MoBot to present Garden of Glass

For The Edge The Missouri Botanical Garden will play host to floral glass artist Craig Mitchell Smith this summer during its Garden of Glass event, May 25 to Aug. 12. Smith’s pieces have previously been on exhibit at Walt Disney World’s Epcot Center, Michigan State University and various botanical gardens. His work has been featured on HGTV. Smith is known for his custom kiln-fired technique and style. He uses fusing, texturing, slumping and cold-working to create his pieces. Next summer ’s exhibit will feature 30 displays, all commissioned specifically for

the Missouri Botanical Garden. It will be the world’s largest kiln-fired glass exhibit to date. “We continue to look for exhibits that will delight our visitors,” said Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson, president of the Missouri Botanical Garden. “Craig’s passions for gardening and floral glass make this a perfect fit for the Garden.” The majority of the exhibit will be housed in the Garden’s Climatron® with preview pieces on other parts of the grounds and one display at the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House. Evening events will be held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings June 1 to August 12 so that guests

can see the exhibit with custom lighting. Evening events will feature food and beverage sales and live entertainment. The pieces are best seen at night, but will be on display during regular daytime hours at a reduced charge. Tickets for evening events will be available in early January 2017. Smith’s pieces will be available for sale following the close of the show. Additional studio pieces will be available for sale in the shop located in Ridgway Visitors Center. The Missouri Botanical Garden is located at 4344 Shaw Blvd. in south St. Louis, accessible from Interstate 44 at the

Pictured is an artist's rendreing of the new Union Station, which will include the St. Louis Aquarium and the St. Louis Observation Wheel.

St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station taking shape For The Edge Lodging Hospitality Management (LHM), owner of St. Louis Union Station, has announced that St. Louis-based PGAV Destinations will design the St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station, the next phase of development at the National Historic Landmark train station in downtown St. Louis. The highly anticipated project is currently in the design phase. Construction is expected to begin in fall 2017 with an anticipated completion in summer 2019. The aquarium's professional operator will be announced at a later date. "We're very excited to have one of the top design firms in the country working with us on this project," said Bob O'Loughlin, chairman and CEO of Lodging Hospitality Management (LHM). "And the fact that PGAV Destinations is a St. Louis company means that they can appreciate the value of Union Station and its history and importance to the community. "The reception both locally and nationally to the first phase of our project has been tremendous and we know the opening of the St. Louis Observation Wheel in spring 2019 and the Train Park and St. Louis Aquarium will make Union Station a true destination hotel and entertainment complex," said O'Loughlin. The 65,000-square-foot St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station will be located in the former mall area within St. Louis Union Station. The $45 million attraction will feature one-of-akind exhibits and tanks with 700,000 gallons of water housing thousands of aquatic species from the rivers and oceans of the world. PGAV Destinations, located in downtown St. Louis, has been involved in the design of exhibits at many of the nation's top aquatic attractions, including the Georgia Aquarium, South Carolina Aquarium, Discovery Cove and Sea World. The company - which specializes in designing attractions, exhibits and experiences that enrich lives and create memories for guests - also has designed environments at the Saint

Louis Zoo, including Polar Bear Pointe, Sea Lion Sound, Penguin & Puffin Coast, the new Grizzly Ridge opening this fall and a variety of other popular visitor experiences. "We like to think outside the box, dream big and bring our clients' hopes and dreams into reality," said PGAV Destinations' lead aquarium designer Emily Howard, vice president. "The aquarium will be something unique to our city and Union Station's spectacular architecture and environment will make this project even more special." The St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station will be an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) which holds members to the highest standards in animal care and exhibition. The facility will employ an animal husbandry team of marine biologists and aquarists responsible for the long-term care of the animals in the exhibit as well as overseeing water chemistry, animal nutrition, veterinary care, education, staffing and safety. The attraction will be open 365 days a year from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. One million visitors are expected annually. School groups will experience an exceptional educational experience and the aquarium will be a major entertainment destination for local and out-of-town visitors. An 8,500-square-foot private event space will feature the attraction's tanks as a backdrop for weddings, social events and corporate parties. The St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station will be part of a $100 million family entertainment complex planned for St. Louis Union Station. Other components will include the previously announced St Louis Wheel - a 200-foot-high observation wheel with 30 fully enclosed, climate-controlled and ADA-compliant gondolas that seat up to six adults each. Wheel passengers will take three to four rotations high over the St. Louis skyline during the 10-to-12-minute ride. Located on the south side of the historic train shed, the wheel also will include one VIP experience gondola with a glass floor, no line

May 18, 2017

wait time and an extended ride. The St. Louis Wheel will be a new iconic attraction on the St. Louis skyline and will be operational every day of the year, accommodating an estimated 500,000 visitors annually. Other phases of the entertainment complex at St. Louis Union Station are underway in an area beneath the historic train shed that will be known as The Train Park. The Train Park will feature food and beverage concessions served out of train cars and shipping containers, the Fire & Light Show at the Lake, the St. Louis Wheel, the Hard Rock Café and Landry's restaurants, and new retail and family attractions. The first phase of development - the Fire & Light Show at the Lake - opened in November 2016. The show emanates from nine fire pods submerged in the watery pool. Tube lights, hung from trees in the Train Park, and a light show projected onto the ceiling panels of the train shed above the lake, create a display synchronized to music on view every hour on the hour throughout each evening. A new boardwalk has been added around the train shed lake allowing guests to stroll completely around the water and connect to both the Hard Rock Café and Landry's restaurants. A cantilevered net lounge will be installed between the restaurants where guests can relax in a hammock-style lounge that hovers above the lake to view the Fire & Light Show. The Train Park and Fire & Light Show are being created by Groundswell Design of Philadelphia. Enhancements also are continuing at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel which is adding 28 new hotel rooms beneath the clock tower section on the Market Street side of the building's northeast corner. Construction on the rooms began in January 2017 with completion planned by winter 2017. The hotel currently offers 539 rooms and will increase to 567 rooms when the $6 million project is completed. The hotel also will add 15,636 square feet of new meeting space by expanding the Midway east to 18th Street. Six

