The Route 66 Festival offers something for every age.

Route 66 Festival set to roll into 20th anniversary

By CODY KING cking@edwpub.net The 20th annual Route 66 Festival is coming back to City Park. The two-day festival, running from 5 p.m. to midnight, Friday, June 9, and 8 a.m. to midnight, Saturday, June 10, celebrates the historic “Mother Road” that travels from Chicago all the way to Santa Monica, Calif. “As long as the weather cooperates, we always have a great crowd. A lot of people see this festival as a kickoff to the summer park events, which have always been so popular,” Program Coordinator for Parks and Recreation Katie Grable said. The event is family-oriented, featuring local food and beer vendors, trolley tours, live music, children’s activities, the Metro Milers 10K run, the classic car show and more. Grable said with this year being the festival’s 20th anniversary, there will be some new additions as well. “The Me2You Game Truck is one of them and I believe it will help us fill a need for the older kids and teens. Every parent knows that face painting and balloon animals lose their luster with the older kids, so we’re thrilled to have found something that will truly make the festival an event for all ages. We also plan to have a rock climbing tower, which again, appeals to a broader age range than the traditional bounce houses and inflatables and adds an element of challenge for our more adventurous visitors,” Grable said. At 6:30 p.m., The Catapults will take to the stage to kick off Friday’s music lineup, followed by the Jeremiah Johnson Band at 9 p.m. On Saturday, The Mellow Dees will perform at 2:30

p.m., followed by Blackwater Revival at 6:30 p.m. and closing with Johnny Holzum & Well Hungarians at 9:30 p.m. This year’s festival will also feature the Metro Milers 10K Run and the Trailnet Route 66 bike ride at 8 a.m., Saturday, June 10. The 10K run will start and end at City Park. Race packet pickup for the 10K will take place at First to the Finish in Edwardsville on Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Packets can also be picked up prior to the race on Saturday morning at City Park. More information about the 10K can be found at www. route6610k.com. The Trailnet Route 66 bike ride will include extra short, short, medium, and long routes. The terrain will be flat to rolling, but will not include large hills. Cyclists are encouraged to park in the lot on the left on Kansas Street. More information about the bike ride can be found at www.trailnet.org.  Grable said a key sponsor in the festival continues to be Cork Tree Creative, Inc., who has sponsored the event since 2013. “Cork Tree Creative has been our biggest sponsor since 2013. It’s a partnership that I am extremely thankful for. We have been fortunate to have support from many area business but there are several longtime sponsors that return each year including TheBANK of Edwardsville, Madison Mutual, Cassens Transport, JF Electric, Abstracts & Titles, Scott Credit Union, First Cover Leaf Bank, RP Lumber, Phillips 66, Republic Services and The Intelligencer. It’s hard for me to remember a year that these business haven’t supported,” she said. The classic car show begins at 4 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the classic car cruise at 6:30 p.m. Grable said overall, everyone seems to enjoy the same festivities each year. “I think there is a consistency that people appreciate. We

Summer Fun Build your own bocce ball court By MELISSA KOSSLER DUTTON Associated Press J o h n P a u l Vy b o r n y a n d h i s f a m i l y discovered bocce ball while vacationing in the Bahamas many years ago. When they returned home, they looked for bocce courts near their house in Tucson, Arizona. They located some near relatives in Michigan and at a favorite restaurant in California, but nothing convenient to home. So, after recently moving into a house w i t h a l a rg e b a c k y a rd , Vy b o r n y a n d his wife, Anna, now empty nesters, decided to install their own bocce court for entertaining friends and family. He developed the plans and found a contractor to help build it. “It’s a really nice social activity,” he said. “It’s interactive. It’s very easy to play.” Landscaper Greg Rowland says he has seen a steady increase in customers asking for bocce courts. “I have installed them from one end of Phoenix to the other. In the last six months, I’ve done more residential courts than in the last year and half,” said the owner of Grow Land landscaping firm. “A 4-year-old and an 84-year-old can play this game. It’s a great intergenerational activity.”

