and ask to view the contract. The contract should specifically list any task involved in the kitchen remodel, including its cost and time for completion. Before putting your name on the dotted line, ask for proof of the company’s licensure. Be sure that the company has current accident insurance coverage. If they do not, any accidents that occur on your property may haunt you later in the way of financial responsibility. If sub-contractors will be utilized, they should be under the umbrella of the head contracting company. If they are not, separate written contracts may be necessary. Check into the sub-contractors just as you would the head contractor: check references, licensure and insurance coverage. Choosing a contractor for your kitchen remodel is an important task. Finding someone who can remain within a given budget and complete the job in a timely manner will go a long way in ensuring your satisfaction with the end result.

How to. . . Select and Save on your Heating & Cooling Systems When should I replace my existing heating and cooling unit(s)? The time frame to replace an existing unit would be anywhere from 15-20 years old. Also, when replacing a unit (heater or air conditioner), it’s not necessary to replace both units when just one fails. In most cases it depends on the age of the equipment, most often the air conditioner will fail before the furnace. Choosing the correct company to install the equipment is just as important as choosing the right equipment. A poorly installed high efficient system can be less efficient than a properly installed standard system. Many of the top name brands available have the same standard warranty. When choosing higher end HVAC equipment, the warranty usually increases as well. This is an added bonus because the higher end equipment typically has more expensive parts. When your HVAC dealer is giving you an estimate, ask them “How much will it cost to repair this system in the event something should fail?” Typically the most expensive parts on a furnace are the electronics, i.e. the control board, and on the A/C typically it’s the compressor. You may also inquire about extended warranties the manufacture may offer. This extended warranty may also cover the labor as well. Furnaces have different efficiency ratings which are indicated as a percentage, the higher the percentage, the more efficient the unit. Higher efficiency furnaces produce the same amount of heat as lower efficiency units of the same output BTU size. The difference is that the higher efficiency furnaces use less gas to do so, thereby saving you money. A new tax credit is now available for home and commercial building owners who install geothermal heating and cooling systems through the Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008 (H.R. 1424). H.R. 1424 offers a onetime tax credit of 30% of the total investment for homeowners who install residential ground loop or ground water geothermal heat pumps Geo-thermal systems are a more economical and environmentally friendly alternative to heat and

cool your home. Typically geo systems are more expensive to install initially due to the cost of the ground loop installation and the equipment cost 2-3 times that of a conventional system but will soon pay for it self in utility savings. Not every home is suited for a geo system; ground loops are often times the problem. If your home sets on a smaller lot or on rocky soil, you may not have the available area to place the loops. Installation is another factor when considering a new HVAC system. Ask the contractor for a load calculation on your home. This will tell you how many BTU’s are required to heat and cool your home. Make sure they inspect your ductwork for possible air leaks and proper sizing, mismatched systems will cost you more to operate and can cause premature problems with the equipment. With the air quality systems available today, you can do almost anything desired with your home. Please consider your living habits before you buy. Spending hundreds on air purifiers to clean your air over a 2 to 3 day period can be undone as quickly as opening a window or door for 10 minutes and having to start all over again. Ask your contractor to give you information on different types of filtration systems, humidifiers and UV products. Cost is another factor when deciding on a HVAC contractor and the equipment he will be selling you. It is best practice to get at least three estimates from HVAC dealers. Often, equipment will fail at the most inopportune times, when this happens it’s hard to resist the temptation to just say yes to the first estimate you get. Some contractors try to push you into purchasing their equipment right away; a reputable contractor will not be pushy and will give you the time needed to make an educated decision. Be cautious of the contractors willing to “give” you the air conditioner for “free” if you purchase the furnace. In reality you’re paying for the equipment it’s just hidden in the cost. Manufactures don’t give their equipment away to the dealer for free. Ask your HVAC dealer for references for past jobs. Ask the customer how well they liked the contractor, where they on-time, did they hold to the price they quoted. Call the Better Business Bureau and check into the contractors past to see if they have had any claims. Hopefully we have given you enough information to make you realize that brand alone is not as important as once thought.

Approved for grants and loan programs for financial aid. *Accreditation means that a school has met national sandards of educational performance which have been established by an impartial non-governmental agency. The accrediting schools by professional, national, and regional associations of like schools (schools with similar objectives and subject content), has long characterized the American educational scene. Through the years, accreditation of schools has been the most authoritative and reliable index of a school’s concern for integrity toward its students and quality education.