new breakout rooms ranging from 1,600 to 2,835 square feet will be added along with another 8,700 square feet of flexible event space created with one of the aquarium's tanks as a backdrop at the cost of $3.5 million. Construction on the meeting space began in January 2017 with completion planned by July 2017. About St. Louis Union Station The National Historic Landmark St. Louis Union Station at 1820 Market Street in downtown St. Louis opened to the public on September 1, 1894 and was owned by the Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis. Designed by Theodore Link, it included three main areas: the Headhouse, the Midway and the 11.5-acre train shed. The Headhouse originally housed a hotel, a Fred Harvey restaurant, passenger waiting rooms and railroad ticketing offices. It featured a goldleafed Grand Hall surrounded by Romanesque arches and topped with a 65-foot barrelvaulted ceiling and stained-glass windows. Union Station's Headhouse and Midway are constructed of Indiana limestone and initially included 42 tracks. At its height, the station combined the St Louis passenger services of 22 railroads, the most of any single terminal in the world. It was the world's largest and busiest railroad station when it opened in 1894 and its train shed was noted as the largest roof span in the world. In 1903, the station was expanded to accommodate visitors to the 1904 St Louis World's Fair. Today, the station includes the AAA Four Diamond St. Louis Union Station Hotel, a DoubleTree by Hilton. The 539-room property features four unique ballrooms, beautifully appointed guest rooms and specialty suites, and the elegant Grand Hall featuring an award-winning 3-D projection mapping light show and a 65-foot-long bar. St. Louis Union Station is owned by Lodging Hospitality Management (LHM). The hotel has been named one of the world's top railway themed hotels by Condé Nast. The Saint Louis Science Center is proud to announce that it is one of four science museums nationwide to host “Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission,” a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. The exhibition will feature the Apollo 11 command module Columbia, marking the first time in 46 years the module has left the museum, as well as 20 artifacts from the historic mission. After the exhibition tour, the artifacts will return to the Smithsonian for a new exhibition, also titled “Destination Moon,” which will open in 2020. “Destination Moon” will be at the Saint Louis Science Center from April 14 to Sept. 3, 2018. The 49th anniversary of the moon landing is July 20, 2018. “St. Louis played a vital role in the Space Race, with McDonnellDouglas serving as a key leader in the development of the Mercury and Apollo mission technology,” said Bert Vescolani, president and CEO. “We are honored to have the opportunity to host this exhibition, which represents an iconic period in our country’s history. We are the only museum in the Midwest to host this exhibition, which is so special for the city of St. Louis. We feel very honored because we know

that for many people this will be a once- in-a-lifetime chance to see these artifacts.” In addition to the Apollo 11 command module Columbia, the only portion of the historic spacecraft to complete the first mission to land a man on the moon and safely return him to Earth, the exhibition will feature: • Star Chart: The chart shows the positions of the sun, moon and stars at the time Apollo 11 was scheduled to leave Earth’s orbit and head for the moon. • Rucksack #1, Survival Kit: One of two rucksacks filled with equipment to help the crew survive for up to 48 hours in the event of an emergency landing somewhere on Earth. The kit includes three water containers, a radio beacon and spare battery, three pairs of sunglasses, six packages of desalting chemicals, a seawater desalter kit, two survival lights, a machete and two bottles of sunscreen. • Aldrin’s Extravehicular Visor: Buzz Aldrin wore this outer helmet while on the surface of the moon. It fit over his clear pressure-bubble helmet. • Aldrin’s Extravehicular Gloves: These gloves have an outer, cutresistant shell of Chromel-R fabric across the hands to prevent fatal air leaks caused by handling sharp objects and gauntlets to protect against solar heating. The blue fingertips were made of silicone rubber to provide more sensitivity for touching.

Religion How the hijab has grown into a fashion industry BY FAEGHEH SHIRAZI University of Texas at Austin (THE CONVERSATION) Nike, the wellknown U.S. sportswear company, recently introduced a sports hijab. The reaction to this has been mixed: There are those who are applauding Nike for its inclusiveness of Muslim women who want to cover their hair, and there are those who accuse it of abetting women’s subjugation. Nike, in fact, is not the first corporate brand to champion the hijab. I am the author of “Brand Islam,” and I have seen how it is commonly assumed, particularly in the West, that Muslim women are indifferent to fashion. Nothing could be further from the truth: My research shows that Islamic fashion is a rapidly growing industry. History of sports hijab The use of an official sports hijab in competition dates back to July 2012 when the International Football Association Board (IFAB), custodians of the rules of soccer, overturned a 2007 ban which had argued that the hijab was “unsafe” for sports persons as it could “increase” the risk of neck injuries. While overturning the ban, the IFAB noted that there was nothing in “the medical literature concerning injuries as a result of wearing a headscarf.” The sports hijab is