Bocce involves two teams and nine balls. One player throws a small ball, called a pallino, down the court. Players then alternate tossing the other eight balls, which are about the size of a softball, trying to get as close as possible to the smaller ball. The person who throws the closest ball and his or her teammates whose balls are closer than their opponents earn points. The game, a popular past-time in Italy, has roots in ancient Egypt and the Roman Empire. Bocce is catching on rapidly in this country, said Mario Pagnoni, author of “The Joy of Bocce” (Masters Press, 1995). “It is a wonderful game full of skill and strategy, one that requires finesse at times,” he said. He noted that bocce courts are being added “in parks, retirement homes, condo c o m p l e x e s a n d i n s c h o o l s a c ro s s t h e country.” The game’s appearance in public spaces, including restaurants and bars, has driven interest among do-it-yourselfers, said Felicia Feaster, managing editor at HGTV. Building a bocce court is “harder than a corn hole game but easier than a backyard bowling alley,” she said. Numerous websites, including HGTV. com, PopularMechanics.com and

Summer Fun

What's new at the zoo Stingrays at Caribbean Cove presented by Mercy Kids opened at the Saint Louis Zoo on April 14 and runs through Oct. 1, 2017. Cownose rays and southern stingrays, along with bonnethead, brown-banded and white-spotted bamboo sharks glide through a 17,000-gallon warm saltwater pool located under the Edward Jones Pavilion. Guests are encouraged to dip their hands into the water and allow the animals to touch them. Occasionally, there will be an opportunity to feed the stingrays. These are hardy species that interact well with people in a safe and fun manner. The 20-inch deep pool includes a waterfall and a state-of-the-art life support system. The pool also has solitary space and places for the animals to rest if they choose. Zoo interpreters and educators will be on hand to help visitors and to share information about the animals, sustainable seafood and ocean conservation. “Mercy Kids is excited to be part of this interactive exhibit designed for kids of all ages,” said Dr. John Mantovani, Chair of Pediatrics and Medical Director of Mercy Children’s Hospital, a program of Mercy Kids. “Each spring families anticipate the opening of Stingrays at the Zoo, and we are proud to partner with others who bring education and fun to children in our community.” About Sharks and Stingrays The bonnethead shark is the smallest member of the hammerhead family. They have semi-circular heads resembling a shovel or bonnet. Bamboo sharks are sometimes called “cat sharks” because the barbels, or sensory organs, near their mouths resemble cat whiskers. The sharks at Stingrays at Caribbean Cove are small, docile fish and pose no danger to humans. They range from 2 ½ to 4 feet in length and are bottom-dwelling species that

prey on small fish, crabs and invertebrates. Visitors will not be feeding the sharks, but they will be able to touch the sharks as they swim by. Cownose rays and southern stingrays are related to sharks. Stingrays have flat bodies, long pointed fins and long whip-like tails that can be used for defense against predators. At Stingrays at Caribbean Cove, their stingers or barbs are painlessly clipped back just as human fingernails are clipped. Staff at the exhibit will monitor the stingrays throughout the season to ensure that the barbs stay neatly trimmed. Admission Admission to Stingrays at Caribbean Cove is $4 per person for ages 2 and up. Children under age 2 are free. Zoo Friends members at the Family Level and above may use their Anywhere Plus passes for admission. Visitors can enjoy a full day at the Zoo with all the amenities for just $12.95 with the Adventure Pass and receive free admission to Stingrays at Caribbean Cove and other attractions. Admission is free the first hour the Zoo is open. Stingray feedings are $1.00 per cup. Groups of 15 or more may call (314) 6464718 in advance for group discounts. Tropical Traders Gift Shop will offer a variety of ocean-related souvenirs, including plush stingrays and other sea life items, shark merchandise, T-shirts, nautical gifts and more. Ray’s Grill will serve up fish tacos, fajitas, Philly steak sandwiches, margaritas and more. Zoo Hours Stingrays at Caribbean Cove will be open April 14 through Oct. 1 during Zoo hours. The Zoo’s spring hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through May 25. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, May 26-September 4, the Zoo is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through

Thursday; and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday for Prairie Farms Summer Zoo Weekends. The Zoo will close at noon on Friday, June 16, because of ZOOFARI the Zoo’s biennial fundraiser. The Zoo will be open until 7 p.m. on summer holidays: Memorial Day, May 29; Independence Day, July 3-4; and Labor Day, Sept. 4. Starting Sept. 5, the Zoo’s hours return to 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