Choose a Bank

Selecting the Right Bank Given how much time and effort people generally spend on any number of financial decisions, it is surprising how little they sometimes put into selecting the right bank for their needs and circumstances. A broad array of financial issues can be impacted by the type of banking services used, and it is important to keep a series of things in mind when selecting a bank. Interest Rates and Fees Charged A bank's competitiveness is often measured by the interest rates it offers. It is not uncommon fo r the savings account interest rates offered by different banks to vary, but the majority of institutions will make adjustments to rates according to changes in the federal funds rate. Upon first glance, variations in interest rates might seem inconsequential, but when substantial deposit amounts are involved, the difference can be quite significant. It is typical for banks to assess fees and other charges for particular sorts of transactions. As an example, a checking account may permit only a certain number of checks to be written each month at no charge. Once that amount is exceeded, fees will be assessed. Alternatively, a bank may require customers to maintain a minimum balance in order to keep their account active. With free checking nearly extinct, it’s important to review a bank’s lineup of accounts for a good fit for you. Some banks do offer checking accounts that will waive the monthly service charge if certain conditions are met. Other account types to look for include a higher interest account and, if you have children, an account for young adults. Banks vary in their policies and procedures, and consumers must always do their research before selecting a financial institution. Personal Convenience Another key element of selecting the right bank is that of convenience. It makes sense to identify those banks which feature multiple branches located in the areas to which you travel most, including the neighborhoods in which you live, work and frequently visit. It is virtually inevitable that you will need to hit the bank after you leave the office or make a quick stop to deposit funds before the close of business on any given day. You can greatly simplify your life by ensuring that your bank offers one or more easily accessible branches. When traveling, in the past you would find banking to be more of a challenge if you chose a local or regional institution. But today, with innovations such as online and mobile phone banking, the challenges are few and far between. You always have access to your funds when needed. Overdraft Safeguards Try as you might, chances are that you will have an accidental overdraft every once in a while. Different banks have different policies when it comes to this issue. There are banks willing to offer overdraft coverage that takes the form of a high interest line of credit that is accessed only in the event of a bounced check. Other institutions simply charge fees each time an overdraft occurs. At other banks, overdrafts are afforded no coverage whatsoever. It is important to research the overdraft policies of multiple banks prior to making a final selection. Institutional Stability Many people fail to consider a bank's stability when choosing a financial institution Before you entrust your money to a bank, you should take a look at its history and financial condition. Typically, deposited funds are invested by banks under a fractional reserve banking system, and a bank with a clean balance sheet will be the most able to weather any turbulence caused by market corrections.

The majority of banks are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation for up to $250,000 per depositor. This value can vary depending on the type and number of accounts held by a customer. You can rest assured that your money will, in all likelihood, be safe in any bank. That is not to say that failures are completely impossible. A solid bank will have limited exposure to toxic assets that put its balance sheet at risk. Services You Need Most banks offer a wide range of services. Some even offer convenient services like ATMs and online and mobile phone banking for free when you open an new account. Whether you need to take out a loan or open a checking account, choose a bank that fulfills your needs at the lowest cost, while offering the maximum convenience possible. Careful and vigilant shoppers can look forward to positive experiences by taking the time to select a trustworthy commercial bank.

How to. . .

Select a Hearing Aid Specialist

For most people a hearing loss occurs so gradually that they don’t even realize they have one. Since no one wants to wear hearing aids, people often deny they have a hearing loss or blame others for not speaking clearly. If your family or friends comment that you are not hearing well, or if you constantly have to ask others to repeat themselves, you should have your ears examined and your hearing tested. The sooner you do something about your hearing loss, the easier it is to correct the problem. Hearing aid specialists and audiologists are trained to look for certain “red flags” during the initial exam, which may signal an underlying medical condition. If any of these warning signs are present, you will be referred to a doctor who specializes in disorders of the ear. If your hearing loss is treatable with hearing aids, like almost 95% of hearing loss cases are, your test results along with your lifestyle and typical listening environments will be used to determine the style and level of technology necessary to produce the best corrective results. Hearing aid prices vary depending on the level of technology, style, length of warranty, and extent of service after the purchase. If possible, price should not be the only determining factor when selecting hearing aids; however, you shouldn’t pay for technology you don’t need. When choosing your new hearing aids, it is helpful to think about what you want to achieve with your new hearing aids. For instance, if you just want to hear the television at home, you probably don’t need the most expensive hearing aid loaded with automatic features. However, if you hope to be able to hear the sermon at church or join in conversation at a restaurant, you will probably benefit from directional microphones and more advanced noise cancellation technology. While this advanced technology often comes at a price, the result is usually a more effortless and pleasant listening experience, which may mean the difference between wearing your hearing aids or leaving them in a drawer.