secured in place with magnets. If it does get pulled off, another cap remains underneath, to cover the sports person’s hair without causing any injuries. In 2012, Muslim athletes wearing the hijab received considerable media attention. Wearing the hijab set them apart from other Olympic athletes. Since then, several lesser-known, sports hijab companies – much before Nike’s pro hijab – have come to be in this business. History of Islamic fashion The marketing of Islamic fashionable clothing, however, is older than the sports hijab. In my research, I found that it started in the 1980s when ethnic grocery dealers in Western Europe and the United States began importing modest fashion clothing along with other items for the Muslim population. That proved to be a successful business. Prior to that, most Muslim women would put together their own styles. These small endeavors ultimately morphed into a competitive and lucrative Muslim fashion industry. Islamic fashion in general is understood as women wearing modest clothing with long sleeves, descending to the ankle and having a high neckline. The outfits are nonhugging, with some form of head covering that could be draped in a variety of styles. Women who prefer to wear pants

combine them with a long sleeved top that covers the buttocks and has a high neckline, along with a head covering. Over time, national and international designers came to be involved in the sale of chic Islamic fashions. Today, Muslim fashion is a lucrative global industry with countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Turkey leading the way outside the Western countries. In 2010 the Turkish newspaper Milliyet estimated the global Islamic clothing market to be worth around US$2.9 billion. The Global Islamic Economy report for 2014-2015 indicated Muslim consumer spending on clothing and footwear had increased to $266 billion in 2013. This represents a growth of 11.9 percent of the global spending in a period of three years. The report predicted this market to reach $488 billion by 2019. The Islamic brand T h i s g ro w t h h a s h a d i t s s h a re o f controversies: Many designers use the term “Islamic” for their clothing. Religious conservatives and Muslim scholars have raised questions about what types of apparel would fit that category and whether defining clothing as “Islamic” was even permitted or lawful by Islamic principles – a concept known as “halal.” In particular, critics have objected to the

fashion catwalk presentations, which actually draw the gaze and attention of spectators to the bodies of models, while the purpose of a hijab is to distract and move the gaze away from the body. In Iran, for example, Islamic fashion is viewed by the ulama (religious scholars) as another Western influence and referred to as “Western Hijab.” Nonetheless, the Islamic fashion industry has managed to initiate marketing campaigns that capitalize on the very core of Islamic precepts: Sharia, or the Islamic religious law. A Malaysian apparel company, Kivitz, for example, uses the phrase “Syar’i and Stylish.” In Malay, Syar'i is the same as Sharia. In establishing a nominally Islamic brand, marketers make every effort to align their products with the core value of Islam. So, even when following the trendy fashionable seasonal colors and materials, clothing styles would include some sort of head covering. Who are the consumers? The question still remains: What led to such a rapid growth over a span of just three years? My research has demonstrated that Muslims are more brand aware than the general population. However, in the past they were largely ignored by the fashion industry, perhaps, due to misconceptions that being a Muslim restricted people’s lifestyle.

"Free Fire"

The shootout, often a ballet, is a battle royale in Ben Wheatley's "Free Fire." When the bullets start flying, Wheatley's arms-deal-gonewrong 1970s shoot-up comes to a crawl. There's a total absence of slow-motion cartwheels. No one miraculously walks through a wall of fire to kill the bad guys with three precise shots. Not a single Scarlett Johansson roundhouse kick is in the house. Instead, people get maimed, bloodied and dead. There's no subsequent chase or flight from the police, just bickering and trench warfare ... for the majority of the 90 minute film. The movie is 100 percent O.K. Corral. It's a formally impressive feat — set nearly entirely in the same rundown warehouse — but a thin and tedious one. The film, the British director's sixth, spends its first third gathering an ensemble of retro-outfitted characters under the glistening wet of a dark Massachusetts night. The setting and colorful, comic banter would fit into a George V. Higgins novel, or Peter Yates' 1973 adaptation of "Friends of Eddie Coyle." It's an international, much-mustachioed array of characters. A handful of Irish Republican Army agents (Cillian Murphy, Michael Smiley) are meeting gun sellers (Sharlto Copley's South African; Babou Ceesay's former Black Panther). The deal has been brokered by a pair of savvy Americans (Brie Larson's Justine, Armie Hammer's turtle-necked Ord) and then there are a couple locals, Stevo (Sam Riley) and Bernie (Enzo Cilenti) brought in to carry the crates of assault weapons. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong violence, pervasive language, sexual references and drug use." RUNNING TIME: 90 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"The Promise"

The Armenian Genocide is a curiously unexplored moment in our modern history, cinematically speaking. That fact alone makes director and co-writer Terry George's "The Promise " intriguing enough. Historical fiction generally has it over documentaries in inspiring mass interest, especially when actors as appealing as Oscar Isaac, Christian Bale and Charlotte Le Bon are involved. And indeed, "The Promise" is a sprawling and handsome epic set around the extermination of 1.5 million Armenians in Ottoman Turkey. But despite the best of intentions, the film fails to properly explain and contextualize both what led to that disgraceful episode, which Turkey to this day denies, and why it escalated as it did. Instead, "The Promise" chooses to focus in on an unsympathetic love triangle that manages to trivialize the film overall. The goal, as always, is to personalize the events that are too big and too devastating to look at as a whole — to make it about the lives interrupted, cut short and thrown into turmoil because of external forces. Thus we're given the character Michael Boghosian (Isaac), an Armenian medical student from a small village in Southern Turkey who uses his fiancée's dowry to study modern medicine in Constantinople. Michael isn't in love with his fiancée (Angela Sarafyan), but such is life in Siroun where marriages are arranged and he doesn't have any other choice. He kisses her goodbye and heads off to the big city, promising to return in just a few years. Constantinople is an oasis of temptation for Michael, who essentially falls for the first woman he sees. The beguiling Ana (Le Bon) is a cosmopolitan beauty and intellectual. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "thematic material including war atrocities, violence and disturbing images, and for some sexuality." RUNNING TIME: 134 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2"