Almost all hearing aids purchased today are digital, which means they can be customized to your particular hearing loss and listening preferences. This is one reason to be cautious about purchasing hearing aids online or through the mail. Even though they may look like the hearing aids you would purchase from a hearing specialist or audiologist doesn’t mean they are appropriate for your hearing loss and could potentially damage your hearing further if they are not adjusted properly. Plus, in-the-ear styles that are not made to fit the shape of your ear specifically are likely to whistle or squeal as a result of feedback. To get the most out of your hearing aids it is important to work closely with your hearing specialist and provide details about your listening experiences. It may take more than one visit to the office, so be sure to choose a provider you are comfortable with and who is genuinely interested in helping you hear well. Also make sure you are given a trial period so you can try the hearing aids in different listening environments, like group functions or while running errands. And, don’t forget to ask about re-stocking fees or other hidden costs. Word of mouth is usually a good indicator, so ask other people where they went to get their hearing aids and whether they were happy with the service they received. If you follow the above suggestions when purchasing hearing aids, you are likely to see positive results and will be happy that you finally took the BIG step to better hearing.

How to. . .

Plan Kitchen and Bath Designs

When it is time to remodel your kitchen or bath, you will want to consider three key factors. The design should be functional, should look great and should be within your budget. You may be able to do some of the work yourself, but for some work, it will be important to hire a professional. Function The first task you will need to decide when remodeling a kitchen or bath is the function of the room. Some people love to eat in their kitchens, while others have a separate dining area. Some people love to get dressed in their bathroom, while others choose to do this in their bedrooms. Make a list of all the things that you currently do in the kitchen or bath. Number this list from most important to least important. Sometimes choices may be tough to make, but taking your time and making wise decisions now will pay rich dividends in the end. Now make a list of the items you need in your bathroom or kitchen. Do you need the washing machine and dryer near your kitchen? How about a closet in your bathroom? Knowing the answer to these questions will bring about your remodeling success. Finally, make a floor plan. Consider where everything should go to let you take the fewest steps. After a hard day at work, you will be glad that you have designed your kitchen or bath so that you take the fewest steps. Also consider if you enjoy entertaining in your kitchen. If you do, then make sure to include this in your floor plan. Consider adding a bar or a table for entertaining. Almost all homeowners wish that they had more storage space, so make sure and incorporate as much storage space as possible. Décor Look through home design magazines to see what designs you like the best. Cut out those designs that particularly appeal to you. Make notes on what you like the best about each design. When it is time to remodel your kitchen or bath then you should have a great idea of

what you love. If you are selling your home soon, it is important to consider what the future homeowners will enjoy. In the kitchen, consider using stainless steel appliances. They look great in any décor and are very easy to clean. Also consider using neutral flooring. Neutral floor coverings are a sustainable, lowmaintenance material that generally makes a good choice for a kitchen or bathroom. When painting, choose a neutral color. This will open up opportunities for a variety of decorating options making it easier for you to change your decor as time goes by. If the time comes to sell your home, it will also allow potential buyers to visualize themselves creating a room of their own in that space. You will want both your kitchen and bathroom design to coincide with the design of the other rooms in your home. If your house is designed in a contemporary, modern, traditional or Asian style design, you will want the kitchen and bath to blend with that decor. Many experts suggest that you spend the majority of your money when remodeling a kitchen or bath on the countertops. A new countertop helps to set the décor for a room. A great way to incorporate colors into a room is with small accent pieces. By incorporating them with small pieces it is easier to change décor, if you change your mind. Budget Remodeling can be expensive. Experts recommend you spend up to 20 percent of your home’s value on remodeling the kitchen, and less than that on remodeling the bath. Homeowners can save a lot of money by having their current cabinets redone, adding a fresh coat of paint, and installing energy efficient appliances. Make sure and leave room in your budget to hire professionals to do the electrical and plumbing work, along with any other tasks you're not comfortable doing yourself — including creating a design from scratch.

How to. . . Install alarms Burglar alarms are commonly used to prevent burglaries. The best alarms are also visual, since they let your intruders and neighbors see an obvious signal of a break-in to go along with the sirens. Test it regularly, but be sure to warn your neighbors first so they know what's going on. Alarm decals are important visual warnings to burglars, so make them visible on your windows and doors. If you don't want an alarm, you can get fake alarm stickers which, when visibly placed in a window, can act as a solid deterrent. How to Choose a Home Alarm System eHow Home & Garden Editor This article was created by a professional writer and edited by experienced copy editors, both qualified members of the Demand Media Studios community. All articles go through an editorial process that includes subject matter guidelines, plagiarism review, fact-checking, and other steps in an effort to provide reliable information. Alarm systems for the home can be complicated and expensive, so it's crucial to determine your security needs before you begin consulting with alarm companies. 1 Survey your home and determine how many windows and doors you want to be 'switched,' or integrated into the home security system. 2 Determine possible locations for the control panel and keypads. You might find it convenient to place a keypad close to the front door. You might also want a keypad close to the bedrooms. The control panel commands the system, and the keypads allow you to program the system and turn it, or its components, on and off. 3 Determine how far away windows and doors are from the control panel so that you know how far wires will be routed if you choose a wired alarm system or how far a wireless system needs to communicate with sensors. Keep in mind that it is difficult to install a hard-wired security system unless your house is still under construction. 4 Decide whether you want a monitored security system that will be monitored 24 hours a day. The central monitoring station 'watches' your home for a monthly fee. A less expensive alternative is a basic sensor system with a dialer accessory that connects the system to your phone lines and dials preselected numbers if the house's security is breached. Insurance

Protect your Home companies frequently give insurance discounts for monitored alarm systems. 5 Consider your lifestyle. Does anyone in the family often get up in the middle of the night for a snack? Do you have a large pet that roams the house at night? Such circumstances will influence the type of motion sensor you select and how it is installed. It may also call for you or members of your family to take trips to the keypad to prevent false alarms. 6. Consult with a reputable home security system adviser. 7 Choose a system with a control panel that can monitor all the zones you have in your home. Each window or door integrated into the system is considered a zone. A basic system is capable of controlling eight zones. However, many panels permit the addition of expansion modules that allow the system to watch up to 32 zones. It is important to have all devices on their own zone so that you can pinpoint the intrusion or the problem if it is service related. 8 Determine if the routing of the wires for a hard-wired security system might be too long. With a wired system, you will have to drill holes in walls where wires will have to be routed. If the wire run appears too long to you, choose a wireless system. 9 Make certain that a wireless system can perform up to the distance of the farthest zone. 10 Be certain that the system you choose can accept fire-protection sensors, carbon monoxide sensors and combustible-gas detectors, anti-freeze-up low-temperature switches (especially in cold climates) and water detectors. Make sure that panic buttons are or can be included. 11 Choose a system that is user-friendly. Make certain that inputting codes into the keypad is not a complicated process and is one that everyone in the family can learn quickly. You don't want to have to refer to the owner's manual as you input or try to interpret codes. 12 Work the keypad of the system you select to assure yourself that it is easy to use. Encourage all family members to work the keypad so that you will select one that everyone can use comfortably Be Weary of door to door salesman of security systems, the industry has had a great deal of problems with unscrupulous companies coming in and trying to take advantage of people, especially the elderly, with deceit and half truth. Most of these complaints derive from deceptions or lies on the part of the alarm company.

How to. . .