In James Gunn's sequel to his swashbuckling space Western, the Guardians of the Galaxy do their version of "The Empire Strikes Back," complete with daddy issues but with a considerably more anarchic spirit and enough acerbic interplay among its interstellar gang to make Obi-Wan blush. The wild whiz-bang of the first "Guardians" and its gleeful upending of superhero conventions was, I thought, not the second-coming others felt it was. Having sat through a meteor shower of imposingly well-made Marvel products, the toopleased-with-itself "Guardians" felt to me like an intensely scripted politician trying to smugly crack wise. When the motley crew of scavengers reunites in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," many of its tricks — the anachronistic '70s hits, the exotically foul-mouthed creatures — are not the sneak attack they were in 2014. But that turns out to be a good thing. No longer so busy advertising his movie's genre transgressions, Gunn, who wrote and directed the sequel, is free to swim backstrokes through his cosmic, CGI-spiced gumbo. It's a soupy, silly spectacle that recalls, if nothing else, the weird, kaleidoscopic design of a Parliament-Funkadelic album cover. Gunn's film also shares George Clinton's goofy extravagance (and includes his song "Flashlight"), and a neoncolored cast with its own Mothership. There are two types in the universe, Dave Bautista's muscle-mound Drax declares early on. "Those who dance and those who do not." In the "Guardians" universe, which blithely mocks just about everything, this is close to a mission statement. Whereas the first film featured Chris Pratt's Peter Quill on a faraway planet bopping to Redbone's "Come and Get Your Love," the early scenes of "Vol. 2" find the Guardians battling some giant monster while Baby Groot — the extraterrestrial tree turned sapling (voiced by Vin Diesel) — grooves to ELO's "Mr. Blue Sky." RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "intense sequences of sci-fi violence, and brief suggestive content." RUNNING TIME: Running time: 136 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Unforgettable"

True story: Right after the final line of "Unforgettable" was uttered, I felt a sudden stinging on the side of my face. Someone in a nearby row at the multiplex had thrown a roasted peanut toward the screen, in what I can only assume was frustration or scorn, and it landed on me. That peanut, I have to say, was the only unforgettable thing about "Unforgettable," a truly uneasy mishmash of a movie, in which apparent attempts at addressing serious social themes — there's a domestic violence subplot — dissolve into total camp. Which one can't really enjoy, because it doesn't seem intentional. The shame is that Rosario Dawson gives an earnest, sympathetic, even moving performance as the victimized character. In contrast, none of her castmates — including Katherine Heigl, trying vainly to find meaning in a ridiculously written part — seem authentic. Somebody didn't get the memo, but who? In plot setup only, "Unforgettable" shares something with the recent wonderful thriller "Get Out" — both involve sympathetic characters of color invited into their romantic partner's lilywhite world, where, let's just say, things do NOT go as planned. From there, "Get Out" developed into one of the cleverest films in a generation. There's nothing clever about "Unforgettable." RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for sexual content, violence, some language, and brief partial nudity." RUNNING TIME: 100 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.

"Risk"

With all the weighty and momentous issues raised in "Risk," Laura Poitras' fascinating, thorny, and remarkably timely documentary on Julian Assange, one of the more subtly illuminating scenes is about something as inconsequential as a haircut. The WikiLeaks founder is getting his locks trimmed, and the rapt, loving attention being paid to this process by co-workers in the room — who, like a team of Hollywood stylists, take turns with the scissors and offer suggestions — makes it look like he's about to go accept a lifetime achievement Oscar. Poitras may have included this scene as a rare light moment — a counterpoint to everything else — but it also gives us a sense of the man and his relationship with those who work for him. It also shows, as do so many scenes here, the seemingly limitless access Poitras had to her subject, whom she began filming about six years ago. Just as in another recent, also excellent documentary, "Weiner," a moment comes where you just think, "Whoa, how was she allowed to do this?" Indeed, Poitras says the same thing. "Sometimes I can't believe what Julian allows me to film," she says in voiceover. "It's a mystery to me why he trusts me, because I don't think he likes me." Whether he likes her or not, and whatever the changing nature of their relationship — there's been talk of a falling out, but it's murky — the leeway Assange gave Poitras is what elevates this film to must-see viewing. Yes, Poitras, an Oscar winner for "Citizenfour" about Edward Snowden, seems less aggressive at times than she could be in investigating what makes Assange tick. Lady Gaga, in a bizarre cameo, is freer with her questions. But it's hard to quibble with the result. RATED: unrated by the Motion Picture Association of America. RUNNING TIME: 95 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"The Dinner"

It's fitting that the first images you see in the riveting family drama "The Dinner" are of food. Fancy food. The kind of artful, designed fare that few mortals could possibly recreate and that bound books, television shows, documentaries and movies fetishize and worship. But this is not food porn. There's something sinister about these images — the ominous music and the camera movements make these painstakingly designed and exorbitantly expensive dishes seem like all that is evil in the modern world. It's a sense that sticks with you throughout writer-director Oren Moverman's grandly ambitious, if not wholly successful film. Based on the Dutch novel by Herman Koch, the set-up is small but instantly intriguing. Two married couples are gathering for dinner to discuss something sensitive, something to do with their teenage sons — creating the atmosphere of genuinely suspenseful whodunit. One is a charismatic congressman who's running for governor, Stan Lohman (Richard Gere) and his primly coiffed (and quite young) wife Katelyn (Rebecca Hall). The other is Stan's perpetually aggrieved brother, Paul (Steve Coogan) and his tolerant wife, Claire (Laura Linney). Paul, a former public school teacher who is obsessed with the Civil War, doesn't want to go to the dinner. He hates the dripping decadence and pretention of the restaurant and does not seem interested in pretending to be anything but disdainful of the operation, even as the eager hosts and perfectly pleasant maître d' (Michael Chernus) proudly explain what's on each dish and why it's so special. As each course comes out, a new layer is exposed in the complex tapestry of the lives of the two Lohman families — Stan's first wife Barbara (Chloe Sevigny), various health issues, of the mental and physical variety, and the deep-seated damage and corrosiveness of long-unchecked privilege. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "disturbing violent content, and language throughout." RUNNING TIME: 120 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

Timing is perfect for "Risk" By JOCELYN NOVECK Associated Press With all the weighty and momentous issues raised in "Risk," Laura Poitras' fascinating, thorny, and remarkably timely documentary on Julian Assange, one of the more subtly illuminating scenes is about something as inconsequential as a haircut. Lady Gaga, in a bizarre cameo, is freer with her questions. But it's hard to quibble with the result. And it's hard to imagine a documentary could be more timely. On Tuesday, three days before the film's opening, Hillary Clinton came out and said that but for two factors — FBI director James Comey, and WikiLeaks — she'd be president. As Poitras makes sure to point out in the final minutes of her film — one of its last lines is a newscaster announcing Donald Trump's election — Assange has become a key figure in the narrative of the 2016 campaign. And she has gotten closer to him than any filmmaker is ever likely

to. Editing right until the end, and nearly a year after a version screened at Cannes, Poitras even rushed last week to incorporate remarks by Attorney General Jeff Sessions that arresting Assange is a priority. Assange, of course, is still living in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, where he took refuge nearly five years ago to avoid being extradited to Sweden, where he'd been accused of rape, accusations he denies. He has said he fears ultimately being extradited to the United States and being tried for espionage. In March, WikiLeaks released nearly 8,000 documents that it says reveal secrets about the CIA's cyberespionage tools. Previously it published hundreds of thousands of State Department cables and U.S. military logs from Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is a winner By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge When “Guardians of the Galaxy” debuted in the late summer of 2014, audiences couldn’t have been happier to be introduced to this rag-tag collection of anti-heroic slacker characters. And that goes double for your favorite hometown movie critic. Chris Pratt’s starmaking turn as Star Lord gave us a glimpse into the Marvel Cinematic Universe that we hadn’t yet seen: the portrayal of characters who will do the right thing, but only when they want to and often after they’ve done the wrong things first. After a combined six weeks at #1, a sequel – as with most things Disney – was all but assured. W h e n w e f a s t f o r w a rd t h re e

summers to the start of Big Movie Season, the Guardians are back in Volume 2 and they bring with them the same raucous, knuckleraking humor, love of ’70s rock, and their same through-note love of assembled family dynamics. It’s not quite the same, but it’s a lot better than most sequels will give you. And I’ve seen more than my share. Much like I said with the original film, plot here is mostly irrelevant and you should enjoy this for the way it makes you feel. The bare bones of the story are this: Star Lord, Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), and her sister, Nebula (Karen Gillan, who’s also starring now in “The Circle”) whisk off to the edge of the known universe with Ego (Kurt Russell), a godlike being known as a Living Planet

or a Celestial, who claims to be Peter ’s father. While trying to get to know dear old dad and his caretaker, the empathic, childlike Mantis (Pom Klementieff), these Guardians are both in awe of his world and fearful that he is too good to be true (spoiler alert: he totally is). Nevertheless, Ego’s homeworld is fun for all of them and a chance for Pratt to go toe-to-toe with Russell, a veteran actor who can also be seen on-screen – including with Diesel – in the current picture “Fate of the Furious”, is a true joy. He plays Ego as effortlessly and assuredly as someone named ‘Ego’ out to be played. He was warm, engaging, and hilarious in his every scene. While on holiday, the other Guardians leave behind Rocket

(Bradley Cooper) and now Baby Groot (Vin Diesel) to fix their downed spaceship that was knocked out of commission when they were being chased for something Rocket stole. They’re being pursued by old frenemey Yo n d u ( M i c h a e l R o o k e r ) f o r both petty and business reasons. Rocket’s ransom and Yondu’s commitment to Star Lord only go so far before mutiny leads to some rollicking battle sequences more for humor than mayhem. It also opens up the stage for Rooker to really get into the action and d e v e l o p t h e Yo n d u c h a r a c t e r, something that feels really weird to even write as I think about what that means for the actor, the title, and the genre on the whole. While it will take no recommendation from me, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.

May 18, 2017

2” will be a mammoth hit for the studio. I loved it, especially the hijinks and self-mockery. Bradley Cooper really does a lot with his voice to give pathos to the foulmouthed raccoon that I would least like to meet in a dark alley a n d D i e s e l , re a l l y d o i n g t h a t voice, breathes life into what is simply the CUTEST movie character in ages, Baby Groot. One of the post-credit sequences features Peter Quill chastising Teenage Groot and it is terrifying to see what this bunch and their director, James Gunn, might cook up for the inevitable “Vol. 3”. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” runs 136 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi action and violence, language, and brief suggestive content. I give this film two and a half stars out of four.