Choose a University

Choosing a college or university is an important, very personal decision that you should research extensively. Crucial selection criteria can help when sorting through admission catalogs and visiting websites or local college fairs. Prepare a list of five to seven schools, advises Dr. Joni Bastian, vice president for student affairs at McKendree University in Lebanon, Ill. “You may want to include both larger and smaller schools if you are unsure about the size of the campus you want to attend,” she says. Admission counselors—professionals who work for colleges and universities—will guide you through the decision process but before you apply, consider the following: Does the college offer quality academic programs? Colleges offer a wide variety of academic programs, from liberal arts to pre-professional. If your major is not listed but you are interested in other programs, you may have an opportunity to minor, pursue independent study or self-design a major. Undecided on a major? A liberal arts curriculum will expose you to a variety of subjects as you complete your general education requirements. Ask what services are provided to help you decide on a major. “Remember that it is common to change your major and that it’s OK to not declare a major during your first year,” Bastian says. Make sure you meet academic requirements for application. Many colleges and universities require qualified ACT or SAT scores and these tests are given throughout the year. Some give a writing proficiency exam to students seeking admission. Others require high school students to have taken some college preparatory courses. Most colleges want high school records to check an incoming student’s grade point average minimums. How will you pay for tuition? Financial aid is available through grants, loans and a variety of scholarships. These are based on financial need or good grades and activities outside the classroom. For example, scholarships may be offered to athletes or to students who have been exceptionally active in their schools or communities. Many independent scholarships can be researched and applied for online. Additionally, grants are available from the federal and state governments, and from the institutions themselves. The financial aid office can help you and your family understand the process for obtaining scholarships, grants and private aid. Be sure to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine what state and federal support is available based on your family’s or personal income. Go online to www.fafsa.gov for more information. Will you live on campus? Living on campus makes it easier to meet people and get involved. “Current research indicates that students who are engaged with their learning community are more likely to succeed in school,” says Lisa Brennan, coordinator of first-generation student success at McKendree University. “Living on campus is a great way to immerse yourself into the college community.” Some schools require first and second-year students to live in campus housing; some do not allow them to have vehicles on campus; and others offer limited housing. Compare the cost of room and board to that of commuting from home or living in town. Do you need special attention? A small student-to-faculty ratio offers more opportunity to participate actively in class, know your professors and receive personal attention. Many colleges and universities offer tutoring, special testing environments or academic support centers to help students succeed. If accessibility is an issue, inquire about ways to get around the campus. Where is the school located? Location is important not only for commuter students but also those who want to get involved in the community. It can also affect the availability of internships and employment opportunities. Internships are programs that give you an opportunity to work part-time in the field you are studying. As a student intern, you can gain valuable work experience and make connections in your chosen profession. Urban area colleges and universities may be accessible via public transportation; however, some students may not feel comfortable living in a big city. Suburban schools offer convenient access to the city but transportation may be limited. A rural environment may be regarded as safe but offers limited professional and cultural opportunities. Safety is an important factor to consider when selecting a school. Be sure to ask what the college or university does to keep its students safe. If you choose to live on campus, you should factor in the cost and means of traveling to and from home for special occasions, holidays and spring breaks. How does the school encourage independence? For many first-year students, going to college is a step toward independence. Families can help young students make decisions and will want to stay informed about activities offered at the school. Although privacy laws prohibit sharing grades and attendance records, many schools offer a variety of sources, such as a parent association, to keep families connected and supportive. Does the college offer co-curricular activities or athletics that interest you? Co-curricular activities and athletics expand students’ participation on campus. Ways

to get involved include student government, residence life, activities and special interest organizations, campus ministry, intercollegiate competition, forensics and debate, Model United Nations, and academic pursuits such as honor societies, the college newspaper, literary magazine, band, choir or theatre productions. “Remember, getting involved will help you become a part of the learning community and increase the likelihood of completing your degree,” says Brennan. Consider the sporting events that you like to participate in or watch. Schools offer various levels of intercollegiate athletic competition; some may offer only intramural sports. Social, or “Greek,” fraternities and sororities are another way to meet others on campus. Colleges and universities often have special housing for their larger Greek organizations. Other fraternities or sororities focus on community service. Participation in service learning can strengthen your resume by offering opportunities to gain leadership, public speaking, budget management and planning experience. Why visit the campus? Visiting the campus is very important, emphasizes Bastian. “Often you can tell immediately if it is a good match or not, just by how friendly the campus community is during your visit.” Try to visit at least twice. Arrange the first one with an admission counselor. Request a campus tour that includes seeing the residence halls where students live, and an opportunity to meet with a professor in your academic field. If time permits, Bastian also suggests attending an event on campus that is open to the public, such as a concert, play or football game. “This offers a great opportunity to talk to current students or alumni in an informal setting,” she says. Check websites for special event calendars. Get to know other prospective students, as well as students currently enrolled. Some admission offices host Facebook groups or live web chats, where prospective students can talk to current students or admission counselors. What’s next? In addition to campus websites, the following resources can save you time and money as you make your decision: Colleges of Distinction recognizes colleges that “are the best places to learn, to grow, and to succeed.” http://www.collegesofdistinction.com/ U.S. News Media Group compares colleges and universities by rankings that include price, ACT/SAT scores, retention rates, and student-to-faculty ratio. http://colleges.usnews. rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges College Board offers resources about preparing for, finding, applying to and paying for college. http://www.collegeboard.com U.S. Department of Education/FAFSA offers the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid. http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ eCampusTours offers virtual online tours of participating colleges and universities (registration required). http://www.ecampustours.com/ G.I.