St.ART Street Art Festival planned

St. Louis resident and wellness visionary Michael G. Tompkins is pleased to introduce on Valentine’s Day the inaugural St.ART Street Art Festival in St. Louis, Missouri Sept. 30 and Oct 1. The goal of the 2-day festival is to encourage hope, healing and positive dialogue through art—including large canvas painting, poetry, performance art, and “yarn bombing” trees. During the weekend, a group of inspired local and renowned street artists will convey the emotions of the underprivileged and silenced in the community on large canvases and through spoken word, in the city of St. Louis. “The divide in St. Louis between those that have and those that have not is undeniable. Not unlike the iconic St. Louis Arch, art has an ability to bridge the divide. Art brings various opinions together in a way where all opinions are valid. There is no black and white; right or wrong,” says Tompkins. The artists begin the dialogue by conveying the voice and frustration of the people on the first day, then express their vision of our new community on day two. The festival will be interactive with the audience, using yarn bombing on trees for the observers to leave their own personal messages of frustration and hope. While the first day will be held in Fairgrounds Park, day two will be held at Langenberg Field in Forest Park. Both days are complementary and open to the public from 10am-8pm. Street artists signed on include Basil Kincaid, Cbabi Bayoc, Fnnch, Peat Eyez Wollaeger, Kidlew and Stephen “YARNbomber” Duneier. Poets include Pacia Anderson, and Richard Blanco. Blanco, who was selected by President Barack Obama in 2012

to serve as the fifth inaugural poet in U.S. history (joining the ranks of Robert Frost and Maya Angelou), will open and close the festival. Artists and donors were quick to embrace Tompkins’ vision to use street art to start a dialogue between diverse groups in St. Louis. A recent transplant to St. Louis, Tompkins came up with the idea for St.ART after witnessing amazing street art following the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson. Day one of St.ART, the canvases will be painted in black and white. The TRUTH of the hopelessness, the desperation of not feeling heard, and the hardships found in our inner city neighborhoods. Day two the theme is: “Hope has color.” In one of the brightest areas that our city celebrates, those same artists will paint in color, their vision of our new community. “The incident in Ferguson changed me from having rose colored glasses about St. Louis, to becoming aware of the distinct socioeconomic and racial divide, which has been palpable to both the black and white populations in our community for decades,” said Tompkins. “When I saw messages of frustration and despair, as well as messages of hope displayed, it spurred me take action. Large scale art has always had an ability to convey emotion on a much grander scale—the impact is so much bigger. Street art speaks a universal language and by allowing the artwork to stand on its own it takes away the ego of judgement.” The proceeds of the canvas sales will fund resiliency programs for the inner city and public service sector. To date, St.ART has already raised individual donations totaling more than 55 percent of our event budget—nearly all of the donors outside the city of St. Louis. St.ART is an innovative festival with a shared vision to open a dialogue. The goal of the 2-day street art festival is to encourage hope, healing and positive dialogue through art— including large canvas painting, poetry, performance art, and “yarn bombing” trees. During the weekend, of Sept. 30-Oct 1, a group of inspired and renowned street artists will convey the emotions of the underprivileged and silenced in the city of St. Louis. SLAM to present works of Degas

The Saint Louis Art Museum will present Degas, Impressionism, and the Paris Millinery Trade, February 12– May 7, 2017, in the Main Exhibition Galleries, East Building. Admission is free. Edgar Degas's fascination with high-fashion hats and the young women who made them is the inspiration for this groundbreaking exploration of the Paris millinery trade from about 1875 to 1914. Degas, Impressionism, and the Paris Millinery Trade will feature 60 paintings and pastels, including key works by Degas that have never been exhibited in the United States, as well as an array of period hats. Organized by the Saint Louis Art Museum and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the exhibition is the first to examine a crucial and little-known area of Degas's decadeslong study of Parisian modern life. The exhibition situates Degas's output within the context of the work of his fellow Impressionists who were also fascinated by hats, including Édouard Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Mary Cassatt, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The exhibition relates these artists

Music Tuning in Rock of the '70s Tour site at www.familyarena.com. planned Santana returning to Four-famed acts will appear at The Family Arena in St. Charles on St. Louis Oct. 14. Foghat’s live performances show why the band is still around today and why they will be able to keep on rockin’ as long as they want. This band truly is timeless. Constant touring is part of their DNA and the band just loves to play. Their live show is as intense as ever with the incredible energy and musicianship that one would expect and hope for from a seasoned band with such a long musical history and they are bringing their fans along for the ride. Foghat fans are everywhere and these days their audience consists of all ages. From the young kids who play Guitar Hero III and know all of the lyrics to ‘Slow Ride’, to the Dazed & Confused generation of 30-40 somethings and the ‘boomers’ who bought Foghat’s first vinyl or 8 track! Firefall was one of the first bands to bring the creative and musical richness of the Rocky Mountain area to the forefront of the industry. They helped spearhead the birth and continuation of the country rock / folk rock sound of the 70's. The band continues to dazzle audiences with their exuberant and rocking performances - this was no 'light rock' band. FIREFALL is a group of exceptional musicians and singers, with a repertoire of recognizable songs few bands can match. Their many hits - "You Are The Woman," "Just Remember I Love You," "Strange Way," " Cinderella," "Mexico," " Livin' Ain't Livin'," " So Long," " Goodbye I Love You," " Sweet and Sour" and others - are faithfully recreated with a freshness rare in live performances of such classics. Formed from the cream of Atlanta’s studio musicians, the Atlanta Rhythm Section (actually hailing from nearby Doraville, Georgia) came together in 1970 after working on a Roy Orbison recording session. In 1977, “So In To You” became the band’s breakthrough single, reaching the U.S. Top 10, and the album from which it came, A Rock And Roll Alternative, went gold. Their platinum follow-up album, Champagne Jam, broke into the Top 10 in 1978, together with the blockbuster single “Imaginary Lover” (“I’m Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight” was another major hit from the same album). From their beginnings in midSixties Ohio as a group of friends playing cover tunes to the presentday unit featuring founding member/pedal-steel innovator John David Call, veteran bassist Mike Reilly, propulsive drummer Scott Thompson and guitar ace Donnie Clark, Pure Prairie League continues to embellish the rich 43-year history of one of Country-Rock’s pioneering forces. Tickets can be purchased at the Family Arena Ticket Office or online at www.metrotix.com. Prices: $80 (Gold Circle), $65 (Floor), $55 (100 Level Sidelines), $45 (100 Level Endzone), $35 (Upper Level) To charge by phone call MetroTix at 314-534-1111. For help purchasing accessible seating, please call The Family Arena ADA Hotline at 636896-4234 or visit http://www. metrotix.com/events/detail/rock70s Please call The Family Arena event hotline at 636-896-4242 for more information, or visit our web

Santana will bring his Tr a n s m o g r i f y To u r 2 0 1 7 t o the Fabulous Fox Theatre on Wednesday, July 12 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $150, $125, $99, $89, $79, $69 and may be purchased online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. For forty years and as many albums later, Santana has sold more than 100 million records and reached more than 100 million fans at concerts worldwide. To date, Santana has won ten GRAMMY® Awards and three Latin GRAMMY® Awards. He won a record-tying nine GRAMMYs for a single project for 1999’s Supernatural (including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for “Smooth”) as well as three Latin GRAMMY’s. He has also received the Billboard Century Award (1996), was ushered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1998), received the Billboard Latin Music Awards’ Lifetime Achievement honor (2009), and was the recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors Aw a rd ( 2 0 1 3 ) . A m o n g m a n y other honors, Carlos Santana has been cited by Rolling Stone as #15 on their list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.” And, with the 2014 release of Corazón, Santana surpassed the Rolling Stones and is one of only two music acts in Billboard history to score at least one Top Ten album for six consecutive decades from the 1960s on. April 15, 2016 marks the release date of Santana IV, the wildly anticipated studio album that reunites the revered early ‘70s lineup of guitar icon Carlos

Santana (guitar, vocals), Gregg Rolie (keyboards, lead vocals), Neal Schon (guitar, vocals), Michael Carabello (percussion) and Michael Shrieve (drums). Santana IV features 16 allnew tracks written and produced by the band that burst with the same unparalleled energy and superlative musicianship that made Santana a pioneering force in world music and a household name across the globe. Santana IV debuted at #5 on Billboard’s Top 200 Chart and marks Santana’s fourteenth Top 10 album. Santana is currently headlining a multi-year residency at House of Blues at Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas. In the fall of 2014, Carlos Santana released his memoir “The Universal Tone: Bringing My Story to Light.” It’s a profoundly inspiring tale of spiritual commitment and musical fearlessness that does not balk at finding the humor in the world of high-flying fame, nor at speaking plainly of Santana’s personal revelations, and the divine and infinite possibility he sees in each person he meets.

2CELLOS coming to The Fox

2CELLOS, music’s most electric and dynamic instrumental duo, go to the movies for their new Portrait/ Sony Music Masterworks album Score, available March 17, 2017. Bringing 2CELLOS’ game-changing sound and style to the most popular melodies ever written for classic and contemporary movies and television, Score will be supported by a world tour, kicking off with its U.S. leg this summer coming to the Fabulous Fox Theatre on Monday, October 23 at 7:30 p.m.. Tickets are $93, $63, $53, $43 and $33. Tickets are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-534-

1111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. An international sensation since their unique video version of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” rocked YouTube with millions of hits in 2011, the Croatian cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser have created three highenergy albums for Sony Music Masterworks. Score finds them exploring a more traditional soundworld. Joining them here – to provide the ideal aural backdrop to their virtuosity – is the London Symphony Orchestra, with conductor/arranger Robin Smith at the helm. Sulic and Hauser also co-produced Score with Nick Patrick (Jackie Evancho, Il Divo, Placido Domingo). “We love movie music! This album represents some of our favorite pieces of music by our favorite film composers. Having the opportunity to arrange them for cello whilst working with the world class London Symphony Orchestra has been a dream come true,” says Stjepan. The album opens with an arrangement of Ramin Djawadi’s melodies that score Game of Thrones, culminating in the bold Main Title theme, in which the stirring sound of cellos announces each of what may be the most eagerly awaited episodes in contemporary television. Themes that drove some of the biggest epics in movie history are also featured in fresh new treatments – favorite Oscar-winning t h e m e s f ro m J a m e s H o r n e r ’ s score for Titanic (“My Heart Will Go On”), John Williams’ score for Schindler ’s List and Vangelis’s score for Chariots of Fire, as well as “For the Love of a Princess” from Braveheart (also by Horner); “May It Be” from The Lord of the Rings: The

Fellowship of the Ring (introduced in the film by Enya); and the inspiring “Now We Are Free” from Gladiator, by the film’s composer Hans Zimmer, Lisa Gerrard and Klaus Badelt. The vocal beauty of the cello’s sound is a perfect match for a brace of romantic themes. They include the Henry Mancini/Johnny Mercer song “Moon River” from Breakfast at Tiffany’s; Ennio Morricone’s beautiful themes for Cinema Paradiso and Malena; Nino Rota’s love theme for The Godfather; Francis Lai’s Oscar-winning theme from Love Story; Hans Zimmer ’s theme from Rain Man; and Stanley Myers’ haunting “Cavatina” heard in The Deer Hunter. 2CELLOS have forged a signature style that breaks down the boundaries between genres of music, from classical and film music to pop and rock. As impressive when playing Bach and Vivaldi as they are when rocking out, Sulic and Hauser know no limits when it comes to performing live. They have sold out shows around the globe and also performed with Sir Elton John as part of his band, as well as opening his shows to rapturous acclaim. 2CELLOS were the first instrumentalists to be featured on Glee. They have also appeared multiple times on The Today Show and The Ellen DeGeneres Show in addition to The Tonight Show, The Bachelor Live Wedding Special among others. Their selftitled debut album, IN2ITION and Celloverse are available on Sony Music Masterworks. Sony Music Masterworks comprises Masterworks, Sony Classical, OKeh, Portrait and Masterworks Broadway imprints. For email updates and information please visit www.SonyMasterworks.

Dining Delights

Bill Roseberry/The Edge

Above, a macaroni and cheese pizza with bacon added from Firehouse Pizza in Peoria. Below, a pig in a blanket with an Italian sausage wrapped in dough.

Firehouse Pizza in Peoria By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge I recently took a trip to Peoria to check out the large-school boys’ basketball state tournament and well, you gotta eat while you’re there so I checked out the local food scene, too. In my research I came across a unique pizza joint located at 8879 N. Knoxville Ave. — Firehouse Pizza. Firehouse began in Peoria in 2003 and now has four locations. There is a brand new one in East Peoria with a tweaked menu, along with one in Normal and another in Morton. We checked out their original Peoria location. I know pizza can be pretty subjective and create some heated discussions over who has their favorite spots. It becomes really hard to find unique places to hit up after a while because there are so many pizza joints, but what caught my eye were their specialty pizzas. With stuff like mango habanero, chili cheese dog and macaroni and cheese choices, I thought it was definitely worth a review. It definitely had me intrigued. But before I get into my pizza selection I had to try out an appetizer first. I went with the pig in a blanket. They offered a full-sized hot dog wrapped in their homemade dough and also an Italian sausage wrapped in the same dough. I ordered the Italian sausage version. When it arrived it was pretty big. The dough was encasing the entire sausage and baked to a perfect golden brown. I slapped some honey mustard on the top of it and dug in. The sausage had a nice kick to it and the dough was nice and fluffy with a nice crust on the ends, very good. It was all to get me ready for the main event though. I was fired up to try one of the specialty pizzas and I went with the mac and cheese. Of course I gussied it up a little bit by adding bacon to it. The mac and cheese pizza started with the sauce by mixing Firehouse’s nacho sauce with their alfredo sauce. It was then topped with penne pasta and a mozzarella and cheddar cheese blend. It was absolutely delicious. I was worried that the noodles would be dried out, but that

wasn’t the case at all. They were extremely tender and the cheese was so thick, sweet and creamy in every bite. You couldn’t tell that it was a nacho and alfredo sauce concoction. The bacon obviously added to the experience. When doesn’t bacon make things better? It was definitely a unique experience and I applaud Firehouse for creating their own style of pizza. I ate the entire thing by myself. It was on a hand tossed crust. As for the rest of my group, they weren’t brave enough to try a specialty pizza, so they went with normal choices like pepperoni and sausage and weren’t overly impressed. There were seven of us in our group and most agreed that their pizzas reminded them of Pantera’s. That’s nothing to scoff at, Pantera’s has always offered a great pie. They just didn’t have the same unique experience that I enjoyed and afterward some of them wished they had gone with one of the specialty choices. I wish we could have made the lunch

buffet, which is offered every day of the week. Monday through Friday it’s from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday it goes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Our server informed us that on the buffet they will offer their specialty pizzas by the slice so you can check them out without ordering an entire pie. That would have been good for the chili cheese dog and mango habanero. I just couldn’t bring myself to order an entire pizza of those crazy concoctions. The chili cheese dog pizza is pretty self explanatory. It is comprised of chili as the sauce, with cut up hot dogs on top and a mix of mozzarella and cheddar cheese. The mango habanero came with a mango habanero sauce, chicken, mushrooms and banana peppers. There was also the backdraft that caught me eye, consisting of chicken and bacon with a four-cheese blend, jalapenos and a spicy wing sauce and the spicy buffalo chicken with chicken and bacon over a spicy hot wing sauce.

May 18, 2017

You can also create your own pizza if that’s your thing. They offer sauces like the mango habanero, alfredo, tangy, ranch and barbecue to name a few. The toppings include some quirky options like hot dogs, seasoned taco meat, broccoli, cauliflower, pickles and peppadews. Peppadews are sweet piquanté peppers. If you’re not in the mood for pizza, there are also salads, pasta bowls, calzones, bone-in and boneless hot wings and oven baked subs available. As for the layout of the restaurant, it was pretty big. There were a couple tables up front and a ton of booths for patrons. They also had a back room with banquet tables where we set up shop with a large TV where we could watch some March Madness games. There are also small TVs at all the booths in the front of the restaurant. So next time you’re in Peoria check out Firehouse Pizza for a unique pizza experience when you gotta eat.
